  1. of Figra and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.

  2. When they came to the border of Maida, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the spirit of Jesus

  3. would not allow them to. So they passed by Maida and went down to Troas. During the night,

  4. Paul had a vision of a man in Macedonia standing and begging him, come over to Macedonia and help us.

  5. After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

  6. From Troas, we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrath and next on to Neapolis.

  7. From there, we travelled to Philippi, a Roman colony and leading city of that district of Macedonia,

  8. and we stayed there for several days. On the Sabbath, we went out to the city gate to the river,

  9. where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.

  10. One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Pyrotera,

  11. who was a worshipper of God.

  12. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message.

  13. When she and the members of her household were baptised, she invited us to our home.

  14. If you consider me a believer in the Lord, she said, come and stay at my house.

  15. And she persuaded us.

  16. Once we were going to the place of prayer,

  17. we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future.

  18. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.

  19. The girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting,

  20. These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.

  21. She kept this up for many days.

  22. Finally, Paul became so troubled that he turned round and said to the spirit,

  23. In the name of Jesus Christ, I command you to come out of her.

  24. At that moment, the spirit left her.

  25. When the owners of the slave girl realised that their hope of making money was gone,

  26. they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities.

  27. They brought them before the magistrates and said,

  28. These men are Jews and are throwing our city in an uproar

  29. by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practise.

  30. The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas,

  31. and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten.

  32. After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison,

  33. and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.

  34. Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

  35. About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God,

  36. and the other prisoners were listening to them.

  37. Suddenly, there was a violent earthquake, and the foundations of the prison were shaken.

  38. At once, all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains became loose.

  39. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open,

  40. he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.

  41. But Paul shouted,

  42. Don't harm yourself! We are all here!

  43. The jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.

  44. He then brought them out and asked,

  45. Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

  46. They replied,

  47. Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.

  48. Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him, and all the others in his house.

  49. At that hour of the night, the jailer took them and washed their wounds.

  50. Then immediately he and all his family were baptized.

  51. The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them.

  52. He was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God, he and his whole family.

  53. When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order,

  54. Release those men!

  55. The jailer told Paul,

  56. The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released.

  57. Now you can leave. Go in peace.

  58. But Paul said to the officers,

  59. They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison.

  60. And now, do they want us to get rid of us quietly?

  61. No, let them come themselves and escort us out.

  62. The officers reported this to the magistrates,

  63. And when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.

  64. They came to appease them and escorted them out from the prison,

  65. Requesting them to leave the city.

  66. After Paul and Silas came out of the prison,

  67. They went to Lydia's house, where they met with the brothers and encouraged them.

  68. Then they left.

  69. Well, thanks Alex and Louise for reading.

  70. Please have your Bibles open there.

  71. Follow along.

  72. Take notes.

  73. And if you have questions afterwards, or anything you'd like to discuss or think through about this passage,

  74. Or indeed anything else,

  75. Please do that with me afterwards.

  76. Well, we're going to ask for God's help,

  77. As we try and see how these incredible stories,

  78. True stories,

  79. Shape our lives today.

  80. Let's pray.

  81. Let's pray.

  82. Father,

  83. We ask that you would open our minds to understand your word.

  84. Open up our hearts,

  85. That we might receive from you all that you have to say.

  86. And we pray for the help of your Holy Spirit,

  87. That he would breathe life into these words.

  88. So that they change us individually,

  89. And change us together as a church family.

  90. So we ask for your help in this.

  91. In Jesus' name.

  92. Amen.

  93. Well, how great is God?

  94. 70% of the world's population,

  95. That's 4.9 billion people,

  96. Live in areas of the world,

  97. Where their governments and their leaders,

  98. Restrict and oppose,

  99. The moving out of the gospel.

  100. So for example,

  101. If you lived in North Korea today,

  102. And you were caught by the authorities,

  103. With a Bible in your possession,

  104. Or even within your home,

  105. You and three generations of your family,

  106. So that's you and possibly your children,

  107. And your parents,

  108. Would all be sent to a concentration camp.

  109. It's estimated that there are 70,000 Christians,

  110. In that country alone,

  111. Living in such conditions.

  112. Or if you lived in Pakistan,

  113. Or in parts of India,

  114. And you were to share,

  115. Jesus with your neighbour,

  116. You could be run out,

  117. Or burnt out of your home,

  118. And you would almost certainly lose your job.

  119. But let's bring it a little bit closer to home.

  120. Ireland,

  121. Ireland,

  122. Which doesn't restrict religious freedom,

  123. We have liberty to talk about Jesus.

  124. Well, Ireland still remains one of the most unreached countries in Europe.

  125. So here is my question for us all this morning.

  126. How great is God to break down these barriers and obstacles,

  127. So that the good news of Christ reaches the 70% enclosed countries,

  128. And the country of Ireland.

  129. But let me make it more personal than that.

  130. Who do you know,

  131. And picture them now in your minds,

  132. Who do you know within the circle of your friends and family,

  133. That has not yet turned to Christ?

  134. How great is God to open their hearts,

  135. So that they come to faith in Christ?

  136. Or maybe you're not yet a believer yourself,

  137. And you're always wondering and questions,

  138. Well, how great is God to open your hearts,

  139. To come to faith?

  140. You see, it's very easy for us to become cynical and discouraged.

  141. We don't hear too much of people coming to faith in Christ,

  142. Certainly not in big numbers.

  143. And so we begin to question and we doubt God's ability to save.

  144. Well, Acts 16 is a tonic of encouragement,

  145. Because it reminds us that God is great,

  146. And that God continues to open doors in amazing and incredible ways,

  147. So that his mission and the name of Christ goes on.

  148. So we're going to look at a few things here that shows us that.

  149. First of all, God directs his mission.

  150. Verse 6,

  151. Chapter 16.

  152. Paul and his companions,

  153. At this stage it's a team,

  154. Which includes Silas,

  155. A young guy called Timothy,

  156. Who they've picked up,

  157. And Luke,

  158. Who is the author of Acts.

  159. So these four together in a team.

  160. They've travelled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia.

  161. Well, why did they decide to go to those places?

  162. Well, we're told, read on.

  163. They've been kept by the Holy Spirit

  164. From preaching the word in the province of Asia.

  165. Now a map will help us here.

  166. There we are, on the screen.

  167. Paul has been travelling from Antioch.

  168. That's been his local church.

  169. He's been sent out from there.

  170. And in Phrygia and Galatia,

  171. He's seen lots of new churches planted.

  172. People have come to faith.

  173. They've joined together and churches have started.

  174. And as he's moved on from there,

  175. He's thinking, right, where to next?

  176. And they try to go to Asia.

  177. But they've been stopped from bringing the good news.

  178. The Spirit won't allow them.

  179. Now it would make sense if we read something like this,

  180. That the local authorities wouldn't allow them to go through.

  181. Or if the river had flooded and the road wasn't accessible.

  182. We could kind of understand that.

  183. But when it says so clearly that the Holy Spirit

  184. Wouldn't allow them to go into Asia,

  185. We're kind of boggled by that.

  186. Verse 7.

  187. So when they came to the border of Mycenae,

  188. They tried to enter Bithynia,

  189. Which was kind of up in the northeast.

  190. But the Spirit of Jesus

  191. Would not allow them to.

  192. So they passed by Mycenae,

  193. And they went on down to Troas.

  194. It really is quite strange, isn't it?

  195. Because at the beginning of Acts,

  196. We read about Jesus who promised the Holy Spirit to come,

  197. Who would enable them to bring the good news of people

  198. To new people,

  199. And to new places,

  200. And he was going to open up doors to do that.

  201. But now it seems he's blocking

  202. And frustrating their every move.

  203. So why is this happening?

  204. Well we're told,

  205. Verse 9.

  206. During the night,

  207. Paul had a vision

  208. Of a man of Macedonia,

  209. Which is,

  210. As we know as Greece today,

  211. Standing and begging him,

  212. Come over to Macedonia

  213. And help us.

  214. After Paul had seen the vision,

  215. We got ready at once

  216. To leave for Macedonia,

  217. Concluding,

  218. Obviously they'd prayed about it

  219. And talked about it,

  220. But they concluded

  221. That God had called us

  222. To preach the gospel

  223. To them.

  224. Now for us to try and figure out

  225. What did the Spirit say?

  226. Or how did the Spirit lead them?

  227. Or what was the vision like?

  228. Is to miss the point.

  229. That's not what the text is about.

  230. It's simply to reassure us

  231. That God,

  232. By his Spirit,

  233. Directs his mission

  234. In all kinds of ways

  235. All of the time.

  236. It's God who closes one door,

  237. But then he opens up another door.

  238. And in this case,

  239. It was a door into mainland Europe.

  240. The promise that the good news

  241. Would go into the ends of the earth

  242. From Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria

  243. To the ends of the earth

  244. Is beginning to be worked out.

  245. God has a plan,

  246. He's sticking to it,

  247. And it's happening.

  248. Now later on,

  249. In Acts chapter 19,

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  250. We do read that Paul did get to Asia.

  251. And in verse 10 of chapter 19,

  252. We read,

  253. So that all the Jews and Greeks

  254. Who lived in the province of Asia

  255. Heard the word of the Lord.

  256. So God was not ignoring these people

  257. In these other places.

  258. It was simply

  259. That it was not God's time.

  260. And we might not always understand God's ways,

  261. But we can always trust that God is at work.

  262. God is in supreme control over my life,

  263. Over your life,

  264. Over every single event in your life,

  265. And over his mission.

  266. And he will order everything in such a way

  267. That his will is done.

  268. So we may long and we may pray

  269. For the people of North Korea

  270. And long that they are reached.

  271. We may be praying for somebody in our family

  272. Or a friend,

  273. That they would become a Christian.

  274. We've maybe sought opportunity

  275. After opportunity

  276. To witness to a colleague,

  277. But it just seems the door is closed

  278. And we're not getting anywhere.

  279. Well, all of those desires are not wrong.

  280. They're wonderfully healthy and good

  281. And they're God-promoted.

  282. But sometimes

  283. Sometimes

  284. It's just not God's timing.

  285. Sometimes

  286. It's just not God's priority.

  287. The fact that things don't always work out

  288. The way we want or imagine.

  289. The reality that our efforts

  290. Sometimes just seem to come to nothing.

  291. We try something,

  292. We do something,

  293. And, well, it doesn't work.

  294. It's not because we're doing something wrong.

  295. It's not because our desires

  296. Are not strong enough.

  297. No, it's simply

  298. That God is directing

  299. His mission

  300. According to His timing

  301. And His plans.

  302. But second,

  303. He not only directs his mission,

  304. He also opens people's hearts.

  305. So Paul has gone down to Troas

  306. And they make their way across

  307. Eventually to a city called Philippi.

  308. They're not given any further direction

  309. About where to go

  310. Or who they might meet.

  311. They just simply go.

  312. Look at verse 13.

  313. On the Sabbath, he says,

  314. We went outside the city gate

  315. To the river

  316. Where we expected to find a place of prayer.

  317. There's no church in this city.

  318. There's no gathering of believers.

  319. Because the gospel hasn't yet reached there.

  320. But God does have His plan

  321. As we will see.

  322. The rest of verse 13.

  323. We sat down

  324. And we began to speak

  325. To the women

  326. Who had gathered there.

  327. One of those listening

  328. Was a woman named Lydia.

  329. A dealer in purple cloth

  330. From the city of Thyatira.

  331. Now here's a very wealthy

  332. Business woman.

  333. She sells very expensive

  334. Designer labels.

  335. That's what it is

  336. To have purple cloth then

  337. Is the equivalent of Armani

  338. Or Gucci

  339. Or whatever else they have today.

  340. Designer labels

  341. A busy, wealthy woman.

  342. And what happens to this woman?

  343. Well, she's a worshipper of God.

  344. She's not a believer

  345. But she's interested in God.

  346. And the Lord opened her heart

  347. To respond to Paul's message.

  348. Now this has God's fingerprints

  349. All over it.

  350. A wealthy saleswoman

  351. Happens to come down to Philippi.

  352. And happens to meet Paul

  353. Who happens to go outside the city

  354. Down to this particular river.

  355. You see

  356. Not only is the meeting

  357. Orchestrated by God

  358. But the salvation of this woman

  359. Is orchestrated by God too.

  360. Look at what it says

  361. At the end of verse 14

  362. The Lord opened her heart

  363. To respond to Paul's message.

  364. I read a remarkable story this week

  365. About a woman living in Tunisia.

  366. Tunisia is a country

  367. That is closed to the gospel.

  368. And she had an extraordinary encounter.

  369. She was in her house

  370. And she heard a knock on her door.

  371. And as she went to open it

  372. She asked, who is it?

  373. The response was clear.

  374. Open up the door

  375. I want to come in and eat.

  376. She opened the door

  377. There was nobody there.

  378. This happened a couple of times.

  379. Open up the door

  380. I want to come in and eat.

  381. Nobody there.

  382. Later

  383. She was completely amazed

  384. When she met a Tunisian Christian

  385. She had never ever met before.

  386. And she read these words

  387. From the Bible

  388. Quoting Jesus from Revelation.

  389. Here I am

  390. I stand at the door and knock

  391. If anyone hears my voice

  392. And opens the door

  393. I will come in and eat with them

  394. And they with me.

  395. And this woman who had never met before

  396. Explained to her

  397. Who Jesus was

  398. What that invitation is all about

  399. And she became a follower of Jesus.

  400. Extraordinary!

  401. Now these things do happen

  402. I am not saying they happen every single day

  403. And God generally works

  404. Through very ordinary means.

  405. Let me tell you another story.

  406. A Christian friend of mine

  407. Told me

  408. They were waiting to board a flight

  409. And they started talking to this lady.

  410. Friendly conversation

  411. Chit chat as it happens.

  412. They boarded the plane

  413. And the lady specifically asked

  414. Could they sit next to my friend?

  415. The lady was open

  416. Full of questions

  417. And during the flight

  418. They talked about Christ

  419. And the gospel.

  420. You see God not only ordains

  421. The people that we meet

  422. He is the one who opens people's hearts

  423. To believe our message.

  424. Look at verse 14

  425. The Lord opened her heart

  426. To respond to Paul's message.

  427. We like Paul

  428. May tell the gospel

  429. But it is God

  430. Who opens the way for salvation.

  431. God in his plan

  432. Will use our words

  433. He'll use our conversations

  434. He'll use our various personalities

  435. And character

  436. He'll hear our prayers

  437. But it is God alone

  438. Who causes a person to believe.

  439. God is the one who opens closed hearts.

  440. He's the one who opens up blind eyes.

  441. He's the one who opens deaf ears

  442. To respond to the good news of Jesus.

  443. In fact the opening into Lydia's heart

  444. Led to an opening to her whole family.

  445. Look at verse 15

  446. When she and the members of her

  447. When she and the members of her household

  448. Were baptized

  449. She invited us to her home.

  450. If you consider me a believer in the Lord

  451. She said come and stay at my house.

  452. Her whole family

  453. Had become followers.

  454. And that was the start

  455. Of the opening of a church.

  456. Look at the very end of chapter 16 verse 40.

  457. It was as if Lydia's house

  458. Became the meeting place

  459. For this new church.

  460. After Paul and Silas

  461. Had come out of prison

  462. They went to Lydia's house

  463. Where they met with the brothers

  464. And encouraged them.

  465. And they left.

  466. The spirit closed one door

  467. He opened up another door

  468. He opens up a heart

  469. He opens up the way

  470. For the gospel to come into a family

  471. And he opens up the way

  472. For a church to start.

  473. But third

  474. God rules

  475. Over Satan's efforts

  476. Look at verse 16

  477. Once when we were going

  478. To the place of prayer

  479. Looking

  480. I guess

  481. For other interested people

  482. To speak to

  483. They say

  484. We were met

  485. By a slave girl

  486. Who had a spirit

  487. That's an evil spirit

  488. By which she predicted

  489. The future

  490. Now the contrast

  491. Could not be greater

  492. Lydia

  493. Who we just read about

  494. Was the owner

  495. Of a high street

  496. Designer store

  497. Independent

  498. Very wealthy

  499. This young girl

  500. Is at the bottom

  501. Of the pile

  502. She's a slave

  503. We might say today

  504. She's a victim

  505. Of human trafficking

  506. She's got no money

  507. Herself

  508. But

  509. We read in the rest

  510. Of verse 16

  511. She earned a great deal

  512. Of money

  513. For her owners

  514. By fortune telling

  515. But not only

  516. Is this girl

  517. Enslaved

  518. By her owners

  519. She is enslaved

  520. By this spirit

  521. Verse 17

  522. This girl

  523. Followed Paul

  524. And the rest of us

  525. Shouting

  526. These men are servants

  527. Of the most high God

  528. Who are telling you

  529. And it's literally

  530. Our way

  531. To be saved

  532. She was disrupting

  533. Their message

  534. And let's be clear

  535. On this

  536. Behind this girl

  537. Stands

  538. I believe

  539. The work of Satan

  540. He will use

  541. Who he can

  542. And what he can

  543. To disrupt

  544. And frustrate

  545. God's work

  546. Not only

  547. Is he out

  548. To ruin

  549. People's lives

  550. He is out

  551. To stop

  552. The liberating

  553. Mission

  554. Of King Jesus

  555. And how does

  556. Paul respond

  557. Well verse 18

  558. She kept this up

  559. For many days

  560. Disrupting

  561. Frustrating

  562. Annoying

  563. Finally

  564. Paul became

  565. So troubled

  566. That he turned round

  567. And he said

  568. To the spirit

  569. In the name of

  570. Jesus Christ

  571. I command you

  572. To come out

  573. Of her

  574. At that moment

  575. The spirit

  576. Left

  577. Satan's

  578. Attempts

  579. To hinder

  580. God's mission

  581. Are quickly

  582. Diverted

  583. And stopped

  584. God's

  585. But not only

  586. That

  587. The girl

  588. He used

  589. And enslaved

  590. Has now been

  591. Set free

  592. From her

  593. Owners

  594. She's set

  595. Free to

  596. Return home

  597. And she's been

  598. Set free

  599. To live

  600. The life

  601. That God

  602. Has intended

  603. Her to live

  604. God's power

  605. Is supreme

  606. It was in the

  607. Name of

  608. Jesus Christ

  609. That the spirit

  610. Goes from her

  611. Christ who

  612. Had defeated

  613. And disarmed

  614. Satan at the

  615. Cross

  616. Rules over

  617. His every

  618. Sinister move

  619. And of course

  620. Satan continues

  621. In his activity

  622. Today

  623. And let's be

  624. Very clear

  625. Those attempts

  626. Can be very

  627. Real

  628. And sometimes

  629. We are very

  630. Aware of them

  631. And we must

  632. Never underestimate

  633. His activity

  634. But let's also

  635. Be clear on

  636. This

  637. God is not

  638. Second guessing

  639. His every

  640. Move

  641. He has

  642. Supreme authority

  643. Over all

  644. He does

  645. And he

  646. Rules over

  647. His every

  648. Effort

  649. God opens

  650. The door

  651. To those

  652. Who are

  653. Enslaved

  654. And he

  655. Sets them

  656. Free

  657. He breaks

  658. Those chains

  659. And those

  660. Padlocks

  661. He unbolts

  662. The door

  663. And he

  664. Sets

  665. People

  666. Free

  667. Nothing

  668. Can stand

  669. In God's

  670. Way

  671. Or does

  672. It

  673. Because of

  674. What's

  675. Happened

  676. Paul and

  677. Silas

  678. Find themselves

  679. In terrible

  680. Trouble with

  681. The authorities

  682. Verse 23

  683. After they

  684. Had been

  685. Severely

  686. Flogged

  687. That's

  688. Whipped

  689. They were

  690. Thrown

  691. Into prison

  692. And the

  693. Jailer was

  694. Commanded to

  695. Guard them

  696. Carefully

  697. Upon receiving

  698. Such orders

  699. He put them

  700. In the

  701. Inner cell

  702. And fastened

  703. Their feet

  704. In the

  705. Stocks

  706. It

  707. Seems

  708. Things

  709. Are

  710. Going

  711. From

  712. Bad

  713. To

  714. Worse

  715. But in

  716. This

  717. Final

  718. Account

  719. Of

  720. The

  721. Story

  722. We

  723. See

  724. For

  725. That

  726. God

  727. Works

  728. All

  729. Things

  730. For

  731. His

  732. Mission

  733. We

  734. Sang

  735. Earlier

  736. About

  737. God

  738. Working

  739. All

  740. Things

  741. Together

  742. For

  743. Good

  744. And

  745. Here's

  746. A

  747. Classic

  748. Example

  749. Look

  750. At

  751. Verse

  752. 25

  753. About

  754. Midnight

  755. Paul

  756. And

  757. Silas

  758. Were

  759. Praying

  760. And

  761. Singing

  762. Hymns

  763. To

  764. God

  765. You

  766. See

  767. You

  768. Don't

  769. Have

  770. To

  771. Be

  772. Kind

  773. Of

  774. Excited

  775. And

  776. Everything

  777. To

  778. Be

  779. Going

  780. Well

  781. To

  782. Be

  783. Singing

  784. Hymns

  785. To

  786. God

  787. They

  788. Were

  789. Singing

  790. That

  791. The

  792. Other

  793. Prisoners

  794. Were

  795. Listening

  796. To

  797. Them

  798. Even

  799. Though

  800. They

  801. Were

  802. In

  803. The

  804. Prison

  805. Stuck

  806. Literally

  807. Between

  808. A

  809. Rock

  810. And

  811. A

  812. Hard

  813. Place

  814. Through

  815. Their

  816. Songs

  817. They're

  818. Exercising

  819. Their

  820. Trust

  821. And

  822. Their

  823. Dependence

  824. In

  825. God

  826. That

  827. No

  828. Matter

  829. What

  830. Situation

  831. They

  832. Are

  833. In

  834. They

  835. Can

  836. Trust

  837. That

  838. God

  839. Is

  840. In

  841. Control

  842. Of

  843. His

  844. Mission

  845. He's

  846. In

  847. Charge

  848. Verse

  849. 26

  850. Suddenly

  851. There

  852. Was

  853. Such

  854. A

  855. Violent

  856. Earthquake

  857. That

  858. The

  859. Foundations

  860. Of

  861. The

  862. Prison

  863. Were

  864. Shaken

  865. Now

  866. When

  867. We

  868. Hear

  869. News

  870. Of

  871. An

  872. Earthquake

  873. Things

  874. Go

  875. Wrong

  876. Bad

  877. Things

  878. Happen

  879. People

  880. Die

  881. You

  882. Don't

  883. Survive

  884. An

  885. Earthquake

  886. Especially

  887. If

  888. You're

  889. In

  890. The

  891. Inner

  892. Cell

  893. As

  894. They

  895. Were

  896. With

  897. Your

  898. Feet

  899. Chained

  900. And

  901. No

  902. Way

  903. Of

  904. Getting

  905. Out

  906. And

  907. Not

  908. Much

  909. Energy

  910. Because

  911. You've

  912. Been

  913. Beaten

  914. And

  915. Flogged

  916. The

  917. Night

  918. Before

  919. But

  920. Look

  921. Look

  922. At

  923. At

  924. Once

  925. All

  926. The

  927. Prison

  928. Doors

  929. Flew

  930. Open

  931. And

  932. Everybody's

  933. Chains

  934. Came

  935. Loose

  936. The

  937. Jailer

  938. Woke

  939. Up

  940. And

  941. When

  942. He

  943. Saw

  944. The

  945. Prison

  946. Doors

  947. Open

  948. He

  949. Drew

  950. His

  951. Sword

  952. And

  953. He

  954. Was

  955. About

  956. To

  957. Kill

  958. Himself

  959. Because

  960. He

  961. Thought

  962. The

  963. Prisoners

  964. Had

  965. Escaped

  966. And

  967. If

  968. His

  969. Boss

  970. Knew

  971. They

  972. Had

  973. Escaped

  974. Well

  975. He

  976. Would

  977. Be

  978. Killed

  979. Anyway

  980. So

  981. I

  982. Might

  983. Well

  984. Kill

  985. Myself

  986. Now

  987. But

  988. Paul

  989. Shouted

  990. Don't

  991. Harm

  992. Yourself

  993. We

  994. Are

  995. All

  996. Here

  997. Now

  998. I

  999. Think

  1000. This

  1001. Is

  1002. A

  1003. Supernatural

  1004. Event

  1005. We

  1006. Sang

  1007. Earlier

  1008. About

  1009. God

  1010. Sending

  1011. Every

  1012. Lightning

  1013. Bolt

  1014. Where

  1015. It

  1016. Should

  1017. Go

  1018. Don't

  1019. You

  1020. Think

  1021. He's

  1022. In

  1023. Control

  1024. Of

  1025. Every

  1026. Earthquake

  1027. As

  1028. Well

  1029. And

  1030. When

  1031. The

  1032. Earthquake

  1033. Happens

  1034. Doors

  1035. Open

  1036. Chains

  1037. Fall

  1038. Off

  1039. Their

  1040. Feet

  1041. And

  1042. Not

  1043. A

  1044. Brick

  1045. Falls

  1046. On

  1047. Anybody's

  1048. Head

  1049. Quite

  1050. Remarkable

  1051. Every

  1052. Single

  1053. Life

  1054. Is

  1055. Saved

  1056. Even

  1057. The

  1058. Jailer

  1059. But

  1060. There's

  1061. A

  1062. Greater

  1063. Salvation

  1064. Yet

  1065. To

  1066. Be

  1067. Experienced

  1068. Verse

  1069. 29

  1070. The

  1071. Jailer

  1072. Called

  1073. For

  1074. Lights

  1075. Rushed

  1076. In

  1077. And

  1078. He

  1079. Fell

  1080. Trembling

  1081. Before

  1082. Paul

  1083. And

  1084. Silas

  1085. He

  1086. Then

  1087. Brought

  1088. Them

  1089. Out

  1090. And

  1091. He

  1092. As

  1093. Sir

  1094. What

  1095. Must

  1096. I

  1097. Do

  1098. To

  1099. Be

  1100. Saved

  1101. I'm

  1102. Not

  1103. Quite

  1104. Sure

  1105. If

  1106. He

  1107. Knew

  1108. What

  1109. He

  1110. Was

  1111. Asking

  1112. At

  1113. That

  1114. Point

  1115. What

  1116. Must

  1117. I

  1118. Do

  1119. To

  1120. Be

  1121. Saved

  1122. From

  1123. Kind

  1124. Of

  1125. Another

  1126. Earthquake

  1127. Or

  1128. There's

  1129. Going

  1130. To

  1131. Be

  1132. Aftershocks

  1133. Or

  1134. What's

  1135. Going

  1136. To

  1137. Happen

  1138. Well

  1139. Paul

  1140. Paul

  1141. Paul

  1142. Paul

  1143. Paul

  1144. Just

  1145. Takes

  1146. It

  1147. As

  1148. It

  1149. Is

  1150. And

  1151. Takes

  1152. The

  1153. Opportunity

  1154. Verse

  1155. 31

  1156. He

  1157. Replied

  1158. Believe

  1159. In

  1160. The

  1161. Lord

  1162. Jesus

  1163. And

  1164. You

  1165. Will

  1166. Be

  1167. Saved

  1168. You

  1169. And

  1170. Your

  1171. Whole

  1172. Family

  1173. You

  1174. See

  1175. Paul

  1176. Not

  1177. Only

  1178. Saved

  1179. This

  1180. Man's

  1181. Life

  1182. From

  1183. Suicide

  1184. Not

  1185. Only

  1186. Saved

  1187. Him

  1188. Physically

  1189. But

  1190. God

  1191. Intervenes

  1192. Through

  1193. An

  1194. Earthquake

  1195. And

  1196. Through

  1197. Paul

  1198. And

  1199. He

  1200. Saved

  1201. This

  1202. Man's

  1203. Life

  1204. For

  1205. Eternity

  1206. You

  1207. See

  1208. When

  1209. Paul

  1210. And

  1211. Silas

  1212. Were

  1213. Thrown

  1214. Into

  1215. Prison

  1216. By

  1217. The

  1218. Authorities

  1219. It's

  1220. Almost

  1221. Like

  1222. The

  1223. Gospel

  1224. Has

  1225. Been

  1226. Locked

  1227. Up

  1228. With

  1229. Them

  1230. Because

  1231. They

  1232. Were

  1233. The

  1234. Messengers

  1235. They

  1236. Had

  1237. The

  1238. Gospel

  1239. With

  1240. Them

  1241. And

  1242. The

  1243. Door

  1244. Has

  1245. Been

  1246. Bolted

  1247. Shut

  1248. It

  1249. Can't

  1250. Get

  1251. Out

  1252. It's

  1253. Stuck

  1254. In

  1255. The

  1256. Inner

  1257. Cell

  1258. And

  1259. It's

  1260. Almost

  1261. Symbolic

  1262. Of

  1263. The

  1264. World's

  1265. Powers

  1266. And

  1267. The

  1268. Authorities

  1269. To

  1270. Restrict

  1271. And

  1272. To

  1273. Restrain

  1274. The

  1275. Gospel

  1276. And

  1277. To

  1278. Keep

  1279. It

  1280. In

  1281. And

  1282. Not

  1283. To

  1284. Let

  1285. It

  1286. Out

  1287. But

  1288. God

  1289. In

  1290. His

  1291. Power

  1292. Literally

  1293. Opens

  1294. Up

  1295. The

  1296. Door

  1297. Because

  1298. His

  1299. Gospel

  1300. Will

  1301. Never

  1302. Ever

  1303. Be

  1304. Chained

  1305. The

  1306. Gospel

  1307. Escapes

  1308. And

  1309. It

  1310. Begins

  1311. To

  1312. Do

  1313. Its

  1314. Work

  1315. Immediately

  1316. In

  1317. The

  1318. Life

  1319. Of

  1320. An

  1321. Unsuspecting

  1322. Jailer

  1323. Who

  1324. Just

  1325. Turned

  1326. Up

  1327. To

  1328. Do

  1329. His

  1330. Duty

  1331. As

  1332. Do

  1333. Every

  1334. Single

  1335. Day

  1336. And

  1337. Then

  1338. He

  1339. Meets

  1340. Christ

  1341. The

  1342. Imprisonment

  1343. The

  1344. Earthquake

  1345. The

  1346. Attempted

  1347. Suicide

  1348. They're

  1349. All

  1350. Under

  1351. God's

  1352. Controlling

  1353. Hand

  1354. To

  1355. Bring

  1356. This

  1357. Man

  1358. And

  1359. His

  1360. Family

  1361. To

  1362. Christ

  1363. Look

  1364. At

  1365. The

  1366. Results

  1367. It's

  1368. Really

  1369. Quite

  1370. Spectacular

  1371. Verse

  1372. 34

  1373. The

  1374. Jailer

  1375. Brought

  1376. Them

  1377. Into

  1378. His

  1379. House

  1380. And

  1381. He

  1382. Set

  1383. A

  1384. Meal

  1385. Before

  1386. Them

  1387. And

  1388. He

  1389. Was

  1390. Filled

  1391. With

  1392. Joy

  1393. Filled

  1394. With

  1395. Joy

  1396. Because

  1397. He

  1398. Had

  1399. Come

  1400. To

  1401. Believe

  1402. In

  1403. God

  1404. Not

  1405. Just

  1406. Him

  1407. But

  1408. His

  1409. Whole

  1410. Family

  1411. Had

  1412. Come

  1413. To

  1414. Christ

  1415. So

  1416. To

  1417. Go

  1418. To

  1419. Go

  1420. Back to

  1421. Our

  1422. God

  1423. Is

  1424. God

  1425. Is

  1426. Great

  1427. God

  1428. Is

  1429. Great

  1430. He

  1431. Is

  1432. Sovereign

  1433. There

  1434. Isn't

  1435. A

  1436. Hurdle

  1437. That

  1438. Can't

  1439. Be

  1440. Overcome

  1441. And

  1442. There

  1443. Isn't

  1444. One

  1445. Door

  1446. That

  1447. Can't

  1448. Be

  1449. Opened

  1450. Let

  1451. Me

  1452. Ask

  1453. That

  1454. Question

  1455. That

  1456. I

  1457. Asked

  1458. At

  1459. The

  1460. Beginning

  1461. The

  1462. Person

  1463. That

  1464. You

  1465. Might

  1466. Have

  1467. In

  1468. Your

  1469. Own

  1470. Mind

  1471. Who

  1472. Is

  1473. Not

  1474. Yet

  1475. A

  1476. Believer

  1477. A

  1478. Friend

  1479. People

  1480. Within

  1481. Your

  1482. Family

  1483. A

  1484. Colleague

  1485. Do

  1486. We

  1487. Doubt

  1488. Do

  1489. We

  1490. Become

  1491. Cynical

  1492. Or

  1493. Do

  1494. We

  1495. Read

  1496. This

  1497. And

  1498. Be

  1499. Encouraged

  1500. Afresh

  1501. That

  1502. God

  1503. Is

  1504. In

  1505. Control

  1506. Of

  1507. Our

  1508. Lives

  1509. He's

  1510. In

  1511. Control

  1512. Of

  1513. The

  1514. People

  1515. That

  1516. We

  1517. Meet

  1518. There's

  1519. No

  1520. Chance

  1521. Meetings

  1522. The

  1523. Circumstances

  1524. That

  1525. We

  1526. Find

  1527. Ourselves

  1528. In

  1529. The

  1530. Family

  1531. That

  1532. He

  1533. Has

  1534. Placed

  1535. Us

  1536. In

  1537. All

  1538. Under

  1539. God's

  1540. Control

  1541. It's

  1542. His

  1543. Mission

  1544. Things

  1545. Will

  1546. Work

  1547. Out

  1548. In

  1549. His

  1550. Timing

  1551. And

  1552. According

  1553. To

  1554. His

  1555. Plan

  1556. He

  1557. Calls

  1558. Us

  1559. To

  1560. Be

  1561. Faithful

  1562. To

  1563. Keep

  1564. Doing

  1565. What

  1566. We

  1567. Can

  1568. Do

  1569. To

  1570. Bring

  1571. As

  1572. Paul

  1573. Simply

  1574. Did

  1575. Where

  1576. He

  1577. Arrived

  1578. And

  1579. Just

  1580. Brought

  1581. The

  1582. Message

  1583. He

  1584. Had

  1585. No

  1586. Idea

  1587. What

  1588. God

  1589. Was

  1590. Going

  1591. To

  1592. Do

  1593. But

  1594. God

  1595. Did

  1596. His

  1597. Work

  1598. And

  1599. God

  1600. Will

  1601. Do

  1602. His

  1603. Work

  1604. Through

  1605. You

  1606. And

  1607. Through

  1608. Me

  1609. And

  1610. Through

  1611. This

  1612. Church

  1613. Because

  1614. It's

  1615. His

  1616. Mission

  1617. And

  1618. He

  1619. Will

  1620. See

  1621. It

  1622. Through

  1623. To

  1624. The

  1625. End

  1626. Let's

  1627. Just

  1628. Pause

  1629. For

  1630. A

  1631. Moment

  1632. Let's

  1633. Just

  1634. Take

  1635. Time

  1636. Quietly

  1637. And

  1638. Privately

  1639. To

  1640. Pray

  1641. Right

  1642. Now

  1643. For

  1644. That

  1645. Person

  1646. For

  1647. The

  1648. Friend

  1649. Or

  1650. Somebody

  1651. In

  1652. Your

  1653. Family

  1654. That

  1655. God

  1656. Wherever

  1657. They

  1658. Are

  1659. God

  1660. Would

  1661. Organize

  1662. Events

  1663. In

  1664. Such

  1665. A

  1666. Way

  1667. That

  1668. He

  1669. Would

  1670. See

  1671. Them

  1672. Open

  1673. Up

  1674. Their

  1675. Lives

  1676. And

  1677. Come

  1678. To

  1679. Faith

  1680. And

  1681. Help

  1682. Us

  1683. To

  1684. Entrust

  1685. Those

  1686. People

  1687. Into

  1688. God's

  1689. Good

  1690. Hands

  1691. To

  1692. Do

  1693. It

  1694. Let's

  1695. Just

  1696. Take

  1697. A

  1698. Moment's

  1699. Quietness

  1700. To

  1701. Pray

  1702. For

  1703. That

  1704. Now

  1705. Day

  1706. Cons

  1707. Come

  1708. воды

  1709. far

  1710. One

  1711. Shadow

  1712. Lot

  1713. Cons

  1714. Light

  1715. End

  1716. N

  1717. Look

  1718. them

  1719. So, let's go.

1720. If you are the only believer in your family, that's not a mistake.

1721. God has placed you and he has you where he has you for his purposes.

1722. If you are the only believer in your workplace or your college or your school,

1723. the friends he has given you, that is not a mistake.

1724. God has ordered things in such a way for his plan and his purpose.

1725. Father, would you please open up people's hearts.

1726. Jesus, would you please open up their eyes.

  1727. Open up their ears.

1728. That they may hear you and respond to the wonderful liberating message of Jesus Christ.

1729. For those we know who are enslaved in all kinds of different ways.

1730. Would you free them through your gospel.

  1731. Bring them to Christ.

  1732. But not just them.

1733. Would you save their whole families.

1734. We thank you that this is your mission.

1735. And help us to trust you to do your work.

  1736. As we follow you.

  1737. Amen.

  1738. We're going to sing.

  1739. We declare your majesty.

  1740. It's a short song.

1741. But we want to declare that his name is exalted.

  1742. That he reigns magnificently.

  1743. He reigns magnificently.
