  1. Acts 17. Nick is going to come and read that for us. We did Acts 16 last week. We've jumped

  2. the visit to Thessalonica and we're going to jump to Athens. Partly because during the

  3. summer you remember we went through the book of Thessalonians, so we've kind of covered

  4. that a little bit. So, yeah, Nick is going to read for us now. You can just give the page

  5. numbers and the letters. Thanks.

  6. So I'm reading from Acts chapter 17 and starting at verse 13 to the end of the chapter and that's

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  7. on page 1113 in the Red Church Bible. Burgundy colour, I suppose. Thank you.

  8. When the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea,

  9. they went there too, agitating the crowd and stirring them up. The brothers immediately

  10. sent Paul to the coast, but Silas and Timothy stayed at Berea. The men who escorted Paul brought

  11. him to Athens and then left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.

  12. While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full

  13. of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the

  14. marketplace, day by day with those who happened to be there. A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers

  15. began to dispute with him. Some of them asked, what is this babbler trying to say? Others remarked, he seems

  16. to be advocating foreign gods. This was because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the

  17. resurrection. Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him,

  18. may we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? You are bringing some strange ideas

  19. to our ears and we want to know more, to know what they mean. All the Athenians and the foreigners

  20. who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.

  21. Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said, men of Athens, I see that in every way

  22. you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship,

  23. I even found an altar with this inscription to an unknown god. Now what you worship as something

  24. unknown? I am going to proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of

  25. heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands as if

  26. he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man

  27. he made every nation of men that they should inhabit the whole earth. And he determined the time set for

  28. them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps

  29. reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from them. For in him we live and move and have our

  30. being. As some of your own poets have said, we are his offspring. Therefore, since we are God's offspring,

  31. we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image made by man's design

  32. and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

  33. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of

  34. this to all men by raising him from the dead. When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them

  35. sneered and others said, we want to hear more on this subject. At that, Paul left the council. A few men became

  36. followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysus, a member of the Areopagus, and also a woman named

  37. Damaris, and a number of others.

  38. Thank you.

  39. Thanks very much, Nick.

  40. Kirstie's just handing around some pens and sheets there if anybody would like to take notes.

  41. And again, if there's any questions that arise from this morning, please feel free to talk with me

  42. afterwards. Or at least you can raise them on our Wednesday evening studies where we follow up

  43. on the section. There's further questions about it and application and how it applies to us. So you can

  44. have a look at that. Or you can meet with us on Wednesday as we do that.

  45. Father, thank you for your word. Thank you for this book of Acts. Thank you for everything that is there for us to read and to learn. We pray that it would not just be history, just mere information, but that these words would be life-changing.

  46. We pray that we would be life-changing. We pray that we will be different people from what we hear today, that your spirit would change us. And we pray for your help in this this morning. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  47. well, I think you all have heard of Albert Einstein, responsible for E equals MC2 or MC squared, is it? See, when they introduce letters into maths, it gets a bit confusing.

  48. but Albert Einstein was one of the greatest scientists, one of the most brilliant minds that the world has ever known.

  49. He's also famous for writing what has become known as the God Letter.

  50. You might have seen it on some of the news channels.

  51. It went on sale this week on eBay and the bidding started at $3 million if you're interested in buying his letter.

  52. Well, in the letter he wrote this.

  53. The word God is for me nothing more than an expression and product of human weaknesses.

  54. The Bible, a collection of honourable but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish.

  55. No interpretation, no matter how subtle, can for me change this.

  56. A great mind expressing his views on God.

  57. Now, I think that reflects the general mind of people living in Ireland today.

  58. We've come of age, we've graduated from childish thinking.

  59. We've moved on from God.

  60. We've no reason for God.

  61. We've learned to live without God.

  62. But that's actually nothing new.

  63. Because this was the culture that Paul found himself in when he went to Athens.

  64. Athens was the intellectual capital of the Roman Empire.

  65. It was the place where all the big universities were.

  66. It was home to great philosophers like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.

  67. It was the gathering place for the great minds and thinkers to hang out.

  68. Verse 21.

  69. All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.

  70. I think that has to be one of the best descriptions of university and college life, doesn't it?

  71. Spending their time doing nothing but drinking coffee and talking.

  72. Spending their time doing nothing but thinking about the way, if you're in university, you can get me back afterwards.

  73. But for all of their thinking and for all of their talking, it seems that they just had no place for God.

  74. They were living their life without any reference to God.

  75. He was simply pushed out of the box.

  76. so while Paul was in Athens waiting for his team to come there'd been persecution in Thessalonica

  77. so he had to leave there and go down to Athens and as he's waiting for his team to join him

  78. he begins to engage with these great thinkers to talk with them debate with them discuss with them

  79. and there's three things that we're going to look at this morning just to kind of

  80. keep it all together the first is this how we replace God the reason for God and our response

  81. to God so three things how we replace God the reason we need God and then our response to this God

  82. so first of all how we replace God look at verse 16 while Paul was waiting for them in Athens he was

  83. greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols literally everywhere you looked every corner

  84. that you turned there was an idol representing a certain God they had sex gods they had war gods

  85. they had money gods they had work gods they had every kind of God and with every God there was an idol

  86. and we're told there that Paul was greatly distressed it means he was he was really angry

  87. he was bubbling up inside he wasn't temper like he didn't go around smashing them

  88. but he was deeply upset inside himself that the people of this great city had replaced God

  89. with their own gods and isn't that exactly what we have in Ireland today

  90. we don't just remove God we replace him with something else or someone else

  91. there's a book it's a collection of essays called no gods but God and one of the authors

  92. Richard keys he writes this and I think it just sums it up so clearly he says when we cease

  93. to worship God we do not worship nothing we worship anything we do not just eliminate God in other

  94. words we don't just push God out of out of the way we don't just close them outside the door

  95. he says we erect God's substitutes in his place and these God's substitutes are what we call idols

  96. and it seems the whole city had not only removed God but they had replaced God with something else

  97. we see this in verse 18 there were a group of epicurean and stoic philosophers who began to dispute with Paul

  98. now epicureans were people who believed that there were gods who kind of maybe started the world but

  99. they were kind of a way out there they were just remote and and took no interest in the world or interest in

  100. people's affairs a little bit like people today then there were the stoics they were people who believed

  101. that the world was controlled by the gods but they were impersonal and you couldn't relate to them

  102. and so they entered into this debate this discussion with Paul and some of them asked what is this babbler

  103. trying to say they thought Paul was a little bit uneducated what kind of degree does he have to be

  104. talking to us others remarked he seems to be advocating foreign gods he's got another one it's not just

  105. we've got a few here he's bringing another god along they said this because Paul was preaching the good

  106. news about Jesus and the resurrection you see these great thinkers with these brilliant minds being able

  107. to grasp great big issues had not only removed Jesus Christ from their thinking but they had replaced Christ

  108. with a whole lot of ideologies we might call it intellectual idols it was simply their human attempt to try and

  109. explain life the world the universe without any kind of reference to God whatsoever

  110. somebody like Richard Dawkins or any of his atheist followers would fit into that category

  111. and I don't think that the people of our land today are any different and we're no different

  112. and you might say well Johnny I haven't got any idol if you go and look in my garden you might kind of

  113. find a little gnome or something like that but that's about it I don't have a carved or or sculpted image

  114. in my garden or in my house but we've all got idols again the author Richard Keyes he explains it like this

  115. he says an idol can be a physical object it could be your car it could be a property your home a person

  116. your spouse or one of your children it could be an activity sport or some other hobby it could be a role

  117. an institution it could be an institution it could be the church a hope an image an idea a pleasure

  118. or a hero anything can substitute for God

  119. now none of these things that I've mentioned are wrong but when they become more important to you

  120. than God then they become an idol because you're making it as important as God

  121. so instead of looking to God for meaning and purpose

  122. well we look to our own little idols the things that are important to us

  123. we look to things like friends and family hoping that in them they'll satisfy us

  124. maybe if I could get a wife or a husband or a boyfriend or a girlfriend if I could have that

  125. then I'll be satisfied

  126. or maybe we work to we look to work and leisure and if I can get that degree if I can get that

  127. qualification if I can have that job if I can have that salary if I can have those things

  128. then my life will be fulfilled and it seems like we stuff our lives with idols with God's substitutes

  129. longing for peace longing for happiness longing for joy if only we could get that then I will be okay

  130. you see for all of our clever thinking and talking we've not just removed God

  131. we've just replaced God with something else or someone else

  132. but you know what when we replace God with with something else

  133. it's it's something counterfeit it's it's not the real thing

  134. it's always going to fail you it's never going to deliver what it promises you

  135. because it can't because it's not God it's a replacement it's instead of

  136. look at verse 22

  137. Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and he said

  138. men of Athens I see that in every way you are very religious

  139. now I'm sure some of these great philosophers and thinkers were a bit put out by

  140. that you wouldn't want to describe yourself as being religious religious is a dirty word

  141. nobody wants to be thought of religious nobody wants to be called a holy Joe anymore

  142. because we've moved on we've grown up we've we've moved away from childish thinking

  143. we've we've managed to live life without God we don't need him anymore

  144. but you know what we actually are all religious

  145. and the reason is is because we all worship something

  146. look at what Paul says in verse 23

  147. he says for as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship

  148. I even found an altar with this inscription to an unknown God

  149. now what you worship is something unknown I'm going to proclaim to you

  150. now people might be moving on in their thinking in our land

  151. and people might stop worshipping God as we would say

  152. they might stop going to church

  153. they might read their Bible

  154. they might think the value of praying anymore

  155. they kind of have left all of that behind

  156. but actually people continue to be very religious

  157. they still worship other things

  158. to worship something

  159. simply means to give your life to something

  160. in the hope

  161. that our emptiness will be fulfilled

  162. and our longings will be satisfied

  163. we're all worshippers

  164. we are all religious people

  165. it's just we worship different things

  166. but being fulfilled and being satisfied

  167. these are only things that God can provide

  168. when we worship him

  169. so first of all Paul kind of sets out his stall

  170. and he shows us how we have all replaced God

  171. with something else or someone else

  172. and now he shows us the reason for God

  173. he shows us who God is

  174. and why we actually need God

  175. we can't afford to replace him

  176. three things

  177. first God is the creator of all life

  178. verse 24

  179. the God who made the world and everything in it

  180. is the Lord of heaven and earth

  181. and does not live in temples built by hands

  182. now

  183. to say that in a university setting

  184. to talk that way to your friends

  185. to say that God created the world

  186. whoa

  187. people just can't handle that anymore

  188. God

  189. don't be so silly

  190. don't talk like that

  191. and they simply want to remove God

  192. out of the equation

  193. well let's go down that route for a minute

  194. let's remove God

  195. from the equation of how the world came to be

  196. and what are we left with?

  197. I'll tell you what we're left with

  198. chance

  199. we're a random collection of atoms

  200. that came from nowhere

  201. and somehow all came together

  202. and then exploded into this life giving force

  203. all by itself

  204. and the end product

  205. which is all these multiple forms of life

  206. all over the place

  207. in all their wonderful design

  208. and everything else

  209. are just here

  210. but they're under nobody's control

  211. it all just happens

  212. it's all an accident

  213. it's all random

  214. that means you and I are all accidents

  215. we've come from nowhere

  216. and we're going nowhere

  217. but just open our eyes

  218. and our ears

  219. look at the delicate beauty

  220. that there is

  221. from the smallest flower

  222. to the intricate design

  223. and order

  224. of our huge universe

  225. and the galaxy

  226. it all points to a creator

  227. to somebody who's in control

  228. even scientists are beginning

  229. to step over

  230. and they're beginning to say

  231. yes there is

  232. an intelligent designer

  233. they mightn't say it's God

  234. but there is intelligent design

  235. and look what it says

  236. at the end of verse 24

  237. and God does not live

  238. in temples built by hands

  239. God the creator

  240. can't be man managed

  241. or downsized

  242. so that we can put him

  243. into a little box

  244. or fit him into

  245. into some little cupboard

  246. and shut the door

  247. when we don't need him

  248. when it comes to thinking

  249. about how the world came to be

  250. let's shove God away

  251. to one side

  252. we can't do that

  253. he is our creator

  254. and he controls

  255. the world

  256. in which we live

  257. we can't remove God

  258. we need God

  259. otherwise life is just chance

  260. it's random

  261. it's an accident

  262. the second thing he says

  263. is that God is

  264. the centre

  265. of all life

  266. or we might say

  267. the source

  268. of all life

  269. verse 25

  270. and he is not served

  271. by human hands

  272. as if he needed anything

  273. because he himself

  274. gives all people

  275. life and breath

  276. and everything else

  277. God is at the very centre

  278. he sustains

  279. and he maintains

  280. all of life

  281. he is the source

  282. of life

  283. and again

  284. if you're to talk to people

  285. they just can't handle that

  286. people don't like

  287. to think

  288. that somehow

  289. God is

  290. the giver of life

  291. and at the centre

  292. of life

  293. and they want to

  294. replace God

  295. and kind of move him

  296. out of the picture

  297. well again

  298. let's do that

  299. for a minute

  300. let's replace God

  301. and well

  302. who are we going

  303. to put instead

  304. into the centre

  305. well let's put ourselves

  306. into the centre

  307. and what do we get

  308. when we're at the centre

  309. of life

  310. we get disorder

  311. and chaos

  312. let me give an example

  313. the way the planets

  314. are set out

  315. the sun

  316. in our solar system

  317. is at the centre

  318. of our universe

  319. and the planets

  320. all the planets

  321. they all orbit

  322. the sun

  323. the sun is here

  324. and all the planets

  325. orbit the sun

  326. that's what gives us

  327. the seasons

  328. that's what keeps

  329. everything the way it is

  330. and keeps everything

  331. in order

  332. now let's just change

  333. that order around

  334. a little bit

  335. let's take the sun out

  336. and let's put the earth

  337. into the middle

  338. and let everything else

  339. revolve around

  340. well what would happen

  341. you don't have to be

  342. a scientist to know

  343. that everything

  344. would just fall apart

  345. well that's what happens

  346. when we put ourselves

  347. at the centre

  348. when we move

  349. the sun

  350. s-o-n

  351. out of the centre

  352. and put ourselves

  353. into the middle

  354. we get chaos

  355. and disorder

  356. but look at who

  357. this God is

  358. the end of verse 25

  359. it says that he gives

  360. all people

  361. life

  362. and breath

  363. and everything else

  364. God sustains us

  365. in every way

  366. not just physically

  367. but also morally

  368. God is at the centre

  369. of our life

  370. without him

  371. we do not exist

  372. and without him

  373. we descend

  374. into chaos

  375. and disorder

  376. we can't replace

  377. God

  378. we need God

  379. the third thing

  380. then

  381. verse 26

  382. is that God

  383. is the purpose

  384. of all of life

  385. he gives us meaning

  386. verse 26

  387. from one man

  388. this is Adam

  389. he made

  390. every nation

  391. of people

  392. that they should

  393. inhabit the whole earth

  394. and here for me

  395. something so exciting

  396. he determined

  397. the time set for them

  398. he determined

  399. when each person

  400. was going to be born

  401. and if that doesn't

  402. blow your minds away

  403. look at the rest of it

  404. and he determined

  405. the exact places

  406. where they should live

  407. when you were born

  408. and which nation

  409. you would be born into

  410. and which country

  411. you were going to live

  412. you see what happens

  413. when people

  414. remove God

  415. out of this

  416. they say

  417. no we don't want

  418. the God

  419. who kind of controls

  420. thing

  421. and God

  422. who determines

  423. my life

  424. and tells me

  425. what happened

  426. and what's going

  427. to happen

  428. let us be the

  429. master of our

  430. destiny

  431. let us be the

  432. ones who decide

  433. what happens

  434. well I'll tell you

  435. what happens

  436. when we do that

  437. emptiness

  438. remember what we

  439. said

  440. without God

  441. we've come from

  442. nowhere

  443. we're going

  444. nowhere

  445. and such a view

  446. just leaves

  447. all of life

  448. empty of purpose

  449. and meaning

  450. we've just

  451. arrived here

  452. and we're going

  453. nowhere

  454. but

  455. verse 26

  456. he has

  457. determined

  458. the time

  459. set for us

  460. and the exact

  461. places

  462. where we should

  463. live

  464. that means

  465. our whole

  466. life

  467. has meaning

  468. and purpose

  469. that means

  470. our whole

  471. life

  472. is in

  473. control

  474. and that

  475. purpose

  476. look at

  477. verse 27

  478. God did

  479. this

  480. so that

  481. people

  482. would

  483. seek

  484. him

  485. and perhaps

  486. reach out

  487. and find

  488. him

  489. though he

  490. is not

  491. far from

  492. each one

  493. of us

  494. God

  495. has designed

  496. and ordered

  497. our life

  498. and our

  499. world

  500. in such

  501. a way

  502. that we

  503. would reach

  504. out to the

  505. God who

  506. gives us

  507. purpose

  508. verse 28

  509. for in

  510. him

  511. we live

  512. and move

  513. and have

  514. our being

  515. we were

  516. made

  517. to be in

  518. relationship

  519. with this

  520. creator

  521. life

  522. giving

  523. God

  524. this is

  525. where we

  526. find our

  527. meaning

  528. and our

  529. purpose

  530. and the

  531. good news

  532. is at the

  533. end of

  534. verse 28

  535. he's not

  536. far from

  537. each one

  538. of us

  539. he came

  540. in the

  541. person

  542. of his

  543. son

  544. Jesus

  545. Christ

  546. he's

  547. there

  548. you see

  549. we can't

  550. reject

  551. God

  552. we can't

  553. push him

  554. out of

  555. the equation

  556. we need

  557. God

  558. we can't

  559. replace him

  560. because if we

  561. are to remove

  562. God

  563. if we are to

  564. replace him

  565. if we are to

  566. reject him

  567. then we lose

  568. everything

  569. verse 29

  570. therefore

  571. since we are

  572. God's offspring

  573. we should not

  574. think that the

  575. divine being

  576. is like gold

  577. or silver

  578. or stone

  579. an image

  580. made by man's

  581. design

  582. and skill

  583. now isn't

  584. it absolutely

  585. crazy

  586. it's daft

  587. of us to

  588. think that

  589. our idols

  590. will give

  591. us

  592. what only

  593. God can

  594. give us

  595. it's ridiculous

  596. to think that

  597. we would look

  598. to something

  599. that we would

  600. set up as

  601. being God

  602. over and

  603. above our

  604. creator

  605. God

  606. we're living

  607. a lie

  608. if we think

  609. our God

  610. replacements

  611. are going to

  612. satisfy us

  613. and fill us

  614. the gods

  615. that we make

  616. they can't

  617. give us

  618. life

  619. they don't

  620. control

  621. life

  622. they will

  623. only destroy

  624. our life

  625. so Paul

  626. he sets

  627. out

  628. he says

  629. look

  630. we've all

  631. replaced

  632. God

  633. with

  634. something

  635. else

  636. or

  637. someone

  638. else

  639. but let

  640. me show

  641. you now

  642. who God

  643. is

  644. the creator

  645. of life

  646. the centre

  647. of life

  648. the purpose

  649. of all

  650. life

  651. we can't

  652. do without

  653. him

  654. we need

  655. him

  656. so third

  657. what is our

  658. response

  659. to this

  660. God

  661. what are we

  662. to do

  663. well verse

  664. 30

  665. in the past

  666. God

  667. overlooked

  668. such

  669. ignorance

  670. but now

  671. he commands

  672. all people

  673. everywhere

  674. to repent

  675. repentance

  676. is not

  677. just saying

  678. sorry

  679. we can all

  680. say sorry

  681. and just

  682. carry on

  683. but it's

  684. much more

  685. than that

  686. repentance

  687. is also

  688. about

  689. replacement

  690. when you

  691. think

  692. repentance

  693. think

  694. replacement

  695. it means

  696. turning away

  697. from our

  698. idols

  699. and turning

  700. to

  701. the living

  702. Jesus

  703. something we

  704. do

  705. every day

  706. it's not

  707. just something

  708. we do

  709. just to

  710. become a

  711. Christian

  712. we have

  713. to repent

  714. every day

  715. it means

  716. removing

  717. our God

  718. substitutes

  719. it means

  720. removing

  721. our idols

  722. the things

  723. that we

  724. trust

  725. the things

  726. that we

  727. build our

  728. lives on

  729. the things

  730. that we

  731. look to

  732. for meaning

  733. and purpose

  734. we

  735. turn away

  736. from them

  737. and we

  738. replace

  739. them

  740. with the

  741. living

  742. Jesus

  743. who alone

  744. can fill

  745. us and

  746. satisfy us

  747. we make

  748. him

  749. the centre

  750. of our

  751. lives

  752. and please

  753. note

  754. this is not

  755. an optional

  756. extra

  757. verse 30

  758. see what it

  759. says

  760. he commands

  761. all people

  762. everywhere

  763. to repent

  764. it's a

  765. command

  766. it's not

  767. if you

  768. would like

  769. to

  770. an absolute

  771. and radical

  772. call

  773. to change

  774. our lives

  775. to reorientate

  776. our lives

  777. to make

  778. Jesus

  779. central

  780. that means

  781. that Jesus

  782. becomes more

  783. valuable to

  784. you than

  785. any relationship

  786. that you are

  787. in or could

  788. wish for

  789. it means

  790. that Jesus

  791. is more

  792. precious to

  793. you than

  794. any desire

  795. or any

  796. other dream

  797. that you

  798. might have

  799. rather than

  800. worship

  801. something else

  802. or someone

  803. else

  804. we are to

  805. worship

  806. the risen

  807. Jesus

  808. Christ

  809. and the

  810. reason we

  811. are to

  812. repent

  813. look at

  814. verse 31

  815. is because

  816. God promises

  817. to judge

  818. the world

  819. verse 31

  820. for he

  821. has set

  822. a day

  823. when he

  824. will judge

  825. the world

  826. with justice

  827. by the

  828. man he

  829. has appointed

  830. who's that

  831. man

  832. well he

  833. has given

  834. proof of

  835. this to

  836. all people

  837. by raising

  838. him from

  839. the dead

  840. it's Jesus

  841. Christ

  842. and this

  843. is not

  844. fantasy

  845. this is

  846. reality

  847. God

  848. has set

  849. a day

  850. just as

  851. the children's

  852. referendum

  853. is going to

  854. take place

  855. on Saturday

  856. the 11th

  857. of November

  858. 2012

  859. the day

  860. has been

  861. set

  862. the referendum

  863. is going

  864. to happen

  865. so God

  866. has set

  867. a day

  868. in his

  869. diary

  870. and this

  871. is not

  872. just for a

  873. few people

  874. it's for

  875. everyone

  876. look at what

  877. it says

  878. verse 31

  879. God will

  880. judge

  881. the world

  882. no race

  883. or religion

  884. will be

  885. excluded

  886. all people

  887. will face

  888. the judgment

  889. no one

  890. is going

  891. to be

  892. excused

  893. go back

  894. to the

  895. beginning

  896. of verse

  897. 30

  898. it says

  899. in the

  900. past

  901. God

  902. overlooked

  903. such

  904. ignorance

  905. God in

  906. his mercy

  907. did not

  908. give us

  909. what we

  910. deserve

  911. but now

  912. that he's

  913. told us

  914. that his

  915. judgment

  916. is coming

  917. now that

  918. Jesus

  919. has risen

  920. from the

  921. dead

  922. now that

  923. he's

  924. given us

  925. proof

  926. there's

  927. no more

  928. excuses

  929. the world

  930. needs

  931. to repent

  932. you see

  933. removing

  934. God

  935. replacing

  936. God

  937. is not

  938. just a

  939. way of

  940. life

  941. it's not

  942. just another

  943. option

  944. that we

  945. can take

  946. it's an

  947. act of

  948. serious

  949. rebellion

  950. it is

  951. rejecting

  952. God's

  953. good and

  954. loving rule

  955. over our

  956. lives

  957. it's

  958. resisting

  959. his

  960. kind

  961. and

  962. generous

  963. care

  964. over our

  965. world

  966. and God

  967. looks down

  968. on him

  969. and he

  970. says I'm

  971. not going

  972. to allow

  973. you to

  974. remove me

  975. and to

  976. replace me

  977. forever

  978. I'm not

  979. going to

  980. allow the

  981. disorder

  982. and the

  983. chaos

  984. to continue

  985. I will

  986. not be

  987. treated

  988. as second

  989. best

  990. I will

  991. not be

  992. pushed

  993. out

  994. it's

  995. my world

  996. and you

  997. are my

  998. people

  999. and I

  1000. will come

  1001. and judge

  1002. and so

  1003. we all

  1004. need to

  1005. repent

  1006. and replace

  1007. our idols

  1008. our God

  1009. substitutes

  1010. with the

  1011. risen

  1012. Jesus

  1013. he is the

  1014. only one

  1015. who can

  1016. fulfill our

  1017. deepest

  1018. longings

  1019. he is the

  1020. only one

  1021. who can

  1022. forgive us

  1023. when we

  1024. fail

  1025. so he

  1026. sets it

  1027. out very

  1028. clearly

  1029. these are

  1030. the gods

  1031. that we

  1032. replace

  1033. we remove

  1034. God out

  1035. and we

  1036. set up

  1037. our own

  1038. gods

  1039. but look

  1040. at who

  1041. God is

  1042. the creator

  1043. of life

  1044. the sustainer

  1045. the giver

  1046. of all life

  1047. he gives

  1048. us purpose

  1049. we can't

  1050. afford to

  1051. leave him

  1052. out

  1053. and what's

  1054. our response

  1055. to this

  1056. we need

  1057. to repent

  1058. to remove

  1059. the things

  1060. that we

  1061. hold so

  1062. dearly

  1063. and put

  1064. Jesus

  1065. the risen

  1066. Jesus

  1067. at the

  1068. very centre

  1069. of our

  1070. lives

  1071. well let's

  1072. do that

  1073. now

  1074. in the

  1075. quietness

  1076. as we

  1077. pray

  1078. let's

  1079. just make

  1080. this

  1081. a personal

  1082. time of

  1083. confession

  1084. of repentance

  1085. turning away

  1086. from

  1087. what we

  1088. see is

  1089. important

  1090. and making

  1091. Jesus

  1092. the very

  1093. centre

  1094. of our

  1095. lives

  1096. let's

  1097. just do

  1098. that now

  1099. in the

  1100. quietness

  1101. so

  1102. there

  1103. if

  1104. you

  1105. can

  1106. say

  1107. only

  1108. to

  1109. just do

  1110. and

  1111. like

  1112. a

  1113. better

  1114. so

  1115. to

  1116. can

  1117. and

  1118. it

  1119. so

  1120. and

  1121. it

  1122. especially

  1123. you

  1124. and

  1125. you

  1126. and

  1127. you

  1128. a

  1129. the

  1130. every

  1131. very

  1132. day
