  1. Then what baptism did you receive?

  2. John's baptism, they replied.

  3. Paul said, John's baptism was a baptism of repentance.

  4. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.

  5. On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

  6. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

  7. There were about twelve men in all.

  8. Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.

  9. But some of them became obstinate.

  10. They refused to believe and publicly maligned the way.

  11. So Paul left them.

  12. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.

  13. This went on for two years, so that all of the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.

  14. God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick,

  15. and their illnesses were cured, and the evil spirits left them.

  16. Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed.

  17. They would say,

  18. In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.

  19. Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish high priest, were doing this.

  20. One day the evil spirit answered them,

  21. Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?

  22. Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all.

  23. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

  24. When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus,

  25. they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor.

  26. Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds.

  27. A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly.

  28. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to 50,000 drachma.

  29. In this way, the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

  30. Thanks very much, Ross.

  31. Well, keep your Bibles open there at Acts 19.

  32. And we'll have a look at this together.

  33. Well, let's pray first.

  34. Our Father, thank you again for your word.

  35. Thank you for its impact upon many lives.

  36. Thank you for the evidence of its work on campus in student life.

  37. And we pray that as the uncover, the Luke's Gospels, go and are read and are discussed with people,

  38. that they would find the real Jesus through those books.

  39. And we pray for ourselves now as we read and study Acts, that we also would meet Jesus.

  40. And we would understand more of who God is and what it is to be his church and to be his people.

  41. So we ask for your help in this this morning.

  42. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  43. Well, when I was growing up at home, my mum had a great way of diagnosing if we were sick or if we were healthy.

  44. She basically had two very simple tests.

  45. One was bleeding and the other one was temperature.

  46. So if I woke up in the morning complaining of a sore tummy or an aching head,

  47. well, she would apply her diagnosis test,

  48. which she said had been in her family for generations and done her very well and the same for us as well.

  49. So there I would be with my sore tummy and sore head and she'd say,

  50. Are you bleeding anywhere?

  51. No.

  52. Have you got a temperature?

  53. And we'd check the temperature.

  54. Well, you haven't got a temperature, you're not bleeding, you're okay.

  55. So get up and off you go to school.

  56. And that was basically the way that it was.

  57. Who needs a GP when you have a sophisticated health test like that?

  58. But the question we want to be asking is,

  59. How do we diagnose or how can we assess the health of the church?

  60. How do we know if this church is healthy or is it sick?

  61. How do we know if it's healthy or sick?

  62. Well, as Paul went on his church planting trips,

  63. he sought to establish churches that were healthy.

  64. Having returned from his trip to Europe,

  65. which we were looking at over the last couple of weeks,

  66. he makes it his business to go back to all of those churches

  67. that he's planted over the last five years to strengthen them.

  68. So chapter 18, verse 23, we read,

  69. After spending some time in Antioch,

  70. Paul set out from there,

  71. and Antioch was his home church,

  72. and he set out from there and he travelled from place to place

  73. throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia,

  74. which is modern-day Turkey,

  75. strengthening all the disciples.

  76. Chapter 19, verse 1,

  77. While Apollos was in Corinth,

  78. he was doing the same things there,

  79. Paul took the road through the interior

  80. and arrived at Ephesus.

  81. So for the next two chapters,

  82. Luke, who's the author of Acts,

  83. spends considerable time recording for us

  84. this particular visit to the city of Ephesus.

  85. And chapter 19 is primarily about his first visit

  86. as he establishes the church,

  87. and then chapter 20 is primarily about his second visit

  88. as he goes and strengthens the church,

  89. because he's all about wanting healthy churches.

  90. So what we want to do this morning

  91. is to go with Paul to Ephesus,

  92. and as we do,

  93. we'll discover what makes a healthy church.

  94. And there are four tests

  95. that we are going to apply

  96. to see if we are a healthy church

  97. or a sick church.

  98. And before we do that,

  99. I just wonder,

  100. is the recording device,

  101. has that been turned on?

  102. Does anybody know?

  103. It is, yeah.

  104. Thanks.

  105. So the first test is this.

  106. Are we genuinely converted?

  107. Are we genuinely converted?

  108. Well, look at chapter 19, verse 1.

  109. We're told there that he arrived at Ephesus,

  110. and there Paul found some disciples.

  111. Now there's a question mark over this.

  112. Are they really disciples?

  113. Because he asked this question in verse 2.

  114. He asked them,

  115. Did you receive the Holy Spirit

  116. when you believed?

  117. Because the mark of a genuine believer

  118. is that you have received the Holy Spirit.

  119. Verse 2.

  120. They answered,

  121. No, we have not even heard

  122. that there is a Holy Spirit.

  123. Now that seems very odd, doesn't it?

  124. Because how can you be a true disciple?

  125. How can you really be a Christian

  126. if you've never heard of the Holy Spirit?

  127. And that seems to be Paul's point.

  128. So verse 3.

  129. He asked them,

  130. Then what baptism did you receive?

  131. John's baptism, they replied.

  132. And Paul said,

  133. Well, John's baptism

  134. was a baptism of repentance.

  135. He told the people

  136. that they were to believe

  137. in the one coming after him,

  138. that is, in Jesus.

  139. So it seems that these

  140. so-called disciples

  141. that he's just bumped into

  142. had completely missed the point

  143. of John's teaching.

  144. Well, what was John's teaching?

  145. Well, go back to Luke's Gospel,

  146. chapter 3.

  147. Keep your finger in Acts 19.

  148. Go back to Luke's Gospel,

  149. chapter 3.

  150. So this is Luke's Gospel,

  151. which he wrote,

  152. and he also wrote Acts.

  153. And in Luke, chapter 3,

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  154. we read there

  155. that John's preaching

  156. was all about the way

  157. of preparing the way for Jesus.

  158. So he didn't want people

  159. to follow him.

  160. He wanted people

  161. to follow Jesus.

  162. So in Luke, chapter 3,

    Luke 3:3

  163. verse 3,

  164. we read that

  165. John went into all the country

  166. around the Jordan

  167. preaching a baptism of repentance

  168. for the forgiveness of sins.

  169. As it's written in the book

  170. of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

  171. a voice of one

  172. calling in the desert,

  173. prepare the way for the Lord.

  174. Make straight paths for him.

  175. Every valley shall be filled in,

  176. every mountain and hill made low.

  177. In other words,

  178. there's going to be an equality,

  179. a level playing field.

  180. The crooked road

  181. shall become straight,

  182. the rough way smooth,

  183. and all mankind

  184. will see God's salvation.

  185. Now go down to verse 15.

  186. The people were waiting expectantly

  187. and were all wondering

  188. in their hearts

  189. if John might possibly be the Christ,

  190. if he's Jesus.

  191. Verse 16,

  192. But John answered them all

  193. and said,

  194. I baptise you with water,

  195. but one more powerful

  196. and I will come.

  197. That's Jesus.

  198. The straps of whose sandals

  199. I am not worthy to untie.

  200. He will baptise you

  201. with the Holy Spirit

  202. and with fire.

  203. Now go back to Acts 19.

  204. You see,

  205. it's clear that these people,

  206. well,

  207. they'd heard about John the Baptist

  208. and it seems

  209. they were just simply

  210. followers of John.

  211. They were not really

  212. true disciples.

  213. They weren't followers

  214. of Jesus.

  215. They had claimed to be disciples,

  216. but they had never actually

  217. believed in Jesus

  218. and so they had never received

  219. the Holy Spirit.

  220. So in Acts 19,

    Acts 19:5

  221. verse 5,

  222. we read after Paul

  223. had spoken to them

  224. on hearing this,

  225. they were baptised

  226. into the name

  227. of the Lord Jesus.

  228. Baptism being that

  229. outward sign

  230. that they were now

  231. inwardly trusting

  232. in Jesus.

  233. And verse 6,

  234. When Paul placed

  235. his hands on them,

  236. the Holy Spirit

  237. came on them

  238. and they spoke

  239. in tongues

  240. and prophesied.

  241. And there were about

  242. twelve men

  243. in all.

  244. So from this account,

  245. we can have a clear picture

  246. of what genuine

  247. conversion really is.

  248. And I have it there

  249. on the screen.

  250. First and primarily,

  251. it is a trust

  252. in the person

  253. of Jesus Christ.

  254. So in verse 4,

  255. Paul is referring back

  256. to John the Baptist

  257. and he said,

  258. he was telling people

  259. to believe in the one

  260. coming after him

  261. that is in Jesus.

  262. So it is only faith

  263. in Jesus

  264. and his work

  265. on the cross

  266. that is going

  267. to save us

  268. and make us right

  269. with God.

  270. And then second,

  271. as a result

  272. of our trust

  273. in Jesus,

  274. is the receiving

  275. of the Holy Spirit

  276. in verse 6.

  277. So when they had come

  278. to believe,

  279. Paul placed his hands

  280. on them

  281. and the Holy Spirit

  282. came on them.

  283. You see,

  284. the Spirit comes

  285. at our conversion,

  286. not at some subsequent

  287. or later time,

  288. kind of years later

  289. or months later.

  290. It comes at our conversion.

  291. And then third,

  292. as a sign

  293. that we have trusted Jesus

  294. and that we have received

  295. the Spirit,

  296. there was the sign

  297. of baptism.

  298. In verse 5,

  299. on hearing this,

  300. they were baptized

  301. into the name

  302. of the Lord Jesus.

  303. And that's the pattern

  304. that we see

  305. all the way through Acts

  306. that people heard,

  307. they believed,

  308. they received the Spirit

  309. and they were baptized.

  310. Baptism isn't a means

  311. to salvation,

  312. it is simply a sign

  313. of our salvation

  314. that we have come

  315. to trust

  316. in the Lord Jesus.

  317. So Paul was concerned

  318. to establish

  319. and make sure

  320. that they were

  321. actually genuinely

  322. believers

  323. in the church.

  324. But I'm sure

  325. we're all asking

  326. the question,

  327. what about verse 6?

  328. That they spoke

  329. in tongues

  330. and prophesied.

  331. Is that not a mark

  332. of genuine conversion?

  333. Should I be speaking

  334. in tongues?

  335. Is that not

  336. what it's about?

  337. Well, here is where

  338. I believe

  339. my Pentecostal friends

  340. and I have them

  341. and I'm good friends

  342. with them,

  343. but I think

  344. this is where

  345. they've got it wrong.

  346. Go back to

  347. chapter 2 of Acts

  348. where we are first

  349. told of the Spirit's

  350. coming.

  351. So the Spirit

  352. has come,

  353. the disciples

  354. have been

  355. prophesying,

  356. they've been preaching,

  357. they've been telling

  358. of the great things

  359. of God

  360. and here is how

  361. Peter understands

  362. the coming of the

  363. Spirit at Pentecost

  364. in verse 32.

  365. Chapter 2,

  366. verse 32,

  367. it says,

  368. God raised this

  369. Jesus to life

  370. and we are all

  371. witnesses of the fact.

  372. Exalted to the

  373. right hand of God,

  374. he has received

  375. from the Father

  376. the promised

  377. Holy Spirit

  378. and has poured out

  379. what you now

  380. see and hear.

  381. verse 37,

  382. when the people

  383. heard this

  384. they were cut

  385. to the heart

  386. and they said

  387. to Peter

  388. and the other

  389. apostles,

  390. well what should

  391. we do?

  392. And Peter

  393. replied,

  394. repent.

  395. Repentance there

  396. is always in

  397. connection with

  398. faith or with

  399. trust.

  400. Repent and be

  401. baptized,

  402. every one of you

  403. in the name of

  404. Jesus Christ

  405. for the forgiveness

  406. of your sins

  407. and you will

  408. receive the gift

  409. of the Holy Spirit.

  410. The promise,

  411. that's the gift

  412. of the Spirit,

  413. is for you

  414. and for your

  415. children

  416. and for all

  417. who are far

  418. off,

  419. for all whom

  420. the Lord our

  421. God will call.

  422. Now the promise

  423. of the Spirit,

  424. he's saying

  425. it's not just

  426. for the Jews

  427. because that's

  428. who he was

  429. speaking to there,

  430. but he also

  431. says it's for

  432. those who are

  433. far off,

  434. meaning not

  435. just for Jewish

  436. people and not

  437. just here in

  438. Jerusalem and

  439. not just for now,

  440. but for people

  441. who are Gentiles,

  442. who live far

  443. off and for

  444. those who will

  445. in time come

  446. to Christ.

  447. People from

  448. every nation,

  449. even for people

  450. in far away

  451. and Gentile

  452. places like

  453. Ephesus.

  454. The Spirit is

  455. for all people.

  456. So when these

  457. Ephesians in

  458. chapter 19

  459. when they

  460. received the

  461. Spirit,

  462. they did begin

  463. to speak in

  464. tongues and

  465. prophesy.

  466. It was God's

  467. unique sign,

  468. his special

  469. confirmation

  470. to these people

  471. that yes,

  472. the Spirit

  473. does come upon

  474. them.

  475. In other words,

  476. speaking in

  477. tongues is not

  478. an essential

  479. mark of

  480. genuine

  481. conversion.

  482. Rather,

  483. through the

  484. flow of Acts

  485. we see that

  486. he is saying

  487. that yes,

  488. the Spirit

  489. is also for

  490. Gentiles,

  491. for people

  492. who are

  493. non-Jews.

  494. They too

  495. receive the

  496. Spirit.

  497. It doesn't

  498. come at some

  499. subsequent

  500. later time.

  501. It doesn't

  502. come when we

  503. necessarily speak

  504. in tongues.

  505. It comes at

  506. our conversion.

  507. So the true

  508. marks are

  509. trust in

  510. Jesus,

  511. receiving the

  512. Spirit,

  513. and the sign

  514. that we have

  515. done all of

  516. that is being

  517. baptized.

  518. baptized.

  519. Now, before

  520. we move on,

  521. we need to

  522. ask ourselves

  523. the question,

  524. are we

  525. genuinely

  526. converted?

  527. Have I

  528. trusted in

  529. Jesus for

  530. myself?

  531. Have I

  532. received the

  533. Spirit?

  534. Is there

  535. evidence of

  536. his work in

  537. my life?

  538. I may say

  539. I'm a disciple,

  540. but is there

  541. evidence of

  542. the Spirit's

  543. work in my

  544. life?

  545. And if

  546. there isn't

  547. that evidence

  548. as Paul

  549. discovered with

  550. these disciples,

  551. then it has

  552. to go back a

  553. step and say,

  554. well, have

  555. you trusted in

  556. Jesus?

  557. Well, when we

  558. do, we

  559. receive the

  560. Spirit, but

  561. maybe we have

  562. never been

  563. baptized as a

  564. sign to

  565. others, that

  566. public confirmation

  567. that yes, I

  568. have trusted,

  569. and yes, I

  570. have received

  571. the Spirit.

  572. Have you

  573. been baptized?

  574. These are

  575. questions we

  576. need to ask,

  577. and we need

  578. to deal with.

  579. So that's the

  580. first test.

  581. Are we

  582. genuinely

  583. converted?

  584. The second

  585. test is this.

  586. Are we

  587. committed to

  588. discipleship?

  589. Verse 8.

  590. Paul entered

  591. the synagogue

  592. and he spoke

  593. boldly there for

  594. three months,

  595. arguing persuasively

  596. about the

  597. kingdom of God.

  598. Now, the

  599. kingdom of God

  600. is a summary

  601. term for the

  602. same message

  603. that Jesus

  604. preached to

  605. his disciples

  606. just before

  607. his return

  608. to heaven.

  609. We read

  610. that in

  611. Acts 1.

  612. And Jesus

  613. was about

  614. telling people

  615. that he was

  616. God's promised

  617. Messiah, God's

  618. chosen king,

  619. who would come

  620. to establish

  621. his loving rule,

  622. calling people

  623. to repent,

  624. and was offering

  625. the promise of

  626. restoration.

  627. And the

  628. proof that

  629. Jesus was

  630. God's king

  631. was that he

  632. was alive,

  633. that he had

  634. risen from

  635. the dead.

  636. and this

  637. was the

  638. same message

  639. that Paul

  640. began to

  641. teach.

  642. So in

  643. verse 9

  644. we read,

  645. but some

  646. of them

  647. became

  648. obstinate

  649. and they

  650. refused to

  651. believe

  652. and publicly

  653. maligned

  654. the way.

  655. But Paul

  656. didn't give up

  657. on them.

  658. Rest of

  659. verse 9.

  660. So Paul

  661. left them

  662. and he

  663. took the

  664. disciples,

  665. these new

  666. believers,

  667. with him

  668. and he

  669. had

  670. discussions

  671. daily

  672. in the

  673. lecture

  674. hall

  675. of

  676. Tyrannus.

  677. You see,

  678. Paul wasn't

  679. just about

  680. conversionism,

  681. he was

  682. about

  683. discipleship.

  684. He wasn't

  685. just about

  686. wanting

  687. bums on

  688. seats and

  689. to say,

  690. oh look how

  691. many people

  692. have come

  693. to Christ.

  694. He was

  695. wanting to

  696. train them,

  697. ordinary

  698. people,

  699. to see them

  700. committed to

  701. discipleship,

  702. to grow

  703. them in

  704. their faith.

  705. Because coming

  706. to faith in

  707. Christ was

  708. crucial,

  709. but growing

  710. in Christ

  711. was essential.

  712. So each

  713. day about

  714. mid-afternoon,

  715. when people

  716. took a rest

  717. from work,

  718. or they'd go

  719. and have

  720. their lunch,

  721. they would

  722. go down

  723. and meet

  724. Paul down

  725. at the

  726. local

  727. lecture

  728. hall of

  729. Tyrannus,

  730. and there

  731. they would

  732. begin to

  733. discuss

  734. things and

  735. talk things

  736. through about

  737. what the

  738. kingdom of

  739. God was

  740. all about.

  741. This was

  742. perhaps the

  743. first intentional

  744. discipleship

  745. program.

  746. the believers

  747. gathering around,

  748. learning and

  749. growing and

  750. deepening in

  751. their faith.

  752. And look at

  753. the results of

  754. this discipleship,

  755. verse 10.

  756. This went on

  757. for two years

  758. so that all

  759. the Jews and

  760. all the Greeks

  761. who lived in

  762. the province

  763. of Asia,

  764. not just in

  765. Ephesus,

  766. but in the

  767. whole province,

  768. heard the

  769. word of the

  770. Lord.

  771. That means

  772. that these

  773. young Christians,

  774. as they were

  775. discipled,

  776. became mature,

  777. church

  778. planters.

  779. They grew

  780. in their

  781. faith and

  782. as they

  783. began to

  784. move out

  785. into the

  786. province of

  787. Asia,

  788. so all

  789. these other

  790. people began

  791. to hear the

  792. word of

  793. the Lord.

  794. They were

  795. equipped to

  796. introduce people

  797. to Jesus and

  798. to encourage

  799. them to do

  800. the same.

  801. Now I don't

  802. think it's any

  803. different for us

  804. today.

  805. And

  806. discipleship is

  807. crucial for us

  808. as a church

  809. family.

  810. It happens

  811. formally as

  812. we meet

  813. together like

  814. this on a

  815. Sunday morning

  816. and in some

  817. sense we are

  818. doing discipleship

  819. right now as

  820. we open up the

  821. Bible and learn

  822. what God has to

  823. teach us.

  824. But it also

  825. happens informally

  826. as we meet in

  827. our gospel

  828. communities on a

  829. Wednesday or as

  830. we meet one to

  831. one with each

  832. other.

  833. We open up the

  834. Bible together.

  835. We gather around

  836. God's word.

  837. We want to hear

  838. what God is saying

  839. to us, to listen

  840. to it, to

  841. discuss it and

  842. to apply it to

  843. our lives.

  844. Now if we're not

  845. taking time to

  846. learn about the

  847. kingdom of God

  848. like these

  849. disciples did,

  850. then we're going

  851. to become very

  852. unhealthy.

  853. Our Christian

  854. life is going to

  855. become sick.

  856. We're never going

  857. to mature.

  858. We're never going

  859. to grow up and

  860. we're never going

  861. to be the church

  862. that God calls us

  863. to be.

  864. So let me ask

  865. you that question

  866. again.

  867. Are we committed

  868. to discipleship?

  869. Because a healthy

  870. church takes

  871. discipleship

  872. seriously.

  873. So that's the

  874. second test.

  875. The first one,

  876. are we genuinely

  877. converted?

  878. The second one,

  879. are we committed

  880. to discipleship?

  881. And the third

  882. one is this,

  883. are we following

  884. the authentic

  885. gospel?

  886. Now Ephesus was

  887. a large city

  888. with lots of

  889. goings on,

  890. all kinds of

  891. religions were

  892. there,

  893. and there was

  894. all kinds of

  895. magic practices.

  896. Verse 19

  897. tells us that

  898. because there

  899. were a number

  900. of people there

  901. who practiced

  902. sorcery,

  903. a form of

  904. magic.

  905. magic.

  906. So the question

  907. here is,

  908. well what were

  909. the people to

  910. believe and

  911. who are we

  912. to believe?

  913. How are we

  914. to work out

  915. what is

  916. counterfeit

  917. and what is

  918. actually

  919. authentic?

  920. And there's

  921. lots of teaching

  922. going on which

  923. we can hear from

  924. all kinds of

  925. different churches

  926. and you can

  927. turn on the

  928. television and

  929. watch the God

  930. channel and

  931. we've got to

  932. work out what's

  933. counterfeit and

  934. what's authentic.

  935. What are we to

  936. actually believe?

  937. Well as Paul

  938. taught the

  939. gospel,

  940. God confirmed

  941. the truth of

  942. his message so

  943. that we can

  944. know this is

  945. the truth.

  946. Look at verse

  947. 11.

  948. We're told

  949. there that God

  950. did extraordinary

  951. miracles through

  952. Paul.

  953. Now we're used

  954. to miracles as

  955. we read through

  956. Acts, but we're

  957. told here that

  958. this is

  959. extraordinary,

  960. this is beyond

  961. what happened,

  962. this never

  963. happened.

  964. And what did

  965. happen?

  966. Verse 12,

  967. so that even

  968. handkerchiefs and

  969. aprons that had

  970. touched Paul,

  971. commentators

  972. suggest that they

  973. were probably

  974. rags that he

  975. used in his

  976. workshop whenever

  977. he was doing

  978. his tent making,

  979. these rags were

  980. taken to the

  981. sick and their

  982. illnesses were

  983. cured and their

  984. evil spirits

  985. left them.

  986. Now that is

  987. extraordinary.

  988. And it's not

  989. some kind of

  990. mind manipulation

  991. to try and

  992. trick people into

  993. coming disciples.

  994. This was a real

  995. miracle.

  996. People were

  997. healed and evil

  998. spirits left

  999. people.

  1000. So what's it all

  1001. about?

  1002. Well I think it's

  1003. God's way of

  1004. confirming that the

  1005. gospel that Paul

  1006. was preaching to

  1007. these people was

  1008. authentic, it

  1009. could be believed

  1010. and it was true.

  1011. In fact the

  1012. following event

  1013. proves the point

  1014. in verse 13.

  1015. There were some

  1016. Jews who went

  1017. around driving out

  1018. evil spirits and

  1019. they tried to

  1020. invoke the name

  1021. of the Lord

  1022. Jesus over those

  1023. who were demon

  1024. possessed.

  1025. You see there

  1026. were all kinds

  1027. of magic practices

  1028. and religious

  1029. beliefs in

  1030. Ephesus and

  1031. they were all

  1032. claiming to be

  1033. the power.

  1034. They were all

  1035. saying well if

  1036. you follow me

  1037. if you do

  1038. this if you

  1039. do that it's

  1040. going to go

  1041. well for you.

  1042. So it wasn't

  1043. uncommon for

  1044. people to use

  1045. or to rob what

  1046. seemed to be

  1047. working.

  1048. So they'd heard

  1049. about Paul and

  1050. all the things

  1051. that he was

  1052. doing and they

  1053. thought well maybe

  1054. if we kind of

  1055. use the words

  1056. that Paul does

  1057. maybe we can do

  1058. the same things.

  1059. So look at the

  1060. rest of verse 13.

  1061. They would say

  1062. in the name of

  1063. Jesus whom Paul

  1064. preaches I command

  1065. you to come out.

  1066. seven sons of

  1067. Sceva.

  1068. Well who was

  1069. Sceva?

  1070. Well he was a

  1071. Jewish priest and

  1072. his sons were all

  1073. involved in it.

  1074. One day the evil

  1075. spirit answered

  1076. them.

  1077. Jesus I know

  1078. and I know

  1079. about Paul

  1080. but who are

  1081. you?

  1082. now that's

  1083. frightening for

  1084. them isn't it?

  1085. Even the demons

  1086. know what is

  1087. counterfeit and

  1088. what is authentic.

  1089. They know who

  1090. has the ultimate

  1091. power.

  1092. They know that

  1093. it's only the

  1094. risen Lord Jesus

  1095. who gives the

  1096. power to be able

  1097. to do this.

  1098. But who are

  1099. you?

  1100. Who are you

  1101. telling me to

  1102. come out?

  1103. I don't respond

  1104. to you.

  1105. Verse 16.

  1106. Then the men

  1107. who had the

  1108. evil spirit jumped

  1109. on them,

  1110. overpowered them

  1111. and gave them

  1112. such a beating

  1113. that they ran

  1114. out of the

  1115. house naked

  1116. and bleeding.

  1117. Well I bet

  1118. that was a story

  1119. that went round

  1120. the town.

  1121. What excuse

  1122. did they give

  1123. when they got

  1124. home with no

  1125. clothes on I

  1126. wonder?

  1127. Hmm?

  1128. You see the

  1129. name of Jesus

  1130. is not magical.

  1131. It has no

  1132. power.

  1133. Just somebody

  1134. saying Jesus

  1135. is no more

  1136. powerful than

  1137. somebody saying

  1138. Johnny.

  1139. it doesn't

  1140. do anything.

  1141. But the

  1142. person of

  1143. Jesus,

  1144. the risen

  1145. Lord Jesus,

  1146. he does have

  1147. ultimate power.

  1148. He has supreme

  1149. authority over

  1150. all evil

  1151. and he continues

  1152. to exercise

  1153. that power

  1154. when and how

  1155. he wills.

  1156. Because it

  1157. wasn't Paul

  1158. who did the

  1159. miracles.

  1160. Look at

  1161. verse 11.

  1162. God did

  1163. extraordinary

  1164. miracles through

  1165. Paul.

  1166. and the

  1167. purpose of

  1168. all of these

  1169. miracles was

  1170. to confirm

  1171. the authentic

  1172. gospel that

  1173. Paul preached.

  1174. You could

  1175. believe the

  1176. message because

  1177. of what had

  1178. happened but

  1179. also to

  1180. convince these

  1181. Ephesian people

  1182. who were deeply

  1183. involved in

  1184. magic that

  1185. Jesus, the

  1186. risen Jesus,

  1187. has supreme

  1188. power and

  1189. authority.

  1190. So verse

  1191. 17.

  1192. When this

  1193. became known

  1194. to the Jews

  1195. and the Greeks

  1196. living in

  1197. Ephesus, they

  1198. were all seized

  1199. with fear and

  1200. the name of the

  1201. Lord Jesus was

  1202. held in high

  1203. honour.

  1204. Now God may

  1205. choose to do

  1206. extraordinary

  1207. miracles today.

  1208. Who are we to

  1209. stop what God

  1210. does?

  1211. He may choose

  1212. extraordinary

  1213. things to

  1214. prove the

  1215. authenticity of

  1216. his gospel.

  1217. However, what

  1218. God has

  1219. already done

  1220. and these

  1221. miracles are

  1222. also recorded

  1223. for us today

  1224. is evidence

  1225. for us today

  1226. and that's

  1227. what the

  1228. Uncover book

  1229. Luke is all

  1230. about because

  1231. there's evidence

  1232. there to tell

  1233. us that this

  1234. is all true

  1235. that we can

  1236. believe the

  1237. authentic gospel

  1238. of the risen

  1239. Jesus.

  1240. So here's the

  1241. third test.

  1242. are we

  1243. following the

  1244. authentic gospel

  1245. or are we

  1246. chasing some

  1247. other kind of

  1248. counterfeit?

  1249. Are we running

  1250. after other

  1251. things?

  1252. It's not

  1253. unnormal to

  1254. turn on the

  1255. telly to the

  1256. God channel

  1257. and you will

  1258. find people who

  1259. will say send

  1260. us in your

  1261. money and we'll

  1262. send you this

  1263. hanky or this

  1264. little bit of

  1265. water and you

  1266. will get this

  1267. happen to you

  1268. and this

  1269. healing and

  1270. everything else

  1271. and people

  1272. do it.

  1273. I certainly

  1274. wouldn't want to

  1275. hand my hanky

  1276. to anybody and

  1277. nobody would

  1278. want my hanky

  1279. either.

  1280. What is

  1281. authentic?

  1282. What is

  1283. counterfeit?

  1284. We have

  1285. evidence here

  1286. through the

  1287. miracles recorded

  1288. for us that

  1289. we can believe

  1290. the gospel.

  1291. And the

  1292. fourth test is

  1293. this.

  1294. Are we

  1295. practicing

  1296. ongoing

  1297. repentance?

  1298. Now very

  1299. often we think

  1300. of repentance

  1301. as a one-off

  1302. event.

  1303. But real

  1304. repentance,

  1305. genuine

  1306. repentance,

  1307. is ongoing

  1308. in our lives.

  1309. Verse 18.

  1310. Many of

  1311. those who

  1312. believed now

  1313. came and

  1314. openly confessed

  1315. their evil

  1316. deeds.

  1317. Now I

  1318. understand it

  1319. here that

  1320. these were

  1321. genuine

  1322. believers who

  1323. because of

  1324. what has just

  1325. happened and

  1326. the evidence

  1327. of what they

  1328. have seen

  1329. have come to

  1330. see that they

  1331. need to go on

  1332. and change

  1333. things in their

  1334. behaviour and

  1335. in their life.

  1336. And I think

  1337. that's true for

  1338. all of us.

  1339. When we become

  1340. followers of

  1341. Jesus we don't

  1342. have everything

  1343. sorted out all

  1344. at once.

  1345. It takes time.

  1346. We live under

  1347. Christ through

  1348. and when he

  1349. shows us

  1350. things in our

  1351. life that

  1352. don't match

  1353. up to

  1354. Christ we

  1355. change them

  1356. and we

  1357. deal with

  1358. them and

  1359. that seems

  1360. to be the

  1361. case here.

  1362. Verse 19.

  1363. There were a

  1364. number who

  1365. practised

  1366. sorcery and

  1367. they brought

  1368. their scrolls

  1369. together and

  1370. they burned

  1371. them publicly.

  1372. I think this

  1373. is a sense of

  1374. ongoing repentance

  1375. here.

  1376. Bringing all

  1377. of their lives

  1378. under the rule

  1379. of the risen

  1380. Jesus and

  1381. then changing

  1382. things that

  1383. need to be

  1384. changed.

  1385. And perhaps

  1386. what marks

  1387. this as

  1388. real repentance

  1389. and look at

  1390. it here in

  1391. verses 18 and

  1392. 19 is the

  1393. public nature

  1394. of it all.

  1395. Repentance

  1396. isn't always

  1397. private.

  1398. Look at

  1399. verse 18.

  1400. First they

  1401. openly confessed

  1402. what they had

  1403. done.

  1404. You see

  1405. they wanted

  1406. people to

  1407. know that

  1408. they themselves

  1409. knew that

  1410. they had

  1411. done wrong.

  1412. Other people

  1413. could see that

  1414. their practice

  1415. was wrong

  1416. but they also

  1417. wanted other

  1418. people to see

  1419. that yes I

  1420. also see in

  1421. my own life

  1422. that I've got

  1423. it wrong.

  1424. And they

  1425. owned up to

  1426. it.

  1427. They wanted

  1428. people to see

  1429. how they had

  1430. turned from

  1431. their evil

  1432. deeds and

  1433. were now

  1434. committed to

  1435. living a

  1436. different way.

  1437. They openly

  1438. confessed.

  1439. But more

  1440. than that

  1441. verse 19

  1442. those who

  1443. had scrolls

  1444. burned them

  1445. publicly.

  1446. because repentance

  1447. is so much

  1448. more than

  1449. just words.

  1450. It's not

  1451. just a case

  1452. of saying

  1453. sorry and

  1454. that's it.

  1455. Move on.

  1456. Thanks very

  1457. much.

  1458. Well here

  1459. was evidence.

  1460. Here was

  1461. demonstration that

  1462. what they said

  1463. with their lips

  1464. what they said

  1465. in their minds

  1466. was actually

  1467. true.

  1468. They went and

  1469. got their

  1470. scrolls,

  1471. brought them

  1472. publicly and

  1473. then set fire

  1474. to them and

  1475. got rid of

  1476. them.

  1477. People could

  1478. see by their

  1479. deliberate action

  1480. that they

  1481. had turned

  1482. from their

  1483. past lifestyle.

  1484. They were

  1485. turning from

  1486. these practices

  1487. that didn't

  1488. line up to

  1489. Christ.

  1490. And that's

  1491. what real

  1492. repentance is.

  1493. It's ongoing.

  1494. It's confessed

  1495. publicly and

  1496. it is proved

  1497. by action.

  1498. And let's

  1499. remember real

  1500. repentance is

  1501. costly.

  1502. Look at the

  1503. rest of verse

  1504. 19.

  1505. when they

  1506. calculated the

  1507. value of the

  1508. scrolls, the

  1509. total came to

  1510. 50,000 drachmas.

  1511. Now a drachma

  1512. we're told is a

  1513. day's wage.

  1514. And from my

  1515. calculation that's

  1516. a combined total

  1517. of 5 million

  1518. euro all up in

  1519. smoke.

  1520. In other words,

  1521. their money,

  1522. their reputation,

  1523. their respect,

  1524. their comfort,

  1525. was no

  1526. substitute for

  1527. the riches that

  1528. they were now

  1529. beginning to

  1530. discover and

  1531. find in Jesus

  1532. Christ.

  1533. They were quite

  1534. happy to put all

  1535. of that to one

  1536. side.

  1537. All for the

  1538. riches that they

  1539. would find in

  1540. Christ.

  1541. So the question

  1542. is, do we

  1543. practice real

  1544. repentance?

  1545. Or do we just

  1546. say sorry and

  1547. kind of move on

  1548. and that's it?

  1549. Is there any

  1550. evidence, is there

  1551. action that we

  1552. are turning aside

  1553. from these things

  1554. that we need

  1555. to?

  1556. A healthy

  1557. church needs to

  1558. get into the

  1559. habit of

  1560. repenting well.

  1561. So here are

  1562. four marks or

  1563. signs of a

  1564. healthy church.

  1565. Genuine

  1566. conversion, true

  1567. discipleship, the

  1568. authentic gospel,

  1569. gospel, and

  1570. real repentance.

  1571. And look what

  1572. happens when there

  1573. is a healthy

  1574. church, verse

  1575. 20.

  1576. In this way the

  1577. word of the

  1578. Lord spread

  1579. widely and

  1580. grew in

  1581. power.

  1582. People looked

  1583. in on these

  1584. believers, this

  1585. church in

  1586. Ephesus, and

  1587. they could see

  1588. the change that

  1589. it was having

  1590. in people's

  1591. lives and in

  1592. their families,

  1593. the radical

  1594. change that it

  1595. was doing.

  1596. And it

  1597. began to

  1598. spread and

  1599. began to

  1600. grow in

  1601. power and

  1602. other people

  1603. came to

  1604. Christ.

  1605. Paul was

  1606. concerned to

  1607. establish a

  1608. healthy church.

  1609. And here in

  1610. Carragoline we're

  1611. concerned to go

  1612. on growing as

  1613. a healthy

  1614. church.

  1615. church.

  1616. But we need

  1617. to ask these

  1618. questions again

  1619. in our own

  1620. lives and

  1621. together to

  1622. make sure that

  1623. we are going

  1624. the way God

  1625. calls us to.

  1626. Because it is

  1627. essential to

  1628. God's ongoing

  1629. mission.

  1630. If we want to

  1631. see the church

  1632. grow, we need

  1633. a healthy

  1634. church.

  1635. So let's

  1636. pray that God

  1637. will continue to

  1638. help us to be

  1639. that.

  1640. Lord,

  1641. our Father God,

  1642. we ask that you

  1643. would give us

  1644. grace, that you

  1645. would empower us

  1646. with your

  1647. Spirit, that you

  1648. would go on

  1649. changing us and

  1650. transforming us

  1651. so that each

  1652. day when we

  1653. meet together

  1654. formally like

  1655. this or

  1656. informally during

  1657. the week, that

  1658. we would grow as

  1659. your disciples,

  1660. filled with your

  1661. Spirit, following

  1662. the one true

  1663. gospel, repenting

  1664. and confessing to

  1665. one another, and

  1666. making those

  1667. radical changes

  1668. that we need

  1669. to in our

  1670. lives.

  1671. We ask for

  1672. your grace, that

  1673. we would go on

  1674. being healthy.

  1675. In Jesus' name,

  1676. Amen.

  1677. Amen.

  1678. Well, let's sing

  1679. together as we

  1680. seek to apply

  1681. this and I

  1682. guess to sing

  1683. some of these

  1684. truths into our

  1685. lives.

  1686. Let your

  1687. kingdom come,

  1688. let your will be

  1689. done, so that

  1690. everyone might

  1691. know your name.

  1692. Let's stand

  1693. together as we

  1694. sing this.

  1695. Amen.

  1696. Amen.

  1697. Amen.

  1698. Amen.

  1699. Amen.

  1700. Amen.

  1701. Amen.

  1702. Amen.

  1703. Amen.

  1704. Amen.

  1705. Amen.

  1706. Amen.

  1707. Amen.

  1708. Amen.
