  1. At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth.

  2. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

  3. In a loud voice she exclaimed, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear.

  4. But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

  5. As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.

  6. Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished.

  7. And Mary said, My soul glories the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.

  8. For now all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me.

  9. Holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.

  10. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm. He has scattered those who are proud in their innermost thoughts.

  11. He has brought down rulers from their thrones, but has lifted up the humble.

  12. He has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty.

  13. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abram and his descendants forever,

  14. even as he said to our fathers.

  15. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months, and then returned home.

  16. Thanks very much, Ross.

  17. Thanks.

  18. I haven't any sheets with notes, but there is a new sheet,

  19. which has got a great Christmas theme on the inside.

  20. I wasn't very observant.

  21. I even looked at it and read it and didn't realise that it was actually in the shape of a Christmas tree.

  22. So, sorry about that.

  23. But it's very nice.

  24. Yeah, but there are new sheets, and on the back there's a place where you can take notes.

  25. So let's look at this familiar song of Mary, often called the Magnificat.

  26. And we're going to look at that specifically this morning.

  27. But before we do, we're going to pray and ask for God's help.

  28. So let's pray right now.

  29. Our Father God, we thank you so much that we have a record of the story,

  30. the true story of the coming of Christ.

  31. And we pray that these words that we look at, that may be familiar,

  32. maybe we've heard them sung already this Christmas,

  33. that they would penetrate deep into our lives,

  34. bringing a fresh understanding,

  35. but by the power of your Holy Spirit,

  36. that they would transform us and change us,

  37. so that we become the people that you intend us to be.

  38. So we ask for your help in Jesus' name.

  39. Amen.

  40. Enjoy your Christmas.

  41. Those were some of the words that I was writing in my Christmas cards to some relatives this week.

  42. It's the sort of thing that we say to our friends as we've been leaving work

  43. or we bump into somebody while we've been out shopping.

  44. Enjoy your Christmas.

  45. Well, how are we meant to enjoy Christmas?

  46. Because for many people, Christmas is anything but joyful.

  47. Like how is the community of Newtown in the US

  48. who endured those terrible school shootings meant to enjoy Christmas?

  49. Or the families that we've heard about in recent days

  50. who are coping with the suicide of a father or a couple of daughters.

  51. How are they meant to enjoy Christmas?

  52. You see, for many people, Christmas is anything but joyful.

  53. Perhaps you know somebody who's lost a job

  54. and it's, you know, it's financially tight and it's been a struggle.

  55. Maybe somebody's been diagnosed with a serious illness.

  56. Where are we to find joy when life is turned upside down?

  57. Well, Luke's account of the Christmas story is one that is filled with joy.

  58. Luke opens his gospel in chapter 1 with the announcement of two births.

  59. The first birth concerns Elizabeth and Zachariah.

  60. We read about them in chapter 1, verse 7.

  61. They had no children because Elizabeth was barren

  62. and they were both well on in years.

  63. They were past the age of having children.

  64. But God had different ideas.

  65. Verse 13.

  66. But the angel said to him,

  67. Do not be afraid, Zachariah.

  68. Your prayer has been heard.

  69. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son

  70. and you are to give him the name John.

  71. This would be John the Baptist.

  72. Verse 14.

  73. He will be a joy and a delight to you

  74. and many will rejoice because of his birth.

  75. Now we can understand parents who get excited

  76. and who are joyful because they're going to have a child

  77. and their close friends would be joyful.

  78. But Luke tells us here in verse 14

  79. that many will rejoice because of his birth.

  80. Well, why would people who don't even know this family

  81. be filled with joy?

  82. Well, the answer comes in verse 16 of chapter 1.

  83. This is telling us what John will do when he grows up.

  84. Verse 16.

  85. Many of the people of Israel will John,

  86. that's he, will bring back to the Lord their God

  87. and he will go on before the Lord.

  88. What will we do?

  89. Look at the end of verse 17.

  90. To make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

  91. John was to be an announcer.

  92. He was to stand before the people

  93. and announce good news to tell people

  94. that God's Messiah, Jesus Christ, was coming.

  95. The long-awaited King,

  96. who has come to renew broken lives

  97. and restore this disordered world,

  98. was about to come and enter into this world.

  99. That's why many people would rejoice.

  100. But then there was the announcement of another birth.

  101. We read of that in verse 31 of chapter 1.

  102. Mary is told she's going to have a baby.

  103. And the angel said to her, verse 31,

  104. you will be with child and give birth to a son

  105. and you are to give him the name Jesus.

  106. He will be great and will be called

  107. Son of the Most High.

  108. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David

  109. and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever.

  110. His kingdom will never end.

  111. Here's the announcement that an eternal king

  112. with absolute power and supreme authority

  113. was going to bring justice and peace.

  114. And on hearing this news,

  115. Mary, who's going to have this child,

  116. goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth,

  117. who's also pregnant with John.

  118. And we read of this meeting in verse 41.

  119. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting,

  120. the baby leaped in her womb

  121. and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

  122. Now we're told what the significance

  123. of this leap in the womb is.

  124. Look at verse 44.

  125. As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears,

  126. the baby in my womb leaped for joy.

  127. Even the unborn John, it's interpreted,

  128. was filled with joy.

  129. The kicking in his mother's womb

  130. was a kick of delight

  131. because God's eternal king,

  132. the rescuing Messiah,

  133. was about to be born into this world.

  134. And all of this leads up to Mary's song,

  135. the Magnificat.

  136. It's a song that is bursting with joy.

  137. Let's look at verse 46.

  138. So Mary said,

  139. My soul glorifies,

  140. or my soul magnifies the Lord,

  141. and my spirit rejoices

  142. in God my Saviour.

  143. So Luke introduces us

  144. to this great theme of joy,

  145. and in particular,

  146. this joy with the coming of Christ.

  147. Now I think if we can get to the heart

  148. of this joy,

  149. we can,

  150. whatever we experience in life,

  151. not only enjoy Christmas,

  152. but enjoy every day of the year.

  153. And that doesn't mean to say

  154. we'll all be jumping up and down

  155. and waving banners

  156. and all happy, happy,

  157. but a deep inner joy,

  158. even in times of hurt and struggle,

  159. that sustains us and keeps us.

  160. That is the joy that is on offer.

  161. So we're going to look at this song together,

  162. Mary's song,

  163. and three things we're going to take from it.

  164. The first is this,

  165. the reason for joy.

  166. The reason for joy.

  167. Mary's joy is found,

  168. look at verse 47,

  169. my spirit rejoices

  170. in God my Saviour.

  171. So joy is not found in things,

  172. it's not found in the amount of presents we get,

  173. it's not found in people,

  174. our spouse or our relationships,

  175. it's not found in good fortune or success

  176. or how healthy I feel,

  177. no.

  178. It's all found,

  179. look at those words,

  180. in God my Saviour.

  181. And Mary's song is telling us

  182. that this Saviour,

  183. the salvation that God has to bring to us,

  184. is not something that we have to achieve.

  185. It's not something we have to do

  186. to be able to get.

  187. It's all something that has been done for you.

  188. Look at verse 49.

  189. She says,

  190. for the Mighty One,

  191. this is the Saviour,

  192. the Mighty One has done great things for me.

  193. Look how the rest of the song goes.

  194. Verse 51.

  195. He,

  196. this is the Mighty One,

  197. He has performed mighty deeds with His arm.

  198. Verse 52,

  199. He has brought down rulers.

  200. Verse 53,

  201. He has filled the hungry.

  202. 54,

  203. He has helped.

  204. It's all about what God has done for you.

  205. He has achieved something for us.

  206. And that's why Mary is filled with joy,

  207. because it's not up to her,

  208. it's all what God has done for her.

  209. And we can have this same joy.

  210. And if we can grasp the joy that's on offer,

  211. it will change our lives forever.

  212. Look at verse 48.

  213. He has been mindful of the humble state of His servants.

  214. From now on,

  215. here's the change,

  216. from now on,

  217. all generations will call me blessed.

  218. Mary will be considered blessed by people,

  219. not because she's special,

  220. not because she's given birth to God's Son,

  221. but because she has received God's salvation.

  222. The focus of her joy,

  223. verse 47,

  224. is in God my Saviour.

  225. And because of that,

  226. from now on,

  227. her life is never going to be the same again.

  228. Not because she has to get up and feed the child at night,

  229. but because God has intervened into her life with salvation.

  230. From now on,

  231. all generations will call me blessed,

  232. because I've received salvation.

  233. her life has been changed and transformed.

  234. It's nothing less than a new beginning.

  235. And what happened to Mary

  236. can also happen to us.

  237. We too can have this,

  238. from now on,

  239. joy in our lives.

  240. Let me give you an example of this

  241. that comes a little bit later in Luke.

  242. Luke chapter 5,

    Luke 5:8

  243. verse 8.

  244. As we think about how we can have this

  245. from now on experience.

  246. Luke chapter 5 and verse 8.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  247. This is about 30 years later.

  248. Jesus, as an older man,

  249. has just begun his ministry.

  250. The men who would become his disciples

  251. are out fishing on the boat.

  252. They haven't caught anything.

  253. And he says to them,

  254. you know,

  255. put your nets over

  256. and they catch a whole load of fish.

  257. And then there's this encounter

  258. with Simon Peter

  259. and Jesus,

  260. verse 8.

  261. When Simon Peter saw this,

  262. he fell at Jesus' knees

  263. and said,

  264. go away from me, Lord.

  265. I am a sinful man.

  266. He observes there's this kind of distance.

  267. How can I relate to this person?

  268. Verse 9.

  269. For he and all his companions

  270. were astonished at the catch of fish

  271. they had taken.

  272. And so were James and John

  273. and the sons of Zebedee,

  274. Simon's partners.

  275. Then Jesus said to Simon,

  276. don't be afraid.

  277. From now on,

  278. you will catch men.

  279. You see,

  280. this encounter

  281. with God's Saviour,

  282. Jesus Christ,

  283. has changed their life

  284. at a juncture,

  285. at a point in time

  286. where he will say,

  287. from now on,

  288. your life is going to be different.

  289. You're going to catch men.

  290. You're going to bring people

  291. to God.

  292. And this is the same thing

  293. that is happening

  294. in Mary's life.

  295. If God intervenes

  296. and brings salvation,

  297. from now on,

  298. everything will be different

  299. because of the salvation,

  300. the joy

  301. that God has brought

  302. into your life.

  303. So the reason for joy,

  304. first of all,

  305. is found

  306. in God,

  307. my Saviour,

  308. who changes

  309. our life.

  310. the joy

  311. is the joy

  312. that Mary has.

  313. The experience

  314. of joy.

  315. Because the joy

  316. that Mary has

  317. is something

  318. for us to experience

  319. every single day.

  320. It's not just

  321. a kind of once off

  322. and that's it.

  323. This is to be

  324. experienced

  325. every day.

  326. Look at verse 50.

  327. His mercy

  328. extends to those

  329. who fear Him

  330. from generation

  331. to generation.

  332. The word mercy

  333. means this.

  334. God's unconditional

  335. grace

  336. and compassion.

  337. That's what mercy

  338. here means.

  339. God's unconditional

  340. grace and compassion.

  341. We see it again

  342. in verse 54.

  343. He has helped

  344. His servant Israel

  345. remembering

  346. to be merciful.

  347. This is the character

  348. of God.

  349. That He continues

  350. to pour out

  351. His grace.

  352. He continues

  353. to remember

  354. to pour out

  355. His grace

  356. and His compassion

  357. upon His people.

  358. It overflows

  359. to His people.

  360. That's why Mary

  361. is filled with joy

  362. because she's come

  363. to experience

  364. God's grace

  365. and compassion

  366. in her life.

  367. But what does

  368. this grace,

  369. this mercy

  370. look like

  371. in our life?

  372. Well, there's two things.

  373. First, the humble

  374. are lifted.

  375. In verse 52,

  376. the humble

  377. are lifted.

  378. He has brought

  379. down rulers

  380. from their thrones

  381. but has lifted

  382. up the humble.

  383. Now, generally

  384. speaking,

  385. we think of those

  386. who are in

  387. positions of

  388. power and influence.

  389. They get what

  390. they want

  391. when they want

  392. because they know

  393. the right people

  394. and they have

  395. the right resources.

  396. They just need

  397. to click their fingers

  398. or say this

  399. and they get

  400. what they want

  401. because of their

  402. position.

  403. Whereas those

  404. who fail

  405. and fall,

  406. they always

  407. lose out

  408. and they get

  409. overlooked.

  410. They're disregarded

  411. and they're

  412. rejected.

  413. But God

  414. completely

  415. reverses

  416. this way

  417. of thinking.

  418. God has

  419. a different

  420. way of

  421. working

  422. in our lives.

  423. Look what it

  424. says in verse 52.

  425. He brings

  426. down the rulers

  427. from their

  428. thrones

  429. but he

  430. lifts up

  431. the humble.

  432. God

  433. takes people

  434. of a low

  435. position,

  436. meaning those

  437. who are

  438. spiritually weak

  439. and vulnerable

  440. and he lifts

  441. them up.

  442. He forgives

  443. them.

  444. He welcomes

  445. them.

  446. And through

  447. his salvation

  448. we become

  449. children of

  450. the true

  451. king and

  452. become part

  453. of his

  454. eternal

  455. kingdom.

  456. The low

  457. are the

  458. ones who

  459. are raised

  460. to become

  461. great in

  462. the eyes

  463. of God.

  464. And they

  465. are the

  466. ones as we

  467. read through

  468. the Bible

  469. story are

  470. given thrones

  471. on which to

  472. rule from

  473. in the new

  474. heavens and

  475. the new

  476. earth.

  477. So God

  478. pours his

  479. grace and

  480. his mercy

  481. into people's

  482. lives to

  483. bring them

  484. up, to

  485. elevate them

  486. to becoming

  487. children of

  488. the true

  489. king.

  490. But not

  491. only are the

  492. humble lifted,

  493. second, the

  494. hungry are

  495. filled.

  496. Verse 53.

  497. He has

  498. filled the

  499. hungry with

  500. good things

  501. but has

  502. sent the

  503. rich away

  504. empty.

  505. Again, we

  506. think of those

  507. who are rich

  508. that they

  509. have

  510. everything

  511. that they

  512. want.

  513. Money isn't

  514. an object.

  515. They can

  516. go and

  517. buy their

  518. Apple iPod

  519. and Apple

  520. this and

  521. everything else.

  522. They can

  523. get everything

  524. they want.

  525. But those

  526. who are

  527. poor, well

  528. they stay

  529. poor, they

  530. get nothing.

  531. They're

  532. ignored, they're

  533. isolated.

  534. But God

  535. again, he

  536. reverses this

  537. way of thinking.

  538. God turns it

  539. all on its

  540. head.

  541. Verse 53,

  542. he fills the

  543. hungry, he

  544. fills them with

  545. good things but

  546. the rich are

  547. sent away

  548. empty.

  549. What does

  550. all that

  551. mean?

  552. Well, it

  553. means those

  554. who are

  555. hungry in

  556. the sense

  557. that not

  558. so much the

  559. material wealth

  560. we're thinking

  561. here, but

  562. those who see

  563. their spiritual

  564. emptiness.

  565. And he

  566. fills them.

  567. He satisfies

  568. them with

  569. good things.

  570. He brings

  571. forgiveness into

  572. their lives.

  573. He fills

  574. their life with

  575. peace.

  576. He pours

  577. into their

  578. life his

  579. grace and

  580. his compassion.

  581. He fills

  582. their lives

  583. with joy.

  584. Because in

  585. God our

  586. Saviour, we

  587. have everything

  588. that we need.

  589. The perfect

  590. gift.

  591. It's never

  592. going to

  593. disappoint.

  594. We're never

  595. going to

  596. lack anything.

  597. Everything

  598. that we need

  599. is found

  600. in God our

  601. Saviour.

  602. God's

  603. God's

  604. God's

  605. God's

  606. very own

  607. child.

  608. He fills

  609. the hungry

  610. with good

  611. things.

  612. And this

  613. is a

  614. picture of

  615. the God

  616. who extends

  617. his mercy

  618. to us on

  619. a day-to-day

  620. basis.

  621. He pours in

  622. his grace and

  623. compassion.

  624. He reverses

  625. our status and

  626. our position

  627. in life.

  628. He fills

  629. us and

  630. he satisfies

  631. us.

  632. But before

  633. we move

  634. on, we

  635. also need

  636. to see that

  637. this salvation

  638. is what I

  639. call holistic.

  640. And by

  641. that I mean

  642. God is

  643. concerned for

  644. the whole

  645. person.

  646. Not just

  647. the spiritual.

  648. He's

  649. concerned for

  650. the whole

  651. person and

  652. the whole

  653. world.

  654. So God

  655. is concerned

  656. yes to

  657. reconcile

  658. broken

  659. spiritual

  660. lives.

  661. But he's

  662. come to

  663. reconcile a

  664. disordered

  665. physical world.

  666. This is

  667. part of

  668. Mary's

  669. celebration

  670. in her

  671. song.

  672. Yes, God

  673. has come to

  674. deal with

  675. sins.

  676. He's also

  677. come to

  678. establish

  679. justice.

  680. This is

  681. Mary's

  682. joy and

  683. this can

  684. be our

  685. joy because

  686. the salvation

  687. of God

  688. is so

  689. extensive.

  690. It's about

  691. the restoration

  692. of all

  693. things.

  694. It's about

  695. the ruthless

  696. rulers who

  697. care little

  698. for the

  699. justice and

  700. the peace of

  701. other people

  702. being pulled

  703. down.

  704. It's about

  705. the wealthy

  706. rich who

  707. care little

  708. for the

  709. poor and

  710. the hungry

  711. being sent

  712. away empty.

  713. Because God

  714. in his

  715. salvation

  716. reverses all

  717. of that

  718. disorder and

  719. he renews

  720. what is

  721. broken.

  722. He fixes

  723. it all so

  724. the world

  725. is put right

  726. again.

  727. And one

  728. day we

  729. are going

  730. to see

  731. that in

  732. all its

  733. fullness.

  734. And this

  735. is what

  736. Mary is

  737. celebrating

  738. that one

  739. day God

  740. is going

  741. to put

  742. everything

  743. right.

  744. And there

  745. will not

  746. be a

  747. hungry

  748. belly

  749. left.

  750. And there

  751. will not

  752. be a

  753. rich

  754. person

  755. who

  756. discounts

  757. the

  758. poor

  759. or acts

  760. with

  761. injustice.

  762. God

  763. will do

  764. it.

  765. verse 54

  766. he has

  767. helped

  768. his

  769. servant

  770. Israel

  771. remembering

  772. to be

  773. merciful

  774. to

  775. Abraham

  776. and

  777. his

  778. descendants

  779. forever.

  780. Even as

  781. he said

  782. to our

  783. forefathers

  784. he's done

  785. this before

  786. and he

  787. will continue

  788. to do

  789. it.

  790. So the

  791. experience

  792. of joy

  793. comes as

  794. we know

  795. God's grace

  796. and compassion

  797. being poured

  798. into our

  799. lives.

  800. and the

  801. realisation

  802. that he

  803. is going

  804. to change

  805. this world

  806. into something

  807. glorious

  808. and beautiful.

  809. So we've

  810. got the

  811. reason for

  812. joy,

  813. the

  814. experience

  815. of joy

  816. and then

  817. the third

  818. one is

  819. simply this,

  820. the path

  821. to joy.

  822. And it's

  823. great talking

  824. about Mary's

  825. experience

  826. and the

  827. joy that

  828. she has

  829. joy.

  830. But let's

  831. just focus

  832. this a

  833. minute more

  834. personally to

  835. ourselves.

  836. How do

  837. we get

  838. this same

  839. joy into

  840. our own

  841. lives?

  842. How do

  843. we make

  844. it part of

  845. my day-to-day

  846. experience?

  847. Because

  848. sometimes Mary

  849. is portrayed

  850. as somebody

  851. who is above

  852. human,

  853. almost

  854. God-like

  855. status.

  856. Well,

  857. Mary was

  858. special.

  859. She was

  860. chosen by

  861. God to

  862. bring her

  863. son,

  864. bring God's

  865. son into

  866. the world,

  867. but Mary

  868. was just

  869. like you

  870. and me.

  871. And what

  872. Mary

  873. experienced

  874. can also

  875. be our

  876. experience.

  877. Let me

  878. show us

  879. how we

  880. can get

  881. this joy

  882. into our

  883. lives on

  884. a day-to-day

  885. basis.

  886. Look at

  887. verse 48.

  888. It's

  889. saying,

  890. God has

  891. been mindful

  892. of the

  893. humble

  894. state

  895. of his

  896. servant.

  897. Or look

  898. at verse

  899. 52.

  900. He has

  901. brought

  902. down

  903. rulers

  904. from their

  905. thrones,

  906. but has

  907. lifted up

  908. the

  909. humble.

  910. You see,

  911. the path

  912. to joy

  913. is humility.

  914. It's

  915. only those

  916. who recognize

  917. their low

  918. position.

  919. It's

  920. only those

  921. who can

  922. see within

  923. themselves

  924. that they

  925. are empty,

  926. that they

  927. can be

  928. filled

  929. with joy.

  930. And Mary

  931. was that

  932. kind of

  933. person.

  934. And so

  935. in this

  936. sense,

  937. she's a

  938. model

  939. example

  940. of how

  941. we

  942. receive

  943. joy.

  944. Now,

  945. let's face

  946. it,

  947. humility

  948. is not

  949. something

  950. any of

  951. us are

  952. very good

  953. at.

  954. We want

  955. to be

  956. seen as

  957. self-sufficient,

  958. self-dependent.

  959. the world

  960. teaches us

  961. to manage

  962. all by

  963. ourselves.

  964. We don't

  965. need anyone

  966. and we

  967. don't need

  968. anything.

  969. In fact,

  970. if anything's

  971. broken,

  972. I can

  973. fix it.

  974. And if

  975. we are to

  976. admit that

  977. we need

  978. help or

  979. support,

  980. well,

  981. that's just

  982. a sign of

  983. weakness

  984. and frailty.

  985. But that's

  986. not how we

  987. come to

  988. God.

  989. That's not

  990. how we

  991. find joy.

  992. In fact,

  993. pride has

  994. the opposite

  995. effect.

  996. Look at

  997. verse 51.

  998. He has

  999. performed

  1000. mighty deeds

  1001. with his

  1002. arm,

  1003. but he

  1004. has scattered

  1005. those who

  1006. are proud

  1007. in their

  1008. inmost

  1009. thoughts.

  1010. Rather than

  1011. being welcomed

  1012. in and

  1013. filled and

  1014. satisfied,

  1015. the proud

  1016. instead are

  1017. scattered.

  1018. They are

  1019. brought down

  1020. low and

  1021. they are

  1022. left empty.

  1023. The true

  1024. sign of

  1025. humility

  1026. is to

  1027. say that

  1028. we have

  1029. nothing to

  1030. bring to

  1031. God.

  1032. We have

  1033. nothing to

  1034. offer to

  1035. God.

  1036. In fact,

  1037. all we can

  1038. bring to

  1039. God is

  1040. our

  1041. emptiness

  1042. and our

  1043. weakness.

  1044. That's the

  1045. only way we

  1046. can come to

  1047. God.

  1048. And when we

  1049. come in

  1050. humility,

  1051. God will

  1052. fill us

  1053. with his

  1054. joy.

  1055. God will

  1056. be

  1057. to

  1058. God will

  1059. be.

  1060. When we were

  1061. little,

  1062. we had a

  1063. very simple

  1064. television.

  1065. It was

  1066. black and

  1067. white,

  1068. RTE1 and

  1069. RTE2.

  1070. That was it.

  1071. And every

  1072. Christmas we

  1073. would watch the

  1074. same things.

  1075. It was

  1076. Willy Wonka's

  1077. Chocolate Factory

  1078. and maybe in the

  1079. afternoon,

  1080. Oliver Twist.

  1081. Twist.

  1082. And we

  1083. would watch

  1084. Oliver Twist

  1085. all the time.

  1086. And we

  1087. come to that

  1088. point, you

  1089. know the

  1090. story, little

  1091. Oliver, the

  1092. homeless orphan

  1093. in that

  1094. boarding school.

  1095. And there he

  1096. comes where

  1097. they get their

  1098. slop of porridge

  1099. or whatever it

  1100. is into the

  1101. bowl and they

  1102. all have their

  1103. fill.

  1104. Well, not

  1105. really because

  1106. they're still

  1107. hungry.

  1108. And Oliver

  1109. goes forward,

  1110. doesn't he, with

  1111. his empty bowl

  1112. and everybody

  1113. stops their

  1114. silence as he

  1115. makes his way

  1116. up to the

  1117. front to the

  1118. boarding master

  1119. and he holds

  1120. out his bowl

  1121. before him and

  1122. he goes,

  1123. please sir,

  1124. can I have

  1125. some more?

  1126. And then the

  1127. great big bellow,

  1128. more!

  1129. And then the

  1130. riot takes place

  1131. as they go

  1132. chasing after

  1133. Oliver, running

  1134. through the

  1135. legs of all the

  1136. kids and under

  1137. the tables.

  1138. But I want you

  1139. to take that

  1140. image and that

  1141. picture of

  1142. Oliver.

  1143. That's how

  1144. we're to

  1145. come before

  1146. God.

  1147. To come with

  1148. empty hands,

  1149. to come before

  1150. him,

  1151. please sir,

  1152. fill my

  1153. life,

  1154. fill my

  1155. life.

  1156. And the

  1157. difference here

  1158. though is not

  1159. that we get a

  1160. bellowing roar

  1161. more and being

  1162. chased out and

  1163. kicked out, but

  1164. we come before

  1165. a gracious,

  1166. compassionate,

  1167. merciful and

  1168. loving father

  1169. who will fill

  1170. our lives with

  1171. joy.

  1172. Fill our lives

  1173. with joy because

  1174. in God we find

  1175. our saviour.

  1176. We come with

  1177. our emptiness,

  1178. we come with

  1179. our poverty,

  1180. and he fills

  1181. us like

  1182. nothing before

  1183. till our lives

  1184. are overflowing

  1185. with joy.

  1186. A joy that we

  1187. can bring to

  1188. the world in

  1189. which we live.

  1190. So as we

  1191. think about

  1192. Christmas,

  1193. think about

  1194. the joy

  1195. that is found

  1196. only in

  1197. God our

  1198. saviour.

  1199. How we can

  1200. experience it

  1201. and how we

  1202. receive it

  1203. every day.

  1204. Come in

  1205. humility

  1206. with your

  1207. open hands

  1208. asking God

  1209. to fill

  1210. your life.

  1211. Let's pray.

  1212. Our

  1213. Father God,

  1214. we thank you

  1215. so much.

  1216. that in

  1217. you there

  1218. is everything

  1219. that we

  1220. need.

  1221. That you

  1222. fill us

  1223. and you

  1224. satisfy us

  1225. like none

  1226. other.

  1227. And without

  1228. Christ in

  1229. our lives

  1230. day to

  1231. day,

  1232. we will

  1233. always be

  1234. in want.

  1235. But we

  1236. thank you

  1237. that when we

  1238. humbly come

  1239. before you,

  1240. you fill us

  1241. with your

  1242. joy.

  1243. You give

  1244. us the joy

  1245. of salvation,

  1246. the joy

  1247. of your

  1248. grace and

  1249. compassion

  1250. every day,

  1251. the blessing

  1252. of a future,

  1253. of a world

  1254. that will be

  1255. put right.

  1256. Help us

  1257. as we come

  1258. before you

  1259. right now.

  1260. We hold

  1261. out our

  1262. hands,

  1263. our lives

  1264. before you,

  1265. humbly admit

  1266. our emptiness

  1267. and our

  1268. weakness

  1269. and pray

  1270. that you

  1271. would fill

  1272. us like

  1273. only you

  1274. can.

  1275. We ask

  1276. this in

  1277. Jesus'

  1278. name.

  1279. Amen.

  1280. Well,

  1281. we're going

  1282. to sing

  1283. angels from

  1284. the realms

  1285. of glory.

  1286. Come and

  1287. worship,

  1288. worship

  1289. Christ.

  1290. Amen.

  1291. Amen.

  1292. Amen.

  1293. Amen.

  1294. Amen.

  1295. Amen.

  1296. Amen.

  1297. Amen.

  1298. Amen.

  1299. Amen.

  1300. Amen.

  1301. Amen.

  1302. Amen.

  1303. Amen.

  1304. Amen.

  1305. Amen.

  1306. Amen.

  1307. Amen.
