  1. Even a 24-hour day, never mind a year, can make a huge difference to the course of our lives.

  2. Especially if your name is Jack Bauer and you've got 24 hours to save the world.

  3. But for Jack Bauer, it's the most 24-hour traumatic day of his life.

  4. For everyone watching, it's just wasted 24 hours.

  5. But either way, 24 hours makes a difference.

  6. And a year in our lives makes a huge difference.

  7. And so at the end of it, as it comes, you know, closer to the end of the year,

  8. and as it comes to 11 p.m. on the 31st of December,

  9. we get very conscious of time passing by.

  10. The world around us is changing.

  11. People around us have changed.

  12. And as we reflect, we feel the need to change ourselves as well.

  13. The change is troubling.

  14. And sometimes we want to change just to keep up with the pace of everything else.

  15. Everything from changing our clues to changing our minds.

  16. Most of the time, in truth, the changes that we make,

  17. and the New Year's resolutions,

  18. rather being a desire for something really new,

  19. are an attempt to control or to limit the change that's already happening too fast in our lives.

  20. We make resolutions, for example, to change diet and exercise,

  21. because we look in the mirror or we go for a walk and we don't like how our body is changing.

  22. Many other changes we make to save more, to spend more time with children.

  23. Whatever the change might be,

  24. chances are that we're doing it because we're afraid of what else might change if we don't.

  25. We don't like change.

  26. That's why whenever people look at a child,

  27. if they haven't seen them for a while,

  28. they say,

  29. Wow, you've really grown.

  30. Because I think deep down in our hearts,

  31. we kind of expect everything to just stay the same.

  32. We almost get shocked when a child grows,

  33. whereas it would be terrible if a child remained two feet tall all their life, wouldn't it?

  34. But we don't really like it when things change.

  35. But it's nearly 2013,

  36. and everything, everything except God,

  37. has changed and is changing.

  38. And being a believer is being certain of what we're changing into.

  39. So that as we see all the change in the world around us,

  40. we don't get overcome with fear and troubled in our minds,

  41. but instead we well up with hope.

  42. Why?

  43. Well, turn with me please to Romans 8.

  44. We'll read it through together.

  45. Excuse me when I cough.

  46. So Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  47. I'll just read through the whole chapter,

  48. and we're going to look through it briefly.

  49. We're not going to focus on anything in too much detail.

  50. But the flow of the chapter kind of lends itself to looking at it all at once.

  51. So we'll read the whole chapter.

  52. Therefore,

  53. there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

  54. because through Christ Jesus,

  55. the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

  56. For what the law was powerless to do,

  57. because it was weakened by the flesh?

  58. God did,

  59. by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.

  60. And so he condemns sin in the flesh,

  61. in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us,

  62. who do not live according to the flesh,

  63. but according to the Spirit.

  64. Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires,

  65. but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

  66. The mind governed by the flesh is death,

  67. but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

  68. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God.

  69. It does not submit to God's law,

  70. nor can it do so.

  71. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

  72. You, however,

  73. are not in the realm of the flesh,

  74. but in the realm of the Spirit,

  75. if indeed the Spirit,

  76. thank you again,

  77. if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.

  78. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,

  79. they do not belong to Christ.

  80. But if Christ is in you,

  81. then even though your body is subject to death because of sin,

  82. the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.

  83. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you,

  84. he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies

  85. because of his Spirit who lives in you.

  86. Therefore, brothers and sisters,

  87. we have an obligation,

  88. but it is not to the flesh to live according to it.

  89. For if you live according to the flesh,

  90. you will die.

  91. But if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body,

  92. you will live.

  93. For those who are led by the Spirit of God

  94. or the children of God,

  95. the Spirit you receive does not make you slaves

  96. so that you live in fear again.

  97. Rather, the Spirit you received

  98. brought about your adoption to sonship,

  99. and by him we cry,

  100. Abba, Father.

  101. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit

  102. that we are God's children.

  103. Now if we are children,

  104. then we are heirs,

  105. heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ,

  106. if indeed we share in his sufferings

  107. in order that we may share in his glory.

  108. I consider that our present sufferings

  109. are not worth comparing with the glory

  110. that will be revealed in us.

  111. For the creation waits in eager expectation

  112. for the children of God to be revealed.

  113. For the creation was subjected to frustration,

  114. not by its own choice,

  115. but by the will of the one who subjected it,

  116. in hope that the creation itself

  117. will be liberated from its bondage to decay

  118. and brought into the freedom and glory

  119. of the children of God.

  120. We know that the whole creation

  121. has been groaning

  122. as in the pains of childbirth

  123. right up to this present time.

  124. Not only so,

  125. but we ourselves,

  126. who have the first fruits of the Spirit

  127. grown inwardly

  128. as we wait eagerly

  129. for our adoption to sonship,

  130. the redemption of our bodies.

  131. For in this hope,

  132. we are saved.

  133. But hope that is seen

  134. is no hope at all.

  135. Who hopes for what they already have?

  136. But if we hope for what we do not yet have,

  137. we wait for it patiently.

  138. In the same way,

  139. the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

  140. We do not know what we ought to pray for,

  141. but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us

  142. through wordless groans.

  143. And He who searches our hearts

  144. knows the mind of the Spirit,

  145. because the Spirit intercedes for God's people

  146. in accordance with the will of God.

  147. And we know that in all things,

  148. God works for the good of those who love Him,

  149. who have been called according to His purpose.

  150. For those God foreknew,

  151. He also predestined

  152. to be conformed to the image of His Son,

  153. that He might be the firstborn

  154. among many brothers and sisters.

  155. And those He predestined,

  156. He also called.

  157. Those He called,

  158. He also justified.

  159. Those He justified,

  160. He also glorified.

  161. What then shall we say

  162. in response to these things?

  163. If God is for us,

  164. who can be against us?

  165. He who did not spare His own Son,

  166. but gave Him up for us all,

  167. how will He not also,

  168. along with Him,

  169. graciously give us all things?

  170. Who will bring any charge

  171. against those whom God has chosen?

  172. It is God who justifies.

  173. Who then is the one who condemns?

  174. No one.

  175. Christ Jesus who died,

  176. more than that,

  177. who is raised to life,

  178. is at the right hand of God

  179. and is interceding for us.

  180. Who shall separate us

  181. from the love of Christ?

  182. Shall trouble,

  183. or hardship,

  184. or persecution,

  185. or famine,

  186. or nakedness,

  187. or danger,

  188. or sword?

  189. As it is written,

  190. for your sake,

  191. we face death all day long.

  192. We are considered

  193. as sheep to be slaughtered.

  194. No.

  195. In all these things,

  196. we are more than conquerors

  197. through Him who loved us.

  198. For I am convinced

  199. that neither death nor life,

  200. neither angels nor demons,

  201. neither the present nor the future,

  202. nor any powers,

  203. neither height nor depth,

  204. nor anything else

  205. in all creation,

  206. will be able to separate us

  207. from the love of God

  208. that is in Christ Jesus,

  209. our Lord.

  210. So we'll just pray briefly

  211. before we look at the passage.

  212. Father, we thank You for Your Word.

  213. And we thank You, Lord,

  214. that we have it in our own language,

  215. that we can freely read it

  216. and think about it

  217. and hear it talked about.

  218. And Father, we pray

  219. that as we look at it now

  220. that You would help us

  221. to understand it

  222. and apply it to our hearts and lives

  223. and be changed as a result

  224. to be more like Jesus.

  225. And in His name we pray.

  226. Amen.

  227. Well, Romans 5

  228. till the end of chapter 8,

  229. I suppose the biggest theme

  230. is probably the theme of hope.

  231. Hope comes through faith.

  232. And chapter 8,

  233. particularly towards the end,

  234. is all about the future hope.

  235. But before we get to that,

  236. Paul talks about

  237. two different types of people.

  238. And the reason why he does

  239. is because only one group

  240. has a future.

  241. Only one has a hope.

  242. So verses 1 to 17,

  243. briefly then,

  244. the people of the Spirit

  245. and the people of the flesh.

  246. Now, he starts with those

  247. who are in Christ,

  248. identified with Christ.

  249. They have the Holy Spirit

  250. that was living in Christ,

  251. now living in them.

  252. Now, previously in chapter 7,

  253. he had been talking about the law,

  254. the moral law,

  255. the Old Testament law,

  256. the simple knowledge

  257. of right and wrong,

  258. and how really,

  259. even though it's good in itself,

  260. it condemns us as human beings

  261. because we fail to keep it.

  262. So here in verse 3,

  263. if you look at verse 3,

  264. when he writes about

  265. the law being powerless

  266. because it was weakened by the flesh,

  267. he is saying that,

  268. right and good,

  269. though the law may be,

  270. it won't save us

  271. from our sinful, selfish self

  272. because the more law we know,

  273. the more we just end up breaking.

  274. So really,

  275. even though the law,

  276. like the law in society,

  277. may have a restraining effect on us,

  278. because of the way we are

  279. as human beings,

  280. because of our sinful selves,

  281. always inclined to look out

  282. for number one,

  283. then it might help us

  284. clean up a little,

  285. but it will never really change

  286. who we are deep down.

  287. And that's because

  288. we've got a serious problem.

  289. Now Paul describes it here

  290. as the flesh.

  291. Now he's not literally,

  292. of course,

  293. talking about our skin

  294. or our shells

  295. or our physical bodies,

  296. but really more

  297. the fallen part of our humanity,

  298. our worldly desires

  299. and our materialism

  300. and our worship of self.

  301. And instead of, I suppose,

  302. using the word material,

  303. like the material uses

  304. versus the spiritual,

  305. he uses flesh.

  306. Because the image is more like

  307. something to do with

  308. our own humanness.

  309. Even, if you will,

  310. if you kind of stretch it

  311. about our human meat.

  312. Meat, it's not,

  313. a flesh is not an appealing term.

  314. If you think of flesh,

  315. flesh of an animal

  316. or a flesh of a human,

  317. it might be something

  318. that looks nice

  319. and appealing one day,

  320. but a few days down the line

  321. it's all rotten.

  322. It's not really

  323. that glamorous an image.

  324. Now if we think about

  325. the context of Romans,

  326. it'll maybe make it

  327. a little bit clearer.

  328. In AD 49,

  329. Claudius,

  330. he expelled all the Jews

  331. from Rome.

  332. And the reason was

  333. because there was

  334. continual rioting

  335. between the Jewish Orthodox,

  336. the Jewish believers,

  337. or the Jewish Jews,

  338. and the Jewish Christians.

  339. So the Jews,

  340. whether they were Christians

  341. or whether they were

  342. traditional Jews,

  343. they were all expelled

  344. from Rome.

  345. And Aquila and Priscilla,

  346. I suppose,

  347. in Acts 18.2

  348. are examples of this.

  349. It talks about it

  350. in Acts 18.2.

  351. But five years later,

  352. whenever Nero came to power

  353. in AD 54,

  354. the expulsion was revoked

  355. and all the Jews,

  356. including the Jewish believers,

  357. were allowed back to Rome.

  358. So now,

  359. as Paul writes

  360. in AD 57,

  361. he's writing to a church

  362. that was predominantly

  363. Gentile believers

  364. for five years

  365. and then the Jews

  366. come back,

  367. Jewish believers,

  368. and they're struggling

  369. to understand the whole thing

  370. about the Jewish heritage

  371. and the gospel.

  372. And that's what Paul

  373. writes to.

  374. Now,

  375. for the Jew,

  376. the word flesh

  377. goes right back

  378. to creation.

  379. When Adam looked at Eve

  380. and he says,

  381. bone of my bone

  382. and flesh of my flesh,

  383. it's really the meat

  384. of human existence.

  385. God says later,

  386. at the time of Noah,

  387. that all flesh

  388. had become corrupted

  389. and we have other references

  390. to flesh

  391. and the flesh of man.

  392. So,

  393. for the Jewish,

  394. for the Jews,

  395. the Jewish understanding

  396. is that for man

  397. to be flesh

  398. means that man is mortal.

  399. He is dying.

  400. And so,

  401. in verse 3,

  402. when Paul writes

  403. that Jesus came

  404. in the likeness

  405. of sinful flesh,

  406. he isn't saying

  407. that Jesus came

  408. in the likeness

  409. of sinful nature.

  410. It doesn't make any sense

  411. to say that Jesus

  412. looked like he had

  413. a sinful nature.

  414. But what is clear

  415. is that Jesus was born

  416. in human flesh.

  417. He was born

  418. just like us

  419. with a decaying

  420. and cursed body

  421. even though

  422. he had no sin.

  423. he was born

  424. in the flesh

  425. just like us sinners.

  426. And the purpose of it,

  427. as he says,

  428. was so that he could

  429. offer his flesh

  430. as a sacrifice

  431. to us,

  432. for us,

  433. to redeem our bodies

  434. through the Spirit.

  435. And so,

  436. the whole consequence

  437. of Paul's argument

  438. is that he's saying

  439. for those in Christ,

  440. there is no condemnation.

  441. Instead,

  442. we have the same

  443. Holy Spirit

  444. that was in Christ

  445. living in us.

  446. so that unlike

  447. before when we

  448. didn't know Christ,

  449. when it was impossible

  450. for us to keep the law,

  451. we can now keep the law

  452. by following Christ

  453. because we follow

  454. the one who kept the law,

  455. who came

  456. in the flesh.

  457. So then in verses 5-8,

  458. we move on,

  459. we have this great distinction

  460. between those who live

  461. according to the flesh

  462. and those who live

  463. according to the Spirit.

  464. Those who live out their lives

  465. always keeping in mind

  466. their own flesh,

  467. their own skin,

  468. their own earthly,

  469. mortal existence,

  470. and those who look beyond that

  471. to the spiritual.

  472. Now everything that goes

  473. with the flesh is decaying.

  474. It's going to die.

  475. It's rotting

  476. because it's under God's curse.

  477. But to live in the Spirit

  478. means peace with God

  479. and life to come.

  480. And we get to verses 9-11

  481. and Paul explains

  482. just how the Spirit

  483. brings life.

  484. He says,

  485. you either have the Spirit

  486. or you don't.

  487. You either belong to Christ

  488. or you don't.

  489. If you have the Spirit,

  490. Paul explains,

  491. that you're not in the realm

  492. of the flesh.

  493. In other words,

  494. your flesh doesn't own you anymore.

  495. It doesn't control you anymore.

  496. Now even though we have

  497. a physical body

  498. with flesh and blood,

  499. he explains in verse 10,

  500. in spite of that,

  501. you will live

  502. because you have the Spirit

  503. dwelling in you

  504. and the Spirit brings life.

  505. Now how or what does he mean?

  506. Is he talking about

  507. spiritual life

  508. and out-of-body life

  509. in another realm?

  510. Well,

  511. we do have

  512. a new spiritual life

  513. in Christ.

  514. But really,

  515. what he is referring to

  516. mostly here

  517. is that we're going to have

  518. a real physical life.

  519. Rather than being

  520. rid of our bodies

  521. in the end,

  522. those bodies

  523. are going to be redeemed.

  524. And this is the whole purpose

  525. of these verses.

  526. The whole point

  527. in these verses

  528. and the whole

  529. what the hope

  530. rests on.

  531. And that's why

  532. Paul says elsewhere

  533. that if it was only

  534. for this life

  535. that we have no hope,

  536. or sorry,

  537. if it was only

  538. for this life

  539. that we have hope

  540. in Christ,

  541. then we of all people

  542. are to be most pitied

  543. because the hope

  544. isn't for this life.

  545. It's all in the next.

  546. It's all in the resurrection.

  547. All eggs in one basket

  548. and that's in the next life.

  549. The hope is in the resurrection.

  550. So verse 12 and following.

  551. Why then?

  552. Would you have anything,

  553. would you want to have

  554. anything to do

  555. with conforming to this word?

  556. Focusing on our attention

  557. and setting our thoughts

  558. and such

  559. fleshly things

  560. in this life

  561. when in the end

  562. they're all just going to

  563. pass away into death.

  564. And if we're gripped

  565. by these things

  566. then they're just going to

  567. drag us down with them.

  568. But Christ,

  569. he says,

  570. saves us from that.

  571. He frees us

  572. from slavery to sin

  573. and saves us

  574. from ourselves,

  575. me, myself and I.

  576. And he gives us

  577. a new identity

  578. as a child of God.

  579. Having the Spirit

  580. of God in us

  581. marks us out now

  582. as belonging to him,

  583. as his children

  584. with privilege.

  585. In the Old Testament

  586. God sat at the top

  587. of Mount Sinai

  588. in unapproachable fire

  589. whenever the Holy Spirit

  590. came at Pentecost.

  591. The very feast

  592. which commemorated

  593. the giving of the law

  594. to Moses

  595. at Pentecost,

  596. that unapproachable fire

  597. came down

  598. and rested

  599. on the disciples' heads.

  600. Because of what

  601. Jesus had done,

  602. the unapproachable

  603. holy, holy, holy God

  604. would now be called

  605. Abba Father.

  606. Basically,

  607. Dada.

  608. The same kind of

  609. word that

  610. a little child

  611. would use

  612. to cry out

  613. to their daddy.

  614. Now if you've put

  615. your trust in Christ,

  616. then this

  617. is

  618. your identity.

  619. The first verses

  620. that we looked at there

  621. in the chapter

  622. are all about

  623. the technical legality

  624. and the theology

  625. that tells us

  626. about the two identities.

  627. There's people of the flesh

  628. and there's people

  629. of the Spirit.

  630. But if you've trusted

  631. in Christ

  632. as your Savior

  633. and your King,

  634. then this is where

  635. you are now.

  636. You're identified

  637. with God

  638. as his Son,

  639. as one who has

  640. the Spirit of God

  641. inside them.

  642. Because of Jesus' death,

  643. you have forgiveness,

  644. you have no condemnation,

  645. freedom from sin,

  646. freedom from self,

  647. to have a new identity

  648. and a new relationship.

  649. One where God

  650. becomes our Father

  651. and our protector

  652. and our provider

  653. and the one that we live

  654. to please

  655. and enjoy.

  656. So like Christ,

  657. if we love him

  658. and know him

  659. and accepted him

  660. as our Savior,

  661. then we are God's sons,

  662. his children.

  663. And like Christ,

  664. we will be raised

  665. from death.

  666. And that's

  667. where the hope lies.

  668. So verses 18 to 30,

  669. secondly then,

  670. let's look a little bit

  671. at the hope

  672. and what that means

  673. for us

  674. in an uncertain world.

  675. Well, verse 18,

  676. well, Paul says

  677. the main consequence

  678. is that when you think

  679. about the hope

  680. for the future

  681. and you think

  682. about today's troubles,

  683. whatever they might be,

  684. they're not even worth

  685. bothering

  686. comparing to

  687. what is coming.

  688. The pure glory

  689. of what's going

  690. to happen to us

  691. as our broken bodies

  692. get fixed

  693. and our troubled minds

  694. are finally

  695. and completely calmed

  696. and every sin

  697. which bothered us

  698. is finally taken away

  699. or removed.

  700. Every pain

  701. and every hurt

  702. is gone.

  703. That will be

  704. the greatest

  705. demonstration

  706. of God's work

  707. in all its glory.

  708. The redemption

  709. of the creation

  710. and particularly us

  711. the redemption

  712. of his prize.

  713. He says it's not worth

  714. comparing

  715. even the greatest

  716. troubles in life

  717. that we might have

  718. and he had plenty.

  719. He says

  720. even

  721. in verses 19 to 22

  722. even the creation

  723. looks on

  724. in anticipation

  725. to see what's

  726. going to happen

  727. to us

  728. as we're fully

  729. transformed

  730. into the children

  731. of God.

  732. The creation

  733. can't wait.

  734. Since the fall

  735. everything in the

  736. entire creation

  737. from stars

  738. to shellfish

  739. has been suffering

  740. because of our sin.

  741. Everything from

  742. massive tsunamis

  743. to hurricanes

  744. to myxomatosis

  745. and little bunny rabbits

  746. can be traced back

  747. to the first

  748. human decision

  749. to rebel

  750. against the creator.

  751. The creation

  752. didn't decide

  753. to sin.

  754. It didn't rebel

  755. against its creator.

  756. Animals didn't decide

  757. to rebel

  758. against their creator.

  759. But Paul reminds us

  760. that God chose

  761. to frustrate

  762. the entire world

  763. and any hope

  764. for humanity.

  765. God frustrated

  766. the creation

  767. so that it might

  768. play its part

  769. in the redemption

  770. of humanity

  771. in the hope

  772. that the creation

  773. itself would one day

  774. be set free

  775. and share in the

  776. freedom and redemption

  777. with the caretakers

  778. that it was originally

  779. created to have.

  780. That's the hope

  781. for the world around us.

  782. Verse 18 to 22

  783. and then 23 to 30

  784. we have the hope

  785. for the child of God.

  786. Now it's not just

  787. the creation

  788. that wants the redemption

  789. to come.

  790. We should too.

  791. We must do

  792. if we have the spirit

  793. of God in us.

  794. Not that we'd want

  795. to give up on life

  796. or want it all

  797. to be over

  798. or wish it all away

  799. but there's something

  800. in us

  801. that just wants it all

  802. to be fixed.

  803. Instead of having

  804. a fearful expectation

  805. of judgment

  806. to come after death

  807. there's a desire

  808. for everything

  809. to be made new

  810. for us to be made new.

  811. And specifically here

  812. of looking forward

  813. to redemption

  814. of our bodies

  815. as we gain

  816. the full benefits

  817. of sonship.

  818. As Christians

  819. a huge amount

  820. of our time

  821. is spent

  822. in demonstrating

  823. God's redemption

  824. to the world now.

  825. Good deeds

  826. transforming society

  827. where we can.

  828. Having a good

  829. or a redemptive influence

  830. on someone else's life.

  831. And most of all

  832. sharing the good news

  833. of Jesus

  834. with others.

  835. I know

  836. even though we can hope

  837. for some kind of redemption

  838. in the world around us

  839. and we should

  840. just as we are

  841. described as first risk

  842. we should also hope

  843. for fruit in the world

  844. but really

  845. ultimately

  846. the real hope

  847. is as just in the last point

  848. isn't for now

  849. but it's all eggs

  850. in one basket

  851. and it's all for the life

  852. to come.

  853. Hope through Christ

  854. beyond the grave.

  855. Verse 24

  856. because it's this hope

  857. that we're saved.

  858. No hope

  859. in results

  860. for the transformation

  861. of the community

  862. or society

  863. or even results

  864. for our church

  865. that is not

  866. what our hope is in.

  867. Our saving hope

  868. cannot even be seen

  869. in this life

  870. he says.

  871. In fact

  872. Paul says

  873. the hope that is seen

  874. is no hope at all.

  875. It's no hope

  876. for something

  877. that we can actually

  878. envisage getting hold of

  879. in this life

  880. or something more

  881. of what we already know.

  882. it's hope for something

  883. that we don't have yet

  884. and we have to

  885. read right up

  886. until the end

  887. patiently he says

  888. until we can claim it.

  889. Until then

  890. the spirit will help us

  891. even in our prayers.

  892. Verse 26

  893. And he's not

  894. talking about tongues

  895. here so much

  896. but he's talking about

  897. like before

  898. some kind of

  899. a holy attitude

  900. of discontent

  901. where we know

  902. that we need to pray

  903. and we know

  904. that there's something

  905. not right in our lives

  906. and we're not content

  907. with the way

  908. the world is around us

  909. and we just want to change

  910. but we don't even know

  911. what to say

  912. or where to start

  913. or how to pray about it.

  914. The Holy Spirit

  915. is interceding for us

  916. and groaning

  917. in our behalf.

  918. That's what Paul's

  919. talking about

  920. because it's all

  921. in the context

  922. of hope

  923. and change.

  924. The spirit is

  925. inside us

  926. and he's changing us

  927. and transforming us

  928. as we look forward

  929. to the day

  930. when everything

  931. is going to be

  932. completely restored.

  933. In all things

  934. we know

  935. that God is working

  936. and will work

  937. for the good

  938. of those who love him.

  939. And it all comes back

  940. to that initial trust

  941. and faith.

  942. If we

  943. have faith

  944. and trust in him

  945. to save us

  946. and guide us

  947. in our lives

  948. then we have

  949. the spirit in us

  950. and we know

  951. that there is

  952. a future for us.

  953. we have been called

  954. according to his purpose.

  955. He knew us

  956. and he loved us

  957. from the beginning

  958. and he gave us

  959. the destiny

  960. of being like Jesus

  961. predestined

  962. according to the

  963. likeness of his son.

  964. That means our destiny

  965. is to be like Jesus.

  966. The day is coming

  967. when we will see

  968. Jesus face to face

  969. along with many others

  970. like ourselves

  971. and he says

  972. it will be glorious.

  973. That's the future

  974. that we hope for.

  975. So finally then

  976. what is the response?

  977. And what should

  978. our response be

  979. for 2013

  980. as we face change

  981. and uncertainty

  982. and trouble

  983. and pain

  984. in the world

  985. around us

  986. and in ourselves?

  987. Verses 31 to 39

  988. the response is

  989. confidence.

  990. God subjected

  991. his entire creation

  992. to futility

  993. and decay.

  994. He sent his son

  995. to rescue us

  996. in our hopeless state.

  997. He set out

  998. a whole plan

  999. of redemption

  1000. for us

  1001. in a new creation.

  1002. Verse 31 then

  1003. if God wants

  1004. good for us

  1005. and loves us

  1006. and went to such

  1007. length

  1008. to redeem us

  1009. if he really has

  1010. this eternal plan

  1011. for our little lives

  1012. then no change

  1013. or trouble

  1014. is ever going

  1015. to upset that.

  1016. If he has already

  1017. sent his son

  1018. to die

  1019. to bring this

  1020. whole plan

  1021. into action

  1022. and bring this

  1023. hope to reality

  1024. then he's not

  1025. going to just decide

  1026. now that he wants

1027. to give up on it all

  1028. and not bring us

  1029. to redemption

  1030. or bring us

  1031. everything that he's

  1032. promised to give us.

  1033. No one can bring

  1034. any charge

  1035. no one can condemn

  1036. Jesus has died

1037. and he has risen again

1038. so that we will die

1039. and we will rise again

  1040. with him.

  1041. So nothing

  1042. he says

  1043. will separate us

  1044. from God's love

  1045. and his plan

  1046. for us.

  1047. No financial difficulty

1048. not even to the point

  1049. of nakedness

  1050. no slagging

  1051. or work at school

  1052. even to the point

  1053. of physical persecution

  1054. no danger

  1055. no threat

  1056. not even death

  1057. itself

  1058. will thwart his plan

  1059. or separate us

  1060. from being loved

  1061. and loving him

  1062. as our father

  1063. forever.

  1064. Paul finishes

  1065. by explaining

  1066. I'll just read out

  1067. the verses

  1068. for I am convinced

  1069. that neither death

  1070. nor life

  1071. neither angels

  1072. nor demons

  1073. neither the present

  1074. nor the future

  1075. nor any powers

  1076. neither height

  1077. nor depth

  1078. nor anything else

  1079. in all creation

  1080. will be able

  1081. to separate us

1082. from the love of God

1083. that is in Christ Jesus

  1084. our Lord.

  1085. So

1086. when you look in the mirror

  1087. on Monday night

  1088. or consider your finances

1089. or worry about the future

  1090. or your children's future

1091. or just feel some fear

1092. of what might lie ahead

  1093. remember

  1094. the hope

  1095. of the redemption

  1096. and the hope

  1097. of the resurrection

  1098. that one day

  1099. it's all coming

  1100. the world is changing

  1101. our bodies are changing

1102. but no matter what happens

  1103. if the Holy Spirit

  1104. lives in you

  1105. through faith in Christ

  1106. then nothing

  1107. will change the plan

1108. that God has for you

  1109. and nothing

  1110. will stop the changes

1111. that God has set in motion

  1112. for his creation

1113. the creation will be changed

  1114. we will be changed

1115. and we can be sure

  1116. that our hope

  1117. will not be disappointed

  1118. Amen

  1119. Thanks so much
