  1. In verse 1, Moses summoned all Israel and said,

  2. Hear, O Israel, the decrees and the laws I declare in your hearing today.

  3. Learn them and be sure to follow them.

  4. The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.

  5. It was not with our fathers that the Lord made this covenant,

  6. but with us, with all of us who are alive here today.

  7. The Lord spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain.

  8. And at that time I stood between the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord,

  9. because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up to the mountain.

  10. And he said, I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

  11. You shall have no gods before me.

  12. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above

  13. or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

  14. You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.

  15. Punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

  16. but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

  17. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God,

  18. for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

  19. Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy as the Lord your God has commanded you.

  20. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  21. On it you shall not do any work, neither you nor your son or daughter,

  22. nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals,

  23. nor the alien within your gates,

  24. so that your manservant and maidservant may rest as you do.

  25. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there

  26. with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.

  27. Therefore, the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath.

  28. Honor your father and your mother as the Lord your God has commanded you,

  29. so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land your God has given you.

  30. You shall not murder.

  31. You shall not commit adultery.

  32. You shall not steal.

  33. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

  34. And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife.

  35. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor's house or land,

  36. his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey,

  37. or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

  38. These are the commands the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to you,

  39. to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire,

  40. the cloud and the deep darkness.

  41. And he added nothing more than he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.

  42. Okay.

  43. Thanks, Johnny.

  44. Thanks, Johnny.

  45. Thanks, Johnny.

  46. Thanks, Johnny.

  47. Thanks, Johnny.

  48. Thanks, Johnny.

  49. Thanks, Johnny.

  50. Thanks, Johnny.

  51. Thanks, Johnny.

  52. Thanks, Johnny.

  53. Concern for those who've been asking how we are.

  54. We're doing all right.

  55. It's a case of 60-40 at this stage rather than 40-60,

  56. if you can work that out, doing better and on the mend.

  57. So thank you.

  58. But keep praying for me as I preach.

  59. I have water, but I need God's strength.

  60. So keep your Bibles open, please, to Deuteronomy.

  61. Well, we're going to look a little bit at chapter 4 as well, just briefly, and chapters 5 and 6.

  62. This is from the body of Jesus.

  63. This is yours.

  64. Oh.

  65. Sorry, there is another announcement.

  66. Reality at 6, half 6 at Maria's.

  67. So, all those involved, see you there.

  68. Well, let's pray.

  69. Father God, we thank you so much for your love, your kindness, your goodness expressed in so many different ways.

  70. Thank you for your word.

  71. Thank you for your commands, for your laws.

  72. And as we look at them together, help us to see what they are to us today.

  73. And help us to see what they point us to.

  74. Encourage us through this morning.

  75. And bless us richly.

  76. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  77. Amen.

  78. Well, when I was a kid, I had this, what you might call a love-hate relationship with my parents.

  79. Most of the time, we were getting on great.

  80. Fun family times, going on holidays.

  81. A mum and a dad who supported me, who cared for me deeply.

  82. But then there were occasions when I would get really angry and annoyed and think they were the worst parents in the world.

  83. And you're probably sitting there thinking, hey, you didn't have the worst, I had the worst.

  84. No, you didn't.

  85. I'd go up to my room, huffing and puffing.

  86. What are they saying?

  87. All that sort of thing.

  88. And what would get me so worked up was, they would tell me that I couldn't do something that I really wanted to do.

  89. Like, watch telly at half ten at night on school days or something.

  90. Or that they would tell me I had to do something that I really didn't want to do.

  91. Like, help out my brother or sister.

  92. You see, I enjoyed their love, but I hated their laws.

  93. And in some ways, that's the problem with Deuteronomy.

  94. Because Deuteronomy is all about law.

  95. That's what Deuteronomy means.

  96. It means a second law, a retelling of God's law.

  97. Look at chapter 4, verse 44.

  98. Chapter 4, verse 44.

  99. This is the law Moses set before the Israelites.

  100. These are the stipulations, decrees, and laws Moses gave them when they came out of Egypt.

  101. Now, who wants to read something like that?

  102. Why not talk about good stuff like God's love or God's compassion?

  103. Why spoil it all by talking about God's laws?

  104. Why not talk about good stuff like that?

  105. Why not talk about good stuff like that?

  106. You see, God's law is one of the major stumbling blocks for people to Christianity.

  107. People just read something like this and they say,

  108. See, it's all about rules and regulations.

  109. Things you must do and things that you can't do.

  110. It's restrictive and oppressive.

  111. God is nothing more than a big bully, a ruthless dictator who just makes up rules to spoil our fun and to take away our freedom.

  112. Well, in chapter 5 and 6, we are introduced to God's law.

  113. What is well known as the Ten Commandments.

  114. But surprisingly, God's love is not opposite to God's law.

  115. Just as my parents, well, they actually did love me and care for me,

  116. and they gave me laws because they did love me.

  117. Well, so God gives us his law because he cares and loves us.

  118. We're going to look at three big things here in regards to the law.

  119. The first one is this.

  120. The reason for God's law.

  121. God gave his law in the context of a loving covenant.

  122. Look at verse 1 of chapter 5.

  123. Moses summoned all Israel and said,

  124. Hear, O Israel, the decrees and laws I declare in your hearing today.

  125. Learn them and be sure to follow them.

  126. The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.

  127. That was Mount Sinai.

  128. It was not with our fathers that the Lord made this covenant,

  129. but with us, with all of us who are alive here today.

  130. You see, like the promises we make in marriage to our spouse,

  131. so God's covenant is his promise towards his people.

  132. His passionate, eternal commitment towards his people.

  133. A commitment to bless them.

  134. A commitment to be with them.

  135. A commitment to give them a land.

  136. To save them.

  137. To give them life in all its fullness.

  138. And because of his promise,

  139. God would do what it would take to keep his people.

  140. In fact, God would lay down his life for us.

  141. God, who made his commitment to his people,

  142. would die for his people to ensure that that relationship would stay for all eternity.

  143. Now, it's in that context that God gives his law.

  144. God is not a dictator.

  145. God is not a bully.

  146. He is deeply committed to us, his people.

  147. We're given two reasons for his law.

  148. First, to remind us of his amazing grace.

  149. Look what God says to the people before he even gives a single law.

  150. In verse 6.

  151. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt,

  152. out of the land of slavery.

  153. I am the God who has graciously rescued you.

  154. I delivered you from your chains.

  155. I freed you from slavery.

  156. This whole theme of grace is picked up again in chapter 6.

  157. Have a look at verse 10 of chapter 6.

  158. Verse 10.

  159. When the Lord your God brings you into the land,

  160. he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,

  161. to give you a land with large flourishing cities

  162. you did not build,

  163. houses filled with all kinds of good things

  164. you did not provide,

  165. wells you did not dig,

  166. and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant.

  167. Then when you eat and are satisfied

  168. when you're sitting down in the chair rubbing your full belly,

  169. be careful that you do not forget the Lord

  170. who bought you out of Egypt,

  171. out of the land of slavery.

  172. You see, the laws were there to remind them,

  173. hey guys, listen,

  174. everything that you have,

  175. where you live,

  176. the land that you have,

  177. is all been graciously and generously provided to you by God.

  178. Or look down at chapter 6, verse 20.

  179. In the future,

  180. when your son asks you,

  181. Dad, what is the meaning of the stipulations,

  182. the decrees and the laws that the Lord our God has commanded us?

  183. Well, tell him,

  184. Son, it was like this.

  185. We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt,

  186. but the Lord bought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

  187. Before our eyes,

  188. the Lord sent miraculous signs and wonders,

  189. great and terrible,

  190. upon Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household.

  191. But he bought us out from there

  192. to bring us in and give us the land

  193. that he promised on oath to our forefathers.

  194. You see, the law is there to teach them

  195. that grace covers their whole life.

  196. It stretches back into their past,

  197. to their rescue from Egypt,

  198. and it stretches forward into eternity,

  199. to the future,

  200. as they get ready to go into the promised land.

  201. So every time we ask the question,

  202. why do we have God's law?

  203. Why must we obey O God?

  204. Well, the answer is simple.

  205. Because God has been incredibly gracious to us.

  206. Because God, in our sense,

  207. is the one who has rescued us.

  208. He is the one who has freed us

  209. from slavery to sin and death.

  210. God is the one who has promised us a future,

  211. an eternal home in heaven.

  212. Not because of what you do,

  213. but because of who he is.

  214. So God gives us his law

  215. so that we will never forget,

  216. but always remember

  217. his amazing grace towards us.

  218. Which brings us to the second reason for the law.

  219. To show us how to live

  220. in relationship with this God

  221. who has rescued us.

  222. Look at the headlines

  223. of chapter 5,

  224. the Ten Commandments,

  225. starting at verse 7.

  226. Let's just go through them.

  227. Just the headlines.

  228. You shall have no other gods before me.

  229. Verse 8.

  230. You shall not make for yourself an idol.

  231. Verse 11.

  232. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

  233. Verse 12.

  234. Observe the Sabbath day.

  235. Verse 11.

  236. 16.

  237. 16.

  238. Honor your father and your mother.

  239. 17.

  240. You shall not murder.

  241. You shall not commit adultery.

  242. You shall not steal.

  243. You shall not give false testimony.

  244. Verse 21.

  245. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.

  246. And you shall not set your desire

  247. on your neighbor's possessions.

  248. These Ten Commandments

  249. show us how we are to live

  250. in relationship with God.

  251. The first four,

  252. if you look there,

  253. all relate to God.

  254. How we should view God.

  255. How we should respect God.

  256. How we honour God.

  257. The last six

  258. all relate to other people.

  259. How we should live with each other.

  260. How we should treat each other

  261. within society.

  262. Now while we could make this division

  263. and this distinction,

  264. we've got to be careful

  265. that we don't separate them.

  266. You see,

  267. how we love each other

  268. is a sign of how we love God.

  269. So for example,

  270. I can't say,

  271. oh I worship God.

  272. But then at the same time say,

  273. I'm sick and fed up of Kirsty.

  274. I think I'll have another wife.

  275. You can't do that.

  276. You can't separate them.

  277. Similarly,

  278. you can't say,

  279. I won't have any other God.

  280. God is my only God.

  281. But then at the same time,

  282. make work

  283. or your family

  284. more important than God.

  285. Look at chapter 6,

  286. verse 4.

  287. Hear,

  288. O Israel,

  289. the Lord our God,

  290. the Lord is one.

  291. Love the Lord your God

  292. with all your heart

  293. and with all your soul

  294. and with all your strength.

  295. These commandments

  296. that I give you today

  297. are to be upon your hearts.

  298. In other words,

  299. to love God

  300. God

  301. is to take

  302. all of his commands

  303. to heart

  304. and it's to live them

  305. all out.

  306. So to show that I do

  307. love God

  308. with all my heart,

  309. strength and soul

  310. means

  311. loving

  312. my neighbour,

  313. means loving

  314. all those

  315. within my community

  316. with the commandments

  317. that God has given me.

  318. So God gives us

  319. the law

  320. so that we will know

  321. how to live

  322. in relationship

  323. with him

  324. and with the people

  325. that he has put

  326. around us.

  327. Now before we move on,

  328. I want us to notice

  329. the order

  330. in which

  331. the law came

  332. and it's vital

  333. that we see this.

  334. The rescue

  335. from Egypt

  336. came first,

  337. the relationship

  338. in the promised land

  339. came second.

  340. Now we've got

  341. to get that right.

  342. Grace comes first,

  343. then comes the law.

  344. You see,

  345. God

  346. did not give them

  347. the law first

  348. and say,

  349. if you obey

  350. this law perfectly,

  351. if you

  352. keep it

  353. the way

  354. I've given it to you,

  355. then

  356. I will rescue you

  357. and then

  358. I will bring you

  359. into a new land.

  360. No,

  361. God didn't say that.

  362. God says,

  363. because I have

  364. rescued you,

  365. because I have

  366. delivered you,

  367. I give you

  368. my law

  369. so that you can

  370. live

  371. in relationship

  372. with me.

  373. So the law

  374. is given

  375. to remind us

  376. of God's

  377. amazing grace

  378. and how we are

  379. to live

  380. in relationship

  381. with God.

  382. God's

  383. So that's the

  384. reason for the law.

  385. Thanks,

  386. Ralph.

  387. Second,

  388. there's a problem

  389. with God's law.

  390. Moses reminds

  391. the people

  392. of what happened

  393. when they

  394. received

  395. God's law.

  396. Look at chapter 5,

  397. verse 23.

  398. Here he is

  399. on the mountain

  400. reminding them

  401. of what had

  402. happened.

  403. He says,

  404. verse 23,

  405. when you heard

  406. the voice

  407. out of the

  408. darkness,

  409. while the

  410. mountain was

  411. ablaze with

  412. fire,

  413. all the leading

  414. men of your

  415. tribes and your

  416. elders came to

  417. me.

  418. And you said,

  419. the Lord our

  420. God has shown

  421. us his glory

  422. and his majesty

  423. and we have

  424. heard his voice

  425. from the fire.

  426. Today we have

  427. seen that a man

  428. can live

  429. even if God

  430. speaks with him.

  431. But now,

  432. why should we

  433. die?

  434. this great

  435. fire will

  436. consume us

  437. and we will

  438. die if we

  439. hear the

  440. voice of the

  441. Lord our

  442. God any

  443. longer.

  444. Now, do you

  445. see the

  446. tension in

  447. those verses?

  448. They want to

  449. hear God's

  450. voice.

  451. They want to

  452. hear God's

  453. law because

  454. it's good.

  455. But they're

  456. also afraid if

  457. they hear God's

  458. voice, if they

  459. do get God's

  460. law, that

  461. they will die.

  462. look at

  463. verse 26.

  464. For what

  465. mortal man

  466. has ever

  467. heard the

  468. voice of the

  469. living God

  470. speaking out

  471. of the fire

  472. as we have

  473. and survived?

  474. You see,

  475. they want to

  476. hear, they

  477. want God's

  478. law, but

  479. they can't

  480. handle God's

  481. law.

  482. On the one

  483. side they know

  484. that God's

  485. law is good

  486. and it's

  487. beautiful, but

  488. they also know

  489. on the other

  490. side that it is

  491. dangerous and

  492. condemning.

  493. So they've

  494. got this

  495. tension, we

  496. want it, but

  497. we can't

  498. handle it.

  499. You see, God's

  500. law brings

  501. life and

  502. death.

  503. Keep your

  504. finger there in

  505. chapter 5 and

  506. 6 and jump

  507. forward to

  508. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  509. chapter 30.

  510. These verses

  511. sum up, if

  512. you like, the

  513. great tension

  514. that exists in

  515. the law.

  516. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 30:15

  517. chapter 30,

  518. verse 15.

  519. See, I set

  520. before you

  521. today life

  522. life and

  523. prosperity,

  524. death and

  525. destruction.

  526. There's the

  527. two things,

  528. life and

  529. death.

  530. Verse 16,

  531. for I command

  532. you today to

  533. love the

  534. Lord your

  535. God, to

  536. walk in

  537. his ways,

  538. and to

  539. keep his

  540. commands,

  541. decrees,

  542. and laws.

  543. Then you

  544. will live

  545. and increase

  546. and the

  547. Lord your

  548. God will

  549. bless you

  550. in the

  551. land you

  552. are entering

  553. to

  554. possess.

  555. But,

  556. verse 17,

  557. if your

  558. hearts turn

  559. away and

  560. you are

  561. not obedient,

  562. and if

  563. you are

  564. drawn away

  565. to bow

  566. down to

  567. other gods

  568. and worship

  569. them, I

  570. declare to

  571. you this

  572. day that

  573. you will

  574. certainly be

  575. destroyed.

  576. You will

  577. not live

  578. long in

  579. the land

  580. you are

  581. crossing

  582. the

  583. Jordan

  584. to

  585. enter

  586. and

  587. possess.

  588. Go back

  589. to chapter

  590. 5.

  591. So do

  592. you see

  593. the tension

  594. there?

  595. By keeping

  596. the law

  597. and following

  598. the law,

  599. it's going

  600. to go

  601. well for

  602. you.

  603. But the

  604. opposite is

  605. also true.

  606. If you

  607. fail to

  608. keep this

  609. law,

  610. it's going

  611. to be

  612. disastrous

  613. for you.

  614. God will

  615. punish you.

  616. God will

  617. condemn

  618. you.

  619. And that's

  620. the tension.

  621. So the

  622. people,

  623. they want

  624. God's law,

  625. they love

  626. God's law

  627. because it's

  628. going to be

  629. good for

  630. them.

  631. Think of

  632. it like

  633. this.

  634. If you

  635. could

  636. imagine

  637. if we

  638. could all

  639. keep these

  640. Ten Commandments,

  641. we would

  642. have the

  643. most perfect

  644. of communities.

  645. Imagine a

  646. community where

  647. instead of

  648. everybody being

  649. self-centered

  650. and always

  651. looking after

  652. what they

  653. want,

  654. they are

  655. God-centered.

  656. And God

  657. is their

  658. priority.

  659. community.

  660. Imagine a

  661. place where

  662. looking at

  663. the fourth

  664. commandment,

  665. we understand

  666. what work

  667. is and

  668. what rest

  669. is and

  670. we have

  671. that balance

  672. completely

  673. right and

  674. there's no

  675. exploitation of

  676. employees and

  677. there's no

  678. abuse.

  679. Imagine a

  680. community where

  681. children honour

  682. their parents

  683. and that

  684. all goes

  685. right and

  686. where parents

  687. equally look

  688. after their

  689. children correctly.

  690. Imagine a

  691. community where

  692. there's no

  693. murder and

  694. we can expand

  695. that out to

  696. language of

  697. hate and

  698. retaliation and

  699. anger.

  700. Imagine a

  701. community where

  702. there's no

  703. adultery,

  704. either of the

  705. physical kind or

  706. the internet

  707. kind,

  708. where there's

  709. no stealing

  710. and that

  711. doesn't just

  712. mean taking

  713. sweeties from

  714. the shop,

  715. it means

  716. knocking off

  717. early from

  718. work or

  719. not paying

  720. taxes or

  721. people charging

  722. for things that

  723. are more

  724. expensive than

  725. what they

  726. really are,

  727. where proper

  728. business practices

  729. happen.

  730. Imagine a

  731. community where

  732. there's no

  733. lies or

  734. unhealthy

  735. desires.

  736. This all

  737. flows out of

  738. the Ten

  739. Commandments,

  740. you see,

  741. it's not

  742. bad,

  743. it's actually

  744. good.

  745. And this is

  746. the kind of

  747. community that

  748. we all long

  749. for and no

  750. wonder the

  751. people are

  752. saying,

  753. yes, we

  754. want God's

  755. law.

  756. We do want

  757. it because it

  758. is perfectly

  759. good for us.

  760. But the

  761. more we

  762. commit ourselves

  763. to God,

  764. the more we

  765. realise how

  766. incapable we

  767. are of

  768. keeping this

  769. law.

  770. law.

  771. It's too

  772. big.

  773. It's too

  774. great.

  775. We break

  776. it every

  777. single day.

  778. We don't

  779. love God

  780. with all our

  781. heart and

  782. all our

  783. soul and

  784. all our

  785. strength.

  786. We love

  787. me.

  788. And that's

  789. the tension

  790. that we

  791. face.

  792. We want to

  793. do what's

  794. right.

  795. we want

  796. God's

  797. law because

  798. it creates

  799. a beautiful

  800. life.

  801. It brings

  802. about a

  803. great

  804. community.

  805. But the

  806. deeper that

  807. we get

  808. into it,

  809. the more

  810. that we

  811. try to

  812. live it

  813. and enjoy

  814. it,

  815. the more

  816. it actually

  817. overcomes

  818. us and

  819. we actually

  820. drown in

  821. God's

  822. law because

  823. we fail

  824. and we

  825. fall all

  826. the time.

  827. look at

  828. chapter 6

  829. verse 25.

  830. Look what

  831. the people

  832. say.

  833. If we

  834. are careful

  835. to obey

  836. all this

  837. law before

  838. the Lord

  839. our God

  840. as he

  841. has commanded

  842. us,

  843. that will

  844. be our

  845. righteousness.

  846. If we

  847. can do

  848. everything

  849. that God

  850. asks of

  851. us,

  852. we will

  853. live in

  854. this beautiful

  855. relationship

  856. with God

  857. and with

  858. each other.

  859. Everything

  860. is going

  861. to be

  862. perfectly

  863. good

  864. if we

  865. can do

  866. it.

  867. But that's

  868. the problem

  869. of the

  870. law.

  871. And that's

  872. our problem

  873. too.

  874. We want

  875. it.

  876. We long

  877. to obey

  878. it.

  879. Because it

  880. creates the

  881. most beautiful

  882. and perfect

  883. of life

  884. and community,

  885. we know

  886. it will be

  887. good for

  888. us.

  889. But we

  890. just can't

  891. keep it.

  892. it.

  893. We fail

  894. and we

  895. fall

  896. miserably

  897. all of

  898. the time.

  899. So what

  900. are we

  901. to do

  902. with God's

  903. law?

  904. Well that

  905. brings us

  906. to the

  907. third

  908. aspect,

  909. the

  910. solution

  911. to God's

  912. law.

  913. Thankfully

  914. God has

  915. done something

  916. about our

  917. inability to

  918. keep God's

  919. law.

  920. Look at

  921. chapter 5

  922. verse 4.

  923. chapter 5

  924. verse 4.

  925. The Lord

  926. spoke to you

  927. face to face

  928. out of the

  929. fire on

  930. that mountain.

  931. Moses says,

  932. at that

  933. time I

  934. stood

  935. between the

  936. Lord and

  937. you to

  938. declare to

  939. you the

  940. word of

  941. the Lord

  942. because you

  943. were afraid

  944. of the

  945. fire and

  946. did not

  947. go up

  948. the mountain.

  949. Moses,

  950. do you see,

  951. stands in

  952. for the

  953. people.

  954. He stands

  955. between God

  956. and the

  957. people.

  958. He acts

  959. as a

  960. mediator.

  961. Now I

  962. think we're

  963. used to

  964. mediators.

  965. We have

  966. them whenever

  967. there's a

  968. breakdown in

  969. a relationship

  970. between two

  971. parties.

  972. We've seen

  973. it on this

  974. island.

  975. We have

  976. political

  977. mediators,

  978. as was the

  979. case for the

  980. Good Friday

  981. Agreement.

  982. Someone's

  983. speaking on

  984. behalf of the

  985. other parties.

  986. We have

  987. marriage

  988. mediators who

  989. are there to

  990. help bring the

  991. separated couple

  992. back to each

  993. other.

  994. Well in his

  995. role as a

  996. mediator,

  997. Moses was

  998. there to

  999. speak to

  1000. God for

  1001. the people

  1002. and Moses

  1003. was there to

  1004. speak to

  1005. the people

  1006. for God.

  1007. Look at

  1008. chapter 5

  1009. verse 26.

  1010. The people

  1011. said,

  1012. for what

  1013. mortal man

  1014. has ever

  1015. heard the

  1016. voice of

  1017. the living

  1018. God speaking

  1019. out of the

  1020. fires we

  1021. have and

  1022. survived?

  1023. So they

  1024. said to

  1025. Moses,

  1026. verse 27,

  1027. go near

  1028. and listen

  1029. to all that

  1030. the Lord

  1031. our God

  1032. says.

  1033. Then you

  1034. tell us

  1035. whatever the

  1036. Lord our

  1037. God tells

  1038. you and

  1039. we will

  1040. listen and

  1041. obey.

  1042. It sounds

  1043. easy enough,

  1044. doesn't it?

  1045. But here's

  1046. the difficulty.

  1047. Moses could

  1048. only tell the

  1049. people what

  1050. God would

  1051. do.

  1052. Look,

  1053. everyone,

  1054. if you keep

  1055. the law,

  1056. God is going

  1057. to bless you.

  1058. This is what

  1059. he's going

  1060. to do for

  1061. you.

  1062. If you

  1063. break the

  1064. law,

  1065. God is

  1066. going to

  1067. punish you.

  1068. And all

  1069. Moses could

  1070. do on the

  1071. other side

  1072. was he

  1073. could only

  1074. report to

  1075. God what

  1076. the people

  1077. would do.

  1078. Well,

  1079. God,

  1080. you know,

  1081. the people

  1082. have promised

  1083. that they're

  1084. going to

  1085. listen to

  1086. you and

  1087. obey you.

  1088. That's his

  1089. only function

  1090. as a

  1091. mediator.

  1092. Well,

  1093. the fact

  1094. is,

  1095. they did

  1096. not listen

  1097. and they

  1098. did not

  1099. obey.

  1100. And although

  1101. Moses was a

  1102. mediator,

  1103. he could do

  1104. nothing to

  1105. make the

  1106. people obey.

  1107. Moses had

  1108. no power

  1109. in himself

  1110. to change

  1111. their life

  1112. or behaviour.

  1113. So it

  1114. seems at

  1115. this stage

  1116. it's more

  1117. of a

  1118. problem

  1119. than a

  1120. solution.

  1121. But God

  1122. knows the

  1123. people and

  1124. God does

  1125. not give

  1126. up on

  1127. his people.

  1128. God

  1129. longs that

  1130. we would

  1131. love him

  1132. and obey

  1133. him.

  1134. Look at

  1135. verse 29.

  1136. Oh,

  1137. he says,

  1138. oh,

  1139. that their

  1140. hearts

  1141. would be

  1142. inclined to

  1143. fear me

  1144. and keep

  1145. all my

  1146. commands

  1147. always

  1148. so that

  1149. it might

  1150. go well

  1151. with them

  1152. and their

  1153. children

  1154. forever.

  1155. This is

  1156. the cry

  1157. of a

  1158. deeply

  1159. passionate,

  1160. loving,

  1161. and committed

  1162. God.

  1163. Oh,

  1164. that their

  1165. hearts

  1166. would be

  1167. inclined to

  1168. me.

  1169. This is

  1170. the cry

  1171. of a

  1172. heartache.

  1173. God's

  1174. deepest

  1175. longing,

  1176. God's

  1177. greatest

  1178. desire

  1179. is that

  1180. we would

  1181. love

  1182. him,

  1183. that we

  1184. would

  1185. obey

  1186. him,

  1187. that we

  1188. would

  1189. want

  1190. to

  1191. do

  1192. it.

  1193. And

  1194. God's

  1195. heart

  1196. breaks

  1197. when we

  1198. turn away

  1199. from him.

  1200. And he

  1201. won't give

  1202. up on us.

  1203. And he

  1204. won't give

  1205. up on his

  1206. people.

  1207. So God

  1208. in his

  1209. grace

  1210. provides

  1211. another

  1212. mediator.

  1213. He sends

  1214. a better

  1215. and greater

  1216. mediator,

  1217. mediator,

  1218. the perfect

  1219. mediator,

  1220. Jesus

  1221. Christ.

  1222. Because in

  1223. his role

  1224. as mediator,

  1225. Jesus comes

  1226. to stand

  1227. in for

  1228. us.

  1229. Jesus is

  1230. the one

  1231. who came

  1232. into the

  1233. world to

  1234. represent

  1235. us.

  1236. My life

  1237. becomes

  1238. his life

  1239. and his

  1240. life becomes

  1241. my life.

  1242. Well,

  1243. how does

  1244. that work

  1245. out?

  1246. we'll

  1247. get these

  1248. two ideas.

  1249. First,

  1250. Jesus loved

  1251. and obeyed

  1252. God perfectly

  1253. for us.

  1254. Jesus

  1255. kept the

  1256. law that

  1257. we could

  1258. never keep

  1259. on our

  1260. behalf.

  1261. Jesus,

  1262. when he

  1263. walked this

  1264. earth,

  1265. was the

  1266. only one

  1267. who could

  1268. truly say,

  1269. I loved

  1270. God with

  1271. all my

  1272. heart,

  1273. with all

  1274. my soul,

  1275. and with

  1276. all my

  1277. strength.

  1278. Jesus

  1279. kept the

  1280. Ten

  1281. Commandments

  1282. perfectly.

  1283. He never

  1284. got any

  1285. of them

  1286. wrong.

  1287. He obeyed

  1288. God's

  1289. law for

  1290. us,

  1291. so that

  1292. we might

  1293. freely receive

  1294. the blessings

  1295. of God,

  1296. that we

  1297. might enjoy

  1298. God and

  1299. a relationship

  1300. with him.

  1301. So that's

  1302. what he does

  1303. on one

  1304. side.

  1305. But it's

  1306. so much

  1307. more,

  1308. because on

  1309. the other

  1310. side,

  1311. he doesn't

  1312. just keep

  1313. the law,

  1314. Jesus

  1315. takes the

  1316. blame for

  1317. our

  1318. disobedience.

  1319. He takes

  1320. the failure

  1321. to keep

  1322. the law

  1323. on himself,

  1324. and he

  1325. suffers the

  1326. punishment

  1327. that we

  1328. deserve.

  1329. That's what

  1330. his death

  1331. on the

  1332. cross is

  1333. all about.

  1334. The

  1335. judgment

  1336. that Jesus

  1337. received

  1338. was a

  1339. judgment

  1340. for you

  1341. and for

  1342. me.

  1343. And he

  1344. stands in

  1345. for us.

  1346. He takes

  1347. the hit

  1348. for us.

  1349. Jesus

  1350. suffered

  1351. hell,

  1352. which is

  1353. like an

  1354. eternity

  1355. without

  1356. commands.

  1357. where

  1358. everybody

  1359. does

  1360. as they

  1361. like,

  1362. destroying

  1363. one another,

  1364. wrecking

  1365. one another.

  1366. And Jesus

  1367. suffered

  1368. hell for

  1369. us so

  1370. that we

  1371. might enjoy

  1372. heaven and

  1373. eternity with

  1374. him where

  1375. everybody does

  1376. obey and

  1377. everybody does

  1378. everything perfectly

  1379. right.

  1380. We can

  1381. summarize it

  1382. like this

  1383. on the

  1384. screen.

  1385. it's

  1386. there.

  1387. Jesus

  1388. was

  1389. treated

  1390. as a

  1391. lawbreaker

  1392. for us

  1393. so that

  1394. we might

  1395. be treated

  1396. as a

  1397. lawkeeper

  1398. like

  1399. him.

  1400. That's

  1401. what he

  1402. did for

  1403. us.

  1404. So,

  1405. what does

  1406. that mean

  1407. in terms

  1408. of the

  1409. law today?

  1410. What's our

  1411. relationship

  1412. with the

  1413. law?

  1414. Does it

  1415. mean we

  1416. just throw

  1417. the law

  1418. out?

  1419. We don't

  1420. need the

  1421. Ten

  1422. Commandments?

  1423. Sure,

  1424. Jesus died

  1425. for us

  1426. and forgave

  1427. us.

  1428. That's

  1429. all right

  1430. now.

  1431. I don't

  1432. need the

  1433. law.

  1434. Well,

  1435. no,

  1436. remember

  1437. what we

  1438. said at

  1439. the

  1440. beginning.

  1441. Rescue

  1442. came first,

  1443. then came

  1444. the

  1445. relationship.

  1446. Grace

  1447. comes first,

  1448. then comes

  1449. the law.

  1450. God

  1451. doesn't give

  1452. us the

  1453. law and

  1454. say,

  1455. listen

  1456. guys,

  1457. if you

  1458. obey this

  1459. law perfectly,

  1460. I will

  1461. love you and

  1462. I will

  1463. care for

  1464. you and

  1465. I will

  1466. give my

  1467. life for

  1468. you.

  1469. If you

  1470. keep this

  1471. law perfectly,

  1472. I will

  1473. accept you

  1474. and welcome

  1475. you.

  1476. No,

  1477. God never

  1478. says that.

  1479. God

  1480. says,

  1481. because I

  1482. have kept

  1483. the law

  1484. for you,

  1485. I love

  1486. you.

  1487. Because I

  1488. was punished

  1489. as a

  1490. lawbreaker

  1491. for you,

  1492. I welcome

  1493. you and

  1494. I accept

  1495. you.

  1496. Because I

  1497. died for

  1498. you,

  1499. I give

  1500. you my

  1501. good

  1502. law.

  1503. A

  1504. law not

  1505. there so

  1506. you can

  1507. try and

  1508. earn my

  1509. favour,

  1510. but a

  1511. law that

  1512. is there

  1513. to say,

  1514. follow this

  1515. law as

  1516. a way of

  1517. saying,

  1518. thank you

  1519. that you

  1520. are my

  1521. saviour.

  1522. It's not

  1523. there to

  1524. earn favour,

  1525. but to

  1526. say thank

  1527. you for

  1528. being my

  1529. saviour.

  1530. God's

  1531. law is

  1532. a good

  1533. law,

  1534. because it

  1535. points us

  1536. to Jesus

  1537. and helps

  1538. us to

  1539. see our

  1540. need of

  1541. Jesus.

  1542. But Jesus

  1543. then in

  1544. turn brings

  1545. us back

  1546. to the

  1547. law and

  1548. says,

  1549. follow the

  1550. law as

  1551. a way of

  1552. saying thank

  1553. you to

  1554. me for

  1555. all that

  1556. I have

  1557. done for

  1558. you.

  1559. Let's

  1560. pray.

  1561. Amen.

  1562. Amen.

  1563. Amen.

  1564. Amen.

  1565. Amen.

  1566. Amen.

  1567. Amen.

  1568. Amen.

  1569. Amen.

  1570. Amen.

  1571. Amen.

  1572. Amen.

  1573. Amen.

  1574. Amen.

  1575. Amen.

  1576. Our

  1577. Father God,

  1578. we thank

  1579. you for

  1580. your good

  1581. law.

  1582. We thank

  1583. you that

  1584. you have

  1585. given us

  1586. your words

  1587. so that

  1588. we know

  1589. how to

  1590. live.

  1591. And we

  1592. pray that

  1593. as we

  1594. read your

  1595. law,

  1596. as we

  1597. seek to

  1598. follow it,

  1599. it would

  1600. remind us

  1601. daily of

  1602. your amazing

  1603. grace,

  1604. of how

  1605. you have

  1606. rescued us

  1607. and blessed

  1608. us and

  1609. given us

  1610. so much.

  1611. And help

  1612. us in the

  1613. days,

  1614. the hours,

  1615. the moments,

  1616. where we're

  1617. so conscious

  1618. of us

  1619. failing,

  1620. that we

  1621. would run

  1622. to Christ

  1623. and remember

  1624. that he is

  1625. the one who

  1626. has not only

  1627. kept the

  1628. law for

  1629. us,

  1630. but taken

  1631. the punishment

  1632. for breaking

  1633. the law.

  1634. and he

  1635. has given

  1636. us new

  1637. life in

  1638. its place.

  1639. So help

  1640. us to

  1641. live in

  1642. the light

  1643. of that

  1644. today.

  1645. Help us

  1646. to live

  1647. in the

  1648. light of

  1649. that in

  1650. our

  1651. relationships

  1652. within

  1653. our

  1654. family,

  1655. within

  1656. our

  1657. community,

  1658. in our

  1659. places of

  1660. work,

  1661. and help

  1662. us to

  1663. show the

  1664. grace of

  1665. God to

  1666. those around

  1667. us as

  1668. we seek

  1669. to follow

  1670. your ways.

  1671. We pray

  1672. this in

  1673. Jesus'

  1674. name.

  1675. Amen.

  1676. Amen.

  1677. So in

  1678. response to

  1679. what we've

  1680. heard this

  1681. morning,

  1682. particularly

  1683. Jesus'

  1684. role as

  1685. our

  1686. mediator,

  1687. we're going

  1688. to sing

  1689. before the

  1690. throne of

  1691. God

  1692. above.

  1693. We're

  1694. coming

  1695. seated.

  1696. This

  1697. serves as a

  1698. good introduction

  1699. to our

  1700. time around

  1701. the Lord's

  1702. table.

  1703. So we

  1704. just want

  1705. to continue

  1706. that

  1707. thought

  1708. or that

  1709. idea of

  1710. Jesus as

  1711. our

  1712. mediator,

  1713. the person

  1714. that stands

  1715. in the

  1716. gap for

  1717. us,

  1718. between us

  1719. and a

  1720. righteous

  1721. and Holy

  1722. God.

  1723. Amen.

  1724. Amen.

  1725. Amen.

  1726. Amen.

  1727. Amen.

  1728. Amen.

  1729. Amen.

  1730. Amen.

  1731. Amen.

  1732. Amen.

  1733. Amen.

  1734. Amen.

  1735. Amen.

  1736. Amen.

  1737. Amen.

  1738. Amen.

  1739. Amen.

  1740. Amen.

  1741. Amen.

  1742. Amen.

  1743. Amen.

  1744. Amen.

  1745. Amen.

1746. Before the throne of God above

  1747. I have a stronger, perfect plea

1748. A great high priest whose name is love

1749. Whoever lives and pleads for me

1750. My name is graven on his hands

1751. My name is written on his heart

1752. I know that while in heaven he stands

1753. No tongue can bid me hence depart

1754. No tongue can bid me hence depart

1755. When Satan tempts me to despair

1756. And tells me of the guilt within

1757. Upward I look and see him there

1758. Who made an end to all my sin

1759. Because the sinless Savior died

1760. My sinful soul is counted free

1761. But God the just is satisfied

1762. To look on him and pardon me

1763. To look on him and pardon me

1764. To look on him and pardon me

1765. Behold him there, the risen Lamb

  1766. My perfect, spotless righteousness

1767. The great, unchangeable I am

1768. The King of glory and of grace

1769. One with himself I cannot find

1770. My sinful soul is healed by his blood

1771. For life is his with Christ on high

1772. With Christ my Savior and my God

1773. With Christ my Savior and my God

1774. The King of the Lord

  1775. And cond complètement

  1776. We are dead

  1777. And then we areHHH

  1778. First, we areVS

1779. And then we are eventually
