  1. Deuteronomy chapter 7, page 186.

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  2. Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons.

  3. For they will turn your sons away from following me to serve other gods.

  4. And the Lord's anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you.

  5. This is what you are to do to them. Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their asherah poles and burn their idols in the fire.

  6. For you are a people holy to the Lord your God.

  7. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.

  8. The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples.

  9. For you were the fewest of all peoples.

  10. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers.

  11. That he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

  12. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God.

  13. He is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.

  14. But those who hate him, he will repay to their face by destruction.

  15. He will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.

  16. Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.

  17. If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you as he swore to your forefathers.

  18. He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers.

  19. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the crops of your land, your grain, new wine and oil, the calves of your herd and the lambs of your flocks in the lands that he swore to your forefathers to give you.

  20. You will be blessed more than any other people.

  21. None of your men or women will be childless, nor any of your livestock without young.

  22. The Lord will keep you free from every disease.

  23. He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all who hate you.

  24. You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you.

  25. Do not look on them with pity and do not serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you.

  26. You may say to yourself, these nations are stronger than we are.

  27. How can we drive them out?

  28. But do not be afraid of them.

  29. Remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.

  30. You saw with your own eyes the great trials and the miraculous signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm with which the Lord your God brought you out.

  31. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.

  32. Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished.

  33. Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God who is among you is a great and awesome God.

  34. The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little.

  35. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you.

  36. But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed.

  37. He will give their kings into your hand, and you will wipe out their names from under heaven.

  38. No one will be able to stand up against you.

  39. You will destroy them.

  40. The images of their gods you are to burn in the fire.

  41. Do not covet the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the Lord your God.

  42. Do not bring a detestable thing into your house, or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction.

  43. Do not bring a detestable thing into your house, or you will be set apart for destruction.

  44. Do not bring a detestable thing into your house, or you will be set apart for destruction.

  45. Do not bring a detestable thing into your house, or you will be set apart for destruction.

  46. Thanks very much, Ralph, for leading.

  47. Thanks there, Simon, for reading.

  48. A long section.

  49. So keep your Bibles open, please, at Deuteronomy chapter 7 and chapter 8.

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  50. Those are the two sections we're going to be looking at this morning.

  51. Again, if there are questions that we come up against that you want to be able to talk through or ask, then please do that afterwards.

  52. And as you're turning to the section there in Deuteronomy, just to remind you about the missions conference, which is happening next weekend.

  53. Friday evening is for younger people.

  54. Saturday morning, for all ages, there's a children and a creche programme as well.

  55. And then Saturday evening, again for all ages and college-age students as well.

  56. So do come along.

  57. It will be a great occasion meeting with other people from other churches,

  58. those who are concerned about seeing the good news of Christ go to all the world.

  59. And so try and be there if you can.

  60. Let's pray together and ask for God's help.

  61. For the Lord, your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.

  62. Father, our desire is that we get to know you better, the awesome God.

  63. As we read your word, as we seek to understand it, that we would meet with you and hear from you.

  64. And we pray that everything that you are would shape us and transform us.

  65. That we would not try and fit you into our own box or understanding.

  66. But that we would be people who love you and follow you.

  67. As the great and awesome God that you are.

  68. So please help us this morning.

  69. In Jesus' name.

  70. Amen.

  71. Well, if there was one section of the Bible that I could rip out and throw away,

  72. this would be it.

  73. In fact, I would say it's the most controversial issue that has caused so many people to question

  74. and ultimately reject Christianity.

  75. So what is the big issue?

  76. Well, if you listen carefully to the reading, you'll see it is all about the destruction of the nations.

  77. And the difficulty is God commands it.

  78. Look at chapter 7, verse 2.

  79. And when the Lord your God has delivered them, that's the nations over to you,

  80. and you have defeated them, then you must destroy them totally.

  81. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy.

  82. Or look at verse 16.

  83. You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives to you.

  84. Do not look on them with pity.

  85. But not only does God command it,

  86. He actually threatens it.

  87. So look at chapter 8, verse 19.

  88. Chapter 8, verse 19.

  89. If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them,

  90. I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.

  91. Like the nations the Lord destroyed before you,

  92. so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.

  93. If you don't do what I say,

  94. I'm going to destroy you.

  95. Now this, it seems, is nothing less than what we would call ethnic cleansing.

  96. Now according to the UN,

  97. here's the definition of what ethnic cleansing is.

  98. It is the process of eliminating unwanted ethnic or religious groups

  99. by deportation,

  100. forcible displacement,

  101. mass murder,

  102. with the intent of creating a territory

  103. inhabited by a people of pure ethnicity,

  104. religion,

  105. and culture.

  106. It is the most horrible

  107. and evil of crimes.

  108. It's the sort of thing that was attached to the Holocaust.

  109. So what is God doing,

  110. commanding,

  111. and threatening

  112. the total destruction

  113. of these nations?

  114. Richard Dawkins,

  115. the popular atheist,

  116. writer of the God delusion,

  117. came to this conclusion.

  118. He says,

  119. God is a vindictive,

  120. bloodthirsty,

  121. ethnic cleanser,

  122. a capriciously malevolent bully.

  123. Now in the light of what we have just read,

  124. we can understand why somebody like that would come to a conclusion.

  125. And we too can understand why we would begin to think

  126. that God could be charged with ethnic cleansing.

  127. So what are we to make of this God who commands

  128. and threatens the destruction

  129. of peoples,

  130. men and women

  131. and children?

  132. Well, first of all,

  133. God's terrible judgment.

  134. This is not about God

  135. who has lost his temper

  136. and who has it in for a particular people group.

  137. This is about God's just,

  138. fair,

  139. controlled,

  140. and settled response

  141. to all sin

  142. and evil.

  143. So let's try and unpack that

  144. under three things.

  145. First,

  146. a place without sin.

  147. From the very beginning,

  148. God had promised his people

  149. a place,

  150. a land

  151. that would be good

  152. and beautiful.

  153. We're told what that land

  154. is going to be like

  155. in chapter 7,

  156. verse 12.

  157. He says,

  158. if you pay attention to these laws

  159. and are careful to follow them,

  160. then the Lord your God

  161. will keep his covenant,

  162. the promise of love with you

  163. as he swore to your forefathers.

  164. He will love you

  165. and bless you

  166. and increase your numbers.

  167. He will bless the fruit of your womb,

  168. the crops of your land,

  169. your grain,

  170. new wine and oil,

  171. the calves of your herds

  172. and the lambs of your flocks

  173. in the land that he swore

  174. to your forefathers to give you.

  175. You will be blessed

  176. more than any other people.

  177. None of your men or women

  178. will be childless,

  179. nor any of your livestock

  180. without young.

  181. The Lord will keep you free

  182. from every disease.

  183. He will not inflict on you

  184. the horrible diseases

  185. you knew in Egypt,

  186. but he will inflict on them,

  187. he will inflict them

  188. on all who hate you.

  189. This is the most,

  190. if you like,

  191. perfect place to live.

  192. It's described as a land of blessing,

  193. without sickness or disease,

  194. a place where they are protected

  195. from their enemies,

  196. where their borders are secure

  197. and where they enjoy

  198. a full and prosperous life.

  199. It's the kind of land and home

  200. that we would want.

  201. It's a place without sin,

  202. without harm or danger,

  203. without evil or crime.

  204. It's a beautiful and a good land.

  205. It's all about protection

  206. and blessing.

  207. Look at chapter 8, verse 7.

  208. For the Lord your God

  209. is bringing you into a good land,

  210. a land with streams

  211. and pools of water,

  212. with springs flowing

  213. in the valleys and hills,

  214. a land with wheat and barley,

  215. vines and fig trees,

  216. pomegranates,

  217. olive oil and honey,

  218. a land where bread

  219. will not be scarce

  220. and you will lack nothing.

  221. A land where the rocks are iron

  222. and you can dig copper

  223. out of the hills.

  224. This land that is being described here

  225. is a kind of paradise.

  226. It's not unlike the Garden of Eden

  227. before the curse.

  228. And this is what we all long for.

  229. And this is what God had promised

  230. to his people,

  231. a place without sin or evil.

  232. But to make this land a reality,

  233. God must first deal with sin.

  234. You see, the place that God's people

  235. were to live in

  236. was occupied by nations

  237. that were utterly sinful.

  238. Look at chapter 7, verse 1.

  239. He says to them,

  240. look, when the Lord your God

  241. brings you into this land,

  242. remember this good land,

  243. that you are entering to possess,

  244. and he drives out before you

  245. the many nations,

  246. the Hittites,

  247. the Girgashites,

  248. the Amorites,

  249. Canaanites,

  250. Perizzites,

  251. Hivites,

  252. and Jebusites,

  253. the seven nations

  254. that are larger

  255. and stronger than you.

  256. These were nations

  257. that for centuries

  258. had lived in rebellion

  259. against God,

  260. had destroyed other people,

  261. had ruined people.

  262. Keep your finger there

  263. in Deuteronomy 7

  264. and flick back to

  265. Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  266. Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  267. In Genesis 15,

  268. we read about God's

  269. initial promise

  270. to his people

  271. about the good land,

  272. the promised land,

  273. the beautiful land

  274. that they were going to go to.

  275. But before they get into

  276. this good land,

  277. there's going to be

  278. a long,

  279. long delay.

  280. And we're given the reason

  281. for that delay.

  282. Chapter 15,

  283. verse 16.

  284. God says,

  285. in the fourth generation,

  286. your descendants

  287. will come back here.

  288. That's back to the promised land.

  289. But the reason why

  290. it's going to take so long,

  291. we're told,

  292. is for the sin

  293. of the Amorites

  294. has not yet reached

  295. its full measure.

  296. Go back to Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  297. chapter 7.

  298. You see,

  299. God is displaying

  300. incredible patience

  301. with the Amorites

  302. and it's implied

  303. with all these

  304. other nations too.

  305. God was giving them

  306. four generations.

  307. That's over 400 years

  308. to sort themselves out.

  309. But now the time

  310. has come

  311. and their lives

  312. are no different.

  313. So God punishes them

  314. for their continued

  315. and their persistent sin.

  316. He commands

  317. their complete destruction.

  318. Look at Deuteronomy 7,

    Deuteronomy 7:2

  319. verse 2.

  320. He says,

  321. when the Lord your God

  322. has delivered them

  323. over to you

  324. and when you have

  325. defeated them,

  326. then you must

  327. destroy them

  328. totally.

  329. You see,

  330. sin

  331. is very destructive.

  332. It wrecks

  333. what God

  334. has made beautiful.

  335. It ruins lives

  336. and it breaks

  337. all that is good.

  338. So God

  339. in His response

  340. deals

  341. with these

  342. sinful nations

  343. by destroying them.

  344. and to be sure,

  345. the only way

  346. to be sure

  347. that you have

  348. dealt with sin

  349. is to destroy

  350. the sinner.

  351. Otherwise,

  352. it just keeps

  353. coming back

  354. again and again

  355. and again.

  356. So what God

  357. is doing here

  358. is He's removing

  359. the sinful nations

  360. from the land

  361. so that His people

  362. can live

  363. in a place

  364. that is full

  365. of peace

  366. and prosperity.

  367. In fact,

  368. it must go

  369. further than just that.

  370. They must go

  371. a step further

  372. because God

  373. knows

  374. what a danger

  375. it will be

  376. if the people

  377. are remain,

  378. if the people

  379. are allowed

  380. to stay in the land.

  381. So,

  382. they must

  383. cleanse the land

  384. from those

  385. who persistently

  386. rebel against God.

  387. Look at verse 3

  388. of chapter 7.

  389. He says,

  390. do not intermarry

  391. with them.

  392. Do not give

  393. your daughters

  394. to their sons

  395. or take their daughters

  396. for your sons.

  397. Why?

  398. Verse 4,

  399. for they will

  400. turn your sons

  401. away from following

  402. me to serve

  403. other gods.

  404. In fact,

  405. He tells them

  406. they are to

  407. cleanse the whole

  408. land of anything

  409. that will pull

  410. them away from God.

  411. Verse 5,

  412. this is what

  413. you are to do.

  414. You are to break

  415. down the altars,

  416. smash their sacred

  417. stones,

  418. cut down the

  419. Asherah poles

  420. and burn their

  421. idols in the fire.

  422. For you are a people

  423. holy to the Lord

  424. your God.

  425. You've been rescued

  426. by God.

  427. You now belong

  428. to God.

  429. You've been set

  430. apart for God

  431. to love Him,

  432. to enjoy Him,

  433. to obey Him.

  434. So you must

  435. remove

  436. every possible

  437. thing

  438. that is going

  439. to pull you

  440. away from God.

  441. verse 16,

  442. He says,

  443. you must destroy

  444. all the peoples

  445. the Lord your God

  446. gives over to you.

  447. Do not look on

  448. them with pity

  449. and do not

  450. serve their gods

  451. for that will

  452. be a snare

  453. to you.

  454. They could

  455. entice you

  456. away.

  457. Verse 25,

  458. the images

  459. of their gods

  460. you are to

  461. burn in the fire.

  462. Do not covet

  463. the silver and

  464. gold on them

  465. and do not

  466. take it

  467. for yourselves

  468. or you

  469. will be

  470. ensnared

  471. by it

  472. for it is

  473. detestable

  474. to the Lord

  475. your God.

  476. To leave

  477. any hint

  478. of sin

  479. would be

  480. dangerous.

  481. Like a deadly

  482. cancer,

  483. it would only

  484. grow back

  485. again

  486. and it

  487. would take

  488. over,

  489. ruining

  490. and destroying

  491. and breaking

  492. everything

  493. in its path.

  494. you see,

  495. this is not

  496. about a

  497. God who,

  498. as Dawkins

  499. claims,

  500. is a vindictive,

  501. bloodthirsty,

  502. ethnic cleanser.

  503. This is a

  504. God who

  505. is fair

  506. and just

  507. and is

  508. rightly

  509. angry with

  510. all the

  511. sin

  512. that causes

  513. so much

  514. pain and

  515. damage in

  516. our world.

  517. Let's try

  518. and think

  519. about something

  520. that's been

  521. fresh in our

  522. news this

  523. week.

  524. I'm sure

  525. you've all

  526. heard about

  527. Fiona Doyle,

  528. now an

  529. older lady.

  530. But when she

  531. was a very

  532. young girl,

  533. for ten

  534. consistent

  535. years,

  536. she was

  537. raped and

  538. abused by

  539. her father.

  540. now when

  541. you saw

  542. that item

  543. on the

  544. news,

  545. how did

  546. it make

  547. you feel

  548. when that

  549. happened?

  550. He got

  551. twelve

  552. years,

  553. nine years

  554. of that

  555. was suspended,

  556. another three

  557. years he was

  558. let off on

  559. bail.

  560. Okay,

  561. they went

  562. back to it

  563. and now he's

  564. back,

  565. but still

  566. it doesn't

  567. fit the

  568. crime,

  569. does it?

  570. What does

  571. it make you

  572. feel when

  573. you see

  574. something like

  575. that?

  576. it made

  577. me very

  578. angry and

  579. I'm sure

  580. it made

  581. you very

  582. angry.

  583. You're

  584. wanting

  585. justice,

  586. you want

  587. the innocent

  588. to live

  589. without fear

  590. in peace

  591. and safety

  592. and security

  593. and you

  594. want the

  595. guilty

  596. punished.

  597. Now if

  598. that one

  599. event could

  600. make us

  601. angry,

  602. multiply that

  603. the world

  604. over,

  605. of all the

  606. crimes,

  607. of all the

  608. wars and

  609. all the

  610. violence and

  611. of all the

  612. damage

  613. that is

  614. done to

  615. so many

  616. children and

  617. of all the

  618. injustices that

  619. there are in

  620. the world

  621. and God

  622. sees and

  623. he feels

  624. every single

  625. bit of pain

  626. and now we

  627. can only

  628. begin to

  629. sense

  630. what God

  631. feels

  632. with the

  633. brokenness

  634. and the

  635. hurt and

  636. the damage

  637. that people

  638. do to

  639. one another.

  640. But you

  641. see,

  642. let's not

  643. just be

  644. looking at

  645. other people.

  646. take a

  647. magnifying

  648. glass and

  649. pass it

  650. across your

  651. own heart

  652. and across

  653. our own

  654. lives.

  655. Because we

  656. too have

  657. done and

  658. said things

  659. to people

  660. that has

  661. caused hurt

  662. and damage.

  663. We've broken

  664. relationships.

  665. We've done

  666. things we

  667. shouldn't have

  668. done.

  669. and God

  670. is rightfully

  671. angry at

  672. the things

  673. that we

  674. have done.

  675. You see,

  676. God longs

  677. that we

  678. would all

  679. live in

  680. peace and

  681. prosperity.

  682. God desires

  683. that we

  684. would all

  685. live in a

  686. beautiful and

  687. good land,

  688. a land without

  689. disease and

  690. sickness, a

  691. place where

  692. there's no

  693. evil and

  694. no crime

  695. and no

  696. injustice.

  697. And so

  698. he must

  699. remove all

  700. those who

  701. are intent

  702. on causing

  703. harm.

  704. And he

  705. must remove

  706. all those

  707. who are set

  708. in opposition

  709. to him.

  710. He must

  711. cleanse the

  712. world of

  713. sin.

  714. And the

  715. only way to

  716. get rid of

  717. sin is to

  718. destroy the

  719. sinner.

  720. Now, what

  721. God does

  722. here in

  723. Deuteronomy

  724. is very

  725. specific and

  726. very unique.

  727. It is not

  728. an example

  729. for us or

  730. for anybody

  731. else to go

  732. and do

  733. likewise.

  734. However, this

  735. does show

  736. us that God

  737. takes all

  738. sin seriously

  739. and that just

  740. as he judged

  741. sin then,

  742. so a day

  743. is going to

  744. come when

  745. Jesus Christ

  746. will return

  747. and he

  748. will judge

  749. the whole

  750. world.

  751. Every person

  752. and every

  753. nation,

  754. including you

  755. and me,

  756. will stand

  757. before God

  758. and we'll

  759. be judged.

  760. You see,

  761. the real

  762. question is

  763. not,

  764. why did

  765. God do

  766. this to

  767. the nations?

  768. But why

  769. has God

  770. not done

  771. this to

  772. me?

  773. Because the

  774. reality is

  775. we have all

  776. caused hurt

  777. and upset

  778. to other

  779. people.

  780. We've all

  781. ruined and

  782. wrecked the

  783. good things

  784. that God

  785. has given

  786. us.

  787. So the

  788. question is

  789. not,

  790. why did

  791. God destroy

  792. the nations?

  793. But why

  794. does he not

  795. destroy you

  796. and me?

  797. That's the

  798. real question.

  799. God destroy

  800. some people

  801. is because

  802. some people

  803. are better

  804. than other

  805. people.

  806. Well,

  807. no,

  808. that's the

  809. wrong answer.

  810. Because the

  811. big surprise

  812. in this

  813. chapter is

  814. God's

  815. people are

  816. actually no

  817. different from

  818. the other

  819. nations.

  820. Let's just

  821. have a look

  822. through verses

  823. 7 through

  824. to 8 here.

  825. First,

  826. they were

  827. specially

  828. chosen.

  829. Verse 6,

  830. he says to

  831. them,

  832. for you are

  833. a holy

  834. people to

  835. the Lord

  836. your God.

  837. The Lord

  838. your God

  839. has chosen

  840. you out

  841. of all the

  842. peoples on

  843. the face

  844. of the

  845. earth to

  846. be his

  847. people,

  848. his treasured

  849. possession.

  850. Now,

  851. God could

  852. have chosen

  853. another

  854. nation.

  855. He could

  856. have chosen

  857. the Hivites

  858. or the

  859. Perizzites

  860. instead.

  861. He could

  862. have chosen

  863. more than

  864. one nation.

  865. But God

  866. says,

  867. no,

  868. I choose

  869. you.

  870. Out of

  871. all the

  872. peoples on

  873. the face

  874. of the

  875. earth,

  876. I have

  877. chosen

  878. you to

  879. be my

  880. treasured

  881. possession.

  882. They have

  883. become to

  884. God like

  885. a king's

  886. personal

  887. treasure.

  888. the greatest

  889. possession

  890. that he

  891. has,

  892. that is

  893. beyond

  894. value.

  895. That is

  896. what these

  897. people are

  898. like to

  899. God.

  900. But again,

  901. we ask,

  902. if God

  903. chose them,

  904. then he

  905. must have

  906. seen something

  907. in them

  908. that made

  909. them stand

  910. out as

  911. better and

  912. greater than

  913. all the

  914. rest of

  915. the people.

  916. No.

  917. God does

  918. not choose

  919. us because

  920. of who

  921. we are.

  922. Verse 7,

  923. the Lord

  924. did not

  925. set his

  926. affection on

  927. you and

  928. choose you

  929. because you

  930. were more

  931. numerous than

  932. other peoples.

  933. For you

  934. were the

  935. fewest of

  936. all peoples.

  937. You know,

  938. the way to

  939. assess a

  940. nation's

  941. value in

  942. those times

  943. was by its

  944. size.

  945. The bigger

  946. you were,

  947. the more

  948. powerful you

  949. were,

  950. and the

  951. more respect

  952. you had.

  953. These are

  954. the kinds

  955. of nations

  956. that hold

  957. status and

  958. privilege.

  959. But that

  960. is not

  961. the basis

  962. of his

  963. choice.

  964. He tells

  965. them the

  966. end of

  967. verse 7,

  968. he says,

  969. you were

  970. the fewest

  971. of all

  972. peoples.

  973. In other

  974. words,

  975. you were

  976. a nothing,

  977. you were

  978. a nobody,

  979. in the

  980. world's

  981. eyes you

  982. were

  983. completely

  984. insignificant.

  985. God

  986. does not

  987. choose you

  988. because of

  989. who you

  990. are.

  991. Third,

  992. God chooses

  993. you because

  994. of who

  995. he is.

  996. Verse 8,

  997. but it

  998. was because

  999. the Lord

  1000. loved you

  1001. and kept

  1002. the oath

  1003. he swore

  1004. to your

  1005. forefathers

  1006. that he

  1007. brought you

  1008. out with

  1009. a mighty

  1010. hand and

  1011. redeemed you

  1012. from the

  1013. land of

  1014. slavery,

  1015. from the

  1016. power of

  1017. Pharaoh,

  1018. king of

  1019. Egypt.

  1020. God set

  1021. his affection

  1022. on you.

  1023. The Lord

  1024. chose you

  1025. and he

  1026. made you

  1027. his treasured

  1028. possession

  1029. for the

  1030. simple

  1031. reason

  1032. that he

  1033. loved you.

  1034. God

  1035. loved you

  1036. not because

  1037. of who

  1038. you are

  1039. but because

  1040. of who

  1041. he is.

  1042. If we

  1043. thought of

  1044. it in

  1045. this way,

  1046. if we

  1047. thought of

  1048. all the

  1049. nations

  1050. kind of

  1051. lined up

  1052. before God

  1053. in some

  1054. kind of

  1055. talent

  1056. competition

  1057. and they

  1058. all did

  1059. their party

  1060. piece

  1061. and God

  1062. had to

  1063. pick the

  1064. best one

  1065. to be

  1066. his

  1067. treasured

  1068. possession,

  1069. well there

  1070. was

  1071. nothing

  1072. that

  1073. made

  1074. them

  1075. better

  1076. or

  1077. superior

  1078. or

  1079. greater.

  1080. They were

  1081. no less

  1082. sinful

  1083. than the

  1084. other

  1085. nations.

  1086. They were

  1087. no different

  1088. to the

  1089. other

  1090. nations.

  1091. In fact

  1092. as we

  1093. read through

  1094. the Bible

  1095. we'll see

  1096. we could

  1097. actually make

  1098. the claim

  1099. that they

  1100. were worse

  1101. than the

  1102. other

  1103. nations.

  1104. They

  1105. didn't

  1106. earn

  1107. God's

  1108. love.

  1109. They

  1110. didn't

  1111. deserve

  1112. God's

  1113. love.

  1114. the

  1115. big

  1116. surprise

  1117. is that

  1118. God

  1119. even

  1120. bothered

  1121. to

  1122. love

  1123. them.

  1124. They

  1125. deserve

  1126. to be

  1127. treated

  1128. like the

  1129. rest of

  1130. the

  1131. nations.

  1132. And the

  1133. only

  1134. reason

  1135. why

  1136. they

  1137. are

  1138. not

  1139. destroyed

  1140. like

  1141. the

  1142. other

  1143. nations

  1144. is

  1145. because

  1146. God

  1147. chose

  1148. to

  1149. make

  1150. them

  1151. his

  1152. treasured

  1153. possession.

  1154. Do you

  1155. see what

  1156. God is

  1157. saying

  1158. here?

  1159. the

  1160. only

  1161. way

  1162. to

  1163. escape

  1164. being

  1165. destroyed,

  1166. the

  1167. only

  1168. way

  1169. to

  1170. be

  1171. a

  1172. part

  1173. of

  1174. the

  1175. good

  1176. and

  1177. beautiful

  1178. land

  1179. that

  1180. I

  1181. want

  1182. to

  1183. give

  1184. you

  1185. is

  1186. if

  1187. you

  1188. experience

  1189. my

  1190. grace.

  1191. Don't

  1192. ever

  1193. think

  1194. that you

  1195. can

  1196. escape

  1197. God's

  1198. judgment

  1199. because

  1200. you

  1201. are

  1202. better

  1203. or

  1204. greater

  1205. or

  1206. superior.

  1207. If

  1208. you

  1209. think

  1210. for

  1211. one

  1212. moment

  1213. that

  1214. you

  1215. earn

  1216. God's

  1217. love

  1218. or

  1219. that

  1220. you

  1221. deserve

  1222. God's

  1223. love

  1224. because

  1225. of

  1226. something

  1227. that

  1228. you've

  1229. done

  1230. because

  1231. of

  1232. your

  1233. heritage

  1234. or

  1235. your

  1236. background

  1237. you

  1238. have

  1239. not

  1240. understood

  1241. God.

  1242. Look at

  1243. chapter 8

  1244. verse 17

  1245. you

  1246. may

  1247. say

  1248. to

  1249. yourself

  1250. full

  1251. of

  1252. pride

  1253. as

  1254. it

  1255. were

  1256. my

  1257. power

  1258. and

  1259. the

  1260. strength

  1261. of

  1262. my

  1263. hands

  1264. have

  1265. produced

  1266. this

  1267. wealth

  1268. for

  1269. me

  1270. look

  1271. at

  1272. what

  1273. I

  1274. did

  1275. no

  1276. verse

  1277. 18

  1278. but

  1279. remember

  1280. the

  1281. Lord

  1282. your

  1283. God

  1284. for

  1285. it

  1286. is

  1287. he

  1288. who

  1289. gives

  1290. you

  1291. the

  1292. ability

  1293. to

  1294. produce

  1295. wealth

  1296. and

  1297. so

  1298. confirms

  1299. his

  1300. covenant

  1301. which

  1302. he

  1303. swore

  1304. to

  1305. your

  1306. forefathers

  1307. as

  1308. it

  1309. is

  1310. today

  1311. God's

  1312. people

  1313. only

  1314. get

  1315. what

  1316. they

  1317. get

  1318. because

  1319. God

  1320. loved

  1321. them

  1322. because

  1323. he

  1324. promised

  1325. things

  1326. to

  1327. them

  1328. because

  1329. he

  1330. was

  1331. committed

  1332. to

  1333. them

  1334. and

  1335. it's

  1336. absolutely

  1337. no

  1338. different

  1339. for

  1340. us

  1341. today

  1342. God

  1343. deals

  1344. with

  1345. us

  1346. in

  1347. exactly

  1348. the

  1349. same

  1350. way

  1351. now

  1352. as

  1353. he

  1354. did

  1355. with

  1356. his

  1357. people

  1358. then

  1359. have

  1360. a

  1361. look

  1362. at

  1363. this

  1364. quote

  1365. here

  1366. it

  1367. comes

  1368. from

  1369. 1st

  1370. Corinthians

  1371. chapter

  1372. 1

  1373. Paul

  1374. is

  1375. writing

  1376. to

  1377. the

  1378. church

  1379. in

  1380. Corinth

  1381. and

  1382. he's

  1383. getting

  1384. them

  1385. to

  1386. think

  1387. back

  1388. so

  1389. he

  1390. starts

  1391. off

  1392. he

  1393. says

  1394. brothers

  1395. and

  1396. sisters

  1397. think

  1398. of

  1399. what

  1400. you

  1401. were

  1402. when

  1403. you

  1404. were

  1405. called

  1406. just

  1407. stop

  1408. for

  1409. a

  1410. minute

  1411. there

  1412. think

  1413. about

  1414. it

  1415. when

  1416. God

  1417. chose

  1418. to

  1419. love

  1420. you

  1421. when

  1422. he

  1423. put

  1424. his

  1425. affection

  1426. on

  1427. you

  1428. what

  1429. were

  1430. you

  1431. like

  1432. well

  1433. he

  1434. goes

  1435. on

  1436. not

  1437. many

  1438. of

  1439. you

  1440. were

  1441. wise

  1442. by

  1443. human

  1444. standards

  1445. not

  1446. many

  1447. of

  1448. you

  1449. were

  1450. influential

  1451. not

  1452. many

  1453. of you

  1454. were

  1455. noble

  1456. birth

  1457. in other

  1458. words

  1459. you were

  1460. nobody's

  1461. you were

  1462. nothing's

  1463. you were

  1464. insignificant

  1465. there was

  1466. nothing in

  1467. you that

  1468. attracted me

  1469. to you

  1470. but

  1471. God

  1472. chose

  1473. the

  1474. foolish

  1475. things

  1476. of

  1477. the

  1478. world

  1479. to

  1480. shame

  1481. the

  1482. wise

  1483. God

  1484. chose

  1485. the

  1486. weak

  1487. things

  1488. of

  1489. the

  1490. world

  1491. to

  1492. shame

  1493. the

  1494. strong

  1495. God

  1496. chose

  1497. the

  1498. lowly

  1499. things

  1500. of

  1501. this

  1502. world

  1503. and

  1504. the

  1505. despised

  1506. things

  1507. and the

  1508. things

  1509. that

  1510. are

  1511. not

  1512. to

  1513. nullify

  1514. the

  1515. things

  1516. that

  1517. are

  1518. so

  1519. that

  1520. no

  1521. one

  1522. may

  1523. boast

  1524. before

  1525. him

  1526. the

  1527. only

  1528. reason

  1529. God

  1530. would

  1531. set

  1532. his

  1533. love

  1534. upon

  1535. us

  1536. is

  1537. because

  1538. we're

  1539. foolish

  1540. because

  1541. we're

  1542. weak

  1543. because

  1544. we're

  1545. despised

  1546. because

  1547. we're

  1548. nothing

  1549. you see

  1550. the real

  1551. question

  1552. in all

  1553. of this

  1554. as well

  1555. is

  1556. it's

  1557. not

  1558. why

  1559. did

  1560. God

  1561. choose

  1562. this

  1563. nation

  1564. over

  1565. that

  1566. nation

  1567. we get

  1568. our

  1569. minds

  1570. bogged

  1571. with

  1572. that

  1573. one

  1574. why

  1575. did

  1576. God

  1577. choose

  1578. this

  1579. one

  1580. and

  1581. not

  1582. that

  1583. one

  1584. here's

  1585. the

  1586. real

  1587. question

  1588. why

  1589. would

  1590. God

  1591. bother

  1592. to

  1593. choose

  1594. you

  1595. or

  1596. me

  1597. there

  1598. is

  1599. nothing

  1600. in

  1601. us

  1602. to

  1603. attract

  1604. us

  1605. to

  1606. God

  1607. he

  1608. simply

  1609. loves

  1610. us

  1611. because

  1612. he

  1613. loves

  1614. us

  1615. and

  1616. he

  1617. wants

  1618. to

  1619. shower

  1620. us

  1621. with

  1622. his

  1623. blessings

  1624. it's

  1625. unconditional

  1626. it's

  1627. based

  1628. on

  1629. who

  1630. he

  1631. is

  1632. not

  1633. what

  1634. I

  1635. am

  1636. so

  1637. third

  1638. then

  1639. what's

  1640. what's

  1641. it

  1642. going

  1643. to

  1644. be

  1645. for

  1646. us

  1647. is

  1648. it

  1649. going

  1650. to

  1651. be

  1652. God's

  1653. terrible

  1654. judgment

  1655. or

  1656. is

  1657. it

  1658. going

  1659. to

  1660. be

  1661. God's

  1662. incredible

  1663. grace

  1664. well look

  1665. at chapter

  1666. 7

  1667. verse 9

  1668. know

  1669. therefore

  1670. that the

  1671. Lord

  1672. your

  1673. God

  1674. is

  1675. God

  1676. he

  1677. is

  1678. a

  1679. faithful

  1680. God

  1681. keeping

  1682. his

  1683. covenant

  1684. of

  1685. love

  1686. to

  1687. a

  1688. thousand

  1689. generations

  1690. of

  1691. those

  1692. who

  1693. love

  1694. him

  1695. and

  1696. keep

  1697. his

  1698. commands

  1699. but

  1700. those

  1701. who

  1702. hate

  1703. him

  1704. he

  1705. will

  1706. repay

  1707. to

  1708. their

  1709. face

  1710. by

  1711. destruction

  1712. he

  1713. will

  1714. not

  1715. be

  1716. slow

  1717. to

  1718. repay

  1719. to

  1720. their

  1721. face

  1722. those

  1723. who

  1724. hate

  1725. him

  1726. now

  1727. where

  1728. does

  1729. that

  1730. put

  1731. us

  1732. the

  1733. point

  1734. is

  1735. we

  1736. all

  1737. deserve

  1738. the

  1739. judgment

  1740. we

  1741. all

  1742. deserve

  1743. to

  1744. be

  1745. destroyed

  1746. not

  1747. one

  1748. of

  1749. us

  1750. manages

  1751. to

  1752. keep

  1753. his

  1754. commandments

  1755. and

  1756. love

  1757. him

  1758. wholeheartedly

  1759. the

  1760. reality

  1761. is

  1762. we

  1763. all

  1764. need

  1765. his

  1766. grace

  1767. and

  1768. we

  1769. all

  1770. long

  1771. for

  1772. this

  1773. promised

  1774. good

  1775. land

  1776. that

  1777. is

  1778. beautiful

  1779. and

  1780. good

  1781. without

  1782. evil

  1783. and

  1784. injustice

  1785. and

  1786. sin

  1787. and

  1788. crime

  1789. so

  1790. how

  1791. is

  1792. it

  1793. possible

  1794. for

  1795. us

  1796. to

  1797. know

  1798. God's

  1799. grace

  1800. day

  1801. to

  1802. day

  1803. but

  1804. not

  1805. his

  1806. judgment

  1807. well

  1808. two

  1809. things

  1810. first

  1811. we

  1812. must

  1813. run

  1814. to

  1815. Christ

  1816. you

  1817. see

  1818. as we

  1819. follow

  1820. the

  1821. story

  1822. through

  1823. we

  1824. come

  1825. to

  1826. this

  1827. climax

  1828. where

  1829. God

  1830. would

  1831. put

  1832. his

  1833. judgment

  1834. and

  1835. his

  1836. grace

  1837. side

  1838. by

  1839. side

  1840. on

  1841. display

  1842. for

  1843. the

  1844. world

  1845. to

  1846. see

  1847. before

  1848. the

  1849. nations

  1850. and

  1851. before

  1852. all

  1853. the

  1854. people

  1855. God

  1856. would

  1857. demonstrate

  1858. his

  1859. terrible

  1860. judgment

  1861. and

  1862. his

  1863. incredible

  1864. grace

  1865. all

  1866. in

  1867. one

  1868. combined

  1869. concise

  1870. moment

  1871. take a

  1872. look at

  1873. the cross

  1874. in your

  1875. mind's

  1876. eye

  1877. Jesus

  1878. and his

  1879. death

  1880. what do

  1881. we see

  1882. going on

  1883. on the

  1884. cross

  1885. we see a

  1886. man being

  1887. beaten

  1888. we see

  1889. somebody being

  1890. spat on

  1891. somebody being

  1892. punched

  1893. whipped

  1894. and scourged

  1895. we see a

  1896. man being

  1897. torn

  1898. his back

  1899. lacerated

  1900. ripped apart

  1901. we see

  1902. somebody being

  1903. nailed

  1904. to a

  1905. cross

  1906. we see

  1907. someone with

  1908. a spear

  1909. being thrust

  1910. up into

  1911. their side

  1912. what's going

  1913. on with this

  1914. violent

  1915. image

  1916. Jesus

  1917. is being

  1918. destroyed

  1919. physically

  1920. and

  1921. spiritually

  1922. for us

  1923. the

  1924. judgment

  1925. of God

  1926. that should

  1927. rain down

  1928. on all

  1929. the nations

  1930. and on

  1931. all people

  1932. the judgment

  1933. of God

  1934. that should

  1935. be for

  1936. my sin

  1937. and your

  1938. sin

  1939. is falling

  1940. on God

  1941. himself

  1942. and so

  1943. the cross

  1944. stands before

  1945. all nations

  1946. of the world

  1947. today

  1948. before all

  1949. peoples

  1950. no matter

  1951. what nation

  1952. what people

  1953. group

  1954. what tribe

  1955. what language

  1956. it is

  1957. the cross

  1958. stands before

  1959. it all

  1960. to say

  1961. look

  1962. God took

  1963. the terrible

  1964. judgment

  1965. that we

  1966. all deserve

  1967. for himself

  1968. why

  1969. why would

  1970. he do

  1971. it

  1972. so that

  1973. we might

  1974. experience

  1975. his

  1976. incredible

  1977. grace

  1978. Jesus

  1979. didn't

  1980. die for

  1981. you

  1982. because

  1983. there

  1984. was

  1985. something

  1986. beautiful

  1987. or good

  1988. about

  1989. you

  1990. God

  1991. didn't

  1992. set his

  1993. affection

  1994. on you

  1995. because

  1996. you were

  1997. better

  1998. or greater

  1999. to your

  2000. neighbor

  2001. or to the

  2002. person

  2003. in some

  2004. other

  2005. country

  2006. God

  2007. died for

  2008. you

  2009. because

  2010. he loved

  2011. you

  2012. God

  2013. was

  2014. destroyed

  2015. for you

  2016. broken

  2017. for you

  2018. so that

  2019. he could

  2020. redeem

  2021. you

  2022. and bring

  2023. you into

  2024. the ultimate

  2025. land

  2026. the new

  2027. creation

  2028. to bring

  2029. you into

  2030. the home

  2031. and the place

  2032. that we

  2033. all long

  2034. for

  2035. a place

  2036. where there's

  2037. no sin

  2038. and no evil

  2039. and no

  2040. sickness

  2041. and no

  2042. disease

  2043. and no

  2044. abuse

  2045. and no

  2046. rape

  2047. and no

  2048. injustice

  2049. and no

  2050. crime

  2051. to bring

  2052. you into

  2053. the land

  2054. that is

  2055. beautiful

  2056. and good

  2057. of protection

  2058. and blessing

  2059. he did it

  2060. so that you

  2061. would experience

  2062. his grace

  2063. so run

  2064. to Christ

  2065. every day

  2066. run to his

  2067. cross

  2068. and enjoy

  2069. his grace

  2070. but second

  2071. and we finish

  2072. with this

  2073. we must

  2074. also

  2075. be ruthless

  2076. with sin

  2077. if we

  2078. have run

  2079. to Christ

  2080. and if we

  2081. see how

  2082. he was

  2083. destroyed

  2084. for our

  2085. sin

  2086. and what

  2087. he's bringing

  2088. us to

  2089. then we

  2090. will want

  2091. to destroy

  2092. the sin

  2093. in our

  2094. lives

  2095. not to

  2096. look

  2097. outwards

  2098. at other

  2099. people

  2100. turn your

  2101. eyes around

  2102. and look

  2103. into our

  2104. own

  2105. hearts

  2106. we

  2107. will want

  2108. to root

  2109. out

  2110. the

  2111. destructive

  2112. patterns

  2113. and the

  2114. destructive

  2115. behaviours

  2116. that cause

  2117. so much

  2118. hurt

  2119. to other

  2120. people

  2121. and to

  2122. ourselves

  2123. and to

  2124. God

  2125. we need

  2126. to be

  2127. ruthless

  2128. with sin

  2129. we need

  2130. to clean

  2131. out

  2132. the

  2133. attitudes

  2134. in our

  2135. lives

  2136. where we

  2137. have the

  2138. mask on

  2139. and we

  2140. pretend

  2141. that

  2142. well no

  2143. it's

  2144. actually

  2145. all

  2146. okay

  2147. but it

  2148. just keeps

  2149. on growing

  2150. back

  2151. wrecking

  2152. relationships

  2153. and breaking

  2154. the good

  2155. things that

  2156. God gives

  2157. to us

  2158. so we

  2159. must run

  2160. to Christ

  2161. run to

  2162. his cross

  2163. experience

  2164. his grace

  2165. day to

  2166. day and

  2167. allow the

  2168. cleansing

  2169. work of

  2170. the Holy

  2171. Spirit

  2172. to be

  2173. at work

  2174. in our

  2175. own lives

  2176. in our

  2177. own

  2178. hearts

  2179. dealing

  2180. with the

  2181. sin that

  2182. is there

  2183. changing

  2184. us and

  2185. transforming

  2186. us

  2187. removing

  2188. our

  2189. hearts

  2190. of sin

  2191. and instead

  2192. giving us

  2193. a heart

  2194. of love

  2195. for this

  2196. is what

  2197. God calls

  2198. us to

  2199. run to

  2200. Christ

  2201. and be

  2202. ruthless

  2203. with the

  2204. sin in

  2205. our lives

  2206. and

  2207. experience

  2208. his

  2209. incredible

  2210. grace

  2211. day to

  2212. day

  2213. let's

  2214. pray

  2215. I'm just

  2216. going to

  2217. read a

  2218. poem

  2219. you can

  2220. meditate

  2221. on the

  2222. words

  2223. as we

  2224. just

  2225. listen

  2226. i saw

  2227. one

  2228. hanging

  2229. on a

  2230. tree

  2231. in

  2232. agony

  2233. and

  2234. blood

  2235. he

  2236. fixed

  2237. his

  2238. loving

  2239. eyes

  2240. on

  2241. me

  2242. as

  2243. near

  2244. his

  2245. cross

  2246. i

  2247. stood

2248. my conscience felt and owned the guilt

2249. and plunged me in despair

  2250. I saw my sins

  2251. his blood had spilt

2252. and helped to nail him there

2253. a second look he gave which said

  2254. I freely all forgive

2255. this blood is for thy ransom paid

2256. I die that thou might live

2257. thus while his death my sin displays

2258. in all its blackest hue

2259. such is the mystery of grace

2260. it seals my pardon too

2261. oh can it be upon a tree

2262. the saviour died for me

  2263. my soul is thrilled

  2264. my heart is filled

2265. to think he died for me

  2266. father thank you

2267. that you have not destroyed us as we deserve

2268. but that Christ was destroyed for us

  2269. that we might know

  2270. your incredible grace

  2271. every day

2272. that we might know you and enjoy you

2273. and we pray that this would sink deep into our hearts

2274. and that we would bring to the nations

2275. the seriousness of your judgment

  2276. but your incredible grace

2277. and please would you empower us

  2278. by your holy spirit

2279. to go on rooting out the sin in our own lives

2280. please continue to cleanse us

2281. so that we become more beautiful

2282. that we become more like Christ

2283. so that the broken image

  2284. would be restored

2285. so that we reflect God

  2286. in all his beauty

  2287. and all his kindness

  2288. and all his goodness

2289. please help us we pray

2290. we thank you for your mercy

2291. your grace and your love

  2292. in Jesus name

  2293. Amen

  2294. Amen

  2295. Amen
