  1. This is Deuteronomy, chapter 15, verses 1 to 11, and that's on page 194, if you've got one of these red Bibles.

    Deuteronomy 15:1–11

  2. At the end of every seven years, you must cancel debts. This is how it is to be done.

  3. Every creditor shall cancel the loan he has made to his fellow Israelites.

  4. He shall not require payment from his fellow Israelite or brother, because the Lord's time for cancelling debts has been proclaimed.

  5. You may require payment from a foreigner, but you must cancel any debt your brother owes you.

  6. However, there should be no poor among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you.

  7. If only you fully obey the Lord your God, and are careful to follow all these commands I am giving you today.

  8. For the Lord your God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations, but will borrow from none.

  9. You will rule over many nations, but none will rule over you.

  10. If there is a poor man among you, or among your brothers, in any of the towns in the land that the Lord your God has given you,

  11. do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted towards your poor brother.

  12. Rather, be open-handed and freely lend him whatever he needs.

  13. Be careful not to harbour this wicked thought.

  14. The seventh year, the year for cancelling debts is near,

  15. so that you do not show ill-will towards your needy brother and give him nothing.

  16. He may then appeal to the Lord against you, and you will be found guilty of sin.

  17. Give generously to him, and do so without a grudging heart.

  18. Then, because of this, the Lord your God will bless you in all your work, and in everything you put your hand to.

  19. There will always be poor people in the land.

  20. Therefore, I command you to be open-handed towards your brothers, and towards the poor and needy in your land.

  21. Thanks very much, Alex.

  22. Well, we're making our way through Deuteronomy.

  23. Don't fear, we're not going to go through every single law.

  24. While I'm away, there'll be others speaking, and they're going to be jumping right the way up to chapter 26 and 27.

  25. But they're great things to read, and we're going to be looking at one particular law, one particular command.

  26. And this morning, as the people moved into the land, the promised land, so God gave them laws, which they were to live with.

  27. Let's ask for God's help to see how this applies to us today.

  28. Father, we thank you for this amazing book.

  29. And we come afresh to hear of your amazing grace.

  30. We are needy people.

  31. In many ways, we are poor.

  32. And we need you to fill us with your grace, to enrich us, so that we may know you better.

  33. And we pray that by your Holy Spirit, you would help us to know you better today.

  34. And we ask this in Jesus' name.

  35. Amen.

  36. A pastor, writing in a book, commented on an article that he had been reading.

  37. The heading on one side of the page read this.

  38. First Baptist Church celebrates new $23 million building.

  39. And an article followed underneath, detailing the wonderful interior, the marble, and the stained glass windows.

  40. Opposite, on the other side of the page, was another heading.

  41. Baptist relief helps Sudanese refugees.

  42. And the article described how 350,000 refugees in Western Sudan were dying from malnutrition.

  43. At the end of that article was this.

  44. Baptists have raised $5,000 to send to refugees in Western Sudan.

  45. I hope your reaction is the same as mine.

  46. But let's not be pointing the finger.

  47. What is our response to the poor?

  48. Whether in other lands far away, or increasingly so, the poor in our own country who are facing difficult economic times.

  49. Well, three things we're going to look at from this section here.

  50. First, God's love for the poor.

  51. God's love for the poor is unmistakable.

  52. Chapter 15, verse 4, we're told that there should be no poor among you.

  53. That meant whether you were local or somebody from outside, there was to be no poor among you.

  54. But, look down at verse 11.

  55. It tells us there that there will always be poor people in the land.

  56. So which is it?

  57. Well, it's not a contradiction.

  58. Rather, this is God expressing his heart's desire that poverty be completely removed.

  59. However, the reality is there will always be people who are poor.

  60. And people become poor through a number of different ways.

  61. Either through the oppression of others, like greedy multinationals who operate sweatshops to meet the demands of cheap goods.

  62. It could be the effects of natural disasters like flooding or drought that ruins crops or destroys businesses.

  63. Or it could be the moral failure of ourselves.

  64. Just pure laziness, poor choices and selfish living.

  65. All of these things and any combination of them can cause poverty.

  66. But God's desire, his response is that poverty is to be eradicated.

  67. Because this is the kind of God that he is.

  68. Look at how God describes himself in chapter 10, verse 17.

  69. Chapter 10, verse 17.

  70. Chapter 10, verse 17.

  71. For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.

  72. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow and loves the alien, the outsider, giving him food and clothing.

  73. And you are to love those who are outsiders.

  74. For you yourselves were outsiders in Egypt.

  75. Look, he's reminding them.

  76. You were once poor and enslaved in Egypt, in captivity.

  77. But I released you from poverty.

  78. And I have brought you into a good and a prosperous land full of plenty.

  79. You've experienced God's generous and gracious love.

  80. Therefore, you also must display this same gracious and generous love to the poor who are around you.

  81. And of course, those who are considered the most poor, as it says there in verse 18, they were the orphan, the widow, the refugee.

  82. These were people who had no land or property.

  83. Therefore, they had no means of sustaining themselves.

  84. And if we are in any doubt at all as to God's concern for the poor, listen to this from Deuteronomy 27, verse 19.

    Deuteronomy 27:19

  85. Let me read it to you.

  86. Cursed is the man who withholds justice from the alien, the fatherless or the widow.

  87. Then all the people shall say, Amen.

  88. You see, God loves the poor.

  89. And his desire is quite clear to eradicate all poverty.

  90. But second, God's grace in action or God's grace in our life.

  91. God's love for the poor is expressed through the commands that he gives to his people.

  92. In other words, if God's people begin to obey God's law, so God's grace is seen in action.

  93. So let's look at chapter 15, verse 1 of Deuteronomy.

  94. At the end of every seven years, you must cancel debts.

  95. Now, I think Ireland knows all about debt, don't we?

  96. And most of us have debt.

  97. We've got a mortgage or some other kind of loan.

  98. And we all know that if you're not able to pay off your debts, well, it can lead to terrible poverty.

  99. And that's what we see within our own country at the minute.

  100. Well, through the law that God offered to, or through God's law,

  101. he offered grace to those who found themselves in poverty.

  102. He provided a way out, as it were.

  103. Let's read verse 1 again.

  104. At the end of seven years, you must cancel debts.

  105. This is how it is to be done.

  106. Every creditor shall cancel the loan he has made to his fellow Israelite.

  107. He shall not require payment from his fellow Israelite or brother,

  108. because the Lord's time for cancelling debts has been proclaimed.

  109. You see, when God's people moved into the Promised Land,

  110. every tribe, every clan, every family was allotted a piece of ground for their provision.

  111. Everybody had their own little allotment, as it were.

  112. A place where they could keep their cattle to graze, and they could grow a few veg.

  113. Now, as the years passed, some did very well, while others, for various reasons,

  114. maybe they were lazy and they didn't dig their garden very well,

  115. and they had to take out a loan, which left them in terrible debt.

  116. And, of course, the idea was that over the years they would try and pay back that loan,

  117. as they were able.

  118. But if they weren't able to pay back that loan,

  119. the law said that every seventh year, the loan was to be cancelled.

  120. The debt was to be written off.

  121. And the reason?

  122. Because, at the end of verse 2,

  123. the Lord's time for cancelling debts has been proclaimed.

  124. So God is saying, look, I am the God who provides a way for you.

  125. I am the God who cares for the poor and will release them from poverty.

  126. You see, this debt, or the cancelling of debts,

  127. was provided for each family so that they would have a fresh start,

  128. a new beginning.

  129. It meant that the slate was completely wiped clean.

  130. In fact, the law also stated that every 49 years,

  131. it was the year of the Jubilee.

  132. And that meant that every piece of land that had been passed on to other people

  133. because of debts had to be given back to the original landowner.

  134. So God's law was put in place to give the people a fresh start.

  135. Now, could you imagine if every seven years

  136. you had a visit from your bank manager

  137. coming to your house to tell you that

  138. all debts have been cancelled,

  139. whether you were at the Ulster Bank or whoever it is,

  140. could you imagine?

  141. What a joy!

  142. What a relief!

  143. The sense of freedom,

  144. the weight that had been tying you down for so long,

  145. has now been lifted,

  146. and poverty is no longer a burden to carry.

  147. You see, God's law obeyed

  148. with God's grace in action.

  149. It was really quite radical.

  150. And no other nation had these kinds of laws.

  151. The other nations that surrounded Israel

  152. looked to them and said,

  153. Wow!

  154. What an amazing nation!

  155. What a God who would provide these kinds of laws!

  156. We don't have anything like this.

  157. For everybody else,

  158. it was, well, if you got into poverty,

  159. well, that was your own fault.

  160. If you were poor,

  161. well, the gods must be angry at what you had done,

  162. and they've cursed you.

  163. But for God's people,

  164. he was providing a means for a fresh start.

  165. God was teaching them this very simple lesson.

  166. I am the God who cancels debts,

  167. wipes the slate clean,

  168. and releases you from poverty.

  169. Well, you think,

  170. Wow!

  171. I'm going to try this out tomorrow.

  172. Hmm?

  173. But you know what?

  174. We're going to end up in all kinds of trouble

  175. if we try and apply this directly.

  176. If you went down to your bank manager tomorrow

  177. and you opened up before him Deuteronomy 15,

  178. Mr. Manager, or Miss Manager,

  179. it's the seventh year.

  180. Cancel my debts!

  181. What would they say to you?

  182. Well, we must remember,

  183. these laws were given

  184. to a particular people

  185. in a particular place.

  186. We're not Israelites, are we?

  187. Anybody here an Israelite?

  188. Didn't think so.

  189. They were living under an old covenant.

  190. We live under a new covenant.

  191. And I don't think anybody here

  192. has been allotted a particular piece of land by God,

  193. have you?

  194. Your house,

  195. did God give you that?

  196. Did he say,

  197. this is where you must live?

  198. You see,

  199. it would be wrong

  200. to expect these laws

  201. to function in exactly the same way today.

  202. However,

  203. as we have seen,

  204. these laws are all about

  205. God's grace in action.

  206. That God does love the poor

  207. and it is God's desire

  208. to eradicate poverty.

  209. well,

  210. that's exactly

  211. what God has done for us

  212. through his son,

  213. Jesus Christ.

  214. We're going to come back to Deuteronomy

  215. and see how it does apply,

  216. more so in a minute,

  217. but for now,

  218. go forward to

  219. Luke's Gospel,

  220. chapter 4.

  221. Luke's Gospel,

  222. chapter 4.

  223. And verse 20,

  224. well,

  225. sorry,

  226. verse 16.

  227. Luke's Gospel,

  228. chapter 4,

  229. verse 16.

  230. Let's read Luke 4,

    Luke 4:16

  231. verse 16.

  232. Jesus went to Nazareth

  233. where he had been brought up

  234. and on the Sabbath day

  235. he went into the synagogue

  236. as was his custom.

  237. And he stood up to read,

  238. the scroll of the prophet Isaiah

  239. was handed to him.

  240. Now,

  241. the prophets,

  242. people like Isaiah

  243. and Jeremiah

  244. and others,

  245. everything that they said

  246. was really a repeat

  247. or an application

  248. of what God's law

  249. had said.

  250. It was a reminder

  251. to the people

  252. of God's law.

  253. So,

  254. Jesus,

  255. the rest of verse 17,

  256. unrolling the scroll

  257. of Isaiah,

  258. he found the place

  259. where it is written.

  260. The Spirit of the Lord

  261. is on me

  262. because he has anointed me

  263. to preach good news

  264. to the poor.

  265. He has sent me

  266. to proclaim freedom

  267. for the prisoners

  268. and recovery of sight

  269. for the blind,

  270. to release the oppressed,

  271. to proclaim the year

  272. of the Lord's favour.

  273. Well,

  274. that's what we've just read

  275. in Deuteronomy,

  276. isn't it?

  277. Verse 19 there,

  278. the Lord's time

  279. for cancelling debts

  280. has been proclaimed.

  281. Let's read verse 20,

  282. then Jesus rolled up

  283. the scroll,

  284. he gave it back

  285. to the attendant

  286. and sat down.

  287. The eyes of everyone

  288. in the synagogue

  289. were fastened on him

  290. and he began

  291. by saying to them,

  292. today,

  293. this scripture

  294. is fulfilled

  295. in your hearing.

  296. You see,

  297. as Jesus read

  298. from the prophet Isaiah,

  299. proclaiming the year

  300. of the Lord's favour,

  301. Jesus is proclaiming

  302. to the people

  303. who are listening to them

  304. and to us today

  305. as we read it,

  306. Jesus is saying to us,

  307. you know the seventh year

  308. that you all long for?

  309. That seventh year

  310. is me.

  311. I am the one

  312. who has come

  313. to cancel your debts.

  314. I am the one

  315. who has come

  316. to give you

  317. and your families

  318. a fresh start.

  319. I am the God

  320. who provides you

  321. the new beginning

  322. that you all

  323. so long for

  324. and desire.

  325. I am the one

  326. who wipes

  327. the slate clean.

  328. It is me

  329. who is going

  330. to release you

  331. from poverty.

  332. The year

  333. of cancelling

  334. debts,

  335. it is me.

  336. However,

  337. with Jesus,

  338. this poverty

  339. is no longer

  340. confined to

  341. material poverty.

  342. It is about

  343. spiritual poverty.

  344. He came to preach

  345. good news

  346. to the poor.

  347. Yes,

  348. Jesus was concerned

  349. for people's

  350. material

  351. and temporary

  352. needs,

  353. but his greatest

  354. concern was

  355. people's

  356. spiritual

  357. and eternal

  358. needs.

  359. For God

  360. loves people

  361. like you

  362. and me,

  363. people who

  364. are truly

  365. poor,

  366. people who

  367. are weighed

  368. down by the

  369. debt of sin,

  370. who are crippled

  371. by our guilt

  372. and our shame

  373. from the past

  374. and from the

  375. present,

  376. that we carry

  377. with us,

  378. crippling us

  379. so that we

  380. cannot live life

  381. the way it's

  382. meant to.

  383. And the

  384. ultimate expression

  385. of God's love

  386. for the poor

  387. was to come

  388. to people

  389. who are poor

  390. like us.

  391. God was not

  392. so immune

  393. from us,

  394. but he actually

  395. entered into

  396. this world

  397. through his

  398. son Jesus

  399. Christ for

  400. people like

  401. you and me.

  402. Jesus came

  403. to take

  404. our debt,

  405. to take

  406. our sin

  407. from past,

  408. the present

  409. and the future,

  410. to eradicate

  411. it once

  412. and for all,

  413. to wipe

  414. it away

  415. so that it

  416. would never

  417. be a burden

  418. to carry

  419. ever again,

  420. to wipe

  421. the slate

  422. clean

  423. and to give

  424. us the fresh

  425. start

  426. that every

  427. one of us

  428. needs

  429. every single

  430. day.

  431. you see,

  432. as Christ

  433. would hang

  434. on the

  435. cross,

  436. he was

  437. proclaiming

  438. to the

  439. world

  440. that through

  441. his death

  442. now is

  443. the day

  444. of the

  445. Lord's

  446. favour,

  447. that all

  448. sin debts,

  449. past,

  450. present and

  451. future,

  452. are cancelled

  453. here through

  454. Jesus Christ.

  455. It's only

  456. through the

  457. gospel,

  458. through the

  459. good news

  460. of Jesus,

  461. that our

  462. spiritual

  463. poverty

  464. is completely

  465. ended

  466. and we

  467. have been

  468. set free

  469. to live

  470. a new

  471. kind of

  472. life

  473. with him.

  474. That's

  475. where we

  476. must start

  477. with Deuteronomy

  478. 15.

  479. This is

  480. where it

  481. is pointing

  482. to and

  483. where it

  484. leads us

  485. to and

  486. we must

  487. come back

  488. to the

  489. cross

  490. every day

  491. as people

  492. who are

  493. poor

  494. needing

  495. to know

  496. that fresh

  497. start

  498. and the

  499. forgiveness

  500. that he

  501. alone

  502. can bring.

  503. Well,

  504. you say

  505. that is

  506. good news

  507. and in

  508. some ways

  509. that should

  510. be sufficient

  511. in itself

  512. but what

  513. about those

  514. who are

  515. in poverty

  516. materially?

  517. What about

  518. them?

  519. Does God

  520. not care

  521. about that?

  522. Well,

  523. thirdly,

  524. God's

  525. command

  526. to the

  527. church.

  528. You see,

  529. if we

  530. have been

  531. released

  532. from

  533. spiritual

  534. poverty,

  535. then we

  536. will want

  537. to see

  538. others

  539. released

  540. from

  541. material

  542. poverty.

  543. Loving

  544. the poor

  545. and giving

  546. to the

  547. poor

  548. is a

  549. crucial

  550. sign

  551. that we

  552. actually

  553. believe

  554. the

  555. gospel.

  556. If we

  557. say we

  558. believe it

  559. and we

  560. say I'm

  561. a

  562. Christian,

  563. then the

  564. sign that

  565. you are

  566. a Christian

  567. is your

  568. love for

  569. the poor

  570. and giving

  571. to the

  572. poor.

  573. two

  574. things.

  575. First,

  576. open-handed,

  577. not

  578. hard-hearted.

  579. Go back

  580. to

  581. Deuteronomy

  582. 15.

  583. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 15:7

  584. 15,

  585. verse 7.

  586. If there

  587. is a

  588. poor man

  589. among

  590. your

  591. brothers

  592. in any

  593. of the

  594. towns

  595. of the

  596. land

  597. that the

  598. Lord

  599. your

  600. God

  601. is

  602. giving

  603. you,

  604. do

  605. not

  606. be

  607. hard-hearted

  608. or

  609. tight-fisted

  610. towards

  611. your

  612. poor

  613. brother.

  614. rather be

  615. open-handed

  616. and freely

  617. lend him

  618. whatever he

  619. needs.

  620. You see,

  621. a closed

  622. hand

  623. is a sign

  624. of a

  625. hard heart.

  626. If you

  627. know someone

  628. who is in

  629. need,

  630. perhaps they're

  631. struggling to

  632. pay their

  633. bills.

  634. Maybe they

  635. cannot provide

  636. for their

  637. family

  638. adequately.

  639. And you

  640. know what

  641. that need

  642. is and

  643. you do

  644. nothing

  645. about it.

  646. It's just

  647. a reflection

  648. of your

  649. own heart.

  650. It's a

  651. sign that

  652. you are

  653. still in

  654. spiritual

  655. poverty

  656. and have

  657. never

  658. experienced

  659. the fresh

  660. start that

  661. Jesus gives.

  662. Alternatively,

  663. if you

  664. respond to

  665. the material

  666. needs of

  667. others,

  668. then that

  669. is a

  670. sign.

  671. It's an

  672. outworking

  673. of your

  674. genuine

  675. belief in

  676. the gospel.

  677. It's a

  678. sign that

  679. yes,

  680. you have

  681. been to

  682. the cross

  683. and you

  684. have

  685. experienced

  686. God's

  687. grace in

  688. your life.

  689. Listen to

  690. how the

  691. early church

  692. obeyed

  693. God's law

  694. from

  695. Deuteronomy

  696. 15 and

  697. demonstrated

  698. their

  699. open-handedness

  700. to one

  701. another.

  702. These are

  703. familiar

  704. words.

  705. I read

  706. them from

  707. Acts 4

    Acts 4:34

  708. verse 34.

  709. This is

  710. what it

  711. says of

  712. the believers

  713. there and

  714. this is

  715. paralleled

  716. from

  717. Deuteronomy

  718. 15.

  719. There were

  720. no needy

  721. persons

  722. among them

  723. for from

  724. time to

  725. time those

  726. who owned

  727. lands or

  728. houses sold

  729. them,

  730. brought the

  731. money from

  732. the sales,

  733. put it at

  734. the apostles'

  735. feet and

  736. it was

  737. distributed

  738. to anyone

  739. as he

  740. had need.

  741. What a

  742. radical way

  743. to live.

  744. Nobody

  745. was in

  746. need

  747. among them.

  748. Well, we

  749. as a church

  750. have sought

  751. to do

  752. something about

  753. that.

  754. We have

  755. what we

  756. call a

  757. ministry of

  758. mercy,

  759. something that

  760. we're seeking

  761. to develop.

  762. There is

  763. some funds

  764. available and

  765. it would be

  766. great if that

  767. were increased

  768. to be able

  769. to give

  770. to those

  771. who are

  772. in need.

  773. So if you

  774. know people

  775. within the

  776. family of

  777. this church

  778. who are

  779. in need,

  780. maybe there's

  781. people who

  782. you work

  783. with or

  784. within your

  785. neighbourhood

  786. or friends

  787. who are

  788. in need.

  789. What better

  790. way to

  791. express and

  792. to show

  793. the grace

  794. of God

  795. by giving

  796. them

  797. something that

  798. would help?

  799. It may be

  800. small,

  801. but it

  802. is a sign

  803. of the

  804. grace of

  805. God.

  806. And if

  807. you want

  808. to think

  809. through that

  810. more,

  811. you can

  812. speak to

  813. Alex or

  814. to Jan

  815. who are

  816. looking after

  817. that on

  818. behalf of

  819. the whole

  820. church.

  821. Open-handed,

  822. not hard-hearted,

  823. a sign that

  824. we have

  825. experienced

  826. God's grace

  827. in our own

  828. lives.

  829. second,

  830. generously

  831. and not

  832. grudgingly

  833. in terms

  834. of our

  835. giving.

  836. We need

  837. to be

  838. careful that

  839. we don't

  840. have a

  841. sinful

  842. attitude

  843. towards

  844. the poor.

  845. Look at

  846. verse 9

  847. of Deuteronomy

  848. 15.

  849. Be careful

  850. not to

  851. harbour

  852. this wicked

  853. thought.

  854. The

  855. seventh

  856. year,

  857. the year

  858. for

  859. cancelling

  860. debts

  861. is near.

  862. so that

  863. you do

  864. not show

  865. ill will

  866. towards

  867. your

  868. needy

  869. brother

  870. and

  871. give

  872. him

  873. nothing.

  874. You see,

  875. the law

  876. was something

  877. like this.

  878. If somebody

  879. came looking

  880. for financial

  881. help

  882. in year

  883. six,

  884. the reality

  885. is they

  886. would have

  887. very little

  888. paid back

  889. by year

  890. seven.

  891. One year

  892. is not a

  893. long time

  894. to be paying

  895. back your

  896. loan.

  897. So the

  898. temptation

  899. would be

  900. that if

  901. you were

  902. somebody

  903. who had

  904. plenty

  905. and somebody

  906. came along

  907. in year

  908. six and

  909. said,

  910. you know,

  911. I wonder

  912. if I could

  913. just have

  914. a loan

  915. here.

  916. Well,

  917. the temptation

  918. would be

  919. to say,

  920. well,

  921. year seven

  922. is next

  923. year.

  924. I mean,

  925. how am I

  926. ever going

  927. to get

  928. the money

  929. back in

  930. a year's

  931. time?

  932. The temptation

  933. would be

  934. to think,

  935. well,

  936. no,

  937. you've got

  938. yourself

  939. in a

  940. mess.

  941. You

  942. sort

  943. yourself

  944. out.

  945. Why

  946. should I

  947. take the

  948. hit for

  949. your

  950. mistakes?

  951. Well,

  952. that kind

  953. of attitude

  954. is a sign

  955. that we

  956. don't

  957. believe

  958. the gospel.

  959. Deuteronomy

  960. 15,

  961. look at the

  962. rest of

  963. verse 9.

  964. He may

  965. then appeal

  966. to the

  967. Lord against

  968. you and

  969. you will

  970. be found

  971. guilty of

  972. sin.

  973. Give

  974. generously to

  975. him and

  976. do so

  977. without a

  978. grudging

  979. heart.

  980. debt.

  981. I think

  982. we can

  983. have that

  984. very

  985. attitude

  986. towards

  987. the

  988. poor.

  989. I know

  990. I can.

  991. Somebody

  992. who is

  993. in need

  994. and you

  995. think,

  996. well,

  997. you know

  998. what,

  999. they were

  1000. just very

  1001. unwise with

  1002. their money.

  1003. Why should

  1004. I help

  1005. them?

  1006. After all,

  1007. they've just

  1008. been on

  1009. holiday and

  1010. now they

  1011. want a

  1012. handout.

  1013. Huh?

  1014. You've

  1015. got to be

  1016. joking.

  1017. If they're

  1018. in debt,

  1019. well,

  1020. it's because

  1021. they were

  1022. foolish and

  1023. silly.

  1024. I was

  1025. careful with

  1026. my money.

  1027. I saved

  1028. it.

  1029. I put it

  1030. in a

  1031. pension fund

  1032. and,

  1033. well,

  1034. I've been

  1035. very good

  1036. and they've

  1037. just wasted

  1038. theirs.

  1039. Well,

  1040. let me ask

  1041. us this

  1042. question.

  1043. What if

  1044. God had

  1045. that attitude

  1046. with us?

  1047. What if

  1048. God looked

  1049. at my

  1050. sin debt

  1051. and said,

  1052. you know

  1053. what,

  1054. Johnny?

  1055. That's

  1056. your mistake.

  1057. You

  1058. sorted

  1059. out.

  1060. What if

  1061. God were

  1062. to show

  1063. me and

  1064. to throw

  1065. before me

  1066. my

  1067. continued

  1068. sin and

  1069. said,

  1070. you never

  1071. learn.

  1072. I've

  1073. forgiven you

  1074. time after

  1075. time after

  1076. time,

  1077. but this

  1078. time deal

  1079. with it

  1080. yourself.

  1081. The reality

  1082. is we

  1083. would be

  1084. left in

  1085. our

  1086. spiritual

  1087. poverty.

  1088. We

  1089. would be

  1090. left with

  1091. hell.

  1092. You see,

  1093. if we

  1094. have known

  1095. the

  1096. cancellation

  1097. of all

  1098. of our

  1099. sin

  1100. debts,

  1101. past,

  1102. present,

  1103. and future,

  1104. if we

  1105. have known

  1106. the generosity

  1107. and grace

  1108. of God

  1109. who has

  1110. provided us

  1111. with an

  1112. eternal

  1113. kingdom,

  1114. the ultimate

  1115. promised land

  1116. where we

  1117. will never

  1118. be in

  1119. want and

  1120. never be

  1121. in need,

  1122. if we

  1123. have

  1124. experienced

  1125. the fresh

  1126. start that

  1127. only God

  1128. can give

  1129. to our

  1130. lives,

  1131. then we

  1132. will want

  1133. to follow

  1134. his command

  1135. to love

  1136. the poor.

  1137. It will

  1138. not be a

  1139. duty or

  1140. a grudge

  1141. to do it,

  1142. but we

  1143. will just

  1144. love the

  1145. opportunity

  1146. to do it.

  1147. look at

  1148. verse 11

  1149. of chapter

  1150. 15.

  1151. There will

  1152. always be

  1153. poor people

  1154. in the

  1155. land,

  1156. therefore I

  1157. command you

  1158. to be

  1159. open-handed

  1160. towards your

  1161. brothers

  1162. and

  1163. towards the

  1164. poor

  1165. and needy

  1166. in your

  1167. land.

  1168. may God

  1169. give us

  1170. grace

  1171. that we

  1172. would always

  1173. see how

  1174. rich we

  1175. truly are,

  1176. that we

  1177. would be a

  1178. church that

  1179. is open-handed,

  1180. demonstrating

  1181. the amazing

  1182. grace of

  1183. God,

  1184. building those

  1185. bridges to

  1186. welcome people

  1187. in so that

  1188. they may have

  1189. their spiritual

  1190. poverty,

  1191. their sin

  1192. debt cancelled,

  1193. once and

  1194. for all.

  1195. Let's

  1196. pray.

  1197. Just

  1198. reflect for a

  1199. moment

  1200. on the

  1201. amazing work

  1202. of Christ,

  1203. who has

  1204. taken our

  1205. sin debt

  1206. on himself,

  1207. took our

  1208. poverty.

  1209. Thank you,

  1210. Jesus,

  1211. that you have

  1212. cancelled it,

  1213. wiped the

  1214. slate clean,

  1215. and given

  1216. us a fresh

  1217. start.

  1218. heart.

  1219. Thank you

  1220. that every

  1221. day we

  1222. can come,

  1223. as it

  1224. were,

  1225. to the

  1226. cross and

  1227. find that

  1228. fresh start

  1229. because our

  1230. sin debt has

  1231. been cancelled.

  1232. Thank you

  1233. that we live

  1234. today in the

  1235. knowledge that

  1236. we are your

  1237. children,

  1238. treasured and

  1239. loved.

  1240. Lord.

  1241. Thank you for

  1242. your rich,

  1243. generous grace

  1244. to us.

  1245. And thank you

  1246. too for

  1247. blessing us.

  1248. Thank you that we

  1249. live in a country

  1250. despite all of our

  1251. economic struggles.

  1252. thank you for

  1253. our homes,

  1254. for running

  1255. water,

  1256. for food to

  1257. eat,

  1258. for the

  1259. blessings that

  1260. we have every

  1261. single day.

  1262. Thank you for

  1263. your amazing

  1264. grace.

  1265. And please

  1266. would you

  1267. work your

  1268. grace in our

  1269. hearts

  1270. so that we

  1271. are not

  1272. hard-hearted

  1273. but open-handed.

  1274. Please

  1275. provide for

  1276. us in our

  1277. lives so

  1278. that we are

  1279. generous.

  1280. I thank you,

  1281. Father God,

  1282. for this

  1283. church family,

  1284. for the many

  1285. expressions of

  1286. generosity.

  1287. I pray that

  1288. you will

  1289. continue to

  1290. meet all of

  1291. our needs

  1292. so that we

  1293. are a

  1294. generous people

  1295. first to

  1296. one another

  1297. and to

  1298. our wider

  1299. community

  1300. that they

  1301. may see

  1302. something of

  1303. God's

  1304. grace,

  1305. that they

  1306. may be

  1307. drawn in,

  1308. that they

  1309. may experience

  1310. what it is

  1311. to have

  1312. their sin

  1313. debt

  1314. cancelled.

  1315. We ask

  1316. this in

  1317. Jesus'

  1318. name.

  1319. Amen.

  1320. Amen.
