  1. Number of weeks, taking a section at a time. Last week we went, well, this little letter of Titus is all about growing or building a pure church.

  2. That's the big theme that we're taking through this letter. And a key verse for this, I think, is in chapter 2, verse 14.

  3. Just have a look at it there as a simple reminder. Chapter 2, verse 14.

  4. It says there that Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

  5. So God's desire is that he would not only save and rescue his people, but his desire is that he would purify them, that he would make his church pure.

  6. And the first major step in that process is to have pure leaders. And that's what we're going to look at this morning.

  7. And as we do, we're going to ask four questions about leaders and how that all leads to a church or leads to a church that's going to purity.

  8. The first is, why do we need leaders? What do leaders do? Who should be a leader? And how do we appoint leaders?

  9. So four simple questions to look and unpack this section. So question one, why do we need leaders?

  10. Well, as we've seen in recent years in Ireland and our experience of it is that we've had very poor leadership.

  11. Political leaders, religious leaders have been the cause of so much damage and hurt.

  12. So in response, people will say, well, you know what? We don't really need leaders. We're better off without them.

  13. Even the church is better off without leaders. The rejection of Croke Park 2 and the protests at Thatcher's funeral in England all prove that, well, leadership is not always welcomed.

  14. However, God in his wisdom has given his church leaders, which is always for our good and for our best.

  15. In fact, it's not only essential to have leaders, it is an absolute priority.

  16. Look at verse 5. This is the first command that Paul gives to Titus.

  17. The reason I left you in Crete was so that you might straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town as I directed you.

  18. So the church needs straightened out.

  19. It's become very messy, higgledy-piggledy.

  20. There's all sorts of things going on that ought not to be happening.

  21. There's impure teaching and it has all led to impure living.

  22. And the way to straighten it all out, the way to put it right is, as it says there in verse 5, is to appoint elders in every town as I directed you.

  23. You see all over Crete, where he is, there are these small house churches that have been established in little towns and villages.

  24. But they're in great danger of becoming impure.

  25. They're beginning to drift.

  26. And the way to put them right and the way to have them as God intends them to be is, first of all, as it says there in verse 5, is to have elders or leaders in place.

  27. Leaders who are going to put down solid foundations that will build a church towards purity.

  28. So the first question, why do we need leaders?

  29. The answer is very simple.

  30. To establish a pure church.

  31. So question number two.

  32. What do leaders actually do?

  33. That's something that my friends often say to me.

  34. So what do you do?

  35. Kind of like, I mean, I know you do stuff on Sunday, but what do you do the rest of the week?

  36. The smart answer is, oh him, well he doesn't do very much.

  37. Well, whatever our opinion, we are told what leaders should be doing.

  38. Look at verse 7.

  39. It says there, since an overseer.

  40. Now he's changed the word there in verse 5 or verse 6, it talked about an elder.

  41. An elder and an overseer are the same.

  42. Sometimes it's translated as bishop.

  43. Elder, overseer, bishop, they're all the same thing.

  44. An elder is kind of looking at his character.

  45. An overseer describes more the work of an elder.

  46. So verse 7.

  47. An overseer is entrusted with God's work.

  48. So the overseer, the leader, is given the responsibility primarily of taking care of God's church.

  49. He doesn't own the church, but he has been entrusted with looking after it.

  50. He must oversee it.

  51. That's his responsibility.

  52. And how do the elders do that?

  53. Well, look down at verse 9.

  54. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught.

  55. Hold firmly to the trustworthy message.

  56. The trustworthy message is nothing less than the gospel.

  57. It's the gospel.

  58. It's the gospel that Paul has heard that has been passed on to him.

  59. And now Paul is passing it on to Titus.

  60. And Titus is now passing it on to the church.

  61. And the church is to pass it on to the people.

  62. So this trustworthy message is nothing less than the gospel, the good news,

  63. that whole body of teaching that is being passed down to each generation.

  64. And Titus is to hold on to it, have a firm grip upon it.

  65. He's not to let it go.

  66. In other words, he's to make it the pattern of his teaching and the pattern of his life.

  67. The gospel, the word of God has got to remain central

  68. because the gospel is what directs a church

  69. and the gospel is what's going to correct the church.

  70. So the primary responsibility of the overseers or elders

  71. is to make sure that the gospel, the good news of Christ,

  72. informs the life of the church

  73. and also shapes the people of the church.

  74. This is how you ultimately care for the church.

  75. This is how you oversee the church.

  76. And that's why we together, as we are even now,

  77. spending time under the gospel, under the word,

  78. because it's what informs us and what shapes us.

  79. Now with that gospel word, the elders have got to do two things.

  80. Look at the rest of verse 9.

  81. He must hold firmly to it, hold on to it,

  82. make it priority, make it central.

  83. And here's the reason.

  84. Look at the second part of verse 9.

  85. So the purpose of teaching sound doctrine,

  86. which is the same as the trustworthy message,

  87. is to encourage people,

  88. is to support people,

  89. is to build people up in their walk with Christ.

  90. It's to encourage us in what Christ has done for us,

  91. not what we can do for him.

  92. So let me right now encourage us all in the gospel.

  93. Have a look at chapter 3, verse 4.

  94. These are great verses.

  95. This is a wonderful summary

  96. of the heart of what the gospel is all about

  97. and where we need to keep coming back to,

  98. to remind us of what Christ has done

  99. and not what we can do.

  100. So chapter 3, verse 4.

  101. This is a reminder to encourage us

  102. that when the kindness and love of God,

  103. our Saviour, appeared,

  104. he saved us,

  105. not because of righteous things we have done,

  106. but because of his mercy.

  107. He saved us through the washing of rebirth

  108. and the renewal by the Holy Spirit

  109. whom he poured out on us generously

  110. through Jesus Christ, our Saviour.

  111. These are great things.

  112. These are wonderful things

  113. that he intervened into our lives.

  114. He took the initiative out of his kindness,

  115. saved us,

  116. and is renewing us and changing us day by day.

  117. That builds me up

  118. because I know that I mess up

  119. and I need this Saviour every day.

  120. So he's got to encourage the church

  121. in the gospel.

  122. Well, second, in the last part of verse 9,

  123. it says there,

  124. so that he can encourage others

  125. by sound doctrine

  126. and refute those who oppose it.

  127. So again, the other reason

  128. is not just to encourage,

  129. but the reason to teach the gospel

  130. is to refute.

  131. It's to tackle a false gospel.

  132. It means that we are to confront

  133. and correct everything

  134. that is in opposition to the gospel

  135. and God's word.

  136. And that's what the rest of chapter 1

  137. is making clear.

  138. There's a lot of impure teaching going on

  139. and it's led to all kinds of impure living.

  140. And he's got to confront it.

  141. He can't just let it go on.

  142. He's got to correct it.

  143. Otherwise, the church is going to fall apart.

  144. And we'll be looking at that more next week.

  145. So these are the two things

  146. the elders must do.

  147. They've got to keep the gospel,

  148. the word of God, central.

  149. It's got to be informing

  150. and shaping the church.

  151. And the way he does that

  152. is by encouraging people in the gospel

  153. and by challenging a false gospel.

  154. So what do leaders do?

  155. Well, simply this.

  156. They nurture people.

  157. They build people up

  158. towards purity

  159. with the gospel.

  160. That's what leaders ought to be about.

  161. Which brings us to question 3.

  162. Who should be a leader?

  163. Well, it's all about character.

  164. Not letters after the name.

  165. It's all about character.

  166. Not the letters after someone's name.

  167. Which I'm very thankful for

  168. because I don't think I've got any letters

  169. after my name.

  170. But character.

  171. That's what's important.

  172. Chapter 1, verse 6.

  173. An elder must be blameless.

  174. And the same is repeated in verse 7.

  175. An overseer, an elder,

  176. is entrusted with God's work.

  177. He must be blameless.

  178. Now, I do not stand before you,

  179. and Ralph, who's also an elder,

  180. isn't sitting before you,

  181. as blameless.

  182. Are we?

  183. No.

  184. Just ask our wives.

  185. We're not perfect.

  186. We're not saying we are perfect.

  187. None of us are perfect.

  188. It simply means we are to be without blame.

  189. In other words,

  190. there is to be nothing in an elder's life

  191. that disqualifies them from leading.

  192. And the way to test

  193. is to look at an elder's family life

  194. and to look at his public life.

  195. Examine their family life

  196. and their public life

  197. to see if there is anything

  198. that disqualifies from leading.

  199. Now, before we jump on the back of an elder

  200. and start pointing fingers,

  201. let's remember that the details here

  202. that are following in verses 7 through to 8,

  203. this is actually the expectation

  204. for all God's people.

  205. What we expect to see in a leader's life,

  206. we should also expect to see

  207. in every single Christian.

  208. In fact, a very helpful exercise

  209. if you wanted to do this through the week

  210. is to read through verses 7 and 8

  211. and find the equivalent

  212. for every other person

  213. in the life of the church.

  214. And you can find the equivalent

  215. in the letter of Titus.

  216. So what's expected of a leader,

  217. you will also find is expected

  218. of every single person in the church.

  219. But back to our question,

  220. who should be a leader?

  221. Well, let's look at their family life.

  222. Verse 6.

  223. An elder must be blameless,

  224. the husband of but one wife.

  225. Now, this does not mean

  226. an elder must be married,

  227. but if he is married,

  228. he must only have one wife.

  229. And not just legally.

  230. He must have one wife practically.

  231. In other words,

  232. as a husband,

  233. he must be devoted

  234. and loyal

  235. and faithful to his wife.

  236. He doesn't have eyes

  237. for another woman,

  238. real or virtual.

  239. He's a one woman man

  240. who loves his wife,

  241. who delights in her,

  242. who wants to spend time with her

  243. and gives himself

  244. in sacrificial service

  245. to his wife.

  246. So men,

  247. listen up.

  248. If you are married

  249. or you anticipate

  250. on getting married,

  251. are you the husband

  252. of one wife?

  253. Not just legally,

  254. not just because it says so

  255. on the piece of paper,

  256. but practically.

  257. Or are you withholding

  258. your affection and love

  259. from your wife?

  260. Are you giving your devotion

  261. to someone else

  262. or to something else?

  263. The husband of but one wife.

  264. Men,

  265. husbands,

  266. love our wives well.

  267. Well,

  268. we're not only to look

  269. at his relationship

  270. to his wife.

  271. We are to look

  272. at his relationship

  273. to his children.

  274. Look at the rest

  275. of verse 6.

  276. The husband of but one wife,

  277. a man whose children

  278. believe

  279. and are not open

  280. to the charge

  281. of being wild

  282. and disobedient.

  283. Well,

  284. that's a hard one,

  285. isn't it?

  286. Does it really mean

  287. that an elder son

  288. or daughter

  289. must be a Christian,

  290. that they have

  291. to be believers?

  292. Seems to say that.

  293. Well,

  294. I struggled with this

  295. and had to do a lot

  296. of reading

  297. and thinking about it.

  298. And to understand

  299. it correctly,

  300. let me,

  301. let's look at two things

  302. to try and understand it.

  303. First of all,

  304. and I'm no Greek scholar,

  305. okay?

  306. So you check it out

  307. for yourself

  308. if you're a Greek scholar.

  309. From what I've read

  310. and from looking

  311. at those who do

  312. know the language better,

  313. they tell us

  314. that the word here,

  315. believe,

  316. in verse 6,

  317. a man whose children

  318. believe,

  319. also means faithful.

  320. It's the same word.

  321. In fact,

  322. through the pastoral epistles,

  323. which is 1 and 2 Timothy

  324. and Titus,

  325. it uses the word

  326. interchangeably,

  327. believe or faithful.

  328. So in that case,

  329. verse 6,

  330. would be that

  331. an elder's children

  332. are to be faithful,

  333. meaning they are to be

  334. submissive and obedient

  335. to their parents.

  336. So,

  337. it could have that meaning.

  338. But if we look back

  339. to 1 Timothy chapter 3,

    1 Timothy 3:4

  340. verse 4,

  341. so just go back

  342. a couple of pages

  343. to 1 Timothy chapter 3,

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  344. and verse 4.

  345. Paul here is giving

  346. the same instructions

  347. to Timothy

  348. about elders.

  349. We've been reading

  350. about it in Titus,

  351. but here he's giving

  352. the same instructions

  353. to Timothy

  354. about elders.

  355. But look what he says here

  356. in 1 Timothy chapter 3,

    1 Timothy 3:4

  357. verse 4.

  358. He must manage

  359. his own family well

  360. and see that his children

  361. obey him

  362. with proper respect.

  363. Do you see the difference?

  364. He's not saying here

  365. that they must be believers.

  366. He says they must obey him

  367. with proper respect.

  368. And here's the reason,

  369. 1 Timothy 3,

    1 Timothy 3:5

  370. verse 5,

  371. if anyone does not know

  372. how to manage

  373. his own family,

  374. well how can he take care

  375. of God's church?

  376. So I don't think

  377. Paul is saying

  378. one thing to Timothy.

  379. He's not saying to Timothy,

  380. well look,

  381. it doesn't matter

  382. if your children

  383. aren't believers,

  384. if you have any.

  385. That doesn't matter.

  386. But to Titus,

  387. he says something

  388. completely different.

  389. Well your children

  390. have to be believers.

  391. I think he's saying

  392. the same thing,

  393. but in different ways.

  394. An elder's children

  395. must be faithful.

  396. That is,

  397. his children

  398. must not be

  399. undisciplined

  400. and disobedient

  401. or reckless

  402. in their living.

  403. How can we manage

  404. a church family

  405. if we cannot manage

  406. our own family?

  407. And if our own children

  408. are out of control,

  409. how can we ever

  410. lead God's children?

  411. But as we said,

  412. these things are not

  413. just about leaders.

  414. They do apply to leaders.

  415. But this is something

  416. for us all

  417. as fathers.

  418. And again,

  419. we just talked about

  420. the men,

  421. so let me now again

  422. address the fathers.

  423. If you have children

  424. or if you plan

  425. on having children,

  426. this is what

  427. we are called to.

  428. We must not

  429. abdicate

  430. our God-given

  431. responsibility.

  432. It's too easy

  433. an excuse

  434. for a father

  435. to turn around

  436. and say,

  437. well that's the wife's

  438. responsibility.

  439. They're at home

  440. most of the time.

  441. That's what they do.

  442. And it's not

  443. the school teacher's

  444. responsibility.

  445. And it's not

  446. the church's

  447. responsibility.

  448. As a father,

  449. and I speak as a father

  450. with two children,

  451. we have responsibility

  452. to lovingly

  453. discipline

  454. our children

  455. so that they learn

  456. obedience

  457. and respect.

  458. So watch a father

  459. with his children

  460. and you will know

  461. if they are fit

  462. to be an elder.

  463. So,

  464. who should be a leader?

  465. Well,

  466. look at their

  467. family life,

  468. their relationship

  469. to their wife

  470. and their relationship

  471. to their children.

  472. if they have a wife

  473. and if they have

  474. children.

  475. Second,

  476. we must look

  477. at their public life.

  478. And again,

  479. this applies

  480. to us all.

  481. Verse 7.

  482. Since an overseer

  483. is entrusted

  484. with God's work,

  485. he must be

  486. blameless,

  487. not overbearing,

  488. not quick-tempered,

  489. not given

  490. to drunkenness,

  491. not violent,

  492. not pursuing

  493. that dishonest

  494. gain,

  495. rather,

  496. he must be

  497. hospitable,

  498. one who loves

  499. what is good,

  500. who is self-controlled,

  501. upright,

  502. holy

  503. and disciplined.

  504. Now,

  505. he's listed here

  506. five negatives

  507. and they are

  508. contrasted

  509. by five positives.

  510. I've put

  511. holy and disciplined

  512. as one couple.

  513. So,

  514. five negatives

  515. contrasted

  516. by five positives.

  517. And we've listed them

  518. and you'll see

  519. on the screen

  520. side by side

  521. so you can follow.

  522. Let's go through them

  523. one by one.

  524. First,

  525. he says,

  526. they should not

  527. be overbearing

  528. but

  529. hospitable.

  530. So,

  531. we must not

  532. be pushy

  533. and arrogant

  534. so that it

  535. becomes

  536. uncomfortable

  537. to be around

  538. people who are

  539. like that,

  540. who are pushy

  541. and arrogant

  542. and always

  543. wanting their

  544. view and not

  545. listening to

  546. others.

  547. Instead,

  548. he must be

  549. welcoming of

  550. others,

  551. warm and

  552. open home

  553. and open life,

  554. putting people

  555. at their ease.

  556. Not overbearing

  557. but hospitable.

  558. Second,

  559. not quick tempered

  560. but self-controlled.

  561. He must not

  562. lash out

  563. verbally

  564. or physically,

  565. crushing people

  566. with his words

  567. or breaking

  568. with his fists.

  569. Instead,

  570. he must be

  571. one who is

  572. measured

  573. and can

  574. in his

  575. every response,

  576. listening

  577. carefully

  578. and can

  579. in what

  580. he has to

  581. say

  582. and what

  583. he has to

  584. do.

  585. Third,

  586. not a

  587. drunkard

  588. but

  589. holy

  590. and

  591. disciplined.

  592. In other

  593. words,

  594. he must be

  595. one who

  596. is not

  597. dependent

  598. on

  599. alcohol

  600. or

  601. known

  602. for getting

  603. drunk

  604. instead,

  605. he must

  606. be

  607. separate

  608. from,

  609. that's

  610. what it

  611. is to

  612. be

  613. holy,

  614. is to

  615. be

  616. separate

  617. from.

  618. So he's

  619. to be

  620. separate

  621. from this

  622. kind of

  623. behaviour

  624. and

  625. disciplined,

  626. not being

  627. mastered

  628. by unhelpful

  629. habits.

  630. So not

  631. a drunkard

  632. but

  633. holy

  634. and

  635. disciplined.

  636. Fourth,

  637. not violent

  638. but

  639. upright.

  640. he must

  641. not have

  642. a temperament

  643. that is

  644. like a

  645. hurricane

  646. or a

  647. volcano

  648. which

  649. destroys

  650. and erupts,

  651. hitting

  652. his wife

  653. or lashing

  654. out at

  655. his children.

  656. Not

  657. violent

  658. but

  659. upright.

  660. Instead,

  661. he must

  662. deal with

  663. people with

  664. gentleness,

  665. bringing

  666. peace

  667. into a

  668. troubled

  669. situation

  670. and

  671. bringing

  672. calm

  673. where

  674. there's

  675. upset.

  676. So not

  677. violent

  678. but

  679. upright.

  680. And

  681. fifth,

  682. not

  683. pursuing

  684. dishonest

  685. gain

  686. but

  687. love

  688. what

  689. is

  690. good.

  691. he's

  692. not

  693. out

  694. to

  695. make

  696. as

  697. much

  698. money

  699. as

  700. possible.

  701. Being

  702. in the

  703. business

  704. that I

  705. am

  706. in

  707. and

  708. I

  709. talk

  710. about

  711. my

  712. role

  713. as

  714. an

  715. elder

  716. and

  717. a

  718. teaching

  719. elder,

  720. it's

  721. not

  722. here

  723. to

  724. make

  725. as

  726. much

  727. money

  728. as

  729. possible

  730. and

  731. to

  732. get

  733. as

  734. much

  735. out

  736. of

  737. people

  738. regardless

  739. of

  740. the

  741. effects

  742. of

  743. others.

  744. Instead,

  745. he is

  746. to be

  747. one

  748. who

  749. is

  750. other

  751. centered,

  752. generous

  753. with

  754. his

  755. resources,

  756. always

  757. looking

  758. for ways

  759. to support

  760. those in

  761. need

  762. practically

  763. and

  764. financially,

  765. not

  766. pursuing

  767. dishonest

  768. gain

  769. but

  770. loves

  771. what

  772. is

  773. good.

  774. So

  775. let me

  776. say

  777. this,

  778. watch

  779. a man

  780. in his

  781. public

  782. life,

  783. examine

  784. his

  785. public

  786. life,

  787. and

  788. you

  789. will

  790. know

  791. if

  792. he

  793. is

  794. fit

  795. to

  796. be

  797. an

  798. elder.

  799. So

  800. who

  801. should

  802. be

  803. a

  804. leader

  805. within

  806. the

  807. church

  808. of

  809. God?

  810. Well,

  811. one

  812. who

  813. lives

  814. a

  815. life

  816. of

  817. purity.

  818. Question

  819. four.

  820. How do

  821. we go

  822. about

  823. appointing

  824. leaders?

  825. Well,

  826. it's

  827. very

  828. clear that

  829. we

  830. should

  831. not

  832. self

  833. appoint.

  834. In

  835. fact,

  836. whenever

  837. you

  838. are

  839. in

  840. churches

  841. and

  842. situations

  843. where

  844. leaders

  845. self

  846. appoint

  847. themselves,

  848. well,

  849. then you

  850. end up

  851. in all

  852. kinds

  853. of

  854. trouble.

  855. And I

  856. think there

  857. are two

  858. very

  859. helpful

  860. principles

  861. here

  862. to help

  863. us understand

  864. how we

  865. can

  866. appoint.

  867. First,

  868. there's the

  869. responsibility

  870. of the

  871. elders.

  872. elders.

  873. While

  874. there's no

  875. set manual

  876. within

  877. scripture

  878. that you

  879. can look

  880. up and

  881. find kind

  882. of like

  883. elders,

  884. section

  885. 3.5D,

  886. elders,

  887. and you

  888. read all

  889. about it,

  890. it's not

  891. like that.

  892. But what

  893. we do

  894. have are

  895. very clear

  896. principles to

  897. apply,

  898. and I

  899. think this

  900. section here

  901. in Titus

  902. is a very

  903. clear

  904. principle.

  905. In this

  906. case,

  907. Titus

  908. obviously

  909. qualifies

  910. as an

  911. elder,

  912. and he's

  913. been given

  914. the responsibility,

  915. go back to

  916. verse 5,

  917. of appointing

  918. elders in

  919. every town.

  920. So this is

  921. his first

  922. task,

  923. this is his

  924. calling as

  925. he goes to

  926. these churches,

  927. these new

  928. little groups,

  929. these house

  930. churches,

  931. he is to

  932. appoint elders.

  933. And plurality,

  934. not just one,

  935. it's always

  936. plurality,

  937. when we look

  938. through the

  939. Bible it's

  940. always more

  941. than one,

  942. so at least

  943. two,

  944. that would

  945. lead the

  946. local church.

  947. So he's to

  948. appoint them,

  949. he's not to

  950. appoint people

  951. who he likes,

  952. or people who

  953. he just happens

  954. to get on

  955. with,

  956. or people who

  957. will do

  958. what he

  959. says.

  960. No,

  961. the people

  962. that they

  963. must appoint

  964. are those

  965. who are

  966. accountable

  967. to the

  968. whole church

  969. family,

  970. it's not

  971. done in

  972. isolation.

  973. Which brings

  974. us to the

  975. second,

  976. and the

  977. two work

  978. together,

  979. the

  980. accountability

  981. to the

  982. church.

  983. You see,

  984. the qualifications

  985. that we've

  986. just looked

  987. through are

  988. to be used

  989. by the

  990. church to

  991. test those

  992. who would

  993. be leaders.

  994. Elders are

  995. accountable to

  996. the church,

  997. they are not

  998. separate from

  999. the church.

  1000. So I stand

  1001. before you

  1002. this morning

  1003. as one who

  1004. has got a

  1005. responsibility,

  1006. but I am

  1007. also accountable

  1008. to people

  1009. like you.

  1010. You are

  1011. to hold

  1012. me and

  1013. Ralph

  1014. accountable to

  1015. what we've

  1016. just been

  1017. looking at.

  1018. That is

  1019. your role,

  1020. and it's

  1021. serious.

  1022. So in

  1023. practice then,

  1024. when elders

  1025. put a man

  1026. forward,

  1027. he must

  1028. first be

  1029. tested by

  1030. the church

  1031. because he

  1032. is accountable

  1033. to the

  1034. church.

  1035. And if

  1036. when the

  1037. church

  1038. examine and

  1039. look at

  1040. his family

  1041. life,

  1042. his relationship

  1043. to his wife

  1044. and his

  1045. children,

  1046. and look at

  1047. his public

  1048. life,

  1049. and see

  1050. that those

  1051. things are

  1052. all in

  1053. place,

  1054. then it's

  1055. something to

  1056. support and

  1057. to encourage.

  1058. The church

  1059. does not

  1060. appoint people

  1061. they like.

  1062. They do

  1063. not appoint

  1064. people to

  1065. bring in a

  1066. certain kind

  1067. of change

  1068. or to do

  1069. things differently

  1070. just because

  1071. they like

  1072. it.

  1073. Rather,

  1074. we appoint

  1075. those who

  1076. measure up

  1077. to God's

  1078. standard of

  1079. purity.

  1080. So how do

  1081. we appoint

  1082. leaders?

  1083. Well,

  1084. we appoint

  1085. leaders with

  1086. pure motives.

  1087. So four

  1088. very simple

  1089. questions.

  1090. Why do we

  1091. need leaders?

  1092. leaders?

  1093. Well,

  1094. because we

  1095. need a

  1096. pure foundation.

  1097. We need to

  1098. establish

  1099. something solid.

  1100. What do

  1101. leaders do?

  1102. They nurture

  1103. people towards

  1104. purity with

  1105. the gospel.

  1106. Who should

  1107. be a leader?

  1108. Those who

  1109. reflect a

  1110. pure life.

  1111. And how do

  1112. we appoint

  1113. them?

  1114. Well,

  1115. all of us

  1116. have a role

  1117. and responsibility.

  1118. And we

  1119. must do

  1120. so with

  1121. pure

  1122. motives.

  1123. And if

  1124. we have

  1125. these things

  1126. together in

  1127. place,

  1128. then it

  1129. begins to

  1130. move the

  1131. church

  1132. onwards,

  1133. keeping it

  1134. pure and

  1135. growing each

  1136. person in

  1137. a life of

  1138. purity.

  1139. Remove

  1140. this,

  1141. and a

  1142. church will

  1143. digress into

  1144. impurity.

  1145. needless to

  1146. say,

  1147. this is

  1148. serious.

  1149. And so I

  1150. ask that you

  1151. would pray

  1152. for your

  1153. leaders.

  1154. Pray for

  1155. them.

  1156. They face the

  1157. same kind of

  1158. struggles,

  1159. the same kind

  1160. of issues

  1161. as you.

  1162. We sin,

  1163. we fail,

  1164. we mess

  1165. up.

  1166. And so we

  1167. need you to

  1168. pray that we

  1169. would live up

  1170. to what God

  1171. has called

  1172. us to be.

  1173. But pray

  1174. also that God

  1175. would raise

  1176. up leaders.

  1177. Leaders for

  1178. this church,

  1179. leaders for

  1180. Kinsale,

  1181. leaders for

  1182. wherever the

  1183. next church

  1184. plant may be.

  1185. Because this

  1186. is what will

  1187. grow the

  1188. church and

  1189. grow us to

  1190. be more

  1191. pure.

  1192. let's pray

  1193. right now.
