  1. And so Psalm 2 is on page 543, in case you haven't got it.

  2. Psalm 2, why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?

  3. The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his anointed one.

  4. Let us break their chains, they say, and throw off their fetters.

  5. The one enthroned in heaven laughs, the Lord scoffs at them.

  6. Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,

  7. I have instilled my king on Zion, my holy hill.

  8. I will proclaim the decree of the Lord.

  9. He said to me, you are my son, today I have become your father.

  10. Ask of me and I will make the nations your inheritance.

  11. The end of the earth your possession.

  12. You will rule them with an iron scepter.

  13. You will dash them to pieces like pottery.

  14. Therefore, you kings, be wise, be warned, you rulers of the earth.

  15. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling.

  16. Kiss the sun, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way.

  17. For his wrath can flare up in a moment.

  18. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

  19. Thanks very much, Jez.

  20. So you can keep your Bibles open there at Psalm 2.

  21. And if you want to take notes, you can do.

  22. If there's anything you want to follow up with afterwards, delighted to chat that through with you.

  23. Well, let's pray and ask for God's help as we look at this psalm together.

  24. Amen.

  25. Our Father God, we thank you again for your word.

  26. Thank you for making yourself known to us so that we can not only read about you,

  27. but we can also know you personally, intimately.

  28. And it's our desire that we would experience your work in our life.

  29. And that we would be people who see you as you declare yourself to be.

  30. That we wouldn't put our own slant or we wouldn't put our own particular view on things.

  31. But that we would humbly come before you and let you declare to us who you are.

  32. And how we as your people should respond.

  33. So at the very outset, we bow before you.

  34. We kneel before you.

  35. And humbly ask that you would change us and transform us

  36. to be more and more like your Son, the Lord Jesus.

  37. So that the beauty of Christ is reflected in our lives,

  38. in everything we do and in everything we say.

  39. So help us now and pour out your Spirit generously upon us all.

  40. We ask this in Jesus' name for his honour and for his glory.

  41. Amen.

  42. Well, my kids love to fight me.

  43. That should come as no surprise, I guess, if you've got children.

  44. Putting their differences aside, they combine forces,

  45. gang up on me.

  46. They mock me and they threaten me.

  47. They call me chubby and baldy.

  48. Throw cushions at me.

  49. And whatever other missiles there are to hand.

  50. Sometimes they get very brave.

  51. They even punch me and push me to the ground.

  52. But they know it's a pointless exercise.

  53. Because Dad always wins.

  54. At the moment, anyway.

  55. Whether they like it or not, and whether they accept it or not,

  56. I'm bigger and I'm stronger.

  57. Fighting Dad is a futile exercise.

  58. Well, Psalm 2 is all about a fight.

  59. Not a pretend fight.

  60. But a serious fight between the people of the world

  61. and the creator of the world.

  62. It's a fight.

  63. It's a fight that we have started.

  64. It's a fight that we have started.

  65. And that we continue to fuel despite God's offer of peace.

  66. More specifically, our fight is against God's chosen king.

  67. And as we will see through this psalm,

  68. we can either fight him and face his wrath,

  69. or we can submit to him and find refuge.

  70. So what is this fight all about?

  71. Well, first of all, our rebellion.

  72. Verses 1 to 3.

  73. The fight against God is seen individually,

  74. within our own lives,

  75. and also nationally.

  76. Look at verse 1.

  77. He says,

  78. Why do the nations conspire?

  79. And the peoples plot in vain.

  80. In fact, there is a worldwide united rebellion against God.

  81. Verse 2.

  82. The kings of the earth take their stand,

  83. and the rulers,

  84. well, they gather together against the Lord

  85. and against his anointed one.

  86. Let us break their chains, they say,

  87. and throw off their fetters,

  88. everything that binds us to him.

  89. The people of the world, that's you and me,

  90. we long to break free from God's rule and authority.

  91. Of course, we may speak a different language,

  92. we may come from different cultures,

  93. but the world is united in a common goal

  94. to plot the downfall of God.

  95. We could say there is an anti-godness in our world.

  96. It's what Adam and Eve sought to do in the Garden of Eden,

  97. and it's what people continue to do today.

  98. Just simply turn on the television,

  99. listen to the radio,

  100. and any influence or any talk of God,

  101. well, it's quickly shut up.

  102. People don't want to know.

  103. We simply do not want God interfering with our lives.

  104. In fact, we react strongly

  105. when we are confronted with God's authority.

  106. In defiance, we say,

  107. this is my life,

  108. and I will not be told how to live.

  109. Of course, the real test

  110. of whether we are fighting against God,

  111. and this is a test for us,

  112. a question that we can put to ourselves.

  113. Am I fighting against God or not?

  114. Well, the real test

  115. to know whether we are fighting against God

  116. is how we treat God's king.

  117. Look at verse 2.

  118. It says,

  119. The anointed one is a title.

  120. It's the Messiah,

  121. God's specially chosen king.

  122. And the identity of this king,

  123. this anointed one,

  124. is revealed to us very clearly

  125. in Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  126. So keep your finger in Psalm 2

  127. and jump forward to the New Testament

  128. to Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  129. And in Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  130. we read here of Peter and John

  131. who've just been released from prison

  132. because they've been preaching

  133. about the rule and authority

  134. of Jesus Christ.

  135. And they were put in prison for doing that.

  136. And now they've been released

  137. and they get together

  138. with the rest of their disciples

  139. and in response to what has happened,

  140. they turn to God in prayer.

  141. And we're going to pick it up

  142. in chapter 4, verse 24.

  143. Acts 4, verse 24.

    Acts 4:24

  144. When they heard this,

  145. they raised their voices together

  146. in prayer to God.

  147. Sovereign Lord, they said,

  148. you made the heaven

  149. and the earth and the sea

  150. and everything in them.

  151. You spoke by the Holy Spirit

  152. through the mouth of your servant,

  153. our father David.

  154. And there he quotes Psalm 2.

  155. Why do the nations rage

  156. and the peoples plot in vain?

  157. The kings of the earth take their stand

  158. and the rulers gather together

  159. against the Lord

  160. and against his anointed one.

  161. Who's the anointed one?

  162. Read on.

  163. Indeed, Herod and Pontius Pilate

  164. met together with the Gentiles

  165. and the people of Israel

  166. in this city

  167. to conspire against your holy servant,

  168. Jesus,

  169. whom you anointed.

  170. Jesus Christ,

  171. very clearly,

  172. is God's anointed one.

  173. And they are taking their stand

  174. against Jesus.

  175. And here with the people

  176. described there in Acts 4,

  177. you have the most unlikely

  178. of alliances.

  179. You have the people of Israel

  180. who were the Jews

  181. and you've also got the Gentiles

  182. and the Jews and the Gentiles

  183. were completely religiously

  184. and culturally pulled apart.

  185. Then you had Herod

  186. and Pontius Pilate

  187. who politically never got on.

  188. But together,

  189. all four of them

  190. have joined forces

  191. in a united attack

  192. on God's King,

  193. Jesus Christ.

  194. The people

  195. and the rulers,

  196. religious

  197. and political,

  198. uniting together

  199. and they're doing

  200. everything in their power

  201. to destroy Him.

  202. In fact,

  203. they had Him put to death

  204. on a cross.

  205. You see,

  206. at the heart of our fight

  207. with God

  208. is a worldwide

  209. active rebellion

  210. against Jesus Christ.

  211. People may cope

  212. with the idea

  213. of a God.

  214. They may even find it

  215. comforting to know

  216. that there is a God.

  217. But as soon as we introduce

  218. and say that

  219. Jesus Christ

  220. is God's King,

  221. His anointed one

  222. and that we should

  223. submit to Him

  224. and obey Him,

  225. well,

  226. that's a step too much.

  227. We do not want

  228. a King over us.

  229. Back to Psalm 2,

    Psalms 2:3

  230. verse 3.

  231. Let us break

  232. their chains,

  233. they say,

  234. and throw off

  235. their fetters.

  236. Let us cut

  237. every bind

  238. and every tie.

  239. Let's get rid

  240. of Jesus

  241. and let's live

  242. as we choose.

  243. Well,

  244. second,

  245. God's response.

  246. Verses 4 to 6.

  247. Look how God

  248. responds to this

  249. plot

  250. to dethrone Him.

  251. verse 4.

  252. The one

  253. enthroned in heaven,

  254. ha, ha, ha, ha,

  255. the Lord scoffs

  256. at them.

  257. Rather than God

  258. becoming a joke,

  259. we are the joke

  260. for fighting Him.

  261. I remember

  262. when I used to

  263. try and fight

  264. my dad

  265. when I was small.

  266. Maybe you remember

  267. something like this.

  268. He would simply

  269. put his hand

  270. on my head

  271. and hold me

  272. at a distance.

  273. And there I was,

  274. for all I was worth,

  275. swinging punches,

  276. punching thin air,

  277. and all I could hear

  278. was his great

  279. big laugh.

  280. Couldn't touch him.

  281. Well,

  282. fighting God

  283. is a futile exercise.

  284. It's pointless.

  285. And the very thought

  286. of fighting God

  287. is laughable

  288. because,

  289. look at verse 6,

  290. he says,

  291. I have

  292. installed

  293. my king

  294. on Zion,

  295. my holy hill.

  296. I already

  297. rule over you.

  298. I am your king

  299. whether you

  300. accept it or not.

  301. Every attempt

  302. to get rid of me,

  303. every act of defiance

  304. is like a little child

  305. swinging his powerless fists.

  306. It's a laugh.

  307. But there is also

  308. a very serious side

  309. to this rebellion.

  310. Look at verse 5.

  311. Then he rebukes them

  312. in his anger

  313. and terrifies them

  314. in his wrath,

  315. saying,

  316. I have installed

  317. my king.

  318. This

  319. is no laughing matter.

  320. God

  321. is angry

  322. at our rebellion

  323. and he is angry

  324. that we reject

  325. his king.

  326. Now,

  327. God

  328. and anger,

  329. we don't like

  330. to put those two together,

  331. so

  332. we mustn't

  333. view God

  334. like some

  335. vindictive

  336. tyrant

  337. who picks

  338. on powerless

  339. mortals like ourselves

  340. and bullies us

  341. into submission

  342. as if we are

  343. thrown into the ring

  344. with a heavyweight boxer

  345. and we start saying,

  346. stop,

  347. stop,

  348. stop.

  349. It's not like that.

  350. God has lovingly

  351. provided us

  352. with a king

  353. to rule over us.

  354. A loving

  355. and generous

  356. king.

  357. A kind

  358. king

  359. who always

  360. does what is

  361. right and best

  362. for his people.

  363. And it's

  364. under his

  365. rule,

  366. under his

  367. loving and

  368. caring rule,

  369. that we find

  370. our deepest

  371. needs met.

  372. Here we find,

  373. living under him,

  374. we find

  375. satisfaction

  376. and security.

  377. Under this

  378. king,

  379. we find

  380. freedom

  381. and forgiveness.

  382. He's the kind

  383. of king

  384. that we all

  385. long for

  386. and dream of.

  387. A good

  388. king.

  389. So,

  390. when we

  391. rebel against

  392. him,

  393. we're not

  394. only turning

  395. our backs

  396. on him

  397. and walking

  398. away from

  399. him,

  400. we are

  401. actually

  402. breaking

  403. what the

  404. Bible

  405. calls

  406. shalom.

  407. Shalom

  408. is the

  409. harmony,

  410. the beauty,

  411. the order,

  412. the togetherness

  413. of the world.

  414. So,

  415. when we

  416. turn our

  417. backs

  418. on this

  419. king,

  420. we are

  421. actually

  422. fighting

  423. against

  424. his good

  425. and perfect

  426. order.

  427. we are

  428. destroying

  429. and breaking

  430. his good

  431. design.

  432. And the

  433. results

  434. are all

  435. too

  436. common.

  437. Broken

  438. relationships,

  439. family

  440. breakup,

  441. loneliness,

  442. loss of

  443. meaning and

  444. purpose,

  445. violence and

  446. aggression.

  447. Nationally,

  448. we see

  449. wars,

  450. we see

  451. oppression,

  452. injustice.

  453. The shalom,

  454. the harmony,

  455. the beauty

  456. of the world

  457. is being

  458. broken

  459. by our

  460. rebellion.

  461. And God

  462. says,

  463. I will not

  464. allow you

  465. to go on

  466. ruining this

  467. world forever.

  468. And he

  469. will judge

  470. us,

  471. as verse

  472. five

  473. describes.

  474. But we

  475. mustn't

  476. think that

  477. God's

  478. anger is

  479. in some

  480. kind of

  481. way like

  482. a temper,

  483. as if we

  484. just push

  485. the wrong

  486. button and

  487. he just

  488. flips and

  489. he blows

  490. his fuse.

  491. And he

  492. acts like

  493. an out-of-control

  494. madman.

  495. No,

  496. God's

  497. wrath is

  498. his just,

  499. fair,

  500. settled,

  501. and controlled

  502. response to

  503. sinners like

  504. you and me

  505. who have

  506. destroyed and

  507. ruined his

  508. good and

  509. beautiful world.

  510. The problem

  511. is not that

  512. Jesus Christ

  513. is king.

  514. Here's the

  515. problem.

  516. When we

  517. fight the

  518. king,

  519. we face

  520. the king's

  521. anger.

  522. And that

  523. is no

  524. laughing matter.

  525. So what

  526. has God

  527. done about

  528. all of

  529. this?

  530. Well,

  531. third,

  532. God's

  533. decision.

  534. If we

  535. are in

  536. any doubt

  537. as to

  538. God's

  539. rule,

  540. look what

  541. he has

  542. said and

  543. look what

  544. he has

  545. done.

  546. Verse

  547. seven,

  548. I will

  549. proclaim

  550. the decree

  551. of the

  552. Lord.

  553. He said

  554. to me,

  555. you are

  556. my son.

  557. Today I

  558. have become

  559. your father.

  560. Well,

  561. what's that

  562. talking about?

  563. Who's the

  564. son?

  565. What's

  566. this

  567. decree?

  568. What's

  569. this

  570. statement?

  571. Well,

  572. again,

  573. this decree

  574. is picked

  575. up and

  576. it's

  577. helpfully

  578. explained

  579. for us

  580. again in

  581. the book

  582. of Acts.

  583. Go to

  584. Acts

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  585. chapter

  586. 13.

  587. Acts

    Acts 13:32

  588. chapter

  589. 13,

  590. verse

  591. 32.

  592. 32.

  593. Here it's

  594. been Paul

  595. who's been

  596. preaching

  597. and he

  598. makes a

  599. direct link

  600. between

  601. verse

  602. seven of

  603. Psalms

  604. and what

  605. he is

  606. saying

  607. here.

  608. Acts

    Acts 13:32

  609. chapter

  610. 13,

  611. verse

  612. 32.

  613. He says,

  614. we tell

  615. you the

  616. good news.

  617. What's

  618. the good

  619. news?

  620. what God

  621. promised

  622. our fathers,

  623. he has

  624. fulfilled for

  625. us their

  626. children by

  627. raising up

  628. Jesus.

  629. As it is

  630. written in the

  631. second Psalm,

  632. you are my

  633. son.

  634. Today I have

  635. become your

  636. father.

  637. son is

  638. not just

  639. Jesus,

  640. but the

  641. risen

  642. Jesus.

  643. Remember,

  644. the world

  645. thought they

  646. had got

  647. rid of

  648. Jesus when

  649. they killed

  650. him and

  651. hung him

  652. on the

  653. cross.

  654. But the

  655. good news,

  656. as Paul

  657. describes,

  658. is now that

  659. this king,

  660. who you

  661. thought you

  662. had killed,

  663. is the

  664. risen

  665. king.

  666. And the

  667. decree,

  668. the

  669. proclamation

  670. upon him

  671. is to

  672. say,

  673. you are

  674. my son,

  675. and I

  676. am your

  677. father.

  678. His

  679. victory over

  680. death,

  681. his conquering

  682. of the

  683. grave,

  684. proves his

  685. right to

  686. rule.

  687. You cannot

  688. defeat him,

  689. and you

  690. cannot destroy

  691. him.

  692. He has

  693. broken

  694. death,

  695. and he

  696. lives and

  697. reigns

  698. forever.

  699. And look

  700. what God

  701. says about

  702. this risen

  703. king.

  704. back to

  705. Psalm

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  706. chapter 2.

  707. Two things.

  708. First,

  709. that this

  710. risen Jesus,

  711. he owns

  712. the nations,

  713. verse 8.

  714. Ask of me

  715. and I will

  716. make the

  717. nations

  718. your

  719. inheritance,

  720. the ends

  721. of the

  722. earth your

  723. possession.

  724. nation.

  725. You know,

  726. every nation,

  727. including our

  728. own,

  729. has their

  730. own flag and

  731. national anthem.

  732. We sing it

  733. proudly, we

  734. wave our

  735. flags with

  736. pride.

  737. It's a

  738. reflection of

  739. independence,

  740. a statement

  741. of sovereignty.

  742. And every

  743. nation gets to

  744. make up their

  745. own rules and

  746. they decide

  747. who's allowed to

  748. come into their

  749. country and who

  750. has to go.

  751. But you

  752. know what?

  753. In reality,

  754. our flags and

  755. our anthems are

  756. just like a

  757. kid waving a

  758. banner and

  759. blowing a

  760. trumpet.

  761. To God,

  762. our attempt to

  763. own our

  764. nation is

  765. just a

  766. game.

  767. No nation

  768. has true

  769. independence.

  770. no nation

  771. has absolute

  772. sovereignty

  773. because Jesus,

  774. verse 8,

  775. is the

  776. rightful owner.

  777. He has

  778. possession upon

  779. every nation.

  780. He owns

  781. Ireland,

  782. he owns

  783. America,

  784. China belongs

  785. to Jesus,

  786. and Brazil

  787. belongs to

  788. Jesus.

  789. It all

  790. belongs to

  791. him.

  792. But not

  793. only does he

  794. own the

  795. nations,

  796. nations.

  797. Jesus also

  798. rules the

  799. nations as

  800. the risen

  801. Lord,

  802. verse 9.

  803. You will

  804. rule them

  805. with an

  806. iron scepter.

  807. You will

  808. dash them

  809. to pieces

  810. like pottery.

  811. Before the

  812. days of

  813. Xbox and

  814. PS3,

  815. we used to

  816. play board

  817. games.

  818. Do you

  819. remember what

  820. they looked

  821. like?

  822. They came

  823. in boxes

  824. and you

  825. kept them

  826. in cupboards.

  827. And one

  828. of those

  829. board games

  830. that we

  831. used to

  832. play was

  833. a game

  834. called

  835. Risk.

  836. Maybe

  837. some of

  838. you played

  839. it.

  840. It was a

  841. game about

  842. world

  843. domination.

  844. And the

  845. way it

  846. was, you

  847. were all

  848. assigned

  849. different

  850. countries

  851. or parts

  852. of the

  853. globe.

  854. You were

  855. all given

  856. certain

  857. armies of

  858. value and

  859. strength.

  860. And the

  861. object was

  862. to fight

  863. each other

  864. by the

  865. throw of

  866. dice and

  867. to control

  868. the whole

  869. world.

  870. And whoever

  871. controlled the

  872. whole world,

  873. well, they

  874. were the

  875. winner and it

  876. could go on

  877. for days

  878. and weeks

  879. this game.

  880. But at

  881. the end,

  882. what happened

  883. to the

  884. board game?

  885. It got

  886. simply closed

  887. up and

  888. the armies

  889. got put

  890. back into

  891. their box

  892. and the

  893. countries

  894. got put

  895. away.

  896. It was

  897. just a

  898. game.

  899. The

  900. most

  901. same

  902. power

  903. games

  904. happen

  905. in reality.

  906. One

  907. side

  908. calls it

  909. the war

  910. on terror.

  911. Another

  912. side

  913. calls it

  914. jihad.

  915. we see

  916. it played

  917. out on

  918. our TV

  919. screens as

  920. North Korea

  921. threatens to

  922. nuke South

  923. Korea.

  924. The allied

  925. forces threaten

  926. to invade

  927. Syria.

  928. And that's

  929. not to

  930. mention every

  931. border skirmish

  932. and every

  933. revolution taking

  934. place across

  935. the globe.

  936. But to

  937. Jesus, as he

  938. looks down on

  939. all our

  940. acts of

  941. power and

  942. control,

  943. to Jesus,

  944. it's as if

  945. we're playing

  946. risk.

  947. It's like a

  948. board game

  949. to him.

  950. Our

  951. attempts to

  952. rule are

  953. just a

  954. game and

  955. one day

  956. the board

  957. is going

  958. to close

  959. over and

  960. every army

  961. and every

  962. nation will

  963. be crumpled

  964. up.

  965. We may

  966. ignore the

  967. risen Jesus.

  968. We may

  969. even reject

  970. the risen

  971. Jesus.

  972. But that

  973. does not

  974. mean he

  975. is not

  976. king.

  977. So what

  978. is our

  979. response to

  980. this awesome,

  981. mighty and

  982. great king?

  983. Well, God's

  984. rule expressed

  985. through his

  986. son Jesus

  987. Christ requires

  988. our very

  989. careful and

  990. wise response,

  991. verse 10.

  992. Therefore,

  993. you kings,

  994. be wise,

  995. be warned,

  996. you rulers

  997. of the

  998. earth.

  999. Because

  1000. fighting God

  1001. is a

  1002. futile

  1003. exercise.

  1004. So how

  1005. are we to

  1006. respond?

  1007. Verse 11.

  1008. Serve the

  1009. Lord with

  1010. fear and

  1011. rejoice with

  1012. trembling.

  1013. Kiss the

  1014. son,

  1015. lest he be

  1016. angry and

  1017. you be

  1018. destroyed in

  1019. your way for

  1020. his wrath can

  1021. flare up in

  1022. a moment.

  1023. You know,

  1024. in the

  1025. days of

  1026. kings,

  1027. there were

  1028. two ways

  1029. you could

  1030. come and

  1031. approach the

  1032. king.

  1033. First,

  1034. you could

  1035. simply come

  1036. in and

  1037. you would

  1038. make a

  1039. bow at

  1040. your service,

  1041. your majesty.

  1042. It was an

  1043. act of

  1044. submission to

  1045. one greater

  1046. than you.

  1047. Second,

  1048. you could

  1049. also come

  1050. in and

  1051. not just

  1052. bow,

  1053. but you

  1054. would actually

  1055. kneel and

  1056. kiss the

  1057. feet of

  1058. the king.

  1059. Oh,

  1060. great and

  1061. mighty king.

  1062. It was an

  1063. act of

  1064. honour.

  1065. So to

  1066. serve the

  1067. Lord,

  1068. verse 11,

  1069. and to

  1070. kiss the

  1071. son,

  1072. verse 12,

  1073. describes how

  1074. we should

  1075. come to

  1076. the risen

  1077. Lord Jesus.

  1078. He deserves

  1079. nothing less

  1080. than our

  1081. full submission

  1082. of bowing

  1083. down and

  1084. our complete

  1085. honour.

  1086. And we

  1087. declare to

  1088. him,

  1089. at your

  1090. service,

  1091. Lord Jesus,

  1092. for you

  1093. are a

  1094. great and

  1095. mighty

  1096. king.

  1097. We can

  1098. point the

  1099. finger at

  1100. the rebellious

  1101. world,

  1102. but I

  1103. think we

  1104. all know

  1105. that we

  1106. still live

  1107. in defiance.

  1108. Every

  1109. sin,

  1110. every

  1111. thought,

  1112. every word

  1113. that we

  1114. say out

  1115. of temper,

  1116. every action

  1117. that is

  1118. unloving,

  1119. is an

  1120. attempt on

  1121. our part

  1122. to simply

  1123. dethrone

  1124. Jesus.

  1125. In

  1126. defiance,

  1127. we say,

  1128. this is my

  1129. life,

  1130. and I will

  1131. not be told

  1132. how I should

  1133. live.

  1134. love,

  1135. and so we

  1136. regularly need

  1137. to come

  1138. back,

  1139. and we

  1140. need to

  1141. bow in

  1142. humility,

  1143. and kiss

  1144. the feet

  1145. of the

  1146. sun,

  1147. at your

  1148. service,

  1149. Lord Jesus,

  1150. for you are

  1151. the great

  1152. and mighty

  1153. king.

  1154. king.

  1155. And should

  1156. you ever

  1157. question why?

  1158. Well,

  1159. because of

  1160. this,

  1161. because this

  1162. king died

  1163. for you.

  1164. This very

  1165. king,

  1166. who rules

  1167. over all,

  1168. came into

  1169. this world

  1170. for us,

  1171. and stood

  1172. in our

  1173. place,

  1174. and exchanged

  1175. places with

  1176. us,

  1177. and suffered

  1178. God's

  1179. wrath for

  1180. us.

  1181. He is the

  1182. one who

  1183. deserves to

  1184. be served,

  1185. but he is

  1186. the one who

  1187. came to

  1188. serve us,

  1189. and to

  1190. give his

  1191. life for

  1192. us.

  1193. He is the

  1194. one who

  1195. deserves to

  1196. be kissed,

  1197. but he is

  1198. the one who

  1199. kissed us,

  1200. and embraced

  1201. us,

  1202. and welcomed

  1203. us into

  1204. his family,

  1205. treating us,

  1206. as his

  1207. own son.

  1208. This king

  1209. has reached

  1210. out,

  1211. and has

  1212. made peace

  1213. with us.

  1214. Jesus is

  1215. the perfect

  1216. king,

  1217. wise,

  1218. good,

  1219. kind,

  1220. the kind

  1221. of king

  1222. we all

  1223. dream of,

  1224. and so he

  1225. deserves our

  1226. full submission,

  1227. and our

  1228. complete honor.

  1229. to defy

  1230. this king,

  1231. well,

  1232. remember,

  1233. his wrath

  1234. can flare up

  1235. in a moment.

  1236. It simply

  1237. means that we

  1238. do not know

  1239. the day or

  1240. the hour when

  1241. Christ will

  1242. return,

  1243. and your

  1244. life will

  1245. have to be

  1246. given an

  1247. account for.

  1248. But,

  1249. to rest in

  1250. him,

  1251. look at the

  1252. end of

  1253. verse 12,

  1254. look how

  1255. the psalm

  1256. finishes,

  1257. blessed

  1258. are all

  1259. who take

  1260. refuge

  1261. in him.

  1262. Do not

  1263. ignore the

  1264. king's

  1265. command

  1266. to

  1267. continually

  1268. bow down

  1269. and kiss

  1270. the sun.

  1271. Let's pray

  1272. together.

  1273. let's just

  1274. take a

  1275. moment

  1276. in

  1277. personal

  1278. reflection,

  1279. perhaps for

  1280. the first

  1281. time,

  1282. but maybe

  1283. we come

  1284. back again

  1285. and in

  1286. our hearts

  1287. and in

  1288. our minds

  1289. we

  1290. simply

  1291. bow

  1292. before the

  1293. risen

  1294. king

  1295. Jesus.

  1296. Jesus

  1297. we kiss

  1298. the feet

  1299. of the

  1300. sun

  1301. at your

  1302. service,

  1303. your

  1304. majesty,

  1305. for you

  1306. are the

  1307. only

  1308. great and

  1309. mighty

  1310. and awesome

  1311. king.

  1312. Thank you

  1313. for serving

  1314. us.

  1315. Thank you

  1316. for dying

  1317. for us.

  1318. Thank you

  1319. for giving

  1320. your life

  1321. for us

  1322. so that

  1323. we might

  1324. have life

  1325. in all

  1326. its

  1327. fullness

  1328. so that

  1329. we may

  1330. no longer

  1331. fear

  1332. your

  1333. wrath

  1334. but

  1335. enjoy

  1336. you

  1337. forever.

  1338. We

  1339. thank you

  1340. in Jesus

  1341. name.

  1342. Amen.

  1343. Well our

  1344. song that

  1345. we're going

  1346. to

  1347. conclude

  1348. with

  1349. before we

  1350. gather

  1351. around to

  1352. continue

  1353. our

  1354. worship

  1355. of the

  1356. Lord

  1357. around

  1358. his

  1359. table

  1360. around

  1361. the

  1362. Lord's

  1363. supper.

  1364. Could you

  1365. flick on to

  1366. the chorus

  1367. there for

  1368. me?
