  1. It brings a lot to us that we get financial support,

  2. and we really, really appreciate your prayer support as well.

  3. And you can ask Kayla for her blog after church,

  4. so you guys can all read it.

  5. All right.

  6. So, Psalm 87.

  7. He has set his foundation on the holy mountain.

  8. The Lord loves the gates of Zion

  9. more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

  10. Glorious things are said of you, O city of our God.

  11. I will record Rahab and Babylon

  12. among those who acknowledge me,

  13. Philistia 2 and Tyre, along with Cush.

  14. And will say, This one was born in Zion.

  15. Indeed of Zion it will be said,

  16. This one and that one were born in her,

  17. and the Most High himself will establish her.

  18. The Lord will write in the register of the peoples,

  19. This one was born in Zion.

  20. As they make music, they will sing,

  21. All of my fountains are in you.

  22. Thanks, Lucy.

  23. Just on that note in terms of their trips overseas,

  24. there's a little flyer at the back called Summer Service,

  25. which just indicates all the different people

  26. are serving in different ways,

  27. how you can pray for them.

  28. There's also a box at the back.

  29. If you weren't able to give last week,

  30. and you would like to be able to give,

  31. in particular for those who are travelling overseas,

  32. then you can do that as well this morning.

  33. Well, Psalm 87,

  34. not sure what page it is on the red-covered Bible.

  35. 5.8.6.

  36. 5.9.6, sorry.

  37. And we're going to look at Psalm 87 together.

  38. Before we do, we're going to pray and just ask for God's help.

  39. So let's do that now.

  40. Father, thank you for the Bible.

  41. Thank you for your word.

  42. That's been written down for us.

  43. And we ask for the help of your Holy Spirit

  44. to speak to us afresh through it,

  45. that what was written hundreds of years ago

  46. would be real and alive to us today.

  47. Help us to understand it

  48. and help us to work it out in our own lives

  49. and to see what it is that you have called us to.

  50. The great city of God.

  51. Amen.

  52. Well, if you've never been,

  53. I'm sure we've all seen pictures

  54. of some of the great cities of the world.

  55. Think of a city like New York or Tokyo

  56. with their towering skyscrapers

  57. of businesses and banks.

  58. It's a statement of wealth and success.

  59. Or somewhere like Cape Town and Rio

  60. with their awesome panoramic views,

  61. golden beaches and sunsets.

  62. It's an image of health and happiness.

  63. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people

  64. migrate to the great cities of the world

  65. in search of a good life,

  66. a better life.

  67. In fact, by 2050,

  68. seven out of every ten people on the planet

  69. will be living in a city.

  70. They offer everything that we all dream for.

  71. Safety and security,

  72. peace, prosperity,

  73. joy and justice,

  74. beauty and harmony.

  75. These are all things that we want

  76. and the city says,

  77. we've got it for you.

  78. However, reality paints a different picture.

  79. Read your newspaper,

  80. turn on the news.

  81. Our cities are places of fear and violence.

  82. A place where evil rules,

  83. where injustice and greed reign.

  84. On my recent trip to Mongolia,

  85. I stayed in the capital of Ulaanbaatar.

  86. That capital has a population of 1.5 million.

  87. It's one of the fastest growing economies in the world

  88. due to all the mining that's taking place in the country.

  89. But almost half the population of that capital

  90. live in dire conditions.

  91. Temperatures reach to minus 40 in winter,

  92. plus 30 in the summer.

  93. And yet half that population live without running water,

  94. electricity, sewage or drainage.

  95. But yet still the people come running to the city

  96. in search of a better and a good life.

  97. Cities have always been a magnet

  98. for the economically pressed

  99. and the politically oppressed.

  100. Whether it's New York or Cork City,

  101. people always come looking for something better.

  102. Well, in Psalm 87,

  103. we're introduced to the city that we all dream about,

  104. the city we all long for.

  105. It's the ultimate city.

  106. It's an eternal city

  107. where its residents are loved and cared for.

  108. It's a city of everlasting joy.

  109. No sadness, no pain.

  110. A place where her people are welcomed

  111. and are filled and forever satisfied.

  112. So let's have a look at this city.

  113. First, we're introduced to the God of the city.

  114. The city's builder and founder.

  115. Look at verse 1.

  116. He, that's God,

  117. has set his foundation on the holy mountain.

  118. This is no ordinary city.

  119. This is a city that's been planned

  120. way back in eternity past

  121. and was founded and built and established by God.

  122. So it has a sense of permanence.

  123. It always has been

  124. and it always will be.

  125. Just like the very mountains

  126. it is built upon.

  127. We get the same idea

  128. if you just hold your finger in Psalm 87

  129. and go back to Psalm 48.

  130. This is another psalm that talks about the city.

  131. We read it earlier this morning.

  132. Psalm 48.

  133. Let's just read verses 1 to 3.

  134. Talking again about the city.

  135. Great is the Lord

  136. and most worthy of praise

  137. in the city of our God,

  138. his holy mountain.

  139. It is beautiful

  140. in its loftiness,

  141. in its greatness.

  142. It's the joy

  143. of the whole earth.

  144. Like the utmost heights of Zaphon,

  145. that great big mountain range,

  146. is found Mount Zion,

  147. which is the city

  148. of the great king.

  149. God is in her citadels,

  150. in the great towers,

  151. and he has shown himself

  152. to be her fortress.

  153. Now read verse 8.

  154. As we have heard,

  155. so we have seen,

  156. in the city

  157. of the Lord Almighty,

  158. in the city

  159. of our God,

  160. God makes her

  161. secure

  162. forever.

  163. I'm sure you've all seen

  164. or perhaps read

  165. Tolkien's

  166. Lord of the Rings.

  167. Well, picture

  168. the image

  169. of some of those

  170. great cities,

  171. Minas Tiris,

  172. the heavily fortified

  173. capital of Gandor,

  174. which is built

  175. into the mountain face.

  176. It's a place

  177. of rest

  178. and refuge

  179. from the evil forces

  180. of Sauron.

  181. Well, that's the imagery

  182. that we have here

  183. in Psalm 48

  184. and Psalm 87.

  185. It's like Minas Tirith,

  186. this enormous city

  187. built into the landscape

  188. of the mountains

  189. to endure forever

  190. and ever,

  191. a place of safety

  192. and security.

  193. But what makes

  194. this city,

  195. back to Psalm 87,

  196. what makes this city

  197. so unique?

  198. It's not so much

  199. its design

  200. or its architecture,

  201. but who lives there?

  202. Verse 3,

  203. Psalm 87,

  204. glorious things

  205. are said of you,

  206. O city of God.

  207. This city

  208. is God's city,

  209. it's the city

  210. that he has chosen

  211. to dwell in.

  212. This is God's home,

  213. if you like.

  214. He's chosen

  215. to reside here.

  216. So it's not surprising

  217. that God loves

  218. this city.

  219. Verse 2,

  220. it tells us

  221. that the Lord

  222. loves the gates

  223. of Zion.

  224. Zion is another word

  225. for God's city.

  226. God loves the gates

  227. of Zion

  228. more than all

  229. the dwellings

  230. of his people.

  231. and he loves

  232. the city

  233. because

  234. this is where

  235. people like you

  236. and I

  237. get to meet God.

  238. Look at verse 2 again,

  239. it says,

  240. the Lord loves

  241. the gates

  242. of Zion.

  243. The gates,

  244. like any gates,

  245. implies

  246. this is the way in,

  247. this is an entrance

  248. into the city

  249. because through

  250. the gates

  251. people get in

  252. and God loves

  253. the gates

  254. because it means

  255. people can come

  256. into the city.

  257. People can come

  258. to God.

  259. So this is

  260. God's city.

  261. It's a place

  262. that he has founded

  263. or that he has built

  264. from eternity past

  265. and this is where

  266. he now dwells.

  267. And it's the city

  268. that God loves

  269. because he gathers

  270. people into the city

  271. to find rest

  272. and refuge,

  273. safety

  274. and security.

  275. But we're also

  276. introduced to

  277. the people

  278. of the city,

  279. the residents

  280. or the inhabitants.

  281. Verse 4,

  282. look at what it says

  283. in verse 4.

  284. He says,

  285. I will record

  286. Rahab.

  287. Rahab was another

  288. name for the,

  289. for Egypt.

  290. He says,

  291. I will record

  292. Rahab and Babylon

  293. among those

  294. who acknowledge me.

  295. Philistia 2

  296. and Tyre

  297. along with Cush

  298. and will say,

  299. this one,

  300. that country,

  301. that place

  302. was born

  303. in Zion.

  304. You see,

  305. the people that are

  306. in this city

  307. are very diverse.

  308. They're not all

  309. from the same place.

  310. They all come

  311. from different nations.

  312. They speak

  313. different languages.

  314. They have

  315. different cultures.

  316. But they're all

  317. there in the one

  318. city.

  319. But there's a

  320. surprise here.

  321. There's a big

  322. shock here.

  323. They come from

  324. places we would

  325. think would be

  326. excluded.

  327. Look at some of

  328. these names.

  329. They're not

  330. necessarily familiar

  331. to us,

  332. but let's explain.

  333. Rahab or Egypt

  334. and Babylon

  335. were the great

  336. enemies of God

  337. and his people.

  338. You remember

  339. the stories of

  340. Egypt.

  341. They were the

  342. people that

  343. enslaved God's

  344. people,

  345. treated them

  346. brutally and

  347. harshly.

  348. Babylon,

  349. they invaded

  350. God's people

  351. and took them

  352. off into

  353. captivity.

  354. Then there's

  355. Philistia,

  356. home of the

  357. Philistines,

  358. and Tyre.

  359. They were

  360. always attacking

  361. and threatening

  362. God's people.

  363. Always at war

  364. with them.

  365. And then we've

  366. got mention of

  367. this place,

  368. Cush.

  369. Well, this is a

  370. far-off,

  371. unknown,

  372. distant land,

  373. a way out

  374. there, a

  375. Ballygo

  376. backwards place.

  377. Nobody ever

  378. went on

  379. holidays to

  380. Cush.

  381. But surprisingly,

  382. all these

  383. people from

  384. all these

  385. different nations

  386. are all

  387. present in

  388. the city of

  389. God.

  390. And amazingly,

  391. they are all

  392. considered

  393. citizens.

  394. Look at the

  395. end of verse

  396. four.

  397. God says,

  398. of this one

  399. I will say

  400. they were

  401. born in

  402. Zion.

  403. Well, how

  404. could they be

  405. born there if

  406. they're not

  407. from there?

  408. Well, some of

  409. you know that I

  410. was born in

  411. London.

  412. A real

  413. cockney I

  414. am.

  415. Not really,

  416. but that's

  417. where I was

  418. born.

  419. Lived there

  420. for the first

  421. six weeks of

  422. my life.

  423. life.

  424. And then my

  425. parents moved

  426. to Ireland.

  427. So I've

  428. been here

  429. 99.99%

  430. of my life.

  431. I've studied

  432. here.

  433. I've worked

  434. here.

  435. I've paid my

  436. taxes here.

  437. I help out in

  438. the community.

  439. I love being

  440. here.

  441. But you know

  442. what?

  443. Because I

  444. wasn't born

  445. here, I'm

  446. not actually a

  447. citizen.

  448. I'm not

  449. legally Irish.

  450. I hold a

  451. British passport.

  452. Shh.

  453. But I

  454. support Ireland.

  455. You see, to

  456. be Irish, to

  457. be a citizen, I

  458. must be born

  459. here.

  460. That's the only

  461. way for me to

  462. qualify.

  463. And look at the

  464. nations and the

  465. people that are

  466. mentioned here in

  467. verse 4.

  468. None of them

  469. qualify.

  470. None of them

  471. have the right

  472. papers or the

  473. legal documents.

  474. They're all

  475. outsiders.

  476. They should all

  477. be kept

  478. outside.

  479. But look at

  480. verse 5.

  481. In deed of

  482. Zion, of

  483. God's city, it

  484. will be said,

  485. this one and

  486. that one, the

  487. enemy, the

  488. outsider, the

  489. excluded one,

  490. they will all

  491. be born in

  492. her and the

  493. Most High

  494. himself will

  495. establish her.

  496. They will be

  497. treated as if

  498. they were born

  499. in the city.

  500. And that's

  501. what it is

  502. like for me

  503. living here.

  504. I am treated

  505. as if I was

  506. born here.

  507. In fact, God

  508. declares, he

  509. says, you

  510. were born

  511. here.

  512. Because God's

  513. city is a

  514. welcoming city.

  515. God longs that

  516. his city would

  517. be filled with

  518. people from

  519. all kinds of

  520. nations, even

  521. people like you

  522. and me.

  523. And let's be

  524. clear, the

  525. residents, the

  526. inhabitants of

  527. this city.

  528. They don't

  529. get into the

  530. city because

  531. of their

  532. race or

  533. their particular

  534. religion.

  535. They are not

  536. there because

  537. they're superior.

  538. They're not

  539. there because

  540. they're good

  541. moral people and

  542. they've lived a

  543. good life and

  544. they've never

  545. done this and

  546. they've never

  547. done that.

  548. No, they are

  549. there simply

  550. because God

  551. has opened his

  552. gates to them.

  553. Look at

  554. verse 6.

  555. The Lord

  556. will write in

  557. the register

  558. of the

  559. peoples, this

  560. one was born

  561. in Zion.

  562. It's like

  563. there's a

  564. kind of a

  565. roll call.

  566. He's got a

  567. list and he's

  568. writing their

  569. names down

  570. there and

  571. say, you

  572. were born

  573. here.

  574. We don't

  575. get into the

  576. city because

  577. of our

  578. ability.

  579. We don't

  580. get into the

  581. city because

  582. of our

  583. gifting or

  584. our particular

  585. background or

  586. because of

  587. what our

  588. parents believed

  589. or anybody

  590. else believes,

  591. we get into

  592. the city because

  593. God writes

  594. our name in

  595. his book on

  596. the registry.

  597. So here's

  598. the people of

  599. the city,

  600. diverse,

  601. shocking,

  602. surprising.

  603. Outsiders

  604. are welcomed

  605. in and now

  606. treated as

  607. residents to

  608. share in

  609. and enjoy

  610. all that God

  611. has to give

  612. them from

  613. the city.

  614. So there

  615. are the

  616. people.

  617. We're also

  618. shown the

  619. life of the

  620. city, what

  621. it's actually

  622. like to

  623. live there.

  624. Verse 7.

  625. As they

  626. make music,

  627. they will

  628. sing, all

  629. my fountains

  630. are in you.

  631. This is a

  632. city that's

  633. full of

  634. joy, true

  635. joy and

  636. fulfillment.

  637. The music and

  638. the singing,

  639. well, you

  640. might be very

  641. musical, you

  642. might play an

  643. instrument or

  644. you mightn't

  645. sing, but

  646. it's all

  647. imagery.

  648. And the

  649. singing and

  650. the playing of

  651. instruments are

  652. all signs of

  653. this new,

  654. vibrant and

  655. eternal life

  656. that God has

  657. to give.

  658. Look at the

  659. end of verse

  660. 7, he says,

  661. all my

  662. fountains are

  663. in you.

  664. The city is a

  665. source of

  666. life.

  667. You know

  668. what a

  669. fountain is

  670. like, it's

  671. bubbling up,

  672. it's overflowing,

  673. it's abundant,

  674. it's full,

  675. it's fresh.

  676. Well, this is

  677. again imagery,

  678. it's saying this

  679. is what God's

  680. city is like,

  681. it's overflowing

  682. with life in

  683. all its

  684. fullness.

  685. It's life the

  686. way God

  687. intended it to

  688. be, without

  689. pain or

  690. suffering, without

  691. tragedy, without

  692. crime, without

  693. things going

  694. wrong.

  695. The city is

  696. the fountain of

  697. true life.

  698. life.

  699. This is where

  700. salvation is

  701. found.

  702. Whatever we

  703. believe right

  704. now, whatever

  705. our background

  706. is, this is

  707. the kind of

  708. city we dream

  709. of and long

  710. for.

  711. A place where

  712. people from all

  713. kinds of

  714. backgrounds are

  715. all together,

  716. and there's no

  717. fighting, there's

  718. no war.

  719. Everybody's filled

  720. and everybody's

  721. satisfied.

  722. A place of

  723. beauty and

  724. harmony, joy

  725. and justice.

  726. Nobody's left

  727. out.

  728. There's peace,

  729. there's prosperity

  730. and abundance,

  731. safety and

  732. security.

  733. This is the

  734. perfect city.

  735. It's the

  736. ultimate city.

  737. It's what films

  738. are written

  739. about, and

  740. books are

  741. written about.

  742. We all want

  743. this kind of

  744. city.

  745. Which is all

  746. great to read

  747. and to think

  748. about it.

  749. But I want

  750. us to think

  751. through very

  752. briefly three

  753. important

  754. questions.

  755. First, it

  756. would be a

  757. good thing to

  758. know where

  759. the city is.

  760. How am I

  761. going to get

  762. there?

  763. Do I need to

  764. jump on a

  765. plane or drive

  766. in my car?

  767. I want to get

  768. to the city.

  769. How am I

  770. going to get

  771. there?

  772. Where is it?

  773. Well, let me

  774. say this.

  775. It is

  776. something

  777. future and

  778. it is

  779. something

  780. present.

  781. It's

  782. something

  783. future and

  784. something

  785. present.

  786. We're going

  787. to jump

  788. forward to

  789. the book

  790. of Hebrews

  791. because this

  792. whole theme

  793. of the city,

  794. it's introduced

  795. here in

  796. Psalm 87,

  797. but it's

  798. picked up the

  799. whole way

  800. through the

  801. Bible and

  802. we're just

  803. going to

  804. pick up on

  805. some of the

  806. themes of

  807. this city.

  808. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  809. 11 and

  810. if somebody's

  811. got a page

  812. number,

  813. that'll be

  814. helpful for

  815. me and I

  816. can shout

  817. it out.

  818. 1-2-0-9.

  819. Page 1-2-0-9.

  820. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  821. 11.

  822. So it's

  823. something

  824. future and

  825. something

  826. present.

  827. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  828. 11 and

  829. we're going to

  830. start at

  831. verse 8.

  832. Abraham,

  833. well he

  834. must be

  835. one of

  836. the oldest

  837. guys that

  838. we know

  839. about way,

  840. way,

  841. way back

  842. long time

  843. ago.

  844. By faith

  845. we're told

  846. verse 8 that

  847. Abraham when

  848. called to go

  849. to a place

  850. he would

  851. later receive

  852. as his

  853. inheritance,

  854. obeyed and

  855. went even

  856. though he

  857. didn't know

  858. where he

  859. was going.

  860. Would you

  861. go where

  862. you didn't

  863. know where

  864. you were

  865. going?

  866. Abraham

  867. did.

  868. Verse 10.

  869. He was

  870. looking forward

  871. to the

  872. city with

  873. foundations whose

  874. architect and

  875. builder is God.

  876. He was

  877. looking for the

  878. city we've

  879. just read

  880. about in

  881. Psalm 87.

  882. Where does

  883. he find it?

  884. How does he

  885. get to it?

  886. Look at

  887. verse 16.

  888. It wasn't

  889. any physical

  890. place on

  891. earth.

  892. Verse 16.

  893. Instead they

  894. were longing

  895. for a

  896. better

  897. country,

  898. a heavenly

  899. one.

  900. Therefore

  901. God is not

  902. ashamed to

  903. be called

  904. their God

  905. for he

  906. has prepared

  907. a city

  908. for them.

  909. You see

  910. we won't

  911. find the

  912. city we've

  913. just read

  914. about here

  915. on earth.

  916. It's not

  917. found in

  918. Cork City.

  919. It's not

  920. found in

  921. New York.

  922. We may

  923. love the

  924. cities but

  925. we won't

  926. find it

  927. here.

  928. Because it's

  929. a heavenly

  930. city.

  931. This is

  932. what Abraham

  933. and all

  934. God's

  935. people

  936. throughout

  937. time

  938. long for

  939. and wait

  940. for.

  941. Here in

  942. the heavenly

  943. city,

  944. heaven itself,

  945. we will

  946. experience

  947. life as

  948. God intended

  949. it to be

  950. in all its

  951. beauty and

  952. all its

  953. perfection.

  954. We read

  955. about it

  956. later don't

  957. we where we

  958. see that God

  959. dwells with

  960. his people

  961. in the

  962. city.

  963. There's no

  964. tears,

  965. no sadness,

  966. there's no

  967. funerals,

  968. nobody gets

  969. sick.

  970. It's a life

  971. without sin

  972. or evil,

  973. the absence

  974. of all

  975. suffering and

  976. pain.

  977. That's the

  978. eternal city

  979. we long

  980. for.

  981. So it is

  982. something

  983. future but

  984. I also want

  985. us to see

  986. that it is

  987. something

  988. present.

  989. Jump forward

  990. to Hebrews

    Hebrews 12:22

  991. chapter 12

  992. verse 22.

  993. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12:22

  994. chapter 12

  995. verse 22.

  996. And again

  997. look at the

  998. words that he

  999. uses here to

  1000. describe the

  1001. city.

  1002. Hebrews 12

    Hebrews 12:22

  1003. verse 22.

  1004. He says

  1005. but you have

  1006. come to

  1007. Mount Zion,

  1008. another word

  1009. for God's

  1010. city, to the

  1011. heavenly

  1012. Jerusalem,

  1013. that eternal

  1014. city, the

  1015. city of

  1016. the living

  1017. God.

  1018. You have

  1019. come to

  1020. thousands upon

  1021. thousands of

  1022. angels in

  1023. the joyful

  1024. assembly.

  1025. Where's that?

  1026. Look at

  1027. verse 23.

  1028. To the

  1029. church of

  1030. the firstborn

  1031. whose names

  1032. are written

  1033. in heaven.

  1034. You see

  1035. he's moved

  1036. from thinking

  1037. about the

  1038. eternal city

  1039. to talking

  1040. about the

  1041. church.

  1042. We're waiting

  1043. for the

  1044. eternal city

  1045. but in

  1046. the meantime

  1047. we've come

  1048. to the

  1049. church.

  1050. The church

  1051. isn't a

  1052. building we're

  1053. meeting here

  1054. yes but

  1055. it's not a

  1056. church.

  1057. The people

  1058. are the

  1059. church.

  1060. God's

  1061. family.

  1062. And the

  1063. church,

  1064. the people

  1065. here,

  1066. is a

  1067. taste of

  1068. the eternal

  1069. city to

  1070. come.

  1071. Every local

  1072. church,

  1073. church,

  1074. and I

  1075. want us

  1076. to get

  1077. this,

  1078. every

  1079. little

  1080. church

  1081. is like

  1082. a mini

  1083. city.

  1084. We're the

  1085. residents of

  1086. the city.

  1087. We're to

  1088. reflect God's

  1089. eternal city,

  1090. a reflection of

  1091. all that God

  1092. has promised.

  1093. Because in the

  1094. church what do

  1095. we find?

  1096. People.

  1097. People from

  1098. all kinds of

  1099. nations and

  1100. cultures and

  1101. languages and

  1102. backgrounds and

  1103. they've all been

  1104. welcomed.

  1105. and it

  1106. should be a

  1107. place of

  1108. rest and

  1109. refuge, a

  1110. place where we

  1111. receive grace

  1112. and peace,

  1113. where we

  1114. experience joy

  1115. in the support

  1116. of one another.

  1117. We receive

  1118. all the things

  1119. that we long

  1120. for, forgiveness.

  1121. And when

  1122. things mess up

  1123. we have people

  1124. who are there

  1125. to help us.

  1126. So the

  1127. church is a

  1128. taste of the

  1129. city we all

  1130. long for.

  1131. It's like a

  1132. mini city.

  1133. And we're the

  1134. residents of

  1135. the city,

  1136. awaiting our

  1137. future home.

  1138. So where is

  1139. the city?

  1140. It's something

  1141. to look forward

  1142. to, but it's

  1143. something we can

  1144. begin to enjoy

  1145. now through

  1146. the life of

  1147. God's people.

  1148. That's the

  1149. first question.

  1150. The second

  1151. question is

  1152. this.

  1153. Okay, we know

  1154. where it is,

  1155. but how do we

  1156. get into the

  1157. city?

  1158. How can I

  1159. be part of

  1160. it?

  1161. Well, look at

  1162. the rest of

  1163. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 12:23

  1164. 12 verse 23

  1165. again.

  1166. Hebrews 12

    Hebrews 12:23

  1167. verse 23.

  1168. We've come to

  1169. the church of

  1170. the firstborn

  1171. whose names

  1172. are written

  1173. in heaven.

  1174. You have

  1175. come to

  1176. God, the

  1177. judge of

  1178. all people,

  1179. to the

  1180. spirits of

  1181. the righteous

  1182. men or

  1183. righteous people

  1184. made perfect.

  1185. So those are

  1186. those who are

  1187. in heaven.

  1188. verse 24,

  1189. to Jesus,

  1190. the mediator

  1191. of a new

  1192. covenant.

  1193. Do you see

  1194. again how he

  1195. moves through

  1196. it?

  1197. To come to

  1198. the city,

  1199. he says,

  1200. is the same

  1201. as coming

  1202. to Jesus.

  1203. If we want

  1204. to get into

  1205. the city,

  1206. if we want

  1207. to enjoy

  1208. and experience

  1209. this city,

  1210. we must come,

  1211. verse 24,

  1212. to Jesus,

  1213. the mediator.

  1214. He's the

  1215. entrance,

  1216. he's the

  1217. gate,

  1218. he's the

  1219. way into

  1220. the city.

  1221. How is

  1222. Jesus the

  1223. way in?

  1224. How is

  1225. he a

  1226. gate?

  1227. Well,

  1228. look at

  1229. Hebrews

    Hebrews 13:12

  1230. chapter 13

  1231. verse 12.

  1232. Try and

  1233. keep this

  1234. logic going.

  1235. How are we

  1236. getting into

  1237. the city?

  1238. We go

  1239. through Jesus.

  1240. He's the

  1241. gate,

  1242. he's the

  1243. entrance.

  1244. How is

  1245. that so?

  1246. Chapter 13

  1247. verse 12.

  1248. Look what

  1249. we read

  1250. about Jesus

  1251. here.

  1252. Chapter 13

  1253. verse 12.

  1254. So Jesus

  1255. also suffered

  1256. outside the

  1257. city gate

  1258. to make

  1259. the people

  1260. holy

  1261. through his

  1262. blood.

  1263. That's

  1264. through his

  1265. death.

  1266. Let us

  1267. then go

  1268. to him

  1269. outside the

  1270. camp or

  1271. outside the

  1272. city,

  1273. bearing the

  1274. disgrace

  1275. he bore.

  1276. For here

  1277. on this

  1278. earth we

  1279. do not

  1280. have an

  1281. enduring

  1282. city,

  1283. but we

  1284. are looking

  1285. for the

  1286. city that

  1287. is to

  1288. come.

  1289. You see,

  1290. Jesus took

  1291. on himself

  1292. all of our

  1293. disgrace,

  1294. all of our

  1295. sin,

  1296. all of our

  1297. guilt,

  1298. and all of

  1299. our shame.

  1300. If this is

  1301. me here,

  1302. and this is

  1303. Jesus here,

  1304. and all my

  1305. mess,

  1306. and all my

  1307. failures,

  1308. and there's

  1309. lots of

  1310. them,

  1311. just talk

  1312. to my

  1313. family,

  1314. they'll

  1315. tell you

  1316. what they

  1317. all are.

  1318. Jesus has

  1319. taken all

  1320. of that

  1321. disgrace,

  1322. all of

  1323. that sin

  1324. and guilt,

  1325. and he's

  1326. taken it

  1327. on himself.

  1328. And he

  1329. was put

  1330. outside the

  1331. city.

  1332. He went

  1333. outside the

  1334. city and

  1335. suffered and

  1336. died for

  1337. us in

  1338. our place.

  1339. He was

  1340. abandoned,

  1341. he was

  1342. pushed out,

  1343. he was the

  1344. one excluded

  1345. from the

  1346. city,

  1347. because he

  1348. took our

  1349. sin,

  1350. he couldn't

  1351. get in,

  1352. so that

  1353. we might

  1354. be,

  1355. look at

  1356. verse 12,

  1357. the end

  1358. of verse 12,

  1359. made holy

  1360. through his

  1361. blood,

  1362. made right

  1363. before God

  1364. through his

  1365. death,

  1366. so that we

  1367. could be

  1368. welcomed into

  1369. the city,

  1370. and never

  1371. be thrown

  1372. out of the

  1373. city.

  1374. Jesus was

  1375. pushed out

  1376. so that we

  1377. might be

  1378. welcomed in.

  1379. That's how

  1380. we get into

  1381. the city.

  1382. It's through

  1383. Jesus.

  1384. And the

  1385. final question,

  1386. we know

  1387. where it is,

  1388. it's something

  1389. future, but

  1390. it's also

  1391. something present,

  1392. we know how

  1393. we get in,

  1394. we go through

  1395. Jesus,

  1396. but who?

  1397. Who can get

  1398. in?

  1399. Who's welcomed?

  1400. Well, think

  1401. back to what

  1402. we looked at

  1403. in the

  1404. psalm.

  1405. God welcomes

  1406. all people.

  1407. He's opened

  1408. his gates

  1409. wide to

  1410. his enemies.

  1411. That means

  1412. to sinful

  1413. rebels like

  1414. you and

  1415. me.

  1416. Psalm 87

    Psalms 87:4

  1417. verse 4

  1418. says,

  1419. I will

  1420. record

  1421. Rahab

  1422. and Babylon,

  1423. the enemy,

  1424. the outsider,

  1425. the ones who

  1426. should never

  1427. get in,

  1428. the people

  1429. who should

  1430. be excluded.

  1431. I'm going

  1432. to make it

  1433. possible for

  1434. them to

  1435. come in.

  1436. those who

  1437. acknowledge

  1438. me, I

  1439. will record.

  1440. I'm going

  1441. to write

  1442. their names

  1443. down and

  1444. make sure

  1445. that they're

  1446. going to

  1447. be there.

  1448. You know,

  1449. to acknowledge

  1450. God is

  1451. not just

  1452. giving some

  1453. intellectual nod

  1454. and say,

  1455. yep, I

  1456. know God

  1457. exists and

  1458. that's fine.

  1459. No, it

  1460. means to

  1461. trust him

  1462. with your

  1463. whole life.

  1464. It means

  1465. to say,

  1466. he is the

  1467. king of

  1468. the city

  1469. and I'll

  1470. live to

  1471. serve him

  1472. and I'll

  1473. live under

  1474. him.

  1475. It means

  1476. that without

  1477. him, we

  1478. will never

  1479. get into

  1480. the city.

  1481. It all

  1482. comes down

  1483. to grace.

  1484. Not because

  1485. of anything

  1486. we have

  1487. done.

  1488. Not because

  1489. of anything

  1490. that I

  1491. could ever

  1492. do that

  1493. will get

  1494. me into

  1495. the city.

  1496. It's all

  1497. because of

  1498. what God

  1499. has done

  1500. for me.

  1501. It's because

  1502. of his

  1503. kindness and

  1504. his mercy.

  1505. This is a

  1506. city where

  1507. God brings

  1508. undeserving

  1509. outsiders

  1510. in and

  1511. he blesses

  1512. them.

  1513. And let

  1514. me just

  1515. leave us

  1516. with this

  1517. final thought.

  1518. We've got

  1519. three questions.

  1520. Where the

  1521. city is,

  1522. how we get

  1523. into the

  1524. city and

  1525. who can

  1526. come.

  1527. If God

  1528. has welcomed

  1529. you and

  1530. me and

  1531. you have

  1532. trusted in

  1533. Jesus and

  1534. you know

  1535. you're going

  1536. to that

  1537. city and

  1538. you're

  1539. welcomed

  1540. into that

  1541. city,

  1542. then we

  1543. should bring

  1544. that same

  1545. welcome to

  1546. other people

  1547. and say to

  1548. them also,

  1549. you too are

  1550. welcomed into

  1551. the city.

  1552. That's the

  1553. message that

  1554. you guys and

  1555. everybody else

  1556. who's going to

  1557. be involved in

  1558. Kinsale.

  1559. That's what

  1560. you're saying

  1561. to the people

  1562. of Kinsale.

  1563. You are

  1564. welcome into

  1565. the city of

  1566. God.

  1567. God's

  1568. and here's

  1569. how you

  1570. can be

  1571. part of

  1572. it.

  1573. We can

  1574. never exclude

  1575. anybody.

  1576. That's not

  1577. our job.

  1578. Our job is

  1579. to give the

  1580. invite and

  1581. to welcome

  1582. so that they

  1583. may enjoy

  1584. all that God

  1585. has to give.

  1586. So that is

  1587. the eternal

  1588. city.

  1589. It's the city

  1590. we all dream

  1591. of and all

  1592. long for.

  1593. But it's a

  1594. reality through

  1595. Jesus Christ.

  1596. let's pray.

  1597. Father we

  1598. thank you for

  1599. this wonderful

  1600. picture and

  1601. image of the

  1602. great city.

  1603. Thank you

  1604. that it is

  1605. everything that

  1606. we ever dream

  1607. of.

  1608. Thank you

  1609. that it's all

  1610. possible through

  1611. Jesus.

  1612. Thank you

  1613. that you've

  1614. welcomed us.

  1615. and please

  1616. help us if

  1617. we are not

  1618. there yet

  1619. that we

  1620. would trust

  1621. you and

  1622. know that

  1623. we can be

  1624. part of it.

  1625. We ask

  1626. this in

  1627. Jesus name.

  1628. Amen.

  1629. Well we're

  1630. going to

  1631. sing

  1632. our

  1633. God

  1634. God
