  1. Thanks, Justy. Well, keep that psalm open and we're going to follow it through together.

  2. Again, if there's any questions at any time through what we look at on a Sunday morning,

  3. then please feel free to chat with me afterwards or raise anything that you want to.

  4. Well, let's pray and ask for God's help.

  5. Our Father God, we thank you that you are indeed great.

  6. And we ask that you would help us to better understand your greatness,

  7. but not just to know it in our heads, but also to experience it in our hearts and in our lives day by day.

  8. And for that to happen, we need your spirit to be at work in us.

  9. And we pray that he would be at work in our lives even now as we read and as we listen.

  10. And as we think through what your word is saying.

  11. So we ask for your help in this, in Jesus' name. Amen.

  12. A few years ago, the author Christopher Hitchens, who's a leading atheist, he's since died,

  13. but his book is still very influential.

  14. He wrote a book called God is Not Great.

  15. His argument was simply this.

  16. Rather than being the great hope of the world, God, or the very idea of God,

  17. is the reason why the world is in such a mess.

  18. In other words, if we can get rid of God, then the world wouldn't have all the problems.

  19. Listen to what he says.

  20. This is a quote from his book.

  21. This is what he says about God.

  22. He doesn't have a lot of time for God.

  23. Now that's not an uncommon thought.

  24. Many people today believe that.

  25. You might even think it.

  26. People who you work with and socialize with will believe it.

  27. They simply think that God is not great.

  28. In fact, people see God as being a problem.

  29. And if we can remove God, then things would be better.

  30. In contrast to that, though, is the author of Psalm 103.

  31. Here the writer claims that God is great and that we should worship him.

  32. So look how it says,

  33. So look how it starts in verse 1.

  34. He says,

  35. Praise the Lord, O my soul, all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

  36. And then look how it finishes, the very last line.

  37. Praise the Lord, O my soul.

  38. So the whole psalm from beginning right to the very end is a reason for why we should worship God.

  39. In fact, he claims that everyone and everything should praise and worship God because he is great.

  40. So look at verse 21.

  41. He says,

  42. Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts.

  43. You his servants who do his will.

  44. Praise the Lord, all his works.

  45. Everywhere.

  46. There's nothing excluded.

  47. Everywhere in his dominion.

  48. Praise the Lord, O my soul.

  49. Now that's a big claim.

  50. When increasingly people are becoming more and more anti-God.

  51. People will say,

  52. Well, why should I worship God?

  53. What has he ever done for me?

  54. Why should I give my devotion to God?

  55. What makes God better than anybody else?

  56. So the question we want to ask is,

  57. Is God great?

  58. Or is God not great?

  59. Well, you can draw your own conclusions as we look through this psalm together.

  60. Is God great?

  61. Or is he not great?

  62. Well, as we look through this psalm,

  63. we're going to look at four pairings that help us to capture what I think is the greatness of God

  64. and why we should worship him.

  65. Four pairings that capture the greatness of God.

  66. First,

  67. forgiving and forgetting.

  68. I wonder as you listen,

  69. can you remember anything that you have said or done that you know is wrong?

  70. Can you think of anything that you've said or done that you know is wrong?

  71. We don't have to think very long, do we?

  72. It's quite easy.

  73. Because we all have things that we regret.

  74. Oh, wish I wish I hadn't done that or said that.

  75. And no matter how hard we try,

  76. there are some things we can just never forget.

  77. Even as we sit right now,

  78. there are those things from the past that just keep on haunting us and come back to us time and time again.

  79. It seems we have an inability to forget our past and to forget our sin.

  80. In contrast to that, God not only forgives, but he also forgets our sin.

  81. Look at verse 2.

  82. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your sins.

  83. Do you know what?

  84. There's nothing too big and there's nothing too great.

  85. He will forgive the past, he will forgive your present, and he will forgive your future.

  86. Nothing is too big.

  87. But that's not all.

  88. Look at the rest of verse 3.

  89. He tells us there that he heals all our diseases.

  90. Now the difference there between sin, forgiving all our sins, and healing all our sickness,

  91. is what we might say is timing.

  92. When we confess our sin to God, he immediately forgives.

  93. Straight away, we can know his forgiveness.

  94. When we ask God for his healing, it is usually future.

  95. Not always, but usually future.

  96. That is, not until we are in heaven will we know his complete and full healing.

  97. So God forgives us now, that's the teaching of the Bible,

  98. and God will fully and completely heal in time.

  99. But he forgives immediately.

  100. But he doesn't just only forgive, he also forgets.

  101. Look down at verse 11.

  102. For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

  103. so great is his love for those who fear him.

  104. You know when we try to measure, or if you try to measure,

  105. God's love towards us,

  106. we find that his love is immeasurable.

  107. We live in a galaxy that's called the Milky Way.

  108. Our next closest galaxy to us is called Andromeda.

  109. It's 2.5 million light-years away.

  110. One light-year is 6 trillion miles.

  111. So you can do the maths, okay?

  112. 2.5 million light-years away.

  113. One light-year is 6 trillion miles.

  114. That's just the next galaxy.

  115. And what does it say there in verse 11?

  116. What does it say about God's love?

  117. For as far as the heavens are above the earth,

  118. so great is his love.

  119. It's immeasurable.

  120. It's beyond comprehension.

  121. It's so vast.

  122. It's so great.

  123. And as an expression of his great love towards us,

  124. what has he done?

  125. Look at verse 12.

  126. As far as the east is from the west,

  127. so far as he removed our transgressions from us.

  128. Just as God's love is immeasurable,

  129. so God's removing of our sin,

  130. or the way I phrase it here,

  131. forgetting it,

  132. it doesn't mean that he ignores it.

  133. It means that when he forgives us,

  134. he no longer holds it against us.

  135. He removes our sin from us.

  136. And that gap is immeasurable.

  137. It's infinite.

  138. It's like God has a record on computer

  139. of all the things that we've ever said,

  140. or thought,

  141. or done wrong.

  142. All there on file.

  143. And when we confess,

  144. he clicks select all.

  145. And then he clicks delete.

  146. There's no undo button.

  147. It's irretrievable.

  148. It's gone.

  149. It's wiped out.

  150. Never to be known or held against us again.

  151. This is the greatness of God

  152. in contrast to our inability

  153. to be able to forgive each other

  154. or to be able to forget our past.

  155. That is why we should worship God.

  156. No one else can do what God can do for us.

  157. So he forgives and he forgets.

  158. Second pairing.

  159. He redeems and he renews.

  160. I know some of you yesterday

  161. were walking up the mountains.

  162. Well, when we were younger,

  163. our family used to go for long walks

  164. up the Cummerah Mountains.

  165. And on one of those walks,

  166. my elder brother, Philip,

  167. was running away out ahead of us all.

  168. And then all of a sudden,

  169. he just disappeared.

  170. Just vanished.

  171. Didn't know where he'd gone

  172. until we got up to

  173. as far as we had last seen him.

  174. And there he was,

  175. ten feet down

  176. in this great big bog pit

  177. at the bottom.

  178. And he couldn't get out.

  179. And the only way that he could get out

  180. was for my dad to actually

  181. reach down,

  182. climb down,

  183. and pull him out.

  184. Well, look what it says

  185. about us in verse 4.

  186. We are described

  187. as being in a pit.

  188. Verse 4.

  189. He redeems your life

  190. from the pit.

  191. Now, what happened to my brother

  192. was extremely funny

  193. to all of us looking on.

  194. We thought it was hilarious.

  195. But for us being in this pit,

  196. it's being in a state

  197. where we are beyond self-redemption.

  198. We can't rescue ourselves.

  199. We can't do anything about it.

  200. And it isn't funny.

  201. In fact, the pit,

  202. as the Bible describes it

  203. the whole way through,

  204. is like we are on our way.

  205. It's a path that leads to hell,

  206. which is eternal separation from God

  207. and from all that is good.

  208. But God has redeemed us.

  209. That means he has reached down to us

  210. through his son, Jesus Christ,

  211. and he has pulled us up out of that pit.

  212. He's rescued us.

  213. He's delivered us.

  214. And instead of hell hanging over us,

  215. look what we have in place.

  216. Look at the rest of verse 4.

  217. He redeems your life from the pit

  218. and now crowns you

  219. with love and compassion.

  220. What a contrast.

  221. No longer treated

  222. as a rebellious enemy,

  223. but now treasured

  224. as his own child.

  225. But he not only redeems,

  226. he renews us.

  227. Verse 5.

  228. He satisfies our desires

  229. with good things

  230. so that our youth

  231. is renewed like the eagles.

  232. It's a picture of just reversing

  233. our whole life.

  234. He fills us

  235. and he satisfies us

  236. like nothing

  237. and no one else can.

  238. It's like he's giving us

  239. a complete fresh start

  240. from the pit

  241. to a crown of life

  242. to a fresh start

  243. so that,

  244. look at the end of verse 5,

  245. your youth

  246. is renewed like the eagles.

  247. Well, maybe you don't feel

  248. like an eagle this morning.

  249. Maybe you don't feel

  250. very young and youthful.

  251. But this is picture language.

  252. And it's all picture language

  253. about resting in God's strength

  254. and God's abilities.

  255. And I'm sure we've all seen

  256. the nature programs,

  257. whether it's...

  258. Oh, his name's gone from me now.

  259. David Attenborough, thank you.

  260. Any of those kind of nature programs.

  261. And we see the eagles

  262. flying effortlessly

  263. over the mountains.

  264. And what they do is

  265. they catch the warm thermals

  266. and it lifts them up

  267. and they just travel

  268. from mile after mile.

  269. Well, as God renews our life,

  270. as he redeems us from the pit,

  271. crowns us with love

  272. and compassion,

  273. it's as if we are carried

  274. along daily

  275. by the wind of grace.

  276. His strength

  277. bringing us through life

  278. as we face

  279. every kind of trial

  280. and circumstance.

  281. This is the greatness

  282. of God

  283. in contrast to our inability

  284. to change

  285. or to do anything

  286. about our own circumstances.

  287. This is why

  288. we should worship God.

  289. Nobody else

  290. can do

  291. what God can do.

  292. The third pairing.

  293. Unfailing love

  294. and undeserved mercy.

  295. Look at verse 6.

  296. The Lord works righteousness

  297. and justice

  298. for all the oppressed.

  299. God always does

  300. what is right

  301. and he always does

  302. what is good.

  303. His ways are just.

  304. They're perfect.

  305. He never gets anything wrong.

  306. And what follows

  307. is an example

  308. of his rightness

  309. in the way

  310. he deals with people.

  311. Look at verse 7.

  312. He made known

  313. his ways to Moses

  314. and his deeds

  315. to the people of Israel.

  316. And what follows

  317. in this psalm

  318. is referring back

  319. to a time

  320. when God intervened

  321. into his people's lives

  322. with his love and mercy.

  323. And we want to go back

  324. to look at that.

  325. It's found in Exodus 32.

  326. Ralph actually picked up on it

  327. earlier on

  328. just before we were singing.

  329. So go back

  330. keep your finger

  331. in Psalm 103

  332. and go back to Exodus

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  333. chapter 32.

  334. So Psalm 103

    Psalms 103:7

  335. verse 7

  336. says he made known

  337. his ways to Moses

  338. his deeds

  339. to the people of Israel.

  340. And this illustrates

  341. what God did.

  342. So we're going to pick it up

  343. in Exodus 32.

  344. And remember

  345. the context here

  346. is that God's people

  347. have been rescued

  348. from slavery

  349. in Egypt.

  350. God has defeated

  351. their enemies

  352. he's led them

  353. through the Red Sea

  354. he's brought them

  355. into a new land

  356. to a new home

  357. they have all the possessions

  358. that they need

  359. and now Moses

  360. their leader

  361. has gone to talk

  362. to God

  363. on the mountain

  364. and look what happens

  365. chapter 32

  366. verse 7

  367. Then the Lord

  368. said to Moses

  369. go down

  370. because your people

  371. whom you bought up

  372. out of Egypt

  373. have become corrupt.

  374. They have been quick

  375. to turn away

  376. from what I commanded them

  377. and have made themselves

  378. an idol

  379. cast in the shape

  380. of a calf.

  381. They have bowed down

  382. to it

  383. and sacrificed to it

  384. and have said

  385. these are your gods

  386. O Israel

  387. who bought you up

  388. out of Egypt.

  389. So quickly

  390. they have turned

  391. their backs on God

  392. after all

  393. that he has done

  394. for them

  395. and God is rightfully

  396. angry

  397. and look how God

  398. responds in verse 9

  399. He says

  400. I have seen

  401. these people

  402. the Lord said

  403. to Moses

  404. they are stiff-necked

  405. people

  406. in other words

  407. they're just stubborn

  408. now leave me alone

  409. so that my anger

  410. may burn against them

  411. and that I may

  412. destroy them

  413. then I will make you

  414. into a great nation.

  415. That's what they deserve

  416. but Moses

  417. appeals

  418. to God's

  419. character

  420. to his

  421. unfailing love

  422. and his

  423. undeserved

  424. mercy

  425. and look what he says

  426. verse 11

  427. Moses sought

  428. the favour

  429. of the Lord

  430. his God

  431. O Lord

  432. he said

  433. why should

  434. your anger

  435. burn against

  436. your people

  437. whom you bought

  438. out of Egypt

  439. with great power

  440. and a mighty hand

  441. look at the end

  442. of verse 12

  443. turn

  444. from your

  445. fierce anger

  446. relent

  447. and do not

  448. bring disaster

  449. on your people

  450. and what does God

  451. do?

  452. look at verse 14

  453. then the Lord

  454. relented

  455. and did not

  456. bring on

  457. his people

  458. the disaster

  459. he had

  460. threatened

  461. that

  462. is

  463. unfailing

  464. love

  465. that

  466. is

  467. undeserved

  468. mercy

  469. in fact

  470. God

  471. renews

  472. his relationship

  473. with his people

  474. even though

  475. they'd

  476. turned their

  477. backs on him

  478. God

  479. commits himself

  480. to his people

  481. again

  482. and this is

  483. what he says

  484. in Exodus

    Exodus 34:6–7

  485. 34

  486. verses 6

  487. through 7

  488. 34

  489. verse 6

  490. through 7

  491. this is the

  492. completion

  493. of this

  494. whole story

  495. and God

  496. passed in front

  497. of Moses

  498. proclaiming

  499. the Lord

  500. the Lord

  501. the compassionate

  502. and gracious

  503. God

  504. slow to

  505. anger

  506. abounding

  507. in love

  508. and faithfulness

  509. maintaining

  510. love

  511. to thousands

  512. forgiving

  513. wickedness

  514. rebellion

  515. and sin

  516. back to

  517. Psalm 103

  518. you see

  519. that's what

  520. we have

  521. quoted

  522. in Psalm 103

    Psalms 103:8

  523. verse 8

  524. this is what

  525. God made

  526. known to his

  527. people

  528. verse 8

  529. the Lord

  530. is compassionate

  531. and gracious

  532. slow to

  533. anger

  534. and abounding

  535. in love

  536. now let's

  537. just reflect

  538. for a minute

  539. how has

  540. God

  541. intervened

  542. into

  543. our lives

  544. what has

  545. he done

  546. for us

  547. forgiven

  548. us

  549. removed

  550. or forgotten

  551. our sin

  552. redeemed

  553. us

  554. and renewed

  555. us

  556. and how

  557. many times

  558. have we

  559. turned our

  560. back on

  561. him

  562. being

  563. stubborn

  564. lived our

  565. own way

  566. and how

  567. does God

  568. respond

  569. look at

  570. Psalm 103

    Psalms 103:9

  571. verse 9

  572. he will not

  573. always accuse

  574. nor will he

  575. harbor his

  576. anger forever

  577. he does

  578. not treat

  579. us

  580. as our

  581. sins

  582. deserve

  583. or repay

  584. us

  585. according to

  586. our

  587. iniquities

  588. that

  589. is the

  590. greatness

  591. of God

  592. in contrast

  593. to our

  594. continued

  595. failure

  596. and

  597. disobedience

  598. this is

  599. how God

  600. is

  601. towards

  602. us

  603. that is

  604. why we

  605. should

  606. worship

  607. God

  608. the

  609. fourth

  610. pairing

  611. compassionate

  612. father

  613. and

  614. continuous

  615. love

  616. I know

  617. we have

  618. lots of

  619. little

  620. babies

  621. here in

  622. the family

  623. of this

  624. church

  625. and I'm

  626. always

  627. amazed

  628. at the

  629. size

  630. of a

  631. newborn

  632. baby

  633. so

  634. tiny

  635. so

  636. delicate

  637. so

  638. fragile

  639. totally

  640. helpless

  641. they

  642. can't

  643. feed

  644. themselves

  645. they

  646. can't

  647. fend

  648. themselves

  649. in

  650. response

  651. mum

  652. and dad

  653. has to

  654. provide

  655. them

  656. with

  657. everything

  658. that

  659. they

  660. need

  661. well

  662. in the

  663. same

  664. way

  665. God

  666. sees

  667. us

  668. as

  669. delicate

  670. and

  671. totally

  672. helpless

  673. oh yeah

  674. we like

  675. to play

  676. tough

  677. we like

  678. to think

  679. of ourselves

  680. as being

  681. independent

  682. and don't

  683. need

  684. anyone

  685. or

  686. anything

  687. but look

  688. how God

  689. sees us

  690. verse 14

  691. for he

  692. knows

  693. how we

  694. are

  695. formed

  696. and he

  697. remembers

  698. that we

  699. are

  700. dust

  701. we'll

  702. die

  703. one day

  704. and we

  705. will be

  706. just

  707. dust

  708. but look

  709. how he

  710. responds

  711. to us

  712. knowing

  713. what we

  714. are like

  715. in verse

  716. 13

  717. as a

  718. father

  719. has

  720. compassion

  721. on his

  722. children

  723. so the

  724. Lord

  725. has

  726. compassion

  727. on those

  728. who

  729. fear him

  730. because

  731. he knows

  732. how we

  733. are formed

  734. he knows

  735. that we're

  736. dust

  737. compassion

  738. is seeing

  739. the

  740. helplessness

  741. and the

  742. inability

  743. of somebody

  744. else

  745. and reaching

  746. out to

  747. them

  748. and doing

  749. something

  750. for them

  751. and helping

  752. them

  753. and so

  754. that's

  755. what

  756. God

  757. has

  758. done

  759. he

  760. provides

  761. us

  762. with

  763. all

  764. that

  765. we

  766. have

  767. he

  768. cares

  769. for

  770. us

  771. intimately

  772. he

  773. has

  774. compassion

  775. I know

  776. that some

  777. of you

  778. are

  779. gardeners

  780. and some

  781. of your

  782. gardens

  783. are probably

  784. looking very

  785. well

  786. at this

  787. time of

  788. year

  789. lots

  790. of flowers

  791. out

  792. the variety

  793. of colours

  794. that there

  795. are

  796. but you

  797. know

  798. yourself

  799. that within

  800. a few

  801. weeks

  802. those

  803. flowers

  804. will be

  805. a heap

  806. at the

  807. bottom

  808. of the

  809. compost

  810. rotting

  811. away

  812. that's

  813. how

  814. we

  815. are

  816. described

  817. so

  818. very

  819. fragile

  820. here

  821. one

  822. moment

  823. and then

  824. gone

  825. look at

  826. verse 15

  827. as for

  828. man

  829. his days

  830. are like

  831. grass

  832. he

  833. flourishes

  834. like the

  835. flower

  836. in the

  837. field

  838. the wind

  839. blows

  840. over it

  841. and it

  842. is gone

  843. and its

  844. place

  845. remembers

  846. it

  847. no more

  848. we're

  849. here

  850. and then

  851. we're

  852. gone

  853. I was

  854. only

  855. reminded

  856. of that

  857. just last

  858. week

  859. me and

  860. Kirsty

  861. went for

  862. a cycle

  863. ride

  864. and on

  865. our way

  866. back

  867. we came

  868. to the

  869. traffic

  870. lights

  871. to the

  872. pedestrian

  873. lights

  874. and we

  875. pressed

  876. it

  877. it went

  878. green

  879. and Kirsty

  880. was just

  881. on her

  882. way out

  883. onto the

  884. road

  885. and a

  886. car just

  887. went

  888. straight

  889. past

  890. one more

  891. second

  892. and a

  893. life would

  894. have

  895. gone

  896. one

  897. second

  898. we're

  899. here

  900. and we're

  901. gone

  902. but in

  903. contrast to

  904. our

  905. momentary

  906. and fragile

  907. life

  908. God's

  909. love

  910. is

  911. continuous

  912. and

  913. everlasting

  914. look at

  915. verse 17

  916. from

  917. everlasting

  918. to

  919. everlasting

  920. the

  921. Lord's

  922. love

  923. is with

  924. those

  925. who

  926. fear

  927. him

  928. and

  929. his

  930. righteousness

  931. with

  932. their

  933. children's

  934. children

  935. our

  936. life

  937. may

  938. end

  939. but the

  940. Bible

  941. tells us

  942. that

  943. before

  944. the

  945. creation

  946. of the

  947. world

  948. God

  949. loved

  950. us

  951. it

  952. goes on

  953. to expand

  954. that

  955. neither

  956. death

  957. nor

  958. life

  959. neither

  960. the

  961. present

  962. nor

  963. the

  964. future

  965. nor

  966. any

  967. powers

  968. or

  969. anything

  970. in

  971. all

  972. creation

  973. is able

  974. to

  975. separate

  976. us

  977. from

  978. God's

  979. love

  980. God's

  981. love

  982. is

  983. continuous

  984. and

  985. constant

  986. not even

  987. our own

  988. sin

  989. not even

  990. Satan

  991. not even

  992. sickness

  993. can

  994. separate

  995. us

  996. from

  997. God's

  998. everlasting

  999. and

  1000. continuous

  1001. love

  1002. that is

  1003. the

  1004. greatness

  1005. of God

  1006. in

  1007. contrast

  1008. to

  1009. our

  1010. weak

  1011. delicate

  1012. and

  1013. frail

  1014. lives

  1015. that is

  1016. why we

  1017. should

  1018. worship

  1019. God

  1020. no one

  1021. else

  1022. can do

  1023. what God

  1024. says he

  1025. can do

  1026. now before

  1027. we wrap

  1028. up

  1029. there is

  1030. one

  1031. critical

  1032. question

  1033. to ask

  1034. and it's

  1035. simply

  1036. this

  1037. how do

  1038. I

  1039. experience

  1040. the

  1041. greatness

  1042. of God

  1043. how do

  1044. I take

  1045. what's

  1046. on the

  1047. screen

  1048. how do

  1049. I take

  1050. what's

  1051. written

  1052. in my

  1053. Bible

  1054. these

  1055. words

  1056. how do

  1057. I know

  1058. his

  1059. forgiveness

  1060. in here

  1061. his

  1062. redemption

  1063. his

  1064. compassion

  1065. how can

  1066. I sense

  1067. it

  1068. how can

  1069. I know

  1070. it for

  1071. real

  1072. in my

  1073. own

  1074. life

  1075. every

  1076. day

  1077. well

  1078. God's

  1079. greatness

  1080. is always

  1081. true

  1082. and it

  1083. can always

  1084. be

  1085. experienced

  1086. right here

  1087. right now

  1088. and here's

  1089. how

  1090. look at

  1091. the end

  1092. of verse

  1093. 11

  1094. so great

  1095. is his

  1096. love

  1097. for

  1098. who

  1099. for

  1100. those

  1101. who

  1102. fear

  1103. him

  1104. look at

  1105. verse

  1106. 13

  1107. as a

  1108. father has

  1109. compassion

  1110. on his

  1111. children

  1112. so the

  1113. Lord has

  1114. compassion

  1115. on

  1116. those

  1117. who

  1118. fear

  1119. him

  1120. verse

  1121. 17

  1122. from

  1123. everlasting

  1124. to

  1125. everlasting

  1126. the

  1127. Lord's

  1128. love

  1129. is

  1130. with

  1131. those

  1132. who

  1133. fear

  1134. him

  1135. God's

  1136. greatness

  1137. is always

  1138. true

  1139. it's

  1140. never

  1141. changing

  1142. but it

  1143. only

  1144. becomes

  1145. a reality

  1146. in our

  1147. own

  1148. lives

  1149. when we

  1150. fear

  1151. God

  1152. now

  1153. fear

  1154. kind of

  1155. seems a

  1156. harsh word

  1157. doesn't

  1158. it

  1159. we don't

  1160. like the

  1161. idea of

  1162. fear

  1163. what does

  1164. it mean

  1165. well it

  1166. does not

  1167. mean being

  1168. scared and

  1169. shaking in

  1170. the corner

  1171. as if you

  1172. were cowering

  1173. from some

  1174. kind of

  1175. vindictive

  1176. bully

  1177. that's what

  1178. Christopher

  1179. Hitchens

  1180. and others

  1181. would want

  1182. us to

  1183. believe

  1184. that God

  1185. is just

  1186. mean

  1187. and a

  1188. bully

  1189. and he

  1190. makes you

  1191. scared

  1192. but fear

  1193. in the

  1194. Bible

  1195. is

  1196. different

  1197. fear

  1198. in the

  1199. Bible

  1200. means

  1201. a

  1202. deep

  1203. awe

  1204. and

  1205. humble

  1206. respect

  1207. I think

  1208. the best

  1209. illustration

  1210. for this

  1211. is

  1212. in the

  1213. lion

  1214. the witch

  1215. in the

  1216. wardrobe

  1217. when Lucy

  1218. is with

  1219. the badgers

  1220. and she's

  1221. getting ready

  1222. to meet

  1223. Aslan

  1224. the lion

  1225. and this

  1226. comes from

  1227. a quote

  1228. from the

  1229. book

  1230. the joy

  1231. of fearing

  1232. God

  1233. and he

  1234. quotes it

  1235. this

  1236. is what

  1237. he says

  1238. or this

  1239. is what

  1240. Lucy

  1241. says

  1242. is he

  1243. quite

  1244. safe

  1245. I

  1246. shall

  1247. feel

  1248. rather

  1249. nervous

  1250. about

  1251. meeting

  1252. a

  1253. lion

  1254. that

  1255. you

  1256. will

  1257. dearie

  1258. and no

  1259. mistake

  1260. said

  1261. Mrs

  1262. Bieber

  1263. if

  1264. there's

  1265. anyone

  1266. who can

  1267. appear

  1268. before

  1269. Aslan

  1270. without

  1271. their

  1272. knees

  1273. knocking

  1274. they're

  1275. either

  1276. braver

  1277. than

  1278. most

  1279. or

  1280. just

  1281. plain

  1282. silly

  1283. then he

  1284. isn't

  1285. safe

  1286. said

  1287. Lucy

  1288. safe

  1289. said

  1290. Mr

  1291. Beaver

  1292. don't

  1293. you

  1294. hear

  1295. what

  1296. Mrs

  1297. Beaver

  1298. tells

  1299. you

  1300. who

  1301. said

  1302. anything

  1303. about

  1304. safe

  1305. of course

  1306. he

  1307. isn't

  1308. safe

  1309. but

  1310. he's

  1311. good

  1312. he's

  1313. the

  1314. king

  1315. I

  1316. tell

  1317. you

  1318. to

  1319. come

  1320. before

  1321. God

  1322. with

  1323. fear

  1324. is

  1325. like

  1326. Lucy

  1327. as

  1328. she

  1329. came

  1330. to

  1331. Aslan

  1332. there's

  1333. this

  1334. humble

  1335. awe

  1336. this

  1337. deep

  1338. respect

  1339. and

  1340. if

  1341. we

  1342. are

  1343. to

  1344. experience

  1345. the

  1346. goodness

  1347. and

  1348. the

  1349. greatness

  1350. of

  1351. God

  1352. if

  1353. we

  1354. are

  1355. going

  1356. to

  1357. know

  1358. his

  1359. forgiveness

  1360. his

  1361. redemption

  1362. his

  1363. compassion

  1364. his

  1365. unfailing

  1366. love

  1367. we

  1368. must

  1369. come

  1370. before

  1371. him

  1372. with

  1373. fear

  1374. and

  1375. if

  1376. we

  1377. don't

  1378. know

  1379. and

  1380. we

  1381. don't

  1382. experience

  1383. the

  1384. forgiveness

  1385. of

  1386. God

  1387. in

  1388. our

  1389. lives

  1390. or

  1391. his

  1392. compassion

  1393. well

  1394. it's

  1395. simply

  1396. because

  1397. we

  1398. do

  1399. not

  1400. worship

  1401. God

  1402. because

  1403. to

  1404. worship

  1405. God

  1406. is

  1407. this

  1408. fear

  1409. of

  1410. submitting

  1411. to

  1412. him

  1413. and

  1414. making

  1415. him

  1416. king

  1417. of

  1418. your

  1419. life

  1420. and

  1421. living

  1422. under

  1423. his

  1424. rule

  1425. and

  1426. authority

  1427. look

  1428. at

  1429. verse

  1430. 19

  1431. the

  1432. Lord

  1433. has

  1434. established

  1435. his

  1436. throne

  1437. in

  1438. heaven

  1439. and

  1440. his

  1441. kingdom

  1442. rules

  1443. over

  1444. all

  1445. he

  1446. wants

  1447. to

  1448. rule

  1449. over

  1450. every

  1451. area

  1452. of

  1453. your

  1454. life

  1455. there

  1456. is

  1457. not

  1458. one

  1459. part

  1460. of

  1461. your

  1462. life

  1463. that

  1464. is

  1465. outside

  1466. of

  1467. his

  1468. rule

  1469. or

  1470. authority

  1471. and

  1472. this

  1473. is

  1474. what

  1475. worship

  1476. is

  1477. it's

  1478. to

  1479. come

  1480. before

  1481. God

  1482. in

  1483. fear

  1484. before

  1485. a

  1486. great

  1487. king

  1488. to

  1489. bow

  1490. in

  1491. humility

  1492. to

  1493. serve

  1494. him

  1495. with

  1496. joy

  1497. to

  1498. delight

  1499. in

  1500. his

  1501. love

  1502. and

  1503. as

  1504. we

  1505. worship

  1506. him

  1507. with

  1508. fear

  1509. then

  1510. we

  1511. begin

  1512. to

  1513. know

  1514. and

  1515. experience

  1516. and

  1517. enjoy

  1518. his

  1519. forgiveness

  1520. of

  1521. all

  1522. of

  1523. our

  1524. sin

  1525. we

  1526. come

  1527. to

  1528. appreciate

  1529. his

  1530. redemption

  1531. in

  1532. our

  1533. lives

  1534. and

  1535. crowning

  1536. us

  1537. with

  1538. love

  1539. and

  1540. compassion

  1541. and

  1542. we

  1543. experience

  1544. that

  1545. deep

  1546. unending

  1547. everlasting

  1548. love

  1549. and

  1550. his

  1551. compassion

  1552. that

  1553. reaches

  1554. down

  1555. to

  1556. frail

  1557. people

  1558. like

  1559. us

  1560. God

  1561. is

  1562. great

  1563. and

  1564. we

  1565. should

  1566. worship

  1567. him

  1568. in

  1569. fear

  1570. and

  1571. we

  1572. will

  1573. know

  1574. and

  1575. enjoy

  1576. him

  1577. as

  1578. a

  1579. great

  1580. God

  1581. let's

  1582. pray

  1583. together

  1584. our

  1585. father

  1586. god

  1587. you

  1588. have

  1589. shown

  1590. yourself

  1591. to be

  1592. great

  1593. you

  1594. have

  1595. made

  1596. this

  1597. universe

  1598. and

  1599. you

  1600. have

  1601. made

  1602. us

  1603. the

  1604. very

  1605. breath

  1606. that

  1607. we

  1608. breathe

  1609. right

  1610. now

  1611. is

  1612. something

  1613. you

  1614. have

  1615. given

  1616. to

  1617. us

  1618. you

  1619. sustain

  1620. us

  1621. you

  1622. keep

  1623. us

  1624. our

  1625. very

  1626. life

  1627. from

  1628. beginning

  1629. to

  1630. end

  1631. is

  1632. held

  1633. in

  1634. your

  1635. hands

  1636. and

  1637. yet

  1638. our

  1639. life

  1640. is

  1641. so

  1642. weak

  1643. so

  1644. fragile

  1645. so

  1646. delicate

  1647. thank

  1648. you

  1649. that

  1650. you

  1651. have

  1652. shown

  1653. your

  1654. greatness

  1655. to

  1656. us

  1657. and

  1658. that

  1659. we

  1660. can

  1661. come

  1662. to

  1663. you

  1664. and

  1665. find

  1666. that

  1667. forgiveness

  1668. and

  1669. that

  1670. you

  1671. would

  1672. no

  1673. longer

  1674. hold

  1675. our

  1676. sin

  1677. against

  1678. us

  1679. through

  1680. Jesus

  1681. we

  1682. thank

  1683. you

  1684. and

  1685. it's

  1686. our

  1687. desire

  1688. that

  1689. we

  1690. would

  1691. know

  1692. and

  1693. experience

  1694. your

  1695. love

  1696. and

  1697. compassion

  1698. your

  1699. redemption

  1700. and

  1701. your

  1702. renewing

  1703. in

  1704. our

  1705. lives

  1706. your

  1707. mercy

  1708. every

  1709. day

  1710. so

  1711. help

  1712. us

  1713. to

  1714. bow

  1715. before

  1716. you

  1717. as

  1718. king

  1719. acknowledge

  1720. your

  1721. lordship

  1722. and

  1723. your

  1724. authority

  1725. over

  1726. every

  1727. area

  1728. of

  1729. our

  1730. life

  1731. we

  1732. thank

  1733. you

  1734. that

  1735. you

  1736. are

  1737. a

  1738. great

  1739. God

  1740. in

  1741. Jesus

  1742. name

  1743. amen

  1744. well

  1745. we're

  1746. going

  1747. to

  1748. sing

  1749. a

  1750. song

  1751. that

  1752. really

  1753. tried
