  1. 4. Let's read.

  2. Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive

  3. to my cry for mercy. If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

  4. But with you there is forgiveness, therefore you are feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul

  5. waits, and in his word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait

  6. for the morning, more than the watchmen wait for the morning. O Israel, put your hope in

  7. the Lord. For with the Lord is unfailing love, and with him is full redemption. He himself

  8. will redeem Israel from all their sins.

  9. Well, I'm going to ask Michael. He's going to come up now and preach this morning.

  10. Well, before we look at this psalm, let's pray together. Lord, we thank you that you've

  11. given us your word. We thank you for the words of the psalmist all those years ago. We pray,

  12. O Lord, that you will speak to each one of us as individuals and corporately as we look

  13. together at these ancient words, that they might become relevant to our own lives, to our

  14. own experience. And we pray, O Father God, that if we are in the depths this morning as the psalmist

  15. was, so we will put our hope in the Lord. Lord, help us to this end, we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  16. Amen. Well, Psalm 130 is a psalm we're looking at, and I'm told that it was Luther's, one of Luther's

  17. favorite psalms. He liked this psalm very much. He was prone to despair with all the things that

  18. were going on at the time of the Reformation and all the battles he had to fight. And so he often

  19. found himself in the depths. Another writer has spoken about this psalm as being like steps to heaven.

  20. He likens the psalm to a spiritual barometer. You know, before we had the internet and we could look

  21. up the five-day forecast, you had the barometer and it marked the pressures that were going on and

  22. what the weather was likely to be over the coming days. Well, certainly the psalmist begins right in

  23. the depths. Spiritually, things are very, very low. It's as though, spiritually speaking, the clouds are

  24. touching the ground. And out of those depths, he cries to the Lord. He cries to his God.

  25. But you also notice, as you look at this psalm, that there is not just that spiritual barometer,

  26. but there is also the progression in the psalm. Because as the psalmist comes to the end of this

  27. short psalm, he is in heaven, as it were, as he looks for that full redemption that the Lord will

  28. redeem Israel from all their sins. So he has come through the darkness of the first verse

  29. to the unfailing love of the Lord and the full redemption that is promised to all God's people

  30. in the glory of heaven. It's a song of ascent.

  31. You know, these were psalms that were sung as the pilgrims made their way up to Jerusalem.

  32. There's a number of them here, all linked together, a song of ascent.

  33. They were sung by the pilgrims as they made their way up to Jerusalem at the various festivals,

  34. at Passover, for example. This was a psalm that would have been sung by Jesus himself as he made his way

  35. up to the temple. He also would have been singing along with David of old and the other psalmists

  36. who penned these psalms. And it is a song of progression. It is a song of ascent. There's a

  37. rising note in it. Out of the depths I cry. And then the redemption of Israel. And I thought of the

  38. Lord Jesus singing this psalm and how he would have thought about it. He would cry out of the depths.

  39. If there be any other way, let this cup pass from me, we're told. And his sweat was like drops of

  40. blood falling to the ground. Out of the depths he cried. Not because of sin, but for your sins and for

  41. my sins he cried out. And he knew that through his death there would be that full redemption. He would

  42. redeem Israel from all their sins. So it's a psalm of ascent. It's a psalm that rises. And I trust as we

  43. go through it, we too will rise, as it were, with wings like eagles. And we shall run and not be weary

  44. and walk and not faint. So let's divide the psalm. And we're going to divide it into four parts. And they

  45. divide easily for us into two verses each. The first part is desiring. And we have that in verses

  46. one and two. And I think we have here the desire of true prayer to God. Well, what was happening to the

  47. psalmist as he penned these words? Well, we can't be absolutely certain, but certainly there was a trial of

  48. one sort or another. Perhaps he was surrounded by enemies. Perhaps death stared him in the face. Perhaps there was a

  49. pressure of family life. Perhaps there was illness. Perhaps there were national difficulties if David is the

  50. psalmist. All of these were the psalmist. All of these were reasons for him to cry out to God. But I think the

  51. emphasis lies in another direction. I think in some way or another he had failed the Lord. There was sin in his

  52. life. I think there was something that had happened, something that he had done that caused him to cry out from the

  53. depths of his being in true prayer as he desires God to intervene because of this sin that was in his life.

  54. And as he prays, we learn something of what it means to cry out to God as we sin and as we fail him.

  55. Notice that his prayer here is fervent. I cry to you. He desires God. His desire is directed to God, to you, O Lord.

  56. Now we have the slogans, don't we? Prayer changes things. We hear about the power of prayer.

  57. But so often when faith is weak, particularly when we are in the depths,

  58. we find it perhaps difficult to pray. And sometimes at that particular time the Spirit intercedes for us

  59. with groanings that can't be uttered. But the Lord knows our hearts. And he knows there is this desire

  60. to seek him to seek him to you, O Lord. It's not our prayers that will change the situation. It is God who

  61. changes situation. It is God who intervenes on our behalf when we are in the depths. He's desiring God to do it.

  62. As he comes, he sees who God is. He is the Lord. He is Jehovah. He is the Creator. He is the One of Almighty

  63. power. And as he cries, he says, O Lord, hear my voice. And he's absolutely dependent.

  64. He needs mercy. And only the Lord can provide that mercy. So we have, first of all, the desire of true

  65. prayer. But then there's this desire that I want to emphasize to be heard. He wants to be heard above

  66. everything else. He's a little bit like that blind man that we read of in Luke chapter 18 and verses 35 to 43.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  67. He has heard about Jesus. People were speaking about Jesus. And he desires the Lord Jesus because he is

  68. passing by. And he cries out because he wants to see. But others are saying, be quiet. Don't disturb him.

  69. Don't make this fuss. But he cries out all the more. He won't be silent because he's desperate.

  70. And that's the psalmist in the depths. Oh, Lord, hear my voice. Let your ear be attentive to my cry for mercy.

  71. He wants to be heard above everything else. Spurgeon has a little remark in his commentary on this psalm by saying this.

  72. It is all we ask. It is all we ask. And nothing less will content us. If the Lord will but hear us,

  73. we will leave it to his superior wisdom to decide whether he answers us or no. It is better for our prayer to be heard

  74. than answered. Have you ever thought of that? Sometimes we can ask for all the wrong reasons, can't we? And when we're in the depths,

  75. the Lord is teaching us. And he may not always bring us out of the depths. But in those depths, he is teaching us.

  76. And he allows us to go through these difficulties, these trials that we might learn of him. But he is hearing us.

  77. And if he is saying no to our requests, it is because of his superior wisdom.

  78. So the psalmist's desire is that he might be heard. And notice too, in these verses, it's a desire that continues.

  79. Now in our NIVs, his prayers are in the singular.

  80. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.

  81. If you have the ESV in front of you, it says this.

  82. Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy.

  83. And if you have the authorized version, it says,

  84. Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.

  85. In other words, it's not just one fleeting prayer.

  86. In the depths, he is crying out. And he's crying out again.

  87. And he's crying out the more.

  88. That the Lord will hear him.

  89. That the Lord will come to his aid.

  90. It is, if you like, the asking and the seeking and the knocking of prayer.

  91. Nothing will satisfy him apart from the Lord.

  92. He knows, even though he is in the depths, that God is gracious.

  93. That God is merciful.

  94. That his mercies are new every day.

  95. And he desires that mercy.

  96. How it will be shown.

  97. Well, he's content to leave that with God.

  98. But he keeps on calling out.

  99. How great is our desire for God.

  100. Are we a people that cast our cares upon the Lord?

  101. Do we long to be heard?

  102. And how consistent is our praying?

  103. Do we cry to him in the depths?

  104. Do we desire him?

  105. And if we're correct,

  106. that this is a psalm that was written

  107. because of some sin on his part,

  108. do we see the seriousness of sin

  109. that will want us to call out to him

  110. that we might know his forgiveness

  111. because we have sinned against him.

  112. And perhaps we don't call out sometimes like the psalmist

  113. because we have failed to see the seriousness of sin.

  114. David elsewhere says,

  115. Against thee, you only have I sinned.

  116. So there's a desiring of prayer

  117. in verses 1 and 2.

  118. Secondly, we have him reflecting

  119. in verses 3 and 4.

  120. To you, O Lord,

  121. if you, O Lord, kept a record of sins,

  122. O Lord, who could stand?

  123. But with you there is forgiveness,

  124. therefore you are feared.

  125. He's in the depths,

  126. almost certainly because of sin.

  127. The temptation, of course,

  128. would be for him to despair.

  129. God will never listen to me.

  130. But the psalmist does know

  131. something of the grace of God

  132. and he reflects upon that in verse 3.

  133. If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins,

  134. O Lord, who can stand?

  135. And he knows the answer to that question.

  136. He answers, in effect,

  137. that nobody could stand.

  138. He's conscious, you see, of his own sins.

  139. He's in the depths because of them.

  140. And he's also aware of God's holiness

  141. and his own unrighteousness.

  142. How can he come before God?

  143. How can he stand

  144. before the Lord God Almighty?

  145. You see, it's not just his present sins,

  146. whatever they were.

  147. They're all his past sins.

  148. And the list is long.

  149. He could go back and think of his childhood

  150. and how he'd failed the Lord in his childhood.

  151. He could look at his adolescence.

  152. And he could see the depth of his sins,

  153. how far he had gone.

  154. And as an adult,

  155. he had failed the Lord again and again.

  156. O Lord, if you kept a record of my sins,

  157. O Lord, who could stand?

  158. The list is long.

  159. No one could stand.

  160. But there's no one that does good,

  161. not even one.

  162. Not one sin.

  163. A past the eye of God.

  164. For he is the omniscient one.

  165. He sees all and knows all.

  166. What hope does he have of God hearing his voice?

  167. If every time he cried to God,

  168. God took out his book

  169. and recited his sins and his failures.

  170. And the same would be true

  171. of every one of us here this morning.

  172. What hope would we have?

  173. Who could stand?

  174. No, we're all guilty.

  175. We've all fallen short.

  176. But there's the grace of God

  177. and he reflects upon this.

  178. You see, he's not coming

  179. to plead his righteousness,

  180. his own righteousness,

  181. for he has none.

  182. He's not come pleading his own good works.

  183. His hope

  184. is in the graciousness of Jehovah,

  185. his God.

  186. The one who wipes the slate

  187. completely clean.

  188. The psalmist

  189. would have thought of the sacrifices

  190. that were made.

  191. Perhaps he would think of the Day of Atonement

  192. and the priest

  193. laying his hand on the scapegoat

  194. and that scapegoat

  195. being released into the wilderness.

  196. Perhaps he would think of

  197. a personal sacrifice

  198. that he had taken

  199. to the temple.

  200. And his sins

  201. had been laid upon that bullock.

  202. And the bullock

  203. had been slaughtered

  204. in his place.

  205. Yes, God was a God of grace

  206. and the sacrificial system

  207. pointed to that.

  208. But again and again

  209. the psalmists, of course,

  210. look forward to the coming

  211. of the Messiah.

  212. Messiah.

  213. As Psalm 22

  214. they pierced his hands

  215. and his feet.

  216. And it is on this basis

  217. that we can come.

  218. And as the psalmist

  219. look forward

  220. to the coming of Christ

  221. so we look back

  222. and see that Christ has come.

  223. That grace might be given

  224. to you and me.

  225. And that the slate

  226. can be wiped clean.

  227. So that even when we sin

  228. and fail

  229. after we become Christians

  230. there is forgiveness

  231. for us.

  232. Oh that we might reflect

  233. upon God's graciousness.

  234. That we might marvel

  235. to this morning

  236. that he is ready

  237. to hear our cries

  238. from the depths.

  239. Oh that we might marvel

  240. that we can come

  241. before him

  242. in the righteousness

  243. of the Lord

  244. Jesus Christ.

  245. Conscious yes

  246. of our sin

  247. but conscious

  248. also of the fact

  249. that the Lord

  250. is there for us.

  251. You see

  252. as he meditates

  253. upon these things

  254. as he reflects

  255. on God's graciousness

  256. he also sees

  257. wonderfully

  258. the forgiveness

  259. of God.

  260. For with you

  261. he says

  262. in verse 4

  263. there is forgiveness

  264. therefore

  265. you

  266. are

  267. feared.

  268. He plumbed

  269. the depths

  270. of sin

  271. but God

  272. is gracious

  273. and because

  274. he is gracious

  275. he forgives

  276. utterly

  277. and completely.

  278. he reflects

  279. that this forgiveness

  280. is there

  281. to be had

  282. and he needed it.

  283. And because

  284. God was gracious

  285. he was ready

  286. to give it.

  287. Does that mean

  288. that he is blasé

  289. about this forgiveness?

  290. No

  291. on the contrary

  292. there is a sense

  293. of all

  294. there is forgiveness

  295. therefore

  296. you

  297. are

  298. feared.

  299. The fear

  300. of God

  301. is sensible

  302. as he reflects

  303. on God's grace

  304. so there is

  305. this sensible

  306. this reverence

  307. that the Lord

  308. of heaven

  309. and earth

  310. should be ready

  311. to hear his cry

  312. from the depths

  313. he marvels

  314. and he wonders

  315. and he

  316. worships.

  317. Have you ever

  318. reflected

  319. upon the grace

  320. of God

  321. in your life?

  322. Have you

  323. meditated

  324. on the wonder

  325. of forgiveness?

  326. That an all

  327. holy God

  328. should love you

  329. in Christ

  330. and should be

  331. ready to forgive

  332. you utterly

  333. and completely?

  334. Does this

  335. cause you

  336. to be happy?

  337. yes it does

  338. I'm sure

  339. but does it

  340. conjure up

  341. this sense

  342. of awe

  343. and worship

  344. that God

  345. should love

  346. sinners

  347. like

  348. ourselves?

  349. Oh

  350. that the

  351. spirit of God

  352. would work

  353. in our lives

  354. that we

  355. might desire

  356. this God

  357. more

  358. and that we

  359. might reflect

  360. more and more

  361. upon his

  362. grace

  363. and the

  364. wonder of

  365. his

  366. forgiveness

  367. but thirdly

  368. there's the

  369. waiting

  370. verses 5

  371. and 6

  372. I

  373. wait

  374. for the

  375. Lord

  376. my soul

  377. waits

  378. and in his

  379. word

  380. I put

  381. my hope

  382. my soul

  383. waits

  384. for the

  385. Lord

  386. more than

  387. watchmen

  388. wait for

  389. the morning

  390. more than

  391. watchmen

  392. wait

  393. for

  394. the

  395. morning

  396. he's

  397. waiting

  398. in hope

  399. verse 5

  400. I

  401. wait

  402. for the

  403. Lord

  404. my soul

  405. waits

  406. and in

  407. his

  408. word

  409. I

  410. put

  411. my

  412. hope

  413. you

  414. see

  415. the

  416. progress

  417. he's

  418. making

  419. he's

  420. going

  421. forward

  422. he's

  423. no longer

  424. in the

  425. depths

  426. because

  427. he sees

  428. something

  429. of the

  430. grace

  431. and the

  432. forgiveness

  433. of God

  434. now

  435. he's

  436. waiting

  437. upon

  438. the

  439. Lord

  440. but

  441. this

  442. is

  443. not

  444. an

  445. idle

  446. waiting

  447. he's

  448. not

  449. twiddling

  450. his

  451. thumbs

  452. waiting

  453. for

  454. something

  455. that

  456. might

  457. or

  458. might

  459. not

  460. happen

  461. he's

  462. waiting

  463. in

  464. confidence

  465. he's

  466. waiting

  467. in

  468. faith

  469. and

  470. you

  471. notice

  472. how

  473. his

  474. whole

  475. soul

  476. is

  477. involved

  478. in

  479. this

  480. waiting

  481. I

  482. wait

  483. he

  484. says

  485. my

  486. soul

  487. waits

  488. and

  489. that's

  490. repeated

  491. in

  492. verse

  493. 6

  494. my

  495. soul

  496. waits

  497. if you

  498. like

  499. he's

  500. waiting

  501. with

  502. the

  503. whole

  504. of

  505. his

  506. being

  507. he's

  508. waiting

  509. with

  510. the

  511. involvement

  512. of

  513. his

  514. whole

  515. heart

  516. for

  517. God

  518. to

  519. come

  520. to

  521. him

  522. to

  523. intervene

  524. in

  525. his

  526. life

  527. and

  528. in

  529. his

  530. personal

  531. experience

  532. and

  533. how

  534. can

  535. he

  536. do

  537. this

  538. with

  539. such

  540. confidence

  541. how

  542. can

  543. he

  544. wait

  545. in

  546. hope

  547. well

  548. the

  549. latter

  550. part

  551. of

  552. verse

  553. 5

  554. tells

  555. us

  556. in

  557. his

  558. word

  559. I

  560. put

  561. my

  562. hope

  563. in

  564. other

  565. words

  566. he's

  567. looking

  568. at

  569. scripture

  570. he

  571. would

  572. have

  573. had

  574. the

  575. law

  576. available

  577. for

  578. him

  579. and

  580. he

  581. would

  582. have

  583. read

  584. the

  585. law

  586. and

  587. I

  588. would

  589. suggest

  590. to

  591. you

  592. that

  593. he's

  594. looking

  595. at

  596. some

  597. verses

  598. that

  599. are

  600. found

  601. in

  602. Deuteronomy

  603. 30

  604. they're

  605. not just

  606. found

  607. there

  608. but

  609. they're

  610. found

  611. elsewhere

  612. in

  613. the

  614. law

  615. they're

  616. those

  617. verses

  618. that

  619. speak

  620. to

  621. us

  622. of

  623. the

  624. fact

  625. that

  626. God

  627. is

  628. ready

  629. to

  630. forgive

  631. his

  632. people

  633. when

  634. they

  635. fail

  636. remember

  637. God

  638. said

  639. that

  640. if

  641. you

  642. come

  643. into

  644. the

  645. land

  646. and

  647. you

  648. walk

  649. with

  650. me

  651. then

  652. I

  653. will

  654. bless

  655. you

  656. with

  657. an

  658. abundance

  659. I

  660. will

  661. be

  662. with

  663. you

  664. I

  665. will

  666. watch

  667. over

  668. you

  669. but

  670. if

  671. you

  672. fail

  673. then

  674. curses

  675. will

  676. come

  677. upon

  678. you

  679. now

  680. what's

  681. your

  682. hope

  683. then

  684. well

  685. there

  686. is

  687. no

  688. hope

  689. except

  690. the

  691. Lord

  692. continues

  693. to

  694. be

  695. gracious

  696. he

  697. goes

  698. on

  699. to

  700. say

  701. when

  702. you

  703. are

  704. driven

  705. away

  706. into

  707. a

  708. far

  709. country

  710. when

  711. things

  712. get

  713. difficult

  714. when

  715. you

  716. have

  717. turned

  718. away

  719. from

  720. me

  721. if

  722. you

  723. turn

  724. back

  725. to

  726. me

  727. with

  728. all

  729. your

  730. heart

  731. and

  732. if

  733. you

  734. seek

  735. to

  736. follow

  737. my

  738. ways

  739. and

  740. walk

  741. as

  742. I

  743. would

  744. have

  745. you

  746. walk

  747. then

  748. I

  749. will

  750. bless

  751. you

  752. again

  753. so

  754. what's

  755. the

  756. psalmist

  757. doing

  758. he's

  759. waiting

  760. in

  761. hope

  762. because

  763. of

  764. God's

  765. word

  766. gives

  767. him

  768. hope

  769. and

  770. God's

  771. word

  772. gives

  773. each

  774. of us

  775. hope

  776. as

  777. well

  778. we

  779. have

  780. much

  781. more

  782. than

  783. the

  784. psalmist

  785. remember

  786. those

  787. words

  788. in

  789. 1

  790. John

  791. if

  792. we

  793. sin

  794. if

  795. we

  796. fail

  797. well

  798. if

  799. we

  800. confess

  801. our

  802. sins

  803. he

  804. is

  805. faithful

  806. and

  807. just

  808. to

  809. forgive

  810. us

  811. our

  812. sins

  813. and

  814. to

  815. cleanse

  816. us

  817. from

  818. all

  819. unrighteousness

  820. if

  821. the

  822. devil

  823. whispers

  824. into

  825. your

  826. ear

  827. you're

  828. a

  829. Christian

  830. you

  831. failed

  832. and

  833. you

  834. failed

  835. miserably

  836. don't

  837. wash

  838. over

  839. your

  840. sin

  841. but

  842. come

  843. to

  844. him

  845. realizing

  846. the

  847. seriousness

  848. of

  849. your

  850. sin

  851. but

  852. know

  853. also

  854. that

  855. there

  856. is

  857. forgiveness

  858. with

  859. him

  860. his

  861. word

  862. tells

  863. us

  864. and

  865. the

  866. blood

  867. of

  868. Christ

  869. will

  870. never

  871. lose

  872. its

  873. power

  874. till

  875. all

  876. the

  877. ransomed

  878. church

  879. of

  880. God

  881. be

  882. saved

  883. to

  884. sin

  885. no

  886. more

  887. in

  888. his

  889. word

  890. we

  891. may

  892. put

  893. our

  894. hope

  895. because

  896. his

  897. word

  898. is

  899. true

  900. so

  901. he's

  902. waiting

  903. he's

  904. waiting

  905. in

  906. hope

  907. and

  908. he's

  909. waiting

  910. in

  911. anticipation

  912. verse

  913. six

  914. he

  915. uses

  916. the

  917. illustration

  918. of

  919. a

  920. watchman

  921. can

  922. you

  923. imagine

  924. an

  925. old

  926. watchman

  927. in

  928. the

  929. psalmist

  930. day

  931. he's

  932. tired

  933. he's

  934. weary

  935. yet

  936. he has

  937. to keep

  938. alert

  939. he has

  940. to keep

  941. a lookout

  942. for the

  943. enemy

  944. may

  945. come

  946. at

  947. any

  948. time

  949. what's

  950. he

  951. looking

  952. forward

  953. to

  954. well

  955. he's

  956. looking

  957. forward

  958. to

  959. his

  960. breakfast

  961. he's

  962. looking

  963. forward

  964. to

  965. the

  966. warmth

  967. of

  968. his

  969. barracks

  970. he's

  971. looking

  972. forward

  973. to

  974. a bit

  975. of

  976. shut

  977. eye

  978. he

  979. wants

  980. his

  981. rest

  982. so

  983. you

  984. can

  985. see

  986. him

  987. waiting

  988. with

  989. anticipation

  990. for the

  991. morning

  992. for the

  993. dawn

  994. of a

  995. new

  996. day

  997. perhaps

  998. you know

  999. what it's

  1000. like to

  1001. be like

  1002. that

  1003. washman

  1004. some of

  1005. you I

  1006. know will

  1007. have sat

  1008. by the

  1009. side

  1010. of a

  1011. bed

  1012. of someone

  1013. you love

  1014. who is

  1015. near death

  1016. and the

  1017. night

  1018. goes by

  1019. and you

  1020. hear the

  1021. breathing

  1022. and it

  1023. seems to

  1024. be getting

  1025. weaker

  1026. what you're

  1027. doing

  1028. you're

  1029. longing

  1030. for the

  1031. morning

  1032. time

  1033. can't

  1034. go by

  1035. quick

  1036. enough

  1037. it's a

  1038. difficult

  1039. time

  1040. well the

  1041. psalmist

  1042. would

  1043. understand

  1044. the feelings

  1045. of somebody

  1046. who's been

  1047. at that

  1048. particular

  1049. position

  1050. but then

  1051. the psalmist

  1052. takes us

  1053. up to a

  1054. new level

  1055. my soul

  1056. longs

  1057. waits for

  1058. the lord

  1059. more

  1060. than

  1061. watchman

  1062. for the

  1063. morning

  1064. and then

  1065. in case you

  1066. haven't heard

  1067. him correctly

  1068. he says

  1069. I know

  1070. what I'm

  1071. saying

  1072. I know

  1073. the watchman

  1074. waits for

  1075. the morning

  1076. and longs

  1077. for the

  1078. morning

  1079. and anticipates

  1080. the morning

  1081. I am

  1082. longing

  1083. even more

  1084. than that

  1085. my soul

  1086. waits for

  1087. the lord

  1088. more than

  1089. watchmen

  1090. wait for

  1091. the morning

  1092. repeating

  1093. himself

  1094. emphasizing

  1095. that he's

  1096. waiting for

  1097. the lord

  1098. to intervene

  1099. on his

  1100. behalf

  1101. we think

  1102. of those

  1103. old testament

  1104. saints

  1105. how they

  1106. were waiting

  1107. and longing

  1108. for the

  1109. messiah

  1110. to come

  1111. I think

  1112. of old

  1113. simeon

  1114. as he

  1115. was waiting

  1116. for the

  1117. messiah

  1118. he saw

  1119. israel

  1120. in their

  1121. condition

  1122. in their

  1123. helplessness

  1124. and in

  1125. their

  1126. hopelessness

  1127. but he

  1128. was waiting

  1129. in hope

  1130. he was

  1131. waiting

  1132. with

  1133. anticipation

  1134. he was

  1135. longing

  1136. because the

  1137. lord

  1138. had told

  1139. him

  1140. that he

  1141. would not

  1142. see death

  1143. before he

  1144. had seen

  1145. the lord's

  1146. christ

  1147. but then

  1148. the morning

  1149. came

  1150. now let

  1151. your servant

  1152. depart in

  1153. peace

  1154. for mine

  1155. eyes have

  1156. seen

  1157. your

  1158. salvation

  1159. way back

  1160. in the

  1161. old testament

  1162. isaiah

  1163. was also

  1164. waiting for

  1165. the lord

  1166. and this

  1167. is what

  1168. he says

  1169. in isaiah

  1170. 40

  1171. and verse

  1172. 31

  1173. those who

  1174. hope

  1175. or those

  1176. who wait

  1177. in the

  1178. lord

  1179. will renew

  1180. their strength

  1181. they will

  1182. soar on

  1183. wings like

  1184. eagles

  1185. they will

  1186. run

  1187. and not

  1188. be weary

  1189. they will

  1190. walk

  1191. and not

  1192. be faint

  1193. a friend

  1194. of mine

  1195. was

  1196. preaching

  1197. on this

  1198. particular

  1199. verse

  1200. and he

  1201. was thinking

  1202. of the

  1203. depths

  1204. of which

  1205. we can

  1206. sink

  1207. and when

  1208. we are

  1209. in the

  1210. depths

  1211. we cry

  1212. out to

  1213. god

  1214. and we

  1215. meditate

  1216. upon his

  1217. grace

  1218. and we

  1219. wait upon

  1220. him

  1221. and as

  1222. we wait

  1223. upon him

  1224. and trust

  1225. in him

  1226. and the

  1227. wonder of

  1228. his

  1229. forgiveness

  1230. we mount

  1231. up with

  1232. wings as

  1233. eagles

  1234. and what's

  1235. a mountain

  1236. to an

  1237. eagle

  1238. it's

  1239. nothing

  1240. is it

  1241. and the

  1242. lord lifts

  1243. us up

  1244. in his

  1245. grace

  1246. and in

  1247. his

  1248. goodness

  1249. so there's

  1250. the desiring

  1251. of the

  1252. psalmist

  1253. there's

  1254. the reflecting

  1255. of the

  1256. psalmist

  1257. there's

  1258. the waiting

  1259. of the

  1260. psalmist

  1261. and finally

  1262. there's

  1263. the exhorting

  1264. of the

  1265. psalmist

  1266. in verses

  1267. 7

  1268. and 8

  1269. oh

  1270. Israel

  1271. put your

  1272. hope

  1273. in the

  1274. lord

  1275. for with

  1276. the lord

  1277. is unfailing

  1278. love

  1279. and with

  1280. him

  1281. is full

  1282. redemption

  1283. he himself

  1284. will redeem

  1285. Israel

  1286. from all

  1287. their sins

  1288. first

  1289. first of all

  1290. in this

  1291. exhortation

  1292. it's a

  1293. call to

  1294. Israel

  1295. and you

  1296. notice how

  1297. the emphasis

  1298. changes here

  1299. he's been

  1300. saying through

  1301. the psalm

  1302. I cry

  1303. my voice

  1304. I wait

  1305. my soul

  1306. he's

  1307. concentrating

  1308. on himself

  1309. and his

  1310. personal needs

  1311. and desires

  1312. and it's

  1313. understandable

  1314. because he

  1315. has been

  1316. in the

  1317. depths

  1318. as he's

  1319. poured out

  1320. his soul

  1321. he's conscious

  1322. of the

  1323. lord's help

  1324. and now

  1325. he wants

  1326. others to

  1327. know that

  1328. the lord

  1329. is good

  1330. that he

  1331. has put

  1332. his hope

  1333. in the

  1334. lord

  1335. and he's

  1336. not

  1337. disappointed

  1338. and he

  1339. calls upon

  1340. them to

  1341. do the

  1342. same

  1343. oh

  1344. Israel

  1345. he says

  1346. put

  1347. your

  1348. hope

  1349. in

  1350. the

  1351. lord

  1352. and as

  1353. I bring

  1354. this message

  1355. to a

  1356. close

  1357. I say

  1358. to the

  1359. folks

  1360. of

  1361. Cargillide

  1362. put

  1363. your

  1364. hope

  1365. in

  1366. the

  1367. lord

  1368. and I

  1369. can do

  1370. that

  1371. as

  1372. for the

  1373. same

  1374. reason

  1375. that the

  1376. psalmist

  1377. did it

  1378. you notice

  1379. that his

  1380. exhortation

  1381. is based

  1382. on the

  1383. very

  1384. character

  1385. of god

  1386. why

  1387. can they

  1388. put their

  1389. trust

  1390. in the

  1391. lord

  1392. why can

  1393. they put

  1394. their

  1395. hope

  1396. in the

  1397. lord

  1398. well

  1399. because

  1400. of his

  1401. unfailing

  1402. love

  1403. they knew

  1404. their

  1405. history

  1406. did

  1407. Israel

  1408. they knew

  1409. the story

  1410. of Abraham

  1411. being brought

  1412. out of

  1413. Ur of the

  1414. Chaldees

  1415. they know

  1416. how god

  1417. had watched

  1418. over

  1419. Abraham

  1420. they know

  1421. how god

  1422. had watched

  1423. over them

  1424. as they

  1425. found

  1426. themselves

  1427. in

  1428. Egypt

  1429. how he

  1430. had watched

  1431. over them

  1432. and sent

  1433. Joseph ahead

  1434. that they

  1435. might have

  1436. something

  1437. to eat

  1438. god

  1439. had been

  1440. with them

  1441. god

  1442. had loved

  1443. them

  1444. and even

  1445. though they

  1446. had failed

  1447. him again

  1448. and again

  1449. he had

  1450. not failed

  1451. them

  1452. read through

  1453. the book

  1454. of judges

  1455. they sinned

  1456. and they

  1457. failed

  1458. but god

  1459. had shown

  1460. his unfailing

  1461. love

  1462. by raising

  1463. up a

  1464. judge

  1465. god

  1466. had been

  1467. faithful

  1468. even when

  1469. they had

  1470. failed to

  1471. be faithful

  1472. themselves

  1473. his love

  1474. had been

  1475. constant

  1476. put your

  1477. hope

  1478. in the

  1479. lord

  1480. for with

  1481. the lord

  1482. is

  1483. unfailing

  1484. love

  1485. but it

  1486. wasn't

  1487. just an

  1488. unfailing

  1489. love

  1490. was it

  1491. it was

  1492. a redeeming

  1493. love

  1494. they had

  1495. the sacrifices

  1496. they knew

  1497. about the

  1498. passover

  1499. where god

  1500. had delivered

  1501. them

  1502. under blood

  1503. from

  1504. captivity

  1505. in

  1506. Egypt

  1507. and all

  1508. of this

  1509. sacrificial

  1510. system

  1511. pointed

  1512. to

  1513. god

  1514. as being

  1515. a

  1516. redeemer

  1517. god

  1518. but to

  1519. the eye

  1520. of faith

  1521. that was

  1522. looking forward

  1523. to the

  1524. coming of

  1525. another

  1526. redeemer

  1527. the lord

  1528. jesus christ

  1529. one who

  1530. was born

  1531. of a

  1532. virgin

  1533. born to

  1534. redeem

  1535. those

  1536. who were

  1537. under

  1538. the law

  1539. so put

  1540. your hope

  1541. in this

  1542. god

  1543. this god

  1544. of unfailing

  1545. love

  1546. this

  1547. redeeming

  1548. this

  1549. redeemer

  1550. god

  1551. and he

  1552. can exhort

  1553. them with

  1554. confidence

  1555. he

  1556. himself

  1557. will

  1558. redeem

  1559. israel

  1560. from all

  1561. their

  1562. sins

  1563. it

  1564. will

  1565. happen

  1566. he's

  1567. looked at

  1568. his own

  1569. sins

  1570. and he

  1571. knows

  1572. that god

  1573. has

  1574. come

  1575. to him

  1576. and god

  1577. has

  1578. redeemed

  1579. him

  1580. that god

  1581. has

  1582. blessed

  1583. him

  1584. and perhaps

  1585. he's looking

  1586. forward as

  1587. well

  1588. to the

  1589. coming of

  1590. one

  1591. who would

  1592. give his

  1593. life a

  1594. ransom

  1595. for many

  1596. the one

  1597. of whom

  1598. the apostle

  1599. paul

  1600. wrote

  1601. in

  1602. ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  1603. chapter 5

  1604. who

  1605. loved

  1606. the church

  1607. and gave

  1608. himself

  1609. for her

  1610. the lord

  1611. will

  1612. redeem

  1613. his

  1614. people

  1615. and you

  1616. and i

  1617. who so

  1618. often sin

  1619. and fail

  1620. against him

  1621. the day

  1622. will come

  1623. and have

  1624. every confidence

  1625. in saying it

  1626. because the word

  1627. says it

  1628. when we

  1629. will be

  1630. presented

  1631. thoughtless

  1632. without

  1633. spot

  1634. without

  1635. blemish

  1636. absolutely

  1637. perfect

  1638. it will

  1639. happen

  1640. he himself

  1641. will redeem

  1642. his

  1643. spiritual

  1644. Israel

  1645. from all

  1646. their

  1647. sins

  1648. so where

  1649. are we

  1650. today

  1651. in that

  1652. spiritual

  1653. barometer

  1654. perhaps

  1655. we're in

  1656. the depths

  1657. will cry

  1658. out to

  1659. god

  1660. desire

  1661. him

  1662. above

  1663. everything

  1664. else

  1665. reflect

  1666. upon

  1667. the

  1668. wonders

  1669. of his

  1670. grace

  1671. wait

  1672. upon

  1673. him

  1674. and there

  1675. is a sense

  1676. in what i

  1677. want to say

  1678. is wait

  1679. no longer

  1680. look

  1681. to christ

  1682. for with

  1683. him

  1684. is full

  1685. redemption

  1686. just over

  1687. ten years

  1688. ago

  1689. i had the

  1690. opportunity

  1691. of going up

  1692. to the

  1693. north of

  1694. norway

  1695. it was in

  1696. the month

  1697. of june

  1698. and some

  1699. of you know

  1700. that that's

  1701. the land

  1702. of the

  1703. midnight

  1704. sun

  1705. and we

  1706. were coming

  1707. back

  1708. we were

  1709. coming from

  1710. the airport

  1711. as we just

  1712. arrived there

  1713. and it was a

  1714. bit of a dull

  1715. evening we

  1716. couldn't see

  1717. the midnight

  1718. sun though it

  1719. was about

  1720. eleven o'clock

  1721. at night

  1722. it was quite

  1723. overcast

  1724. and rosemary

  1725. asked our

  1726. host

  1727. where's the

  1728. best place

  1729. to see the

  1730. midnight sun

  1731. he gave me

  1732. some wise

  1733. gave her some

  1734. wise words

  1735. he said i

  1736. think the

  1737. best place

  1738. to see the

  1739. midnight sun

  1740. he says

  1741. is to

  1742. pull the

  1743. curtains

  1744. you see

  1745. where we

  1746. were staying

  1747. face

  1748. out into

  1749. the sun

  1750. so at

  1751. midnight

  1752. we

  1753. pulled the

  1754. curtains

  1755. and the

  1756. sun shined

  1757. on upon

  1758. us

  1759. at

  1760. midnight

  1761. in the

  1762. depths

  1763. my

  1764. friends

  1765. pull the

  1766. curtains

  1767. of this

  1768. psalm

  1769. and let

  1770. the sunshine

  1771. of god's

  1772. love

  1773. shine upon

  1774. you all

  1775. amen

  1776. let's pray

  1777. father

  1778. sometimes we

  1779. do indeed

  1780. find ourselves

  1781. in the

  1782. depths

  1783. not just

  1784. because of

  1785. sin

  1786. but for a

  1787. number of

  1788. different

  1789. reasons

  1790. oh lord

  1791. we pray

  1792. that you

  1793. will grant

  1794. us all

  1795. the grace

  1796. that we

  1797. need

  1798. to pull

  1799. aside the

  1800. curtains of

  1801. unbelief

  1802. and to

  1803. see you

  1804. in all

  1805. your

  1806. glorious

  1807. grace

  1808. to see

  1809. you in

  1810. the person

  1811. of our

  1812. saviour

  1813. the lord

  1814. jesus

  1815. christ

  1816. and know

  1817. that his

  1818. blood

  1819. has not

  1820. only cleansed

  1821. us from

  1822. past sin

  1823. but also

  1824. of present

  1825. sin and

  1826. future sin

  1827. and help

  1828. us to know

  1829. beyond a

  1830. shadow of

  1831. doubt

  1832. that the

  1833. day will

  1834. come when

  1835. we will be

  1836. presented

  1837. faultless

  1838. thank you

  1839. heavenly father

  1840. for loving

  1841. us

  1842. in christ

  1843. amen

  1844. and
