  1. It's from Mark's Gospel, Chapter 9. I haven't got a page number. Mark's Gospel, Chapter 9.

  2. It's on page 1012. 1012 if you're using a red-covered Bible.

  3. So this first reading is an introduction to something that is picked up in 2 Peter.

  4. So we're going to read Mark's Gospel, Chapter 9, which is on page 1012, and starting at verse 2.

  5. Mark 9, starting at verse 2.

  6. It is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.

  7. He didn't know what to say. They were just so frightened.

  8. Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud.

  9. This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him.

  10. Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

  11. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen,

  12. until the Son of Man had been raised from the dead.

  13. They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what rising from the dead meant.

  14. Now turn with me to 2 Peter, which is on page 1222.

  15. 1, 2, 2, 2.

  16. 2 Peter, Chapter 1.

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  17. It's on page 1222.

  18. 2 Peter, Chapter 1, starting at verse 12.

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  19. So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have.

  20. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body,

  21. because I know that I will soon put it aside as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.

  22. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure, you will always be able to remember these things.

  23. We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  24. but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

  25. For he received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the majestic glory,

  26. saying,

  27. This is my Son, whom I love, with him I am well pleased.

  28. We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

  29. And we have the word of the prophets made more certain,

  30. and you will do well to pay attention to it as to a light shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

  31. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation.

  32. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man,

  33. but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

  34. Well, I'm going to ask Ralph to come up.

  35. I'm going to pray for Ralph.

  36. He can sort himself out then, and then I'm going to give out some pens if anybody wants to take notes.

  37. So, let's pray for Ralph.

  38. Father God, we thank you again for your word.

  39. We thank you for this letter of 2 Peter.

  40. Thank you that your word speaks to us today.

  41. Thank you that we have the privilege and the freedom to have your word in our language.

  42. And we thank you for people like Ralph, for his gifts, for his ability to teach and explain.

  43. And we pray that you would fill him and you would fill us with the power of your spirit,

  44. so that the words we hear change us and transform us.

  45. That the words we hear are not just Ralph's ideas,

  46. but the very words of God speaking into our lives.

  47. Bless him and encourage us,

  48. and may our church be built up as a result of what we do together now.

  49. In Jesus' name.

  50. Amen.

  70. Over the summer, we're going through the book of 2 Peter,

  71. a number of different people speaking.

  72. So I'm continuing this morning from where Simon brought us the last couple of weeks.

  73. He's brought us through to verse 11 in chapter 2.

  74. So we're picking up as we've read from verse 12.

  75. One of the world's leading lights is fading.

  76. This person is known as the father of his nation,

  77. and he's so well-loved in his country that he's often just referred to by the name Mediba,

  78. which simply means father.

  79. And in this part of the world, we know this person more commonly,

  80. not as Mediba, but as Nelson Mandela.

  81. Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first black president in 1994.

  82. I'm sure some of us can remember that time, remember the time that he was released from prison.

  83. It's actually one of my memories when I was younger of him being released and the big occasion that was.

  84. He's led his nation through massive changes,

  85. social upheaval, bringing an end to racial segregation and racial oppression

  86. within the country of South Africa.

  87. But would you believe Nelson Mandela is now 95 years of age?

  88. His remaining time is indeed very short.

  89. And you've maybe seen it recently, the last few weeks,

  90. his worsening health situation has always, it's been in the news almost constantly.

  91. And even though he's been out of politics for quite a while,

  92. it's still a struggle, isn't it, to imagine a South Africa

  93. and even a world without someone like Nelson Mandela, Mediba.

  94. And so many people are asking right now,

  95. how will the message, his message, continue without him?

  96. Without this leading light, how will the message continue?

  97. And as we come to 2 Peter, it's actually a very similar situation in a lot of ways for the early Christian church.

  98. The church was just beginning at this stage to lose some of its leading lights.

  99. The Apostle Peter was one of those, and he had emerged after Jesus had gone.

  100. Peter had emerged as a leader within the church.

  101. And his role was to pass on and to remind people of the light of the gospel,

  102. the good news about Jesus, to tell others and then to keep reminding them.

  103. And he writes in 2 Peter then, and the people he's writing to then are Christians,

  104. because he wants to remind them.

  105. Verse 1, this is how he describes the people that he's writing to.

  106. To those who through the righteousness of our God and Saviour, Jesus Christ,

  107. have received a faith as precious as our own.

  108. They have the same faith as he does.

  109. And his main concern in writing is that they would continue to follow Jesus,

  110. as they already have done.

  111. He knows that his time is short, that his light is fading.

  112. So his opportunity to lead by example, to lead by what he says, to lead by his writings,

  113. that opportunity is passing.

  114. And he's just so concerned that they stay with Jesus.

  115. For us sometimes thinking about our death or life after death is a theoretical concern.

  116. It just seems so far away.

  117. But it wasn't for Peter.

  118. He's facing that prospect right now.

  119. He's going to fold up and put away the tent of his body.

  120. And Jesus has made it very clear to him.

  121. Peter is being called home.

  122. And when the master calls, the servant must answer.

  123. When the master calls, the servant must answer.

  124. Look at verses 13 and 14 from chapter 1.

  125. I think it's right to refresh your memory.

  126. As long as I live in the tent of this body,

  127. because I know that I will soon put it aside

  128. as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.

  129. Death can bring a real focus.

  130. And for Peter, his impending death is just really honing

  131. what exactly it is that he has to say to these Christians.

  132. What are his final words?

  133. What words does he bring them now with this letter,

  134. with this last opportunity?

  135. Well, just go back one verse.

  136. And this is what he says.

  137. So I will always remind you of these things,

  138. even though you know them

  139. and are firmly established in the truth you now have.

  140. He's writing.

  141. He's taking this last opportunity

  142. to remind them of what they already know

  143. and they already believe.

  144. He's not taking the opportunity

  145. to come up with some new words

  146. or some new message

  147. or to build them and push them in a new direction.

  148. As his light is fading,

  149. Peter just simply wants to remind them

  150. of the things he's already taught them.

  151. The phrase in verse 12,

  152. these things,

  153. it's actually come up before.

  154. If we look back,

  155. it's the qualities, isn't it,

  156. that Simon spoke to us of from verse 5.

  157. The things that should come with faith

  158. that should be added,

  159. goodness, knowledge, self-control,

  160. perseverance, godliness,

  161. all that great list.

  162. And Peter, he says in verse 10,

  163. for if you do these things,

  164. the end of verse 10,

  165. if you do these things,

  166. the things he's listed,

  167. you will never fall

  168. and you will receive a rich welcome

  169. into the eternal kingdom

  170. of our Lord and Saviour,

  171. Jesus Christ.

  172. it's growing in the practice of these things,

  173. the practice of their faith,

  174. that they will know that they're reaching their goal,

  175. eternal life and a rich welcome,

  176. which is so real for Peter now

  177. because he's reaching the end of his race,

  178. the end of his story.

  179. Keep doing these things

  180. and you will reach your goal.

  181. He wants them to just continue on the same path,

  182. the one that's lit by the good news of Jesus Christ.

  183. We're all called to a living faith,

  184. a living trust in Jesus,

  185. which, as it says here,

  186. is going to light the way to heaven for us

  187. if we continue in these things.

  188. It's a message they already know.

  189. It's a message they're already following.

  190. But Peter isn't making any apologies

  191. for covering old ground.

  192. He isn't tempted to try and spruce things up

  193. with a new message

  194. or to add something in

  195. or to reveal a little nugget

  196. to just get them over the finishing line.

  197. No, he's going back to the same message.

  198. Do you know, we get bored easily.

  199. And you're probably very conscious of that

  200. during a 30-minute sermon.

  201. Our brains, they crave novelty.

  202. They crave new things.

  203. They want an insight,

  204. a new word in order for our brains to cling on to.

  205. And it's always much easier to get excited,

  206. isn't it, about new things

  207. than what is happening in the new

  208. rather than trying to hold on to the old ground.

  209. And it's something that's always happening.

  210. I think with each generation,

  211. each group of people,

  212. as we come along,

  213. you need to make your stamp, don't you?

  214. Young people are always,

  215. that's the encouragement, isn't it?

  216. It's your generation.

  217. It's your country.

  218. It's your government.

  219. You need to make a stamp.

  220. And politicians take this

  221. and they routinely declare that

  222. this issue or that issue

  223. is the civil rights issue of our generation.

  224. And why do they do that?

  225. Because they know that people are bored.

  226. They know that it's hard to hold the old ground.

  227. So they want to get people on board their cause.

  228. Of course, they have their own motive in doing that.

  229. But they want to get us excited about something new,

  230. something we can push,

  231. something we can develop.

  232. So the person with the new message,

  233. the person with the new approach

  234. is often the one that gets our attention, isn't it?

  235. It's not the same old message

  236. that can get us excited, isn't it?

  237. So as we're listening this morning,

  238. we're probably just even a bit bored

  239. that we're still at verse 12

  240. and we have to get to verse 21.

  241. So let's move on.

  242. Sadly, Peter doesn't let us, does he?

  243. As we read 13 and 14 and he's not budging,

  244. I think it is right to refresh your memory

  245. as long as I live in the tent of this body

  246. because I know that I will soon put it aside

  247. as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.

  248. He's not one for budging, Peter, is he?

  249. What a boring writer he is.

  250. But let's give him a fair hearing first.

  251. Peter says that this constant reminding

  252. that he's doing,

  253. just look, I've talked to you about

  254. what it means to stay on the path

  255. and I'm going to take a few verses

  256. just to remind you again

  257. of why I'm sticking to that.

  258. I'm going to keep refreshing your memory

  259. as long as I have the tent of this body.

  260. I want to keep your mind on these qualities.

  261. Remember this,

  262. you have a rich welcome

  263. awaiting for you in the kingdom of God.

  264. Keep growing in that direction.

  265. keep adding to your faith

  266. and growing in that direction.

  267. I don't have long left.

  268. But the times I do have,

  269. the precious time,

  270. the days,

  271. the months,

  272. the hours,

  273. I'm going to keep reminding you

  274. of the light that you need

  275. to follow on the path.

  276. You see,

  277. Peter wants them to arrive

  278. safely at their destination.

  279. Okay,

  280. we've had three verses now

  281. of reminding,

  282. refreshing,

  283. reflection.

  284. We get it,

  285. Peter.

  286. Can we move on now?

  287. Well,

  288. he's not finished yet,

  289. is he?

  290. We need,

  291. we do need one more verse.

  292. He's reminded them.

  293. He's promised to always remind them

  294. as long as he lives.

  295. Now he's going to go that one step further.

  296. He's going to make sure

  297. that they can remember these things

  298. even after he's dead.

  299. Verse 15.

  300. And,

  301. I will make every effort to see

  302. that after my departure,

  303. what a wonderful way

  304. to speak about death

  305. for the Christian.

  306. And,

  307. I will make every effort

  308. to see that after my departure,

  309. you will always be able

  310. to remember these things.

  311. That's a bold claim.

  312. How will the light of the gospel,

  313. how will this message

  314. that Peter is champion,

  315. survive his death?

  316. Memories are short.

  317. The new is always there.

  318. What will keep us

  319. on the right message?

  320. And,

  321. what's going to light the way

  322. for us as we want to stay

  323. on this path?

  324. Because we want to get

  325. to our goal of eternal life.

  326. Now Peter's concerned

  327. that to remember the message,

  328. it does feel a little bit

  329. over the top to us,

  330. this constant reminder.

  331. But make no mistake,

  332. Peter and the message

  333. that he had,

  334. how to put it,

  335. were in a competitive environment.

  336. And he knew it.

  337. There were many other voices

  338. making all kinds of claims

  339. and promises.

  340. And not just from outside the church,

  341. but within the church.

  342. So,

  343. believers were there

  344. in their churches

  345. and they were saying,

  346. why listen to this

  347. old message,

  348. the message that Peter

  349. has come with,

  350. the one about Jesus

  351. and the old stories

  352. about Jesus,

  353. when there's other messages

  354. on offer.

  355. They were starting

  356. to look for a new light,

  357. one for their generation

  358. and for their concerns

  359. and for their issues,

  360. one that they could own.

  361. And there were any number

  362. of other Christian teachers

  363. and Christian teachings

  364. for them to listen to.

  365. Even in the early days

  366. of the church,

  367. we think the kind of splits

  368. and the diversity

  369. and the different thoughts

  370. are something new,

  371. but they were all there

  372. back then.

  373. You know,

  374. we're going to hear

  375. lots and lots

  376. about these competing voices

  377. from next Sunday.

  378. If you look,

  379. chapter two

  380. is all about those voices.

  381. There's a whole chapter.

  382. People,

  383. they were known

  384. as Christians,

  385. but the reality

  386. is that they exploited

  387. believers

  388. with made-up stories

  389. and half-baked truths.

  390. Voices that,

  391. as I said,

  392. still exist in the church

  393. today.

  394. That's a bit hard to say.

  395. Maybe I'm being,

  396. you could say,

  397. I'm being alarmist.

  398. Maybe I'm not being

  399. generous or kind enough

  400. or being too judgmental.

  401. to say that there are people

  402. within the church

  403. that are making things up

  404. or that there are people

  405. that are misunderstanding things

  406. and bringing us half-stories.

  407. And there is a danger

  408. of wrongly passing judgment

  409. or to wrongly pass comment

  410. on someone else's experience.

  411. But to not examine

  412. when someone tells us

  413. this is what the Lord says,

  414. to not examine that

  415. is to ignore the words

  416. of the Bible.

  417. And because this is where

  418. Peter is heading,

  419. I think it's good

  420. to look a little bit

  421. into chapter 2.

  422. Not too much.

  423. I don't want to preach

  424. next week's sermon.

  425. But if you look at

  426. verse 2 in chapter 2,

  427. this is what it says

  428. about those people.

  429. Many will follow

  430. their shameful ways

  431. and will bring the way

  432. of truth into disrepute.

  433. In their greed,

  434. these teachers

  435. will exploit you

  436. with stories

  437. they have made up.

  438. good-sounding stories.

  439. Stories all about God,

  440. but not true ones

  441. that come from Him.

  442. They come with

  443. heavenly stories.

  444. They talk about angels.

  445. They talk about demons.

  446. But they really don't know

  447. what they're talking about.

  448. They're actually

  449. slandering celestial beings.

  450. The latter half of verse 10.

  451. Bold and arrogant,

  452. these men are not afraid

  453. to slander celestial beings.

  454. Start at verse 12.

  455. But these men

  456. blaspheme in matters

  457. they do not understand.

  458. You see,

  459. they're essentially ignorant.

  460. But even though they're ignorant,

  461. they don't really know

  462. what they're talking about.

  463. They feel bold enough

  464. to confidently come

  465. and tell us about

  466. what's happening

  467. in the heavenly realms.

  468. They're looking up to heaven

  469. and they're talking about angels

  470. and demons.

  471. But they're just guessing.

  472. They're guessing

  473. about what God's will.

  474. The hidden ways of God.

  475. Things that aren't known to us.

  476. And in doing so,

  477. in trying to bring

  478. these things to us,

  479. they're destroying

  480. the walk of many.

  481. That's the competitive environment

  482. that Peter is in.

  483. That is what he's trying

  484. to protect

  485. the flock from.

  486. So as we read

  487. through chapter 2,

  488. we read that these people,

  489. they offer all kinds of things.

  490. They offer revelry,

  491. feasts, wealth, boasting,

  492. and they come with enticing words.

  493. And they promise freedom.

  494. And who doesn't want freedom?

  495. And much of what they say

  496. sounds good.

  497. And it's much more interesting,

  498. isn't it?

  499. And you could have

  500. a much more entertaining sermon

  501. with all that kind of stuff

  502. than just having to go back

  503. and list the qualities

  504. in chapter 1

  505. from verse 5

  506. to verses 11.

  507. Tempting is it not?

  508. Tempting is it not

  509. for us,

  510. for me to listen

  511. to other stories,

  512. to listen to other voices,

  513. to lend our ears

  514. to other kinds of teaching.

  515. Words that sound good,

  516. but really in the end

  517. they're just empty boastings.

  518. They're not true.

  519. Now I recognize

  520. there is much,

  521. much, much difficulty here

  522. for the believer,

  523. for the Christian,

  524. for me,

  525. for you.

  526. How do we react

  527. and deal with people

  528. that make those

  529. impossible to verify

  530. claims about God's will

  531. and hearing his voice?

  532. It is difficult.

  533. And if I'm honest,

  534. my reaction,

  535. the cowardly reaction

  536. sometimes is just

  537. to try and stay clear

  538. of commenting

  539. where possible.

  540. So when these things

  541. come up,

  542. you just talk around it

  543. or away from it.

  544. You just try and avoid.

  545. But let me encourage you.

  546. You should hold,

  547. we must hold

  548. to the message

  549. we've heard,

  550. the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  551. And we must continue

  552. to remind one another,

  553. as Peter is doing here,

  554. remind each other

  555. of that gospel.

  556. So I would ask,

  557. what new message

  558. do we need

  559. than the one

  560. already given

  561. through Jesus?

  562. What new message

  563. do we need

  564. besides the one

  565. that we've already

  566. received through Jesus?

  567. And so in those situations,

  568. I think we can show

  569. in our words

  570. and in our actions

  571. what we say,

  572. a commitment

  573. to the old

  574. and reliable

  575. good news about Jesus.

  576. It is difficult,

  577. you know,

  578. and even with our own

  579. experiences

  580. and the experience

  581. of others,

  582. to walk that path,

  583. to work it out.

  584. And sometimes

  585. we do avoid,

  586. but hold to the truth

  587. yourself,

  588. remind one another,

  589. and help people

  590. to see the worth

  591. of the gospel

  592. of Jesus Christ.

  593. Now Peter has

  594. a greater challenge

  595. than any of us

  596. will ever have

  597. in that area.

  598. Peter must show

  599. that his message,

  600. the one that he keeps

  601. reminding them of,

  602. is the true light

  603. of the good news

  604. about Jesus.

  605. You see,

  606. Peter is an apostle,

  607. he's someone who knew Jesus

  608. and he was chosen

  609. by Jesus to lead the church.

  610. And he had that special role

  611. of establishing the message

  612. and continuing it

  613. in the early church

  614. and ensuring

  615. that that scripture

  616. came about.

  617. So Peter

  618. isn't coming

  619. with a second-hand story

  620. that he's made up.

  621. No.

  622. What Peter says

  623. comes from God.

  624. Verse 16.

  625. We did not follow

  626. cleverly invented stories

  627. when we told you

  628. about the power

  629. and coming

  630. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  631. but we were eyewitnesses

  632. of his majesty.

  633. For he received honour

  634. and glory

  635. from God the Father

  636. when the voice

  637. came to him

  638. from the majestic glory

  639. saying,

  640. This is my son

  641. whom I love.

  642. With him I am well pleased.

  643. We ourselves

  644. heard this voice

  645. that came from heaven

  646. and we were with him

  647. on the sacred mountain.

  648. I was there,

  649. says Peter.

  650. I was there

  651. on the sacred mountain.

  652. And I can picture

  653. his face lighting up

  654. as he recounts

  655. this story.

  656. The day that Jesus

  657. took three of them

  658. on a trek

  659. and marched them

  660. up the mountain.

  661. Peter, James and John.

  662. And as they walk

  663. up the mountain

  664. I feel that they

  665. should know

  666. that something sacred

  667. is going to happen.

  668. They should know

  669. that something heavenly

  670. is going to take place

  671. because if you ever

  672. read your Bible

  673. you know that lots

  674. of really cool

  675. and exciting things

  676. happen on mountaintops

  677. and mountain places.

  678. And then it happens.

  679. Before their eyes

  680. Jesus is glorified.

  681. This normal looking guy

  682. this average looking guy

  683. he starts to glow

  684. with the brightness

  685. of the sun.

  686. Imagine.

  687. Imagine that.

  688. Imagine taking

  689. a very light piece

  690. of cotton

  691. and the sun

  692. we don't have it today

  693. but the one we've enjoyed

  694. for the last few weeks.

  695. Taking the cotton

  696. and just putting it up

  697. over the sun

  698. and trying to look

  699. at the sun

  700. through that light

  701. piece of cotton

  702. that is what it was like.

  703. The sun of God

  704. was shining

  705. the brilliance of Jesus

  706. trying to look through

  707. that cotton

  708. at the sun

  709. that's what it was like

  710. and Peter sees all of this

  711. right before his eyes

  712. and then he hears

  713. the voice from heaven

  714. and he says

  715. that voice is

  716. the majestic glory

  717. and it's God

  718. the Father speaking

  719. and the voice says

  720. this is my son

  721. whom I love

  722. with him

  723. I am well pleased.

  724. It's as if

  725. the whole of heaven

  726. has opened up

  727. and it touches

  728. the mountain

  729. that day

  730. and it makes

  731. the mountain sacred

  732. Peter says

  733. it's the meeting place

  734. of heaven

  735. and earth

  736. right at that point

  737. and for that instance

  738. what an experience

  739. what a story

  740. imagine being there

  741. of seeing

  742. with our own eyes

  743. the glorified Jesus

  744. of hearing

  745. the audible voice

  746. of God

  747. coming down

  748. from the sky

  749. oh the sights

  750. and the sounds

  751. and the brilliance

  752. of the feeling

  753. of the glory

  754. of God

  755. on our very skin

  756. and this is

  757. the true story

  758. that Peter comes

  759. to share with us

  760. the light

  761. of Jesus

  762. the reliable

  763. first hand truth

  764. about Jesus

  765. that he's God's

  766. blessed son

  767. equal

  768. equal with the divine

  769. father

  770. that's why that voice

  771. came

  772. so Peter can say

  773. among all the other

  774. competing voices

  775. that are out there

  776. all the things

  777. that would look

  778. for attention

  779. listen to me

  780. for I have seen

  781. the light

  782. of Jesus

  783. but still the other

  784. voices

  785. and still they continue

  786. yes Peter's

  787. was amazing

  788. his voice

  789. and his story

  790. and his experience

  791. but others

  792. say they have

  793. similarly amazing

  794. encounters

  795. people today claim

  796. people still say

  797. and people do

  798. have visions of Jesus

  799. and continue to hear

  800. voices from heaven

  801. but how do we know

  802. if these stories

  803. are true

  804. or how do we make

  805. sense of our own

  806. experience of God

  807. if that's true for us

  808. maybe we believe

  809. that we've heard

  810. the voice of God

  811. or we've had a vision

  812. of Jesus

  813. and so the

  814. 2000 year old

  815. problem that was

  816. there for Peter

  817. how to distinguish

  818. his message

  819. and the truth

  820. of it

  821. is a problem

  822. that still remains

  823. for us

  824. which light

  825. will we follow

  826. which voice

  827. will we listen

  828. to

  829. and I think

  830. we have two

  831. basic views

  832. that come out

  833. or two different

  834. reactions

  835. we can react

  836. by either dismissing

  837. completely

  838. personal experience

  839. and that whole area

  840. or we can react

  841. by trying to chase

  842. after our own

  843. words from God

  844. and wanting it

  845. but Peter

  846. offers his readers

  847. including us today

  848. a better alternative

  849. a better alternative

  850. to feel like

  851. that we're missing

  852. out somehow

  853. on God's

  854. experiences

  855. or that we

  856. have to somehow

  857. chase after them

  858. and get them

  859. and Peter

  860. is going to tell

  861. them

  862. how they can

  863. take his

  864. real experience

  865. and have a more

  866. sure version

  867. of it

  868. you see

  869. his experience

  870. on the mountain

  871. wasn't meant

  872. to be just

  873. a personal encounter

  874. Jesus had told them

  875. after

  876. told Peter

  877. and James

  878. and John

  879. to tell others

  880. after the resurrection

  881. all about it

  882. it wasn't to be

  883. a personal experience

  884. the light of Jesus

  885. on the mountain

  886. when Jesus was there

  887. was meant to point

  888. to a more

  889. sure light

  890. verse 19

  891. and we have

  892. the word of the prophets

  893. made

  894. more certain

  895. and you will do

  896. well to pay

  897. attention to it

  898. as

  899. to a light

  900. shining

  901. in a dark

  902. place

  903. this Bible

  904. is the more

  905. certain light

  906. Peter's

  907. reminder

  908. after death

  909. remember he was

  910. looking

  911. in verse 15

  912. to somehow

  913. remind them

  914. after his death

  915. of these things

  916. is this sure

  917. light

  918. and we would do

  919. well to pay

  920. attention to it

  921. he says

  922. see how it's

  923. described

  924. it is the light

  925. shining in the

  926. dark place

  927. and the Bible

  928. the scriptures

  929. the word of the prophets

  930. is a more

  931. sure light

  932. than the light

  933. of divine

  934. experience

  935. the Bible

  936. is a more

  937. sure light

  938. than the light

  939. of divine

  940. experience

  941. I wasn't sure

  942. about writing

  943. that

  944. of thinking

  945. like that

  946. and it's hard

  947. to agree

  948. sometimes

  949. with statements

  950. like that

  951. I mean

  952. how can the

  953. words

  954. the words

  955. on a page

  956. be more

  957. certain

  958. than actual

  959. experiences

  960. does that not

  961. bother you

  962. it bothers me

  963. we place such a

  964. high value

  965. on experience

  966. seeing and

  967. hearing something

  968. first hand

  969. is so much

  970. better in our

  971. estimation

  972. or understanding

  973. and getting

  974. information from

  975. a book

  976. isn't it

  977. isn't always

  978. better to

  979. experience

  980. than to read

  981. so given

  982. the option

  983. of reading

  984. how we

  985. should live

  986. as Christians

  987. from the

  988. Bible

  989. or finding

  990. God's will

  991. from some

  992. amazing

  993. happenings

  994. well we're

  995. going to tend

  996. in that

  997. direction

  998. aren't we

  999. we're going

  1000. to want

  1001. that more

  1002. than this

  1003. but Peter

  1004. and the

  1005. holy scriptures

  1006. would disagree

  1007. what these

  1008. verses say

  1009. is that

  1010. scripture

  1011. is a more

  1012. certain

  1013. guide

  1014. than

  1015. experience

  1016. even

  1017. undeniable

  1018. experiences

  1019. like

  1020. Peter's

  1021. where

  1022. Jesus

  1023. is in

  1024. front of

  1025. us

  1026. and an

  1027. audible

  1028. voice

  1029. is coming

  1030. from heaven

  1031. more

  1032. certain

  1033. than that

  1034. and that

  1035. by the way

  1036. is

  1037. Peter's

  1038. experience

  1039. is far

  1040. far beyond

  1041. what often

  1042. passes

  1043. today

  1044. for God

  1045. speaking

  1046. how can

  1047. we trust

  1048. the Bible

  1049. more than

  1050. our own

  1051. experience

  1052. well I think

  1053. we continue

  1054. to trust

  1055. the Bible

  1056. because we

  1057. will always

  1058. have doubts

  1059. about experiences

  1060. when something

  1061. happens

  1062. we have to

  1063. take it in

  1064. don't we

  1065. through our

  1066. senses

  1067. what we see

  1068. what we feel

  1069. what we touch

  1070. what we hear

1071. and we take it in

  1072. and we have to

  1073. interpret

  1074. and so as we

  1075. experience things

  1076. we have to

  1077. sift those things

  1078. through our minds

  1079. and through our

  1080. hearts

  1081. and we have to

  1082. make sense

  1083. about what they

  1084. mean

  1085. what's happening

  1086. what is God

  1087. saying here

  1088. and then we're

  1089. somewhat vulnerable

  1090. aren't we

  1091. to all kinds

  1092. of thoughts

  1093. and all kinds

  1094. of motives

  1095. do you know

  1096. what's reassuring

  1097. even Peter

  1098. didn't get it

  1099. right

  1100. he didn't

  1101. always get it

  1102. right when it

  1103. came to his

  1104. experiences

  1105. and in fact

  1106. he didn't even

  1107. get it right

  1108. to this experience

  1109. it's an alarming

  1110. thing to say

  1111. about an apostle

  1112. about a writer

  1113. of the New Testament

  1114. to say that he

  1115. didn't get it

  1116. right

  1117. so stay with me

  1118. as I try to

  1119. explain

  1120. don't be alarmed

  1121. just yet

  1122. look back again

  1123. at Mark chapter

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  1124. 9 will you

  1125. Mark chapter

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  1126. 9

  1127. now Mark

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  1128. chapter 9

  1129. is Peter's

  1130. own account

  1131. from the

  1132. gospels

  1133. of what he

  1134. thought was

  1135. happening at

  1136. the time

  1137. of the

  1138. transfiguration

  1139. Mark is the

  1140. author of the

  1141. gospel of Mark

  1142. but it's believed

  1143. that Peter was

  1144. the source

  1145. material

  1146. the person

  1147. that passed

  1148. on the

  1149. stories and

  1150. the information

  1151. that allows

  1152. the gospel

  1153. to be written

  1154. so back

  1155. Mark chapter

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  1156. 9

  1157. and just

  1158. two of the

  1159. verses

  1160. 5 and 6

  1161. Peter said

  1162. to Jesus

  1163. Rabbi

  1164. it's good

  1165. for us

  1166. to be here

  1167. let us

  1168. put up

  1169. three shelters

  1170. one for you

  1171. one for Moses

  1172. and one for

  1173. Elijah

  1174. and then look

  1175. at it a little

  1176. bit in brackets

  1177. he did not

  1178. know what

  1179. to say

  1180. they were so

  1181. frightened

  1182. Peter's

  1183. telling this

  1184. all to Mark

  1185. he's telling

  1186. the story

  1187. as he's writing

  1188. the gospel

  1189. and he's

  1190. being truthful

  1191. he's being

  1192. honest

  1193. he says

  1194. you know

  1195. I saw

  1196. all that

  1197. happened

  1198. and I was

  1199. frightened

  1200. out of my

  1201. wits

  1202. at the time

  1203. I had no

  1204. clue what

  1205. this was about

  1206. I had no

  1207. idea what

  1208. was happening

  1209. look at

  1210. verse 9

  1211. and as they

  1212. were coming

  1213. down the

  1214. mountain

  1215. Jesus had

  1216. to give

  1217. them orders

  1218. not to tell

  1219. anyone what

  1220. they had

  1221. seen until

  1222. the son

  1223. of man

  1224. had risen

  1225. from the

  1226. dead

  1227. they kept

  1228. the matter

  1229. to themselves

  1230. discussing

  1231. what rising

  1232. from the

  1233. dead

  1234. meant

  1235. Jesus

  1236. Jesus had

  1237. to tell

  1238. them to

  1239. keep it

  1240. to themselves

  1241. until after

  1242. the resurrection

  1243. why was that

  1244. because Peter

  1245. didn't understand

  1246. the experience

  1247. even though he

  1248. had seen it

  1249. and heard it

  1250. and felt it

  1251. he didn't

  1252. understand

  1253. and what it

  1254. took

  1255. was Jesus

  1256. to rise

  1257. from the

  1258. dead

  1259. and Peter

  1260. to understand

  1261. that

  1262. but then

  1263. Jesus

  1264. after he

  1265. rose from

  1266. the dead

  1267. he came

  1268. and he

  1269. spent

  1270. I think

  1271. a period

  1272. of 40

  1273. days

  1274. before he

  1275. ascended

  1276. to heaven

  1277. and you

  1278. know what

  1279. it says

  1280. he did

  1281. during that

  1282. time

  1283. he opened

  1284. up the

  1285. scriptures

  1286. he opened

  1287. up the

  1288. old

  1289. testament

  1290. and said

  1291. look here

  1292. this is

  1293. about me

  1294. look here

  1295. you don't

  1296. understand

  1297. the resurrection

  1298. but look

  1299. there's a

  1300. hint of it

  1301. back here

  1302. and I'm

  1303. going to

  1304. explain that

  1305. to you

  1306. all the

  1307. scriptures

  1308. are pointing

  1309. towards me

  1310. and so

  1311. Jesus knew

  1312. that and he

  1313. said to

  1314. Peter and

  1315. James and

  1316. John

  1317. don't tell

  1318. anyone about

  1319. this because

  1320. you don't

  1321. understand

  1322. you're not

  1323. going to

  1324. understand it

  1325. until after

  1326. the resurrection

  1327. until after

  1328. I've risen

  1329. and come

  1330. and explained

  1331. it all to

  1332. you

  1333. it was only

  1334. the light

  1335. of the

  1336. scriptures

  1337. that made

  1338. any sense

  1339. of what

  1340. happened on

  1341. the mountain

  1342. it was only

  1343. the light

  1344. of scriptures

  1345. that made

  1346. any sense

  1347. of Peter's

  1348. experience

  1349. for him

  1350. and so

  1351. the key

  1352. thing to

  1353. understand

  1354. is this

  1355. that scripture

  1356. didn't come

  1357. about by the

  1358. author's own

  1359. attempts at

  1360. interpretation

  1361. no scripture

  1362. has its

  1363. origin in

  1364. the will

  1365. of God

  1366. who carries

  1367. the author's

  1368. along by

  1369. the holy

  1370. spirit

  1371. and we

  1372. need to

  1373. come back

  1374. now to

  1375. 2nd Peter

  1376. and chapter

  1377. 1

  1378. 2nd Peter

  1379. chapter 1

  1380. and verse

  1381. 20

  1382. above all

  1383. you must

  1384. understand

  1385. that no

  1386. prophecy of

  1387. scripture

  1388. came about

  1389. by the

  1390. prophet's

  1391. own

  1392. interpretation

  1393. for

  1394. prophecy

  1395. never had

  1396. its origin

  1397. in the

  1398. will of

  1399. man

  1400. but men

  1401. spoke

  1402. from God

  1403. as they

  1404. were carried

  1405. along

  1406. by the

  1407. holy

  1408. spirit

  1409. it's a

  1410. big area

  1411. isn't it

  1412. how the

  1413. bible

  1414. came to

  1415. us

  1416. what's

  1417. in there

  1418. the stories

  1419. and the

  1420. holy

  1421. spirit

  1422. and how

  1423. does all

  1424. that work

  1425. and I

  1426. can't describe

  1427. all of that

  1428. this morning

  1429. and I don't

  1430. know all of

  1431. it but

  1432. I think what

  1433. we can say

  1434. is that the

  1435. events

  1436. that are in

  1437. scripture are

  1438. accurately recorded

  1439. by the

  1440. authors of

  1441. scripture

  1442. and we can

  1443. see that

  1444. you know

  1445. when people

  1446. talk about

  1447. the bible

  1448. being a

  1449. religious

  1450. document

  1451. and fabricated

  1452. but look

  1453. back at

  1454. the account

  1455. in Mark

  1456. and the

  1457. honesty of

  1458. it

  1459. of what

  1460. Peter's

  1461. saying

  1462. it's not

  1463. airbrushed

  1464. or spun

  1465. or there's

  1466. no extra

  1467. bits added

  1468. in to try

  1469. and explain

  1470. it away

  1471. Peter doesn't

  1472. come across

  1473. particularly

  1474. well

  1475. he's frightened

  1476. he doesn't

  1477. know what's

  1478. happening

  1479. the account

  1480. is honest

  1481. and the

  1482. holy spirit

  1483. works and he

  1484. takes these

  1485. experiences

  1486. the things

  1487. they didn't

  1488. understand

  1489. and he

  1490. ensures that

  1491. the words

  1492. of scripture

  1493. are not

  1494. just the

  1495. author's

  1496. own ideas

  1497. about what

  1498. happened

  1499. but are

  1500. the very

  1501. words of

  1502. God

  1503. the choice

  1504. of the

  1505. stories

  1506. the way

  1507. they fit

  1508. together

  1509. to make

  1510. a story

  1511. the way

  1512. that the

  1513. whole

  1514. scripture

  1515. from

  1516. Genesis

  1517. to

  1518. Revelation

  1519. fits

  1520. together

  1521. is all

  1522. of God's

  1523. work

  1524. yes God

  1525. is involved

  1526. in the

  1527. divine

  1528. experiences

  1529. but he

  1530. is also

  1531. involved

  1532. in the

  1533. capturing

  1534. of those

  1535. experiences

  1536. those events

  1537. onto the

  1538. pages

  1539. of scripture

  1540. to ensure

  1541. that yes

  1542. the Bible

  1543. has many

  1544. authors

  1545. maybe 40

  1546. 40 human

  1547. authors

  1548. but there

  1549. is only

  1550. one divine

  1551. author

  1552. over it

  1553. all

  1554. that is

  1555. why

  1556. Psalm

  1557. 119

  1558. says

  1559. your word

  1560. is a lamp

  1561. unto my

  1562. feet

  1563. and a

  1564. light

  1565. unto my

  1566. path

  1567. you see

  1568. it is the

  1569. true and

  1570. reliable

  1571. light

  1572. it guides

  1573. us as

  1574. to how

  1575. we live

  1576. and how

  1577. we're to

  1578. go each

  1579. step along

  1580. the way

  1581. so we

  1582. can look

  1583. back over

  1584. verses 5

  1585. and 11

  1586. the things

  1587. that Peter

  1588. is wanting

  1589. to remind

  1590. them of

  1591. and we

  1592. can see

  1593. how those

  1594. words

  1595. guide us

  1596. and help

  1597. us along

  1598. the way

  1599. it says

  1600. how we

  1601. are to

  1602. live

  1603. as believers

  1604. what it

  1605. means to

  1606. be a

  1607. person of

  1608. faith

  1609. it means

  1610. that all

  1611. these other

  1612. qualities

  1613. and characteristics

  1614. will emerge

  1615. and grow

  1616. and be added

  1617. to our

  1618. gift of

  1619. faith that

  1620. we have

  1621. from God

  1622. so that

  1623. one day

  1624. we're going

  1625. to get to

  1626. the end

  1627. of that

  1628. path

  1629. and reach

  1630. our

  1631. heavenly

  1632. home

  1633. scripture

  1634. the bible

  1635. is the

  1636. bright light

  1637. to guide

  1638. us on

  1639. that path

  1640. it's

  1641. it's really

  1642. how we

  1643. can today

  1644. think about

  1645. it

  1646. 2000 years

  1647. later

  1648. in Ireland

  1649. see

  1650. Jesus

  1651. see Jesus

  1652. standing on

  1653. that mountaintop

  1654. a Judean

  1655. mountaintop

  1656. 2000 years

  1657. ago

  1658. it is through

  1659. the pages

  1660. of scripture

  1661. so given

  1662. what we

  1663. have

  1664. in scripture

  1665. the reliable

  1666. first hand

  1667. accounts

  1668. of God's

  1669. dealings

  1670. with people

  1671. all of

  1672. which are

  1673. interpreted

  1674. by God

  1675. I guess

  1676. the question

  1677. is why

  1678. would we

  1679. chase after

  1680. other stories

  1681. or our

  1682. own

  1683. interpretation

  1684. or our

  1685. own

  1686. experiences

  1687. of the

  1688. word of

  1689. God

  1690. that often

  1691. prove to be

  1692. unreliable

  1693. why

  1694. leave

  1695. the certain

  1696. light of

  1697. scripture

  1698. for an

  1699. uncertain

  1700. guide

  1701. that's why

  1702. Peter starts

  1703. or says

  1704. in verse 12

  1705. remember

  1706. remember

  1707. Peter says

  1708. remember

  1709. these things

  1710. and then he

  1711. says you

  1712. will do

  1713. well

  1714. you will

  1715. do well

  1716. to pay

  1717. attention

  1718. to the

  1719. scriptures

  1720. maybe you're

  1721. a bit

  1722. disappointed

  1723. this morning

  1724. that we

  1725. can't

  1726. in a sense

  1727. repeat the

  1728. wonderful

  1729. mountaintop

  1730. experience

  1731. of Peter

  1732. I wish

  1733. I wish

  1734. that was

  1735. the new

  1736. message

  1737. in some

  1738. ways that I

  1739. could bring

  1740. to you

  1741. but it's

  1742. not

  1743. Jesus

  1744. Jesus has

  1745. come and

  1746. gone

  1747. the

  1748. transfiguration

  1749. that that

  1750. glorification

  1751. of Jesus

  1752. was just

  1753. a passing

  1754. glimpse

  1755. it was over

  1756. so quickly

  1757. a passing

  1758. taste of

  1759. the risen

  1760. Jesus

  1761. and it

  1762. was Peter's

  1763. experience

  1764. thankfully

  1765. recorded for

  1766. us in the

  1767. scripture

  1768. so today

  1769. today we can

  1770. be guided by

  1771. that sure

  1772. word

  1773. and this

  1774. is why

  1775. Peter tells

  1776. them

  1777. of the

  1778. need to

  1779. always

  1780. remember

  1781. the

  1782. message

  1783. the

  1784. qualities

  1785. these

  1786. things

  1787. that's

  1788. why he

  1789. tells them

  1790. of the

  1791. light of

  1792. his own

  1793. experience

  1794. that's why

  1795. he tells

  1796. them of the

  1797. more certain

  1798. light of

  1799. scripture

  1800. as a

  1801. guide

  1802. maybe I do

  1803. something new

  1804. there's one

  1805. more light

  1806. left

  1807. there is one

  1808. more light

  1809. left

  1810. for us

  1811. and this

  1812. is one

  1813. that we're

  1814. all going

  1815. to see

  1816. just in

  1817. case we

  1818. feel we're

  1819. missing out

  1820. on our

  1821. mountaintop

  1822. experience

  1823. there is

  1824. one light

  1825. there's a

  1826. wonderful

  1827. message

  1828. and it's

  1829. tucked away

  1830. it's tucked

  1831. away in

  1832. verse 19

  1833. we skipped

  1834. over it

  1835. verse 19

  1836. and we

  1837. have the

  1838. word of

  1839. the

  1840. prophets

  1841. made more

  1842. certain

  1843. and you

  1844. will do

  1845. well to

  1846. pay attention

  1847. to it

  1848. as to a

  1849. light shining

  1850. in a dark

  1851. place

  1852. until the

  1853. day dawns

  1854. and the

  1855. morning star

  1856. rises in

  1857. your hearts

  1858. you see

  1859. there's a

  1860. wonderful

  1861. time limit

  1862. on the

  1863. light of

  1864. scripture

  1865. peter says

  1866. yes it

  1867. will be

  1868. our light

  1869. shining

  1870. in a

  1871. dark

  1872. place

  1873. but only

  1874. until

  1875. until

  1876. the day

  1877. dawns

  1878. and the

  1879. morning star

  1880. rises in

  1881. your hearts

  1882. did you

  1883. forget

  1884. that you

  1885. only need

  1886. a light

  1887. as long

  1888. as it's

  1889. dark

  1890. did you

  1891. forget

  1892. that

  1893. the bible

  1894. tells us

  1895. that we're

  1896. walking

  1897. yes it's

  1898. dark days

  1899. we don't

  1900. see Jesus

  1901. we don't

  1902. see his

  1903. rule

  1904. we're living

  1905. in a

  1906. dark

  1907. day

  1908. but one

  1909. day soon

  1910. a new

  1911. day

  1912. is going

  1913. to dawn

  1914. and when

  1915. the dawn

  1916. comes

  1917. the lamp

  1918. and the

  1919. light

  1920. it's no

  1921. longer

  1922. needed

  1923. to guide

  1924. our

  1925. path

  1926. on that

  1927. day

  1928. Christ

  1929. in his

  1930. brilliant

  1931. radiance

  1932. is going

  1933. to come

  1934. again

  1935. and on

  1936. that day

  1937. Jesus

  1938. is the

  1939. morning star

  1940. rising in

  1941. our hearts

  1942. we weren't

  1943. there for his

  1944. first coming

  1945. we weren't

  1946. there for the

  1947. transfiguration

  1948. but we're

  1949. going to have

  1950. front row seats

  1951. for his

  1952. second coming

  1953. on that

  1954. day

  1955. we will

  1956. all have

  1957. our

  1958. mountaintop

  1959. experience

  1960. one that's

  1961. already been

  1962. written about

  1963. in the

  1964. reliable

  1965. words of

  1966. the bible

  1967. you just

  1968. need to

  1969. look at

  1970. you don't

  1971. need to

  1972. turn

  1973. thessalonians

  1974. chapter 4

  1975. verse 15

  1976. onwards and

  1977. this is what

  1978. it says

  1979. this will be

  1980. our experience

  1981. on that

  1982. day the

  1983. lord will

  1984. descend

  1985. from heaven

  1986. with a

  1987. loud command

  1988. and he'll

  1989. have the

  1990. voice of

  1991. the archangel

  1992. and there'll

  1993. be the

  1994. trumpet call

  1995. of god

  1996. and this

  1997. time we

  1998. won't be

  1999. standing

  2000. around in

  2001. confused

  2002. fear

  2003. wondering

  2004. what's

  2005. happening

  2006. no this

  2007. time the

  2008. brightness of

  2009. the glorified

  2010. jesus

  2011. looking at

  2012. that sun

  2013. through the

  2014. cotton

  2015. sheet

  2016. it won't

  2017. switch off

  2018. it won't

  2019. be temporary

  2020. and this

  2021. time there's

  2022. going to be

  2023. more than

  2024. three people

  2025. on a

  2026. mountaintop

  2027. that's going

  2028. to hear

  2029. this voice

  2030. from heaven

  2031. for everyone

  2032. everyone who

  2033. ever died

  2034. trusting in

  2035. the gospel

  2036. trusting in

  2037. jesus is

  2038. going to

  2039. hear that

  2040. call

  2041. and they're

  2042. all discarded

  2043. tents

  2044. the all

  2045. discarded tents

  2046. are going to

  2047. rise

  2048. and we who

  2049. are still alive

  2050. are going to

  2051. hear the voice

  2052. from heaven

  2053. and we're

  2054. going to

  2055. see the

  2056. illuminated

  2057. and glorified

  2058. jesus the

  2059. conquering king

  2060. as he comes

  2061. down then my

  2062. friends we're

  2063. not going to

  2064. have to hike

  2065. up a mountain

  2066. no jesus

  2067. himself is

  2068. going to

  2069. pull us

  2070. and pull us

  2071. up from the

  2072. earth to

  2073. meet him in

  2074. the sky as

  2075. he comes we're

  2076. going to be

  2077. caught up

  2078. side by side

  2079. we will be

  2080. with the king

  2081. of heaven as

  2082. he finally

  2083. comes down

  2084. as heaven

  2085. finally comes

  2086. and rests

  2087. upon the earth

  2088. you see the

  2089. transfiguration was

  2090. but a glimpse

  2091. but on that

  2092. day our eyes

  2093. are going to

  2094. fully see

  2095. on that day

  2096. our eyes

  2097. are going to

  2098. be a

  2099. transfiguration

  2100. forever

  2101. so why do

  2102. we abandon

  2103. the sure word

  2104. of god

  2105. the light

  2106. of scripture

  2107. to chase

  2108. after made

  2109. up stories

  2110. of others

  2111. stay the

  2112. course

  2113. be reminded

  2114. of the truth

  2115. of the gospel

  2116. that you know

  2117. and you believe

  2118. and are sure

  2119. of for our

  2120. promised and

  2121. sure experience

  2122. of the glory

  2123. and the voice

  2124. of god

  2125. is going to

  2126. be ours

  2127. one day

  2128. amen

  2129. thank you

  2130. to

  2131. try and

  2132. thank you

  2133. go
