  1. Chapter 2

  2. But there are also false prophets amongst the people, just as there will be false teachers among you.

  3. There will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them, bringing swift destruction on them.

  4. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.

  5. In their greed, these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up.

  6. Their condemnation has been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

  7. For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment,

  8. if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people,

  9. but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others,

  10. if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes,

  11. and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly,

  12. And if he rescued Lot, a righteous man who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men,

  13. for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard.

  14. If this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials,

  15. to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.

  16. This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature and despise authority.

  17. Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings.

  18. Yet even angels, although they are stronger, more powerful,

  19. do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord.

  20. But these men blaspheme in matters that they do not understand.

  21. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed.

  22. And like beasts, they too will perish.

  23. Thank you, Maria, for reading.

  24. Thank you, Nick, for leading so well this morning.

  25. As we come to God's word, I'd just like to pray,

  26. and again just ask for his help as we look to understand it.

  27. Our Father, we thank you for the words of Scripture,

  28. which are your clear light to us as we seek to follow you.

  29. Lord, we thank you as well for the Holy Spirit who takes the word of God

  30. and makes it real to us, convicting us of sin and showing us righteousness.

  31. So I ask, Father, that your spirit would be at work among us this morning.

  32. In Jesus' name, amen.

  33. This morning we're starting into chapter 2 of 2 Peter.

    2 Peter 2 chapter mention

  34. Chapter 2 of 2 Peter.

  35. And as we've already read, and as we'll see next week,

  36. Alex is going to be preaching from the second half of the chapter.

  37. It's a difficult chapter.

  38. As you can see, it fits right into the middle of the book.

  39. Second Peter is just three chapters long.

  40. And chapter 2 is this difficult chapter right in the middle

  41. that deals with the whole topic of false teachers.

  42. We might not get a direct sense of it,

  43. but I feel that in a way chapter 1 has been building up to chapter 2.

  44. In a way, chapter 1 has laid groundwork for what we now see in chapter 2.

  45. Because in chapter 1, Peter has been reminding us of what it means to follow Jesus.

  46. To follow Jesus.

  47. To be called by Jesus.

  48. And to live a life of faith and obedience.

  49. That, I believe, is essentially what chapter 1 is about.

  50. So Peter shows them then how to follow Jesus,

  51. how to grow in faith and love and all the things we read from verses 5 to 11

  52. that we are to express through faith, all the characteristics.

  53. And then Peter goes on to show the trustworthiness, his trustworthiness,

  54. that we can trust him by telling his readers of his first-hand experience

  55. on the mountain of seeing Jesus glorified.

  56. And then Peter points them at the end of chapter 1

  57. to the more sure word of scripture,

  58. which is to be their ongoing, continuing light to guide them in their lives.

  59. And as I said, in a sense, chapter 1 has been preparing us

  60. for what we now read in chapter 2.

  61. So Peter, in a sense, I think he's laid a good path, hasn't he?

  62. He's laid the good path for us to follow so that we may reach eternal life.

  63. Let's just read some verses from chapter 1 again, just to remind us.

  64. Verse 10 and 11.

  65. Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure.

  66. For if you do these things, you will never fall,

  67. and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom

  68. of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  69. So Peter has told us about the good path,

  70. but now in chapter 2, he's telling us about another path.

  71. And this is the false path, the crooked path, the path of destruction.

  72. And in a sense, if the good path, the path that we take to eternal life,

  73. is lit by the light of scripture,

  74. then this false path is lit by the light of false teaching.

  75. It's sad, isn't it, that not everyone who calls themselves a teacher is a teacher of truth.

  76. That is clear from the label in verse 1.

  77. They're called false teachers, those who teach lies.

  78. Now, we may be shocked because that's very strong language, isn't it?

  79. False teachers.

  80. You may be shocked to think that there are Christian teachers,

  81. people within the church who teach lies.

  82. But Peter says, Peter says in verse 1,

  83. don't be surprised.

  84. You shouldn't be surprised at this.

  85. For as long as there have been true prophets of God,

  86. there have also been false prophets of God,

  87. side by side with the true prophets of God in the Old Testament,

  88. or false prophets.

  89. There are many, many examples.

  90. And as long as there has been the genuine article,

  91. there has been the counterfeit.

  92. But there were also false prophets, verse 1,

  93. among the people,

  94. just as there will be false teachers among you.

  95. Do not be surprised.

  96. This morning, I'm going to just try and focus in on a few things

  97. to help us understand characteristics of these false teachers.

  98. Four things from the first two verses.

  99. I just have one slide.

  100. They're up there so you know where I'm going.

  101. Keep me straight as well.

  102. And then we're going to look at the rest of the verses

  103. that we've read down to roughly to about verse 10,

  104. and just take them together and see what we are to learn.

  105. Once we see the characteristics, just to understand these two paths.

  106. So I'm just going to go through four things.

  107. It's not going to be very long.

  108. You'll be glad to know it will balance out my overshot last week

  109. of going over 30 minutes.

  110. So you can take the average of the two weeks

  111. and then probably under 30 minutes for both, hopefully.

  112. So the first thing we see from verse 1 is,

  113. they are among you.

  114. They are among you.

  115. We can think of false teachers, can't we,

  116. as being outside of the church.

  117. We can think of many examples.

  118. We can think of paganism.

  119. We can think of atheism.

  120. We can think of secularism.

  121. We can think of all those other religions

  122. and all the other outside religions as being false

  123. or not teaching the truth of Jesus Christ.

  124. But the emphasis here is on the false teachers that are among you.

  125. They are part of the Christian church.

  126. They call themselves Christians.

  127. They use that title.

  128. Jesus had warned, hadn't he previously?

  129. Jesus had told us in Matthew 7, 15,

  130. he said these words,

  131. Watch out, be on the lookout for false prophets.

  132. They come to you in sheep's clothing,

  133. but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

  134. Imagine a wolf going around with a sheepskin.

  135. And that's what it's like, deceptive.

  136. You see, we are the sheep of Jesus' flock,

  137. and he is the chief shepherd.

  138. But among us, among the church,

  139. are false teachers,

  140. ferocious wolves in sheep's clothing.

  141. There is no language mincing there.

  142. There is no making that easier to hear.

  143. And we need to be aware, yes,

  144. of false teaching from outside the church,

  145. but I believe more so,

  146. we need to see the threats from within the Christian community.

  147. So number one, they are among you.

  148. Number two, they have a different message, don't they?

  149. The second part of verse one,

  150. they will secretly introduce destructive heresies,

  151. even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them,

  152. bringing swift destruction on themselves.

  153. You see, the message,

  154. the message that they bring is a different message.

  155. And this is really the central part

  156. to what makes them false teachers, isn't it?

  157. The message is different.

  158. They're bringing a different message,

  159. but it says they're doing it secretly, aren't they?

  160. They're secretly doing it.

  161. They're not open about what those differences are.

  162. They're not being clear what those differences are.

  163. Now, they teach openly, of course.

  164. They're speaking openly.

  165. They're wanting to attract the crowd and the followers.

  166. They don't teach in secret because, well, they're greedy

  167. and they want many followers.

  168. So they're going to teach openly,

  169. but they do not openly tell people

  170. that what they say is a destructive heresy.

  171. That's a big word, heresy.

  172. It's one we don't maybe mention very much now,

  173. and it's one I think we have to tread carefully

  174. because it's a very serious accusation within the church.

  175. So what is heresy?

  176. Well, I think it's any teaching or belief

  177. that denies basic Christian teaching.

  178. It denies the foundation of the gospel.

  179. In this church, and I hope this reassures or helps,

  180. and please come and chat afterwards if it's not clear or you have questions,

  181. but in this church we sometimes have different teachers or preachers

  182. come and speak from the front or minister within the church,

  183. and there are different things that we encourage people to attend

  184. in other churches or activities or books.

  185. We'd recommend all of that.

  186. So we've had people here speaking on a Sunday morning

  187. who come from a different church denomination.

  188. We've had people here that believe different things about baptism

  189. and would even baptize infants.

  190. We've had people here who, speaking here,

  191. who believe and would practice sign gifts,

  192. such as speaking in tongues.

  193. Now, I believe these are differences within the family of God,

  194. but all these people, I believe, are part of God's universal church.

  195. They hold to the true teachings of Jesus, of the gospel message.

  196. The one church, they're part of that,

  197. all those who are saved and rescued by Jesus.

  198. So these differences, I believe, that we have in the church community

  199. between gospel believers are not heresies.

  200. Heresies deny the plain message of Jesus Christ.

  201. A heretic, a heresy, might deny that Jesus is God.

  202. You can't get more fundamental than that in Christian understanding.

  203. They might deny that God is a trinity,

  204. that God is three persons in one.

  205. Heretics will deny that the judgment is coming.

  206. They deny the commands of our Lord to live a godly and upright life.

  207. You know, heresy is that we deny that we are saved

  208. only by the grace of God through faith in Jesus.

  209. A heretic will, that's one of the things a heretic might deny.

  210. These things, these things are heresies.

  211. To deny the Lord as God,

  212. to deny God in three persons,

  213. to deny how we are saved by faith

  214. through grace in Christ alone.

  215. And we would never knowingly allow people

  216. who hold to heresy to speak

  217. or to teach within this church.

  218. Their message is different, isn't it?

  219. What we've read and it's sprinkled

  220. throughout these verses.

  221. It is one of shameful ways in verse 2.

  222. Their message is one of greed.

  223. You see that in verse 3?

  224. Verse 3 says that they speak with stories they have made up.

  225. Verse 10.

  226. Start of verse 10.

  227. They follow corrupt desires

  228. and they despise authority.

  229. Now we don't have time to go into it in detail,

  230. but if you look back at chapter 1,

  231. there's a contrast there, isn't it?

  232. From the gospel way and the gospel message.

  233. The gospel message in chapter 1

  234. doesn't speak of shameful ways.

  235. It speaks of godly ways.

  236. Instead of greed,

  237. we're encouraged to develop brotherly kindness,

  238. to love and care for one another as brothers,

  239. not to be greedy.

  240. Peter in verse 16 in chapter 1

  241. says that, you know,

  242. I'm coming to you with true stories

  243. instead of these made up stories.

  244. In chapter 1,

  245. we escape.

  246. We escape from evil desires

  247. while these false teachers

  248. are full of corrupt desires.

  249. Verse 19 in chapter 1.

  250. We follow the authority of scripture

  251. instead of the false teachers

  252. in chapter 2, verse 10,

  253. who despise authority.

  254. Do you see the kind of contrasts?

  255. Because I think chapter 2 is hard

  256. to just stand on its own.

  257. We have to look back at chapter 1,

  258. the groundwork,

  259. the path that's been laid for us

  260. under the light of scripture

  261. of how we should live.

  262. And then we see the false teachers

  263. so clearly, don't we?

  264. Because it's a contrast.

  265. It's a contrast.

  266. They are complete opposites.

  267. Number 3.

  268. Number 3.

  269. These false teachers

  270. have many followers.

  271. Verse 2.

  272. Just the first part of it.

  273. Many will follow

  274. their shameful ways.

  275. This saddens me

  276. to read these words.

  277. Instead of

  278. instead of these false teachers

  279. being on the fringe,

  280. instead of these false teachers

  281. being the minority,

  282. these false teachers

  283. seem to attract

  284. many followers.

  285. Their message promises

  286. quick gain.

  287. Quick gains.

  288. Quick gains.

  289. Quick gains.

  290. Greed.

  291. And many are led astray.

  292. Whole churches

  293. and congregations,

  294. denominations,

  295. will follow after

  296. these men and women.

  297. They plant,

  298. they plant in the hearts

  299. of people

  300. false teachings

  301. about Jesus.

  302. And the result

  303. is that many,

  304. verse 2,

  305. will follow

  306. their shameful ways.

  307. Do you know

  308. that Christianity

  309. is still the world's

  310. largest religion

  311. by followers?

  312. The largest religion

  313. by followers.

  314. So if you look

  315. at the statistics,

  316. one in every

  317. three people

  318. in the world

  319. carry the label

  320. Christian.

  321. One in every three.

  322. That's 2.1 billion people

  323. carry the label Christian.

  324. In Ireland,

  325. we have an even

  326. higher ratio.

  327. Nine out of every

  328. ten people

  329. in Ireland

  330. have the label

  331. Christian.

  332. They say that they

  333. follow Jesus Christ.

  334. Think about that

  335. for a minute.

  336. One out of every

  337. three people in the world

  338. and nine out of

  339. every ten in Ireland.

  340. Now ask the question,

  341. are one in every

  342. three people

  343. in the world

  344. following

  345. the path

  346. of chapter 1?

  347. Are they living

  348. the words

  349. of chapter 1?

  350. Now I'm not talking

  351. about struggling

  352. in your Christian

  353. life or struggling

  354. with sin,

  355. but is that their

  356. heart's desire?

  357. Are nine out of ten

  358. people in Ireland

  359. following the words

  360. of chapter 1?

  361. No,

  362. they are not.

  363. For many of that

  364. 2.1 billion people

  365. in the world

  366. are following

  367. the shameful

  368. ways

  369. of false

  370. teachers.

  371. And that's

  372. sad.

  373. That is sad.

  374. Teaching that

  375. says things like,

  376. you know,

  377. you just need to

  378. live as you like.

  379. Try your best.

  380. Do good

  381. as far as you can.

  382. In the end,

  383. Jesus will forgive you.

  384. No talk about

  385. faith

  386. or grace

  387. or what it

  388. cost the Father

  389. to send the Son

  390. to die for our sin.

  391. Just

  392. a false message.

  393. There's teaching

  394. that says that,

  395. well,

  396. Jesus just died

  397. to give you

  398. a victorious life

  399. now.

  400. You just need

  401. to claim His

  402. promise

  403. for health

  404. and wealth.

  405. And they say

  406. your best life

  407. is now

  408. and don't

  409. understand

  410. what it is

  411. we are called

  412. to and a reward

  413. in heaven.

  414. A false

  415. message of hope

  416. now.

  417. You know,

  418. when you put it

  419. like that,

  420. you can see

  421. the appeal

  422. of false

  423. teaching.

  424. It always

  425. has been,

  426. back in the Old

  427. Testament,

  428. in the New

  429. Testament,

  430. it always has

  431. been,

  432. always will be

  433. just very,

  434. very popular.

  435. Many will

  436. follow.

  437. It's always

  438. going to be

  439. more popular

  440. than saying,

  441. take up

  442. your cross

  443. and follow

  444. me.

  445. It's always

  446. going to be

  447. more popular

  448. than saying,

  449. instead of

  450. storing up

  451. things on

  452. earth,

  453. Jesus says,

  454. but store

  455. up for

  456. yourself

  457. treasures

  458. in heaven

  459. where moths

  460. and vermin

  461. do not

  462. destroy and

  463. where thieves

  464. do not

  465. break in

  466. and steal.

  467. That's always

  468. going to be

  469. a harder

  470. message.

  471. It's always

  472. going to be

  473. a harder

  474. message.

  475. Number four,

  476. false

  477. teachers,

  478. they bring

  479. the way

  480. of Jesus

  481. into

  482. disrepute.

  483. Do you

  484. see that

  485. at the

  486. end of

  487. verse two?

  488. Start of

  489. verse two.

  490. Many will

  491. follow their

  492. shameful ways

  493. and will

  494. bring the

  495. way of

  496. truth

  497. into

  498. disrepute.

  499. Into

  500. disrepute.

  501. If you're

  502. not a

  503. follower of

  504. Jesus

  505. this morning,

  506. then I am

  507. sorry and

  508. saddened for

  509. this mess.

  510. as you

  511. look on

  512. at churches

  513. and as you

  514. look on

  515. at denominations

  516. and even

  517. as you

  518. see individual

  519. Christians as

  520. they're featured

  521. on the news

  522. sometimes,

  523. you're turned

  524. off.

  525. For Christians

  526. appear to be

  527. nothing more

  528. than hypocritical

  529. liars feasting

  530. on the weak

  531. and the

  532. vulnerable.

  533. Given what

  534. we've read,

  535. given what we

  536. know and

  537. given what we

  538. see in the

  539. news and

  540. media,

  541. you would

  542. be right

  543. to believe

  544. that about

  545. Christians

  546. based on

  547. what you

  548. see.

  549. For the

  550. false

  551. teachers

  552. and those

  553. that follow

  554. them bring

  555. the way of

  556. truth into

  557. disrepute.

  558. They bring

  559. it into

  560. disrepute.

  561. Because of

  562. false teachers,

  563. people,

  564. others,

  565. outsiders,

  566. those that

  567. know they

  568. aren't

  569. Christians,

  570. they laugh

  571. at and they

  572. mock God.

  573. They laugh

  574. at him and

  575. they mock

  576. him.

  577. They ridicule

  578. us,

  579. they ridicule

  580. people that

  581. are looking

  582. to follow

  583. Jesus.

  584. What?

  585. You're a

  586. Christian?

  587. You really

  588. take that

  589. seriously?

  590. The news

  591. and the

  592. media are

  593. always going

  594. to highlight

  595. the false

  596. teachers,

  597. the charlatans,

  598. those that

  599. make a

  600. mockery of

  601. the gospel

  602. of Jesus.

  603. So the

  604. way of

  605. Jesus is

  606. going to

  607. be mocked,

  608. it's going

  609. to be

  610. maligned,

  611. it's going

  612. to be

  613. brought into

  614. disrepute.

  615. But if

  616. you're not

  617. a follower

  618. of Jesus,

  619. do not

  620. give up

  621. because of

  622. this.

  623. Do not

  624. give up.

  625. Scottish

  626. pastor

  627. Colin

  628. Smith put

  629. it like

  630. this,

  631. commenting on

  632. these verses.

  633. He says,

  634. one of the

  635. strangest

  636. reasons for

  637. not following

  638. Christ goes

  639. like this,

  640. and maybe

  641. you've heard

  642. this from

  643. people.

  644. You know,

  645. I've seen

  646. people in

  647. church that

  648. are hypocrites.

  649. I'm not

  650. going to

  651. follow that.

  652. So you

  653. will not

  654. follow

  655. Christ

  656. because

  657. some

  658. people

  659. who

  660. claim

  661. to

  662. do

  663. so

  664. are

  665. hypocrites.

  666. The existence

  667. of the

  668. counterfeit

  669. is never

  670. a good

  671. reason for

  672. rejecting the

  673. genuine.

  674. genuine.

  675. Let me say

  676. that again.

  677. The existence

  678. of a

  679. counterfeit is

  680. never a good

  681. reason for

  682. rejecting the

  683. genuine.

  684. And Peter

  685. essentially tells

  686. us, of course

  687. there are

  688. counterfeit

  689. Christians.

  690. Of course

  691. there are

  692. teachers who

  693. do the

  694. church more

  695. harm than

  696. good.

  697. What else

  698. would you

  699. expect in a

  700. fallen world?

  701. He says,

  702. grow up.

  703. Don't be

  704. naive.

  705. Don't miss

  706. what's

  707. real.

  708. Simply

  709. because you've

  710. seen the

  711. counterfeit.

  712. And there's a

  713. challenge there

  714. isn't there?

  715. For us if

  716. we're put

  717. off by the

  718. hypocrisy,

  719. if we're put

  720. off by what

  721. we see from

  722. other Christians,

  723. yes there is

  724. the counterfeit,

  725. but don't be

  726. put off from

  727. the genuine

  728. because of

  729. that.

  730. There are

  731. four things

  732. I think that

  733. come out

  734. in the first

  735. couple of

  736. verses.

  737. Let's just

  738. recap them.

  739. False

  740. teachers are

  741. among us.

  742. They're not

  743. just from

  744. outside,

  745. but they

  746. are among

  747. us as

  748. Christians.

  749. They come

  750. with a

  751. different

  752. message.

  753. They speak

  754. heresy.

  755. They're going

  756. to have many

  757. followers,

  758. and they

  759. bring,

  760. as a result,

  761. the way of

  762. Jesus into

  763. disrepute.

  764. Verses

  765. 3 to

  766. 10,

  767. the latter

  768. part of

  769. verse 3 to

  770. 10,

  771. there's a lot

  772. in there,

  773. and are

  774. difficult

  775. verses.

  776. We're just

  777. going to go

  778. through a

  779. brief overview.

  780. If you have

  781. any questions,

  782. because I

  783. realize there

  784. is a lot

  785. in there,

  786. please do

  787. come and

  788. ask.

  789. I'm very

  790. happy to

  791. explore it

  792. a bit more

  793. and to

  794. understand it

  795. a bit more.

  796. But as we

  797. read from

  798. verse 3,

  799. the second

  800. half of it,

  801. it says,

  802. their

  803. condemnation

  804. has been

  805. hanging over

  806. them,

  807. and their

  808. destruction

  809. has not

  810. been

  811. sleeping.

  812. And Peter

  813. takes that

  814. little bit

  815. at the end

  816. of verse 3

  817. and begins

  818. to unpack it

  819. through the

  820. rest of

  821. chapter 2.

  822. So after

  823. characterizing

  824. what false

  825. teachers are

  826. like,

  827. Peter is

  828. moving to

  829. their destiny.

  830. He's moving

  831. to what their

  832. destiny is.

  833. In chapter 1,

  834. remember those

  835. verses that we

  836. looked at in

  837. verse 10 and

  838. 11,

  839. and to me

  840. it's the

  841. pinnacle of

  842. chapter 1 in

  843. a sense.

  844. It's the pinnacle

  845. of the gospel

  846. message.

  847. It's Peter saying,

  848. live in faith

  849. and keep growing

  850. in your faith

  851. and add these

  852. characteristics of

  853. godliness and

  854. self-control and

  855. brotherly kindness

  856. and all these

  857. wonderful things

  858. and you're

  859. going to get

  860. there.

  861. You will get

  862. there.

  863. Jesus is going

  864. to call you

  865. and he's

  866. elected you

  867. and you're

  868. going to get

  869. there.

  870. Just stay

  871. on the path.

  872. That's our

  873. destiny.

  874. The destiny

  875. of those that

  876. are called on

  877. the path of

  878. the gospel is

  879. eternal life

  880. and a reward

  881. in heaven.

  882. Now in

  883. chapter 2,

  884. Peter turns to

  885. what lies at

  886. the end of

  887. the path for

  888. the false

  889. teachers.

  890. It's a

  891. different path,

  892. remember,

  893. and it has a

  894. different destination.

  895. And he says

  896. in verse 3,

  897. it's condemnation

  898. and destruction.

  899. You know,

  900. we're saddened,

  901. I think,

  902. when we read

  903. through the

  904. characteristics of

  905. the false

  906. teachers and

  907. see the

  908. destruction that

  909. they wage on

  910. people's lives

  911. and on the

  912. gospel.

  913. And we're

  914. saddened to

  915. think that

  916. people are

  917. led astray

  918. and people are

  919. exploited by a

  920. message of

  921. greed.

  922. And we ask,

  923. where is God?

  924. Why is God

  925. allowing this

  926. to happen?

  927. Couldn't he

  928. even protect

  929. his own

  930. message?

  931. But Peter

  932. tells us that

  933. God is just.

  934. He is not

  935. sitting by

  936. while false

  937. teachers are

  938. running amok.

  939. In chapter 1,

  940. God shows us

  941. his love

  942. in electing

  943. and rescuing

  944. his people

  945. and bringing

  946. them to their

  947. eternal reward.

  948. Now in

  949. chapter 2,

  950. I believe God

  951. is showing us

  952. his great

  953. justice in

  954. dealing with

  955. false teachers

  956. who ruin

  957. the faith

  958. of many.

  959. Verse 4

  960. to 8,

  961. very dense,

  962. there's a lot

  963. in there,

  964. but it gives

  965. us three

  966. examples from

  967. the past,

  968. from the Old

  969. Testament,

  970. showing how

  971. God is able

  972. to sift out

  973. and to judge

  974. the ungodly.

  975. And the

  976. first example

  977. is how he

  978. dealt with

  979. rebellious angels.

  980. And I think

  981. we always get

  982. a little bit

  983. excited when

  984. we're talking

  985. about the

  986. heavenly realms

  987. because it's

  988. something that's

  989. unseen,

  990. it's supernatural.

  991. Now we don't

  992. know everything

  993. there is to

  994. know about

  995. the heavenly

  996. realms and

  997. angels.

  998. God has

  999. given us

  1000. what he has

  1001. given us

  1002. and we know

  1003. certain things.

  1004. So it's

  1005. hard to know

  1006. when this

  1007. rebellion took

  1008. place exactly

  1009. or what was

  1010. all involved.

  1011. But what we

  1012. do know from

  1013. these verses

  1014. is that in

  1015. the past,

  1016. that the

  1017. angels,

  1018. the heavenly

  1019. beings created

  1020. by God,

  1021. rebelled in

  1022. sin against

  1023. their creator.

  1024. And many

  1025. of those angels

  1026. are being

  1027. held,

  1028. it says,

  1029. in hell

  1030. awaiting their

  1031. final judgment.

  1032. God did

  1033. God did not

  1034. spare his

  1035. own angels

  1036. when it

  1037. came to

  1038. judgment.

  1039. When it

  1040. came to

  1041. judgment,

  1042. God did

  1043. not spare

  1044. his own

  1045. angels.

  1046. The second

  1047. example is

  1048. how he dealt

  1049. with the

  1050. ancient world.

  1051. I was just

  1052. looking actually

  1053. yesterday,

  1054. there's,

  1055. it'll be

  1056. interesting to

  1057. see how

  1058. they do it,

  1059. but in

  1060. 2014,

  1061. there's a

  1062. Russell Crowe

  1063. film that's

  1064. coming out

  1065. called Noah.

  1066. Noah.

  1067. It'll be

  1068. very exciting,

  1069. especially for

  1070. our youngest,

  1071. because that's

  1072. his name,

  1073. but it'll be

  1074. interesting to

  1075. see how they

  1076. deal with it,

  1077. because in

  1078. the early days

  1079. of human

  1080. history,

  1081. God flooded

  1082. the whole

  1083. earth,

  1084. and only

  1085. eight people

  1086. survived.

  1087. God did

  1088. not spare

  1089. the ancient

  1090. world.

  1091. Judgment

  1092. came swiftly,

  1093. but it says

  1094. God knew

  1095. how to

  1096. rescue

  1097. Noah.

  1098. You see

  1099. that?

  1100. God knew

  1101. how to

  1102. rescue

  1103. Noah.

  1104. God gave

  1105. instructions,

  1106. didn't he,

  1107. to Noah to

  1108. build a

  1109. boat,

  1110. an ark,

  1111. to ensure

  1112. that when

  1113. judgment came

  1114. that they

  1115. would be

  1116. protected.

  1117. So even

  1118. in the

  1119. midst of

  1120. a flood,

  1121. even in

  1122. the midst

  1123. of worldwide

  1124. destruction,

  1125. God knew.

  1126. God knew

  1127. how to

  1128. rescue Noah.

  1129. The third

  1130. example,

  1131. the cities

  1132. of Sodom

  1133. and Gomorrah,

  1134. they were

  1135. cities that

  1136. were literally

  1137. thriving and

  1138. full of sin

  1139. and rebellion

  1140. and all

  1141. the chains

  1142. were off,

  1143. all the

  1144. restrictions

  1145. were off.

  1146. These were

  1147. people that

  1148. lived with

  1149. no reference

  1150. to God.

  1151. Everyone doing

  1152. what was right

  1153. in their own

  1154. eyes.

  1155. People turned

  1156. away from

  1157. God and

  1158. they involved

  1159. themselves in

  1160. whatever sin

  1161. they desired.

  1162. God knew

  1163. how to destroy

  1164. those cities

  1165. and at the

  1166. same time

  1167. he knew

  1168. how to

  1169. rescue

  1170. Lot.

  1171. Remember

  1172. God sent

  1173. his angels

  1174. to instruct

  1175. Lot and

  1176. his family

  1177. to flee

  1178. and they

  1179. had to

  1180. work really

  1181. hard to

  1182. get Lot

  1183. to flee.

  1184. He didn't

  1185. want to

  1186. flee.

  1187. He didn't

  1188. understand what

  1189. was happening.

  1190. But there

  1191. were very

  1192. specific,

  1193. very clear

  1194. instructions.

  1195. Keep going.

  1196. Don't look

  1197. back.

  1198. Go to the

  1199. hills.

  1200. Bit of

  1201. negotiation.

  1202. No, we'll

  1203. go to this

  1204. town instead.

  1205. Okay, but

  1206. don't look

  1207. back.

  1208. Keep going.

  1209. God knew

  1210. how to

  1211. save them

  1212. in the midst

  1213. of destruction.

  1214. And these

  1215. verses, these

  1216. are all the

  1217. past judgments

  1218. showing that

  1219. God takes

  1220. sin and

  1221. rebellion

  1222. seriously.

  1223. We think

  1224. that God

  1225. doesn't at

  1226. times, don't

  1227. we?

  1228. We don't

  1229. see his

  1230. judgments

  1231. being meted

  1232. out like

  1233. this all

  1234. the time.

  1235. But they

  1236. show as

  1237. well, don't

  1238. they, that

  1239. God knows

  1240. how to

  1241. keep his

  1242. people safe

  1243. in the

  1244. midst of

  1245. judgment.

  1246. God

  1247. showed his

  1248. people the

  1249. path to

  1250. safety, the

  1251. path to

  1252. eternal

  1253. life.

  1254. And then

  1255. we come

  1256. to verse

  1257. nine.

  1258. And verses

  1259. four to

  1260. eight are

  1261. giving examples

  1262. from the

  1263. past and

  1264. they're almost

  1265. the lesser

  1266. example.

  1267. Peter here is

  1268. arguing from

  1269. the less

  1270. these things

  1271. in the past

  1272. to the more.

  1273. Verse nine.

  1274. And this is

  1275. what he says.

  1276. If this is

  1277. so, these

  1278. three examples,

  1279. then the

  1280. Lord knows

  1281. how to

  1282. rescue godly

  1283. men from

  1284. trials and

  1285. to hold

  1286. the unrighteous

  1287. for the day

  1288. of judgment

  1289. while continuing

  1290. their punishment.

  1291. False

  1292. teachers

  1293. look like

  1294. they're

  1295. working in

  1296. the world

  1297. with impunity.

  1298. It looks

  1299. like they're

  1300. doing as

  1301. they wish

  1302. without any

  1303. fear.

  1304. But the

  1305. Lord tells

  1306. us,

  1307. doesn't he,

  1308. in verse

  1309. three,

  1310. and he

  1311. unpacks it

  1312. in those

  1313. other verses,

  1314. that their

  1315. condemnation is

  1316. hanging over

  1317. them.

  1318. It says it's

  1319. going to be

  1320. swift.

  1321. What does

  1322. that mean?

  1323. Because it's

  1324. not.

  1325. They carry

  1326. on destructive

  1327. teachings and

  1328. people are

  1329. led astray and

  1330. we think of

  1331. swift as

  1332. immediate,

  1333. but it's

  1334. not immediate,

  1335. is it?

  1336. Why is

  1337. that?

  1338. Well, I

  1339. believe it is

  1340. delayed now

  1341. so that they

  1342. would turn

  1343. even now

  1344. and repent.

  1345. Let's look,

  1346. just turn over

  1347. the page,

  1348. chapter three

  1349. and verse

  1350. nine.

  1351. And this is

  1352. Peter writing

  1353. in response

  1354. to the

  1355. scoffers,

  1356. the people

  1357. that say,

  1358. where is

  1359. God's

  1360. coming?

  1361. Where is

  1362. his judgment?

  1363. Everything's

  1364. going on as

  1365. it always

  1366. has.

  1367. God isn't

  1368. coming back.

  1369. He doesn't

  1370. care.

  1371. Why the

  1372. delay?

  1373. And Peter

  1374. says in

  1375. verse nine,

  1376. the Lord

  1377. is not

  1378. slow in

  1379. keeping his

  1380. promise,

  1381. as some

  1382. understand

  1383. slowness.

  1384. He is

  1385. patient with

  1386. you.

  1387. Read these

  1388. words.

  1389. Not wanting

  1390. anyone to

  1391. perish,

  1392. but everyone

  1393. to come

  1394. to repentance.

  1395. You see

  1396. that?

  1397. Everyone?

  1398. Everyone?

  1399. Including

  1400. those in

  1401. chapter two

  1402. that have

  1403. done so

  1404. much damage?

  1405. Yes,

  1406. everyone.

  1407. The Lord

  1408. in his

  1409. will of

  1410. desire,

  1411. desires that

  1412. all people

  1413. would repent

  1414. and come

  1415. to him.

  1416. His swift

  1417. judgment in

  1418. terms of the

  1419. immediacy of

  1420. it is being

  1421. held off.

  1422. It's being

  1423. held off.

  1424. But when it

  1425. comes,

  1426. it will be

  1427. swift.

  1428. When judgment

  1429. finally comes,

  1430. it's going to

  1431. be like the

  1432. flood.

  1433. When judgment

  1434. finally comes,

  1435. it's going to

  1436. be like that

  1437. hailstone storm

  1438. that fell from

  1439. heaven and

  1440. destroyed those

  1441. cities.

  1442. Judgment is

  1443. swift when it

  1444. comes, but

  1445. God in his

  1446. mercy, he's

  1447. holding it

  1448. back.

  1449. He's holding

  1450. it back until

  1451. that day.

  1452. And that's not

  1453. slowness.

  1454. That's not slowness.

  1455. That's God's

  1456. love.

  1457. That's God's

  1458. patience.

  1459. God knows

  1460. even with

  1461. people who

  1462. teach false

  1463. things.

  1464. So these

  1465. verses in

  1466. chapter 2,

  1467. even though

  1468. they're hard

  1469. and about the

  1470. false teachers,

  1471. I think they

  1472. help us to

  1473. know what

  1474. the path,

  1475. the gospel of

  1476. Jesus Christ

  1477. is like.

  1478. That that

  1479. path is the

  1480. safe path to

  1481. be on.

  1482. You see, it

  1483. says God

  1484. knows how to

  1485. rescue us.

  1486. Stay on this

  1487. path.

  1488. Stay on this

  1489. path.

  1490. God knows.

  1491. God knows how

  1492. to rescue

  1493. you.

  1494. Keep on that

  1495. path.

  1496. But these

  1497. verses also

  1498. serve as a

  1499. warning, don't

  1500. they?

  1501. They serve as

  1502. a warning.

  1503. And especially

  1504. to those of

  1505. us who teach

  1506. God's word.

  1507. And there are

  1508. many within

  1509. the life of

  1510. the church that

  1511. teach and

  1512. encourage and

  1513. pass on God's

  1514. word.

  1515. More so,

  1516. Johnny as our

  1517. pastor and as

  1518. our main

  1519. teacher and

  1520. others who

  1521. are up here

  1522. and preaching

  1523. from the

  1524. front.

  1525. He serve as

  1526. a warning.

  1527. And the

  1528. words of

  1529. James puts

  1530. it quite

  1531. simply.

  1532. He says,

  1533. not many of

  1534. you should

  1535. presume to

  1536. be teachers,

  1537. my brothers,

  1538. because you

  1539. know that we

  1540. who teach will

  1541. be judged

  1542. more strictly.

  1543. Now, I

  1544. don't think

  1545. that's intended

  1546. to put people

  1547. off from

  1548. pursuing the

  1549. ability to

  1550. teach and

  1551. the gifting

  1552. and to

  1553. explore that.

  1554. It's not to

  1555. put you off,

  1556. but it's

  1557. just a word

  1558. of warning.

  1559. Keep on

  1560. this path if

  1561. you're going

  1562. to teach.

  1563. Keep on

  1564. this path.

  1565. You see,

  1566. words of

  1567. teaching,

  1568. what we

  1569. say can

  1570. lead people

  1571. towards

  1572. righteousness

  1573. and it

  1574. can lead

  1575. people towards

  1576. eternal life

  1577. or they

  1578. can lead

  1579. people towards

  1580. rebellion and

  1581. it can lead

  1582. people towards

  1583. destruction.

  1584. There are two

  1585. paths.

  1586. There are two

  1587. paths to

  1588. follow.

  1589. we need

  1590. to recognize

  1591. the characteristics

  1592. that's why we

  1593. have chapter

  1594. two, isn't

  1595. it?

  1596. We need to

  1597. recognize the

  1598. characteristics of

  1599. false teachers

  1600. so that we

  1601. can make sure

  1602. that we're on

  1603. the right

  1604. path.

  1605. What's

  1606. interesting about

  1607. the paths

  1608. as they

  1609. meander,

  1610. one of them

  1611. is maybe a

  1612. little bit

  1613. narrower,

  1614. another one

  1615. is broader,

  1616. but they're

  1617. going to

  1618. intersect at

  1619. a point in

  1620. future history,

  1621. aren't they?

  1622. Those two

  1623. paths are

  1624. going to come

  1625. to the

  1626. judgment

  1627. seat of

  1628. Jesus.

  1629. And as we

  1630. reach that

  1631. point and

  1632. we're before

  1633. Jesus and

  1634. he is on

  1635. his judgment

  1636. seat to

  1637. just judge,

  1638. we'll await

  1639. a verdict.

  1640. We'll await

  1641. a verdict.

  1642. We've come

  1643. on our paths

  1644. to this point.

  1645. And for

  1646. some, for

  1647. some, there

  1648. will be the

  1649. simple words

  1650. like those of

  1651. Matthew 25

    Matthew 25:23

  1652. verse 23

  1653. and Jesus

  1654. says,

  1655. well done,

  1656. well done,

  1657. good and

  1658. faithful servant.

  1659. Come,

  1660. come and

  1661. share in

  1662. your master's

  1663. happiness.

  1664. Simple words,

  1665. a word of

  1666. welcome.

  1667. Oh, what a

  1668. joy it will

  1669. be to receive

  1670. a reward that

  1671. day, the

  1672. things that we've

  1673. stored up in

  1674. heaven, the

  1675. treasures,

  1676. and to

  1677. see Jesus,

  1678. our reward,

  1679. to enjoy

  1680. him, to

  1681. see his

  1682. face, to

  1683. know that

  1684. everything that's

  1685. wrong has

  1686. been undone

  1687. and everything

  1688. has been

  1689. made right.

  1690. Oh, to

  1691. see your

  1692. reward, to

  1693. hear those

  1694. words, well

  1695. done, from

  1696. the creator of

  1697. the universe,

  1698. well done,

  1699. well done,

  1700. good and

  1701. faithful servant.

  1702. But for

  1703. others, for

  1704. others there

  1705. will be no

  1706. welcome.

  1707. Instead, the

  1708. conversation at

  1709. the judgment

  1710. seat will be

  1711. more like that

  1712. of Matthew

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  1713. chapter 7.

  1714. And Jesus

  1715. speaking and

  1716. warning and

  1717. letting us

  1718. know, he

  1719. says, not

  1720. everyone that

  1721. says to me on

  1722. that day,

  1723. Lord, Lord,

  1724. will enter the

  1725. kingdom of

  1726. heaven, but

  1727. only those who

  1728. does the will

  1729. of my Father

  1730. who is in

  1731. heaven.

  1732. Many, many

  1733. will say to

  1734. me on that

  1735. day, Lord,

  1736. Lord, didn't

  1737. we, didn't

  1738. we prophesy

  1739. in your

  1740. name?

  1741. Didn't we

  1742. say things

  1743. in your

  1744. name?

  1745. Didn't we

  1746. speak things

  1747. in your

  1748. name?

  1749. And in

  1750. your name,

  1751. didn't we

  1752. drive out

  1753. demons?

  1754. Didn't we

  1755. do that in

  1756. your name?

  1757. And in

  1758. your name,

  1759. did we

  1760. not perform

  1761. many

  1762. miracles?

  1763. Then Jesus

  1764. will say,

  1765. then Jesus

  1766. will tell

  1767. them plainly,

  1768. I never

  1769. knew you.

  1770. I never

  1771. knew you.

  1772. Away from

  1773. me, you

  1774. evildoers.

  1775. Well done,

  1776. away from

  1777. me.

  1778. Well done,

  1779. away from

  1780. me.

  1781. There can

  1782. be no

  1783. greater

  1784. contrast

  1785. between the

  1786. way and

  1787. the path

  1788. of the

  1789. gospel and

  1790. the way

  1791. of the

  1792. false

  1793. teachers.

  1794. So let

  1795. us take

  1796. up our

  1797. cross and

  1798. continue to

  1799. follow Jesus

  1800. to safety.

  1801. Amen.

  1802. Amen.

  1803. Amen.

  1804. Amen.

  1805. Amen.

  1806. Amen.

  1807. Amen.

  1808. Amen.

  1809. Amen.

  1810. Amen.

  1811. Amen.

  1812. Amen.

  1813. Amen.
