  1. 2 Peter 2, verse 12

    2 Peter 2:12

  2. But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand.

  3. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed.

  4. And like beasts, they too will perish.

  5. They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done.

  6. Their idea of pleasure is to crouse in broad daylight.

  7. Their blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.

  8. But eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning.

  9. They seduce the unstable.

  10. They are experts in greed and a cursed brood.

  11. They have left the straightway and wandered off to follow Balaam, son of Beor,

  12. who loved the wages of wickedness.

  13. But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey,

  14. a beast without speech, who spoke with a man's voice and restrained the prophet's madness.

  15. These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm,

  16. blackest darkness is reserved for them.

  17. For they mouth empty, boastful words,

  18. and by appealing to the lustful desires of a sinful human nature,

  19. they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error.

  20. They promised them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity.

  21. For a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.

  22. If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,

  23. and are again entangled in it and overcome,

  24. they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.

  25. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness,

  26. than to have known it,

  27. and then to turn their backs on the sacred command which was passed on to them.

  28. Of them the Proverbs are true,

  29. a dog returns to its vomit,

  30. and the sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud.

  31. Okay, just ask Alex to come up now,

  32. and he'll be speaking to us from the other day.

  33. Just pray for him before he speaks.

  34. Alex?

  35. Okay, let's pray.

  36. Loving Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word,

  37. and thank you for its availability to us in our own language.

  38. Lord, we just pray that you would teach us from it.

  39. We pray that you would help Alex this morning as he opens up this passage, Lord,

  40. and explains it to us,

  41. and explains to us what you have been teaching him from it, Lord,

  42. and pray that we would learn from it.

  43. Help us, Lord, as I said already,

  44. not to be just hearers of the word,

  45. to be doers of it,

  46. and to be mindful and guardful against false teachers.

  47. And just pray that you would just bless Alex as he speaks to us,

  48. and bless us as we listen.

  49. We ask these things, Lord Jesus, in your name.

  50. Amen.

  51. Amen.

  52. Thanks, Ian.

  53. So before I start,

  54. if you'd like to just keep your Bibles open,

  55. because we're going to be really spending a lot of time

  56. looking at exactly what that passage says.

  57. So keep your Bibles open,

  58. and if you have your notice sheet,

  59. there's a blank sheet at the back of it, I think,

  60. so you can take notes,

  61. and there are pencils and pens at the back.

  62. If you'd like to put your hand up,

  63. Shane might give you one.

  64. So you can take notes.

  65. Thank you.

  66. So it's been great,

  67. these last few weeks,

  68. preparing this,

  69. because this is a passage that,

  70. when I first looked at weeks ago,

  71. I was scratching my head,

  72. and I had no idea what it was on about.

  73. So it was a great opportunity to really spend time

  74. looking at this passage,

  75. praying through it,

  76. speaking with people about it,

  77. and just have the Spirit,

  78. through the Word,

  79. and through other people,

  80. explain it to me.

  81. So that's what I'm going to try and do this morning,

  82. is to pass that message on to you,

  83. with the grace of God.

  84. So,

  85. my parents are keen gardeners,

  86. maybe that's where I get it from,

  87. but as a child,

  88. they would ask me,

  89. all that they would ask me to do in the garden,

  90. was to pull weeds.

  91. I hated pulling weeds.

  92. It was boring and slow,

  93. and no matter what I did,

  94. no matter how good a job I did,

  95. I'd come back a week later,

  96. and they'd all be back again.

  97. But living on a farm,

  98. my parents are fairly clued in

  99. to what is a wanted plant,

  100. and what is not wanted.

  101. So they know the difference,

  102. for example,

  103. between a rose and a buttercup,

  104. a hogweed,

  105. and a hollyhock.

  106. However,

  107. a while ago,

  108. they asked me to identify a flower.

  109. It's up there on the screen,

  110. and it's there on top of the elephant.

  111. They were admiring the beauty

  112. of its colour,

  113. of its shape,

  114. of its texture,

  115. of its symmetry,

  116. but they weren't sure what it was.

  117. They didn't know what it was called,

  118. and they couldn't remember planting it anywhere.

  119. I took one look at them,

  120. and I warned them,

  121. get rid of it straight away,

  122. dispose of it,

  123. root it out,

  124. dig it out,

  125. kill it.

  126. Any roots that might still exist,

  127. rip them out as well.

  128. In fact,

  129. once they had done that,

  130. I advised them to keep watch,

  131. and at the very first sign of it re-emerging,

  132. to spray it with weed killer,

  133. so they would kill it down to the roots,

  134. and destroy it completely.

  135. You see,

  136. the false teachers in today's passage,

  137. are very much like this nuisance weed,

  138. called bindweed.

  139. They took,

  140. they look the part,

  141. they fit comfortably into our gardens,

  142. even leaving a lovely floral display,

  143. so we don't think they're harmful.

  144. The weeds are there in the ground,

  145. waiting for the right conditions,

  146. or the right plants,

  147. to latch onto.

  148. They wind their way onto,

  149. or into,

  150. a host plant,

  151. and they start taking it over,

  152. stopping its growth,

  153. as it robs the plant of daylight,

  154. air,

  155. and often,

  156. its very life.

  157. Today,

  158. this passage,

  159. also comes with a stark warning,

  160. to us all.

  161. We,

  162. the church,

  163. or the family of Jesus Christ,

  164. are in danger,

  165. of being taken over,

  166. having our growth stunted,

  167. or worse,

  168. stopped,

  169. by false teachers.

  170. Parading is harmless,

  171. if not beautiful,

  172. and very often,

  173. plausible,

  174. they let us believe,

  175. that there is no danger,

  176. and they might even improve us,

  177. or add something,

  178. to our church.

  179. False teachers,

  180. are as prevalent today,

  181. as they were,

  182. at the time of Peter,

  183. writing this letter.

  184. This warning,

  185. is not just for teachers,

  186. in churches,

  187. or Sunday schools.

  188. We all play a teaching role,

  189. in some ways.

  190. Be it on a Sunday morning,

  191. or at home with our kids.

  192. How we live out our daily lives,

  193. in work,

  194. or at home,

  195. will be seen,

  196. and noticed,

  197. as what our teaching is,

  198. and what our message is.

  199. So we need to be very careful,

  200. that our lifestyle,

  201. speaks well of Jesus,

  202. and reflects our message,

  203. and that our message,

  204. about Jesus,

  205. is backed up,

  206. by our lifestyle,

  207. or our actions.

  208. So how do we recognize,

  209. a false teacher?

  210. Who will they be?

  211. Let's look at the word.

  212. Chapter 2,

  213. verse 1.

  214. But there were also,

  215. false prophets,

  216. among the people.

  217. Just as,

  218. there will be,

  219. false teachers,

  220. among you.

  221. They will secretly,

  222. introduce,

  223. destructive heresies,

  224. even denying,

  225. the sovereign Lord,

  226. who brought,

  227. who bought them,

  228. bringing swift destruction,

  229. on themselves.

  230. Who will they be?

  231. They will be among us.

  232. They will be,

  233. teachers of the word,

  234. church leaders,

  235. youth club leaders,

  236. Sunday school teachers,

  237. parents.

  238. They are people,

  239. who claim to know Christ,

  240. but whose lifestyle,

  241. and message,

  242. show that they are not,

  243. living as Christians.

  244. Those who live,

  245. in such a way,

  246. that they have surrendered,

  247. to God's word,

  248. his authority,

  249. and those,

  250. whose very nature,

  251. has been transformed,

  252. by the grace,

  253. of Jesus.

  254. Their lifestyle,

  255. and their behavior,

  256. will give them away.

  257. Let's read verse 12.

  258. But these men,

  259. blaspheme in matters,

  260. they do not understand.

  261. They are like,

  262. brute beasts,

  263. creatures of instinct,

  264. born only to be caught,

  265. and destroyed.

  266. And like beasts,

  267. they too will perish.

  268. This means,

  269. that they are insolent.

  270. They are guilty,

  271. of arrogant conduct,

  272. or insulting,

  273. bold behavior,

  274. or attitude.

  275. To blaspheme,

  276. is to simply,

  277. speak evil of.

  278. A brute beast,

  279. is translated,

  280. literally as,

  281. irrational.

  282. Verse 13.

  283. They will be paid back,

  284. with harm,

  285. for the harm,

  286. they have done.

  287. Their idea of pleasure,

  288. is to carouse,

  289. in broad daylight.

  290. They are blots,

  291. and blemishes,

  292. reveling in their pleasures,

  293. while they feast with you.

  294. Well,

  295. that means simply,

  296. that they are licentious.

  297. They are lacking restraint,

  298. or ignoring societal standards.

  299. Disregarding,

  300. accepted rules,

  301. particularly,

  302. with regard to,

  303. sexual conduct.

  304. They do,

  305. during the daytime,

  306. what others would,

  307. shamefully do,

  308. during the night.

  309. Such is their disregard,

  310. for societal standards.

  311. Verse 14.

  312. With eyes full of adultery,

  313. they never stop sinning.

  314. They seduce the unstable,

  315. they are experts in greed,

  316. and a cursed brood.

  317. They're immoral.

  318. Their eyes are full of adultery,

  319. means that they are always,

  320. looking for a woman,

  321. with which to commit adultery.

  322. Always.

  323. They are completely immoral.

  324. Every time they see a woman,

  325. there's only one thing on their mind.

  326. And these people,

  327. are in our churches,

  328. and they think it's okay.

  329. Verse 14b,

  330. to 16,

  331. says,

  332. they are experts in greed,

  333. and a cursed brood.

  334. They have left a straight way,

  335. and wandered off,

  336. to follow the way,

  337. of Balaam,

  338. son of Beor,

  339. who loved the wages,

  340. of wickedness.

  341. But he was rebuked,

  342. for his wrongdoing,

  343. by a donkey.

  344. A beast without speech,

  345. who spoke with a man's voice,

  346. and restrained,

  347. the prophet's madness.

  348. They are greedy,

  349. looking for ways,

  350. to feather their own nest.

  351. They are ruled,

  352. by money and personal gain.

  353. So that very quickly,

  354. is a snapshot,

  355. of a false teacher's,

  356. lifestyle,

  357. or their behaviour.

  358. But what does all this,

  359. actually look like?

  360. Well,

  361. very simply put,

  362. they're sleazy.

  363. They're men,

  364. checking out women,

  365. all the time,

  366. and lusting after them.

  367. They are women,

  368. who romanticise,

  369. about either,

  370. how they wish,

  371. men would behave,

  372. or how they,

  373. themselves,

  374. could look.

  375. Obsessing about,

  376. physical appearance,

  377. and self-gratification,

  378. and doing so blatantly,

  379. during daytime hours,

  380. shamelessly,

  381. not even hiding it,

  382. until the privacy of darkness,

  383. or night time.

  384. Jesus isn't their God,

  385. they worship themselves.

  386. They are also,

  387. obsessed with money.

  388. Now I don't mean,

  389. for example,

  390. those who meet,

  391. along the street,

  392. and say,

  393. oh,

  394. I love that top you're wearing,

  395. oh,

  396. thanks,

  397. pennies,

  398. fiver.

  399. No,

  400. these people,

  401. are more the Balaam type.

  402. Seriously greedy.

  403. I didn't know much,

  404. about Balaam either,

  405. until I started reading,

  406. but it's a story,

  407. found in the book of Numbers,

    Numbers 22 chapter mention

  408. chapters 22 to 24,

  409. we don't have time,

  410. to read it now,

  411. but I tried to pick out,

  412. the main points.

  413. So here we go,

  414. as a quick summary.

  415. King Balak,

  416. is intimidated,

  417. by the Israelites,

  418. so he sends word,

  419. to the prophet Balaam,

  420. to come to him.

  421. He asked Balaam,

  422. to curse the Israelites,

  423. and offered him,

  424. great wealth,

  425. and great status.

  426. God made it,

  427. very clear to Balaam,

  428. that he was not to go,

  429. or to curse the Israelites.

  430. But Balaam went anyway,

  431. lured by the promise,

  432. of riches,

  433. and status.

  434. Such was his insistence,

  435. on doing things,

  436. his own way.

  437. He didn't even seem,

  438. to be aware,

  439. that eventually,

  440. he was arguing,

  441. with a donkey.

  442. God had to speak to him,

  443. through a donkey,

  444. to get his attention.

  445. It's a great story,

  446. and I do encourage you,

  447. to read it,

  448. in Numbers 22 to 24,

  449. when you get the chance.

  450. But,

  451. who's the donkey now?

  452. Thankfully,

  453. Balaam realised,

  454. he had sinned,

  455. and had been driven,

  456. by greed,

  457. for the wealth,

  458. and status,

  459. that had been promised.

  460. These false teachers,

  461. that we're talking about today,

  462. they too are experts,

  463. in greed.

  464. They're an accursed brood,

  465. who love the wages,

  466. or the pleasure,

  467. of wickedness.

  468. Do we,

  469. let the pursuit of money,

  470. drive us blindly,

  471. into compromising situations?

  472. Do we,

  473. perk up our ears,

  474. and smile,

  475. when we hear things like,

  476. if you follow Jesus,

  477. he will bless you,

  478. and make you happy,

  479. and rich?

  480. This is how,

  481. false teachers operate.

  482. They lure us in,

  483. by appealing,

  484. to our innermost desires,

  485. and making them,

  486. seem good.

  487. So,

  488. having looked at,

  489. some of the ways,

  490. to identify,

  491. a false teacher,

  492. by their lifestyle,

  493. or their behaviour,

  494. let's now take a look,

  495. at their message,

  496. or their boasting.

  497. What do they say,

  498. about what they believe?

  499. What is their message?

  500. Verse 17,

  501. if you,

  502. if you would follow.

  503. These men,

  504. are springs without water,

  505. and mists,

  506. driven by a storm.

  507. Blackest darkness,

  508. is reserved for them.

  509. They promise,

  510. lots of attractive,

  511. and satisfying things,

  512. like lovely,

  513. cool springs of water,

  514. which really is a treat,

  515. when you're travelling,

  516. in the hot,

  517. Turkey area,

  518. as the readers,

  519. of this letter were.

  520. Verse 18,

  521. for they mouth,

  522. empty,

  523. boastful words,

  524. and,

  525. by appealing,

  526. to the lustful desires,

  527. of sinful human nature,

  528. they entice people,

  529. who are just escaping,

  530. from those,

  531. who live in error.

  532. They promise them,

  533. freedom,

  534. from moral restraint,

  535. telling them,

  536. that because,

  537. they have been saved,

  538. they can now,

  539. do whatever they want,

  540. because they're saved,

  541. by grace.

  542. God is a loving,

  543. and a forgiving God,

  544. so all you need to do,

  545. is say sorry,

  546. after a slip up,

  547. and then just,

  548. carry on as before,

  549. doing what you want.

  550. They speak,

  551. impressive words,

  552. enticing new believers,

  553. away from their,

  554. unbelieving friends,

  555. appealing to their,

  556. lustful desires,

  557. as they do this.

  558. You're going to have,

  559. to use your imagination,

  560. we're going to take,

  561. a walk down,

  562. at main street,

  563. and I do apologise,

  564. in advance,

  565. for my,

  566. very poor attempt,

  567. at street talk.

  568. So imagine this,

  569. you're walking down the street,

  570. as a new believer,

  571. a guy comes up to you,

  572. and says,

  573. hey dude,

  574. you're looking,

  575. particularly,

  576. smiley,

  577. and slick today,

  578. what has you,

  579. grooving like that?

  580. You innocently say,

  581. what's not to be happy about?

  582. Last week,

  583. at a camp,

  584. I heard the good news,

  585. about Jesus,

  586. opened up for me,

  587. and explained clearly,

  588. in response,

  589. logically,

  590. I submitted my life,

  591. hopes and plans,

  592. to him,

  593. as my Lord,

  594. and my saviour,

  595. trusting in what he did,

  596. on the cross,

  597. to make me right,

  598. with God.

  599. Not by anything,

  600. I have done,

  601. or might do in the future,

  602. but what Jesus,

  603. has done on the cross,

  604. for me.

  605. Now,

  606. because of that,

  607. I'm confident,

  608. that I have life,

  609. in its fullness,

  610. now and forever,

  611. because he has forgiven me,

  612. and he loves me.

  613. Oh cool,

  614. I'm a Christian too dude.

  615. Hey,

  616. you should come to my church,

  617. it's so cool and trendy.

  618. All the young people go there,

  619. I'm the worship leader.

  620. Hey,

  621. I see you've got calluses,

  622. on your digits,

  623. so you obviously,

  624. play the guitar.

  625. So I'm sure,

  626. there'll be space,

  627. for you in the band.

  628. We is hip to the hop.

  629. And a person like you,

  630. could definitely,

  631. find a lady there.

  632. That sounds interesting,

  633. but what's the teaching like?

  634. Do you,

  635. do people,

  636. look out for each other,

  637. like a family?

  638. Is the life of the church,

  639. based on Jesus' teaching?

  640. His life,

  641. his death,

  642. his resurrection?

  643. Is the Bible central,

  644. to all that you do,

  645. and say?

  646. Are you excited,

  647. about reaching out,

  648. in the community,

  649. to see those who are lost,

  650. reached by the good news?

  651. Oh dude,

  652. the teaching is awesome.

  653. We just sit around,

  654. and like,

  655. love Jesus.

  656. Jesus.

  657. Our church,

  658. our church,

  659. spins,

  660. on spiritual freedom.

  661. It's what the Bible's,

  662. all about.

  663. We just want to be happy,

  664. and make each other happy,

  665. chillaxed,

  666. in our spirituality.

  667. We don't have any,

  668. stodgy rules,

  669. or structure.

  670. The Christian life,

  671. is so liberating,

  672. and all because,

  673. our BFF,

  674. our best friend forever,

  675. JC,

  676. died,

  677. so we can be forgiven,

  678. and go to heaven.

  679. It's what grace is all about.

  680. We are confident,

  681. of forgiveness,

  682. so live in freedom,

  683. and do what we want,

  684. with whoever we want.

  685. It's an awesome church.

  686. Okay,

  687. that sounds,

  688. pretty good,

  689. I think.

  690. I'm just going to go away,

  691. and think about that,

  692. and maybe come along,

  693. next Sunday.

  694. The speaker at camp,

  695. last week,

  696. was actually talking,

  697. about something,

  698. in 2nd Peter,

  699. and I just want,

  700. to check something out,

  701. first,

  702. that doesn't,

  703. quite sit right,

  704. with me.

  705. Being in a church family,

  706. is kind of important,

  707. to me,

  708. so I want to make sure,

  709. that what you have,

  710. is what I need,

  711. and what is good,

  712. and what is right.

  713. Totally mate,

  714. and don't forget,

  715. if you come along,

  716. look out for me,

  717. you can't miss me,

  718. I'll be up the front,

  719. plucking the strings,

  720. and I'll get you hooked up,

  721. with some of our singles.

  722. Ooh, ooh, ooh,

  723. before you go,

  724. have you heard of a writer,

  725. called Christopher Ash?

  726. He says in his book,

  727. Bible Delight,

  728. that the prosperity gospel,

  729. claims,

  730. if you become a Christian,

  731. God wants to bless you,

  732. and therefore,

  733. your bank statement,

  734. will become fatter,

  735. your house,

  736. will get better,

  737. bigger,

  738. your car,

  739. will get faster,

  740. your wife,

  741. if you have one,

  742. will get prettier,

  743. your husband,

  744. if you have one,

  745. will get more handsome,

  746. your children,

  747. if you have them,

  748. will get cleverer,

  749. and your health,

  750. will get better.

  751. End of quote.

  752. So,

  753. come along,

  754. come along,

  755. and all will be well with you.

  756. You'll prosper.

  757. Come to us.

  758. End of street talk.

  759. Well,

  760. maybe that's the kind of church

  761. you're looking for.

  762. Maybe it's worth a shot.

  763. Maybe that's why you're here this morning,

  764. checking us out.

  765. I hope not.

  766. It stinks.

  767. of two of the main issues

  768. in our churches today

  769. in Ireland.

  770. Liberal theology,

  771. where everything or anything goes,

  772. and the prosperity gospel,

  773. which claims that the Christian life

  774. is meant to be easy,

  775. plain sailing,

  776. and full of blessings.

  777. Yes, there are blessings,

  778. but that's not

  779. what the Christian life is about.

  780. Let's go back

  781. to God's word.

  782. Verse 17.

  783. These men are springs

  784. without water

  785. and mists

  786. driven by a storm.

  787. Blackest darkness

  788. is reserved for them.

  789. The promises

  790. that this

  791. dude

  792. was on about

  793. are just like

  794. the springs.

  795. Dry.

  796. These men

  797. are like springs

  798. without water

  799. and mists

  800. driven by a storm.

  801. they promise

  802. satisfaction

  803. and success

  804. and completely

  805. disappoint.

  806. They are flitting

  807. here and there

  808. like a little pocket

  809. of mist

  810. caught in a storm

  811. blown all over the place.

  812. They have no grounding.

  813. They have nothing

  814. to offer

  815. other than

  816. empty words

  817. which sound attractive

  818. but crumble

  819. when tested.

  820. They have no authority

  821. to promise us

  822. anything,

  823. let alone guarantee

  824. us wealth,

  825. success,

  826. or satisfaction.

  827. They are dry.

  828. Verse 19.

  829. They promise

  830. freedom

  831. while they

  832. themselves

  833. are slaves

  834. of depravity

  835. for a man

  836. is a slave

  837. to whatever

  838. has mastered him.

  839. They promise

  840. freedom

  841. but their promises

  842. are baseless

  843. because they

  844. themselves

  845. are slaves

  846. of depravity.

  847. Other translations

  848. say that they

  849. are slaves

  850. to sin

  851. and to corruption.

  852. They are slaves

  853. to whatever

  854. has mastered them.

  855. And we've already

  856. learned

  857. what does

  858. master them.

  859. Insolence

  860. speaking evil

  861. of what they

  862. don't understand.

  863. Licentiousness

  864. lacking any

  865. personal restraint

  866. and ignoring

  867. societal standards.

  868. Immorality

  869. eyes full of lust

  870. and greed

  871. ruled by money

  872. and personal gain.

  873. They have nothing

  874. to offer us.

  875. Compare that

  876. with the precious

  877. promises

  878. we were reminded

  879. of in chapter 1

  880. verse 3

  881. when Simon

  882. was speaking.

  883. It says

  884. his divine power

  885. has given us

  886. everything

  887. we need

  888. for life

  889. and godliness.

  890. How?

  891. Is it through

  892. this bogus

  893. hipster church

  894. we've been offered?

  895. No.

  896. Read on.

  897. What does it say?

  898. Through our knowledge

  899. of him

  900. who called us

  901. by his own

  902. glory

  903. and goodness.

  904. That's a promise

  905. which is well

  906. grounded in

  907. biblical truth.

  908. Not in the

  909. baseless lies

  910. which can be

  911. offered by the

  912. latest fad.

  913. We have

  914. everything we

  915. need

  916. for life

  917. and for

  918. godliness.

  919. He alone

  920. is sufficient

  921. for us.

  922. Not

  923. God

  924. plus something

  925. else

  926. but God

  927. alone

  928. is sufficient.

  929. How?

  930. By our

  931. knowing him

  932. who called

  933. us

  934. by his

  935. own glory

  936. and goodness.

  937. If the

  938. lifestyle

  939. and the

  940. message

  941. of these

  942. teachers

  943. is false

  944. then they

  945. are living

  946. and talking

  947. contrary to

  948. the bible

  949. and its

  950. truth

  951. about that

  952. same

  953. sufficiency

  954. of Christ.

  955. Therefore

  956. the consequences

  957. are clear

  958. and dire.

  959. Judgment

  960. will come

  961. on them

  962. and separation

  963. from God

  964. is guaranteed.

  965. It is one

  966. thing to turn

  967. your back

  968. on Christ

  969. but it's

  970. another one

  971. altogether

  972. to lead

  973. others

  974. astray.

  975. To lead

  976. others

  977. away from

  978. him.

  979. Look at

  980. verse 12

  981. again

  982. they too

  983. will perish

  984. they will

  985. be paid

  986. back

  987. with harm

  988. for the

  989. harm

  990. they have

  991. done.

  992. Verse 17

  993. warns us

  994. further

  995. blackest

  996. darkness

  997. is reserved

  998. for them.

  999. The second

  1000. half of

  1001. verse 20

  1002. again

  1003. they are

  1004. worse off

  1005. at the

  1006. end

  1007. than they

  1008. were at

  1009. the

  1010. beginning.

  1011. Last week

  1012. we looked

  1013. at the

  1014. first part

  1015. of this

  1016. chapter.

  1017. The

  1018. warning

  1019. was that

  1020. the path

  1021. of the

  1022. false

  1023. teachers

  1024. leads

  1025. to

  1026. destruction.

  1027. There is

  1028. no sugar

  1029. coating

  1030. this

  1031. truth

  1032. I'm

  1033. afraid.

  1034. False

  1035. teachers

  1036. will be

  1037. destroyed.

  1038. Has

  1039. anyone

  1040. noticed

  1041. the

  1042. elephant

  1043. in the

  1044. room?

  1045. Well let's

  1046. read verses

  1047. 20 to

  1048. 22.

  1049. If they

  1050. have

  1051. escaped

  1052. the

  1053. corruption

  1054. of the

  1055. world

  1056. by knowing

  1057. our

  1058. Lord

  1059. and our

  1060. Saviour

  1061. Jesus

  1062. Christ

  1063. and are

  1064. again

  1065. entangled

  1066. in it

  1067. and overcome

  1068. they are

  1069. worse off

  1070. at the

  1071. end

  1072. than they

  1073. were at

  1074. the

  1075. beginning.

  1076. It would

  1077. have been

  1078. better for

  1079. them

  1080. not to

  1081. have

  1082. known

  1083. the

  1084. way

  1085. of

  1086. righteousness

  1087. than

  1088. to

  1089. have

  1090. known

  1091. it

  1092. and

  1093. then

  1094. to

  1095. turn

  1096. their

  1097. backs

  1098. on

  1099. the

  1100. sacred

  1101. command

  1102. that

  1103. was

  1104. passed

  1105. on

  1106. to

  1107. them.

  1108. Of

  1109. them

  1110. the

  1111. proverbs

  1112. are

  1113. true.

  1114. A

  1115. dog

  1116. returns

  1117. to

  1118. its

  1119. vomit

  1120. and

  1121. a

  1122. sow

  1123. that

  1124. is

  1125. washed

  1126. goes

  1127. back

  1128. to

  1129. her

  1130. wallowing

  1131. in

  1132. the

  1133. mud.

  1134. It

  1135. is a

  1136. reasonable

  1137. question

  1138. to ask

  1139. if these

  1140. false

  1141. teachers

  1142. were

  1143. in fact

  1144. saved

  1145. before

  1146. they

  1147. started

  1148. to

  1149. entice

  1150. others

  1151. away

  1152. from

  1153. the

  1154. truth.

  1155. It

  1156. says

  1157. that

  1158. they

  1159. would

  1160. have

  1161. been

  1162. better

  1163. not

  1164. to

  1165. have

  1166. known

  1167. the

  1168. way

  1169. of

  1170. righteousness

  1171. than

  1172. to

  1173. have

  1174. known

  1175. it

  1176. and

  1177. then

  1178. turn

  1179. their

  1180. backs

  1181. on

  1182. it.

  1183. This

  1184. is a

  1185. big

  1186. question.

  1187. Is it

  1188. possible

  1189. to

  1190. lose

  1191. your

  1192. salvation?

  1193. It's a

  1194. question that

  1195. has had

  1196. many books

  1197. and probably

  1198. libraries

  1199. written

  1200. about it.

  1201. So to

  1202. throw it

  1203. in just

  1204. towards the

  1205. end of

  1206. this talk

  1207. is a

  1208. little bit

  1209. unfair but

  1210. I can't

  1211. ignore it

  1212. completely.

  1213. The elephant

  1214. needs to be

  1215. dealt with.

  1216. So I'll

  1217. try and

  1218. shed a

  1219. small bit

  1220. of light

  1221. on that

  1222. question

  1223. by referring

  1224. to a

  1225. pastor

  1226. and an

  1227. author

  1228. named

  1229. John

  1230. Piper

  1231. who says

  1232. very well

  1233. that Peter

  1234. explains to

  1235. us in a

  1236. proverb

  1237. that we

  1238. shouldn't be

  1239. surprised at

  1240. dogs

  1241. characteristically

  1242. return to

  1243. their vomit

  1244. and no

  1245. matter how

  1246. clean you

  1247. make a

  1248. pig on

  1249. the outside

  1250. if it

  1251. is still

  1252. a pig

  1253. it will

  1254. return to

  1255. the muck

  1256. or the

  1257. mire.

  1258. In other

  1259. words those

  1260. who leave

  1261. the way

  1262. of righteousness

  1263. never to

  1264. return

  1265. simply show

  1266. that their

  1267. inner nature

  1268. had never

  1269. been changed.

  1270. That's the

  1271. end of the

  1272. quote.

  1273. So it

  1274. seems to

  1275. me that

  1276. what Mr.

  1277. Piper,

  1278. John,

  1279. is saying

  1280. is that

  1281. true faith

  1282. in Jesus

  1283. changes us

  1284. inwardly.

  1285. Our very

  1286. nature

  1287. has been

  1288. altered

  1289. so that

  1290. we cannot

  1291. return to

  1292. our old

  1293. way of

  1294. life.

  1295. Yes,

  1296. we may

  1297. slip up

  1298. but we

  1299. return to

  1300. the cross

  1301. in confession

  1302. with gratitude

  1303. as we'll be

  1304. doing later

  1305. as we meet

  1306. around the

  1307. Lord's

  1308. table.

  1309. How do I

  1310. know that

  1311. I'm not a

  1312. false teacher?

  1313. How do you

  1314. know that

  1315. you're not?

  1316. Because it

  1317. all sounds

  1318. scary when we

  1319. start looking

  1320. at ourselves

  1321. especially

  1322. when I

  1323. look at

  1324. my lifestyle

  1325. and my

  1326. message.

  1327. If I look

  1328. deep enough

  1329. into my

  1330. own life

  1331. I can

  1332. easily find

  1333. things that

  1334. just don't

  1335. add up.

  1336. Sometimes

  1337. I feel like

  1338. I'm doing

  1339. okay.

  1340. That my

  1341. lifestyle

  1342. speaks clearly

  1343. of my faith

  1344. and my

  1345. dependence on

  1346. Jesus.

  1347. I get

  1348. good times

  1349. with him.

  1350. I'm putting

  1351. him first

  1352. in my

  1353. decisions.

  1354. I'm having

  1355. good times

  1356. of prayer

  1357. and chat

  1358. with him.

  1359. I'm getting

  1360. to church

  1361. home group.

  1362. I'm wanting

  1363. to see

  1364. Jesus made

  1365. famous by

  1366. how I

  1367. live and

  1368. how I

  1369. act.

  1370. But then

  1371. one little

  1372. slip up.

  1373. I go

  1374. away for

  1375. the weekend.

  1376. I break

  1377. my routine

  1378. and before

  1379. I know

  1380. it I've

  1381. ignored God

  1382. for two

  1383. weeks,

  1384. a month,

  1385. half a

  1386. year.

  1387. I feel

  1388. like I

  1389. had been

  1390. a nice

  1391. clean pig

  1392. but now I've

  1393. just returned

  1394. to the muck

  1395. and I'm back

  1396. to square one

  1397. again.

  1398. Dirty

  1399. and very

  1400. piggy.

  1401. it.

  1402. So maybe

  1403. I'm not

  1404. saved after

  1405. all.

  1406. And all

  1407. that punishment,

  1408. destruction and

  1409. harm is

  1410. waiting for

  1411. me too.

  1412. And maybe

  1413. this is the

  1414. same for

  1415. some of you

  1416. today and

  1417. you think

  1418. that you

  1419. have no

  1420. hope.

  1421. And now

  1422. we're all

  1423. feeling slightly

  1424. vulnerable and

  1425. squirmish in

  1426. our seats,

  1427. aren't we?

  1428. Our lifestyle

  1429. just doesn't

  1430. add up

  1431. sometimes to

  1432. what we say

  1433. our message

  1434. is.

  1435. So how

  1436. can we be

  1437. sure that we

  1438. are not false

  1439. teachers?

  1440. Well what is

  1441. it we are

  1442. teaching?

  1443. What is our

  1444. message?

  1445. Let's look

  1446. back at

  1447. chapter 1

  1448. verse 3.

  1449. His divine

  1450. power has

  1451. given us

  1452. everything we

  1453. need for

  1454. life and

  1455. godliness

  1456. through our

  1457. knowledge of

  1458. him who

  1459. called us

  1460. by his

  1461. own glory

  1462. and goodness.

  1463. So if

  1464. that's not

  1465. our message

  1466. we're off

  1467. the mark.

  1468. If we are

  1469. not saying

  1470. that Jesus

  1471. is enough

  1472. that he

  1473. has given

  1474. us all

  1475. we need

  1476. that he

  1477. is sufficient

  1478. if we are

  1479. saying that

  1480. we are

  1481. saved by

  1482. grace but

  1483. then we

  1484. continue to

  1485. live lacking

  1486. any personal

  1487. restraint or

  1488. humility

  1489. we have both

  1490. our lifestyle

  1491. and our

  1492. message out

  1493. of kilter

  1494. with the

  1495. message that

  1496. God has

  1497. given us

  1498. all we

  1499. need.

  1500. What are we

  1501. to do

  1502. with false

  1503. teachers or

  1504. false

  1505. teaching?

  1506. We cut

  1507. out and

  1508. remove the

  1509. problem.

  1510. Like the

  1511. bindweed in

  1512. our garden

  1513. we need to

  1514. constantly be

  1515. rooting it

  1516. out at the

  1517. first sign.

  1518. Now I'm

  1519. not suggesting

  1520. we go around

  1521. with a

  1522. knapsack

  1523. sprayer and

  1524. we start

  1525. dousing all

  1526. these false

  1527. teachers with

  1528. weed killer or

  1529. we start attacking

  1530. them with a

  1531. hoe but what

  1532. we do is not

  1533. let them get

  1534. a grip in

  1535. our church or

  1536. in our

  1537. thinking.

  1538. We need to

  1539. be looking

  1540. out for it

  1541. in our

  1542. teachers, in

  1543. our homes and

  1544. in our own

  1545. lives.

  1546. We need to

  1547. hold them to

  1548. account,

  1549. questioning them

  1550. and what they

  1551. say.

  1552. We measure

  1553. every fine

  1554. sounding argument

  1555. against the

  1556. truth of

  1557. scripture.

  1558. We check

  1559. what the

  1560. teacher teaches

  1561. and how he

  1562. or she

  1563. lives.

  1564. In our own

  1565. lives we need

  1566. to be immersing

  1567. ourselves in

  1568. the truths of

  1569. scripture so

  1570. we will

  1571. recognize false

  1572. teaching.

  1573. Chapter 1

  1574. verses 5 to

  1575. 8 say

  1576. make every

  1577. effort to add

  1578. to your faith

  1579. goodness and

  1580. to goodness

  1581. knowledge,

  1582. to knowledge

  1583. self-control,

  1584. to self-control

  1585. perseverance and

  1586. to perseverance

  1587. godliness and

  1588. to godliness

  1589. brotherly

  1590. kindness and

  1591. to brotherly

  1592. kindness and

  1593. love.

  1594. For if you

  1595. possess these

  1596. qualities in

  1597. increasing measure

  1598. they will keep

  1599. you from being

  1600. ineffective and

  1601. unproductive in

  1602. your knowledge of

  1603. our Lord Jesus

  1604. Christ.

  1605. And if we skip

  1606. ahead to verse

  1607. 10 it says

  1608. be all the more

  1609. eager to make

  1610. your calling and

  1611. election sure.

  1612. For if you do

  1613. these things you

  1614. will never fall

  1615. and you will

  1616. receive a rich

  1617. welcome into the

  1618. eternal kingdom of

  1619. our Lord and

  1620. Saviour Jesus

  1621. Christ.

  1622. We need our

  1623. lifestyle and our

  1624. message to be

  1625. mastered by the

  1626. Lord Jesus

  1627. putting to death

  1628. sin and

  1629. untruth,

  1630. living with an

  1631. attitude of

  1632. gratitude and

  1633. confession.

  1634. confession.

  1635. Let's pray.

  1636. Heavenly Father

  1637. thank you for

  1638. your word.

  1639. Thank you for the

  1640. scriptures.

  1641. Thank you for the

  1642. teachers that we

  1643. have here in this

  1644. church.

  1645. Thank you for the

  1646. truths that we have

  1647. heard over the

  1648. years and have

  1649. brought us to a

  1650. point of

  1651. repentance,

  1652. confession and

  1653. thanksgiving.

  1654. thank you that

  1655. your scripture,

  1656. your word is

  1657. true.

  1658. It's been tested

  1659. and it's

  1660. trustworthy.

  1661. And Lord

  1662. please after what

  1663. we've read this

  1664. morning help us

  1665. in our lives to

  1666. be discerning,

  1667. to discern the

  1668. truth from the

  1669. lies that we

  1670. hear around us.

  1671. Please help us

  1672. in this church

  1673. to rise up

  1674. good teachers

  1675. of the word.

  1676. That we will

  1677. bring the

  1678. truth of

  1679. scripture into

  1680. the places that

  1681. we go in our

  1682. work, in our

  1683. home, as we

  1684. meet together

  1685. here, as our

  1686. kids are taught

  1687. upstairs in

  1688. Sunday school.

  1689. Help us to be

  1690. raising up people

  1691. who can use

  1692. your word well,

  1693. that can discern

  1694. the truth from

  1695. the lies.

  1696. God's

  1697. grace.

  1698. And thank you

  1699. for Jesus,

  1700. that he has

  1701. made all this

  1702. possible, that he

  1703. has given us all

  1704. that we need for

  1705. life and godliness,

  1706. all because of

1707. what he did for us

  1708. on the cross,

  1709. coming so that we

  1710. can have forgiveness,

  1711. that we can be

  1712. raised to life

  1713. anew by trusting

  1714. in him and what

  1715. he has done on

  1716. the cross.

  1717. And we pray

  1718. this all in

  1719. Jesus' name.

  1720. Amen.

  1721. Thanks, Ian.
