  1. So thank you very much for having me.

  2. I'm going to just lower this a small bit.

  3. If you want to turn your way to the 2 Peter, where you've been walking through this summer.

  4. I'm going to start my timer here as well.

  5. 2 Peter chapter 3.

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  6. And we'll be looking at verses 11 to 16 in particular.

  7. So 2 Peter, before we read, 2 Peter is a letter.

  8. And so I think instead of just jumping into a text and reading it in isolation to the rest of the letter.

  9. I think it's better for us to just remember that it is a letter.

  10. And that we should take a running jump at it.

  11. Don't just fly into the text and try to have a bit of context.

  12. So what I did is I read and listened to 2 Peter and 1 Peter over and over again.

  13. To try and get just a feeling and to just really have in my mind exactly what Peter is trying to say to his people.

  14. Peter is at the end of his life and he is writing to them and he is exhorting them.

  15. And so I'd like to just read out kind of a sketch of 1 and 2 Peter.

  16. Just to give us a bit more context so that as we get into the verses we have that running jump to it.

  17. So the Apostle Peter is calling believers to remain faithful to the end.

  18. He says you've been born again to a living hope, a salvation into which angels long to look.

  19. So don't be surprised at trials.

  20. Be holy.

  21. You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession.

  22. That you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

  23. For the Lord's sake submit to every institution.

  24. Endure sorrow of unjust suffering and trust the Lord.

  25. Husbands and wives live as God has called you to.

  26. All the time that is passed is sufficient for doing what the Gentiles want to do.

  27. The end of all things is at hand.

  28. Therefore be self-controlled and sober minded for the sake of your prayers.

  29. Again, don't be surprised when persecution comes.

  30. This is to be accepted.

  31. And remember Jesus.

  32. Entrust yourself to a faithful creator just like he did.

  33. Elders, shepherd God's flock well with a right heart.

  34. Everyone, be humble.

  35. You have an enemy.

  36. He is a vicious lion, but resist him and he will flee from you.

  37. Hold fast.

  38. God will restore you.

  39. He will confirm you.

  40. He will strengthen you and establish you.

  41. And in second Peter, brothers and sisters, his divine power is granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness.

  42. In other words, you have all that you need for the Christian life.

  43. Therefore, make every effort to grow in Christlikeness.

  44. If you're not growing, you've lost sight of the fact that you've been cleansed from your sins.

  45. And as long as I, Peter, am alive, I'll keep reminding you about these things.

  46. This isn't a man-made myth.

  47. I've seen Christ transfigured on the mount.

  48. So believe me, this is God's word, not an invention of man.

  49. False teachers will come among you as they always have.

  50. They are condemned, but God knows how to rescue his own people and keep the unrighteous under punishment.

  51. These false teachers promise you freedom, but they themselves are slaves to corruption.

  52. They'd be better off if they had never known the truth than that they knew it and turned from it.

  53. They'll laugh at the idea of a promised judgment day.

  54. But God's word is true, just as he called creation into being by his word, so he will call creation to an end by his word.

  55. The day of the Lord is coming.

  56. The day of the Lord is coming.

  57. Like a thief in the night, as Jesus said, the day of the Lord is coming.

  58. And so as we come to verse 11 to 16 of chapter 3, have that in your mind that Peter has been calling, exhorting, reminding us of who we are, what is coming.

  59. The false teachers will come among us, that we have all that we need.

  60. And so let's begin reading in verses 11 with this in mind.

  61. Let's start first in verse 10, I think.

  62. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

  63. He's borrowing Jesus' language from Matthew 24.

  64. And then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

  65. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people you ought to be in lies of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God.

  66. Because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn.

  67. But according to his promise, we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

  68. Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.

  69. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our brother Paul also wrote to you, according to the wisdom given him.

  70. As he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters.

  71. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures.

  72. Now, I'd like to start off with, as I was thinking through this, I'd like to start off with just saying that I was convicted when I read 2 Peter and 1 Peter.

  73. And maybe you will be too, maybe you have been as you've gone through this summer.

  74. I was convicted of the fact that I rarely give thought to the second coming of Christ.

  75. I don't know, maybe I'm alone in that.

  76. I do read the Word of God, and I love the Lord, but I've noticed that for the last, for months, I could go months, I'd say, without having thought of the fact that Jesus could come back tomorrow.

  77. And it's something that when you think of it, you go, how could I have forgotten something so clear, something that Jesus promised he would do?

  78. And it should be something that I think about often.

  79. I mean, we talk a lot about how Jesus intervened the first time when he became a man.

  80. And Jesus, who in the form of God did not account equality with God, something to be grasped, but he emptied himself by taking the form of being born in the likeness of man and being found in human form.

  81. He humbled himself by becoming obedient, even to the point of death on a cross.

  82. And we should speak about this.

  83. We speak about how Jesus became a man and how he rose again.

  84. But I have noticed, at least in my own life, that I've failed to consider and to hasten the second coming of Christ.

  85. I just realized I've just not been doing it.

  86. Maybe I don't want to be coming across as some sort of apocalyptic nutter, someone who has a sign in their garage, you know, the end is nigh.

  87. And although that is not the gospel, it's not the gospel to go out and show a sign that says the end is nigh.

  88. Because that's not necessarily, specifically Christian.

  89. That is part of the Christian message.

  90. And so I don't want to be a weirdo who only talks about the end times.

  91. But then I don't want to be someone who ignores that part of scripture that calls us.

  92. And so I had to repent of it.

  93. But I want to ask you this morning, try something for me.

  94. Just picture Main Street down in Carragalline.

  95. I was thinking of Balancholic where I live, but I also know Carragalline as well.

  96. I want you to think of Main Street down in Carragalline.

  97. You can see the Carragalline Court Hotel, there's the Catholic Church, there's the Super Valley, there's a little bridge, there's the hill.

  98. And I want you to ask yourself this question.

  99. Do you believe that one day all this will be gone?

  100. Do you believe that?

  101. Do you believe that one day Carragalline will not exist?

  102. That it will be broken down and that there will no longer be that place?

  103. That the house I live in right now won't be there.

  104. There will be a new heavens and new earth.

  105. Now think about that.

  106. Do you really believe that?

  107. That's a big thing to believe.

  108. But I want you to let the weight of that just rest on you.

  109. Jesus has promised he will return to judge the living and the dead.

  110. The universe as we know will pass away.

  111. The towns we live in, the jobs that we work, the houses we live in, there will be no more.

  112. Yet all men will be brought before the judgment seat of Christ.

  113. There will be a new heavens and a new earth.

  114. Some believe that the present universe will be destroyed ultimately.

  115. In other words, that God will destroy the universe and that he'll make a new one from scratch.

  116. While others still hold that it'll be melted down and sort of reduced to its original elements and then built back up.

  117. And I think that that second interpretation is more in line if you look at Romans 8 where Paul says,

  118. And so you see in verse 12,

  119. And you know, I was trying to picture that.

  120. I was like, what?

  121. You know, if I was a director in a film, how would I direct the heavens being set on fire and dissolved and the heavenly bodies melt as they burn?

  122. And what can we point towards?

  123. I'm sure we could hire some really skilled CGI guy to do it.

  124. But the whole idea is that it's humbling and it's scary.

  125. And that only God can do that.

  126. Men can burn down buildings, but we can't burn creation.

  127. And so moving on, I suppose the main thrust of what I want to look at this morning is that in light of this,

  128. in light of the surety of Christ's return,

  129. we should be godly.

  130. It's simply the message.

  131. There's no need to make it somewhat complicated than it is.

  132. But while we wait for Christ, we should try and be more and more like Christ by the power of his spirit.

  133. And so what I'd like us to do is look,

  134. I suppose you could look at, if you want to call it, the verbs that are in these verses.

  135. What does this look like?

  136. Godliness is something that we all as Christians hope to attain to and hope to grow in.

  137. It's not a place you arrive at and go, I'm no godly.

  138. But rather it's a matter of degrees where we come from one measure of glory to the other, more like Christ.

  139. But have a look in verse 12.

  140. So I'm going to look at waiting, how we can wait in godliness, how we can hasten in holiness,

  141. being diligent and counting God's patience as salvation.

  142. So four things.

  143. So the first one being waiting.

  144. Look at verse 12.

  145. So in verse 12 it says,

  146. Waiting for and hasten the coming of the day of God.

  147. We should be waiting for Christ's return.

  148. Waiting is always forward looking.

  149. So if you see someone sitting on the side of the street and you ask them, you know, what are you doing?

  150. And he goes, I'm waiting.

  151. You wouldn't go, okay.

  152. You'd say, well, what are you waiting for?

  153. Waiting always has, it might sound obvious to stay,

  154. but waiting always is something that's in the future that you're waiting for.

  155. It has an object.

  156. And so our waiting is for the return of Christ.

  157. And how do we do that?

  158. It's not a passive waiting.

  159. So if you'd move on just two words later in the verse,

  160. it says that we're hastening the return of Christ.

  161. We don't passively wait.

  162. It's not just to sit there and, you know, like you're waiting for a bus.

  163. You can sit and wait for a bus.

  164. You don't have to do anything.

  165. You don't have to hope the bus arrives alone.

  166. In Ireland you're going to have to do.

  167. But hastening, we don't passively wait.

  168. We actively wait.

  169. And to hasten means to earnestly desire it,

  170. to hurry it along, so to speak.

  171. So how do we do that?

  172. How do we hasten the day of the Lord?

  173. Again, I think it's a pretty straightforward answer,

  174. but when we do all that we can to help accomplish the Great Commission,

  175. we are hastening the Lord's return.

  176. And we should pray to that end.

  177. Look at the end of Revelation.

  178. He who testifies to these things says,

  179. Surely I am coming soon.

  180. Amen.

  181. Come, Lord Jesus.

  182. We should pray that Christ would return.

  183. And we should pray knowing that he will not return

  184. until the gospel has gone forth to all nations.

  185. He will not return to the gospel,

  186. which came through the whole world as a testimony to all nations,

  187. as Jesus said in Matthew 24.

  188. Therefore, we should pray.

  189. On a practical level, look in the news today.

  190. You should pray for Egypt.

  191. There is a power struggle.

  192. And we know from the word of God

  193. that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood,

  194. but against the powers of darkness.

  195. And we know that what's going on there

  196. in that country right now

  197. has implications for the rest of the Middle East.

  198. And someone's going to land up with more power than somebody else.

  199. The dust will settle,

  200. and someone will have power.

  201. And we should be praying,

  202. Lord, whoever it is,

  203. we know that the heart of the king

  204. is like a stream in your hands.

  205. Whoever it is who has power in Egypt

  206. in two years' time or three years' time

  207. when there's stability,

  208. would you please, Lord,

  209. make sure that that person

  210. allows for greater freedom for Christians.

  211. That's how we should be praying.

  212. Look at the news.

  213. Take that as your prayer points.

  214. Think globally and pray

  215. that the Great Commission would be carried out.

  216. And think locally as well.

  217. Am I sharing the gospel with my friends?

  218. Am I using every opportunity

  219. and making the best use of the time?

  220. Because the days are evil.

  221. Verse 14.

  222. We go to verse 14.

  223. Therefore, beloved,

  224. since you are waiting for these,

  225. be diligent to be found in him

  226. without spot or blemish,

  227. and at peace.

  228. I think that peace they're referring to,

  229. you know, think of Romans,

  230. therefore having been justified by faith.

  231. We have peace with God.

  232. Peace.

  233. You don't have to be worrying

  234. is God going to destroy you as a Christian

  235. because his wrath is gone.

  236. There's not any wrath left for any Christian.

  237. God didn't get rid of 90% of it on the cross

  238. for his people.

  239. He got rid of 100% of his wrath.

  240. There is no condemnation for those who are in Jesus Christ.

  241. We have peace.

  242. And we should seek to live in peace with all people.

  243. But I want us to focus here

  244. on the words being diligent

  245. and without spot or blemish.

  246. And the word diligence here

  247. is the same word that Peter used back

  248. at the start of chapter 1

  249. when Simon was speaking a few weeks ago

  250. on this passage.

  251. He said when he entreats us

  252. to make every effort

  253. to make our calling and election sure.

  254. So he's at the end of his letter now

  255. he's just reminding you

  256. keep going,

  257. make every effort,

  258. be diligent to grow.

  259. It's also the same one he uses in 115

  260. where he says,

  261. you know,

  262. I'll make every effort

  263. to remind you of these things.

  264. I'm going to be diligent

  265. to remind you

  266. to be diligent.

  267. So,

  268. it's a striving,

  269. it's a daily effort

  270. and to be found in him

  271. without spot or blemishes.

  272. Now I was thinking about that,

  273. I was like,

  274. why did he use that kind of language?

  275. I mean,

  276. it's kind of in stark contrast

  277. to what he used in chapter 2.

  278. He says we shouldn't have spots or blemishes

  279. and he actually describes false teachers

  280. as blemishes and stains.

  281. Not that they have stains or blemishes,

  282. they are blemishes.

  283. But I was wondering,

  284. Peter doesn't point out

  285. big inconsistencies

  286. but rather small things,

  287. spots and blemishes.

  288. You know,

  289. if I took you outside,

  290. we drive a silver polo,

  291. it's about 14 years old.

  292. If I took you outside

  293. and I showed you

  294. the bodywork of our car,

  295. it's got dents and scratches.

  296. It's not spring chicken

  297. and it's got a few dents

  298. and a few bumps in it.

  299. Thankfully,

  300. there are no missing doors

  301. or windows.

  302. And that's really handy.

  303. So it's roadworthy.

  304. Now when it comes to cars,

  305. that's fine.

  306. You don't even need a car

  307. to be absolutely perfect

  308. and without blemish or spot.

  309. But as Christians,

  310. I think we can be too easily

  311. fooled into thinking

  312. that godliness is just about

  313. dealing with the missing cars

  314. and windows.

  315. And we just glaze over so easily

  316. the little dents

  317. and the small spots of blemishes.

  318. You know,

  319. I suppose in my thinking,

  320. I kind of think,

  321. as long as I don't crash

  322. with big sins,

  323. then that'll be fine.

  324. But really godliness,

  325. something very helpful

  326. which I'd like to read

  327. to you in a minute,

  328. godliness is really

  329. the sum of a thousand

  330. small things.

  331. If you ever think about

  332. how Jesus lived his life,

  333. I mean,

  334. you think of Jesus

  335. in his ministry,

  336. but I like thinking of,

  337. imagine what Jesus was like

  338. when he was a teenager,

  339. when he was asked

  340. to do something

  341. that no teenager likes

  342. being asked to do

  343. to do the washing

  344. or clean up.

  345. Or what was Jesus like

  346. when he was really hungry

  347. and was struggling

  348. with being cranky?

  349. Or what was Jesus like

  350. when someone,

  351. you know,

  352. when he stubbed his toe?

  353. Or when someone

  354. was just really rude to him

  355. for no reason

  356. and he was trying

  357. to buy something off him?

  358. I mean,

  359. kind of,

  360. that really is godliness

  361. being lived out.

  362. I'd like to read from you

  363. from Kevin DeYoung.

  364. He's an author.

  365. He wrote a book

  366. about holiness,

  367. a hole in our holiness,

  368. we call it.

  369. And he puts it well.

  370. He said,

  371. Holiness is the sum

  372. of a million little things,

  373. the avoidance

  374. of little evils

  375. and little foibles,

  376. the setting aside

  377. of little bits

  378. of worldliness

  379. and little acts

  380. of compromise,

  381. the putting to death

  382. of little inconsistencies

  383. and little indiscretions,

  384. the attention

  385. to little duties

  386. and little dealings,

  387. the hard work

  388. of little,

  389. small self-denials

  390. and small self-restraints,

  391. the cultivation

  392. of little benevolences

  393. and little forbearances.

  394. Are you trustworthy?

  395. Are you kind?

  396. Are you patient?

  397. Are you joyful?

  398. Do you love?

  399. These qualities

  400. worked out

  401. in all the little things

  402. in life

  403. determine whether

  404. you are a blight

  405. or a blessing

  406. to everyone around you,

  407. whether you are

  408. an ugly spiritual eyesore

  409. or growing

  410. into a good-looking Christian.

  411. And although Christ

  412. is speaking

  413. in a different context,

  414. I think it's helpful

  415. to remember his words.

  416. He said,

  417. you know,

  418. one who is faithful

  419. in a very little

  420. is also faithful

  421. in much.

  422. And one who is dishonest

  423. in a very little

  424. is also dishonest

  425. in much.

  426. I suppose if I give

  427. an example

  428. from my own life,

  429. if I'm praying

  430. for Egypt

  431. and praying,

  432. as I described already,

  433. that God,

  434. the kingdom of God

  435. would be further

  436. through that conflict

  437. and that he would

  438. bring peace.

  439. And then I go out

  440. and my wife asks me

  441. to empty the dishwasher

  442. and I'm like,

  443. then I can't separate

  444. the two.

  445. I can't be cranky

  446. with my wife

  447. and then think

  448. that that's fine

  449. because I'm praying

  450. for big things.

  451. That's how we work

  452. out our salvation.

  453. So,

  454. something that's been

  455. very helpful for me

  456. that I would pass on

  457. and that I think

  458. Peter is drawing

  459. attention to here

  460. is spots and blemishes.

  461. Look for those things

  462. that you think,

  463. it's not that small.

  464. It's not any small thing.

  465. It's part of my personality

  466. or I've always been

  467. that way.

  468. But if it's not

  469. in line with the word

  470. of God,

  471. just get rid of it.

  472. Ask him for his help.

  473. Unless you think,

  474. I know what it's like

  475. to be hearing

  476. preaching about holiness

  477. and sometimes

  478. you can just feel

  479. like you're being

  480. whacked over the head

  481. and you can just

  482. find it,

  483. yeah,

  484. I know I should be

  485. better and I'll try

  486. and do better.

  487. But look back

  488. to chapter 1.

  489. We have all

  490. that we need.

  491. We have everything

  492. that we need.

  493. Holiness,

  494. being Christ-like

  495. is not a pipe dream.

  496. It's not something

  497. that the Lord gave us

  498. just so he could

  499. watch us,

  500. you know,

  501. fumble.

  502. He gave us a goal,

  503. Christ-likeness,

  504. and he's given us

  505. everything that we need.

  506. Now we see that

  507. God sovereignly

  508. changes us,

  509. but we have to

  510. pick up and go

  511. and make every effort.

  512. You're not going to

  513. wake up one day

  514. as some,

  515. you know,

  516. holy saint

  517. with a ring around

  518. the back of your head.

  519. We have to

  520. make every effort

  521. and grow.

  522. Be more godly today

  523. than you were yesterday.

  524. Even if they're

  525. small steps,

  526. they're steps nonetheless.

  527. In verse 15,

  528. I want to just

  529. look at a

  530. phrase here

  531. where he says,

  532. count the patience

  533. of the Lord

  534. as salvation.

  535. I've read this

  536. loads of times

  537. and I never really

  538. understood what he

  539. meant by that.

  540. It's not terribly

  541. complicated when I

  542. actually thought about it.

  543. So,

  544. the word count here

  545. can mean to consider

  546. or to deem

  547. or to account,

  548. to think of.

  549. So,

  550. we could put it like this.

  551. We could say,

  552. consider the patience

  553. of the Lord

  554. as salvation

  555. or deem the patience

  556. of the Lord

  557. or think of the patience

  558. of the Lord

  559. as salvation.

  560. So,

  561. to put it simply,

  562. when we consider

  563. why God hasn't

  564. come back yet,

  565. we should understand

  566. this to be an account,

  567. on account,

  568. of his patience.

  569. A patience

  570. with the aim

  571. of salvation

  572. which Paul,

  573. he spoke of

  574. in Romans chapter 2

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  575. and he said,

  576. you know,

  577. do you presume

  578. on the riches

  579. of his kindness

  580. and forbearance

  581. and patience

  582. not knowing

  583. that God's kindness

  584. is meant to lead

  585. you to repentance?

  586. God's patience

  587. as an expression

  588. of his kindness

  589. is there

  590. so that sinners

  591. will repent.

  592. So,

  593. if someone comes up

  594. to you and goes like,

  595. oh well,

  596. Jesus is taking

  597. his time

  598. coming back

  599. and they're snacky

  600. but I think you can

  601. just kind of

  602. quickly retort

  603. and say,

  604. that's because

  605. he's giving you

  606. time to repent.

  607. You've got time.

  608. I can't guarantee

  609. you much longer

  610. than this minute

  611. but you have time.

  612. People will laugh

  613. at the fact

  614. that Jesus

  615. is coming back

  616. and they'll caricature it

  617. and think they were

  618. like,

  619. you know,

  620. they'll think

  621. they were kind of

  622. like,

  623. you know,

  624. Armageddon

  625. kind of people

  626. but it is a note

  627. and it is a part

  628. of the gospel

  629. and we should warn

  630. people of the wrath

  631. to come.

  632. So,

  633. when someone says,

  634. you know,

  635. I don't see

  636. any signs

  637. that he's coming

  638. back,

  639. then we can

  640. clearly say to them

  641. that's because

  642. he's giving you

  643. time to repent.

  644. He's calling

  645. his people

  646. to himself

  647. and once that's

  648. done,

  649. there will be

  650. no more time

  651. to repent.

  652. That's it.

  653. Verses 15 and 16,

  654. let's have a quick

  655. look at those again.

  656. Count the patience

  657. of the Lord

  658. as salvation

  659. just as our beloved

  660. brother Paul

  661. also wrote to you

  662. according to the

  663. wisdom given him

  664. as he does

  665. in all his letters

  666. when he speaks

  667. in them of these

  668. matters.

  669. There are some

  670. things in them

  671. that are hard

  672. to understand

  673. which the ignorant

  674. and the unstable

  675. twist to their

  676. own destruction

  677. as they do

  678. with the other

  679. scriptures.

  680. Now,

  681. I want to address

  682. this because

  683. this is part

  684. of the text

  685. I've been given

  686. and it might seem

  687. just a little bit

  688. separate to what

  689. I've spoken of

  690. already about being

  691. holy and how we

  692. should hasten and

  693. wait for the Lord

  694. but it's really

  695. important.

  696. Peter refers to

  697. Paul's letter

  698. saying that

  699. Paul also wrote

  700. about these

  701. things and in

  702. doing so he's

  703. emphasizing the

  704. fact that they're

  705. in agreement

  706. about these

  707. things.

  708. So he didn't

  709. have one

  710. apostle going

  711. I think this

  712. is how it's

  713. going to play

  714. out and this

  715. is what you

  716. should do and

  717. another apostle

  718. going well no

  719. I think you

  720. know they're

  721. all in agreement

  722. and Paul is

  723. we understand

  724. he's passed

  725. away at this

  726. time his

  727. letters are in

  728. circulation

  729. probably for

  730. quite a while

  731. and so he's

  732. going on to

  733. point out that

  734. there are some

  735. things in Paul's

  736. letters that are

  737. hard to understand.

  738. I am relieved

  739. that's in the

  740. Bible.

  741. Because I think

  742. we're fooling

  743. ourselves if we

  744. say that the

  745. Bible is simple

  746. to understand

  747. and I kind of

  748. feel sorry for

  749. people who do

  750. kids Bibles and

  751. they come to

  752. passages that are

  753. really hard to

  754. do which is like

  755. you can't really

  756. get around how

  757. complicated that

  758. is.

  759. Paul was a

  760. gigantic intellect

  761. and he spoke in

  762. ways that are

  763. just that are

  764. really rigorous

  765. rigorous and

  766. strong and

  767. watertight but in

  768. order to be

  769. watertight and

  770. rigorous and

  771. strong they're

  772. quite complicated

  773. sometimes.

  774. But Peter says

  775. that there are

  776. ignorant and

  777. unstable people

  778. out there and

  779. what they do is

  780. they twist the

  781. word of God and

  782. that word can

  783. actually even mean

  784. to torture.

  785. I always like to

  786. think of, you

  787. know, remember

  788. Stretch Armstrong

  789. remember those

  790. toys, anything

  791. like that, any

  792. kind of squishy

  793. toys, you pull

  794. them and you can

  795. twist them but if

  796. you let go of

  797. them they just go

  798. back to the way

  799. they were.

  800. And one of the

  801. great things about

  802. the Reformation I

  803. suppose and was

  804. there before the

  805. Reformation was just

  806. being reminded that

  807. the best way to

  808. interpret scripture

  809. is with scripture

  810. and that we

  811. shouldn't twist the

  812. word of God.

  813. And notice why he

  814. says they twist it

  815. to their own

  816. destruction.

  817. I'm sure every

  818. single one of us

  819. in this room, if

  820. we're being honest,

  821. there have been

  822. times you've read

  823. the Bible and

  824. gone, I wish that

  825. wasn't there.

  826. I'll be honest

  827. about it, I just

  828. wish that wasn't

  829. there.

  830. Whether it's

  831. something that

  832. convicts me or

  833. something that I

  834. think is not fair

  835. and oftentimes I've

  836. gone on to

  837. understand it better

  838. and go, okay,

  839. that's not actually

  840. saying what I

  841. think it's saying

  842. but there have

  843. been times when

  844. I've gone, if

  845. that wasn't there

  846. I wouldn't miss it

  847. in some ways.

  848. But whenever we

  849. change the Bible

  850. it's always a

  851. loss, it's never

  852. again.

  853. Never.

  854. No one ever

  855. wins by changing

  856. the Bible.

  857. And when you

  858. have teachers,

  859. false teachers,

  860. who will, by

  861. ignoring passages

  862. of scripture,

  863. they're actually,

  864. their people are

  865. losing out and

  866. they're only doing

  867. damage because the

  868. word of God in

  869. its entirety is

  870. profitable.

  871. It's good for us.

  872. Some of it is

  873. better swallowed than

  874. chewed, as

  875. Spurgeon said,

  876. but it is all

  877. good for us and

  878. we need it all.

  879. And so when they

  880. twist the scriptures

  881. they do it to

  882. their own

  883. destruction.

  884. And so look at

  885. verse 16 and

  886. this is very

  887. important.

  888. He says about

  889. Paul's writings,

  890. he says, as they

  891. do the other

  892. scriptures.

  893. So they twist

  894. Paul's writings as

  895. they do the other

  896. scriptures.

  897. And so Peter here

  898. I think is clearly

  899. affirming the

  900. writings of Paul

  901. whose letters were

  902. known in circulation

  903. for a while as

  904. scripture.

  905. Some have said

  906. that these verses

  907. are not saying

  908. this, but I

  909. think even aside

  910. from the clear

  911. sentence structure

  912. there, if you

  913. look at the fact

  914. that if we found

  915. Paul's letter,

  916. another letter of

  917. Paul today in

  918. Caracol, if we

  919. managed to find

  920. another letter of

  921. Romans part 2,

  922. we wouldn't hold

  923. that as scripture.

  924. We would say

  925. that's a fantastic

  926. find and we can

  927. get a mind even

  928. more into the

  929. mind of Paul,

  930. a view, but we

  931. wouldn't hold that

  932. as scripture.

  933. And so, what

  934. he's saying is

  935. that if they

  936. twist Paul's

  937. letters, if Paul's

  938. letters and he's

  939. referring to them

  940. as not scripture

  941. and they twist

  942. them, then they're

  943. just twisting

  944. Paul's letters.

  945. They're not

  946. twisting scripture.

  947. If I write a

  948. letter to someone

  949. here about the

  950. Christian faith and

  951. they twist it and

  952. misinterpret it,

  953. they're not going

  954. to get destroyed

  955. for that.

  956. But if it's

  957. scripture they're

  958. twisting, you see

  959. the link?

  960. If it's not

  961. scripture then it

  962. can't be eternally

  963. fately.

  964. And so, that's

  965. just a run

  966. through of those

  967. verses, but I

  968. want us just to

  969. recap.

  970. Ask yourself

  971. again, think about

  972. it this morning,

  973. later today, when

  974. you go to work

  975. tomorrow, whatever

  976. you're doing.

  977. That Christ's

  978. second coming is

  979. coming and that

  980. he is coming

  981. back.

  982. He will come

  983. back to judge the

  984. living and the

  985. dead.

  986. In the meantime,

  987. let us be holy and

  988. about our

  989. master's business,

  990. the great

  991. commission, until

  992. he comes or we

  993. die.

  994. We can also die.

  995. So, one of

  996. those will come.

  997. I used to think

  998. in terms of

  999. motivation, the

  1000. fact that one

  1001. day I know I'm

  1002. going to die, but

  1003. I just forgot the

  1004. fact that you

  1005. might actually die,

  1006. Christ might just

  1007. come back, and he

  1008. might meet you

  1009. before you get to

  1010. meet him, as it

  1011. were.

  1012. He might show up

  1013. by surprise.

  1014. You know, one of

  1015. my first passages of

  1016. scripture that I ever

  1017. memorized, and I hope I

1018. can do it justice this

  1019. time.

  1020. It was Mark 8.

  1021. And he said, you

  1022. know, Jesus was

  1023. speaking to his

  1024. disciples, and he

  1025. said, if anyone

  1026. will come after me,

1027. let him take up his

  1028. cross and follow me.

  1029. For whoever would

  1030. save his life will

  1031. lose it.

  1032. Whoever loses his

1033. life for my sake and

  1034. the gospel will save

  1035. it.

  1036. He said, you

  1037. know, whoever is

  1038. ashamed of me and

1039. of my words, and of

  1040. my words in this

  1041. wicked and adulterous

  1042. generation, of him

1043. will the Son of Man

  1044. also be ashamed when

1045. he comes in the glory

1046. of his Father with the

  1047. holy angels.

  1048. I'm sure I've missed

1049. out a small bit, but

  1050. the point being that

  1051. Christ will come back,

  1052. and as he said

  1053. himself, will I find

  1054. faith on her?

  1055. So let's lay aside

  1056. every weight and

  1057. every sin which

  1058. clings so closely and

  1059. run with endurance the

1060. race that is set before

  1061. us.

  1062. And in closing, I'd

1063. like to just read from

  1064. Isaiah 40, which I

  1065. think really speaks to

  1066. how temporal this life

1067. is and how small we

  1068. are really.

  1069. Isaiah 40, verses 6

    Isaiah 40:6–8

  1070. to 8.

  1071. All flesh is like

  1072. grass, and all its

  1073. beauty is like the

  1074. flower of the field.

  1075. The grass withers, the

  1076. flower fades, when the

  1077. breath of the Lord

  1078. blows upon it.

  1079. Surely the people are

  1080. grass.

  1081. The grass withers, the

  1082. flower fades, but the

1083. word of our God will

  1084. stand forever.

  1085. Let's pray.

  1086. Let's pray.
