  1. Verse 30, page 1013.

  2. They left that place and passed through Galilee.

  3. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were,

  4. because he was teaching his disciples.

  5. He said to them,

  6. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.

  7. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.

  8. But they did not understand what he meant,

  9. and were afraid to ask him about it.

  10. They came to Capernaum, where he was in the house.

  11. When he was in the house, he asked them,

  12. What are you arguing about on the road?

  13. But they kept quiet,

  14. because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.

  15. Sitting down, Jesus called the twelve and said,

  16. If anyone wants to be first,

  17. he must be the very last and the servant of all.

  18. He took a little child and had him stand among them.

  19. Taking him in his arms, he said to them,

  20. Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me,

  21. and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me,

  22. but the one who sent me.

  23. Teacher, said John,

  24. We saw a man driving out demons in your name,

  25. and we told him to stop,

  26. because he was not one of us.

  27. Do not stop him, Jesus said.

  28. No one who does a miracle in my name

  29. can in the morning,

  30. in the next moment,

  31. say anything bad about me,

  32. for whoever is not against us

  33. is for us.

  34. I tell you the truth,

  35. anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name

  36. because you belong to Christ

  37. will certainly not lose his reward.

  38. And if anyone causes one of these little ones

  39. who believe in me to sin,

  40. it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea

  41. with a large millstone tied around his neck.

  42. If your hand causes you to sin,

  43. cut it off.

  44. It is better for you to enter life maimed

  45. than with two hands

  46. to go into hell,

  47. where the fire never goes out.

  48. And if your foot causes you to sin,

  49. cut it off.

  50. It is better for you to enter life crippled

  51. than to have two feet

  52. and be thrown into hell.

  53. And if your eye causes you to sin,

  54. pluck it out.

  55. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God

  56. with one eye

  57. than to have two eyes

  58. and be thrown into hell,

  59. where their worms do not die

  60. and the fire is not quenched.

  61. Everyone will be salted with fire.

  62. Salt is good,

  63. but if it loses its saltiness,

  64. how can you make it salty again?

  65. Have salt in yourselves

  66. and be at peace with each other.

  67. Thanks very much, Maria.

  68. Well, please keep your Bibles open

  69. at that section we've just read.

  70. We've just started a new series,

  71. which is looking at the second half

  72. of Mark's Gospel,

  73. which really is the last few months of his life

  74. while he was on earth

  75. and the journey that he takes

  76. with his disciples towards the cross.

  77. So we're going to be looking at that section

  78. that Maria just read.

  79. And before we do,

  80. we're going to pray.

  81. Hopefully you've got a piece of paper,

  82. maybe to take notes,

  83. or you can use the back of your news sheet there.

  84. And if you have any questions

  85. or anything that you want to ask after,

  86. then please feel free to do that.

  87. So let's pray.

  88. Father, we thank you for this account

  89. about Jesus while he was here on earth,

  90. for the things that have been recorded.

  91. And yet, even as we've just read them now,

  92. some of them sound quite strange to us.

  93. Some of it perhaps quite hard.

  94. And so, Father, we need the help of your Holy Spirit

  95. to not only understand with our minds,

  96. but we need your Spirit

  97. so that it will change our hearts

  98. to show us what it is

  99. to be a disciple of Jesus.

  100. So please help us right now.

  101. We come as disciples,

  102. people who want to learn from you.

  103. We want you to teach us

  104. through your word.

  105. So come, Spirit, teach us.

  106. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  107. Amen.

  108. Now, before I start,

  109. has anybody got the flicker?

  110. I'll do it.

  111. Thank you.

  112. Thank you very much.

  113. You're hired.

  114. That's what every contestant longs to hear

  115. from Lord Sugar

  116. as they seek to become the winner

  117. of The Apprentice.

  118. What's on offer?

  119. Well, a six-figured salary

  120. and the opportunity to partner with him

  121. in a multi-billion business.

  122. The way to win is simple.

  123. You must be arrogant and stubborn

  124. with a ruthless desire to be successful.

  125. Stab your opponent in the back.

  126. Rather than serve people,

  127. you must use people.

  128. In Mark's gospel here,

  129. we are introduced to the apprentices of Jesus.

  130. Verse 30.

  131. They left.

  132. That's Jesus and his disciples.

  133. They left that place and passed through Galilee.

  134. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were

  135. because he was teaching his disciples.

  136. known as the Twelve.

  137. They were to learn what it meant to be a disciple.

  138. That's what disciple means.

  139. They are a learner.

  140. And Jesus is teaching them

  141. what it is to be a follower of Jesus.

  142. But in contrast to Lord Sugar,

  143. not sure who gave him that title,

  144. the one and only Lord Jesus Christ,

  145. offers his apprentices not success,

  146. but suffering.

  147. Look at verse 31.

  148. He said to them,

  149. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed

  150. into the hands of men.

  151. They will kill him,

  152. and after three days he will rise.

  153. The Son of Man was a title for Jesus,

  154. a title of absolute power and supreme authority.

  155. But this man of great power,

  156. the God-man,

  157. would be killed.

  158. You see, the death of Jesus

  159. is not just the means for becoming a disciple,

  160. but is also the model for living as a disciple.

  161. That's why he's teaching about his death.

  162. It's not just the means for becoming a disciple,

  163. but his death is also the pattern,

  164. the shape of a disciple's life.

  165. At this point in the account,

  166. Jesus is six months from his death,

  167. and the journey that is going to lead him to his death

  168. is a journey that we are called to live

  169. every single day.

  170. It is nothing less than a life of humble service

  171. with a ruthless desire to remove any hint

  172. of self-centred living.

  173. Look at verse 32.

  174. But they didn't understand what he meant,

  175. and they were afraid to ask him about it.

  176. Who in their right mind

  177. wants to model their life

  178. on someone who's going to die a terrible death?

  179. Do you?

  180. Surely there must be an easier way to go.

  181. No.

  182. This is a call to radical discipleship.

  183. If we crave comfort

  184. and a nice, gentle lifestyle,

  185. if we long for popularity and acceptance,

  186. if we desire to be the ones who control our life,

  187. then please close your Bible right now.

  188. Put it under your seat,

  189. close your eyes,

  190. and go to sleep.

  191. Because what follows

  192. is not for you

  193. if you want a gentle life.

  194. After all, as we've just read in verse 31,

  195. Jesus doesn't want others to hear

  196. what it is that he teaches

  197. to his disciples.

  198. Because not everybody can handle it.

  199. So what does he teach?

  200. Well, first,

  201. being a disciple means

  202. serving the weak,

  203. not seeking to be great.

  204. Verse 33,

  205. they came to Capernaum.

  206. When he was in the house,

  207. obviously,

  208. of one of the disciples,

  209. he asked them,

  210. what were you arguing about on the road?

  211. But they kept quiet,

  212. red-faced,

  213. and embarrassed.

  214. Because on the way,

  215. they had argued about

  216. who was the greatest.

  217. So who do you think

  218. is the greatest in this church?

  219. Go on.

  220. Who do you think?

  221. Well, we don't like to publicly

  222. talk about it, do we?

  223. That is embarrassing.

  224. But we can unconsciously

  225. practice it.

  226. You see,

  227. we can be preoccupied

  228. with appearing great,

  229. that we simply forget

  230. to do great things.

  231. Verse 35,

  232. sitting down,

  233. which in that culture,

  234. in that time,

  235. was actually a position

  236. of authority.

  237. So Jesus sits down,

  238. he's saying basically

  239. to his disciples,

  240. hang on a minute,

  241. you're talking about greatness?

  242. Well, listen to the one

  243. who knows what true greatness

  244. is all about.

  245. He called the twelve

  246. and he said,

  247. if anyone wants to be first,

  248. he must be the very last

  249. and the servant of all.

  250. Did we get that quite right?

  251. Did he say last?

  252. Did he say servant?

  253. How is that greatness?

  254. But yet,

  255. that's what Jesus came to do for us.

  256. He was the one

  257. who was great,

  258. but became last,

  259. the lowest of the low.

  260. He was the one

  261. who became a servant,

  262. giving up of his rights

  263. and ultimately,

  264. giving of his life.

  265. That's what greatness is.

  266. And Jesus now demonstrates

  267. to us what this

  268. will look like

  269. in practice.

  270. verse 36.

  271. He took a little child

  272. and had him stand among them.

  273. What's so great about that,

  274. you think?

  275. Well,

  276. children

  277. in that culture

  278. are not treated

  279. as they are

  280. in ours.

  281. We have a special place

  282. for children

  283. in the

  284. Roman Greek culture.

  285. The father would decide

  286. if the child

  287. actually lived or died

  288. when it was born.

  289. If he thought

  290. they couldn't support

  291. the child

  292. for financial reasons,

  293. or if they thought

  294. the baby was going

  295. to be sick,

  296. they were left

  297. outside

  298. or abandoned.

  299. So children

  300. in this context

  301. were a good example

  302. of the lowest

  303. of all people

  304. and nobody.

  305. But look what Jesus does.

  306. It's both shocking

  307. and surprising.

  308. He takes the little child,

  309. has them stand

  310. among them,

  311. but not only that,

  312. he takes him

  313. in his arms

  314. and he said to them,

  315. whoever welcomes

  316. one of these

  317. little children

  318. in my name

  319. welcomes me.

  320. Now this isn't

  321. about cute

  322. little kids.

  323. It's about

  324. all those

  325. regardless of age

  326. who are considered

  327. insignificant

  328. and less

  329. than everybody else.

  330. So through this

  331. very visual example,

  332. Jesus is saying

  333. to his disciples,

  334. look,

  335. if you want to

  336. not just appear

  337. great,

  338. but if you

  339. really want

  340. to do

  341. great things,

  342. then we need

  343. to begin

  344. to serve

  345. the weak

  346. and the insignificant,

  347. the nobodies

  348. within our community.

  349. For us,

  350. it might mean

  351. inviting

  352. not the popular

  353. nice people

  354. to our home,

  355. but the outsider,

  356. the one that

  357. nobody really

  358. bothers with.

  359. It might mean

  360. giving of our

  361. time.

  362. Not to those

  363. who are like us

  364. and might say

  365. thank you

  366. or give us

  367. something in

  368. return,

  369. but to those

  370. who are

  371. ostracized,

  372. those who

  373. struggle to fit in,

  374. those who

  375. can't give

  376. anything in

  377. return.

  378. Isn't that

  379. what Jesus

  380. did for us?

  381. Jesus came

  382. into this world

  383. to serve

  384. weak,

  385. insignificant,

  386. nobodies

  387. like us.

  388. He came

  389. to welcome

  390. sinful

  391. outsiders

  392. like us

  393. to welcome

  394. us in,

  395. to bring us

  396. in,

  397. to be part

  398. of his

  399. family.

  400. family.

  401. You see,

  402. a church

  403. family that

  404. does not

  405. welcome

  406. all people,

  407. regardless of

  408. their race

  409. or their

  410. particular

  411. social

  412. background

  413. or class

  414. or their

  415. religion,

  416. is a church

  417. of pseudo

  418. disciples,

  419. fake believers

  420. who want

  421. to appear

  422. great

  423. rather than

  424. do great

  425. things.

  426. So first,

  427. being a

  428. disciple means

  429. serving the

  430. weak and

  431. not seeking

  432. to be

  433. great.

  434. Second,

  435. he goes

  436. on,

  437. being a

  438. disciple means

  439. humility in

  440. ministry,

  441. not superiority

  442. in ministry.

  443. Verse 38,

  444. Teacher,

  445. said John,

  446. well,

  447. we saw a

  448. man driving

  449. out demons

  450. in your

  451. name.

  452. But don't

  453. worry,

  454. we told

  455. him to

  456. stop because

  457. he wasn't

  458. one of us.

  459. Literally,

  460. he wasn't

  461. following us.

  462. Now,

  463. how arrogant

  464. is that?

  465. John,

  466. it seems,

  467. is more

  468. concerned about

  469. his privileged

  470. position.

  471. John wants

  472. status,

  473. not service.

  474. discipleship.

  475. But John

  476. is so far

  477. from true

  478. discipleship

  479. because the

  480. way of

  481. Jesus was

  482. marked by

  483. humility.

  484. He didn't

  485. hold on to

  486. his position.

  487. He gave

  488. up his

  489. position for

  490. us.

  491. He humbled

  492. himself to

  493. the point of

  494. death on a

  495. cross so that

  496. we might become

  497. the privileged

  498. followers of

  499. Jesus.

  500. In fact,

  501. Jesus shows us

  502. the kind of

  503. humility that

  504. he looks for

  505. from his

  506. disciples.

  507. Verse 39,

  508. we can just

  509. picture it,

  510. John,

  511. do not

  512. stop him.

  513. no one who

  514. does a

  515. miracle in

  516. my name

  517. can in the

  518. next moment

  519. say anything

  520. bad about

  521. me,

  522. for whoever

  523. is not

  524. against us

  525. is for

  526. us.

  527. Can you

  528. not see

  529. it's not

  530. about superiority

  531. over people,

  532. but humility

  533. towards people.

  534. It's about

  535. being generous

  536. hearted to

  537. other believers,

  538. other disciples,

  539. even if they're

  540. not part of

  541. your little

  542. particular

  543. denominational

  544. group.

  545. I think we

  546. can suffer

  547. with John's

  548. attitude,

  549. I know I

  550. can,

  551. wanting to

  552. hold on to

  553. my position,

  554. wanting to

  555. have status,

  556. thinking that

  557. the only

  558. possible way

  559. that God

  560. can work

  561. is through

  562. me,

  563. or that

  564. the only

  565. way God

  566. can work

  567. is through

  568. this church

  569. or through

  570. that particular

  571. denomination.

  572. well,

  573. as disciples,

  574. we need to

  575. quickly understand

  576. that God's

  577. work is not

  578. confined to

  579. any one

  580. person or

  581. one church.

  582. If they are

  583. preaching Christ,

  584. or as it says

  585. in verse 40,

  586. whoever is

  587. for us,

  588. they can't be

  589. against us.

  590. then we

  591. should be

  592. humble enough

  593. to accept

  594. them and

  595. welcome

  596. them.

  597. It seems

  598. that Jesus

  599. has a

  600. broader view

  601. of ministry

  602. than perhaps

  603. we do.

  604. Jesus came

  605. in humility

  606. to minister

  607. to us.

  608. He didn't

  609. just dismiss

  610. us or

  611. ignore us,

  612. but he

  613. stretched out

  614. his arms

  615. on the

  616. cross to

  617. include us.

  618. His

  619. ministry

  620. was broad

  621. enough

  622. to bring

  623. close to

  624. himself

  625. people like

  626. us who

  627. were against

  628. him.

  629. In

  630. humility

  631. he came.

  632. Look at

  633. verse 41.

  634. Jesus

  635. says,

  636. I tell you

  637. the truth,

  638. anyone who

  639. gives you

  640. a cup of

  641. water in

  642. my name

  643. because you

  644. belong to

  645. Christ will

  646. certainly not

  647. lose his

  648. reward.

  649. Jesus is

  650. looking forward

  651. at this stage

  652. to a time

  653. when the

  654. disciples will

  655. actually be

  656. out on

  657. ministry

  658. themselves,

  659. no longer

  660. with Jesus.

  661. Jesus will

  662. have returned

  663. to heaven

  664. and they

  665. would be

  666. out on

  667. their own.

  668. And he's

  669. saying,

  670. look,

  671. as you

  672. go about

  673. doing

  674. ministry,

  675. you're

  676. going to

  677. meet people

  678. and they're

  679. going to

  680. come to

  681. you and

  682. serve you,

  683. perhaps give

  684. you some

  685. water or

  686. some food.

  687. They're

  688. going to

  689. welcome

  690. you.

  691. And the

  692. people who

  693. do that,

  694. it's evidence

  695. that they

  696. too are

  697. disciples,

  698. that they

  699. too love

  700. Jesus.

  701. So the

  702. question is,

  703. are we as

  704. generous and

  705. welcoming of

  706. God's people?

  707. People who

  708. perhaps come

  709. to this

  710. family of

  711. this church

  712. from other

  713. places,

  714. other Christians

  715. who've

  716. moved here?

  717. Do we

  718. show that

  719. generosity

  720. of a

  721. welcome?

  722. Or do

  723. we kind

  724. of keep

  725. people at

  726. arm's length

  727. with a

  728. sense of

  729. superiority

  730. because,

  731. well,

  732. they don't

  733. really fit

  734. in and

  735. they don't

  736. do things

  737. our way,

  738. you know.

  739. So being

  740. a disciple

  741. means humility

  742. in ministry,

  743. not superiority

  744. in ministry.

  745. Third,

  746. being a

  747. disciple

  748. means being

  749. ruthless

  750. with sin,

  751. not casual

  752. with sin.

  753. Verse 42,

  754. and if

  755. anyone

  756. causes one

  757. of these

  758. little ones,

  759. that is,

  760. any other

  761. disciple,

  762. a follower

  763. of Jesus,

  764. if anyone

  765. causes one

  766. of these

  767. disciples who

  768. believes in

  769. me to sin,

  770. it would

  771. be better

  772. for them

  773. to be

  774. thrown into

  775. the sea

  776. with a

  777. large

  778. millstone

  779. tied around

  780. his neck.

  781. How

  782. serious

  783. he is,

  784. causing

  785. another

  786. disciple,

  787. another

  788. follower

  789. of Jesus

  790. to fall

  791. away

  792. from God

  793. or to

  794. turn away

  795. from God

  796. is serious.

  797. Because what

  798. we say

  799. and how

  800. we live

  801. as a

  802. disciple

  803. really

  804. matters.

  805. Sin is

  806. not personal,

  807. it's not a

  808. private matter,

  809. it not only

  810. affects my

  811. life

  812. if I

  813. sin,

  814. but

  815. my sin

  816. affects the

  817. community

  818. of believers

  819. around me.

  820. In fact,

  821. it is so

  822. serious that

  823. such a

  824. person will

  825. face the

  826. full weight

  827. of God's

  828. wrath.

  829. It will

  830. be like,

  831. as he says

  832. at the end

  833. of verse

  834. 42,

  835. being thrown

  836. into the

  837. sea with

  838. a large

  839. millstone

  840. tied around

  841. his neck.

  842. Jesus

  843. took sin

  844. seriously.

  845. he came

  846. into the

  847. world to

  848. take

  849. our sin

  850. on himself.

  851. He faced

  852. the full

  853. weight of

  854. God's

  855. wrath around

  856. his neck

  857. for us.

  858. He died

  859. in our

  860. place on

  861. the cross.

  862. He took

  863. the blame

  864. for our

  865. sin so

  866. that we

  867. could live

  868. a different

  869. way,

  870. so that

  871. we could

  872. be ruthless

  873. with the

  874. sin that

  875. is in

  876. our lives.

  877. let's

  878. read the

  879. verses of

  880. verse 43

  881. to 48.

  882. If your

  883. hand

  884. causes you

  885. to sin,

  886. cut it

  887. off.

  888. It is

  889. better for

  890. you to

  891. enter life

  892. maimed

  893. than with

  894. two hands

  895. to go

  896. into hell

  897. where the

  898. fire never

  899. goes out.

  900. And if

  901. your foot

  902. causes you

  903. to sin,

  904. cut it

  905. off.

  906. it is

  907. better for

  908. you to

  909. enter life

  910. crippled

  911. than to

  912. have two

  913. feet and

  914. be thrown

  915. into hell.

  916. And if

  917. your eye

  918. causes you

  919. to sin,

  920. pluck it

  921. out.

  922. It is

  923. better for

  924. you to

  925. enter the

  926. kingdom of

  927. God with

  928. one eye

  929. than to

  930. have two

  931. eyes and

  932. be thrown

  933. into hell.

  934. If ever

  935. we were

  936. in doubt

  937. as to

  938. the seriousness

  939. of avoiding

  940. sin in

  941. our lives

  942. or not

  943. dealing with

  944. sin in

  945. our lives,

  946. this awakens

  947. us to the

  948. terrible and

  949. eternal

  950. consequences of

  951. being casual

  952. about sin.

  953. sin.

  954. I'm going to

  955. read that

  956. again.

  957. If ever

  958. we're in

  959. doubt as to

  960. the seriousness

  961. of avoiding

  962. or not

  963. dealing with

  964. sin in

  965. our lives,

  966. this must

  967. awaken us to

  968. the terrible and

  969. eternal consequences

  970. of just being

  971. casual.

  972. sin.

  973. So as I

  974. read this,

  975. and maybe

  976. you're thinking,

  977. how come I

  978. still have my

  979. two hands and

  980. my two feet and

  981. my two eyes?

  982. Have I never

  983. sinned?

  984. Well, you can be

  985. sure it's not

  986. because I never

  987. sin.

  988. I do.

  989. Too much.

  990. Jesus'

  991. teaching about

  992. cutting and

  993. plucking is

  994. not to be

  995. taken literally.

  996. We're not to

  997. go and perform

  998. surgery on each

  999. other and cut

  1000. each other's hands

  1001. and feet and

  1002. pull each other's

  1003. eyes out.

  1004. But this means

  1005. we are to take

  1006. things seriously.

  1007. He's using

  1008. strong language

  1009. deliberately to

  1010. drive the point

  1011. home.

  1012. Whatever we do

  1013. with our hands,

  1014. wherever we

  1015. happen to go

  1016. with our feet,

  1017. whatever we

  1018. see with our

  1019. eyes, if any

  1020. part of our

  1021. life causes

  1022. us to sin,

  1023. kill it,

  1024. cut it out,

  1025. deal with it

  1026. before it

  1027. kills you.

  1028. Anything

  1029. less is to

  1030. ignore the

  1031. reality of

  1032. hell itself.

  1033. God's

  1034. love.

  1035. Johnny, you

  1036. can't really

  1037. mean this,

  1038. can you?

  1039. If Jesus

  1040. didn't literally

  1041. mean cut

  1042. off your

  1043. hands, then

  1044. it's not too

  1045. far to kind of

  1046. go as far to

  1047. say, well, he

  1048. didn't literally

  1049. mean hell.

  1050. Well, to

  1051. underline that

  1052. hell is real,

  1053. Jesus quotes

  1054. from Isaiah.

  1055. Look at

  1056. verse 48.

  1057. The end of

  1058. verse 47, he

  1059. says, you'll

  1060. be thrown

  1061. into hell

  1062. where?

  1063. And he

  1064. quotes Isaiah

  1065. where their

  1066. worm does

  1067. not die and

  1068. the fire is

  1069. not quenched.

  1070. That quote is

  1071. from the very

  1072. last verse,

  1073. you can look it

  1074. up later if you

  1075. wish, the very

  1076. last verse in

  1077. the book of

  1078. Isaiah, which

  1079. comes at the

  1080. end of two

  1081. long chapters of

  1082. God's wonderful

  1083. salvation, his

  1084. promise of

  1085. restoration and

  1086. renewal and

  1087. all that he's

  1088. going to do, but

  1089. at the very end

  1090. it ends with

  1091. this serious

  1092. note of

  1093. judgment.

  1094. The very last

  1095. verse.

  1096. Let me read

  1097. it to you.

  1098. Here's the

  1099. full verse.

  1100. They will go

  1101. out and look

  1102. upon the dead

  1103. bodies of those

  1104. who rebelled

  1105. against me.

  1106. Their worm

  1107. will not die,

  1108. nor will their

  1109. fire be quenched

  1110. in other words,

  1111. this is eternal

  1112. suffering and

  1113. they will be

  1114. loathsome to

  1115. all mankind.

  1116. It's a reality.

  1117. And you know

  1118. what?

  1119. If it were not

  1120. for the death

  1121. of Jesus,

  1122. we would all

  1123. be facing

  1124. hell.

  1125. Jesus came

  1126. to be ruthless

  1127. with sin

  1128. because we

  1129. could never

  1130. do it.

  1131. He came to

  1132. be our

  1133. sin.

  1134. He took

  1135. on all the

  1136. wrong things

  1137. that I've

  1138. ever done

  1139. and that you've

  1140. ever done.

  1141. He endured

  1142. the judgment

  1143. that we deserve.

  1144. He suffered

  1145. the depths

  1146. of hell

  1147. for us

  1148. so that we

  1149. don't have

  1150. to.

  1151. He did it

  1152. all for us

  1153. so that we

  1154. could actually

  1155. live a different

  1156. way so that

  1157. we could

  1158. fight the

  1159. sin in our

  1160. lives.

  1161. This is a

  1162. sober reminder

  1163. to all of us

  1164. as disciples

  1165. of Jesus.

  1166. How we view

  1167. sin and

  1168. more importantly

  1169. what we do

  1170. with the sin

  1171. that is still

  1172. in our lives

  1173. determines

  1174. our eternal

  1175. destiny.

  1176. so being a

  1177. disciple means

  1178. being ruthless

  1179. with sin

  1180. and not

  1181. casual with

  1182. sin.

  1183. I said it

  1184. was hard

  1185. and I think

  1186. that's why

  1187. Jesus took

  1188. his disciples

  1189. alone

  1190. because it

  1191. is difficult

  1192. but yet

  1193. there's joy

  1194. in discipleship.

  1195. This is the

  1196. radical nature

  1197. of discipleship.

  1198. This is what

  1199. it means

  1200. to follow

  1201. Jesus

  1202. and if we're

  1203. in any doubt

  1204. as to its

  1205. difficulty

  1206. look at

  1207. verse 49

  1208. everyone

  1209. will be

  1210. salted

  1211. with fire.

  1212. In other

  1213. words he's

  1214. saying the

  1215. path of

  1216. discipleship

  1217. will mean

  1218. a life

  1219. of suffering.

  1220. Serving

  1221. the weak

  1222. being humble

  1223. towards others

  1224. being ruthless

  1225. with sin

  1226. that's not a

  1227. walk in the

  1228. park

  1229. that's really

  1230. tough.

  1231. but it's

  1232. really good.

  1233. It's really

  1234. good.

  1235. It's good

  1236. for you.

  1237. Look at

  1238. verse 50

  1239. changing the

  1240. metaphor

  1241. Jesus says

  1242. salt is

  1243. good

  1244. but if it

  1245. loses its

  1246. saltiness

  1247. how can you

  1248. make it salty

  1249. again?

  1250. Have salt

  1251. in yourselves

  1252. and be at

  1253. peace with

  1254. each other.

  1255. water.

  1256. We don't

  1257. use salt

  1258. in the

  1259. same way

  1260. but again

  1261. in the

  1262. times that

  1263. it was

  1264. written

  1265. salt

  1266. will

  1267. preserve

  1268. and salt

  1269. will purify

  1270. food.

  1271. So Jesus

  1272. is saying

  1273. the suffering

  1274. and the

  1275. path that

  1276. we take

  1277. as disciples

  1278. it will

  1279. preserve

  1280. and purify

  1281. you.

  1282. if there's

  1283. no salt

  1284. in the

  1285. food

  1286. it's going

  1287. to rot

  1288. and be

  1289. mouldy

  1290. and stink

  1291. and go

  1292. off.

  1293. So without

  1294. the salt

  1295. of suffering

  1296. we will

  1297. never become

  1298. the disciples

  1299. and the

  1300. people that

  1301. God calls

  1302. us to be.

  1303. so he

  1304. says it's

  1305. good.

  1306. And

  1307. thankfully

  1308. Jesus

  1309. took the

  1310. ultimate

  1311. suffering

  1312. for us

  1313. our sin

  1314. death

  1315. hell

  1316. itself

  1317. so that

  1318. the path

  1319. of suffering

  1320. that we

  1321. now walk

  1322. as his

  1323. disciples

  1324. as we

  1325. journey

  1326. with him

  1327. it will

  1328. change us

  1329. and transform

  1330. us

  1331. and make

  1332. us to be

  1333. more like

  1334. Jesus.

  1335. in a

  1336. contradiction

  1337. to the

  1338. world's

  1339. standards

  1340. suffering

  1341. is good

  1342. for us

  1343. and we

  1344. can be

  1345. joyful

  1346. in walking

  1347. the path

  1348. because

  1349. one day

  1350. suffering

  1351. will end

  1352. and

  1353. suffering

  1354. will

  1355. have

  1356. fulfilled

  1357. its work

  1358. within us

  1359. because we

  1360. will see

  1361. Jesus

  1362. and not

  1363. only will

  1364. we see

  1365. Jesus

  1366. but we

  1367. will be

  1368. like

  1369. Jesus

  1370. the

  1371. ultimate

  1372. and true

  1373. disciple

  1374. we will

  1375. become

  1376. like him

  1377. in every

  1378. way

  1379. living with

  1380. him

  1381. for all

  1382. eternity

  1383. this is

  1384. the joy

  1385. in being

  1386. a disciple

  1387. is it

  1388. hard

  1389. absolutely

  1390. is it

  1391. worth it

  1392. without

  1393. a doubt

  1394. are we

  1395. hired

  1396. are we

  1397. an

  1398. apprentice

  1399. of the

  1400. Lord

  1401. Jesus

  1402. following

  1403. him

  1404. as his

  1405. disciple

  1406. let's

  1407. pray

  1408. father

  1409. perhaps

  1410. in some

  1411. ways

  1412. we're

  1413. just

  1414. like

  1415. the

  1416. disciples

  1417. as they

  1418. first

  1419. heard

  1420. those

  1421. words

  1422. of

  1423. Jesus

  1424. we

  1425. find it

  1426. hard to

  1427. understand

  1429. we're

  1430. even

  1431. afraid

  1432. to ask

  1433. what all

  1434. this

  1435. means

  1436. this is

  1437. this is

  1438. hard

  1439. for us

  1440. this is

  1441. not easy

  1445. give us

  1446. a heart

  1447. to

  1448. accept

  1449. your

  1467. is hard

  1468. it is

  1469. good for

  1470. us

  1471. and it

  1472. is your

  1473. good way

  1474. of changing

  1475. us and

  1476. transforming us

  1477. to be more

  1478. like Jesus

  1479. so that as

  1480. we go out

  1481. into the

  1482. world we

  1483. reflect the

  1484. beauty of

  1485. Christ

  1486. and we

  1487. begin to

  1488. serve

  1489. others who

  1490. are weak

  1491. the nobodies

  1492. and we

  1493. begin to be

  1494. humble in

  1495. our ministry

  1496. and we

  1497. begin to see

  1498. the sin that

  1499. needs to be

  1500. rooted out

  1501. father be

  1502. gentle with

  1503. us

  1504. and continue
