  1. Let's ask God for his help as we look at his word together.

  2. Father God, by your Holy Spirit, would you please open up our eyes so that we may see

  3. Jesus, that we may know who he is, that we may understand what he has done for us, and

  4. what it means to follow him.

  5. Father, please, we ask that every one of us here this morning would encounter Jesus afresh,

  6. and that not one of us would leave this building without being changed, without being transformed

  7. by you.

  8. We come with open hands because we are needy people and we ask you to fill us and to teach

  9. us.

  10. We pray this for your honour and for your glory.

  11. Amen.

  12. Men wanted for hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness,

  13. constant danger, safe return doubtful, honour and recognition in case of success.

  14. Well, that was the advert placed in a London newspaper by the great explorer Ernest Shackleton as

  15. he looked for a team to travel to the Antarctic.

  16. In reality, it was a call to come and die.

  17. Here in Mark's Gospel, Jesus called us to come and die.

  18. Look at verse 32.

  19. They were on their way up to Jerusalem with Jesus leading the way.

  20. Jerusalem for Jesus meant one thing, suffering and ultimately death.

  21. It was the place where he would be executed and nailed to a cross.

  22. No wonder the disciples were astonished while those who followed were afraid.

  23. Jesus leading from the front deliberately and intentionally walking towards his death.

  24. Now we struggle with that because, well let's be honest, we crave comfort.

  25. We desire safety.

  26. We want prosperity.

  27. We want health and wealth.

  28. We want a Jesus who will say to us, hold on to your nice, private, material life.

  29. We want a Jesus who will say, I'm going to make your life easy and suffering free.

  30. We really don't want a Jesus who says, come and die.

  31. But like the disciples, we need Jesus to teach us.

  32. Look at the rest of verse 32.

  33. Again, he took the twelve aside and he told them what was going to happen to him.

  34. And what follows in this section is an invitation to come and die with Jesus.

  35. First, Jesus must suffer for us, but calls us to die for him.

  36. Look at verse 33.

  37. He says, we are going up to Jerusalem.

  38. He said, and the Son of Man, that's Jesus, will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.

  39. This is my mission.

  40. This is why I have come.

  41. I have come to suffer and to die for you.

  42. Verse 33.

  43. They will condemn him, that's Jesus, to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles who will mock him, spit on him, flog him and kill him.

  44. And three days later, he will rise.

  45. The physical suffering, the pain and the agony of Jesus was immense.

  46. The deep lacerations caused by the barbs of lead on each strand of the whip.

  47. The twisted crown of nail-like thorns crushed into his skull.

  48. The punching, the loss of blood, the timber beam that he carries.

  49. The jagged nails hammered into sinew and bone, piercing feet and hands.

  50. Naked.

  51. Hanging.

  52. Suffering.

  53. Dying.

  54. But that is nothing compared to the ultimate suffering.

  55. Jesus refers to it a little later on when he describes what he must go through.

  56. Look down at verse 38.

  57. Jesus says in response to the disciples who thought they could do what Jesus was going to do.

  58. Jesus says, you don't know what you are asking.

  59. Jesus said, can you drink the cup I drink?

  60. Or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?

  61. Jesus said, can you drink the cup?

  62. Jesus said, can you drink the cup?

  63. The cup and baptism, well, they were word pictures of his death.

  64. The cup, on the one hand, was symbolic of God's wrath, his judgment, his fair and just response to rebels like you and me.

  65. The baptism, well, that was being forsaken, abandoned by God when he cried out on the cross,

  66. why have you forsaken me?

  67. As Jesus took my sin and your sin upon himself.

  68. And Jesus is saying here, I drank that cup for you.

  69. I endured that cup for you.

  70. Jesus died our death for us.

  71. Jesus suffered hell for us so that we don't have to.

  72. Now Jesus calls us to die for him.

  73. Look back at verse 32.

  74. They were on their way up to Jerusalem with Jesus leading the way.

  75. Verse 33.

  76. We are going up to Jerusalem.

  77. The way that I go is also the way that you go.

  78. The path that I take is the path that you must take.

  79. We are going up to Jerusalem.

  80. We must be ready to die for him.

  81. Of course, the death of Jesus is unique.

  82. None of us can repeat that.

  83. That was a once and for all.

  84. But his way to the cross is the model and the pattern for my life and for your life.

  85. You say, I can't do that.

  86. I can't live like that.

  87. Well, listen.

  88. If Jesus suffered the ultimate suffering for us, hell itself,

  89. that means we can face any suffering for him knowing that the worst has been taken for us.

  90. And if Jesus died our death for us and was raised three days later to life,

  91. that means we can face even death for him knowing that we too will be raised to life with him for all eternity.

  92. Verse 33.

  93. We are going up to Jerusalem.

  94. My way is now your way.

  95. You know, the only reason why we are here this morning is because people in the past have understood what Jesus had done for them

  96. and were willing to die for him.

  97. Churches are never planted through comfort and safety.

  98. Churches are planted through suffering and dying.

  99. Of course, we may not die because of persecution in this country.

  100. We certainly will if we go to other countries.

  101. But you know what?

  102. Every time we face rejection or a little bit of hostility, perhaps from a friend or a family,

  103. whenever we're treated unfairly or misunderstood,

  104. all because we follow Jesus,

  105. don't we?

  106. Don't we suffer?

  107. When we give of ourselves to people,

  108. when we invest into their lives

  109. and give and give and give a little bit more,

  110. and then it's thrown back in your face,

  111. doesn't a little piece of us die?

  112. The way to plant churches

  113. is to follow the way to Jerusalem.

  114. To walk the road,

  115. to stand and be amazed

  116. that Jesus suffered for us.

  117. And in response,

  118. be ready to die for him.

  119. Second,

  120. Jesus becomes a slave for us,

  121. but calls us to be a servant for him.

  122. Jesus becomes a slave for us,

  123. but calls us to be a servant for him.

  124. Verse 35,

  125. James and John, the sons of Zebedee,

  126. came to him,

  127. Teacher,

  128. we want you to do for us

  129. whatever we ask.

  130. Well, clearly,

  131. they have not understood the call to come and die.

  132. Verse 36,

  133. what do you want me to do for you?

  134. Jesus asked.

  135. They replied,

  136. well,

  137. let one of us sit at your right

  138. and the other one sit at your left

  139. in your glory.

  140. Don't you identify with James and John?

  141. We all want the glory,

  142. don't we?

  143. without the suffering.

  144. Without the suffering.

  145. We want the prize,

  146. but not the pain.

  147. We don't want to come and die.

  148. But Jesus reminds us

  149. of the way in which we must follow.

  150. Verse 39,

  151. Jesus said to them,

  152. you will drink the cup I drink

  153. and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with.

  154. Not that they will endure the same thing,

  155. but he's saying to them,

  156. if you follow me,

  157. you will suffer for me.

  158. In fact,

  159. in just a few years from those words of Jesus,

  160. James would be executed by Herod.

  161. John would be banished to an island prison.

  162. They both came to see

  163. that the road to glory

  164. is always a way of suffering.

  165. And we need to understand that.

  166. We've got a kind of sanitized,

  167. happy version of Christianity

  168. where we don't like danger,

  169. we don't like upset,

  170. we don't like suffering.

  171. That can't possibly be the way.

  172. But look at my life,

  173. says Jesus.

  174. Let me show you

  175. what it's all about.

  176. Verse 44,

  177. he says to them,

  178. whoever wants to be first

  179. must be slave of all.

  180. For even the Son of Man

  181. did not come to be served,

  182. but to serve

  183. and to give his life

  184. as a ransom for many.

  185. I am the Son of Man,

  186. says Jesus.

  187. It was a title,

  188. a great prophetic title,

  189. one that meant

  190. the one with absolute power

  191. and supreme authority.

  192. Jesus is saying,

  193. I am God's King,

  194. the Creator of the universe,

  195. the Ruler of the universe.

  196. I look after all things,

  197. but I do not demand

  198. to be served by you.

  199. Instead,

  200. I am willing to become a slave

  201. and die for you.

  202. That's why I've come.

  203. I come from my high position

  204. to take the very lowest position.

  205. Why?

  206. Look at the end of verse 45.

  207. To give my life

  208. as a ransom for many.

  209. I give my life

  210. in exchange for your life.

  211. With arms stretched out

  212. on the cross,

  213. Jesus is saying,

  214. I freely sacrifice my life.

  215. I take your sin

  216. upon my life

  217. to liberate you.

  218. By becoming a slave

  219. who dies

  220. in place of us,

  221. Jesus sets us free

  222. from the consequences

  223. of our sin,

  224. from death

  225. and from hell itself.

  226. He sets us free

  227. to live a new,

  228. radical kind of life.

  229. Now Jesus calls us

  230. to serve Him.

  231. Look at verse 42.

  232. Verse 42.

  233. Jesus called them together

  234. and said,

  235. You know

  236. that those who are regarded

  237. as the rulers

  238. of the Gentiles,

  239. the politicians

  240. and the leaders,

  241. they lord it over them.

  242. And their high officials,

  243. the movers

  244. and the shakers,

  245. exercise authority

  246. over them.

  247. They want position

  248. and power,

  249. status and success,

  250. glory and honour.

  251. And they'll go to any length

  252. to get it.

  253. Verse 43.

  254. Not so with you.

  255. Not so with you.

  256. Instead,

  257. whoever wants to become great

  258. among you

  259. must be your servant.

  260. And whoever wants to be first

  261. must be slave

  262. of all.

  263. I can't do it.

  264. How can I be a servant

  265. like this?

  266. Well listen,

  267. if Jesus died

  268. as a slave for us

  269. and set us free

  270. for an eternal glory,

  271. that means

  272. we can give

  273. our life today

  274. whatever the cost

  275. to serve Him

  276. because

  277. we already

  278. have everything

  279. in Christ.

  280. Christ.

  281. We were singing

  282. about it.

  283. All I have

  284. is Christ.

  285. That's all we need

  286. so we can let go

  287. of everything else.

  288. He's given us

  289. everything.

  290. Churches are not

  291. planted

  292. because of

  293. clever strategies.

  294. Churches are planted

  295. because

  296. they learn

  297. to be servants.

  298. That means

  299. we don't demand

  300. our rights.

  301. We don't strive

  302. for status.

  303. We no longer

  304. crave our comfort

  305. and our securities.

  306. There's no longer

  307. any me.

  308. We become

  309. last.

  310. We become

  311. the lowest.

  312. Giving freely.

  313. Giving our life.

  314. What will that

  315. look like for us?

  316. Well,

  317. students,

  318. for those

  319. who are at

  320. college,

  321. that might

  322. mean thinking

  323. not what

  324. great position

  325. can I get

  326. at the end.

  327. What great

  328. big salary

  329. can I earn?

  330. But where

  331. can I go

  332. when I get

  333. my degree?

  334. What town

  335. is there

  336. that hasn't

  337. got a church?

  338. Or what

  339. place is

  340. struggling

  341. that I could

  342. go and live

  343. there and

  344. support and

  345. help them

  346. to plant

  347. a church?

  348. that's what

  349. it will

  350. mean.

  351. For those

  352. who are just

  353. a little bit

  354. older and

  355. perhaps have

  356. kids,

  357. the same

  358. applies.

  359. Am I

  360. ready to go?

  361. Leave the

  362. stability of my

  363. nice home?

  364. My nice

  365. school where my

  366. nice children

  367. go?

  368. And leave

  369. my nice

  370. friends and

  371. start all

  372. over again.

  373. Oh, but what

  374. about the

  375. kids?

  376. It wouldn't

  377. be fair to

  378. upset them.

  379. After all,

  380. we need to

  381. keep them

  382. settled.

  383. Our kids

  384. are the

  385. most adaptable

  386. creatures on

  387. the planet.

  388. They'll go

  389. anywhere.

  390. They'll learn

  391. another language

  392. quicker than

  393. you.

  394. They're not

  395. the problem.

  396. It's us.

  397. But what

  398. about those

  399. who are

  400. retired?

  401. Or thinking

  402. of retirement?

  403. settling down

  404. and spending

  405. their pension

  406. if they still

  407. have one?

  408. All those

  409. missed out

  410. holidays.

  411. Am I

  412. ready to

  413. invest it

  414. into the

  415. support of

  416. one or

  417. two people?

  418. All the

  419. free time

  420. I now

  421. have,

  422. will I

  423. give it

  424. to serve

  425. the local

  426. church?

  427. That's

  428. what it

  429. means for

  430. us all.

  431. The way

  432. to plant

  433. churches.

  434. is to

  435. follow the

  436. way of

  437. Jesus.

  438. To be

  439. amazed as

  440. we walk

  441. the road

  442. that Jesus,

  443. the King,

  444. the one who

  445. controls all

  446. things,

  447. became a

  448. slave for

  449. you and

  450. for me.

  451. And in

  452. response,

  453. that we

  454. would be

  455. ready to be

  456. a servant

  457. for him.

  458. third,

  459. Jesus gives

  460. sight to

  461. us,

  462. but calls

  463. us to

  464. follow him.

  465. Jesus gives

  466. sight to

  467. us,

  468. but calls

  469. us to

  470. follow him.

  471. Look at

  472. verse 46.

  473. Then they

  474. came to

  475. Jericho,

  476. and as

  477. his disciples

  478. together with

  479. a large

  480. crowd were

  481. leaving the

  482. city,

  483. a blind

  484. man,

  485. Bartimaeus,

  486. that is the

  487. son of

  488. Timaeus,

  489. was sitting

  490. by the

  491. roadside

  492. begging.

  493. He's a

  494. nobody,

  495. he's an

  496. outsider,

  497. nothing to

  498. offer,

  499. nothing to

  500. give,

  501. but yet he

  502. knows how

  503. to ask.

  504. Verse 47,

  505. when he

  506. heard that

  507. it was

  508. Jesus of

  509. Nazareth,

  510. he began

  511. to shout,

  512. Jesus,

  513. son of

  514. David,

  515. literally,

  516. king,

  517. or Messiah,

  518. have mercy

  519. on me.

  520. Many

  521. rebuked him

  522. and told him

  523. to be quiet.

  524. Shh,

  525. he doesn't

  526. want you.

  527. But he

  528. shouted all

  529. the more,

  530. son of

  531. David,

  532. Messiah,

  533. have mercy

  534. on me.

  535. He

  536. comes in

  537. absolute

  538. dependence,

  539. knowing he

  540. is helpless

  541. and hopeless.

  542. And look

  543. at the

  544. response of

  545. Jesus,

  546. verse 51.

  547. Look at

  548. what Jesus

  549. says in

  550. response,

  551. verse 51.

  552. What do

  553. you want

  554. me to

  555. do for

  556. you?

  557. Jesus

  558. asked him.

  559. It's the

  560. exact same

  561. question Jesus

  562. had asked

  563. the disciples

  564. a little

  565. earlier.

  566. but the

  567. request of

  568. Bartimaeus

  569. is so

  570. different.

  571. The blind

  572. man said,

  573. Rabbi,

  574. I want

  575. to see.

  576. Not,

  577. I want

  578. to have

  579. greatness

  580. and glory.

  581. Not,

  582. I want

  583. position and

  584. power.

  585. Not,

  586. I want

  587. comfort and

  588. security and

  589. a nice,

  590. comfortable,

  591. easy kind

  592. of life.

  593. I want

  594. to see.

  595. Jesus

  596. is the

  597. one who

  598. has come

  599. to give

  600. us sight.

  601. Yes,

  602. Bartimaeus

  603. is healed

  604. physically,

  605. but when

  606. Mark,

  607. the author

  608. here of

  609. this gospel,

  610. when he

  611. talks about

  612. the blind

  613. seeing,

  614. he is

  615. always

  616. talking about

  617. seeing

  618. who

  619. Jesus

  620. is,

  621. perceiving,

  622. understanding.

  623. Remember,

  624. Jesus'

  625. rebuke to

  626. these same

  627. disciples back

  628. in chapter

  629. 8,

  630. after all

  631. his teaching

  632. and after

  633. all the

  634. miracles they

  635. had seen

  636. and witnessed,

  637. what does he

  638. say to them?

  639. Do you

  640. still not

  641. see or

  642. understand?

  643. do you

  644. have eyes

  645. but fail

  646. to see?

  647. Jesus has

  648. come to

  649. give sight,

  650. to open up

  651. our blind

  652. eyes so

  653. that we

  654. might know

  655. and understand

  656. who Jesus

  657. is.

  658. that he's

  659. the one

  660. with absolute

  661. power and

  662. supreme

  663. authority,

  664. but became

  665. a suffering

  666. slave to

  667. set us

  668. free so

  669. that we

  670. can have

  671. life.

  672. Jesus

  673. came to

  674. give us

  675. sight and

  676. now Jesus

  677. calls us to

  678. follow him.

  679. Look at

  680. verse 52.

  681. Go,

  682. said Jesus,

  683. your faith

  684. has healed

  685. you.

  686. Healed

  687. is the

  688. same word

  689. there as

  690. saved.

  691. Physically

  692. he can

  693. see.

  694. Spiritually

  695. he can

  696. see.

  697. He

  698. understands

  699. who

  700. Jesus

  701. is.

  702. Immediately

  703. he received

  704. his sight

  705. and followed

  706. Jesus along

  707. the road

  708. because to

  709. see Jesus

  710. is to

  711. follow

  712. Jesus.

  713. To

  714. go,

  715. to know

  716. him is

  717. to go

  718. with him.

  719. We can't

  720. claim to

  721. have faith

  722. in Jesus

  723. but not

  724. follow

  725. Jesus.

  726. Look back

  727. at verse

  728. 49.

  729. Jesus

  730. stopped and

  731. he had

  732. said to

  733. Bartimaeus,

  734. call him.

  735. Verse 50,

  736. throwing his

  737. cloak aside

  738. he jumped

  739. to his

  740. feet and

  741. he came

  742. to Jesus.

  743. He was

  744. called

  745. and he

  746. came.

  747. But look

  748. how he

  749. came.

  750. He threw

  751. his cloak

  752. aside,

  753. perhaps the

  754. only possession

  755. this blind

  756. beggar had

  757. but symbolically

  758. he throws

  759. it to

  760. one side

  761. to follow

  762. Jesus.

  763. He has

  764. come to

  765. see that

  766. Jesus

  767. had given

  768. all of

  769. himself

  770. for him

  771. and now

  772. he is

  773. willing to

  774. give all

  775. of himself

  776. to Jesus.

  777. Look,

  778. if Jesus

  779. gave his

  780. life so

  781. that we

  782. may gain

  783. life in

  784. all its

  785. fullness

  786. now and

  787. for all

  788. eternity,

  789. that means

  790. we can

  791. let go

  792. of all

  793. that we

  794. have to

  795. follow him.

  796. if Jesus

  797. gave

  798. everything

  799. to us,

  800. that means

  801. we can

  802. let go

  803. of everything

  804. we have

  805. to follow

  806. him.

  807. We

  808. thank God

  809. that churches

  810. have been

  811. planted

  812. and the

  813. only way

  814. that we'll

  815. see more

  816. churches

  817. planted

  818. is to

  819. follow

  820. Jesus

  821. along

  822. the road.

  823. but maybe

  824. like me,

  825. you're just

  826. struggling

  827. to follow.

  828. Maybe

  829. this is

  830. all too

  831. much.

  832. Maybe

  833. you're

  834. worried

  835. about

  836. how much

  837. you will

  838. suffer.

  839. Maybe

  840. you're

  841. scared

  842. of

  843. where

  844. you'll

  845. go

  846. or where

  847. you'll

  848. end

  849. up.

  850. Maybe

  851. inside

  852. you're

  853. fighting

  854. the

  855. battle

  856. about

  857. the

  858. cost

  859. that

  860. is

  861. involved.

  862. To be

  863. honest,

  864. I don't

  865. really like

  866. this passage

  867. very much.

  868. It's a

  869. bit hard.

  870. Unlike

  871. the disciples

  872. at the

  873. very

  874. beginning,

  875. I'm

  876. afraid.

  877. I'm

  878. afraid

  879. to

  880. follow.

  881. Well,

  882. if that's

  883. you,

  884. we need

  885. to become

  886. like

  887. Bartimaeus,

  888. a blind

  889. beggar,

  890. hopeless,

  891. helpless,

  892. nothing to

  893. offer,

  894. nothing to

  895. give,

  896. except the

  897. simple cry,

  898. have mercy

  899. on me,

  900. I want

  901. to see.

  902. and when

  903. Jesus

  904. opens up

  905. our eyes,

  906. we see

  907. him in

  908. all his

  909. glory

  910. and in

  911. all his

  912. beauty.

  913. We begin

  914. to grasp

  915. as the

  916. Holy Spirit

  917. takes it

  918. and applies

  919. it to

  920. our lives.

  921. We see

  922. the

  923. sluffering

  924. slave on

  925. the cross

  926. who died

  927. for you

  928. and for

  929. me.

  930. And when

  931. it begins

  932. to capture

  933. our hearts

  934. and our

  935. minds,

  936. there is

  937. nothing

  938. we will

  939. not give.

  940. There is

  941. nowhere

  942. we will

  943. not go

  944. and there

  945. is no one

  946. we will

  947. not reach.

  948. Like

  949. Bartimaeus,

  950. we simply

  951. need to

  952. ask for

  953. sight

  954. and follow

  955. Jesus

  956. along the

  957. road.

  958. Let's

  959. pray.

  960. Lord,

  961. we

  962. struggle

  963. with

  964. these

  965. demands

  966. upon

  967. our

  968. life.

  969. we

  970. are

  971. afraid

  972. and

  973. we're

  974. scared

  975. of

  976. what

  977. it

  978. will

  979. mean

  980. to

  981. follow

  982. Jesus.

  983. And so

  984. afresh

  985. we ask

  986. that you

  987. would give

  988. us all

  989. sight,

  990. open up

  991. our eyes

  992. to see

  993. the beauty

  994. and the

  995. glory of

  996. who Jesus

  997. is,

  998. to help

  999. us not

  1000. understand,

  1001. not just

  1002. understand

  1003. with our

  1004. heads,

  1005. but to

  1006. know it

  1007. in our

  1008. hearts,

  1009. all that

  1010. Jesus was

  1011. willing to

  1012. do for

  1013. us,

  1014. to suffer

  1015. for us,

  1016. to become

  1017. a slave

  1018. for us,

  1019. so that

  1020. we might

  1021. have life.

  1022. Please

  1023. teach us

  1024. what it

  1025. is to

  1026. follow you

  1027. along the

  1028. road.

  1029. Not

  1030. for our

  1031. own glory,

  1032. not for

  1033. our honour,

  1034. but for

  1035. the fame

  1036. of Jesus

  1037. and for

  1038. his name

  1039. to be

  1040. known

  1041. in our

  1042. own local

  1043. communities,

  1044. in our

  1045. own

  1046. neighbourhoods,

  1047. in our

  1048. colleges and

  1049. schools,

  1050. across this

  1051. county,

  1052. across this

  1053. island,

  1054. and across

  1055. the world.

  1056. Lord,

  1057. please help

  1058. us.

  1059. We ask

  1060. this in

  1061. Jesus'

  1062. name.

  1063. Amen.

  1064. Amen.

  1065. We're

  1066. going to

  1067. bring our

  1068. time together

  1069. to

  1070. close through

  1071. this song

  1072. from heaven

  1073. you came,

  1074. helpless

  1075. babe,

  1076. which is a

  1077. song that

  1078. really helps

  1079. us to fix

  1080. our eyes

  1081. and our

  1082. attention

  1083. on Jesus

  1084. and in

  1085. particular

  1086. the suffering

  1087. slave

  1088. on the

  1089. cross

  1090. who died

  1091. for us.

  1092. And the

  1093. only right

  1094. response

  1095. is to

  1096. follow him,

  1097. to give

  1098. our lives

  1099. wherever he

  1100. may call us.

  1101. Let's stand

  1102. together as we

  1103. sing this and

  1104. make it the

  1105. prayer of our

  1106. hearts.

  1107. near

  1108. next

  1109. to

  1110. a

  1111. month

  1112. a

  1113. full

  1114. foot

  1115. up

  1116. to

  1117. come

  1118. to

  1119. our

  1120. feet

  1121. who

  1122. are

  1123. in

  1124. a

  1125. ¡N Reverend

  1126. chapter 10

  1127. bless you

  1128. are

  1129. going

  1130. to

  1131. see you

  1132. just

  1133. in

  1134. Jesus
