  1. One other thing I might say at this point as well, that in a talk like this, we're not going to be able to cover everything.

  2. And it would be good just to have an open time and for people to throw back questions.

  3. If you do have questions afterwards, please talk to me.

  4. But what we're going to be doing is over the next few weeks on our Wednesday, on our Gospel Community, our home group nights,

  5. we're going to have opportunity to think this through a bit more.

  6. So if you have questions and you want to think through it more, then come along on a Wednesday night

  7. and we'll be asking more about it and your opportunities to discuss and question.

  8. So, what is your position or your opinion on the proposed same-sex referendum?

  9. At the end of last year, our coalition government announced that they were going to hold a referendum to redefine marriage,

  10. which will include same-sex couples.

  11. Listen to the views of our Tornister, Eamon Gilmour.

  12. This is what he says.

  13. I believe that in certain key areas, our laws are out of step with public opinion.

  14. I don't believe, for example, that it should ever be the role of the state to pass judgment

  15. on whom a person falls in love with or whom they want to spend their life with.

  16. The right of gay couples to marry is, quite simply, the civil rights issue of this generation.

  17. And, in my opinion, its time has come.

  18. Very strong and persuasive words.

  19. So, what will you say when somebody asks you for your views?

  20. Yes, I think it's great.

  21. Everybody should be allowed to marry.

  22. It is a civil rights issue.

  23. Or, will you say, no, I don't agree with it.

  24. Marriage is just between a man and a woman.

  25. It's a biblical issue.

  26. Or, will you just try and avoid the question, keep your head down and stay quiet?

  27. You see, I think that if you haven't yet been asked, you will be asked,

  28. because this is a topic that is going to dominate much of our thinking in this coming year.

  29. And it's important that we are all able to give a well-informed answer.

  30. And, depending how you give that answer, it may mean your demotion at work or your promotion at work.

  31. It may mean that you lose friends or it may mean you gain friends.

  32. So, it is a critical issue and an important one that will affect all of us.

  33. But, this debate about marriage is nothing new.

  34. Jesus himself was confronted about his views on marriage.

  35. So, look at Mark's Gospel, chapter 10, verse 2.

  36. The reason we left this section out in our studies in Mark was because we wanted to look at it under this issue.

  37. So, look at verse 2 of chapter 10.

  38. Some Pharisees, the religious leaders, came and tested Jesus by asking,

  39. Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?

  40. So, there was an issue, a debate about marriage.

  41. And, while the question here is about divorce,

  42. Jesus' answer, I think, helps us to understand what God's design for marriage is

  43. and why we should follow his design for our life.

  44. So, it's not a new issue.

  45. So, first of all, the definition of marriage.

  46. Central to this debate is the whole issue of redefining what marriage is all about.

  47. Listen to this again, and it's on the screen.

  48. This comes from the Irish Council for Civil Liberties,

  49. the group who have been charged with presenting a case for same-sex marriage.

  50. They say this,

  51. The ICCL believes that everyone is entitled to equal treatment under the law

  52. and that no one should be discriminated against or denied access to services

  53. on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, civil status or family status.

  54. This includes equal access to the right to marry and found a family.

  55. Denying same-sex couples the right to marry runs contrary to the spirit of equality

  56. and non-discrimination protected by the Irish Constitution

  57. and by international human rights treaties to which Ireland is a party.

  58. Furthermore, the existing prohibition on marriage for same-sex couples

  59. unfairly discriminates against the section of Irish society,

  60. including the children in the families of same-sex couples

  61. who are otherwise entitled to equal protection

  62. before the law under the Irish Constitution.

  63. Again, it's very strong and very clear as to how they wish to redefine things.

  64. Now, while our Constitution doesn't actually define marriage,

  65. it is defined in law as between a man and a woman.

  66. So the proposal here is to change that.

  67. Now, when Jesus in Mark 10 is asked his opinion in marriage,

  68. he takes everybody back to God's design for marriage

  69. and I think that's where we should go in our discussion.

  70. It's not what I think or what you think,

  71. but what does God think?

  72. What's God's design?

  73. So look at verse 3.

  74. Jesus answers the question like this.

  75. Well, what did Moses command you?

  76. Well, they said,

  77. Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.

  78. Now, we'll come back to this in a minute because this is important.

  79. But notice where Jesus ends up.

  80. Look where he starts his discussion.

  81. Verse 6.

  82. But at the beginning of creation.

  83. So this is something foundational.

  84. He takes them right back to the very beginning.

  85. But at the beginning of creation,

  86. God made them male and female.

  87. For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother

  88. and be united to his wife,

  89. and the two will become one flesh,

  90. so they are no longer two but one.

  91. Now, that wasn't Jesus just making up something.

  92. This is a direct quote.

  93. And keep your finger in Mark 10 and go back to Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  94. This is a direct quote from Genesis.

  95. So this is God's order, God's design from the very beginning.

  96. In fact, it's the earliest text in all literature

  97. that actually defines or says something about marriage.

  98. So, chapter 1, verse 26.

  99. Then God said,

  100. Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,

  101. and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air

  102. and over the livestock, over all the earth,

  103. and over all the creatures that move along the ground.

  104. So God created man in his own image.

  105. In the image of God,

  106. He created him.

  107. Male and female,

  108. He created them.

  109. Now look at chapter 2, verse 24.

  110. This is where the male and the female come together.

  111. So chapter 2, verse 24,

  112. and it reads,

  113. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother

  114. and be united to his wife,

  115. and they will become one flesh.

  116. The man and his wife were both naked

  117. and they felt no shame.

  118. Now that's important, verse 25.

  119. They felt no shame.

  120. This was part of God's order,

  121. part of His design,

  122. and being together was good and right and beautiful.

  123. So, back to Mark 10.

  124. You see, this is not an invention of man.

  125. This is a gift from God to His creation.

  126. So when the Irish Council of Civil Liberties,

  127. when they say they want to redefine marriage,

  128. they're not actually changing Irish law.

  129. They are interfering with God's design

  130. and order for creation.

  131. So again, it's not about what you or I think.

  132. It's not about what the Irish law says.

  133. But it's what God's design and order says.

  134. Now I think that's very interesting

  135. because even the ICCL

  136. actually have limits on their definition.

  137. Even they have some kind of standard

  138. by which marriage should be contained.

  139. So I ask the question,

  140. why does their definition

  141. not include, say, something like polygamy?

  142. Why not have multiple wives and husbands?

  143. Who's to say we shouldn't?

  144. Or what about incest?

  145. And by that I mean marriage

  146. to someone within your own family.

  147. So a brother marries a brother

  148. or a sister marries a sister.

  149. Why not?

  150. Who's to say that's wrong?

  151. Who's deciding where the barrier should be?

  152. Or what about an age limit?

  153. Why do we have an age limit?

  154. Who decides that?

  155. You see, even those who are wanting to say,

  156. let's redefine it,

  157. they themselves have limits

  158. and they see that there actually are

  159. good limits and standards.

  160. But again, I want us to come back and say,

  161. it's not us who decide where those boundaries are.

  162. It is God who has defined marriage

  163. and it is for our good.

  164. So that's the first thing.

  165. The second is the disorder of marriage.

  166. You see, the discussion between Jesus

  167. and the religious leaders in Mark

  168. is really about submission to God's design.

  169. That's the key issue here.

  170. It's about submission to God's design.

  171. And that includes you and I

  172. in every area of life,

  173. not just marriage.

  174. So let's look at the issue again in verse 2.

  175. The question has come to Jesus.

  176. Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?

  177. Well, what did Moses command you?

  178. He replied.

  179. Well, they said,

  180. Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce

  181. and send her away.

  182. Now, it's important we've got to get the context here

  183. and what's happening.

  184. You see, society had become very patriarchal.

  185. It had become male-dominated.

  186. And it was all about husbands' rights.

  187. And it was little to do with the protection

  188. and the care of wives,

  189. which was at the very heart of God's design.

  190. The protection and care of wives

  191. was central to God's design.

  192. So husbands who had got fed up with their wives

  193. and they wanted to move in with somebody else down the road,

  194. well, they could leave them on the basis of,

  195. well, anything that they wanted to.

  196. They could say something like,

  197. well, you failed to live as a good wife in the house

  198. and to fulfil all your duties.

  199. You didn't please me as a wife.

  200. And on those basis,

  201. they could just dismiss their wife,

  202. go move in with somebody else,

  203. and the wife would be left to no rights at all.

  204. You see, marriage had become twisted.

  205. The husband was abusing his role

  206. and his wife had no rights.

  207. So to protect his wife,

  208. who was being neglected and abandoned,

  209. verse 4,

  210. Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce

  211. and send her away.

  212. But, verse 5,

  213. it was because your hearts were hard

  214. that Moses wrote you this law.

  215. You see, a law had to be introduced.

  216. Why?

  217. To protect the woman or wife

  218. from the sinful behaviour of the man or husband.

  219. Moses' law wasn't to say,

  220. oh, you know what, men, you can do and live however you please.

  221. No, it was all about caring for

  222. and protecting from

  223. those who were abusing marriage.

  224. So the real issue

  225. is they didn't like God's design for marriage.

  226. They wanted to live as they pleased.

  227. They wanted an opt-out clause

  228. and live and change their partner

  229. if they wanted to.

  230. And if they got fed up with their wife,

  231. they wanted any reason to leave.

  232. Now, when Jesus is addressing this issue,

  233. he doesn't redefine marriage.

  234. He takes them back to God's good design.

  235. So look at verse 7.

  236. For this reason,

  237. a man will leave his father and mother

  238. and be united to his wife.

  239. The implication there is

  240. is that husbands now have a responsibility.

  241. They've left their mother and father.

  242. He's left their care.

  243. And now he is given the responsibility

  244. to care for his wife,

  245. to protect his wife,

  246. to provide for his wife,

  247. to serve his wife,

  248. to love her

  249. in that relationship.

  250. But let's not lose sight

  251. of why they were wanting to change

  252. God's design for marriage.

  253. It's in verse 5.

  254. It was because your hearts

  255. were hard.

  256. In other words,

  257. they didn't like God's design.

  258. They wanted to create

  259. their own design.

  260. Now, when I think about that,

  261. I don't think any of us

  262. are any different.

  263. Because all of us

  264. rebel against God's design for life.

  265. We're not different.

  266. None of us like our Creator

  267. telling us how we should live our life.

  268. That's the history of the world.

  269. That's what happened

  270. to the first married couple,

  271. Adam and Eve.

  272. Read on in Genesis.

  273. As soon as they're married,

  274. they begin to go against God's design.

  275. And havoc is wrecked.

  276. So let's ask ourselves a few questions.

  277. Husbands,

  278. and that includes myself,

  279. do we love,

  280. do we care and protect our wives

  281. as we should?

  282. Have you ever sulked

  283. and got annoyed

  284. because your wife said,

  285. no, not tonight?

  286. Have you ever planned your day off

  287. so that you do things

  288. that you want to do

  289. without first taking into consideration

  290. the needs of your wife

  291. or your children?

  292. Have we ever looked

  293. at another woman lustfully?

  294. I know I have

  295. and a lot more.

  296. I fail to live up

  297. to God's good design.

  298. What about wives?

  299. Do you encourage

  300. and support your husbands

  301. as you should?

  302. Have you ever soaked

  303. and nagged

  304. until you get your own way?

  305. Or have you ever read

  306. a nice romantic novel

  307. and then imagined yourself

  308. in the arms

  309. of the hero and lover?

  310. You see,

  311. none of us live up

  312. to God's good design.

  313. Maybe you're not married.

  314. Maybe you're single.

  315. Do you live up

  316. to God's good design?

  317. Completely pure

  318. in your thoughts

  319. and your attitudes?

  320. You see,

  321. the big point is this.

  322. Whether we support

  323. same-sex marriage

  324. or whether we don't,

  325. all of us rebel

  326. against God's design

  327. in some way.

  328. Every one of us.

  329. We don't want,

  330. we want to live life

  331. my way.

  332. We want to define life

  333. so that it suits me

  334. and it fulfills

  335. my needs

  336. and my desires.

  337. Look at verse 5 again.

  338. It was because

  339. your hearts

  340. were hard

  341. that Moses

  342. had to write

  343. this law.

  344. it is because

  345. our hearts

  346. are hard

  347. that we want

  348. same-sex marriage.

  349. It's because

  350. our hearts

  351. are hard

  352. that we get

  353. annoyed

  354. with our wives.

  355. It's because

  356. our hearts

  357. are hard

  358. that we

  359. nag

  360. our husbands.

  361. So just as

  362. Aemon Gilmore

  363. needs to repent,

  364. repent,

  365. so I

  366. also need

  367. to repent.

  368. We all need

  369. to come back

  370. to God's

  371. good

  372. and perfect

  373. design.

  374. Which brings us

  375. to God's

  376. design for marriage.

  377. Let's look at this

  378. carefully.

  379. God's design

  380. for marriage

  381. is for our good.

  382. Firstly,

  383. male and

  384. female,

  385. verse 6.

  386. At the

  387. beginning of

  388. creation,

  389. God made

  390. them male

  391. and female.

  392. It's clear,

  393. it's obvious.

  394. That's how

  395. God made us.

  396. And these

  397. two sexes

  398. form the

  399. basis and

  400. the foundation

  401. of a married

  402. life.

  403. The man

  404. wasn't given

  405. a mirror image

  406. of himself.

  407. Instead,

  408. he was given

  409. the opposite.

  410. He was given

  411. a woman.

  412. This is the

  413. way God

  414. planned it.

  415. And let's

  416. remember that

  417. within marriage

  418. there is

  419. firstly

  420. equality.

  421. We're all

  422. equal in

  423. God's sight.

  424. Men

  425. are not

  426. greater than

  427. women.

  428. And women

  429. are not

  430. better than

  431. men.

  432. There is no

  433. inferiority,

  434. there is no

  435. superiority.

  436. We are

  437. equally loved

  438. and treasured

  439. by God,

  440. equal in

  441. value,

  442. equal in

  443. position before

  444. God,

  445. equal in

  446. worth.

  447. However,

  448. within that

  449. equality,

  450. there is

  451. complementarity.

  452. Men and

  453. women,

  454. in case you

  455. didn't notice,

  456. are different.

  457. Physically,

  458. we are

  459. different.

  460. Sexually,

  461. we are

  462. different.

  463. But the

  464. thing about

  465. that difference

  466. is,

  467. we complement

  468. each other.

  469. And for

  470. good reason.

  471. children.

  472. Because

  473. central to

  474. God's

  475. design for

  476. marriage is

  477. children.

  478. Having

  479. made male

  480. and female,

  481. God says in

  482. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 1:28

  483. 1 verse 28,

  484. this is the

  485. first command

  486. that God

  487. gives to

  488. people.

  489. He says to

  490. the man and

  491. the woman,

  492. God blessed

  493. them and

  494. said to

  495. them,

  496. be fruitful

  497. and increase

  498. in number.

  499. God bless

  500. him and

  501. God bless

  502. him and

  503. God bless

  504. him and

  505. have sex.

  506. Go make

  507. babies.

  508. And the

  509. only way to

  510. have children

  511. is by one

  512. man and

  513. one woman

  514. coming together.

  515. Physically and

  516. sexually we

  517. fit together.

  518. One was made

  519. with a penis,

  520. the other was

  521. made with a

  522. vagina.

  523. It's not just

  524. a biblical

  525. fact,

  526. this is a

  527. biological fact.

  528. Nature tells

  529. us what the

  530. right design is

  531. for life.

  532. We don't

  533. need to

  534. interfere with

  535. it.

  536. Two men

  537. and two women

  538. can't produce

  539. a child.

  540. So physically

  541. and sexually

  542. God made

  543. us distinct.

  544. He made

  545. us different.

  546. But through

  547. marriage we

  548. complement

  549. each other.

  550. This is part

  551. of God's

  552. good and

  553. beautiful design

  554. for us.

  555. God's

  556. design is so

  557. crystal clear.

  558. The man

  559. leaves his

  560. father, a

  561. male, and

  562. mother, a

  563. female, and

  564. is married or

  565. joined to his

  566. wife.

  567. He enters

  568. into a

  569. covenant

  570. relationship, a

  571. bond that

  572. unites them

  573. together.

  574. And this

  575. leads to,

  576. firstly, unity.

  577. Look at the

  578. end of verse

  579. eight.

  580. they become

  581. one flesh, so

  582. they are no

  583. longer two, but

  584. one.

  585. No longer

  586. two, but

  587. one.

  588. It's no longer

  589. about two

  590. individuals trying

  591. to get what they

  592. want from the

  593. other person.

  594. That's how many

  595. people exist within

  596. marriage.

  597. It's what I want

  598. and what I need.

  599. It's not about

  600. me or I, but

  601. now it becomes

  602. we and

  603. us.

  604. We are joined

  605. together in a

  606. mutual service of

  607. one another,

  608. supporting one

  609. another, caring

  610. for one another,

  611. fulfilling one

  612. another.

  613. And when that

  614. unity is broken

  615. by adding in

  616. somebody else into

  617. that relationship,

  618. either through

  619. adultery or

  620. through pornography,

  621. it becomes

  622. destructive and

  623. divisive.

  624. To add in

  625. another person

  626. ruins the

  627. marriage.

  628. This is to be

  629. an exclusive,

  630. special relationship

  631. between one man

  632. and one woman.

  633. And this is God's

  634. lifelong plan for

  635. us.

  636. Verse 9.

  637. Therefore,

  638. what God has

  639. joined together,

  640. let man not

  641. separate.

  642. You see, even in

  643. the design of us

  644. coming together,

  645. I say, well, I

  646. chose Kirstie,

  647. Kirstie chose me.

  648. In a sense,

  649. that's true.

  650. But I also

  651. believe, verse 9,

  652. what God has

  653. joined together.

  654. This is something

  655. that God works

  656. in our lives.

  657. So there is a

  658. deep unity.

  659. And there is also

  660. intimacy.

  661. Again, look at

  662. verse 8.

  663. It says,

  664. the two will

  665. become one

  666. flesh.

  667. You see,

  668. sex is not

  669. just about

  670. making babies.

  671. it's intended

  672. by God

  673. for intimacy.

  674. The coming

  675. together

  676. as one

  677. flesh

  678. is God's

  679. way to

  680. develop and

  681. to grow

  682. the marriage

  683. relationship.

  684. In marriage,

  685. we are to

  686. give our lives

  687. to each other,

  688. including

  689. our physical

  690. bodies.

  691. Not just for

  692. individual pleasure,

  693. not just to

  694. get out of it

  695. what I can get

  696. for myself

  697. and to

  698. please me.

  699. It's about

  700. mutual pleasure

  701. of service

  702. towards the

  703. other person.

  704. Now, people

  705. will often

  706. say,

  707. you know,

  708. the Bible

  709. is against

  710. sex.

  711. You're not

  712. allowed to

  713. have sex

  714. if you're

  715. a Christian.

  716. God doesn't

  717. allow it.

  718. Well,

  719. that's not

  720. true.

  721. Read your

  722. Bible.

  723. Read the

  724. Song of Songs

  725. tonight,

  726. men and

  727. women,

  728. husbands and

  729. wives.

  730. You see,

  731. the problem

  732. only comes

  733. when we

  734. take sex

  735. outside of

  736. God's design

  737. for marriage.

  738. When we

  739. do that,

  740. then it

  741. leads to

  742. emptiness

  743. and brokenness

  744. because what

  745. sex does

  746. is it binds

  747. people together.

  748. So to

  749. have multiple

  750. or other

  751. sexual

  752. relationships

  753. means that

  754. you are

  755. actually binding

  756. yourself,

  757. you're gluing

  758. yourself to

  759. another person

  760. and you

  761. can't break

  762. apart,

  763. you can't

  764. walk away

  765. from that

  766. without some

  767. part being

  768. broken,

  769. emotionally,

  770. psychologically,

  771. physically.

  772. You can

  773. read the

  774. reports

  775. yourself,

  776. it's all

  777. there.

  778. The facts

  779. say that

  780. it damages.

  781. Of course,

  782. God's grace

  783. is great

  784. enough to

  785. heal and

  786. to restore,

  787. but the

  788. point is

  789. that to

  790. live outside

  791. of God's

  792. design is

  793. not good

  794. for us.

  795. So if

  796. you are in

  797. a marriage,

  798. it's about

  799. unity,

  800. intimacy,

  801. intimacy,

  802. and if

  803. you are

  804. struggling

  805. within your

  806. marriage

  807. sexually,

  808. then I

  809. encourage you

  810. to talk

  811. to someone.

  812. You can

  813. talk to me

  814. if you're

  815. a man,

  816. you can

  817. talk to

  818. my wife,

  819. Kirsty,

  820. and ask

  821. what is

  822. God's

  823. design for

  824. us,

  825. because it

  826. is a

  827. vital part

  828. of our

  829. relationship

  830. together.

  831. The last

  832. part is

  833. this,

  834. a divine

  835. marriage,

  836. and perhaps

  837. this is the

  838. most important

  839. of all.

  840. God's design

  841. for marriage

  842. is clear,

  843. we've seen

  844. that,

  845. but let's

  846. not lose

  847. sight of

  848. the ultimate

  849. purpose of

  850. what marriage

  851. is to point

  852. to and to

  853. direct people

  854. to.

  855. The marriage

  856. between a

  857. man and a

  858. woman illustrates

  859. and pictures

  860. God's marriage

  861. towards us.

  862. And for

  863. this I want

  864. us to go

  865. to Ezekiel,

  866. which is,

  867. where is

  868. it?

  869. Isaiah,

  870. Jeremiah,

  871. Lamentations,

  872. Ezekiel.

  873. So it's

  874. kind of in

  875. the Bible,

  876. if somebody's

  877. got a page

  878. number there,

  879. could they,

  880. chapter 16,

  881. sorry,

  882. chapter 16,

  883. 842,

  884. 842,

  885. 842,

  886. and we're

  887. going to

  888. finish with

  889. this,

  890. 842,

  891. Ezekiel,

    Ezekiel 16 chapter mention

  892. chapter 16,

  893. page 842.

  894. Now what we

  895. have here is

  896. a picture,

  897. it's imagery,

  898. to show God's

  899. pursuit,

  900. God's loving

  901. pursuit,

  902. it's describing

  903. almost how the

  904. man pursues

  905. his woman

  906. to marry her.

  907. And so this is

  908. showing how God

  909. pursues us,

  910. his desire for us,

  911. his love for us,

  912. so that he might

  913. rescue us and

  914. bring us into

  915. the ultimate

  916. relationship ever,

  917. a relationship with

  918. him,

  919. where we find

  920. ultimate satisfaction

  921. and joy in

  922. every area of

  923. life.

  924. So as I read

  925. this through,

  926. just go with

  927. the picture,

  928. don't try and

  929. sort out all the

  930. different images,

  931. but just go with

  932. the picture and

  933. see it as an

  934. illustration of

  935. God's marriage

  936. towards us.

  937. We're going to

  938. pick it up in

  939. verse 4 and

  940. read through to

  941. verse 14.

  942. Here we go,

  943. chapter 16,

  944. verse 4.

  945. So on the day

  946. you were born,

  947. your cord was

  948. not cut,

  949. nor were you

  950. washed with

  951. water to make

  952. you clean,

  953. nor were you

  954. rubbed with

  955. salt or wrapped

  956. in clothes.

  957. No one looked

  958. on you with

  959. pity or had

  960. compassion enough

  961. to do any of

  962. these things for

  963. you.

  964. Rather you were

  965. thrown out into

  966. the open field,

  967. for on that day

  968. you were born

  969. you were despised.

  970. Then I passed

  971. by and saw you

  972. kicking about in

  973. your blood,

  974. and as you lay

  975. there in your

  976. blood I said

  977. to you,

  978. live.

  979. I made you

  980. grow like a

  981. plant of the

  982. field.

  983. You grew up

  984. and developed

  985. and became

  986. the most

  987. beautiful of

  988. jewels.

  989. Your breasts

  990. were formed

  991. and your hair

  992. grew,

  993. you who were

  994. naked and

  995. bare.

  996. Later I

  997. passed by

  998. and when I

  999. looked at you

  1000. and saw that

  1001. you were old

  1002. enough for love,

  1003. I spread the

  1004. corner of my

  1005. garment over you

  1006. and covered your

  1007. nakedness.

  1008. I gave you my

  1009. solemn oath and

  1010. entered into a

  1011. covenant with you,

  1012. declares the

  1013. sovereign Lord,

  1014. and you became

  1015. mine.

  1016. I bathed you

  1017. with water and

  1018. washed the blood

  1019. from you and

  1020. put ointments on

  1021. you.

  1022. I clothed you

  1023. with an embroidered

  1024. dress and put

  1025. leather sandals on

  1026. you.

  1027. I dressed you in

  1028. fine linen and

  1029. covered you with

  1030. costly garments.

  1031. I adorned you

  1032. with jewellery.

  1033. I put bracelets on

  1034. your arms and a

  1035. necklace round your

  1036. neck and I put a

  1037. ring in your nose,

  1038. earrings on your

  1039. ears and beautiful

  1040. crown on your

  1041. head.

  1042. So you were

  1043. adorned with

  1044. gold and silver.

  1045. Your clothes were

  1046. of fine linen and

  1047. costly fabric and

  1048. embroidered cloth.

  1049. Your food was

  1050. fine flour, honey and

  1051. olive oil.

  1052. You became very

  1053. beautiful and rose to

  1054. be a queen.

  1055. And your fame spread

  1056. among the nations on

  1057. account of your

  1058. beauty because the

  1059. splendour I had

  1060. given you made your

  1061. beauty perfect,

  1062. declares the

  1063. sovereign Lord.

  1064. It's wonderful

  1065. poetry.

  1066. It's a picture,

  1067. it's an image of

  1068. God's pursuit of

  1069. his people.

  1070. And the Lord Jesus

  1071. has made that a

  1072. reality for us.

1073. He has come to us

1074. in our sin, in all

1075. of our mess, in all

  1076. of our failure.

  1077. When we were

  1078. unlovable, he was

  1079. the one who loved

  1080. us.

  1081. He gave us not

  1082. just jewels and

  1083. fine clothes, but

  1084. he gave us his

  1085. life for us so

  1086. that we might

  1087. become beautiful

  1088. in his eyes.

  1089. He was the one

  1090. who took our

  1091. impurity from us.

  1092. He took all of

  1093. our sin and all

  1094. of our mess and

1095. he took it all on

  1096. himself and he

  1097. suffered in our

  1098. place.

  1099. He died for us

  1100. and in exchange of

  1101. our impurity, he

  1102. gives us his

  1103. purity so that we

  1104. might become

  1105. beautiful, treasured,

  1106. cared for, welcomed,

  1107. brought in to that

  1108. most beautiful of

  1109. relationships with

  1110. him.

  1111. That is the most

  1112. perfect marriage, God

  1113. to his people, and

1114. that is for all of

  1115. us.

  1116. He will never leave

  1117. us, he will never

  1118. forsake us, he will

  1119. never divorce us, he

  1120. will never drift and

  1121. give his love to

  1122. another.

  1123. His love is perfect,

  1124. perfect, it is intent,

  1125. it is true.

  1126. This is the divine

  1127. marriage, this is what

1128. he calls us all to

1129. live in and it is

  1130. only when we live

  1131. within that marriage

  1132. and in within his

  1133. design, life will be

  1134. good.

  1135. This is the true

  1136. marriage that we all

  1137. need.

  1138. Let's pray.

  1139. Amen.

  1140. Amen.

  1141. Amen.

  1142. Amen.

  1143. Our Father God, we

  1144. thank you for your

  1145. word, we thank you

1146. for how clear it is,

1147. but yet each one of

  1148. us find that we

  1149. struggle to live

  1150. under your design.

  1151. We confess and we

  1152. repent that all of

  1153. us have rebelled

  1154. against your design

  1155. in life in some

  1156. way or another.

  1157. And therefore we

  1158. need your grace.

  1159. We need your

  1160. healing.

  1161. We need your

  1162. love.

  1163. So please forgive

  1164. us and please

  1165. bring us to be

  1166. people who live

  1167. under your design.

  1168. I pray for every

  1169. marriage that is

  1170. represented here,

  1171. that you would

  1172. protect it, that

  1173. you would grow

  1174. their love for one

  1175. another, that you

  1176. would create unity

  1177. intimacy and

  1178. intimacy, that you

  1179. would bless them,

  1180. that you would bless

  1181. every family that is

  1182. represented here.

1183. And I pray for every

  1184. single person here, that

1185. you would help them to

  1186. live lives that are

  1187. pure and right.

1188. And we pray that they

1189. would live a life that

  1190. reflects your goodness,

1191. and that for all of us,

  1192. in whatever circumstance

1193. of life we may find

  1194. ourselves, that we

  1195. would find our

  1196. ultimate relationship

  1197. in Christ.

1198. The one who gave his

  1199. life for us.

1200. The one who is our

  1201. everything.

1202. The one who gives us

  1203. joy, peace and

  1204. fulfillment in ways

  1205. that nothing else

  1206. ever can.

1207. We thank you for what

  1208. you have done.

  1209. and please help us

  1210. to talk about this

  1211. issue to others,

  1212. graciously and in

  1213. love, without

  1214. superiority, but

  1215. submitting to your

  1216. good design.

  1217. We pray this in

  1218. Jesus' name.

  1219. Amen.

  1220. Amen.

  1221. Amen.

  1222. Amen.

  1223. Amen.

  1224. Amen.

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Amen.

  1227. Amen.

  1228. Amen.

  1229. Amen.

  1230. Amen.

  1231. Amen.

  1232. Amen.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Amen.

  1235. Amen.

  1236. Amen.
