  1. Okay, Genesis chapter 1 verse 26.

    Genesis 1:26

  2. Then God said,

  3. Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.

  4. So God created man in his own image.

  5. In the image of God, he created him.

  6. Male and female, he created them.

  7. And then chapter 2 verse 15.

  8. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

  9. And the Lord God commanded the man,

  10. You are free to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

  11. For when you eat of it, you will surely die.

  12. The Lord God said,

  13. It is not good for the man to be alone.

  14. I will make a helper suitable for him.

  15. Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air.

  16. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them.

  17. And whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.

  18. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air, and all the beasts of the field.

  19. But for Adam, no suitable helper was found.

  20. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep.

  21. And while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh.

  22. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

  23. The man said,

  24. This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.

  25. She should be called woman.

  26. For she was taken out of man.

  27. For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

  28. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

  29. Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.

  30. He said to the woman,

  31. Did God really say you must not eat from any tree in the garden?

  32. The woman said to the serpent,

  33. We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,

  34. but God did say you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden.

  35. You must not touch it, or you will die.

  36. You will not surely die, the serpent said to the woman,

  37. for God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened,

  38. and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

  39. When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye,

  40. and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.

  41. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

  42. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked,

  43. so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

  44. Thanks very much, Kim.

  45. So we're on our fourth talk on our series,

  46. God's Good Design for Life.

  47. The first talk, all these talks, by the way, are on the church website.

  48. You can look them up there,

  49. and other resources relating to the same theme are up there as well.

  50. The first talk that we looked at was just setting a foundation.

  51. We looked at Genesis as well, Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  52. and looked at God's design and order in creation.

  53. Then we looked at God's design for marriage.

  54. Last week we looked at God's design for family.

  55. And this week we're looking at God's design for sexuality,

  56. and in particular the issue of transgender.

  57. And we're looking at these issues, these subjects or topics,

  58. in the light of the discussions that will be taking place this year

  59. with the referendum to come in 2015 on marriage,

  60. the redefinition of marriage and the effects that may have on family and children.

  61. So we're just trying to get a big idea of God's design for life

  62. in terms of all of these things.

  63. Again, in preparation for this talk,

  64. I was challenged by it.

  65. It's something that I don't necessarily know a huge amount about,

  66. so please don't stone me during the talk

  67. if I say something completely out of hand,

  68. but do talk to me afterwards,

  69. or if you have any further questions,

  70. please do that afterwards.

  71. So let's pray and ask for God's help.

  72. Father, we thank you that you are a creator God,

  73. and not only are you a creator God,

  74. but you are a God who has spoken to us your creation.

  75. You have sought to communicate to us

  76. and to reveal something of who you are.

  77. To tell us about your plans for life

  78. and to tell us about our lives

  79. and the world in which we live.

  80. We thank you that your words,

  81. that your spoken words have been recorded for us

  82. in the Bible,

  83. and we thank you that we can trust it,

  84. and yet we ask for the power of your Holy Spirit

  85. to speak to us through it

  86. so that what we read in these verses

  87. would challenge us and shape us

  88. to live according to your good design

  89. and your good order for life.

  90. Please help us, Father.

  91. We want to be sensitive and careful,

  92. and yet we want to know your truth.

  93. So we pray, Father,

  94. that the word spoken will be spoken with grace

  95. and with compassion.

  96. And we ask for your help in Jesus' name.

  97. Amen.

  98. Amen.

  99. Well, what if your daughter came to you and said,

  100. I don't want to be a girl anymore.

  101. I want to be a boy.

  102. Or what if your teenage son came to you and said,

  103. I don't want to be called James.

  104. I want to be called Mandy.

  105. Maybe you've had that discussion with somebody else.

  106. Well, this was a recent issue discussed on Drive Time.

  107. That's the RTE radio program around tea time.

  108. Three young people were interviewed.

  109. These three young people were born with a female body

  110. and now identify themselves as male.

  111. All three now have boys' names

  112. and all three have begun to transition,

  113. which simply means they dress like boys

  114. and are beginning to take hormone treatment

  115. so that they look like boys.

  116. Here is how Tyler, who was born female,

  117. described it.

  118. For me, it was at a very young age.

  119. I was about five at the time.

  120. I tried to tell my parents,

  121. but they said it was just a phase.

  122. I told them I was in the wrong body,

  123. that I'm a boy

  124. and I don't have the right parts.

  125. Well, this is what is now called gender dysphoria

  126. or GDI, gender disorder identity.

  127. It's the term used to describe someone

  128. who's born as a male

  129. but now feels like a female

  130. or is born as a female

  131. and wants to be treated as a male.

  132. And presently, those who have gender dysphoria

  133. do not have their preferred gender recognised by the state,

  134. which means that their official documents

  135. such as birth certs, passports,

  136. can't be altered to reflect their preferred gender status.

  137. But change has been promised.

  138. When the Gender Recognition Bill comes into law,

  139. it will allow transgender people who are over 18,

  140. they're trying to reduce that down to 16

  141. so that they can have their preferred gender

  142. legally recognised by the state.

  143. So, for example, somebody who is born,

  144. a boy is called James,

  145. but in later years wants to be called Mandy,

  146. can have that then changed on their birth cert

  147. or on their passport.

  148. And if all this goes into law

  149. and if the referendum on the same-sex marriage is passed,

  150. then what that will mean in terms for children,

  151. it means that they can be raised

  152. not just by two men or two women,

  153. but by two men,

  154. one of whom was perhaps born as a woman.

  155. So it's a very complex issue,

  156. to say the least.

  157. But yet these are very real issues

  158. and there's no point in trying to stick our head in the sand

  159. and pretend that they aren't there.

  160. It's what young people are trying to cope with

  161. within our schools.

  162. It's what parents are trying to understand

  163. as their children ask the questions.

  164. So we need to be aware,

  165. but we also need to know

  166. what the Bible has to say on this issue

  167. so that we can be people

  168. who can communicate God's truth,

  169. but to do so with grace and compassion,

  170. with sensitivity and understanding.

  171. So with all that in mind,

  172. let me just go through a few definitions first.

  173. So as we go through the talk,

  174. you'll understand what we're talking about.

  175. So the first one there,

  176. transgender,

  177. is simply a person whose gender expression

  178. or identity

  179. is different from the sex they were born with.

  180. transvestite

  181. or transvestite

  182. is a person,

  183. male or female,

  184. who wears clothing

  185. not usually associated

  186. with their birth sex.

  187. Transsexual

  188. is a person

  189. who feels trapped

  190. in the wrong body

  191. or will describe themselves

  192. as being trapped in the wrong body

  193. and who changes their gender identity

  194. physically

  195. through hormone treatment

  196. or through an operation.

  197. And then there's transitioning.

  198. Transitioning is the process undertaken

  199. to change their gender identity

  200. in three different ways.

  201. Legally,

  202. as they change their name

  203. on their passport or birth cert.

  204. Physically,

  205. as they undergo hormone treatment

  206. and surgery.

  207. And socially,

  208. as they come out

  209. to their friends and family.

  210. So these are the issues.

  211. These are some of the understandings

  212. of what we're looking at this morning.

  213. And with all this in mind,

  214. we want to hear

  215. what God has to say

  216. about sexuality

  217. and in particular

  218. those with gender dysphoria.

  219. We're going to look at three things.

  220. First,

  221. created by God.

  222. Look at chapter 1,

  223. verse 1.

  224. Chapter 1,

  225. verse 1 of Genesis.

  226. So we're going to be looking

  227. at Genesis 1 to 3

  228. over these first few points.

  229. Genesis 1,

    Genesis 1:1

  230. verse 1.

  231. It reads,

  232. In the beginning,

  233. God.

  234. So before there was anything else,

  235. before there were any planets,

  236. or before there was any people,

  237. we were told there was God.

  238. So in the beginning,

  239. God created the heavens and the earth.

  240. Now the earth was formless

  241. and empty.

  242. Darkness was over the surface

  243. of the deep.

  244. The picture here

  245. is one of chaos

  246. and disorder

  247. at the very beginning.

  248. These words,

  249. formless,

  250. empty,

  251. and darkness

  252. give the sense of chaos

  253. and disorder.

  254. But then God

  255. spoke into that

  256. and he began to create

  257. and out of the disorder

  258. he brought about order

  259. and out of the chaos

  260. he brought about design.

  261. And we can read through chapter 1

  262. and see how that all happened.

  263. Now the pinnacle

  264. of that good order

  265. and that good design

  266. was the creation

  267. of a man and a woman.

  268. So in chapter 1,

  269. verse 26,

  270. we read,

  271. Then God said,

  272. Let us make man

  273. in our image,

  274. in our likeness.

  275. Verse 27,

  276. So God created man

  277. in his own image,

  278. in the image of God

  279. he created him.

  280. Male and female

  281. he created them.

  282. So while every person

  283. is created unique

  284. and every person here

  285. is different,

  286. we are created,

  287. God tells us,

  288. as either a male

  289. or a female.

  290. We are not created

  291. gender neutral.

  292. We're not created

  293. half man

  294. or half woman

  295. so that in the course of life

  296. we have to somehow

  297. choose

  298. which one

  299. we would like to be.

  300. No, God in his design

  301. and in his order

  302. has created us

  303. male and female.

  304. And when God made us,

  305. look at verse 31,

  306. God saw all that

  307. he had made

  308. and it was very good.

  309. He wasn't looking

  310. at his creation

  311. and thinking,

  312. oh, I've made a mistake

  313. or I'm not quite sure

  314. how this one

  315. is going to work out.

  316. He looked at his creation

  317. and he looked at man

  318. and woman

  319. and he said,

  320. this is very good.

  321. Now maybe you struggle

  322. with your sexuality

  323. and I think we all struggle

  324. with our sexuality.

  325. perhaps you identify

  326. with this gender dysphoria

  327. or maybe you know somebody

  328. who struggles with it.

  329. But here's the wonderful truth

  330. that whatever we may think

  331. about ourselves,

  332. whatever the world

  333. may tell us about ourselves,

  334. God says,

  335. our creator says this about us,

  336. you are very good.

  337. The way in which you've been made

  338. is very good.

  339. Keep your finger there

  340. in Genesis

  341. and jump to Psalm 139.

  342. Psalm 139,

  343. it's almost smack bang

  344. in the middle of your Bible.

  345. Psalm 139

  346. and verse 13.

  347. Here the psalmist is reflecting

  348. that he is not just a nobody

  349. but he is somebody

  350. who has been created

  351. wonderfully by God.

  352. Psalm 139 verse 13.

    Psalms 139:13

  353. Listen to these wonderful words.

  354. For you created

  355. my inmost being.

  356. You knit me together

  357. in my mother's womb.

  358. I praise you

  359. because I am fearfully

  360. and wonderfully made.

  361. Your works are wonderful.

  362. I know that full well.

  363. My frame was not hidden from you

  364. when I was made

  365. in the secret place.

  366. When I was woven together

  367. in the depths of the earth,

  368. your eyes saw

  369. my unformed body.

  370. All the days

  371. ordained for me

  372. were written in your book

  373. before one of them

  374. came to be.

  375. They're some of the most

  376. beautiful verses

  377. in the Bible

  378. because they are reminding us

  379. and telling us

  380. that God's creation of us

  381. is wonderful.

  382. We are not mistakes.

  383. We are not here by chance.

  384. We are made male or female

  385. and it's all part of God's

  386. amazing good design.

  387. And as part of God's

  388. good design,

  389. men and women

  390. are different.

  391. Socially,

  392. we're different.

  393. We act in different ways.

  394. And men are created

  395. physically and sexually

  396. different.

  397. Men are created

  398. with a penis.

  399. They have the ability

  400. to produce sperm.

  401. Women are created

  402. with a vagina

  403. and have the ability

  404. to produce an egg.

  405. So physically,

  406. we're different.

  407. Sexually,

  408. we're different.

  409. And part of that

  410. amazing order

  411. and design of God

  412. is that the male

  413. and female

  414. come together.

  415. So in verse 28

  416. of Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  417. sorry,

  418. go back to Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  419. In verse 28,

  420. having made

  421. man and woman,

  422. God says to them,

  423. verse 28,

  424. he blessed them

  425. and said to them,

  426. be fruitful

  427. and increase in number.

  428. So the context

  429. for this sexual union

  430. or this relationship

  431. is man and woman

  432. coming together,

  433. but the context

  434. for that is marriage.

  435. So chapter 2,

  436. verse 24.

  437. Well, let's read

  438. from verse 23.

  439. The man said,

  440. this is one of these

  441. great impassioned

  442. romantic verses.

  443. Maybe you could change

  444. it a little bit

  445. to make it a little bit

  446. more contemporary.

  447. So here we are.

  448. The man said,

  449. this is now bone

  450. of my bones

  451. and flesh of my flesh.

  452. She shall be called woman

  453. for she was taken

  454. out of man.

  455. For this reason,

  456. a man will leave

  457. his father and mother

  458. and be united

  459. to his wife

  460. and they will become

  461. one flesh.

  462. They will become

  463. one.

  464. And the man

  465. and his wife

  466. were both naked

  467. and they felt

  468. no shame.

  469. Do you see that last verse,

  470. verse 25?

  471. They were both naked

  472. and felt

  473. no shame.

  474. There is no hiding

  475. of their identity.

  476. There is no embarrassment

  477. in their nakedness.

  478. There is no unease.

  479. There is no struggle.

  480. There is no striving

  481. for a need to change.

  482. It is completely open

  483. and transparent.

  484. This is good

  485. and beautiful.

  486. God bringing man

  487. and woman together

  488. was a good design,

  489. a good purpose.

  490. No wonder

  491. Eden means

  492. delight.

  493. It's good.

  494. So,

  495. we are created

  496. by God.

  497. Second,

  498. we are also created

  499. in God's image.

  500. So,

  501. chapter 1,

  502. verse 27.

  503. God created man

  504. in his own image.

  505. In the image of God,

  506. he created him

  507. male and female.

  508. So,

  509. it's telling us there

  510. that something

  511. of God's likeness,

  512. something of God's image

  513. is reflected in us.

  514. We reflect something

  515. of who God is.

  516. but not physically.

  517. It's not as people

  518. look at us,

  519. they kind of physically,

  520. this is,

  521. I physically look like God.

  522. No,

  523. it's not that.

  524. But relationally,

  525. we reflect something

  526. of God relationally.

  527. And the clue for this

  528. comes in verse 26.

  529. Look at the beginning

  530. of verse 26.

  531. Then God said,

  532. let us

  533. make man

  534. in our image,

  535. in our likeness.

  536. So,

  537. do you see that?

  538. God is describing himself

  539. as an us.

  540. Let us

  541. make man

  542. in our image.

  543. And as we read

  544. through the Bible,

  545. it becomes clear

  546. that this God

  547. who was presented

  548. at the beginning

  549. is three persons,

  550. but yet just one God.

  551. It's what theologians

  552. have come to call

  553. the Trinity.

  554. God the Father,

  555. God the Son,

  556. God the Holy Spirit.

  557. That's the us,

  558. that's the our,

  559. that created man

  560. in his image.

  561. So,

  562. before anything else

  563. or anyone else

  564. was created,

  565. there was God.

  566. But get this,

  567. God was not alone.

  568. God was in

  569. a relationship

  570. with himself.

  571. He existed

  572. in a complete

  573. and perfect community

  574. of Father,

  575. Son,

  576. and Spirit.

  577. Each expressing love

  578. one to another.

  579. Each communicating

  580. one to another.

  581. Each serving,

  582. each giving.

  583. So,

  584. God didn't create people

  585. because God was

  586. somehow lonely

  587. and he needed

  588. somebody else.

  589. No,

  590. God was in

  591. a complete

  592. relationship

  593. with himself.

  594. So,

  595. when God

  596. created us,

  597. he created us

  598. to be a part

  599. of that community.

  600. He created us

  601. in his image

  602. and in his likeness

  603. so that we could

  604. relate to him,

  605. so that we could

  606. know him,

  607. enjoy him,

  608. and love him.

  609. He created us

  610. so that we

  611. could be complete

  612. in him.

  613. So,

  614. let's work

  615. this out.

  616. Let's see

  617. how this is

  618. true.

  619. So,

  620. when God

  621. made the man

  622. and the woman,

  623. what was the

  624. first thing

  625. he did?

  626. After he had

  627. made man

  628. and woman,

  629. what does he

  630. do?

  631. Well,

  632. look at

  633. chapter 1,

  634. verse 28.

  635. God blessed

  636. them

  637. and said

  638. to them.

  639. God begins

  640. to talk

  641. to them.

  642. He begins

  643. to relate

  644. to them

  645. because God

  646. is a relational

  647. God and

  648. we're made

  649. in his image

  650. and in his

  651. likeness and

  652. so we can

  653. relate to him.

  654. And God

  655. doesn't do this

  656. with any other

  657. part of his

  658. creation.

  659. Animals aren't

  660. talking to God.

  661. Plants aren't

  662. talking to God.

  663. They do not

  664. have that capacity

  665. to relate to God.

  666. We are unique

  667. in the created

  668. order to have

  669. a relationship

  670. with God,

  671. to talk to him.

  672. And so God

  673. has designed

  674. us as a male

  675. and a female

  676. so that we

  677. might be in

  678. a relationship

  679. with him.

  680. To join

  681. the Father

  682. and the Son

  683. and the Spirit

  684. in that

  685. complete community.

  686. That's what

  687. we were made

  688. for.

  689. Being in

  690. relationship

  691. with God

  692. is what

  693. fulfills us

  694. and satisfies

  695. us.

  696. Our relationship

  697. with God

  698. makes us

  699. complete.

  700. And that

  701. means then

  702. that we don't

  703. need to

  704. change our

  705. gender

  706. or our

  707. sexuality

  708. to find

  709. contentment

  710. and fulfilment.

  711. That means

  712. we don't need

  713. to change

  714. who we were

  715. born to be

  716. to fit in

  717. or to be

  718. accepted by

  719. other people.

  720. Those who

  721. struggle with

  722. gender dysphoria

  723. will often

  724. describe themselves

  725. in this way.

  726. They say that

  727. I'm trapped

  728. inside the

  729. wrong body.

  730. Which usually

  731. leads to

  732. perhaps living

  733. as a

  734. transvestite

  735. or taking

  736. action to

  737. become a

  738. transsexual.

  739. In other

  740. words,

  741. the only way

  742. to relate

  743. to themselves

  744. and to be

  745. able to

  746. relate to

  747. other people

  748. is to

  749. change

  750. their gender

  751. identity.

  752. But God

  753. has created

  754. us to join

  755. the ultimate

  756. relationship.

  757. He has

  758. created us

  759. to be in

  760. this complete

  761. perfect

  762. relationship.

  763. So we

  764. don't need

  765. to be

  766. tampering

  767. or changing

  768. God's

  769. design and

  770. order.

  771. God has

  772. designed each

  773. one of us

  774. as we are,

  775. male and

  776. female.

  777. And it's in

  778. relationship with

  779. our creator,

  780. God primarily,

  781. not with each

  782. other,

  783. but primarily

  784. in our

  785. relationship with

  786. God,

  787. that we find

  788. our joy

  789. and happiness.

  790. So whether

  791. we're single

  792. or whether

  793. we're married

  794. or whatever

  795. our struggle

  796. in life

  797. may be,

  798. it is in

  799. relationship

  800. with that

  801. perfect

  802. community,

  803. Father,

  804. Son and

  805. Spirit,

  806. that we

  807. find our

  808. joy and

  809. happiness.

  810. That is

  811. where we're

  812. complete.

  813. So we're

  814. created by

  815. God,

  816. we're created

  817. in the image

  818. of God,

  819. and then

  820. third,

  821. we are

  822. created new

  823. in Christ.

  824. Now the

  825. fact that

  826. we're having

  827. to talk

  828. about the

  829. subject of

  830. transgender

  831. means that

  832. God's created

  833. order and

  834. design has

  835. somehow fallen

  836. apart.

  837. The cogs in

  838. the wheel have

  839. become twisted,

  840. they're grinding

  841. against each

  842. other rather

  843. than going

  844. in the right

  845. way.

  846. And our

  847. experience of

  848. life,

  849. perhaps even

  850. for ourselves

  851. and within

  852. the communities

  853. in which we

  854. live,

  855. our experience

  856. today is so

  857. different to

  858. the original

  859. creation that

  860. we have

  861. just read.

  862. It's not

  863. like that

  864. anymore.

  865. It's

  866. different.

  867. So why is

  868. it different?

  869. Well,

  870. Genesis chapter

  871. three tells

  872. us what

  873. happened.

  874. We read

  875. from those

  876. verses in

  877. chapter three

  878. where the

  879. first man

  880. and the

  881. first woman

  882. rejected God's

  883. design for

  884. life.

  885. They rebelled

  886. against his

  887. good order

  888. and they

  889. began to

  890. replace the

  891. ultimate

  892. relationship

  893. with God

  894. for which

  895. they had

  896. and replace

  897. that relationship

  898. with God

  899. with other

  900. things and

  901. other people.

  902. They began

  903. to look to

  904. other places

  905. for their

  906. joy and

  907. their hope,

  908. their satisfaction

  909. and look at

  910. the consequences

  911. of when the

  912. first man and

  913. first woman

  914. rejected and

  915. rebelled.

  916. Look at

  917. verse seven

  918. of chapter

  919. three.

  920. it tells

  921. us there

  922. that the

  923. eyes of

  924. both of

  925. them were

  926. opened and

  927. they realised

  928. that they

  929. were naked

  930. and with

  931. the realisation

  932. they sewed

  933. fig leaves

  934. together and

  935. made coverings

  936. for themselves.

  937. It's the

  938. complete opposite.

  939. If you compare

  940. chapter three

  941. verse seven

  942. with chapter

  943. two verse

  944. twenty-five,

  945. it's the

  946. complete opposite.

  947. In verse

  948. twenty-five,

  949. they were

  950. naked and

  951. they felt

  952. no shame.

  953. In chapter

  954. three verse

  955. seven,

  956. upon

  957. rebelling,

  958. they were

  959. naked and

  960. now they're

  961. hiding and

  962. covering.

  963. They're no

  964. longer open

  965. and transparent

  966. with one

  967. another.

  968. Instead of

  969. accepting one

  970. another,

  971. instead of

  972. the pleasure

  973. of one

  974. another,

  975. they are now

  976. filled with

  977. guilt and

  978. shame,

  979. covering,

  980. hiding,

  981. trying to

  982. cover up.

  983. Their freedom

  984. has now

  985. been replaced

  986. with fear

  987. of one

  988. another.

  989. You see,

  990. because we

  991. have turned

  992. away from

  993. God,

  994. our whole

  995. life,

  996. the whole

  997. world,

  998. the whole

  999. universe,

  1000. has become

  1001. flawed,

  1002. including

  1003. our sexuality.

  1004. It has

  1005. become

  1006. disordered.

  1007. So,

  1008. you and I,

  1009. we don't

  1010. function in

  1011. a way that

  1012. fits in with

  1013. God's order

  1014. and God's

  1015. design.

  1016. that's why

  1017. we have

  1018. gender

  1019. dysphoria,

  1020. that's why

  1021. we have

  1022. same-sex

  1023. attraction,

  1024. that's why

  1025. we have

  1026. dysfunctional

  1027. marriages,

  1028. that's why

  1029. heterosexual

  1030. people struggle

  1031. with all

  1032. kinds of

  1033. issues.

  1034. So,

  1035. whoever we

  1036. are,

  1037. and however

  1038. we would

  1039. describe our

  1040. sexuality,

  1041. whether it's

  1042. transsexual,

  1043. homosexual,

  1044. or heterosexual,

  1045. we are all

  1046. of us,

  1047. we're no

  1048. different,

  1049. we are all

  1050. sexually flawed

  1051. and broken

  1052. people,

  1053. we don't

  1054. live and

  1055. behave and

  1056. act as

  1057. we should

  1058. do.

  1059. That's why

  1060. there is

  1061. the disorder,

  1062. but thankfully

  1063. God has made

  1064. it possible

  1065. for this

  1066. to be made

  1067. new.

  1068. Look at

  1069. 2 Corinthians

  1070. in the New

  1071. Testament,

  1072. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  1073. chapter 5.

  1074. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  1075. chapter 5.

  1076. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  1077. chapter 5.

  1078. You see,

  1079. God didn't

  1080. want to

  1081. leave us

  1082. as we

  1083. were,

  1084. living life

  1085. the way

  1086. that we

  1087. do,

  1088. breaking

  1089. our own

  1090. lives and

  1091. breaking

  1092. the lives

  1093. of one

  1094. another.

  1095. God

  1096. intervened,

  1097. the whole

  1098. story,

  1099. the whole

  1100. plan,

  1101. the whole

  1102. picture of

  1103. the Bible

  1104. is about

  1105. God coming

  1106. to us

  1107. through Jesus

  1108. Christ to

  1109. renew us

  1110. and to

  1111. restore us,

  1112. to bring

  1113. us back

  1114. to that

  1115. new

  1116. creation.

  1117. So in

  1118. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:15

  1119. chapter 5

  1120. verse 15

  1121. we read

  1122. this,

  1123. it's talking

  1124. about Jesus

  1125. and he,

  1126. that's Jesus

  1127. died for

  1128. all,

  1129. people like

  1130. you and

  1131. me,

  1132. people who

  1133. are broken

  1134. sexually,

  1135. he died

  1136. for all,

  1137. that those

  1138. who live

  1139. should no

  1140. longer live

  1141. for themselves,

  1142. for their

  1143. own desires,

  1144. their own

  1145. wants,

  1146. but for

  1147. him to

  1148. live for

  1149. Jesus who

  1150. died for

  1151. them and

  1152. was raised

  1153. again for

  1154. them.

  1155. Verse 17,

  1156. therefore,

  1157. if anyone

  1158. is in

  1159. Christ,

  1160. they are

  1161. a new

  1162. creation,

  1163. the old

  1164. has gone

  1165. and the

  1166. new

  1167. has come.

  1168. Jesus

  1169. Christ,

  1170. when he

  1171. walked on

  1172. the earth,

  1173. was the

  1174. perfect

  1175. human being.

  1176. He was

  1177. the one

  1178. who lived

  1179. all of

  1180. life as

  1181. it should

  1182. be.

  1183. He was

  1184. perfect and

  1185. pure in

  1186. his sexuality.

  1187. There was

  1188. no flaw

  1189. in his

  1190. sexuality.

  1191. And so

  1192. he came,

  1193. he was the

  1194. only one

  1195. who could

  1196. come to

  1197. deal with

  1198. our sexually

  1199. flawed and

  1200. broken

  1201. lives.

  1202. And part,

  1203. or the

  1204. way in

  1205. which he

  1206. ultimately

  1207. did that,

  1208. was to

  1209. take our

  1210. sin,

  1211. to take

  1212. our

  1213. failures,

  1214. our mess

  1215. ups,

  1216. our

  1217. brokenness

  1218. on

  1219. himself,

  1220. to

  1221. forgive us

  1222. of the

  1223. past,

  1224. to deal

  1225. with the

  1226. past,

  1227. and to

  1228. give us

  1229. a brand

  1230. new

  1231. beginning,

  1232. a new

  1233. way to

  1234. live life.

  1235. Verse 17

  1236. of chapter

  1237. 5,

  1238. therefore,

  1239. if anyone

  1240. is in

  1241. Christ,

  1242. they are

  1243. a new

  1244. creation,

  1245. the old

  1246. has gone,

  1247. the new

  1248. has come.

  1249. You see,

  1250. no matter

  1251. what our

  1252. sexual

  1253. orientation

  1254. may be,

  1255. all of

  1256. us,

  1257. all of

  1258. us in

  1259. this room

  1260. are called

  1261. to come

  1262. to Christ

  1263. because

  1264. Jesus is

  1265. the one

  1266. who's come

  1267. to redeem

  1268. our lives.

  1269. He's come

  1270. to bring

  1271. about a

  1272. new

  1273. creation

  1274. in our

  1275. lives,

  1276. to bring

  1277. order out

  1278. of the

  1279. disorder,

  1280. to bring

  1281. design out

  1282. of the

  1283. chaos,

  1284. to deal

  1285. with our

  1286. old life

  1287. and to

  1288. give us

  1289. a new

  1290. life.

  1291. I want

  1292. to finish

  1293. by sharing

  1294. a testimony.

  1295. This is

  1296. the story

  1297. of Mandy.

  1298. She explains

  1299. her old

  1300. life and

  1301. her new

  1302. creation.

  1303. Listen

  1304. carefully to

  1305. this story.

  1306. She describes

  1307. it like

  1308. this.

  1309. Growing

  1310. up as a

  1311. boy,

  1312. feeling I

  1313. was in

  1314. the wrong

  1315. body,

  1316. fascinated

  1317. with

  1318. women's

  1319. clothes,

  1320. the relief

  1321. of discovering

  1322. others who

  1323. felt the

  1324. same way,

  1325. increasing

  1326. cross-dressing

  1327. and joining

  1328. the transvestite

  1329. community,

  1330. a growing

  1331. sense that

  1332. perfect

  1333. fulfilment

  1334. could never

  1335. be achieved

  1336. without the

  1337. operation,

  1338. the counselling

  1339. which encouraged

  1340. this course

  1341. of action,

  1342. eventually

  1343. undergoing the

  1344. operation,

  1345. and the

  1346. triumphant

  1347. sense of

  1348. having arrived

  1349. with a

  1350. new identity

  1351. and a

  1352. new gender.

  1353. She goes

  1354. on having

  1355. been introduced

  1356. to Christ

  1357. and meeting

  1358. a Christian

  1359. community.

  1360. Mandy explains

  1361. how she was

  1362. now beginning

  1363. to regret

  1364. what she

  1365. had done.

  1366. She had

  1367. believed a

  1368. lie about

  1369. her identity.

  1370. She now

  1371. realised that

  1372. what she

  1373. had done

  1374. had been

  1375. an act

  1376. of rebellion

  1377. against

  1378. her creator.

  1379. She had

  1380. now confessed

  1381. her sin

  1382. to God

  1383. and was

  1384. beginning

  1385. to renounce

  1386. in her

  1387. heart

  1388. all that

  1389. it involved.

  1390. Her

  1391. pastor

  1392. counselled

  1393. her and

  1394. spoke to

  1395. her.

  1396. He said

  1397. to her,

  1398. whatever

  1399. your past,

  1400. whatever

  1401. you are

  1402. now,

  1403. male or

  1404. female,

  1405. what matters

  1406. is who

  1407. you are

  1408. in Christ.

  1409. As far

  1410. as I am

  1411. concerned,

  1412. God has

  1413. intervened in

  1414. your life

  1415. and he

  1416. has placed

  1417. you in

  1418. Christ.

  1419. He now

  1420. gives you

  1421. your identity.

  1422. This is

  1423. who you

  1424. are.

  1425. This is

  1426. therefore

  1427. how I

  1428. regard you.

  1429. If God

  1430. has accepted

  1431. you,

  1432. so do

  1433. I.

  1434. Her

  1435. pastor

  1436. continues

  1437. the story.

  1438. He says

  1439. we began

  1440. to notice

  1441. changes.

  1442. The

  1443. makeup

  1444. became

  1445. less

  1446. obvious.

  1447. Feminine

  1448. dresses

  1449. were making

  1450. way for

  1451. trousers

  1452. and loose

  1453. jumpers.

  1454. Hesitantly,

  1455. I began

  1456. to pray

  1457. that Mandy

  1458. might consider

  1459. a change

  1460. back to

  1461. the male

  1462. lifestyle.

  1463. It was

  1464. such a

  1465. huge step.

  1466. Did I

  1467. dare to

  1468. suggest to

  1469. Mandy that

  1470. I was

  1471. thinking this

  1472. way?

  1473. Well,

  1474. true to

  1475. form,

  1476. at our

  1477. next

  1478. meeting,

  1479. Mandy

  1480. herself

  1481. raised

  1482. the subject.

  1483. Just

  1484. 18 months

  1485. after her

  1486. baptism,

  1487. Mandy

  1488. became

  1489. James,

  1490. reverting

  1491. to the

  1492. name

  1493. his

  1494. parents

  1495. given

  1496. him

  1497. at

  1498. birth.

  1499. In

  1500. the

  1501. following

  1502. month,

  1503. she

  1504. made

  1505. preparations

  1506. at the

  1507. hospital,

  1508. and 15

  1509. months

  1510. after that,

  1511. James

  1512. met a

  1513. young lady

  1514. and got

  1515. married.

  1516. Therefore,

  1517. if anyone

  1518. is in

  1519. Christ,

  1520. they are a

  1521. new creation.

  1522. The old

  1523. has gone,

  1524. the new

  1525. has come.

  1526. that story

  1527. may finish

  1528. well,

  1529. but the

  1530. wonderful

  1531. news is

  1532. that even

  1533. though that

  1534. process,

  1535. that

  1536. transformation

  1537. may take

  1538. time,

  1539. listen to

  1540. these words,

  1541. for those

  1542. who come

  1543. to Christ,

  1544. for those

  1545. who are

  1546. the Lord's

  1547. glory,

  1548. are being

  1549. transformed

  1550. into

  1551. his

  1552. likeness.

  1553. We are

  1554. being

  1555. transformed

  1556. into

  1557. Christ's

  1558. likeness

  1559. every

  1560. day.

  1561. as God

  1562. does

  1563. his

  1564. work.

  1565. All

  1566. those

  1567. who are

  1568. in

  1569. Christ

  1570. are

  1571. a

  1572. new

  1573. creation.

  1574. Let's

  1575. pray.

  1576. Father,

  1577. we stand

  1578. back amazed

  1579. at your

  1580. created

  1581. order,

  1582. and your

  1583. design of

  1584. this

  1585. universe,

  1586. but

  1587. especially

  1588. we are

  1589. amazed at

  1590. the way

  1591. in which

  1592. you have

  1593. created

  1594. us as

  1595. human

  1596. beings,

  1597. so unique,

  1598. so different,

  1599. and you

  1600. look down

  1601. on each

  1602. one and

  1603. say you

  1604. are very

  1605. good,

  1606. fearfully

  1607. and

  1608. wonderfully

  1609. made.

  1610. God

  1611. and

  1612. we

  1613. have

  1614. God

  1615. and

  1616. we

  1617. have

  1618. followed

  1619. your

  1620. order

  1621. or

  1622. design,

  1623. and

  1624. therefore

  1625. we are

  1626. people who

  1627. need

  1628. Christ.

  1629. We

  1630. thank you

  1631. that through

  1632. Jesus

  1633. we find

  1634. that new

  1635. creation,

  1636. that new

  1637. beginning,

  1638. the past

  1639. being dealt

  1640. with,

  1641. the future

  1642. being made

  1643. bright.

  1644. we

  1645. thank you

  1646. that those

  1647. who trust

  1648. in you

  1649. are now

  1650. treated

  1651. as God's

  1652. own child,

  1653. and even

  1654. with all

  1655. our struggles,

  1656. and even

  1657. with all

  1658. of our

  1659. issues,

  1660. you are

  1661. continually

  1662. gracious

  1663. to us,

  1664. day by

  1665. day,

  1666. transforming

  1667. us to

  1668. be more

  1669. like

  1670. Christ.

  1671. We

  1672. thank you

  1673. too that

  1674. one day

  1675. we will

  1676. be in

  1677. the new

  1678. creation,

  1679. where we

  1680. will no

  1681. longer

  1682. struggle

  1683. with any

  1684. gender

  1685. issues,

  1686. we will

  1687. no longer

  1688. struggle

  1689. with our

  1690. sexuality,

  1691. we will

  1692. no longer

  1693. struggle

  1694. with anything,

  1695. for we

  1696. will be

  1697. as you

  1698. intend

  1699. us to

  1700. be.

  1701. We

  1702. look forward

  1703. to that,

  1704. and we

  1705. thank you

  1706. that you

  1707. have made

  1708. it all

  1709. possible

  1710. through

  1711. Jesus.

  1712. We

  1713. praise you

  1714. in Jesus'

  1715. name.

  1716. Amen.

  1717. words

  1718. that I

  1719. think

  1720. pick up

  1721. on that

  1722. verse

  1723. has gone,

  1724. the new

  1725. has come.

  1726. I once

  1727. was lost

  1728. in darkness

  1729. night,

  1730. yet thought

  1731. I was

  1732. lost.

  1733. I was

  1734. lost.

  1735. I was

  1736. lost.

  1737. I was

  1738. lost.

  1739. I was

  1740. lost.

  1741. I was

  1742. lost.

  1743. I was

  1744. lost.

  1745. I was

  1746. lost.
