  2. We're reading from Romans chapter 9, which is on page 1135 in the Red Bibles.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  3. So page 1135.

  4. Romans chapter 9.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  5. Starting in verse 1.

  6. I speak the truth in Christ.

  7. I am not lying.

  8. My conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit.

  9. I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.

  10. For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,

  11. those of my own race, the people of Israel.

  12. Theirs is the adoption of sons.

  13. Theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law,

  14. the temple worship and the promises.

  15. Theirs are the patriarchs.

  16. And from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised.

  17. Amen.

  18. It is not as though God's word had failed, for not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.

  19. Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham's children.

  20. On the contrary, it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.

  21. In other words, it is not the natural children who are God's children,

  22. but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring.

  23. For this was how the promise was stated.

  24. At the appointed time, I will return and Sarah will have a son.

  25. Not only that, but Rebecca's children had one and the same father, our father Isaac.

  26. Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad,

  27. in order that God's purpose in election might stand,

  28. not by works, but by him who calls,

  29. she was told,

  30. the older will serve the younger,

  31. just as it is written,

  32. Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.

  33. Well, if the end of that reading troubled you,

  34. it's been troubling me all week,

  35. so we need to pray and ask for God's help.

  36. It is written,

  37. Jacob I loved,

  38. but Esau I hated.

  39. Father, we confess that your word does speak truth.

  40. It tells us about you,

  41. and it tells us about ourselves.

  42. And sometimes it is hard for us to grasp and understand,

  43. and so this morning we pray,

  44. would you please pour out your spirit upon us,

  45. so that our minds understand what is difficult in your word.

  46. But we also ask that you would pour your spirit into our hearts,

  47. so that we accept the things that you say,

  48. and we pray that this would change our lives,

  49. so that we love you more,

  50. and that we love others more,

  51. especially that we would love those who do not yet know the Lord Jesus.

  52. Father, please be gracious to us this morning.

  53. And speak to us afresh,

  54. through your word,

  55. for it is truth,

  56. and it is good for us.

  57. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  58. Amen.

  59. Well, just over a year ago,

  60. the news broke of a very tragic farming accident.

  61. You probably remember it.

  62. Three members of the Spence family,

  63. the father and two sons,

  64. died in an attempt to rescue each other

  65. when one had fallen into a slurry tank.

  66. Knowing the dangers,

  67. but without a second thought,

  68. one followed the other

  69. to try and save their father.

  70. Their actions revealed their heart.

  71. They had a deep love for each other.

  72. They were willing to lose their life

  73. in an attempt to save the life of another.

  74. Now, Paul has that same kind of heart too.

  75. Look at verse 1.

  76. He says,

  77. As I speak the truth in Christ,

  78. I have something really important to tell you.

  79. I'm not lying.

  80. My conscience confirms it

  81. in the Holy Spirit,

  82. in the Spirit.

  83. This is serious.

  84. I have great sorrow

  85. and unceasing anguish

  86. in my heart.

  87. Well, what is it that's burdening his heart?

  88. What is it that's troubling him?

  89. Well, look at verse 3.

  90. He says,

  91. For I could wish

  92. that I myself

  93. were cursed

  94. and cut off from Christ

  95. for the sake of my brothers,

  96. those of my own race,

  97. the people of Israel.

  98. Do you see what he's saying in verse 3?

  99. He says,

  100. I am willing to go to hell.

  101. I would be willing to be cut off from Christ

  102. if it means my people become Christians.

  103. I would be ready, he's saying,

  104. to have the gift of eternal life

  105. taken away from me

  106. if it means that somebody from my family

  107. gets eternal life.

  108. Looking back on that farming tragedy,

  109. we might think it crazy

  110. for somebody to jump into a slurry tank

  111. and lose their life.

  112. But the thing is,

  113. when you have a big heart,

  114. when you see your loved ones in trouble,

  115. you will do anything.

  116. We're going to look at four big things

  117. that flow from this text this morning.

  118. And the first big one is this.

  119. Christians long for other people

  120. to become Christians.

  121. You see, this is what's Paul's great desire.

  122. His big longing is that his own people

  123. become Christians.

  124. Look at chapter 10 and verse 1.

  125. He says,

  126. Brothers,

  127. my heart's desire

  128. and my prayer to God for the Israelites

  129. is that they may be saved.

  130. Or chapter 11, verse 14.

  131. He says,

  132. It's my hope

  133. that I may somehow

  134. arouse my own people to envy

  135. and save some of them.

  136. Now, if you're a Christian,

  137. you will identify

  138. with Paul's heart

  139. because there is no greater agony,

  140. there is no greater pain

  141. or heartache

  142. than to have friends

  143. or family

  144. who do not yet know

  145. and love the Lord Jesus.

  146. Look again what he says

  147. in chapter 9, verse 2.

  148. He says,

  149. I have great sorrow

  150. and unceasing anguish

  151. in my heart.

  152. I long

  153. that my mum

  154. or dad

  155. or maybe it's your sister

  156. or maybe it's one of your own children

  157. or maybe you're thinking of a friend

  158. that you work with

  159. and it's your longing

  160. and your desire

  161. and your heartache

  162. for them

  163. to become

  164. Christians.

  165. You see,

  166. this is

  167. a serious matter.

  168. Go back to chapter 2

  169. and verse 5.

  170. It's a serious matter.

  171. It's weighing

  172. on his heart

  173. because

  174. it has an eternal consequence.

  175. Romans chapter 2, verse 5.

    Romans 2:5

  176. He's already spoken about this.

  177. Romans 2, verse 5.

    Romans 2:5

  178. Because

  179. of our stubbornness,

  180. because of our unrepentant heart,

  181. we're storing up wrath

  182. against ourselves

  183. for the day of God's wrath

  184. when his righteous judgment

  185. will be revealed.

  186. Verse 16.

  187. This will take place

  188. on the day

  189. when God will judge

  190. men's secret thoughts

  191. through Jesus Christ

  192. as my gospel declares.

  193. Do you see?

  194. It's a serious matter.

  195. And with that in mind,

  196. our heart's desire

  197. is that people

  198. would come to know

  199. the joy

  200. and the beauty

  201. of the gospel.

  202. that people

  203. would see

  204. that in Jesus,

  205. which is what

  206. Romans 1 through to 8

  207. has been telling us,

  208. that in Jesus

  209. there is forgiveness,

  210. that there's peace

  211. with God,

  212. that we can have

  213. a brand new beginning,

  214. that we can be welcomed

  215. and treasured

  216. as God's children

  217. and be given

  218. the guarantee

  219. of eternal life.

  220. of course,

  221. Paul's wish

  222. in verse 3

  223. of chapter 9,

  224. his wish

  225. that he could be

  226. cut off from Christ,

  227. he knows

  228. and we know

  229. that he can't do that.

  230. It is just simply

  231. expressing

  232. what we all feel

  233. as we think about

  234. our friends

  235. and our family

  236. who are not yet Christians.

  237. You see,

  238. there is nothing

  239. more important

  240. in this life

  241. than to be

  242. a follower

  243. of Jesus Christ.

  244. Don't you long

  245. for the day?

  246. Hasn't your heart

  247. ached?

  248. Haven't you

  249. shed tears

  250. for people

  251. who don't yet

  252. follow Jesus?

  253. Christians

  254. always long

  255. for other people

  256. to become

  257. Christians.

  258. The second

  259. big thing

  260. that we want

  261. to take

  262. from this

  263. this morning

  264. is that people

  265. who don't

  266. become Christians

  267. can't blame

  268. God.

  269. People who

  270. don't become

  271. Christians

  272. can't blame

  273. God.

  274. You see,

  275. while we may

  276. desperately

  277. want

  278. to become

  279. Christians

  280. or want

  281. others

  282. to become

  283. Christians,

  284. we can never

  285. blame God

  286. if they don't.

  287. It's not

  288. God's fault.

  289. Look at

  290. verse 4.

  291. Chapter 9.

  292. Here Paul

  293. is looking

  294. at the

  295. privileges

  296. and the

  297. opportunities

  298. that his

  299. own people

  300. have had.

  301. Verse 4.

  302. He says,

  303. theirs

  304. is the

  305. adoption

  306. of sons.

  307. It's talking

  308. about the

  309. privileged

  310. relationship

  311. that they

  312. had with

  313. God.

  314. There's

  315. the divine

  316. glory.

  317. In other

  318. words,

  319. they had

  320. known God's

  321. presence come

  322. down amongst

  323. his people.

  324. There's the

  325. covenants.

  326. They knew

  327. about God's

  328. commitment to

  329. them.

  330. They had the

  331. receiving of

  332. the law that

  333. God had spoken

  334. to them and

  335. had given

  336. them his

  337. very word.

  338. They had the

  339. temple worship

  340. and the

  341. promises.

  342. The promises

  343. of Jesus

  344. to come and

  345. the gospel

  346. that was to

  347. come.

  348. There's,

  349. verse 5,

  350. are the

  351. patriarchs and

  352. from them

  353. is traced

  354. the human

  355. ancestry of

  356. Christ who

  357. is God

  358. over all

  359. forever

  360. praised.

  361. Amen.

  362. You see,

  363. they've been

  364. given every

  365. opportunity

  366. possible,

  367. including the

  368. fact that

  369. Jesus is

  370. one of their

  371. own people

  372. and they

  373. could trace

  374. his family

  375. line all

  376. the way

  377. through.

  378. But even

  379. though they

  380. had heard

  381. the gospel,

  382. even though

  383. they'd had

  384. the promises

  385. of it all,

  386. even though

  387. they have

  388. this rich

  389. history and

  390. heritage,

  391. they still

  392. do not

  393. love the

  394. Lord Jesus.

  395. Perhaps

  396. there's someone

  397. in your

  398. family who

  399. has heard

  400. many times,

  401. but still

  402. they are not

  403. believers.

  404. believers.

  405. Maybe you're

  406. like that.

  407. Maybe you're

  408. here and

  409. you've heard

  410. the truth

  411. many times,

  412. but yet you

  413. still don't

  414. believe.

  415. Well, if we

  416. don't believe,

  417. and as much

  418. as it may

  419. weigh on

  420. our hearts,

  421. we can never

  422. turn round

  423. and point the

  424. finger and say

  425. it's God's

  426. fault,

  427. he's failed,

  428. he's let us

  429. down.

  430. Look at

  431. verse 6,

  432. because he

  433. says this,

  434. it is not

  435. as though

  436. God's word

  437. had failed.

  438. God has

  439. not stopped

  440. working.

  441. The gospel

  442. does not

  443. fail.

  444. You see,

  445. people become

  446. Christians not

  447. just when they

  448. hear the good

  449. news,

  450. but when they

  451. also combine

  452. it with

  453. faith.

  454. again,

  455. look at the

  456. pattern we

  457. have in

  458. verse 4.

  459. He's listing

  460. all the

  461. privileges,

  462. all the

  463. opportunities.

  464. They have

  465. this and

  466. they have

  467. that.

  468. And we

  469. could say

  470. where they

  471. went to

  472. church,

  473. they've had

  474. the Bible,

  475. they took

  476. communion,

  477. they were

  478. taught in

  479. Sunday school,

  480. they went

  481. here,

  482. they went

  483. there.

  484. But look

  485. how this

  486. list of

  487. privileges

  488. finishes in

  489. verse 5.

  490. It says,

  491. and from

  492. them is

  493. traced the

  494. ancestry of

  495. Christ.

  496. He doesn't

  497. say Christ

  498. is theirs,

  499. or that

  500. they have

  501. Christ,

  502. he simply

  503. just says

  504. Christ came

  505. from them.

  506. In other

  507. words,

  508. Jesus doesn't

  509. belong to

  510. them,

  511. and they

  512. don't belong

  513. to him,

  514. because they

  515. have never

  516. ever joined

  517. themselves in

  518. faith or by

  519. faith to

  520. Jesus.

  521. Despite all

  522. the privileges

  523. and all the

  524. opportunities,

  525. they have

  526. never responded

  527. in faith and

  528. trusted Jesus.

  529. You see,

  530. we can have

  531. all the

  532. opportunities

  533. and all the

  534. privileges,

  535. but it will

  536. count for

  537. nothing until

  538. there is

  539. faith.

  540. So people

  541. who don't

  542. become

  543. Christians

  544. can't

  545. blame

  546. God.

  547. The third

  548. big

  549. thing we

  550. want to

  551. learn this

  552. morning is

  553. this,

  554. that becoming

  555. a Christian

  556. is always

  557. God's work

  558. and not

  559. our own.

  560. It's always

  561. something God

  562. does,

  563. not something

  564. we do.

  565. You see,

  566. even though we

  567. may fail to

  568. respond as

  569. we should,

  570. even though

  571. God in

  572. his goodness

  573. has given

  574. opportunity

  575. after opportunity,

  576. he doesn't

  577. stop making

  578. people Christians.

  579. He still

  580. keeps on

  581. working in

  582. people's lives.

  583. That's the point

  584. of verse 6,

  585. it's not as

  586. though God's

  587. word had

  588. failed.

  589. So two

  590. things from

  591. this we want

  592. to learn.

  593. First,

  594. becoming a

  595. Christian

  596. is dependent

  597. on God's

  598. gracious

  599. promise.

  600. Becoming a

  601. Christian is

  602. dependent on

  603. God's

  604. gracious

  605. promise.

  606. Let's

  607. read verse

  608. 6 again.

  609. It is not

  610. as though

  611. God's word

  612. had failed,

  613. for not

  614. all who

  615. are descended

  616. from Israel

  617. are Israel.

  618. Now,

  619. that sounds

  620. confusing,

  621. that last

  622. little statement,

  623. but this is

  624. what he's

  625. saying.

  626. Just because

  627. you've heard

  628. the good news

  629. about Jesus,

  630. just because

  631. you've had

  632. this privilege

  633. and this

  634. background,

  635. doesn't mean

  636. to say that

  637. you will

  638. automatically

  639. be a

  640. Christian.

  641. So,

  642. how do you

  643. become a

  644. Christian?

  645. Well,

  646. read on,

  647. verse 7,

  648. Nor because

  649. they are his

  650. descendants are

  651. they all

  652. Abraham's

  653. children.

  654. On the

  655. contrary,

  656. it is through

  657. Isaac that

  658. your offspring

  659. will be

  660. reckoned.

  661. Now,

  662. again,

  663. it's confusing,

  664. it's difficult

  665. to get our

  666. heads around

  667. it,

  668. but one way

  669. to help us

  670. to do this

  671. is to think

  672. back to the

  673. story in

  674. Genesis where

  675. we read about

  676. the beginning

  677. of Israel

  678. and Abraham

  679. and his

  680. first children.

  681. Because in

  682. that story in

  683. Genesis we

  684. read that

  685. Abraham had

  686. two sons.

  687. The first

  688. son he

  689. called

  690. Ishmael.

  691. The second

  692. son he

  693. called Isaac,

  694. that's being

  695. referred to

  696. here in

  697. verse 7.

  698. They're both

  699. physical

  700. descendants of

  701. Abraham.

  702. Abraham is

  703. their dad.

  704. They both,

  705. if you like,

  706. had the same

  707. opportunities,

  708. the same

  709. privileges.

  710. However,

  711. only one of

  712. them belonged

  713. to the true

  714. people of

  715. God.

  716. Only one,

  717. if you like,

  718. became a

  719. Christian and

  720. that was

  721. Isaac.

  722. Why?

  723. Because God

  724. had given

  725. the promise

  726. of salvation

  727. to one

  728. but not to

  729. the other.

  730. look at

  731. verse 8.

  732. In other

  733. words,

  734. it is not

  735. the natural

  736. children who

  737. are God's

  738. children,

  739. but it is

  740. the children

  741. of promise

  742. who are

  743. regarded as

  744. Abraham's

  745. offspring.

  746. The true

  747. people of

  748. God or

  749. people who

  750. become

  751. Christians

  752. are those

  753. who are

  754. dependent on

  755. God's

  756. gracious

  757. promise to

  758. us.

  759. it is

  760. never about

  761. our

  762. privileged

  763. position

  764. before

  765. him.

  766. You see,

  767. some people

  768. think,

  769. like the

  770. Jewish people

  771. here in

  772. this passage,

  773. that it is

  774. all about

  775. position,

  776. it is all

  777. about

  778. privilege.

  779. So people

  780. could say,

  781. oh well I am

  782. a Protestant

  783. or I am

  784. a Catholic

  785. or I am

  786. a Baptist,

  787. but the

  788. point is it

  789. does not

  790. matter what

  791. your pedigree

  792. is,

  793. it does not

  794. matter what

  795. your position

  796. is,

  797. salvation

  798. only comes

  799. to us

  800. because

  801. God

  802. promises

  803. it.

  804. Look at

  805. verse 9,

  806. for this

  807. is how

  808. the promise

  809. was stated,

  810. at that

  811. appointed

  812. time I

  813. will return

  814. and Sarah

  815. will have

  816. a son.

  817. Again,

  818. if we are

  819. to go back

  820. into that

  821. story,

  822. we remember

  823. that Abraham

  824. and his

  825. wife Sarah

  826. at this

  827. time were

  828. very,

  829. very old.

  830. Sarah

  831. was well

  832. past the

  833. age of

  834. having

  835. children.

  836. It was

  837. physically

  838. and

  839. biologically

  840. impossible

  841. for her

  842. to have

  843. a child.

  844. But God

  845. had made

  846. a promise

  847. to them

  848. and said

  849. that I'm

  850. going to

  851. come back

  852. and at

  853. that time

  854. when I

  855. return

  856. you will

  857. have a

  858. child

  859. because

  860. what was

  861. impossible

  862. for Sarah

  863. suddenly became

  864. possible

  865. through God's

  866. promise.

  867. And this

  868. is illustrating

  869. the fact

  870. that salvation

  871. is only

  872. possible

  873. because of

  874. God's

  875. promise

  876. to us,

  877. not because

  878. of our

  879. privileged

  880. position.

  881. In other

  882. words,

  883. becoming a

  884. Christian

  885. is always

  886. God's

  887. work.

  888. And this

  889. is repeated

  890. again,

  891. but in a

  892. slightly

  893. different way.

  894. Becoming a

  895. Christian is

  896. not just

  897. dependent on

  898. God's

  899. gracious

  900. promise,

  901. it's

  902. dependent on

  903. God's

  904. gracious

  905. choice.

  906. Look at

  907. verse 10.

  908. Not only

  909. that, he

  910. continues,

  911. but Rebekah's

  912. children had

  913. one and

  914. the same

  915. father,

  916. our father

  917. Isaac.

  918. You see,

  919. as we follow

  920. the story

  921. through of

  922. Abraham and

  923. Sarah and

  924. the two

  925. children,

  926. in this

  927. case,

  928. Isaac,

  929. well, we

  930. learn that

  931. Isaac also

  932. had two

  933. sons.

  934. In fact,

  935. these two

  936. sons were

  937. twins.

  938. They were

  939. called Esau

  940. and Jacob.

  941. So if

  942. Isaac had

  943. received the

  944. promise of

  945. salvation,

  946. does that

  947. mean his

  948. children will

  949. also have

  950. the automatic

  951. right to

  952. salvation?

  953. Well, look

  954. what it says

  955. in verse 11.

  956. Yet,

  957. before the

  958. twins were

  959. born,

  960. or had

  961. done anything

  962. good or

  963. bad,

  964. in order

  965. that God's

  966. purpose in

  967. election might

  968. stand, or

  969. to put it

  970. this way,

  971. in order that

  972. God's purpose

  973. might be

  974. driven by

  975. his choice.

  976. Not by

  977. works,

  978. but by

  979. him who

  980. calls people.

  981. She was

  982. told the

  983. older will

  984. serve the

  985. younger.

  986. God

  987. made a

  988. choice.

  989. And I

  990. know we

  991. find that

  992. hard to

  993. take in.

  994. I know

  995. we're

  996. struggling to

  997. hear that.

  998. But

  999. according to

  1000. God's

  1001. purpose,

  1002. he chose

  1003. between the

  1004. two boys,

  1005. between the

  1006. two twins,

  1007. he chose

  1008. one and

  1009. not the

  1010. other to

  1011. receive his

  1012. salvation.

  1013. Verse 13,

  1014. just as it

  1015. is written,

  1016. Jacob I

  1017. loved,

  1018. but Esau

  1019. I hate

  1020. it.

  1021. What?

  1022. Are you

  1023. sure that's

  1024. what it

  1025. says?

  1026. I thought

  1027. God loved

  1028. everybody.

  1029. What does

  1030. the great

  1031. verse say?

  1032. That God

  1033. loved the

  1034. world.

  1035. how can

  1036. God

  1037. hate

  1038. someone?

  1039. Well,

  1040. the sense

  1041. is something

  1042. like this,

  1043. that Jacob

  1044. I have

  1045. chosen,

  1046. but Esau

  1047. I've

  1048. rejected.

  1049. Jesus

  1050. said the

  1051. same kind

  1052. of thing.

  1053. Keep your

  1054. finger there

  1055. in Romans

  1056. 9 and go

  1057. back to

  1058. John

    John 6 chapter mention

  1059. chapter 6.

  1060. John's

  1061. gospel

  1062. chapter 6.

  1063. John's

  1064. gospel

  1065. chapter 6

  1066. verse 37.

  1067. This is

  1068. Jesus

  1069. speaking

  1070. about those

  1071. who will

  1072. come to

  1073. him,

  1074. those who

  1075. will be

  1076. Christians.

  1077. John

    John 6:37

  1078. chapter 6

  1079. verse 37.

  1080. Jesus

  1081. says all

  1082. that the

  1083. father

  1084. gives

  1085. me

  1086. will

  1087. come

  1088. to

  1089. me

  1090. and

  1091. whoever

  1092. comes

  1093. to

  1094. me

  1095. I

  1096. will

  1097. never

  1098. drive

  1099. away.

  1100. Verse

  1101. 39.

  1102. And this

  1103. is the

  1104. will

  1105. of him

  1106. who sent

  1107. me,

  1108. that I

  1109. shall

  1110. lose

  1111. none

  1112. of all

  1113. that he

  1114. has

  1115. given

  1116. me,

  1117. but raise

  1118. them up

  1119. at the

  1120. last day.

  1121. God's

  1122. will,

  1123. God's

  1124. purpose,

  1125. God's

  1126. choice to

  1127. call people

  1128. to himself.

  1129. And that's

  1130. what Paul is.

  1131. He's essentially

  1132. saying the same

  1133. thing here.

  1134. in other

  1135. words,

  1136. God has

  1137. chosen to

  1138. give his

  1139. saving

  1140. love to

  1141. some

  1142. and not

  1143. to others.

  1144. And we

  1145. may think,

  1146. well,

  1147. if God

  1148. made a

  1149. choice like

  1150. this,

  1151. maybe it's

  1152. because

  1153. Jacob

  1154. must have

  1155. been a

  1156. better boy

  1157. when he

  1158. was growing

  1159. up.

  1160. Or maybe

  1161. it was

  1162. because

  1163. God

  1164. knew that

  1165. one day

  1166. Jacob

  1167. would

  1168. trust

  1169. in

  1170. God

  1171. and he

  1172. knew

  1173. how he

  1174. was going

  1175. to turn

  1176. out and

  1177. that's

  1178. why he

  1179. chose

  1180. him.

  1181. Well,

  1182. it's got

  1183. nothing to

  1184. do with

  1185. those things.

  1186. It's got

  1187. nothing to

  1188. do with

  1189. our

  1190. character.

  1191. Look at

  1192. what it

  1193. says in

  1194. verse 11.

  1195. This is

  1196. Romans 9

    Romans 9:11

  1197. verse 11.

  1198. Yet

  1199. before

  1200. the twins

  1201. were born,

  1202. before they

  1203. were born,

  1204. or had

  1205. done anything

  1206. good or

  1207. bad,

  1208. before they

  1209. even had an

  1210. opportunity

  1211. to come

  1212. running in

  1213. and say

  1214. something nice

  1215. or to

  1216. throw a

  1217. tantrum,

  1218. God made

  1219. his choice.

  1220. It wasn't

  1221. as if God

  1222. looked down

  1223. and said,

  1224. oh,

  1225. Jacob is

  1226. going to

  1227. be a

  1228. good boy,

  1229. I'm going

  1230. to choose

  1231. him,

  1232. or Esau

  1233. isn't going

  1234. to believe

  1235. in me,

  1236. so I

  1237. won't

  1238. choose

  1239. him.

  1240. No,

  1241. the point

  1242. is this,

  1243. that becoming

  1244. a Christian

  1245. depends on

  1246. God's

  1247. gracious

  1248. choice of

  1249. us,

  1250. not our

  1251. character,

  1252. not about

  1253. who I

  1254. am.

  1255. Becoming a

  1256. Christian is

  1257. always

  1258. God's

  1259. work.

  1260. And the

  1261. fourth

  1262. thing that we

  1263. want to take

  1264. from this

  1265. is this,

  1266. that although

  1267. these things

  1268. we're struggling

  1269. with,

  1270. and I know

  1271. you've got

  1272. questions,

  1273. and I know

  1274. there's lots

  1275. of puzzles

  1276. that we're

  1277. trying to

  1278. work out

  1279. here,

  1280. but if we

  1281. try and

  1282. work all

  1283. those things

  1284. out,

  1285. in some

  1286. sense we'll

  1287. get bogged

  1288. down.

  1289. And what

  1290. we need to

  1291. try and do

  1292. is to

  1293. accept and

  1294. to go with

  1295. it,

  1296. because if

  1297. we hear what

  1298. God is saying

  1299. to us,

  1300. it will

  1301. change our

  1302. lives in

  1303. an incredible

  1304. way.

  1305. It will

  1306. change our

  1307. lives in

  1308. an incredible

  1309. way.

  1310. Three things

  1311. that this

  1312. will change

  1313. our lives.

  1314. The first

  1315. is this,

  1316. it creates

  1317. humility.

  1318. It creates

  1319. humility.

  1320. You see,

  1321. if God has

  1322. made me a

  1323. Christian,

  1324. that means

  1325. there is

  1326. nothing in

  1327. my life

  1328. that I can

  1329. point to

  1330. and say,

  1331. God made

  1332. me a

  1333. Christian

  1334. because,

  1335. or God

  1336. chose me

  1337. because I

  1338. was a

  1339. good boy.

  1340. If you're

  1341. a Christian,

  1342. it's not

  1343. because of

  1344. who you

  1345. are or

  1346. what you've

  1347. done,

  1348. or because

  1349. you've

  1350. decided to

  1351. do something,

  1352. it's simply

  1353. because God

  1354. chose to

  1355. give his

  1356. love to

  1357. you.

  1358. have a

  1359. look back

  1360. in

  1361. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  1362. chapter 7.

  1363. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  1364. chapter 7

  1365. and verse

  1366. 7.

  1367. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 7:7

  1368. 7,

  1369. verse 7.

  1370. Deuteronomy

  1371. The Lord

  1372. did not

  1373. set his

  1374. affection

  1375. on you

  1376. and choose

  1377. you because

  1378. you were

  1379. more numerous

  1380. than all

  1381. the other

  1382. peoples,

  1383. for you

  1384. were the

  1385. fewest of

  1386. all peoples.

  1387. In other

  1388. words,

  1389. he didn't

  1390. choose you

  1391. because of

  1392. anything

  1393. about you,

  1394. but,

  1395. verse 8,

  1396. it was

  1397. because the

  1398. Lord loved

  1399. you.

  1400. You see,

  1401. the question

  1402. here is

  1403. not what

  1404. about

  1405. everybody

  1406. else.

  1407. The amazing

  1408. thing is,

  1409. is that

  1410. why would

  1411. God love

  1412. me?

  1413. Why would

  1414. he love

  1415. me?

  1416. That's

  1417. what's

  1418. amazing.

  1419. And if

  1420. we can

  1421. grasp that,

  1422. then it

  1423. takes away

  1424. all notions

  1425. of superiority.

  1426. That means

  1427. I can never

  1428. ever look

  1429. down on

  1430. somebody and

  1431. say,

  1432. I'm better

  1433. than you

  1434. because I'm

  1435. a Christian

  1436. or because

  1437. I chose

  1438. to follow

  1439. or because

  1440. God saw

  1441. something

  1442. beautiful in

  1443. me.

  1444. It just

  1445. creates

  1446. humility.

  1447. It makes

  1448. me love

  1449. other people

  1450. and serve

  1451. them and

  1452. care for

  1453. them in

  1454. the same

  1455. way in

  1456. which God

  1457. did that

  1458. unconditionally

  1459. for me.

  1460. So first,

  1461. it creates

  1462. humility.

  1463. Second,

  1464. it brings

  1465. about

  1466. security.

  1467. You see,

  1468. if God

  1469. has made

  1470. me a

  1471. Christian,

  1472. then salvation

  1473. is not

  1474. dependent

  1475. on me.

  1476. If I

  1477. chose to

  1478. become a

  1479. Christian,

  1480. if it was

  1481. about me,

  1482. then that

  1483. means I

  1484. can choose

  1485. not to be

  1486. a Christian.

  1487. So I can

  1488. kind of jump

  1489. in and be

  1490. a Christian

  1491. and then

  1492. decide at a

  1493. later point

  1494. not to

  1495. be a

  1496. Christian.

  1497. Now,

  1498. I don't

  1499. know about

  1500. you,

  1501. but I've

  1502. got an

  1503. issue about

  1504. that because

  1505. I choose

  1506. to sin

  1507. every single

  1508. day.

  1509. I choose

  1510. to disobey.

  1511. I choose

  1512. to ignore

  1513. God's

  1514. word.

  1515. So am I

  1516. in or am I

  1517. out because

  1518. of my

  1519. choices?

  1520. But if I

  1521. understand that

  1522. it is God

  1523. who chose

  1524. me,

  1525. then my

  1526. salvation is

  1527. not dependent

  1528. on how good

  1529. I am or

  1530. how bad

  1531. I am,

  1532. but God

  1533. has promised

  1534. to me.

  1535. He chose

  1536. me.

  1537. And that

  1538. means I'm

  1539. secure forever

  1540. no matter

  1541. if I

  1542. failed or

  1543. whether I've

  1544. been a

  1545. good boy.

  1546. Romans 8

    Romans 8:38

  1547. verse 38.

  1548. This is why

  1549. he can say

  1550. this.

  1551. Romans 8

    Romans 8:38

  1552. verse 38,

  1553. for I am

  1554. convinced that

  1555. neither death

  1556. nor life,

  1557. neither angels

  1558. nor demons,

  1559. neither the

  1560. present nor the

  1561. future,

  1562. nor powers,

  1563. neither heights

  1564. nor depth,

  1565. nor anything

  1566. else in all

  1567. creation,

  1568. will be able

  1569. to separate

  1570. us from the

  1571. love of God

  1572. that is in

  1573. Christ Jesus

  1574. our Lord.

  1575. Why will we

  1576. not be

  1577. separated?

  1578. Because of

  1579. the work God

  1580. has done in

  1581. our lives.

  1582. And then the

  1583. last thing that

  1584. it brings about

  1585. is it leads

  1586. to responsibility.

  1587. If I am a

  1588. Christian,

  1589. then this

  1590. truth will

  1591. change my

  1592. heart and

  1593. give me an

  1594. incredible love

  1595. for other

  1596. people who

  1597. are not yet

  1598. Christians.

  1599. That's how

  1600. this text all

  1601. started in

  1602. verse 3.

  1603. As Paul

  1604. looked in at

  1605. his own

  1606. heart, the

  1607. great sorrow

  1608. and unceasing

  1609. anguish that

  1610. he had, how

  1611. he wishes

  1612. that he could

  1613. be cut off

  1614. from Christ

  1615. so that

  1616. others would

  1617. become

  1618. Christians.

  1619. Christians.

  1620. And here's

  1621. the wonderful

  1622. thing, that

  1623. if you are

  1624. a Christian,

  1625. God has

  1626. chosen you

  1627. and God

  1628. has called

  1629. you to be

  1630. his witness

  1631. where you

  1632. are amongst

  1633. those people

  1634. who are not

  1635. yet Christians.

  1636. Maybe you're

  1637. the only one

  1638. who is a

  1639. Christian at

  1640. this time in

  1641. your family.

  1642. perhaps you're

  1643. the only one

  1644. who believes

  1645. when you go

  1646. into your

  1647. workplace.

  1648. Maybe you're

  1649. the only

  1650. Christian in

  1651. your neighbourhood.

  1652. God has

  1653. chosen you

  1654. and God

  1655. has called

  1656. you and

  1657. he's called

  1658. me so that

  1659. we would be

  1660. his witness

  1661. placed in the

  1662. middle of all

  1663. those people

  1664. so that

  1665. through you

  1666. they can hear

  1667. the good

  1668. news and

  1669. respond in

  1670. faith and

  1671. become

  1672. Christians

  1673. to.

  1674. It is

  1675. puzzling.

  1676. It raises

  1677. questions.

  1678. But let

  1679. these three

  1680. things that

  1681. we've just

  1682. touched on

  1683. at the end

  1684. settle in

  1685. your hearts.

  1686. God has

  1687. called you

  1688. to be a

  1689. Christian.

  1690. He has

  1691. chosen you

  1692. and it

  1693. brings about

  1694. humility.

  1695. It brings

  1696. security.

  1697. But it

  1698. leads to

  1699. responsibility.

  1700. Let's

  1701. pray.

  1702. Let's

  1703. pray.

  1704. Father,

  1705. we prayed

  1706. at the

  1707. beginning

  1708. that your

  1709. word is

  1710. truth.

  1711. And there

  1712. are many

  1713. things that

  1714. are in

  1715. it that

  1716. are confusing

  1717. to our

  1718. own minds.

  1719. And there

  1720. are many

  1721. things that

  1722. we find it

  1723. hard to

  1724. accept in

  1725. our own

  1726. hearts.

  1727. things that

  1728. are

  1729. faithful to

  1730. us.

  1731. And so we

  1732. pray for

  1733. your ongoing

  1734. work of

  1735. your spirit

  1736. to bring

  1737. clarity

  1738. and to

  1739. bring

  1740. acceptance

  1741. in our

  1742. hearts.

  1743. And that

  1744. above all

  1745. that we

  1746. would be

  1747. people who

  1748. bow in

  1749. humility

  1750. before you

  1751. and thank

  1752. you for

  1753. our amazing

  1754. salvation,

  1755. for your

  1756. amazing love.

  1757. and to

  1758. know that

  1759. no matter

  1760. what,

  1761. whether I've

  1762. had a bad

  1763. week or a

  1764. good week,

  1765. that your

  1766. love still

  1767. remains and

  1768. we are

  1769. secure.

  1770. And in

  1771. the knowledge

  1772. that you

  1773. will go on

  1774. making

  1775. Christians and

  1776. that your

  1777. gospel has

  1778. not failed,

  1779. help us

  1780. that we may

  1781. go out

  1782. into this

  1783. week with

  1784. a message

  1785. and with

  1786. a truth

  1787. about the

  1788. Lord Jesus.

  1789. Help us

  1790. as we go,

  1791. in Jesus'

  1792. name.

  1793. Amen.

  1794. Amen.
