  1. So we're reading from Romans chapter 9 starting at verse 14 and that's on page 1136 in the Red Church Bible.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  2. So starting in verse 14 of Romans chapter 9.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  3. What shall we say then? Is God unjust? Not at all.

  4. For he says to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I have mercy and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.

  5. It does not therefore depend on man's desire or effort but on God's mercy.

  6. For the scripture says to Pharaoh, I raised you up for this very purpose.

  7. That I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.

  8. Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy and he hardens whom he wants to harden.

  9. One of you will say to me, then why does God still blame us?

  10. For who resists his will?

  11. But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?

  12. Shall what is formed say to him who formed it?

  13. Why did you make me like this?

  14. Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay

  15. some pottery for noble purpose and some for common use?

  16. What if God, choosing to show his wrath, made his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath prepared for destruction?

  17. What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory?

  18. Even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles.

  19. As he says in Hosea, I will call them my people who are not my people and I will call her my loved one who is not my loved one.

  20. And it will happen that in the very place where it is said of them, you are not my people, they will be called sons of the living God.

  21. Isaiah cries out concerning Israel.

  22. Though the number of the Israelites is like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved.

  23. For the Lord will carry out his sentence on earth with speed and finality.

  24. It is just as Isaiah said previously,

  25. Unless the Lord Almighty had left his descendants, we would have become like Sodom.

  26. We would have been like Gomorrah.

  27. Thanks.

  28. Thanks very much, Nick.

  29. Well, as we continue on in our studies, in our series through Romans,

  30. I just want to draw your attention to something in the news sheet again and related to that.

  31. It's the section at the bottom on the inside.

  32. It has gotherefore.com.

  33. Two resources to encourage you to check out.

  34. There's a little book.

  35. They're called a little black book series.

  36. I have a hard copy here if you want to know what it's like.

  37. And it's on the subject of predestination.

  38. That's a big, big word.

  39. But it's helping us to unpack what it means that God would choose us by his grace or set his grace upon us

  40. and deals with the whole subject of our free will and God's work in our lives.

  41. It's aimed at students.

  42. So it's right for me.

  43. So I hope you get what I mean by that.

  44. So easy to understand for people like me.

  45. And then the other one is Peace with God, which is a little study book as well,

  46. which takes you through Romans.

  47. So those are just resources that are available that might help you as we go through this section.

  48. And also the previous talks from Romans 1 to 8 are also up online from previous times.

  49. Well, let's ask for God's help as we pray.

  50. Amen.

  51. Father, your word is good.

  52. It is truth to us.

  53. And it is truth that changes our lives, not just now but for all eternity.

  54. And we ask that by the power of your spirit, you would help us to grasp your word to us this morning,

  55. this afternoon, that it will indeed change us,

  56. that it will tune our hearts to your grace

  57. and know what it is to live in response to your grace.

  58. So please help us, Father, we pray.

  59. In Jesus' name.

  60. Amen.

  61. Well, I want us to imagine for a moment that you're the parent of two children.

  62. It's come to the stage in life where they're grown up

  63. and you must sort out the family inheritance.

  64. But here's the catch.

  65. The law states that only one child can receive the inheritance.

  66. Only one.

  67. So who do you choose?

  68. Which one will you put on the list?

  69. Of course, whichever one you choose, it's going to seem very unfair and very unkind to the other one.

  70. Well, that's the issue that is being raised here.

  71. And I know it has been a matter of much talk for a lot of us over this past week.

  72. But this is the subject that is being raised.

  73. God, we are told, chooses who receives his salvation.

  74. So look back at verse 11 of Romans 9.

  75. Well, it says this,

  76. Yet before the twins were born,

  77. this was the twins, Isaac and Jacob,

  78. before they were born,

  79. or before they had done anything good or bad,

  80. in order that God's purpose in election might stand,

  81. or in order that God's purpose in choosing might stand,

  82. not by works, but by him who calls.

  83. She was told the older will serve the younger.

  84. It's making it very clear that God made a choice.

  85. He chose one and he rejected the other.

  86. Now, to us, that seems very ungracious,

  87. unloving, and unkind.

  88. It doesn't seem to fit in with the God that we know

  89. who loves to portray himself as the Lord,

  90. the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God,

  91. slow to anger,

  92. abounding in unfailing love and faithfulness.

  93. We're struggling to put these two things together.

  94. And in response,

  95. what we find in this text

  96. are two big questions that are raised.

  97. But as we ask these two big questions,

  98. as we answer them,

  99. we discover that God is a gracious God.

  100. In fact, his grace overflows to more and more people

  101. than we could ever expect or imagine.

  102. So what are these two questions?

  103. Well, the first one comes in verse 14.

  104. Question one, is God fair?

  105. Look at verse 14.

  106. What then shall we say?

  107. Is God unjust?

  108. Is God fair in choosing one and rejecting another?

  109. Well, here's the answer.

  110. Read on.

  111. Not at all.

  112. And he gives two examples to help us to understand that.

  113. Firstly, we see it in God's mercy to Moses.

  114. Look at verse 15.

  115. For God says to Moses,

  116. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,

  117. and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.

  118. Now, to understand that quote,

  119. we need to go back to the story from where it comes from,

  120. which is in Exodus chapter 34.

    Exodus 34 chapter mention

  121. So you can keep your finger in Romans 9

  122. and go back to Exodus 34.

  123. And Exodus, you know,

  124. tells us the amazing story

  125. of God's rescue

  126. of the people of Israel

  127. who were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt.

  128. But as soon as God rescued them,

  129. as soon as he brought them out of slavery

  130. and was bringing them towards the promised land,

  131. the people did something terrible.

  132. They all turned their backs on God.

  133. And when Moses was up Mount Sinai

  134. receiving the law,

  135. Aaron, the leader of them,

  136. told all the people

  137. to take off their gold earrings

  138. to do something.

  139. So look at Exodus chapter 32, it is.

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  140. Sorry, Exodus 32, verse 4.

    Exodus 32:4

  141. Exodus 32, verse 4.

    Exodus 32:4

  142. He took what they handed him

  143. and made it into an idol

  144. cast in the shape of a calf,

  145. fashioning it with a tool.

  146. Then they said,

  147. These are the gods, O Israel,

  148. who brought you out of Egypt.

  149. How do you think God would respond to that?

  150. Well, we're told in verse 9.

  151. I have seen these people,

  152. the Lord said to Moses.

  153. And they're stiff-necked people.

  154. They're stubborn and hard-hearted.

  155. Now leave me alone

  156. so that my anger may burn against them

  157. and that I may destroy them.

  158. But Moses prayed for the people in verse 11.

  159. He prayed and he pleaded with God.

  160. And as we read on the story,

  161. we discover this is what happened.

  162. Instead of everyone being punished,

  163. the story goes on to tell us

  164. that only 3,000 people were punished.

  165. Now that's actually quite a small number

  166. compared to the thousands upon thousands

  167. of people who were released from slavery.

  168. And so we read in Exodus 32, verse 14.

    Exodus 32:14

  169. Then the Lord relented

  170. and did not bring on his people

  171. the disaster he had threatened.

  172. So rather than be troubled about the fact

  173. that God punished 3,000 people,

  174. we should be standing back in amazement

  175. that he actually had mercy on any of them.

  176. And it's in this context that God says,

  177. look at Exodus 33, verse 19.

    Exodus 33:19

  178. Exodus 33, verse 19 we read,

    Exodus 33:19

  179. And the Lord said,

  180. I will cause all my goodness

  181. to pass in front of you

  182. and I will proclaim my name,

  183. the Lord, in your presence.

  184. And here's the quote,

  185. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy

  186. and I will have compassion

  187. on whom I have compassion.

  188. This is the God we're dealing with.

  189. So go back to Romans chapter 9.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  190. Chapter 9, verse 16.

  191. It does not, therefore,

  192. salvation does not, therefore,

  193. depend on man's desire or effort,

  194. but on God's mercy.

  195. You see, everything Israel did

  196. and desired to do,

  197. their turning away from God,

  198. their rebellious heart,

  199. deserved God's judgment,

  200. but God responded

  201. with amazing mercy.

  202. So he gives us the example

  203. of his mercy to Moses

  204. and the people of Israel.

  205. But then he gives us another example,

  206. God's justice to Pharaoh.

  207. So, chapter 9 of Romans, verse 17,

  208. he continues,

  209. For the scripture says to Pharaoh,

  210. I raised you up for this very purpose,

  211. that I might display my power in you

  212. and that my name might be proclaimed

  213. in all the earth.

  214. Again, we need to go back

  215. and remember this story

  216. back in Exodus 4 of Pharaoh.

  217. Remember who Pharaoh was.

  218. God had ordered Pharaoh,

  219. the leader of the Egyptians,

  220. who had been so brutal

  221. to the Israelites,

  222. enslaving them

  223. and making them work

  224. with little or nothing.

  225. He told Pharaoh,

  226. you are to let the people go,

  227. but he wouldn't let them go.

  228. And this is what we read

  229. in Exodus chapter 4 and verse 21.

    Exodus 4 chapter mention

  230. Exodus 4, verse 21.

    Exodus 4:21

  231. The Lord said to Moses,

  232. When you return to Egypt,

  233. see that you perform before Pharaoh

  234. all the wonders I have given you

  235. the power to do.

  236. But I will harden his heart

  237. so that he will not let the people go.

  238. God says,

  239. I'll harden your heart.

  240. Pharaoh, who was already hard-hearted,

  241. who was a brutal dictator,

  242. causing trouble to all of these people.

  243. And God says,

  244. I will harden your heart.

  245. Make his hard heart even harder.

  246. So rather than be troubled

  247. with the fact that God

  248. is hardening Pharaoh's heart,

  249. we should see

  250. that God's justice

  251. was being done.

  252. Pharaoh was only getting

  253. what he actually deserved.

  254. So go back to Romans 9 and verse 18.

  255. Therefore,

  256. God has mercy

  257. on whom he wants to have mercy,

  258. and he hardens

  259. whom he wants to harden.

  260. You see,

  261. when we begin to start challenging God

  262. and claiming that God

  263. is being unfair,

  264. we must remember

  265. that this is trying to tell us

  266. that all of us

  267. are just like

  268. the rebellious people of Israel.

  269. We're just like

  270. stubborn Pharaoh.

  271. In each situation,

  272. both Israel and Pharaoh,

  273. both of them

  274. deserved to be punished.

  275. They both deserved

  276. God's justice.

  277. But incredibly,

  278. God chose

  279. to be merciful

  280. to a whole bunch of people

  281. who deserved the opposite.

  282. So the question

  283. we should be asking here is

  284. not why does God choose

  285. one and not the other,

  286. but why does God bother

  287. to choose somebody

  288. like you or me?

  289. Remember the opening illustration

  290. that we had this morning

  291. about the two parents

  292. who must choose

  293. which child

  294. gets the inheritance.

  295. Well, let me add

  296. a little bit more

  297. to that illustration.

  298. Suppose both of the children

  299. were very abusive

  300. and angry

  301. towards their parents.

  302. What if they never cared

  303. for their mum or dad,

  304. never rang them up

  305. to see how they were,

  306. never visited them?

  307. What if they were

  308. constantly borrowing money

  309. and taking

  310. and taking

  311. and taking

  312. and never paying back?

  313. The point is,

  314. while the parents

  315. must still choose,

  316. neither of them

  317. deserve the inheritance.

  318. In fact,

  319. they deserve

  320. nothing.

  321. But in their grace,

  322. they will give it

  323. to one.

  324. Well, that's how it is

  325. with us.

  326. We don't

  327. deserve

  328. God's mercy.

  329. In fact,

  330. that he does

  331. show mercy

  332. to us

  333. is an act

  334. of incredible

  335. grace.

  336. So that's the answer

  337. to question one.

  338. Is God fair?

  339. Well,

  340. God

  341. is

  342. gracious.

  343. The second question

  344. is another great question.

  345. Why does God

  346. blame us?

  347. Verse 19.

  348. One of you

  349. will say,

  350. he predicts,

  351. doesn't he?

  352. And I know I would be

  353. asking the same question

  354. and you're probably

  355. asking this question too.

  356. Verse 19.

  357. One of you will say to me,

  358. then why does God

  359. still blame us?

  360. For who resists

  361. his will?

  362. If God makes

  363. the choice,

  364. then why does God

  365. still blame us

  366. if we don't follow him?

  367. And if God

  368. made Pharaoh's

  369. heart hard,

  370. then is it not

  371. unfair to blame

  372. Pharaoh for being

  373. hard-hearted?

  374. It's a great

  375. question,

  376. but look at the

  377. answer.

  378. Verse 20.

  379. But who

  380. are you,

  381. O man

  382. or woman,

  383. to talk

  384. back to God?

  385. He's saying to us,

  386. let's get some

  387. perspective here.

  388. God

  389. he's the creator,

  390. he's the sustainer

  391. of the entire

  392. universe in which

  393. we live.

  394. He's existed

  395. from before

  396. time began.

  397. He holds

  398. everything together

  399. in his hands,

  400. bringing about

  401. the stars

  402. and the moon

  403. and the sun

  404. and the tides

  405. and everything

  406. he controls.

  407. And he's going

  408. to rule for

  409. all eternity.

  410. We're not

  411. dealing with

  412. some kind of

  413. small person

  414. here.

  415. We,

  416. on the other

  417. hand,

  418. are just

  419. a tiny

  420. part of

  421. his creation.

  422. We live

  423. at most

  424. for about

  425. 80 years

  426. and then

  427. we die.

  428. So he

  429. says in

  430. verse 20,

  431. so who

  432. are you

  433. to be

  434. talking

  435. back

  436. to God?

  437. Shall

  438. what is

  439. formed say

  440. to him

  441. who formed

  442. it,

  443. why did

  444. you make

  445. me like

  446. this?

  447. Does

  448. not the

  449. potter

  450. have the

  451. right to

  452. make out

  453. of the

  454. same lump

  455. of clay

  456. some pottery

  457. for noble

  458. purposes

  459. and some

  460. for common

  461. use?

  462. Who are we?

  463. Who am I

  464. and who are you

  465. to tell God

  466. how he should

  467. rule the

  468. universe?

  469. Who are we

  470. to decide

  471. who God

  472. has mercy

  473. on?

  474. Who are we

  475. to decide

  476. who we

  477. shouldn't

  478. have mercy

  479. on?

  480. You see,

  481. to be

  482. challenging

  483. God and

  484. questioning

  485. God like

  486. this is

  487. basically

  488. an attempt

  489. on our

  490. part

  491. to push

  492. God off

  493. his throne

  494. and say

  495. you don't

  496. know how

  497. to work

  498. this world

  499. I know

  500. better than

  501. you.

  502. But that's

  503. not the

  504. full answer.

  505. You see,

  506. while God

  507. doesn't answer

  508. every single

  509. question we

  510. have,

  511. he wants

  512. us to see

  513. in the midst

  514. of all of

  515. our questions

  516. how gracious

  517. he is.

  518. And we

  519. see this

  520. in two

  521. ways.

  522. First,

  523. God is

  524. slow

  525. to anger.

  526. Look at

  527. verse 22.

  528. Follow

  529. carefully

  530. verse 22.

  531. What if

  532. God,

  533. choosing to

  534. show his

  535. wrath,

  536. his anger

  537. and make

  538. his power

  539. known,

  540. bore with

  541. great patience

  542. the objects

  543. of his wrath

  544. prepared

  545. for destruction?

  546. God

  547. has a

  548. right

  549. to bring

  550. to bring

  551. his justice

  552. and judgment.

  553. But the

  554. fact is,

  555. and the

  556. point is

  557. here,

  558. that God

  559. delays

  560. his justice.

  561. Look at what

  562. it says in

  563. verse 22.

  564. He bore

  565. with great

  566. patience.

  567. God is

  568. slow to

  569. bring his

  570. judgment

  571. so that he

  572. might demonstrate

  573. his kindness

  574. and his

  575. grace.

  576. grace.

  577. He wants

  578. to make

  579. his saving

  580. power known

  581. to the

  582. nations and

  583. to all

  584. people.

  585. That is

  586. why he

  587. is bearing

  588. with great

  589. patience.

  590. Go back

  591. to Romans

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  592. chapter 2

  593. and verse

  594. 4.

  595. Romans

    Romans 2:4

  596. chapter 2

  597. verse 4.

  598. He's already

  599. raised this

  600. same issue.

  601. Romans

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  602. chapter 2

  603. and verse

  604. 4.

  605. Talking

  606. about God's

  607. delay in

  608. his patience

  609. and the

  610. purpose for

  611. it.

  612. He says,

  613. do you

  614. show contempt

  615. for the

  616. riches of

  617. his kindness,

  618. tolerance and

  619. patience,

  620. not realising

  621. that God's

  622. kindness leads

  623. you towards

  624. repentance?

  625. repentance.

  626. You see,

  627. God doesn't

  628. delight in

  629. the death

  630. of anyone.

  631. He's not

  632. willing that

  633. anybody should

  634. perish.

  635. In other

  636. words,

  637. judgment

  638. doesn't come

  639. naturally to

  640. God.

  641. He seeks

  642. to put it

  643. off.

  644. He wants

  645. it to be

  646. the last

  647. thing that

  648. he has

  649. to do.

  650. On the

  651. other hand,

  652. God in the

  653. meantime is

  654. longing to

  655. save and

  656. he wants

  657. us to

  658. grasp how

  659. gracious he

  660. is.

  661. Romans 9

    Romans 9:23

  662. verse 23.

  663. What if he

  664. did this?

  665. What if he

  666. was so

  667. patient?

  668. What if he

  669. did this to

  670. make the

  671. riches of

  672. his glory

  673. known to

  674. the objects

  675. of his

  676. mercy whom

  677. he prepared

  678. in advance

  679. for glory?

  680. God

  681. delays his

  682. judgment so

  683. that he

  684. might display

  685. his salvation.

  686. salvation.

  687. It's like

  688. God places

  689. his two

  690. hands before

  691. us and

  692. in one

  693. hand is

  694. written the

  695. words

  696. justice

  697. and on

  698. the other

  699. hand is

  700. written the

  701. word

  702. riches.

  703. And God

  704. has opened

  705. up the

  706. hand of

  707. riches to

  708. us and

  709. he has

  710. invited us

  711. to come

  712. and see

  713. his grace

  714. and his

  715. compassion.

  716. He wants

  717. us to

  718. taste and

  719. see how

  720. good he

  721. is and

  722. on the

  723. other hand

  724. he keeps

  725. his hand

  726. of justice

  727. closed.

  728. But a

  729. day is

  730. going to

  731. come when

  732. the

  733. riches,

  734. the hand

  735. of his

  736. riches will

  737. be closed

  738. up and

  739. the hand

  740. of judgment

  741. will be

  742. opened.

  743. He is

  744. slow to

  745. anger.

  746. God

  747. delays his

  748. judgment with

  749. great patience

  750. so that he

  751. might display

  752. his grace

  753. and his

  754. salvation to

  755. the nations.

  756. God is

  757. slow to

  758. anger.

  759. And

  760. second,

  761. God is

  762. rich in

  763. love.

  764. God's

  765. riches in

  766. his patience

  767. and in his

  768. grace have

  769. been made

  770. known.

  771. Look at

  772. verse 24.

  773. He's saying

  774. there, not

  775. just to the

  776. Jews, not

  777. just to

  778. those who

  779. had a

  780. privileged

  781. upbringing,

  782. but also

  783. to the

  784. Gentiles, to

  785. people from

  786. other nations

  787. who never

  788. even heard

  789. of God.

  790. Look at

  791. verse 25.

  792. As he

  793. says in

  794. Hosea, I

  795. will call

  796. them my

  797. people who

  798. are not

  799. my people.

  800. I will

  801. call her

  802. my loved

  803. one who

  804. is not

  805. my loved

  806. one.

  807. Do you

  808. see how

  809. far his

  810. grace is

  811. reaching out?

  812. These are

  813. people and

  814. nations who

  815. didn't have

  816. the same

  817. privileges as

  818. the people

  819. of Israel.

  820. They were

  821. considered

  822. outsiders,

  823. nobodies,

  824. enemies of

  825. God.

  826. You turned

  827. your back

  828. on them,

  829. but yet

  830. God in

  831. his grace

  832. and because

  833. of his

  834. riches,

  835. he says

  836. to them,

  837. verse 25,

  838. I will

  839. call these

  840. people,

  841. these outsiders,

  842. these nobodies,

  843. these enemies,

  844. these people,

  845. my people.

  846. I will

  847. call them

  848. my loved

  849. one.

  850. my grace

  851. is so

  852. great that

  853. I will

  854. welcome

  855. them in,

  856. I will

  857. include

  858. them,

  859. I will

  860. draw them

  861. in so

  862. that they

  863. can

  864. experience

  865. the wonder

  866. of my

  867. love.

  868. You all

  869. know Rocky

  870. Bay,

  871. and you

  872. know the

  873. stream in

  874. Rocky Bay.

  875. Well,

  876. when our

  877. kids were

  878. younger,

  879. we used

  880. to try

  881. and block

  882. up that

  883. dam,

  884. or block

  885. up that

  886. stream,

  887. try and

  888. hold the

  889. water

  890. back,

  891. but the

  892. inevitable

  893. was always

  894. going to

  895. happen.

  896. At some

  897. point,

  898. somewhere on

  899. that man-made

  900. dam,

  901. it would

  902. break,

  903. and as

  904. you try

  905. to shovel

  906. sand and

  907. try to

  908. block it

  909. back up,

  910. then it

  911. would break

  912. somewhere

  913. else,

  914. and eventually

  915. the whole

  916. dam would

  917. collapse,

  918. and a

  919. big stream

  920. of water

  921. would come

  922. flowing

  923. through.

  924. Well,

  925. that's like

  926. the riches

  927. of God's

  928. love.

  929. love,

  930. it

  931. overflows

  932. to more

  933. and more

  934. people.

  935. You cannot

  936. hold back

  937. the grace

  938. of God,

  939. and God

  940. is telling

  941. us through

  942. this that

  943. while people

  944. like Pharaoh

  945. may not

  946. have known

  947. God's

  948. mercy,

  949. many of

  950. his

  951. descendants

  952. will.

  953. While

  954. Esau,

  955. tracking back

  956. in Romans

  957. 9,

  958. may not

  959. know God's

  960. compassion,

  961. many of

  962. his

  963. descendants

  964. will.

  965. While

  966. Ishmael

  967. may not

  968. know

  969. God's

  970. love,

  971. many of

  972. his

  973. descendants

  974. will.

  975. That's the

  976. point of

  977. verse 26.

  978. It will

  979. happen that

  980. in that

  981. very place

  982. where it

  983. was said

  984. to them,

  985. you are

  986. not my

  987. people,

  988. they will

  989. be called

  990. sons of

  991. the living

  992. God.

  993. God's

  994. God's

  995. mercy and

  996. compassion

  997. flows to

  998. more and

  999. more people

  1000. than we

  1001. could ever

  1002. think or

  1003. imagine.

  1004. We may

  1005. find many

  1006. things about

  1007. God very

  1008. difficult and

  1009. very hard,

  1010. but one

  1011. thing is

  1012. certain,

  1013. God is

  1014. incredibly

  1015. gracious.

  1016. You see,

  1017. if it were

  1018. not for

  1019. God's

  1020. grace to

  1021. us,

  1022. none of

  1023. us would

  1024. experience

  1025. his salvation.

  1026. Look at

  1027. verse 29,

  1028. the same

  1029. point is

  1030. being made

  1031. in verses

  1032. 27 and

  1033. 28.

  1034. Let's read

  1035. just verse

  1036. 29.

  1037. It is

  1038. just as

  1039. Isaiah

  1040. said

  1041. previously,

  1042. unless the

  1043. Lord Almighty

  1044. had left

  1045. us descendants,

  1046. we would

  1047. have become

  1048. like Sodom,

  1049. we would

  1050. have become

  1051. like Gomorrah.

  1052. You remember

  1053. those two

  1054. great big

  1055. cities in

  1056. the Old

  1057. Testament?

  1058. Cities that

  1059. had experienced

  1060. God's just

  1061. and fair

  1062. judgment because

  1063. of their

  1064. rebellion and

  1065. their behaviour?

  1066. And what

  1067. happened to

  1068. the people

  1069. of those

  1070. cities is

  1071. what should

  1072. have happened

  1073. to the

  1074. people of

  1075. Israel.

  1076. However,

  1077. because of

  1078. God's

  1079. intervention,

  1080. because of

  1081. God's

  1082. grace,

  1083. it didn't

  1084. happen,

  1085. verse 29,

  1086. unless the

  1087. Lord Almighty

  1088. had left

  1089. us descendants.

  1090. If it

  1091. wasn't for

  1092. him intervening

  1093. into our

  1094. lives,

  1095. then we

  1096. would have

  1097. been like

  1098. the rest

  1099. of them.

  1100. It's only

  1101. because of

  1102. God's grace

  1103. that any

  1104. of them

  1105. were saved

  1106. at all.

  1107. I know

  1108. that Romans

  1109. 9 has

  1110. raised lots

  1111. of questions.

  1112. I know

  1113. I've had

  1114. conversations

  1115. with some

  1116. of you.

  1117. I have

  1118. the same

  1119. questions

  1120. going on

  1121. in my

  1122. own mind.

  1123. But when

  1124. we question

  1125. God's

  1126. fairness,

  1127. when we

  1128. start to

  1129. blame God

  1130. as if he's

  1131. got it

  1132. wrong,

  1133. what we

  1134. actually

  1135. discover

  1136. is that

  1137. God is

  1138. actually being

  1139. incredibly

  1140. fair.

  1141. We don't

  1142. deserve

  1143. what we

  1144. get.

  1145. We deserve

  1146. to be

  1147. judged and

  1148. yet he

  1149. doesn't do

  1150. that for

  1151. us.

  1152. What is

  1153. amazing is

  1154. that God

  1155. not only

  1156. shows grace

  1157. and mercy

  1158. to some

  1159. people,

  1160. God

  1161. shows grace

  1162. and mercy

  1163. to people

  1164. like you

  1165. and me.

  1166. He shows

  1167. it to people

  1168. like you

  1169. and me.

  1170. And as

  1171. we'll discover

  1172. as we read

  1173. on,

  1174. he gives

  1175. us that

  1176. grace so

  1177. that we

  1178. might begin

  1179. to share

  1180. that same

  1181. grace with

  1182. other people

  1183. who have

  1184. not yet

  1185. heard the

  1186. amazing wonder

  1187. of God's

  1188. love.

  1189. It's only

  1190. by grace

  1191. that we

  1192. are who

  1193. we are.

  1194. God is

  1195. good and

  1196. God is

  1197. gracious.

  1198. Let's

  1199. pray.

  1200. let's

  1201. just

  1202. reflect

  1203. on what

  1204. we've

  1205. just been

  1206. thinking

  1207. through.

  1208. If God

  1209. was fair

  1210. then we

  1211. would be

  1212. judged.

  1213. God

  1214. but yet

  1215. in his

  1216. kindness

  1217. his grace

  1218. and compassion

  1219. he has

  1220. shown us

  1221. his love

  1222. his mercy

  1223. and his

  1224. kindness.

  1225. thank you

  1226. father that

  1227. you do

  1228. not treat

  1229. us as

  1230. our sins

  1231. deserve.

  1232. Thank you

  1233. that your

  1234. grace

  1235. overflows

  1236. to people

  1237. like us.

  1238. We thank

  1239. you for

  1240. what you

  1241. have done

  1242. and we

  1243. praise you

  1244. in Jesus

  1245. name.

  1246. Amen.

  1247. we're

  1248. going to

  1249. sing a

  1250. couple of

  1251. songs in

  1252. response.

  1253. The first

  1254. one is

  1255. only by

  1256. grace can

  1257. we enter

  1258. only by

  1259. grace can

  1260. we stand.

  1261. It celebrates

  1262. God's

  1263. amazing grace

  1264. to us.

  1265. in the

  1266. next

  1267. one that

  1268. we'll

  1269. rage

  1270. ,

  1271. Amen.

  1272. that's

  1273. next Bill

  1274. create

  1275. Vine to

  1276. Mary,

  1277. Amen.
