  1. Our reading starts at page 1136 of the Church Bible and it's Romans chapter 9 verse 30 and

    Romans 9:30

  2. I'm reading straight through to chapter 10 verse 13. So that's page 1136.

  3. What then shall we say that the Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have obtained it,

  4. a righteousness that is by faith? But Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it.

  5. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith, but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the

  6. stumbling stone, as it is written, See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock

  7. that makes them fall, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame. Brothers, my heart's

  8. desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them

  9. that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge, since they did not know the

  10. righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own. They did not submit to God's

  11. righteousness. Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

  12. Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law. The man who does these things will

  13. live by them. But the righteousness that is by faith says, Do not say in your heart, Who will ascend into

  14. heaven? That is, to bring Christ down. Or who will descend into the deep? That is, to bring Christ up from the

  15. dead. But what does it say? The word is near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart. That is,

  16. the word of faith we are proclaiming. That if you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord,

  17. and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your

  18. heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

  19. As the scripture says, anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame. For there is no difference

  20. between Jew and Gentile. The same Lord is Lord of all, and richly blesses all who call on him.

  21. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

  22. Thanks very much, Trish. So keep your Bibles open, have a pen at hand, and you can take notes as we

  23. go along.

  24. Again, if you would like a summary of Romans chapter 9 to 11, then you can look that up on the church

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  25. website. On one of the recent posts, you will see that there's a couple of articles there which gives

  26. a summary, and that might just help you to remember all that it's about. So you can look that up on the

  27. church website. Let's pray then and ask for God's help.

  28. Father, we thank you for the privilege

  29. of having your word.

  30. Lord, we thank you, too, that you have given to us your Holy Spirit, who is the ultimate teacher,

  31. the one who not only gives us understanding in our minds, but applies it to our hearts, the one who

  32. changes us, and the one who helps us to see who Jesus is and what he has done. And so we pray now for his help.

  33. May your power be at work amongst us individually.

  34. Would you be at work in our families?

  35. And will you be at work within this church family?

  36. Would you be pleased to do your work so that it brings honour and glory to you?

  37. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  38. Amen.

  39. Well, when the madness and the busyness of the day is over, and you're lying awake in bed,

  40. what do you dream of for your life?

  41. What do you most long for and want?

  42. A peaceful and easier life?

  43. A better job and a bigger home?

  44. Or what about your children?

  45. What is your desire for your children?

  46. What above all else do you want them to have?

  47. A good education?

  48. A stable job?

  49. A happy life?

  50. Or what about those who are closest to you?

  51. Your friends?

  52. What's your longing for them?

  53. What do you see as the most important thing for them in their life?

  54. An end to an illness, maybe?

  55. Or them finding a partner?

  56. Well, if we are followers of the Lord Jesus, there should be one main desire.

  57. Look at chapter 10, verse 1.

  58. Brothers and sisters, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites, for those who are closest to me, my people,

  59. my heart's desire and prayer to God is that they may be saved.

  60. The one thing that keeps me awake at night, the one thing that consumes my thinking by day and shapes my prayers,

  61. is that those who I know and love would become Christians.

  62. My dream and my desire is that they are saved.

  63. You see, for us to experience God's salvation means to be free from all of our guilt and shame,

  64. to be forgiven of all of our sin, past, present and future,

  65. to be welcomed in and treasured as one of God's own children,

  66. and to be given the promise of life in his new creation for all eternity.

  67. Not to be saved means to face God's just and fair judgment,

  68. to be shut out from God's presence,

  69. to be cut off from all that is good and beautiful.

  70. It will be hell itself for all eternity.

  71. And so the one controlling desire is that our friends and our family are saved.

  72. And here's the good news.

  73. There's a wonderful promise in chapter 10 verse 13.

  74. Do you see it there?

  75. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

  76. Not some people, not a privileged few, not a special select group,

  77. but look at verse 10 or verse 13.

  78. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

  79. You see, whatever our dreams and desires are,

  80. God's heart is that everyone would hear the good news

  81. and experience the salvation that he has to offer.

  82. So there's this wonderful invitation,

  83. but it comes with three conditions,

  84. and we're going to look at them each one.

  85. An open invitation, but three conditions.

  86. Here's the first one.

  87. There is only one way to receive salvation.

  88. Only one way to receive salvation.

  89. Now this comes in two parts.

  90. There's the first part.

  91. We receive it by faith and not works.

  92. Look at verse 30.

  93. Chapter 9, verse 30.

  94. Having been talking about the salvation,

  95. he says in verse 30,

  96. What then shall we say?

  97. That the Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness

  98. have obtained it,

  99. a righteousness that is by faith.

  100. But Israel who pursued a law of righteousness

  101. has not attained it.

  102. You see, in these couple of verses here,

  103. we're introduced to two kinds of people.

  104. Look at verse 30.

  105. We've got the Gentiles.

  106. They were not very religious people.

  107. They weren't the kind of people who read their Bibles.

  108. They weren't interested in going to church.

  109. And then in verse 31,

  110. we've got the religious people,

  111. the people of Israel.

  112. They're the kind of people you meet day to day

  113. who are wanting to go to church.

  114. They're the people who pray and read

  115. and they're interested in religious things.

  116. But the surprise here between these two groups of people

  117. is the kind of person

  118. who actually receives righteousness.

  119. And righteousness here is right standing with God.

  120. It's salvation.

  121. And here's the surprise in these two verses.

  122. The religious person who works for salvation

  123. doesn't receive it.

  124. Verse 32.

  125. Why not?

  126. Because they pursued it not by faith,

  127. but as if it were by works.

  128. You see, some people think that you earn your way

  129. into God's favour.

  130. People think that you build up lots of points

  131. and therefore you deserve God's acceptance.

  132. Look at me.

  133. Look at what I did this week.

  134. In other words, you're working for it.

  135. But the surprise is,

  136. it's completely the opposite.

  137. Verse 30 again.

  138. The Gentiles,

  139. these are the people who aren't very religious,

  140. who weren't pursuing righteousness,

  141. who weren't working for their salvation.

  142. They have got it.

  143. They have received this righteousness

  144. because it is by faith.

  145. So, we receive it by faith,

  146. not works.

  147. And here's the second part to it.

  148. By faith,

  149. not works,

  150. in Christ,

  151. and not ourselves.

  152. You see,

  153. faith must be placed somewhere.

  154. And it's placed in a person,

  155. Jesus Christ,

  156. and what he has done.

  157. So, verse 32.

  158. Let's read from there again.

  159. They pursued it,

  160. not by faith,

  161. but as if it were by works.

  162. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.

  163. What's the stumbling stone?

  164. Well, let's read on.

  165. As it is written,

  166. See, I lay in Zion

  167. a stone that causes men to stumble

  168. and a rock that makes them fall,

  169. and the one who trusts in him.

  170. So, the rock is a person.

  171. So, the one who trusts in this person

  172. will never be put to shame.

  173. You see,

  174. God had promised

  175. that he was going to set up

  176. a stone,

  177. excuse me,

  178. a rock.

  179. Not a physical rock,

  180. but a king,

  181. a person

  182. who was going to come

  183. and save

  184. and rule,

  185. and that rock

  186. is

  187. Jesus Christ.

  188. Now, the person

  189. who has faith

  190. in themselves

  191. rather than in Jesus,

  192. then the rock

  193. becomes

  194. an obstacle.

  195. Look at verse 33 again.

  196. It's a stone

  197. that causes people

  198. to stumble.

  199. It's a rock

  200. that makes people

  201. fall.

  202. Why?

  203. Well, because they're trying

  204. to get salvation

  205. on their own.

  206. And so,

  207. when they are confronted

  208. with Jesus

  209. who says,

  210. I am the only way

  211. to salvation,

  212. he becomes an obstacle

  213. to get rid of.

  214. He's something

  215. that's in the way

  216. that we don't want

  217. and so people

  218. want to kill him

  219. and get rid of him.

  220. But the person

  221. who does have faith

  222. in Jesus,

  223. then this rock,

  224. as we heard earlier,

  225. becomes the foundation

  226. for your life.

  227. It becomes the place

  228. to stand on

  229. and a shelter

  230. to hide in.

  231. Look at the end

  232. of verse 33.

  233. The one who trusts

  234. in him,

  235. who trusts

  236. in this rock,

  237. Jesus Christ,

  238. will never

  239. be put to shame.

  240. So our faith

  241. is placed somewhere.

  242. It's placed

  243. in a person,

  244. in Jesus,

  245. a place

  246. to stand on,

  247. a shelter

  248. to hide in.

  249. And here's why.

  250. Here's why

  251. we must have

  252. our faith

  253. in Jesus.

  254. Look at verse 4.

  255. chapter 10

  256. verse 4.

  257. It tells us there

  258. that this rock,

  259. Jesus,

  260. is the end

  261. of the law

  262. so that there

  263. may be righteousness

  264. or salvation

  265. for everyone

  266. who believes.

  267. Now look at that

  268. little phrase there,

  269. Christ is the end

  270. of the law.

  271. This is what it means.

  272. Two things.

  273. First,

  274. Jesus becomes

  275. the law keeper

  276. for us.

  277. He obeyed it

  278. and He never

  279. broke it.

  280. He lived it

  281. and He never

  282. failed it.

  283. And He did it,

  284. He obeyed it

  285. for you

  286. and for me.

  287. And so in response,

  288. our faith is in

  289. the obedience

  290. of Jesus

  291. who kept the law

  292. for us.

  293. We fail in the law,

  294. but He obeyed it

  295. perfectly.

  296. So my faith

  297. is in His

  298. perfect performance

  299. and not mine.

  300. So Jesus,

  301. do you see,

  302. He becomes

  303. the rock

  304. on which we stand.

  305. We stand on

  306. His perfect

  307. obedience

  308. for you

  309. and for me.

  310. But the second

  311. part to this

  312. is,

  313. Jesus also

  314. became

  315. a lawbreaker

  316. for us.

  317. Now by that I mean,

  318. I don't mean that He

  319. went and broke

  320. the law,

  321. but that He was

  322. treated

  323. as a lawbreaker

  324. for us.

  325. He took

  326. our disobedience

  327. on Himself

  328. and He was

  329. punished

  330. as if He

  331. failed

  332. and disobeyed.

  333. But it was

  334. always in

  335. our place.

  336. So our faith

  337. is in Jesus'

  338. death

  339. for you

  340. and for me.

  341. Our faith

  342. is in Him

  343. who took

  344. the blame

  345. for me

  346. for all my

  347. failures

  348. for not

  349. keeping the law

  350. and doing

  351. what is right.

  352. So Jesus

  353. becomes the rock

  354. in which we

  355. shelter,

  356. in which we

  357. hide.

  358. He is the rock

  359. in which we

  360. stand.

  361. the rock

  362. in which we

  363. shelter.

  364. Our faith

  365. is in a person,

  366. in Christ

  367. who has

  368. completed

  369. and done it

  370. all for you

  371. and for me.

  372. So there's

  373. only one way

  374. to receive

  375. salvation.

  376. We receive it

  377. by faith,

  378. not works,

  379. in Christ

  380. and not

  381. ourselves.

  382. Here's the

  383. second condition.

  384. It's an open

  385. invitation,

  386. but

  387. there is

  388. only one

  389. place

  390. to find

  391. salvation.

  392. There's only

  393. one place

  394. to find

  395. salvation.

  396. Again,

  397. this comes

  398. in two

  399. parts.

  400. We find

  401. it first

  402. not on

  403. our own.

  404. We can't

  405. find it

  406. on our

  407. own.

  408. Chapter

  409. 10,

  410. verse 5.

  411. Moses

  412. describes

  413. in this

  414. way the

  415. righteousness

  416. that is

  417. by the

  418. law,

  419. or the

  420. way in

  421. which

  422. salvation

  423. comes

  424. by the

  425. law.

  426. The man

  427. who does

  428. these

  429. things

  430. will

  431. live

  432. by

  433. them.

  434. Now,

  435. in some

  436. ways,

  437. this is

  438. just a

  439. summary of

  440. all that

  441. he's just

  442. said,

  443. that some

  444. people trying

  445. to find

  446. salvation

  447. on their

  448. own.

  449. They try

  450. to achieve

  451. it by

  452. avoiding

  453. Jesus

  454. and depending

  455. on their

  456. own

  457. ability.

  458. So the

  459. man who

  460. does these

  461. things will

  462. live by

  463. them.

  464. He must

  465. keep to

  466. the law

  467. and do

  468. everything

  469. that it

  470. says.

  471. In this

  472. case,

  473. for people,

  474. it is

  475. following the

  476. law that

  477. they must

  478. do

  479. religious

  480. things,

  481. and if

  482. they think

  483. they do

  484. religious

  485. things,

  486. that's

  487. going to

  488. be enough.

  489. For

  490. somebody

  491. else,

  492. their

  493. particular

  494. law

  495. might be

  496. being

  497. tolerant

  498. and being

  499. open to

  500. other

  501. people,

  502. and if

  503. I'm a

  504. very

  505. tolerant

  506. and

  507. loving

  508. kind of

  509. person

  510. of all

  511. people

  512. in

  513. different

  514. ways,

  515. then

  516. that's

  517. going

  518. to get

  519. me

  520. salvation.

  521. But

  522. the

  523. point

  524. is,

  525. we

  526. never

  527. ever

  528. find

  529. salvation

  530. on our

  531. own.

  532. We'll

  533. never

  534. find it

  535. in our

  536. own

  537. particular

  538. systems,

  539. or in

  540. the places

  541. that we

  542. look.

  543. Look at

  544. verse 6.

  545. The

  546. righteousness

  547. that is

  548. by faith,

  549. or the

  550. salvation

  551. that comes

  552. by faith

  553. says,

  554. do not

  555. say in

  556. your heart

  557. who will

  558. ascend

  559. into

  560. heaven,

  561. that is

  562. to try

  563. and bring

  564. Christ

  565. down,

  566. or who

  567. will

  568. descend

  569. into

  570. the

  571. deep,

  572. that is

  573. to bring

  574. Christ

  575. up from

  576. the

  577. dead.

  578. You

  579. see,

  580. he's

  581. saying,

  582. look,

  583. you can

  584. go

  585. searching

  586. to the

  587. highest

  588. heights,

  589. you can

  590. go looking

  591. down to

  592. the deepest

  593. depths,

  594. but you're

  595. not going

  596. to find

  597. it.

  598. Everyone,

  599. as we

  600. said

  601. earlier,

  602. is longing

  603. for salvation.

  604. We're all

  605. in search

  606. of rest

  607. and peace.

  608. We all

  609. long for

  610. something

  611. different in

  612. our lives

  613. and for

  614. the world

  615. to be

  616. better.

  617. And some

  618. people turn

  619. to religion,

  620. some people

  621. turn to

  622. Islam or

  623. Buddhism,

  624. other people

  625. run away

  626. from religion

  627. and they

  628. try to

  629. find it

  630. in atheism

  631. or humanism.

  632. We search

  633. for it

  634. in people,

  635. we look

  636. for it

  637. in all

  638. kinds of

  639. different

  640. places,

  641. but the

  642. point is

  643. we never

  644. ever find

  645. it.

  646. Why?

  647. Because in

  648. all the

  649. places we

  650. search and

  651. in all the

  652. places we

  653. look,

  654. it's always

  655. demanding

  656. something

  657. from us.

  658. It's always

  659. asking of

  660. us something

  661. that we

  662. must do

  663. or something

  664. that we

  665. must achieve

  666. which we

  667. can never

  668. ever live

  669. up to.

  670. So where

  671. do we

  672. find our

  673. salvation

  674. that we

  675. search for?

  676. Well, we

  677. don't find

  678. it on our

  679. own.

  680. We find

  681. it in

  682. God's

  683. word,

  684. the

  685. gospel.

  686. Look at

  687. verse 8.

  688. So what

  689. does it

  690. say?

  691. The

  692. word

  693. is near

  694. you.

  695. It is

  696. in your

  697. mouth and

  698. it is

  699. in your

  700. heart.

  701. That is

  702. the word

  703. of faith,

  704. the word

  705. of the

  706. gospel that

  707. we are

  708. proclaiming.

  709. So the

  710. reason that

  711. they have

  712. the word

  713. of the

  714. gospel in

  715. them,

  716. the word

  717. of faith

  718. in them,

  719. is because

  720. it has

  721. been

  722. proclaimed

  723. to them.

  724. And that's

  725. where we

  726. find

  727. salvation.

  728. We find

  729. salvation in

  730. the word

  731. of faith,

  732. in the

  733. gospel

  734. message.

  735. That's

  736. where we'll

  737. see it.

  738. So we

  739. don't need

  740. to go

  741. searching

  742. because

  743. Jesus has

  744. already come

  745. down from

  746. heaven to

  747. search for

  748. us.

  749. We don't

  750. need to

  751. go looking

  752. because Jesus

  753. lives.

  754. He has

  755. been raised

  756. from the

  757. grave and

  758. he's still

  759. looking for

  760. people.

  761. And that

  762. message of

  763. hope of

  764. Jesus

  765. searching and

  766. looking for

  767. us is

  768. near to

  769. us.

  770. He tells

  771. us in

  772. verse 8

  773. that it's

  774. in the

  775. word of

  776. faith.

  777. It's in

  778. the gospel

  779. and it's

  780. that gospel

  781. word that

  782. will save

  783. us.

  784. Look at

  785. verse 9

  786. of chapter

  787. 10.

  788. He says,

  789. look,

  790. we've told

  791. you this

  792. message,

  793. we've

  794. proclaimed

  795. to you,

  796. verse 9,

  797. that if you

  798. confess with

  799. your mouth

  800. Jesus is

  801. Lord and

  802. if you

  803. believe in

  804. your heart

  805. that God

  806. raised him

  807. from the

  808. dead,

  809. you will

  810. be saved.

  811. That's the

  812. message.

  813. This is the

  814. gospel that

  815. has been

  816. proclaimed to

  817. you.

  818. Now, we

  819. must be

  820. clear on

  821. this.

  822. This isn't

  823. some kind

  824. of spiritual

  825. mantra so

  826. that everybody

  827. who rattles

  828. off the

  829. words,

  830. Jesus is

  831. Lord,

  832. at some

  833. particular

  834. meeting or

  835. a camp or

  836. whatever the

  837. place may

  838. be,

  839. that somehow

  840. that's it,

  841. that's the

  842. end of

  843. it,

  844. that I'm

  845. now saved.

  846. No, look

  847. at verse 10.

  848. For it is

  849. with your

  850. heart that

  851. you believe

  852. and are

  853. justified,

  854. and it is

  855. with your

  856. mouth that

  857. you confess

  858. and are

  859. saved.

  860. You see,

  861. what comes

  862. out of

  863. your mouth,

  864. what you

  865. speak and

  866. what you

  867. say,

  868. is an

  869. outward

  870. expression of

  871. what's going

  872. on inside

  873. your life,

  874. inside your

  875. heart.

  876. In other

  877. words, if

  878. you believe

  879. with your

  880. heart,

  881. if you

  882. are trusting

  883. in the

  884. rock,

  885. Jesus

  886. Christ,

  887. the one

  888. whom you

  889. stand on,

  890. the one

  891. that you

  892. take shelter

  893. in,

  894. if you

  895. believe in

  896. him,

  897. and you

  898. express that

  899. with your

  900. mouth,

  901. you will

  902. be saved.

  903. The point

  904. is,

  905. in these

  906. few verses

  907. here,

  908. is that we

  909. must never

  910. ever think

  911. that God

  912. is playing

  913. a game of

  914. hide and

  915. seek with

  916. us,

  917. that he's

  918. kind of

  919. somewhere

  920. out there

  921. and we've

  922. got to go

  923. find him

  924. and search

  925. for him

  926. somewhere.

  927. The opposite

  928. is true.

  929. He is the

  930. one who has

  931. come to

  932. search for

  933. us.

  934. He is the

  935. one who's

  936. come and

  937. made himself

  938. known to

  939. us today

  940. through his

  941. word,

  942. the gospel.

  943. This is what

  944. we have right

  945. here in God's

  946. word, in the

  947. Bible.

  948. It has been

  949. made known

  950. to us.

  951. So there's

  952. only one

  953. place to

  954. find salvation.

  955. We find

  956. it not on

  957. our own, but

  958. we find it

  959. in God's

  960. word, the

  961. gospel.

  962. So, the

  963. third

  964. condition, it's

  965. an open

  966. invitation to

  967. all.

  968. And third,

  969. there is only

  970. one way to

  971. experience

  972. salvation.

  973. Look at

  974. verse 11.

  975. As the

  976. scripture says,

  977. anyone who

  978. trusts in

  979. him, in

  980. Christ, will

  981. never be

  982. put to

  983. shame.

  984. So, rather

  985. than think that

  986. salvation is

  987. just for a

  988. select few,

  989. we should

  990. understand that

  991. this is an

  992. offer that

  993. is open to

  994. all.

  995. Verse 13.

  996. Everyone,

  997. who calls

  998. on the

  999. name of

  1000. the Lord,

  1001. will be

  1002. saved.

  1003. It is an

  1004. offer without

  1005. limits.

  1006. It is

  1007. told out

  1008. to the

  1009. world.

  1010. This is

  1011. the generosity

  1012. of God.

  1013. Now, while

  1014. the offer

  1015. is open

  1016. to anyone,

  1017. we must

  1018. also understand

  1019. that the

  1020. way to

  1021. experience

  1022. this gospel,

  1023. this message

  1024. of salvation,

  1025. is also

  1026. the same

  1027. for everyone.

  1028. Look at

  1029. verse 12.

  1030. For there

  1031. is no

  1032. difference

  1033. between

  1034. Jew and

  1035. Gentile.

  1036. The same

  1037. Lord is

  1038. Lord of

  1039. all, and

  1040. richly

  1041. blesses

  1042. all who

  1043. call on

  1044. him.

  1045. It

  1046. doesn't

  1047. matter, he's

  1048. saying, what

  1049. your background

  1050. is.

  1051. Whether you

  1052. would describe

  1053. yourself as a

  1054. religious person,

  1055. or whether you

  1056. would say you

  1057. are irreligious.

  1058. It doesn't

  1059. matter what the

  1060. colour of your

  1061. skin is, or

  1062. the language

  1063. that you

  1064. speak.

  1065. Whether you

  1066. were raised

  1067. in a

  1068. Christian

  1069. home, or

  1070. whether you

  1071. didn't have

  1072. that.

  1073. Whether you

  1074. are rich or

  1075. poor, skilled

  1076. or unskilled.

  1077. Look what it

  1078. says in

  1079. verse 12.

  1080. There is no

  1081. difference between

  1082. the Jew, the

  1083. religious person,

  1084. and the Gentile,

  1085. the irreligious

  1086. person.

  1087. There is no

  1088. difference.

  1089. God makes

  1090. no distinction.

  1091. He has no

  1092. favourites.

  1093. no one person

  1094. has an

  1095. advantage over

  1096. another person.

  1097. He works

  1098. salvation in

  1099. each and every

  1100. person in

  1101. exactly the

  1102. same way.

  1103. Look at the

  1104. second part of

  1105. verse 12.

  1106. The same

  1107. Lord is

  1108. Lord of

  1109. all and

  1110. richly

  1111. blesses all

  1112. who call

  1113. on him.

  1114. Salvation

  1115. is available

  1116. to all.

  1117. How?

  1118. through his

  1119. riches.

  1120. The riches

  1121. of his

  1122. grace.

  1123. God doesn't

  1124. have one

  1125. way of

  1126. working with

  1127. one particular

  1128. people and

  1129. another way of

  1130. working with

  1131. somebody else.

  1132. He saves

  1133. all of us

  1134. in exactly

  1135. the same

  1136. way by

  1137. his

  1138. grace.

  1139. Now that's

  1140. good news

  1141. because that

  1142. means if

  1143. he treats

  1144. and he deals

  1145. with all of

  1146. us in

  1147. exactly the

  1148. same way

  1149. then we're

  1150. all on the

  1151. same playing

  1152. field.

  1153. Nobody here

  1154. can feel

  1155. inferior to

  1156. anybody else

  1157. and nobody

  1158. can be

  1159. superior to

  1160. anybody else.

  1161. We're all on

  1162. the same

  1163. playing field

  1164. and that

  1165. means that if

  1166. I am a

  1167. Christian

  1168. then that

  1169. means anybody

  1170. else can

  1171. become a

  1172. Christian.

  1173. And if

  1174. God has

  1175. saved you

  1176. and you

  1177. are trusting

  1178. in Jesus

  1179. Christ

  1180. then that

  1181. means he

  1182. can save

  1183. any of your

  1184. friends and

  1185. family too.

  1186. There's only

  1187. one way to

  1188. experience

  1189. salvation

  1190. and that is

  1191. through God's

  1192. grace which

  1193. is open

  1194. to all.

  1195. Now I want

  1196. to finish

  1197. with two

  1198. things.

  1199. If you've

  1200. got notes

  1201. the little

  1202. A5 sheet

  1203. they're written

  1204. there, they're

  1205. not on the

  1206. screen but

  1207. here they are,

  1208. here's the

  1209. first thing.

  1210. If you are

  1211. not yet a

  1212. Christian

  1213. is there any

  1214. reason why

  1215. you have not

  1216. yet received

  1217. salvation?

  1218. It's an

  1219. offer that

  1220. has been

  1221. given to

  1222. you.

  1223. And it

  1224. says very

  1225. simply

  1226. that in

  1227. verse 11

  1228. that anyone

  1229. who trusts

  1230. in him

  1231. will not

  1232. be put to

  1233. shame.

  1234. There is an

  1235. open invitation.

  1236. You've heard

  1237. it.

  1238. What's

  1239. stopping you

  1240. from trusting

  1241. in it?

  1242. And the

  1243. second

  1244. question is

  1245. this.

  1246. If you are

  1247. a Christian

  1248. maybe you've

  1249. got it into

  1250. your mind

  1251. that you

  1252. think I've

  1253. got this

  1254. friend or

  1255. I've got

  1256. this person

  1257. in my

  1258. family and

  1259. they're not

  1260. yet a

  1261. Christian and

  1262. I just

  1263. don't think

  1264. it's

  1265. possible.

  1266. Well look

  1267. at what

  1268. it's saying

  1269. here.

  1270. Everyone

  1271. who calls

  1272. on the

  1273. name of

  1274. the Lord

  1275. will be

  1276. saved.

  1277. And so

  1278. chapter 10

  1279. verse 1

  1280. we can

  1281. pray for

  1282. that person

  1283. trusting them

  1284. into God's

  1285. care and

  1286. trusting him

  1287. that he

  1288. will do

  1289. his work

  1290. in their

  1291. lives.

  1292. So who

  1293. is that

  1294. person

  1295. that you

  1296. could be

  1297. praying for

  1298. that could

  1299. become a

  1300. Christian?

  1301. So two

  1302. things.

  1303. If you

  1304. are not

  1305. yet a

  1306. Christian

  1307. why not?

  1308. And if

  1309. you are a

  1310. Christian

  1311. who are

  1312. you praying

  1313. for that

  1314. could become

  1315. a Christian?

  1316. Let's just

  1317. take a

  1318. moment to

  1319. reflect on

  1320. that and

  1321. pray through

  1322. those things.

  1323. let's just

  1324. do that

  1325. in the

  1326. quietness

  1327. now.

  1328. If you

  1329. are a

  1330. Christian

  1331. then pray

  1332. for that

  1333. person

  1334. right now

  1335. who you

  1336. know

  1337. that they

  1338. too

  1339. might become

  1340. a follower

  1341. of Jesus.

  1342. And if

  1343. you are

  1344. not yet

  1345. a Christian

  1346. why not

  1347. ask that

  1348. you might

  1349. receive

  1350. salvation

  1351. from

  1352. him.

  1353. Thank you.

1354. Father, we thank you for your word.

1355. We thank you for your generous and open invitation.

1356. We pray for your ongoing saving work in our lives

  1357. and within our community.

1358. Father, give us a heart that we would continue to desire and to pray

1359. that those who we know and love

1360. would yet become followers of you.

  1361. Amen.

1362. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  1363. Amen.
