  1. So that's Luke chapter 11, it's on page 1042.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  2. What are we reading? 1 to 13?

  3. So Luke chapter 11, starting at verse 1.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  4. One day Jesus was praying in a certain place.

  5. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him,

  6. Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.

  7. He said to them,

  8. When you pray, say,

  9. Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,

  10. give us each day our daily bread,

  11. forgive us our sins,

  12. for we also forgive everyone who sins against us,

  13. and lead us not into temptation.

  14. Then he said to them,

  15. Suppose one of you has a friend,

  16. and he goes to him at midnight and says,

  17. Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,

  18. because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me,

  19. and I have nothing to set before him.

  20. Then the one inside answers,

  21. Don't bother me, the door is already locked,

  22. and my children are in bed with me.

  23. I can't get up and give you anything.

  24. I tell you,

  25. Though he will not get up and give him the bread,

  26. because he is his friend,

  27. yet because of the man's boldness,

  28. he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

  29. So I say to you,

  30. Ask, and it will be given to you.

  31. Seek, and you will find.

  32. Knock, and the door will be opened to you.

  33. For everyone who asks, receives.

  34. He who seeks, finds.

  35. And to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

  36. Which of you fathers,

  37. if your son asks for a fish,

  38. will give him a snake instead?

  39. Or if he asks for an egg,

  40. will give him a scorpion?

  41. If you then, though you are evil,

  42. know how to give good gifts to your children,

  43. how much more will your Father in heaven

  44. give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

  45. Thanks very much, Alex.

  46. Well, it is a text and teaching on prayer.

  47. So, why don't we pray

  48. and ask for God's help?

  49. Amen.

  50. Our Father God, thank you for your word to us.

  51. And thank you that you, by your Spirit,

  52. speak to us through your word.

  53. And thank you that through your word,

  54. you tell us and remind us

  55. and invite us

  56. to talk to you,

  57. to come with our requests,

  58. to ask, to seek, to knock.

  59. And so we come to you, Father,

  60. and ask that you will give us

  61. the wonderful gift of your Holy Spirit.

  62. Pour out your Spirit upon us

  63. so that we may understand your word,

  64. not just intellectually,

  65. not just intellectually,

  66. but that we may experience it in our hearts

  67. and in our lives,

  68. that it may teach us afresh

  69. the relationship that you call us to have with you.

  70. Thank you that even as we talk to you now,

  71. your Son

  72. is taking these prayers

  73. and speaking them also

  74. to the Father

  75. on our behalf.

  76. We ask for your help to us.

  77. In Jesus' name we pray.

  78. Amen.

  79. Well, I wonder when was the last time

  80. you had a time of prayer

  81. on your own?

  82. What was it like?

  83. Perhaps it started very well.

  84. But after a couple of sentences,

  85. your mind began to wander

  86. and you were thinking about work

  87. or college next week

  88. or a friend that you had to meet

  89. and before you knew it,

  90. you'd actually forgotten

  91. what you were doing.

  92. Maybe as you sat down to pray,

  93. you never really got going at all

  94. because all of a sudden

  95. you became very conscious

  96. of a whole lot of sin in your life

  97. and you just felt far too guilty

  98. and you just thought,

  99. there's no way I can talk to God.

  100. Or maybe you've just given up

  101. on prayer altogether.

  102. You're disappointed

  103. that things that you had asked God for

  104. just never materialised

  105. and you are really just fed up

  106. with the idea of prayer.

  107. Or maybe you've actually tried

  108. to bring a bit of structure to it

  109. and you've planned things out

  110. and you said,

  111. right, at this particular time

  112. on each day,

  113. I'm going to pray.

  114. But after a couple of days,

  115. it all stopped

  116. as the busyness of life

  117. overtook.

  118. That's my experience.

  119. And the fact is,

  120. we all struggle to pray,

  121. including the disciples.

  122. So look at chapter 11, verse 1.

  123. One day,

  124. Jesus was praying

  125. in a certain place.

  126. When he finished,

  127. one of his disciples said to him,

  128. Lord,

  129. teach us to pray.

  130. Teach us to pray.

  131. Just as John taught his disciples.

  132. You see,

  133. we know we should pray.

  134. We know it's good to pray.

  135. But we all find it so hard to pray.

  136. In fact,

  137. in our determination

  138. to be people

  139. who are better prayers,

  140. it seems the more we try,

  141. the more we fail.

  142. As soon as we begin to pray,

  143. our mind wanders

  144. or we just find

  145. there's something more important

  146. to be doing.

  147. So rather than prayer

  148. being a privilege to enjoy,

  149. it just becomes a duty

  150. to perform.

  151. Well,

  152. as Jesus teaches

  153. his disciples

  154. about prayer,

  155. he's bringing us back

  156. to some very central themes

  157. that encourage us

  158. and remind us

  159. that we can all pray.

  160. And over the next

  161. few weeks together,

  162. we're going to look

  163. at these three things.

  164. Who we pray to,

  165. how we pray,

  166. and what we pray for.

  167. Who we're praying to,

  168. how we should pray,

  169. and what we should be praying for.

  170. And this morning,

  171. we're going to start

  172. with who we are praying to.

  173. So,

  174. who are we praying to?

  175. Look at verse 2.

  176. Jesus responds

  177. to their question.

  178. He said to them,

  179. when you pray,

  180. say,

  181. Father.

  182. Now,

  183. it might seem so obvious

  184. to us,

  185. but we must understand,

  186. we must know

  187. who we are talking to.

  188. We are talking to God

  189. as Father.

  190. And in a sense,

  191. as Jesus teaches us,

  192. he is inviting us

  193. to join him

  194. in relationship

  195. with his Father.

  196. Father.

  197. The disciples

  198. had heard Jesus pray,

  199. they had watched Jesus pray

  200. on many occasions,

  201. and now they're wanting

  202. to be able to pray

  203. as Jesus did.

  204. Go back to chapter 10,

  205. verse 21.

  206. Here they are watching,

  207. and here they are listening

  208. to Jesus pray.

  209. So,

  210. chapter 10,

  211. verse 21.

  212. At that time,

  213. Jesus,

  214. full of joy,

  215. through the Holy Spirit,

  216. said,

  217. I praise you,

  218. Father,

  219. Lord of heaven and earth.

  220. Verse 22.

  221. All things have been committed

  222. to me

  223. by my Father.

  224. No one knows

  225. who the Son is

  226. except the Father,

  227. and no one knows

  228. who the Father is

  229. except the Son,

  230. and those to whom

  231. the Son chooses

  232. to reveal him.

  233. You see,

  234. in that prayer,

  235. we see that there is

  236. a deep relational intimacy

  237. between the Father

  238. and the Son.

  239. Only the Father

  240. knows the Son,

  241. and only the Son

  242. knows the Father.

  243. They are one together.

  244. They have existed

  245. in relationship

  246. before time began.

  247. They loved each other

  248. before all eternity,

  249. and now Jesus

  250. is saying to his disciples,

  251. you can call me

  252. Father too,

  253. or you can call him

  254. Father too.

  255. Jesus is inviting us

  256. to join him

  257. in relationship

  258. with his Father.

  259. But how can we join in

  260. with this relationship?

  261. How does it actually happen?

  262. Well, look back at verse 21 again

  263. of Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  264. At that time,

  265. Jesus,

  266. full of joy

  267. through the Holy Spirit,

  268. said,

  269. I praise you,

  270. Father,

  271. Lord and heaven and earth,

  272. because

  273. you have hidden

  274. these things.

  275. Hidden what things?

  276. Hidden

  277. this idea

  278. that you can have

  279. a relationship

  280. with the Father.

  281. He has hidden

  282. these things

  283. from the wise

  284. and learned,

  285. those who think

  286. they know it all,

  287. and think that they can

  288. just have it

  289. any way they want.

  290. But he has revealed it

  291. to little children,

  292. people who come

  293. in dependence.

  294. Yes,

  295. Father,

  296. for this was your

  297. good pleasure.

  298. You see,

  299. it's the Father's desire

  300. that we should be

  301. in relationship

  302. with him.

  303. It tells us there

  304. that he takes

  305. pleasure

  306. and delight

  307. in making himself

  308. known to us.

  309. it pleases the Father

  310. that we should

  311. know him.

  312. So how can we

  313. know the Father?

  314. Well,

  315. look down at verse 22

  316. again.

  317. The last part,

  318. it says,

  319. no one knows

  320. who the Father is

  321. except the Son

  322. and those to whom

  323. the Son chooses

  324. to reveal him.

  325. Jesus is the only one

  326. who makes the Father

  327. known to us.

  328. It is through Jesus

  329. that we get to know

  330. the Father personally,

  331. and intimately.

  332. And we know

  333. that when Jesus

  334. died on the cross,

  335. he was coming

  336. into this world

  337. to join

  338. with us.

  339. Joining with us

  340. to become

  341. like us,

  342. to take the blame

  343. for all the wrong

  344. things that we have

  345. done,

  346. so that

  347. we could join

  348. him

  349. in relationship

  350. with the Father.

  351. He joined

  352. with us

  353. so that we could

  354. join with him.

  355. It is summarised

  356. for us very well

  357. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:18

  358. chapter 2

  359. verse 18.

  360. No need to look it up,

  361. I can read it out

  362. to you.

  363. Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  364. and verse 18

  365. says this,

  366. for through him,

  367. that is,

  368. through Jesus,

  369. we both have access

  370. to the Father

  371. by one spirit.

  372. And in Ephesians 3

    Ephesians 3:12

  373. verse 12

  374. it says,

  375. in him,

  376. in Jesus,

  377. and through faith

  378. in Jesus,

  379. we may approach

  380. God,

  381. our Father,

  382. with freedom

  383. and confidence.

  384. Jesus

  385. is the only one

  386. who makes

  387. the Father

  388. known to us.

  389. So when we pray,

  390. we are talking

  391. to the same

  392. Father

  393. that Jesus

  394. talked to.

  395. The relationship

  396. that he enjoyed

  397. with the Father

  398. now becomes

  399. our relationship.

  400. The intimacy

  401. that Jesus

  402. enjoyed with the

  403. Father

  404. becomes ours

  405. to enjoy.

  406. Again,

  407. this father-child

  408. relationship

  409. is very well

  410. illustrated for us

  411. in Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  412. The well-known

  413. story of the

  414. two lost

  415. sons

  416. in Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  417. The first part

  418. of the story

  419. tells us about

  420. a son

  421. who had wished

  422. that his father

  423. was dead,

  424. wished that he

  425. had been buried

  426. and that he could

  427. now have his share

  428. and inheritance

  429. and basically

  430. he takes it

  431. and he leaves

  432. home.

  433. But after a life

  434. of self-indulgence

  435. and ruining

  436. his life,

  437. he now begins

  438. to return home

  439. broken

  440. and ruined

  441. and we pick it up

  442. in Luke 15

    Luke 15:18

  443. verse 18.

  444. I will set out

  445. the son,

  446. this is the son

  447. speaking,

  448. I will set out

  449. and go back

  450. to my father

  451. and say to him,

  452. Father,

  453. I have sinned

  454. against heaven

  455. and against you.

  456. I am no longer

  457. worthy to be called

  458. your son.

  459. Make me like

  460. one of your hired men.

  461. Maybe he'll just

  462. take me back

  463. so I could just

  464. work in the fields

  465. or something.

  466. So he got up

  467. and he went

  468. to his father

  469. but while he was

  470. still a long way up

  471. his father saw him.

  472. The idea there

  473. that the father's

  474. looking out for him

  475. and he was filled

  476. with compassion for him

  477. and he ran

  478. to his son

  479. and he threw

  480. his arms around him

  481. and kissed him

  482. and the son

  483. said to him,

  484. Father,

  485. I have sinned

  486. against heaven

  487. and against you.

  488. I am no longer

  489. worthy to be called

  490. your son

  491. and before he could

  492. give any other

  493. words of explanation,

  494. verse 22,

  495. but the father

  496. said to his servants,

  497. Quick,

  498. bring the best robe

  499. and put it on him.

  500. Put a ring

  501. on his finger

  502. and sandals

  503. on his feet.

  504. All signs

  505. and symbols

  506. of the fact

  507. that he is now

  508. part of the family.

  509. Bring the fattened calf

  510. and kill it.

  511. Let's have a feast

  512. and celebrate

  513. for this son of mine

  514. was dead

  515. and is alive again.

  516. He was lost

  517. and is found.

  518. So they began

  519. to celebrate.

  520. The point is so clear

  521. that when we repent

  522. and turn to God

  523. the father,

  524. he forgives us,

  525. he welcomes us,

  526. he accepts us

  527. and he treats us

  528. as his own son

  529. so that we can be

  530. in relationship

  531. with him.

  532. This is what it means

  533. to talk to God

  534. as father.

  535. father.

  536. There's a very famous

  537. picture,

  538. have it on the screen

  539. there,

  540. we've seen it before,

  541. of President JFK

  542. and here he is

  543. sitting at his desk

  544. in the Oval Office,

  545. the Presidential Suite,

  546. perhaps the most

  547. guarded room

  548. possible

  549. and here he is,

  550. the President,

  551. the most protected

  552. person,

  553. but sitting underneath

  554. his desk

  555. is his little son,

  556. JFK Jr.

  557. The office is the centre

  558. of all power

  559. and authority.

  560. Here is where

  561. everybody who's important

  562. gets to be invited.

  563. National and international

  564. decisions are made

  565. in this office

  566. and nobody is allowed

  567. in there.

  568. It's off limits.

  569. Access is denied

  570. and if you tried

  571. to force your way

  572. in there,

  573. you would be arrested

  574. or perhaps you'd

  575. even be killed.

  576. But yet,

  577. because of this

  578. unique relationship

  579. between father

  580. and son,

  581. Junior has access

  582. to his father.

  583. Now,

  584. through Jesus,

  585. we have been given

  586. access to

  587. the father.

  588. He alone

  589. is the one

  590. who reveals

  591. the father to us.

  592. The father who is

  593. Lord of heaven

  594. and earth.

  595. the creator,

  596. the sustainer,

  597. the ruler of all things.

  598. And just as Jesus

  599. talked with his father

  600. and had that intimate

  601. relationship with him,

  602. so we can talk to our father

  603. without fear,

  604. in freedom

  605. and in confidence.

  606. but what kind of father

  607. are we talking to?

  608. Well,

  609. we are talking to a father

  610. who listens

  611. and answers.

  612. A father who listens

  613. and answers.

  614. Go back to

  615. Luke 11.

  616. Let's pick it up

  617. in verse 5.

  618. Jesus tells

  619. a story.

  620. Verse 5,

  621. he said to them,

  622. suppose one of you

  623. has a friend.

  624. And he goes to him

  625. at midnight

  626. and says,

  627. friend,

  628. lend me three loaves

  629. of bread

  630. because a friend

  631. of mine

  632. on a journey

  633. has come to me

  634. and I have nothing

  635. to set before him.

  636. Now,

  637. as we read this,

  638. we've got to remember

  639. that people then

  640. lived in very basic

  641. accommodation.

  642. It wasn't all very

  643. kind of separate rooms

  644. as we have today.

  645. The kitchen

  646. was simply the living room

  647. and the living room

  648. became the bedroom.

  649. So we can imagine

  650. the scene here,

  651. we've got this family

  652. all snuggled up

  653. in the one room,

  654. all nice and warm

  655. and then this neighbour

  656. comes along

  657. and starts knocking

  658. on the door

  659. at midnight.

  660. Well,

  661. maybe if I stay quiet

  662. he'll go away.

  663. But the knocking persists,

  664. verse 7.

  665. Then one inside,

  666. then the one inside

  667. answers,

  668. don't bother me,

  669. go away.

  670. The door's already locked

  671. and my children

  672. are with me in bed.

  673. I can't get up

  674. and give you anything.

  675. You see,

  676. he knows if he gets up

  677. to answer the door,

  678. the whole family

  679. are going to be woken up

  680. and then the baby's

  681. going to start crying

  682. and will need fed

  683. and then the kids

  684. will need the loo.

  685. Why don't you try

  686. Brennan's next door?

  687. Verse 8.

  688. I tell you,

  689. though he will not

  690. get up and give him

  691. the bread

  692. because he is his friend,

  693. yet because of the man's

  694. boldness.

  695. Now,

  696. commentators,

  697. when you read this

  698. passage here,

  699. will all say that

  700. that's not a very helpful

  701. translation,

  702. boldness.

  703. It should really be

  704. something like

  705. shamelessness.

  706. Yet,

  707. because of the man's

  708. shamelessness,

  709. he will get up

  710. and give him

  711. as much as he needs.

  712. Now,

  713. when it says here,

  714. because of the man's

  715. shamelessness,

  716. it can refer,

  717. and we need to follow

  718. this through very carefully,

  719. it can refer to either

  720. the man

  721. knocking on the door

  722. or it can refer to

  723. the man on the inside.

  724. And I think here,

  725. it's primarily about

  726. the man who's on the inside,

  727. who's asleep with his family.

  728. So,

  729. the reason

  730. the neighbour

  731. gets bread

  732. is not because

  733. he keeps on

  734. knocking shamelessly

  735. whatever time of the night

  736. it is,

  737. and he won't give up

  738. knocking,

  739. but because the man

  740. on the inside

  741. does not want to be

  742. shamed

  743. by his neighbour.

  744. His reputation,

  745. his integrity

  746. is at stake.

  747. You see,

  748. if he doesn't get up

  749. and answer the door,

  750. if he doesn't get up

  751. and help his neighbour,

  752. then the whole village

  753. is going to know

  754. how stingy

  755. and selfish he is,

  756. and he's going to bring

  757. shame on the whole community.

  758. So,

  759. verse 8,

  760. yet because

  761. of the man's

  762. sense of shame,

  763. he will get up

  764. and give him

  765. as much

  766. as he needs.

  767. You see,

  768. the point of this

  769. little story here

  770. is not to make

  771. comparisons,

  772. but it's to draw

  773. a contrast.

  774. Jesus is not

  775. saying

  776. God is like

  777. some reluctant neighbour

  778. and you have to

  779. keep on nagging

  780. and knocking

  781. and keep on

  782. banging on the door

  783. until eventually

  784. he answers.

  785. No,

  786. it's saying the opposite,

  787. that God is

  788. always attentive,

  789. he is always

  790. listening to our

  791. every cry,

  792. and he will

  793. answer

  794. because

  795. his integrity

  796. is at stake.

  797. To avoid

  798. being shamed,

  799. he will hear

  800. and he will

  801. answer.

  802. In other words,

  803. if a reluctant

  804. neighbour

  805. would listen

  806. and would

  807. answer,

  808. how much

  809. more

  810. will your

  811. Father in Heaven

  812. listen

  813. and answer?

  814. Father in Heaven

  815. So we must

  816. never think

  817. that God

  818. is asleep

  819. and that

  820. he can't

  821. be disturbed.

  822. He's never

  823. asleep.

  824. We must

  825. never think

  826. that God

  827. is so tied

  828. up that

  829. he mustn't

  830. be inconvenienced.

  831. He is

  832. never put

  833. out with

  834. our coming

  835. to him.

  836. We must

  837. never think

  838. that God

  839. is uninterested

  840. in our affairs

  841. or he wouldn't

  842. be bothered

  843. with us.

  844. He is

  845. deeply

  846. concerned.

  847. And so

  848. the invitation

  849. is to come

  850. and talk

  851. to our

  852. Father

  853. any time,

  854. anywhere,

  855. about anything

  856. because he

  857. is always

  858. listening

  859. and he

  860. will always

  861. answer.

  862. That is the

  863. character

  864. of Father

  865. God,

  866. one who

  867. listens and

  868. answers.

  869. And second,

  870. the Father

  871. that we pray

  872. to is a

  873. Father who

  874. gives good

  875. gift.

  876. Look down

  877. at verse 11.

  878. Here he

  879. tells another

  880. story,

  881. which is

  882. again quite

  883. humorous.

  884. Which of

  885. you fathers,

  886. he says,

  887. verse 11,

  888. if your

  889. son asks

  890. for a

  891. fish,

  892. we'll give

  893. him a

  894. snake

  895. instead.

  896. Or if

  897. he asks

  898. for an

  899. egg,

  900. we'll give

  901. him a

  902. scorpion.

  903. Now what

  904. kind of

  905. father would

  906. treat his

  907. child like

  908. that?

  909. Could you

  910. imagine a

  911. father who

  912. goes and

  913. buys a

  914. poisonous

  915. rattlesnake

  916. for his

  917. son's

  918. birthday

  919. instead of

  920. giving him

  921. a nice

  922. little

  923. tropical

  924. fish?

  925. Or could

  926. you imagine

  927. a father

  928. who serves

  929. up a

  930. live scorpion

  931. underneath

  932. some lettuce

  933. to his

  934. daughter who

  935. would ask

  936. for egg

  937. salad?

  938. No father

  939. would do

  940. that to

  941. their child.

  942. Verse 13,

  943. if you

  944. know how

  945. to give

  946. good gifts

  947. to your

  948. children,

  949. how much

  950. more,

  951. how much

  952. more will

  953. your father

  954. in heaven

  955. give the

  956. Holy Spirit

  957. to those

  958. who ask

  959. him?

  960. Again,

  961. the point

  962. of the

  963. story,

  964. like the

  965. other one,

  966. is to

  967. draw a

  968. contrast,

  969. not a

  970. comparison,

  971. a contrast.

  972. If our

  973. earthly

  974. fathers,

  975. even though

  976. they are

  977. evil,

  978. in other

  979. words,

  980. even though

  981. they mess

  982. up and

  983. get things

  984. wrong and

  985. they're not

  986. perfect people,

  987. even though

  988. earthly fathers

  989. would never

  990. give such

  991. a dangerous

  992. and a

  993. horrible

  994. gift to

  995. their

  996. children,

  997. how much

  998. more will

  999. your heavenly

  1000. father,

  1001. who is

  1002. perfect,

  1003. give good

  1004. gifts?

  1005. Sometimes we

  1006. may feel

  1007. that God

  1008. is out

  1009. to harm

  1010. us or

  1011. to trick

  1012. us,

  1013. telling us

  1014. one thing

  1015. but then

  1016. doing another.

  1017. Maybe we

  1018. see God

  1019. as some

  1020. kind of

  1021. practical

  1022. joker who

  1023. promises us

  1024. all kinds

  1025. of good

  1026. things but

  1027. then they

  1028. only turn

  1029. out to be

  1030. bad.

  1031. But nothing

  1032. could be

  1033. further from

  1034. the truth.

  1035. He is

  1036. always generous,

  1037. always good,

  1038. always kind.

  1039. Now of

  1040. course that

  1041. doesn't mean

  1042. that we

  1043. get everything

  1044. that we

  1045. ask for.

  1046. We'll look

  1047. at this in

  1048. detail next

  1049. week.

  1050. God doesn't

  1051. give in to

  1052. our spiritual

  1053. tantrums just

  1054. because we

  1055. nag and

  1056. shout and

  1057. whine and

  1058. whinge.

  1059. He's not

  1060. swayed by

  1061. our selfish,

  1062. sinful desires.

  1063. But he

  1064. always gives

  1065. us what is

  1066. right and

  1067. what is best

  1068. for us.

  1069. He is the

  1070. perfect father

  1071. who does

  1072. not withhold

  1073. what is

  1074. good for

  1075. us.

  1076. And if

  1077. it isn't

  1078. good for

  1079. us,

  1080. then he's

  1081. not going

  1082. to give

  1083. it to

  1084. us.

  1085. He will

  1086. withhold

  1087. something if

  1088. it's not

  1089. going to be

  1090. good for

  1091. you.

  1092. Again,

  1093. this is

  1094. summarised for

  1095. us so well

  1096. in Romans

  1097. 8.

  1098. Let me

  1099. read those

  1100. verses.

  1101. Romans 8

    Romans 8:15

  1102. verse 15.

  1103. It says

  1104. there, it's

  1105. talking about

  1106. the relationship

  1107. that we now

  1108. have with

  1109. God the

  1110. Father through

  1111. Jesus.

  1112. He says,

  1113. For you did

  1114. not receive a

  1115. spirit that

  1116. makes you a

  1117. slave again to

  1118. fear, but

  1119. you received

  1120. the spirit of

  1121. sonship.

  1122. And by him

  1123. we cry

  1124. Abba, which

  1125. means Father.

  1126. Verse 32,

  1127. He who did

  1128. not spare his

  1129. son, so the

  1130. Father.

  1131. who did

  1132. not spare

  1133. his son, but

  1134. gave him up

  1135. for us all,

  1136. how will he

  1137. not also,

  1138. along with

  1139. him, graciously

  1140. give us all

  1141. things?

  1142. You see, this

  1143. is the relationship

  1144. that we have.

  1145. He has given

  1146. us the greatest

  1147. gift possible,

  1148. the Lord Jesus

  1149. Christ.

  1150. So if he's

  1151. given us the

  1152. greatest gift,

  1153. how will he

  1154. not also,

  1155. along with

  1156. him, give

  1157. us everything

  1158. else that we

  1159. need?

  1160. Our Father

  1161. will not

  1162. withhold what

  1163. is right

  1164. and best

  1165. for us.

  1166. And so the

  1167. invitation is

  1168. to come and

  1169. talk to

  1170. our Father,

  1171. who gives

  1172. good gifts

  1173. to his

  1174. children.

  1175. So,

  1176. talk to

  1177. the Father.

  1178. Talk to

  1179. him.

  1180. One of the

  1181. reasons I think

  1182. we all find

  1183. prayer so hard

  1184. is because we

  1185. see it as

  1186. something that

  1187. we have to

  1188. do.

  1189. It's like a

  1190. duty that we

  1191. have to

  1192. perform.

  1193. A little box

  1194. that we have

  1195. to tick.

  1196. Somehow we

  1197. think we

  1198. must do

  1199. something to

  1200. better ourselves,

  1201. to kind of

  1202. dress ourselves

  1203. up before we

  1204. come to God,

  1205. or that we

  1206. have to

  1207. improve our

  1208. technique,

  1209. or maybe we

  1210. need a little

  1211. bit of soft

  1212. music, or a

  1213. few candles,

  1214. what do we

  1215. need to

  1216. somehow that

  1217. God would

  1218. hear me and

  1219. see me and

  1220. accept what

  1221. I'm saying.

  1222. But prayer

  1223. is not a

  1224. duty to

  1225. perform.

  1226. It is a

  1227. relationship

  1228. to enjoy.

  1229. Jesus is

  1230. inviting us to

  1231. join him in

  1232. relationship with

  1233. his Father,

  1234. the Lord of

  1235. heaven and

  1236. earth, who

  1237. is always

  1238. listening and

  1239. answering, and

  1240. he only gives

  1241. what is good

  1242. and right to

  1243. us.

  1244. And because

  1245. of our faith

  1246. in Jesus, the

  1247. relationship that

  1248. Jesus had with

  1249. his Father is

  1250. now our

  1251. relationship.

  1252. The intimacy

  1253. that he enjoyed

  1254. is now ours

  1255. to enjoy.

  1256. So it's not

  1257. about us trying

  1258. to better

  1259. ourselves.

  1260. It's not about

  1261. us trying to

  1262. improve our

  1263. technique in

  1264. prayer.

  1265. It's not

  1266. anything to

  1267. do about

  1268. what we

  1269. do.

  1270. It's all

  1271. about what

  1272. we now

  1273. have because

  1274. of Jesus.

  1275. we are

  1276. already in

  1277. the

  1278. relationship.

  1279. So when

  1280. the disciples

  1281. ask Jesus,

  1282. Lord, teach

  1283. us to

  1284. pray, he

  1285. simply starts

  1286. by saying,

  1287. when you

  1288. pray, say,

  1289. Father.

  1290. Say,

  1291. Father.

  1292. Prayer starts

  1293. when we

  1294. understand that

  1295. it is not a

  1296. duty to

  1297. perform, but

  1298. a relationship

  1299. with our

  1300. Father in

  1301. Heaven that

  1302. we can

  1303. enjoy.

  1304. Let's pray

  1305. to our

  1306. Father now.

  1307. Amen.

  1308. Father,

  1309. we're sorry

  1310. we confess

  1311. that we

  1312. complicate

  1313. prayer.

  1314. We're

  1315. sorry that

  1316. we make

  1317. excuses

  1318. about prayer.

  1319. And we're

  1320. sorry that

  1321. we treat

  1322. prayer in

  1323. the wrong

  1324. way.

  1325. Thank you

  1326. for showing

  1327. us through

  1328. your word

  1329. afresh of

  1330. the relationship

  1331. that we can

  1332. have with

  1333. you through

  1334. your Son

  1335. Jesus.

  1336. Thank you

  1337. that you

  1338. are the

  1339. ultimate

  1340. and perfect

  1341. Father.

  1342. Thank you

  1343. that you

  1344. are always

  1345. listening and

  1346. that you

  1347. always answer

  1348. our every

  1349. cry and

  1350. our every

  1351. call.

  1352. thank you

  1353. that you

  1354. are a

  1355. father who

  1356. only gives

  1357. good gifts

  1358. to us.

  1359. Teach us

  1360. to pray.

  1361. Teach us

  1362. to enjoy

  1363. our relationship

  1364. with you.

  1365. and may

  1366. this week

  1367. be a

  1368. week of

  1369. deep

  1370. intimacy

  1371. of talking

  1372. to God

  1373. as

  1374. father.

  1375. Please

  1376. help us.

  1377. In

  1378. Jesus name

  1379. we pray.

  1380. Amen.

  1381. we're going

  1382. to sing

  1383. for us.

  1384. Thank you

  1385. for us.
