  1. On page 1042, Luke chapter 11, verse 1 to 13.

    Luke 11:1–13

  2. One day Jesus was praying in a certain place.

  3. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him,

  4. Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.

  5. He said to them, when you pray, say,

  6. Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.

  7. Give us each day our daily bread.

  8. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us,

  9. and lead us not into temptation.

  10. Then he said to them, suppose one of you has a friend,

  11. and goes to him at midnight and says,

  12. Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,

  13. because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me,

  14. and I have nothing to set before him.

  15. Then the one inside answers, don't bother me.

  16. The door is already locked, and my children are in bed.

  17. I can't get up and give you anything.

  18. I tell you, though he will not get up and give him bread because he is his friend,

  19. yet because of the man's boldness,

  20. he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

  21. So I say to you, ask and it will be given to you,

  22. seek and you will find,

  23. knock and the door will be opened to you.

  24. For anyone who asks, receives,

  25. he who seeks, finds,

  26. and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

  27. Which of you fathers,

  28. if your son asks for a fish,

  29. will we give him a snake instead?

  30. Or if he asks for an egg,

  31. will we give him a scorpion?

  32. If you then, though you are evil,

  33. know how to give good gifts to your children,

  34. how much more will your Father in Heaven

  35. give the Holy Spirit to those who ask of him?

  36. Thanks, Lucy.

  37. Well, I haven't made a mistake.

  38. In case you're wondering, you're thinking,

  39. didn't we read this last week?

  40. Yes, we did.

  41. And we're using it simply as a basis,

  42. a launch pad,

  43. to help us understand prayer.

  44. So we looked at it in depth last week.

  45. And next week we'll be focusing in particular

  46. on the prayer,

  47. Father Hallowed Be Your Name,

  48. and just following that through.

  49. But today we're going to be looking at some parts from it

  50. and launching us into other texts

  51. to help us understand prayer.

  52. So let's pray again and ask for God's help.

  53. Father, we ask for your help in understanding your words.

  54. You say we can ask for the Holy Spirit

  55. and so we pray for your Holy Spirit

  56. that he may fill us afresh

  57. so that these words that we see on the page

  58. are not just ordinary words

  59. but life-changing words.

  60. Words that enter our lives, as it were,

  61. and change us on the inside,

  62. helping us to understand who you are

  63. and our place before you.

  64. So please encourage us.

  65. Father, please help us.

  66. And Father, please bless us.

  67. Amen.

  68. As we start, I want to ask a couple of questions.

  69. When we pray,

  70. how long do you think we should pray for?

  71. So if I pray for one hour,

  72. is it more powerful than praying for just two minutes?

  73. Or where should I pray?

  74. If I prayed in a church building

  75. with candles and some nice soft music,

  76. is that better than praying in the car

  77. with the radio blaring?

  78. Or what should I say in prayer?

  79. If I pray using complicated theological language

  80. and threw in a few these and thous,

  81. do you think it's better than

  82. praying like you would talk to a friend?

  83. Well, when it comes to prayer,

  84. it's not about the words we use,

  85. it's not about the place we go to,

  86. or the length of time that it takes.

  87. As one writer has put it,

  88. prayer is nothing more or nothing less

  89. than a child asking her father for help.

  90. And that can take five hours or two seconds.

  91. It could happen in a church or in a car.

  92. It could be carefully prepared

  93. or it could be a sudden outburst of emotion.

  94. So when the disciples in verse 1

  95. came to Jesus and they said,

  96. Lord, teach us to pray.

  97. In verse 2, Jesus said to them,

  98. when you pray, say,

  99. Father.

  100. That word, Father, is the same word

  101. a child would use when they are calling out

  102. to their earthly father for help.

  103. Dad!

  104. It's one of intimacy.

  105. It's a relationship.

  106. So here Jesus is inviting us

  107. to join him in relationship with his father.

  108. And as we thought of earlier at the beginning,

  109. because of Jesus' death on the cross,

  110. we now have access to the father.

  111. So the relationship that Jesus had with his father

  112. is now our relationship.

  113. Prayer is not some duty to perform.

  114. It is a relationship between a child

  115. and their father.

  116. So in verse 9 we read,

  117. So I say to you,

  118. Ask, ask the father,

  119. and it will be given to you.

  120. Seek and you will find.

  121. Knock and the door will be opened to you.

  122. You see, in prayer we are coming to a father

  123. who listens and who answers

  124. and who generously gives good gifts.

  125. Verse 13,

  126. If you then, though you are evil,

  127. and this there is talking about earthly fathers,

  128. if you though are evil,

  129. know how to give good gifts to your children,

  130. how much more

  131. will your father in heaven give?

  132. So prayer is nothing more or nothing less

  133. than a child asking their heavenly father for help.

  134. But how we ask is all important.

  135. And that's what we're going to consider.

  136. Two big things we're going to look at this morning.

  137. First, we pray in dependence.

  138. We pray in dependence.

  139. When we pray,

  140. yes, we are talking to our father.

  141. But look at what kind of father he is.

  142. We saw this last week.

  143. In chapter 10, verse 21,

  144. it says this.

  145. Chapter 10, verse 21.

  146. At that time,

  147. Jesus, full of joy,

  148. through the Holy Spirit said,

  149. I praise you,

  150. Father,

  151. Lord of heaven and earth.

  152. Our father is the sovereign,

  153. all-powerful Lord.

  154. The fact that he is Lord

  155. means he is the creator

  156. of the universe.

  157. He controls all that he has made

  158. and he rules over

  159. all that he has made.

  160. He is Lord

  161. of heaven and earth.

  162. The disciples themselves

  163. learnt this very early on

  164. as they prayed.

  165. So keep your finger in Luke chapter 11

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  166. and jump to Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  167. Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  168. Acts, of course,

  169. is the second book

  170. that Luke wrote.

  171. And in Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  172. it's,

  173. Jesus has gone back to heaven.

  174. He has sent his spirit.

  175. And there's been a lot of persecution

  176. and struggle for the disciples.

  177. And they've been put in prison

  178. and they've just been released.

  179. So in Acts chapter 4, verse 23,

    Acts 4:23

  180. we read this.

  181. On their release,

  182. Peter and John went back

  183. to their own people

  184. and reported all that

  185. the chief priests and elders

  186. had said to them.

  187. When they heard this,

  188. they raised their voices together

  189. in prayer to God.

  190. So they're in a time of crisis,

  191. a time of difficulty,

  192. and immediately they turn

  193. to God in prayer.

  194. And look what they say.

  195. Verse 24,

  196. Sovereign Lord,

  197. they said,

  198. you made the heaven

  199. and the earth

  200. and the sea

  201. and everything in them.

  202. Our Father

  203. is the Sovereign One.

  204. He rules over the entire universe.

  205. He controls the weather patterns

  206. when it rains

  207. and where it is sunny.

  208. He upholds the forces of nature,

  209. the movements of the planets,

  210. the seas and the tides.

  211. And our Father

  212. rules over the actions of people.

  213. So as we read on in their prayer,

  214. verse 27,

  215. they remember the time

  216. when Jesus,

  217. where the plot was

  218. to get rid and kill Jesus.

  219. So verse 27,

  220. Indeed, Herod and Pontius Pilate

  221. met together with the Gentiles

  222. and the people of Israel

  223. in this city

  224. to conspire against

  225. your holy servant,

  226. Jesus,

  227. whom you anointed.

  228. And they did kill him,

  229. but look what they say next.

  230. Verse 28,

  231. They did

  232. what your power and will

  233. had decided beforehand

  234. should happen.

  235. God, our Father,

  236. decides

  237. what people do

  238. and he makes it

  239. a part of his plan.

  240. He controls

  241. the evil actions

  242. of people

  243. and he uses it

  244. for something good,

  245. in this case,

  246. the salvation

  247. of the world.

  248. And not only that,

  249. our Father rules

  250. over the lives

  251. of every single person.

  252. So jump to

  253. Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  254. Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  255. This isn't a prayer,

  256. but it's reminding us

  257. of who God is.

  258. Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17:24

  259. verse 24.

  260. The God who made

  261. the world

  262. and everything in it

  263. is the Lord

  264. of heaven and earth.

  265. That same phrase.

  266. And he doesn't live

  267. in temples built by hands.

  268. You can't constrain him.

  269. You can't box him in.

  270. Verse 25,

  271. And he is not served

  272. by human hands

  273. as if he needed anything,

  274. because he himself

  275. gives all men

  276. life and breath

  277. and everything else.

  278. He is the

  279. all-sufficient one.

  280. And he sustains

  281. everyone else

  282. and everything else.

  283. But look at this,

  284. verse 26.

  285. From one man

  286. he made

  287. every nation

  288. of men,

  289. that they should

  290. inhabit the whole earth.

  291. And he determines

  292. the time set for them

  293. and the exact places,

  294. the exact places

  295. where they should live.

  296. Our Father controls

  297. where you and I live

  298. and for how long

  299. we live.

  300. He decides

  301. when we are born

  302. and whereabouts

  303. we were born.

  304. Our Father

  305. is Lord

  306. of heaven and earth.

  307. He rules over

  308. all things

  309. and all people.

  310. So when we come

  311. to pray,

  312. yes we are praying

  313. to our Father,

  314. but we come to our Father

  315. in dependence,

  316. recognising

  317. that I am not

  318. in charge,

  319. but he is.

  320. knowing that I

  321. can't control life,

  322. but he does.

  323. We come to our

  324. Father in heaven

  325. who holds

  326. everything

  327. in his hands,

  328. the entire universe,

  329. every detail

  330. about our life

  331. is in his hands.

  332. Nothing

  333. is outside

  334. of his sovereign rule.

  335. So we pray

  336. to our Father

  337. in dependence,

  338. but

  339. with confidence.

  340. Go back to Luke

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  341. chapter 11.

  342. You see,

  343. if our Father

  344. is

  345. Lord of heaven

  346. and earth,

  347. then we can pray

  348. with confidence.

  349. We can say,

  350. verse 9,

  351. I say to you,

  352. ask and it will

  353. be given to you.

  354. Seek and you

  355. will find.

  356. Knock and the door

  357. will be open

  358. to you.

  359. We are invited

  360. to come and ask

  361. our Father,

  362. who is all-powerful

  363. and all-controlling.

  364. So we pray

  365. with a confidence.

  366. Not a confidence

  367. in us,

  368. but a confidence

  369. in our Father.

  370. We pray

  371. with this

  372. expectation

  373. that God

  374. can

  375. intervene

  376. into this world,

  377. into any

  378. situation,

  379. and he can

  380. intervene

  381. into our lives

  382. and into the

  383. lives of other

  384. people.

  385. That's why

  386. we pray

  387. for rulers

  388. and authorities.

  389. That's why

  390. we pray

  391. for countries,

  392. because he

  393. can change

  394. the heart

  395. of a ruler.

  396. He can change

  397. the direction

  398. of a nation.

  399. He can change

  400. the actions

  401. of evil people

  402. and he can

  403. turn it to good.

  404. He can change

  405. the lives

  406. of ordinary

  407. people so

  408. that they

  409. too become

  410. followers of

  411. Jesus and

  412. that they

  413. become like

  414. Jesus.

  415. And he can

  416. change you

  417. and me.

  418. He can change

  419. our sinful

  420. habits so

  421. that we

  422. become the

  423. kind of

  424. people he

  425. wants us

  426. to be.

  427. You know,

  428. sometimes we

  429. don't pray

  430. because we

  431. don't really

  432. believe our

  433. Father is

  434. Lord of

  435. heaven and

  436. earth.

  437. Do you

  438. believe he's

  439. Lord of

  440. heaven and

  441. earth?

  442. That he's

  443. all powerful

  444. and all

  445. controlling?

  446. A writer

  447. put it like

  448. this.

  449. We

  450. overestimate

  451. what we

  452. can do

  453. and we

  454. underestimate

  455. what God

  456. can do.

  457. We don't

  458. pray simply

  459. because we

  460. think it's

  461. all about

  462. what I

  463. have to

  464. do and

  465. somehow

  466. that God

  467. is just

  468. not able

  469. to do

  470. it.

  471. We

  472. overestimate

  473. what we

  474. can do

  475. and we

  476. underestimate

  477. what God

  478. can do so

  479. we don't

  480. pray.

  481. But here

  482. we have this

  483. wonderful

  484. invitation.

  485. That's what

  486. Luke 11 is

  487. about, this

  488. invitation to

  489. pray

  490. independence

  491. on an

  492. all-powerful,

  493. all-controlling

  494. God.

  495. we can

  496. come with

  497. confidence,

  498. we can

  499. come with

  500. an expectation

  501. that God

  502. who made

  503. the universe

  504. can intervene

  505. in our lives

  506. and in our

  507. world.

  508. Verse 10,

  509. for everyone

  510. who asks

  511. receives

  512. and he

  513. who seeks

  514. finds

  515. and to him

  516. who knocks

  517. the door

  518. will be

  519. opened.

  520. So,

  521. prayer is

  522. nothing more

  523. than a

  524. child

  525. asking their

  526. father for

  527. help.

  528. We pray

  529. as children

  530. to our

  531. father

  532. independence

  533. but with

  534. confidence

  535. and expectation.

  536. And second,

  537. we pray

  538. in humility.

  539. When

  540. we pray

  541. we are

  542. talking to

  543. our father

  544. but we

  545. don't come

  546. demanding

  547. and insisting

  548. from our

  549. father that

  550. we get

  551. everything

  552. that we

  553. ask for.

  554. It doesn't

  555. work like

  556. that.

  557. Look how

  558. Jesus

  559. prayed.

  560. So,

  561. in verse 1

  562. of chapter 11

  563. we just get

  564. this little

  565. insight.

  566. One day

  567. Jesus was

  568. praying

  569. in a

  570. certain

  571. place.

  572. Now,

  573. if you

  574. read through

  575. Luke,

  576. you'll

  577. discover

  578. that Jesus

  579. prays in

  580. all kinds

  581. of different

  582. ways.

  583. In Luke

  584. 5,

  585. 16,

  586. we read

  587. there that

  588. Jesus

  589. prayed on

  590. his own

  591. and in

  592. a solitary

  593. place.

  594. In Luke

    Luke 9:28

  595. 9,

  596. verse 28,

  597. we read

  598. that Jesus

  599. prayed up

  600. a mountain

  601. and with

  602. his disciples.

  603. Sometimes

  604. he prayed

  605. really short

  606. prayers,

  607. sometimes

  608. he was

  609. praying

  610. all night

  611. long.

  612. But the

  613. place of

  614. prayer and

  615. the length

  616. of prayer

  617. is not

  618. the issue.

  619. Look at

  620. Luke

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  621. chapter 22.

  622. Jesus

  623. was a

  624. prayer.

  625. And if

  626. Jesus

  627. needed to

  628. pray,

  629. how much

  630. more do

  631. we need

  632. to pray?

  633. And here

  634. in Luke

  635. 22,

  636. we see

  637. how Jesus

  638. prayed with

  639. humility.

  640. Verse 39,

  641. this is just

  642. before his

  643. death.

  644. He's facing

  645. into his

  646. coming death.

  647. Chapter 22,

  648. verse 39,

  649. Jesus went

  650. out as

  651. usual to

  652. the Mount

  653. of Olives.

  654. That was

  655. one of the

  656. places he

  657. often went

  658. to pray.

  659. And his

  660. disciples

  661. followed him.

  662. On reaching

  663. the place,

  664. he said to

  665. them,

  666. pray that

  667. you will

  668. not fall

  669. into

  670. temptation.

  671. He

  672. withdrew

  673. about a

  674. stone's

  675. throw

  676. beyond

  677. them,

  678. knelt

  679. down,

  680. and prayed.

  681. And here's

  682. what he

  683. prayed.

  684. Father,

  685. it's that

  686. same word

  687. again,

  688. this cry

  689. of help.

  690. Father,

  691. help.

  692. If you

  693. are willing,

  694. take this

  695. cup from

  696. me.

  697. Jesus is

  698. about to

  699. face into

  700. the most

  701. horrendous,

  702. the most

  703. difficult

  704. situation

  705. in his

  706. life.

  707. He is

  708. about to

  709. face the

  710. rejection

  711. of all

  712. his family

  713. and his

  714. friends.

  715. He's

  716. about to

  717. face the

  718. insults

  719. and

  720. injustices

  721. of false

  722. accusations.

  723. He is

  724. about to

  725. face the

  726. physical

  727. torture,

  728. of beatings,

  729. of a

  730. crown of

  731. thorns being

  732. crushed in

  733. his head,

  734. being nailed

  735. to a

  736. cross.

  737. And most

  738. of all,

  739. he is

  740. going to

  741. face the

  742. judgment

  743. of God

  744. for us,

  745. being

  746. abandoned

  747. by the

  748. Father

  749. for us.

  750. This is

  751. physical,

  752. emotional,

  753. mental,

  754. and spiritual

  755. suffering in

  756. its ultimate

  757. and greatest

  758. form.

  759. and so

  760. he prays,

  761. verse 42,

  762. Father,

  763. help me.

  764. If you

  765. are willing,

  766. take this

  767. cup from

  768. me.

  769. Do not

  770. let me have

  771. to go

  772. through this.

  773. He knows

  774. his Father

  775. is Lord

  776. of heaven

  777. and earth.

  778. He knows

  779. that his

  780. Father is

  781. all-powerful

  782. and all-controlling.

  783. He knows

  784. he can do

  785. anything,

  786. but look

  787. what he says

  788. in his

  789. prayer.

  790. Look at the

  791. last part

  792. of verse

  793. 42.

  794. Yet

  795. not

  796. my

  797. will,

  798. but

  799. yours

  800. be done.

  801. Incredible.

  802. Jesus

  803. doesn't

  804. come

  805. demanding

  806. and

  807. insisting.

  808. He

  809. doesn't

  810. whine

  811. and

  812. whinge.

  813. He's

  814. not

  815. stamping

  816. his

  817. feet

  818. in

  819. protest

  820. like

  821. a

  822. spoiled

  823. child.

  824. He

  825. humbly

  826. submits

  827. himself

  828. to

  829. his

  830. loving

  831. Father

  832. who

  833. always

  834. does

  835. what

  836. is

  837. right

  838. and

  839. best

  840. even

  841. in

  842. times

  843. of

  844. great

  845. suffering.

  846. Not

  847. what I

  848. want,

  849. but what

  850. you want,

  851. Father.

  852. Not

  853. what

  854. pleases

  855. me,

  856. but what

  857. will

  858. please

  859. you,

  860. Father.

  861. Not

  862. what I

  863. demand,

  864. but what

  865. will bring

  866. glory and

  867. honour to

  868. you,

  869. Father.

  870. you

  871. see,

  872. all of

  873. our

  874. prayers

  875. should

  876. be

  877. prayed

  878. with

  879. humility.

  880. Not

  881. demanding

  882. and

  883. insisting

  884. and

  885. telling

  886. God

  887. that

  888. he

  889. should

  890. do

  891. this

  892. and

  893. he

  894. should

  895. do

  896. that,

  897. but

  898. a

  899. simple

  900. not

  901. what

  902. I

  903. will,

  904. but

  905. what

  906. you

  907. will.

  908. Back

  909. in

  910. Luke

  911. 11,

  912. we

  913. are

  914. told

  915. what

  916. we

  917. can

  918. ask

  919. for

  920. and

  921. know

  922. that

  923. we

  924. will

  925. receive

  926. it.

  927. In

  928. verse

  929. 13,

  930. we

  931. are

  932. told

  933. how

  934. much

  935. more

  936. will

  937. your

  938. Father

  939. in

  940. heaven

  941. give

  942. the

  943. Holy

  944. Spirit

  945. to

  946. those

  947. who

  948. ask

  949. him.

  950. Now

  951. why

  952. would

  953. he

  954. be

  955. telling

  956. us

  957. to

  958. ask

  959. for

  960. the

  961. Holy

  962. Spirit?

  963. What's

  964. the

  965. Spirit

  966. got

  967. to

  968. do

  969. with

  970. prayer?

  971. Well

  972. this

  973. is

  974. really

  975. important

  976. and

  977. I

  978. want

  979. us

  980. to

  981. follow

  982. this

  983. through

  984. in

  985. line

  986. with

  987. our

  988. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  989. chapter

  990. 8

  991. And

  992. we

  993. see

  994. here

  995. the

  996. reason

  997. or

  998. the

  999. purpose

  1000. of

  1001. asking

  1002. for

  1003. the

  1004. Holy

  1005. Spirit

  1006. when

  1007. we

  1008. come

  1009. to

  1010. pray.

  1011. Romans

    Romans 8:26

  1012. 8

  1013. verse

  1014. 26

  1015. In

  1016. the

  1017. same

  1018. way

  1019. the

  1020. Spirit

  1021. helps

  1022. us

  1023. in

  1024. our

  1025. weakness

  1026. so

  1027. it's

  1028. talking

  1029. about

  1030. times

  1031. of

  1032. real

  1033. need

  1034. and

  1035. struggle

  1036. the

  1037. Spirit

  1038. helps

  1039. us

  1040. in

  1041. our

  1042. weakness

  1043. we

  1044. do

  1045. not

  1046. know

  1047. what

  1048. we

  1049. ought

  1050. to

  1051. pray

  1052. for

  1053. but

  1054. the

  1055. Spirit

  1056. himself

  1057. intercedes

  1058. for

  1059. us

  1060. with

  1061. groans

  1062. that

  1063. words

  1064. cannot

  1065. express

  1066. and

  1067. he

  1068. that's

  1069. the

  1070. Father

  1071. who

  1072. searches

  1073. our

  1074. hearts

  1075. knows

  1076. the

  1077. mind

  1078. of

  1079. the

  1080. Spirit

  1081. because

  1082. the

  1083. Spirit

  1084. intercedes

  1085. for

  1086. the

  1087. saints

  1088. people

  1089. like

  1090. you

  1091. and

  1092. me

  1093. in

  1094. accordance

  1095. with

  1096. God's

  1097. will

  1098. to

  1099. pray

  1100. and

  1101. they

  1102. don't

  1103. know

  1104. what

  1105. we

  1106. ought

  1107. to

  1108. pray

  1109. for

  1110. have

  1111. you

  1112. ever

  1113. been

  1114. in

  1115. that

  1116. time

  1117. in

  1118. that

  1119. experience

  1120. the

  1121. situation

  1122. is

  1123. just

  1124. so

  1125. big

  1126. it

  1127. seems

  1128. to

  1129. be

  1130. so

  1131. out

  1132. of

  1133. control

  1134. we

  1135. cannot

  1136. put

  1137. a

  1138. finger

  1139. on

  1140. what

  1141. the

  1142. problem

  1143. is

  1144. we

  1145. are

  1146. just

  1147. overwhelmed

  1148. with

  1149. everything

  1150. that

  1151. is

  1152. going

  1153. on

  1154. in

  1155. our

  1156. lives

  1157. and

  1158. all

  1159. around

  1160. us

  1161. and

  1162. we

  1163. don't

  1164. know

  1165. what

  1166. to

  1167. pray

  1168. for

1169. we don't even know where to begin.

1170. And at that moment, within our hearts,

1171. it's almost as if it comes out in groans and agonies of cry

1172. or perhaps a shout of frustration.

1173. At that moment, verse 26,

1174. the Spirit himself intercedes for us.

1175. It's literally saying to us,

  1176. he joins with us.

1177. The Spirit comes alongside us.

1178. And he begins to pray for us on our behalf

1179. what is good and what is right.

1180. Because he knows our hearts,

1181. he knows what we need right then in our lives

1182. and he prays for that, what is good and right.

1183. But there's more than that.

1184. You see, even if we do pray,

1185. sometimes in those moments of crisis and difficulty and struggle,

1186. sometimes what we do pray,

1187. we can even pray for the wrong thing.

1188. Or we even get our prayers in the wrong way.

1189. But the Spirit takes those prayers.

1190. Look at verse 27, the end of verse 27.

1191. And the Spirit intercedes for the saints

1192. in accordance with God's will.

1193. It's telling us that he takes our prayers,

1194. even the wrong prayers that we say.

1195. But he knows the motive.

  1196. He knows the heart.

1197. He knows that we're genuine.

1198. He knows that we want what's right and good.

1199. And he takes our prayers,

  1200. even the wrong ones,

  1201. and he translates them.

1202. He brings them to the Father

1203. so that the prayers we pray

  1204. are the right prayers.

1205. And they are according to God's good and perfect will.

  1206. Isn't that incredible?

  1207. The Spirit comes alongside,

  1208. joins with us,

1209. and prays what we should pray,

1210. and even takes our wrong prayers

1211. and makes them the right kind of prayer

1212. so that they are in line with God's will.

1213. This is a prayer of humility.

  1214. That is saying,

  1215. I don't always know what is God's will.

1216. I don't know what is right or best in this situation

1217. or in my life or in their life,

  1218. but the Spirit does.

1219. And because the Spirit knows

  1220. what the Father wants

1221. and what the Father wills,

1222. the Spirit will always pray

  1223. what the Father wants

1224. and what the Father wills.

1225. So that's why we come in humility

1226. and we pray with that simple request

  1227. for the Holy Spirit.

1228. And he will pour out that Holy Spirit

  1229. generously upon us

1230. so that all of our prayers

1231. are according to God's good and perfect will.

  1232. Now that means

1233. we don't always get what we ask for

  1234. or what we want.

1235. Our Father doesn't hand out

1236. everything and anything that we say we want.

  1237. But it does mean

1238. that he will always give to us

1239. what is good and right and best for us.

  1240. He will always give

1241. what is according to his good and perfect will.

  1242. He knows his children.

1243. He knows what we need.

1244. And he will give us

1245. and not withhold what we need.

1246. And so we pray in humility.

1247. But we also pray continually.

  1248. Back in Luke 11

1249. as Jesus taught his disciples to pray

  1250. he says to them

  1251. in chapter 11 verse 9

  1252. I say to you

  1253. ask

1254. and it will be given

1255. seek and you will find

  1256. knock

1257. and the door will be opened.

  1258. In reading through this

  1259. and studying it

  1260. it became clear that

  1261. this is a present

  1262. continuous asking.

  1263. It's not just a one off

  1264. ask

1265. and then forget about it

  1266. and never ask again.

  1267. In other words

1268. it's an encouragement to us

  1269. to keep on praying

  1270. and not give up.

  1271. We continually ask

  1272. we continually seek

  1273. we continually knock

1274. we continually speak to our Father.

1275. You see as we ask

  1276. sometimes the answer

  1277. might be simply this

  1278. not yet my child

  1279. not yet.

1280. And so we pray continually

  1281. trusting in God's timing.

1282. Our Father will always give us

  1283. what is good

  1284. when it is right.

  1285. Always gives us

  1286. what is good

  1287. when it is right.

  1288. And so sometimes

  1289. our experience

  1290. will be like this

  1291. we pray for something

  1292. and we receive it

  1293. right now.

  1294. We receive it

  1295. straight away.

1296. We pray for an end

1297. to some kind of suffering

  1298. or difficulty

  1299. in our lives.

  1300. We pray for God

  1301. to do a work

  1302. in somebody's life

  1303. and God intervenes

  1304. and it happens.

  1305. The suffering ends.

  1306. The person becomes

  1307. a Christian.

1308. We pray for a change

  1309. in a circumstance

  1310. and God works

  1311. to bring something

  1312. different about.

  1313. He answers.

  1314. He does it.

  1315. But sometimes

  1316. what we ask for

  1317. the answer will be

  1318. not yet

  1319. it will come later.

  1320. Tim Chester

  1321. in his book

  1322. You Can Pray

  1323. I recommend it

  1324. to you

  1325. as a very

  1326. easy read.

  1327. He says this

  1328. about waiting

  1329. and praying

  1330. continually.

  1331. God is waiting

  1332. until the time

  1333. is right.

  1334. when you pray

  1335. for justice

  1336. the ultimate

  1337. answer may be

  1338. the final judgment.

  1339. When you pray

  1340. for peace

  1341. the ultimate

  1342. answer may be

  1343. the reign

  1344. of the Lord Jesus.

  1345. When you pray

  1346. for health

  1347. and healing

  1348. the ultimate

  1349. answer may be

  1350. your resurrection

  1351. body.

  1352. When you pray

  1353. for joy

  1354. the ultimate

  1355. answer may be

  1356. the wedding

  1357. feast of the Lamb.

  1358. And when you pray

  1359. for a sense

  1360. of God's

  1361. presence

  1362. the ultimate

  1363. answer may be

  1364. the day

  1365. when heaven

  1366. comes to earth

  1367. and a loud

  1368. voice from the

  1369. throne says

  1370. look

  1371. God's dwelling

  1372. is now

  1373. among the people

  1374. and he will

  1375. dwell with them

  1376. they will be

  1377. his people

  1378. and God himself

  1379. will be with them

  1380. and be their

  1381. gods.

  1382. we pray

  1383. continually

  1384. because we

  1385. can be assured

  1386. that God

  1387. will always

  1388. give us

  1389. what is good

  1390. when it is

  1391. right

  1392. and when it

  1393. is best

  1394. for us.

  1395. Verse 10

  1396. For everyone

  1397. who asks

  1398. receives

  1399. and he who

  1400. seeks finds

  1401. and to him

  1402. who knocks

  1403. the door

  1404. will be

  1405. opened.

  1406. we are

  1407. invited to

  1408. come to

  1409. a father

  1410. as children

  1411. who pray

  1412. to their

  1413. father

  1414. asking

  1415. for help

  1416. he gives

  1417. good gifts

  1418. but we

  1419. come to him

  1420. with

  1421. dependence

  1422. he is the

  1423. sovereign lord

  1424. of heaven

  1425. and earth

  1426. he is the

  1427. one with all

  1428. power who

  1429. controls all

  1430. things

  1431. we can

  1432. come with

  1433. confidence

  1434. with an

  1435. expectancy

  1436. that he

  1437. can intervene

  1438. into this

  1439. world and

  1440. into our

  1441. lives

  1442. but we

  1443. pray

  1444. with humility

  1445. not what I

  1446. want

  1447. but what you

  1448. want

  1449. what will

  1450. bring you

  1451. glory

  1452. what is best

  1453. for you

  1454. and what will

  1455. be best

  1456. for me

  1457. and we

  1458. do not

  1459. give up

  1460. in our

  1461. prayer

  1462. because he

  1463. will always

  1464. give what

  1465. is good

  1466. when

  1467. it is

  1468. right

  1469. let us

  1470. pray

  1471. our

  1472. father

  1473. god

  1474. forgive us

  1475. for the

  1476. times where

  1477. we

  1478. overestimate

  1479. what we

  1480. can do

  1481. and we

  1482. underestimate

  1483. what you

  1484. can do

  1485. for you

  1486. are lord

  1487. of heaven

  1488. and earth

  1489. all power

  1490. and all

  1491. authority

  1492. belongs to

  1493. you

  1494. you control

  1495. all things

  1496. you are in

  1497. charge of

  1498. our own

  1499. lives

  1500. so teach

  1501. us to

  1502. come and

  1503. pray in

  1504. confidence

  1505. but father

  1506. help us to

  1507. get our

  1508. relationship

  1509. with you

  1510. right

  1511. help us

  1512. that we

  1513. might come

  1514. in humility

  1515. that every

  1516. prayer will

  1517. be not

  1518. what I

  1519. want

  1520. but what

  1521. you will

  1522. and what

  1523. you desire

  1524. change us

  1525. so that we

  1526. fit in with

  1527. your purposes

  1528. and your

  1529. plans

  1530. and thank

  1531. you

  1532. that all

  1533. of our

  1534. prayers

  1535. prayers

  1536. whether we

  1537. pray once

  1538. or pray

  1539. for many

  1540. many years

  1541. you will

  1542. answer and

  1543. you will

  1544. give all

  1545. that is

  1546. good and

  1547. right

  1548. thank you

  1549. that we

  1550. can come

  1551. to you as

  1552. father

  1553. thank you

  1554. that you

  1555. give us

  1556. help when

  1557. we ask

  1558. and help

  1559. us

  1560. that we

  1561. may go

  1562. on talking

  1563. to you

  1564. through

  1565. this week

  1566. in jesus name

  1567. we pray

  1568. amen

  1569. do

  1570. need

  1571. to

  1572. care

  1573. where

  1574. you

  1575. your

  1576. train

  1577. or

  1578. you
