  1. This one here that I'm holding up, or not sure what page number, if you've got a different one.

  2. So Acts 1094.

  3. And on the little sheet here that I'm holding up, with Alex's story on the inside,

  4. on the very back, there's a place there where you can take notes.

  5. So if you want a pen, that's what the box is being passed around.

  6. If you want a pen and you want to take notes or jot down anything, just put up your hand and you can get a pen.

  7. But you can fill that sheet out on the back there or just jot down any notes or any questions that you might have after our talk.

  8. And I'm going to ask Stephen, who's going to come up and who's going to read for us from Acts.

  9. Thank you, Stephen.

  10. Acts chapter 2, verse 37.

    Acts 2:37

  11. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles,

  12. Brothers, what shall we do?

  13. Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins.

  14. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  15. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call.

  16. With many other words, he warned them and he pleaded with them.

  17. Save yourself from this corrupt generation.

  18. Those who accepted his message were baptized and about 3,000 were added to their number that day.

  19. Thank you, Stephen.

  20. Well, I'm going to pray and then we're going to look at that passage that was just read and see what it has to say to explain baptism to us.

  21. So let's pray again.

  22. Our Father God, we thank you for your word.

  23. We thank you for the Bible.

  24. We thank you that it is written in our own language and in a way that we understand.

  25. But most of all, we thank you that this is the way in which you, the creator God, speaks to us.

  26. This is your word to us.

  27. And so we pray for the help of your Holy Spirit to understand that, not just with our heads,

  28. but that it would change our hearts and change our lives.

  29. So that we too understand what it is to follow Jesus and to make him the most important person in our whole life.

  30. So help us now, we pray in Jesus' name.

  31. Amen.

  32. Well, the other day when I went to collect this portable poo over here for today's baptism,

  33. I was loading it into the boot of the car because it all breaks down very neatly.

  34. And this man was walking by and he stopped and he asked me,

  35. what is it?

  36. So I began to explain what it was and was trying to explain baptism.

  37. And this is what he says, oh, it's a jacuzzi.

  38. Well, I hope I do a much better explanation this morning than what I was obviously making then.

  39. And he started to make some joke about making lots of bubbles.

  40. Well, in case you think Alex is going to be coming up and having a jacuzzi while we all watch,

  41. let me explain.

  42. Again, baptism is all about a person, Jesus Christ.

  43. In the book of Acts, which we just had read to us,

  44. the whole book is actually a story about the good news of Jesus

  45. and how it begins to spread all the way across the world to all kinds of people in all kinds of places.

  46. And as people hear the good news about Jesus,

  47. as they hear, in response, people get baptised.

  48. So in chapter 2, verse 41, of what we just had read,

  49. look at what it says there.

  50. Those who accepted his message, that's the message of Jesus Christ, were baptised.

  51. So they heard and they were baptised.

  52. Or let me give you another example.

  53. You can flick on a couple of pages to Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  54. So keep going in your Bible until you see a big number 8 on your page

  55. and then find a smaller number which says 35.

  56. So Acts 8, verse 35.

    Acts 8:35

  57. This is a different person speaking.

  58. This person is called Philip and he's speaking about Jesus to a very wealthy and important man

  59. from Ethiopia.

  60. And he's been reading the Bible and then, verse 35, it says,

  61. Philip began with that very passage of scripture

  62. and told him the good news about Jesus.

  63. And as they travelled along the roads,

  64. they came to some water

  65. and the eunuch said,

  66. Look, here's water.

  67. Why shouldn't I be baptised?

  68. And he gave the orders to stop the chariot.

  69. And then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water

  70. and Philip baptised him.

  71. So they heard the good news about Jesus

  72. and they were baptised.

  73. Now although Alex is going to be getting baptised very shortly,

  74. it's actually not about him.

  75. It's all about Jesus Christ.

  76. In fact, baptism is a wonderful picture

  77. about the good news of Jesus Christ.

  78. It pictures two things.

  79. First, believing in Jesus.

  80. It's a picture of believing in Jesus.

  81. Now when we talk about believing in Jesus,

  82. we don't just mean we believe that Jesus exists.

  83. If we were to do a survey,

  84. lots of people would say,

  85. Yeah, I believe Jesus exists.

  86. It's actually about entrusting your whole life to Jesus.

  87. So let me give you an example.

  88. If your house was on fire

  89. and you were up at the top window

  90. shouting for help

  91. and the fire brigade arrives

  92. and the fireman comes along

  93. and he puts up his ladder

  94. and he climbs up

  95. and there he is right beside you at the window,

  96. it's no good at that point saying,

  97. Oh, I believe in firemen

  98. and telling all the rest of the people,

  99. Look, a fireman!

  100. I believe in firemen.

  101. No, if you really believe in firemen,

  102. you'll jump into his arms

  103. and let him rescue you

  104. or jump onto his shoulder

  105. or whatever you want to do.

  106. But you will entrust your life to him.

  107. And in the same way,

  108. if we believe in Jesus,

  109. that means we entrust our whole life to him

  110. to rescue us.

  111. And that's essentially what this passage in Acts chapter 2 is about.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  112. Let me explain.

  113. Look at verse 37,

  114. the first part of our reading.

  115. Acts chapter 2, verse 37.

    Acts 2:37

  116. Sorry, you need to go back there

  117. and we'll stay in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  118. Acts chapter 2, verse 37.

    Acts 2:37

  119. It says there right at the beginning,

  120. When the people heard this,

  121. well, what have they just heard?

  122. When they heard this,

  123. what have they just been hearing about?

  124. Well, Peter is the speaker

  125. and he's been telling them

  126. all about the good news of Jesus.

  127. And it starts back in verse 22.

  128. So have a look at verse 22.

  129. Peter began to explain who Jesus is.

  130. Men of Israel, he said,

  131. listen to this.

  132. And we need to listen too.

  133. Jesus of Nazareth was a man

  134. accredited by God to you by miracles,

  135. wonders and signs

  136. which God did among you through him

  137. as you yourselves know.

  138. You see, when Jesus came onto this earth,

  139. when he lived his life on this planet,

  140. he did many miracles and wonders.

  141. We may have read about it

  142. or heard about it.

  143. By a simple word,

  144. by just speaking,

  145. he calmed a storm.

  146. By a simple word,

  147. he silenced demons

  148. and he controlled evil.

  149. And by a touch of his hand,

  150. he healed people.

  151. And by a touch of his hand,

  152. he could even raise the dead.

  153. And all of these amazing miracles and wonders,

  154. look at verse 22,

  155. were signs.

  156. These signs,

  157. these miracles,

  158. were pointing

  159. to who Jesus is.

  160. You see,

  161. Jesus was doing

  162. what only God could do.

  163. Only God

  164. could calm the storms.

  165. Only God

  166. could raise the dead.

  167. So here was Jesus,

  168. God,

  169. in human form,

  170. walking on the earth,

  171. a person just like you and me,

  172. controlling the world

  173. and controlling

  174. all that was wrong

  175. and putting it right.

  176. And he was showing everybody

  177. who he was.

  178. That he was God

  179. come down to earth.

  180. But look what happened

  181. to this Jesus

  182. in verse 23.

  183. Let's read verse 23.

  184. This man,

  185. this Jesus,

  186. was handed over to you

  187. by God's set purpose

  188. and foreknowledge

  189. and you,

  190. with the help of wicked men,

  191. put him to death

  192. by nailing him to the cross.

  193. Incredible, isn't it?

  194. He was going around

  195. healing people,

  196. raising the dead,

  197. calming storms,

  198. silencing demons

  199. and then people

  200. put him to death.

  201. He was a man

  202. who had done nothing wrong.

  203. No fault

  204. could be found in him.

  205. He was perfect

  206. without sin.

  207. But yet,

  208. he was put to death

  209. and verse 23 tells us

  210. they nailed him

  211. to the cross.

  212. Why?

  213. Why would they do this

  214. to this man,

  215. Jesus?

  216. Well,

  217. look at verse 23

  218. at the very beginning.

  219. It tells us

  220. that Jesus' death

  221. was actually

  222. part

  223. of God's plan.

  224. It wasn't an accident.

  225. It wasn't a mistake.

  226. But it was all part

  227. of God's perfect plan.

  228. But what does

  229. his death mean?

  230. Why did he have to die?

  231. Well,

  232. listen to this.

  233. This is the way

  234. Alex puts it

  235. in his story.

  236. You can read it

  237. afterwards

  238. in the middle pages.

  239. This is what Alex says.

  240. The death of Jesus

  241. wasn't just

  242. an ordinary death.

  243. Unlike most deaths,

  244. it was a good thing

  245. because it was for us

  246. so that we could have

  247. eternal life.

  248. You see,

  249. Jesus' death

  250. on the cross

  251. was God's means

  252. of dealing with

  253. the problem

  254. of sin.

  255. Let me try

  256. and explain that

  257. to us

  258. a little bit better.

  259. I've got a CD here

  260. or a DVD

  261. if you like.

  262. And I want you

  263. to imagine

  264. that this is

  265. a record

  266. of your life

  267. up to this

  268. very point.

  269. So that means,

  270. Alex,

  271. everything

  272. you've ever said

  273. or anything

  274. that we've ever said

  275. is on here,

  276. public or private.

  277. It's been recorded

  278. and it's on here.

  279. Everything

  280. that you've ever done

  281. has been videoed,

  282. public or private.

  283. And it's all on here

  284. to watch.

  285. Everything.

  286. But not just

  287. everything you've said

  288. or everything you've done,

  289. everything you've thought.

  290. So this is a very clever CD

  291. or DVD.

  292. It knows your mind

  293. and it's got

  294. every single thought

  295. recorded here.

  296. Now,

  297. who of us

  298. would like

  299. our life

  300. uploaded

  301. onto YouTube

  302. or published

  303. on Facebook?

  304. Would you?

  305. I'd like

  306. some parts

  307. of my life

  308. on YouTube

  309. but there's

  310. an awful lot

  311. that I would not

  312. want anybody

  313. to know about.

  314. And I think

  315. Ewan

  316. would be

  317. exactly

  318. the same.

  319. You see,

  320. every one of us

  321. has things in our life

  322. that we're deeply ashamed of,

  323. embarrassed about,

  324. things we do wrong,

  325. things we say wrong,

  326. things we think

  327. that are wrong.

  328. And the problem

  329. with that is,

  330. we call it sin,

  331. is it acts as a barrier.

  332. So if God is there

  333. and we are here,

  334. it's a barrier.

  335. It cuts in the way

  336. of a relationship

  337. with God.

  338. We cannot enjoy God.

  339. We cannot know God.

  340. We cannot love God

  341. as we ought to.

  342. So why did Jesus die?

  343. Well,

  344. when Jesus came,

  345. he was perfect,

  346. wasn't he?

  347. And he takes

  348. my record

  349. and your record

  350. of your life

  351. and he takes it

  352. on himself,

  353. all the bad things

  354. that we've ever done

  355. and Jesus

  356. is punished.

  357. He takes the blame

  358. for all the wrong things

  359. we have ever done.

  360. That's why he died

  361. on the cross.

  362. But not only that,

  363. listen to this,

  364. it gets even better.

  365. Jesus doesn't just

  366. take our record.

  367. I want you to change

  368. this around now.

  369. Imagine this is

  370. the record of Jesus.

  371. His perfect,

  372. pure,

  373. good life.

  374. Nothing wrong.

  375. Sinless,

  376. perfect in every way.

  377. That record

  378. is now given to us.

  379. So when God

  380. looks at us,

  381. he doesn't see our life,

  382. he actually sees

  383. the life of Jesus.

  384. The record of Jesus

  385. is given

  386. to us.

  387. Listen to how Alex

  388. puts it

  389. in his story again.

  390. He says this,

  391. Jesus died for us.

  392. He died to take away

  393. our sins

  394. so that we could

  395. have eternal life.

  396. Jesus died for all

  397. the sins I committed

  398. in the past

  399. and all the sins

  400. I'm going to commit

  401. or continue to commit.

  402. He took the blame

  403. for all the wrong things

  404. I have done.

  405. Without him doing so,

  406. there would be no one

  407. to take away my sins

  408. so I would have

  409. no chance

  410. of getting into heaven.

  411. Isn't that incredible?

  412. What a wonderful story

  413. to be able to tell.

  414. That's why Jesus

  415. is the most important person

  416. to Alex's life.

  417. But Jesus didn't just

  418. stay dead, did he?

  419. Thankfully,

  420. look at verse 24.

  421. God raised him

  422. from the dead,

  423. freeing him

  424. from the agony

  425. of death

  426. because

  427. it was impossible

  428. for death

  429. to keep its hold

  430. on him.

  431. Jesus did die

  432. but God raised him

  433. from the dead.

  434. Now this is meant

  435. to be a time

  436. of celebration

  437. and we don't really

  438. want to be talking

  439. about death,

  440. do we?

  441. Because death means

  442. the end of relationships.

  443. It means

  444. separation

  445. from those

  446. we love the most,

  447. sadness,

  448. heartache

  449. and pain.

  450. And we can find

  451. a cure

  452. for most things

  453. in life,

  454. for most illnesses

  455. and diseases,

  456. we can find a cure

  457. but nobody

  458. has ever come up

  459. with a cure

  460. for death.

  461. Except

  462. when Jesus

  463. rose from the grave

  464. he defeated

  465. death.

  466. He destroyed

  467. death.

  468. He beat it.

  469. Or as it says

  470. in verse 24,

  471. it was impossible

  472. for death

  473. to keep its hold

  474. on him.

  475. He broke out

  476. of its chains.

  477. He defeated it.

  478. And he offers

  479. that to us.

  480. So here we have

  481. this wonderful picture,

  482. this wonderful story

  483. of Jesus

  484. who comes to us,

  485. the God-man,

  486. to defeat

  487. or to deal

  488. with our sin

  489. by dying on the cross

  490. and to defeat

  491. death for us

  492. by rising again

  493. from the grave.

  494. Now that is

  495. good news.

  496. But what do we do

  497. with this good news?

  498. Is it just information

  499. for our heads

  500. and go,

  501. hey, that was a nice story

  502. that I heard

  503. on Sunday morning?

  504. No, it requires

  505. a response.

  506. Look at verse 37

  507. of Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  508. When the people

  509. heard this,

  510. so when they heard

  511. this good news

  512. about Jesus,

  513. his life,

  514. his death,

  515. his resurrection,

  516. they were cut

  517. to the heart.

  518. They were deeply

  519. affected in their lives

  520. and they said

  521. to Peter

  522. and the other apostles,

  523. brothers,

  524. what shall we do?

  525. And Peter replied,

  526. repent

  527. and be baptized

  528. every one of you

  529. in the name

  530. of Jesus Christ

  531. for the forgiveness

  532. of your sins

  533. and you will receive

  534. the gift

  535. of the Holy Spirit.

  536. it.

  537. So, in response,

  538. there's two things.

  539. Repent

  540. and be baptized.

  541. Now, repentance,

  542. a religious word,

  543. but it's a double action.

  544. It means two things.

  545. It means

  546. turning away

  547. from something

  548. or someone,

  549. turning away

  550. from believing

  551. in yourself

  552. and turning

  553. to believe

  554. and entrust

  555. your life

  556. to Jesus.

  557. I don't know

  558. if you know

  559. that Alex

  560. is presently

  561. learning to drive.

  562. I think he reckons

  563. himself to be

  564. a good driver.

  565. And for Alex,

  566. he's,

  567. well,

  568. he can't just

  569. have an ordinary car.

  570. He's got to have

  571. a BMW E30.

  572. If you don't know

  573. what that is,

  574. it's one of those

  575. old models

  576. with the square back

  577. and those square lights

  578. and maybe a flat top

  579. as well.

  580. Yeah, yeah,

  581. you'd like that.

  582. Okay.

  583. Now, imagine Alex

  584. has just passed his test

  585. and he's driving

  586. along down the road

  587. elbow out the window.

  588. You know how it is.

  589. And he realises

  590. he's gone the wrong way.

  591. So he throws it

  592. into reverse,

  593. tears backward,

  594. pulls up the handbrake,

  595. does a 180 degree

  596. turn.

  597. Don't worry,

  598. mum and dad,

  599. he won't do that.

  600. Just an illustration.

  601. And he drives off

  602. down the road

  603. in the opposite direction

  604. to what he was going.

  605. That's what repentance is.

  606. It's a sudden

  607. and radical change

  608. in direction.

  609. The conscious moment of

  610. I'm going in the wrong direction,

  611. I need to turn around

  612. and go in the right direction.

  613. So you turn around

  614. and you believe,

  615. you entrust your life

  616. to Jesus.

  617. No longer do we believe

  618. in our own ability

  619. to deal with sin and death.

  620. Instead,

  621. we throw ourselves,

  622. we entrust our life

  623. to Jesus

  624. who deals

  625. with the punishment

  626. that we deserve.

  627. He takes the blame

  628. for the record

  629. of our wrong

  630. and he destroys death

  631. that we can never defeat

  632. on our own.

  633. So in response,

  634. we repent,

  635. we say sorry,

  636. we entrust our life

  637. to Jesus.

  638. But it also says,

  639. doesn't it,

  640. in verse 37,

  641. repent and

  642. be baptised.

  643. Now baptism

  644. is very simply

  645. a visible demonstration

  646. of believing in Jesus.

  647. It's a big,

  648. big picture

  649. of what it is

  650. to trust Jesus.

  651. So when Alex

  652. gets baptised here,

  653. he's going to go down

  654. into the water.

  655. He's going to go

  656. backwards down

  657. into the water.

  658. Which is a picture

  659. of Jesus dying.

  660. So when Alex

  661. gets baptised

  662. and he goes down

  663. under the water,

  664. Alex is in effect

  665. as saying,

  666. you know what?

  667. Jesus died for me.

  668. And when Jesus died,

  669. he was dying

  670. in my place,

  671. for me.

  672. And I am accepting

  673. Jesus' death

  674. on my behalf.

  675. And then,

  676. of course,

  677. we will bring him up again.

  678. He doesn't have to hold

  679. his breath for too long.

  680. But he's going to come up

  681. out of the water,

  682. which is a picture

  683. of resurrection.

  684. Jesus was raised

  685. for me.

  686. And Alex is saying

  687. at that moment,

  688. when I come out

  689. of the water,

  690. I'm saying that

  691. Jesus defeated death

  692. for me in my place.

  693. I can never do it,

  694. but I am trusting

  695. Jesus with my life

  696. so that when I die,

  697. I will just rise

  698. and live with him

  699. for all eternity.

  700. So the act of baptism

  701. is this wonderful picture

  702. of believing in Jesus.

  703. And then second,

  704. and this is going

  705. to be quick,

  706. baptism is a picture

  707. not just of believing

  708. in Jesus,

  709. but belonging to Jesus.

  710. Because we all want

  711. to belong,

  712. don't we?

  713. Nobody wants to be

  714. left out and to be

  715. Norman no-mates.

  716. Most of us long

  717. for a real community.

  718. I hope there's no

  719. Normans here,

  720. by the way,

  721. and that you have

  722. got friends.

  723. But we all want

  724. relationships,

  725. don't we?

  726. We want that support

  727. and encouragement,

  728. a place where we're safe

  729. and have that sense

  730. of belonging.

  731. And we don't want

  732. to be left out.

  733. So when we believe

  734. in Jesus,

  735. we also belong

  736. to Jesus.

  737. We become part

  738. of his family,

  739. where we're welcomed

  740. into the family

  741. of Jesus.

  742. We can call Jesus

  743. our brother

  744. and God our Father.

  745. We won't ever

  746. be left out.

  747. Look at verse 40.

  748. With many other words,

  749. he warned them

  750. and he pleaded with them,

  751. save yourselves

  752. from this corrupt

  753. generation.

  754. Now, they're very

  755. strong words

  756. to be saying

  757. save yourself

  758. from this corrupt

  759. generation.

  760. Well, basically

  761. what he's saying

  762. is this.

  763. He's saying

  764. leave your old

  765. way of life,

  766. a life without

  767. Jesus,

  768. and now devote

  769. yourself to your

  770. new way of life,

  771. a life in the

  772. family of Jesus.

  773. So you're leaving

  774. your old life

  775. and you're now

  776. joining the family

  777. of Jesus.

  778. Now, when we join

  779. the family of Jesus,

  780. we're joining those

  781. who also believe

  782. in Jesus,

  783. which is what we

  784. call church.

  785. Joining the family

  786. of Jesus is becoming

  787. part of the family

  788. of Jesus,

  789. people who trust

  790. him.

  791. So look at verse

  792. 44.

  793. We didn't read this,

  794. but I think it's

  795. helpful just to read it.

  796. In verse 44,

  797. this is what it

  798. says here.

  799. All the believers,

  800. so all those who

  801. have entrusted

  802. their life to Jesus,

  803. all of them

  804. were together

  805. and they had

  806. everything in common.

  807. They shared

  808. their life together.

  809. Selling their

  810. possessions and

  811. goods,

  812. they gave to

  813. anyone as he

  814. had need.

  815. So those who

  816. had extra

  817. were able to

  818. give to those

  819. who didn't have.

  820. And they made

  821. sure that nobody

  822. was left

  823. on their own.

  824. Verse 46,

  825. every day they

  826. continued to meet

  827. together in the

  828. temple courts.

  829. They would eat

  830. bread,

  831. they would just

  832. simply have meals

  833. together in their

  834. homes,

  835. eating together

  836. with glad and

  837. sincere hearts.

  838. You see,

  839. they would,

  840. just like we're

  841. doing now,

  842. they would meet

  843. together to read

  844. the Bible and pray

  845. and talk about

  846. Jesus.

  847. They would look

  848. after each other's

  849. needs in a

  850. practical way.

  851. They would care

  852. for one another.

  853. And for many

  854. people,

  855. church is just

  856. boring.

  857. It's that kind

  858. of little slot

  859. on a Sunday

  860. morning when I

  861. want to be in

  862. bed and do my

  863. own thing and

  864. get up at kind

  865. of two o'clock

  866. and play games

  867. or whatever we

  868. do.

  869. But church isn't

  870. just about a

  871. meeting on a

  872. Sunday morning,

  873. it's 24-7.

  874. It's all about

  875. people who believe

  876. in Jesus and

  877. belong to Jesus.

  878. It's about a

  879. family that cares

  880. and supports.

  881. And so Alex

  882. is saying,

  883. I belong to

  884. the family of

  885. Jesus.

  886. In fact,

  887. listen to what

  888. he says in

  889. his story.

  890. He says,

  891. the good thing

  892. about being a

  893. Christian is that

  894. you know you're

  895. going to heaven.

  896. I wonder if you

  897. could say that,

  898. that you know

  899. you're going to

  900. heaven.

  901. Where there's

  902. eternal life with

  903. all the other

  904. believers.

  905. So that's

  906. something to

  907. look forward to.

  908. But what about

  909. now?

  910. He says this,

  911. another good thing

  912. about being a

  913. Christian is that

  914. you get to meet,

  915. to be with

  916. the other

  917. believers.

  918. You see,

  919. church is all

  920. about people who

  921. believe in Jesus

  922. and belong to

  923. Jesus and who

  924. share this life

  925. of Jesus

  926. together.

  927. Now the question

  928. is, how do

  929. people know

  930. that you belong

  931. to Jesus?

  932. Well, they were

  933. baptised.

  934. That's how people

  935. knew.

  936. So in verse

  937. 41, this is

  938. where we started.

  939. Those who

  940. accepted his

  941. message were

  942. baptised.

  943. And about

  944. 3,000, only

  945. one is getting

  946. baptised today,

  947. but there were

  948. 3,000 on that

  949. day.

  950. 3,000 and

  951. they were added.

  952. They joined.

  953. They became

  954. part of the

  955. family of

  956. Jesus.

  957. So when Alex

  958. is getting

  959. baptised, he's

  960. not just saying

  961. I believe in

  962. Jesus and

  963. this is some

  964. kind of little

  965. private thing

  966. that I'm doing

  967. all on my

  968. own.

  969. He's saying,

  970. no, this is

  971. something public.

  972. I'm joining.

  973. The family

  974. of Jesus.

  975. So,

  976. where does

  977. that leave

  978. us all?

  979. Well, Alex

  980. has found

  981. out who

  982. Jesus is.

  983. He believes

  984. in Jesus.

  985. He knows

  986. he belongs

  987. to Jesus.

  988. And he's

  989. going to get

  990. baptised.

  991. But what

  992. about you

  993. and me?

  994. Is this just

  995. for Alex?

  996. Or is this

  997. for you and

  998. me as well?

  999. Well, look

  1000. at verse 39.

  1001. The promise,

  1002. he says,

  1003. this promise

  1004. of forgiveness,

  1005. the promise

  1006. of the Holy

  1007. Spirit,

  1008. is for you

  1009. and for all

  1010. your children

  1011. and for all

  1012. who are far

  1013. off, for all

  1014. whom the Lord

  1015. our God

  1016. will call.

  1017. You see,

  1018. this isn't

  1019. just about

  1020. Alex.

  1021. This is

  1022. something for

  1023. everybody,

  1024. for you

  1025. and for

  1026. me.

  1027. And it

  1028. requires all

  1029. of us to

  1030. respond.

  1031. So I want

  1032. to leave us

  1033. with this

  1034. question.

  1035. What is

  1036. your response?

  1037. We know

  1038. what Alex's

  1039. response is,

  1040. but what's

  1041. your response

  1042. to this good

  1043. news about

  1044. Jesus?

  1045. Will you

  1046. believe in

  1047. your own

  1048. ability to

  1049. deal with

  1050. your own

  1051. sin and

  1052. death?

  1053. Will you

  1054. present your

  1055. record to

  1056. Jesus and

  1057. go,

  1058. right,

  1059. I've done

  1060. a good way

  1061. of excusing

  1062. everything so

  1063. far in my

  1064. life.

  1065. I think I'll

  1066. kind of

  1067. excuse most

  1068. things with

  1069. God.

  1070. Will you

  1071. trust him

  1072. with just

  1073. your life,

  1074. your record?

  1075. Or will you

  1076. present the

  1077. record of

  1078. Jesus as

  1079. being perfect

  1080. for you?

  1081. Will you

  1082. entrust

  1083. yourself to

  1084. Jesus who

  1085. deals with

  1086. death?

  1087. Have you

  1088. found a

  1089. cure for

  1090. death?

  1091. The only

  1092. cure for

  1093. death is

  1094. Jesus who

  1095. rose again

  1096. from the

  1097. grave.

  1098. Do you

  1099. believe?

  1100. And do

  1101. you belong

  1102. to the

  1103. family of

  1104. Jesus?

  1105. We must

  1106. answer that

  1107. question,

  1108. each one

  1109. of us.

  1110. Alex has

  1111. responded with

  1112. a big yes

  1113. to all of

  1114. those.

  1115. I hope

  1116. you do

  1117. too.

  1118. Let's

  1119. pray.

  1120. Father, we

  1121. thank you

  1122. for the

  1123. good news

  1124. of Jesus.

  1125. Thank you

  1126. that he

  1127. died.

  1128. Thank you

  1129. that he

  1130. rose again

  1131. from the

  1132. grave.

  1133. We thank

  1134. you for

  1135. Alex's

  1136. clear and

  1137. sure

  1138. testimony

  1139. of his

  1140. believing in

  1141. Jesus,

  1142. entrusting

  1143. his whole

  1144. life to

  1145. him,

  1146. and his

  1147. trusting in

  1148. the resurrection

  1149. of Jesus

  1150. that he

  1151. will live

  1152. with him

  1153. forever.

  1154. Please help

  1155. us to

  1156. understand what

  1157. we have

  1158. heard,

  1159. and please

  1160. help us if

  1161. we are not

  1162. yet believing

  1163. in him,

  1164. to believe in

  1165. him,

  1166. and if we

  1167. are,

  1168. that we would

  1169. go on trusting

  1170. in him all

  1171. our lives.

  1172. Amen.

  1173. Before we

  1174. do baptise

  1175. Alex,

  1176. we're going

  1177. to sing

  1178. one last

  1179. song.

  1180. When I

  1181. was lost,

  1182. you came

  1183. and rescued

  1184. me.

  1185. Reach

  1186. down.

  1187. This is

  1188. Jesus who

  1189. came down

  1190. to reach

  1191. down to

  1192. us so

  1193. that we

  1194. could belong

  1195. to him.

  1196. Look at

  1197. those words

  1198. there.

  1199. You know

  1200. all the

  1201. things I've

  1202. ever done,

  1203. but Jesus'

  1204. blood,

  1205. that's a

  1206. reference to

  1207. his death,

  1208. has cancelled

  1209. everyone if

  1210. we believe

  1211. in him.

  1212. Let's

  1213. stand

  1214. together.

  1215. As we

  1216. sing this

  1217. song.

  1218. song.

  1219. When I

  1220. was lost,

  1221. you came

  1222. and rescued

  1223. me.

  1224. Reached

  1225. down into

  1226. the pit

  1227. and lifted

  1228. me.

  1229. Oh,

  1230. Lord,

  1231. such love,

  1232. I was as

  1233. far from

  1234. you as

  1235. I could

  1236. be.

  1237. You know

  1238. all the

  1239. things I've

  1240. ever done,

  1241. Jesus' blood

  1242. has cancelled

  1243. everyone.

  1244. Oh,

  1245. Lord,

  1246. such grace

  1247. to qualify

  1248. me as

  1249. your own.

  1250. There is a

  1251. new song

  1252. in my mouth,

  1253. there is a

  1254. deep cry

  1255. in my heart,

  1256. a hymn of

  1257. praise.

  1258. to almighty

  1259. God,

  1260. hallelujah.

  1261. And now

  1262. I stand

  1263. firm

  1264. on this

  1265. rock,

  1266. my life

  1267. is hidden

  1268. now,

  1269. with Christ

  1270. in God,

  1271. the old

  1272. has gone,

  1273. and the new

  1274. has come,

  1275. hallelujah.

  1276. Your love

  1277. has lifted me.

  1278. me.

  1279. Now I

  1280. come into

  1281. your family,

  1282. for the

  1283. Son of God

  1284. has died

  1285. for me.

  1286. Oh,

  1287. Lord,

  1288. such peace

  1289. I am as

  1290. loved by

  1291. you as

  1292. I could

  1293. be.

  1294. In the

  1295. full assurance

  1296. of your

  1297. love,

  1298. now with

  1299. every

  1300. confidence

  1301. we come.

  1302. Oh,

  1303. Lord,

  1304. such joy

  1305. to know

  1306. that you

  1307. delight

  1308. in me.

  1309. There is a

  1310. new

  1311. song

  1312. in my

  1313. mouth,

  1314. there is a

  1315. deep

  1316. cry,

  1317. in my

  1318. heart,

  1319. a hymn

  1320. of praise

  1321. to

  1322. almighty

  1323. God,

  1324. hallelujah.

  1325. And now

  1326. I stand

  1327. firm

  1328. on this

  1329. rock,

  1330. my life

  1331. is hidden

  1332. now,

  1333. with Christ

  1334. in God,

  1335. the old

  1336. has gone,

  1337. and the new

  1338. has come,

  1339. hallelujah.

  1340. Your love

  1341. has lifted me.

  1342. Many

  1343. are the

  1344. wonders

  1345. you have

  1346. done,

  1347. many

  1348. other

  1349. things

  1350. that you

  1351. have

  1352. planned,

  1353. beautiful

  1354. the grace

  1355. that you

  1356. give to

  1357. us,

  1358. all that

  1359. we don't

  1360. deserve,

  1361. all that

  1362. we cannot

  1363. earn,

  1364. but it's a

  1365. gift of

  1366. love,

  1367. your love

  1368. has lifted

  1369. me.

  1370. love,

  1371. love,

  1372. love,

  1373. love,

  1374. love,

  1375. love,

  1376. love,

  1377. love,

  1378. love,

  1379. love,

  1380. love,

  1381. there is a

  1382. new

  1383. song in

  1384. my mouth,

  1385. there is a

  1386. deep

  1387. cry in

  1388. my heart,

  1389. a hymn

  1390. of praise

  1391. to almighty

  1392. God,

  1393. hallelujah.

  1394. And now

  1395. I stand

  1396. firm

  1397. on this

  1398. rock,

  1399. my life

  1400. is hidden

  1401. now,

  1402. with Christ

  1403. in God

  1404. the old

  1405. has gone,

  1406. and the new

  1407. has come,

  1408. hallelujah,

  1409. your love

  1410. has lifted

  1411. me.

  1412. please do

  1413. take your

  1414. seats,

  1415. I'm going

  1416. to ask

  1417. Alex to

  1418. come up,

  1419. and Rob,

  1420. Rob,

  1421. Rob isn't

  1422. getting

  1423. baptized,

  1424. he's just

  1425. the unpaid

  1426. dunker.

  1427. Is it

  1428. cold?

  1429. Yes,

  1430. we want

  1431. it to be

  1432. memorable.

  1433. We're going

  1434. to come in

  1435. and join

  1436. you in

  1437. just a

  1438. minute,

  1439. Alex,

  1440. but just

  1441. to let

  1442. people know,

  1443. well,

  1444. if you can't

  1445. see and you

  1446. want to see,

  1447. you can stand

  1448. up at the

  1449. back or

  1450. gather around,

  1451. that's fine.

  1452. this water

  1453. is just

  1454. ordinary

  1455. water,

  1456. a little

  1457. bit of

  1458. hoss,

  1459. just a

  1460. teeny

  1461. weeny

  1462. bit.

  1463. It's not

  1464. going to

  1465. change

  1466. Alex's

  1467. life,

  1468. the water

  1469. itself,

  1470. I'm not

  1471. going to

  1472. pray over

  1473. it,

  1474. it's not

  1475. magical

  1476. in any

  1477. shape or

  1478. form,

  1479. it is

  1480. simply

  1481. a symbol,

  1482. a picture

  1483. of Alex's

  1484. belief,

  1485. and his

  1486. entrusting

  1487. himself to

  1488. Jesus,

  1489. this death,

  1490. this

  1491. resurrection,

  1492. and he

  1493. has come

  1494. to see that

  1495. Jesus is

  1496. the most

  1497. important

  1498. person in

  1499. his life.

  1500. So,

  1501. Alex,

  1502. I'm just

  1503. going to

  1504. ask you

  1505. two questions

  1506. and then

  1507. we're going

  1508. to jump

  1509. in there

  1510. and baptise

  1511. you.

  1512. So,

  1513. here we

  1514. go.

  1515. Do you

  1516. believe

  1517. that Jesus

  1518. died for

  1519. you and

  1520. rose again

  1521. from the

  1522. grave for

  1523. you so

  1524. that you

  1525. might belong

  1526. to Jesus

  1527. now and

  1528. for all

  1529. eternity?

  1530. Yes,

  1531. I do.

  1532. And do

  1533. you promise

  1534. with the

  1535. help of

  1536. the Holy

  1537. Spirit to

  1538. serve

  1539. God

  1540. in the

  1541. family of

  1542. Jesus,

  1543. that is

  1544. the

  1545. church,

  1546. and in

  1547. the

  1548. world,

  1549. now and

  1550. for so

  1551. long as

  1552. you live.

  1553. Yes.

  1554. Okay.

1555. Alex, on your confession that you trust the Lord Jesus Christ

1556. with all of your life, we now baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and

1557. of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

1558. Well, we're going to continue the celebration and have tea and coffee and there'll be some

1559. food served from the hatch. Before we do, we're going to pray. And so let me just pray

1560. for us all right now. Let's pray together.

1561. Father God, we thank you so much for today. We thank you so much for the story of Alex,

1562. for his life. We thank you so much for his family. Thank you for his testimony that he

1563. follows you and loves you. We pray that you will strengthen him all of his days as he

1564. seeks to walk with you and to live for you. Thank you for the food and the drink that

1565. we're going to enjoy together. We thank you for your many gifts. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  1566. Amen.

  1567. Amen.

  1568. Amen.

  1569. Thank you.

  1570. Thank you.

  1571. Thank you.

  1572. Thank you.

  1573. Thank you.
