  1. 190, 1,190, 2 Thessalonians chapter 3, and we're going to read the whole chapter.

    2 Thessalonians 3 chapter mention

  2. 2 Thessalonians 3, starting at verse 1, on page 1190.

  3. So, let's hear God's word to us.

  4. Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly

  5. and be honoured, just as it was with you.

  6. And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith.

  7. But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.

  8. We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command.

  9. May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance.

  10. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every brother or sister who is idle

  11. and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.

  12. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example.

  13. We were not idle when we were idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it.

  14. On the contrary, we worked night and day, labouring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you.

  15. We did this not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow.

  16. For when we were with you, we gave you this rule, if a man will not work, he shall not eat.

  17. We hear that some among you are idle.

  18. They are not busy.

  19. They are busy bodies.

  20. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat.

  21. And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is right.

  22. If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of them.

  23. Do not associate with them.

  24. In order that they may feel ashamed.

  25. Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as a brother or sister.

  26. Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way.

  27. The Lord be with all of you.

  28. I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand,

  29. which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters.

  30. This is how I write.

  31. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

  32. Tom.

  33. Good morning.

  34. It's great to be here in Caragline with you all.

  35. So, just before we start, I'm very conscious that this is God's word.

  36. It's what he says.

  37. And we need his help to understand this.

  38. Who are we just to look at it flippantly and think we can understand all that it says.

  39. So we're going to pray and ask for his help in understanding what it says today.

  40. Father, we thank you for giving us your word, the Bible, that you have shown us who you are through the words of these pages.

  41. And ultimately through your son Jesus.

  42. And now as we look at this very specific passage, written in a very specific point in time,

  43. help us to understand it.

  44. Lord, I need your help as I explain it.

  45. I pray that we would understand what it means and how that applies to us today.

  46. Amen.

  47. It has to be done.

  48. It pays the bills.

  49. I love what I do.

  50. I wish I had a better job.

  51. I'm always so bored.

  52. What's our attitude towards work?

  53. Is it something that we despise having to do?

  54. Are we obsessed with it?

  55. Are we earnestly trying to find it?

  56. Are we physically not able for it?

  57. Have we finished with work?

  58. Are we retired?

  59. Should we even bother working?

  60. Well, Paul has a lot to say about work in this passage.

  61. And we'll be looking how he finishes off the letter to the Thessalonians.

  62. We looked back in July at the first chapter.

  63. And now we're going to look how he finishes this letter.

  64. But as we think about work today, please don't just think employment.

  65. As Google put it nicely, work is an activity involving mental or physical efforts done in order to achieve a result.

  66. Not necessarily you need to be paid for it.

  67. It's not employment.

  68. We're thinking about work in general.

  69. So we need to remember who he's writing to.

  70. So Paul's writing a letter.

  71. It's not just a book that he wrote.

  72. He's actually writing to a group of people, a church like this, in a place called Thessalonica.

  73. So these people have been facing a lot of trouble, as you might remember, both externally and internally.

  74. But at the very start of the letter, he reminds them that they are being kept in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  75. Paul is writing to encourage them and instruct them as God's people.

  76. So they face fierce persecution from outside themselves, as we heard in chapter 1.

  77. And they face conflict and trouble from within, as there were some who had very bad attitudes towards work and working.

  78. So a quick overview.

  79. Paul in chapter 1 speaks of God's justice and Christ's revelation.

  80. In chapter 2, we see him reassure the church about what must happen before Jesus comes back.

  81. We see a man called the man of lawlessness.

  82. And he encourages the church to stand firm.

  83. And now in chapter 3, Paul gets practical and provides very helpful teaching for the church.

  84. And it's not just for Thessalonica, not for just that place in the ancient world.

  85. But with God's help, we can understand what it means for us in Cargilline, in County Cork, in Ireland today.

  86. Okay, so the first thing that Paul talks about, we're stuck, is one, prayer for work.

  87. So in the first five verses, we see the first thing in this last chapter is Paul's request for them to pray.

  88. But to pray for what?

  89. Prayer that God would work through Paul and his team of workers.

  90. And there are three main things that he mentions in these first few verses.

  91. So in verse 1, what does it say?

  92. As for other matters, brothers and sisters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honoured, just as it was with you.

  93. So Paul's main concern is that the message of the Lord, that is the gospel, would spread and be honoured.

  94. So the image that Paul uses here is literally that the message of the Lord would run.

  95. It's an image that the hearers at the time would be very familiar with.

  96. And it's one he used in a similar letter to the Corinthian church, which when he was talking about an athlete.

  97. But not just that this message would spread and would go far, but that it would be honoured.

  98. Not just in how the people explained it, but that it would be believed and accepted.

  99. Paul is wanting people to hear and believe the message of the Lord.

  100. But what is the message?

  101. It's the message that God has provided a way to be forgiven for rebellion against God.

  102. If you know the story of the Bible, it starts back at the beginning of time, and mankind rebelled against God.

  103. And ever since, man has been living, men and women, humankind, has been living in a way that goes against the way that God wants us to live.

  104. And that causes separation.

  105. But this message is that there's a way to be forgiven for this rebellion.

  106. And to be in the presence of God forever.

  107. And because we don't live in this way that he wants us to live, we're separated.

  108. And without his help, we'd be destined for much worse.

  109. So with him, we can be forgiven.

  110. Without him, look at chapter 1, verses 8 and 9.

  111. We're going to do some flicking.

  112. We're all used to flicking a lot.

  113. Flicking around the TV, flicking through magazines, flicking around the internet.

  114. So it's no exception, we'll flick a lot today as well.

  115. Verses 8 and 9 in chapter 1.

  116. Listen to this.

  117. He will punish those who do not know God,

  118. and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

  119. They will be punished with everlasting destruction,

  120. and shut out from the presence of the Lord,

  121. and from the glory of his might.

  122. That's a serious, serious message.

  123. But the message of the Lord,

  124. is that the Lord Jesus Christ died on a cross,

  125. taking the punishment for sin, for this rebellion that we deserve,

  126. which is separation from God.

  127. And we know that the good news,

  128. Jesus was raised to life in victory over sin and death,

  129. and simply through faith in him,

  130. that he did that to save me,

  131. we can be forgiven,

  132. and enjoy being in the presence of God for all eternity.

  133. Think about that, that our lives now,

  134. have consequences.

  135. What we see isn't all that there is to life.

  136. What we do with life now,

  137. has consequences in the life to come.

  138. And what does come next?

  139. Eternity.

  140. And the Bible tells us,

  141. this isn't just a spiritual experience.

  142. If we're people who believe in Jesus,

  143. we're not just going to go and live in the clouds,

  144. we're not just going to be ethereal beings,

  145. with no form or matter,

  146. we're going to be very tactile,

  147. earthy people,

  148. living in a new world,

  149. this earth remade,

  150. and perfect.

  151. And that's wonderful,

  152. that we can live there forever.

  153. So we will either be with the Lord,

  154. or we'll be separated.

  155. And it's only through Jesus,

  156. that we can be with him forever.

  157. So Paul, he asks for prayer,

  158. for the spread of this wonderful message.

  159. Prayer for this work.

  160. That's the first thing.

  161. And then verse 2,

  162. prayer for deliverance,

  163. from wicked and evil people.

  164. For not everyone has faith.

  165. So he's asking for prayer,

  166. for the Lord to work in delivering Paul and his team,

  167. because he's working with a group of people,

  168. from those opposed to God and his message.

  169. And he uses the same word here that Jesus uses,

  170. when he says in the Lord's Prayer,

  171. deliver us from evil.

  172. So if Paul firstly is asking,

  173. that the Lord would work in spreading the gospel,

  174. this message,

  175. here he's asking for prayer,

  176. that the Lord would help those,

  177. who are doing the spreading.

  178. So Paul is dependent,

  179. and his team,

  180. on God's help,

  181. in opening doors,

  182. providing opportunities,

  183. bringing people to them,

  184. even though they were being persecuted by people,

  185. opposed to God and his message.

  186. Flick back to Acts.

  187. So this is a letter to the Thessalonians.

  188. Acts is like a history book,

  189. which gives us a story,

  190. and explains what happened in different places.

  191. So in chapter 17,

  192. it talks about Thessalonica.

  193. And we're just going to read from verse 5 to 9.

  194. So Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17:5–9

  195. verse 5 to 9.

  196. So Paul visited this city.

  197. He preached this message of the Lord,

  198. the gospel.

  199. Some people accepted it and believed.

  200. But verse 5.

  201. But other Jews were jealous.

  202. So they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace,

  203. formed a mob,

  204. and started a riot in the city.

  205. They rushed to Jason's house in search of Paul and Silas,

  206. in order to bring them out to the crowd.

  207. But when they did not find them,

  208. they dragged Jason and some other believers

  209. before the city officials,

  210. shouting,

  211. These men, who have caused trouble all over the world,

  212. have now come here,

  213. and Jason has welcomed them into his house.

  214. They are all defying Caesar's decrees,

  215. saying that there is another king,

  216. one called Jesus.

  217. When they heard this,

  218. the crowd and the city officials were thrown into turmoil.

  219. Then they made Jason and the others postpone and let them go.

  220. So there was this fierce persecution,

  221. and Paul is praying for work,

  222. that God would work in helping those spreading the gospel.

  223. So it's worth mentioning here at this point,

  224. about who these gospel spreaders are,

  225. or who they should be.

  226. Is there an elite, super spiritual team of gospel spreaders in this church,

  227. who we need to pray for?

  228. Or in any church?

  229. No, not at all.

  230. We're going to look at Paul's instructions for work in the verses that follow,

  231. but this work of spreading the gospel,

  232. of telling other people about Jesus,

  233. is not just for a few,

  234. it's for everyone.

  235. I'm paraphrasing our principal in our college in Dublin,

  236. in IBI,

  237. but he has suggested

  238. that the Great Commission,

  239. the last words of Jesus to his disciples,

  240. may have been better named

  241. the Everyday Commission,

  242. for everyday Christians.

  243. It's for everybody.

  244. Jesus' command to go and make disciples of all nations,

  245. is for all of us.

  246. Whether we're people who work in Christian jobs,

  247. secular jobs,

  248. whether we're job seekers,

  249. stay-at-home parents,

  250. volunteers,

  251. students going back to school,

  252. college,

  253. if we're retired,

  254. whatever we're working at,

  255. it's our responsibility

  256. to be gospel spreaders.

  257. And we need the Lord's help with this.

  258. We need to be praying for each other

  259. and encouraging each other to this end.

  260. So, just before Paul goes on to encourage the believers,

  261. or sorry, to pray for the believers,

  262. he takes a moment to encourage them

  263. in verses 3 and 4.

  264. What does he say?

  265. But the Lord is faithful,

  266. and he will strengthen you

  267. and protect you from the evil one.

  268. We have confidence in the Lord

  269. that you are doing

  270. and will continue to do the things we command.

  271. So, verse 4 then goes on to show

  272. how Paul has confidence

  273. in those he's writing to,

  274. that they are

  275. and will continue to do

  276. what Paul and his team commanded.

  277. He's encouraging these believers.

  278. And then the final prayer for work

  279. is that the Lord would direct the believers' hearts.

  280. Look at verse 5.

  281. May the Lord direct your hearts

  282. into God's love

  283. and Christ's perseverance.

  284. So, God's love

  285. and Christ's perseverance.

  286. We now, today,

  287. just as they did then,

  288. need the Lord to be directing our hearts

  289. to his love

  290. and looking to our Saviour Jesus

  291. for our example of perseverance.

  292. Our personal relationship with the Lord

  293. is of utmost importance

  294. when serving him

  295. and doing his work

  296. and spreading his gospel.

  297. We need to be people

  298. who always rely on God's love

  299. and care in all we do,

  300. big or small,

  301. and we need to be looking to Jesus

  302. and following him

  303. in all our actions and thoughts.

  304. Our personal relationship

  305. with the Lord Jesus

  306. is the foundation

  307. for everything else we do.

  308. Without that,

  309. we're lost.

  310. As some of you might know,

  311. I work for Amazon

  312. and they have an amazing policy

  313. for some of their workers

  314. in the United States.

  315. They have massive warehouses.

  316. I don't know if you've seen

  317. some of the newspaper articles.

  318. They have massive warehouses.

  319. You click on Amazon

  320. and say,

  321. I want to buy this book.

  322. It goes to a system

  323. and this big warehouse

  324. finds it,

  325. puts it in a box

  326. and sends it to you.

  327. And there are naturally

  328. people in this warehouse

  329. who need to work

  330. and fulfill the orders.

  331. And Amazon has this amazing policy

  332. that they say,

  333. if you want to leave Amazon,

  334. we'll give you $5,000

  335. and you can be on your way.

  336. Thank you very much.

  337. You can get up and leave

  338. and you can have $5,000

  339. find a new job.

  340. So Amazon is trying

  341. to create this culture

  342. of keeping people

  343. who love working for Amazon.

  344. They're not going to take

  345. the $5,000

  346. if they want to keep

  347. their jobs with them.

  348. And it's the same

  349. with the Lord.

  350. If we're going to be workers

  351. for him,

  352. we need to love Jesus.

  353. If we're to be effective,

  354. we need to be people

  355. who love the Lord

  356. and as a result,

  357. we will love working for him.

  358. We need to first and foremost

  359. love the Lord

  360. with all our heart,

  361. soul, strength and mind

  362. and then loving others

  363. and serving them

  364. will follow.

  365. So we need to be looking

  366. to God's love

  367. and Christ's perseverance,

  368. his example

  369. as we go about our lives.

  370. So that's one,

  371. prayer for work.

  372. The second thing,

  373. instructions for work.

  374. We move on to some

  375. very practical

  376. down-to-earth instructions

  377. that Paul is giving

  378. to the Thessalonian church.

  379. But first,

  380. why on earth

  381. would they listen to Paul?

  382. What authority

  383. does he have?

  384. Who's this Paul anyway?

  385. Why does he write

  386. so many letters?

  387. So listen to the start

  388. of verse 6.

  389. I'm sorry,

  390. back in chapter 1.

  391. So in verse 2,

  392. in chapter 1,

  393. grace and peace to you

  394. from God the Father

  395. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  396. He's writing

  397. on behalf of someone.

  398. Look at verse 6,

  399. back in chapter 3.

  400. In the name

  401. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  402. we command you.

  403. Paul was an apostle

  404. of Jesus Christ.

  405. That is,

  406. one who was sent

  407. by Jesus

  408. and God the Father

  409. with unique authority

  410. and power.

  411. Now,

  412. we don't have people

  413. like this today.

  414. I can't write you all

  415. a letter

  416. and say,

  417. from God the Father

  418. and the Lord Jesus Christ

  419. with such power

  420. and authority

  421. that Paul did.

  422. but we have

  423. Paul's words.

  424. We have the same

  425. words he wrote

  426. and he tells us

  427. where this authority

  428. comes from.

  429. It's not his own.

  430. It's from Jesus.

  431. The Lord Jesus Christ.

  432. So before we look

  433. at these practical

  434. instructions,

  435. we need to understand

  436. the context

  437. and we need to understand

  438. what Paul and his team

  439. had previously commanded.

  440. So in case anyone

  441. in the church

  442. had forgotten

  443. and very helpfully

  444. for us,

  445. Paul reminds us

  446. of the teaching

  447. that he gave.

  448. Look in verse 10.

  449. Skip on a little bit.

  450. Chapter 3, verse 10.

  451. For even when we were

  452. with you,

  453. we gave you this rule.

  454. The one who is

  455. unwilling to work

  456. shall not eat.

  457. The one who is

  458. unwilling to work

  459. shall not eat.

  460. Seems a bit drastic, Paul.

  461. Unwilling workers

  462. don't get to eat.

  463. Well, this is very similar

  464. to some of the sayings

  465. in Proverbs.

  466. So we're going to do

  467. some more flicking.

  468. Turn in your Bibles

  469. back to Proverbs.

  470. So we're halfway through

  471. your book,

  472. Proverbs.

  473. It's after Psalms.

  474. And the first one

  475. we're going to

  476. is Proverbs chapter 10.

    Proverbs 10 chapter mention

  477. They're all very short.

  478. Now Proverbs is amazing

  479. because there are

  480. these nuggets of wisdom.

  481. Now, it's worth mentioning

  482. they're not promises.

  483. They're principles.

  484. Okay?

  485. So I think that's worth

  486. remembering.

  487. Look at Proverbs chapter 10,

    Proverbs 10:4

  488. verse 4.

  489. Lazy hands

  490. make for poverty,

  491. but diligent hands

  492. bring wealth.

  493. Move forward to chapter 12,

  494. verse 11.

  495. Those who work their land

  496. will have abundant food,

  497. but those who chase fantasies

  498. have no sense.

  499. And the last one,

  500. chapter 14,

  501. verse 23.

  502. All hard work

  503. brings a profit,

  504. but mere talk

  505. leads only

  506. to poverty.

  507. So in a similar way,

  508. Paul had given them

  509. this instruction

  510. that those who are

  511. unwilling to work

  512. shall not eat.

  513. these Proverbs

  514. would have been known

  515. by God's people

  516. at the time.

  517. And I think

  518. what Paul is saying here,

  519. these people

  520. didn't have

  521. social welfare.

  522. They didn't have

  523. a government

  524. who would give them

  525. benefits

  526. if they didn't

  527. have a job.

  528. So without work,

  529. it was very practical,

  530. they wouldn't eat.

  531. They wouldn't have money,

  532. they couldn't buy food,

  533. they couldn't grow food,

  534. unless someone

  535. shared with them.

  536. So Paul is saying

  537. those who don't work

  538. don't eat,

  539. it's those who are

  540. unwilling to work

  541. who don't eat.

  542. So,

  543. it was a common practice

  544. in the early church

  545. for believers

  546. who were more wealthy

  547. to look after

  548. those in need

  549. and could not make

  550. a living for themselves

  551. a sort of social welfare

  552. within the church.

  553. So it should not

  554. be the case

  555. that those who

  556. were able to work

  557. but not willing

  558. to do so

  559. should benefit

  560. from the hard work

  561. and fruit

  562. of others' labour.

  563. But this is

  564. the exact problem.

  565. There were people

  566. in Thessalonica

  567. who were doing

  568. exactly this.

  569. So Paul's teaching

  570. in this matter

  571. is that God's people

  572. need to be

  573. a working people.

  574. So,

  575. we mentioned

  576. the very beginning

  577. of the story

  578. at the start.

  579. We're going to go

  580. back to Genesis,

  581. right to the very beginning.

  582. Genesis chapter 2.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  583. This is the easiest

  584. book to find.

  585. It's the first one.

  586. Genesis chapter 2.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  587. Okay,

  588. so the story

  589. of this world,

  590. the history

  591. of this world

  592. is that God

  593. created

  594. all things.

  595. And listen

  596. what he did

  597. in the beginning.

  598. It's chapter 2

  599. and verse 8

  600. to 9.

  601. Now the Lord God

  602. had planted

  603. a garden

  604. in the east,

  605. in Eden,

  606. and there

  607. he put the man

  608. he had formed.

  609. The Lord God

  610. made all kinds

  611. of trees

  612. go out of the ground,

  613. trees that were

  614. pleasing to the eye

  615. and good for food.

  616. In the middle

  617. of the garden

  618. were the tree

  619. of life

  620. and the tree

  621. of the knowledge

  622. of good and evil.

  623. And look at verse 15.

  624. The Lord God

  625. took the man

  626. and put him

  627. in the garden

  628. of Eden

  629. to work it

  630. and take care

  631. of it.

  632. So if you know

  633. the story,

  634. this is before

  635. man rebelled.

  636. This is before

  637. sin came into

  638. the world.

  639. So God

  640. created us

  641. to work.

  642. But let's continue.

  643. Chapter 3

  644. in Genesis.

  645. Man rebelled.

  646. Man went against

  647. what God had said.

  648. Look in verse 17.

  649. Look what he says

  650. to Adam.

  651. Chapter 3, 17.

  652. To Adam he said,

  653. Because you listened

  654. to your wife

  655. and ate fruit

  656. from the tree

  657. about which I

  658. commanded you,

  659. you must not

  660. eat from it.

  661. Cursed is the ground

  662. because of you.

  663. Through painful toil

  664. you will eat food

  665. from it

  666. all the days

  667. of your life.

  668. It will produce

  669. thorns and thistles

  670. for you

  671. and you will eat

  672. the plants

  673. of the field.

  674. By the sweat

  675. of your brow

  676. you will eat

  677. your food

  678. until you return

  679. to the ground

  680. since from it

  681. you are taken.

  682. For dust you are

  683. and to dust

  684. you will return.

  685. So God created us

  686. to work

  687. but the result

  688. of sin

  689. is that this work

  690. became difficult

  691. and painful.

  692. The work itself

  693. is good and right

  694. and it's what

  695. we're to do

  696. being workers

  697. but it's because

  698. of sin

  699. that this work

  700. is hard.

  701. So we're not

  702. to be people

  703. who sponge off

  704. others

  705. wasting our time

  706. doing nothing

  707. wasting our lives

  708. on Facebook

  709. Twitter

  710. watching TV

  711. endlessly

  712. playing video games

  713. reading useless

  714. magazines

  715. wasting our time

  716. we're to be people

  717. who are workers

  718. first and foremost

  719. because that's

  720. what we're created

  721. to be.

  722. We're going to be

  723. workers in this

  724. new earth

  725. that God gives us

  726. if we have faith

  727. in him

  728. and that's what

  729. we need to be now.

  730. he's going to

  731. remove the pain

  732. and the hardness

  733. of the work

  734. which I can't

  735. wait for

  736. but we need

  737. to be workers

  738. now

  739. and again

  740. not that we

  741. need to be

  742. employees

  743. but we're

  744. to be workers

  745. if you're a

  746. student

  747. then you need

  748. to be a good

  749. worker in that

  750. if you don't

  751. have a job

  752. maybe you're

  753. looking for one

  754. or you're

  755. retired

  756. or maybe

  757. for some reason

  758. you're on

  759. sick leave

  760. you're unable

  761. to work

  762. what could

  763. you do

  764. there are

  765. many things

  766. that we can

  767. do

  768. in terms of

  769. voluntary work

  770. we can be

  771. involved in

  772. things without

  773. having to

  774. necessarily be

  775. employed

  776. what about

  777. stay at home

  778. parents

  779. it is good

  780. and right

  781. to be working

  782. and it is

  783. hard work

  784. in that role

  785. and I just

  786. want to say

  787. at this point

  788. it's really

  789. important to

  790. remember this

  791. we talked

  792. about having

  793. faith in

  794. Jesus

  795. but we're

  796. not to

  797. work for

  798. the Lord

  799. to earn

  800. or even

  801. maintain

  802. his favour

  803. and salvation

  804. that is

  805. impossible

  806. and can't

  807. be done

  808. our lives

  809. in this world

  810. is not about

  811. how good we

  812. are or how

  813. much we

  814. work

  815. it's about

  816. faith in

  817. Jesus

  818. we work

  819. for the

  820. Lord

  821. as he's

  822. calling us

  823. to live

  824. like this

  825. because

  826. he has

  827. already

  828. shown us

  829. his favour

  830. and given

  831. us his

  832. salvation

  833. we need

  834. to get

  835. the order

  836. right

  837. or we're

  838. going to

  839. have a

  840. very unhappy

  841. life

  842. and a

  843. very

  844. hard

  845. life

  846. ok so

  847. on to

  848. Paul's

  849. instructions

  850. he's

  851. very

  852. practical

  853. the first

  854. instruction

  855. to the

  856. church

  857. from

  858. Paul

  859. is that

  860. they're

  861. to keep

  862. away

  863. from the

  864. idle

  865. believer

  866. Paul

  867. commands

  868. the

  869. believers

  870. in

  871. Thessalonica

  872. to stay

  873. away

  874. from the

  875. believer

  876. who's

  877. idle

  878. and

  879. disruptive

  880. who doesn't

  881. live

  882. according to

  883. the teaching

  884. they received

  885. the teaching

  886. that they need

  887. to be people

  888. who work

  889. he says

  890. in verse

  891. six

  892. so he says

  893. we command

  894. you

  895. brothers and

  896. sisters

  897. to keep

  898. away from

  899. every believer

  900. who is idle

  901. and disruptive

  902. and does

  903. not live

  904. according

  905. to the

  906. teaching

  907. you receive

  908. from us

  909. but what's

  910. this

  911. idleness

  912. about

  913. the word

  914. does not

  915. necessarily

  916. mean

  917. physically

  918. doing

  919. nothing

  920. sitting

  921. down

  922. resting

  923. because that's

  924. a good

  925. thing to

  926. do

  927. it's more

  928. of an

  929. active word

  930. that he's

  931. talking about

  932. the following

  933. word

  934. is helpful

  935. in understanding

  936. the idleness

  937. and that is

  938. disruptive

  939. they were

  940. idle

  941. disruptors

  942. Paul very

  943. helpfully

  944. explains it

  945. in verse

  946. 11

  947. look at

  948. verse 11

  949. we hear

  950. that some

  951. among you

  952. are idle

  953. and disruptive

  954. they're not

  955. busy

  956. they're busy

  957. bodies

  958. they were

  959. being busy

  960. bodies

  961. they were

  962. interfering

  963. with other

  964. people's

  965. business

  966. other people's

  967. work

  968. they were

  969. sponging

  970. off the

  971. generosity

  972. of others

  973. and these

  974. idle

  975. disruptors

  976. were living

  977. in a way

  978. that was

  979. causing

  980. hassle

  981. in the

  982. church

  983. and it

  984. was not

  985. according

  986. to the

  987. way

  988. Paul

  989. had

  990. previously

  991. instructed

  992. them

  993. they were

  994. claiming

  995. to be

  996. in need

  997. so were

  998. benefiting

  999. from this

  1000. social

  1001. welfare

  1002. in the

  1003. church

  1004. but that

  1005. was what

  1006. was available

  1007. for truly

  1008. needy

  1009. people

  1010. do we

  1011. find ourselves

  1012. to be

  1013. idle

  1014. people

  1015. are we

  1016. busy

  1017. bodies

  1018. do we

  1019. skip out

  1020. on work

  1021. or responsibilities

  1022. that we

  1023. have

  1024. employment

  1025. or otherwise

  1026. in the

  1027. home

  1028. with family

  1029. just knowing

  1030. that someone

  1031. else will

  1032. look after

  1033. it

  1034. or if we

  1035. don't do

  1036. it

  1037. someone else

  1038. will finish

  1039. the job

  1040. if we

  1041. do no

  1042. work

  1043. someone else

  1044. will provide

  1045. for me

  1046. are we

  1047. quick to

  1048. interfere

  1049. in other

  1050. people's

  1051. business

  1052. are we

  1053. busy

  1054. bodies

  1055. it's

  1056. tempting

  1057. isn't

  1058. it

  1059. it's

  1060. usually

  1061. the

  1062. easier

  1063. option

  1064. sin

  1065. makes

  1066. work

  1067. hard

  1068. so the

  1069. other

  1070. option

  1071. for now

  1072. seems

  1073. easier

  1074. but that's

  1075. not how

  1076. the Lord

  1077. wants us

  1078. to live

  1079. in Ireland

  1080. I don't

  1081. know about

  1082. some guys

  1083. in the

  1084. UK

  1085. we have

  1086. this

  1087. culture

  1088. of social

  1089. welfare

  1090. we have

  1091. a social

  1092. welfare

  1093. culture

  1094. where people

  1095. say

  1096. I'm not

  1097. going to

  1098. bother

  1099. working

  1100. because the

  1101. government

  1102. is going

  1103. to pay

  1104. my wage

  1105. we have

  1106. this attitude

  1107. that it's

  1108. okay to

  1109. be lazy

  1110. we have

  1111. a calling

  1112. in sick

  1113. culture

  1114. I don't

  1115. feel like

  1116. working

  1117. today

  1118. I work

  1119. for Amazon

  1120. I work

  1121. from home

  1122. and the

  1123. way I

  1124. call in

  1125. sick

  1126. I don't

  1127. go and

  1128. see any

  1129. managers

  1130. all I have

  1131. to do

  1132. is I

  1133. call this

  1134. number

  1135. it's an

  1136. automated

  1137. voice

  1138. and I

  1139. have to

  1140. say my

  1141. name

  1142. and why

  1143. I'm not

  1144. coming into

  1145. work

  1146. say it's

  1147. Tom

  1148. I'm

  1149. sick

  1150. I'll be

  1151. in tomorrow

  1152. that's it

  1153. it's so

  1154. easy

  1155. it's tempting

  1156. isn't it

  1157. you're

  1158. very tired

  1159. but no

  1160. that's not

  1161. what the

  1162. Lord has

  1163. asked us

  1164. to do

  1165. and let's

  1166. look at

  1167. Paul's

  1168. example

  1169. he gives

  1170. us an

  1171. example

  1172. in his

  1173. instructions

  1174. for work

  1175. Paul reminds

  1176. them

  1177. about having

  1178. to follow

  1179. their

  1180. example

  1181. what does

  1182. it say

  1183. verse 7

  1184. the later

  1185. part of

  1186. verse 7

  1187. and 8

  1188. to 9

  1189. we were

  1190. not idle

  1191. when we

  1192. were with

  1193. you

  1194. nor did

  1195. we eat

  1196. anyone's

  1197. food

  1198. without

  1199. paying

  1200. for it

  1201. on the

  1202. contrary

  1203. we worked

  1204. night and

  1205. day

  1206. laboring

  1207. and toiling

  1208. so that we

  1209. would not be a

  1210. burden to

  1211. any of you

  1212. we did this

  1213. not because we do

  1214. not have the right

  1215. to such help

  1216. but in order to

  1217. offer ourselves

  1218. as a model

  1219. or example

  1220. for you to

  1221. imitate

  1222. they set an

  1223. example of

  1224. working hard

  1225. to earn their

  1226. living

1227. so as not to be

  1228. a burden to

  1229. anyone

  1230. they were

  1231. with the

  1232. thessalonians

  1233. with the

  1234. intention of

  1235. spreading this

  1236. gospel

  1237. this message

  1238. which we

  1239. remember is

  1240. all of our

  1241. responsibility

  1242. but yet they

  1243. worked hard

  1244. so as to

  1245. provide for

  1246. themselves

  1247. during this

  1248. time

  1249. they wouldn't

  1250. be a

  1251. burden

  1252. and if you

  1253. remember in

  1254. Acts

  1255. Acts was

  1256. written by a

  1257. guy called

  1258. Luke

  1259. and Luke

  1260. tells us

  1261. that Paul

  1262. was a

  1263. tent maker

  1264. he made

  1265. tents

  1266. and this

  1267. may very

  1268. well have

  1269. been what

  1270. Paul was

  1271. doing with

  1272. the

  1273. thessalonians

  1274. by day

  1275. he made

  1276. tents

  1277. by evening

  1278. and night

  1279. he spread

  1280. this message

  1281. because he

  1282. would be an

  1283. example of a

  1284. hard worker

  1285. and so he

  1286. wouldn't be a

  1287. burden

  1288. in verse 9

  1289. Paul mentions

  1290. here and he

  1291. further elaborates

  1292. to another

  1293. church in

  1294. Corinth

  1295. that the

  1296. apostles actually

  1297. had a right

  1298. to be

  1299. supported

  1300. in verse 9

  1301. we did this

  1302. not because we

  1303. do not have

  1304. the right to

  1305. such help

  1306. but in order

  1307. to offer

  1308. ourselves as

  1309. a model

  1310. for you to

  1311. imitate

  1312. he gives up

  1313. this right

  1314. in earning

  1315. his own

  1316. living

  1317. to be an

  1318. example

  1319. so this is a

  1320. helpful example

  1321. for us

  1322. isn't it

  1323. seeing how

  1324. this work

  1325. of gospel

  1326. spreading

  1327. of spreading

  1328. this message

  1329. can be done

  1330. regardless of

  1331. whether you

  1332. have a secular

  1333. job

  1334. or a job

  1335. specific to

  1336. Christians

  1337. things

  1338. or you

  1339. don't have

  1340. a job

  1341. that you're

  1342. paid for

  1343. in your

  1344. involuntary

  1345. work

  1346. you're at

  1347. home

  1348. you're a

  1349. student

  1350. we don't

  1351. need to be

  1352. a Christian

  1353. worker

  1354. or a

  1355. foreign

  1356. missionary

  1357. to be

  1358. gospel spreaders

  1359. or even

  1360. a youth

  1361. worker

  1362. even Paul

  1363. did it

  1364. he made

  1365. tents

  1366. in fact

  1367. we need

  1368. people who

  1369. are tent

  1370. makers

  1371. people who

  1372. have jobs

  1373. as well

  1374. so they

  1375. can provide

  1376. for their

  1377. family

  1378. and also

  1379. for others

  1380. who are

  1381. in need

  1382. so don't

  1383. think what

  1384. you do

  1385. what you

  1386. work at

  1387. your job

  1388. is not

  1389. doing God's

  1390. work

  1391. it is

  1392. or think

  1393. that I'll

  1394. be doing

  1395. God's

  1396. work as

  1397. soon as

  1398. I work

  1399. for a

  1400. church

  1401. or in

  1402. a mission

  1403. or a

  1404. Christian

  1405. organization

  1406. we are

  1407. doing God's

  1408. work

  1409. because he

  1410. called us

  1411. to be his

  1412. workers in

  1413. the places

  1414. that we

  1415. are

  1416. spreading

  1417. the gospel

  1418. as we

  1419. go

  1420. the everyday

  1421. commission

  1422. for everyday

  1423. Christians

  1424. so and we

  1425. remember what

  1426. we said

  1427. earlier

  1428. we're all

  1429. to be

  1430. gospel

  1431. spreaders

  1432. everywhere

  1433. we work

  1434. regardless

  1435. of whether

  1436. it's a

  1437. job or

  1438. employment

  1439. we're called

  1440. to spread

  1441. the Lord's

  1442. message

  1443. so Paul's

  1444. final instruction

  1445. for work

  1446. in verses

  1447. 11 to 12

  1448. is aimed

  1449. at the

  1450. idlers

  1451. so this

  1452. before it's

  1453. been to the

  1454. church

  1455. now it's

  1456. aimed at

  1457. the idlers

  1458. these loafers

  1459. these busy

  1460. bodies

  1461. in the

  1462. church

  1463. what does

  1464. it say

  1465. we hear

  1466. that some

  1467. among you

  1468. are idle

  1469. and disruptive

  1470. they're not

  1471. busy

  1472. they're busy

  1473. bodies

  1474. such people

  1475. we command

  1476. and urge

  1477. in the

  1478. Lord Jesus

  1479. Christ

  1480. to settle

  1481. down

  1482. and earn

  1483. the food

  1484. they eat

  1485. Paul's

  1486. very clear

  1487. and straight

  1488. to the

  1489. point

  1490. settle

  1491. down

  1492. earn

  1493. the food

  1494. you eat

  1495. or some

  1496. translations

  1497. say earn

  1498. the bread

  1499. you eat

  1500. if you're

  1501. someone who's

  1502. a sponger

  1503. a loafer

  1504. an idle

  1505. disruptor

  1506. a busy

  1507. body

  1508. then you

  1509. need to get

  1510. your act

  1511. together

  1512. because you're

  1513. not living

  1514. in the way

  1515. that you

  1516. were created

  1517. to live

  1518. and if you're

  1519. not someone

  1520. who follows

  1521. Jesus

  1522. this still

  1523. applies

  1524. you were

  1525. created

  1526. to work

  1527. but that

  1528. work isn't

  1529. what will

  1530. save you

  1531. it's only

  1532. through faith

  1533. not to earn

  1534. his favour

  1535. but if you're

  1536. one of God's

  1537. people

  1538. in response

  1539. to what

  1540. he's done

  1541. so Paul

  1542. talks about

  1543. prayer for

  1544. work

  1545. his instructions

  1546. for work

  1547. and thirdly

  1548. this motivation

  1549. for work

  1550. why do all

  1551. of this

  1552. in these last

  1553. few verses

  1554. of the letter

  1555. we can see

  1556. the reasons

  1557. to be

  1558. motivated

  1559. to be

  1560. workers

  1561. firstly

  1562. Paul

  1563. puts in

  1564. an encouragement

  1565. in verse

  1566. 13

  1567. and as for

  1568. you brothers

  1569. and sisters

  1570. never tire

  1571. of doing

  1572. what is

  1573. good

  1574. we need

  1575. to be

  1576. encouraged

  1577. like this

  1578. sometimes

  1579. don't we

  1580. have you

  1581. ever continued

  1582. to do

  1583. what is

  1584. good

  1585. what is

  1586. right

  1587. and it

  1588. becomes

  1589. difficult

  1590. and frustrating

  1591. is there

  1592. someone awkward

  1593. at work

  1594. is there

  1595. a family

  1596. member

  1597. you don't

  1598. get on

  1599. with

  1600. is one

  1601. of your

  1602. kids

  1603. driving you

  1604. mad

  1605. this week

  1606. is there

  1607. someone

  1608. that you

  1609. always tell

  1610. the gospel

  1611. to share

  1612. your faith

  1613. with

  1614. but they

  1615. don't

  1616. care

  1617. but Paul

  1618. encourages

  1619. you

  1620. don't

  1621. tire

  1622. of doing

  1623. what is

  1624. good

  1625. keep

  1626. going

  1627. we need

  1628. to keep

  1629. going

  1630. in it

  1631. and Paul

  1632. elaborates

  1633. slightly

  1634. more

  1635. in another

  1636. letter

  1637. to the

  1638. Galatians

  1639. in chapter

  1640. 6

  1641. quickly

  1642. flick to

  1643. Galatians

  1644. it's a

  1645. couple of

  1646. books back

  1647. chapter 6

  1648. in verse

  1649. 9

  1650. so to

  1651. the

  1652. Thessalonians

  1653. he says

  1654. never

  1655. tire

  1656. of doing

  1657. what is

  1658. good

  1659. to the

  1660. Galatians

  1661. another

  1662. church

  1663. another

  1664. group of

  1665. people

  1666. chapter 6

  1667. verse 9

  1668. he says

  1669. let us

  1670. not become

  1671. weary

  1672. in doing

  1673. good

  1674. for at

  1675. the proper

  1676. time

  1677. we will

  1678. reap a

  1679. harvest

  1680. if we

  1681. do not

  1682. give up

  1683. at the

  1684. right time

  1685. we will

  1686. reap

  1687. a reward

  1688. as we

  1689. continue

  1690. to do

  1691. what is

  1692. good

  1693. the Lord

  1694. is in

  1695. control

  1696. and he

  1697. knows

  1698. that as

  1699. we work

  1700. for him

  1701. he will

  1702. bless

  1703. maybe not

  1704. in the way

  1705. that we

  1706. would think

  1707. or imagine

  1708. but we

  1709. will reap

  1710. a reward

  1711. have you

  1712. ever been

  1713. motivated

  1714. as we

  1715. move on

  1716. to the

  1717. end of

  1718. the chapter

  1719. by something

  1720. because of

  1721. the negative

  1722. consequences

  1723. of not

  1724. doing it

  1725. or paying

  1726. your bills

  1727. you want

  1728. electricity

  1729. in your

  1730. house

  1731. don't you

  1732. so you

  1733. pay your

  1734. bills

  1735. or else

  1736. you live

  1737. in

  1738. darkness

  1739. now we

  1740. know

  1741. that as

  1742. Christians

  1743. we should

  1744. pay our

  1745. bills

  1746. because we

  1747. use what

  1748. we need

  1749. in our

  1750. house

  1751. we don't

  1752. have gas

  1753. we have

  1754. electricity

  1755. but our

  1756. central heating

  1757. is done

  1758. with oil

  1759. we don't

  1760. have oil

  1761. on tap

  1762. and we

  1763. have to

  1764. buy oil

  1765. and put it

  1766. in a big

  1767. tank

  1768. behind our

  1769. house

  1770. and oil

  1771. is really

  1772. expensive

  1773. but if we

  1774. don't buy

  1775. oil

  1776. what happens

  1777. we freeze

  1778. we're coming

  1779. up

  1780. it's the end

  1781. of September

  1782. we're kind

  1783. of pushing

  1784. it now

  1785. we need

  1786. to start

  1787. buying oil

  1788. turn on

  1789. the central

  1790. heating

  1791. or else

  1792. we'll freeze

  1793. so the

  1794. negative

  1795. consequence

  1796. is we'll

  1797. be freezing

  1798. without the

  1799. oil

  1800. and naturally

  1801. part of our

  1802. motivation to

  1803. do something

  1804. will happen

  1805. because we

  1806. don't do it

  1807. what about you

  1808. guys at

  1809. home

  1810. if you

  1811. don't clean

  1812. your room

  1813. no pocket

  1814. money this

  1815. month

  1816. don't do

  1817. the dishes

  1818. no TV

  1819. tonight

  1820. naturally

  1821. we're motivated

  1822. and Paul

  1823. has a warning

  1824. for those

  1825. who don't

  1826. obey

  1827. let's look

  1828. at these

  1829. next two

  1830. verses

  1831. in verse

  1832. 14 and

  1833. 15

  1834. take special

  1835. note of

  1836. anyone who

  1837. does not

  1838. obey our

  1839. instructions in

  1840. this letter

  1841. do not

  1842. associate with

  1843. them

  1844. in order

  1845. that they

  1846. may feel

  1847. ashamed

  1848. yet do

  1849. not regard

  1850. them as

  1851. an enemy

  1852. but warn

  1853. them as

  1854. a fellow

  1855. believer

  1856. Paul has

  1857. this warning

  1858. for those

  1859. who are

  1860. ignoring

  1861. what he

  1862. says

  1863. he speaks

  1864. about

  1865. discipline

  1866. within the

  1867. church

  1868. a huge

  1869. topic

  1870. we can't

  1871. cover today

  1872. but there

  1873. are a couple

  1874. of things

  1875. we can

  1876. learn

  1877. briefly

  1878. so the

  1879. Thessalonian

  1880. church

  1881. are not

  1882. to associate

  1883. with those

  1884. who don't

  1885. obey his

  1886. instructions

  1887. in this

  1888. letter

  1889. so this

  1890. is not

  1891. just for

  1892. all those

  1893. everywhere

  1894. who don't

  1895. obey

  1896. inside the

  1897. church and

  1898. out

  1899. because then

  1900. there will

  1901. be an awful

  1902. lot of

  1903. people not

  1904. to associate

  1905. with

  1906. but Paul

  1907. is saying

  1908. not to

  1909. associate

  1910. those within

  1911. the church

  1912. who don't

  1913. listen to

  1914. him

  1915. but why

  1916. so they

  1917. might feel

  1918. ashamed

  1919. so they

  1920. would see

  1921. that what

  1922. they're

  1923. doing

  1924. their

  1925. disobedience

  1926. has

  1927. consequences

  1928. and that

  1929. they would

  1930. feel ashamed

  1931. of how

  1932. they're

  1933. living

  1934. and not

  1935. just for

  1936. the laugh

  1937. so they'd

  1938. feel bad

  1939. but so that

  1940. they would

  1941. be brought

  1942. back

  1943. into that

  1944. fellowship

  1945. of believers

  1946. the purpose

  1947. of discipline

  1948. is not

  1949. to punish

  1950. for wrong

  1951. doing

  1952. but to

  1953. bring about

  1954. restoration

  1955. verse 15

  1956. do not

  1957. regard them

  1958. as an

  1959. enemy

  1960. but warn

  1961. them

  1962. as a

  1963. fellow

  1964. believer

  1965. and we

  1966. can learn

  1967. from this

  1968. attitude

  1969. of discipline

  1970. and as

  1971. grace and

  1972. I one

  1973. day

  1974. god willing

  1975. go on

  1976. to have

  1977. children

  1978. I hope

  1979. that our

  1980. attitude

  1981. to our

  1982. kids

  1983. in terms

  1984. of discipline

  1985. is not

  1986. simply to

  1987. punish them

  1988. for doing

  1989. wrong

  1990. because

  1991. they broke

  1992. a rule

  1993. punishment

  1994. but to

  1995. use discipline

  1996. to bring

  1997. them to a

  1998. place of

  1999. conviction

  2000. and restoration

  2001. that's the

  2002. point of

  2003. discipline

  2004. and god's

  2005. discipline to

  2006. us

  2007. to bring

  2008. us back

  2009. this is the

  2010. attitude we

  2011. need to have

  2012. as a church

  2013. family

  2014. as well as

  2015. our natural

  2016. families

  2017. or else

  2018. if there's

  2019. no gentleness

  2020. and love

  2021. we're in

  2022. danger

  2023. from moving

  2024. as john

  2025. calvin

  2026. puts it

  2027. from

  2028. discipline

  2029. to

  2030. butchery

  2031. just for

  2032. the sake

  2033. of it

  2034. discipline

  2035. needs to

  2036. be sprinkled

  2037. with love

  2038. and the

  2039. final

  2040. motivation

  2041. here

  2042. and our

  2043. ultimate

  2044. motivation

  2045. is the

  2046. lord jesus

  2047. himself

  2048. look at

  2049. verse 16

  2050. and 18

  2051. now may the

  2052. lord of

  2053. peace

  2054. himself

  2055. give you

  2056. peace

  2057. at all

  2058. times

  2059. and in

  2060. every

  2061. way

  2062. the

  2063. lord be

  2064. with

  2065. all of

  2066. you

  2067. verse 18

  2068. the

  2069. grace

  2070. of our

  2071. lord jesus

  2072. christ

  2073. be with

  2074. you all

  2075. the lord jesus

  2076. is the

  2077. enabler

  2078. as well

  2079. as the

  2080. reason

  2081. why we

  2082. do any

  2083. of this

  2084. work

  2085. if you

  2086. remember

  2087. back at

  2088. the beginning

  2089. of this

  2090. letter

  2091. paul begins

  2092. it thoroughly

  2093. focused on

  2094. jesus

  2095. and ends

  2096. it in a

  2097. similar way

  2098. our lives

  2099. are given

  2100. us

  2101. by him

  2102. johnny

  2103. prayed earlier

  2104. the very

  2105. breaths that

  2106. we have

  2107. are given

  2108. to us

  2109. by him

  2110. and we

  2111. can have

  2112. peace with

  2113. god

  2114. and each

  2115. other

  2116. through

  2117. jesus

  2118. and it's

  2119. only by

  2120. grace

  2121. through

  2122. faith in

  2123. him

  2124. and it's

  2125. this grace

  2126. that we

  2127. continually

  2128. need

  2129. as we

  2130. seek to

  2131. serve him

  2132. and do

  2133. his work

  2134. in this

  2135. world

  2136. so in

  2137. closing

  2138. i want to

  2139. read something

  2140. you don't need

  2141. to look it

  2142. up

  2143. we've heard

  2144. paul talk

  2145. about

  2146. this work

  2147. work is

  2148. so worthwhile

  2149. because we're

  2150. created for

  2151. it

  2152. and paul

  2153. prays that

  2154. there would

  2155. be this

  2156. work

  2157. he gives

  2158. us very

  2159. practical

  2160. instructions

  2161. as well

  2162. as a

  2163. motivation

  2164. so listen

  2165. to what he

  2166. says in

  2167. colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  2168. chapter 3

  2169. whatever you

  2170. do

  2171. work at

  2172. it with

  2173. all your

  2174. heart

  2175. as working

  2176. for the

  2177. lord

  2178. not for

  2179. human

  2180. masters

  2181. since you

  2182. know that

  2183. you will

  2184. receive an

  2185. inheritance

  2186. from the

  2187. lord

  2188. as a

  2189. reward

  2190. it is

  2191. the lord

  2192. christ

  2193. you are

  2194. serving

  2195. let's

  2196. pray

  2197. you are

  2198. here

  2199. you
