  1. We're reading from chapter 1, it's on page 883.

  2. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiachim, king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon,

  3. came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

  4. And the Lord delivered Jehoiachim, king of Judah, into his hand,

  5. along with some of the articles from the temple of God.

  6. These he carried off to the temple of his God in Babylonia and put in the treasure house of his God.

  7. Then the king ordered Ashpinaz, chief of his court officials,

  8. to bring in some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility.

  9. Young men, without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning,

  10. well informed, quick to understand and qualified to serve in the king's palace.

  11. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.

  12. The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king's table.

  13. They were to be trained for three years and after that they were to enter the king's service.

  14. Among these were some from Judah.

  15. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.

  16. The chief official gave them new names.

  17. To Daniel, the name Belteshazzar.

  18. To Hananiah, Shadrach.

  19. To Mishael, Meshach.

  20. And to Azariah, Abednego.

  21. But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine

  22. and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself in this way.

  23. Now God had caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel

  24. but the official told Daniel,

  25. I am afraid of my lord the king who has assigned your food and drink.

  26. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men of your age?

  27. The king would then have my head because of you.

  28. Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel,

  29. Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.

  30. Please test your servants for ten days.

  31. Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.

  32. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food

  33. and treat your servants in accordance to what you see.

  34. So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.

  35. At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished

  36. than any of the young men who ate the royal food.

  37. So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink

  38. and gave them vegetables instead.

  39. To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding

  40. of all kinds of literature and learning

  41. and Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.

  42. At the end of the time set by the king to bring them in

  43. the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.

  44. The king talked with them and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah

  45. so they entered the king's service.

  46. In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them

  47. he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom

  48. and Daniel remained there until the first year of king Cyrus.

  49. There's a little sheet there to hand out.

  50. If maybe somebody could get the box of pens as well and pass them around if anybody would like a pen

  51. please put your hand up and a pen can be brought to you.

  52. Thanks Connor for reading that.

  53. We're going to be looking at Daniel over the next number of weeks.

  54. You can follow the headings which will give you an indication of perhaps what it's about each chapter in the term programme

  55. and we will also be following it up on our Wednesday evening studies as well.

  56. So as we start into Daniel let's pray and ask for God's help.

  57. Our Father God we are amazed that a book, a story written hundreds of years ago

  58. is now preserved for us, before us in a language that we can understand.

  59. But we come to this story recognising that it is not just any story

  60. but it is God's word to us.

  61. God speaking his truth to us about himself, ourselves and the world in which we live.

  62. God's word to us about himself.

  63. God's word to us about himself.

  64. So Father please would you teach us, instruct us, command us, train us in the ways that we should go.

  65. Speak to us now, through your holy word we pray.

  66. Amen.

  67. The world that we live in is hostile and dangerous.

  68. With conflicts raging between Russia and Ukraine,

  69. the spread of ISIS across Syria and Iraq,

  70. the innocent slaughter of whole villages by Boko Haram,

  71. the continual news of murder and rape and violent assault on our own streets,

  72. the world we live in is not a safe place to live,

  73. especially if you are a follower of Jesus Christ.

  74. Listen to the news headings from around the world this past month.

  75. In Afghanistan, a Christian minister is kidnapped.

  76. In Cameroon, church buildings were burnt down and their houses looted.

  77. In China, a pastor sentenced to 12 years in prison.

  78. In Egypt, a few Christians sentenced to five years in prison.

  79. In India, a group of 100 Christians attacked by a mob.

  80. In Nigeria, gunmen opened fire on worshippers, killing some in four churches.

  81. In North Korea, tourists arrested and charged.

  82. In Pakistan, a Christian teenager raped and killed.

  83. In Syria, homes belonging to Christians confiscated.

  84. In Tanzania, a church building torched.

  85. In Vietnam, Bible school students taken away for interrogation.

  86. And let's not forget our friends who have been imprisoned on the border.

  87. Now we mightn't face the same pressures that we have just read.

  88. But I think we all feel the reality that our Christian views are no longer tolerated or accepted.

  89. We feel the squeeze of being rejected perhaps by family, maybe isolated by friends.

  90. The world that we live in as Christians is hostile and dangerous.

  91. And this is the kind of world that Daniel lived in.

  92. Having experienced the brutal onslaught of the Babylonian military forces,

  93. Daniel now finds himself somewhat of a slave in a foreign land,

  94. under the rule of an unfaithful king who stood opposed to Daniel's God.

  95. So the big question we want to start with at the very beginning is this.

  96. How do we, as God's people, live in a hostile world?

  97. How do we live in a hostile world?

  98. Well there are three things that we need to know.

  99. The first thing that we need to know is the way in which God rules the world.

  100. The way in which God rules the world.

  101. Look at verse 1.

  102. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah,

  103. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

  104. Now when we read about these two kings, this isn't just two kings at war.

  105. This is the world at war with God.

  106. You see, each nation, and it was well known at the time,

  107. that each nation had their own God, which each nation represented.

  108. Nations and gods were inseparable.

  109. So if you attacked another nation, in effect you were attacking their God.

  110. And the king who won that battle, therefore had the more powerful God behind them.

  111. Judah knew this.

  112. Babylon knew this.

  113. And more importantly, God knew this.

  114. Because God had chosen the people of Judah to be his special people.

  115. He had rescued them from Egypt.

  116. He had entered into a special relationship with them.

  117. And now they were to represent him in the world as his people.

  118. To live for him.

  119. So if Judah gets defeated, then God gets defeated.

  120. If Judah loses this battle with Babylon,

  121. then it's going to be reported all around the kingdom that God has lost the battle.

  122. So our expectation is, isn't it,

  123. that God is going to fight the Babylonians,

  124. and going to send them home battered and bruised.

  125. But look what happens in verse 2.

  126. The Lord delivered Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand,

  127. along with some of the articles from the temple of God.

  128. These he carried off to the temple of his God in Babylonia,

  129. and put in the treasure house of his God.

  130. You see, not only is the king defeated,

  131. but the temple, which was the very symbol of God's presence and power,

  132. has been pilfered.

  133. The physical objects or the articles from the temple

  134. that represented Judah's God,

  135. have now all been taken away,

  136. and now they're sitting as trophies in the treasure house of Babylon's God.

  137. God has lost the battle.

  138. God is no longer in control.

  139. All of this talk about God being the creator,

  140. the sustainer of the universe,

  141. the supreme authority,

  142. the one with absolute power,

  143. that's all just hot air.

  144. Now as we look out on the world today,

  145. isn't that our same conclusion?

  146. God powerful?

  147. Don't be so stupid.

  148. Look at all the wars out there.

  149. Look at all the violence that's going on.

  150. God in charge?

  151. Don't be so silly.

  152. Look at how his people are being persecuted and oppressed

  153. in every nation.

  154. And so we look and we watch,

  155. and we think God is a loser,

  156. and people think he's pathetic,

  157. he's weak,

  158. and he's a failure.

  159. But let's not rush to conclusions,

  160. and let's not read this introduction too quickly.

  161. Look at verse 2 again very carefully.

  162. Look what it says.

  163. And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim,

  164. king of Judah,

  165. into his hands.

  166. You see, the king of Babylon

  167. may have come with his military might,

  168. but it was the Lord

  169. who delivered them into his hands.

  170. And the chat about town may have been that Nebuchadnezzar rules,

  171. but history records for us

  172. that it is God who rules.

  173. You see, what seems like the death and the defeat of God

  174. is in reality

  175. the power and authority of God.

  176. The nation of Judah might feel that God has abandoned them,

  177. that he's left them,

  178. that he's weak,

  179. and he's lost control,

  180. and he's no good.

  181. And as we live in this world

  182. with all its hostility,

  183. we might think that God is lost,

  184. and that he's weak,

  185. and he's powerless,

  186. and somehow we're left on our own

  187. to try and cope.

  188. But don't forget the assurance of verse 2.

  189. The Lord delivered Jehoiakim,

  190. king of Judah,

  191. into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar.

  192. God is in charge.

  193. And at the very outset of the book,

  194. we are to get this message drummed into us,

  195. that here is a God who rules over the kings

  196. and the kingdoms of this world.

  197. He orders events as he wills.

  198. He does what he pleases

  199. to accomplish his plan and his purpose.

  200. This is the way in which God rules.

  201. So the first thing we need to know

  202. as we live in the hostile world

  203. is to know the way in which God rules.

  204. He is in charge.

  205. The second thing we need to know

  206. is the way we should live.

  207. Look at verse 3.

  208. After the siege,

  209. which was horrific,

  210. and the people were taken into slavery,

  211. we read in verse 3

  212. that the king ordered Ashpenaz,

  213. chief of the court officials,

  214. to bring some of the Israelites

  215. from the royal family and nobility,

  216. young men

  217. without any physical defect,

  218. handsome,

  219. showing aptitude for every kind of learning,

  220. well-informed,

  221. quick to understand,

  222. and qualified to serve

  223. in the king's palace.

  224. And among those,

  225. look at verse 6,

  226. were some who were from Judah,

  227. Daniel,

  228. Hananiah,

  229. Mishael,

  230. and Azariah,

  231. all taken.

  232. Now these lads were the pick of the crop,

  233. weren't they?

  234. They had the looks,

  235. they had the brains,

  236. and they had the body.

  237. But here we find them,

  238. not with any special treatment,

  239. but here they are

  240. under the oppressive rule of a king,

  241. who opposed their god,

  242. and forces them

  243. into a program

  244. or a regime of assimilation.

  245. He wants to turn these young men

  246. into Babylonians.

  247. And they had a very clever way to do it.

  248. They had to, first of all,

  249. learn a new culture.

  250. So look at the rest of verse 4.

  251. He was to teach them,

  252. these young men,

  253. the language

  254. and the literature

  255. of the Babylonians.

  256. They would have to learn history

  257. from their perspective.

  258. They would have to learn

  259. all about their culture

  260. and the way that they do things.

  261. And,

  262. they had to adopt

  263. to new customs.

  264. Verse 5.

  265. They had to eat

  266. what the king wanted them to eat.

  267. The king assigned them

  268. a daily amount of food

  269. and wine

  270. from the king's table.

  271. And they were to be trained

  272. for three years.

  273. And after that,

  274. they would enter the king's service.

  275. And in case

  276. they ever got any illusions

  277. as to thinking

  278. of going back,

  279. they were given

  280. a complete new identity.

  281. Verse 7.

  282. The chief official

  283. gave them new names.

  284. And all their new names

  285. were named after

  286. Babylonian gods.

  287. So to Daniel,

  288. he would be called

  289. Belshazzar,

  290. to Hananiah,

  291. Shadrach,

  292. to Mishael,

  293. Meshach,

  294. and to Azariah,

  295. Abednego.

  296. The message

  297. was plain and simple.

  298. You are no longer

  299. God's people.

  300. You are now

  301. Babylonian people.

  302. At every point

  303. of their life,

  304. they were to conform

  305. to this new way

  306. of living.

  307. They were to be like

  308. the people around them

  309. and they were to live

  310. like the people around them.

  311. And isn't that

  312. the pressure

  313. that God's people face

  314. every single day?

  315. to be like

  316. those around us,

  317. to become

  318. like the world,

  319. to think

  320. like the world,

  321. to behave

  322. like the world,

  323. to live

  324. like the world.

  325. We've got to

  326. change our views

  327. on marriage

  328. and become

  329. politically correct.

  330. We mustn't be

  331. so narrow-minded

  332. on abortion

  333. we must adapt

  334. to the culture.

  335. we must accept

  336. that there isn't

  337. just one truth

  338. but whatever

  339. you determine

  340. is true.

  341. We've got to

  342. learn to conform.

  343. We've got to

  344. fit in

  345. to everybody else

  346. and that's the

  347. pressure we all

  348. face every single

  349. day

  350. as we go to

  351. school or college

  352. or go to work

  353. or wherever we are.

  354. So how are we

  355. to live

  356. in this

  357. hostile environment?

  358. well,

  359. God calls us

  360. to remain

  361. loyal

  362. to him,

  363. to make

  364. deliberate

  365. choices

  366. to be loyal

  367. to him.

  368. Look at

  369. verse 8.

  370. But Daniel

  371. resolved

  372. not to

  373. defile himself

  374. with the

  375. royal food

  376. and wine

  377. and he

  378. asked the

  379. chief official

  380. for permission

  381. not to

  382. defile himself

  383. in this way.

  384. Now that

  385. seems quite

  386. strange.

  387. Daniel was

  388. willing to

  389. live in a

  390. new culture.

  391. He didn't

  392. fight that.

  393. He was

  394. willing to

  395. accept a

  396. new name

  397. and accept

  398. that,

  399. well,

  400. I'll be

  401. called

  402. Belshazzar.

  403. I'll put

  404. up with

  405. that.

  406. But I'm

  407. not going

  408. to eat

  409. the food.

  410. Instead,

  411. he tells us

  412. in verse 12,

  413. he says to

  414. one of the

  415. officials,

  416. please test

  417. your servants

  418. for ten

  419. days.

  420. Give us

  421. nothing but

  422. vegetables to

  423. eat and

  424. water to

  425. drink.

  426. Why was

  427. he so

  428. against

  429. eating the

  430. king's

  431. food?

  432. Well,

  433. this is not

  434. a campaign

  435. for more

  436. vegetarians

  437. or to

  438. save the

  439. furry

  440. animals.

  441. This is

  442. all about

  443. loyalty to

  444. God.

  445. You see,

  446. the custom

  447. of accepting

  448. food from

  449. the king

  450. was to

  451. show loyalty

  452. to the

  453. king.

  454. If you

  455. had steak

  456. with the

  457. king,

  458. you are

  459. entering

  460. into a

  461. covenant

  462. with the

  463. king.

  464. So to

  465. eat the

  466. king's

  467. food

  468. was to

  469. turn your

  470. back on

  471. God.

  472. It was to

  473. break loyalty

  474. with God

  475. and to

  476. align yourself

  477. to say,

  478. here's my

  479. new king,

  480. my new

  481. lord,

  482. my new

  483. master.

  484. And Daniel

  485. wouldn't

  486. do that.

  487. God

  488. will

  489. be

  490. and we

  491. too

  492. have to

  493. make our

  494. stand

  495. in this

  496. hostile

  497. world

  498. to hold

  499. to the

  500. fact

  501. that

  502. scripture

  503. is

  504. the supreme

  505. authority,

  506. that

  507. Jesus

  508. Christ

  509. is

  510. the

  511. absolute

  512. truth.

  513. It

  514. might

  515. seem

  516. so

  517. small

  518. and

  519. insignificant,

  520. but it's

  521. by those

  522. little

  523. choices

  524. of

  525. obeying

  526. scripture

  527. and

  528. trusting

  529. Christ

  530. with our

  531. lives

  532. that we

  533. show to

  534. a

  535. watching

  536. world

  537. where

  538. our

  539. loyalty

  540. lies,

  541. that my

  542. devotion

  543. and my

  544. loyalty

  545. is to

  546. God

  547. and his

  548. word

  549. and to

  550. his

  551. son

  552. the

  553. Lord

  554. Jesus

  555. Christ.

  556. But let's

  557. remember,

  558. we don't

  559. do this

  560. alone.

  561. Look very

  562. carefully here

  563. at what's

  564. going on.

  565. The God

  566. who rules

  567. over this

  568. world

  569. is present

  570. with us

  571. in the

  572. world

  573. to help

  574. us as we

  575. face the

  576. hostilities

  577. and the

  578. pressures

  579. all around

  580. us.

  581. So look

  582. at verse

  583. 9.

  584. Now

  585. God

  586. had

  587. caused

  588. the

  589. official

  590. to show

  591. favour

  592. and sympathy

  593. to Daniel.

  594. It's a

  595. little bit

  596. like verse

  597. 2.

  598. The

  599. Lord

  600. delivered.

  601. Now

  602. it's

  603. saying

  604. God

  605. caused

  606. the

  607. official

  608. to show

  609. favour

  610. to

  611. Daniel.

  612. We're

  613. not

  614. sure

  615. how

  616. the

  617. official

  618. managed

  619. to

  620. allow

  621. Daniel

  622. his

  623. vegetables

  624. and

  625. his

  626. water

  627. without

  628. the

  629. king

  630. finding

  631. out.

  632. We

  633. don't

  634. know

  635. if

  636. he

  637. bribed

  638. the

  639. chef

  640. for

  641. what

  642. he

  643. did.

  644. But

  645. we

  646. do

  647. know

  648. that

  649. God

  650. caused

  651. the

  652. official

  653. to be

  654. favourable

  655. to

  656. Daniel.

  657. God

  658. had

  659. not

  660. abandoned

  661. Daniel.

  662. Yes

  663. they were

  664. in a

  665. foreign

  666. land.

  667. Yes

  668. they were

  669. in a

  670. different

  671. place.

  672. But

  673. God

  674. hadn't

  675. left

  676. them.

  677. God

  678. was

  679. present

  680. in

  681. the

  682. pressure

  683. and

  684. he

  685. turned

  686. the

  687. heart

  688. of

  689. his

  690. enemy

  691. to

  692. be

  693. sympathetic

  694. towards

  695. Daniel.

  696. So

  697. verse

  698. 16

  699. the

  700. guard

  701. took

  702. away

  703. their

  704. choice

  705. food

  706. and

  707. the

  708. wine

  709. that

  710. they

  711. were

  712. to

  713. drink

  714. and

  715. gave

  716. them

  717. vegetables

  718. instead.

  719. Amazing.

  720. God

  721. turning

  722. somebody

  723. to work

  724. for the

  725. good

  726. of

  727. his

  728. people.

  729. You

  730. see

  731. when we

  732. face

  733. the

  734. pressures

  735. of

  736. this

  737. hostile

  738. world

  739. when

  740. we

  741. are

  742. being

  743. pushed

  744. and

  745. squeezed

  746. to

  747. conform

  748. and

  749. fit

  750. in

  751. our

  752. response

  753. is to

  754. remain

  755. loyal

  756. and

  757. obedient

  758. to

  759. God

  760. to

  761. trust

  762. that

  763. God

  764. is

  765. always

  766. ruling

  767. over

  768. our

  769. lives

  770. and

  771. the

  772. lives

  773. of

  774. everybody

  775. else

  776. around

  777. about

  778. us

  779. and

  780. we

  781. mightn't

  782. even

  783. see

  784. it

  785. we

  786. mightn't

  787. even

  788. feel

  789. it

  790. but

  791. God

  792. is

  793. present

  794. with

  795. us

  796. when

  797. we

  798. go

  799. to

  800. work

  801. when

  802. we

  803. go

  804. to

  805. college

  806. he

  807. is

  808. with

  809. us

  810. in

  811. the

  812. pressures

  813. of

  814. the

  815. world

  816. ruling

  817. over

  818. all

  819. things

  820. to

  821. work

  822. to

  823. the

  824. good

  825. for

  826. his

  827. people

  828. so

  829. we

  830. need

  831. to

  832. know

  833. how

  834. God

  835. rules

  836. we

  837. need

  838. to

  839. know

  840. how

  841. we

  842. are

  843. to

  844. live

  845. and

  846. third

  847. we

  848. need

  849. to

  850. know

  851. the

  852. way

  853. in

  854. which

  855. God

  856. works

  857. the

  858. way

  859. in

  860. which

  861. God

  862. works

  863. as

  864. he

  865. rules

  866. this

  867. world

  868. and

  869. as

  870. we

  871. live

  872. loyal

  873. to

  874. him

  875. you

  876. see

  877. our

  878. hope

  879. I

  880. think

  881. is

  882. this

  883. and

  884. we

  885. probably

  886. prayed

  887. it

  888. I've

  889. prayed

  890. it

  891. that

  892. God

  893. would

  894. somehow

  895. ease

  896. the

  897. pressure

  898. could

  899. you

  900. just

  901. make

  902. things

  903. a

  904. little

  905. bit

  906. easier

  907. for

  908. me

  909. maybe

  910. we've

  911. even

  912. asked

  913. God

  914. to

  915. take

  916. us

  917. out

  918. of

  919. the

  920. hostility

  921. or

  922. out

  923. of

  924. the

  925. pressure

  926. that

  927. we

  928. find

  929. ourselves

  930. in

  931. remove

  932. it

  933. from

  934. us

  935. take

  936. me

  937. out

  938. of

  939. the

  940. situation

  941. but

  942. rather than

  943. take

  944. us

  945. out

  946. God

  947. keeps

  948. us

  949. in

  950. and

  951. works

  952. through

  953. us

  954. in

  955. the

  956. hostility

  957. we see

  958. this in

  959. three ways

  960. first

  961. look at

  962. how God

  963. works

  964. through

  965. Daniel

  966. look at

  967. verse 17

  968. to these

  969. four young

  970. men

  971. God

  972. gave

  973. knowledge

  974. and

  975. understanding

  976. of all

  977. kinds

  978. of

  979. literature

  980. and

  981. learning

  982. you see

  983. rather than

  984. take them

  985. out of

  986. their

  987. situation

  988. he

  989. gives

  990. them

  991. what

  992. they

  993. need

  994. in

  995. the

  996. situation

  997. he

  998. provides

  999. them

  1000. with

  1001. learning

  1002. and

  1003. understanding

  1004. so that

  1005. they

  1006. can

  1007. be

  1008. in

  1009. the

  1010. situation

  1011. verse

  1012. 18

  1013. so at

  1014. the end

  1015. of time

  1016. set by

  1017. the king

  1018. to bring

  1019. them

  1020. in

  1021. the chief

  1022. official

  1023. presented

  1024. them to

  1025. Nebuchadnezzar

  1026. and the

  1027. king talked

  1028. with them

  1029. and he

  1030. found

  1031. none

  1032. equal

  1033. to

  1034. Daniel

  1035. Hananiah

  1036. Mishael

  1037. and Azariah

  1038. so they

  1039. entered

  1040. the king's

  1041. service

  1042. at the

  1043. beginning

  1044. of chapter

  1045. one

  1046. God

  1047. looks like

  1048. he's

  1049. dead

  1050. buried

  1051. and

  1052. defeated

  1053. by the

  1054. end

  1055. of chapter

  1056. one

  1057. God

  1058. is

  1059. ruling

  1060. with

  1061. all

  1062. power

  1063. and

  1064. all

  1065. authority

  1066. God

  1067. has

  1068. preserved

  1069. his

  1070. people

  1071. he

  1072. has

  1073. placed

  1074. them

  1075. in

  1076. his

  1077. place

  1078. right

  1079. at the

  1080. very

  1081. heart

  1082. of the

  1083. kingdom

  1084. of

  1085. Babylon

  1086. right

  1087. with an

  1088. access

  1089. to the

  1090. king

  1091. who

  1092. is

  1093. on

  1094. the

  1095. throne

  1096. who

  1097. thought

  1098. he

  1099. had

  1100. buried

  1101. Judah's

  1102. gods

  1103. isn't

  1104. that

  1105. incredible

  1106. in

  1107. fact

  1108. look at

  1109. verse

  1110. 20

  1111. in

  1112. every

  1113. matter

  1114. of

  1115. wisdom

  1116. and

  1117. understanding

  1118. about

  1119. which

  1120. the

  1121. king

  1122. questioned

  1123. them

  1124. he

  1125. found

  1126. them

  1127. ten

  1128. times

  1129. better

  1130. than

  1131. all

  1132. the

  1133. magicians

  1134. and

  1135. enchanters

  1136. in the

  1137. whole

  1138. of his

  1139. kingdom

  1140. and

  1141. what

  1142. we'll

  1143. discover

  1144. as we

  1145. read

  1146. through

  1147. Daniel

  1148. in the

  1149. unfolding

  1150. chapters

  1151. is that

  1152. Daniel

  1153. is the

  1154. one who

  1155. comes to

  1156. the

  1157. aid of

  1158. the

  1159. king

  1160. time

  1161. and

  1162. time

  1163. again

  1164. he's

  1165. the

  1166. one

  1167. who

  1168. can

  1169. interpret

  1170. the

  1171. dreams

  1172. he's

  1173. the

  1174. one

  1175. who

  1176. speaks

  1177. God's

  1178. truth

  1179. he's

  1180. the

  1181. one

  1182. who

  1183. witnesses

  1184. to

  1185. the

  1186. king

  1187. and

  1188. God

  1189. will

  1190. use

  1191. Daniel

  1192. to

  1193. turn

  1194. king

  1195. Nebuchadnezzar's

  1196. heart

  1197. towards

  1198. God

  1199. God

  1200. may

  1201. appear

  1202. to the

  1203. watching

  1204. world

  1205. that he

  1206. is weak

  1207. and powerless

  1208. and useless

  1209. dead

  1210. and buried

  1211. but he

  1212. is alive

  1213. and well

  1214. and he

  1215. is at work

  1216. through his

  1217. people

  1218. in the

  1219. pressure

  1220. and in

  1221. the

  1222. hostility

  1223. and if

  1224. we're in

  1225. any doubt

  1226. look at

  1227. verse 21

  1228. look at

  1229. this little

  1230. statement

  1231. at the

  1232. very end

  1233. and

  1234. Daniel

  1235. remained

  1236. there

  1237. until

  1238. the

  1239. first

  1240. year

  1241. of

  1242. king

  1243. Cyrus

  1244. well

  1245. who's

  1246. king

  1247. Cyrus

  1248. where

  1249. did

  1250. he

  1251. come

  1252. from

  1253. well

  1254. we'll

  1255. find out

  1256. about

  1257. him

  1258. later

  1259. on

  1260. in

  1261. chapters

  1262. 10

  1263. I think

  1264. it is

  1265. he was

  1266. the

  1267. king

  1268. of the

  1269. Persian

  1270. empire

  1271. they

  1272. were

  1273. the

  1274. ones

  1275. that

  1276. came

  1277. in

  1278. and

  1279. defeated

  1280. the

  1281. Babylonian

  1282. empire

  1283. Nebuchadnezzar

  1284. will

  1285. go

  1286. the

  1287. Babylonian

  1288. empire

  1289. will

  1290. go

  1291. kings

  1292. will

  1293. go

  1294. kingdoms

  1295. will

  1296. go

  1297. but

  1298. God's

  1299. man

  1300. Daniel

  1301. is

  1302. still

  1303. there

  1304. he

  1305. preserves

  1306. his

  1307. people

  1308. in

  1309. his

  1310. place

  1311. and

  1312. rather

  1313. than

  1314. take us

  1315. out of

  1316. the

  1317. hostility

  1318. rather

  1319. than

  1320. ease

  1321. the

  1322. pressure

  1323. that

  1324. we're

  1325. in

  1326. he

  1327. works

  1328. with

  1329. us

  1330. and

  1331. through

  1332. us

  1333. in

  1334. the

  1335. hostility

  1336. so

  1337. God

  1338. works

  1339. through

  1340. Daniel

  1341. but

  1342. isn't

  1343. this

  1344. how

  1345. God

  1346. ultimately

  1347. works

  1348. all

  1349. of

  1350. the

  1351. time

  1352. he

  1353. works

  1354. through

  1355. his

  1356. son

  1357. the

  1358. Lord

  1359. Jesus

  1360. in

  1361. the

  1362. same

  1363. way

  1364. look

  1365. at

  1366. Philippians

  1367. with

  1368. me

  1369. go

  1370. to

  1371. Philippians

  1372. I

  1373. haven't

  1374. got a

  1375. page

  1376. number

  1377. so

  1378. if

  1379. somebody

  1380. has

  1381. got

  1382. it

  1383. there

  1384. they

  1385. can

  1386. call

  1387. it

  1388. out

  1389. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1390. chapter

  1391. 2

  1392. 1179

  1393. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1394. chapter

  1395. 2

  1396. look

  1397. at

  1398. the

  1399. way

  1400. in

  1401. God

  1402. works

  1403. through

  1404. his

  1405. people

  1406. especially

  1407. through

  1408. his

  1409. son

  1410. you

  1411. see

  1412. God

  1413. is

  1414. not

  1415. immune

  1416. from

  1417. the

  1418. suffering

  1419. and

  1420. the

  1421. hostility

  1422. of

  1423. this

  1424. world

  1425. he

  1426. doesn't

  1427. stand

  1428. back

  1429. and

  1430. say

  1431. I'm

  1432. not

  1433. going

  1434. to

  1435. be

  1436. a

  1437. part

  1438. of

  1439. it

  1440. what

  1441. does

  1442. he

  1677. God

  1678. the

  1683. didn't

  1684. remove

  1685. himself

  1686. from

  1687. the

  1702. bring

  1703. salvation

  1704. to

  1714. Lord

  1715. victorious

  1716. over

  1717. everyone

  1718. and

  1719. everything

  1720. and

  1721. he

  1722. continues

  1742. you

  1743. see

  1744. Jesus

  1745. didn't

  1747. save

  1748. us

  1749. to

  1750. take

  1751. us

  1752. out

  1753. of

  1754. the

  1756. he

  1761. us

  1762. back

  1763. into

  1764. the

  1765. world

  1766. he

  1767. rescued

  1768. us

  1769. he

  1770. entered

  1771. into

  1772. a

  1773. relationship

  1774. with

  1775. us

  1776. so

  1777. that

  1778. we

  1781. might

  1782. represent

  1783. him

  1784. in

  1786. world

  1787. in

  1788. which

  1789. we

  1791. he

  1793. us

  1794. to

  1795. be

  1796. like

  1797. a

  1798. Daniel

  1799. live

  1817. I

  1818. know

  1819. it's

  1820. not

  1821. easy

  1822. and

  1823. I

  1824. know

  1825. that

  1826. it's

  1827. tough

  1828. and

  1829. you

  1830. maybe

  1831. are

  1832. frightened

  1833. at

  1834. the

  1835. very

  1836. prospect

  1837. of

  1838. going

  1839. back

  1840. to

  1841. college

  1842. or

  1843. back

  1844. to

  1845. school

  1846. maybe

  1847. you're

  1848. the

  1849. only

  1850. Christian

  1851. in

  1852. your

  1853. classroom

  1854. maybe

  1855. you're

  1856. the

  1857. only

  1858. Christian

  1859. in

  1860. your

  1861. peer

  1862. group

  1863. and

  1864. you're

  1865. wondering

  1866. how

  1867. you're

  1868. going to

  1869. stand up

  1870. maybe

  1871. you're

  1872. the only

  1873. witness

  1874. the Christian

  1875. witness

  1876. in your

  1877. workplace

  1878. and

  1879. the

  1880. pressure

  1881. will

  1882. be

  1883. on

  1884. and

  1885. the

  1886. hostility

  1887. will

  1888. be

  1889. there

  1890. but

  1891. God

  1892. has

  1893. rescued

  1894. you

  1895. and

  1896. he

  1897. calls

  1898. you

  1899. to

  1900. be

  1901. his

  1902. representative

  1903. and

  1904. he

  1905. gives

  1906. us

  1907. something

  1908. much

  1909. greater

  1910. than

  1911. just

  1912. knowledge

  1913. and

  1914. understanding

  1915. he

  1916. gives

  1917. us

  1918. the

  1919. power

  1920. of

  1921. his

  1922. Holy

  1923. Spirit

  1924. and

  1925. rather

  1926. than

  1927. take

  1928. you

  1929. out

  1930. of

  1931. the

  1932. situation

  1933. rather

  1934. than

  1935. remove

  1936. the

  1937. pressure

  1938. from

  1939. you

  1940. he

  1941. works

  1942. through

  1943. you

  1944. where

  1945. you

  1946. are

  1947. we

  1948. mightn't

  1949. get to

  1950. serve

  1951. in the

  1952. palace

  1953. of a

  1954. king

  1955. like

  1956. Daniel

  1957. but

  1958. guess

  1959. what

  1960. we

  1961. are

  1962. serving

  1963. the

  1964. king

  1965. of

  1966. kings

  1967. the

  1968. risen

  1969. lord

  1970. Jesus

  1971. the

  1972. one

  1973. who

  1974. rules

  1975. over

  1976. the

  1977. kingdoms

  1978. the

  1979. one

  1980. who

  1981. has

  1982. authority

  1983. and

  1984. power

  1985. over

  1986. all

  1987. things

  1988. and

  1989. all

  1990. people

  1991. working

  1992. that

  1993. power

  1994. in

  1995. you

  1996. and

  1997. through

  1998. you

  1999. to

  2000. accomplish

  2001. his

  2002. plan

  2003. and

  2004. his

  2005. purpose

  2006. and

  2007. as

  2008. we

  2009. go

  2010. through

  2011. we'll

  2012. see

  2013. how

  2014. God

  2015. used

  2016. Daniel

  2017. in

  2018. the

  2019. hostile

  2020. world

  2021. to

  2022. bring

  2023. kings

  2024. to

  2025. faith

  2026. in

  2027. Christ

  2028. to

  2029. reveal

  2030. God's

  2031. plan

  2032. for

  2033. the

  2034. world

  2035. and

  2036. God

  2037. does

  2038. that

  2039. through

  2040. you

  2041. to

  2042. be

  2043. his

  2044. witness

  2045. where

  2046. you

  2047. are

  2048. and

  2049. he

  2050. will

  2051. preserve

  2052. you

  2053. and

  2054. he

  2055. will

  2056. keep

  2057. you

  2058. and

  2059. he

  2060. will

  2061. enable

  2062. you

  2063. to

  2064. live

  2065. for

  2066. him

  2067. let's

  2068. pray

  2069. together

2070. father our mind boggles at the very thought

2071. of all that is going on in the world right now and all that has gone on in the past and all that will go on in the future

  2072. but to know

2073. that God is ruling from all time

  2074. from all eternity

2075. that he is in charge

2076. ruling the kings and kingdoms of this world

2077. ruling the events and circumstances

2078. and ruling over his people

2079. thank you for the assurance it brings us

2080. that we are not alone in this world

2081. but that you are with us

2082. and we ask that you would strengthen us

  2083. equip us

2084. that we may be loyal followers of you

  2085. tomorrow

  2086. tomorrow morning

2087. tomorrow morning when we face the pressure

2088. when we are facing being squeezed to fit in

2089. that we will stand strong for you

2090. in the knowledge that you have called us

  2091. to be your people

  2092. in the world

2093. thank you that you have given us the power of your Holy Spirit

2094. to live well for you

2095. help us to do that

2096. trusting that you are always working your purposes out

2097. we praise you for the great God that you are
