  1. In 1415, don't think any of you were around then were you? 600 years ago John Huff was burned alive at the stake.

  2. John had become a Christian after reading the Bible. He began to write and teach, encouraging other people of his day to turn to Christ and to read God's words.

  3. And having been told to stop his preaching and his writing, John defiantly refused.

  4. And because he wouldn't stop, John was bound by ropes, tied to a stake and burned alive.

  5. And as the flames engulfed him, he prayed this.

  6. Lord Jesus, it is for thee that I patiently endure this cruel death.

  7. In 2012, just two years ago, a church had been ordered to turn from following Christ or die.

  8. Refusing to deny their faith, they ran to their pastor's house for safety.

  9. But having been followed by their persecutors, the house was set on fire and 50 believers perished in the flames.

  10. Now what kind of God is this?

  11. That people would die for him rather than deny him and live.

  12. What kind of God is this?

  13. That people would literally go through the flames for him.

  14. Well, that's the situation we arrive at in Daniel chapter 3.

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  15. Daniel's three friends, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, faced the fiery furnace,

  16. but they chose death instead of life.

  17. Look at the very end of verse 28.

  18. It says there they were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any God except their own God.

  19. What kind of God is this that is worth risking your life for and dying for?

  20. Well, we're going to meet this God through these events.

  21. First, we meet a God who is worthy of our worship.

  22. A God who is worthy of our worship.

  23. The king's demand is very clear, isn't it?

  24. Verse 5.

  25. As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, the flute, the zither, the lyre, the harp, the pipes and all kinds of music,

  26. when the band gets going and the conductor starts up at the orchestra,

  27. you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.

  28. Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.

  29. Now, given those two options, bow or burn, it might seem quite obvious which one you'd take.

  30. If you want to save your life, well, bow down and worship.

  31. But here's the problem.

  32. Nebuchadnezzar's image is not a real God.

  33. It's a substitute God.

  34. It's not too long ago, you'll remember from chapter 2, that Nebuchadnezzar had the dream.

  35. Do you remember his dream about the great big statue?

  36. Gold head, silver chest, bronze thighs, iron legs, feet made of iron and clay,

  37. and they all represented, the four different metals represented four different kingdoms.

  38. And the dream was interpreted for Nebuchadnezzar, and this is what was revealed to him.

  39. Look at chapter 2 at the very end of verse 38.

  40. Chapter 2, the very end of verse 38.

  41. As the dream is interpreted, he says,

  42. You are that head of gold, Nebuchadnezzar.

  43. You are that kingdom, the head of gold.

  44. But, verse 39,

  45. After you, another kingdom will rise, inferior to yours.

  46. Your kingdom, Nebuchadnezzar, will be crushed and destroyed.

  47. Another is going to take its place,

  48. And ultimately, down at verse 44, chapter 2,

  49. In the time of those kings, the God of heaven

  50. will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed,

  51. nor will it be left to another people.

  52. It will crush all those kingdoms,

  53. and bring them to an end,

  54. but it itself, the kingdom of God, if you like,

  55. will endure forever.

  56. That was the dream that was interpreted to him.

  57. He's been introduced to the true God.

  58. But, rather than worship the true God,

  59. Nebuchadnezzar has set up a substitute God.

  60. Chapter 3, verse 1.

  61. King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold.

  62. Perhaps he thought if it was all gold,

  63. then his kingdom wouldn't be broken down.

  64. Ninety feet high,

  65. and nine feet wide.

  66. And it's set up on the plain of Dura,

  67. in the province of Babylon,

  68. where everybody could see it.

  69. In an act of defiance,

  70. King Nebuchadnezzar rejects the true God,

  71. and he replaces it with his own God.

  72. This is the God that the nations must come and worship.

  73. Now, Ender Kenny mightn't have the resources

  74. to set up a gold statue for us.

  75. But every day, you and I must decide

  76. which God we're going to worship.

  77. Will it be the God of secularism?

  78. Listen to this quote from a book called

  79. No Gods But God.

  80. He says this,

  81. When we cease to worship God,

  82. we do not worship nothing,

  83. we worship anything.

  84. We do not just eliminate God,

  85. we erect God's substitutes in his place.

  86. He goes on to say that the biblical writers

  87. call these replacement gods idols,

  88. or in this case, it was a statue.

  89. An idol, he says, can be a physical object.

  90. It could be your iPhone.

  91. It could be a property, your house.

  92. It could be an activity,

  93. a sport, or music.

  94. It could be a role, the job that you have,

  95. an institution, the club or society

  96. that you're a member of,

  97. a hope, I wish I was married,

  98. a pleasure, food or drink,

  99. a hero, a sporting star, anything.

  100. We can take and push God out of the way

  101. and replace it with someone else

  102. or something else.

  103. And that's what we've really done.

  104. We've set up our own gods that demand our worship.

  105. Something or someone that we serve

  106. in return for, in the hope that they will

  107. somehow give us happiness, pleasure,

  108. success, security.

  109. And we live for our gods,

  110. in the hope that they will give to us

  111. everything that we want.

  112. Nebuchadnezzar was offering his god

  113. as a god of security.

  114. Worship this god and you will be safe,

  115. you will be well,

  116. you will be in a wonderful kingdom

  117. with a great king over you.

  118. But here's the problem.

  119. They're substitute gods.

  120. They're counterfeit gods.

  121. They're not the true gods.

  122. You see, it's ironic

  123. that the god they must worship

  124. is actually man-made.

  125. Did you see that back in verse 1,

  126. chapter 3?

  127. King Nebuchadnezzar

  128. made an image.

  129. Ninety feet high,

  130. nine feet wide,

  131. and set it up.

  132. And in case we can't see

  133. the contradiction of a god

  134. that has to be made by a person,

  135. the writer keeps on reminding us

  136. right the way through the passage.

  137. So look at the end of verse 3.

  138. We're told there that

  139. all the officials assembled

  140. for the dedication of the image

  141. that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up,

  142. that he made.

  143. And they stood before it.

  144. End of verse 5.

  145. They were ordered

  146. that they must fall down

  147. and worship the image of gold

  148. that King Nebuchadnezzar

  149. has set up.

  150. You know that great big statue

  151. in the middle of the plain over there,

  152. the thing that he constructed

  153. with all the scaffolding around it?

  154. He set it up.

  155. He made it.

  156. End of verse 7.

  157. All the peoples, nations and men

  158. of every language

  159. fell down and worshipped

  160. the image of gold

  161. that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  162. It's made.

  163. This is a god

  164. that's supposed to be real,

  165. but it's fake.

  166. It's counterfeit.

  167. Listen to the psalmist,

  168. Psalm 115,

    Psalms 115:2–8

  169. verses 2 to 8.

  170. What they say about

  171. our so-called gods.

  172. The question is raised,

  173. why do the nations say,

  174. where is your God?

  175. Our God is in heaven.

  176. He does whatever pleases him.

  177. But their idols

  178. are silver and gold,

  179. made by the hands of men.

  180. They have mouths,

  181. but they cannot speak.

  182. Eyes,

  183. but they cannot see.

  184. They have ears,

  185. but they cannot hear.

  186. Noses,

  187. but they cannot smell.

  188. They have hands,

  189. and they can't feel.

  190. Feet,

  191. but they cannot walk.

  192. Nor can they utter a sound

  193. from their throat.

  194. Those who make them

  195. will be like them,

  196. utterly lifeless and worthless.

  197. And so will all

  198. who trust in them.

  199. You see,

  200. just as the people of Babylon

  201. bowed down to this

  202. lifeless statue of gold

  203. to gain security,

  204. if you bow down to this statue,

  205. you're not going to die.

  206. I'll look after you.

  207. You'll have security.

  208. You'll be fine.

  209. So we bow down

  210. to our dead idols

  211. of work,

  212. of relationships,

  213. of sport,

  214. whatever it may be,

  215. to gain success,

  216. to gain satisfaction,

  217. in the hope

  218. that they will somehow

  219. fill us.

  220. But the point is

  221. they're all God's substitute.

  222. They can't give

  223. the eternal security

  224. that each one of us

  225. long for.

  226. They're not the real deal.

  227. They're dead.

  228. And that's why

  229. the three friends

  230. will not bow down

  231. and worship.

  232. Man-made gods

  233. are not worthy

  234. of our worship.

  235. The philosophies

  236. that our society

  237. throws at us.

  238. Forget God.

  239. Don't believe in God.

  240. Go your own way.

  241. Go with your feelings.

  242. Follow the God

  243. of secularism.

  244. Write him out

  245. of your lives.

  246. Don't listen

  247. to the word of God.

  248. Listen to your own word,

  249. to your own mind.

  250. God.

  251. But it's dead.

  252. It's lifeless.

  253. It's not a true God.

  254. So,

  255. we meet the God

  256. who is worthy

  257. of worship

  258. for he is

  259. the one and only

  260. true God.

  261. Second,

  262. we meet a God

  263. who is able

  264. to save.

  265. A God

  266. who's able

  267. to save.

  268. The pressure

  269. to bow down

  270. and worship

  271. continues,

  272. verse 12.

  273. You have

  274. the officials

  275. here who've

  276. been following

  277. the king's commands

  278. but they've noticed

  279. something.

  280. They tell us

  281. in verse 12,

  282. there's some Jews

  283. whom you've set

  284. over the affairs

  285. of the province

  286. of Babylon.

  287. You know those

  288. three characters,

  289. Shadrach,

  290. Meshach and Abednego,

  291. who pay no attention

  292. to you,

  293. O king.

  294. They neither

  295. serve your gods

  296. nor worship

  297. the image of gold

  298. you have set up.

  299. Perhaps they've

  300. become very jealous

  301. of these three

  302. outsiders because

  303. they've all risen

  304. to positions of

  305. power and they're

  306. not in the positions

  307. of power and they

  308. want them kind of

  309. removed.

  310. Well,

  311. whatever reason

  312. for them telling

  313. tales to the king,

  314. it puts them

  315. in further danger

  316. of the fire.

  317. Verse 14,

  318. Nebuchadnezzar

  319. said to them,

  320. Is it true,

  321. Shadrach,

  322. Meshach and

  323. Abednego,

  324. that you do not

  325. serve my gods

  326. or worship

  327. the image of gold

  328. I have set up?

  329. Now,

  330. when you hear

  331. the sound of

  332. the horn,

  333. the flute,

  334. the zither,

  335. the lyre,

  336. the harp,

  337. the pipes,

  338. of all kinds

  339. of music,

  340. if you are

  341. ready to fall

  342. down and

  343. worship the

  344. image I made,

  345. very good,

  346. you'll be safe,

  347. you'll be okay.

  348. But if you do

  349. not worship it,

  350. you will be

  351. thrown immediately

  352. into the

  353. blazing furnace.

  354. then what god

  355. will be able

  356. to save you

  357. from my hand?

  358. Come on,

  359. what god

  360. is so great

  361. that he is

  362. greater than

  363. me?

  364. Bow down

  365. to my god

  366. and I will

  367. save you

  368. from the fire.

  369. Well,

  370. at one level

  371. there's no doubt

  372. that Nebuchadnezzar

  373. could save them

  374. from the flames.

  375. he had the

  376. power to do

  377. that.

  378. That's what

  379. he's saying

  380. to them here.

  381. But that's

  382. not where

  383. these three

  384. guys put

  385. their faith.

  386. Look at

  387. verse 16.

  388. What an

  389. extraordinary

  390. answer to

  391. give when

  392. they're being

  393. threatened with

  394. death itself

  395. in such a

  396. brutal fashion.

  397. Look at

  398. what this

  399. says in

  400. verse 16.

  401. Shadrach,

  402. Meshach and

  403. Abednego

  404. replied to

  405. the king,

  406. O

  407. Nebuchadnezzar,

  408. we do not

  409. need to

  410. defend ourselves

  411. before you

  412. in this

  413. matter.

  414. We don't

  415. even need

  416. to answer

  417. you.

  418. We don't

  419. need to

  420. try and

  421. get out

  422. of this

  423. threat and

  424. try to

  425. explain why

  426. we're not

  427. bowing down.

  428. You see,

  429. our God is

  430. more powerful

  431. than you.

  432. Our God

  433. is a

  434. saving God.

  435. Verse 17,

  436. if we are

  437. thrown into

  438. the blazing

  439. furnace,

  440. the God

  441. we serve

  442. is able

  443. to save

  444. us from

  445. it.

  446. And he

  447. will rescue

  448. us from

  449. your hand,

  450. O king.

  451. Absolute

  452. confidence

  453. and assurance

  454. under such

  455. pressure in

  456. God's ability

  457. to save.

  458. You can

  459. throw us

  460. into the

  461. flames,

  462. that's

  463. okay,

  464. because

  465. our God

  466. is able

  467. to save.

  468. How could

  469. they be so

  470. confident

  471. of God's

  472. salvation?

  473. Well,

  474. for them

  475. history has

  476. proved it.

  477. God had

  478. saved his

  479. people from

  480. Egypt.

  481. God had

  482. saved his

  483. people time

  484. and time

  485. again through

  486. the judges

  487. like Samson

  488. and Gideon.

  489. God had

  490. saved his

  491. people through

  492. kings like

  493. David and

  494. Solomon.

  495. Their whole

  496. history is

  497. an experience

  498. of a God

  499. who intervenes

  500. and saves

  501. time and

  502. time again.

  503. That is

  504. what this

  505. God does.

  506. And that's

  507. the confidence

  508. that we can

  509. have too.

  510. Because God

  511. is a God

  512. who delights

  513. in saving

  514. his people.

  515. He's more

  516. powerful than

  517. anyone or

  518. anything.

  519. After all,

  520. God has

  521. proved it in

  522. history ultimately

  523. through his

  524. son,

  525. Jesus Christ,

  526. who died but

  527. rose again from

  528. the grave,

  529. defeating death.

  530. We have a

  531. God who

  532. saves.

  533. That is

  534. what he

  535. does.

  536. Now,

  537. because our

  538. God is a

  539. saving God,

  540. we can

  541. trust him

  542. with our

  543. life.

  544. verse 18.

  545. But even

  546. if he does

  547. not save

  548. us,

  549. we want

  550. you to

  551. know,

  552. O king,

  553. that we

  554. will not

  555. serve your

  556. gods or

  557. worship the

  558. image of

  559. gold you

  560. have set

  561. up.

  562. Now,

  563. hang on a

  564. minute,

  565. that just

  566. seems like a

  567. contradiction,

  568. doesn't it?

  569. I just

  570. thought you

  571. said that

  572. God is a

  573. saving God.

  574. and now

  575. he's saying,

  576. well,

  577. maybe if he

  578. doesn't save

  579. us,

  580. so does

  581. he save

  582. or does

  583. he not?

  584. Well,

  585. look back

  586. carefully at

  587. verse 17.

  588. Read verse

  589. 17 again.

  590. If we are

  591. thrown into

  592. the blazing

  593. fire,

  594. the God

  595. we serve

  596. is able

  597. to save.

  598. They don't

  599. say God

  600. will save

  601. us,

  602. they say

  603. the God

  604. we serve

  605. is able

  606. to save

  607. us.

  608. He might

  609. not save

  610. us from

  611. the flames

  612. of the

  613. furnace.

  614. We might

  615. get thrown

  616. into the

  617. furnace,

  618. we might

  619. lose our

  620. life,

  621. we might

  622. die,

  623. but you

  624. know what?

  625. We know

  626. that our

  627. God even

  628. has power

  629. over death

  630. itself.

  631. And I

  632. think that's

  633. the message

  634. of verse

  635. 18.

  636. They are

  637. saying,

  638. you know

  639. what,

  640. you can

  641. throw us

  642. into the

  643. flames,

  644. but we

  645. worship a

  646. God

  647. where even

  648. death

  649. is not

  650. an obstacle

  651. to him.

  652. Now let

  653. me ask

  654. you this,

  655. what God

  656. substitutes

  657. can save

  658. like this?

  659. We can

  660. serve the

  661. God of

  662. pleasure,

  663. we sacrifice

  664. our lives

  665. to the

  666. idols of

  667. work,

  668. but they

  669. can't save

  670. us.

  671. us.

  672. We obey

  673. the demands

  674. that our

  675. gods place

  676. on us,

  677. that we

  678. must do

  679. more,

  680. we must

  681. give more,

  682. but for

  683. what purpose?

  684. They have

  685. no power

  686. over life,

  687. they have

  688. no power

  689. over death,

  690. they can't

  691. rescue us,

  692. they can't

  693. deliver us.

  694. And so the

  695. three friends

  696. refuse to

  697. bow in

  698. worship,

  699. because they

  700. trust in a

  701. God who

  702. is worthy

  703. of worship

  704. and who

  705. is able

  706. to save.

  707. So we

  708. meet a

  709. God who

  710. is worthy

  711. of worship,

  712. a God

  713. who is able

  714. to save,

  715. and we

  716. also meet a

  717. God who

  718. is willing

  719. to die

  720. for us.

  721. These guys

  722. wouldn't bow,

  723. so the

  724. threat has

  725. been carried

  726. out,

  727. verse 22.

  728. The king's

  729. command was

  730. so urgent,

  731. and the

  732. furnace so

  733. hot,

  734. we're told

  735. back in

  736. verse 19,

  737. that it was

  738. heated seven

  739. times hotter

  740. than normal,

  741. it had become

  742. so hot that

  743. the flames of

  744. the fire

  745. killed the

  746. soldiers who

  747. took up

  748. Shadrach,

  749. Meshach,

  750. and Abednego

  751. to the

  752. entrance of

  753. the furnace.

  754. The flames

  755. just engulfed

  756. them and

  757. burnt them.

  758. And these

  759. three men,

  760. verse 23,

  761. firmly tied

  762. by ropes,

  763. fell into

  764. the blazing

  765. furnace.

  766. It seems

  767. like the

  768. God of

  769. these three

  770. friends is

  771. unable to

  772. save.

  773. Where is

  774. he?

  775. Well,

  776. God has

  777. not abandoned

  778. them.

  779. He's actually

  780. present with

  781. them.

  782. Look at

  783. verse 25.

  784. The three

  785. of them

  786. have been

  787. cast into

  788. this burning

  789. furnace,

  790. and King

  791. Nebuchadnezzar

  792. is peering,

  793. looking into

  794. the flames.

  795. Verse 25,

  796. he says,

  797. look,

  798. can you

  799. see?

  800. I see,

  801. it's not

  802. three,

  803. four men

  804. walking around

  805. in the fire.

  806. They're

  807. unbound

  808. and unharmed,

  809. and the

  810. fourth one,

  811. can you

  812. see it?

  813. It looks

  814. like a

  815. son of

  816. the

  817. gods.

  818. Nebuchadnezzar

  819. then approached

  820. the opening

  821. of the

  822. blazing

  823. furnace and

  824. shouted,

  825. Shadrach,

  826. Meshach,

  827. and Abednego,

  828. servants of the

  829. Most High

  830. God,

  831. come out,

  832. come here.

  833. So Shadrach,

  834. Meshach,

  835. and Abednego

  836. came out

  837. of the

  838. fire.

  839. Who,

  840. who was

  841. this fourth

  842. person

  843. that was

  844. walking around

  845. with them?

  846. Well,

  847. Nebuchadnezzar

  848. tells us in

  849. verse 28

  850. that it was

  851. an angel.

  852. Was it

  853. more than

  854. an angel?

  855. Writers tend

  856. to think that

  857. it was the

  858. angel of

  859. God,

  860. the pre-incarnate

  861. Christ,

  862. present with

  863. the people.

  864. Well,

  865. we can't say

  866. for sure,

  867. but what is

  868. without doubt,

  869. here is a

  870. God who not

  871. only saves,

  872. here is a

  873. God who is

  874. present with

  875. his people as

  876. they go through

  877. the fire.

  878. God didn't

  879. take the

  880. furnace away

  881. from them,

  882. but nor did

  883. he abandon

  884. them in it.

  885. And this is

  886. the kind of

  887. God that we

  888. have.

  889. He is

  890. committed and

  891. faithful to

  892. his people,

  893. to his

  894. servants.

  895. He doesn't

  896. always take

  897. us away,

  898. take the

  899. hardships away

  900. from us.

  901. He doesn't

  902. always remove

  903. the difficulties

  904. of life.

  905. Very often,

  906. and mostly the

  907. case is that

  908. he lets us

  909. walk through

  910. the fire of

  911. suffering,

  912. but he is

  913. always present

  914. with us in

  915. the midst of

  916. our suffering.

  917. Our God is

  918. not just

  919. present though,

  920. as God was

  921. with these

  922. three guys.

  923. He is

  924. willing to

  925. die for us.

  926. Look how

  927. these three

  928. friends emerged

  929. from the fire.

  930. Comes in the

  931. middle of

  932. verse 27.

  933. They've come

  934. out of the

  935. fire and

  936. they're looking

  937. at them,

  938. and look what

  939. they saw.

  940. They saw that

  941. the fire had

  942. not harmed

  943. their bodies,

  944. nor was

  945. there a

  946. hair of

  947. their heads

  948. singed,

  949. their robes

  950. or their

  951. clothes were

  952. not scorched,

  953. and there

  954. wasn't even

  955. a smell

  956. of fire

  957. on them.

  958. Now this

  959. smacks to

  960. me of

  961. complete

  962. and

  963. absolute

  964. salvation.

  965. There's no

  966. sense in

  967. anything at

  968. all that

  969. anything was

  970. lost.

  971. Complete

  972. and absolute

  973. salvation.

  974. salvation.

  975. Now that

  976. can be our

  977. experience too,

  978. but in a

  979. much deeper

  980. way.

  981. You see,

  982. the God

  983. who walked

  984. into the

  985. furnace with

  986. these three

  987. friends,

  988. is the

  989. same God

  990. who walked

  991. into the

  992. ultimate

  993. furnace for

  994. you and

  995. for me.

  996. Jesus

  997. Christ

  998. wasn't

  999. immune to

  1000. the suffering

  1001. of this

  1002. world.

  1003. But he

  1004. entered into

  1005. this world

  1006. for you

  1007. and for

  1008. me,

  1009. and went

  1010. to the

  1011. cross.

  1012. But why?

  1013. Why did

  1014. he have to

  1015. do it?

  1016. Well,

  1017. like

  1018. Nebuchadnezzar,

  1019. we've all

  1020. rejected the

  1021. true and

  1022. living God.

  1023. We've all

  1024. from time to

  1025. time replaced

  1026. him with our

  1027. own false

  1028. gods,

  1029. our dead

  1030. gods.

  1031. We've all

  1032. broken the

  1033. first commandment,

  1034. gods,

  1035. you shall

  1036. have no

  1037. other gods

  1038. but me.

  1039. We've all

  1040. done it.

  1041. And instead

  1042. of giving

  1043. God,

  1044. the true

  1045. God,

  1046. the worship

  1047. he deserves,

  1048. we worship

  1049. someone else

  1050. or something

  1051. else.

  1052. We've looked

  1053. to other

  1054. things for

  1055. security in

  1056. our life.

  1057. And God

  1058. has made it

  1059. very clear

  1060. that all

  1061. those who

  1062. do not

  1063. worship

  1064. God

  1065. will be

  1066. judged

  1067. and

  1068. separated

  1069. from God

  1070. in hell

  1071. for all

  1072. eternity.

  1073. That's

  1074. what will

  1075. happen.

  1076. But Christ

  1077. intervened

  1078. into our

  1079. world.

  1080. He walks

  1081. where we

  1082. deserve to

  1083. walk.

  1084. In our

  1085. place,

  1086. Christ went

  1087. into the

  1088. fiery furnace

  1089. of judgment

  1090. for us.

  1091. On the

  1092. cross,

  1093. Christ

  1094. suffered the

  1095. flames of

  1096. God's

  1097. wrath.

  1098. He took

  1099. my sin,

  1100. your sin,

  1101. on himself

  1102. and the

  1103. judgment

  1104. fell on

  1105. him.

  1106. He went

  1107. into the

  1108. heart of

  1109. the fire

  1110. itself.

  1111. He descended

  1112. into hell

  1113. for us

  1114. so that

  1115. we don't

  1116. have to.

  1117. And all

  1118. those who

  1119. trust in

  1120. him,

  1121. the fire

  1122. of judgment

  1123. will pass

  1124. by.

  1125. And it

  1126. will be

  1127. like the

  1128. end of

  1129. verse 27,

  1130. where the

  1131. fire had

  1132. not harmed

  1133. their bodies,

  1134. nor was

  1135. there a

  1136. head of

  1137. their head

  1138. singed,

  1139. their clothes

  1140. not scorched,

  1141. there was

  1142. no smell

  1143. of fire

  1144. on them.

  1145. There

  1146. will be

  1147. no judgment,

  1148. there will

  1149. be no

  1150. condemnation,

  1151. there will

  1152. be no

  1153. separation.

  1154. Instead,

  1155. complete and

  1156. absolute

  1157. salvation,

  1158. eternal

  1159. security,

  1160. eternity,

  1161. with God

  1162. forever

  1163. and ever.

  1164. You see,

  1165. here is the

  1166. God who

  1167. not only

  1168. walks into

  1169. the flames

  1170. with us,

  1171. but he

  1172. walks into

  1173. the flames

  1174. to die

  1175. for you

  1176. and for me.

  1177. Now,

  1178. all of this

  1179. explains

  1180. why

  1181. John

  1182. Huss,

  1183. 600 years

  1184. ago,

  1185. and the

  1186. 50 members

  1187. from that

  1188. church

  1189. two years

  1190. ago,

  1191. were willing

  1192. to die

  1193. rather than

  1194. deny their

  1195. God.

  1196. Like Shadrach,

  1197. Meshach and

  1198. Abednego,

  1199. look at

  1200. verse 28,

  1201. the end

  1202. of verse 28,

  1203. they trusted

  1204. in him

  1205. and defied

  1206. the king's

  1207. command

  1208. and were

  1209. willing to

  1210. give up

  1211. their lives

  1212. rather than

  1213. serve or

  1214. worship any

  1215. God except

  1216. their own

  1217. God.

  1218. as

  1219. Nebuchadnezzar

  1220. himself would

  1221. say at the

  1222. end of

  1223. verse 29,

  1224. for no

  1225. other God

  1226. can save

  1227. in this

  1228. way.

  1229. They

  1230. worshipped a

  1231. God who

  1232. is not only

  1233. able to

  1234. save us,

  1235. a God

  1236. who is

  1237. present with

  1238. us,

  1239. but a

  1240. God who

  1241. is willing

  1242. to die.

  1243. Now,

  1244. let's just

  1245. make it a

  1246. little bit

  1247. more personal.

  1248. Is this

  1249. a God

  1250. you could

  1251. die for?

  1252. Is this

  1253. a God

  1254. I would

  1255. die for?

  1256. He's

  1257. walked through

  1258. the ultimate

  1259. furnace for

  1260. us so that

  1261. we may gain

  1262. eternal

  1263. security,

  1264. eternal life

  1265. with him.

  1266. That means

  1267. you and I

  1268. can face

  1269. into the

  1270. troubles of

  1271. this life

  1272. and know

  1273. that he

  1274. will never

  1275. abandon us.

  1276. Sometimes we

  1277. may feel the

  1278. flames are

  1279. raging,

  1280. but God

  1281. is present

  1282. with us.

  1283. He will

  1284. not leave

  1285. you.

  1286. He will

  1287. walk with

  1288. you through

  1289. the fire

  1290. of the

  1291. troubles that

  1292. you go

  1293. through.

  1294. It also

  1295. means that

  1296. you and I

  1297. can face

  1298. death itself

  1299. and know

  1300. that we are

  1301. safe and

  1302. secure.

  1303. For people,

  1304. for some,

  1305. and maybe

  1306. for somebody

  1307. here,

  1308. those flames

  1309. will be

  1310. actual,

  1311. real flames.

  1312. as you

  1313. die for

  1314. preaching

  1315. Christ,

  1316. where he

  1317. is violently

  1318. opposed,

  1319. people face

  1320. that kind

  1321. of death.

  1322. But for

  1323. those who

  1324. go through

  1325. those flames,

  1326. God will

  1327. raise you

  1328. up and

  1329. take you

  1330. to be with

  1331. him forever.

  1332. Whenever we

  1333. face death,

  1334. he is the

  1335. one and

  1336. sure place

  1337. to have

  1338. our faith.

  1339. death,

  1340. this is a

  1341. God we

  1342. can live

  1343. for.

  1344. This is a

  1345. God we

  1346. can even

  1347. die for

  1348. because he

  1349. died for

  1350. us.

  1351. Let's pray

  1352. together.

  1353. listen to

  1354. Jesus'

  1355. words.

  1356. Jesus

  1357. called the

  1358. crowd to

  1359. him along

  1360. with his

  1361. disciples and

  1362. said,

  1363. if anyone

  1364. would come

  1365. after me,

  1366. he must

  1367. deny

  1368. himself and

  1369. take up

  1370. his cross

  1371. and follow

  1372. me.

  1373. For whoever

  1374. wants to

  1375. save his

  1376. life will

  1377. lose it,

  1378. but whoever

  1379. loses his

  1380. life for me

  1381. and for the

  1382. gospel will

  1383. save it.

  1384. father,

  1385. teach us

  1386. to follow

  1387. you.

  1388. Teach us

  1389. to pick up

  1390. the cross

  1391. and walk

  1392. the path

  1393. that you

  1394. walked

  1395. in the

  1396. knowledge that

  1397. we are safe

  1398. and secure

  1399. for all

  1400. eternity.

  1401. Knowing that

  1402. our God

  1403. is able

  1404. to save

  1405. and even

  1406. if we

  1407. should enter

  1408. into troubles

  1409. or hardships,

  1410. we know

  1411. our God

  1412. will be

  1413. with us

  1414. and our

  1415. God will

  1416. take us

  1417. to his

  1418. eternal

  1419. kingdom

  1420. forever

  1421. and forever.

  1422. Give us

  1423. confidence to

  1424. stand strong

  1425. for you,

  1426. that we

  1427. would not

  1428. bow down

  1429. to the

  1430. idols of

  1431. this age,

  1432. but worship

  1433. you alone.

  1434. we pray

  1435. this for

  1436. your glory

  1437. and for

  1438. your honour.

  1439. Amen.
