  1. Nebuchadnezzar prays and exult and glorify the King of Heaven

  2. because everything he does is right and all his ways are just.

  3. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

  4. Start chapter 5 verse 1.

  5. King Balthazar gave a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles

  6. and drank wine with them.

  7. While Balthazar was drinking his wine,

  8. he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets

  9. that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem

  10. so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines,

  11. might drink from them.

  12. So they brought in the gold goblets

  13. that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem

  14. and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines,

  15. drank from them.

  16. As they drank the wine,

  17. they praised the gods of gold and silver,

  18. of bronze, iron, wood and stone.

  19. Suddenly, the finger of a human hand appeared

  20. and wrote on the plaster of the wall near the lampstand in the royal palace.

  21. The king watched the hand as it wrote.

  22. And then moving down to verse 25 over the page.

  23. This is the inscription that was written.

  24. Meany, Meany, Tekel, Parson.

  25. This is what these words mean.

  26. Meany, God has numbered the days of your reign

  27. and brought it to an end.

  28. Tekel, you have been weighed on the scales

  29. and found wanting.

  30. Perseus, your kingdom is divided

  31. and given to the Medes and the Persians.

  32. Then at Balthazar's command,

  33. Daniel was clothed in purple,

  34. a gold chain was placed around his neck

  35. and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler

  36. in the kingdom.

  37. That very night,

  38. Balthazar, king of the Babylonians,

  39. was slain

  40. and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom

  41. at the age of 62.

  42. Thanks.

  43. Thanks, Nick.

  44. Well, we've been looking at the book of Daniel,

  45. which in the context of what Phil has just been sharing

  46. is very relevant in a nation,

  47. an empire like Babylon

  48. with a dictatorial ruler such as Nebuchadnezzar.

  49. Very difficult to live as a Christian,

  50. somebody who followed God,

  51. but yet God used those people

  52. to bring about his purposes in that place.

  53. No king was greater than God.

  54. Kirsty's just handing around sheets there

  55. if you want to take notes this morning.

  56. And we're going to be following along

  57. from chapter five.

  58. As we start into our study this morning,

  59. let's pray

  60. and ask for God's help

  61. as we look at this together.

  62. Amen.

  63. Those who walk in pride,

  64. God is able to humble.

  65. Father, we come before you this morning

  66. in humility

  67. because we are, as we sung earlier,

  68. just a vapor.

  69. We are here a moment.

  70. But you are the God

  71. who reigns from before time begun

  72. and time eternity.

  73. As your creation,

  74. as your people,

  75. we bow before you

  76. and ask that you would speak to us

  77. and you would cause us

  78. to understand what it is

  79. to live before

  80. a mighty king

  81. such as you.

  82. Humble us

  83. and lead us in your ways.

  84. We ask it in Jesus' name.

  85. Amen.

  86. Well, keep your Bibles, please.

  87. Follow along.

  88. Chapter five.

  89. It all happened so quickly.

  90. He suddenly appears on the scene

  91. and then he disappears

  92. from the story.

  93. Look at verse one.

  94. King Belshazzar gave a banquet

  95. for a thousand of his nobles

  96. and drank wine with them.

  97. And then go to the end of the story,

  98. verse 30.

  99. That very night,

  100. Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians,

  101. was slain

  102. and Darius the Mede

  103. took over the kingdom

  104. at the age of 62.

  105. One moment he's drinking

  106. and dancing,

  107. the next

  108. he's defeated

  109. and dead.

  110. A king in his kingdom

  111. has come crashing down.

  112. Now there's about 25 years

  113. between the end of chapter 24

  114. and the beginning of chapter 5.

  115. Sorry, the end of chapter 4

  116. and the beginning of chapter 5.

  117. King Nebuchadnezzar has died.

  118. Babylon is still the mighty empire.

  119. He's still ruling

  120. with an iron fist.

  121. And the succession of kings

  122. from Nebuchadnezzar onwards

  123. has been a bit unstable.

  124. There's been lots of family feuds.

  125. There's been an assassination.

  126. The usual goings-on

  127. when a leader

  128. of such popularity

  129. as Nebuchadnezzar has died.

  130. But now as we get to chapter 25,

  131. we're introduced to Belshazzar.

  132. It's his time to rule.

  133. Time for another great king.

  134. But chapter 5

  135. is not just a lesson

  136. in Babylonian kings.

  137. This is a warning

  138. about the dangers

  139. of pride.

  140. Belshazzar's life

  141. can be summed up

  142. with this proverb

  143. from Proverb chapter 16, verse 5.

  144. The Lord detests

  145. the proud of heart.

  146. Be sure of this.

  147. They will not go unpunished.

  148. A summary of his life.

  149. The Lord detests

  150. all the proud of heart.

  151. Be sure of this.

  152. They will not go unpunished.

  153. So what do we learn

  154. from chapter 5?

  155. Well, three things

  156. we're going to look at together

  157. this morning.

  158. First,

  159. God is dead,

  160. so let's party.

  161. The story begins

  162. with a great party.

  163. Verse 1,

  164. let's read together.

  165. King Belshazzar

  166. gave a great banquet

  167. for a thousand

  168. of his nobles

  169. and drank wine with them.

  170. This is the party

  171. of all parties.

  172. Invite only.

  173. The who's who

  174. of the Babylonian empire.

  175. The movers

  176. and shakers.

  177. The planners

  178. and developers.

  179. The celebrities.

  180. The socialites.

  181. They're all there.

  182. Not forgetting

  183. the king's wives

  184. and the concubines

  185. that he's provided

  186. for the occasion.

  187. And the wine

  188. is flowing.

  189. But the king

  190. wants to do more

  191. than just throw a party.

  192. He wants to show off

  193. to these guests

  194. his great power.

  195. Look at verse 2.

  196. While Belshazzar

  197. was drinking his wine,

  198. he gave orders

  199. to bring in the gold

  200. and silver goblets

  201. that Nebuchadnezzar,

  202. his father,

  203. or predecessor,

  204. had taken from

  205. the temple in Jerusalem

  206. so that the king

  207. and his nobles,

  208. his wives,

  209. and his concubines

  210. might drink from them.

  211. Well, what's all that about?

  212. Well, when a king

  213. went and conquered

  214. another nation,

  215. what they would do

  216. is they would take items

  217. that represented

  218. the nation's god

  219. and then place them

  220. before their own god

  221. as a sign of victory.

  222. We're actually told this

  223. in chapter 1.

  224. If you flick back

  225. to chapter 1 of Daniel,

  226. it's the way the book

  227. is introduced to us.

  228. Chapter 1, verse 1.

  229. So, verse 1 says,

  230. In the third year

  231. of the reign of Jehoiakim,

  232. who was king of Judah,

  233. Nebuchadnezzar,

  234. who was king of Babylon,

  235. came to Jerusalem

  236. and besieged it.

  237. So he attacked it.

  238. Verse 2,

  239. when the Lord delivered

  240. Jehoiakim,

  241. king of Judah,

  242. into his hand,

  243. along with some

  244. of the articles

  245. from the temple of God.

  246. These Nebuchadnezzar

  247. carried off

  248. to the temple

  249. of his god

  250. in Babylonia

  251. and put them

  252. in the treasure house

  253. of his god.

  254. You see,

  255. not only is the king

  256. of Judah defeated,

  257. but the temple,

  258. which was the very symbol

  259. of God's presence

  260. and power,

  261. has been pilfered.

  262. The articles,

  263. in this case,

  264. the gold and silver goblets,

  265. have been taken

  266. from the temple,

  267. which represented

  268. or symbolised

  269. God's presence

  270. with his people,

  271. and they've now

  272. become trophies

  273. in the treasure house

  274. of the Babylon's god.

  275. So we can imagine

  276. the headline

  277. in the Babylonian times

  278. after that battle.

  279. Judah's god defeated,

  280. dead,

  281. and buried.

  282. Back to chapter 5.

  283. So when Belshazzar,

  284. in the middle of his party,

  285. orders for the gold

  286. and silver goblets

  287. to be brought,

  288. which came from the temple,

  289. you remember,

  290. he's making a very,

  291. very proud statement.

  292. He's basically saying

  293. to all his guests

  294. that have gathered,

  295. I'm king.

  296. I'm the one in charge.

  297. I'm in power.

  298. God is dead.

  299. So let's party.

  300. Verse 4.

  301. As they drank the wine,

  302. they praised the gods

  303. of gold,

  304. silver,

  305. of bronze,

  306. iron,

  307. wood,

  308. and stone.

  309. Now isn't that

  310. just a little picture

  311. of how the world lives?

  312. worship what you like.

  313. Do whatever satisfies you.

  314. If it brings you pleasure,

  315. enjoy it.

  316. After all,

  317. it's your life.

  318. You're answerable to no one.

  319. You're not bound by any morals.

  320. You do what you like.

  321. After all,

  322. God is dead,

  323. isn't he?

  324. So let's live life

  325. as a party.

  326. But God's not going

  327. to allow people

  328. to carry on

  329. presuming he's dead

  330. or assuming

  331. he has no power.

  332. The consequences

  333. are far too serious.

  334. Look at verse 5.

  335. In the middle

  336. of this party,

  337. suddenly,

  338. the fingers

  339. of a human hand

  340. appeared

  341. and wrote

  342. on the plaster

  343. of the wall

  344. near the lampstand

  345. in the royal palace.

  346. The king watched

  347. as the hand

  348. watched the hand

  349. as it wrote.

  350. His face

  351. turned pale,

  352. and he was so frightened

  353. that his knees

  354. knocked together

  355. and his legs

  356. gave way.

  357. Now the NIV,

  358. the translation

  359. that we're using here

  360. is a little bit

  361. too polite here.

  362. Literally,

  363. it's saying

  364. he pooped his pants.

  365. He's lost control

  366. of his bladder.

  367. The dancing stops.

  368. The music fades.

  369. The laughter

  370. and the singing

  371. are replaced

  372. by this deathly fear

  373. as they watch

  374. this hand

  375. on the wall.

  376. How does he respond?

  377. Well,

  378. in his foolish

  379. ignorance,

  380. verse 7,

  381. the king called out

  382. to the enchanters,

  383. the astrologers,

  384. and the diviners

  385. to be brought

  386. to him.

  387. Remember,

  388. these are the ones

  389. we've seen

  390. all the way

  391. through chapters 1 to 4,

  392. and every time

  393. they failed.

  394. But yet,

  395. he turns to them again.

  396. And he said

  397. to the wise men

  398. of Babylon,

  399. whoever reads the writing

  400. and tells me

  401. what it means,

  402. will be clothed

  403. in purple,

  404. will have a gold chain

  405. placed around his neck,

  406. and he will be made

  407. third highest ruler

  408. in the kingdom.

  409. Then all the king's

  410. wise men came in,

  411. but they could not

  412. read the writing

  413. or tell the king

  414. what it meant.

  415. Isn't it ironic

  416. that the gods

  417. he was just praising

  418. back in verse 4

  419. are now deaf

  420. and dumb

  421. to his cry

  422. for help?

  423. The gods

  424. that supposedly

  425. gave Babylon

  426. their great victories

  427. in battle

  428. and made them

  429. such an enormous

  430. and great empire

  431. are hopeless

  432. and helpless

  433. to do anything?

  434. Verse 9,

  435. So the king,

  436. Belshazzar,

  437. became even

  438. more terrified

  439. and his face

  440. grew more pale.

  441. Another change

  442. of trousers

  443. for the king.

  444. His nobles

  445. were baffled.

  446. The most powerful

  447. king in the world

  448. is paralysed

  449. with fear

  450. and there's nothing

  451. that he can do

  452. about it.

  453. He's hopeless

  454. and he's helpless.

  455. And the question is,

  456. why is he reduced

  457. to such a cowering mess?

  458. Well,

  459. I think the purpose

  460. is

  461. so that he would

  462. cry out to God

  463. something he fails

  464. to do.

  465. And sometimes

  466. that's the case

  467. for us.

  468. Life leaves us

  469. hopeless

  470. and helpless.

  471. The gods

  472. that we trust in

  473. fail us.

  474. People that we

  475. depend on

  476. leave us.

  477. Jobs that give us

  478. security

  479. are lost.

  480. Things that gave us

  481. pleasure

  482. are stripped away.

  483. Our health fades.

  484. Our mental abilities

  485. deteriorate.

  486. We're left afraid

  487. and fearful.

  488. And why?

  489. Well,

  490. maybe

  491. it's so that

  492. we will cry out

  493. to an all-powerful,

  494. all-loving

  495. God.

  496. God.

  497. The God

  498. who is not

  499. dead,

  500. but the God

  501. who lives

  502. and reigns

  503. forevermore.

  504. So,

  505. the first thing,

  506. God is dead,

  507. let's party.

  508. Second,

  509. God has spoken,

  510. so listen up.

  511. Living our life

  512. as if God is dead

  513. is serious,

  514. so God speaks

  515. into the situation.

  516. It starts off

  517. with an idea

  518. from the Queen.

  519. Look at verse 10.

  520. The Queen,

  521. hearing the voices

  522. of the King

  523. and his nobles,

  524. came into the

  525. banquet hall.

  526. Oh King,

  527. live forever,

  528. she said.

  529. Don't be alarmed,

  530. don't look so pale.

  531. She's got an answer,

  532. verse 11.

  533. There's a man

  534. in your kingdom

  535. who has the spirit

  536. of the holy gods

  537. in him.

  538. In the time

  539. of your father,

  540. he was found

  541. to have insight

  542. and intelligence

  543. and wisdom

  544. like that

  545. of the gods.

  546. This was their way

  547. of explaining

  548. God's divine

  549. interventions.

  550. King Nebuchadnezzar,

  551. your father,

  552. your father,

  553. the king.

  554. Remember Nebuchadnezzar,

  555. that all-powerful,

  556. great,

  557. ruling king?

  558. I say,

  559. appointed him

  560. chief of the magicians,

  561. enchanters,

  562. astrologers,

  563. and diviners.

  564. This man,

  565. Daniel,

  566. whom the king

  567. called Belshazzar,

  568. was found

  569. to have a keen mind

  570. and knowledge

  571. and understanding

  572. and also the ability

  573. to interpret dreams,

  574. explain riddles,

  575. and solve difficult problems.

  576. Call for Daniel.

  577. Go and get Daniel.

  578. He's the one

  579. who can tell you

  580. what the writing means.

  581. You see,

  582. from the very beginning

  583. of Daniel,

  584. we've seen that Daniel

  585. has been God's voice

  586. to the king of Babylon.

  587. God has spoken

  588. through the man

  589. that he has placed

  590. at the very heart

  591. of the kingdom.

  592. And he can speak

  593. straight into

  594. the king's life.

  595. The so-called wise men,

  596. the enchanters,

  597. the astrologers,

  598. they've all consistently

  599. failed.

  600. They've had nothing

  601. to be able to say.

  602. Man-made religion

  603. is always empty.

  604. But Daniel delivered

  605. every single time

  606. with absolute clarity

  607. because God was speaking

  608. through his man

  609. to the king.

  610. The question here is,

  611. is Belshazzar

  612. going to listen

  613. to what Daniel

  614. has to say?

  615. Well,

  616. with some reluctance,

  617. it seems that the king

  618. does call for Daniel.

  619. Verse 13,

  620. So Daniel was brought

  621. before the king

  622. and the king said to him,

  623. Are you Daniel?

  624. One of the exiles

  625. that my father,

  626. the king,

  627. brought from Judah?

  628. I've heard that

  629. the spirit of the gods

  630. is in you

  631. and that you have

  632. insight and intelligence

  633. and outstanding wisdom.

  634. Well,

  635. if he thinks

  636. that Daniel

  637. does have

  638. outstanding wisdom,

  639. why has Daniel

  640. been discharged

  641. from being ruler

  642. over all of Babylon

  643. and demoted

  644. from being chief

  645. of all the wise men,

  646. a position

  647. that King Nebuchadnezzar

  648. has given him?

  649. He's not in that position

  650. any longer

  651. under Belshazzar.

  652. It seems

  653. that Belshazzar

  654. has removed

  655. anyone to do

  656. with God

  657. from his presence.

  658. He's making

  659. a clear statement.

  660. We don't want

  661. any God talk

  662. around here.

  663. We don't want

  664. this religious business

  665. in the palace.

  666. To the king,

  667. Daniel was,

  668. as we read

  669. in verse 13,

  670. just an exile

  671. from Judah.

  672. He's a conquered slave.

  673. He's despised.

  674. He's rejected.

  675. He's a nothing.

  676. He's a nobody.

  677. He's not worth

  678. listening to.

  679. We don't need Daniel.

  680. But Daniel

  681. is God's voice

  682. to the king.

  683. God has something

  684. to say.

  685. And God

  686. intervenes

  687. into the king's

  688. life and brings

  689. Daniel yet again

  690. right to the very

  691. heart of power

  692. so he can speak

  693. to the king.

  694. Verse 17.

  695. Then Daniel

  696. answered the king,

  697. You may keep

  698. your gifts

  699. for yourself

  700. and give your

  701. rewards to someone else.

  702. You're not going

  703. to bribe me

  704. or tempt me

  705. or make me

  706. a little puppet.

  707. Nevertheless,

  708. I will read

  709. the writing

  710. for the king

  711. and I'll tell

  712. him what it means.

  713. God spoke

  714. to Belshazzar

  715. through Daniel

  716. and God

  717. also speaks

  718. to you

  719. and to me.

  720. His word

  721. is crystal clear

  722. but it seems

  723. sometimes

  724. that the world

  725. does not want

  726. to listen

  727. to God.

  728. We have

  729. despised

  730. and rejected

  731. God's voice

  732. to us,

  733. the one we

  734. call Jesus.

  735. The prophet

  736. Isaiah spoke

  737. about Jesus

  738. who was to come.

  739. Listen to these

  740. words from

  741. Isaiah 53.

  742. He was

  743. despised

  744. and rejected

  745. by men,

  746. a man of sorrows

  747. and familiar

  748. with suffering,

  749. like one

  750. from whom

  751. men hide

  752. their faces.

  753. He was despised

  754. and we esteemed

  755. him not.

  756. That's about

  757. Jesus.

  758. You want us

  759. to listen

  760. to Jesus?

  761. That despised,

  762. rejected,

  763. that crucified

  764. loser?

  765. You can't

  766. expect us

  767. to take seriously

  768. what Jesus

  769. has to say,

  770. can you?

  771. He's

  772. outdated.

  773. He's

  774. old-fashioned.

  775. Times have

  776. moved on.

  777. We don't

  778. need

  779. Jesus

  780. anymore.

  781. And so

  782. the world

  783. in its

  784. arrogant

  785. sophistication

  786. has demoted

  787. Jesus

  788. to the ranks

  789. of myth

  790. and lies,

  791. just as

  792. Belshazzar

  793. had demoted

  794. Daniel

  795. to a nobody

  796. and a nothing.

  797. God's not

  798. worth listening

  799. to anymore.

  800. We don't

  801. want this

  802. God talk

  803. around here.

  804. We don't

  805. want you

  806. talking about

  807. God in

  808. your school

  809. or in

  810. your college.

  811. Keep your

  812. religion to

  813. yourself.

  814. You've come

  815. here to

  816. work.

  817. Don't bring

  818. religion into

  819. the conversation.

  820. What's he

  821. got to do

  822. with it?

  823. Jesus.

  824. But let's

  825. give Jesus

  826. the last

  827. word on

  828. this.

  829. As Jesus

  830. faced his

  831. own trial

  832. before Pilate,

  833. another king,

  834. listen to

  835. what Jesus

  836. had to say

  837. in John

    John 18:37

  838. 18

  839. verse 37.

  840. This is

  841. Pilate

  842. speaking to

  843. Jesus.

  844. He says,

  845. you are

  846. a king

  847. then,

  848. said Pilate.

  849. Jesus

  850. answered,

  851. you are

  852. right in

  853. saying I

  854. am a

  855. king.

  856. In

  857. fact,

  858. for this

  859. reason I

  860. was born

  861. and for

  862. this I

  863. came into

  864. the world

  865. to testify

  866. to the

  867. truth.

  868. Everyone

  869. on the

  870. side of

  871. truth

  872. listens

  873. to me.

  874. Everyone

  875. on the

  876. side of

  877. truth

  878. listens

  879. to

  880. Jesus.

  881. Jesus

  882. is God's

  883. king.

  884. He is

  885. God's

  886. voice.

  887. Do not

  888. close your

  889. ear to

  890. what he

  891. has to

  892. say.

  893. Listen

  894. to him.

  895. So God

  896. has spoken.

  897. Listen

  898. up.

  899. God,

  900. thirdly,

  901. will judge.

  902. Be

  903. humble.

  904. the sad

  905. reality

  906. is

  907. because

  908. Belshazzar

  909. had

  910. silenced

  911. Daniel

  912. and

  913. pushed

  914. him

  915. away,

  916. he's

  917. actually

  918. removed

  919. God's

  920. voice

  921. from

  922. his

  923. ears.

  924. The

  925. very

  926. word

  927. that

  928. could

  929. save

  930. Belshazzar's

  931. life,

  932. he's

  933. rejected

  934. it.

  935. So all

  936. that is

  937. left for

  938. Belshazzar

  939. to hear

  940. and listen

  941. to is

  942. a word

  943. of

  944. judgment.

  945. There are

  946. four things

  947. we need

  948. to listen

  949. to if

  950. we want

  951. to avoid

  952. the same

  953. fate.

  954. I haven't

  955. got them,

  956. so listen

  957. up.

  958. Here we

  959. go.

  960. Know

  961. your place

  962. before

  963. God.

  964. Know

  965. your place

  966. before

  967. God.

  968. Verse

  969. 18.

  970. This is

  971. Daniel

  972. speaking to

  973. Belshazzar.

  974. O

  975. King,

  976. the

  977. Most

  978. High

  979. God

  980. gave

  981. your

  982. father

  983. Nebuchadnezzar

  984. sovereignty

  985. and greatness

  986. and glory

  987. and splendor.

  988. Because

  989. of the

  990. high

  991. position

  992. God

  993. gave

  994. him,

  995. all

  996. the

  997. peoples

  998. and

  999. nations

  1000. and men

  1001. of every

  1002. language

  1003. dreaded

  1004. and feared

  1005. him.

  1006. Did

  1007. you see

  1008. what it

  1009. says

  1010. there?

  1011. God

  1012. gave

  1013. Nebuchadnezzar

  1014. his position

  1015. and power

  1016. and God

  1017. could take

  1018. it from

  1019. him

  1020. as he

  1021. pleased.

  1022. And it's

  1023. no different

  1024. for us

  1025. in our

  1026. lives.

  1027. All that

  1028. we have,

  1029. our work,

  1030. our families,

  1031. our joys,

  1032. our pleasures,

  1033. everything we

  1034. love and

  1035. enjoy comes

  1036. from God

  1037. who's given

  1038. it to us.

  1039. In fact,

  1040. look at the

  1041. end of

  1042. verse 23.

  1043. This is

  1044. the God

  1045. who holds

  1046. in his

  1047. hand

  1048. our life

  1049. and all

  1050. our ways.

  1051. From the

  1052. moment we

  1053. are born

  1054. to the

  1055. second we

  1056. die,

  1057. everything

  1058. in our

  1059. life is

  1060. ruled and

  1061. controlled by

  1062. God.

  1063. So lesson

  1064. number one,

  1065. know your

  1066. place before

  1067. God.

  1068. Lesson

  1069. two,

  1070. be careful

  1071. of arrogant

  1072. pride.

  1073. Be careful

  1074. of arrogant

  1075. pride.

  1076. King

  1077. Nebuchadnezzar

  1078. had become

  1079. proud of

  1080. his position.

  1081. Look at

  1082. verse 20.

  1083. But when

  1084. his heart

  1085. became arrogant

  1086. and hardened

  1087. with pride,

  1088. he was

  1089. disposed

  1090. from his

  1091. royal throne

  1092. and stripped

  1093. of his

  1094. glory.

  1095. He was

  1096. driven away

  1097. from people

  1098. and given

  1099. the mind

  1100. of an

  1101. animal.

  1102. The point

  1103. is simple.

  1104. God

  1105. will humble

  1106. the arrogant

  1107. God.

  1108. And he

  1109. will humble

  1110. us

  1111. unless we

  1112. acknowledge

  1113. that he

  1114. is the

  1115. most high

  1116. God,

  1117. the one

  1118. who rules

  1119. over our

  1120. life,

  1121. who rules

  1122. over every

  1123. king and

  1124. over every

  1125. nation.

  1126. Remember the

  1127. testimony of

  1128. King Nebuchadnezzar?

  1129. The first

  1130. verse in our

  1131. reading this

  1132. morning

  1133. comes at the

  1134. end of chapter

  1135. 4 verse

  1136. 37.

  1137. And those

  1138. who walk

  1139. in pride

  1140. he is able

  1141. to humble.

  1142. So,

  1143. number two,

  1144. be careful

  1145. of arrogant

  1146. pride.

  1147. Number three,

  1148. learn humility

  1149. before it's

  1150. too late.

  1151. Learn humility

  1152. before it's

  1153. too late.

  1154. Here's the

  1155. tragedy of

  1156. this story.

  1157. Verse 22.

  1158. This is a

  1159. great tragedy.

  1160. Verse 22.

  1161. But you,

  1162. his son,

  1163. O Belshazzar,

  1164. have not

  1165. humbled

  1166. yourself,

  1167. though you

  1168. knew all

  1169. of this.

  1170. Though you

  1171. knew all

  1172. of this.

  1173. Belshazzar

  1174. was not

  1175. without excuse.

  1176. He knew

  1177. all about

  1178. Nebuchadnezzar.

  1179. He had

  1180. heard how

  1181. God had

  1182. humbled him

  1183. and how

  1184. God had

  1185. restored him.

  1186. He had

  1187. heard the

  1188. stories of

  1189. what God

  1190. had done.

  1191. He knew

  1192. all of

  1193. this.

  1194. But,

  1195. verse 23,

  1196. instead you

  1197. have set

  1198. yourself up

  1199. against the

  1200. Lord of

  1201. heaven.

  1202. You had

  1203. the goblets

  1204. from the

  1205. temple brought

  1206. to you,

  1207. and you

  1208. and your

  1209. nobles,

  1210. your wives,

  1211. and your

  1212. concubines

  1213. drank wine

  1214. from them.

  1215. you praised

  1216. the gods

  1217. of silver,

  1218. of gold,

  1219. of bronze,

  1220. iron,

  1221. wood,

  1222. and stone,

  1223. which cannot

  1224. see or

  1225. hear or

  1226. understand.

  1227. But you

  1228. did not

  1229. honour the

  1230. God who

  1231. holds in

  1232. his hand

  1233. your life

  1234. and all

  1235. your ways.

  1236. God is

  1237. so gracious

  1238. to us.

  1239. The very

  1240. fact that

  1241. we are

  1242. here this

  1243. morning means

  1244. that we

  1245. have heard

  1246. the voice

  1247. of God

  1248. through his

  1249. word and

  1250. none of us

  1251. here today

  1252. are without

  1253. excuse.

  1254. Do not

  1255. refuse to

  1256. be humble

  1257. or honour

  1258. God.

  1259. Learn

  1260. humility

  1261. before it

  1262. is too

  1263. late.

  1264. And then

  1265. last,

  1266. we will

  1267. all stand

  1268. before God

  1269. as judge.

  1270. We will

  1271. all stand

  1272. before God

  1273. as judge.

  1274. Belshazzar's

  1275. fate,

  1276. well it was

  1277. revealed to

  1278. him in the

  1279. writing on

  1280. the wall,

  1281. verse 25.

  1282. This is the

  1283. inscription that

  1284. was written.

  1285. Meenie,

  1286. meenie,

  1287. tekel,

  1288. parson.

  1289. This is

  1290. what the

  1291. words mean.

  1292. God has

  1293. numbered the

  1294. days of

  1295. your reign

  1296. and brought

  1297. it to an

  1298. end.

  1299. You have

  1300. been weighed

  1301. on the

  1302. scales and

  1303. found wanting.

  1304. Your kingdom

  1305. is divided

  1306. and given

  1307. to the

  1308. Medes

  1309. and Persians.

  1310. And then

  1311. it seems

  1312. as if

  1313. Belshazzar

  1314. has made

  1315. some last

  1316. desperate

  1317. attempt to

  1318. gain approval

  1319. with Daniel

  1320. and some

  1321. kind of

  1322. acceptance

  1323. with God.

  1324. This is

  1325. desperate,

  1326. desperate

  1327. measures.

  1328. Verse 29.

  1329. Then at

  1330. Belshazzar's

  1331. command,

  1332. Daniel was

  1333. clothed in

  1334. purple,

  1335. a gold

  1336. chain was

  1337. placed around

  1338. his neck,

  1339. and he was

  1340. proclaimed the

  1341. third highest

  1342. ruler in the

  1343. kingdom.

  1344. Maybe in

  1345. his thinking,

  1346. if I do

  1347. this for

  1348. Daniel,

  1349. maybe this

  1350. isn't going

  1351. to happen

  1352. to me.

  1353. But it's

  1354. too late.

  1355. It's

  1356. too

  1357. late.

  1358. God's

  1359. judgment

  1360. has

  1361. already

  1362. been

  1363. spoken.

  1364. His

  1365. word

  1366. can't

  1367. be

  1368. reversed.

  1369. Verse 30.

  1370. That

  1371. very

  1372. night,

  1373. that

  1374. very

  1375. night,

  1376. Belshazzar,

  1377. king of the

  1378. Babylonians,

  1379. was slain

  1380. and Darius

  1381. the Mede

  1382. took over

  1383. the kingdom

  1384. at the

  1385. age of

  1386. 62.

  1387. The

  1388. Babylonian

  1389. empire

  1390. was wiped

  1391. away,

  1392. never to be

  1393. back again.

  1394. in power.

  1395. One

  1396. moment,

  1397. drinking and

  1398. dancing.

  1399. A few

  1400. hours later,

  1401. defeated

  1402. and dead.

  1403. A king

  1404. and his

  1405. kingdom

  1406. came crashing

  1407. down.

  1408. You know

  1409. what, as we

  1410. finish,

  1411. we're all

  1412. going to

  1413. face God's

  1414. judgment one

  1415. day.

  1416. Every one

  1417. of us here,

  1418. myself

  1419. included.

  1420. And we

  1421. will have

  1422. to give

  1423. an account

  1424. for our

  1425. life.

  1426. But you

  1427. know what?

  1428. We can

  1429. do it

  1430. with absolute

  1431. confidence

  1432. and assurance.

  1433. Flick with

  1434. me, if you

  1435. like, to

  1436. Hebrews

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  1437. chapter 9.

  1438. These are the

  1439. words we

  1440. started with

  1441. at the very

  1442. beginning this

  1443. morning.

  1444. Hebrews

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  1445. chapter 9.

  1446. 9.

  1447. What's the

  1448. page number?

  1449. 1206.

  1450. 1206.

  1451. Hebrews

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  1452. chapter 9.

  1453. Verse 27.

  1454. Read these

  1455. words with

  1456. me.

  1457. Just follow

  1458. along.

  1459. Hebrews 9

    Hebrews 9:27

  1460. verse 27.

  1461. Just as

  1462. man is

  1463. destined to

  1464. die once

  1465. and after

  1466. that to

  1467. face the

  1468. judgment.

  1469. That's the

  1470. reality.

  1471. It will

  1472. all happen

  1473. one day.

  1474. What are we

  1475. going to say?

  1476. What will be

  1477. our answer?

  1478. But here's the

  1479. confidence that

  1480. comes in verse

  1481. 28.

  1482. Just as we

  1483. die once,

  1484. so Christ

  1485. was sacrificed

  1486. once to

  1487. take away the

  1488. sins of

  1489. many people,

  1490. people like

  1491. you and

  1492. me.

  1493. And he

  1494. will appear

  1495. a second

  1496. time, not

  1497. to bear

  1498. sin, but

  1499. to bring

  1500. salvation to

  1501. those who

  1502. are waiting

  1503. for him or

  1504. those who

  1505. are trusting

  1506. in him.

  1507. One day

  1508. the party

  1509. of our

  1510. life is

  1511. going to

  1512. be interrupted

  1513. just as

  1514. abruptly as

  1515. it was for

  1516. Belshazzar.

  1517. One day

  1518. our life

  1519. will come

  1520. to a

  1521. close.

  1522. We will

  1523. breathe our

  1524. last.

  1525. The days

  1526. of our

  1527. life will

  1528. end.

  1529. We will

  1530. stand before

  1531. God.

  1532. We will

  1533. be weighed

  1534. on the

  1535. scales of

  1536. justice.

  1537. But don't

  1538. leave it

  1539. till it's

  1540. too late.

  1541. God is

  1542. graciously

  1543. patient,

  1544. longing and

  1545. waiting for

  1546. all to turn

  1547. to him.

  1548. If on the

  1549. other hand

  1550. you are

  1551. trusting and

  1552. you are

  1553. assured of

  1554. meeting God

  1555. and you're

  1556. looking forward

  1557. to his

  1558. salvation to

  1559. come,

  1560. don't leave

  1561. it till

  1562. it's too

  1563. late

  1564. before you

  1565. share this

  1566. message with

  1567. those who

  1568. are walking

  1569. in pride

  1570. today and

  1571. do not

  1572. know of the

  1573. salvation that

  1574. is to be

  1575. found in

  1576. Christ.

  1577. Do not

  1578. leave it

  1579. till it is

  1580. too late

  1581. with your

  1582. colleagues at

  1583. work,

  1584. your friends,

  1585. your family.

  1586. The writing

  1587. is on the

  1588. wall.

  1589. Do not

  1590. ignore what

  1591. God has

  1592. said.

  1593. Let's

  1594. pray.

  1595. Let's

  1596. pray.

  1597. Let's

  1598. pray.

  1599. Let's

  1600. pray.

  1601. Let's

  1602. pray.

  1603. Let's

  1604. pray.

  1605. Let's

  1606. pray.

  1607. Our Father

  1608. God, we

  1609. thank you

  1610. that you

  1611. are a

  1612. living God.

  1613. We thank

  1614. you that

  1615. you are a

  1616. speaking God.

  1617. We thank

  1618. you that you

  1619. are a

  1620. judging God.

  1621. Thank you

  1622. that in your

  1623. judgments you

  1624. will put

  1625. everything right.

  1626. And we

  1627. thank you

  1628. that because

  1629. of Jesus

  1630. we can

  1631. stand before

  1632. you with

  1633. confidence,

  1634. assurance,

  1635. unashamed

  1636. because Christ

  1637. has forgiven

  1638. us.

  1639. Please help

  1640. us to

  1641. walk humbly

  1642. before you.

  1643. Help us to

  1644. do that well

  1645. this week

  1646. as we seek

  1647. to share

  1648. the good

  1649. news of

  1650. Christ

  1651. with others.

  1652. we ask

  1653. for your

  1654. help to

  1655. do this.

  1656. In

  1657. Jesus'

  1658. name.

  1659. Amen.

  1660. Amen.
