  1. Daniel chapter 6 and we'll read the whole chapter.

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  2. It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, with three administrators

  3. over them, one of whom was Daniel.

  4. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss.

  5. Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional

  6. qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

  7. At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against

  8. Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so.

  9. They could find no corruption in him because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor

  10. negligent.

  11. Finally, these men said, we will never find any basis for charges against this man, Daniel,

  12. unless it has something to do with the law of his God.

  13. So the administrators and the satraps went as a group to the king and said, O King Darius,

  14. live forever.

  15. The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisors and governors have all agreed that

  16. the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god

  17. or man during the next thirty days except to you, O King, shall be thrown into the lion's

  18. den.

  19. Now, O King, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered in accordance

  20. with the laws of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be repelled.

  21. So King Darius put the decree in writing.

  22. Now, when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs

  23. room where the windows opened towards Jerusalem.

  24. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God just as

  25. he had done before.

  26. Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.

  27. So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree.

  28. Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god

  29. or man except to you, O King, would be thrown into the lion's den?

  30. The king answered, The decree stands in accordance with the laws of the Medes and Persians, which

  31. cannot be repealed.

  32. Then they said to the king, Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention

  33. to you, O King, or to the decree you put in writing.

  34. He still prays three times a day.

  35. When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed.

  36. He was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.

  37. Then the men went as a group to the king and said to him, Remember, O King, that according

  38. to the law of the Medes and Persians, no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.

  39. So the king gave the order and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lion's den.

  40. The king said to Daniel, May your God, who you serve continually, rescue you.

  41. A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his

  42. own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles so that Daniel's situation might not be changed.

  43. Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment

  44. being brought to him, and he could not sleep.

  45. At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lion's den.

  46. When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, Daniel, servant of the

  47. living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?

  48. Daniel answered, O King, live forever.

  49. My God sent his angel and he shut the mouths of the lions.

  50. They have not hurt me because I was found innocent in his sight, nor have I ever done any wrong

  51. before you, O King.

  52. The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den.

  53. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found in him because he had trusted

  54. in his God.

  55. At the king's command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into

  56. the lion's den along with their wives and children.

  57. And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their

  58. bones.

  59. Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and men of every language throughout

  60. the land.

  61. May you prosper greatly.

  62. Issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom, people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel.

  63. For he is the living God and he endures forever.

  64. His kingdom will not be destroyed.

  65. His dominion will never end.

  66. He rescues and he saves.

  67. He performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth.

  68. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.

  69. So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

  70. Thanks very much, Connor.

  71. It's a long reading, but great to have it read.

  72. Thank you for that.

  73. Well, let's keep our Bibles open at Daniel 6 and we'll see what we can learn from it this

  74. morning.

  75. We're going to pray and ask for God's help to us all.

  76. So let's just pray right now.

  77. Amen.

  78. For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but

  79. also to suffer for him.

  80. Father, as we look at this true story of Daniel, we pray that you will teach us something of

  81. your amazing salvation, the way in which you rescue.

  82. But also would you teach us today about how we should live when we face suffering because

  83. we love you and follow you.

  84. teach us this morning to live like Daniel lived and that our eyes would be fixed firmly on

  85. Jesus, the one who did suffer for us so that we could have life.

  86. So by your Holy Spirit, teach us.

  87. Speak into our hearts.

  88. And we ask this in Jesus' name.

  89. Amen.

  90. Well, life seems to be on the up for Daniel.

  91. There's a new power in place.

  92. Look at chapter 5, verse 30, the last verse of chapter 5.

  93. That very night, Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain and Darius the Mede took over the

  94. kingdom at the age of 62.

  95. So there's a new power in place.

  96. And with that has come a new position for Daniel in verse 1 of chapter 6.

  97. It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the entire kingdom with three administrators

  98. over them, one of whom was Daniel.

  99. So a very high position and no doubt with a good salary too.

  100. But not only has he got a new position, there's also the possibility of promotion, verse 3.

  101. Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities

  102. that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

  103. So life seems to be on the up for Daniel.

  104. He's climbing the promotional ladder.

  105. But in reality, nothing has actually changed because Daniel is still living in Babylon.

  106. Babylon was the capital city, a place where rulers stood in opposition to God and where

  107. persecution was a reality for God's people.

  108. In fact, so fierce was the opposition that the name Babylon throughout the Bible and into

  109. the New Testament symbolises a place of exile and suffering for God's people.

  110. So the first letter of Peter in the New Testament, he's writing there to Christians who've been

  111. persecuted and he signs off that letter by talking about the church, those who are in Babylon.

  112. It's kind of like a symbol, a sign for those who are facing struggles and suffering.

  113. And so it is today.

  114. Christians everywhere live in their own Babylon.

  115. Some face discrimination, harassment and violence because of their beliefs.

  116. Others experience various levels of contempt, rejection and hostility.

  117. And even for us today, where we live and where we work and the colleges that we study in,

  118. there is pressure to water down or abandon Jesus Christ altogether.

  119. We all live in our own little Babylon.

  120. How do we live in it?

  121. How do we face it?

  122. Well, there's four things that we're going to learn this morning from Daniel,

  123. who helps us to live life in our own little Babylon.

  124. First is this.

  125. God promises us that we will face opposition.

  126. If you are a Christian, you will face opposition.

  127. Daniel was a follower of God.

  128. He quickly gained recognition.

  129. He was offered promotion.

  130. But with it came opposition.

  131. Look at verse four.

  132. At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel

  133. in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so.

  134. Here we have a normal follower of God getting on with living for God where he's been placed.

  135. He's not corrupt.

  136. He's not dodging tax.

  137. He's not making false expenses.

  138. He's a trustworthy character, never lying and never sneaking off work early.

  139. He's a man of integrity.

  140. Look at the rest of verse four.

  141. They could find no corruption in him because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.

  142. But faithful living is always going to be met by opposition.

  143. If people can't find flaws in your character, they are going to find problems with your faith.

  144. So look at verse five.

  145. Finally, these men said, after trolling through and trying to find some kind of misconduct with him,

  146. finally they said, we'll never find any basis of charges against this man, Daniel,

  147. unless it has something to do with the law of his God,

  148. unless it's got something to do with his faith, the things that he believes in.

  149. Everybody knew that Daniel was a follower of God.

  150. That was obvious.

  151. He didn't just walk the walk.

  152. He talked the talk.

  153. People in the office knew that he didn't gossip about other people.

  154. He knew that he was a fair and honest kind of guy.

  155. And in his places of management and authority, well, he treated people fairly and kindly.

  156. He was the kind of boss you wanted to work under.

  157. But he was at the same time just an ordinary Christian,

  158. getting on with life, living for God where he worked,

  159. similar to where many of you are or where you study,

  160. being a Christian and getting on with where you work.

  161. But people can't always tolerate this kind of living out and public faith.

  162. Your faith is fine if you leave it compartmentalised or leave it at home.

  163. But once you bring it into the public sphere, then we've got problems.

  164. And so his work colleagues decided to go to the boss about it all.

  165. Verse 7.

  166. They got him right at the heart of where it was going to hurt Daniel.

  167. He only prayed to God.

  168. How could he pray to anyone else?

  169. They got him.

  170. This was going to get rid of Daniel.

  171. Of course, what happened to Daniel is what happens to all God's people.

  172. Christians should never, ever be surprised at opposition.

  173. Jesus himself warned us of the cost involved if we're to follow him.

  174. Let me read to you from John's Gospel, chapter 15.

  175. This is what Jesus said to his disciples.

  176. He said,

  177. If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.

  178. Remember the words I spoke to you?

  179. If they persecuted me, says Jesus, they will persecute you also.

  180. Opposition is promised.

  181. We can't avoid it.

  182. And we can't escape it.

  183. Do you know every year, over 2,000 Christians across the world are killed for their faith

  184. because of their public witness for Christ.

  185. That doesn't include the 50,000 believers who remain in North Korea's labour camps today.

  186. Or the hundreds of believers in Syria who are trying to escape the violence of ISIS.

  187. The reality is, 200 million Christians, not just cultural Christians, but those who have dedicated their life to Christ,

  188. 200 million face discrimination, harassment, prison, exclusion from health care, extreme poverty,

  189. every single day, simply because they have made their loyalty and love for God known to other people.

  190. That's the reality for the vast majority of those who follow Christ.

  191. Now we live in a different kind of country.

  192. We're maybe not going to face the same kind of opposition when you go to college or work tomorrow morning.

  193. But don't be surprised if you get overlooked in promotion or a new post because you're not going to twist the truth a little bit.

  194. Don't be surprised if people think you're weird because you've made the decision not to play sport or play a match on a Sunday

  195. and instead go to church.

  196. Don't be surprised if you feel left out of the crowd at college because you don't drink copious amounts or sleep with your boyfriend or girlfriend.

  197. And don't be surprised if you're disliked because of your views on abortion or same-sex marriage.

  198. Opposition is promised.

  199. People will not always like you or agree with you.

  200. We can't escape it.

  201. And we can't avoid it.

  202. So God promises us that we will face opposition.

  203. Second, God calls us to be faithful in opposition.

  204. He calls us to be faithful.

  205. Look at how Daniel responds to the opposition, verse 10.

  206. Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published,

  207. He went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened towards Jerusalem.

  208. Now why would he do that?

  209. It seems a bit strange.

  210. What's so special about Jerusalem and kind of praying towards Jerusalem?

  211. Well, you can have a flick back to 1 Kings chapter 8 if you want.

    1 Kings 8 chapter mention

  212. If not, just listen.

  213. 1 Kings chapter 8, verse 48.

    1 Kings 8:48

  214. Here it's foretelling that God's people were going to end up in exile.

  215. So this is before the exile has happened, before Daniel has been carted off to a new place.

  216. And how and what they should do when they find themselves in opposition.

  217. And we read in verse 48 of 1 Kings chapter 8.

    1 Kings 8 chapter mention

  218. If they, if that's God's people, turn back to you with all their hearts and soul,

  219. in the land of their enemies who took them captive,

  220. and pray to you towards the land you gave their fathers,

  221. towards the city, that's Jerusalem,

  222. you have chosen and the temple I have built for your name,

  223. then from heaven, your dwelling place,

  224. hear their prayer and their plea,

  225. and uphold their cause.

  226. You see, Daniel was doing what every faithful follower of God was commanded to do,

  227. and that was to pray.

  228. He knew God's word.

  229. He knew what 1 Kings had said.

  230. That when they were in the troubled times and in the difficult times,

  231. they were to turn to God.

  232. And this physical act of turning to Jerusalem

  233. was not some sort of religious act that made his prayers more powerful.

  234. No, the physical act of looking towards Jerusalem,

  235. which was a symbol of God's presence and power,

  236. reflected his complete dependence on God.

  237. With his eyes, physical eyes, he was looking towards the city.

  238. But it demonstrated of where his own heart was looking towards.

  239. It was looking towards God.

  240. His trust was in God.

  241. And so his prayer for the people and for himself

  242. was that God would come and help them to keep trusting God,

  243. that they wouldn't turn away from God,

  244. that they would remain faithful and strong in the opposition.

  245. Now, Daniel's prayer was not some sort of panic prayer.

  246. We know what panic prayers are like

  247. when we get ourselves into trouble and in some kind of difficulty.

  248. We suddenly shoot off an arrow prayer towards God.

  249. That's not how it was with Daniel.

  250. Look at the rest of verse 10.

  251. Chapter 6, it says,

  252. He had a discipline of prayer.

  253. His faith was a day-to-day experience.

  254. He lived it out every single day.

  255. So when the opposition did come,

  256. when trouble did come,

  257. he kept on doing what he had always done before,

  258. what was always his practice.

  259. He had a relationship with God.

  260. And so that relationship continued.

  261. And I think there's a challenge for us here.

  262. If we don't have a living faith with God when things are easy,

  263. then we're not going to have a living faith when things get tough.

  264. The point is,

  265. we don't turn to God when opposition comes.

  266. When opposition comes,

  267. we run away from God

  268. if we don't have a strong, vibrant relationship with him.

  269. That's what happens.

  270. When the opposition comes,

  271. people turn away.

  272. That is, unless

  273. we have a good relationship

  274. with our Father in Heaven.

  275. Not surprisingly,

  276. Daniel's faithfulness to God

  277. has been found out.

  278. Verse 13.

  279. They've seen him

  280. and they report it to the king.

  281. Verse 13.

  282. They said to the king,

  283. Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah,

  284. pays no attention to you, O king,

  285. or to the decree you put in writing.

  286. He still prays three times a day.

  287. When the king heard this,

  288. he was greatly distressed.

  289. And he was determined to rescue Daniel

  290. and made every effort until sundown to save him.

  291. We could imagine the pressure that Daniel was facing.

  292. The king was, to some extent, on his side.

  293. Look, Daniel,

  294. if you just stop praying,

  295. maybe there's something I can do for you here.

  296. Daniel, just promise that you won't pray again

  297. and you'll get that promotion

  298. that I talked to you about.

  299. Daniel, if you just leave God out of the picture,

  300. it's only for 30 days.

  301. Just park God to one side,

  302. get on with your life,

  303. keep your head down,

  304. keep quiet,

  305. don't worry about your faith,

  306. and your life will be saved.

  307. Isn't that the pressure we face?

  308. Just do what everybody else does

  309. and you'll be liked.

  310. Forget your views on sexuality for the interview,

  311. you'll get the job.

  312. Just leave God at home

  313. and you'll find that life is really okay.

  314. Just keep silent about your faith.

  315. Don't bring it into your conversation.

  316. If you want an easy way,

  317. if you want to get on with everybody,

  318. don't say anything.

  319. It's only going to upset them.

  320. Keep it quiet.

  321. Daniel had a living faith.

  322. It was a day-to-day experience

  323. that just flowed naturally from his life.

  324. And so when the pressure of opposition came,

  325. he was faithful.

  326. It was his usual practice.

  327. As it says at the end of verse 10,

  328. he did it just as he had done before.

  329. So God calls his people

  330. to be faithful

  331. when opposition and struggles come.

  332. But third,

  333. God will rescue his people

  334. in opposition.

  335. God will rescue his people

  336. in opposition.

  337. Daniel's defiance,

  338. his loyalty,

  339. and his love towards God

  340. means only one thing.

  341. Breakfast

  342. for the lions.

  343. Verse 16.

  344. So the king gave the order

  345. and they brought Daniel

  346. and threw him into the lion's den.

  347. Verse 17.

  348. A stone was brought

  349. and placed over the mouth of the den

  350. and the king sealed it

  351. with his own signet ring

  352. and with the rings of his nobles

  353. so that Daniel's situation

  354. might not be changed.

  355. It seems like it's lights out

  356. for Daniel, doesn't it?

  357. No one ever walked out

  358. of the lion's den.

  359. But something

  360. of Daniel's witness

  361. has rubbed off

  362. on this pagan king.

  363. He's watched Daniel,

  364. he's listened to Daniel,

  365. and something

  366. he's got a hold of.

  367. Do you see what the king

  368. said to Daniel

  369. just before he threw him

  370. into the lions?

  371. It comes at the end

  372. of verse 16.

  373. The king said to Daniel,

  374. may your God

  375. whom you serve

  376. continually

  377. rescue you.

  378. Now I don't think

  379. this was a

  380. condescending

  381. kind of

  382. good luck wish

  383. to Daniel.

  384. Kind of you're off

  385. to the lions now.

  386. What's your God

  387. going to do about it?

  388. No, this is

  389. I think

  390. a statement of faith

  391. on behalf

  392. of the king.

  393. A pagan king

  394. has come to realize

  395. that God

  396. is able

  397. to save.

  398. May your God

  399. whom you serve

  400. continually

  401. rescue you.

  402. And it's actually

  403. proved to us

  404. in verse 19.

  405. Look at verse 19.

  406. At the first

  407. light of dawn

  408. the king

  409. got up

  410. and hurried

  411. to the lion's den.

  412. Why would he do that?

  413. When he came

  414. near the den

  415. he called to Daniel

  416. in an anguished voice

  417. Daniel

  418. servant of the living God

  419. has your God

  420. whom you serve

  421. continually

  422. been able

  423. to rescue you

  424. from the lions?

  425. Now nobody

  426. goes to the lion's den

  427. expecting

  428. the lion's breakfast

  429. to come walking out.

  430. You just don't

  431. do that.

  432. That is

  433. unless you believe

  434. in God's power

  435. to be able

  436. to rescue

  437. and that's

  438. what Darius

  439. has got a hold of.

  440. He knows

  441. that Daniel's

  442. God can rescue

  443. and he goes

  444. with this

  445. expectation

  446. that he's

  447. going to be

  448. alive.

  449. Verse 21

  450. Daniel answered

  451. O king

  452. live forever

  453. my God

  454. sent his

  455. angel

  456. and he

  457. shut the

  458. mouths

  459. of the lions

  460. they have

  461. not hurt

  462. me

  463. because I

  464. was found

  465. innocent

  466. in his sight

  467. nor have

  468. I done

  469. any wrong

  470. before you

  471. O king.

  472. An amazing

  473. story

  474. of God

  475. delivering

  476. and rescuing

  477. one of his

  478. servants

  479. just like

  480. he had

  481. rescued

  482. his three

  483. friends

  484. from the

  485. fiery

  486. furnace.

  487. Now here's

  488. a question

  489. and I'm

  490. sure it's

  491. all in our

  492. minds here.

  493. If God

  494. is able

  495. to rescue

  496. his people

  497. like Daniel

  498. why is it

  499. that so many

  500. Christians

  501. lose their

  502. life

  503. or end up

  504. suffering

  505. in labour

  506. camps

  507. or facing

  508. prison

  509. today?

  510. Why doesn't

  511. God rescue

  512. them?

  513. Has God

  514. failed?

  515. Has God

  516. not got the

  517. power to do

  518. it?

  519. Did Daniel

  520. have more

  521. faith than

  522. everybody else?

  523. Do we need

  524. more faith?

  525. Is that the

  526. reason?

  527. No I don't

  528. think it

  529. is.

  530. I think

  531. God promises

  532. us that

  533. he will

  534. rescue us

  535. in life

  536. or he

  537. will rescue

  538. us through

  539. death.

  540. He will

  541. rescue us

  542. in life

  543. or through

  544. death.

  545. Have a look

  546. please.

  547. Keep your

  548. finger in

  549. Daniel 6

  550. and go to

  551. Hebrews.

  552. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  553. chapter 11.

  554. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  555. chapter 11

  556. is a great

  557. chapter all

  558. about God's

  559. people throughout

  560. history,

  561. throughout time

  562. who had

  563. faith,

  564. who trusted

  565. in God.

  566. And towards

  567. the end of

  568. the chapter

  569. we get to

  570. meet some

  571. of those

  572. people.

  573. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  574. chapter 11

  575. starting at

  576. verse 32

  577. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11:32

  578. 11

  579. verse 32

  580. and what

  581. more shall

  582. I say?

  583. So he's been

  584. talking about

  585. all these

  586. great people

  587. in the past

  588. who trusted

  589. God.

  590. He says

  591. I do not

  592. have time

  593. to tell

  594. about

  595. Gideon,

  596. Barak,

  597. Samson,

  598. Japheth,

  599. David,

  600. Samuel and

  601. the prophets

  602. who through

  603. faith conquered

  604. kingdoms,

  605. administered

  606. justice and

  607. gained what

  608. it was promised,

  609. who shut

  610. the mouths

  611. of lions,

  612. quenched

  613. the fury

  614. of the

  615. flames,

  616. and escaped

  617. the edge

  618. of the

  619. sword,

  620. whose weakness

  621. was turned

  622. to strength,

  623. and who

  624. became powerful

  625. in battle

  626. and routed

  627. foreign armies.

  628. women even

  629. received back

  630. their dead,

  631. raised to

  632. life again.

  633. God is

  634. able to

  635. save his

  636. people in

  637. the most

  638. remarkable

  639. and the

  640. most amazing

  641. of ways.

  642. He has

  643. done it

  644. and he

  645. can do it.

  646. Whether it's

  647. the fiery

  648. furnace or

  649. whether it's

  650. the lion's

  651. den,

  652. God can

  653. deliver his

  654. people.

  655. He even

  656. brought people

  657. back from

  658. the dead.

  659. But he

  660. doesn't

  661. always

  662. rescue

  663. in

  664. life.

  665. It's

  666. not always

  667. going to

  668. be

  669. victorious

  670. for every

  671. single

  672. person.

  673. Because

  674. look at

  675. the rest

  676. of those

  677. verses.

  678. God

  679. also

  680. rescues

  681. through

  682. death.

  683. Look at

  684. the rest

  685. of verse

  686. 35.

  687. Well,

  688. let's

  689. read from

  690. verse 35.

  691. Women

  692. receive back

  693. their dead,

  694. raised to

  695. life again.

  696. others

  697. were

  698. tortured

  699. and refused

  700. to be

  701. released so

  702. that they

  703. might gain

  704. a better

  705. resurrection.

  706. Some

  707. faced

  708. jeers and

  709. flogging,

  710. while still

  711. others were

  712. chained and

  713. put in

  714. prison.

  715. They were

  716. stoned.

  717. They were

  718. sawn in

  719. two.

  720. They were

  721. put to

  722. death by

  723. the sword.

  724. They went

  725. about in

  726. sheepskins and

  727. goatskins,

  728. destitute,

  729. persecuted,

  730. and ill

  731. treated.

  732. The world

  733. was not

  734. worthy of

  735. them.

  736. They

  737. wandered in

  738. deserts and

  739. mountains and

  740. in caves and

  741. holes in the

  742. grounds.

  743. You see,

  744. some, if not

  745. most, faced

  746. a violent and

  747. brutal death,

  748. terrible

  749. persecution.

  750. They were

  751. rescued not

  752. in life,

  753. but they were

  754. rescued through

  755. death.

  756. How can we

  757. say that?

  758. Well, look at

  759. the end of

  760. verse 35 again.

  761. others were

  762. tortured and

  763. were refused to

  764. be released so

  765. that they might

  766. gain a better

  767. resurrection.

  768. They knew that

  769. something better

  770. and greater

  771. awaited them

  772. beyond the

  773. grave.

  774. They knew if

  775. they were to

  776. lose their

  777. life, they

  778. weren't losing

  779. out.

  780. They were

  781. gaining something

  782. far better.

  783. We're told what

  784. that is, actually,

  785. in chapter 11,

  786. verse 16.

  787. Just look back

  788. a few verses.

  789. It's what all

  790. these people were

  791. looking forward

  792. to.

  793. It says in

  794. 11, 16,

  795. Instead, they

  796. were longing for

  797. a better country,

  798. a heavenly

  799. one.

  800. Therefore, God

  801. is not ashamed

  802. to be called

  803. their God,

  804. for he has

  805. prepared a

  806. city for

  807. them.

  808. Those who

  809. had lost

  810. their life,

  811. God rescued

  812. them through

  813. death, and

  814. he brought

  815. them into an

  816. eternal city,

  817. to their

  818. eternal rest.

  819. The ultimate

  820. rescue for

  821. all of God's

  822. people is to

  823. go from this

  824. life into his

  825. eternal kingdom.

  826. Now, we as

  827. Christians have

  828. that same

  829. faith.

  830. It's not that

  831. our faith is

  832. better or

  833. greater.

  834. It's because our

  835. faith is in the

  836. Lord Jesus Christ,

  837. who has defeated

  838. death, and who

  839. has conquered the

  840. grave, and

  841. gives eternal

  842. life to all

  843. who trust in

  844. him.

  845. He will

  846. rescue us

  847. either in

  848. life or

  849. through death.

  850. And then

  851. last, God

  852. always works

  853. good from

  854. the opposition.

  855. God always

  856. works good from

  857. the opposition.

  858. It shouldn't

  859. surprise us to

  860. read the

  861. ending of

  862. this story.

  863. It shouldn't

  864. be a surprise,

  865. but it should

  866. amaze us.

  867. Look at

  868. verse 25.

  869. Then King

  870. Darius wrote

  871. to all the

  872. peoples,

  873. nations and

  874. men of

  875. every language

  876. throughout the

  877. land.

  878. May you

  879. prosper

  880. greatly.

  881. I issue

  882. a decree

  883. that in

  884. every part

  885. of my

  886. kingdom,

  887. people must

  888. fear and

  889. reverence the

  890. God of

  891. Daniel.

  892. For he

  893. is the

  894. living God.

  895. he endures

  896. forever.

  897. His kingdom

  898. will not be

  899. destroyed.

  900. His dominion

  901. will never

  902. end.

  903. He rescues

  904. and he

  905. saves.

  906. He performs

  907. signs and

  908. wonders in

  909. the heavens

  910. and on the

  911. earth.

  912. He has

  913. rescued

  914. Daniel from

  915. the power

  916. of the

  917. lions.

  918. It's an

  919. extraordinary

  920. turn of

  921. events.

  922. At the

  923. beginning of

  924. the story,

  925. the kingdom

  926. must pray

  927. to Daniel.

  928. By the time

  929. we get to

  930. the end of

  931. the story,

  932. all the

  933. kingdom has

  934. been charged

  935. to honour

  936. the eternal

  937. God who

  938. rescues and

  939. saves.

  940. If you've

  941. been following

  942. through Daniel,

  943. it's not

  944. going to

  945. surprise you

  946. because it's

  947. happened already.

  948. But it

  949. should not

  950. stop amazing

  951. us.

  952. What an

  953. amazing God.

  954. God always

  955. works good

  956. from opposition.

  957. He did it

  958. under

  959. Nebuchadnezzar.

  960. He did it

  961. under

  962. Belshazzar.

  963. He did it

  964. here under

  965. Darius.

  966. And most

  967. of all,

  968. he did it

  969. under a

  970. king called

  971. Pilate.

  972. Under

  973. Pilate,

  974. Jesus faced

  975. opposition and

  976. persecution.

  977. He was

  978. tortured and

  979. beaten.

  980. He faced

  981. the flogging

  982. and the

  983. jeers.

  984. He was

  985. put to

  986. death,

  987. crucified

  988. on the

  989. cross.

  990. But

  991. through it

  992. all,

  993. God,

  994. by his

  995. power,

  996. worked

  997. salvation

  998. for the

  999. world.

  1000. He

  1001. rescued

  1002. people,

  1003. not from

  1004. the

  1005. lion's

  1006. den,

  1007. but from

  1008. the

  1009. claws

  1010. of

  1011. Satan

  1012. so

  1013. that

  1014. we

  1015. might

  1016. have

  1017. life

  1018. in

  1019. all

  1020. its

  1021. fullness.

  1022. God

  1023. always

  1024. works

  1025. good

  1026. from

  1027. opposition.

  1028. And it

  1029. shouldn't

  1030. surprise us

  1031. that God

  1032. continues to

  1033. work like

  1034. this through

  1035. us and

  1036. through his

  1037. church in

  1038. the world.

  1039. Some of

  1040. you may

  1041. have listened

  1042. to this

  1043. interview I

  1044. sent out a

  1045. few weeks

  1046. ago about

  1047. a man named

  1048. Victor,

  1049. who is

  1050. living and

  1051. working in

  1052. Syria and

  1053. Iraq right

  1054. now.

  1055. He told

  1056. how believers

  1057. in Christ,

  1058. pastors and

  1059. their

  1060. congregations in

  1061. Mosul are

  1062. facing terrible

  1063. opposition and

  1064. persecution.

  1065. He met with

  1066. them as ISIS

  1067. were sweeping

  1068. through that

  1069. city.

  1070. Those

  1071. Christians and

  1072. the pastors

  1073. were removed

  1074. from their

  1075. homes.

  1076. Their money

  1077. was taken,

  1078. their belongings

  1079. were taken,

  1080. their medication

  1081. was taken.

  1082. A sign was

  1083. put up on

  1084. their houses

  1085. saying,

  1086. property of

  1087. ISIS, a

  1088. big end for

  1089. Nazarene, people

  1090. of followers of

  1091. Christ, were

  1092. put on their

  1093. house, don't

  1094. return here

  1095. again, left

  1096. with all that

  1097. they had on

  1098. their backs.

  1099. Others we

  1100. know have

  1101. lost their

  1102. life, some

  1103. brutally

  1104. beheaded because

  1105. they wouldn't

  1106. convert, because

  1107. they wouldn't

  1108. stop praying to

  1109. the God that

  1110. we've just been

  1111. reading about.

  1112. Where's God?

  1113. Well, through

  1114. it all, God is

  1115. working through

  1116. the opposition.

  1117. This man,

  1118. Victor, shared

  1119. how he was

  1120. able to share

  1121. the good news

  1122. of Christ with

  1123. those who had

  1124. to leave their

  1125. town.

  1126. And 50

  1127. people, he

  1128. said, became

  1129. followers of

  1130. Christ.

  1131. What was he

  1132. promising them?

  1133. He was

  1134. promising them

  1135. salvation in

  1136. Jesus Christ.

  1137. And on the

  1138. other hand, he

  1139. said, if you

  1140. follow him, you

  1141. will suffer.

  1142. But they knew

  1143. that in their

  1144. suffering, they

  1145. would gain eternal

  1146. life with him.

  1147. Near the border

  1148. of Syria, where

  1149. there were other

  1150. Muslims fleeing to

  1151. try and get away

  1152. from the violence, he

  1153. was able to talk

  1154. to a bunch of

  1155. them, and 20

  1156. became followers

  1157. of Christ.

  1158. What did he

  1159. tell them?

  1160. salvation in

  1161. Christ.

  1162. But if you

  1163. follow Christ, you

  1164. will suffer.

  1165. But they

  1166. followed because

  1167. they knew that

  1168. whether in life

  1169. or in death, God

  1170. would rescue them

  1171. for something far

  1172. greater.

  1173. We shouldn't be

  1174. surprised at this,

  1175. but we should be

  1176. eternally amazed

  1177. at how God

  1178. works.

  1179. And it's how God

  1180. works in your

  1181. life, how he

  1182. will work through

  1183. this church.

  1184. He will work

  1185. through you in

  1186. college, in your

  1187. work situation, and

  1188. in your family, through

  1189. the opposition.

  1190. God will bring his

  1191. people to faith.

  1192. Why?

  1193. Well, look at verse

  1194. 26.

  1195. He is the living

  1196. God.

  1197. He endures

  1198. forever.

  1199. His kingdom will

  1200. not be destroyed.

  1201. His dominion will

  1202. never end.

  1203. He rescues and

  1204. he saves.

  1205. He performs signs

  1206. wonders in heavens

  1207. and on the earth.

  1208. He has rescued

  1209. Daniel from the

  1210. power of the lions

  1211. and he has rescued

  1212. us from the

  1213. claws of Satan

  1214. and he will go

  1215. on rescuing his

  1216. people because

  1217. God always works

  1218. good from

  1219. opposition.

  1220. Let's pray.

  1221. for the

  1222. government.

  1223. Well, it's

  1224. good for

  1225. tę claim
