  1. Thanks very much, Dave. So keep your Bibles open there at Daniel 9. We're actually going to be looking at all of it. We didn't read all of it, but we will be looking at it all.

  2. Daniel prayed, and let us pray.

  3. Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. Give ear, O God, and hear.

  4. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.

  5. O Lord, listen. O Lord, forgive. O Lord, hear and act.

  6. Father, please, would you give to us your Holy Spirit? Would he act in our lives and within our church to restore us as people and to restore us in the way you call us to live?

  7. May your transforming work be done amongst us today. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  8. Well, Daniel is longing to go home. He's been in captivity now for about 67 years.

  9. When he was a young teenager, the Babylonians had come in, attacked his city, defeated and destroyed Jerusalem.

  10. His people were carried away as slaves into exile.

  11. And since that time as a young teenager, he has lived under foreign rule, facing constant opposition and persecution.

  12. For Daniel, being away from home was a little bit like being separated from God.

  13. He had no freedom to pray. He had no freedom to pray. That had been denied.

  14. He had no temple to worship. That had been destroyed.

  15. Everything around him that he saw and witnessed intensified his deep longing and desire to go back home.

  16. Now that longing to go home is what all Christians should feel.

  17. We live life in this world, but we know that this is not our true home.

  18. As Peter in the New Testament tells us, it's like we ourselves are living in exile.

  19. That we're strangers in a foreign land.

  20. We're longing for something better.

  21. Our true home. Our eternal home.

  22. We're longing for this place of peace and security.

  23. Joy and happiness.

  24. We're longing that God would come again and restore everything.

  25. And put things right.

  26. And bring us home.

  27. Well, Daniel chapter 9 is all about this prayer for going home.

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  28. A prayer for restoration.

  29. And we're going to see how we can not only pray this prayer, but how we can also have it.

  30. We're going to look at three things.

  31. The promise of God.

  32. The prayer to God.

  33. And the answer from God.

  34. So first, the promise of God.

  35. Restoration.

  36. The promise of God is found in the word of God, which is where we find Daniel.

  37. Look at verse 2.

  38. In the first year of his reign.

  39. This is during the time of the Persians.

  40. I, Daniel, understood from the scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet,

  41. that the desolation of Jerusalem would last 70 years.

  42. Isn't it interesting that as Daniel feels the pain and pressure of being away from home,

  43. Daniel doesn't despair.

  44. Instead, he is driven towards God's word.

  45. And in his reading, he turns, we are told, to the prophet Jeremiah.

  46. He had a copy of the prophecy of Jeremiah.

  47. And here's what I think he was reading.

  48. You might like to turn to it.

  49. In Jeremiah chapter 29.

    Jeremiah 29 chapter mention

  50. It's just back a few pages.

  51. If somebody's got a page number, they could call it out and I'll help you along.

  52. Jeremiah 29.

  53. It's on page 789.

  54. So Jeremiah 29 on page 789.

  55. So Daniel has been reading Jeremiah, what we're going to read now.

  56. And here's what I think he was reading.

  57. Jeremiah 29 verse 10.

    Jeremiah 29:10

  58. So this is written 70 years before Daniel read it.

  59. This is what the Lord says.

  60. When 70 years are completed for Babylon,

  61. I will come to you and fulfill my gracious promise

  62. to bring you back to this place.

  63. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord,

  64. plans to prosper you and not to harm you,

  65. plans to give you hope and a future.

  66. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me,

  67. and I will listen to you.

  68. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

  69. I will be found by you, declares the Lord,

  70. and will bring you back from captivity.

  71. I will gather you from the nations and places where I have banished you, declares the Lord,

  72. and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.

  73. Back to Daniel 9.

  74. What an amazing promise to read in the midst of facing the struggles of life

  75. in a world that you know is not your true home.

  76. And Daniel has picked up the book of Jeremiah and he started reading it,

  77. and we can imagine him being so excited because now it's almost 70 years

  78. since Daniel and God's people have been taken into exile.

  79. His longing to go home is about to become a reality.

  80. God had made this promise all those years ago to restore his people,

  81. and Daniel has been reminded of it as he has read God's word.

  82. So what does he do with the promise?

  83. Well, look at chapter 9, verse 3.

  84. Daniel 9, verse 3.

    Daniel 9:3

  85. So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition,

  86. in fasting, in sackcloth and ashes.

  87. The promise of God has motivated Daniel to ask God

  88. to fulfil the promise that he has made.

  89. God's word causes Daniel to start praying

  90. for the very thing that God has planned and purposed to do.

  91. So this promise is found in God's word,

  92. but it is also found, or also rests, in the character of God.

  93. Look at verse 4.

  94. I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed,

  95. O Lord, the great and awesome God,

  96. who keeps his covenant of love with all those who love him

  97. and obey his commands.

  98. Through this prayer, Daniel is reminding himself

  99. of the God that he has, the God who loves him.

  100. He tells us in verse 4, he's great and he's awesome.

  101. And God shows his greatness and his awesomeness,

  102. again look at verse 4,

  103. by keeping his covenant of love.

  104. God doesn't forget his people.

  105. He doesn't give up on his people.

  106. He doesn't abandon his people.

  107. God's character demands that he keeps his promise.

  108. I have promised to restore you

  109. and I will restore you.

  110. So Daniel turns to prayer,

  111. knowing that this God, his God,

  112. is faithful and loyal

  113. and will do what he says he will do.

  114. That's the trust, the confidence that he has.

  115. And we know from history,

  116. about three years after Daniel read this

  117. and prayed this prayer,

  118. when the 70 years were up,

  119. God's people were allowed to return home,

  120. back to Jerusalem,

  121. to settle in their own land.

  122. God did keep his promise.

  123. And what I want us to grasp is this,

  124. that this is the same promise keeping God

  125. that we know and that we have access to.

  126. God has plans to prosper us.

  127. God has plans not to harm us.

  128. God has plans to give us a hope and a future.

  129. So what are those plans?

  130. Are we somehow to return to the land like Daniel did?

  131. Well, no, in the full story of Scripture,

  132. we know that this plan for a future and a hope

  133. is so much more and so much greater.

  134. Turn with me.

  135. Keep your finger in Daniel 9

  136. and go forward to 1 Peter.

  137. It's on page 1217.

  138. It's on page 1217.

  139. 1 Peter, chapter 1.

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  140. Verse 1.

  141. It's on page 1217.

  142. And here we read these words.

  143. Peter actually picks up this theme of exile.

  144. And he says,

  145. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

  146. to God's elect,

  147. this is God's people,

  148. strangers in the world

  149. who've been scattered.

  150. So God's people have been scattered

  151. throughout the world

  152. and they feel like strangers.

  153. They're in exile.

  154. And then look what he goes on to tell them.

  155. Verse 3.

  156. Praise be to the God and Father

  157. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  158. In his great mercy,

  159. he has given us new birth

  160. into a living hope

  161. through the resurrection

  162. of Jesus Christ from the dead

  163. and into an inheritance

  164. that can never perish,

  165. spoil or fade,

  166. kept in heaven for you.

  167. Who through faith

  168. are shielded by God's power

  169. until the coming of salvation

  170. that is ready to be revealed

  171. in the last time.

  172. This is God's plan for you.

  173. This is God's promise for you.

  174. He will come and gather up those

  175. who have been scattered,

  176. who do not feel at home

  177. and are longing for their eternal home.

  178. God has promised

  179. promised

  180. and God will deliver

  181. on his promise.

  182. So first we have

  183. the promise of God,

  184. restoration.

  185. Second,

  186. the prayer to God

  187. which is all about

  188. confession

  189. and reputation.

  190. God has made the promise

  191. to restore his people.

  192. He is going to bring them home.

  193. But to experience

  194. this,

  195. we've got to listen carefully

  196. to Daniel's prayer.

  197. It starts,

  198. first of all,

  199. with confession of sin.

  200. Daniel 9 verse 5.

    Daniel 9:5

  201. Listen to his prayer.

  202. We have sinned

  203. and done wrong.

  204. We have been wicked

  205. and have rebelled.

  206. We have turned away

  207. from your commands

  208. and laws.

  209. We have not listened

  210. to your servants,

  211. the prophets,

  212. who spoke in your name

  213. to our kings,

  214. our princes and our fathers

  215. and to all the people

  216. of the land.

  217. Do you see what's going on here?

  218. Before there can be

  219. restoration,

  220. there must be

  221. confession.

  222. Before restoration,

  223. there must be

  224. confession.

  225. You see,

  226. the reason why

  227. they were in captivity

  228. in the first place

  229. is because of their sin.

  230. Look at verse 7.

  231. Lord,

  232. you are righteous,

  233. but this day

  234. we are covered

  235. with shame.

  236. The men of Judah,

  237. the people of Jerusalem

  238. and all Israel,

  239. both near and far,

  240. in all the countries

  241. where you have scattered us,

  242. because of

  243. our

  244. unfaithfulness

  245. to you.

  246. Yes,

  247. it's true,

  248. Nebuchadnezzar,

  249. the king of the Babylonians,

  250. had come and defeated

  251. God's people

  252. and destroyed

  253. God's temple.

  254. But the reason

  255. why this happened

  256. was because of their sin.

  257. The reason why

  258. they are not at home

  259. presently

  260. is because they had

  261. turned away from God

  262. and did not

  263. listen to God.

  264. So before you

  265. and I can experience

  266. restoration,

  267. we must take

  268. responsibility

  269. for our action.

  270. Daniel,

  271. through the prayer,

  272. is pleading

  273. that we take ownership

  274. for what we have done.

  275. Regret

  276. is not enough.

  277. This is not a prayer

  278. of regret.

  279. Regret simply means

  280. feeling sorry for yourself.

  281. There's no heart change.

  282. Repentance

  283. is what is required.

  284. Repentance

  285. owns

  286. our behaviour

  287. and longs

  288. for God's mercy

  289. and looks to him

  290. to change

  291. our heart.

  292. Verse 15.

  293. Now,

  294. O Lord,

  295. our God,

  296. who brought

  297. your people

  298. out of Egypt

  299. with a mighty hand

  300. and who made

  301. for yourself

  302. a name

  303. that endures

  304. to this day,

  305. we have sinned.

  306. We

  307. have done wrong.

  308. O Lord,

  309. in keeping

  310. with all

  311. your righteous

  312. acts,

  313. turn away

  314. your anger

  315. and your wrath

  316. from Jerusalem,

  317. your city,

  318. your holy hill.

  319. There must be

  320. confession

  321. and it's no

  322. different for you

  323. or I.

  324. If we are to

  325. experience

  326. God's restoration

  327. in our lives,

  328. we've got to

  329. face up to

  330. our sin.

  331. Sin is too

  332. serious.

  333. It can't

  334. be ignored.

  335. We can't

  336. pretend it's

  337. not there.

  338. And Daniel

  339. was saying

  340. to the people

  341. and he's

  342. saying to us

  343. and God

  344. is saying

  345. to us,

  346. there is

  347. no moving

  348. on.

  349. There is

  350. no going

  351. home.

  352. There is

  353. no restoration

  354. until it

  355. is dealt

  356. with.

  357. But not

  358. only must

  359. we confess

  360. our own

  361. sin.

  362. Part of

  363. this also

  364. means that

  365. we go on

  366. to seek

  367. the reputation

  368. of God.

  369. Look at

  370. verse 17.

  371. Now,

  372. our God,

  373. hear the

  374. prayers and

  375. petitions of

  376. your servant.

  377. For your

  378. sake,

  379. O Lord,

  380. look with

  381. favour on

  382. your desolate

  383. sanctuary.

  384. Give ear,

  385. O God,

  386. and hear.

  387. Open your

  388. eyes and

  389. see the

  390. desolation

  391. of the

  392. city that

  393. bears your

  394. name.

  395. This is

  396. your city,

  397. your people.

  398. God was

  399. so involved

  400. with his

  401. people,

  402. he loved

  403. and treasured

  404. his people

  405. so much,

  406. he had

  407. given them

  408. his own

  409. name.

  410. His

  411. reputation

  412. was wrapped

  413. up in the

  414. lives of

  415. these people.

  416. God

  417. and the

  418. God

  419. was

  420. involved

  421. in the

  422. God

  423. whom

  424. they

  425. said

  426. they

  427. followed.

  428. God

  429. was

  430. involved

  431. intimately

  432. with them.

  433. But the

  434. problem is

  435. they had

  436. dragged the

  437. name,

  438. the reputation

  439. of God

  440. through the

  441. mud.

  442. Just back

  443. up a little

  444. bit to the

  445. end of

  446. verse 16,

  447. the second

  448. half of

  449. verse 16.

  450. He says

  451. our sins

  452. and the

  453. iniquities

  454. of our

  455. fathers

  456. have made

  457. Jerusalem

  458. and your

  459. people

  460. an object

  461. of scorn

  462. to all

  463. those around

  464. us.

  465. God

  466. had become

  467. a joke.

  468. No one

  469. was taking

  470. God

  471. seriously

  472. because they

  473. didn't care

  474. for the

  475. reputation

  476. of God.

  477. They were

  478. living as

  479. they pleased.

  480. If God's

  481. people were

  482. going to

  483. experience

  484. anything

  485. of God's

  486. restoration,

  487. that had

  488. to change.

  489. Verse 19,

  490. O Lord,

  491. listen,

  492. O Lord,

  493. forgive,

  494. O Lord,

  495. hear and

  496. act for

  497. your sake.

  498. O my

  499. God,

  500. do not

  501. delay

  502. because

  503. your city

  504. and your

  505. people

  506. bear

  507. your name.

  508. This is

  509. about

  510. transformation.

  511. And what

  512. about us?

  513. What about

  514. this reputation

  515. of God

  516. being restored

  517. in our

  518. lives?

  519. Well,

  520. when Jesus

  521. died on

  522. the cross,

  523. he exchanged

  524. names

  525. with us.

  526. He took

  527. my name

  528. and in

  529. its place

  530. he gave

  531. us his

  532. name.

  533. and because

  534. we now

  535. bear his

  536. name,

  537. we can

  538. enter in.

  539. That name,

  540. the name

  541. of Jesus

  542. on our

  543. lives,

  544. guarantees

  545. our future

  546. hope.

  547. It gives

  548. us access

  549. to our

  550. eternal

  551. home.

  552. It gives

  553. us access

  554. to our

  555. heavenly

  556. father.

  557. It gives

  558. us the

  559. confidence

  560. and the

  561. assurance

  562. to come

  563. to him.

  564. Christ

  565. took our

  566. sinful

  567. reputation

  568. so that

  569. we might

  570. gain his

  571. perfect

  572. reputation.

  573. He gave

  574. us his

  575. name so

  576. that we

  577. would live

  578. for God

  579. in this

  580. world,

  581. so that

  582. people who

  583. look at

  584. us and

  585. see us

  586. would be

  587. drawn towards

  588. the love

  589. and the

  590. beauty of

  591. God and

  592. experience

  593. his

  594. restoration

  595. in their

  596. lives.

  597. Before

  598. there is

  599. restoration,

  600. there must

  601. be confession

  602. and a

  603. seeking

  604. after the

  605. reputation

  606. of God.

  607. So God

  608. has given

  609. his promise,

  610. Daniel has

  611. responded in

  612. prayer,

  613. and third,

  614. God gives

  615. his answer.

  616. Look at

  617. verse 23.

  618. As soon

  619. as you

  620. began to

  621. pray,

  622. an answer

  623. was given

  624. which I

  625. have come

  626. to tell

  627. you,

  628. for you

  629. are highly

  630. esteemed,

  631. which means

  632. you are

  633. treasured,

  634. you are

  635. loved,

  636. my child.

  637. I will

  638. answer you.

  639. Therefore,

  640. consider the

  641. message and

  642. understand the

  643. vision.

  644. So here's

  645. God's answer

  646. to Daniel's

  647. prayer,

  648. and it's not

  649. straightforward,

  650. it comes by

  651. way of a

  652. vision,

  653. and as we've

  654. been seeing

  655. over the

  656. last few

  657. weeks,

  658. when Daniel

  659. has a

  660. vision,

  661. it's really

  662. not

  663. straightforward,

  664. it's a

  665. bit complicated,

  666. and we're

  667. going to

  668. get into

  669. a whole

  670. lot of

  671. numbers here,

  672. but we'll

  673. explain that

  674. in just a

  675. minute.

  676. But what I

  677. want us to

  678. focus on

  679. here is,

  680. God's

  681. answer is

  682. full of

  683. expectation,

  684. of hope,

  685. of a

  686. future.

  687. Look at

  688. verse 24,

  689. here's how

  690. the answer

  691. starts.

  692. 77s are

  693. decreed for

  694. your people.

  695. 77s.

  696. I thought

  697. we were in

  698. church,

  699. not in

  700. school.

  701. What are

  702. we to

  703. make of

  704. 77s?

  705. Well,

  706. here's my

  707. take and

  708. my understanding

  709. of it,

  710. and I

  711. think this

  712. is how

  713. most of

  714. the

  715. commentators

  716. go on

  717. this.

  718. We're not

  719. to take

  720. it literally.

  721. We're not

  722. to take

  723. these numbers

  724. literally,

  725. but symbolically.

  726. First,

  727. remember,

  728. Daniel was

  729. told that

  730. they would

  731. return after

  732. 70 years.

  733. That 70

  734. years was

  735. a set

  736. period of

  737. time.

  738. But here

  739. he's talking

  740. about 77s,

  741. or if you

  742. like,

  743. 70 times

  744. 7.

  745. So you

  746. can do

  747. the maths

  748. on that

  749. one.

  750. In other

  751. words,

  752. this is a

  753. time that

  754. is going

  755. to last

  756. much longer

  757. than 70

  758. years.

  759. It's going

  760. to go

  761. on and

  762. on and

  763. on and

  764. on.

  765. second,

  766. the number

  767. 7 in

  768. the Bible

  769. represents

  770. perfection

  771. and

  772. completion.

  773. So you

  774. read some

  775. of these

  776. visions here

  777. and in

  778. Revelation as

  779. well.

  780. Whenever

  781. 7 comes

  782. up,

  783. it tends

  784. to refer

  785. to perfection

  786. and completion.

  787. So 70

  788. times 7

  789. means a

  790. multiplication.

  791. That means

  792. perfection

  793. times perfection.

  794. Now we

  795. put all

  796. that together

  797. and we've

  798. got this

  799. timescale

  800. that is

  801. going on

  802. and on

  803. and on

  804. to which

  805. there seems

  806. no end.

  807. And it

  808. is marked

  809. by absolute

  810. perfection

  811. and completion.

  812. So God's

  813. answer to

  814. Daniel is

  815. he's giving

  816. him a

  817. picture of

  818. full and

  819. final

  820. restoration.

  821. And he

  822. begins to

  823. give us an

  824. insight of

  825. what it's

  826. going to be

  827. like.

  828. Look at

  829. verse 24

  830. we'll read

  831. it all.

  832. Seventy

  833. sevens are

  834. decreed for

  835. your people

  836. this long

  837. time that

  838. goes on

  839. and on

  840. of perfection.

  841. A time

  842. decreed for

  843. your people

  844. and your

  845. holy city

  846. to finish

  847. transgression,

  848. to put an

  849. end to

  850. sin,

  851. to atone

  852. for wickedness,

  853. to cover it

  854. up once and

  855. for all,

  856. to bring in

  857. everlasting

  858. righteousness,

  859. righteousness,

  860. to seal up

  861. vision and

  862. prophecy,

  863. that is to

  864. bring in

  865. fulfilment of

  866. all that's

  867. been said,

  868. and to

  869. anoint the

  870. most holy,

  871. God's

  872. king.

  873. God's

  874. answer to

  875. Daniel is

  876. so much

  877. more than

  878. Daniel expected.

  879. Daniel just

  880. wanted to

  881. go home to

  882. his earthly

  883. city in

  884. Jerusalem,

  885. just down

  886. the road.

  887. That was

  888. what he was

  889. praying for.

  890. God's

  891. answer to

  892. Daniel is

  893. a promise

  894. that is

  895. bigger and

  896. greater than

  897. he could

  898. ever imagine.

  899. This was

  900. full and

  901. final restoration

  902. in not an

  903. earthly city,

  904. but an

  905. eternal city.

  906. Sin and

  907. suffering free,

  908. where there

  909. would be the

  910. end of sin,

  911. where there

  912. would be

  913. everlasting

  914. righteousness.

  915. This is the

  916. answer that

  917. God gives.

  918. And what we

  919. see in the

  920. rest of

  921. chapter 9 is

  922. that this

  923. answer is

  924. expanded in

  925. three ways.

  926. So he fills

  927. out this

  928. answer in

  929. three ways.

  930. First, he

  931. shows us

  932. what it's

  933. going to be

  934. like, what

  935. this home is

  936. going to be

  937. like.

  938. Look at

  939. verse 25.

  940. No one

  941. understand this.

  942. From the

  943. issuing of

  944. the decree

  945. to restore

  946. and rebuild

  947. Jerusalem

  948. until the

  949. anointed one,

  950. the ruler,

  951. comes,

  952. there will be

  953. seven sevens

  954. and sixty-two

  955. sevens.

  956. Now again, I

  957. don't want us to

  958. get caught up in

  959. numbers here,

  960. but simply to

  961. see this as

  962. periods of

  963. time.

  964. seven sevens

  965. refers to the

  966. time when

  967. Daniel and

  968. God's people

  969. return home to

  970. build the

  971. temple.

  972. They're going

  973. to be brought

  974. back from

  975. exile to their

  976. homeland.

  977. And that

  978. initial time is

  979. going to be a

  980. time of peace

  981. and security,

  982. joy and

  983. happiness.

  984. The people

  985. will settle

  986. and they'll

  987. begin to

  988. rebuild,

  989. but it will

  990. be a limited

  991. time.

  992. Because God

  993. wants them to

  994. understand that

  995. while God is

  996. bringing them

  997. restoration,

  998. it is only

  999. partial

  1000. restoration.

  1001. It's only a

  1002. taste of what

  1003. is to come.

  1004. In other words,

  1005. the return from

  1006. exile to their

  1007. homeland is just

  1008. a picture of

  1009. the final

  1010. restoration that

  1011. is to come.

  1012. It's like the

  1013. starter before

  1014. the main

  1015. course.

  1016. It's the

  1017. crumbs before

  1018. the big

  1019. meal.

  1020. And it's

  1021. exactly the

  1022. same for us.

  1023. God is giving

  1024. us an insight

  1025. to say,

  1026. when you

  1027. turn to

  1028. Christ,

  1029. that is

  1030. only the

  1031. beginnings.

  1032. It is only

  1033. the taste

  1034. of what is

  1035. to come.

  1036. The new

  1037. life that

  1038. you have

  1039. now is

  1040. nothing

  1041. compared to

  1042. the eternal

  1043. life and

  1044. the blessings

  1045. that are to

  1046. come in the

  1047. future.

  1048. So he

  1049. begins to

  1050. give us a

  1051. picture of

  1052. what it will

  1053. be like.

  1054. And it will

  1055. be just like

  1056. Daniel returning

  1057. home to his

  1058. land for

  1059. peace and

  1060. security,

  1061. joy and

  1062. happiness.

  1063. But he

  1064. also tells

  1065. us what

  1066. to expect

  1067. while we're

  1068. waiting for

  1069. the home.

  1070. So look at

  1071. verse 25

  1072. again.

  1073. The end of

  1074. it he says

  1075. there will be

  1076. seven sevens

  1077. and sixty-two

  1078. sevens.

  1079. So this

  1080. sixty-two

  1081. sevens is

  1082. talking about

  1083. to another

  1084. period of

  1085. time which

  1086. is a bit

  1087. longer.

  1088. He says it

  1089. will be

  1090. rebuilt with

  1091. streets and

  1092. a trench but

  1093. in times of

  1094. trouble.

  1095. Look at the

  1096. end of

  1097. verse 26.

  1098. He says the

  1099. end will come

  1100. like a flood.

  1101. War will

  1102. continue until

  1103. the end and

  1104. desolations,

  1105. trouble, have

  1106. been decreed.

  1107. So this

  1108. sixty-two

  1109. sevens is

  1110. referring to a

  1111. time which

  1112. follows the

  1113. return to

  1114. exile right

  1115. into the

  1116. future.

  1117. And he's

  1118. telling us that

  1119. it's not going

  1120. to be an

  1121. easy time.

  1122. Look at

  1123. verse 26.

  1124. After the

  1125. sixty-two

  1126. sevens the

  1127. anointed one

  1128. will be cut

  1129. off.

  1130. The anointed

  1131. one was

  1132. Jesus Christ,

  1133. the one to

  1134. come.

  1135. He will be

  1136. rejected and

  1137. ignored.

  1138. He will be

  1139. crucified.

  1140. But that's

  1141. not just going

  1142. to happen to

  1143. Jesus.

  1144. God's people

  1145. will continue

  1146. to live in

  1147. times of

  1148. trouble.

  1149. war.

  1150. There will

  1151. be continued

  1152. opposition in

  1153. persecution.

  1154. In other

  1155. words, he's

  1156. telling Daniel

  1157. and us

  1158. that we are

  1159. to have a

  1160. measured

  1161. expectation.

  1162. A measured

  1163. expectation.

  1164. Don't get

  1165. ahead of

  1166. ourselves too

  1167. quickly.

  1168. Don't think

  1169. that just

  1170. because we've

  1171. become Christians

  1172. that all of a

  1173. sudden we're

  1174. going to get

  1175. all the future

  1176. blessings right

  1177. here, right

  1178. now.

  1179. That is not

  1180. the case.

  1181. He's saying

  1182. we are to

  1183. prepare for

  1184. suffering now

  1185. and glory

  1186. later.

  1187. We are to

  1188. prepare for

  1189. suffering now

  1190. and glory

  1191. later.

  1192. So he shows

  1193. us what to

  1194. expect.

  1195. And third,

  1196. he shows us

  1197. what's going

  1198. to happen

  1199. at the very

  1200. end.

  1201. let's read

  1202. verse 27

  1203. and again

  1204. we'll just

  1205. pick out the

  1206. main things

  1207. here and

  1208. not get

  1209. too caught

  1210. up in the

  1211. minute detail.

  1212. He,

  1213. verse 27,

  1214. so here it's

  1215. talking about

  1216. an enemy

  1217. of God.

  1218. He will

  1219. confirm a

  1220. covenant with

  1221. many people.

  1222. So he's going

  1223. to bring many

  1224. people to

  1225. himself.

  1226. For one

  1227. seven, this

  1228. period of

  1229. time.

  1230. In the middle

  1231. of the seven

  1232. he will put

  1233. an end to

  1234. sacrifice and

  1235. offering.

  1236. So he's going

  1237. to be opposed

  1238. to all that

  1239. God does.

  1240. And on the

  1241. wing of the

  1242. temple he

  1243. will set up

  1244. an abomination

  1245. that causes

  1246. desolation

  1247. until the

  1248. end that

  1249. is decreed

  1250. is poured

  1251. out on

  1252. him.

  1253. Now I

  1254. think this

  1255. one seven

  1256. refers to

  1257. the time

  1258. at the

  1259. very end

  1260. just before

  1261. Christ returns.

  1262. And up

  1263. until that

  1264. time,

  1265. until Christ

  1266. returns,

  1267. there's going

  1268. to be

  1269. hatred

  1270. towards

  1271. God.

  1272. There

  1273. will be

  1274. an enemy

  1275. and there

  1276. is an

  1277. enemy

  1278. that is

  1279. against

  1280. God

  1281. and against

  1282. his people.

  1283. But look

  1284. what it

  1285. tells us

  1286. at the

  1287. very end

  1288. of verse

  1289. 27.

  1290. Until

  1291. the end

  1292. that is

  1293. decreed

  1294. is poured

  1295. out on

  1296. him.

  1297. So God

  1298. is telling

  1299. us that

  1300. there is a

  1301. specified

  1302. time that

  1303. has been

  1304. set in

  1305. God's

  1306. calendar

  1307. time that

  1308. will

  1309. God's

  1310. ultimate

  1311. enemy,

  1312. Satan

  1313. himself,

  1314. will be

  1315. destroyed

  1316. once and

  1317. for all.

  1318. That time

  1319. has been

  1320. decreed.

  1321. That end

  1322. will come.

  1323. The enemy

  1324. will be

  1325. destroyed

  1326. once and

  1327. for all

  1328. and God's

  1329. people will

  1330. enjoy full

  1331. and final

  1332. restoration

  1333. at that

  1334. time.

  1335. God

  1336. gives us

  1337. a picture,

  1338. a glimpse

  1339. of you

  1340. into what

  1341. is to

  1342. come.

  1343. So all

  1344. the troubles

  1345. that we

  1346. see around

  1347. us today,

  1348. all the

  1349. troubles that

  1350. we may be

  1351. in today

  1352. and that

  1353. we experience

  1354. today,

  1355. God says

  1356. you will

  1357. walk through

  1358. them.

  1359. But I

  1360. will be

  1361. with you

  1362. and I

  1363. am bringing

  1364. you towards

  1365. a final

  1366. end

  1367. when the

  1368. enemy and

  1369. all his

  1370. opposition

  1371. will be

  1372. destroyed

  1373. and his

  1374. end will

  1375. come.

  1376. Do you

  1377. see what

  1378. Daniel prayed

  1379. for in

  1380. all of

  1381. this?

  1382. He was

  1383. praying for

  1384. something

  1385. really small.

  1386. I just

  1387. want to go

  1388. home,

  1389. home to

  1390. my land.

  1391. And God

  1392. answered his

  1393. prayer by

  1394. giving him

  1395. something so

  1396. much greater

  1397. and superior,

  1398. an eternal

  1399. home.

  1400. our true

  1401. home.

  1402. And we

  1403. are to

  1404. pray this

  1405. big

  1406. prayer,

  1407. these

  1408. eternal

  1409. things in

  1410. mind,

  1411. that God

  1412. would come

  1413. and restore

  1414. people today

  1415. and restore

  1416. people for

  1417. an eternal

  1418. future to

  1419. come.

  1420. God

  1421. as we

  1422. finish,

  1423. go with

  1424. me please

  1425. to 1

  1426. Peter

  1427. again.

  1428. It's on

  1429. page

  1430. 1217.

  1431. 1

  1432. Peter.

  1433. And let's

  1434. just read

  1435. these few

  1436. verses

  1437. by way of

  1438. reflection,

  1439. by way of

  1440. meditation.

  1441. salvation.

  1442. This is

  1443. what is

  1444. ours in

  1445. Christ.

  1446. Let me

  1447. read from

  1448. verse 3

  1449. and just

  1450. follow along

  1451. and be

  1452. amazed at

  1453. what we

  1454. have,

  1455. what we

  1456. have to

  1457. face,

  1458. and what

  1459. is to

  1460. come.

  1461. praise be

  1462. to the

  1463. God and

  1464. Father of

  1465. our Lord

  1466. Jesus

  1467. Christ.

  1468. In his

  1469. great mercy

  1470. he has

  1471. given us

  1472. new birth

  1473. into a

  1474. living hope

  1475. through the

  1476. resurrection

  1477. of Jesus

  1478. Christ from

  1479. the dead

  1480. and into

  1481. an inheritance

  1482. that can

  1483. never perish,

  1484. spoil or

  1485. fade,

  1486. kept in

  1487. heaven for

  1488. you.

  1489. Who

  1490. through faith

  1491. are shielded

  1492. by God's

  1493. power until

  1494. the coming

  1495. of that

  1496. salvation

  1497. that is

  1498. ready to

  1499. be revealed

  1500. in the

  1501. last time.

  1502. In

  1503. this

  1504. you

  1505. greatly

  1506. rejoice,

  1507. though now

  1508. for a little

  1509. while you

  1510. have had to

  1511. suffer grief

  1512. in all

  1513. kinds of

  1514. trials.

  1515. These have

  1516. come so

  1517. that your

  1518. faith of

  1519. greater worth

  1520. than gold,

  1521. which perishes

  1522. even though

  1523. refined by

  1524. fire,

  1525. may be

  1526. proved

  1527. genuine

  1528. and may

  1529. result in

  1530. praise,

  1531. glory and

  1532. honour when

  1533. Jesus Christ

  1534. is revealed.

  1535. Though you

  1536. have not

  1537. seen him,

  1538. you love

  1539. him,

  1540. and though

  1541. you do not

  1542. see him

  1543. now,

  1544. you believe

  1545. in him

  1546. and are

  1547. filled with

  1548. an inexpressible

  1549. and glorious

  1550. joy,

  1551. for you

  1552. are receiving

  1553. the goal

  1554. of your

  1555. faith,

  1556. the salvation

  1557. salvation

  1558. of your

  1559. souls.

  1560. Let's

  1561. pray.

  1562. Let's

  1563. pray.

  1564. Our

  1565. Father God,

  1566. we pray that

  1567. you would

  1568. expand

  1569. our vision,

  1570. not to

  1571. be so

  1572. confined to

  1573. our little

  1574. lives in

  1575. this little

  1576. space and

  1577. time right

  1578. here,

  1579. right now,

  1580. but you

  1581. would expand

  1582. our vision

  1583. to see the

  1584. grand and

  1585. great

  1586. restoration

  1587. that you

  1588. are bringing

  1589. about

  1590. and that you

  1591. will one day

  1592. bring to its

  1593. full and final

  1594. conclusion.

  1595. until that

  1596. day,

  1597. Father,

  1598. would you do

  1599. your work in

  1600. our lives?

  1601. Would you

  1602. cause people,

  1603. our community

  1604. and ourselves

  1605. as well to be

  1606. people of

  1607. confession,

  1608. seeking your

  1609. reputation?

  1610. And we

  1611. pray that

  1612. people will

  1613. know the

  1614. restoration that

  1615. you alone can

  1616. bring of

  1617. new life,

  1618. forgiveness of

  1619. all of our

  1620. sins,

  1621. the promise

  1622. of your

  1623. spirit,

  1624. of life to

  1625. come in

  1626. the new

  1627. heaven and

  1628. the new

  1629. earth.

  1630. We thank

  1631. you for all

  1632. that you

  1633. have given

  1634. to us.

  1635. We thank

  1636. you for

  1637. this wonderful

  1638. plan,

  1639. a plan not

  1640. to harm

  1641. us,

  1642. a plan not

  1643. to do us

  1644. any difficulty,

  1645. a plan to

  1646. prosper us

  1647. and give us

  1648. hope and a

  1649. future.

  1650. thank you

  1651. Lord.

  1652. Amen.
