  1. and my friend is not? Or why am I the only Christian that's in my family?

  2. Or maybe it's a little bit closer to home. Why am I not a Christian?

  3. So how is it that people become followers of Jesus?

  4. What can we do so that my friend or perhaps my mum or my dad or the person who I work with or go to college with,

  5. what can I do so that they too can become a follower of Jesus Christ?

  6. Well, the simple answer is found in Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  7. The story of the Ethiopian who hears the good news about Jesus from Philip and becomes a Christian.

  8. So let's look at this story as we seek to answer the question, how do people become Christians?

  9. The first part of the answer is this.

  10. God's gospel plan.

  11. And we see this worked out in three simple ways.

  12. First, we see his plan worked out in the world.

  13. The beginning of Acts, no need to look it up, makes it very clear what God's plan is.

  14. In Acts chapter 1 and verse 8, it says this.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  15. Jesus is speaking to his disciples.

  16. He says,

  17. God's intention was that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, the promise of salvation would be announced to all people.

  18. So God is making it very clear at the very beginning that his gospel doesn't belong to one particular culture or one particular race or people,

  19. but it's for everyone everywhere in the world.

  20. So how did people get to here?

  21. Well, go back to chapter 8.

  22. Chapter 8 and verse 1.

  23. Look at what we read there at the beginning of chapter 8.

  24. It tells us there that a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem.

  25. And all except the apostles were scattered.

  26. Where?

  27. Throughout Judea and Samaria.

  28. All of a sudden, families who had trusted in Jesus Christ and who were part of the church in the city of Jerusalem

  29. had to move to other places for fear of their lives.

  30. They had to escape.

  31. And what did they do when they moved to other places?

  32. Well, look at verse 4.

  33. Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.

  34. And we're told they went into Judea and Samaria.

  35. Just as God had said.

  36. This was no accident.

  37. This was all part of God's working.

  38. His sovereign and great plan that the persecution would move people out to different places

  39. so that they could begin to share the good news with other people.

  40. So that's the first step.

  41. The second part is this.

  42. God's gospel plan in the witness is also worked out in Philip's life.

  43. Because Philip was in Jerusalem and now he's having to move out to another place.

  44. Look at verse 26 of Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  45. Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip,

  46. Go south to the road, the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.

  47. This is a road that goes southeast towards the coast from Jerusalem, about a 60 mile journey.

  48. As he started out on his way, he met an Ethiopian eunuch.

  49. An important official in charge of the treasury.

  50. So do you see how God is working in such a way that he brings Philip into contact with an unbeliever?

  51. So God's working in the world.

  52. He's working in Philip and he's working in the life of the unbeliever.

  53. Amazingly, God is doing that in this man from Ethiopia.

  54. This unbeliever, we've been told, has been up to Jerusalem to go to the temple.

  55. And now he's on his way home again and he's opened up his Bible to the Old Testament.

  56. Well, that's all they would have had then, the scriptures of Isaiah.

  57. And he's reading away.

  58. Now what would prompt a non-Jew to start reading the scriptures?

  59. Well, it seems God is at work in his life as well.

  60. This man is searching.

  61. He's not satisfied.

  62. What he has isn't enough.

  63. So God in his gospel plan is bringing all these people together.

  64. So that they can hear the good news.

  65. Now Philip's encounter with the Ethiopian is really quite humorous.

  66. Look at verse 29.

  67. The spirit told Philip, go to that chariot and stay near it.

  68. Then Philip ran up to the chariot and he heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet.

  69. Do you understand what you're reading?

  70. Philip asked.

  71. Well, how can I?

  72. He said, unless someone explains it to me.

  73. So he invited Philip to come and sit with him.

  74. You could imagine the scene that's there.

  75. What are you reading?

  76. Isaiah.

  77. Do you understand it?

  78. No.

  79. Can I help you?

  80. Yes.

  81. Any chance of a lift?

  82. Come on, get up, come with me.

  83. And I'll explain it to you.

  84. Is this a chance meeting?

  85. I don't think it is.

  86. Do you see how God's gospel plan is at work in the world?

  87. In his witness, Philip, and in the unbeliever, the Ethiopian.

  88. He's working everything together so that people can become Christians.

  89. Mimi tells us in her story, if you read it, that she met her cousin who invited her to a meeting where the gospel was shared.

  90. Philip, in his testimony, he told us how he moved from Congo to Finland and from Finland to Amsterdam.

  91. And there he met his niece who explained the gospel to him.

  92. Are these chance meetings?

  93. I don't think they were.

  94. And for us, it changes how we think about where we actually live, the house that we live in, the place that we work.

  95. And why I happen to be, perhaps, the only Christian in my family or in my college.

  96. At one level, we all choose the different places we live.

  97. We make decisions.

  98. We say, I'm going to go to that college and I'm going to do that course.

  99. Or I'm going to take that job.

  100. But at another level, God has planned out where we're going to live, where we're going to work, and what we're going to study.

  101. And if you are a Christian, God has placed you where you are because there are people just like the Ethiopian who doesn't know the good news about Jesus.

  102. And God has you there so that you can share and live your life amongst the people.

  103. So, how do people become Christians?

  104. Well, first, we've got to understand God's big plan.

  105. But second, his invitation.

  106. We're told a little bit about the Ethiopian in verse 27.

  107. Let's read verse 27 again.

  108. So, he started out, that's Philip, and on his way, he met an Ethiopian eunuch,

  109. an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians.

  110. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship.

  111. Now, in today's language, we might say that he was the finance minister.

  112. He's in charge of the treasury.

  113. He's the one who decides what taxes, what the budget is going to be.

  114. And he's a very important guy.

  115. So important, he's being chauffeur-driven in a first-century stretched limo.

  116. Except for it's a chariot.

  117. Now, we're told, verse 28, on his way home, he was sitting in his chariot, reading the book of Isaiah, the prophets.

  118. This unbeliever has travelled literally hundreds of miles all the way from Ethiopia,

  119. this great big vast kingdom of which the queen was in charge of, a very wealthy place,

  120. and he's travelled all the way up to Jerusalem to go and worship.

  121. Except when he arrives at the temple, he discovers that he actually can't worship.

  122. He's not allowed into the temple.

  123. Well, how do we know that?

  124. Where did you read that?

  125. What verse was that, Johnny?

  126. Well, we are told that he is a foreigner.

  127. He's an Ethiopian.

  128. He's come from a different place.

  129. And secondly, he is a eunuch.

  130. A eunuch simply means that he has been sexually altered or castrated.

  131. Now, for us, that might seem quite odd and quite strange, but in a culture like that, it could be quite common.

  132. It was a sign, a way of showing that you were completely committed and loyal to the work and to the service that you were involved in.

  133. So this was a very committed guy.

  134. But as far as temple rules go, I might have it there.

  135. Yes, in Deuteronomy 23, you can look it up later.

  136. As far as temple rules go, foreigners and eunuchs were not allowed into the temple.

  137. You were kept outside.

  138. You couldn't get close.

  139. You were excluded.

  140. You were shut out.

  141. You're not allowed in.

  142. So it seems like his journey all the way up from Ethiopia up to Jerusalem was a complete waste of time.

  143. And so he leaves disappointed, disillusioned.

  144. He came to meet God, to know something about God.

  145. But now he can't get in.

  146. He's been barred.

  147. And somewhere on his return journey, this educated and important man is reading from the prophet Isaiah.

  148. And Philip begins to explain to him.

  149. We're told what he was reading.

  150. Look at verse 32.

  151. The eunuch was reading this passage of scripture, which comes from Isaiah 53.

  152. He was led like sheep to the slaughter.

  153. And as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

  154. In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.

  155. Who can speak of his descendants?

  156. For his life was taken from the earth.

  157. The eunuch asked Philip, tell me please, who is the prophet talking about?

  158. Himself?

  159. Himself?

  160. Or is it someone else?

  161. Then Philip began with that very passage of scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

  162. You see, Isaiah and the Old Testament is all about Jesus.

  163. So what did he explain to them?

  164. What was Philip going to say to him?

  165. Well, we don't have it all there, but we can figure out from what he has explained, or what he has read,

  166. that he told the good news about Jesus.

  167. First, there is freedom from sin's penalty.

  168. Keep your finger in Acts and let's go back to Isaiah chapter 53.

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  169. Go back with me to Isaiah 53.

  170. Isaiah 53 and verse 5.

  171. The Ethiopian is asked the question as he's talked about this sheep who's being taken off for slaughter,

  172. this lamb who's going to be slain, and he's trying to figure out who is this sheep?

  173. Who's this lamb?

  174. Is it the prophet or was he speaking about somebody else?

  175. Well, look at what this passage has to say, because it is speaking about Jesus.

  176. Verse 5.

  177. He was pierced for our transgressions.

  178. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  179. The punishment that brought us peace was upon him.

  180. By his wounds we are healed.

  181. We all like sheep have gone astray.

  182. Each of us turned to his own way.

  183. And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

  184. He, that's Jesus, was oppressed and afflicted.

  185. Yet he did not open his mouth.

  186. He, that's Jesus, was led like a lamb to the slaughter.

  187. And as a sheep before our shearers is silent.

  188. So he did not open his mouth.

  189. You see, Philip was beginning to explain that this is all about Jesus.

  190. And he wanted to make clear to him that, listen, Mr. Ethiopian,

  191. It's not your race, it's not your status that excludes you from God.

  192. The reason why you can't come to God is not because of where you come from or who you are.

  193. It's because of your sin.

  194. And the good news is, Mr. Ethiopian,

  195. Jesus has come to deal with your sin.

  196. He's the one who stands in for us.

  197. He takes the place of us and he receives what we deserve.

  198. He was pierced for our transgressions.

  199. Crushed for my iniquities.

  200. The punishment that brings you peace was upon him.

  201. And so he began to make clear the good news of Jesus.

  202. But that was only half the good news.

  203. The second part of it was this.

  204. That not only was he freed from sin's penalty,

  205. but he was now welcomed into God's family.

  206. Look at Isaiah chapter 53 verse 8.

    Isaiah 53:8

  207. A question has been raised.

  208. This is what he had been reading in his chariot.

  209. It says there,

  210. By oppression and judgment he, that's Jesus, was taken away.

  211. And who can speak of his descendants?

  212. It's a bit of a puzzling question for him

  213. because he's saying,

  214. Well, if Jesus has died,

  215. who is going to be his family?

  216. Who is going to be his descendants?

  217. If Jesus is dead,

  218. what's his offspring going to be?

  219. Well, the answer comes for us in verse 10.

  220. It tells us there that it was the Lord's will

  221. to crush Jesus and to cause him to suffer.

  222. And though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering,

  223. he will see his offspring

  224. and prolong his days.

  225. And the will of the Lord will prosper in his hands.

  226. Do you see what it's saying there?

  227. His offspring, even though Jesus dies,

  228. there will be offspring,

  229. there will be a family.

  230. In other words,

  231. all who trust in Jesus,

  232. they are his true descendants.

  233. They are the ones who become part of God's family.

  234. So Philip is making it crystal clear to Mr. Ethiopian

  235. that look, instead of being shut out,

  236. instead of being excluded,

  237. not only can you be forgiven of all of your sin,

  238. but you too can be welcomed in to God's family.

  239. We don't know,

  240. but I wonder if he turned the page in his scroll,

  241. or rather unrolled it a little bit further,

  242. and came to Isaiah 56.

  243. Have a look at Isaiah 56 and verse 3.

  244. Isaiah 56 and verse 3.

  245. So thinking of the Ethiopian,

  246. a foreigner,

  247. a eunuch,

  248. not allowed near God,

  249. excluded,

  250. but look what it says,

  251. Isaiah 56 verse 3.

    Isaiah 56:3

  252. Let no foreigner who has bound himself to the Lord say,

  253. the Lord will surely exclude me from his people.

  254. And let not any eunuch complain,

  255. I am only a dry tree,

  256. for this is what the Lord says.

  257. Look at verse 5.

  258. To them I will give within my temple and its walls

  259. a memorial and a name,

  260. better than sons and daughters.

  261. I will give them an everlasting name

  262. that will not be cut off.

  263. Verse 7.

  264. These I will bring to my holy mountain

  265. and give them joy in my house of prayer.

  266. Isn't that amazing?

  267. He's saying you're welcomed in.

  268. You can be part,

  269. you will be given a name.

  270. The name of God's family.

  271. But there's also a promise.

  272. This isn't just about Mr. Ethiopian.

  273. There's a promise for us too

  274. in verse 8 of Isaiah 56.

  275. The sovereign Lord declares,

  276. He who gathers the exiles of Israel,

  277. I will gather still others to them

  278. besides those already gathered.

  279. God's invitation

  280. is not just to one or two.

  281. It is to everyone,

  282. regardless of their race,

  283. religion, status or their past.

  284. It is open to members of your family,

  285. open to your colleagues at work

  286. and your friends.

  287. Listen to this from Philippe's testimony.

  288. He said this,

  289. I believe that Jesus is the Lord and Saviour,

  290. the Son of God,

  291. who dies for our sins on the cross.

  292. And all of this would lead to,

  293. he says,

  294. new life

  295. and joining the Christian family.

  296. The same experience the Ethiopian had,

  297. Philippe has had.

  298. Mimi puts it like this,

  299. I see that on the cross,

  300. Jesus paid for my sins

  301. and he is also giving me

  302. a loving church family.

  303. This is a wonderful invitation

  304. to be forgiven

  305. and welcomed in

  306. to God's family.

  307. So there's God's plan,

  308. his invitation,

  309. but there's also our responsibility

  310. in terms of people becoming Christians.

  311. God plans all these things out,

  312. but we have an important part

  313. to play in it.

  314. The risen Lord Jesus

  315. made it very clear

  316. that they would receive power,

  317. that they would be witnesses

  318. in Jerusalem,

  319. Judea, Samaria

  320. and to the ends of the earth.

  321. And that doesn't mean

  322. we sit back and do nothing.

  323. In this case,

  324. if you go back to Acts chapter 8,

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  325. Philippe responds with obedience.

  326. It wasn't just a case of,

  327. oh well God's going to do it.

  328. No, he was fully involved

  329. in what God was going to do.

  330. So in Acts chapter 8,

    Acts 8:26

  331. verse 26,

  332. it says,

  333. the angel of the Lord

  334. said to Philippe,

  335. go.

  336. And so Philippe went.

  337. In verse 29,

  338. it says,

  339. the Spirit told Philippe,

  340. go to that chariot.

  341. And Philippe went.

  342. And in verse 35,

  343. Philippe began

  344. with the very passage of Scripture

  345. and told him the good news

  346. about Jesus.

  347. He obeyed.

  348. He followed.

  349. And it reminds us

  350. that for each one of us,

  351. if we are Christians,

  352. our primary purpose

  353. is to be people

  354. who pass on the good news.

  355. That's why God has us

  356. where we are.

  357. God's placed us

  358. in our particular family,

  359. in our sphere of friends,

  360. in the place that we work,

  361. so that we can share

  362. with others.

  363. At the beginning of February,

  364. on Wednesdays,

  365. we're going to be looking at

  366. one life.

  367. What's it all about?

  368. Christianity Explored.

  369. This is a great opportunity

  370. to do exactly

  371. what Philip did.

  372. To invite someone

  373. to say,

  374. let me explain to you,

  375. or rather,

  376. come along

  377. and listen

  378. and watch,

  379. discuss,

  380. ask questions,

  381. if you have any,

  382. about what the good news

  383. of Jesus is.

  384. It's a great opportunity

  385. and I encourage us all

  386. to pass them

  387. to our friends.

  388. Ask God to give you

  389. the courage.

  390. I know we'll be quaking,

  391. we'll be wondering

  392. what they're going to say.

  393. But you know what?

  394. All they can say is no.

  395. Philippe's niece

  396. and Mimi's cousin

  397. took their responsibility

  398. seriously,

  399. didn't they?

  400. They simply explained

  401. the good news

  402. to Philippe

  403. and to Mimi

  404. and invited them

  405. to learn more

  406. about Jesus.

  407. They took their

  408. responsibility seriously.

  409. and passed on

  410. the good news.

  411. And we are called

  412. to do exactly the same

  413. just as Philip did

  414. in this story.

  415. And fourth,

  416. how do people

  417. become Christians?

  418. Well, we've got

  419. God's great big

  420. gospel plan.

  421. He's made that

  422. invitation known

  423. where there's

  424. our responsibility

  425. in passing it on.

  426. But then there's

  427. our response

  428. to the gospel.

  429. If people are going

  430. to be changed

  431. by the gospel,

  432. we've got to know

  433. what the right

  434. response is.

  435. And having heard

  436. the good news

  437. from Philip,

  438. look what the

  439. Ethiopian does.

  440. Verse 36

  441. of Acts chapter 8,

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  442. As they travelled

  443. along the road,

  444. they came to some water

  445. and the eunuch said,

  446. look,

  447. here is water.

  448. Why shouldn't I

  449. be baptised?

  450. And he gave orders

  451. to stop the chariot.

  452. Then both Philip

  453. and the eunuch

  454. went down

  455. into the water

  456. and Philip

  457. baptised him.

  458. That must have

  459. been a wonderful day.

  460. And we've got

  461. to be very clear

  462. that baptism

  463. itself doesn't

  464. make anybody

  465. a Christian.

  466. So what's its purpose?

  467. Why did the

  468. Ethiopian get

  469. baptised?

  470. Why are Philip

  471. and Mimi

  472. getting baptised

  473. today?

  474. Well,

  475. it's very closely

  476. connected to

  477. the story,

  478. the good news

  479. about Jesus.

  480. two simple things.

  481. First,

  482. baptism is a sign

  483. that Jesus

  484. sets us free

  485. from sin's

  486. penalty.

  487. As Philip

  488. and Mimi

  489. very shortly

  490. will get

  491. baptised

  492. as they go

  493. down into

  494. the water,

  495. they are

  496. identifying

  497. with the

  498. death of

  499. Jesus.

  500. They are

  501. saying publicly

  502. and clearly

  503. to us all

  504. that Jesus

  505. has taken

  506. my sin

  507. and that

  508. he suffers

  509. the judgment

  510. and the punishment

  511. that I deserve.

  512. As they go

  513. down into

  514. the water,

  515. they are

  516. saying,

  517. Jesus died

  518. for me.

  519. I can't

  520. deal with

  521. my sin,

  522. but Jesus

  523. can.

  524. And when

  525. they come

  526. out of the

  527. water,

  528. they are

  529. identifying

  530. with Jesus'

  531. resurrection.

  532. they are

  533. saying that

  534. the life

  535. that Jesus

  536. has given

  537. is their

  538. life to

  539. now live

  540. with

  541. forevermore.

  542. So committing

  543. yourself to

  544. being baptised

  545. is saying,

  546. I trust in

  547. Jesus.

  548. I trust that

  549. he sets me

  550. free from

  551. sin's penalty.

  552. So first,

  553. it's a sign.

  554. And second,

  555. baptism is a

  556. seal.

  557. baptism.

  558. It's this

  559. mark upon

  560. us that

  561. we have

  562. been welcomed

  563. and that

  564. we belong

  565. to God's

  566. family and

  567. that he

  568. keeps us

  569. in his

  570. family.

  571. Just as

  572. through our

  573. faith we

  574. are committing

  575. ourselves to

  576. Jesus,

  577. Jesus is

  578. committing

  579. himself to

  580. us.

  581. Our

  582. baptism is

  583. a recognition

  584. of God's

  585. approval to

  586. us, not

  587. because of

  588. what we

  589. do, but

  590. because of

  591. what Jesus

  592. has done

  593. for us.

  594. So

  595. baptism is

  596. saying very

  597. clearly, I

  598. belong to

  599. Jesus, I'm

  600. a part of

  601. his family

  602. and that

  603. is sealed

  604. upon us.

  605. That is,

  606. we belong

  607. to him, part

  608. of his family

  609. forever and

  610. forever.

  611. And that's

  612. the only right

  613. response to

  614. the gospel.

  615. And some

  616. of you here

  617. may say,

  618. I'm a

  619. Christian,

  620. I'm a

  621. follower of

  622. Jesus,

  623. Jesus, but

  624. you're not

  625. yet

  626. baptized.

  627. Well, let

  628. me ask the

  629. question, why

  630. are you not

  631. baptized?

  632. It's what

  633. Jesus has

  634. commanded and

  635. it's that

  636. visible

  637. demonstration

  638. that yes, I

  639. do trust and

  640. yes, I do

  641. belong.

  642. It makes that

  643. statement

  644. clarifying and

  645. letting everybody

  646. know that

  647. you are with

  648. Jesus.

  649. Jesus.

  650. Look at

  651. verse 39.

  652. When they

  653. came up out

  654. of the water,

  655. the spirit of

  656. the Lord

  657. suddenly took

  658. Philip away

  659. and the eunuch

  660. didn't see him

  661. again but went

  662. on his way

  663. rejoicing.

  664. He had

  665. become a

  666. Christian.

  667. And this,

  668. very simply,

  669. is how all

  670. people become

  671. believers.

  672. God brings

  673. believers and

  674. unbelievers

  675. together in

  676. his gospel

  677. plan.

  678. He gives

  679. that invitation

  680. to come and

  681. say, receive

  682. this life that

  683. I have to

  684. give.

  685. Come and

  686. hear this

  687. good news.

  688. And in

  689. response, be

  690. baptized.

  691. Philip and

  692. Mimi know

  693. that for sure.

  694. I hope you

  695. know that for

  696. sure.

  697. And maybe

  698. there's the

  699. question too

  700. about your

  701. friends or

  702. your family or

  703. your work

  704. colleague.

  705. Are they

  706. Christians?

  707. And what

  708. part am I

  709. going to

  710. play in

  711. their life so

  712. that they

  713. too become

  714. like the

  715. Ethiopian and

  716. Philip and

  717. Mimi?

  718. Let's pray

  719. together.

  720. together.

  721. Our Father

  722. God, we

  723. thank you so

  724. much for

  725. this great

  726. story of

  727. the way in

  728. which you

  729. bring people

  730. together so

  731. that they

  732. have new

  733. life.

  734. We celebrate

  735. and give

  736. thanks today

  737. for the way

  738. in which you

  739. have brought

  740. Philip and

  741. Mimi to

  742. faith in

  743. Christ.

  744. We thank

  745. you for

  746. his niece

  747. and Mimi's

  748. cousin for

  749. taking that

  750. step of

  751. sharing the

  752. good news

  753. with them

  754. and we

  755. thank you

  756. Father that

  757. through your

  758. work that

  759. you have

  760. caused them

  761. to believe

  762. also.

  763. We pray

  764. that we

  765. ourselves would

  766. be people

  767. wherever we

  768. are and

  769. wherever we

  770. go that

  771. you would

  772. open up

  773. opportunities

  774. for us

  775. as we

  776. travel,

  777. as we

  778. study or

  779. as we

  780. work to

  781. share the

  782. good news.

  783. Give us

  784. courage,

  785. simply one

  786. person who

  787. we could

  788. invite to

  789. Christianity

  790. Explored.

  791. Give us a

  792. door that

  793. opens to

  794. explain the

  795. good news.

  796. Father help

  797. us we pray

  798. in Jesus

  799. name.

  800. Amen.

  801. Amen.
