  1. So John chapter 3, starting at verse 19 to 21.

    John 3 chapter mention

  2. This is the verdict. Light has come into the world, but men love darkness instead of light, because their deeds are evil.

  3. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

  4. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.

  5. And if you turn to 1 John chapter 1, starting at verse 5.

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  6. Oh yeah, that's page 1225.

  7. This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you.

  8. God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.

  9. If we claim to have fellowship with him, yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.

  10. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son purifies us from all sin.

  11. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

  12. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

  13. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar, and his word has no place in our lives.

  14. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.

  15. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defence, Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

  16. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for the sins of the whole world.

  17. Thanks very much, Dan.

  18. Please keep your Bibles open at 1 John.

  19. There is a sheet being passed around with pens, which you can follow along to take notes if you want one.

  20. Just indicate to Ethan.

  21. We started a new series just last week.

  22. You can follow them all online if you miss any.

  23. So 1 John, chapter 1, verse 5, and to chapter 2, verse 2.

    1 John 1:5

  24. It's a very, very practical letter, helping us to know how to live the Christian life.

  25. Well, let's ask God for his help as we look at his word together.

  26. Our Father God, we thank you for your love.

  27. And we thank you for your word to us, which is an expression of your love to us.

  28. We pray that as we read it together, as we study together,

  29. that you would speak into our lives in such a way that we see what it is to live in right relationship with you.

  30. Help us to identify the things that hinder our relationship with you.

  31. And help us to put into practice the things that will restore our relationship with you.

  32. Be gracious to us, Father, we pray.

  33. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  34. So we start with a very heart-searching question.

  35. How is your fellowship with God?

  36. Would you say it's in the red hot zone?

  37. Or is it in the blue cold zone?

  38. Where would you place yourself on that scale?

  39. Or over the last week or month, would you say you've been taking steps towards the red zone?

  40. Or have you been moving towards the cold zone?

  41. Perhaps, like me, you find that it fluctuates.

  42. It's bouncing from one end to the other.

  43. Hot one week, cold the next.

  44. Well, remember, we have all been invited into fellowship with God.

  45. Look at verse 3 of chapter 1.

  46. This is John writing on behalf of the apostles.

  47. He says,

  48. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard.

  49. So they saw Jesus and they heard his message.

  50. So we proclaim to you what we've seen and heard.

  51. So that you also may have fellowship with us.

  52. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

  53. So here John is inviting people like you and me to share in the deep, intimate relationship and partnership with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

  54. So what the Father shares with the Son and what the Son shares with the Father, we too can participate in that love.

  55. He says to us in verse 4, we write all of this.

  56. We write this invitation into this fellowship to make our or your joy complete.

  57. Living in fellowship with God is where we are fully satisfied.

  58. This is where we find our joy.

  59. Now this morning we're going to see how we can enjoy this fellowship every day.

  60. How we can enjoy it the way God intends us to.

  61. So there's two big ideas we're going to look at this morning.

  62. The first is what hinders and damages our fellowship with God.

  63. And the second is this, what restores and renews our fellowship with God.

  64. So the first one is going to be quite hard.

  65. Not hard to understand, but hard because it takes a look at our hearts.

  66. So what is it that hinders and damages our fellowship?

  67. And then secondly, what restores and renews our fellowship?

  68. So let's look at these two big ideas together.

  69. First, sin hinders and damages our fellowship with God.

  70. Look at verse 5.

  71. This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you.

  72. God is light.

  73. In him there is no darkness at all.

  74. Followers of Lord of the Rings, and I'm sure most of you have seen them,

  75. will know that light and darkness are really important themes.

  76. You've got those who represent light, like Gandalf, and he's good and he's pure.

  77. And then there are those who are evil and wicked, like Sauron, and they're described as being on the dark side.

  78. So we've got this light and darkness theme.

  79. And it's the same idea in biblical language.

  80. So in verse 5 we're told that God is light.

  81. That means he's full of goodness.

  82. He's full of justice and purity.

  83. There's no darkness in God.

  84. There's no evil.

  85. There's no hate.

  86. There's no impurity.

  87. In other words, light and darkness are incompatible.

  88. You can't mix light and darkness together.

  89. Psalm 5 tells us that you are not a God who takes pleasure in evil.

  90. With you, the wicked cannot dwell.

  91. The arrogant cannot stand in your presence.

  92. You see, you can't have light and darkness together.

  93. Now, just as light and darkness are incompatible,

  94. so a life of sin and a life of fellowship is incompatible.

  95. In other words, he's building us towards a big theme, which is this.

  96. We can't mess about with sin and at the same time enjoy fellowship with God.

  97. Just as you can't mix light and darkness,

  98. so you can't mix a life of sin and a life of fellowship.

  99. They just don't go together.

  100. Sin is serious.

  101. It hinders and damages our fellowship with God.

  102. That's the big theme of the rest of this chapter and into chapter 2.

  103. We tend to minimise it.

  104. We don't think it really matters.

  105. So we hide it and we excuse it and we ignore it.

  106. But sin drags us out of the red hot zone

  107. and it pulls us into the blue cold zone.

  108. So let's see how this is true.

  109. Two things.

  110. First, claiming to have fellowship.

  111. Look at verse 6.

  112. He says this,

  113. If we claim to have fellowship with him,

  114. yet walk in the darkness,

  115. we lie and do not live by the truth.

  116. So if we say that we have fellowship with God,

  117. but yet we mess about with sin,

  118. then we're just living a lie.

  119. He's saying we don't live by the truth.

  120. Now remember,

  121. he's writing here to people who are Christians.

  122. Have a look at chapter 2, verse 21.

  123. Chapter 2, verse 21.

  124. He says there,

  125. I do not write to you because you do not know the truth,

  126. but because you do know it

  127. and because no lie comes from the truth.

  128. So he's writing to the people,

  129. he's writing to us,

  130. he's saying you know what the truth is.

  131. You know who the truth is.

  132. You know what it is to love Christ.

  133. You know what it is to love people.

  134. But here's the big problem.

  135. You're claiming to be in fellowship with God

  136. when in reality you're walking about in darkness.

  137. It's the complete opposite of true fellowship.

  138. Look at chapter 1, verse 7.

  139. If we walk in the light as he is in the light,

  140. we have fellowship with one another

  141. and the blood of Jesus, his son,

  142. purifies us from all sin.

  143. You see here in verse 7,

  144. we have the picture of one who doesn't hide from the truth.

  145. They're not pretending.

  146. They're not living a lie.

  147. They walk in the light.

  148. In other words,

  149. their desire is to let God shine his spotlight,

  150. to shine his light by the Holy Spirit

  151. into their lives,

  152. to show them where their sin is

  153. so that they can deal with it

  154. and put things right

  155. so that fellowship with God is restored.

  156. Here's the people who walk in the light.

  157. They crave openness and honesty before God.

  158. But he's saying,

  159. what you're doing is walking in the darkness.

  160. You're hiding.

  161. You see, our fellowship with God works on two levels.

  162. I want us to get this clear in our minds.

  163. There's a legal aspect and a personal aspect.

  164. So when we trust in Christ,

  165. we enter into a legal relationship or fellowship with God.

  166. That means it can't be broken by our sin.

  167. So if I mess up, if I fail,

  168. my relationship with God is intact.

  169. It's legally binding.

  170. There's a contract on that relationship

  171. that can't be broken because God is committed to it.

  172. However, when I sin or when we sin,

  173. the personal aspect of the relationship is damaged.

  174. So let me try and illustrate this for us

  175. to get it into our minds.

  176. When Kirsty and I got married,

  177. we entered into a legal relationship.

  178. So no matter what we say,

  179. no matter what we do,

  180. we remain legally married.

  181. We can fall out,

  182. we can have an argument,

  183. but we've got a contract that says,

  184. we're married.

  185. We're still in that relationship.

  186. But here's the point.

  187. If I'm unkind,

  188. if I say something that upsets her,

  189. it deeply affects the personal relationship.

  190. And the relationship is damaged.

  191. The joy and the intimacy of that relationship is removed.

  192. It's broken.

  193. And so it is in the same way.

  194. God still legally loves us.

  195. He is committed to us.

  196. He is bound to us even when we sin.

  197. But here's the problem.

  198. The personal joy of that relationship is damaged.

  199. Every time I fail and fall,

  200. every time I walk in darkness,

  201. the relationship with God,

  202. that personal, deep, intimate relationship,

  203. is damaged.

  204. You see, messing about with sin

  205. damages our fellowship with God.

  206. It is serious.

  207. Of course, it's not just claiming to have fellowship.

  208. There's another problem.

  209. There's claiming to be without sin.

  210. Look at verse 8.

  211. If we claim to be without sin,

  212. we deceive ourselves,

  213. and the truth is not in us.

  214. Messing about with sin

  215. ultimately leads to self-deception.

  216. Do you see what it says in verse 8?

  217. It says we deceive ourselves.

  218. The tragedy is

  219. we can get to the point in our life

  220. where we can't even see the damage

  221. sin is causing to our own lives.

  222. We're so much in the darkness

  223. that we cannot see

  224. what it is doing

  225. to our relationship with God.

  226. We used to joke when we were younger

  227. about our granny

  228. that she had asbestos hands.

  229. Basically, she could just take anything

  230. that was roasting hot out of the oven

  231. with her bare hands.

  232. She never used a cloth.

  233. She could handle hot plates.

  234. Not a problem.

  235. But there was a problem.

  236. Because her hands were very marked and scarred.

  237. There were burns all over them.

  238. And over time,

  239. her hands had become insensitive

  240. to the heat.

  241. And it caused terrible damage.

  242. And in the same way,

  243. we can mess about with sin so much

  244. that it gets to the point

  245. where we become insensitive to it.

  246. We're not even aware

  247. of the effects that it has.

  248. But over time,

  249. it's causing untold damage

  250. to our lives

  251. in our relationship with God.

  252. One of the ways it can affect us

  253. is our relationship

  254. with other people.

  255. Look back at verse 7.

  256. Do you see what it says there

  257. at the beginning?

  258. It says,

  259. if we walk in the light

  260. as he is in the light,

  261. we have fellowship

  262. with one another.

  263. You see,

  264. fellowship with God

  265. can't be separated

  266. from fellowship

  267. with other people.

  268. If our fellowship

  269. with God is damaged,

  270. then our fellowship

  271. with other people

  272. is damaged.

  273. So,

  274. let me ask us all

  275. another question.

  276. What is our relationship

  277. with each other

  278. actually like?

  279. If you're married here

  280. this morning,

  281. how is your relationship

  282. to your wife

  283. or your husband?

  284. Is it cold?

  285. Is it broken?

  286. How are you relating

  287. to one another?

  288. Or how are your relationships

  289. with people in the church?

  290. Are they on healthy terms?

  291. Are you getting on

  292. with people?

  293. Because broken

  294. and damaged relationships

  295. can be a clear sign

  296. of claiming to be

  297. without sin.

  298. We've got to the point

  299. where we've deceived ourselves,

  300. where we become

  301. completely insensitive

  302. to what's going on.

  303. We're not even aware

  304. of damaged relationships.

  305. Look at verse 10.

  306. If we claim

  307. we have not sinned,

  308. we make him,

  309. that is God,

  310. out to be a liar

  311. and his word

  312. has no place

  313. in our lives.

  314. Instead of owning up

  315. to our sin,

  316. we excuse it,

  317. we ignore it

  318. and we hide it.

  319. We brush it

  320. underneath the carpet.

  321. We push back

  322. against God's

  323. gentle conviction

  324. through his word

  325. and we refuse

  326. the diagnosis

  327. of our hearts.

  328. Claiming to be

  329. in fellowship

  330. with God

  331. and at the same time

  332. messing about

  333. with sin

  334. ultimately damages

  335. and hinders

  336. our fellowship

  337. with God.

  338. It robs us

  339. of our joy.

  340. That is the danger.

  341. That is the seriousness

  342. of what it can do

  343. to us.

  344. So how can

  345. our joy

  346. be made complete?

  347. What we've just

  348. looked at

  349. is hard and difficult

  350. but it does

  351. because it requires

  352. an inward looking

  353. at our own hearts.

  354. So how can it

  355. be restored?

  356. How can we know

  357. deep,

  358. intimate joy

  359. with the Father?

  360. Well second,

  361. Christ restores

  362. and renews

  363. our fellowship

  364. with God.

  365. We often think

  366. of repentance

  367. and faith

  368. as something

  369. we do

  370. before we

  371. become a Christian.

  372. So I repent

  373. of my sins

  374. and I put

  375. my faith

  376. in Jesus.

  377. That's true.

  378. We all need

  379. to do that.

  380. But just as we

  381. start the Christian

  382. life with repentance

  383. and faith,

  384. we must continue

  385. with repentance

  386. and faith.

  387. We don't just do it

  388. once and then

  389. leave it there

  390. and tick that box.

  391. We continue

  392. with repentance

  393. and faith

  394. every single day.

  395. So let's look

  396. at each of those

  397. aspects

  398. in these remaining

  399. verses.

  400. First,

  401. repentance,

  402. which is ongoing

  403. dealing with sin.

  404. Look at verse 9.

  405. If we confess

  406. our sins,

  407. he is faithful

  408. and just

  409. and will forgive

  410. us our sins

  411. and purify

  412. us from

  413. all unrighteousness.

  414. You see,

  415. confession

  416. or repentance

  417. is vital

  418. if we are to

  419. enjoy

  420. fellowship

  421. with God.

  422. But we've got

  423. to be clear

  424. what true

  425. repentance

  426. is.

  427. Sometimes

  428. we can be

  429. remorseful,

  430. but that's

  431. not repentance.

  432. Remorseful

  433. means we regret

  434. that we've done

  435. something wrong

  436. because of the

  437. consequences it

  438. has to my life.

  439. So the thief

  440. will be remorseful

  441. because he's

  442. been caught.

  443. He's got money

  444. in his pocket

  445. that he shouldn't

  446. do and he ends

  447. up in prison

  448. and he's saying

  449. I wish I hadn't

  450. done that.

  451. He's only sorry

  452. because he's been

  453. caught and he's

  454. being punished.

  455. That's remorseful.

  456. Being repentant

  457. is completely

  458. different.

  459. Repentant means

  460. we seek a

  461. genuine heart

  462. change

  463. regardless

  464. of the

  465. consequences

  466. to my life.

  467. So the thief

  468. who is repentant

  469. will face up

  470. to the seriousness

  471. of his crime.

  472. He will accept

  473. the consequences.

  474. He will accept

  475. what's going to

  476. happen because

  477. he wants to

  478. change his life

  479. and change the

  480. ways.

  481. He confesses

  482. because he doesn't

  483. want to do the

  484. same thing again.

  485. Now there's two

  486. people who are

  487. very helpful

  488. examples for this

  489. and you know

  490. them very well.

  491. Judas and Peter.

  492. Both Judas

  493. and Peter

  494. acted in

  495. denial and

  496. betrayal.

  497. Both of them

  498. had sinned.

  499. Judas though

  500. was remorseful.

  501. He was remorseful

  502. because he was

  503. found out

  504. and he ran away

  505. and what did he do?

  506. He hung himself

  507. because remorse

  508. leads to despair.

  509. There's no way

  510. out.

  511. Peter on the

  512. other hand

  513. was repentant

  514. because he knew

  515. he had done

  516. something wrong.

  517. He knew he had

  518. to go back to

  519. Jesus and that

  520. relationship was

  521. restored and it

  522. led to a joyful

  523. relationship again.

  524. So we've got to

  525. be right about

  526. being remorseful

  527. or being repentant.

  528. And look what

  529. happens when we

  530. are genuinely

  531. repentant.

  532. Again look at

  533. verse 9.

  534. He will forgive

  535. us our sins

  536. and purify us

  537. from all

  538. unrighteousness.

  539. Here's the

  540. result.

  541. We are forgiven.

  542. That means God

  543. will no longer

  544. hold that sin

  545. against us.

  546. It's not going

  547. to be thrown

  548. back in our

  549. face.

  550. It's cancelled.

  551. It's paid for.

  552. It's dealt

  553. with.

  554. But not only

  555. is there

  556. forgiveness,

  557. he also

  558. purifies us.

  559. That means God

  560. will make us

  561. clean.

  562. He will make us

  563. pure.

  564. What defiled us

  565. in the first

  566. place has been

  567. removed.

  568. It's washed

  569. away.

  570. It's wiped

  571. clean.

  572. It's all

  573. gone.

  574. And it all

  575. leads to

  576. restored

  577. fellowship.

  578. Genuine

  579. repentance

  580. means

  581. restored

  582. fellowship.

  583. Because I

  584. own my

  585. sin.

  586. Because I

  587. seek genuine

  588. heart change.

  589. Because I'm

  590. willing to

  591. deal with my

  592. sinful behaviour.

  593. Because I want

  594. to walk in the

  595. light and let

  596. God show me

  597. up for what I

  598. am and what I

  599. need to get

  600. right.

  601. I can now

  602. enjoy

  603. fellowship with

  604. God.

  605. We come to

  606. a Father

  607. who longs

  608. to forgive

  609. us.

  610. Who longs

  611. to purify

  612. us so that

  613. we can

  614. enjoy him.

  615. So there

  616. must be

  617. repentance.

  618. And there

  619. must also

  620. be faith.

  621. Faith which

  622. is ongoing

  623. trust in

  624. Jesus Christ.

  625. Look at

  626. chapter 2

  627. verse 1.

  628. My dear

  629. children,

  630. this is the

  631. heartache

  632. of a writer

  633. who longs

  634. for his

  635. people to

  636. be in

  637. right

  638. relationship

  639. with God.

  640. My dear

  641. children,

  642. I write

  643. this to

  644. you so

  645. that you

  646. will not

  647. sin.

  648. I want

  649. you to

  650. experience a

  651. life that

  652. is not

  653. damaged or

  654. hindered by

  655. your sinful

  656. behaviour.

  657. I want

  658. you to

  659. enjoy this

  660. deep,

  661. intimate

  662. relationship

  663. with God.

  664. I want

  665. you to

  666. experience it

  667. in its

  668. fullness.

  669. So he

  670. says I

  671. write this

  672. to you so

  673. that you

  674. will not

  675. sin.

  676. But if

  677. anybody

  678. does

  679. sin,

  680. because he

  681. knows we

  682. all do

  683. and we

  684. all mess

  685. up and

  686. fail.

  687. So he's

  688. saying to

  689. us,

  690. look,

  691. as you

  692. go along

  693. your life,

  694. your

  695. relationship

  696. with God,

  697. when you

  698. sin,

  699. here's what

  700. I want you

  701. to see.

  702. This is

  703. where I

  704. want you

  705. to look.

  706. I want

  707. you to

  708. look at

  709. two

  710. things.

  711. First,

  712. Jesus

  713. is our

  714. defence.

  715. I

  716. write this

  717. to you

  718. so that

  719. you will

  720. not

  721. sin.

  722. But if

  723. anybody

  724. does

  725. sin,

  726. we have

  727. one who

  728. speaks to

  729. the Father

  730. in our

  731. defence,

  732. Jesus

  733. Christ,

  734. the

  735. righteous

  736. one.

  737. Have

  738. you got

  739. the picture

  740. that we

  741. have there?

  742. It's an

  743. amazing

  744. picture.

  745. Because when

  746. we sin

  747. and our

  748. fellowship is

  749. damaged,

  750. Jesus

  751. immediately

  752. steps in

  753. to speak

  754. up on

  755. our

  756. behalf.

  757. Jesus

  758. as our

  759. defender,

  760. and we've

  761. got to get

  762. this picture

  763. right again,

  764. he's not

  765. pleading

  766. with a

  767. reluctant

  768. father who

  769. is unwilling

  770. to forgive.

  771. He does

  772. not have to

  773. try and

  774. convince

  775. God or

  776. cajole

  777. God to

  778. be merciful

  779. or try

  780. and trick

  781. God to

  782. be nice

  783. towards

  784. us.

  785. No,

  786. Jesus

  787. simply

  788. reminds

  789. the

  790. father of

  791. what they

  792. have

  793. achieved

  794. together,

  795. that the

  796. sin has

  797. been paid

  798. for,

  799. that they

  800. are forgiven,

  801. that they

  802. are clean,

  803. that they

  804. belong to

  805. the father

  806. and the

  807. son and

  808. they share

  809. in fellowship

  810. and Jesus

  811. brings all

  812. of that

  813. before the

  814. father and

  815. says,

  816. we can

  817. forgive.

  818. I am the

  819. one who

  820. stands in

  821. defence of

  822. you.

  823. Jesus

  824. guarantees

  825. and assures

  826. us of

  827. our acceptance

  828. so in

  829. faith,

  830. when we

  831. fall,

  832. we look

  833. to Jesus

  834. as our

  835. defender.

  836. But not

  837. only that,

  838. we look

  839. to Jesus

  840. as our

  841. sacrifice.

  842. Verse 2,

  843. he is the

  844. atoning

  845. sacrifice

  846. for our

  847. sins and

  848. not only

  849. for ours

  850. but also

  851. for the

  852. sins of

  853. the whole

  854. world.

  855. God.

  856. You see,

  857. God doesn't

  858. just ignore

  859. our sin.

  860. He doesn't

  861. go, oh,

  862. we'll just

  863. forgive that

  864. and it

  865. doesn't

  866. matter

  867. anymore.

  868. He can

  869. forgive it

  870. because he

  871. has taken

  872. it seriously.

  873. He has

  874. dealt with

  875. our sin

  876. through his

  877. son,

  878. Jesus Christ.

  879. When Jesus

  880. died on the

  881. cross, as we

  882. were singing

  883. about earlier,

  884. atonement

  885. took place.

  886. That's the

  887. word that we

  888. have here in

  889. verse 2, a

  890. sacrifice of

  891. atonement.

  892. And that

  893. simply means

  894. two things.

  895. First, Jesus

  896. takes our

  897. guilt on

  898. himself.

  899. He becomes

  900. our sin

  901. for us.

  902. So all of

  903. my guilt,

  904. all of my

  905. shame, all

  906. of my sin

  907. is removed

  908. from me

  909. and placed

  910. upon Jesus.

  911. That's the

  912. first step.

  913. And the

  914. second step

  915. is this,

  916. Jesus now

  917. absorbs God's

  918. wrath on

  919. himself for

  920. me.

  921. He bears

  922. the punishment

  923. for me.

  924. So he

  925. removes my

  926. guilt and

  927. he removes

  928. or deflects

  929. the wrath of

  930. God from

  931. me onto

  932. his own

  933. son.

  934. And that's

  935. what we

  936. mean when

  937. we say

  938. Jesus is

  939. our atoning

  940. sacrifice.

  941. So each

  942. day, every

  943. time we

  944. fail and

  945. fall, we

  946. look in

  947. trust to

  948. Jesus Christ.

  949. We depend

  950. not on our

  951. own performance,

  952. but on the

  953. perfect performance

  954. of Jesus

  955. Christ, our

  956. defence and

  957. our sacrifice.

  958. And all of

  959. that leads

  960. to renewed

  961. fellowship.

  962. The results

  963. of genuine

  964. faith is

  965. renewed

  966. fellowship

  967. with God.

  968. Because I

  969. look to

  970. Jesus,

  971. because I

  972. dare not

  973. trust in

  974. myself,

  975. because I

  976. turn to

  977. Christ when I

  978. see my

  979. sin.

  980. Fellowship

  981. with God

  982. is renewed.

  983. Faith is

  984. the means

  985. by which I

  986. can enjoy

  987. God.

  988. I can

  989. enjoy his

  990. presence.

  991. I can

  992. enjoy

  993. fellowship

  994. without any

  995. fear of

  996. judgment or

  997. punishment

  998. whatsoever.

  999. So where

  1000. are you

  1001. in your

  1002. fellowship with

  1003. God?

  1004. Are you in

  1005. the red

  1006. hot zone?

  1007. or are you

  1008. in the

  1009. cold blue

  1010. zone?

  1011. Which

  1012. direction are

  1013. you travelling?

  1014. Are you

  1015. walking in

  1016. darkness and

  1017. avoiding sin?

  1018. Or are you

  1019. walking in the

  1020. light and

  1021. letting God

  1022. deal with it

  1023. as it should

  1024. be?

  1025. As we

  1026. finish, let

  1027. me just

  1028. close with an

  1029. illustration.

  1030. fellowship with

  1031. God is

  1032. like horse

  1033. riding.

  1034. Have any

  1035. of you ever

  1036. gone horse

  1037. riding?

  1038. I remember

  1039. my very first

  1040. experience.

  1041. The horse

  1042. went that

  1043. way, turned

  1044. a corner and

  1045. I kept

  1046. going.

  1047. The question

  1048. is, it's

  1049. not if you

  1050. fall off, but

  1051. when you

  1052. fall off.

  1053. And when

  1054. we fall

  1055. off the

  1056. horse, we

  1057. don't just

  1058. stay down, we

  1059. get up again and

1060. we get back on and

  1061. we keep on

  1062. going.

  1063. Now when we

  1064. fall and fail in

  1065. our fellowship with

  1066. God, when it's

  1067. hindered and

  1068. broken and we

  1069. sense that lack

  1070. of joy, we

  1071. don't just stay

  1072. down, we get

  1073. back up again.

  1074. And here's how

  1075. we get back up

  1076. again.

  1077. We do it by

  1078. repenting of

  1079. our sin.

  1080. forgive me

  1081. Father, for I

  1082. have fallen

  1083. again, but I

  1084. do not want to

  1085. fall again.

  1086. Forgive me, I

  1087. do not want to

  1088. fall again.

  1089. We do it by

  1090. repenting and

  1091. we do it by

  1092. faith in Jesus

  1093. Christ.

  1094. We look to

  1095. him and say, I

  1096. cannot do this

  1097. alone.

  1098. I dare not

  1099. trust in my

  1100. own self, but

  1101. I trust in

  1102. you, my

  1103. defender, my

  1104. sacrifice,

  1105. to hold me

  1106. and keep me.

  1107. So let me

  1108. say this to

  1109. us all.

  1110. Get up,

  1111. fallen

  1112. Christian.

  1113. Ride again

  1114. and enjoy

  1115. your fellowship

  1116. with God.

  1117. Let's pray.

  1118. Let's pray.

  1119. Let's pray.

  1120. Let's pray.

  1121. Let's pray.

  1122. Father, it is

  1123. our desire

  1124. always

  1125. to be in

  1126. that place

  1127. where

  1128. we enjoy

  1129. fellowship with

  1130. you,

  1131. unhindered,

  1132. undamaged,

  1133. to delight in

  1134. you,

  1135. to have no

  1136. fear.

  1137. And yet,

  1138. Father, we

  1139. confess

  1140. there are

  1141. things we

  1142. do and

  1143. say.

  1144. There are

  1145. actions that

  1146. we get

  1147. involved in

  1148. that hinder

  1149. and break

  1150. and damage

  1151. that relationship.

  1152. so, Father,

  1153. we repent

  1154. of them.

  1155. We come to

  1156. you afresh

  1157. and we

  1158. say,

  1159. I've done

  1160. it again,

  1161. but help me

  1162. not to do

  1163. it again.

  1164. Lord Jesus,

  1165. we thank you

  1166. that you

  1167. are our

  1168. defender,

  1169. speaking to

  1170. the Father

  1171. in our

  1172. defence.

  1173. Thank you

  1174. that you

  1175. are our

  1176. perfect,

  1177. sufficient,

  1178. and complete

  1179. sacrifice,

  1180. taking the

  1181. blame for

  1182. all that we

  1183. have done

  1184. wrong,

  1185. so that

  1186. we can

  1187. enjoy you

  1188. and know

  1189. you.

  1190. So,

  1191. Father,

  1192. wherever we

  1193. are today,

  1194. help us to

  1195. get back

  1196. up again.

  1197. Help us

  1198. to keep

  1199. on going

  1200. as we

  1201. look only

  1202. to you.

  1203. Bless us

  1204. and fill us

  1205. with your

  1206. joy, we

  1207. pray, in

  1208. Jesus' name.

  1209. Amen.
