  3. And it's a good psalm to prepare us as we come to listen to God's Word.

  4. Let's read Psalm 25 verse 1.

    Psalms 25:1

  5. To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. In you I trust, O my God.

  6. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me.

  7. No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame.

  8. But they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse.

  9. Show me your ways, O Lord.

  10. Teach me your paths.

  11. Guide me in your truth.

  12. And teach me, for you are God my Saviour.

  13. And my hope is in you all day long.

  14. Remember, O Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.

  15. Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways.

  16. According to your love, remember me, for you are good, O Lord.

  17. Good and upright is the Lord.

  18. Therefore, he instructs sinners in his ways.

  19. He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.

  20. All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful for those who keep the demands of his covenant.

  21. For the sake of your name, O Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great.

  22. Who then is the man that fears the Lord?

  23. He will instruct him in the way chosen for him.

  24. He will spend his days in prosperity and his descendants will inherit the land.

  25. The Lord confides in those who fear him.

  26. He makes his covenant known to them.

  27. My eyes are ever on the Lord.

  28. For only he will release my feet from the snare.

  29. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.

  30. The troubles of my heart have multiplied.

  31. Free me from my anguish.

  32. Look upon my affliction and my distress.

  33. And take away all my sins.

  34. See how my enemies have increased and how fiercely they hate me.

  35. Guard my life and rescue me.

  36. Let me not be put to shame.

  37. For I take refuge in you.

  38. May integrity and uprightness protect me.

  39. Because my hope is in you.

  40. Redeem Israel, O God, from all their troubles.

  41. Amen.

  42. Well, I'm going to ask Seth to come up.

  43. And I'm going to pray for you.

  44. Is that okay, Seth?

  45. You don't mind people praying for you?

  46. That's a good start.

  47. So let's pray for Seth.

  48. Father, we thank you for Seth.

  49. And we thank you for him being here this morning.

  50. We pray that you would use him to speak your words to us.

  51. Fill him with the power of your spirit.

  52. And may your spirit be at work within us.

  53. Bringing us on to be the people you call us to be.

  54. May we not leave this building without an encounter with you.

  55. Hearing you.

  56. And knowing you more deeply.

  57. We pray this for your glory.

  58. And for our good.

  59. Amen.

  60. Well, thank you.

  61. It's great to be here.

  62. I like this church.

  63. I like to be here.

  64. It's great to see just a glimpse of what God is doing

  65. on this side of the county.

  66. If you would just turn in your Bibles to Jonah.

  67. I wonder if this could lower a little bit.

  68. I'm not quite as tall.

  69. Okay, not that much.

  70. Right.

  71. Turn your Bibles to Jonah.

  72. If it's the church Bible, it's on page 927.

  73. Now, last Sunday, it was only a week ago

  74. that we were celebrating Easter.

  75. And if we're thinking about Jesus at Easter,

  76. which we should be, not just chocolate eggs and bunnies and things,

  77. then we're probably focusing on his love for us.

  78. We're probably focusing on his power to rise from the dead,

  79. to give us that as well, that we'll be able to do that as well.

  80. But there is something else going on at Easter,

  81. maybe not quite so comfortable,

  82. and that is God's judgment for sin.

  83. Because Easter wouldn't have happened

  84. if Good Friday hadn't happened first.

  85. Jesus rose from the dead,

  86. but before he rose from the dead, he had to die.

  87. And why did he die?

  88. Because of our sin and our rebellion,

  89. it was that serious.

  90. That's what it took.

  91. If there had been an easier way to save us,

  92. then God certainly wouldn't have made Jesus go to the cross.

  93. If all roads lead to heaven, as some people say,

  94. then why on earth would God send Jesus to die

  95. just to open up one more road to the same place?

  96. Jesus prayed in the garden,

  97. if it is possible, let this cup be removed.

  98. But it wasn't removed.

  99. It wasn't possible.

  100. There was no other way to save us

  101. than dying the death that we deserved for our sin.

  102. So yes, God's mercy is incredible.

  103. It's amazing.

  104. And it's to be celebrated.

  105. But we're not going to understand quite how amazing it is

  106. unless we have some idea

  107. of the judgment that we deserved,

  108. of what we're actually being saved from.

  109. But if we only emphasize one or the other,

  110. we can go off either way.

  111. We can emphasize God's mercy so much

  112. that we forget about God's judgment.

  113. Or we can emphasize God's judgment so much

  114. that we forget about his mercy.

  115. We can go off balance quite quickly.

  116. And this morning, we're going to look at a prophet,

  117. Jonah,

  118. who got the balance wrong in both directions

  119. at the same time.

  120. Which might seem a bit crazy, but it's true.

  121. He's an interesting case,

  122. and I think we can learn a bit from him.

  123. So let's look at just the first couple of verses there in Jonah.

  124. It says,

  125. The word of the Lord came to Jonah, son of Amittai.

  126. Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it,

  127. because its wickedness has come up before me.

  128. So right at the beginning here,

  129. we see a command.

  130. God's judgment is to be preached to Nineveh.

  131. So there's God's justice.

  132. Why will God be judging Nineveh?

  133. Well, he says right here, he says,

  134. Their wickedness has come up before me.

  135. They're wicked.

  136. We don't know everything there is to know

  137. about the ancient empire of Assyria,

  138. which Nineveh was the capital of most of the time.

  139. But we know enough,

  140. we've discovered enough to know

  141. that they really were quite wicked.

  142. Even by the standards of the people around them,

  143. they were wicked.

  144. And the standards weren't very high.

  145. They worshipped false gods,

  146. and their gods were capricious and cruel,

  147. and the people that worshipped them became like them.

  148. And it was normal in those days

  149. for war to be very brutal.

  150. I suppose war always is brutal.

  151. But the Assyrians took torture and intimidation

  152. and cruelty to just new highs,

  153. new lows maybe is a better way to say it.

  154. They were horrible.

  155. I won't go into detail.

  156. It's well documented.

  157. If you want to know,

  158. you can find out just exactly how terrible they were.

  159. But we know very well they were wicked.

  160. Now in Jonah's time,

  161. they had already started to build a reputation for themselves.

  162. They'd already started to expand their empire,

  163. taking over some of their neighbors.

  164. They hadn't got to Israel yet,

  165. but they definitely were a threat.

  166. They kind of stalled for the moment

  167. when Jonah was around

  168. because they were having some internal rebellions.

  169. They were having some famines and things.

  170. But Jonah knew that the first chance they got,

  171. they would love to come and conquer Israel

  172. and be just as cruel and merciless

  173. as they had been to everyone else.

  174. So he knows what's going on here.

  175. He knows that these people really are wicked.

  176. And what is his response?

  177. Sorry.

  178. What's his response to God's command

  179. to go and preach judgment on them?

  180. Verse 3.

  181. Jonah ran away from the Lord

  182. and headed for Tarshish.

  183. Or Tarshish or Tarshish.

  184. Anyway, that place.

  185. He went down to Joppa

  186. where he found a ship

  187. found for that port.

  188. After paying the fare,

  189. he went aboard

  190. and sailed for Tarshish

  191. to flee from the Lord.

  192. He ran away.

  193. But why would he run away?

  194. He didn't like them.

  195. We see later

  196. that he really wanted God to judge them.

  197. He wanted it very badly.

  198. And here God is telling him

  199. that he's going to judge them

  200. and that he should go

  201. and announce that to them.

  202. So why not go and tell his enemies

  203. that they're doomed?

  204. What would stop him

  205. from wanting to do that

  206. when he wanted them to be judged?

  207. Well, basically, the reason is

  208. that Jonah knew something

  209. about God.

  210. It's something that he had seen himself

  211. because God had already used him

  212. to prophesy to Israel.

  213. We see this same Jonah show up

  214. in 2 Kings, chapter 14.

    2 Kings 14 chapter mention

  215. And I'll just read to you.

  216. In the 15th year of Amaziah,

  217. son of Joash, king of Judah,

  218. Jeroboam, the son of Jehoash,

  219. king of Israel,

  220. became king in Samaria.

  221. He reigned 41 years.

  222. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  223. He didn't turn away

  224. from any of the sins of Jeroboam,

  225. which he had caused Israel to commit.

  226. He was the one

  227. who restored the boundaries of Israel

  228. from the Lebo Hamath to the Dead Sea

  229. in accordance with the word of the Lord,

  230. the God of Israel,

  231. spoken through his servant,

  232. Jonah, son of Amittai,

  233. the prophet from Gath-Hepper.

  234. The Lord had seen how bitterly

  235. everyone in Israel,

  236. slave or free,

  237. was suffering.

  238. There was no one to help them.

  239. And since the Lord had not said

  240. that he would blot the name of Israel

  241. out from under heaven,

  242. he saved them

  243. by the hand of Jeroboam.

  244. So here's Jeroboam,

  245. a bad king.

  246. And yet God sends a message

  247. with Jonah that says,

  248. I'm going to bless you.

  249. I'm going to bless Israel

  250. through this bad king.

  251. So Jonah already knew

  252. that God was inclined

  253. to show mercy to people

  254. even when they didn't deserve it.

  255. Because obviously Israel

  256. had done nothing

  257. to deserve this mercy.

  258. This was an evil king.

  259. The people,

  260. the king had never repented.

  261. The people had never repented.

  262. And yet God says,

  263. I haven't told them

  264. that I would destroy them.

  265. So I'm going to bless them instead

  266. and give them another opportunity

  267. to repent.

  268. And turn back.

  269. He knew also very well

  270. what we've read already,

  271. how God had revealed himself

  272. to Moses.

  273. We've had it read already

  274. in Exodus 34.

  275. The Lord,

  276. the Lord,

  277. compassionate and gracious,

  278. slow to anger,

  279. abounding in love

  280. and faithfulness,

  281. maintaining love to thousands,

  282. forgiving wickedness,

  283. rebellion and sin.

  284. Yet he does not leave

  285. the guilty unpunished.

  286. He punishes the children

  287. and their children

  288. for the sin of the parents

  289. of the third and fourth generation.

  290. So there's justice

  291. in God's dealings

  292. with people, yes.

  293. But Jonah knew

  294. that there was more

  295. than only justice.

  296. There was mercy

  297. and forgiveness

  298. even for those

  299. who had rebelled

  300. and sinned.

  301. And that kind of forgiveness

  302. had already been shown

  303. over and over

  304. and over and over again

  305. in the history

  306. of God's people,

  307. Israel,

  308. and even in the nations

  309. around them.

  310. In Jeremiah 18,

  311. God says specifically,

  312. he says,

  313. if at any time

  314. I announce

  315. that a nation or kingdom

  316. is to be uprooted,

  317. torn down and destroyed,

  318. if that nation I warned

  319. repents of its evil,

  320. then I will relent

  321. and not inflict on it

  322. the disaster I planned.

  323. So God has said it

  324. very clearly,

  325. very specifically,

  326. and Jonah had seen

  327. the pattern in history.

  328. That when God

  329. announces judgment

  330. against people

  331. for their sin,

  332. he leaves them

  333. an opportunity.

  334. often many opportunities

  335. to repent

  336. and be forgiven.

  337. So why did Jonah run away?

  338. He ran away

  339. because he knew

  340. that if he announced

  341. God's judgment

  342. against the Assyrians,

  343. there was the very real possibility

  344. that they would repent

  345. and that they would not be judged

  346. because God would spare them.

  347. It wasn't actually

  348. specifically part of the message

  349. because the message

  350. was only go to the great city

  351. and preach against it

  352. because of their wickedness.

  353. It wasn't in the message itself,

  354. but the very fact

  355. that God was giving them warning

  356. before he destroyed them,

  357. before he judged them,

  358. showed that he was giving them

  359. a chance to repent,

  360. to avoid the judgment.

  361. And Jonah just could not

  362. stand the thought

  363. of that happening

  364. to his enemies.

  365. And if we look at chapter 4,

  366. if you just turn over

  367. to chapter 4,

  368. Nineveh actually does repent.

  369. It happens just as

  370. Jonah was afraid of

  371. and God spares them

  372. from the judgment

  373. that he had warned.

  374. So in 4, verse 1,

  375. to Jonah this seemed

  376. very wrong

  377. and he became angry.

  378. He prayed to the Lord,

  379. isn't this what I said,

  380. Lord, when I was still at home.

  381. This is what I tried

  382. to forestall by fleeing

  383. to Tarshish.

  384. I knew that you are

  385. gracious and compassionate God,

  386. slow to anger

  387. and abounding in love.

  388. Where have we heard

  389. that before?

  390. A God who relents

  391. from sending calamity.

  392. Now, Lord,

  393. take away my life.

  394. It's better for me

  395. to die than to live.

  396. He's pretty upset.

  397. And here he is

  398. quoting Exodus 34,

  399. word for word,

  400. God's character,

  401. but he's not quoting it

  402. as a praise.

  403. He's quoting it

  404. as an accusation

  405. against God.

  406. He's very much okay

  407. with God

  408. being gracious

  409. to Israel.

  410. He doesn't seem

  411. to have any problem

  412. delivering the message

  413. that God was going

  414. to be gracious

  415. to Israel

  416. in spite of their sin.

  417. That's okay.

  418. Not upset about that.

  419. But when God

  420. is gracious

  421. to the Assyrians

  422. even after they repent,

  423. that's a problem.

  424. And that's why

  425. he runs away.

  426. And it seems like

  427. he thought that maybe

  428. if he held back

  429. the message,

  430. that if he

  431. just didn't tell them,

  432. didn't give them

  433. the warning,

  434. maybe they really

  435. would be doomed

  436. because they'd have

  437. no opportunity

  438. to repent.

  439. In his mind,

  440. he seemed to think

  441. that by running away,

  442. he would make sure

  443. that the Assyrians

  444. got what they

  445. really deserved.

  446. Of course,

  447. God wasn't so easily

  448. put off.

  449. He sends this

  450. massive storm

  451. to the ship.

  452. The sailors are afraid.

  453. They realize

  454. it's the hand of God.

  455. But Jonah's response

  456. is interesting,

  457. I think.

  458. This is back

  459. in chapter 1.

  460. He talks about...

  461. Sorry.

  462. Jonah doesn't

  463. beg for his life.

  464. He doesn't say,

  465. God, you know,

  466. okay, fine,

  467. I'll obey you.

  468. Just please save us.

  469. In fact,

  470. Jonah doesn't

  471. even pray at all.

  472. The sailors pray.

  473. They ask Jonah

  474. to pray,

  475. but he doesn't do it.

  476. All he says

  477. is just throw me in.

  478. Which is basically

  479. just saying,

  480. just kill me now

  481. because you get

  482. thrown into a stormy sea

  483. in the middle

  484. of the ocean.

  485. Well,

  486. that's basically

  487. certain death.

  488. So, I mean,

  489. is it possible

  490. that Jonah

  491. was actually

  492. so committed

  493. to making sure

  494. that the Assyrians

  495. were judged

  496. that he was actually

  497. willing to make,

  498. to even die

  499. to make sure

  500. that that happened?

  501. To make sure

  502. that the message

  503. would not get to them

  504. and that they

  505. wouldn't get the warning

  506. and that if he died,

  507. maybe they would die too.

  508. One thing that Jonah

  509. saw clearly,

  510. he saw clearly

  511. that the sin

  512. of the Assyrians

  513. was a serious thing.

  514. And he was right.

  515. Their sin

  516. really did deserve

  517. God's judgment.

  518. There's no question

  519. about it.

  520. God had every right

  521. to announce judgment

  522. on Nineveh

  523. for all the wicked

  524. things that they had done.

  525. But God had every right

  526. to be gracious

  527. as well.

  528. And he had every right

  529. to be gracious

  530. to Israel

  531. and he had every right

  532. to be gracious

  533. to wicked Nineveh.

  534. What Jonah

  535. can't see

  536. very clearly here

  537. is that God

  538. also had every right

  539. to announce judgment

  540. on Jonah himself.

  541. Jonah deserved

  542. the same kind of judgment

  543. that Assyria

  544. was getting.

  545. After all,

  546. he had directly

  547. disobeyed

  548. God's clear command.

  549. He had tried his best

  550. to subvert

  551. God's revealed will,

  552. his stated will,

  553. and make things happen

  554. according to his own agenda.

  555. He was very committed

  556. to that,

  557. even to the point of

  558. maybe even being

  559. willing to die for it.

  560. And he never even

  561. repents.

  562. If you look in chapter 2,

  563. he gives this long prayer

  564. after God saves him

  565. from his trying

  566. to kill himself.

  567. in verse 3 of chapter 2,

  568. he said,

  569. You hurled me

  570. into the deep

  571. in the very heart

  572. of the seas

  573. and the currents

  574. swirled about me.

  575. All your waves

  576. and breakers

  577. swept over me.

  578. I mean,

  579. he's basically,

  580. he's saying

  581. God hurled him

  582. into the deep

  583. and it was God's waves

  584. that were over him.

  585. But is that really fair?

  586. I mean,

  587. wasn't it Jonah

  588. who asked the sailors

  589. to throw him in?

  590. Wasn't the very fact

  591. that he was on the ocean

  592. a result of his

  593. direct disobedience?

  594. I mean,

  595. if he had gone to Nineveh,

  596. he wouldn't have had

  597. to cross an ocean.

  598. So,

  599. and look in verse 4.

  600. He says,

  601. I've been banished

  602. from your sight,

  603. yet I will look again

  604. toward your holy temple.

  605. But,

  606. who banished him?

  607. Wasn't it Jonah himself

  608. that was doing

  609. his level best

  610. to get away from God?

  611. To get away

  612. from God's sight?

  613. And yet,

  614. he makes it sound

  615. like he's doing

  616. something wonderful

  617. looking towards the temple

  618. after he's been banished.

  619. And in verse 7,

  620. he says,

  621. my life was ebbing away.

  622. I remembered you

  623. and my prayer rose to you

  624. to your holy temple.

  625. He makes it sound

  626. like he's pretty great

  627. that in the middle

  628. of all this trouble,

  629. he's looking to the Lord,

  630. but there's no admission

  631. that he actually

  632. was the cause

  633. of all the trouble.

  634. That his rebellion

  635. against God

  636. was the reason

  637. for all of that trouble.

  638. He kind of promotes himself

  639. even in his prayer

  640. of thankfulness.

  641. He's quoting lots

  642. of scripture.

  643. He knows his Bible well,

  644. but there's something

  645. really missing here.

  646. There's no repentance.

  647. There's no admission

  648. of doing anything wrong.

  649. And contrast that response

  650. with the wicked people

  651. of Nineveh

  652. when they heard his warning.

  653. Look in chapter 3,

  654. starting in verse 5.

  655. The Ninevites believed God.

  656. They declared a fast,

  657. all of them,

  658. from the greatest to the least,

  659. and put on sackcloth.

  660. When the news reached

  661. the king of Nineveh,

  662. he rose from his throne,

  663. took off his royal robes,

  664. covered himself with sackcloth,

  665. and sat down in the dust.

  666. Then he issued a proclamation

  667. in Nineveh.

  668. By the decree of the king

  669. and his nobles,

  670. do not let any man or beast,

  671. herd or flock,

  672. taste anything.

  673. Do not let them eat or drink,

  674. but let man and beast

  675. be covered with sackcloth.

  676. Let everyone call urgently on God.

  677. Let them give up their evil ways

  678. and their violence.

  679. Who knows?

  680. God may yet relent

  681. and with compassion

  682. turn from his fierce anger

  683. so that we will not perish.

  684. They repented immediately.

  685. And even the sailors,

  686. in 116,

  687. it says,

  688. they feared the Lord.

  689. And offered sacrifices to him.

  690. So it seems like

  691. everyone is actually

  692. responding to God

  693. better than the actual prophet

  694. of God.

  695. And yet even this rebellious prophet

  696. who can't admit

  697. his own disobedience

  698. is given a second chance

  699. by God.

  700. That's a great mercy.

  701. I mean,

  702. God didn't have to do that.

  703. He could have found somebody else

  704. who would be willing to go.

  705. But to Jonah's credit,

  706. he does go the second time,

  707. although his heart

  708. really doesn't change.

  709. We've read already

  710. from chapter 4

  711. about how Jonah

  712. was angry with God

  713. when God spared the Ninevites.

  714. But again,

  715. God is gracious with Jonah

  716. and he gives him

  717. this illustration

  718. at the end of the book

  719. about a plant.

  720. He makes this plant

  721. grow over Jonah

  722. and Jonah loves it

  723. because it gives him shade,

  724. makes him comfortable.

  725. And then he takes it away

  726. and Jonah's angry.

  727. But basically,

  728. he's teaching Jonah

  729. that his perspective

  730. is just way too small.

  731. He cares so much

  732. about his own comfort.

  733. He cares about this plant.

  734. He cares about his own agenda.

  735. But he can't see

  736. the desperate need

  737. of a whole city

  738. full of people

  739. that God created.

  740. So what Jonah saw,

  741. he saw very clearly

  742. that other people's sins

  743. deserve God's judgment.

  744. Which was true.

  745. But what he overlooked

  746. was that his own sins

  747. deserve God's judgment

  748. as well.

  749. He just took for granted

  750. that God had mercy on him.

  751. And God did have mercy on him.

  752. But he didn't recognize

  753. his own even need for that.

  754. But God sees all of it.

  755. He sees all sin.

  756. He doesn't pick and choose

  757. whose sin to take seriously.

  758. He doesn't pick and choose

  759. what sin to take seriously.

  760. We love to take sins

  761. sins that we don't struggle

  762. with seriously.

  763. And we love to kind of

  764. justify and overlook

  765. the sins that, you know,

  766. are more common to us.

  767. But God doesn't do that.

  768. He sees all sin

  769. as serious

  770. as it really is.

  771. But thankfully,

  772. our only hope is

  773. that God is a God of mercy

  774. as well.

  775. But the question is,

  776. do we really

  777. realize

  778. realize

  779. and do we

  780. recognize

  781. our own need

  782. for God's mercy?

  783. I mean,

  784. Romans says,

  785. the wages of sin

  786. is death.

  787. And all have sinned

  788. and fall short

  789. of the glory of God.

  790. Isaiah says,

  791. all of us

  792. have become

  793. like unclean.

  794. I'm sorry,

  795. all of us

  796. have become

  797. like one who is unclean.

  798. All our righteous acts

  799. are like filthy rags.

  800. Even our righteous acts

  801. are like filthy rags.

  802. Even our best moments

  803. are tainted

  804. with sin.

  805. Whether it's

  806. wrong attitudes

  807. or pride

  808. or self-promotion

  809. or self-sufficiency.

  810. I mean,

  811. it's clear that

  812. even our good deeds,

  813. even our good deeds

  814. can be done

  815. in rebellion

  816. against God.

  817. We might be like Jonah

  818. and we might look down

  819. on the really wicked people

  820. around us

  821. who are doing

  822. really wicked things

  823. and we think

  824. that we're way

  825. better than them.

  826. But if we could see

  827. from God's perspective,

  828. it'd be obvious

  829. that even if

  830. our sins may be different,

  831. all sin

  832. is serious.

  833. All sin

  834. deserves

  835. God's judgment.

  836. We might try

  837. to justify

  838. our own sin.

  839. We might take

  840. God's mercy to us

  841. for granted

  842. like somehow

  843. we deserve it.

  844. But even while

  845. we're looking down

  846. on really wicked

  847. people around,

  848. we need to realize

  849. that our sin

  850. is so serious

  851. that the only way

  852. for God

  853. to offer forgiveness

  854. to us,

  855. the only way

  856. for God

  857. to offer mercy

  858. to us

  859. was for Jesus

  860. to take our punishment

  861. to the cross.

  862. that's how

  863. serious

  864. our sin is.

  865. And following

  866. on from that,

  867. do we realize,

  868. okay,

  869. how serious

  870. our own sin is?

  871. But also,

  872. do we realize

  873. how serious

  874. the sin is

  875. of other people?

  876. And do we realize

  877. their need

  878. for God's mercy

  879. as well?

  880. Jonah realized

  881. very clearly

  882. that people

  883. deserve God's judgment.

  884. But he didn't want

  885. God to have mercy

  886. on them.

  887. But we might go

  888. to the other extreme

  889. and say,

  890. well,

  891. okay,

  892. and just focus

  893. only on God's mercy

  894. to everyone

  895. and say,

  896. ah,

  897. sure,

  898. you know,

  899. they'll be grand.

  900. Even though

  901. God is just

  902. and he must

  903. punish sin.

  904. I mean,

  905. the only place

  906. where God's justice

  907. and mercy

  908. can meet

  909. is the cross

  910. of Jesus.

  911. Where Jesus

  912. met the demands

  913. of God's justice

  914. for us

  915. so that God

  916. could show us

  917. mercy.

  918. But do we even

  919. care enough

  920. about others

  921. to show them

  922. their need

  923. and also

  924. how God

  925. has provided

  926. mercy?

  927. God gave Jonah

  928. a message

  929. of warning

  930. to give to Nineveh

  931. to give them

  932. a chance

  933. to repent

  934. and to be saved.

  935. But he's given us

  936. a similar message.

  937. I mean,

  938. God's judgment

  939. for sin

  940. has not changed.

  941. There still is

  942. judgment for sin

  943. today

  944. just like there was

  945. back then.

  946. Jonah ran away

  947. from giving that

  948. message because

  949. he wanted them

  950. to be judged.

  951. But we have

  952. lots of reasons

  953. for running away

  954. too.

  955. Maybe we don't

  956. want people

  957. to be judged.

  958. We wouldn't

  959. say that anyway.

  960. Maybe some people

  961. we do.

  962. But maybe we're

  963. just afraid of

  964. what people

  965. will think of us.

  966. We're afraid

  967. of our reputation

  968. and people might

  969. make fun of us

  970. or see us

  971. differently.

  972. But the result

  973. is really the same.

  974. We'd still be

  975. holding back

  976. the message

  977. that they need

  978. to hear

  979. to be saved,

  980. to repent.

  981. So,

  982. we need to be

  983. quick to remember

  984. that we depend

  985. on God's mercy

  986. just as much

  987. as everyone else.

  988. We should be

  989. quick to share

  990. with others

  991. that they need

  992. God's mercy too

  993. but that he has

  994. provided it

  995. in Jesus.

  996. We need to take

  997. sin seriously,

  998. not just everyone

  999. else's sin

  1000. like Jonah did,

  1001. but our own sin

  1002. as well.

  1003. But we also

  1004. should recognize

  1005. that in spite

  1006. of the greatness

  1007. of our sin,

  1008. God has provided

  1009. a mercy

  1010. that is even

  1011. greater.

  1012. It's not only

  1013. for us.

  1014. Jonah was very

  1015. happy to accept

  1016. mercy for himself

  1017. but this mercy

  1018. is actually

  1019. for everyone.

  1020. And he's given

  1021. us the privilege

  1022. of sharing

  1023. that message

  1024. with others.

  1025. The saying is

  1026. that the ground

1027. is level at the cross

  1028. and it's true.

  1029. We all deserve

  1030. God's justice

  1031. and yet God

  1032. has provided

  1033. his mercy

  1034. that is available

  1035. to all.

  1036. And I think

  1037. that a great

  1038. thing for us

  1039. to do now

  1040. would be to sing

  1041. Thank You

  1042. for Saving Me

  1043. is the next song.

  1044. Thank you.
