  1. define marriage as between one man and one woman, it is assumed and implied.

  2. So Article 41.3 reads from our Constitution,

  3. the state pledges to guard with special care the institution of marriage

  4. on which the family is founded and to protect it against attack.

  5. In fact, our laws that we have within our country define marriage as between one man and one woman

  6. and this has been reflected in legislation.

  7. However, according to the chairperson of the Referendum Commission, Mr Justice Kevin Cross,

  8. he says it's not going to change anything.

  9. All it means is marriage is, and his words, broadened to include two people of the same sex.

  10. So it doesn't change marriage.

  11. All we're doing is broadening marriage so that it includes two people of the same sex.

  12. So it will mean primarily two things.

  13. First, that two people of the same sex will be able to marry each other,

  14. just as two people of the opposite sex may marry.

  15. And secondly, these are the two primary things,

  16. a married couple of the opposite sex or of the same sex will be recognized as family

  17. and be entitled to the constitutional protection for families.

  18. Now, all the main political parties and the majority of the independents are campaigning for a yes vote

  19. because they claim it's all about equality and rights.

  20. So listen to what Ender Kenny said at the Fine Gael Ard Fesh some time ago.

  21. Quote,

  22. As we approach the centenary of the rising,

  23. a yes vote would, I believe, send out a powerful signal internationally

  24. that Ireland has evolved into a fair, compassionate and tolerant nation.

  25. I believe that this is the right thing to do.

  26. I and the Fine Gael party strongly support a yes vote.

  27. And therefore I say to all same-sex couples in our country,

  28. this is about you.

  29. It's about your right to say two small words made up of three simple letters,

  30. I do.

  31. Now this week, if you've been paying attention to the news,

  32. former President Mary McAleese gave her views as well.

  33. She said this,

  34. We want to be a human rights issue.

  35. We want them to be born into a world where if they fall in love with someone,

  36. they can express that love fully.

  37. We believe it to be a human rights issue.

  38. Now I think we all want a fair and compassionate Ireland.

  39. We all want to be treated with equality regardless of our gender.

  40. We want the rights of all people protected,

  41. whatever their orientation may be.

  42. So is it not right and fair and compassionate

  43. to recognise the unique relationship between a man and a woman?

  44. Wouldn't it be a tolerant society to protect the marriage institution

  45. on which the family is founded?

  46. You see, while every relationship,

  47. or while every person,

  48. we'll go back one, that's not right,

  49. while every person should be treated with equality,

  50. not every relationship has the same equality.

  51. Okay?

  52. Every person should be treated with equality,

  53. but not every relationship has the same equality.

  54. So let me explain.

  55. The relationship between a brother and a sister

  56. is different to the relationship of a son and his mother.

  57. And that is different, again,

  58. to the relationship between a husband and a wife.

  59. Each individual in those relationships

  60. has equal value and worth.

  61. But the relationships themselves are not equal.

  62. They're different.

  63. Each relationship needs to be treated differently

  64. and we have laws to protect those relationships.

  65. You see, the marriage relationship of one man and one woman is unique.

  66. Only one man and one woman can make new life.

  67. Only one man and one woman can give a child a mum and a dad.

  68. No two men or two women are ever able to do this.

  69. So in this referendum,

  70. we are talking about two very different kinds of relationships.

  71. Therefore, I think it would be very wrong

  72. to treat them as exactly the same.

  73. In fact, if we are to say it's all about rights and equality,

  74. then why not allow two sisters to marry?

  75. Or why don't we allow polygamy?

  76. Or why not legislate for open marriages

  77. where you can go from one to the other?

  78. Why don't we just broaden the definition of marriage

  79. to include what...

  80. Well, you fill in the blank.

  81. You decide what is right for you

  82. in terms of marriage.

  83. The point is,

  84. marriage is a unique relationship

  85. and it should be treated and protected as such.

  86. Now, as the referendum gets closer,

  87. each side of the campaign

  88. are playing what we call the rights card.

  89. Everybody's saying it's this right or that right.

  90. But I want to ask us all this morning,

  91. who ultimately decides what is right?

  92. Is it our laws?

  93. Is it our politicians who say what is right?

  94. Or is it what the outcome of the referendum says is right?

  95. The majority of people,

  96. will they decide what is right?

  97. Well, ultimately for me,

  98. and it should be the same for you if you are a Christian,

  99. it's not what I think is right

  100. or what you think is right.

  101. But ultimately,

  102. it's what God's word says is right.

  103. That is where our authority comes from.

  104. That is where we must submit ourselves to.

  105. And that's to where we're going to turn right now.

  106. We're going to look at two big questions

  107. or two big statements.

  108. Here's the first one.

  109. What has Jesus to say about same-sex marriage?

  110. What does Jesus have to say?

  111. Not what I say,

  112. not what politicians say.

  113. What does Jesus say?

  114. So, what does he have to say?

  115. Well, nothing.

  116. Jesus mentions or never mentions same-sex marriage.

  117. But, he does have something to say about sex and marriage.

  118. What does he have to say?

  119. Well, listen.

  120. First, sexual immorality.

  121. Have a look at Matthew chapter 15.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  122. Matthew chapter 15.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  123. We're going to be looking at a few different chapters in Matthew.

  124. So, if you've got your Bibles there,

  125. please open to Matthew chapter 15.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  126. And I encourage you to take down any notes or any questions.

  127. And if there's anything you want to talk about afterwards or raise on Wednesday,

  128. that would be a great time to do it.

  129. So, Matthew 15 verse 18.

    Matthew 15:18

  130. Familiar words?

  131. Matthew 15 verse 18.

    Matthew 15:18

  132. Now, here Jesus is talking about the different behaviours that make us unacceptable before God.

  133. Now, here Jesus is talking about the different behaviours that make us unacceptable before God.

  134. And the phrase there in the middle, sexual immorality is a catch-all term for any distortion on God's design for sex.

  135. So, it includes things like pornography, adultery, premarital sex, prostitution, same-sex, or any distortion or forced sex within heterosexual marriage.

  136. So, in one statement, Jesus is saying, we are all sexually flawed.

  137. Every single one of us.

  138. But notice, he's not just talking about sexual immorality.

  139. He includes things like evil thoughts, slander, false testimony.

  140. In other words, Jesus is setting a standard before every single person that we all fail to achieve, married or not.

  141. You see, it's not just the area of marriage that we need to get right.

  142. Jesus is saying, it's actually bigger than that.

  143. What we need to get right is our whole life.

  144. We need to get our hearts right.

  145. Look at verse 19.

  146. For it's out of the heart that come all of these things.

  147. So, it's not just about defining marriage.

  148. Jesus is saying, it's much bigger.

  149. We need to get our hearts in order.

  150. But Jesus does have something to say about marriage.

  151. Have a look at Matthew 19.

  152. Matthew 19.

  153. And verse 3.

  154. Matthew 19, verse 3.

    Matthew 19:3

  155. Some Pharisees came.

  156. They were coming to trick Jesus.

  157. So, some Pharisees came to him to test him.

  158. They asked, is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?

  159. So, the Jews at the time had an understanding that a husband could actually divorce his wife for very petty things like not producing a good dinner.

  160. That was the way their laws worked.

  161. So, verse 4.

  162. Haven't you read?

  163. He replied that at the beginning the creator made them male and female and said, for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one flesh.

  164. So, they are no longer two but one.

  165. Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separate.

  166. Now, the primary issue here is about divorce.

  167. That's what the question is.

  168. But as Jesus addresses it, he defines clearly what marriage is.

  169. So, three things under this.

  170. First, we see that marriage is initiated and provided by God.

  171. So, look at verse 4.

  172. Jesus takes us right back to the beginning.

  173. He says, haven't you read, he replied, that at the beginning the creator.

  174. He takes us right back to Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 which he quotes from.

  175. So, he's saying right up front, marriage is not man's idea.

  176. It's the creator's idea.

  177. Marriage is a gift from God to people.

  178. It's not something that we invent and that we decide what's right or what's wrong.

  179. It's something initiated and provided for by God.

  180. Second thing, marriage, he says, is the union of one man and one woman.

  181. So, let's read verse 4 again.

  182. He says, at the beginning the creator made them male and female and said, for this reason a man will leave his father and mother.

  183. And be united to his wife and they will become one flesh.

  184. So, marriage is about one male and one female.

  185. They leave their father a male and they leave their mother a female and they become one flesh.

  186. It's two people of the opposite sex that define marriage.

  187. Now, the fact that we are created as men or as women means we have this relationship called marriage.

  188. Marriage exists because we are sexually different.

  189. Because we are made differently, we have the marriage institution.

  190. So, marriage is clearly defined by the union of one man and one woman.

  191. The third thing under this that Jesus has to say is that the only alternative to heterosexual marriage is singleness.

  192. The only alternative to heterosexual marriage is singleness.

  193. So, as Jesus goes on to talk with the Pharisees about what it is to be faithful,

  194. what it is to live in a lifelong committed marriage relationships,

  195. it makes the disciples a little bit uneasy about marriage.

  196. So, look what they have to say in verse 10.

  197. The disciples said to him,

  198. if this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.

  199. In other words, the standard that Jesus sets is so high,

  200. he said, what if we can't actually live up to this standard?

  201. Then what are we to do?

  202. So, look how Jesus answers.

  203. He starts talking about celibacy or singleness.

  204. So, verse 11.

  205. Jesus replied,

  206. Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given.

  207. For some are eunuchs or some are celibate,

  208. because they were born that way.

  209. Others were made that way by men.

  210. Others have renounced marriage.

  211. In other words, Jesus is saying,

  212. if we are not in a heterosexual marriage,

  213. the only alternative to that is singleness.

  214. Jesus doesn't say to the disciples,

  215. look, if that marriage doesn't work out with that person

  216. and it's not going so well,

  217. well, you can go and marry somebody else.

  218. Or he doesn't say,

  219. if your orientation is same-sex attraction,

  220. then go find somebody of the same sex and marry them.

  221. No, he doesn't say any of that.

  222. He says, look,

  223. singleness is the only godly alternative

  224. to heterosexual marriage.

  225. So, Jesus does have something to say about sex and marriage,

  226. and it challenges every single one of us.

  227. It's not just about same-sex marriage.

  228. It's not just about heterosexual marriage.

  229. It's much deeper than that.

  230. It's about our sexuality,

  231. and as we have seen from Matthew 15,

  232. we are all sexually flawed.

  233. None of us live life as God intends.

  234. Every one of us,

  235. whether we identify as gay or straight,

  236. whether we are married or single,

  237. we all need God to change our hearts on the inside,

  238. to clean us up,

  239. so that we live life His way.

  240. But Jesus says something else about marriage

  241. that is more important

  242. than the marriage relationships

  243. that we may find in this life.

  244. This is the third thing He says about marriage.

  245. Have a look at Matthew chapter 22.

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  246. Matthew 22.

  247. Here's another group of religious leaders.

  248. We have the Pharisees,

  249. and here's the Sadducees.

  250. If you want to know the difference about them,

  251. you can ask me afterwards.

  252. And here they're trying to catch Jesus out

  253. with another question.

  254. And they're asking about,

  255. well, what about marriage in heaven,

  256. or what about marriage in the afterlife?

  257. What about that?

  258. So, Matthew chapter 22, verse 24.

    Matthew 22:24

  259. They come up with this scenario.

  260. Teacher, they said, verse 24,

  261. Moses told us that if a man dies without having children,

  262. his brother must marry the widow

  263. and have children for him.

  264. Now, they say,

  265. there were seven brothers among us.

  266. The first one married and died,

  267. and since he had no children,

  268. he left his wife to his brother.

  269. The same thing happened to the second and third brother,

  270. right on down to the seventh.

  271. Finally, the woman died.

  272. Now then, here's the question.

  273. So, she's married seven times

  274. to seven different people.

  275. They're all brothers.

  276. Now then, at the resurrection,

  277. at the end of life,

  278. whose wife will she be of the seven

  279. since all of them were married to her?

  280. Hmm, good question.

  281. Will she have seven husbands in heaven?

  282. Or does she just have one?

  283. And which one is she going to pick?

  284. What's the answer going to be?

  285. Well, look what Jesus says, verse 29.

  286. Jesus replied,

  287. You are in error

  288. because you do not know the scriptures

  289. or the power of God.

  290. At the resurrection,

  291. at the end of time,

  292. people will neither marry

  293. nor be given in marriage.

  294. Look, says Jesus,

  295. there's something that is much more important

  296. than marriage in this life.

  297. In fact, our married relationships

  298. are all temporary.

  299. What's important is not whether we marry,

  300. but what we will be like.

  301. Look at the end of verse 30.

  302. He says they'll neither marry

  303. nor be given in marriage.

  304. They will be like the angels in heaven.

  305. That is, we will become pure.

  306. However, the intimacy and joy

  307. of human relationships

  308. will be replaced by a new kind of relationship,

  309. an ultimate relationship with God

  310. that the angels now enjoy

  311. with God in heaven.

  312. That is what's important.

  313. Verse 31.

  314. But he continues,

  315. but about the resurrection of the dead.

  316. Have you not read what God said to you?

  317. I am the God of Abraham,

  318. the God of Isaac,

  319. and the God of Jacob.

  320. He is not the God of the dead,

  321. but the God of the living.

  322. Jesus is reminding them

  323. that God is the one

  324. who enters into a permanent,

  325. faithful covenant with his people.

  326. That quote there in verse 32

  327. is this covenant God

  328. who comes to his people

  329. who said,

  330. I am the God of Abraham.

  331. I am the eternal,

  332. living God

  333. who enters into

  334. a relationship

  335. with my people,

  336. into that ultimate

  337. married relationship.

  338. You see,

  339. the problem with this

  340. marriage referendum is

  341. it's so short-sighted.

  342. It's not about

  343. same-sex marriage.

  344. It's not about

  345. heterosexual marriage.

  346. It's about eternity.

  347. It's about the ultimate,

  348. eternal marriage

  349. between God

  350. and his people.

  351. That's where every marriage

  352. is headed.

  353. So the question is,

  354. not what our view of marriage,

  355. but am I,

  356. and are you,

  357. are we ready

  358. to meet God?

  359. we can have marriage

  360. right,

  361. we can have our definition

  362. right,

  363. but are our hearts

  364. right?

  365. That's the real issue.

  366. You see,

  367. the big thing,

  368. if we can just take this away,

  369. is that Jesus

  370. has been saying

  371. through these different passages

  372. we've looked at so far,

  373. listen,

  374. we are all

  375. sexually flawed.

  376. Our hearts

  377. are all broken.

  378. But get this,

  379. we are so loved,

  380. we are infinitely loved

  381. by God.

  382. So much so

  383. that he sent his son,

  384. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  385. who gave up

  386. all of his rights.

  387. The only one

  388. who did have rights.

  389. He gave up

  390. all of his rights

  391. to come and serve

  392. people like you

  393. and me,

  394. to take on

  395. all our impurities,

  396. to become

  397. and to be treated

  398. as if he

  399. was sexually flawed,

  400. so that we might

  401. have his purity

  402. be accepted

  403. and welcomed

  404. into the ultimate

  405. marriage relationship

  406. with God,

  407. to know him

  408. and enjoy him.

  409. That's the big issue.

  410. And we can go on

  411. and on about

  412. defining and saying,

  413. get this,

  414. get this,

  415. but as Christian people,

  416. our role is to

  417. point towards

  418. Jesus

  419. and the relationship

  420. that we can have

  421. with him

  422. and what it means

  423. to live life

  424. under him.

  425. So that's what

  426. Jesus has to say

  427. about same-sex marriage.

  428. The second thing

  429. that we're going

  430. to look at

  431. is what Jesus

  432. has to say

  433. about children's rights.

  434. You see,

  435. in this referendum,

  436. it's not just about

  437. adults saying,

  438. it's my right

  439. to get married.

  440. It's about

  441. the rights

  442. of children

  443. or perhaps

  444. ignoring the rights

  445. of children.

  446. Have a look back

  447. at Matthew 19.

  448. Matthew 19

  449. and verse 13.

  450. So this comes

  451. just after

  452. the teaching

  453. on marriage

  454. that we looked at

  455. just a moment ago.

  456. And in Matthew 19

    Matthew 19:13

  457. verse 13

  458. we read this,

  459. Then little children

  460. were brought

  461. to Jesus

  462. for him

  463. to place

  464. his hands

  465. on them

  466. and pray

  467. for them.

  468. But the disciples

  469. rebuked those

  470. who brought them.

  471. Now,

  472. we might get

  473. a bit surprised

  474. there at the reaction

  475. of the disciples.

  476. Why are the disciples

  477. telling all the parents

  478. who are bringing

  479. all the children,

  480. take them away?

  481. You shouldn't be here

  482. is basically

  483. what's going on.

  484. We don't want

  485. any kids around here.

  486. Why would the disciples

  487. react like this?

  488. Well,

  489. we must remember

  490. that children

  491. in the first century

  492. had no rights

  493. or status.

  494. At very best,

  495. they were to be seen

  496. and not heard.

  497. In fact,

  498. under Roman law,

  499. a father

  500. had the right

  501. to kill his child

  502. if they displeased him

  503. or were unwanted.

  504. So children

  505. in the first century

  506. were legally sold

  507. and used as slaves.

  508. That was allowed

  509. to happen.

  510. That was in the laws.

  511. So children

  512. had no rights

  513. and they had no laws

  514. to protect them.

  515. So the disciples

  516. at this point

  517. are expressing

  518. something of the culture

  519. that has begun

  520. to shape them.

  521. It's wrong,

  522. but they're only expressing

  523. what they have been

  524. shaped by.

  525. Jesus, however,

  526. challenges

  527. and confronts

  528. the culture

  529. of the day.

  530. So look at verse 14.

  531. Jesus said,

  532. Let the little children

  533. come to me

  534. and do not hinder them

  535. for the kingdom of heaven

  536. belongs to such

  537. as these.

  538. Jesus is making

  539. a bold statement

  540. to the culture

  541. and the people

  542. of his time.

  543. Children are

  544. of equal value

  545. and worth.

  546. They are welcomed

  547. and accepted.

  548. And we have to change it

  549. is what he is saying.

  550. And it was because

  551. of that very teaching

  552. of Jesus

  553. that the Christian community

  554. in the first century

  555. were the first people

  556. who were known

  557. for rescuing

  558. and protecting

  559. vulnerable children

  560. and adopting them

  561. into their own families.

  562. They would make it

  563. their business

  564. to go and take

  565. the children

  566. that the Roman fathers

  567. would want to get rid of

  568. and take them in.

  569. And it's this teaching

  570. that has shaped

  571. many of our laws since.

  572. Interestingly,

  573. our Minister for Health,

  574. Leo Varadkar,

  575. although this is speaking

  576. back in 2010,

  577. who has since identified

  578. himself as gay,

  579. said this.

  580. He says,

  581. Every child

  582. has the right

  583. to a mother and father

  584. and as much as possible

  585. the state should vindicate

  586. that right.

  587. That is a more important right

  588. than that of two men

  589. or two women

  590. having a family.

  591. That is the principle

  592. that should underline

  593. our laws

  594. regarding children

  595. and adoption.

  596. So the rights

  597. of children

  598. matter.

  599. In fact,

  600. they have a right

  601. to a mum

  602. and dad.

  603. You see,

  604. the teaching of Jesus

  605. is affirmed

  606. and built upon

  607. as you go through

  608. the New Testament.

  609. The Apostle Paul

  610. consistently writes

  611. about children's relationship

  612. to a mother and father.

  613. In Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  614. have a look there

  615. if you like,

  616. Ephesians chapter 6

    Ephesians 6:1–3

  617. verses 1 to 3.

  618. Ephesians 6

    Ephesians 6:1–3

  619. verses 1 to 3.

  620. So this is all

  621. being built upon

  622. what Jesus has said,

  623. what Jesus had built upon

  624. from what God had said

  625. in the Old Testament.

  626. So chapter 6

  627. verse 1.

  628. Children,

  629. obey your parents

  630. in the Lord

  631. for this is right.

  632. Well,

  633. who are the parents?

  634. Verse 2,

  635. honour your father

  636. and mother

  637. which is the first commandment

  638. and it has a promise.

  639. And here's the promise,

  640. that it may go well

  641. with you

  642. and that you may

  643. enjoy long life

  644. on the earth.

  645. Now isn't it interesting

  646. you're saying,

  647. look,

  648. there's a design here.

  649. This is what family life

  650. is to be like.

  651. Children

  652. in a family

  653. as far as possible

  654. with a mum and dad.

  655. Why?

  656. Because it's going to be

  657. best for them.

  658. You see,

  659. a family consisting

  660. of a mum and dad

  661. is the best environment

  662. for a child

  663. to be raised.

  664. UNICEF,

  665. the worldwide organisation

  666. protecting the rights

  667. of children,

  668. make it abundantly clear

  669. what is best

  670. for the development

  671. and care

  672. of children.

  673. and this comes

  674. from their

  675. early childhood

  676. development studies.

  677. Child development,

  678. they say,

  679. is largely influenced

  680. by the family structure

  681. in which a child

  682. is raised.

  683. Children living

  684. without their mothers

  685. or fathers

  686. or without both

  687. biological parents

  688. are at special risk

  689. of being denied

  690. the care they need

  691. for their physical

  692. and psychological

  693. well-being.

  694. So it's not just

  695. a biblical idea,

  696. it's seen in practice

  697. that that's what's right

  698. and what's best.

  699. Biological parents

  700. are the best.

  701. But let's be real

  702. about this.

  703. Sometimes

  704. our biological parents

  705. are not always

  706. the best parents

  707. and sometimes

  708. they're not always

  709. able to care

  710. for their children.

  711. So sometimes

  712. it is best

  713. and loving

  714. for those children

  715. to be cared for

  716. and to be provided

  717. for by another family.

  718. But that should,

  719. as far as possible,

  720. be a mum

  721. and a dad.

  722. Because if we get it wrong,

  723. then it leads

  724. to all kinds

  725. of terrible experiences.

  726. Listen to this.

  727. This past week

  728. an actress in England

  729. told of her experience

  730. being raised

  731. by her biological mother

  732. and her mum's gay partner.

  733. This is what she said,

  734. far from being

  735. a healthy,

  736. nurturing state

  737. of affairs,

  738. this arrangement

  739. where I was caught

  740. in a destructive,

  741. triangular battle

  742. for my mother's affection

  743. with another woman

  744. while forced

  745. to watch helplessly

  746. as my father

  747. was emasculated

  748. and airbrushed

  749. from our lives

  750. was simultaneously

  751. damaging

  752. and confusing.

  753. So that is

  754. the experience

  755. of one child

  756. in the home

  757. that they were raised.

  758. But the implications

  759. are further.

  760. A website

  761. that I encourage you

  762. to look up

  763. and check out,

  764. Mothers and Fathers Matter.

  765. It's an organisation

  766. campaigning

  767. on the no side

  768. and they spell out

  769. very clearly

  770. what it would mean

  771. if the referendum

  772. is accepted.

  773. It says,

  774. the right

  775. to found

  776. a family

  777. will become

  778. a constitutional

  779. right of any

  780. two men

  781. or two women.

  782. What will that mean?

  783. Well,

  784. for two men

  785. they will be

  786. legally entitled

  787. to seek out

  788. a surrogate.

  789. Two women

  790. on the other side

  791. will have the legal

  792. right to seek

  793. a sperm donation

  794. and create a child.

  795. That means

  796. the child

  797. themselves,

  798. the child

  799. who is born

  800. will have

  801. zero identifying

  802. information

  803. until they reach

  804. the years,

  805. until they reach

  806. 18 years old.

  807. So an entire

  808. childhood

  809. will have passed

  810. before their

  811. true identity

  812. and genetic

  813. heritage

  814. can be revealed

  815. to them.

  816. Now that has

  817. medical

  818. consequences

  819. as well

  820. because there may

  821. be something

  822. hereditary

  823. from their

  824. biological parents

  825. that now

  826. they know

  827. nothing about

  828. because they are

  829. now living

  830. with somebody else

  831. and they can't

  832. be told about it.

  833. Not to say

  834. anything of the

  835. psychological damage

  836. that it may cause.

  837. Now from my

  838. understanding

  839. of what all

  840. that means is

  841. that children

  842. just become

  843. made to order.

  844. They are not

  845. only denied

  846. a mother and

  847. father,

  848. they are denied

  849. knowing who

  850. their actual

  851. biological parents

  852. are.

  853. So just as

  854. Jesus sought

  855. to set out

  856. at the very

  857. beginning

  858. the rights

  859. of children

  860. and to

  861. protect them,

  862. so we should

  863. also be on

  864. the side of

  865. protecting the

  866. rights of

  867. children because

  868. the unborn

  869. can't protect

  870. themselves.

  871. So those are

  872. the two big

  873. things that

  874. Jesus has to

  875. say about

  876. marriage and

  877. about the

  878. rights of

  879. children.

  880. So where

  881. does this

  882. leave us

  883. leave us

  884. all?

  885. Well I

  886. want to

  887. encourage you

  888. to vote

  889. no.

  890. Primarily

  891. because of

  892. what Jesus

  893. has to say

  894. about marriage

  895. and the

  896. rights of

  897. children.

  898. But that

  899. does not

  900. mean by

  901. voting no

  902. we have to

  903. somehow choose

  904. between loving

  905. and opposing.

  906. We mustn't

  907. split that.

  908. We must

  909. do both.

  910. love.

  911. And I want

  912. to stress

  913. this as

  914. people.

  915. We should

  916. be loving

  917. to all

  918. people and

  919. welcoming of

  920. all regardless

  921. of their

  922. relationship

  923. status whether

  924. they are

  925. married or

  926. single.

  927. We should

  928. be people

  929. who are at

  930. the forefront

  931. of protecting

  932. the rights

  933. of all

  934. people whatever

  935. their gender

  936. or orientation.

  937. it is the

  938. Christian

  939. community who

  940. should be

  941. saying you

  942. have the

  943. right to

  944. say what

  945. you want

  946. to say.

  947. You have

  948. the right to

  949. freedom of

  950. speech and

  951. declare what

  952. your interests

  953. and desires

  954. are.

  955. That is what

  956. we should be

  957. protecting and

  958. we should do

  959. it lovingly but

  960. at the same

  961. time opposing

  962. with gentleness

  963. and care any

  964. change to

  965. God's good

  966. design for

  967. marriage and

  968. the family.

  969. loving to

  970. all but

  971. gently opposing

  972. any change

  973. to God's

  974. good design

  975. for marriage

  976. and family.

  977. Let's pray

  978. together.

  979. this is the

  980. prayer of the

  981. apostle Paul.

  982. He says let

  983. your conversation

  984. be always

  985. full of

  986. grace

  987. seasoned

  988. with salt

  989. so that

  990. you may

  991. know how

  992. to answer

  993. everyone.

  994. Father we

  995. ask that

  996. for each

  997. one of us

  998. here

  999. that we

  1000. would be

  1001. able to

  1002. clearly

  1003. explain our

  1004. reasons

  1005. but that we

  1006. would also be

  1007. able to

  1008. explain the

  1009. hope that

  1010. we have

  1011. that there

  1012. is something

  1013. of far

  1014. greater

  1015. significance

  1016. and consequence

  1017. than our

  1018. earthly

  1019. relationships

  1020. relationships

  1021. or our

  1022. married

  1023. relationships

  1024. but the

  1025. ultimate

  1026. marriage

  1027. relationship

  1028. to come

  1029. between God

  1030. and his

  1031. people

  1032. in the

  1033. new heavens

  1034. and the

  1035. new earth.

  1036. Father would

  1037. you please

  1038. forgive us

  1039. for we are

  1040. all sexually

  1041. flawed

  1042. we have all

  1043. messed up

  1044. would you

  1045. please

  1046. forgive us

  1047. would you

  1048. cleanse us

  1049. afresh

  1050. and would

  1051. you please

  1052. by the

  1053. power of

  1054. your Holy

  1055. Spirit

  1056. help us

  1057. to live

  1058. life

  1059. as you

  1060. call us

  1061. to

  1062. protecting

  1063. every

  1064. marriage

  1065. relationship

  1066. here

  1067. protecting

  1068. every

  1069. family

  1070. unit

  1071. here

  1072. and that

  1073. together

  1074. as a

  1075. church

  1076. family

  1077. we would

  1078. be loving

  1079. and caring

  1080. and welcoming

  1081. of all

  1082. who would

  1083. come

  1084. we pray

  1085. that you

  1086. would help

  1087. us to do

  1088. this well

  1089. in Jesus

  1090. name we

  1091. ask

  1092. amen
