  1. And 12. Yeah, thank you.

  2. So page 1012.

  3. And it's my aim this morning for us to consider from this passage

  4. to think about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.

  5. And obviously we can't understand what it means to be a disciple

  6. unless we know something of who Jesus is and what he has come to do.

  7. And so that's what we're going to look at, Jesus' identity, his mission,

  8. and then what it is for us to be his disciples.

  9. The Bible has more to say about discipleship than just this passage,

  10. but this is the text we have before us this morning,

  11. so let's read through it together.

  12. Starting in verse 27.

  13. Mark 8, 27.

  14. Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi

  15. and on the way asked them,

  16. Who do people say that I am?

  17. They replied, some say John the Baptist,

  18. others say Elijah, and still others one of the prophets.

  19. But what about you, he asked.

  20. Who do you say that I am?

  21. Peter answered, you are the Christ.

  22. Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.

  23. He then began to teach them

  24. that the Son of Man must suffer many things

  25. and be rejected by the elders,

  26. chief priests,

  27. and teachers of the law,

  28. and that he must be killed

  29. and after three days rise again.

  30. He spoke plainly about this

  31. and Peter took him aside

  32. and began to rebuke him.

  33. But when Jesus turned

  34. and looked at his disciples,

  35. he rebuked Peter.

  36. Get behind me, Satan,

  37. he said.

  38. You do not have in mind

  39. the things of God,

  40. but the things of men.

  41. Then he called the crowd to him

  42. along with his disciples

  43. and said,

  44. If anyone would come after me,

  45. he must deny himself

  46. and take up his cross

  47. and follow me.

  48. For whoever wants to save his life

  49. will lose it,

  50. but whoever loses his life for me

  51. and for the gospel

  52. will save it.

  53. What good is it for a man

  54. to gain the whole world

  55. yet forfeit his soul?

  56. What can a man give

  57. in exchange for his soul?

  58. If anyone is ashamed of me

  59. and my words

  60. in this adulterous

  61. and sinful generation,

  62. the Son of Man

  63. will be ashamed of him

  64. when he comes

  65. in his Father's glory

  66. with the holy angels.

  67. Let's pray.

  68. Father, we declare

  69. that your word is true.

  70. We acknowledge

  71. that your word is true.

  72. And we acknowledge

  73. that one day

  74. your Son,

  75. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  76. will come back

  77. in the glory

  78. that you have given to him.

  79. And Father,

  80. in light of that coming event,

  81. in light of the return

  82. of your Son,

  83. would you help us this morning

  84. before your word

  85. to humble ourselves?

  86. Lord, that you would give me

  87. clarity to speak

  88. and give us all hearts,

  89. hearts, Lord,

  90. that are wide open

  91. to receive your word.

  92. Thank you, Lord,

  93. that we have your word

  94. in our language.

  95. Thank you that you have loved us

  96. with an everlasting love

  97. and called us into fellowship

  98. with you,

  99. the triune God.

  100. Help us, Father,

  101. for your sake,

  102. for our sake, Lord,

  103. that we might serve you

  104. all the better

  105. during this time

  106. of exile on earth.

  107. Through Christ we pray.

  108. Amen.

  109. A few years ago,

  110. Roxy and I were in

  111. holidays in Romania.

  112. I'm not too sure

  113. the last time I was here

  114. if I used an illustration

  115. from when I was on

  116. holidays in Romania,

  117. so forgive me if it was,

  118. but it doesn't really matter.

  119. The point was that

  120. we met up with some

  121. of Roxy's friends,

  122. one of her girlfriends,

  123. and this girl's,

  124. Shusie was her name,

  125. this girl's boyfriend,

  126. he was on tour

  127. in Afghanistan.

  128. I think he was serving

  129. with the UN or something

  130. like that,

  131. I can't remember.

  132. Anyway,

  133. he brought this up

  134. in conversation,

  135. he was very proud of it,

  136. and he rightly should have been,

  137. he served very well.

  138. It's a very difficult place

  139. to be,

  140. obviously,

  141. at the time.

  142. And he said,

  143. would you like to see

  144. some photos of my tour?

  145. And I was like,

  146. I would actually like

  147. to see some photos

  148. of what it looks like

  149. and what it looked like

  150. to serve there.

  151. But he showed us,

  152. I would say,

  153. close to a thousand photos.

  154. And we were there for,

  155. I don't want to exaggerate

  156. because let's face it,

  157. exaggeration is just

  158. another form of lying,

  159. really,

  160. but I think we were there

  161. for over half an hour,

  162. huddled around the PC monitor

  163. and clicking next

  164. and next.

  165. And you know,

  166. I think,

  167. have you ever had

  168. that experience

  169. where someone shows you

  170. photos and,

  171. to be honest,

  172. your attention is strained?

  173. When Roxy and I

  174. got our wedding photos

  175. back on a CD,

  176. all the photos,

  177. there was like 700 of them

  178. and we got bored

  179. halfway through

  180. and we just said,

  181. you know,

  182. we get the picture.

  183. Have you ever had

  184. that experience

  185. where someone sits you down

  186. and says,

  187. I want to show you something

  188. and it's just,

  189. it's overkill.

  190. The Bible is not like that.

  191. God does not waste your time

  192. when you read the Bible.

  193. There are parts of the Bible

  194. that are long,

  195. that are detailed,

  196. that require concentration,

  197. but it's not without a point.

  198. God doesn't just,

  199. God never waffles

  200. when he speaks.

  201. But there's a great variety

  202. in Scripture.

  203. There are long psalms

  204. and short psalms.

  205. There are long books

  206. of history,

  207. poetry,

  208. prophecy,

  209. all variety.

  210. But the Gospel of Mark,

  211. if you read through it,

  212. which doesn't take very long,

  213. is a very small photo album.

  214. It's 16 chapters long.

  215. Obviously,

  216. when Mark wrote it,

  217. he didn't say,

  218. Mark chapter 1,

    Mark 1:1

  219. verse 1.

  220. He wrote one Gospel

  221. and we've broken it down

  222. into different chapters

  223. and verses

  224. just to help us get through it

  225. and to find our way in it.

  226. But it covers Jesus'

  227. earthly ministry,

  228. which is about

  229. three and a half years.

  230. So if you do the math,

  231. every time you read

  232. a chapter of Mark,

  233. it doesn't really divide up

  234. this easily,

  235. but if you just do

  236. the quick math,

  237. every time you read

  238. a chapter,

  239. it's about ten weeks

  240. of his life,

  241. or of his earthly ministry,

  242. rather.

  243. And so you cover

  244. an awful lot of ground

  245. in a very short amount

  246. of time.

  247. And so as I said

  248. at the start,

  249. I want to begin

  250. looking at what

  251. Mark's purpose is,

  252. which is to say

  253. that Jesus is the Christ

  254. or the Messiah,

  255. those words can be used

  256. interchangeably,

  257. and that he is

  258. the Son of God.

  259. And so that's what

  260. I want to look at

  261. this morning,

  262. Jesus' identity,

  263. the identity of Jesus.

  264. Beginning in chapter 1,

  265. verse 1,

  266. it says,

  267. the beginning of the

  268. gospel of Jesus Christ,

  269. the Son of God,

  270. we read about how

  271. Jesus was baptized

  272. by John the Baptist,

  273. the Holy Spirit

  274. descended upon him

  275. like a dove,

  276. and immediately

  277. afterwards,

  278. that same spirit

  279. leads him out

  280. into the wilderness

  281. where he's tempted

  282. by Satan.

  283. And then he begins

  284. his ministry,

  285. which is primarily

  286. a ministry of preaching,

  287. with the clarion call

  288. of saying,

  289. the time is fulfilled,

  290. the kingdom is at hand,

  291. repent,

  292. and believe

  293. in the gospel.

  294. And Mark's gospel

  295. is absolutely

  296. packed full of examples

  297. of Jesus' ministry,

  298. and I think there's

  299. four,

  300. roughly four main

  301. categories

  302. that you can put

  303. these into.

  304. First of all,

  305. as I said,

  306. there's teaching.

  307. Jesus taught in the

  308. synagogue because

  309. he was a Jew.

  310. He taught on the

  311. beaches,

  312. he taught on the

  313. mountainsides,

  314. in houses,

  315. in towns,

  316. he taught in public,

  317. to the crowds,

  318. and he taught

  319. privately to his

  320. disciples.

  321. Secondly,

  322. he healed people.

  323. He healed a woman

  324. with a fever,

  325. people with diseases,

  326. leopards,

  327. the blind,

  328. the paralyzed,

  329. the deaf,

  330. the mute,

  331. people with withered

  332. hands.

  333. You're talking about

  334. a day when there

  335. are no hospitals,

  336. and a man who,

  337. if you make contact

  338. with him,

  339. will heal you.

  340. Thirdly,

  341. he cast out demons.

  342. demons.

  343. Jesus casts out demons

  344. a lot.

  345. Men,

  346. women,

  347. and children.

  348. And you'll notice

  349. when you read these

  350. that the demons

  351. don't wrestle with

  352. Jesus.

  353. They beg him to be

  354. lenient with them.

  355. He has complete

  356. authority over them.

  357. And fourthly,

  358. that general category

  359. of miracles,

  360. Jesus walked on water.

  361. He brought food

  362. from a very small

  363. amount out to

  364. enough to feed

  365. 5,000,

  366. and then 4,000.

  367. But no sooner

  368. had Jesus' ministry

  369. had begun,

  370. than he's been

  371. followed around

  372. by crowds of people.

  373. At one point,

  374. Mark said the whole

  375. city was at his door.

  376. In fact,

  377. they almost crush him.

  378. Jesus and his disciples

  379. can't even get time

  380. to eat.

  381. And it's no disrespect

  382. to say it.

  383. It's accurate to say

  384. that Jesus was famous.

  385. He was famous.

  386. People followed him

  387. everywhere.

  388. He was always

  389. being followed

  390. by people.

  391. And a crowd

  392. attracts a crowd.

  393. And the more

  394. Jesus ministers,

  395. the more his fame

  396. seems to snowball.

  397. People seem to be

  398. coming after him

  399. for all kinds

  400. of reasons.

  401. We could say

  402. the same today,

  403. couldn't we?

  404. People come to Jesus

  405. for all kinds

  406. of reasons,

  407. don't they?

  408. Why did you

  409. come to him

  410. initially?

  411. Something to think

  412. about.

  413. But these people

  414. wanted to be healed

  415. of their sicknesses

  416. and diseases.

  417. Some wanted to receive

  418. free bread.

  419. Others wanted to

  420. just see miracles.

  421. Others were just

  422. probably just curious

  423. about who he was

  424. and what he had to say

  425. and they just wanted

  426. to hear more.

  427. Because he

  428. taught with authority.

  429. He spoke with authority

  430. unlike the scribes.

  431. But this

  432. produces a problem

  433. because Jesus

  434. has a crowd

  435. of people

  436. following him

  437. and they all

  438. have different goals.

  439. They all have

  440. different agendas

  441. as it were.

  442. Some of them good,

  443. some of them not so good.

  444. Masses of people.

  445. And so you can

  446. picture them

  447. where our text

  448. picks up this morning.

  449. They're walking

  450. from the Sea of Galilee,

  451. Bethsaida,

  452. and then they're

  453. walking up north

  454. to Caesarea Philippi.

  455. They're walking

  456. along the road.

  457. Jesus is on his mission.

  458. He knows where

  459. he's going.

  460. And you can picture

  461. them as they're

  462. walking along.

  463. Jesus is in front.

  464. The disciples

  465. are next to him

  466. and then shortly

  467. behind there's

  468. just probably,

  469. I would imagine

  470. a throng of people.

  471. Hundreds of people.

  472. And Jesus

  473. asks his disciples

  474. that question.

  475. Who do people

  476. say that I am?

  477. And they chime in

  478. with the different

  479. views that are

  480. going around

  481. about who Jesus is.

  482. Some say you're

  483. John the Baptist

  484. whom Herod had killed.

  485. John the Baptist

  486. back from the dead

  487. as it were.

  488. Elijah.

  489. If you look at

  490. the very last verses

  491. in the Old Testament,

  492. God says that

  493. he's going to send

  494. Elijah to turn

  495. the parts of the people

  496. back to the Father.

  497. Or one of the prophets.

  498. And so there's

  499. all these sorts

  500. of different ideas

  501. of who Christ is.

  502. And then Christ

  503. brings the follow-up

  504. question to the disciples.

  505. Who do you say

  506. that I am?

  507. Peter seems to always

  508. be the first to speak,

  509. doesn't he?

  510. He speaks on behalf

  511. of the disciples

  512. and says,

  513. you are the Christ

  514. or the Messiah.

  515. You're the Messiah,

  516. the promised one,

  517. the anointed one,

  518. the Savior,

  519. the deliverer

  520. who will restore

  521. Israel to glory,

  522. the one who the law

  523. and the prophets

  524. speak about.

  525. You are the Savior

  526. of the world

  527. to all who believe,

  528. the Jew first

  529. and to the Gentile.

  530. And so Jesus affirms

  531. Peter's answer.

  532. He doesn't say,

  533. no, no, you're wrong.

  534. But he affirms it

  535. and he gives him

  536. a warning.

  537. He says,

  538. don't tell anyone

  539. about who I am.

  540. Now that seems

  541. kind of odd,

  542. doesn't it?

  543. Why does Jesus

  544. at different points

  545. in the Gospel

  546. turn people and say,

  547. don't tell anyone

  548. about who I am?

  549. Or he forbids people.

  550. I do not give you

  551. permission to tell

  552. people who I am.

  553. Why does he do that?

  554. It would seem

  555. counterproductive

  556. if he wants to get

  557. his message out there.

  558. But that's exactly

  559. the point.

  560. There were thousands

  561. of different,

  562. as we've already seen,

  563. different ideas

  564. and concepts

  565. and messages

  566. about who Jesus was

  567. and he wants to make sure

  568. the right one

  569. gets out there.

  570. And until the time

  571. is right,

  572. Jesus does not want

  573. to put fuel

  574. on the fire

  575. of misinformation.

  576. Because there are

  577. people out there

  578. who want to use Jesus

  579. for their own agenda.

  580. They want Jesus

  581. to basically be

  582. a political activist

  583. and to get rid

  584. of the Roman rule

  585. and to break off

  586. the shackles of bondage

  587. so that the Jewish people

  588. can be free.

  589. And if they hear

  590. that he is the Christ

  591. and they'll say,

  592. that's wonderful,

  593. that's it.

  594. And he'll do

  595. what we want him to do.

  596. In John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  597. for example,

  598. I'll read it for you,

  599. but right after he's fed

  600. the 5,000,

  601. it says,

  602. Jesus,

  603. knowing that they

  604. intended to come

  605. and make him king

  606. by force,

  607. withdrew again

  608. to a mountain

  609. by himself.

  610. And so Jesus sees

  611. that the people,

  612. having just fed them

  613. 5,000 of them,

  614. he sees that they're

  615. so enamored

  616. with his miraculous power

  617. and his usefulness

  618. that they want

  619. to make him king.

  620. Jesus,

  621. you are so useful

  622. and you're so powerful,

  623. you can get so much done.

  624. You tick all the boxes.

  625. You can be our king.

  626. And Jesus wants

  627. nothing to do with it.

  628. The only agenda

  629. that Jesus Christ

  630. is interested in fulfilling

  631. is the agenda

  632. of the Father.

  633. Not my will,

  634. but yours be done.

  635. And so Peter's answer

  636. is correct

  637. in terms of

  638. the words he uses.

  639. But as we go on

  640. to look at Christ's mission,

  641. we'll see that Peter's

  642. understanding

  643. of what the Christ is

  644. is totally off base.

  645. He misses it.

  646. So let's read

  647. verses 31 to 33 again

  648. where Christ goes on

  649. to expand upon

  650. what it means

  651. that he is the Christ.

  652. And he began

  653. to teach them

  654. that the Son of Man

  655. must suffer many things

  656. and be rejected

  657. by the elders,

  658. the chief priests

  659. and the teachers

  660. of the law,

  661. and that he must be

  662. killed and after

  663. three days rise again.

  664. He spoke plainly

  665. about this

  666. and Peter took him aside

  667. and began to rebuke him.

  668. But when Jesus turned

  669. and looked at his disciples,

  670. he rebuked Peter,

  671. get behind me, Satan.

  672. He said,

  673. you do not have in mind

  674. the concerns of God,

  675. but merely human concerns.

  676. So Jesus and his disciples

  677. have been together

  678. for months.

  679. He has taught them

  680. so much,

  681. but at this time

  682. he begins to teach them

  683. about what is going

  684. to happen to him.

  685. They have not heard

  686. this before.

  687. This is the first time

  688. that they have heard

  689. anything about suffering

  690. or dying

  691. or going to the cross

  692. or being rejected

  693. by the leadership

  694. of Israel.

  695. And it says

  696. he taught them.

  697. So he didn't just say it

  698. and throw it out there

  699. and sort of leave

  700. an awkward silence.

  701. He taught them.

  702. He explained it for them.

  703. He said he spoke plainly.

  704. He didn't use parables

  705. to explain it to them.

  706. He just spoke plainly.

  707. This is what is going

  708. to happen.

  709. And no doubt

  710. he would have turned

  711. to the scriptures

  712. and shown how

  713. that is why,

  714. because it is in scripture,

  715. this is why

  716. he must be killed.

  717. As he said later in John,

  718. the Son of Man goes

  719. as it is written of him.

  720. Jesus didn't die

  721. because man got his way.

  722. Jesus died ultimately

  723. because God got his way.

  724. Let me read from you

  725. Isaiah 53.

  726. You can turn there

  727. if you want,

  728. Isaiah 53.

  729. But I'll read it for you.

  730. It speaks

  731. of the suffering servant

  732. who has believed

  733. our message

  734. and to whom

  735. has the arm

  736. of the Lord

  737. been revealed,

  738. speaking of Christ

  739. prophetically

  740. before he arrived.

  741. He grew up

  742. before him

  743. like a tender shoot,

  744. like a root

  745. out of dry ground.

  746. He had no beauty

  747. or majesty

  748. to attract us to him.

  749. nothing in his appearance

  750. that we should desire him.

  751. He was despised

  752. and rejected

  753. by men,

  754. a man of sorrows

  755. and familiar

  756. with suffering,

  757. like one

  758. from whom

  759. men hide

  760. their faces.

  761. He was despised

  762. and we esteemed him not.

  763. Surely he took up

  764. our infirmities

  765. and carried our sorrows.

  766. Yet we considered him

  767. stricken by God,

  768. smitten by him

  769. and afflicted.

  770. But he was pierced

  771. for our transgressions,

  772. he was crushed

  773. for our iniquities.

  774. The punishment

  775. that brought us peace

  776. was upon him

  777. and by his wounds

  778. we are healed.

  779. We all like sheep

  780. have gone astray,

  781. each of us

  782. has turned

  783. to his own way

  784. and the Lord

  785. has laid on him

  786. the iniquity

  787. of us all.

  788. So Jesus is saying

  789. this is

  790. what must take place,

  791. this is why

  792. I am here.

  793. And Peter

  794. takes him aside.

  795. You can almost

  796. picture him

  797. taking him

  798. by the elbow

  799. and saying,

  800. you know,

  801. Jesus,

  802. this is not on.

  803. It doesn't say

  804. Jesus disagreed

  805. with him,

  806. it said he rebuked him.

  807. That's strong language.

  808. He took him aside

  809. and said,

  810. Jesus,

  811. that's not right.

  812. We don't know

  813. exactly what he said

  814. but if it says rebuke

  815. it means he probably

  816. used very forceful

  817. and determined language

  818. towards Christ

  819. that that's not

  820. the way it's going to go.

  821. No one's going to kill you.

  822. You're safe.

  823. Who can touch you?

  824. It says Jesus turns

  825. so Peter's taking him aside

  826. and Jesus turns

  827. and looks at the disciples.

  828. I think that's

  829. indicating that

  830. his response

  831. to what he's about

  832. to say to Peter

  833. is a corrective

  834. for all of them.

  835. Peter has spoken

  836. on behalf of the disciples

  837. and so he's now

  838. responding to Peter

  839. but I think

  840. what he's saying

  841. is true for all.

  842. It's a corrective

  843. for all rather.

  844. It's startling

  845. what he says.

  846. He says,

  847. get behind me,

  848. Satan.

  849. You do not have

  850. in mind

  851. the concerns of God

  852. but merely

  853. human concerns.

  854. That's strong language,

  855. isn't it?

  856. Jesus calling you Satan.

  857. He says,

  858. get behind me.

  859. In other words,

  860. you're in my way.

  861. Insofar, Peter,

  862. as you are getting

  863. in the way

  864. of my true mission,

  865. insofar as you

  866. do not understand

  867. and do not believe

  868. what I have told you

  869. about what I came here

  870. to do,

  871. you are in my way

  872. and you're serving

  873. the purposes

  874. of Satan.

  875. You're an obstruction

  876. to my mission.

  877. You know,

  878. Peter probably,

  879. you know,

  880. took him off

  881. to the side.

  882. Physically and literally

  883. took him aside

  884. from his path

  885. and he's trying now

  886. to put him aside

  887. from his true mission too.

  888. I wonder what Peter's

  889. expression was

  890. in his face.

  891. He's probably very

  892. shocked to hear

  893. Jesus say to him,

  894. get behind me,

  895. Satan.

  896. But unwittingly,

  897. he was

  898. opposing Jesus'

  899. true mission.

  900. And so Jesus responds

  901. in equal force

  902. saying that

  903. that thinking

  904. ultimately,

  905. its source

  906. is satanic.

  907. Can you think

  908. of anything more

  909. that the devil

  910. would have wanted

  911. to have done

  912. than to derail

  913. Christ's mission?

  914. 1 John 3, 8,

  915. the reason the Son

  916. of God appeared

  917. was to destroy

  918. the work of the devil.

  919. I recently watched

  920. a documentary

  921. on JFK

  922. and it obviously

  923. dealt with

  924. the Cold War

  925. and the nuclear

  926. standoff.

  927. with Khrushchev

  928. and there was

  929. a point

  930. where the world

  931. really did seem

  932. to be on the brink

  933. of nuclear war.

  934. And in the end,

  935. the final decision,

  936. JFK at times

  937. had advisors

  938. telling him

  939. they've put missiles

  940. in Cuba now,

  941. press the button,

  942. let's get war

  943. on the way,

  944. let's just prove,

  945. let's show them

  946. who's boss.

  947. and the ultimate

  948. decision,

  949. the rest,

  950. the decision rested,

  951. that burden

  952. ultimately rested

  953. on JFK.

  954. No one else,

  955. he was the person,

  956. the commander-in-chief

  957. who had to make

  958. that decision

  959. and he very nearly

  960. came close to doing it

  961. but he waited

  962. and waited

  963. and thankfully

  964. it was avoided.

  965. Friends,

  966. we will never

  967. understand

  968. the weight

  969. of responsibility

  970. that Jesus

  971. had on his shoulders.

  972. The intensity

  973. of the spiritual

  974. warfare that Jesus

  975. endured for you

  976. and for me

  977. is beyond

  978. what we can ever

  979. understand.

  980. No one

  981. was tempted

  982. more

  983. than Jesus

  984. was tempted.

  985. Remember in the

  986. wilderness,

  987. Satan offers him

  988. a shortcut

  989. to glory,

  990. doesn't he?

  991. He says,

  992. I'll give you

  993. all the kingdoms

  994. of the world,

  995. you just bow down

  996. and give me

  997. a little worship.

  998. no one

  999. endured

  1000. more spiritual

  1001. opposition

  1002. than Jesus

  1003. did.

  1004. And when

  1005. Jesus' hour

  1006. had eventually

  1007. come,

  1008. Christ endured

  1009. the full burden

  1010. of God's wrath

  1011. on the cross

  1012. for you

  1013. and for me.

  1014. And as he

  1015. prayed before

  1016. going to Calvary,

  1017. such was the

  1018. agony of his

  1019. soul that he

  1020. prayed,

  1021. Father,

  1022. if you are

  1023. willing,

  1024. take this

  1025. cup from

  1026. me.

  1027. Yes,

  1028. not my

  1029. will,

  1030. but yours

  1031. be done.

  1032. We will

  1033. never understand

  1034. what Christ

  1035. faced on the

  1036. cross,

  1037. the weight

  1038. and the

  1039. burden of

  1040. it.

  1041. There was

  1042. no plan

  1043. B,

  1044. there was

  1045. no spare

  1046. Messiah,

  1047. I don't mean

  1048. that disrespectfully,

  1049. but there was

  1050. one,

  1051. and he was

  1052. this.

  1053. And as

  1054. clearly as we

  1055. emphasize the

  1056. sovereignty of

  1057. God and

  1058. saying who

  1059. can undermine

  1060. God's purposes,

  1061. no one can,

  1062. let us not

  1063. say that at

  1064. the expense of

  1065. also being able

  1066. to say that

  1067. Christ struggled

  1068. and that he

  1069. had to,

  1070. with all of

  1071. his frame,

  1072. go to the

  1073. cross for you

  1074. and me.

  1075. I used to

  1076. have a bad

  1077. understanding of

  1078. what it meant

  1079. that Jesus was

  1080. fully God and

  1081. fully man,

  1082. I certainly

  1083. don't have a

  1084. perfect understanding,

  1085. but I often

  1086. thought that

  1087. when Jesus

  1088. was tempted

  1089. it was sort

  1090. of like

  1091. it was not

  1092. a bother to

  1093. him.

  1094. It was kind

  1095. of like

  1096. playing tennis,

  1097. it would be

  1098. like you and

  1099. I playing

  1100. tennis or

  1101. Roger Federer,

  1102. he could just

  1103. wipe the floor

  1104. with his hands

  1105. behind his

  1106. back or one

  1107. of his hands

  1108. behind his

  1109. back.

  1110. There's no

  1111. real effort

  1112. involved,

  1113. it's just

  1114. a show.

  1115. But Jesus

  1116. was tempted

  1117. in his

  1118. humanity,

  1119. he was

  1120. pressured

  1121. in his

  1122. humanity,

  1123. he was being

  1124. pulled in

  1125. all different

  1126. directions,

  1127. and in this

  1128. instance even

  1129. by his own

  1130. disciples.

  1131. Peter,

  1132. you're not

  1133. thinking on

  1134. the things

  1135. of God,

  1136. you're thinking

  1137. on the things

  1138. of man.

  1139. And what

  1140. follows from

  1141. verse 34 to

  1142. the end of

  1143. the chapter

  1144. is an

  1145. expansion on

  1146. this statement

  1147. I believe,

  1148. where Jesus

  1149. says this is

  1150. what it means,

  1151. if you're going

  1152. to follow me,

  1153. this is what

  1154. it's going to

  1155. look like.

  1156. So having

  1157. looked at his

  1158. identity and

  1159. his mission,

  1160. finally,

  1161. what it means

  1162. to be a

  1163. disciple of

  1164. Jesus.

  1165. Verse 34,

  1166. then he

  1167. called the

  1168. crow to

  1169. him along

  1170. with his

  1171. disciples and

  1172. said,

  1173. whoever wants

  1174. to be my

  1175. disciple must

  1176. deny themselves

  1177. and take up

  1178. their cross

  1179. and follow

  1180. me.

  1181. I struggled

  1182. how to,

  1183. in my

  1184. preparation,

  1185. how to

  1186. sort of

  1187. express what

  1188. Jesus is

  1189. getting at

  1190. here,

  1191. but I

  1192. think it's

  1193. fairly

  1194. straightforward.

  1195. I was

  1196. getting myself

  1197. tied up

  1198. on knots.

  1199. Jesus is

  1200. presenting two

  1201. main ways

  1202. of life.

  1203. Essentially

  1204. he's saying,

  1205. you can live

  1206. for yourself

  1207. or you can

  1208. live for me.

  1209. Thy will be

  1210. done or my

  1211. will be done.

  1212. Following

  1213. Jesus Christ

  1214. costs you

  1215. costs you.

  1216. I wonder,

  1217. what does it

  1218. cost you so

  1219. far in your

  1220. life?

  1221. It costs

  1222. different people

  1223. different things,

  1224. but there is no

  1225. one who makes

  1226. it to glory,

  1227. having followed

  1228. the way of

  1229. righteousness,

  1230. that hasn't

  1231. had to pay

  1232. some cost.

  1233. We're not

  1234. saved by denying

  1235. ourselves,

  1236. we're not

  1237. saved by

  1238. suffering,

  1239. we're not

  1240. saved by

  1241. denying

  1242. anything.

  1243. We're saved

  1244. solely through

  1245. the work of

  1246. Christ,

  1247. but having been

  1248. made his,

  1249. we follow

  1250. after him

  1251. and that

  1252. costs us.

  1253. It might

  1254. cost you

  1255. financially,

  1256. it might

  1257. cost you

  1258. in relationships

  1259. with other

  1260. people who

  1261. say, I don't

  1262. want to be

  1263. with you

  1264. anymore,

  1265. I don't

  1266. want to

  1267. know you.

  1268. It might

  1269. cost you

  1270. comfort or

  1271. security,

  1272. and it

  1273. might even

  1274. cost you

  1275. the ultimate

  1276. sacrifice,

  1277. which is

  1278. your life.

  1279. You know,

  1280. we get a

  1281. prayer letter

  1282. of some

  1283. friends of

  1284. ours who

  1285. work in

  1286. Jordan,

  1287. and one

  1288. of their

  1289. friends,

  1290. I can't

  1291. say his

  1292. name because

  1293. they've asked

  1294. we don't

  1295. say his

  1296. name,

  1297. but he's

  1298. come to

  1299. faith from

  1300. Islam,

  1301. and he's

  1302. gotten text

  1303. from people

  1304. saying,

  1305. we're going

  1306. to kill

  1307. you,

  1308. we're going

  1309. to kill

  1310. you.

  1311. Now,

  1312. he's still

  1313. alive,

  1314. but that

  1315. man is

  1316. carrying around

  1317. with him

  1318. that burden

  1319. every day.

  1320. He is

  1321. paying a

  1322. cost,

  1323. and all

  1324. he has

  1325. to do

  1326. is,

  1327. if he

  1328. wanted it

  1329. to all

  1330. go away,

  1331. he could

  1332. say,

  1333. I repent,

  1334. I'm not

  1335. a Christian,

  1336. I go

  1337. back to

  1338. the Muslim

  1339. faith.

  1340. But because

  1341. he is

  1342. following

  1343. Christ,

  1344. he is

  1345. sharing in

  1346. Christ's

  1347. sufferings.

  1348. As Romans

  1349. 8 says,

  1350. having shared

  1351. in Christ's

  1352. sufferings,

  1353. we will

  1354. also share

  1355. in his

  1356. glory to

  1357. come.

  1358. See,

  1359. Jesus says,

  1360. I will

  1361. suffer,

  1362. I will

  1363. die,

  1364. but I

  1365. will

  1366. rise

  1367. again

  1368. in

  1369. three

  1370. days.

  1371. He

  1372. will

  1373. come

  1374. back

  1375. in

  1376. glory.

  1377. And

  1378. just as

  1379. sure

  1380. as

  1381. Christ's

  1382. resurrection

  1383. has

  1384. occurred,

  1385. so too

  1386. is it

  1387. sure

  1388. that

  1389. we

  1390. will

  1391. be

  1392. raised

  1393. with

  1394. him

  1395. in

  1396. glory.

  1397. And

  1398. he

  1399. goes

  1400. on

  1401. in

  1402. verse

  1403. 36,

  1404. for

  1405. whoever

  1406. wants

  1407. to save

  1408. their

  1409. life

  1410. will

  1411. lose

  1412. it,

  1413. but

  1414. whoever

  1415. loses

  1416. their

  1417. life

  1418. for

  1419. me

  1420. and

  1421. for

  1422. the

  1423. gospel

  1424. will

  1425. save

  1426. it.

  1427. In

  1428. other

  1429. words,

  1430. if you

  1431. try and

  1432. preserve

  1433. your

  1434. life,

  1435. if your

  1436. goal is

  1437. just to

  1438. have as

  1439. much as

  1440. you can

  1441. in this

  1442. life,

  1443. have

  1444. security,

  1445. and your

  1446. priority is

  1447. on you

  1448. and what

  1449. you want,

  1450. in the

  1451. end you

  1452. lose it

  1453. all.

  1454. But if

  1455. you give

  1456. me your

  1457. life,

  1458. you follow

  1459. me,

  1460. in the

  1461. end,

  1462. although you

  1463. will have

  1464. suffering and

  1465. you will

  1466. have pain

  1467. in this

  1468. world,

  1469. and trouble

  1470. in this

  1471. world,

  1472. and hassle,

  1473. you will

  1474. inherit

  1475. eternal

  1476. life.

  1477. In

  1478. verse 36,

  1479. let me

  1480. flick

  1481. there.

  1482. Verse 36,

  1483. where Christ

  1484. gives those

  1485. two rhetorical

  1486. questions.

  1487. What good

  1488. is it for

  1489. a man to

  1490. gain the

  1491. whole world

  1492. and yet

  1493. forfeit his

  1494. soul,

  1495. or what

  1496. can a

  1497. man give

  1498. in exchange

  1499. for his

  1500. soul?

  1501. It hardly

  1502. needs

  1503. explaining,

  1504. does it?

  1505. What good

  1506. is it if

  1507. you get

  1508. everything in

  1509. this life,

  1510. and in

  1511. the end

  1512. you end

  1513. up in

  1514. hell?

  1515. That's

  1516. sobering,

  1517. isn't it?

  1518. Do you

  1519. think there's

  1520. anyone in

  1521. hell who

  1522. takes comfort

  1523. from something

  1524. they owned

  1525. in this

  1526. life?

  1527. Do you

  1528. think there's

  1529. anyone who

  1530. thinks,

  1531. at least in

  1532. earth I

  1533. had X,

  1534. Y,

  1535. or Z?

  1536. there's

  1537. nothing more

  1538. important than

  1539. the salvation

  1540. of your

  1541. soul.

  1542. What could

  1543. possibly be

  1544. worth more

  1545. to you than

  1546. your very

  1547. self?

  1548. love?

  1549. And finally,

  1550. verse 38,

  1551. Jesus points

  1552. out that his

  1553. words will be

  1554. the dividing

  1555. line.

  1556. If anyone is

  1557. ashamed of me

  1558. and my words

  1559. in this

  1560. adulterous and

  1561. sinful generation,

  1562. the Son of

  1563. Man will be

  1564. ashamed of him

  1565. when he comes

  1566. in his

  1567. Father's glory.

  1568. There are

  1569. lots of

  1570. people who

  1571. like Jesus,

  1572. but let us

  1573. as his

  1574. people be

  1575. those who

  1576. listen to

  1577. him.

  1578. He doesn't

  1579. have a

  1580. mute button.

  1581. We must

  1582. listen to

  1583. what he

  1584. says.

  1585. And Jesus

  1586. is saying

  1587. that there

  1588. will be

  1589. lots of

  1590. people who

  1591. hear my

  1592. words and

  1593. they're ashamed

  1594. of them,

  1595. they don't

  1596. want to have

  1597. anything to

  1598. do with

  1599. them.

  1600. No, not

  1601. for me.

  1602. That's no

  1603. thanks.

  1604. They might be

  1605. even polite

  1606. about it,

  1607. but they're

  1608. just saying

  1609. no.

  1610. They mightn't

  1611. come out and

  1612. say that's

  1613. shameful, but

  1614. they won't

  1615. want anything

  1616. to do with

  1617. them.

  1618. And Jesus

  1619. is saying

  1620. if that's

  1621. where you

  1622. are at,

  1623. then when

  1624. I come

  1625. back, I

  1626. will treat

  1627. you the

  1628. same.

  1629. I won't

  1630. want anything

  1631. to do with

  1632. you.

  1633. Now bear

  1634. in mind

  1635. who Jesus

  1636. is speaking

  1637. to here.

  1638. Jesus is

  1639. speaking to

  1640. a crowd

  1641. of people.

  1642. This is

  1643. not Jesus

  1644. speaking to

  1645. his sheep,

  1646. saying you

  1647. ought to be

  1648. ashamed of

  1649. yourselves.

  1650. Get the

  1651. wrong end of

  1652. the stick.

  1653. But Christ

  1654. is giving a

  1655. solemn warning

  1656. that in order

  1657. to follow him,

  1658. it involves

  1659. denial of

  1660. self.

  1661. It involves

  1662. cost and

  1663. sacrifice.

  1664. We don't

  1665. want to fall

  1666. into an

  1667. extreme of

  1668. saying that

  1669. to be a

  1670. Christian, you

  1671. basically have

  1672. to get rid

  1673. of everything

  1674. you enjoy

  1675. in life,

  1676. and that

  1677. somehow makes

  1678. you godly.

  1679. I mean,

  1680. Jesus was

  1681. accused of

  1682. being a

  1683. drunkard

  1684. because he

  1685. enjoyed eating

  1686. and drinking.

  1687. For the

  1688. glory of

  1689. God.

  1690. That's not

  1691. what Jesus

  1692. is getting

  1693. at.

  1694. And again,

  1695. we don't

  1696. earn our

  1697. way to

  1698. heaven by

  1699. denying

  1700. ourselves

  1701. of things.

  1702. But what

  1703. Jesus is

  1704. getting at

  1705. is saying,

  1706. when you

  1707. come into

  1708. conflict with

  1709. this world

  1710. and you

  1711. have a

  1712. decision

  1713. between

  1714. me,

  1715. what I

  1716. say,

  1717. and what

  1718. the world

  1719. wants you

  1720. to do,

  1721. you choose

  1722. me,

  1723. whatever

  1724. it costs.

  1725. And no,

  1726. we don't

  1727. always get

  1728. it right,

  1729. do we?

  1730. I was,

  1731. yesterday we

  1732. were handing

  1733. out tracts

  1734. in

  1735. Valancholy,

  1736. we do

  1737. that on

  1738. Saturday

  1739. mornings,

  1740. and I

  1741. tell you

  1742. this because

  1743. I feel

  1744. it's,

  1745. I'm not

  1746. happy to

  1747. say it,

  1748. but we're

  1749. handing out

  1750. tracts,

  1751. and a guy

  1752. I used to

  1753. go to school

  1754. with,

  1755. Jack,

  1756. I barely

  1757. knew the

  1758. guy,

  1759. and he

  1760. was walking

  1761. up,

  1762. and I

  1763. saw him

  1764. coming,

  1765. and I

  1766. started

  1767. talking to

  1768. somebody

  1769. else,

  1770. and a

  1771. part of

  1772. me was

  1773. just

  1774. embarrassed.

  1775. I'm being

  1776. honest,

  1777. I'm not

  1778. proud of

  1779. that,

  1780. I'm not

  1781. saying that's

  1782. wrong,

  1783. I don't

  1784. think in

  1785. my mind

  1786. I said,

  1787. I'm ashamed

  1788. of the

  1789. gospel of

  1790. Jesus

  1791. Christ,

  1792. I'm going

  1793. to turn

  1794. away,

  1795. but a

  1796. part of

  1797. me felt

  1798. embarrassment.

  1799. I'm

  1800. sure I'm

  1801. not alone

  1802. in that,

  1803. but friends,

  1804. Christ is

  1805. gracious,

  1806. and he

  1807. will give

  1808. us

  1809. what we

  1810. need.

  1811. We fail,

  1812. I have

  1813. failed him,

  1814. I failed

  1815. him yesterday,

  1816. but he

  1817. loves you,

  1818. and he

  1819. will bring

  1820. you into

  1821. glory,

  1822. but let

  1823. us stand

  1824. by what

  1825. he says,

  1826. and I

  1827. thank God

  1828. for the

  1829. forgiveness

  1830. that we

  1831. have in

  1832. Christ,

  1833. I thank

  1834. God that

  1835. he bears

  1836. with us,

  1837. that he

  1838. remembers

  1839. that we

  1840. are with

  1841. dust,

  1842. he remembers

  1843. our frame,

  1844. and I

  1845. thank him

  1846. that he

  1847. will help

  1848. us to be

  1849. faithful unto

  1850. the end.

  1851. let's

  1852. pray.

  1853. Let's

  1854. pray.

  1855. blessed be

  1856. the God

  1857. and

  1858. Father of

  1859. our Lord

  1860. Jesus Christ,

  1861. according to

  1862. his great

  1863. mercy with

  1864. which he

  1865. has caused

  1866. us to

  1867. be born

  1868. again to

  1869. a living

  1870. hope,

  1871. through the

  1872. resurrection

  1873. of Jesus

  1874. Christ from

  1875. the dead,

  1876. to an

  1877. inheritance

  1878. that is

  1879. imperishable,

  1880. undefiled,

  1881. unfading,

  1882. kept in

  1883. heaven for

  1884. you,

  1885. who by

  1886. God's

  1887. power are

  1888. being guarded

  1889. through faith

  1890. for a

  1891. salvation ready

  1892. to be revealed

  1893. in the last

  1894. time.

  1895. In this

  1896. you rejoice,

  1897. though now

  1898. for a little

  1899. while,

  1900. if necessary,

  1901. you have been

  1902. grieved with

  1903. various trials,

  1904. so that the

  1905. tested

  1906. genuineness of

  1907. your faith,

  1908. more precious

  1909. than gold

  1910. that perishes

  1911. though it is

  1912. tested by

  1913. fire,

  1914. may be found

  1915. to result in

  1916. praise and

  1917. glory and

  1918. honor at the

  1919. revelation of

  1920. Jesus Christ.

  1921. Our

  1922. Father in

  1923. heaven,

  1924. we pray,

  1925. Lord,

  1926. that you

  1927. would impress

  1928. upon us the

  1929. words of

  1930. Christ.

  1931. Christ,

  1932. I pray,

  1933. Father,

  1934. for your

  1935. strength for

  1936. us as

  1937. your people

  1938. in this

  1939. adulterous and

  1940. wicked

  1941. generation

  1942. to stand

  1943. by your

  1944. word,

  1945. Lord.

  1946. Whatever it

  1947. may cost us,

  1948. Lord,

  1949. help us to

  1950. be faithful

  1951. to what you

  1952. have commanded

  1953. us,

  1954. what you

  1955. have taught

  1956. us in

  1957. your

  1958. scriptures.

  1959. And I

  1960. thank you,

  1961. Lord,

  1962. for your

  1963. grace,

  1964. which covers

  1965. our failures,

  1966. which covers

  1967. our sin.

  1968. And I

  1969. thank you,

  1970. Lord,

  1971. that Jesus

  1972. Christ,

  1973. Lord,

  1974. that for the

  1975. joy set

  1976. before him

  1977. endured the

  1978. shame of

  1979. the cross,

  1980. and that he

  1981. is now seated

  1982. at your

  1983. right hand.

  1984. Lord,

  1985. as we make

  1986. our way as

  1987. pilgrims in

  1988. this world,

  1989. as foreigners,

  1990. Lord,

  1991. I pray,

  1992. Lord,

  1993. that you

  1994. would keep

  1995. us from

  1996. the love

  1997. of this

  1998. world.

  1999. May we

  2000. love those

  2001. who are in

  2002. the world,

  2003. Lord,

  2004. and call

  2005. them to

  2006. you.

  2007. Help us,

  2008. Lord,

  2009. to be

  2010. witnesses

  2011. to those

  2012. who are

  2013. not yet

  2014. yours.

  2015. But,

  2016. Father,

  2017. help us

  2018. never,

  2019. Lord,

  2020. to be

  2021. ashamed

  2022. of your

  2023. word.

  2024. Give us

  2025. strength,

  2026. we pray,

  2027. Lord,

  2028. for the

  2029. days before

  2030. us.

  2031. And I

  2032. thank you

  2033. for your

  2034. word,

  2035. Lord,

  2036. and for

  2037. your grace

  2038. to us

  2039. this morning

  2040. in Christ

  2041. Jesus.

  2042. Amen.

  2043. Amen.

  2044. thank you

  2045. very much,

  2046. Kevin,

  2047. for bringing

  2048. God's

  2049. words to

  2050. us for

  2051. all your

  2052. preparation,

  2053. but also

  2054. for your

  2055. honesty,

  2056. and thank

  2057. God we

  2058. do have

  2059. a God

  2060. who does

  2061. forgive us.

  2062. I was

  2063. thinking as

  2064. you were

  2065. speaking just

  2066. about Peter,

  2067. and isn't it

  2068. wonderful that

  2069. we can look

  2070. back and have

  2071. the whole

  2072. canon of

  2073. scripture here,

  2074. for we can

  2075. have a

  2076. fuller

  2077. understanding.

  2078. I think of

  2079. Peter,

  2080. that even

  2081. though he

  2082. was able

  2083. to correctly

  2084. identify that

  2085. Jesus was

  2086. the Christ,

  2087. the one they

  2088. were waiting

  2089. for,

  2090. and yet he

  2091. didn't have

  2092. at that time

  2093. a full

  2094. understanding

  2095. of why

  2096. Jesus came,

  2097. nor perhaps

  2098. the full

  2099. idea of

  2100. following

  2101. Jesus,

  2102. but that as

  2103. we read

  2104. God's word,

  2105. we can see

  2106. of why

  2107. Jesus came,

  2108. and that

  2109. cost in

  2110. following,

  2111. and yet the

  2112. joy that we

  2113. have because

  2114. of following.

  2115. So thank

  2116. you very

  2117. much,

  2118. Kevin.

  2119. We're going

  2120. to stand

  2121. and sing,

  2122. can the

  2123. song be

  2124. brought up,

  2125. the final

  2126. song?

  2127. Yes,

  2128. we're going

  2129. to sing,

  2130. beneath the

  2131. cross of

  2132. Jesus,

  2133. I find a

  2134. place to

  2135. stand and

  2136. wonder at

  2137. such mercy

  2138. that calls

  2139. me as

  2140. I am,

  2141. because as

  2142. people,

  2143. when we

  2144. came to

  2145. know Jesus,

  2146. we recognized

  2147. that we

  2148. were

  2149. the

  2150. cross of

  2151. Jesus.

  2152. We

  2153. were

  2154. the

  2155. cross of

  2156. Jesus.

  2157. We

  2158. were

  2159. the

  2160. cross of

  2161. Jesus.

  2162. We

  2163. were

  2164. the
