  1. So it's the first book of John, chapter 5, verse 1-12, page 1228 in the Church Bibles.

    John 5:1–12

  2. So, 1 John, chapter 5, verse 1-12.

    1 John 5:1–12

  3. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves his child as well.

  4. This is how we know that we love the children of God, by loving God and carrying out his commands.

  5. This is love for God, to obey his commands.

  6. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world.

  7. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.

  8. Who is it that overcomes the world?

  9. Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

  10. This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ.

  11. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood.

  12. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

  13. For there are three that testify, the Spirit, the water, and the blood.

  14. And the three are in agreement.

  15. We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater, because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.

  16. Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart.

  17. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he does not believe the testimony God has given about his Son.

  18. And this is the testimony.

  19. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

  20. He who has the Son has life, but he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

  21. Amen.

  22. Thanks very much, Stephen.

  23. Well, let's keep our Bibles open as we come to a conclusion in these next couple of weeks in this letter of 1 John.

  24. Let's pray and ask for God's help.

  25. Amen.

  26. Our Father God, we thank you so much for your word.

  27. We thank you for its truth.

  28. And we thank you that it is relevant and speaks to us in our day and in our time.

  29. But Father, we need your help.

  30. We need the help of your Holy Spirit.

  31. And that we, together, would become more and more confident and assured

  32. of the life that we can have from you.

  33. So please help us, we ask in Jesus' name.

  34. Amen.

  35. Well, this week, if you were listening to the news, a painting by the artist Francis Bacon was sold for $50 million.

  36. There was another one that broke that record as well, but one of his sold for $50 million.

  37. Although he was a very talented and a very successful artist, his view of life was empty and unfulfilled.

  38. This is how he understood life to be.

  39. Man now realizes that he's an accident.

  40. That he is a completely futile being and that he has to play out the game without reason.

  41. He didn't believe in the person of Jesus.

  42. And for him, he had no purpose to life.

  43. He also said this, life has no reasons.

  44. A struggling through the gloom.

  45. And the senseless end of it is the insult of the tomb.

  46. For him, he says, we've come from nowhere and we are going nowhere.

  47. We simply live and we die and that's all there is to life.

  48. But that's not it.

  49. Have a look at verse 11 from our reading.

  50. And this is the testimony.

  51. God has given us eternal life.

  52. The God who created life, the universe.

  53. The God who sustains all of life.

  54. The God who provides us with life has promised us eternal life.

  55. And look where that life is to be found.

  56. Verse 11.

  57. This is the testimony.

  58. God has given us eternal life.

  59. And this life is in his Son.

  60. So we won't find life in ourselves.

  61. We won't find it in other things or in other people.

  62. We find life in the person of Jesus Christ.

  63. It's only when we are in relationship with Jesus.

  64. It's only when we join in and share in the love the Father has for the Son.

  65. And that the Son has for the Father.

  66. That we experience life in all its fullness.

  67. It is life in fellowship with God.

  68. Life is to be found in Jesus.

  69. And if we have Jesus, we have life.

  70. Look at verse 12.

  71. He who has the Son has life.

  72. He who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

  73. Now, we must grasp how serious this is.

  74. John has already made it clear in his Gospel.

  75. In John 3 verse 36, he said this.

    John 3:36

  76. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.

  77. But whoever rejects the Son will not see life.

  78. For God's wrath remains on him.

  79. You see, to live life without Jesus is to face the terrible reality of an eternal separation from God.

  80. And it's what Jesus calls hell.

  81. It's an eternity without the good gifts from God.

  82. The good things that we all enjoy like friendships, laughter, beauty.

  83. All of these are good gifts from the God who made the universe.

  84. And he gives it to his creation.

  85. But to live life without Jesus is in effect saying,

  86. I want an eternity without God.

  87. Without all the good things that he has to give.

  88. It is an eternity in hell.

  89. So can we see how essential it is that we have Jesus?

  90. Because there is no life to be had.

  91. No true life to be had outside of the person of Jesus.

  92. Look at verse 12 again.

  93. He who has the Son has life.

  94. He who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

  95. Now there's two big questions we're going to ask of our text this morning.

  96. The first one is this.

  97. How do I know I have this life?

  98. And the second is, how do I know this life is true?

  99. So how do I know I have this life?

  100. And second, how do I know this life is true?

  101. So the first question, how do I know I have this life?

  102. How do I know I have Jesus?

  103. Well the answer is this.

  104. We know because we have the experience of being born of God.

  105. Look at verse 1 of chapter 5.

  106. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.

  107. We get the same phrase a little bit further down in verse 4.

  108. Do you see it there?

  109. For everyone born of God overcomes the world.

  110. You see that little phrase, born of God, is to receive the life of Jesus.

  111. It's to receive the true life from God.

  112. On the 14th of December 1971, at 5.30am, I was born.

  113. Almost down the toilet, my mother told me.

  114. But I survived that.

  115. Now the thing is about my birth, I had no part in that decision.

  116. I did not decide that I would be born on that date and that I would have life.

  117. My birth was my parents' choice and decision.

  118. In the same way, eternal life that I have received from God is God's choice and God's initiative.

  119. It's God's birth of life in me.

  120. And that's what gives me absolute assurance that I have life in Jesus.

  121. Eternal life, life with him, rests not in my choice or my decision,

  122. but in me receiving by faith God's gift of life to me.

  123. This is something that God births in us.

  124. So how do I know I have this life?

  125. How can I be sure that I have been born of God and that I belong to him and that I have the life of Jesus?

  126. Well, we need to look at the experience of our lives.

  127. Three things that we should be experiencing in our lives day to day that tell us that we have this life.

  128. Here's the first one.

  129. We believe that Jesus is the Christ.

  130. First one again.

  131. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.

  132. Now Christ, Jesus Christ, that's a title.

  133. It means God's chosen saving king.

  134. So to believe that Jesus is the Christ is simply to entrust your life into the hands of our saviour Jesus.

  135. Because Jesus died for my sins, because Jesus rescues me from the punishment that I deserve,

  136. I will entrust my life into his life.

  137. Rather than run away from Jesus, I will run to Jesus.

  138. And this should be our experience on a day-to-day basis.

  139. Instead of hiding my sin, I will repent of my sin.

  140. I will place my full and total confidence in Jesus Christ, God's saving king.

  141. That is my experience.

  142. That I will be running to him as my saviour every day.

  143. So if I have been born of God, I will believe that Jesus is the Christ.

  144. The second experience that we should have in our life is that we will love the children of God.

  145. Look at verse 2.

  146. This is how we know that we love the children of God.

  147. By loving God and carrying out his commands.

  148. And what's his commands?

  149. Well, have a look back at chapter 3, verse 23.

  150. We know that we love the children of God by loving God and carrying out his commands.

  151. What's his command?

  152. Chapter 3, verse 23.

  153. And this is his command.

  154. To believe in the name of his son, Jesus Christ, which we've just looked at.

  155. And to love one another as he commanded us.

  156. You see, when we are born, every one of us, we carry with us the DNA of our parents.

  157. So it's quite natural that as I get older, I begin to look more like my father.

  158. Sometimes I'm told I sound like my father.

  159. Something of who he is makes me who I am.

  160. And in the same way, if we are born of God, something of who God is, his character, his very nature,

  161. is being seen and being worked and lived out through us.

  162. Because God is love, those who are born of God will also love.

  163. That is the primary identifying mark that we are his.

  164. So look at chapter 4, verse 7.

  165. Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.

  166. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.

  167. So let's just stop a minute, let's pause and let's think about that.

  168. Let's ask ourselves, are we loving others deliberately and intentionally?

  169. Rather than self-centred, are we becoming self-sacrificing?

  170. Because love means, I will embrace discomfort for the comfort of others.

  171. Love means, I will accept inconvenience in my life for the encouragement of others.

  172. Love means, I will reject me time.

  173. In fact, there is no longer any me time.

  174. It becomes other time.

  175. I will serve others.

  176. Are we deliberately and intentionally moving from self-centred living

  177. to self-sacrificing living?

  178. If we don't desire, if we are not praying for this,

  179. if we are not displaying this kind of love,

  180. then we are not born of God.

  181. So we should experience a running to Jesus, believing in him.

  182. We should experience a love for other people.

  183. And third, we should experience a love to obey God's commands.

  184. Look at verse 3 of chapter 5.

  185. We've talked about loving others.

  186. Well, verse 3, this is love for God.

  187. To obey his commands.

  188. To obey his commands.

  189. Now, parents have commands for their children.

  190. I'm sure all of you, if you have children,

  191. you've got certain rules that you have in your household.

  192. Not to spoil their fun,

  193. but to actually protect their life.

  194. So a parent who sets no boundaries for their child

  195. and lets their child do whatever they like,

  196. if you want to go outside until 10 o'clock at night,

  197. even though you're only six,

  198. that's okay.

  199. For example.

  200. It's not a loving parent.

  201. They are a careless parent.

  202. They set rules and boundaries

  203. and give commands to their children

  204. because they love their children

  205. and they want their children to enjoy life,

  206. to be protected.

  207. And if we are born of God,

  208. we have a Father who has given us commands for our good.

  209. Not to spoil our fun,

  210. but so that we can enjoy life with him

  211. as it should be.

  212. So the things that he calls us to do,

  213. the life he calls us to live,

  214. is for our best and for our good.

  215. In fact, if we are born of God,

  216. God's commands will become to us a delight and a joy.

  217. Look at verse 3 again.

  218. This is love for God,

  219. to obey his commands.

  220. And his commands are not burdensome.

  221. How many times have we ever heard rules

  222. not being a burden?

  223. We tend to think of rules

  224. and God's commands to us as a burden.

  225. But if you are obeying God

  226. because it's a duty to perform,

  227. if we obey God because we're doing it

  228. because we fear him punishing us,

  229. then we've completely misunderstood.

  230. We don't have the life of God.

  231. Children of God obey not to earn acceptance,

  232. but because we have acceptance.

  233. We obey not to gain life,

  234. but because we have already received life in Jesus.

  235. Our obedience to God is an expression,

  236. it's an overflow to say,

  237. thank you so much for the life that you have given me.

  238. And I want to enjoy the life that you have given me.

  239. You see, if we understand that God's commands

  240. bring joy and happiness to his children,

  241. then obedience will be a pleasure and a delight.

  242. So think through that with me for a moment.

  243. As we read God's word,

  244. because that's where we will hear his voice,

  245. and that's where we will hear his commands,

  246. as we read it,

  247. and it challenges us.

  248. Do we go,

  249. don't want to do that?

  250. Don't like that?

  251. Or do we stop and go,

  252. this is a pleasure and a delight.

  253. Because I am his child,

  254. this is good for me,

  255. and this is right for me.

  256. If we are born of God,

  257. we will be obeying God.

  258. That will be our experience.

  259. Now if we believe Jesus is the Christ,

  260. if we love the children of God,

  261. if we obey God's commands,

  262. that experience tells me

  263. that I have been born of God

  264. and that I have eternal life from God.

  265. In fact, it means,

  266. as he tells us in verse 4,

  267. he explains it in another way.

  268. He says,

  269. you've overcome the world.

  270. The same thing,

  271. but in another way.

  272. Look at verse 4.

  273. For everyone born of God

  274. overcomes the world.

  275. This is the victory

  276. that has overcome the world,

  277. even our faith.

  278. Now we've seen this already

  279. in 1 John,

  280. that when he talks about the world,

  281. he's talking about people

  282. who are in opposition to God.

  283. So the world

  284. is those who reject

  285. and ignore God's Son,

  286. Jesus Christ.

  287. But if we've been born of God,

  288. it means we've overcome the world.

  289. Instead of rejecting Jesus,

  290. we now entrust our life to Jesus.

  291. Instead of loving self,

  292. we now love others.

  293. Instead of disobeying God,

  294. we now want to obey God.

  295. This is the experience

  296. of being born again.

  297. It's a complete transformation of life.

  298. We're not any longer

  299. like the world.

  300. We're not the same as the world.

  301. We don't blend into the world.

  302. We stand out as different

  303. from the world

  304. because we have overcome the world.

  305. And it's all,

  306. verse 4,

  307. the end of verse 4,

  308. by faith,

  309. by our trust in Jesus Christ.

  310. As it says in verse 5,

  311. who is it that overcomes the world?

  312. Only he who believes

  313. that Jesus is the Son of God.

  314. So how do I know I have this life?

  315. How do I know I have the gift

  316. of eternal life

  317. and Jesus living within me?

  318. Answer,

  319. I have the experience

  320. of being born again.

  321. The second big question

  322. that we're going to ask of this text,

  323. and we'll be a bit quicker

  324. through this section,

  325. is how do I know I have

  326. that this life that I have is true?

  327. How do I know that this life

  328. is true?

  329. Well, answer,

  330. we have the evidence

  331. of God's testimony.

  332. You see,

  333. the life that is found in Jesus

  334. is not made up.

  335. This isn't a fairy tale.

  336. It's true.

  337. It's not a legend or lies.

  338. He wants us to know

  339. that this is true

  340. and we can depend upon it.

  341. So let's look at the evidence

  342. that he gives us.

  343. Look at verse 6.

  344. This is the one

  345. who came by water

  346. and blood,

  347. Jesus Christ.

  348. He did not come by water only,

  349. but by water and blood.

  350. And it is the Spirit

  351. who testifies

  352. because the Spirit

  353. is the truth.

  354. Wait, I'm sure

  355. you're scratching your head

  356. as I did

  357. the first few times

  358. I read this.

  359. What's all this about?

  360. Water,

  361. blood,

  362. spirit?

  363. How is that evidence?

  364. Well, look at verse 7.

  365. For there are three

  366. that testify,

  367. the Spirit,

  368. the water,

  369. and the blood.

  370. And the three

  371. are in agreement.

  372. Now I think the best way

  373. to help us through this

  374. is if we could imagine

  375. a court scene.

  376. And the question

  377. that is being asked

  378. is this,

  379. how do we know

  380. that the life of Jesus

  381. is true?

  382. Where's the evidence

  383. that Jesus is true?

  384. And the life

  385. that he has promised

  386. to give us

  387. is real.

  388. Well, three witnesses

  389. are called to the stand.

  390. The water,

  391. the blood,

  392. and the Spirit.

  393. And so what we're called

  394. to do is to listen

  395. to their story,

  396. to examine their story,

  397. and as we listen,

  398. you will see

  399. that this is true,

  400. the life of Jesus

  401. is true.

  402. So the first witness

  403. to take the stand

  404. is water,

  405. the voice

  406. of the Father.

  407. Look at verse 6 again.

  408. This is the one

  409. who came by water

  410. and blood,

  411. Jesus Christ.

  412. What's that referring to?

  413. Well, remember,

  414. the public ministry

  415. of Jesus

  416. started with

  417. his baptism.

  418. That's where,

  419. if you like,

  420. Jesus was fully

  421. and truly

  422. introduced

  423. to the world.

  424. So have a look with me

  425. back at Mark's Gospel,

  426. chapter 1.

  427. Keep your finger

  428. in 1 John 5

  429. and go back

  430. to Mark's Gospel,

  431. chapter 1.

  432. Mark 1,

    Mark 1:9–11

  433. verse 9 to 11.

  434. So it's saying

  435. that Jesus came

  436. by water.

  437. He was introduced

  438. to the world

  439. through his baptism.

  440. Mark 1,

    Mark 1:9

  441. verse 9.

  442. At that time,

  443. Jesus came

  444. from Nazareth

  445. and Galilee.

  446. You all there?

  447. Mark 1,

    Mark 1:9

  448. verse 9.

  449. Let's read again.

  450. At that time,

  451. Jesus came

  452. from Nazareth

  453. and Galilee

  454. and was baptized

  455. by John

  456. in the Jordan.

  457. As Jesus

  458. was coming up

  459. out of the water,

  460. he saw heaven

  461. being torn open

  462. and the Spirit

  463. descending on him

  464. like a dove.

  465. and the voice

  466. came from heaven,

  467. you are my Son

  468. whom I love.

  469. With you

  470. I am well pleased.

  471. The Father declares

  472. from heaven

  473. in an audible voice,

  474. he declares to us all

  475. who Jesus is.

  476. You are my Son

  477. whom I love.

  478. With you

  479. I am well pleased.

  480. A clear identification

  481. of who Jesus is.

  482. To be identified

  483. as the Son

  484. was to be a position

  485. of absolute power

  486. and supreme authority.

  487. This was Jesus,

  488. the God-man

  489. coming to earth

  490. and beginning

  491. his public ministry.

  492. The one who came

  493. to give life.

  494. So the testimony

  495. of water

  496. is to say,

  497. listen to the voice

  498. of the Father.

  499. God himself

  500. speaking

  501. about who Jesus is.

  502. Listen to his voice

  503. and you will know

  504. that it is true.

  505. The second witness

  506. to take the stand

  507. is the blood.

  508. The work of the Son.

  509. Go back to

  510. 1 John chapter 5.

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  511. We read there

  512. in verse 6,

  513. 1 John chapter 5

    1 John 5:6

  514. verse 6,

  515. this is the one

  516. who came by water

  517. and blood

  518. Jesus Christ.

  519. He did not come

  520. by water only

  521. but by water

  522. and blood.

  523. Blood

  524. always

  525. refers to

  526. the death

  527. of Jesus,

  528. his sacrifice

  529. on the cross

  530. because that was

  531. the very

  532. mission of Jesus.

  533. The reason

  534. Jesus came,

  535. the primary reason

  536. was that he would

  537. die

  538. on the cross.

  539. So in 1 John

    1 John 1:7

  540. chapter 1

  541. verse 7,

  542. we're reminded

  543. of what the blood

  544. achieves for us,

  545. what his death

  546. achieves for us.

  547. 1 John chapter 1

    1 John 1:7

  548. verse 7,

  549. but if we walk

  550. in the light

  551. as he is in the light,

  552. sorry,

  553. I'm rushing ahead

  554. of you there.

  555. 1 John chapter 1

    1 John 1:7

  556. verse 7,

  557. if we walk in the light

  558. as he is in the light,

  559. we have fellowship

  560. with one another

  561. and the blood

  562. of Jesus,

  563. his son

  564. purifies us

  565. from all sin.

  566. Or chapter 2

  567. verse 2,

  568. he is the atoning

  569. sacrifice

  570. for our sins

  571. and not only

  572. for ours

  573. but also

  574. for the sins

  575. of the whole world.

  576. The blood

  577. of Jesus,

  578. his death

  579. on the cross

  580. was not like

  581. any other death.

  582. It was unique

  583. in the history

  584. of the world.

  585. It is the means

  586. by which we can

  587. be forgiven.

  588. It's the means

  589. by which we can

  590. come in

  591. and enjoy life

  592. with God.

  593. And how do we know

  594. that's all true?

  595. Well,

  596. because we know

  597. that three days later

  598. Jesus rose

  599. from the grave

  600. proving

  601. that his blood,

  602. his death

  603. on the cross

  604. was the way

  605. in which sins

  606. would be dealt

  607. with forever.

  608. So the blood

  609. comes and he

  610. takes the stand

  611. and it's as if

  612. he's saying,

  613. look,

  614. at Jesus

  615. on the cross.

  616. Look at the work

  617. of the Son

  618. and you will know

  619. that this Jesus

  620. is true.

  621. The third witness

  622. to take the stand

  623. is the Spirit.

  624. The Spirit of truth.

  625. We read in verse 6,

  626. the end of verse 6

  627. of chapter 5,

  628. and it is the Spirit

  629. who testifies

  630. because the Spirit

  631. is the truth.

  632. You see,

  633. the Spirit of God

  634. takes what is true

  635. about Jesus

  636. and applies it

  637. to our hearts.

  638. Have a look with me

  639. back,

  640. just one more reference.

  641. Again,

  642. keep your finger there

  643. in 1 John 5

  644. and go to

  645. John's Gospel

  646. chapter 15.

  647. This tells us

  648. something about

  649. the role

  650. and the ministry

  651. of the Holy Spirit.

  652. John's Gospel

  653. chapter 15

  654. and verse 26.

  655. John 15

    John 15:26

  656. verse 26.

  657. John 15

    John 15:26

  658. verse 26.

  659. When the

  660. counsellor

  661. comes

  662. whom I will

  663. send to you

  664. from the Father.

  665. And who's

  666. that counsellor?

  667. He is the Spirit

  668. of Truth

  669. who goes out

  670. from the Father.

  671. He will testify

  672. about me.

  673. He will speak

  674. about me.

  675. Jump over

  676. to chapter 16

  677. verse 13.

  678. But when He,

  679. the Spirit

  680. of Truth,

  681. comes,

  682. He will guide

  683. you into

  684. all truth.

  685. He will not

  686. speak on His

  687. own.

  688. He will speak

  689. only what He

  690. hears and He

  691. will tell you

  692. what is yet

  693. to come.

  694. He will bring

  695. glory to me

  696. by taking

  697. what is mine

  698. and making

  699. it known

  700. to you.

  701. Do you see

  702. the work

  703. of the Spirit?

  704. The Spirit

  705. of God

  706. takes the

  707. truth about

  708. Jesus

  709. and He

  710. puts it

  711. into our

  712. hearts

  713. to convince

  714. us and

  715. to reassure

  716. us that

  717. Jesus is

  718. true.

  719. The Spirit

  720. acts like

  721. the final

  722. concluding piece

  723. of the evidence.

  724. He takes

  725. everything that

  726. has been

  727. said about

  728. Jesus

  729. and He

  730. drives it

  731. deep into

  732. our hearts.

  733. He testifies

  734. to us

  735. that this

  736. is true.

  737. So the

  738. testimony is

  739. listen to

  740. the voice

  741. of the

  742. Father

  743. speaking at

  744. Jesus'

  745. baptism.

  746. Look at

  747. the work

  748. of the

  749. Son of

  750. Jesus

  751. on the

  752. cross.

  753. Learn

  754. from the

  755. truth of

  756. the Spirit

  757. and you

  758. will know

  759. that this

  760. is true.

  761. So we

  762. have heard

  763. the evidence,

  764. the water,

  765. the blood

  766. and the

  767. Spirit

  768. taken

  769. together

  770. they show

  771. us that

  772. this life

  773. is true.

  774. Verse 9,

  775. 1 John

    1 John 5:9

  776. chapter 5

  777. verse 9,

  778. we accept

  779. man's

  780. testimony

  781. but God's

  782. testimony

  783. is greater

  784. because it

  785. is the

  786. testimony

  787. of God

  788. which He

  789. has given

  790. about His

  791. Son.

  792. Yes,

  793. man's

  794. testimony

  795. is important.

  796. That's how

  797. he started

  798. off the

  799. letter,

  800. talking about

  801. the eyewitness

  802. accounts.

  803. Man's

  804. testimony

  805. is important.

  806. What we

  807. experience

  808. about Jesus

  809. is vital

  810. but,

  811. verse 9,

  812. God's

  813. testimony

  814. is greater.

  815. It's like

  816. God calls

  817. Himself

  818. to the

  819. witness stand.

  820. God puts

  821. Himself

  822. on trial

  823. and God

  824. gives the

  825. evidence.

  826. You see,

  827. just think

  828. about the

  829. whole story

  830. of Jesus.

  831. Nobody

  832. could ever

  833. make this

  834. up.

  835. Nobody

  836. could ever

  837. invent a

  838. story or

  839. create a

  840. philosophy

  841. that matches

  842. the truth

  843. about Jesus.

  844. No one

  845. could ever

  846. come up

  847. with the

  848. idea of

  849. God,

  850. Father,

  851. Son,

  852. and Spirit

  853. giving

  854. testimony

  855. to us.

  856. This is

  857. not something

  858. that just

  859. suddenly comes

  860. up in our

  861. imagination.

  862. This is

  863. the very

  864. revelation

  865. of God.

  866. Jesus

  867. is not

  868. our idea.

  869. He is

  870. God's

  871. Son.

  872. God

  873. Himself

  874. come to

  875. earth and

  876. God has

  877. given

  878. testimony

  879. about it.

  880. So,

  881. don't believe

  882. it because

  883. I say it.

  884. don't believe

  885. it because

  886. it sounds

  887. like a

  888. nice story.

  889. Believe it

  890. because God

  891. has said

  892. it.

  893. Verse 10,

  894. anyone who

  895. believes in

  896. the Son of

  897. God has

  898. this testimony

  899. in his

  900. heart.

  901. Anyone who

  902. does not

  903. believe God

  904. has made

  905. him out to

  906. be a liar

  907. because he

  908. has not

  909. believed the

  910. testimony God

  911. has given

  912. about his

  913. Son.

  914. there is

  915. no greater

  916. word to

  917. have than

  918. the word

  919. of God

  920. to our

  921. lives.

  922. So,

  923. how do I

  924. know about

  925. the eternal

  926. life in

  927. Jesus?

  928. I have

  929. the experience

  930. of being

  931. born again.

  932. How do I

  933. know this

  934. life in

  935. Jesus is

  936. true?

  937. I have

  938. the evidence

  939. of God's

  940. testimony.

  941. We can be

  942. absolutely

  943. sure and

  944. fully

  945. convinced

  946. of the

  947. life that

  948. we have.

  949. Let's pray

  950. together.

  951. Amen.

  952. Our

  953. Father God,

  954. we recognize

  955. that we

  956. go into

  957. a world

  958. that is

  959. opposed to

  960. you,

  961. a world

  962. that does

  963. not believe

  964. that Jesus

  965. is the

  966. life,

  967. a world

  968. that will

  969. shirk their

  970. shoulders and

  971. turn away

  972. from truth.

  973. So,

  974. would you

  975. please encourage

  976. us from what

  977. we've heard

  978. that we can

  979. go with

  980. absolute

  981. confidence

  982. and complete

  983. assurance

  984. that this

  985. life is

  986. real and

  987. that this

  988. life is

  989. true.

  990. And we

  991. pray that

  992. you would

  993. give us

  994. opportunity

  995. to show

  996. how it

  997. is true,

  998. to point

  999. out the

  1000. evidence

  1001. so that

  1002. others may

  1003. be convinced

  1004. and turned

  1005. towards you.

  1006. and we

  1007. pray that

  1008. even in

  1009. our own

  1010. lives,

  1011. that as

  1012. we believe

  1013. in Jesus,

  1014. as we

  1015. love others

  1016. and as we

  1017. obey his

  1018. commands,

  1019. that even

  1020. through these

  1021. very actions,

  1022. people would

  1023. see that

  1024. you are

  1025. real and

  1026. that the

  1027. life that

  1028. you have

  1029. come to

  1030. give is

  1031. true.

  1032. Father,

  1033. encourage us

  1034. and build

  1035. us up in

  1036. our faith,

  1037. we pray,

  1038. giving us

  1039. courage to

  1040. speak of

  1041. you and

  1042. to live

  1043. for you.

  1044. We pray

  1045. this in

  1046. Jesus'

  1047. name.

  1048. Amen.

  1049. We're

  1050. going to

  1051. sing together

  1052. a great

  1053. hymn as

  1054. we've been

  1055. thinking about

  1056. the life of

  1057. Jesus in

  1058. Christ alone

  1059. my hope

  1060. is found.

  1061. He is my

  1062. light,

  1063. my strength

  1064. and my

  1065. song.

  1066. Here,

  1067. in the

  1068. love of

  1069. Christ,

  1070. I stand.

  1071. Let's

  1072. stand together

  1073. then as

  1074. we sing.
