  1. So we're going to read from Luke chapter 12 from verse 35.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  2. Luke chapter 12 verse 35.

    Luke 12:35

  3. It's page 1045 in the Church Bible.

  4. Be dressed, ready for service, and keep your lamps burning, like men waiting for their

  5. master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks, they can immediately

  6. open the door for him.

  7. It'll be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.

  8. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table,

  9. and will come and wait on them.

  10. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second

  11. or third watch of the night.

  12. But understand this, if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming,

  13. he would not have let his house be broken into.

  14. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect

  15. him.

  16. Peter asked, Lord, are you telling this parable to us or to everyone?

  17. The Lord answered, who then is the faithful and wise manager whom the master puts in charge

  18. of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?

  19. It'll be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.

  20. I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

  21. But suppose the servant says to himself, my master is taking a long time in coming, and

  22. he then begins to beat the men servants and maid servants and to eat and drink and get drunk.

  23. Well, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him, and an hour

  24. he is not aware of.

  25. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

  26. That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his

  27. master wants will be beaten with many blows.

  28. But to one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.

  29. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded.

  30. And from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

  31. Thank you, Ralph.

  32. Well, this morning we're starting, if you look in your summer term program, a short series

  33. on four simple parables from Luke's Gospel.

  34. And all of them have a particular theme on the subject of the return of Jesus.

  35. So, Jesus coming again.

  36. So, how should that shape and change us in our lives today?

  37. And the first one that we're looking at this morning is the return of the King.

  38. So, let's ask God's help as we pray together.

  39. Let's pray.

  40. Let's pray.

  41. Father, we thank you for your word.

  42. We thank you for these parables in Luke's Gospel.

  43. Stories that Jesus told to explain to us something of his return.

  44. We pray that as we read and as we listen this morning, that these stories would shape and change us.

  45. And show us how we are to live in the light of your return.

  46. We pray, Father, that we would be filled with hope.

  47. And that our lives will be put in order.

  48. So that we are living as faithful servants waiting for you.

  49. Father, please help us, then we ask in Jesus' name.

  50. Amen.

  51. Well, I'm not going to start just yet, actually.

  52. I've got some sheets here.

  53. I've got some sheets here.

  54. Thank you.

  55. Thank you.

  56. So, you'll see in the summer term program, anyway, we'll be looking at four parables in Luke,

  57. in June and then come July and August

  58. we will have different speakers from some of our partnering churches

  59. so you can be praying for them as well as they prepare and get ready for that.

  60. Then on Wednesdays we'll be following up on our talks

  61. for the month of June so the parable we look at this morning

  62. we'll be looking at that next Wednesday evening in our home groups.

  63. Thanks very much Maria for your help there.

  64. So let's look at Luke chapter 12, 35 to 48.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  65. The first heading we have there is what time, any time?

  66. Well whenever my parents had to go out for an evening

  67. or if they were going away for a few days

  68. my only question was this

  69. what time will you be back?

  70. Because as a teenager I quickly learned the benefits

  71. of knowing the exact time the parents would get home

  72. it's valuable information.

  73. But my parents were also quick learners

  74. they soon learned that the best answer

  75. to give their scheming teenage son was this

  76. expect us any time.

  77. In other words you know we will be back

  78. so make sure when we do get back

  79. the house is in order.

  80. In a sense that's exactly what Jesus is saying to us here

  81. in verse 40.

  82. Look at verse 40 with me.

  83. You also must be ready

  84. because the son of man, that's Jesus

  85. will come at an hour

  86. when you do not expect him.

  87. The promise of Jesus' return

  88. is not to try and catch us out

  89. but to make sure we are ready.

  90. It's a gracious advance notice

  91. for us to get things in order.

  92. He is saying to us

  93. you know I will return

  94. so make sure when I do return

  95. you are ready.

  96. Look how Jesus describes

  97. his return

  98. in verse 40 again.

  99. Let's read verse 40.

  100. You must be ready

  101. because the son of man

  102. will come.

  103. The son of man

  104. is a title.

  105. It was Jesus' favourite way

  106. of referring to himself.

  107. And the son of man

  108. it doesn't just describe

  109. a person

  110. but it actually describes

  111. a great event

  112. that is going to take place

  113. which the son of man

  114. is at the very centre of.

  115. So to get a bit of background

  116. to this we need to go back

  117. to Daniel chapter 7

    Daniel 7:13

  118. verse 13 and 14.

  119. So keep your finger in Luke

  120. and have a flick back

  121. to Daniel chapter 7

    Daniel 7:13

  122. verse 13 and 14.

  123. The song that we didn't know earlier

  124. is actually based on these verses

  125. that's why we sang it.

  126. So Daniel chapter 7

    Daniel 7:13

  127. verse 13 and 14.

  128. Here Daniel has a vision

  129. of what will take place

  130. at the very end

  131. and the person

  132. at the very centre

  133. of that vision

  134. is the son of man

  135. and it tells us

  136. what it will be like.

  137. So Daniel chapter 7

    Daniel 7:13

  138. verse 13.

  139. He says,

  140. In my vision at night

  141. I looked

  142. and there before me

  143. was one like

  144. a son of man

  145. coming with the clouds

  146. of heaven.

  147. He approached

  148. the ancient of days

  149. that is God

  150. and was led

  151. into his presence.

  152. He was given

  153. authority,

  154. glory

  155. and sovereign power.

  156. All peoples,

  157. nations

  158. and men and women

  159. of every language

  160. worshipped him.

  161. His dominion

  162. is an everlasting dominion

  163. that will not pass away

  164. and his kingdom

  165. is one that will

  166. never

  167. be destroyed.

  168. You see in those

  169. few verses

  170. it describes

  171. the coming

  172. of God's king

  173. with absolute power

  174. and supreme authority.

  175. So back in Luke

  176. when Jesus says

  177. I am the son of man

  178. Jesus is saying

  179. I am

  180. that king.

  181. I will return

  182. and when I return

  183. I will restore order,

  184. establish peace

  185. and execute

  186. justice.

  187. justice.

  188. I am this

  189. glorious king

  190. who is to come.

  191. I'm sure we've been

  192. all aware

  193. of the investigations

  194. into FIFA

  195. over these last

  196. couple of weeks.

  197. No one it seems

  198. is off limits.

  199. All the facts

  200. are being made known.

  201. Every bribe,

  202. every corrupt payment

  203. is being exposed.

  204. Well when the son of man

  205. comes in all his glory

  206. no one

  207. and nothing

  208. will be off limits.

  209. He will expose

  210. every wrong.

  211. He will correct

  212. every injustice

  213. and he will establish

  214. his eternal kingdom.

  215. Now Jesus is saying

  216. we must be ready

  217. for the return

  218. of the king

  219. because when this king

  220. comes

  221. it will come

  222. as a surprise.

  223. Look how Jesus

  224. describes it

  225. in verse 35

  226. of Luke 12.

  227. he says it will be

  228. a surprise.

  229. He says be dressed

  230. ready for service.

  231. Keep your lamps

  232. burning.

  233. Like men

  234. waiting for their

  235. master to return

  236. from a wedding banquet

  237. so that when he

  238. comes and knocks

  239. they can immediately

  240. open the door

  241. for him.

  242. Jesus can come

  243. at any time.

  244. like the master

  245. who went to the wedding

  246. he could return

  247. surprisingly early

  248. or he could return

  249. surprisingly late.

  250. We might not know

  251. when

  252. would it be

  253. tomorrow

  254. next week

  255. will it be

  256. in five years

  257. we do not know

  258. when

  259. but we do know

  260. he will.

  261. and the good

  262. news is

  263. if we are

  264. ready for

  265. the king's

  266. return

  267. there is a

  268. wonderful banquet

  269. that awaits us

  270. verse 37

  271. it will be

  272. good for

  273. those servants

  274. whose master

  275. finds them

  276. watching when

  277. he comes.

  278. I tell you

  279. the truth

  280. he will

  281. dress himself

  282. to serve

  283. and will

  284. have them

  285. recline

  286. at the table

  287. and will

  288. come

  289. and wait

  290. on them.

  291. What a wonderful

  292. picture

  293. that is.

  294. Those who are

  295. ready

  296. for the return

  297. of king

  298. Jesus

  299. will be

  300. welcomed

  301. into his

  302. eternal kingdom.

  303. They will be

  304. seated

  305. at the

  306. master's

  307. table

  308. and served

  309. by the

  310. master

  311. himself

  312. dining

  313. with the

  314. king

  315. of kings

  316. at his

  317. eternal

  318. banquet

  319. verse 38

  320. it will be

  321. good

  322. for those

  323. servants

  324. whose

  325. master

  326. finds them

  327. ready

  328. even if

  329. he comes

  330. in the

  331. second

  332. or third

  333. watch

  334. of the

  335. night.

  336. Great

  337. blessing

  338. awaits

  339. those who

  340. are ready

  341. for the

  342. return

  343. of the

  344. king.

  345. So here

  346. is the

  347. big question

  348. are we

  349. ready?

  350. Are we

  351. ready for

  352. the return?

  353. verse 39

  354. but understand

  355. this

  356. if the

  357. owner of

  358. the house

  359. had known

  360. at what

  361. hour the

  362. thief was

  363. coming

  364. he would

  365. not have

  366. let his

  367. house be

  368. broken into.

  369. When we

  370. lived in

  371. Dublin

  372. don't worry

  373. Kim I hope

  374. it doesn't

  375. happen to

  376. you

  377. when we

  378. lived in

  379. Dublin

  380. our home

  381. was broken

  382. into twice

  383. and each

  384. time it

  385. was a

  386. complete

  387. surprise.

  388. Nobody

  389. told us

  390. when the

  391. thieves were

  392. going to

  393. come.

  394. We didn't

  395. get a

  396. letter in

  397. the door

  398. saying we're

  399. going to

  400. be around

  401. Sunday

  402. night

  403. 7 o'clock.

  404. But that's

  405. the point

  406. isn't it?

  407. Thieves

  408. don't have a

  409. habit of

  410. telling you

  411. when they

  412. are going

  413. to come.

  414. You just

  415. have to be

  416. ready and

  417. make sure

  418. your house

  419. is secure.

  420. In the

  421. same way

  422. Jesus has

  423. not told us

  424. when he

  425. will return

  426. but that

  427. he will

  428. return.

  429. And the

  430. promise of

  431. his return

  432. is not to

  433. try and

  434. catch us

  435. out but

  436. to make

  437. sure we

  438. are ready.

  439. It is a

  440. gracious

  441. advance

  442. notice for

  443. us to

  444. get things

  445. in order

  446. before it

  447. is too

  448. late.

  449. So the

  450. return of

  451. Jesus is

  452. going to

  453. come.

  454. Now to

  455. help us

  456. think through

  457. what it

  458. means to

  459. be ready

  460. for Jesus

  461. he introduces

  462. us to

  463. two people.

  464. In the

  465. second part

  466. of this

  467. parable we

  468. have the

  469. faithful servant

  470. and an

  471. unfaithful

  472. servant.

  473. So look at

  474. verse 41.

  475. Peter asked

  476. Lord are you

  477. telling this

  478. parable to

  479. us or to

  480. everyone?

  481. Who is it

  482. that needs

  483. to be

  484. ready?

  485. Who is

  486. this message

  487. for?

  488. Well while

  489. it may apply

  490. to everyone

  491. and I think

  492. there is an

  493. application to

  494. everyone,

  495. it is

  496. especially

  497. directed at

  498. those who

  499. claim to

  500. be disciples

  501. of the

  502. Lord Jesus.

  503. So let's

  504. look at these

  505. two characters

  506. in turn.

  507. First we

  508. have the

  509. faithful servant

  510. and the

  511. question we

  512. need to be

  513. asking ourselves

  514. is am I

  515. like this

  516. faithful servant?

  517. Verse 42.

  518. The Lord

  519. answered who

  520. then is the

  521. faithful and

  522. wise manager

  523. whom the

  524. master puts

  525. in charge of

  526. his servants

  527. to give them

  528. their food

  529. allowance at

  530. the proper

  531. time?

  532. Now the

  533. question is

  534. quite simple.

  535. when the

  536. master returns

  537. will he

  538. find the

  539. servant

  540. manager

  541. behaving in

  542. a way that

  543. is fitting

  544. to his

  545. position?

  546. You see

  547. the head

  548. servant

  549. has the

  550. special task

  551. of making

  552. sure that

  553. all the rest

  554. of the

  555. servants are

  556. ready for

  557. the return

  558. of the

  559. master.

  560. The servant

  561. manager is

  562. responsible for

  563. the other

  564. servants.

  565. it's his

  566. job to

  567. keep them

  568. awake at

  569. the various

  570. watches of

  571. the night.

  572. It's his

  573. job to

  574. make sure

  575. they're well

  576. fed and

  577. that they're

  578. strong and

  579. they're keeping

  580. an eye out.

  581. If the

  582. servant

  583. manager is

  584. not ready

  585. then how

  586. are the

  587. others going

  588. to be

  589. ready?

  590. So the

  591. application is

  592. this.

  593. The faithful

  594. servant that

  595. we have in

  596. verse 42

  597. is the

  598. person who

  599. is taking

  600. discipleship

  601. seriously.

  602. They

  603. understand what

  604. their

  605. responsibility is

  606. as a

  607. disciple,

  608. in particular

  609. to other

  610. disciples,

  611. to the

  612. rest of

  613. the church

  614. family.

  615. They know

  616. their position

  617. and their

  618. calling is

  619. to take

  620. care of

  621. other

  622. believers.

  623. elders.

  624. They know

  625. that they

  626. have a

  627. responsibility

  628. to fellow

  629. disciples to

  630. make sure

  631. that they

  632. are built

  633. up and

  634. encouraged in

  635. the faith.

  636. Now God

  637. in his

  638. goodness has

  639. provided his

  640. church with

  641. elders and

  642. teachers and

  643. leaders and

  644. God puts

  645. them in

  646. place to

  647. take care

  648. of the

  649. house.

  650. But it

  651. isn't just

  652. the responsibility

  653. of elders and

  654. leaders.

  655. it is the

  656. responsibility of

  657. everyone.

  658. As

  659. disciples,

  660. our calling

  661. is to get

  662. alongside one

  663. another and

  664. make sure that

  665. we are ready

  666. for the return

  667. of Jesus.

  668. So let's

  669. try and think

  670. that through in

  671. practice what it

  672. might look like.

  673. We just had

  674. tea and coffee

  675. together.

  676. The person that

  677. you were talking

  678. to.

  679. Do you

  680. know how

  681. they are in

  682. their relationship

  683. with God?

  684. Do you know

  685. how they're

  686. getting on in

  687. their faith?

  688. Are you

  689. aware that

  690. there are

  691. some people

  692. within the

  693. family of the

  694. church who

  695. are struggling

  696. and perhaps

  697. drifting?

  698. people?

  699. Do you

  700. see, God

  701. has placed

  702. us as

  703. people into

  704. a church

  705. family to

  706. watch out

  707. for one

  708. another.

  709. It's our

  710. responsibility to

  711. take care of

  712. the house,

  713. to keep an

  714. eye out for

  715. one another,

  716. to make sure

  717. that we're

  718. living faithfully

  719. as disciples.

  720. disciples.

  721. This is what

  722. a faithful

  723. servant is

  724. all about.

  725. Verse 43,

  726. it will be

  727. good for

  728. that servant

  729. whom the

  730. master finds

  731. doing so

  732. when he

  733. returns.

  734. So when

  735. Jesus returns

  736. and he finds

  737. us as

  738. disciples taking

  739. care of each

  740. other and

  741. looking after

  742. each other,

  743. that's going

  744. to be good

  745. for us.

  746. Verse 43,

  747. or verse

  748. 44, he says,

  749. I tell you the

  750. truth, he will

  751. put him in

  752. charge of all

  753. his possessions.

  754. The disciple

  755. who takes

  756. his responsibility

  757. seriously

  758. will be

  759. richly blessed

  760. when the

  761. master returns.

  762. He will

  763. enjoy life

  764. in the

  765. king's

  766. kingdom

  767. forever.

  768. He will

  769. have a

  770. seat at

  771. the table

  772. of the

  773. king's

  774. banquet

  775. and he

  776. will live

  777. forever

  778. with him.

  779. Are we

  780. faithful

  781. servants?

  782. But then

  783. there's the

  784. other one,

  785. the unfaithful

  786. servant,

  787. verse 45.

  788. But suppose

  789. the servant

  790. says to

  791. himself,

  792. oh, my

  793. master is

  794. taking a

  795. long time

  796. in coming.

  797. And he

  798. then begins

  799. to beat

  800. the men

  801. servants

  802. and the

  803. maid

  804. servants

  805. and to

  806. eat and

  807. drink and

  808. get drunk.

  809. Now, the

  810. contrast

  811. couldn't be

  812. more stark,

  813. could it?

  814. We had the

  815. faithful servant

  816. who's making

  817. sure that all

  818. the servants

  819. are well

  820. looked after,

  821. that they're

  822. prepared and

  823. they're ready.

  824. The unfaithful

  825. servant is,

  826. well, he's just

  827. carrying on and

  828. doing whatever

  829. he likes.

  830. The unfaithful

  831. servant is the

  832. one who does

  833. not take

  834. discipleship

  835. seriously.

  836. They're

  837. neglecting their

  838. responsibility.

  839. responsibility.

  840. They ignore

  841. their position

  842. and calling.

  843. Rather than

  844. invest time

  845. in other

  846. people,

  847. they're actually

  848. investing time

  849. in themselves.

  850. In practice,

  851. an unfaithful

  852. servant

  853. is a

  854. consumer.

  855. In other

  856. words, they

  857. see the

  858. church community

  859. as a place

  860. where you

  861. go to

  862. get,

  863. rather than

  864. a family

  865. to join

  866. in to

  867. serve.

  868. Oh, they're

  869. very happy to

  870. come along and

  871. use the

  872. services that

  873. are provided.

  874. But the

  875. care of

  876. others and

  877. the teaching

  878. of others,

  879. well, that's

  880. not my

  881. responsibility.

  882. Well, if

  883. that's you,

  884. yes, it

  885. is your

  886. responsibility.

  887. God has

  888. placed us

  889. as a

  890. family

  891. together

  892. to build

  893. each other

  894. up, to

  895. care for

  896. one another.

  897. That was

  898. the role of

  899. the servant

  900. in the

  901. house.

  902. He was

  903. to manage

  904. the house

  905. and to

  906. look after

  907. people.

  908. So how

  909. are we

  910. practically

  911. going to

  912. do that?

  913. Well, let

  914. me make

  915. two suggestions.

  916. first, let

  917. me speak

  918. here to

  919. those who

  920. are parents

  921. of younger

  922. children and

  923. even if you

  924. have older

  925. children or

  926. teens.

  927. Make it

  928. your priority

  929. to disciple

  930. your little

  931. children.

  932. God has

  933. given you

  934. the gift of

  935. children and

  936. placed them

  937. into your

  938. care so

  939. that you

  940. may manage

  941. them, so

  942. that you

  943. might get

  944. them

  945. ready for

  946. the return

  947. of the

  948. Lord Jesus.

  949. That is

  950. your primary

  951. responsibility.

  952. So parents,

  953. make it

  954. your objective

  955. to be a

  956. faithful servant

  957. and raise

  958. your children

  959. as disciples

  960. who are

  961. ready.

  962. So that's

  963. the first

  964. thing.

  965. Let me say

  966. this to us

  967. all as a

  968. church family.

  969. Let us

  970. make meeting

  971. together as

  972. a church

  973. family a

  974. priority.

  975. We say it

  976. so often

  977. and here's

  978. the reason

  979. why.

  980. Because we

  981. need one

  982. another to

  983. be responsible

  984. to each

  985. other, to

  986. build each

  987. other up.

  988. Plan your

  989. week, plan

  990. your timetable,

  991. plan your

  992. terms.

  993. We meet on a

  994. Sunday morning,

  995. we meet

  996. together on

  997. Wednesday

  998. evenings.

  999. If we

  1000. don't plan

  1001. for these

  1002. things, then

  1003. we'll be doing

  1004. something else.

  1005. Plan to be

  1006. there, not to

  1007. be seen, not

  1008. to earn brownie

  1009. points, not to

  1010. get God's

  1011. attention, but

  1012. so that you

  1013. can meet with

  1014. others and pray

  1015. with them and

  1016. listen to them

  1017. and encourage

  1018. them as we

  1019. talk through

  1020. God's word

  1021. together.

  1022. together.

  1023. Take time

  1024. with one

  1025. another to

  1026. build each

  1027. other up in

  1028. the faith.

  1029. You don't

  1030. need to be a

  1031. trained teacher.

  1032. You don't

  1033. need permission.

  1034. We just do

  1035. it.

  1036. If we are

  1037. disciples, the

  1038. people in the

  1039. church family are

  1040. your and my

  1041. responsibility.

  1042. It's not just

  1043. the role of

  1044. elders and

  1045. leaders.

  1046. It is the

  1047. calling of

  1048. every disciple

  1049. and to

  1050. ignore our

  1051. responsibility

  1052. is very

  1053. serious.

  1054. Very serious.

  1055. Look at

  1056. verse 46.

  1057. The master

  1058. of that

  1059. servant, so

  1060. the master

  1061. of this

  1062. unfaithful

  1063. servant, will

  1064. come on a

  1065. day when he

  1066. does not

  1067. expect him

  1068. and at an

  1069. hour he

  1070. is not

  1071. aware of.

  1072. He will

  1073. cut him to

  1074. pieces and

  1075. assign him a

  1076. place with

  1077. the unbelievers.

  1078. It's harsh

  1079. language, isn't

  1080. it?

  1081. But it's

  1082. intentional and

  1083. it's intentional

  1084. to wake us

  1085. up, to

  1086. show us that

  1087. this is

  1088. serious.

  1089. To ignore our

  1090. responsibility, to

  1091. reject our

  1092. calling as a

  1093. disciple means

  1094. we will be

  1095. treated as

  1096. an unbeliever.

  1097. Instead of

  1098. blessing, there

  1099. will be

  1100. judgment.

  1101. Verse 47.

  1102. That servant

  1103. who knows his

  1104. master's will

  1105. and does not

  1106. get ready or

  1107. does not do

  1108. what his

  1109. master wants

  1110. will be beaten

  1111. with many

  1112. blows.

  1113. Rather than

  1114. dining with the

  1115. king in his

  1116. eternal kingdom,

  1117. kingdom, they

  1118. will be shut

  1119. out and

  1120. separated from

  1121. the king

  1122. forever.

  1123. Because a

  1124. true disciple,

  1125. the faithful

  1126. servant, will

  1127. be watching out

  1128. for those who

  1129. need built up

  1130. in the faith.

  1131. Now maybe

  1132. this comes as

  1133. a shock to

  1134. you.

  1135. That's the

  1136. way in which

  1137. Jesus' parables

  1138. work.

  1139. They come with

  1140. a shock.

  1141. Maybe you

  1142. didn't realise

  1143. how serious

  1144. a disciple

  1145. was.

  1146. I didn't

  1147. know that I

  1148. had to do

  1149. this.

  1150. I didn't

  1151. know that

  1152. people within

  1153. the church

  1154. family was

  1155. my responsibility.

  1156. Well maybe

  1157. that's you.

  1158. And what

  1159. does Jesus

  1160. say to us?

  1161. Well look at

  1162. verse 48.

  1163. But the

  1164. one who

  1165. does not

  1166. know and

  1167. does things

  1168. deserving

  1169. punishment will

  1170. be beaten

  1171. with few

  1172. blows.

  1173. You see

  1174. for those who

  1175. have not

  1176. understood their

  1177. responsibility,

  1178. rather than

  1179. being judged,

  1180. they will be

  1181. disciplined.

  1182. And Jesus

  1183. is using this

  1184. parable and

  1185. he's teaching

  1186. us through it.

  1187. He's saying,

  1188. will you wake

  1189. up to your

  1190. responsibility?

  1191. I can

  1192. discipline you

  1193. now or you

  1194. can ignore

  1195. that and

  1196. face judgment

  1197. later.

  1198. God in

  1199. his grace

  1200. warns us

  1201. of the

  1202. return of

  1203. Jesus so

  1204. that we can

  1205. put things

  1206. in order

  1207. today.

  1208. The promise

  1209. of his

  1210. return is

  1211. not to try

  1212. and catch

  1213. us out,

  1214. but to make

  1215. sure we are

  1216. ready.

  1217. So what

  1218. is our

  1219. response

  1220. to this?

  1221. Well,

  1222. there are

  1223. two things.

  1224. First,

  1225. there is an

  1226. awesome

  1227. privilege.

  1228. Look at

  1229. verse 48,

  1230. the last

  1231. part of

  1232. verse 48.

  1233. From

  1234. everyone who

  1235. has been

  1236. given much,

  1237. much will

  1238. be demanded.

  1239. and from

  1240. the one

  1241. who has

  1242. been entrusted

  1243. with much,

  1244. much more

  1245. will be

  1246. asked.

  1247. You see,

  1248. if we're

  1249. disciples this

  1250. morning,

  1251. I want us

  1252. to see that

  1253. we have been

  1254. given so

  1255. much.

  1256. God has

  1257. given to

  1258. us his own

  1259. son,

  1260. Jesus Christ,

  1261. the faithful

  1262. servant,

  1263. the one who

  1264. came not to

  1265. be served,

  1266. but to

  1267. serve,

  1268. and to

  1269. give his

  1270. life as

  1271. a ransom.

  1272. The one

  1273. who came

  1274. and died

  1275. for us,

  1276. the one

  1277. who came

  1278. and took

  1279. the punishment

  1280. that I

  1281. deserve,

  1282. and through

  1283. our faith

  1284. in Jesus,

  1285. we can

  1286. now be

  1287. forgiven.

  1288. All of

  1289. our sin

  1290. and shame

  1291. and guilt

  1292. has been

  1293. dealt with

  1294. once and

  1295. for all.

  1296. We are

  1297. now welcomed

  1298. into God's

  1299. family,

  1300. treated and

  1301. treasured

  1302. as his

  1303. own child.

  1304. And because

  1305. of what God

  1306. has given

  1307. to me

  1308. through

  1309. Jesus,

  1310. I am

  1311. no longer

  1312. an outsider

  1313. and left

  1314. outside.

  1315. I am a

  1316. servant of

  1317. the King

  1318. with the

  1319. promise of

  1320. a place

  1321. at his

  1322. banquet

  1323. in his

  1324. eternal

  1325. kingdom

  1326. forever

  1327. and forever.

  1328. If we

  1329. are disciples,

  1330. we have

  1331. received

  1332. so much

  1333. grace

  1334. and mercy

  1335. in abundance

  1336. day after

  1337. day after

  1338. day.

  1339. We are

  1340. truly privileged

  1341. people if

  1342. we are

  1343. disciples of

  1344. Jesus.

  1345. But with

  1346. this awesome

  1347. privilege

  1348. comes great

  1349. responsibility.

  1350. Do you see

  1351. what it says

  1352. at the end

  1353. of verse

  1354. 48?

  1355. Everyone who

  1356. has been

  1357. given much,

  1358. much will

  1359. be

  1360. demanded.

  1361. from the

  1362. one who

  1363. has been

  1364. entrusted

  1365. with much,

  1366. much more

  1367. will be

  1368. asked.

  1369. You see,

  1370. when we

  1371. experience his

  1372. forgiveness

  1373. and welcome,

  1374. when we see

  1375. that we've been

  1376. brought into

  1377. the King's

  1378. palace,

  1379. welcomed into

  1380. his family,

  1381. being able to

  1382. serve the

  1383. eternal King,

  1384. when we see

  1385. the grace and

  1386. the mercy that

  1387. has flowed to

  1388. us, it

  1389. motivates us

  1390. to serve

  1391. one another.

  1392. It fills us

  1393. with a desire

  1394. to reach out

  1395. and to build

  1396. people up with

  1397. the amazing

  1398. grace of God.

  1399. Discipleship

  1400. is serious.

  1401. It is an

  1402. awesome

  1403. privilege,

  1404. but with it

  1405. comes great

  1406. responsibility.

  1407. Look at

  1408. verse 40

  1409. again.

  1410. You,

  1411. me,

  1412. disciples,

  1413. even if we

  1414. are not yet

  1415. a disciple,

  1416. you also

  1417. must be

  1418. ready,

  1419. because the

  1420. Son of Man

  1421. will come at

  1422. an hour

  1423. when you do

  1424. not expect

  1425. him.

  1426. Let's pray.

  1427. our Father

  1428. God, we

  1429. come to

  1430. you as

  1431. one who

  1432. is gracious

  1433. and

  1434. merciful,

  1435. and we

  1436. ask that

  1437. you would

  1438. now forgive

  1439. us for

  1440. the times

  1441. we have

  1442. neglected

  1443. our

  1444. responsibility,

  1445. and we

  1446. have acted

  1447. more like

  1448. an unfaithful

  1449. servant

  1450. rather than

  1451. a faithful

  1452. servant.

  1453. Help us

  1454. to see

  1455. afresh the

  1456. amazing grace

  1457. and mercy

  1458. that we

  1459. have received.

  1460. Give us

  1461. a vision

  1462. of that

  1463. eternal

  1464. banquet,

  1465. seated at

  1466. the King's

  1467. table,

  1468. served by

  1469. the King

  1470. of Kings

  1471. himself

  1472. for all

  1473. eternity.

  1474. May you

  1475. motivate us

  1476. afresh,

  1477. fill us

  1478. with a

  1479. desire to

  1480. care

  1481. for the

  1482. church

  1483. family,

  1484. to build

  1485. each other

  1486. up in the

  1487. faith,

  1488. so that

  1489. we are

  1490. ready

  1491. for the

  1492. coming

  1493. name of

  1494. Jesus.

  1495. Father,

  1496. we thank

  1497. you for

  1498. our

  1499. church

  1500. family.

  1501. We

  1502. thank you

  1503. for the

  1504. support of

  1505. one another.

  1506. Thank you

  1507. that you

  1508. have given

  1509. to us

  1510. each other

  1511. wonderful

  1512. gifts from

  1513. you to

  1514. serve one

  1515. another and

  1516. to help

  1517. each other.

  1518. and we

  1519. pray that

  1520. we would

  1521. do so

  1522. more and

  1523. more and

  1524. that the

  1525. return of

  1526. the King

  1527. would motivate

  1528. us afresh.

  1529. We pray

  1530. this in

  1531. Jesus' name.

  1532. Amen.

  1533. We're going

  1534. to sing

  1535. together

  1536. a song

  1537. which talks

  1538. about

  1539. Jesus who

  1540. is the

  1541. faithful

  1542. servant,

  1543. the one

  1544. who came

  1545. to serve

  1546. us,

  1547. and in

  1548. response

  1549. that we

  1550. would bring

  1551. our lives

  1552. and serve

  1553. one another.

  1554. So let's

  1555. stand together

  1556. as we sing

  1557. this.

  1558. Amen.
