  1. And we're doing chapter 17, verse 20.

  2. Once having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come,

  3. Jesus replied, the kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation,

  4. nor will people say, here it is or there it is, because the kingdom of God is within you.

  5. Then he said to his disciples, the time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man,

  6. but you will not see it. Men will tell you, there he is, or here he is.

  7. Do not go running off after them, for the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning,

  8. which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other.

  9. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

  10. Just as was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man.

  11. People were eating, drinking, marrying, and being given up, giving in marriage up,

  12. to the days of Noah and to the ark.

  13. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

  14. It was the same in the days of Lot.

  15. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.

  16. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

  17. It will be just like this on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.

  18. On that day, no one who is on the roof of his house with his goods inside should go down and get them.

  19. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.

  20. Remember Lot's wife.

  21. Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it.

  22. Whoever loses his life will preserve it.

  23. I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed.

  24. One will be taken and the other left.

  25. Two women will be grinding grain together.

  26. One will be taken, the other left.

  27. Where, Lord? they asked.

  28. He replied,

  29. Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.

  30. Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

  31. He said,

  32. In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men.

  33. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea,

  34. Grant me justice against my adversary.

  35. For some time he refused, but finally he said to himself,

  36. Even though I don't fear God or care about men,

  37. yet because this widow keeps bothering me,

  38. I will see that she gets justice,

  39. so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming.

  40. And the Lord said,

  41. Listen to what the unjust judge says.

  42. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones,

  43. who cry out to him day and night?

  44. Will he keep putting them off?

  45. I tell you, he will see that they get justice and quickly.

  46. However, when the Son of Man comes,

  47. will he find faith on the earth?

  48. To some who were confident of their own righteousness

  49. and looked down on everybody else,

  50. Jesus told this parable.

  51. Two men went up to the temple to pray,

  52. one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

  53. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself.

  54. God, I thank you that I am not like other men.

  55. Robbers, evildoers, adulterers,

  56. or even like this tax collector.

  57. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.

  58. But the tax collector stood at a distance.

  59. He would not even look up to heaven,

  60. but beat his breast and said,

  61. God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

  62. I tell you that this man, rather than the other,

  63. went home justified before God.

  64. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,

  65. and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

  66. Thanks very much, Louise.

  67. Again, if somebody could help me out here,

  68. there's some notes and some pens.

  69. Thank you very much, Ralph.

  70. If you'd like a pen to take notes,

  71. and a sheet of paper to follow along

  72. with the notes that are on the screen,

  73. then we'll do that now.

  74. Just to remind us all that we've been going through

  75. a series of parables from Luke's Gospel.

  76. We've got one more next week,

  77. and then we move into July and August,

  78. when there will be other people

  79. who will be coming to speak.

  80. This morning, the focus will really be looking

  81. at the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector.

  82. But we read what we did read,

  83. just by way of context and background,

  84. which I think will give us better understanding

  85. of the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector.

  86. Thanks, Ralph.

  87. So, let's pray, and we'll ask for God's help

  88. as we look at his word together.

  89. Father, would you please help us,

  90. help us to understand the word

  91. that you have had written and preserved

  92. and kept for us.

  93. We pray that it would teach us and instruct us,

  94. and it would change us to be the kind of people

  95. that you call us to be in this time

  96. and in this age.

  97. And that if there is anything that we see in our lives

  98. that need to be changed,

  99. would you give us the grace to do so.

  100. And we pray all of this

  101. because we want to become more like Jesus,

  102. so that we bring glory and honour to Jesus.

  103. So, do your work amongst us

  104. by your Holy Spirit's power, we pray.

  105. Amen.

  106. Well, Jewish rabbis or Jewish teachers had a story

  107. that they used to tell to illustrate God's grace towards us.

  108. The story went like this.

  109. It was of a loving and kind king

  110. who ruled over a very large city

  111. of which he had a great army.

  112. And the king was wondering to himself

  113. whereabouts he should station his troops.

  114. And after much thought and counsel with others,

  115. he decided that he would station his troops

  116. at a location that was some distance away from the city.

  117. His reason?

  118. Well, the king thought that if the people in the city

  119. began to rebel against him,

  120. it would take a long time for his troops

  121. to get to the city.

  122. In the interim, the rebels would have opportunity

  123. to come to their senses,

  124. back down,

  125. and turn again to the king.

  126. So their application was very simple.

  127. God, in his grace,

  128. keeps his judgment at a distance,

  129. giving us time to repent

  130. before he comes.

  131. Now that's been the big theme

  132. of the parables that we've been looking at together.

  133. Jesus is going to come again,

  134. and we must be prepared for his coming.

  135. Now before we get to this parable

  136. of the Pharisee and the tax collector,

  137. there's something that Jesus is teaching us

  138. that will help us to understand it

  139. a little bit better.

  140. The first thing he tells us

  141. is that the king has come.

  142. So have a look at chapter 17, verse 20.

  143. Chapter 17, verse 20.

  144. Once, having been asked by the Pharisees

  145. when the kingdom of God would come,

  146. so there's a dialogue going on,

  147. and they're asking,

  148. when's the kingdom going to come?

  149. The people were expecting and longing

  150. for God's kingdom to arrive.

  151. It would be a kingdom

  152. where God would execute justice,

  153. and he would establish peace

  154. and put everything right.

  155. And so they longed for the coming

  156. of God's king

  157. who would establish

  158. God's eternal kingdom.

  159. So naturally there's this question,

  160. when is the kingdom coming?

  161. And when the kingdom comes,

  162. when is the king going to come?

  163. Well, look at how Jesus answers.

  164. In verse 20, Jesus replied,

  165. the kingdom of God does not come

  166. with your careful observation.

  167. Nor will people say,

  168. here it is, or there it is.

  169. You see, the kingdom isn't going to come

  170. with this grand announcement.

  171. It's not going to be on the six o'clock news,

  172. or you're not going to get a message

  173. on Facebook about it.

  174. It's going to come silently.

  175. In fact, look what Jesus says

  176. at the end of verse 21.

  177. He says,

  178. the kingdom of God is within you.

  179. Or better translated,

  180. the kingdom of God is among you.

  181. So Jesus is saying to these people

  182. who are looking for the kingdom,

  183. who are longing for the king to come,

  184. Jesus is saying,

  185. the king and the kingdom

  186. has already come.

  187. It's me.

  188. It's here.

  189. You've heard me teach.

  190. You've seen all my miracles.

  191. But yet you can't see

  192. that the king has already come

  193. among you.

  194. Now that has a knock-on effect for us.

  195. Because the king has come,

  196. we are living in what is called

  197. a time of grace.

  198. This is a great big theme of Luke

  199. through his gospel.

  200. We read, don't we,

  201. of many times where we see Jesus

  202. coming and he's eating and drinking

  203. with sinners and tax collectors.

  204. He comes calling people like us

  205. into his kingdom.

  206. Repent and believe.

  207. Receive the free gift of forgiveness.

  208. Come into my kingdom.

  209. I don't come for those who are healthy.

  210. I come for the sick.

  211. Not for the righteous,

  212. but the unrighteous.

  213. This is a time of grace.

  214. Welcome, you sinners.

  215. So because Jesus has now come,

  216. we live in a time of grace.

  217. But he also teaches us something else.

  218. He says the king has come,

  219. but the king will come.

  220. Have a look at verse 22

  221. of chapter 17.

  222. Then he said to his disciples,

  223. The time is coming

  224. when you will long to see

  225. one of the days of the Son of Man.

  226. Remember, Son of Man is a title.

  227. A title of a great king

  228. who was to come

  229. with absolute power

  230. and supreme authority.

  231. So he's saying,

  232. you'll long to see the day

  233. when the king comes,

  234. but you will not see it.

  235. Men will tell you,

  236. there he is,

  237. or here he is.

  238. Do not go running after them.

  239. Don't be fooled by people

  240. who say,

  241. I know when Jesus is coming.

  242. I'm able to discern

  243. when he's coming.

  244. Verse 24.

  245. For the Son of Man in his day

  246. will be like the lightning

  247. which flashes

  248. and lights up the sky

  249. from one end to the other.

  250. You see, when Jesus returns,

  251. it will be different

  252. to his first coming

  253. when it was silent,

  254. but when the king returns,

  255. everybody will know

  256. without exception.

  257. It will not be silent.

  258. Nobody will need to be telling us.

  259. It will be visible

  260. just like a flash of lightning

  261. across the dark sky.

  262. Everybody will see

  263. the coming of the king.

  264. Now when the king comes,

  265. it will not be

  266. a time of grace,

  267. but a time of judgment.

  268. And he gives us two pictures

  269. to show us

  270. what it will be like.

  271. Two characters

  272. in the Old Testament.

  273. The first one is Noah.

  274. Look at verse 26.

  275. Just as it was

  276. in the days of Noah,

  277. so also will it be

  278. in the days

  279. of the Son of Man.

  280. People were eating,

  281. drinking,

  282. marrying,

  283. and being given in marriage

  284. up to the day

  285. Noah entered the ark.

  286. Everybody remember the story

  287. going about their day-to-day lives?

  288. Living and enjoying life,

  289. getting married,

  290. settling down,

  291. having kids.

  292. It was a time of grace.

  293. God was giving people

  294. time to turn to him,

  295. to change of their ways.

  296. But,

  297. end of verse 27,

  298. then the flood came

  299. and destroyed

  300. them all.

  301. Judgment came

  302. just

  303. as God promised.

  304. It was the same,

  305. have a look at verse 28,

  306. with Lot.

  307. It was the same

  308. in the days of Lot.

  309. People were eating

  310. and drinking,

  311. buying and selling,

  312. planting and building.

  313. People were going off

  314. to work,

  315. choosing their careers,

  316. off to college,

  317. saving their monies,

  318. buying homes,

  319. upgrading,

  320. doing all kinds of things.

  321. It was a time of grace.

  322. God was giving the city

  323. time to turn to him,

  324. to put things right.

  325. But then,

  326. verse 29,

  327. the day Lot left Sodom,

  328. fire and sulfur

  329. rained down from heaven

  330. and destroyed

  331. them all.

  332. Judgment came

  333. just

  334. as God promised.

  335. Now you see,

  336. what has happened

  337. in the past

  338. is just giving us

  339. a glimpse

  340. of what is

  341. to come.

  342. Verse 30,

  343. it will be

  344. just like this

  345. on the day

  346. the Son of Man

  347. is revealed.

  348. we'll be going

  349. off to school

  350. or to college.

  351. You know,

  352. we could be at work.

  353. We could be sitting down

  354. with our mates

  355. having lunch.

  356. We could be off

  357. on our holidays.

  358. We could be in the middle

  359. of a soccer match.

  360. Whatever

  361. we're doing

  362. or wherever

  363. we are,

  364. that day

  365. will come

  366. and it will be

  367. a day of judgment.

  368. But as Jesus

  369. goes on to teach,

  370. he wants us

  371. to know

  372. that he is

  373. a just

  374. judge.

  375. You see,

  376. the only reason

  377. judgment

  378. has not yet

  379. come

  380. is because

  381. we're living

  382. in this time

  383. or this age

  384. of grace.

  385. The King

  386. has come

  387. urging,

  388. calling people,

  389. all nations,

  390. all people,

  391. come to me.

  392. Come and know

  393. my grace.

  394. Come and receive

  395. forgiveness.

  396. You see,

  397. God is a just

  398. and fair judge.

  399. Have a look

  400. at chapter 18,

  401. verse 7.

  402. This is the parable

  403. of the widow

  404. and the unjust judge.

  405. And what we're

  406. to see here

  407. is not a comparison

  408. saying God is like

  409. the unjust judge,

  410. but a complete contrast.

  411. God is not like

  412. this unjust judge.

  413. Verse 7.

  414. And will not God

  415. bring about justice

  416. for his chosen ones

  417. who cry out to him

  418. day and night?

  419. Will he keep

  420. putting them off?

  421. I tell you,

  422. he will see

  423. that they get justice

  424. and quickly.

  425. You see,

  426. God is a God

  427. of justice.

  428. He sees

  429. all that is going

  430. on in this world

  431. and he will not

  432. let the injustices

  433. keep going on.

  434. God sees the 50,000

  435. children,

  436. boys and girls

  437. who are trafficked

  438. from South

  439. and Central America

  440. into the US

  441. every year

  442. for the sex trade.

  443. He sees the hundreds

  444. of thousands

  445. men and women

  446. who use

  447. and abuse them.

  448. God is not

  449. immune to the

  450. violence of ISIS

  451. as they go on

  452. beheading and

  453. raping innocent people.

  454. God hasn't

  455. turned a blind eye

  456. to the 220,000

  457. people in Syria

  458. who have been

  459. murdered

  460. and the other

  461. 11 million

  462. who have been

  463. displaced

  464. in the last

  465. five years

  466. alone.

  467. God sees

  468. every one

  469. of those

  470. boats

  471. that travel

  472. across the

  473. Mediterranean

  474. looking

  475. for somewhere

  476. to rest.

  477. Refugees.

  478. God weeps

  479. and mourns

  480. over the 46,000

  481. reports of

  482. domestic abuse

  483. in Ireland

  484. every single

  485. year

  486. and the

  487. countless

  488. hundreds

  489. who have

  490. to be

  491. rehomed.

  492. God knows

  493. about the

  494. 260 million

  495. of unpaid

  496. tax

  497. in our

  498. country

  499. every year

  500. which means

  501. the most

  502. vulnerable

  503. suffer more

  504. and more

  505. because budgets

  506. have to be

  507. cut.

  508. We only

  509. see facts

  510. and figures

  511. but God

  512. hears the

  513. cry of

  514. every act

  515. of violence

  516. and crime.

  517. These are

  518. not statistics

  519. these are

  520. people who

  521. suffer at

  522. the hands

  523. of others

  524. and God

  525. cares

  526. because God

  527. is a God

  528. of justice.

  529. And God

  530. will bring

  531. his judgment

  532. to this

  533. world

  534. because it

  535. continues to

  536. rebel and

  537. behave the

  538. way that it

  539. does.

  540. But let's

  541. just bring

  542. all of that

  543. a little bit

  544. closer.

  545. We think

  546. about what's

  547. going on in

  548. the world.

  549. We think

  550. about what's

  551. going on in

  552. the country.

  553. But what

  554. does God

  555. see inside

  556. here?

  557. God sees

  558. every unkind

  559. act I

  560. have committed.

  561. He hears

  562. every hurtful

  563. word and

  564. he knows

  565. every single

  566. selfish

  567. motive.

  568. He's seen

  569. when we've

  570. lost our

  571. temper.

  572. He's seen

  573. when we've

  574. said something

  575. unkind.

  576. You see

  577. every single

  578. one of us

  579. well we've

  580. all contributed

  581. to this

  582. broken and

  583. disordered

  584. world and

  585. God looks

  586. at the

  587. world and

  588. he looks

  589. at all

  590. that he's

  591. made and

  592. God is

  593. grieved

  594. that we

  595. have hurt

  596. each other

  597. the way

  598. that we

  599. have done.

  600. We deserve

  601. God's

  602. judgment but

  603. this is a

  604. time of

  605. grace.

  606. God is

  607. giving us

  608. time to

  609. change how

  610. we live,

  611. how we

  612. treat each

  613. other.

  614. He is

  615. giving us

  616. time to

  617. turn to

  618. his son

  619. Jesus

  620. Christ.

  621. He is

  622. treating

  623. us with

  624. grace

  625. today

  626. because

  627. judgment

  628. will

  629. come.

  630. And so

  631. he is

  632. saying we

  633. need to

  634. be prepared.

  635. We need

  636. to be

  637. ready to

  638. meet

  639. the king.

  640. Now all

  641. of that is

  642. background,

  643. all of that

  644. helps us to

  645. understand why

  646. then Jesus

  647. goes on to

  648. tell this

  649. story of

  650. the Pharisee

  651. and the

  652. tax

  653. collector.

  654. Let's

  655. read it

  656. in verse

  657. nine.

  658. You see

  659. to some

  660. who were

  661. confident

  662. of their

  663. own

  664. righteousness

  665. and looked

  666. down on

  667. everybody

  668. else,

  669. Jesus told

  670. this parable.

  671. Two men

  672. went up to

  673. the temple

  674. to pray,

  675. one a

  676. Pharisee,

  677. the other

  678. a tax

  679. collector.

  680. You see

  681. Jesus through

  682. this story

  683. is warning

  684. us of

  685. the dangers

  686. of ignoring

  687. his grace

  688. and the

  689. blessing

  690. of seeking

  691. his grace.

  692. What happens

  693. if we ignore

  694. his grace

  695. and what we

  696. receive if we

  697. seek his

  698. grace?

  699. First,

  700. ignoring his

  701. grace,

  702. verse 11,

  703. the Pharisee

  704. stood up

  705. and prayed

  706. about

  707. or to

  708. himself.

  709. I mean,

  710. this is how

  711. arrogant

  712. he is.

  713. The Pharisee

  714. as he arrives

  715. in the

  716. temple

  717. gives the

  718. impression

  719. that he's

  720. talking to

  721. God,

  722. that he's

  723. praying to

  724. his Father

  725. in heaven,

  726. but in

  727. reality he's

  728. actually talking

  729. to himself.

  730. He's not

  731. asking God

  732. for anything.

  733. He's

  734. reminding

  735. himself

  736. of how

  737. self-righteous

  738. he is.

  739. He's saying

  740. to himself,

  741. look at

  742. what I

  743. am not

  744. like.

  745. Verse 11,

  746. God,

  747. I thank

  748. you that

  749. I am

  750. not like

  751. other men,

  752. those robbers,

  753. evildoers,

  754. adulterers,

  755. or even,

  756. look at

  757. them,

  758. that tax

  759. collector.

  760. Lord,

  761. I thank

  762. you that

  763. I'm not

  764. like my

  765. college

  766. friend.

  767. They

  768. just don't

  769. have time

  770. for you.

  771. God,

  772. I thank

  773. you that

  774. I'm not

  775. like the

  776. guy in

  777. work.

  778. His

  779. life is

  780. in such

  781. a mess.

  782. Father,

  783. I thank

  784. you that

  785. I have

  786. not fallen

  787. like the

  788. one sitting

  789. behind me.

  790. I mean,

  791. I don't want

  792. to judge

  793. them,

  794. but you

  795. know what

  796. they're

  797. like.

  798. You see,

  799. not only do

  800. we take

  801. pride in

  802. what we

  803. don't do,

  804. we take

  805. pride in

  806. what we

  807. do do.

  808. Look at

  809. what I

  810. am like,

  811. verse 12.

  812. I fast

  813. twice a

  814. week and

  815. I give

  816. a tenth

  817. of all

  818. I get.

  819. You know,

  820. I was the

  821. last one

  822. here last

  823. Sunday.

  824. Everybody

  825. else had

  826. cleared off

  827. and I

  828. was still

  829. cleaning up.

  830. The church

  831. gave 600

  832. euro to

  833. that mission.

  834. That means

  835. I must have

  836. given,

  837. let me

  838. think,

  839. what did

  840. I give?

  841. I must

  842. have given

  843. a third.

  844. Yeah,

  845. I did.

  846. I gave a

  847. lot,

  848. didn't I?

  849. Why am I

  850. the only one

  851. who seems

  852. to be praying

  853. in the

  854. home group?

  855. I must

  856. be so

  857. much more

  858. spiritual

  859. than those

  860. other silent

  861. ones.

  862. You see,

  863. we don't

  864. like the

  865. attitude of

  866. the Pharisee,

  867. do we?

  868. But the

  869. problem is

  870. we all

  871. compare and

  872. contrast.

  873. I'm not

  874. like them.

  875. I'm so

  876. much better

  877. than what

  878. they're like.

  879. Why can't

  880. they be

  881. like me

  882. and do

  883. things the

  884. way I

  885. do it

  886. and have

  887. the same

  888. commitment

  889. and attitude

  890. that I

  891. have?

  892. It's all

  893. self-justification.

  894. It's arrogance.

  895. It's all

  896. about boosting

  897. our own

  898. egos.

  899. And the

  900. underlying

  901. fact is

  902. this.

  903. When we

  904. talk or

  905. when we

  906. think like

  907. that,

  908. all we're

  909. saying is,

  910. I don't

  911. need God.

  912. I don't

  913. need grace.

  914. Other people

  915. do, but not

  916. me.

  917. I will face

  918. God's

  919. judgment on

  920. my own

  921. terms.

  922. But there's

  923. another way

  924. to come.

  925. Rather than

  926. ignore his

  927. grace, we

  928. come seeking

  929. his grace.

  930. Verse 13.

  931. But the

  932. tax collector,

  933. he stood

  934. at a

  935. distance.

  936. He would

  937. not even

  938. look up

  939. to heaven,

  940. but beat

  941. his breast.

  942. You know,

  943. the tax

  944. collectors,

  945. well, they

  946. were considered

  947. the lowest

  948. of the low

  949. in society.

  950. There were

  951. categories.

  952. You had

  953. sinners,

  954. and then you

  955. had tax

  956. collectors at

  957. the bottom

  958. of the pile.

  959. No

  960. hopers.

  961. But rather

  962. than ignore

  963. grace,

  964. he comes

  965. seeking

  966. grace.

  967. Look at

  968. verse 13

  969. again.

  970. Look at

  971. his humble

  972. approach.

  973. He stood

  974. at a

  975. distance.

  976. He wouldn't

  977. even look

  978. up to

  979. heaven,

  980. but beat

  981. his breast.

  982. There's no

  983. bragging rights

  984. here.

  985. There's no

  986. talk of

  987. look at

  988. what I'm

  989. like or

  990. look at

  991. what I've

  992. done.

  993. There's no

  994. comparing or

  995. contrasting with

  996. other people.

  997. He sees

  998. himself as

  999. he truly

  1000. is.

  1001. He stands

  1002. back at a

  1003. distance.

  1004. He understands

  1005. he's

  1006. separated from

  1007. God.

  1008. He won't

  1009. look up

  1010. towards heaven.

  1011. He knows

  1012. he deserves

  1013. God's

  1014. just

  1015. judgment.

  1016. He

  1017. beats his

  1018. breast.

  1019. He is

  1020. truly

  1021. repentant

  1022. for all

  1023. that he

  1024. has done.

  1025. The tax

  1026. collector

  1027. sees himself

  1028. as God

  1029. sees him,

  1030. and he

  1031. humbly

  1032. accepts

  1033. that I

  1034. am a

  1035. sinner.

  1036. But he's

  1037. not just

  1038. humble,

  1039. is he?

  1040. He knows

  1041. what he

  1042. desperately

  1043. needs.

  1044. And that's

  1045. why he

  1046. comes

  1047. praying,

  1048. because he

  1049. comes

  1050. seeking.

  1051. Look at

  1052. the end

  1053. of verse

  1054. 13.

  1055. God,

  1056. have

  1057. mercy on

  1058. me,

  1059. a sinner.

  1060. sinner.

  1061. He

  1062. brings

  1063. nothing

  1064. to God,

  1065. only his

  1066. sin.

  1067. He

  1068. blames

  1069. no one,

  1070. only

  1071. himself.

  1072. He

  1073. comes to

  1074. the one

  1075. who is

  1076. gracious,

  1077. full of

  1078. grace,

  1079. one who

  1080. acts in

  1081. grace,

  1082. and comes

  1083. seeking

  1084. his

  1085. mercy.

  1086. He

  1087. throws

  1088. himself

  1089. completely

  1090. at God.

  1091. have

  1092. mercy

  1093. on

  1094. me,

  1095. a

  1096. sinner.

  1097. And how

  1098. did God

  1099. respond to

  1100. these two

  1101. people?

  1102. Look at

  1103. verse 14.

  1104. I tell

  1105. you that

  1106. this man,

  1107. the tax

  1108. collector,

  1109. rather than

  1110. the other,

  1111. the Pharisee,

  1112. went home

  1113. justified

  1114. before God.

  1115. Do you

  1116. see the

  1117. difference

  1118. here?

  1119. The

  1120. Pharisee,

  1121. he wore

  1122. a mask.

  1123. He

  1124. hides

  1125. his

  1126. sin.

  1127. He

  1128. covers

  1129. over

  1130. his

  1131. sin.

  1132. He

  1133. takes

  1134. pride

  1135. in

  1136. all

  1137. that

  1138. he's

  1139. done.

  1140. On the

  1141. other hand,

  1142. the tax

  1143. collector,

  1144. well,

  1145. he's just

  1146. taken off

  1147. his mask.

  1148. He

  1149. owns

  1150. his

  1151. sin

  1152. for

  1153. himself.

  1154. He

  1155. confesses

  1156. his

  1157. sin.

  1158. He

  1159. relies

  1160. on

  1161. God's

  1162. grace.

  1163. And the

  1164. tax

  1165. collector

  1166. shows us

  1167. how we

  1168. are to

  1169. be

  1170. prepared

  1171. to meet

  1172. the

  1173. coming

  1174. king.

  1175. This

  1176. is the

  1177. person

  1178. who will

  1179. be welcomed

  1180. into the

  1181. king's

  1182. kingdom.

  1183. Verse

  1184. 14,

  1185. or the

  1186. end of

  1187. verse 14,

  1188. for everyone

  1189. who exalts

  1190. himself

  1191. will be

  1192. humbled,

  1193. and he

  1194. who

  1195. humbles

  1196. himself

  1197. will be

  1198. exalted.

  1199. You see,

  1200. the point

  1201. is so

  1202. simple.

  1203. We

  1204. either

  1205. humble

  1206. ourselves

  1207. today

  1208. before

  1209. God

  1210. and

  1211. experience

  1212. his

  1213. wonderful

  1214. grace

  1215. today,

  1216. or

  1217. he

  1218. will

  1219. humble

  1220. us

  1221. when

  1222. he

  1223. returns

  1224. in

  1225. judgment.

  1226. So

  1227. humble

  1228. ourselves

  1229. today

  1230. and

  1231. experience

  1232. his

  1233. grace

  1234. or

  1235. he

  1236. will

  1237. humble

  1238. us

  1239. when

  1240. we

  1241. experience

  1242. his

  1243. judgment.

  1244. Now

  1245. because

  1246. this is

  1247. a time

  1248. of

  1249. grace

  1250. in

  1251. which

  1252. we

  1253. live

  1254. in,

  1255. we

  1256. should

  1257. be

  1258. people

  1259. of

  1260. grace.

  1261. And

  1262. just by

  1263. way of

  1264. application

  1265. for us

  1266. in this,

  1267. just very

  1268. simply,

  1269. three things.

  1270. The way

  1271. in which

  1272. God's

  1273. grace

  1274. should

  1275. affect

  1276. us.

  1277. If we've

  1278. come to

  1279. experience

  1280. this

  1281. grace,

  1282. if we

  1283. come like

  1284. the tax

  1285. collector,

  1286. here's

  1287. three ways

  1288. it should

  1289. affect

  1290. us.

  1291. First,

  1292. we live

  1293. in God's

  1294. grace

  1295. every day.

  1296. The only

  1297. way to

  1298. come before

  1299. God is

  1300. like the

  1301. tax

  1302. collector.

  1303. There's

  1304. no room

  1305. for arrogant

  1306. pride.

  1307. There's

  1308. no place

  1309. for boasting.

  1310. We bring

  1311. only who

  1312. we are

  1313. as we

  1314. are.

  1315. We don't

  1316. blame other

  1317. people.

  1318. We don't

  1319. point the

  1320. finger at

  1321. other people

  1322. and say

  1323. it's their

  1324. fault.

  1325. No,

  1326. we come

  1327. as we

  1328. are,

  1329. owning

  1330. our own

  1331. sin and

  1332. resting

  1333. in the

  1334. rich

  1335. grace

  1336. of God.

  1337. And look

  1338. again at

  1339. verse 14.

  1340. What happens

  1341. when we

  1342. do that?

  1343. I tell

  1344. you that

  1345. this

  1346. person,

  1347. rather than

  1348. the other,

  1349. will go

  1350. home justified

  1351. before God.

  1352. When we

  1353. receive his

  1354. grace,

  1355. we enter

  1356. into a

  1357. renewed and

  1358. restored

  1359. relationship

  1360. with God.

  1361. That means

  1362. we no

  1363. longer have

  1364. to stand

  1365. at a

  1366. distance.

  1367. We are

  1368. now welcomed

  1369. and accepted

  1370. by God.

  1371. We no

  1372. longer have

  1373. to hide

  1374. from God

  1375. and cower.

  1376. We can

  1377. now enjoy

  1378. God,

  1379. love him

  1380. and be

  1381. with him.

  1382. Grace

  1383. means we

  1384. are now

  1385. treated and

  1386. treasured as

  1387. his own

  1388. son,

  1389. welcomed

  1390. into his

  1391. eternal

  1392. kingdom.

  1393. So live

  1394. in God's

  1395. grace today.

  1396. Enjoy

  1397. it.

  1398. Know

  1399. it.

  1400. But not

  1401. only do we

  1402. live in

  1403. it,

  1404. but it

  1405. also means

  1406. that we

  1407. treat each

  1408. other with

  1409. grace.

  1410. You see,

  1411. there is

  1412. no place

  1413. for the

  1414. Pharisee.

  1415. Look at

  1416. verse 9.

  1417. Chapter

  1418. 18,

  1419. verse 9.

  1420. To some

  1421. who were

  1422. confident

  1423. of their

  1424. own

  1425. righteousness

  1426. and looked

  1427. down on

  1428. everybody

  1429. else.

  1430. You see,

  1431. we are

  1432. no better

  1433. or no

  1434. worse than

  1435. each other.

  1436. God's

  1437. grace.

  1438. Sometimes we

  1439. have come

  1440. to experience

  1441. God's

  1442. grace and

  1443. yes,

  1444. we have

  1445. seen God

  1446. change us

  1447. and transform

  1448. us and

  1449. the temptation

  1450. is to

  1451. suddenly think,

  1452. well,

  1453. I am

  1454. better than

  1455. those other

  1456. people.

  1457. Well,

  1458. we are no

  1459. better or

  1460. no worse.

  1461. We are all

  1462. responsible for

  1463. this broken

  1464. world in

  1465. which we

  1466. live.

  1467. So what

  1468. we need

  1469. is not

  1470. to condemn

  1471. each other

  1472. and point

  1473. fingers at

  1474. each other,

  1475. but to

  1476. bring grace

  1477. to each

  1478. other,

  1479. to remind

  1480. each other

  1481. that when

  1482. we fall

  1483. and when

  1484. we fail,

  1485. that we

  1486. live in a

  1487. time of

  1488. grace,

  1489. that now

  1490. is the

  1491. time to

  1492. come and

  1493. repent and

  1494. ask God

  1495. to pour

  1496. out his

  1497. mercy upon

  1498. us and

  1499. to help

  1500. us to

  1501. change and

  1502. help us

  1503. to live

  1504. as his

  1505. people.

  1506. We don't

  1507. drag each

  1508. other down

  1509. and condemn,

  1510. we build

  1511. each other

  1512. up with

  1513. the grace

  1514. of God.

  1515. So live

  1516. in his

  1517. grace,

  1518. treat each

  1519. other with

  1520. grace,

  1521. and then

  1522. offer grace

  1523. to the

  1524. world.

  1525. I think

  1526. that's the

  1527. big message

  1528. of this,

  1529. isn't it?

  1530. We live

  1531. in a day

  1532. of grace.

  1533. God has

  1534. delayed

  1535. his judgment.

  1536. He longs

  1537. that none

  1538. would perish,

  1539. but that all

  1540. would come

  1541. and turn

  1542. to him

  1543. just like

  1544. the tax

  1545. collector.

  1546. And so

  1547. we need

  1548. to be

  1549. people who

  1550. practice

  1551. grace and

  1552. who offer

  1553. grace to

  1554. our friends

  1555. and our

  1556. family,

  1557. to the

  1558. world who

  1559. has not

  1560. yet come

  1561. to know

  1562. the good

  1563. news of

  1564. Christ.

  1565. It's not

  1566. our job

  1567. to withhold

  1568. grace from

  1569. people.

  1570. It's not

  1571. our role to

  1572. say to

  1573. somebody,

  1574. you don't

  1575. deserve

  1576. grace.

  1577. That's what

  1578. Pharisees do.

  1579. No,

  1580. we're the

  1581. tax

  1582. collector

  1583. who has

  1584. received

  1585. God's

  1586. grace in

  1587. abundance.

  1588. And now

  1589. turn and

  1590. point other

  1591. people towards

  1592. Jesus so

  1593. that they

  1594. can also

  1595. know and

  1596. experience the

  1597. amazing grace

  1598. of God.

  1599. The king

  1600. has come.

  1601. Grace is

  1602. here.

  1603. The king

  1604. will come.

  1605. Judgment

  1606. awaits.

  1607. May we

  1608. live in

  1609. God's

  1610. grace today.

  1611. Let's pray.

  1612. Father,

  1613. would you

  1614. please,

  1615. by your

  1616. Holy Spirit,

  1617. take this

  1618. word that we

  1619. have thought

  1620. through and

  1621. listened to

  1622. and as we

  1623. leave this

  1624. building that

  1625. you would

  1626. continue to

  1627. work it

  1628. deep into

  1629. our hearts

  1630. and in

  1631. our lives.

  1632. and if

  1633. there is

  1634. any

  1635. pharisaic

  1636. aspect

  1637. in our

  1638. hearts

  1639. that you

  1640. would expose

  1641. it and you

  1642. would show

  1643. it and you

  1644. would turn

  1645. us quickly

  1646. into the

  1647. tax collector

  1648. who just

  1649. comes as we

  1650. are,

  1651. owning it,

  1652. admitting it,

  1653. ready to

  1654. deal with

  1655. it.

  1656. Father,

  1657. you are good

  1658. and gracious.

  1659. We know

  1660. that you

  1661. will not

  1662. turn us

  1663. away,

  1664. but you

  1665. will forgive.

  1666. You will

  1667. change and

  1668. you will

  1669. restore.

  1670. And so we

  1671. long for

  1672. more and

  1673. more of

  1674. your grace

  1675. in our

  1676. lives every

  1677. day.

  1678. asking that

  1679. you would

  1680. help us

  1681. to go

  1682. into the

  1683. community,

  1684. into our

  1685. workplaces

  1686. with our

  1687. colleagues

  1688. that we

  1689. think about,

  1690. with friends

  1691. and with

  1692. family.

  1693. Help us

  1694. to point

  1695. other people

  1696. to the

  1697. King of

  1698. Grace.

  1699. Father,

  1700. please,

  1701. by your

  1702. Spirit,

  1703. use us

  1704. to bring

  1705. people to

  1706. yourself.

  1707. For we

  1708. know you

  1709. are a

  1710. just

  1711. God,

  1712. and one

  1713. day you

  1714. will

  1715. come.

  1716. Please

  1717. make us

  1718. prepared and

  1719. ready.

  1720. We ask

  1721. this for

  1722. your glory.

  1723. Amen.
