  1. Ephesians chapter 6 verses 1 to 4, children and parents.

    Ephesians 6:1–4

  2. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

  3. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise,

  4. that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.

  5. Fathers, do not exasperate your children.

  6. Instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

  7. Thank you very much.

  8. Thanks, Ralph.

  9. Sorry, I'll just get myself adjusted here.

  10. Thank you.

  11. Thank you.

  12. Thank you.

  13. Thank you.

  14. Okay, good morning, everyone.

  15. Today, I want us to look at the topic of, well, in particular children, but also parents in the church.

  16. And many of us this morning fall into the category of being a parent, and so I want to speak to you especially.

  17. And some of us fall into the category of children.

  18. I want to speak to you especially as well.

  19. Some are children here legally, because, well, you're under 18, so you're a child.

  20. And some are here as children practically.

  21. So, okay, you've gotten over 18, but mom and dad are still paying most of the bills.

  22. And you haven't quite reached full independence yet, have you?

  23. Okay, so whether you're a legal child or a functional child, listen up this morning.

  24. Now, if you're not a child or a parent, I know what you're already thinking.

  25. Well, please don't think that you have a sermon-free Sunday ahead where the old lights can switch off and you can start staring at the ceiling.

  26. Because I want us all to see, and I hope this is what we see, that discussions around children and parents, what we're going to look at this morning,

  27. even though we're talking about children and parents in a physical family, we're doing so in the context of another family.

  28. And the context of that other family is the church, a spiritual family, which we are all part of,

  29. regardless of our status as a parent or a child or anything like that.

  30. So this sermon is for all of us as the church, as God's people.

  31. But let's come back to parents and children.

  32. Why are you here with family this morning?

  33. Have you ever sat down as a family and had that conversation?

  34. Why do we go to church?

  35. For parents, it might be as simple as this, and this is just one option.

  36. You come to church.

  37. Your children are going to come to church.

  38. You see value in the church providing a stabilizing influence on your child's life,

  39. and that's going to equip them into the future and somehow help them in the long term to have a successful and a happy and a well-adjusted life.

  40. So you're here as parents.

  41. Your children are going to come, and you see benefit to that.

  42. And if you're here as a child, well, then, you know, it's very possible that you're only here because it's expected.

  43. Maybe you're just here out of habit.

  44. It's grand, but really it's a bit samey each week.

  45. I've recounted the bricks behind the preacher's head a hundred times, and, you know, they haven't changed in all that time.

  46. It's not something I look forward to.

  47. You know, none of my friends are here.

  48. It's just a bit of a, I don't know.

  49. I'm sure I'm here anyway.

  50. Now, don't misunderstand me when I say that about parents and motivation and children and motivation.

  51. It's great, and it's good that you are here this morning for whatever reason.

  52. There is genuinely no better place to be on a Sunday than gathering here as a church that is being built by Jesus.

  53. But let's consider what it means to be here as children in the church,

  54. and let us consider what it means to be here as parents in the church.

  55. Is it possible that we can shape our understanding and motivation this morning by using the Word of God,

  56. that sharp sword that divides to the very heart of the issue,

  57. so that we can take the Word of God and take children and parents and bring the Word to bear on it and learn from the Bible?

  58. Then, as we come as a child or as we come as a parent, we're coming together, together in God's community,

  59. not just out of habit or expectation or compulsion,

  60. but we will want to come because of the irresistible call of God on our lives,

  61. to be in fellowship with Him and to be in fellowship with other believers.

  62. And then that burden and guilt that comes from those faulty ideas of church attendance

  63. can be replaced by the big picture of God's kingdom.

  64. And, you know, that's where I want to be, and I hope it's where you want to be this morning as well.

  65. The first thing is that I think our vision is really quite dull.

  66. For many reasons, you know, we like verses in the Bible like Ephesians chapter 6, verses 1 to 4,

    Ephesians 6:1–4

  67. and we are going to focus on these verses this morning.

  68. The verses, as you look at them in your Bible, they're short, direct.

  69. You know, here are some things for children.

  70. We move on.

  71. Verse 4, here are some things for fathers.

  72. Mr. Preacher, we say, just give me a few stories to help me understand.

  73. Give me a few extra applications to think about.

  74. So I read these verses, help me understand, and give me a few stories, a few applications,

  75. and maybe even encourage me to practice them this week.

  76. And that's often how we come to our Bibles and maybe come on a Sunday.

  77. We want the Bible to function like a kind of a look-up manual for life.

  78. So it kind of goes like this.

  79. Well, career, career.

  80. I should look at my Bible.

  81. So we try and find some verses on work, and that's it.

  82. We dip in and find those verses about work.

  83. And we want to tune up our marriage.

  84. You know, we feel that tension.

  85. And, well, the Bible, it's a marriage manual.

  86. You know, I can find some verses.

  87. Actually, if I look back at the end of chapter 5,

  88. wives and husbands, some good verses, maybe they'll come in handy someday.

  89. I must remember that, Ephesians 5, marriage.

  90. Children and how to raise them.

  91. Well, there are verses for that, aren't they?

  92. We have some in front of us.

  93. But instead of doing that, if we take the time, like we're doing now,

  94. and we read the Bible as it is,

  95. as the Word of God to us as believers,

  96. I think we quickly find out that it's not really a parenting manual after all.

  97. It's not really functioning as a marriage manual after all.

  98. You see the Bible.

  99. The Bible, if it's a manual at all,

  100. it's a manual on how to know God.

  101. That's what the Bible is primarily.

  102. So as we open it up and look for verses about children,

  103. if we want to think about children and parenting,

  104. I want us to remember two things.

  105. And the first thing is that,

  106. actually there aren't that many verses directly about children at all.

  107. In the New Testament letters,

  108. there are just two passages, I think,

  109. and I'm open to correction,

  110. that are directed to children.

  111. So there's the one that we've read in Ephesians,

  112. these couple of verses here, in Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  113. and there's nearly identical words in Colossians chapter 3,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  114. also written by the Apostle Paul,

  115. so the same author.

  116. And he has similar things to say in both places.

  117. So the Bible has very little,

  118. in terms of direct commands,

  119. about living as Christian children.

  120. So the Bible has very little direct commands,

  121. directed to Christian children.

  122. There's maybe less than five in total in the New Testament.

  123. And the second thing I want us to notice,

  124. as we go about trying to look at children and parenting the Bible,

  125. is that if we take that approach of just looking at those verses,

  126. we're going to really miss what God is saying to children,

  127. if we just focus on those verses.

  128. In our eagerness to want to make life simple and easy,

  129. we just miss the point.

  130. You see, the most amazing thing about Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  131. and these verses 1 to 4,

  132. is the context in which Paul is addressing children.

  133. You see, Paul's letter is written to believers in the church,

  134. and we see that right from the beginning.

  135. Ephesians chapter 1 and verse 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  136. If you turn back to the start of Ephesians,

  137. you'll see that.

  138. Paul is very good at introducing himself,

  139. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,

  140. to the saints in Ephesus,

  141. the faithful in Christ Jesus.

  142. Saints, or holy ones,

  143. or those that have been called out of darkness

  144. and called into the light.

  145. That's who Paul is writing to.

  146. So when Paul turns then,

  147. if we get to chapter 6 and verse 1,

  148. and he says,

  149. children,

  150. obey your parents in the Lord,

  151. for this is right,

  152. the children that he's speaking to here

  153. are part of that group.

  154. From chapter 1 and verse 1,

  155. it's the same group.

  156. It's the saints in Ephesus.

  157. Believers.

  158. Children are part of the church.

  159. Children are there as believers,

  160. as those who have been born again,

  161. as those that are able to sit in the congregation

  162. and have a letter from the apostle Paul

  163. read out to them,

  164. a letter that applies to them

  165. from chapter 1, verse 1,

  166. all the way through to chapter 6 and verse 24.

  167. And then when we hit 6, 1,

  168. and he speaks to children,

  169. it's in that big context.

  170. It's not that everything else that's gone before

  171. and everything else that goes after

  172. doesn't apply to children in the church.

  173. Not at all.

  174. All of it applies.

  175. You see, as I said,

  176. I think our hearts are quite dull at times,

  177. and our vision is quite dull.

  178. We want this book to function like a rule book,

  179. to sort our lives out.

  180. That's our tendency, isn't it,

  181. in our hearts.

  182. We like the law.

  183. We like the rules

  184. that we can measure ourselves again.

  185. And the Lord instead offers us

  186. this amazing book,

  187. a book that's full of poetry,

  188. a book that's full of history

  189. and prophecy, music,

  190. proverbs,

  191. and instruction,

  192. so that we can know God

  193. in ways that we would never know Him

  194. if it was just a manual.

  195. Imagine if it was just a book

  196. of things to do.

  197. Would we know the Lord?

  198. No, but it's the way

  199. all those passages interact

  200. and the richness

  201. and the depth

  202. of what God has given us.

  203. So let's expand some of our horizons

  204. this morning

  205. and consider children

  206. by seeing what the church is.

  207. And there's a number of things

  208. I just want to look at from Ephesians.

  209. Believing children

  210. are included in God's new people.

  211. There's lots of images

  212. to describe the church,

  213. and there's no one image

  214. that captures everything.

  215. But one of the images

  216. that Paul uses

  217. to help us understand the church

  218. is that of

  219. a new people of God

  220. or a new person of God.

  221. He tells us that those

  222. who were previously

  223. outside of God's plan,

  224. they are the Gentiles,

  225. those who were uncircumcised.

  226. And to be a Gentile

  227. basically meant

  228. that you weren't a Jew.

  229. So there was one national group

  230. called the Jews

  231. who were circumcised.

  232. And in every other nation

  233. in the world,

  234. I assume all of us here,

  235. and nations all over the world,

  236. all of those other people

  237. were considered Gentiles.

  238. And they were, in a sense,

  239. outside of God's plan,

  240. or it looked like

  241. they were outside of God's plan.

  242. But those who were

  243. previously outside,

  244. because of the coming of Jesus,

  245. have been included

  246. in God's people.

  247. And that means

  248. some radical changes

  249. for the people of God

  250. in the New Testament.

  251. And we see that

  252. in chapter 2.

  253. So if you could turn

  254. to chapter 2

  255. in your Bibles,

  256. I think it'll be a help.

  257. Chapter 2,

  258. and reading

  259. verse 11.

  260. Therefore,

  261. remember that formally,

  262. you who were Gentiles

  263. by birth

  264. and called uncircumcised

  265. by those who call themselves

  266. a circumcision,

  267. that done in the body

  268. by the hands of men,

  269. remember that that time

  270. you were separate from Israel,

  271. separate from Christ,

  272. excluded from citizenship

  273. in Israel,

  274. and foreigners

  275. to the covenants

  276. of the promise

  277. without hope

  278. and without God

  279. in the world.

  280. And this is the big but.

  281. But now,

  282. in Christ Jesus,

  283. you who once far away

  284. have been brought near

  285. through the blood of Christ.

  286. For he himself

  287. is our peace

  288. who has made

  289. the two one.

  290. You see that?

  291. Who has made the two one

  292. and destroyed the barrier,

  293. the dividing line

  294. of,

  295. dividing wall

  296. of hostility

  297. by abolishing

  298. in his flesh

  299. the law

  300. with its commandments

  301. and regulations.

  302. And this is the key bit.

  303. His purpose

  304. was to create himself

  305. one new man

  306. out of the two,

  307. thus making peace,

  308. and in this one body

  309. to reconcile both of them

  310. to God

  311. through the cross

  312. by which he put to death

  313. their hostility.

  314. So you see,

  315. we have Jews

  316. who believed in Jesus

  317. and we have Gentiles

  318. who believed in Jesus.

  319. And they've come together

  320. and they are God's new one man

  321. or God's new people.

  322. And we need to remember that

  323. so when we come to Ephesians

    Ephesians 6:1

  324. chapter 6 verse 1

  325. and we read

  326. children,

  327. obey your parents

  328. and the Lord

  329. for this is right,

  330. that Paul is writing

  331. to believe in children.

  332. And Paul sees children

  333. in the church

  334. as part of this new man.

  335. It is a new humanity

  336. that's made up

  337. of young and old

  338. who have been reconciled

  339. together

  340. regardless of age

  341. if they believe

  342. through Jesus' death.

  343. So as we gather,

  344. as we gather as adults,

  345. as we gather as children,

  346. as children,

  347. we're gathering

  348. as God's new people.

  349. You see,

  350. Jesus in his death

  351. has torn down

  352. all kinds of barriers.

  353. We see here

  354. that he's torn down

  355. barriers between

  356. the Jews

  357. and the Gentiles,

  358. those who are on the inside

  359. and those who are

  360. on the outside.

  361. Jesus' death

  362. tears down barriers

  363. between men and women,

  364. between races,

  365. between gender,

  366. between status

  367. and community.

  368. Tears down barriers,

  369. I believe,

  370. of age as well

  371. between an adult

  372. and a child.

  373. This is not a community

  374. that you were born

  375. physically into.

  376. You don't inherit traits.

  377. We don't inherit

  378. the name Christian

  379. because of our parents.

  380. You know,

  381. we named our son,

  382. our eldest son,

  383. Christopher.

  384. And that means

  385. one who carries

  386. Christ in his heart.

  387. So, you know,

  388. that sounds great.

  389. But in naming him

  390. Christopher,

  391. it didn't make him

  392. carry Christ in his heart.

  393. You understand that.

  394. It doesn't,

  395. just because we gave him

  396. the name,

  397. doesn't mean that

  398. changed him fundamentally.

  399. But it is our hope

  400. for our son

  401. that as he grows

  402. and as he learns

  403. he puts his trust

  404. in Jesus

  405. so his name

  406. would become true

  407. eventually

  408. that he would be

  409. one who carries Christ.

  410. But it doesn't

  411. function like that.

  412. We don't bequeath

  413. our belief

  414. to our children.

  415. No,

  416. this is a community,

  417. the church,

  418. that you are born

  419. spiritually into.

  420. The new people of God

  421. means that children

  422. are here as believers

  423. in their own right.

  424. Children are here

  425. as believers

  426. on the same footing

  427. as adults

  428. because of their trust

  429. in Jesus.

  430. The second thing

  431. we want to see

  432. from Ephesians

  433. is that of

  434. the growing

  435. in the body of Christ.

  436. Children are part

  437. of the body of Christ.

  438. Our connection

  439. to Christ

  440. is such that Paul

  441. can talk about

  442. us being the body

  443. of Christ

  444. and we need to be

  445. careful here

  446. in our heads

  447. the kind of image

  448. we have.

  449. It doesn't mean

  450. that Christ needs us

  451. in order in some way

  452. to be complete

  453. that apart from his body

  454. Christ is somehow

  455. less than God.

  456. If it wasn't for us

  457. well then Christ

  458. would be going around

  459. like a disembodied head

  460. with no limbs

  461. and no torso.

  462. Rather to say

  463. that we are his body

  464. is that we are

  465. united by faith

  466. to Jesus

  467. and we become

  468. like Jesus.

  469. And another way

  470. that we are his body

  471. is the idea

  472. of growing together.

  473. So we are united

  474. to Christ

  475. we are like Christ

  476. and therefore

  477. are his body.

  478. But I think

  479. one of the most

  480. helpful things

  481. again an image

  482. of the church

  483. is that we are

  484. growing together

  485. children and adults

  486. alike.

  487. There is one body

  488. and we see that

  489. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  490. chapter 4

  491. and we are going

  492. to move a bit

  493. around Ephesians

  494. so it is good

  495. if you can keep

  496. your Bibles open.

  497. Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  498. you see there

  499. at the start

  500. of chapter 4

  501. verse 4

  502. there is one body

  503. and one spirit.

  504. And as you go

  505. down through those

  506. verses Paul

  507. goes on to speak

  508. of the gifts

  509. that God has given

  510. to the church

  511. so that if we

  512. come down

  513. let's see

  514. to Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:12

  515. chapter 4

  516. verse 12

  517. and he talks

  518. about the gifts.

  519. The gifts are given

  520. to prepare God's people

  521. for works of service

  522. so that the body

  523. of Christ

  524. may be built up

  525. until we all

  526. reach unity

  527. in the faith

  528. and in the knowledge

  529. of the Son of God

  530. and become mature

  531. attaining to the

  532. whole measure

  533. of the fullness

  534. of Christ.

  535. And down to

  536. verse 15

  537. chapter 4

  538. instead

  539. speaking the truth

  540. in love

  541. we will in all things

  542. grow up into him

  543. who is the head

  544. that is Christ

  545. and from him

  546. the whole body

  547. joined and held together

  548. by every supporting

  549. ligament

  550. grows

  551. and builds itself

  552. up in love

  553. so as each

  554. part

  555. does

  556. its

  557. work.

  558. It's a beautiful

  559. picture of the church

  560. as a living organism

  561. full of life

  562. as it grows

  563. towards maturity.

  564. Each member

  565. of the body

  566. has an important

  567. part in supporting

  568. the others.

  569. Children

  570. that love Jesus

  571. I don't know if you've

  572. thought about this

  573. children that love Jesus

  574. and know Jesus

  575. have the spirit

  576. of Christ

  577. living in them

  578. as much as

  579. you as an adult

  580. as the spirit

  581. of Christ

  582. which means

  583. that they display

  584. the fruit

  585. of the spirit

  586. and I believe

  587. have gifts

  588. from the spirit

  589. gifts that are

  590. given by the Holy

  591. Spirit to children

  592. so they can help

  593. build the body

  594. they are part of

  595. this body building

  596. work

  597. so we need to

  598. consider how

  599. children can serve

  600. and minister

  601. in this church

  602. in the church

  603. and in this church

  604. in particular

  605. and that's

  606. I don't have time

  607. to expound that

  608. but it's a thought

  609. I want us to

  610. take away this

  611. morning and

  612. consider further

  613. how can we

  614. actively include

  615. our children

  616. in this body

  617. work

  618. because these

  619. verses

  620. it's important

  621. now

  622. finally

  623. in this part

  624. believing children

  625. need to keep

  626. coming back

  627. to the gospel

  628. message

  629. believing children

  630. and adults

  631. you see

  632. the reason why

  633. we're part of the

  634. body

  635. and the reason

  636. why we're

  637. growing into

  638. God's new people

  639. is because we

  640. believe the same

  641. message

  642. the same

  643. unique message

  644. of Jesus

  645. Christ

  646. so our growth

  647. together as the

  648. body of Christ

  649. into the people

  650. of God

  651. is only because

  652. we have been

  653. made alive

  654. in Christ

  655. in the first

  656. place

  657. children

  658. you are not

  659. saved

  660. and I have to

  661. reinforce this

  662. again

  663. you are not

  664. saved by your

  665. parents faith

  666. children

  667. you are not

  668. saved by how

  669. well you obey

  670. them in the

  671. home

  672. children

  673. you are not

  674. saved by your

  675. ability not

  676. to fight with

  677. your brother

  678. and sister

  679. okay

  680. they are not

  681. the things

  682. that save

  683. you

  684. children

  685. you come

  686. into the

  687. family of

  688. God

  689. and the

  690. body of

  691. Christ

  692. because of

  693. grace

  694. because of

  695. grace

  696. undeserved

  697. love that's

  698. been shown

  699. to you

  700. by your

  701. heavenly

  702. father

  703. I want to

  704. read a

  705. slightly longer

  706. section

  707. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  708. chapter 2

  709. from verse 1

  710. if you'd like

  711. to turn there

  712. just the 10

  713. verses there

  714. and just

  715. for us to

  716. take in the

  717. sweep of

  718. what it

  719. means to

  720. be born

  721. again

  722. it's an

  723. old fashioned

  724. phrase in

  725. some ways

  726. and one that

  727. drops out of

  728. usage sometimes

  729. in Christian

  730. circles

  731. but it's a

  732. good one

  733. to be born

  734. again for

  735. those that

  736. know the

  737. reality of

  738. what it is

  739. to be alive

  740. in Christ

  741. I want you

  742. this morning

  743. adult and

  744. child alike

  745. to be reminded

  746. of these

  747. words to

  748. live again

  749. in the

  750. truth that

  751. you have

  752. been shown

  753. and if

  754. these words

  755. do not

  756. resonate with

  757. your heart

  758. then I

  759. think you

  760. need to

  761. ask am

  762. I still

  763. dead in

  764. my own

  765. sins

  766. now this

  767. is serious

  768. we're either

  769. alive or

  770. we're dead

  771. this morning

  772. to these

  773. words

  774. so I

  775. ask that

  776. as the

  777. word of

  778. God

  779. peels

  780. back the

  781. layers of

  782. your life

  783. ask yourself

  784. do these

  785. words of

  786. scripture

  787. do they

  788. do they

  789. do they

  790. do they

  791. penetrate

  792. and rest

  793. in my

  794. heart

  795. or do

  796. they cause

  797. a stabbing

  798. of my

  799. conscience

  800. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  801. chapter 2

  802. and verse

  803. 1

  804. as for

  805. you

  806. you were

  807. dead in

  808. your

  809. transgressions

  810. and sins

  811. in which

  812. you used

  813. to live

  814. when you

  815. followed the

  816. ways of

  817. this world

  818. and of

  819. the ruler

  820. of the

  821. kingdom

  822. of the

  823. air

  824. the spirit

  825. who is

  826. now at

  827. work

  828. in those

  829. who are

  830. disobedient

  831. all of

  832. us also

  833. lived among

  834. them at

  835. one time

  836. gratifying

  837. the cravings

  838. of our

  839. sinful

  840. nature

  841. and following

  842. its desires

  843. and thoughts

  844. like the

  845. rest we

  846. were by

  847. nature

  848. objects

  849. of wrath

  850. but

  851. because of

  852. his great

  853. love for

  854. us

  855. God who

  856. is rich

  857. in mercy

  858. made us

  859. alive with

  860. Christ

  861. even when

  862. we were

  863. dead in

  864. transgressions

  865. it is by

  866. grace you

  867. have been

  868. saved

  869. and God

  870. raised us

  871. up with

  872. Christ

  873. and seated

  874. us with

  875. him in

  876. the heavenly

  877. realms

  878. in Christ

  879. Jesus

  880. in order

  881. that in

  882. the coming

  883. ages

  884. he might

  885. show the

  886. incomparable

  887. riches of

  888. his grace

  889. expressed in

  890. his kindness

  891. to us

  892. in Christ

  893. Jesus

  894. for it

  895. is by

  896. grace you

  897. have been

  898. saved

  899. through faith

  900. and it's

  901. not from

  902. yourselves

  903. it is the

  904. gift of

  905. God

  906. not by

  907. works

  908. so that

  909. no one

  910. can boast

  911. for we

  912. were God's

  913. workmanship

  914. created in

  915. Christ Jesus

  916. to do

  917. good works

  918. which God

  919. prepared

  920. in advance

  921. for us

  922. to do

  923. finally

  924. I want us

  925. to come

  926. back to

  927. Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  928. chapter 6

  929. it might

  930. seem like a

  931. big detour

  932. but I

  933. think it's

  934. absolutely

  935. critical

  936. if we're

  937. going to

  938. look at

  939. verses

  940. like the

  941. ones in

  942. Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  943. chapter 6

  944. that we

  945. look at

  946. that

  947. those

  948. ideas

  949. of the

  950. church

  951. and what

  952. it means

  953. firstly

  954. I want

  955. to come

  956. back again

  957. to those

  958. that don't

  959. consider

  960. themselves

  961. children

  962. or don't

  963. consider

  964. themselves

  965. parents

  966. or think

  967. they're past

  968. that stage

  969. please

  970. listen

  971. I think

  972. one

  973. application

  974. one thing

  975. to take

  976. on board

  977. is that

  978. you have

  979. a role

  980. to play

  981. you have

  982. a role

  983. to play

  984. as part

  985. of the

  986. new

  987. people

  988. of God

  989. to be

  990. a

  991. spiritual

  992. parent

  993. to others

  994. and I hope

  995. you see

  996. that being

  997. part of

  998. the community

  999. of God

  1000. being a

  1001. parent

  1002. and being

  1003. a child

  1004. and those

  1005. things are

  1006. secondary

  1007. we have

  1008. a primary

  1009. role

  1010. and we

  1011. can consider

  1012. ourselves

  1013. as spiritual

  1014. parents

  1015. to others

  1016. and I

  1017. believe

  1018. especially

  1019. you can

  1020. be a

  1021. spiritual

  1022. parent

  1023. to

  1024. children

  1025. in the

  1026. church

  1027. whether

  1028. that's

  1029. in direct

  1030. service

  1031. of something

  1032. like

  1033. creche

  1034. or Sunday

  1035. school

  1036. like what's

  1037. happening

  1038. outside

  1039. now

  1040. or just

  1041. by being

  1042. here each

  1043. Sunday

  1044. and offering

  1045. a kind

  1046. word of

  1047. encouragement

  1048. to our

  1049. children

  1050. to our

  1051. kids

  1052. in the

  1053. church

  1054. I hope

  1055. that you

  1056. see from

  1057. Ephesians

  1058. that your

  1059. role in

  1060. the body

  1061. in the

  1062. family

  1063. of God

  1064. absolutely

  1065. matters

  1066. okay

  1067. so as we

  1068. look now

  1069. just the

  1070. children and

  1071. parents in

  1072. particular

  1073. don't

  1074. don't think

  1075. it's not

  1076. for me

  1077. it is

  1078. all of it

  1079. is in

  1080. that

  1081. context

  1082. I

  1083. trust

  1084. it's

  1085. plain

  1086. and as

  1087. we come

  1088. to chapter

  1089. six and

  1090. verse one

  1091. and read

  1092. children

  1093. obey your

  1094. parents in

  1095. the Lord

  1096. for this

  1097. is right

  1098. that Paul

  1099. is speaking

  1100. directly to

  1101. children in

  1102. the church

  1103. body

  1104. he expects

  1105. them to be

  1106. there

  1107. he expects

  1108. the children

  1109. to be in

  1110. church in

  1111. Ephesus

  1112. hearing this

  1113. letter read

  1114. out

  1115. and these

  1116. children are

  1117. believers

  1118. and these

  1119. children are

  1120. part of the

  1121. church

  1122. in their

  1123. own right

  1124. all of

  1125. this

  1126. sections

  1127. about

  1128. section

  1129. about

  1130. relationships

  1131. so starting

  1132. from the

  1133. middle of

  1134. chapter five

  1135. wives and

  1136. husbands

  1137. children and

  1138. parents

  1139. slaves and

  1140. masters

  1141. all of this

  1142. section is

  1143. about relationships

  1144. within and

  1145. transform because

  1146. of the church

  1147. that's the

  1148. primary context

  1149. so yes

  1150. as I've said

  1151. Christ has

  1152. made us all

  1153. one

  1154. the new

  1155. people of

  1156. God

  1157. his body

  1158. the church

  1159. but that

  1160. doesn't mean

  1161. that the

  1162. structures

  1163. outside the

  1164. church

  1165. have somehow

  1166. disbanded

  1167. and there's

  1168. no longer

  1169. children or

  1170. parents

  1171. and that all

  1172. are left

  1173. are identical

  1174. Lego versions

  1175. of people

  1176. in the church

  1177. we're all

  1178. the same

  1179. that's not

  1180. right

  1181. no

  1182. husbands and

  1183. wives are

  1184. still husbands

  1185. and wives

  1186. in the church

  1187. children and

  1188. parents are

  1189. still children

  1190. and parents

  1191. in the church

  1192. and slaves

  1193. and masters

  1194. or I guess

  1195. more applicable

  1196. to most of us

  1197. the idea of

  1198. employers and

  1199. employees

  1200. are still

  1201. employers and

  1202. employees in

  1203. the church

  1204. and you know

  1205. are still slaves

  1206. and masters

  1207. in the church

  1208. so I want to

  1209. see that Paul

  1210. is addressing

  1211. children and

  1212. parents as

  1213. children and

  1214. parents within

  1215. the context of

  1216. this body

  1217. the church

  1218. community

  1219. so Paul

  1220. can say

  1221. then in

  1222. chapter 6

  1223. and verse 1

  1224. children obey

  1225. your parents

  1226. in the Lord

  1227. you see

  1228. obedience is to

  1229. be powered

  1230. in children

  1231. that know

  1232. Jesus

  1233. not by sheer

  1234. will

  1235. but they're

  1236. to have the

  1237. help of the

  1238. Holy Spirit

  1239. because they

  1240. know Jesus

  1241. themselves

  1242. because these

  1243. children have

  1244. been born again

  1245. they can obey

  1246. their parents

  1247. now in the

  1248. Lord

  1249. children

  1250. do you know

  1251. Jesus as

  1252. your Lord

  1253. then you

  1254. should obey

  1255. your parents

  1256. in the Lord

  1257. for this

  1258. is right

  1259. and that phrase

  1260. at the end

  1261. I think it gives

  1262. us a sense

  1263. that it's

  1264. obvious

  1265. it's obvious

  1266. it's right

  1267. the world

  1268. over

  1269. even apart

  1270. from the Bible

  1271. even if you

  1272. didn't have

  1273. the Bible

  1274. even if you

  1275. didn't know

  1276. Jesus

  1277. we simply

  1278. know that

  1279. being part

  1280. of this

  1281. creation

  1282. part of

  1283. this world

  1284. that it

  1285. is right

  1286. and proper

  1287. to obey

  1288. our parents

  1289. but now

  1290. now you

  1291. can do it

  1292. as a believer

  1293. in the life

  1294. of the church

  1295. as children

  1296. and parents

  1297. that are

  1298. growing together

  1299. in the body

  1300. do you see

  1301. that

  1302. your obedience

  1303. to your parents

  1304. is transformed

  1305. you grow

  1306. together

  1307. in the same

  1308. body

  1309. and the joy

  1310. of that

  1311. is someday

  1312. that you're

  1313. going to

  1314. stand

  1315. maybe near

  1316. your parents

  1317. before the

  1318. Lord

  1319. and at

  1320. that point

  1321. your identity

  1322. is not going

  1323. to be as

  1324. children and

  1325. parents

  1326. but it's

  1327. going to

  1328. be as

  1329. brothers

  1330. and sisters

  1331. in Christ

  1332. isn't that

  1333. amazing

  1334. and I think

  1335. of that

  1336. as parents

  1337. you know

  1338. we stand

  1339. with our

  1340. children

  1341. and they're

  1342. our children

  1343. but imagine

  1344. standing with

  1345. them that

  1346. day

  1347. and there are

  1348. brothers or

  1349. fellow brothers

  1350. and sisters

  1351. in Christ

  1352. part of the

  1353. body that

  1354. have grown up

  1355. in the body

  1356. of Christ

  1357. the new

  1358. people of

  1359. God

  1360. that's the

  1361. kind of

  1362. vision that

  1363. we need to

  1364. keep in our

  1365. minds

  1366. now children

  1367. you might ask

  1368. this question

  1369. this may be

  1370. more practical

  1371. how long

  1372. do I have

  1373. to obey

  1374. for

  1375. what are

  1376. the limits

  1377. well I think

  1378. that's something

  1379. that's going

  1380. to depend

  1381. on culture

  1382. and context

  1383. in Ireland

  1384. 18

  1385. 21

  1386. legally it's

  1387. 18

  1388. so when you're

  1389. 18

  1390. parents can

  1391. kick you out

  1392. your parents

  1393. are legally

  1394. responsible for

  1395. you and you

  1396. live under

  1397. their rule

  1398. at least

  1399. until 18

  1400. and even

  1401. after that

  1402. time as I

  1403. said you

  1404. may remain

  1405. dependent on

  1406. your parents

  1407. so as you

  1408. go through

  1409. college

  1410. or maybe

  1411. you're just

  1412. trying to

  1413. start to

  1414. find your

  1415. feet after

  1416. school and

  1417. work and

  1418. you're still

  1419. living at

  1420. home things

  1421. like that

  1422. so it's

  1423. open and

  1424. I think you

  1425. need wisdom

  1426. as to how

  1427. you obey

  1428. and particularly

  1429. after 18

  1430. but and this

  1431. is partly

  1432. directed towards

  1433. parents there

  1434. should be an

  1435. increasing sense

  1436. of freedom

  1437. as you grow

  1438. up okay

  1439. parents we need

  1440. to be aware

  1441. of that

  1442. they're not

  1443. for under

  1444. 14 okay

  1445. but the

  1446. basic call

  1447. on your

  1448. life as a

  1449. believer in

  1450. the church as

  1451. a child who

  1452. believes towards

  1453. your parents

  1454. is to obey

  1455. them okay

  1456. I'm not going to

  1457. fudge that or

  1458. ignore that that's

  1459. that's what the

  1460. word says to you

  1461. this morning

  1462. but you are

  1463. equal with your

  1464. parents in

  1465. Christ and you

  1466. are equal in

  1467. the church yet

  1468. God in his

  1469. wisdom has

  1470. your parents

  1471. in a role

  1472. of authority

  1473. that provides

  1474. protection

  1475. provides comfort

  1476. and provides

  1477. nurture for

  1478. you that is

  1479. why Paul also

  1480. says that you're

  1481. to honor your

  1482. parents and

  1483. that is something

  1484. that stretches

  1485. beyond 18

  1486. there's I don't

  1487. think there's an

  1488. end in sight

  1489. there in doing

  1490. so he says that

  1491. it will go well

  1492. with you and

  1493. you may enjoy

  1494. long life on

  1495. the earth and

  1496. there's a there's

  1497. a general promise

  1498. there and I

  1499. think an indication

  1500. that it's right

  1501. for children to

  1502. honor their

  1503. parents for a

  1504. long time and

  1505. that that has a

  1506. benefit to those

  1507. children to those

  1508. parents and I

  1509. believe society as

  1510. a whole one of

  1511. the signs of the

  1512. end times Paul

  1513. says is that

  1514. children will

  1515. reject their

  1516. parents and not

  1517. be under their

  1518. authority and

  1519. that's a sign of

  1520. things collapsing

  1521. and being wrong

  1522. so I think there

  1523. is a benefit to

  1524. children to

  1525. parents and to

  1526. society as a

  1527. whole to see

  1528. children honor

  1529. their parents

  1530. throughout their

  1531. lives

  1532. now to

  1533. parents

  1534. first for

  1535. children

  1536. I'm off the

  1537. hook now

  1538. you can relax

  1539. to parents and

  1540. especially fathers

  1541. now it does say

  1542. fathers but I

  1543. don't think it

  1544. excludes mothers

  1545. there's some

  1546. argument that the

  1547. word fathers here

  1548. functions similarly

  1549. to brothers in

  1550. the Bible

  1551. sometimes you see

  1552. brothers and

  1553. actually means

  1554. brothers and

  1555. sisters so this

  1556. is this I think

  1557. can be more

  1558. generally addressed

  1559. to parents but

  1560. especially fathers

  1561. and I think

  1562. that's fair

  1563. firstly what it

  1564. doesn't say it

  1565. doesn't say that

  1566. you are to assert

  1567. your authority over

  1568. your children and

  1569. make sure that they

  1570. obey you I've

  1571. looked I can't

  1572. find it in these

  1573. verses the command

  1574. is to children to

  1575. obey not fathers

  1576. to make them and

  1577. this is the same

  1578. idea throughout this

  1579. section for wives

  1580. and husbands and

  1581. for slaves and

  1582. masters those that

  1583. are in the position

  1584. and I use this

  1585. word carefully and

  1586. don't misunderstand

  1587. me those in the

  1588. position of submission

  1589. to good authority

  1590. are commanded to

  1591. live under that

  1592. authority but

  1593. husbands are not

  1594. commanded to lord it

  1595. over their wives

  1596. parents are not

  1597. told to rule over

  1598. their children and

  1599. masters are not

  1600. told to dominate

  1601. their slaves it's

  1602. quite the opposite

  1603. in all three cases

  1604. the exercise of

  1605. authority is to

  1606. serve and to love

1607. and to care and to

  1608. nurture there's no

  1609. sense in any of

  1610. this wives and

  1611. husbands children

  1612. and parents slaves

  1613. and masters of

  1614. of domination and

  1615. forcing your will

  1616. upon another so

  1617. fathers what does

  1618. it say if that's

  1619. not what it's not

  1620. what it doesn't say

  1621. what does it say

  1622. well I think

  1623. possibly the wisest

  1624. few words that

  1625. could be written on

  1626. this subject fathers

  1627. do not exasperate

  1628. your children do

  1629. not exasperate do

  1630. not embitter your

  1631. children I hope you

1632. have a sense of what

  1633. that means in

  1634. exasperation and

  1635. bitter in all your

  1636. dealings with them

  1637. when they push you

1638. right to the edge to

  1639. anger when they

  1640. disappoint you when

  1641. they when they hurt

  1642. you and when when

  1643. things flare up you're

  1644. not to respond with

  1645. bitterness and

  1646. impatience you're not

  1647. to make their hearts

  1648. hard are your

  1649. children displaying a

  1650. hard heart that

1651. that could be down to

  1652. you in which case

  1653. you're failing to

  1654. heed the word of

  1655. God you're failing to

  1656. heed the wisdom that

1657. is here you want to

  1658. discipline your

  1659. children and that is

  1660. good and it's loving

  1661. to care for your

  1662. children in that way

  1663. to discipline them

  1664. but how can you

  1665. demonstrate discipline

  1666. to your son or

  1667. daughter daughter when

  1668. you lose the plot

1669. when you fly off the

  1670. handle at the very

  1671. moment that you say

  1672. that you were doing

  1673. it for their

  1674. discipline have you

  1675. thought about that

  1676. that's that's hard

  1677. stop think pray breathe

  1678. does your child really

1679. need to be shouted at

  1680. because they spilt that

  1681. drink even if 30

  1682. seconds ago you told

  1683. them just just just

1684. push it in a bit from

1685. the edge of the table

  1686. love and then it

  1687. spills and and you

  1688. know the reaction are

  1689. you showing any level

  1690. of discipline yourself

  1691. when you let loose

  1692. with that barrage of

  1693. shouts and commands

1694. and I lay bare like

1695. this for my own sake

1696. this morning I am often

  1697. harsh and often hard

  1698. with my own three

  1699. precious children oh

1700. lord forgive me if I

1701. if I should ever embitter

  1702. my children fathers and

  1703. mothers do not

  1704. exasperate your

  1705. children for their

  1706. hard hearts will will

1707. start to turn away from

1708. you as a parent and

1709. even turn away from the

  1710. lord they might do

  1711. their duty till they're

  1712. 18 they might stick

  1713. stick until then but

1714. believe me if you have

  1715. embittered their hearts

1716. then they will be gone in

1717. an instant and it may be

1718. the hardest thing in the

  1719. world to mend that

  1720. bridge that has been

  1721. destroyed over years of

  1722. harshness but there is

1723. hope even if you are in

  1724. that situation today thank

1725. god that even in our

1726. failures that he is the

  1727. god of the impossible

  1728. because it's about new

  1729. birth which is something

1730. that the lord does the

  1731. lord does in people's

1732. hearts so how then should

  1733. you parent do not

  1734. exasperate your children

1735. instead bring them up in

  1736. the training and

  1737. instruction of the lord

1738. you do it with the same

1739. love and grace that the

1740. lord has shown you as he

  1741. has brought you into

  1742. fellowship with jesus and

1743. with his church you are to

1744. to be a demonstration of

1745. the fruit of the spirit and

1746. that fruit that comes from

  1747. growing together with other

1748. believers in the church in

  1749. community

1750. teach your children by your

1751. words teach your children by

1752. your deeds what it means to

1753. be a follower of jesus and a

1754. faithful part of a church

  1755. community it's tender tender

  1756. training and instruction

1757. that's called to here and as

1758. your children begin to follow

1759. jesus help them to see that

1760. their sin goes right down deep

1761. into their hearts we want to

1762. correct the behavior and that

1763. is that is right to correct the

1764. behavior but as they grow show

1765. them the depth of their sin you

1766. see jesus has caused them if

1767. they are believers to be born

1768. anew and they can become more

1769. like jesus every day they can

1770. deal with the issue of sin in

1771. their hearts and god willing

1772. with her helpless parents and if

1773. your children don't follow jesus

1774. pray on your knees for them that

1775. the lord would save and keep them

1776. and if they continue not to follow

1777. through those early years i think

1778. we need to try and hold these

1779. verses and ensure that when they

  1780. hit 18 that they're not embittered

1781. they're not bitter towards us and

1782. bitter towards the lord but that

1783. they will keep honoring their

1784. mother and father because they've

1785. seen gentleness and they've seen

1786. sacrifice each each and every day

  1787. it's hard we can't change our

  1788. children that's ultimately the

1789. lord's work but but we can seek to

1790. raise them so that past 18 they we

1791. have a relationship with them that

  1792. they're not so hardened i'm conscious

1793. reading a section like this it kind

1794. of maybe portrays a particular ideal

1795. family you know mom dad children in

1796. the church isn't that wonderful and

1797. that's that's often not the case in

1798. church life i know for for many

1799. people here it's not that simple and

1800. not that straightforward and there are

1801. lots of things to think about and

  1802. applications and i can't cover them

1803. all this morning i wish i could but

1804. there's one that i do want to come

1805. back to um in relation to children

1806. what if my parents don't believe and

  1807. that's that situation i i found myself

1808. in growing up through the life of the

1809. church here and i know some people are

1810. in that situation say if my parents

1811. don't believe do i still need to obey

1812. what are the limits of that obedience

1813. if they tell me that i can't be

1814. baptized as a believer they say you

1815. can't go to church even can i disobey in

1816. those cases well i think obedience to

1817. parents even those that don't believe

1818. even if your parents don't believe that

1819. your obedience as a believer it is the

1820. right thing to do the end of verse one as

1821. we said for this is right it almost in a

1822. sense apart from our identity in christ

1823. it's just true in in the whole of

1824. creation so it should be the rare

  1825. exception to disobey that's what i'm

1826. ultimately saying it should be a rare

1827. thing of course jesus taught us didn't

1828. he that our our ultimate loyalty is to

1829. the kingdom of god and that there are

1830. times where we'll be in conflict with

1831. family and parents so if your parents

1832. forbid you from following jesus in your

1833. heart and confessing jesus christ as

1834. lord and savior then yes yes at that

1835. point you you must disobey and you must

1836. proclaim that you follow jesus but

1837. baptism can wait until you're 18 being

1838. able to take part fully in the life of

1839. the church it might just need to take

1840. more time to develop over a longer

1841. period the lord knows your heart keep

1842. your respect for your parents and show

1843. them obedience and honesty as a forgiven

1844. sinner the lord sees your struggle the

1845. lord sees your struggle and more than

1846. that he knew jesus knew what it was like

1847. to be on this earth and at different

1848. times to be estranged from his own mother

1849. and brothers and family jesus knew that he

1850. experienced that that tension between the

1851. call of god and the kingdom of god and

1852. the call of family and the kind of

1853. pressures he was under in his society so

1854. so so the lord knows the lord sees but i

1855. believe the lord still calls us to obey

1856. with those rare and few exceptions so just

1857. to conclude let us let us all welcome our

1858. believing children as part of the church let

1859. us together disciple and encourage them as

1860. people who who know the lord and love the

1861. lord and for those children sit among us

1862. that haven't yet expressed faith to see

1863. them as people in need to see and hear the

1864. gospel each and every week so that one day

1865. those children as well may join us together

1866. in the great multitude of forgiven sinners that

1867. will worship the lamb let's pray for that right

1868. now our father we we we we confess that our

1869. our view of of you our view of the bible is

1870. so low at times our vision is so dull and

1871. lord jesus i just want to thank you for the

1872. church and for the greatness of the church

1873. your your great plan of redemption through your

1874. body the church that there's no one word that

1875. can describe it we we thank you that that we can

1876. grow together as believers into the body of christ and be

1877. this new people of god and i thank you that our

1878. children the children in the church are as equal members of

1879. that as as anyone else and father i pray for my own

1880. children as they grow as they express faith in

1881. different ways that i would continue i pray for

1882. for for the other children in the church for the parents here who have children

1883. who are maybe older who have who have left that that don't follow christ now

1884. lord jesus in your great mercy grant them repentance and salvation that they

1885. would they would bow their knee

1886. and that they would remember the gospel that they have heard through many years

1887. and come back and confess and come to you and father there is no greater desire for a parent and then to want

1888. to stand with their children on that day before you as brothers and sisters in the lord

1889. worshiping together and lord in your mercy be gracious make that real in the life of this church for the

1890. children who are with us now and for those that have that have gone on lord that that don't follow you today

1891. lord be merciful for your glory in jesus name amen amen
