  1. 1,225, that's 1,225. It's the first book of 1 John chapter 1. So 1,225.

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  2. That's 1 John chapter 1. And we're going to read verses 1 to 7.

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  3. 1 John chapter 1, verse 1.

    1 John 1:1

  4. To be able to share fellowship with the Lord's people here is always a privilege.

  5. And I want us to look together at 1 John, and particularly the first few verses of that

  6. particular letter that John wrote.

  7. I wish I was there. I wonder if you can look back perhaps to an event in history,

  8. and you say, well, if only I could have been there. I would just love to have witnessed it

  9. with my very own eyes. If only I could have seen, or maybe it's a sporting event.

  10. And you can look back and say, wow, what an atmosphere. What a kind of situation this must

  11. have been in. We thought all was lost, and then suddenly everything was changed, and our team

  12. won. I wish I was there. I suppose we all have moments like that, when we can look back and say,

  13. I wish I was there. And somehow we feel because we weren't there, we've missed out.

  14. Yes, we've read about it. Yes, we've read about it. We've heard about it. But because we weren't there,

  15. we've missed out. And I suppose there are people in the world today, and we may be among them,

  16. who say that they've missed out because they weren't present when Jesus walked here upon earth.

  17. It must have been wonderful to be where Jesus was. People who visited the Holy Land, they look around

  18. and they see various places, and they try to imagine what it would have been like in Jesus' day.

  19. To be among the shepherds who went to the stable. To gaze at the infant Jesus, to look at Mary and Joseph,

  20. and to worship. It must have been great to be there. To be there when the wise men visited,

  21. bringing their gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh. And we may say, well, I wish I'd been there.

  22. It must have been quite a spectacle. Or, I wish I'd been there when Jesus preached his sermon on the mount.

  23. I'd have loved to have been there when he spoke about the prodigal son, and how the lost son came back,

  24. and how the father embraced him. I wish I'd have been there to hear from the lips of Jesus these

  25. wonderful stories. I wish I'd have been there when he was crucified.

  26. And then, a few days later, I wish I'd been there to look into the empty grave.

  27. I wish I'd been there to see the risen Christ.

  28. I wish I'd been there.

  29. And you may feel, well, you've missed out because you weren't there.

  30. And yet I want to remind you of words that were spoken to Thomas all those years ago.

  31. Thomas, because you have seen, you have believed.

  32. Blessed are those who have not seen, yet believe.

  33. Believe.

  34. Now, John wants to show us that we haven't missed out because we weren't there.

  35. John writes, and he tells us that he's seen Jesus, he's touched Jesus,

  36. that he's heard Jesus with his very own ears.

  37. And he wants us to enjoy fellowship as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  38. as though we had been there.

  39. You see, John is the last surviving member of the apostles.

  40. He didn't know what it was like to be actually present during Jesus' ministry.

  41. But he was passing from the scene of time.

  42. And he wants the believers to know that they can have the truth.

  43. And knowing that truth, no matter what age they might find themselves in,

  44. to know Jesus and to walk with Jesus by faith

  45. was to have life that was abundant and everlasting.

  46. Somebody has said he wrote his gospel,

  47. that men might have eternal life.

  48. And he writes his epistle,

  49. that they might know beyond a shadow of doubt

  50. that they had that eternal life.

  51. So John writes his epistle.

  52. And he needed to write it.

  53. He was writing to people that hadn't been present.

  54. He is getting towards the end of his life.

  55. And as he writes to these people who weren't there,

  56. there were others who were attacking them.

  57. There were a group of people called the Gnostics.

  58. And they thought that they had an understanding of the truth,

  59. as others didn't have.

  60. They were attacking the ordinary,

  61. in inverted commas, believers,

  62. who they considered lesser mortals than themselves.

  63. They had arrived at true knowledge.

  64. But their teaching was false.

  65. They didn't have a right understanding of who Jesus was.

  66. But John is determined to show them the real Jesus,

  67. the authentic Jesus.

  68. And that knowing this Jesus was to have eternal life.

  69. John says,

  70. in effect,

  71. you haven't missed out.

  72. And so as we look at these verses together,

  73. we have to notice that John introduces to us

  74. the historical Jesus.

  75. See what he says in chapter 1 and verse 1 of his epistle.

  76. He says,

  77. that which was from the beginning.

  78. It's a similar start, isn't it,

  79. to John's Gospel.

  80. In the beginning was the Word,

  81. and the Word was with God,

  82. and the Word was God.

  83. John is introducing us to the central person,

  84. the central character of the Gospel,

  85. even our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  86. And he doesn't want anybody to be left in doubt

  87. as to who this person is.

  88. And so he shows us

  89. that the one who came into the world,

  90. this historic Jesus,

  91. is none other than the one

  92. who was eternally God,

  93. who became man.

  94. Before the world existed,

  95. the Lord Jesus was.

  96. But the Word became flesh

  97. and dwelt among us,

  98. John says in his Gospel.

  99. And John and others had come to believe

  100. that Jesus was indeed

  101. God made flesh.

  102. Right at the beginning

  103. of Jesus' ministry,

  104. John heard Jesus,

  105. he saw Jesus,

  106. and he touched Jesus.

  107. He had a first-hand knowledge

  108. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  109. He was an eyewitness.

  110. But he was an eyewitness

  111. to the fact

  112. that this one who was born

  113. was none other

  114. than God manifest in flesh.

  115. The God-man.

  116. And so when John testifies,

  117. he testifies of him

  118. who was from the beginning.

  119. Him who was from eternity.

  120. But man

  121. who could be reached

  122. and touched

  123. and heard

  124. and seen

  125. with the physical eye.

  126. Earlier on,

  127. John had been arrested

  128. along with Peter.

  129. And in Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  130. and verse 20,

  131. we find him answering

  132. those who said to him,

  133. John, be quiet.

  134. Peter, be quiet.

  135. Don't speak anymore

  136. about this Jesus

  137. and the resurrection.

  138. And they had replied,

  139. we cannot help speaking

  140. about what we have seen

  141. and heard.

  142. How could John be silent?

  143. And he continues

  144. to the end of his days

  145. telling us

  146. of this real, authentic,

  147. historical Jesus.

  148. His message was the same,

  149. of course,

  150. as the Apostle Paul

  151. who writes in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  152. chapter 4 and verse 6.

  153. For God,

  154. who said,

  155. let light shine in darkness,

  156. made his light shine

  157. in the hearts

  158. to give us the light

  159. of the knowledge

  160. of the glory of God

  161. in the face

  162. of Jesus Christ.

  163. That's a historical Jesus.

  164. The glory of God

  165. is seen in the face

  166. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  167. And we ought to be lost

  168. in wonder,

  169. love,

  170. and praise

  171. as we see

  172. this historic Jesus

  173. by faith.

  174. The God-Man.

  175. But John saw

  176. in this historic Jesus

  177. the God-Man

  178. who gives life.

  179. He tells us

  180. in verse 2,

  181. the life appeared

  182. and we have seen it

  183. and testify to it

  184. and we proclaim to you

  185. the eternal life

  186. which was with the Father

  187. and has appeared

  188. to us.

  189. John saw

  190. in Jesus

  191. the God-Man,

  192. but he also saw him

  193. as the one

  194. in whom was life.

  195. He was the very

  196. word of life.

  197. He was the

  198. eternal life.

  199. Eternal life

  200. was to be found

  201. in him.

  202. Later on

  203. in his epistle

  204. chapter 5

  205. and verse 20

  206. he says

  207. he is the

  208. true God

  209. and eternal life.

  210. Life was found

  211. in a person.

  212. Eternal life

  213. was found

  214. in this Jesus.

  215. The one

  216. who was truly God

  217. who became

  218. man.

  219. It's the epistle

  220. isn't it

  221. of eternal life.

  222. And every believer

  223. no matter what age

  224. they find themselves

  225. in

  226. can have

  227. the very life

  228. of the Lord

  229. Jesus Christ

  230. in their life.

  231. Christ

  232. in the believer

  233. and the believer

  234. in Christ.

  235. He is the vine.

  236. we are the branches

  237. and in him

  238. we bear fruit

  239. because his life

  240. is in us

  241. abundant

  242. everlasting

  243. eternal life.

  244. The one

  245. who is eternal

  246. the one

  247. who conquered

  248. death

  249. and the grave

  250. as man

  251. is the only one

  252. who can give us

  253. this eternal life.

  254. life

  255. that life

  256. is in the person

  257. of the Lord

  258. Jesus Christ.

  259. See what he says

  260. in 1 John 3

  261. and verse 9

  262. No one

  263. who is born

  264. of God

  265. will continue

  266. in sin

  267. because God's

  268. seed

  269. remains

  270. in him.

  271. He cannot

  272. go on sinning

  273. because he has been

  274. born

  275. of God.

  276. The very life

  277. of God

  278. in the soul

  279. of man.

  280. So the historic

  281. Jesus for John

  282. is not only

  283. the God-man

  284. but the God-man

  285. who gives

  286. this eternal

  287. abundant life.

  288. And that abundant

  289. life

  290. that eternal life

  291. cannot ever

  292. be taken away.

  293. His seed

  294. remains

  295. in you

  296. and remains

  297. in me.

  298. But John

  299. goes further.

  300. He not only

  301. introduces us

  302. to the historic

  303. Jesus as the

  304. God-man

  305. and the one

  306. who gives

  307. life

  308. but he actually

  309. tells us

  310. that we can

  311. enjoy fellowship

  312. with him.

  313. Verse 3

  314. We proclaim

  315. to you

  316. what we have

  317. seen and heard

  318. so that you

  319. also may have

  320. fellowship

  321. with us

  322. and our

  323. fellowship

  324. is with the

  325. Father

  326. and with his

  327. Son

  328. Jesus Christ.

  329. Notice the

  330. train of thought

  331. that he has

  332. here.

  333. This chain

  334. that exists.

  335. We have

  336. fellowship

  337. with John.

  338. We have

  339. fellowship

  340. with John

  341. but also

  342. with the

  343. Lord Jesus

  344. Christ

  345. and with

  346. the Father.

  347. We proclaim

  348. to you

  349. what we have

  350. seen and heard

  351. so that you

  352. may have

  353. fellowship

  354. with us

  355. and with

  356. the Lord

  357. Jesus Christ

  358. and with

  359. the Father.

  360. A wonderful

  361. fellowship

  362. exists

  363. amongst

  364. believers

  365. of all

  366. ages.

  367. We may

  368. be comparatively

  369. small as far

  370. as numbers

  371. go

  372. but we are

  373. part of a

  374. number that

  375. is being

  376. made up

  377. which we

  378. will be

  379. unable

  380. to count.

  381. A number

  382. that no

  383. man can

  384. number

  385. we are

  386. told

  387. in

  388. Revelation.

  389. And we

  390. will be

  391. made up

  392. called

  393. from all

  394. lands

  395. and all

  396. countries

  397. and all

  398. kinds

  399. of

  400. backgrounds

  401. brought

  402. into

  403. fellowship

  404. with the

  405. Lord

  406. Jesus

  407. Christ.

  408. Brought

  409. into

  410. fellowship

  411. with the

  412. Father

  413. through

  414. the

  415. Lord

  416. Jesus

  417. Christ.

  418. Enjoying

  419. that

  420. oneness

  421. and that

  422. unity

  423. in

  424. him.

  425. And the

  426. wonderful

  427. thing is

  428. that though

  429. we may

  430. belong to

  431. clubs

  432. etc.

  433. in this

  434. life

  435. and the

  436. day will

  437. come when

  438. we will

  439. be removed

  440. because of

  441. death or

  442. moving away

  443. to another

  444. area

  445. so that

  446. we are

  447. no longer

  448. a member

  449. of this

  450. football club

  451. or this

  452. particular

  453. organization.

  454. our names

  455. will be

  456. removed

  457. but our

  458. names will

  459. not be

  460. removed

  461. from the

  462. church of

  463. the Lord

  464. Jesus

  465. Christ.

  466. There is

  467. a hymn

  468. that says

  469. that we

  470. enjoy

  471. mystic

  472. sweet

  473. communion

  474. with those

  475. whose rest

  476. is one.

  477. The church

  478. is one

  479. and that

  480. fellowship

  481. that we

  482. enjoy

  483. so that I

  484. can have

  485. fellowship

  486. if you like

  487. with John

  488. because his

  489. fellowship is

  490. with the

  491. Father and

  492. with his

  493. son the

  494. Lord Jesus

  495. Christ.

  496. I can

  497. enjoy

  498. fellowship

  499. with the

  500. things that

  501. he believed

  502. and that I

  503. can believe

  504. so that I

  505. have not

  506. missed out

  507. and neither

  508. have you

  509. missed out.

  510. Jesus

  511. introduces

  512. this

  513. historic

  514. Jesus

  515. to us.

  516. So it

  517. asks the

  518. question.

  519. Do you

  520. know the

  521. one

  522. who is

  523. with the

  524. Father?

  525. One

  526. who is

  527. eternal

  528. with the

  529. Father?

  530. Do you

  531. enjoy

  532. the

  533. wonderful

  534. gift

  535. of eternal

  536. life

  537. in the

  538. one who

  539. was made

  540. flesh

  541. and dwelt

  542. among us?

  543. Do you

  544. enjoy

  545. the

  546. fellowship

  547. of the

  548. Lord's

  549. people?

  550. Do you

  551. enjoy

  552. fellowship

  553. with the

  554. Father

  555. and with

  556. the

  557. Son?

  558. Or are

  559. you still

  560. saying,

  561. if only

  562. I had

  563. been

  564. there,

  565. I too

  566. would

  567. believe?

  568. My friends,

  569. we don't

  570. have to be

  571. there to

  572. believe

  573. and to

  574. enjoy

  575. fellowship.

  576. So John

  577. introduces

  578. a historic

  579. Jesus.

  580. But John

  581. also

  582. introduces us

  583. to the

  584. one he

  585. knew

  586. intimately.

  587. This

  588. wasn't a

  589. far-off

  590. Jesus.

  591. It was

  592. one he

  593. had an

  594. association

  595. with.

  596. And in the

  597. latter part

  598. of verse

  599. one, he

  600. brings it

  601. home to

  602. us when

  603. he says,

  604. which we

  605. have heard,

  606. that which

  607. was from

  608. the beginning,

  609. which we

  610. have heard,

  611. which we

  612. have seen

  613. with our

  614. eyes,

  615. which we

  616. have looked

  617. at,

  618. and our

  619. hands have

  620. touched.

  621. John

  622. was

  623. there.

  624. We hear

  625. that John

  626. heard

  627. Jesus.

  628. And of

  629. course there

  630. was that

  631. physical

  632. hearing.

  633. There were

  634. times when

  635. Jesus took

  636. his disciples

  637. apart and

  638. taught to

  639. them personally.

  640. He addressed

  641. them in

  642. an intimate

  643. way.

  644. John

  645. enjoyed the

  646. blessing of

  647. hearing the

  648. very words

  649. of Jesus

  650. with the

  651. physical ear.

  652. He'd heard

  653. Jesus when

  654. he was there

  655. by the lake

  656. of Galilee.

  657. Follow me.

  658. And he'd

  659. left his

  660. nets and

  661. followed Jesus

  662. that he

  663. might be a

  664. fisher of

  665. men.

  666. He'd

  667. heard Jesus

  668. speaking to

  669. Nicodemus

  670. saying,

  671. you must

  672. be born

  673. again,

  674. Nicodemus,

  675. if you

  676. would have

  677. life.

  678. He heard

  679. Jesus

  680. addressing

  681. the multitude,

  682. come to

  683. me,

  684. all you

  685. who are

  686. weary

  687. and burdened.

  688. He heard

  689. Jesus

  690. saying,

  691. suffer

  692. little

  693. children

  694. to come

  695. unto me

  696. and forbid

  697. them not

  698. for of

  699. such is

  700. the kingdom

  701. of heaven.

  702. he was

  703. actually

  704. present

  705. when Jesus

  706. went to

  707. the home

  708. of Jairus

  709. and reached

  710. out and

  711. touched that

  712. little girl

  713. and said,

  714. little maid,

  715. arise,

  716. little maid,

  717. get up.

  718. He was

  719. present.

  720. He heard

  721. Jesus

  722. physically.

  723. He heard

  724. Jesus speak

  725. about the

  726. parable of

  727. the sower.

  728. He listened

  729. to Jesus'

  730. instruction

  731. as the

  732. 5,000

  733. were miraculously

  734. fed.

  735. He heard

  736. Jesus say,

  737. I am

  738. the door.

  739. I am

  740. the good

  741. shepherd.

  742. I am

  743. the resurrection

  744. and the

  745. life.

  746. He heard

  747. those things

  748. physically.

  749. John says,

  750. I'm declaring

  751. to you

  752. someone I

  753. actually

  754. heard.

  755. but it

  756. was more

  757. than just

  758. a physical

  759. hearing for

  760. John.

  761. And that's

  762. what I want

  763. to bring

  764. home to

  765. you this

  766. morning.

  767. There

  768. wasn't

  769. just the

  770. physical

  771. hearing,

  772. was there?

  773. There was

  774. that spiritual

  775. hearing.

  776. The words

  777. of Jesus

  778. meant

  779. something

  780. to John.

  781. They were

  782. words that

  783. affected

  784. his heart.

  785. They had

  786. dropped,

  787. if you

  788. like,

  789. the vital

  790. length.

  791. From the

  792. head

  793. to the

  794. heart.

  795. And John

  796. believed

  797. from the

  798. heart.

  799. His ears

  800. were open.

  801. He had

  802. been

  803. effectually

  804. called,

  805. if you

  806. like,

  807. from his

  808. nets,

  809. follow me.

  810. And he

  811. hadn't just

  812. heard physically,

  813. he heard

  814. spiritually.

  815. And he

  816. left all

  817. and followed

  818. the Lord

  819. Jesus.

  820. Jesus.

  821. But others

  822. heard Jesus

  823. and it

  824. made

  825. absolutely

  826. no

  827. difference

  828. at all.

  829. And we

  830. can easily

  831. illustrate that.

  832. There's a

  833. passage in

  834. John chapter

    John 6 chapter mention

  835. 6.

  836. And in

  837. John chapter

    John 6 chapter mention

  838. 6,

  839. Jesus is at

  840. the height

  841. of his

  842. popularity.

  843. Thousands

  844. are flocking

  845. to hear

  846. him.

  847. And in

  848. John 6

  849. and verse

  850. 35,

  851. he announces

  852. to those

  853. crowds,

  854. I am

  855. the bread

  856. of life.

  857. And if

  858. you come

  859. to me,

  860. you will

  861. never go

  862. hungry,

  863. and you

  864. will never

  865. be thirsty.

  866. Of course,

  867. Jesus is

  868. speaking in

  869. spiritual

  870. terms.

  871. Because he

  872. goes on

  873. in that

  874. same passage

  875. to say,

  876. this bread

  877. that I'm

  878. talking about

  879. is my

  880. flesh,

  881. which I

  882. will give

  883. for the

  884. life of

  885. the world.

  886. For my

  887. flesh is

  888. real food,

  889. and my

  890. blood is

  891. real drink.

  892. Whoever

  893. eats my

  894. flesh and

  895. drinks my

  896. blood remains

  897. in me,

  898. and I

  899. in him.

  900. Now here's

  901. this vast

  902. crowd.

  903. They're hearing

  904. Jesus physically.

  905. Among them

  906. are the

  907. 5,000,

  908. no doubt,

  909. who had

  910. enjoyed a

  911. feast that

  912. Jesus had

  913. miraculously

  914. provided.

  915. But they

  916. didn't

  917. understand

  918. what Jesus

  919. was saying.

  920. How can

  921. this man,

  922. verse 52,

  923. give us

  924. his flesh

  925. to eat?

  926. Of course,

  927. Jesus was

  928. speaking of

  929. his death

  930. at Calvary.

  931. He was

  932. saying,

  933. in effect,

  934. if you

  935. want to

  936. have life,

  937. you have

  938. to come

  939. to me.

  940. For if

  941. you eat

  942. the bread

  943. that I

  944. offer you,

  945. you will

  946. live forever.

  947. The words

  948. that I

  949. am speaking

  950. to you,

  951. they are

  952. spirit,

  953. and they

  954. are life.

  955. They

  956. heard.

  957. And then

  958. in verse

  959. 66 of

  960. John chapter

    John 6 chapter mention

  961. 6,

  962. we get

  963. these words,

  964. from that

  965. time,

  966. many of

  967. his disciples

  968. turned back

  969. and no

  970. longer

  971. followed

  972. him.

  973. They

  974. heard

  975. physically,

  976. but they

  977. did not

  978. hear

  979. spiritually.

  980. It

  981. made no

  982. difference.

  983. They

  984. heard,

  985. but

  986. rejected.

  987. They

  988. were

  989. present,

  990. but it

  991. made no

  992. difference.

  993. What about

  994. John?

  995. Well,

  996. when many

  997. turned away,

  998. Jesus

  999. turned to

  1000. the

  1001. apostles.

  1002. apostles.

  1003. And he

  1004. says to

  1005. them,

  1006. in John

  1007. 6 and

  1008. verse 67,

  1009. you do

  1010. not want

  1011. to leave

  1012. too,

  1013. do you?

  1014. And

  1015. Peter,

  1016. speaking for

  1017. the others,

  1018. including

  1019. John,

  1020. says,

  1021. Lord,

  1022. to whom

  1023. shall we

  1024. go?

  1025. You

  1026. have the

  1027. words of

  1028. eternal

  1029. life.

  1030. we

  1031. believe

  1032. and know

  1033. that you

  1034. are the

  1035. Holy One

  1036. of God.

  1037. What was

  1038. the difference

  1039. then between

  1040. John's

  1041. hearing

  1042. and the

  1043. crowds?

  1044. Well,

  1045. there was

  1046. the hearing

  1047. by faith.

  1048. There was

  1049. the spiritual

  1050. hearing.

  1051. Their ears

  1052. had been

  1053. unstopped

  1054. to hear

  1055. the message

  1056. of salvation,

  1057. to see

  1058. that Jesus

  1059. Christ was

  1060. the bread

  1061. of life

  1062. and that

  1063. in his

  1064. death

  1065. was life

  1066. for them.

  1067. My

  1068. friends,

  1069. how are

  1070. you listening

  1071. to the

  1072. Lord Jesus?

  1073. If only

  1074. I had been

  1075. there,

  1076. you say,

  1077. but people

  1078. were there

  1079. and it

  1080. made no

  1081. difference,

  1082. but we

  1083. today can

  1084. hear him

  1085. by faith

  1086. and take

  1087. hold of

  1088. him

  1089. and know

  1090. this

  1091. historic

  1092. Jesus

  1093. as our

  1094. Lord

  1095. and Savior.

  1096. The

  1097. spiritual

  1098. hearing

  1099. so that

  1100. you might

  1101. say today

  1102. in 2015,

  1103. I have

  1104. hurt.

  1105. But John

  1106. goes on

  1107. and says

  1108. he actually

  1109. saw

  1110. Jesus.

  1111. You think

  1112. you put this

  1113. first,

  1114. before the

  1115. hearing,

  1116. but it

  1117. shows how

  1118. important

  1119. the word

  1120. of the

  1121. Lord is.

  1122. John,

  1123. however,

  1124. saw Jesus.

  1125. Now we

  1126. don't have

  1127. a physical

  1128. description

  1129. of Jesus.

  1130. He is

  1131. described

  1132. in Isaiah

  1133. 53 and

  1134. verse 2.

  1135. He had

  1136. no beauty

  1137. or majesty

  1138. to attract

  1139. us to

  1140. him.

  1141. Nothing in

  1142. his appearance

  1143. that we

  1144. should desire

  1145. him.

  1146. So I

  1147. would suggest

  1148. if Jesus

  1149. walked through

  1150. Karageline

  1151. today,

  1152. it wouldn't

  1153. mean that

  1154. people

  1155. automatically

  1156. believed

  1157. in him.

  1158. It just

  1159. wouldn't

  1160. happen,

  1161. no more

  1162. than it

  1163. did in

  1164. the days

  1165. when Jesus

  1166. walked here

  1167. upon earth.

  1168. They might

  1169. see,

  1170. but not

  1171. believe.

  1172. And again,

  1173. there is the

  1174. physical

  1175. seeing which

  1176. is different

  1177. to the

  1178. spiritual

  1179. seeing.

  1180. And again,

  1181. we can

  1182. illustrate it

  1183. from John's

  1184. own gospel.

  1185. In John

    John 9 chapter mention

  1186. chapter 9,

  1187. we have a

  1188. blind man.

  1189. And Jesus

  1190. puts clay

  1191. on this

  1192. man's eyes.

  1193. And after

  1194. washing in

  1195. the pool

  1196. of Siloam,

  1197. this man

  1198. is able

  1199. to see.

  1200. Physically,

  1201. he had

  1202. sight.

  1203. He could

  1204. look up

  1205. at the

  1206. sky and

  1207. the trees

  1208. and the

  1209. flowers,

  1210. and he

  1211. could look

  1212. at people.

  1213. Who has

  1214. done this

  1215. miracle in

  1216. his life?

  1217. Well,

  1218. he recognizes

  1219. that it

  1220. must have

  1221. been a

  1222. prophet who

  1223. had opened

  1224. his eyes.

  1225. But he

  1226. needs to

  1227. see something

  1228. more.

  1229. Later on,

  1230. he's brought

  1231. into touch

  1232. with the

  1233. Lord Jesus.

  1234. He looks

  1235. upon

  1236. Jesus.

  1237. And Jesus

  1238. says to

  1239. him in

  1240. John 9

  1241. and verse

  1242. 35,

  1243. Do you

  1244. believe in

  1245. the Son

  1246. of Man?

  1247. Who is

  1248. this man?

  1249. Well,

  1250. Jesus

  1251. identifies

  1252. himself as

  1253. that man.

  1254. He

  1255. identifies

  1256. himself as

  1257. the Messiah.

  1258. And another

  1259. miracle takes

  1260. place.

  1261. For his

  1262. spiritual eyes

  1263. are opened.

  1264. And we

  1265. read in

  1266. verse 38

  1267. of John 9,

  1268. Lord,

  1269. he says,

  1270. I believe.

  1271. And he

  1272. worshipped

  1273. him.

  1274. He saw

  1275. with the

  1276. physical eye,

  1277. but he

  1278. saw with

  1279. the spiritual

  1280. eye.

  1281. His

  1282. physical

  1283. eyes were

  1284. opened

  1285. opened,

  1286. that he

  1287. might see

  1288. spiritually

  1289. who

  1290. Jesus

  1291. was.

  1292. Of course,

  1293. there were

  1294. others present

  1295. that day,

  1296. the Pharisees

  1297. among them,

  1298. and we're

  1299. told that they

  1300. remained

  1301. spiritually

  1302. blind.

  1303. These men

  1304. thought they

  1305. saw.

  1306. They were

  1307. Moses'

  1308. disciples.

  1309. They were the

  1310. religious

  1311. authorities.

  1312. eyes,

  1313. but they

  1314. didn't see

  1315. Jesus

  1316. as the

  1317. Messiah.

  1318. They didn't

  1319. see him

  1320. as God

  1321. made flesh.

  1322. They were

  1323. blind to

  1324. eternal

  1325. things,

  1326. blind to the

  1327. fact that

  1328. God had

  1329. been made

  1330. flesh and

  1331. was living

  1332. among them.

  1333. And it

  1334. was a

  1335. terrible

  1336. blindness

  1337. not to

  1338. see Jesus.

  1339. Jesus.

  1340. And there

  1341. may be

  1342. somebody here

  1343. this morning

  1344. who says,

  1345. if only I

  1346. had seen,

  1347. I would

  1348. believe.

  1349. Would you?

  1350. I don't

  1351. know.

  1352. But you

  1353. weren't

  1354. living then.

  1355. But you

  1356. can believe

  1357. today.

  1358. You can

  1359. believe by

  1360. reaching out

  1361. to him.

  1362. and seeing

  1363. him as

  1364. he's revealed

  1365. himself in

  1366. scripture.

  1367. You can

  1368. know him

  1369. by the

  1370. spirit working

  1371. in your

  1372. life,

  1373. showing you

  1374. him.

  1375. We spoke

  1376. of Thomas

  1377. earlier on.

  1378. If I

  1379. can only

  1380. see, he

  1381. says,

  1382. the nail

  1383. prints,

  1384. and put

  1385. my finger

  1386. into those

  1387. nail prints,

  1388. and put

  1389. my fist

  1390. into his

  1391. side,

  1392. then I

  1393. would

  1394. believe.

  1395. And then

  1396. Jesus is

  1397. present.

  1398. Thomas,

  1399. because you

  1400. have seen,

  1401. you believe,

  1402. blessed,

  1403. happy are

  1404. those who

  1405. have not

  1406. seen,

  1407. yet believe.

  1408. So have

  1409. you seen

  1410. Jesus?

  1411. Have your

  1412. eyes been

  1413. opened by

  1414. the Spirit

  1415. of God?

  1416. Have you

  1417. a testimony?

  1418. John had

  1419. a testimony.

  1420. Remember,

  1421. how he

  1422. gone to

  1423. the

  1424. empty

  1425. tomb?

  1426. And he

  1427. looked in,

  1428. and we

  1429. have his

  1430. testimony.

  1431. He saw

  1432. the empty

  1433. tomb.

  1434. And the

  1435. Bible says,

  1436. he saw

  1437. and

  1438. believed.

  1439. Have you

  1440. believed?

  1441. And the

  1442. final thing

  1443. that John

  1444. tells us

  1445. here,

  1446. is that he

  1447. not only

  1448. heard Jesus,

  1449. he not only

  1450. saw Jesus,

  1451. but he

  1452. had touched

  1453. Jesus.

  1454. Physically,

  1455. John had

  1456. actually leaned

  1457. against Jesus

  1458. at the

  1459. Last Supper.

  1460. This

  1461. apostle had

  1462. had physical

  1463. contact with

  1464. Jesus.

  1465. During the

  1466. three years

  1467. he had been

  1468. with Jesus,

  1469. he had

  1470. listened,

  1471. he had

  1472. seen,

  1473. he had

  1474. touched.

  1475. touched.

  1476. Jesus,

  1477. we know,

  1478. was a

  1479. tactile

  1480. person.

  1481. He often

  1482. reached out

  1483. and touched

  1484. those who

  1485. would be

  1486. regarded as

  1487. the

  1488. untouchables

  1489. of the

  1490. day.

  1491. He reached

  1492. out to

  1493. people.

  1494. On many

  1495. occasions,

  1496. he'd taken

  1497. children to

  1498. himself.

  1499. He touched

  1500. them.

  1501. And John

  1502. had touched

  1503. Jesus.

  1504. And to

  1505. touch

  1506. Jesus

  1507. would have

  1508. made a

  1509. difference,

  1510. wouldn't it?

  1511. Well,

  1512. not always.

  1513. Again,

  1514. it's not too

  1515. difficult to

  1516. look at an

  1517. illustration of

  1518. this from the

  1519. Scriptures

  1520. themselves.

  1521. in Luke

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  1522. chapter 8

  1523. and verse

  1524. 40 onward,

  1525. we have a

  1526. story of a

  1527. sick woman.

  1528. She'd had a

  1529. hemorrhage for

  1530. 12 years.

  1531. She'd spent

  1532. all her

  1533. money and

  1534. various quacks

  1535. using the

  1536. remedies of

  1537. the day.

  1538. But rather

  1539. than get

  1540. better,

  1541. she got

  1542. worse.

  1543. And Jesus

  1544. was on

  1545. his way to

  1546. Jairus'

  1547. house.

  1548. He'd had

  1549. an emergency

  1550. call.

  1551. And as he

  1552. makes his

  1553. way there,

  1554. the crowds

  1555. were jostling

  1556. him.

  1557. But this

  1558. woman,

  1559. she reaches

  1560. out and

  1561. she touches

  1562. Jesus.

  1563. And Jesus

  1564. asked the

  1565. question,

  1566. who

  1567. touched

  1568. me?

  1569. And the

  1570. disciples

  1571. think it's

  1572. such a

  1573. ridiculous

  1574. question.

  1575. Peter said,

  1576. Master,

  1577. the people

  1578. are crowding

  1579. and pressing

  1580. against you.

  1581. Lots of

  1582. people are

  1583. touching me

  1584. and yet

  1585. you're asking,

  1586. who touched

  1587. me?

  1588. Well,

  1589. there was

  1590. someone in

  1591. the crowd

  1592. who was

  1593. reaching out

  1594. by faith.

  1595. It was

  1596. more than a

  1597. physical

  1598. touching.

  1599. It was a

  1600. spiritual

  1601. touching.

  1602. She reached

  1603. out.

  1604. And that

  1605. touch of

  1606. faith

  1607. made a

  1608. complete

  1609. difference

  1610. to her

  1611. life.

  1612. She was a

  1613. changed

  1614. person.

  1615. The

  1616. hemorrhage

  1617. ceased.

  1618. And the

  1619. Lord commends

  1620. her for

  1621. her faith.

  1622. Now,

  1623. we have

  1624. not heard,

  1625. we have

  1626. not seen,

  1627. and we

  1628. have not

  1629. touched

  1630. Jesus

  1631. physically.

  1632. But John

  1633. is saying

  1634. to us

  1635. very clearly,

  1636. I'm telling

  1637. you about

  1638. this Jesus

  1639. who I

  1640. have seen,

  1641. that I have

  1642. heard,

  1643. that I have

  1644. touched.

  1645. and I'm

  1646. writing this

  1647. so that you

  1648. might have

  1649. fellowship

  1650. with me

  1651. and with

  1652. the Lord

  1653. Jesus Christ

  1654. and with

  1655. the Father.

  1656. And we

  1657. write this,

  1658. he says,

  1659. in 1 John

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  1660. chapter 1

  1661. and verse 4,

  1662. to make

  1663. our or

  1664. your joy

  1665. complete.

  1666. So,

  1667. in conclusion,

  1668. let me say

  1669. this,

  1670. we have

  1671. not missed

  1672. out

  1673. because we

  1674. weren't

  1675. present.

  1676. Oh,

  1677. no.

  1678. We can

  1679. still hear,

  1680. we still

  1681. see,

  1682. and we

  1683. can still

  1684. touch by

  1685. faith.

  1686. Oh,

  1687. it requires

  1688. a miracle

  1689. of the grace

  1690. of God.

  1691. it requires

  1692. a miracle

  1693. of the

  1694. new birth

  1695. for our

  1696. deaf years

  1697. need to

  1698. be opened

  1699. and our

  1700. blind eyes

  1701. need to

  1702. be opened.

  1703. And we

  1704. need to be

  1705. given the

  1706. gift of

  1707. faith to

  1708. believe

  1709. and to

  1710. reach out

  1711. to him.

  1712. Seek it

  1713. with all

  1714. your

  1715. hearts.

  1716. grace.

  1717. But we

  1718. can receive

  1719. all this

  1720. wonderful

  1721. gift of

  1722. grace.

  1723. This

  1724. wonderful

  1725. gift of

  1726. eternal

  1727. life.

  1728. We can

  1729. receive the

  1730. miracle of

  1731. the assurance

  1732. of eternal

  1733. life through

  1734. faith.

  1735. So,

  1736. reach out

  1737. today while

  1738. you have

  1739. the opportunity.

  1740. And enjoy

  1741. fellowship with

  1742. the Father

  1743. and with

  1744. his Son,

  1745. the Lord

  1746. Jesus Christ.

  1747. Who John,

  1748. all those

  1749. years ago,

  1750. heard saying,

  1751. I am

  1752. the way,

  1753. the truth,

  1754. and the

  1755. life.

  1756. No man

  1757. comes to

  1758. the Father

  1759. but by

  1760. me.

  1761. So,

  1762. in him

  1763. is one

  1764. who is

  1765. the truth,

  1766. who is

  1767. the life,

  1768. who is

  1769. the way.

  1770. May we

  1771. know what

  1772. it is to

  1773. come to

  1774. him through

  1775. faith,

  1776. that we

  1777. might know

  1778. the Father

  1779. and enjoy

  1780. fellowship

  1781. forevermore.

  1782. Let's pray

  1783. together.

  1784. Father,

  1785. thank you

  1786. for the

  1787. historic

  1788. Jesus.

  1789. thank you

  1790. that we're

  1791. not following

  1792. a fairy

  1793. story.

  1794. We're

  1795. following

  1796. the truth.

  1797. We're

  1798. following

  1799. one who

  1800. said,

  1801. I am

  1802. the truth.

  1803. Thank you,

  1804. gracious and

  1805. eternal God,

  1806. that we have

  1807. in your

  1808. word these

  1809. wonderful

  1810. stories of

  1811. Jesus.

  1812. And these

  1813. are written

  1814. that we

  1815. might

  1816. believe.

  1817. these are

  1818. written that

  1819. we might

  1820. know

  1821. eternal

  1822. life.

  1823. So bless

  1824. us each

  1825. one.

  1826. And if

  1827. there is

  1828. one here

  1829. this morning

  1830. who has

  1831. not trusted

  1832. in the

  1833. Lord,

  1834. we pray

  1835. that their

  1836. ears will

  1837. be unstopped.

  1838. We pray

  1839. that their

  1840. eyes will

  1841. be opened.

  1842. We pray

  1843. that they

  1844. will be

  1845. given the

  1846. gift to

  1847. reach out

  1848. and take

  1849. hold of

  1850. Christ.

  1851. And this

  1852. we pray

  1853. in Jesus'

  1854. name.

  1855. Amen.

  1856. Amen.

  1857. Amen.

  1858. Amen.

  1859. Amen.

  1860. Amen.

  1861. Amen.

  1862. Amen.

  1863. Amen.

  1864. Amen.

  1865. Amen.

  1866. Amen.
