  1. And it's page 1147 in the Church Bible.

  2. So that's 1 Corinthians chapter 5 and it's verse 1 to 13, page 1147.

    1 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  3. It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans.

  4. A man has his father's wife, and you are proud.

  5. And shouldn't you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this?

  6. Even though I'm not physically present, I am with you in spirit, and I have already passed judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present.

  7. When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus, and I am with you in the spirit, and the power of the Lord Jesus is present,

  8. hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed, and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.

  9. Your boasting is not good.

  10. Don't you know that little yeast works through the whole batch of dough?

  11. Get rid of the old yeast, that you may be a new batch without yeast, as you really are.

  12. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

  13. Therefore, let us keep the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness,

  14. but with the bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.

  15. I have written to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people,

  16. not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters.

  17. In that case, you would have to leave this world.

  18. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother,

  19. but is sexually immoral, or greedy, an idolater, or a slanderer, a drunkard, or a swindler.

  20. With such a man do not even eat.

  21. What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church?

  22. Are you not to judge those inside?

  23. God will judge those outside.

  24. Expel the wicked man from among you.

  25. Thank you very much, Stephen.

  26. That's great to read.

  27. And as we listen, I'm sure you realise that it's not an easy one,

  28. what we're going to be looking at this morning.

  29. And I want to say that we can't cover everything as we go through a text like this,

  30. so there may be lots of questions that you have,

  31. and therefore I encourage you afterwards,

  32. and even Wednesdays, come along on Wednesdays,

  33. as we seek to maybe apply some of these things a little bit more.

  34. But certainly don't leave without asking or talking to me,

  35. if any questions arise.

  36. Before we do look at it, we're going to pray,

  37. and ask for God's help.

  38. Our Father God, we thank you for your word.

  39. We thank you for the Bible that we have,

  40. that we've just read in our own language,

  41. so that we can hear your voice to us today.

  42. And yet to hear, we need your help.

  43. And so we ask for your Holy Spirit,

  44. that we may have understanding with our minds,

  45. but that you would take your word and apply it to our hearts,

  46. impress it upon us,

  47. so that we become the Holy Church of God

  48. that you call us to be.

  49. Living in the light of your amazing forgiveness,

  50. knowing and experiencing the joy

  51. when we confess our sins,

  52. and living lives that reflect you.

  53. Please help us, we ask in Jesus' name.

  54. Amen.

  55. Amen.

  56. Well, according to the World Health Organization,

  57. we all need to watch our diet.

  58. You see, what we eat has a direct effect on our physical health.

  59. Red meat, we've been told, and processed meat,

  60. raise the risk of cancers.

  61. They also tell us that too much salt and too much sugar

  62. accelerate heart problems.

  63. It's so serious, we are told,

  64. that we need to take action now.

  65. We need to cut out what is unhealthy

  66. and get rid of the foods that cause health problems.

  67. You see, if we don't cut out and get rid of the unhealthy foods,

  68. we will become physically sick

  69. and we will die.

  70. It's shocking,

  71. but yet it is sound advice.

  72. Well, what about the church's health?

  73. Not the physical body,

  74. but the body of Christ.

  75. People like you and me

  76. who have trusted and followed the Lord Jesus.

  77. You see, sinful behaviour in the church

  78. has a direct effect on the spiritual health of the church.

  79. It's so serious, we are told,

  80. that we must take action now.

  81. Look what it says at the very end of verse 13.

  82. Expel the wicked man from among you.

  83. Cut out the sinful behaviour.

  84. Get rid of the sin in the church.

  85. You see, if we don't cut out

  86. and get rid of the sinful behaviour,

  87. the church will become spiritually sick

  88. and die.

  89. Remember,

  90. we are the holy church of God.

  91. Have a look back at chapter 1 and verse 2.

  92. This is how the whole letter starts out.

  93. This is the big theme, remember,

  94. of 1 Corinthians.

    1 Corinthians 1:2

  95. Chapter 1, verse 2.

  96. It says,

  97. To the church of God.

  98. So the church isn't belonging to any person.

  99. The church belongs to God.

  100. So to the church of God in Corinth,

  101. to those sanctified in Christ Jesus.

  102. Those who are sanctified

  103. simply means those who have been made holy.

  104. Through Jesus Christ,

  105. our sins have been forgiven.

  106. We have been made clean.

  107. We have been made pure

  108. so that we now belong to God

  109. and are acceptable to God.

  110. That is what the church is.

  111. But more than that,

  112. look at the rest of verse 2.

  113. It is the church of God

  114. in Corinth to those

  115. sanctified in Christ Jesus

  116. and called to be holy.

  117. In other words,

  118. in other words,

  119. we are now to live out

  120. a holy life in this world.

  121. Become what we are.

  122. Start living as God's pure

  123. and blameless and clean people

  124. in the world in which you live.

  125. So to be a holy church

  126. means dealing

  127. with unhealthy behaviour.

  128. It seems there are two sinful behaviours

  129. that need serious attention

  130. in the life of the church.

  131. The first one is this.

  132. Persistent

  133. and unrepentant sin.

  134. Let's go back to chapter 5

  135. and verse 1.

  136. It is actually reported

  137. that there is sexual immorality

  138. among you

  139. and of a kind

  140. that does not occur

  141. even among pagans

  142. or among unbelievers.

  143. A man

  144. has his father's wife.

  145. You see,

  146. the sex

  147. that God counts as pure

  148. is between one man

  149. and one woman

  150. always in the context

  151. of an exclusive

  152. married relationship.

  153. But for this man

  154. that we read about

  155. in chapter 5,

  156. it seems that

  157. while his dad is at work

  158. or perhaps his dad

  159. is out of town

  160. on business,

  161. he's sleeping

  162. with his father's wife.

  163. He's sleeping

  164. with his stepmother.

  165. Now this is

  166. doubly shocking.

  167. It's a shock

  168. because of the behaviour

  169. that's involved.

  170. Look what it says.

  171. It doesn't even occur

  172. among pagans.

  173. You wouldn't find

  174. this kind of behaviour

  175. amongst anybody.

  176. But worse than that,

  177. here's the deepest

  178. and biggest shock.

  179. Look at the beginning

  180. of verse 1.

  181. It's actually reported

  182. that there is sexual immorality

  183. among you.

  184. This is going on

  185. in the life

  186. of the church.

  187. So,

  188. someone who claims

  189. to be a Christian,

  190. somebody who's

  191. serving in the life

  192. of the church,

  193. is sleeping

  194. with his dad's wife,

  195. his stepmother.

  196. Now the problem is,

  197. this is persistent

  198. and unrepentant sin.

  199. Again,

  200. if we look closely

  201. at verse 1,

  202. the structure

  203. of the sentence

  204. implies that this is

  205. ongoing sin

  206. that has not been dealt with.

  207. He says,

  208. there is

  209. sexual immorality.

  210. A man

  211. has

  212. his father's wife.

  213. This is a regular

  214. pattern of behaviour

  215. and it seems

  216. he has become

  217. immune

  218. to the seriousness

  219. of his behaviour.

  220. He's become blind

  221. to the sin

  222. in his life

  223. and he's carrying

  224. on as if

  225. everything is normal.

  226. And that's what

  227. makes this sinful

  228. behaviour so serious.

  229. It's not that

  230. he has sinned,

  231. although that is

  232. serious.

  233. It's that he

  234. persists

  235. in his sin

  236. and remains

  237. unrepentant.

  238. You see,

  239. all of us,

  240. every single one

  241. of us,

  242. sin.

  243. We all fall

  244. and fail

  245. and sometimes

  246. sexually.

  247. But when the

  248. Christian,

  249. when the follower

  250. of Jesus

  251. does sin,

  252. we repent.

  253. We take

  254. ownership

  255. of our sin,

  256. we confess

  257. our sin

  258. and we do

  259. everything to make

  260. sure we don't

  261. continue in the

  262. same pattern

  263. of behaviour.

  264. We make

  265. ourselves

  266. accountable

  267. to the church,

  268. to one another.

  269. We look for

  270. support,

  271. we look for

  272. that care,

  273. we look for

  274. that help.

  275. The problem

  276. here,

  277. as we are

  278. reading in

  279. chapter 5,

  280. is it is

  281. persistent

  282. and unrepentant

  283. behaviour.

  284. But there's

  285. also another

  286. unhealthy behaviour

  287. in the life

  288. of the church.

  289. it is

  290. tolerated

  291. and ignored

  292. sin.

  293. Look at

  294. the end

  295. of verse 1.

  296. A man

  297. has his

  298. father's

  299. wife

  300. and you

  301. are proud.

  302. Shouldn't

  303. you rather

  304. have been

  305. filled with

  306. grief and

  307. have put

  308. out of

  309. your

  310. fellowship

  311. the man

  312. who did

  313. this?

  314. Do you

  315. see what's

  316. going on?

  317. The church

  318. has become

  319. tolerant

  320. of the man's

  321. behaviour,

  322. which is

  323. also sinful.

  324. Rather than

  325. deal with

  326. the sin

  327. that's going

  328. on and

  329. wrecking the

  330. church,

  331. they've

  332. ignored the

  333. sin.

  334. In verse 6

  335. we're told

  336. your boasting

  337. is not

  338. good.

  339. It's a big

  340. secret that

  341. everybody

  342. knows about.

  343. So this

  344. guy in the

  345. church,

  346. he turns up

  347. each Sunday,

  348. he's singing

  349. his hymns,

  350. he's taking

  351. part in

  352. communion,

  353. communion,

  354. and everybody

  355. knows what

  356. he's been

  357. up to the

  358. night before.

  359. The problem

  360. is nobody's

  361. saying anything.

  362. It's a

  363. secret,

  364. but we

  365. all know.

  366. They've

  367. become

  368. tolerant.

  369. Oh, we

  370. don't judge

  371. people in

  372. this church.

  373. Sure,

  374. aren't we

  375. all sinners?

  376. Oh, we

  377. must learn to

  378. accept people

  379. as they

  380. are.

  381. We can't

  382. all be

  383. perfect.

  384. They are

  385. ignoring the

  386. situation.

  387. Sure, it's

  388. his own

  389. life, as

  390. long as it

  391. doesn't

  392. affect me.

  393. Well, isn't

  394. he young?

  395. We all did

  396. silly things

  397. when we

  398. were his

  399. age.

  400. No, we

  401. cannot ever

  402. afford to

  403. be tolerant

  404. and ignorant

  405. of sin.

  406. It is far

  407. too serious

  408. a matter.

  409. the

  410. church has

  411. a

  412. responsibility

  413. and when

  414. I say

  415. the

  416. church,

  417. it is

  418. the

  419. believers,

  420. the

  421. family of

  422. God's

  423. people.

  424. Together,

  425. corporately,

  426. we have a

  427. responsibility

  428. to deal

  429. with

  430. persistent

  431. and

  432. unrepentant

  433. sin in

  434. the life

  435. of the

  436. church.

  437. So,

  438. that's the

  439. unhealthy

  440. behaviour.

  441. But what

  442. is healthy

  443. behaviour?

  444. You see,

  445. when someone

  446. in the

  447. church

  448. family

  449. continues

  450. in a

  451. pattern

  452. of

  453. sinful

  454. behaviour,

  455. the

  456. church

  457. must

  458. act.

  459. We

  460. cannot

  461. stand

  462. back.

  463. We

  464. must

  465. separate

  466. the

  467. sinner.

  468. Look

  469. what it

  470. says in

  471. verse 2.

  472. God

  473. is

  474. and

  475. you

  476. are

  477. proud.

  478. Shouldn't

  479. you

  480. rather have

  481. been

  482. filled

  483. with

  484. grief

  485. and

  486. put

  487. out

  488. of

  489. your

  490. fellowship

  491. the

  492. man

  493. who

  494. did

  495. this?

  496. But

  497. Johnny,

  498. aren't we

  499. all

  500. sinners?

  501. I mean,

  502. I've

  503. sinned

  504. multiple

  505. times

  506. this

  507. week.

  508. Does

  509. that

  510. mean

  511. I'm

  512. going

  513. to be

  514. put

  515. out

  516. of

  517. the

  518. fellowship

  519. too?

  520. Well,

  521. let me

  522. pause

  523. and also

  524. include

  525. myself

  526. in that.

  527. Yes,

  528. I have

  529. sinned

  530. in this

  531. past

  532. week.

  533. We

  534. all

  535. fall

  536. and

  537. fail.

  538. But

  539. this is

  540. not about

  541. our

  542. continued

  543. battle

  544. with our

  545. sinful

  546. nature

  547. where

  548. we

  549. seek

  550. in

  551. repentance

  552. and

  553. come

  554. back

  555. to

  556. God

  557. and

  558. look

  559. to

  560. Christ

  561. in

  562. faith.

  563. This

  564. is

  565. about

  566. someone

  567. who

  568. is

  569. rejecting

  570. the

  571. call

  572. to

  573. repent

  574. and

  575. refusing

  576. to

  577. deal

  578. with

  579. their

  580. sin.

  581. And

  582. let's

  583. be

  584. clear,

  585. it's

  586. not

  587. just

  588. the

  589. sex

  590. sin

  591. that's

  592. highlighted.

  593. Look

  594. at the

  595. end of

  596. verse

  597. 11.

  598. It's

  599. all

  600. kinds

  601. of

  602. persistent

  603. sin.

  604. Look

  605. what it

  606. says at

  607. the end

  608. of verse

  609. 11.

  610. The

  611. sexually

  612. immoral

  613. or

  614. greedy

  615. that is

  616. a

  617. Christian

  618. who has

  619. more than

  620. they need

  621. but never

  622. gives

  623. to those

  624. who are

  625. in need.

  626. It

  627. includes

  628. the

  629. idolater

  630. so that

  631. is a

  632. believer

  633. who replaces

  634. God with

  635. someone or

  636. something else

  637. and never

  638. changes.

  639. It

  640. includes

  641. the

  642. slanderer

  643. so a

  644. member of

  645. the church

  646. who continually

  647. gossips about

  648. people behind

  649. their backs

  650. and puts

  651. them down.

  652. sin.

  653. It

  654. also

  655. includes

  656. the

  657. drunkard

  658. a

  659. follower

  660. of

  661. Jesus

  662. who

  663. continually

  664. drinks

  665. too

  666. much.

  667. It

  668. also

  669. means

  670. the

  671. swindler

  672. so a

  673. worshipper

  674. of God

  675. who's

  676. always

  677. fiddling

  678. his taxes

  679. and trying

  680. to be

  681. dishonest.

  682. You see

  683. this is

  684. about

  685. persistent

  686. and

  687. unrepentant

  688. sin.

  689. This is

  690. not easy

  691. is it?

  692. Separating

  693. the sinner

  694. only

  695. happens

  696. as a

  697. last resort.

  698. It

  699. comes at

  700. the end

  701. of a

  702. lengthy

  703. process

  704. as we'll

  705. see in

  706. a moment

  707. after

  708. gently

  709. pursuing

  710. people

  711. with

  712. grace

  713. treating

  714. them

  715. with

  716. mercy

  717. and

  718. longing

  719. before

  720. God

  721. that

  722. they

  723. would

  724. turn

  725. in

  726. forgiveness.

  727. And

  728. while

  729. those

  730. times

  731. are

  732. always

  733. sad

  734. if

  735. it

  736. has

  737. to

  738. be

  739. done

  740. there

  741. is

  742. good

  743. reason

  744. for

  745. it.

  746. The

  747. first

  748. reason

  749. is

  750. the

  751. salvation

  752. of

  753. the

  754. sinner

  755. the

  756. person

  757. concerned.

  758. Have

  759. a look

  760. at

  761. verse

  762. four.

  763. Again

  764. it's

  765. talking

  766. to the

  767. whole

  768. church.

  769. This

  770. isn't

  771. just

  772. an

  773. individual

  774. thing.

  775. When

  776. you

  777. the

  778. church

  779. verse

  780. four

  781. are

  782. assembled

  783. in

  784. the

  785. name

  786. of

  787. the

  788. Lord

  789. Jesus

  790. and

  791. I

  792. am

  793. with

  794. you

  795. in

  796. spirit

  797. and

  798. the

  799. power

  800. of

  801. the

  802. Lord

  803. Jesus

  804. is

  805. present.

  806. Hand

  807. this

  808. man

  809. over

  810. to

  811. Satan

  812. so

  813. that

  814. the

  815. sinful

  816. nature

  817. may

  818. be

  819. destroyed

  820. and

  821. his

  822. spirit

  823. saved

  824. on

  825. the

  826. day

  827. of

  828. the

  829. Lord.

  830. These

  831. are

  832. very

  833. strong

  834. words

  835. and

  836. we

  837. must

  838. understand

  839. them

  840. carefully.

  841. To

  842. hand

  843. the

  844. person

  845. over

  846. to

  847. Satan

  848. means

  849. to

  850. regard

  851. them

  852. as

  853. an

  854. unbeliever

  855. to

  856. treat

  857. them

  858. as if

  859. they

  860. were

  861. not

  862. a

  863. Christian

  864. and

  865. the

  866. desire

  867. is

  868. that

  869. they

  870. would

  871. come

  872. to

  873. their

  874. senses

  875. and

  876. see

  877. the

  878. mess

  879. in

  880. their

  881. lives

  882. and

  883. turn

  884. to

  885. God

  886. in

  887. repentance

  888. or

  889. as

  890. it

  891. says

  892. in

  893. verse

  894. five

  895. so

  896. that

  897. their

  898. sinful

  899. nature

  900. may

  901. be

  902. destroyed

  903. that

  904. they

  905. would

  906. turn

  907. to

  908. God

  909. and

  910. ask

  911. God

  912. to

  913. deal

  914. with

  915. their

  916. hearts

  917. it's

  918. a little

  919. bit

  920. like

  921. the

  922. story

  923. of

  924. the

  925. lost

  926. son

  927. or

  928. we

  929. know

  930. it

  931. as

  932. the

  933. prodigal

  934. son

  935. that

  936. Jesus

  937. told

  938. remember

  939. in

  940. that

  941. story

  942. how

  943. the

  944. son

  945. deliberately

  946. and

  947. intentionally

  948. turned

  949. away

  950. from

  951. his

  952. father

  953. he

  954. wished

  955. his

  956. father

  957. dead

  958. and

  959. took

  960. his

  961. inheritance

  962. early

  963. and

  964. he

  965. left

  966. and

  967. he

  968. went

  969. off

  970. and

  971. he

  972. lived

  973. however

  974. he

  975. wanted

  976. but

  977. eventually

  978. he

  979. came

  980. to

  981. his

  982. senses

  983. in

  984. the

  985. pig

  986. sky

  987. and

  988. he

  989. returned

  990. to

  991. his

  992. father

  993. he

  994. ran

  995. back

  996. to

  997. his

  998. father

  999. seeking

  1000. forgiveness

  1001. and

  1002. restoration

  1003. well

  1004. in the

  1005. same

  1006. way

  1007. just

  1008. as

  1009. the

  1010. father

  1011. let

  1012. the

  1013. son

  1014. go

  1015. we

  1016. need

  1017. to

  1018. let

  1019. the

  1020. unrepentant

  1021. sinner

  1022. go

  1023. that

  1024. doesn't

  1025. mean

  1026. to

  1027. say

  1028. we

  1029. give

  1030. up

  1031. on

  1032. them

  1033. we

  1034. simply

  1035. pray

  1036. that

  1037. they

  1038. will

  1039. come

  1040. to

  1041. an

  1042. end

  1043. of

  1044. themselves

  1045. that

  1046. they

  1047. would

  1048. come

  1049. to

  1050. their

  1051. senses

  1052. that

  1053. they

  1054. would

  1055. turn

  1056. in

  1057. repentance

  1058. and

  1059. know

  1060. the

  1061. restoration

  1062. of

  1063. God's

  1064. amazing

  1065. grace

  1066. cleaning

  1067. them

  1068. and

  1069. washing

  1070. them

  1071. afresh

  1072. of

  1073. course

  1074. the

  1075. purpose

  1076. of

  1077. all

  1078. of

  1079. this

  1080. is

  1081. their

  1082. salvation

  1083. look

  1084. what

  1085. it

  1086. says

  1087. at

  1088. the

  1089. end

  1090. of

  1091. verse

  1092. five

  1093. next

  1094. that

  1095. he

  1096. would

  1097. be

  1098. saved

  1099. on

  1100. the

  1101. day

  1102. of

  1103. the

  1104. Lord

  1105. one

  1106. day

  1107. the

  1108. Lord

  1109. Jesus

  1110. will

  1111. come

  1112. again

  1113. and

  1114. the

  1115. longing

  1116. and

  1117. the

  1118. desire

  1119. is

  1120. that

  1121. they

  1122. will

  1123. be

  1124. in

  1125. such

  1126. a

  1127. position

  1128. before

  1129. God

  1130. that

  1131. they

  1132. are

  1133. ready

  1134. to

  1135. meet

  1136. him

  1137. that

  1138. they

  1139. know

  1140. the

  1141. forgiveness

  1142. of

  1143. sins

  1144. they

  1145. know

  1146. what

  1147. it

  1148. is

  1149. to

  1150. walk

  1151. in

  1152. fellowship

  1153. with

  1154. God

1155. so separating the sinner is not pleasant

1156. but it may be the means of bringing about

  1157. their salvation

  1158. the second reason

1159. is the protection of the church

  1160. have a look at verse 6

1161. your boasting is not good

1162. don't you know that a little yeast

1163. works through the whole batch of dough

1164. I don't think we do much baking of bread anymore

1165. but I think you can get the illustration here

1166. a tiny bit of yeast

1167. can affect the whole batch of bread

1168. so undealt with sin can affect the whole body

  1169. of the church

1170. you see the nature of yeast means that it spreads

1171. it works itself into the dough

1172. in the same way sin also spreads

1173. affecting the spiritual life of the whole church

1174. not just the one person

  1175. but the whole family

1176. so instead of dealing with sin

1177. we begin to ignore it

1178. and so patterns of behaviour are tolerated by everyone

1179. so what does it matter if somebody does that

1180. what does it matter if that's the way they live

  1181. verse 7

1182. get rid of the old yeast

1183. that you may be a new batch without yeast

  1184. as you really are

  1185. for Christ

  1186. our Passover lamb

  1187. has been sacrificed

1188. let's remember this great truth

1189. that Jesus is our true and ultimate sacrifice for our sin

1190. just as the Passover lamb

1191. with God's means of redeeming and rescuing

  1192. God's people from Egypt

1193. so Jesus' death on the cross

1194. has become our means of redemption for our sin

1195. this is the good news

  1196. when Jesus died

1197. he took my sin and your sin on himself

1198. he was the one who was separated from God

1199. he was the one who was shut out from God

1200. and experienced hell for us

1201. so that we don't have to

1202. so that we could be drawn into his family

  1203. and accepted

1204. so if Christ has made us clean and pure

1205. and blameless in his sight

  1206. shouldn't we also

1207. want to keep the sin from spreading

1208. and affecting the whole church

1209. see what it says at the end of verse 7

1210. this is what you really are

  1211. you're a clean people

  1212. you're a pure people

1213. and if you really are that

1214. well then start cleaning the church up

1215. separating the sinner is never easy

1216. but it is the means

  1217. of protecting the church

  1218. the third reason

  1219. is the mission

  1220. to our community

  1221. to those around us

  1222. look verse 9

  1223. he says

1224. I have written to you in my letter

1225. not to associate with sexually immoral people

  1226. and then a clarification

  1227. verse 10

1228. not at all meaning the people of this world

  1229. as in unbelievers

  1230. who are immoral

1231. or the greedy and swindlers

  1232. or idolaters

  1233. in that case

1234. you would have to leave this world

1235. let me take you back to

  1236. the behaviour of Jesus

  1237. in the gospel

1238. do you remember how the religious leaders

1239. looked down on Jesus with disdain

1240. with the people who he mixed with

1241. do you remember what they said

  1242. he even eats

  1243. with sinners

1244. they didn't like the fact

  1245. that Jesus was meeting

  1246. with ordinary people

  1247. with sinful people

  1248. sharing dinner with them

  1249. talking with them

1250. you see Jesus was very clear in his mission

  1251. he came for sinners

1252. Jesus came for people like you and for me

1253. and the way to meet people like you and me

1254. was to sit down with them

1255. and to share with them

  1256. now as a church

  1257. if we are believers

1258. we should be doing exactly the same

1259. we don't withdraw from the world

1260. and hide ourselves into a nice little cosy corner

1261. we go out into the world

1262. we go out with the good news of Jesus Christ

  1263. we mix

1264. we get to know people

1265. and so we should all be eating

  1266. with sinners

1267. one sinner sitting with another

1268. but we need to make sure our witness

  1269. is crystal clear

  1270. verse 11

1271. but now I am writing to you

1272. that you must not associate

1273. with anyone who calls himself a brother

1274. so again it's coming back to anybody who says

  1275. I'm a Christian

  1276. I'm a follower of Jesus

  1277. but is sexually immoral

  1278. or greedy

  1279. or an idolater

  1280. or a slanderer

  1281. or a drunkard

  1282. or a swindler

  1283. with such a person

  1284. do not even eat

1285. you see what kind of witness is it

1286. if on the one hand

  1287. we're talking about Jesus

  1288. who loves us

1289. who died for our sin

1290. if we say sinful behaviour in the church

  1291. doesn't matter

  1292. what are we saying

  1293. if we're telling people

1294. you need to repent of your sin

1295. but we can behave as we like

  1296. it's hypocritical

  1297. it's making a mockery of Christ's death

1298. it's saying Christ died for nothing

  1299. with such a person

  1300. do not even eat

1301. you see by sitting down and eating

  1302. and socialising

1303. with the unrepentant and persistent sinner

  1304. we are saying

1305. well we accept your behaviour

  1306. it's alright

1307. you can behave as you wish

  1308. it really doesn't matter

  1309. no

1310. for the sake of the church's mission

1311. and our witness to the wider community

  1312. we must

  1313. take a step back

1314. not because we're superior or better

1315. because we see that we've got sin in our own lives

1316. and we need to repent

1317. so that is healthy behaviour in the church

  1318. how do we then

  1319. keep the church healthy

1320. well there are two ways

1321. to keep the church healthy

  1322. here's the first

  1323. we don't judge those

  1324. outside the church

  1325. have a look at verse 12

  1326. look what it says

1327. what business is it of mine

  1328. to judge those

  1329. outside the church

1330. are you not to judge those inside

1331. you see I think we get this round the wrong way

  1332. all the time

1333. we spend our time pointing fingers

1334. at those who are not Christians

1335. and expect them to behave

  1336. as Christians

1337. we look down with a superiority

  1338. we talk about

1339. the affair that our colleague had at work

1340. or our friend who gets drunk

  1341. every weekend

1342. well I want to say

1343. well what do you expect

  1344. they're not believers

1345. they're not followers of Jesus

1346. so why do you expect them

  1347. to behave as believers

1348. what business is it of mine

  1349. to judge those

  1350. outside the church

  1351. our responsibility

1352. is to bring the good news

  1353. of Jesus Christ

1354. his death on the cross

  1355. and the amazing offer

  1356. of grace and forgiveness

  1357. we're to point people

  1358. to Jesus

1359. we're not to sit as

  1360. Lord justice

  1361. over their sin

  1362. we're to offer grace

  1363. and mercy

  1364. love and forgiveness

1365. we're not to write them off

  1366. God will judge

1367. so it's not our business

  1368. to go pointing fingers

  1369. at other people

1370. but this is our business

  1371. we are to judge

  1372. each other

  1373. inside the church

1374. have a look at verse

  1375. 12

  1376. we'll read verse 12

  1377. and 13

1378. what business is it of mine

  1379. to judge those

  1380. outside the church

1381. are you not to judge

  1382. those inside

  1383. God will judge

  1384. those outside

  1385. expel the wicked person

  1386. from among you

  1387. now this doesn't mean

  1388. judgmentalism

1389. where we all go around

  1390. pointing fingers

  1391. and looking for

  1392. every little mistake

  1393. and every little flaw

  1394. and fault

  1395. and going

  1396. you did this

  1397. and you did that

  1398. that's judgmentalism

  1399. where we look down

  1400. in superiority

  1401. and go

  1402. I'm not like that

1403. but you are like that

  1404. now this is

  1405. this is to

  1406. sit in judgment

  1407. where we come alongside

  1408. another person

  1409. and help them deal

  1410. with their sin

  1411. as we expect them

1412. to deal with our sin

  1413. you see

  1414. the real issue here

  1415. is not the sin

  1416. of the world

  1417. but the sin

  1418. within the church

  1419. Jesus died for messy

  1420. people like you

  1421. and me

  1422. so that we could

  1423. become his holy church

  1424. and because we now

  1425. share in his holiness

1426. we now bear his name

  1427. and we're to live

  1428. as holy people

  1429. in a unholy world

1430. so what do we do

  1431. if you see me

  1432. in a sinful way

  1433. what should we do

  1434. with each other

  1435. if we see

  1436. sinful behaviour

  1437. in the life

  1438. of the church

  1439. well

  1440. turn with me please

  1441. back to Matthew's

  1442. gospel

  1443. chapter 18

  1444. Matthew's gospel

  1445. chapter 18

  1446. I think this passage

  1447. that we're going

  1448. to just briefly

  1449. look at here

  1450. is perhaps

  1451. a background

  1452. to what Paul

  1453. has been writing

  1454. in Corinthians

  1455. so here's some

  1456. very practical

  1457. and helpful steps

  1458. for all of us

  1459. to take

  1460. when we see

  1461. sinful behaviour

  1462. in the life

  1463. of the church

  1464. we're not to

  1465. ignore it

  1466. and tolerate it

  1467. we're to deal

  1468. with it

  1469. and while it's

  1470. talking about

  1471. a sin against

  1472. you

  1473. and an individual

  1474. I think there are

  1475. principles here

  1476. that we can apply

  1477. to ourselves

  1478. so let's read

  1479. from verse 15

  1480. of chapter 18

1481. so what should we do

  1482. if we see

  1483. sinful behaviour

  1484. verse 15

  1485. if your brother

  1486. or sister

  1487. sins against you

  1488. go and show

  1489. him his fault

  1490. just between

  1491. the two of you

  1492. so if we see

  1493. something that's

  1494. not right

  1495. we simply go

  1496. to the other

  1497. person

  1498. privately

  1499. we don't do

  1500. a big song

  1501. and dance

  1502. about it

  1503. privately

  1504. to the other

  1505. person

  1506. and explain

  1507. to them

  1508. and show

  1509. them

  1510. what has

  1511. gone wrong

  1512. if he listens

  1513. to you

  1514. you have won

  1515. your brother

  1516. over

  1517. in other words

  1518. you have

  1519. sat with them

  1520. talked with them

  1521. gone to the cross

  1522. with them

  1523. to pray for them

  1524. and to show them

  1525. the way of repentance

1526. and the way we can

  1527. know forgiveness again

  1528. one on one

  1529. that's how we're all

1530. to behave with each other

1531. and you should do that

  1532. with me

1533. and I should do that

  1534. with you

  1535. so that's the first

  1536. thing we should do

  1537. look at verse 16

  1538. but

  1539. if they will

  1540. not listen

  1541. so you've been

  1542. praying with them

  1543. you've been talking

  1544. to them

  1545. if he will not

  1546. listen

  1547. take one or two

  1548. others along

  1549. so that every

  1550. matter may be

  1551. established by the

  1552. testimony of two

  1553. or three

  1554. witnesses

  1555. and I think

  1556. in that case

  1557. there it's saying

  1558. well go to a

  1559. mature

  1560. older Christian

  1561. perhaps an elder

  1562. or leader

  1563. within the church

  1564. and talk to them

  1565. about it

  1566. again it's keeping

  1567. it private

  1568. it's keeping it

  1569. with a couple of

  1570. people

  1571. and then they can

  1572. go to the person

  1573. and address the issue

  1574. and say

  1575. can you not see

  1576. that this behavior

  1577. is wrong

1578. let us go to the

  1579. cross together

  1580. and seek forgiveness

  1581. and a restoration

  1582. that God can bring

  1583. and know the joy

  1584. and the fullness

  1585. of life that he

1586. has come to give us

  1587. verse 17

  1588. but if he refuses

  1589. to listen to them

1590. then tell it to the

  1591. church

  1592. and if he refuses

  1593. to listen even

  1594. to the church

  1595. then treat him

1596. as you would a pagan

  1597. or as an

  1598. unbeliever

  1599. can you see that

  1600. separating the sinner

  1601. only happens

  1602. as a last resort

  1603. it's not something

  1604. we rush to

  1605. immediately

  1606. and go

  1607. out you go

  1608. no it comes

  1609. at the end

  1610. of a lengthy

  1611. process

  1612. after gently

  1613. pursuing them

  1614. with grace

  1615. treating them

  1616. with mercy

  1617. and longing

  1618. that they turn

  1619. in forgiveness

  1620. just as God

  1621. has been patient

  1622. and pursued

  1623. us in grace

  1624. and come to us

  1625. to reach down

  1626. to people like

  1627. you and me

  1628. who are sinners

  1629. longing that we

  1630. turn to him

  1631. so our behaviour

  1632. to each other

  1633. should be the same

  1634. we don't need

  1635. permission

  1636. to go to one

  1637. another

  1638. to address each

  1639. other over these

  1640. things

  1641. God has given

  1642. us the permission

  1643. the church

  1644. is God's

  1645. holy church

  1646. we are his

  1647. holy people

  1648. and we are to

  1649. reflect his

  1650. character to the

  1651. world

  1652. and so we must

  1653. take it seriously

  1654. we take it

  1655. seriously

  1656. because we want

  1657. to see our

  1658. brother or sister

  1659. ultimately saved

  1660. we want to see

  1661. the church

  1662. protected

  1663. so that people

  1664. grow and develop

  1665. in their faith

  1666. and we want the

  1667. church to be a

  1668. clear witness

  1669. where people not

  1670. only hear the

  1671. good news of

  1672. Jesus

  1673. but see a life

  1674. of Christ

  1675. likeness

  1676. within their

  1677. community

  1678. let's pray

  1679. together

  1680. our father

  1681. God we do

  1682. not pretend

  1683. to come

  1684. before you

  1685. as guiltless

  1686. or innocent

  1687. we are all

  1688. aware of our

  1689. own failures

  1690. and falling

  1691. this past

  1692. week

  1693. and we all

  1694. need forgiveness

  1695. we thank you

  1696. for the wonderful

  1697. promise that

  1698. when we confess

  1699. our sins

  1700. you do

  1701. forgive

  1702. and we pray

  1703. father that if

  1704. we are

  1705. persisting

  1706. in some

  1707. particular sin

  1708. if we are

  1709. unrepentant

  1710. in one

  1711. particular area

  1712. that by your

  1713. holy spirit

  1714. you would point

  1715. your finger

  1716. clearly

  1717. upon our

  1718. hearts

  1719. and upon

  1720. our lives

  1721. and cause

  1722. us to run

  1723. to you

  1724. the loving

  1725. father

  1726. who longs

  1727. to forgive

  1728. and longs

  1729. to restore

  1730. and longs

  1731. that we

  1732. would be

  1733. transformed

  1734. to know

  1735. the joy

  1736. and the

  1737. love

  1738. and the

  1739. welcome

  1740. of our

  1741. heavenly

  1742. father

  1743. father would

  1744. you please

  1745. help us

  1746. as a church

  1747. to live

  1748. as we

  1749. should

  1750. and reflect

  1751. you to the

  1752. world

  1753. in which

  1754. we live

  1755. for your

  1756. grace and

  1757. help

  1758. we pray

  1759. in jesus

  1760. name

  1761. amen

  1762. we're going

  1763. to sing

  1764. so

  1765. to

  1766. place
