  1. This morning is from 1 Corinthians chapter 6, verses 12 to 20, and that's on page 1148 of the Church Bibles.

    1 Corinthians 6:12–20

  2. 1 Corinthians 6, beginning at verse 12.

  3. Everything is permissible for me, but not everything is beneficial.

  4. Everything is permissible for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.

  5. Food for the stomach, and the stomach for food.

  6. But God will destroy them both.

  7. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

  8. By his power, God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.

  9. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?

  10. Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute?

  11. Never.

  12. Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body?

  13. For it is said, the two will become one flesh.

  14. But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

  15. Slee from sexual immorality.

  16. All other sins a man commits are outside his body.

  17. But he who sins sexually sins against his own body.

  18. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you,

  19. whom you have received from God?

  20. You are not your own.

  21. You were bought at a price.

  22. Therefore, honour God with your body.

  23. Thanks, Chris.

  24. Well, please keep your Bibles open.

  25. We're going to pray and then look at this section together.

  26. So let's pray together.

  27. Father, we have many gifts from you.

  28. Father, we have many gifts from you.

  29. And the Holy Spirit is another wonderful gift that you have given to your church, your people.

  30. And it's for his help we ask right now that we may hear your word.

  31. That we may apply it to our lives.

  32. That you may change us.

  33. And that we may put right in our lives the things that dishonour you.

  34. So that we may live lives that bring honour to you.

  35. So help us now, we pray in Jesus' name.

  36. Amen.

  37. Carigaline Fornication Church.

  38. What would you feel if you read that on the front page of the Carigdown?

  39. Pastor sleeps with prostitute.

  40. What would you think?

  41. Well, that's what was happening to the church in Corinth.

  42. Have a look at the middle of verse 13.

  43. The body is not meant for sexual immorality.

  44. Verse 16.

  45. Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body?

  46. Verse 18.

  47. Flee from sexual immorality.

  48. You see, Corinth as a city was well known for its promiscuous lifestyle.

  49. It was one of the world's leading centres in trade and commerce.

  50. But it had a very liberal view of life.

  51. In fact, the name Corinth became associated with sexual immorality.

  52. And to act like a Corinthian was to commit fornication.

  53. To have sex outside of marriage.

  54. And the problem is, what was well known in city life

  55. was becoming well known in church life.

  56. It was deeply rooted within the life of the church.

  57. Now, what had happened then, although it's many, many years ago,

  58. can still happen today.

  59. A recent survey that I looked at,

  60. which was conducted among the 18 to 35-year-old age group,

  61. showed that 80% say sex before marriage is never wrong.

  62. 32% say that one-night stands are never wrong.

  63. While an additional 38% say it's sometimes wrong.

  64. 67% of young men and 49% of young women

  65. say viewing porn is an acceptable way to express one's sexuality.

  66. And the reason for this attitude is individual choice,

  67. personal conscience, and our consumer culture.

  68. We live in an anything-goes society.

  69. But it's not just outside the church.

  70. It's also inside the church.

  71. Another survey, which was conducted in the UK,

  72. but I think it still applies to the Irish theme,

  73. showed that 50% of Christian men

  74. and 25% of Christian women

  75. are addicted to porn.

  76. In a church of 100,

  77. that breaks down to one out of every three.

  78. Another showed that 31% of Christians

  79. had sexual partners before marriage.

  80. But it's not just the young and the unmarried.

  81. Increasingly, pastors are counselling marriages

  82. that have broken down because of an affair.

  83. We too, it seems,

  84. are driven by our individual choice,

  85. our personal conscience,

  86. and our consumer culture.

  87. And as we look at all of this,

  88. we must be clear as well to say

  89. that sex is not wrong.

  90. It is a beautiful and it's a wonderful gift from God.

  91. But only in the context of a marriage relationship

  92. between one man and one woman.

  93. And anything outside of that

  94. damages our lives

  95. and distorts our relationships.

  96. For the church in Corinth back in the first century

  97. and the church today,

  98. it seems that everything is permissible.

  99. Have a look at verse 12 of our reading.

  100. The church cried out,

  101. everything is permissible for me.

  102. But not everything is beneficial.

  103. The church cried,

  104. everything is permissible for me.

  105. But I will not be mastered

  106. by anything.

  107. It seems they had accepted this liberal approach

  108. to sex in the church.

  109. We can do what we're like.

  110. We're free people.

  111. We're saved by God's grace.

  112. We're no longer under law and under rules.

  113. I've been accepted by Christ.

  114. Sure, it's no big deal if I sleep with my girlfriend.

  115. God will forgive me.

  116. And what harm is there

  117. if I do watch a little bit of porn?

  118. God doesn't really hold those things against us.

  119. We're free in Christ.

  120. We can do what we like.

  121. But this is a complete distortion

  122. of God's amazing grace towards us.

  123. Have a look back at verse 11,

  124. which we looked at last week.

  125. Chapter 6, verse 11.

  126. And that is what some of you were.

  127. In other words,

  128. this is the way you used to live.

  129. But now that you've come to Christ,

  130. your life has changed.

  131. You were washed.

  132. Your sin has been dealt with.

  133. All your guilt and shame

  134. has been cleaned away.

  135. You were sanctified.

  136. You've now been set apart

  137. to live in God's way.

  138. You are justified.

  139. That means you are now treated

  140. as God's own son.

  141. Loved and treasured by him.

  142. All in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

  143. and by the Spirit of our God.

  144. Yes, this was the kind of behaviour

  145. you used to live in.

  146. But now you've been made holy.

  147. You've been set apart for God.

  148. So everything is not beneficial

  149. within the Christian life.

  150. In fact, this freedom was twisted

  151. to separate the physical

  152. from the spiritual.

  153. Look at verse 13.

  154. Food for the stomach

  155. and the stomach for food.

  156. It's a strange saying, isn't it?

  157. Well, in Greek culture,

  158. the physical was disconnected

  159. from the spiritual.

  160. So what you did with your physical body

  161. had no effect, they said,

  162. on your spiritual life.

  163. Just as eating what you want

  164. is not wrong,

  165. so having sex with who you want

  166. is not wrong.

  167. Food for the stomach

  168. and stomach for the food.

  169. Or to turn it around in another way,

  170. sex for the body

  171. and body for sex.

  172. It's just a physical function.

  173. What's the harm?

  174. Well, we mightn't take

  175. such an extreme view,

  176. but I think those attitudes

  177. are still there.

  178. We separate the physical

  179. from the spiritual.

  180. Oh yes, having an affair is wrong.

  181. I'd never do anything like that.

  182. But watching a little bit of porn

  183. is not going to harm my marriage,

  184. is it?

  185. Having multiple partners

  186. is not right.

  187. I'd never do anything like that.

  188. But sleeping with the same person

  189. before marriage,

  190. so long as I'm committed to them,

  191. that's okay.

  192. Or having a one-night stand.

  193. I mean, it's not such a big issue,

  194. is it really?

  195. As long as it didn't mean anything.

  196. No, we cannot separate

  197. the physical from the spiritual.

  198. These things do matter.

  199. What we do with our physical body

  200. has a profound effect

  201. on our spiritual life.

  202. Verse 13, the end of verse 13.

  203. The body is not meant

  204. for sexual immorality,

  205. but for the Lord.

  206. And the Lord for the body.

  207. You see, our physical bodies

  208. that we have,

  209. they do not belong to us

  210. to do with whatever we like.

  211. They belong to the Lord.

  212. He created us.

  213. He made us.

  214. And we are here to serve Him

  215. and to honour Him.

  216. We're going to look at three things

  217. that show us

  218. that what we do with our bodies

  219. really matters.

  220. And before we look at them,

  221. I need to just point out

  222. that the three titles

  223. that I have here

  224. are not original.

  225. I've stolen them.

  226. I couldn't make them

  227. any better myself.

  228. So there we are.

  229. Here's the first one.

  230. The Christian body

  231. is raised

  232. by God the Father.

  233. So the reason why

  234. our bodies matter

  235. are first,

  236. the Christian body

  237. is raised

  238. by God the Father.

  239. So look at verse 14.

  240. By His power,

  241. God raised the Lord

  242. from the dead

  243. and He will raise us also.

  244. You see,

  245. when Jesus was raised

  246. from the dead,

  247. He was raised

  248. with a physical body.

  249. He actually goes on

  250. to talk about

  251. all of this

  252. in chapter 15.

  253. Have a look with me

  254. if you just go forward

  255. to chapter 15

  256. in 1 Corinthians.

    1 Corinthians 15:3

  257. Chapter 15, verse 3.

  258. And in that whole chapter

  259. He talks about

  260. the resurrection.

  261. Chapter 15, verse 3.

  262. We see here

  263. that Christ was raised

  264. with a physical body.

  265. Verse 3.

  266. So what I received

  267. I passed on to you

  268. as of first importance.

  269. That 1.

  270. Christ died

  271. for our sins

  272. according to the scriptures.

  273. That 2.

  274. He was buried.

  275. 3.

  276. He was raised

  277. on the third day

  278. according to the scriptures.

  279. And 4.

  280. That He appeared

  281. to Peter.

  282. And then He appeared

  283. to the twelve.

  284. And after that

  285. He appeared

  286. to more than 500

  287. of the brothers

  288. at the same time

  289. most of whom

  290. are still living.

  291. You see,

  292. Jesus,

  293. when He rose again

  294. from the grave,

  295. He wasn't a ghost.

  296. He wasn't just

  297. a floating soul

  298. moving around the place.

  299. Jesus was a risen,

  300. living person

  301. with a physical body

  302. that would never

  303. decay or die again.

  304. And what God

  305. has done for Jesus,

  306. God will do

  307. for those

  308. who love Him.

  309. So have a look

  310. at chapter 15

  311. verse 42.

  312. See what it says there?

  313. Chapter 15

  314. verse 42.

  315. So will it be

  316. with the resurrection

  317. of the dead.

  318. The body that is

  319. sown perishable,

  320. well, it will be raised

  321. imperishable.

  322. It's sown in dishonour.

  323. But it's raised

  324. in glory.

  325. It's sown in weakness.

  326. It's raised in power.

  327. It's sown a natural body.

  328. It is raised

  329. a spiritual body.

  330. You see,

  331. for God,

  332. our resurrection life

  333. isn't just physical,

  334. isn't just spiritual,

  335. it's physical.

  336. One day the Lord

  337. is going to return again

  338. and He's going to establish

  339. a new heavens

  340. and a new earth

  341. and this broken,

  342. decaying,

  343. disease-ridden world

  344. is all going to be

  345. put right

  346. and we will be raised

  347. with physical,

  348. brand new bodies

  349. so that we can

  350. enjoy it.

  351. Look at verse 51

  352. of the same chapter.

  353. Listen, I tell you a mystery.

  354. We will not all sleep

  355. but we will be

  356. changed

  357. in a flash,

  358. in the twinkling of an eye,

  359. at the last trumpet.

  360. For the trumpet will sound,

  361. the dead will be raised

  362. imperishable

  363. and we will be

  364. changed.

  365. changed.

  366. We are going to have

  367. brand new bodies.

  368. Now,

  369. if all of that is true,

  370. it has a profound impact

  371. on how we live our life

  372. today.

  373. So look in the same chapter,

  374. verse 58.

  375. The conclusion

  376. of the truth

  377. of the resurrection

  378. and our physical bodies.

  379. Look what it says

  380. in verse 58.

  381. Therefore,

  382. because of that truth,

  383. my dear brothers and sisters,

  384. stand firm,

  385. let nothing move you,

  386. always give yourselves

  387. fully

  388. to the work of the Lord

  389. because you know

  390. that your labour

  391. in the Lord

  392. is not

  393. in vain.

  394. Do you see the connection?

  395. Because our bodies

  396. are going to be raised,

  397. we are now

  398. to use our bodies

  399. to serve the Lord

  400. well today.

  401. Why are we saying

  402. all of this?

  403. Well,

  404. because sexual immorality

  405. actually hinders

  406. our service

  407. for God.

  408. If we behave

  409. in ways we shouldn't do,

  410. it affects

  411. how we serve

  412. the Lord.

  413. Listen to this

  414. very provocative quote

  415. from John Piper

  416. and it's directed

  417. particularly

  418. at the younger men,

  419. to all men.

  420. Here's what he says.

  421. A young man

  422. hears a challenging

  423. call

  424. to throw himself

  425. into the cause

  426. of world evangelisation

  427. or intermission.

  428. He feels the promptings

  429. of the Holy Spirit.

  430. He tastes

  431. the thrill

  432. of following

  433. Jesus,

  434. the King of Kings,

  435. into battle.

  436. But he does not

  437. obey

  438. because he is

  439. viewing porn,

  440. masturbating

  441. or sleeping around.

  442. He feels

  443. guilty.

  444. He can hardly

  445. imagine witnessing

  446. to a pretty girl

  447. about the eternal

  448. plight of her soul

  449. because he is

  450. so habitually

  451. looked at a girl's

  452. naked image

  453. in his imagination.

  454. So he feels

  455. unworthy

  456. and unable

  457. to obey

  458. the call

  459. of God.

  460. Do you see

  461. what he's saying?

  462. What we do

  463. with our bodies

  464. matter

  465. because

  466. what we do

  467. affects whether

  468. we serve the Lord

  469. as we ought to

  470. or not.

  471. Remember,

  472. we are raised

  473. with a physical body.

  474. We will be raised

  475. a glorious body

  476. in God's new

  477. and perfect world.

  478. So start living

  479. that life

  480. now

  481. with the body

  482. that God

  483. has given to you.

  484. Second,

  485. the Christian body

  486. has been united

  487. with God's Son.

  488. So look at

  489. verse 15.

  490. Back in

  491. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  492. chapter 6.

  493. verse 15.

  494. Do you not

  495. know that your

  496. bodies are

  497. members of

  498. Christ himself?

  499. If we're

  500. Christians,

  501. we have been

  502. united to

  503. Christ.

  504. We are in

  505. Christ and

  506. Christ is in

  507. us.

  508. We're bound

  509. together as

  510. one.

  511. That's why

  512. the church

  513. is called

  514. the body

  515. of Christ.

  516. Together,

  517. as God's

  518. people,

  519. we represent

  520. Christ.

  521. The gathered

  522. people are

  523. God's very

  524. presence here

  525. on earth.

  526. So that means

  527. what I do

  528. with my body

  529. reflects who

  530. Christ is

  531. to the world.

  532. We are the

  533. body of Christ

  534. on earth.

  535. So the question

  536. is asked in

  537. the rest of

  538. verse 15.

  539. Shall I then

  540. take the

  541. members of

  542. Christ and

  543. unite them

  544. with a

  545. prostitute?

  546. Never.

  547. do you

  548. not know

  549. that he

  550. who unites

  551. himself with

  552. a prostitute

  553. is one

  554. with her

  555. in body?

  556. Could you

  557. imagine a

  558. husband who's

  559. been away

  560. on a trip?

  561. He comes

  562. back to his

  563. wife after

  564. the weekend

  565. away and

  566. she discovers

  567. that, well,

  568. he's been

  569. sleeping with

  570. another woman.

  571. Wondering what

  572. all the fuss

  573. is about,

  574. he turns

  575. round to

  576. his wife

  577. and he

  578. says,

  579. it didn't

  580. mean anything.

  581. It's not

  582. like I

  583. knew her

  584. or anything.

  585. How do

  586. you think

  587. that would

  588. make her

  589. feel?

  590. Oh,

  591. that's okay

  592. dear,

  593. as long

  594. as it

  595. didn't

  596. mean

  597. anything,

  598. that's

  599. all right.

  600. No,

  601. that's not

  602. how she

  603. feels.

  604. She feels

  605. hurt and

  606. betrayed.

  607. It doesn't

  608. mean anything.

  609. Of course

  610. it means

  611. something.

  612. It means

  613. you have

  614. become,

  615. look at

  616. the rest

  617. of verse

  618. 16,

  619. he says

  620. the two

  621. will become

  622. one flesh.

  623. Now,

  624. can you see

  625. the connection

  626. here?

  627. He's saying

  628. how can we

  629. use our

  630. bodies for

  631. sexually

  632. immoral

  633. behaviour

  634. and say

  635. it doesn't

  636. mean anything

  637. spiritually?

  638. Of course

  639. it means

  640. something.

  641. it means

  642. we are

  643. uniting

  644. Christ

  645. to our

  646. behaviour.

  647. We're

  648. including

  649. Christ

  650. in what

  651. we do.

  652. What I

  653. do is

  654. I'm

  655. bringing

  656. Christ

  657. into it.

  658. Remember,

  659. we represent

  660. Christ,

  661. we're united

  662. to Christ,

  663. we are

  664. Christ's

  665. presence

  666. here on

  667. earth.

  668. So how

  669. we behave

  670. is how

  671. Christ is

  672. being

  673. portrayed.

  674. Verse

  675. 17,

  676. but he

  677. who unites

  678. himself

  679. with the

  680. Lord

  681. is one

  682. with him

  683. in spirit.

  684. How can

  685. we pretend

  686. to be

  687. united to

  688. Christ

  689. if in

  690. fact we

  691. are uniting

  692. ourselves to

  693. other things

  694. and to

  695. other people?

  696. What we

  697. do with

  698. our body

  699. matters.

  700. it declares

  701. to those

  702. around us

  703. who we

  704. are united

  705. to.

  706. So our

  707. bodies

  708. matter

  709. because the

  710. Christian

  711. body is

  712. raised by

  713. God.

  714. It matters

  715. because we

  716. are united

  717. with God's

  718. Son.

  719. And third,

  720. the Christian

  721. body is

  722. occupied

  723. by God's

  724. Spirit.

  725. Have a look

  726. at verse

  727. 19.

  728. Do you

  729. not know

  730. that your

  731. body,

  732. your physical

  733. body,

  734. is a

  735. temple of

  736. the Holy

  737. Spirit who

  738. is in

  739. you,

  740. whom you've

  741. received from

  742. God?

  743. It's an

  744. amazing

  745. statement.

  746. The Old

  747. Testament

  748. temple that

  749. we read

  750. about in

  751. the Old

  752. Testament was

  753. the central

  754. and focal

  755. point of

  756. the city.

  757. God

  758. was the

  759. place where

  760. God came

  761. to dwell

  762. with his

  763. people.

  764. Of course,

  765. we know that

  766. the temple

  767. could never

  768. contain God.

  769. It was

  770. simply a

  771. way of

  772. God to

  773. show his

  774. desire to

  775. be with

  776. his people.

  777. So in

  778. a sense,

  779. God was

  780. saying,

  781. I'm moving

  782. in with

  783. you.

  784. I want

  785. to be

  786. with you.

  787. And all

  788. of that

  789. imagery

  790. was a

  791. picture of

  792. God moving

  793. into our

  794. physical

  795. bodies by

  796. his

  797. spirit.

  798. So verse

  799. 19,

  800. do you

  801. not know

  802. that your

  803. body is

  804. a temple

  805. of the

  806. Holy Spirit

  807. who is

  808. in you?

  809. God has

  810. made our

  811. physical

  812. bodies his

  813. home address.

  814. If we are

  815. Christians,

  816. God is

  817. saying,

  818. I live

  819. in you.

  820. Now again,

  821. this has a

  822. profound effect

  823. on how we

  824. view our

  825. physical

  826. bodies.

  827. You see,

  828. the Spirit,

  829. the Holy

  830. Spirit,

  831. is not

  832. just a

  833. tenant that

  834. we can

  835. kick out

  836. when we

  837. like.

  838. He didn't

  839. just kind

  840. of arrive

  841. in and we

  842. go,

  843. sorry,

  844. don't want

  845. you anymore

  846. and boot

  847. him out

  848. again.

  849. He's not

  850. a tenant.

  851. He's our

  852. new landlord

  853. who's moved

  854. into our

  855. lives.

  856. He now

  857. decides what

  858. is right

  859. and best

  860. for us

  861. and how

  862. we should

  863. live our

  864. life.

  865. In fact,

  866. like a

  867. good landlord,

  868. the Holy

  869. Spirit checks

  870. every single

  871. room in

  872. our lives

  873. convicting

  874. us of

  875. our sin

  876. but also

  877. cleaning us

  878. of our

  879. sin.

  880. So that

  881. means

  882. he's with

  883. you in

  884. the TV

  885. room.

  886. He is

  887. with you

  888. when you

  889. search the

  890. internet.

  891. He is

  892. with you

  893. when you

  894. go to the

  895. bedroom.

  896. the Spirit

  897. of God

  898. is in

  899. us

  900. urging

  901. us

  902. to live

  903. pure

  904. and holy

  905. lives

  906. and enabling

  907. us to

  908. live

  909. holy

  910. lives.

  911. Look at

  912. the rest

  913. of verse

  914. 19.

  915. You are

  916. not your

  917. own.

  918. You were

  919. brought at

  920. a price.

  921. Look at

  922. the value

  923. of your

  924. life.

  925. God gave

  926. his life

  927. for you.

  928. he died

  929. on the

  930. cross for

  931. you.

  932. He's

  933. rescued

  934. you.

  935. He's

  936. freed

  937. you from

  938. a life

  939. of sexual

  940. immorality

  941. which only

  942. enslaves

  943. us and

  944. breaks

  945. us and

  946. destroys

  947. us.

  948. And now

  949. he's

  950. taken

  951. ownership

  952. of our

  953. lives

  954. so that

  955. we might

  956. live a

  957. guilt-free

  958. life,

  959. rid of

  960. shame,

  961. rid of

  962. our sin,

  963. that we

  964. might serve

  965. God.

  966. Look at

  967. the end

  968. of verse

  969. 20.

  970. Therefore,

  971. honour

  972. God

  973. with

  974. your

  975. body.

  976. If we're

  977. Christians,

  978. our bodies

  979. have been

  980. redeemed

  981. by God

  982. and now

  983. they are

  984. occupied

  985. by God's

  986. Holy Spirit

  987. so let us

  988. use them

  989. to do

  990. good so

  991. that we

  992. might reflect

  993. the beauty

  994. of Christ

  995. and the

  996. purity of

  997. Christ

  998. to the

  999. world

  1000. around us.

  1001. So how

  1002. we use

  1003. our bodies

  1004. really

  1005. matters.

  1006. But what

  1007. does all

  1008. of this

  1009. mean in

  1010. practice

  1011. for us?

  1012. Well,

  1013. look at

  1014. verse 18.

  1015. What does

  1016. he say?

  1017. Flee

  1018. from

  1019. sexual

  1020. immorality.

  1021. Run

  1022. away

  1023. from it.

  1024. Don't

  1025. get caught

  1026. up in

  1027. it.

  1028. Use

  1029. your

  1030. physical

  1031. bodies

  1032. to

  1033. actually

  1034. move

  1035. away

  1036. from

  1037. it.

  1038. All

  1039. other

  1040. sins

  1041. a man

  1042. commits

  1043. are

  1044. outside

  1045. his

  1046. body.

  1047. But he

  1048. who sins

  1049. sexually

  1050. sins

  1051. against

  1052. his

  1053. own

  1054. body.

  1055. You

  1056. see,

  1057. as we've

  1058. been looking

  1059. at through

  1060. Corinthians,

  1061. all sin

  1062. is serious.

  1063. But

  1064. sexual

  1065. sin

  1066. ruins

  1067. us

  1068. in a

  1069. way

  1070. that

  1071. all other

  1072. sins

  1073. do not.

  1074. You

  1075. see,

  1076. sexual

  1077. sin

  1078. damages

  1079. us

  1080. physically.

  1081. STDs,

  1082. which

  1083. in turn

  1084. can affect

  1085. the

  1086. chances

  1087. of

  1088. pregnancy.

  1089. Sexual

  1090. sin

  1091. breaks

  1092. us

  1093. emotionally.

  1094. The

  1095. feeling

  1096. of being

  1097. used

  1098. and abused,

  1099. reduced

  1100. as an

  1101. object

  1102. for

  1103. somebody

  1104. else's

  1105. pleasure.

  1106. Sexual

  1107. sin

  1108. destroys

  1109. us

  1110. relationally,

  1111. breaks

  1112. up marriages,

  1113. creates a

  1114. fear of

  1115. commitment,

  1116. reduces the

  1117. loss of

  1118. trust.

  1119. And

  1120. sexual

  1121. sin

  1122. wrecks us

  1123. spiritually,

  1124. no longer

  1125. walking forward

  1126. in service,

  1127. instead we're

  1128. hiding under

  1129. a cloud of

  1130. guilt and

  1131. shame.

  1132. So that's

  1133. why he says

  1134. in verse

  1135. 18,

  1136. flee from

  1137. sexual

  1138. immorality,

  1139. run away

  1140. from it,

  1141. put in

  1142. place

  1143. everything

  1144. physically

  1145. you need

  1146. to do

  1147. so that

  1148. you live

  1149. a pure

  1150. life.

  1151. Don't go

  1152. where temptation

  1153. will take

  1154. you.

  1155. Don't

  1156. watch

  1157. what will

  1158. control

  1159. you.

  1160. And don't

  1161. touch

  1162. what you

  1163. cannot

  1164. stop.

  1165. But it's

  1166. not just

  1167. enough to

  1168. flee from

  1169. sexual

  1170. immorality.

  1171. We must

  1172. also run

  1173. to Christ

  1174. and his

  1175. cross.

  1176. You see,

  1177. whatever our

  1178. past is,

  1179. whatever our

  1180. sexual sin

  1181. may be,

  1182. and let's

  1183. be honest,

  1184. we all

  1185. fail and

  1186. fall in

  1187. this area,

  1188. every single

  1189. one of us.

  1190. So whatever

  1191. our hurts

  1192. and our

  1193. pains may

  1194. be from

  1195. the past

  1196. and that we

  1197. carry into

  1198. our lives

  1199. today,

  1200. run to

  1201. Christ and

  1202. his cross

  1203. because only

  1204. Christ

  1205. can forgive

  1206. you.

  1207. And only

  1208. Christ

  1209. can heal

  1210. you.

  1211. Remember

  1212. what we

  1213. read in

  1214. chapter 1

  1215. verse 18?

  1216. The message

  1217. of the cross

  1218. is foolishness

  1219. to those

  1220. who are

  1221. perishing.

  1222. So for

  1223. those who

  1224. want to

  1225. live a

  1226. sexually

  1227. immoral

  1228. life,

  1229. they'll

  1230. look at

  1231. Christ and

  1232. the cross

  1233. and they'll

  1234. say,

  1235. how stupid,

  1236. how ridiculous.

  1237. How

  1238. are

  1239. saved?

  1240. But to

  1241. those who

  1242. are being

  1243. saved,

  1244. the cross

  1245. is the

  1246. power of

  1247. God.

  1248. So run

  1249. to the

  1250. cross

  1251. because

  1252. Christ

  1253. takes our

  1254. past life

  1255. and he

  1256. gives us

  1257. a brand

  1258. new life.

  1259. Christ

  1260. takes the

  1261. consequences

  1262. of our

  1263. sin and

  1264. he fills

  1265. our life

  1266. with the

  1267. Holy Spirit.

  1268. He takes

  1269. away the

  1270. momentary

  1271. pleasures

  1272. and he

  1273. replaces it

  1274. with everlasting

  1275. joy.

  1276. He takes

  1277. away our

  1278. guilt and

  1279. our shame

  1280. and he

  1281. gives us

  1282. gifts

  1283. so that we

  1284. might serve.

  1285. Run to

  1286. Christ and

  1287. his cross

  1288. because there

  1289. we are

  1290. washed

  1291. like

  1292. stepping into

  1293. a shower

  1294. and all

  1295. the dirt

  1296. being washed

  1297. away so

  1298. Christ

  1299. washes us

  1300. deep inside

  1301. purifying us

  1302. from all

  1303. our guilt

  1304. and shame

  1305. and all

  1306. the mess

  1307. that is

  1308. there

  1309. purifying

  1310. us so

  1311. that we

  1312. can be a

  1313. clean and

  1314. holy people

  1315. so that we

  1316. can honour

  1317. God

  1318. with our

  1319. bodies.

  1320. Our

  1321. bodies are

  1322. not our

  1323. own.

  1324. They were

  1325. bought at

  1326. a price.

  1327. Therefore,

  1328. honour God

  1329. with your

  1330. body.

  1331. Let's pray.

  1332. our

  1333. Father God,

  1334. we're

  1335. conscious

  1336. that as

  1337. we read

  1338. your word

  1339. and as

  1340. we listen

  1341. to it,

  1342. we realise

  1343. that we

  1344. are all,

  1345. every

  1346. single one

  1347. of us,

  1348. we have

  1349. all,

  1350. we are

  1351. all impure.

  1352. We've

  1353. all done

  1354. things,

  1355. we've all

  1356. watched

  1357. things,

  1358. said

  1359. things

  1360. that are

  1361. not honourable

  1362. to you.

  1363. and so

  1364. we come

  1365. to you

  1366. afresh,

  1367. Father God,

  1368. and pray

  1369. that cleansing

  1370. forgiveness

  1371. in our

  1372. lives.

  1373. Help us

  1374. that we

  1375. may see

  1376. that our

  1377. bodies have

  1378. been made

  1379. by you,

  1380. created by

  1381. you,

  1382. created

  1383. for a

  1384. wonderful

  1385. purpose,

  1386. a purpose

  1387. to honour

  1388. you and

  1389. serve you.

  1390. thank you

  1391. that one

  1392. day our

  1393. bodies will

  1394. be raised

  1395. to be

  1396. brand new

  1397. when we

  1398. will live

  1399. with you

  1400. in your

  1401. new heaven
