  1. 24 verses together, and can I say as well that as we go through a topic and a subject like this,

  2. it probably raises more questions than it does answers.

  3. So we're going to try and get through all that we can, but please, I say this often,

  4. but I think I just stress this a bit more that if there are questions from this morning's talk

  5. or anything that you want to discuss through, then please feel free to do that with me afterwards.

  6. We're going to ask for God's help. We're going to pray. So let's do that now.

  7. Father, we thank you for that faithful, loyal love that you show towards us.

  8. And we are continually in need of that love, a love that cares for us in the very best possible way.

  9. And we know that your word, your truth, is what is right and best for us,

  10. whether we are single or whether we are married.

  11. And so we pray that your truth would speak into our hearts, inform our minds,

  12. that we would become a holy people, a holy people in our marriages,

  13. a holy people in our life,

  14. that we may honor you and reflect you

  15. in our relationships one to another.

  16. So please help us, we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  17. Well, let me start with a story.

  18. The names are fictional,

  19. but the story is true.

  20. Laura felt lonely and bitter.

  21. She and Andy had been married for a few years.

  22. When they first met, it truly was love at first sight.

  23. They loved being together.

  24. And so when Andy popped the question,

  25. it was her dreams come true.

  26. She thought back to her wedding day.

  27. It had been amazing.

  28. Friends and family celebrating their new life together.

  29. All their longings fulfilled as they set up home as husband and wife.

  30. But all that seemed a long time ago now.

  31. The once cosy home was now full of regret and anger.

  32. Laura was controlling.

  33. Andy had met someone else.

  34. How had it all gone so wrong?

  35. They sat opposite each other.

  36. Andy in self-denial.

  37. Laura in tears of self-pity.

  38. Now, if you're married here this morning,

  39. you might be able to relate to Laura and Andy in some way.

  40. Marriage is a wonderful gift from God to us,

  41. but no one has ever said marriage is easy.

  42. The church in Corinth, like us,

  43. also faced their marriage problems.

  44. So have a look back at chapter 6, verse 16.

  45. This explains what some of the marriage relationships were like,

  46. or some of the behaviours.

  47. Chapter 6, verse 16.

  48. Do you not know

  49. that he who unites himself with a prostitute

  50. is one with her in body?

  51. For it is said the two

  52. will become one flesh.

  53. You see, it was very common for a husband at that time

  54. to have a wife who would give him children,

  55. he would have a slave who would do his work,

  56. and prostitutes for his sexual pleasure.

  57. And that was the arrangement.

  58. And sadly, this sexual immorality

  59. was not just part of city life in Corinth.

  60. It had become part of Christian married life

  61. within the church.

  62. And as the church reflected on these behaviours,

  63. some went with that kind of lifestyle,

  64. while other people reacted what seems to be very strongly.

  65. So rather than this liberal approach to marriage and sex,

  66. they instead adopted an abstinence

  67. and separation approach to marriage and sex.

  68. So there were these two big ideas going on

  69. in response to the sexual immorality

  70. that seemed to be rooting itself

  71. in the lives of believers within the church family.

  72. So there were some who thought that,

  73. well, if you were married,

  74. it was better to abstain from sex altogether.

  75. So have a look at chapter 7, verse 1.

  76. Paul is writing to the church.

  77. He says,

  78. Now for matters you wrote about.

  79. And here's one of the things they wrote to Paul about.

  80. And they said, it's a quote,

  81. It is good for a man not to marry.

  82. Or better translated,

  83. it is good not to have a sexual relationship in marriage.

  84. So there were some who thought it was better to abstain completely.

  85. On the other side,

  86. there were those who thought that,

  87. well, if you were married,

  88. it was actually better to separate.

  89. So verse 10,

  90. chapter 7, verse 10,

  91. To the married I give this command.

  92. Not I, but the Lord,

  93. a wife must not separate from her husband.

  94. So some were saying we should abstain.

  95. Others were saying we should just separate.

  96. Now from my experience in life,

  97. which isn't very long,

  98. but just in talking with people,

  99. when marriages get into difficulty,

  100. this is exactly what seems to happen.

  101. People abstain.

  102. And they in turn separate.

  103. But marriage is holy.

  104. It is a wonderful gift from God.

  105. And marriage is set apart for God.

  106. And so we should seek to follow God's design

  107. as it reflects something of who he is.

  108. And in the first part of chapter 7,

  109. we're going to see why we should not abstain

  110. and why we should not separate.

  111. So here's the first big heading.

  112. First, marriage and sex.

  113. Why abstinence is wrong.

  114. I remember babysitting for two young boys.

  115. Many years ago,

  116. their dad was the local Presbyterian minister

  117. and we were very good friends of the family.

  118. Well, anyway, on this particular evening,

  119. I could see that the older brother

  120. was pushing the younger brother

  121. to ask me a question.

  122. And their concern was

  123. their mum was pregnant.

  124. Well, when it dawned on them

  125. that their parents needed to have sex

  126. for this to happen,

  127. the elder brother,

  128. he was absolutely horrified

  129. and he blurted out to me and he said,

  130. but my dad's a minister.

  131. Well, I'm a minister too

  132. and sex is not wrong.

  133. It's a beautiful gift from God,

  134. but only in the context

  135. of a married relationship

  136. between one man

  137. and one woman.

  138. So first,

  139. as we've been seeing,

  140. God says there is no sex

  141. outside of marriage.

  142. We've seen this through chapter 5

  143. and chapter 6.

  144. Sexual immorality was not just part of city life,

  145. it had become rooted within church life

  146. and within married life.

  147. And so in response to all of this,

  148. look at the end of chapter 6,

  149. just the last couple of lines.

  150. He says,

  151. you are not your own,

  152. so you're not free to do

  153. whatever you like in life.

  154. You were bought at a price.

  155. Jesus died for you.

  156. He rescued you

  157. from a life of immorality

  158. to live a holy life for God.

  159. Therefore,

  160. honour God with your body.

  161. Now, if we're going to honour God

  162. with our body,

  163. that means we're to

  164. follow God's good design

  165. for marriage.

  166. marriage,

  167. and God's good design

  168. for marriage

  169. is clearly put right

  170. at the beginning

  171. of the story of the Bible

  172. in Genesis 2, 24,

  173. where God says,

  174. a man will leave

  175. his father and mother,

  176. be united to his wife,

  177. and they will become

  178. one flesh.

  179. And that becoming

  180. one flesh means

  181. that they become

  182. together as one

  183. through their sexual relationship,

  184. united to each other,

  185. and one with each other.

  186. It seals their marriage

  187. commitment.

  188. Now, while God is very clear

  189. that there is no sex

  190. outside of marriage,

  191. on a positive note,

  192. and in contrast,

  193. God says,

  194. there should be no marriage

  195. without sex.

  196. And this is where it begins

  197. to answer the question.

  198. So, chapter 7, verse 1.

  199. He says,

  200. now for the matters

  201. you wrote about,

  202. it is good for a man

  203. not to marry.

  204. So, some were saying,

  205. it's good,

  206. it's better for us

  207. not to have a sexual

  208. relationship in marriage.

  209. Well, nothing could be

  210. further from the truth.

  211. Sex is crucial

  212. for growing

  213. and nurturing

  214. the marriage.

  215. Three things

  216. we're going to look at here.

  217. first,

  218. sex protects

  219. the marriage union.

  220. Look at verse 2.

  221. But since there is

  222. so much immorality,

  223. there was so much

  224. wrong behaviour,

  225. husbands in particular

  226. carrying on

  227. the way that they were,

  228. he says to those

  229. who were married,

  230. each man

  231. should have

  232. his own wife,

  233. should have a

  234. sexual relationship

  235. with his own wife,

  236. not anybody else,

  237. and each woman

  238. her own husband.

  239. You see,

  240. the marriage relationship

  241. is exclusive.

  242. And so,

  243. their sexual relationship

  244. is exclusive.

  245. And this is what actually

  246. keeps husband

  247. and wife

  248. together.

  249. So,

  250. look down

  251. at verse 5.

  252. He says,

  253. do not deprive

  254. each other

  255. except by

  256. mutual consent

  257. and for a time.

  258. So,

  259. it must be

  260. agreed

  261. so that you

  262. may devote

  263. yourselves

  264. to prayer.

  265. Now,

  266. I think the

  267. implication there

  268. is that

  269. as married couples

  270. we should be

  271. praying together.

  272. Praying together

  273. to protect

  274. the marriage

  275. relationship.

  276. and the

  277. concern here

  278. is he's saying

  279. that don't

  280. deprive

  281. each other

  282. sexually

  283. because by

  284. depriving

  285. one another

  286. all you do

  287. is you drive

  288. a wedge

  289. of division

  290. between each

  291. other

  292. which causes

  293. the marriage

  294. relationship

  295. to break apart

  296. and it could

  297. lead to

  298. temptation.

  299. So,

  300. look at the rest

  301. of verse 5.

  302. Then come

  303. together again

  304. so that

  305. Satan

  306. will not

  307. tempt you

  308. because of

  309. your lack

  310. of self

  311. control.

  312. Now,

  313. while this

  314. should never

  315. ever be

  316. an excuse

  317. sexual

  318. inactivity

  319. can be

  320. one reason

  321. for a

  322. husband

  323. or a

  324. wife

  325. leaving

  326. and having

  327. an affair

  328. with somebody

  329. else

  330. or causing

  331. the marriage

  332. relationship

  333. to drift

  334. apart.

  335. It can

  336. cause

  337. division

  338. rather

  339. than

  340. unite.

  341. Verse 6,

  342. he says,

  343. I say this

  344. as a

  345. concession

  346. not as

  347. a command.

  348. In other

  349. words,

  350. if you

  351. must

  352. abstain,

  353. if you

  354. think that's

  355. important

  356. for you

  357. to do,

  358. make sure

  359. you are

  360. very,

  361. very careful

  362. in how

  363. you do

  364. that because

  365. it can

  366. cause

  367. division.

  368. It could

  369. break

  370. the marriage

  371. relationship.

  372. So,

  373. first of

  374. all,

  375. sex

  376. protects

  377. the

  378. marriage

  379. union.

  380. It is

  381. between

  382. one

  383. husband

  384. and

  385. one

  386. wife

  387. together

  388. and

  389. it

  390. is

  391. crucial

  392. that

  393. it

  394. is

  395. kept

  396. in

  397. that

  398. way.

  399. Second,

  400. sex

  401. serves

  402. the

  403. other's

  404. needs.

  405. So,

  406. look at

  407. verse 3.

  408. The

  409. husband

  410. should

  411. fulfil

  412. his

  413. marital

  414. duty

  415. to

  416. his

  417. wife

  418. and

  419. likewise

  420. the

  421. wife

  422. to

  423. her

  424. husband.

  425. Now,

  426. again,

  427. when husband

  428. and wife

  429. get married,

  430. they are

  431. giving

  432. themselves

  433. over to

  434. the other

  435. person.

  436. With my

  437. body,

  438. I serve

  439. my wife

  440. and she

  441. in turn

  442. serves

  443. me.

  444. So,

  445. sex

  446. isn't

  447. something

  448. that we

  449. demand

  450. from each

  451. other.

  452. That's

  453. very selfish.

  454. That makes

  455. marriage all

  456. about my

  457. wants and

  458. my desires

  459. and my

  460. pleasure.

  461. it turns

  462. the other

  463. person

  464. into an

  465. object

  466. of

  467. self-

  468. gratification.

  469. No,

  470. sex is

  471. something

  472. we don't

  473. take

  474. or we

  475. don't

  476. look at

  477. something

  478. as

  479. getting.

  480. It is

  481. something

  482. we give

  483. in loving

  484. service to

  485. fulfil the

  486. needs of

  487. our husband

  488. or wife.

  489. So,

  490. it is

  491. loving

  492. service.

  493. And I

  494. think that

  495. should be

  496. a good

  497. answer to

  498. verse 9.

  499. So,

  500. have a

  501. look at

  502. verse 9.

  503. All the

  504. hot-blooded

  505. young males

  506. read this

  507. verse and

  508. they go,

  509. but if they

  510. cannot control

  511. themselves,

  512. they should

  513. marry,

  514. for it is

  515. better to

  516. marry than

  517. to burn

  518. with passion.

  519. So,

  520. that's why

  521. I need

  522. to get

  523. married.

  524. Well,

  525. that must

  526. be balanced

  527. very carefully

  528. with what

  529. we've just

  530. looked at

  531. in verse

  532. 3.

  533. It's not

  534. about

  535. getting

  536. or taking

  537. and fulfilling

  538. my desires

  539. and my

  540. wants.

  541. It's about

  542. loving

  543. service to

  544. fulfil the

  545. needs of

  546. our husband

  547. or wife.

  548. Third

  549. thing,

  550. sex

  551. creates a

  552. deeper

  553. intimacy.

  554. This is

  555. all in

  556. relation to

  557. protecting and

  558. keeping that

  559. bond of

  560. marriage

  561. together.

  562. So,

  563. look at

  564. verse 4.

  565. The wife's

  566. body does

  567. not belong

  568. to her

  569. alone,

  570. but also

  571. to her

  572. husband.

  573. In the

  574. same way,

  575. the husband's

  576. body does

  577. not belong

  578. to him

  579. alone,

  580. but also

  581. to his

  582. wife.

  583. Now,

  584. how radical

  585. and revolutionary

  586. is that

  587. in today's

  588. culture?

  589. We all

  590. say it's

  591. my body

  592. to do

  593. with whatever

  594. I want

  595. to do.

  596. No,

  597. we belong

  598. to one

  599. another.

  600. And sex

  601. is deeply

  602. intimate.

  603. And within

  604. that intimacy

  605. it is very,

  606. very vulnerable.

  607. My wife

  608. is saying

  609. to me,

  610. my body

  611. is for

  612. you

  613. and for

  614. you

  615. alone.

  616. And the

  617. husband is

  618. saying,

  619. my body

  620. is for

  621. you

  622. and for

  623. you

  624. alone.

  625. And

  626. together

  627. it's not

  628. just about

  629. being

  630. physically

  631. naked,

  632. but it's

  633. about being

  634. emotionally

  635. naked.

  636. We are

  637. entrusting

  638. ourselves

  639. to one

  640. another

  641. and giving

  642. access

  643. to the

  644. other

  645. in the

  646. most

  647. deepest

  648. possible

  649. way.

  650. And in

  651. this way

  652. it grows

  653. trust,

  654. it builds

  655. ties,

  656. that together

  657. creates

  658. intimacy.

  659. So you

  660. see,

  661. sex is a

  662. good gift

  663. from God.

  664. Contrary to

  665. what the

  666. world says,

  667. God is

  668. not against

  669. sex.

  670. He is

  671. for it

  672. within the

  673. context of

  674. that loving

  675. relationship

  676. between a

  677. husband and

  678. wife.

  679. And it

  680. is,

  681. yes,

  682. of course,

  683. from other

  684. scriptures,

  685. it is for

  686. creating

  687. new life,

  688. love,

  689. but it

  690. is also

  691. for the

  692. growing and

  693. the nurturing

  694. of that

  695. holy

  696. marriage

  697. relationship.

  698. But it's

  699. not always

  700. easy,

  701. is it?

  702. Verse 7,

  703. he says,

  704. I wish that

  705. all men

  706. were as I

  707. am.

  708. Paul was

  709. single at

  710. the time.

  711. We're not

  712. sure if he

  713. was ever

  714. married,

  715. we don't

  716. know that,

  717. but at

  718. this time

  719. it seems

  720. that he

  721. was single.

  722. But each

  723. one has

  724. his own

  725. gift,

  726. from God.

  727. One has

  728. this gift,

  729. another has

  730. that.

  731. Some are

  732. single,

  733. he's saying,

  734. and that's

  735. a gift

  736. from God.

  737. It may

  738. change in

  739. time.

  740. Others are

  741. married,

  742. and that

  743. is a gift

  744. from God.

  745. Now,

  746. in the

  747. context of

  748. marriage,

  749. if we

  750. are married,

  751. we should

  752. be very

  753. careful to

  754. nurture this

  755. special gift

  756. that marriage

  757. is.

  758. It is a

  759. gift from

  760. God to

  761. us,

  762. not to

  763. be abused

  764. or used

  765. as we

  766. want,

  767. so we

  768. must

  769. nurture

  770. that gift.

  771. And

  772. every

  773. marriage

  774. will at

  775. some

  776. stage

  777. struggle,

  778. and they

  779. will struggle

  780. sexually,

  781. and it

  782. has the

  783. potential to

  784. tear marriages

  785. apart,

  786. and the

  787. solution to

  788. that is

  789. not abstinence,

  790. but a

  791. learning to

  792. serve,

  793. and a

  794. learning to

  795. give.

  796. love.

  797. And that

  798. takes

  799. gentleness

  800. and care,

  801. and that's

  802. why I think

  803. in verse

  804. five it

  805. talks about

  806. prayer,

  807. the need

  808. for husbands

  809. and wives

  810. to be

  811. praying

  812. together,

  813. and making

  814. that a

  815. part of

  816. your life

  817. together.

  818. So if

  819. we're here

  820. this morning,

  821. and we're

  822. married,

  823. and we

  824. struggle in

  825. this whole

  826. area,

  827. don't be

  828. embarrassed,

  829. don't be

  830. afraid to

  831. ask for

  832. help or

  833. for support,

  834. nurture

  835. that holy

  836. gift of

  837. marriage,

  838. it is

  839. God's

  840. means of

  841. keeping

  842. that

  843. relationship

  844. intact.

  845. So that's

  846. the first

  847. big question

  848. or first

  849. big answer.

  850. The next

  851. one he

  852. looks at

  853. is marriage

  854. and

  855. unbelievers,

  856. so why

  857. separation

  858. is wrong.

  859. You see,

  860. marriage isn't

  861. just an

  862. exclusive

  863. relationship

  864. between

  865. one man

  866. and one

  867. woman,

  868. it's a

  869. lifelong

  870. relationship,

  871. and this

  872. applies whether

  873. our spouse

  874. is a

  875. believer,

  876. a follower

  877. of Christ,

  878. or is

  879. an

  880. unbeliever.

  881. First,

  882. marriage is

  883. for life.

  884. Look at

  885. verse 10.

  886. To the

  887. married I

  888. give this

  889. command,

  890. not I

  891. but the

  892. Lord,

  893. so he's

  894. quoting here,

  895. he's applying

  896. the teaching

  897. of Jesus.

  898. He says,

  899. a wife

  900. must not

  901. separate

  902. from her

  903. husband,

  904. but if

  905. she does,

  906. she must

  907. remain

  908. unmarried

  909. or else

  910. be reconciled

  911. to her

  912. husband,

  913. and a

  914. husband must

  915. not divorce

  916. his wife.

  917. Can you

  918. remember what

  919. Jesus spoke

  920. about when

  921. he quoted

  922. God's design

  923. in Genesis?

  924. Do you

  925. remember his

  926. words?

  927. What God

  928. has joined

  929. together,

  930. let man

  931. not separate.

  932. So it's

  933. to be a

  934. lifelong union,

  935. now sadly,

  936. there will

  937. be times

  938. when we

  939. do deal

  940. with separation

  941. or divorce,

  942. and we're

  943. going to

  944. come to

  945. that in

  946. a moment,

  947. so if

  948. that's a

  949. question in

  950. your mind

  951. right now,

  952. just hold

  953. on to it,

  954. and we'll

  955. come back

  956. to it.

  957. But for

  958. now,

  959. I don't

  960. want us

  961. to lose

  962. the focus

  963. that marriage

  964. is lifelong,

  965. and the

  966. reason that

  967. it is

  968. lifelong is

  969. this,

  970. it can

  971. lead to

  972. the salvation

  973. of an

  974. unbeliever.

  975. And this

  976. is true

  977. in two

  978. ways.

  979. First,

  980. it can

  981. lead to

  982. the salvation

  983. of an

  984. unbelieving

  985. spouse.

  986. So this

  987. is thinking

  988. of a

  989. marriage

  990. relationship

  991. where one

  992. of them

  993. is a

  994. Christian

  995. and the

  996. other

  997. one is

  998. not.

  999. So first,

  1000. marriage can

  1001. save your

  1002. unbelieving

  1003. spouse.

  1004. So look

  1005. at verse

  1006. 12.

  1007. To the

  1008. rest I

  1009. say this,

  1010. so those

  1011. who are

  1012. in that

  1013. married

  1014. relationship,

  1015. I, not

  1016. the Lord,

  1017. so he's

  1018. no longer

  1019. quoting what

  1020. Jesus has

  1021. said, but

  1022. Paul's words

  1023. are just

  1024. as authoritative

  1025. as Jesus.

  1026. He says,

  1027. if any

  1028. brother has

  1029. a wife who

  1030. is not a

  1031. believer,

  1032. and she

  1033. is willing

  1034. to live

  1035. with him,

  1036. he must

  1037. not divorce

  1038. her.

  1039. And the

  1040. same is

  1041. true in

  1042. the opposite.

  1043. So if a

  1044. woman has

  1045. a husband

  1046. who is

  1047. not a

  1048. believer,

  1049. and he

  1050. is willing

  1051. to live

  1052. with her,

  1053. she must

  1054. not divorce

  1055. him.

  1056. You see,

  1057. some people

  1058. may take

  1059. the view

  1060. that, well,

  1061. look, if

  1062. my husband

  1063. or wife,

  1064. they're not

  1065. Christians,

  1066. then it's

  1067. not good

  1068. for me.

  1069. It's not

  1070. good for

  1071. me and

  1072. my relationship

  1073. with God.

  1074. So I

  1075. need to

  1076. kind of

  1077. get out

  1078. of this

  1079. relationship

  1080. and find

  1081. myself a

  1082. Christian

  1083. husband or

  1084. a Christian

  1085. wife.

  1086. If I'm

  1087. really going

  1088. to grow

  1089. as a

  1090. Christian,

  1091. then I

  1092. need to

  1093. leave them.

  1094. And I

  1095. think that's

  1096. kind of

  1097. what some

  1098. of the

  1099. thinking

  1100. was within

  1101. these marriages

  1102. in Corinth.

  1103. But there's

  1104. actually a

  1105. greater purpose

  1106. than our

  1107. own spiritual

  1108. life.

  1109. And that

  1110. greater purpose

  1111. is the

  1112. salvation of

  1113. our unbelieving

  1114. husband or

  1115. wife.

  1116. So look at

  1117. verse 14.

  1118. Follow with

  1119. me through

  1120. these,

  1121. because they're

  1122. quite technical

  1123. and we need

  1124. to follow

  1125. along.

  1126. So verse

  1127. 14.

  1128. For the

  1129. unbelieving

  1130. husband has

  1131. been sanctified

  1132. through his

  1133. wife, and

  1134. the unbelieving

  1135. wife has

  1136. been sanctified

  1137. through her

  1138. believing

  1139. husband.

  1140. Now

  1141. sanctified,

  1142. we've come

  1143. across that

  1144. word before

  1145. in Corinthians.

  1146. It means to

  1147. be made

  1148. holy before

  1149. God, to

  1150. be pure

  1151. and blameless

  1152. in his

  1153. sight.

  1154. and it

  1155. also means

  1156. to be set

  1157. apart for

  1158. God.

  1159. So God

  1160. has won

  1161. you over

  1162. and now

  1163. you live

  1164. for him.

  1165. You're set

  1166. apart for

  1167. his ways.

  1168. So as

  1169. God looks

  1170. upon the

  1171. marriage of

  1172. a believing

  1173. person and

  1174. an unbeliever

  1175. together,

  1176. God looks

  1177. upon that

  1178. marriage as

  1179. sanctified.

  1180. He's saying

  1181. that marriage

  1182. is holy.

  1183. It's pure.

  1184. I recognise

  1185. that marriage.

  1186. Marriage is

  1187. good.

  1188. It's a gift

  1189. of God

  1190. to you.

  1191. And what's

  1192. the implication?

  1193. Well it

  1194. doesn't mean

  1195. that an

  1196. unbeliever is

  1197. saved simply

  1198. because they

  1199. are married

  1200. to a

  1201. believer.

  1202. So just

  1203. because an

  1204. unbeliever

  1205. is with

  1206. a believer

  1207. doesn't mean

  1208. they're going

  1209. to become

  1210. a Christian.

  1211. But what it

  1212. does mean

  1213. is that it

  1214. provides the

  1215. opportunity

  1216. for salvation

  1217. and that

  1218. salvation is

  1219. very real

  1220. because they

  1221. are married

  1222. to a

  1223. believer.

  1224. So look

  1225. at verse

  1226. 16.

  1227. So how

  1228. do you

  1229. know

  1230. wife

  1231. whether

  1232. you will

  1233. save

  1234. your

  1235. husband?

  1236. Or how

  1237. do you

  1238. know

  1239. husband

  1240. whether

  1241. you will

  1242. save

  1243. your

  1244. wife?

  1245. So the

  1246. purpose

  1247. he's saying

  1248. of not

  1249. separating

  1250. but staying

  1251. together

  1252. is the

  1253. salvation

  1254. of your

  1255. unbelieving

  1256. spouse.

  1257. and it's

  1258. applied in

  1259. a second

  1260. way to

  1261. unbelieving

  1262. children.

  1263. So

  1264. marriage

  1265. can also

  1266. save

  1267. your

  1268. unbelieving

  1269. children.

  1270. So look

  1271. at verse

  1272. 14.

  1273. We'll read

  1274. the whole

  1275. of it

  1276. again.

  1277. Verse

  1278. 14.

  1279. For the

  1280. unbelieving

  1281. husband has

  1282. been sanctified

  1283. through his

  1284. wife and

  1285. the unbelieving

  1286. wife has

  1287. been sanctified

  1288. through her

  1289. believing

  1290. husband.

  1291. children

  1292. otherwise

  1293. your

  1294. children

  1295. would be

  1296. unclean.

  1297. But as

  1298. it is

  1299. they are

  1300. holy.

  1301. So I

  1302. think the

  1303. same idea

  1304. is being

  1305. applied here

  1306. to children.

  1307. It's a

  1308. great

  1309. privilege

  1310. it's a

  1311. wonderful

  1312. privilege

  1313. for a

  1314. child to

  1315. grow up

  1316. in a

  1317. home where

  1318. both

  1319. parents

  1320. believe.

  1321. I

  1322. thank

  1323. God

  1324. that

  1325. that's

  1326. how my

  1327. life

  1328. started.

  1329. A

  1330. mum

  1331. who's

  1332. going to

  1333. pray for

  1334. you.

  1335. a dad

  1336. who's

  1337. going to

  1338. read the

  1339. Bible

  1340. with you.

  1341. And if

  1342. that's

  1343. you here

  1344. this morning

  1345. mums and

  1346. dads can

  1347. I just

  1348. encourage

  1349. you to

  1350. invest that

  1351. time in

  1352. praying for

  1353. your children

  1354. and reading

  1355. with them.

  1356. That is the

  1357. most wonderful

  1358. gift you

  1359. could ever

  1360. give to

  1361. your children.

  1362. And through

  1363. the believing

  1364. parents they

  1365. get to hear

  1366. the good

  1367. news of

  1368. Christ.

  1369. Christ.

  1370. And the

  1371. same is

  1372. true if

  1373. only one

  1374. of the

  1375. parents

  1376. believes or

  1377. if only

  1378. one of

  1379. the parents

  1380. is a

  1381. Christian.

  1382. So in

  1383. that sense

  1384. look at

  1385. the end

  1386. of verse

  1387. 14 he

  1388. describes

  1389. the children

  1390. of that

  1391. married

  1392. relationship

  1393. as holy.

  1394. In other

  1395. words they're

  1396. also set

  1397. apart for

  1398. God.

  1399. They're

  1400. under the

  1401. care of

  1402. a loving

  1403. parent who

  1404. can pray

  1405. for them

  1406. and teach

  1407. them the

  1408. good news

  1409. of Christ.

  1410. You may

  1411. not have

  1412. the support

  1413. of your

  1414. spouse in

  1415. doing so

  1416. but there

  1417. is nothing

  1418. to stop

  1419. you praying

  1420. for them

  1421. and encouraging

  1422. them.

  1423. They are

  1424. in a

  1425. very special

  1426. unique

  1427. relationship

  1428. with their

  1429. believing mum

  1430. or dad

  1431. because through

  1432. them they get

  1433. to see and

  1434. hear the

  1435. good news

  1436. of Christ.

  1437. So the

  1438. purpose of

  1439. not separating

  1440. but staying

  1441. together including

  1442. with your

  1443. children is

  1444. salvation

  1445. of their

  1446. lives.

  1447. Now

  1448. sadly

  1449. sometimes

  1450. marriages do

  1451. come to

  1452. an end

  1453. before

  1454. death

  1455. do us

  1456. part.

  1457. So look

  1458. at verse

  1459. 15.

  1460. But if the

  1461. unbeliever

  1462. leaves

  1463. let him

  1464. do so.

  1465. a believing

  1466. man or

  1467. woman is

  1468. not bound

  1469. in such

  1470. circumstances.

  1471. God has

  1472. called us

  1473. to live

  1474. in peace.

  1475. Now while

  1476. we should

  1477. always seek

  1478. to do all

  1479. we can to

  1480. keep the

  1481. marriage

  1482. together we

  1483. cannot make

  1484. an unbeliever

  1485. stay in the

  1486. marriage.

  1487. It's sad

  1488. and sometimes

  1489. the believer

  1490. who is left

  1491. is the one

  1492. who is there

  1493. also with

  1494. the children

  1495. and in

  1496. that situation

  1497. it requires

  1498. the church

  1499. to gather

  1500. round in

  1501. loving support

  1502. to care

  1503. for that

  1504. family.

  1505. To watch

  1506. out for

  1507. their practical

  1508. physical

  1509. emotional

  1510. all the

  1511. needs that

  1512. they may

  1513. have.

  1514. It's the

  1515. responsibility

  1516. of the

  1517. church to

  1518. care for

  1519. them.

  1520. So the

  1521. clear teaching

  1522. is that it

  1523. seems to be

  1524. through this

  1525. is that

  1526. marriage is

  1527. lifelong.

  1528. It is for

  1529. life until

  1530. death do us

  1531. part.

  1532. And we

  1533. should not

  1534. separate or

  1535. divorce because

  1536. marriage can

  1537. lead to the

  1538. salvation of

  1539. your unbelieving

  1540. spouse and

  1541. children.

  1542. But there's

  1543. still the issue

  1544. of verse 11

  1545. isn't there?

  1546. I wonder if

  1547. you noticed

  1548. it.

  1549. Let's read

  1550. verse 10

  1551. again.

  1552. To the

  1553. married I

  1554. give this

  1555. command.

  1556. A wife

  1557. must not

  1558. separate from

  1559. her husband.

  1560. but if

  1561. she does.

  1562. So it

  1563. seems at

  1564. this point

  1565. there are

  1566. circumstances

  1567. when separation

  1568. or divorce

  1569. may be

  1570. necessary.

  1571. In

  1572. Matthew's

  1573. gospel Jesus

  1574. dealt with

  1575. this question

  1576. with people.

  1577. And in that

  1578. context in

  1579. Matthew

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  1580. chapter 19

  1581. Jesus spoke

  1582. about

  1583. unfaithfulness

  1584. in marriage

  1585. as the

  1586. only reason.

  1587. Now that

  1588. unfaithfulness

  1589. is either the

  1590. husband or

  1591. wife not

  1592. being faithful

  1593. to the

  1594. marriage

  1595. relationship that

  1596. they've committed

  1597. to each other.

  1598. An unfaithfulness

  1599. in terms of

  1600. well maybe

  1601. they've gone off

  1602. and had an

  1603. affair and

  1604. they're now

  1605. living with

  1606. somebody else.

  1607. or maybe

  1608. because of

  1609. abuse

  1610. whether that's

  1611. physical abuse

  1612. or verbal

  1613. or psychological

  1614. abuse.

  1615. So living

  1616. with an

  1617. unfaithful

  1618. spouse

  1619. in that

  1620. particular

  1621. circumstance

  1622. well they may

  1623. need to

  1624. separate

  1625. for their

  1626. physical

  1627. protection

  1628. for their

  1629. mental

  1630. well being

  1631. for the

  1632. care

  1633. of their

  1634. children

  1635. that might

  1636. be necessary.

  1637. And again

  1638. how the

  1639. church

  1640. responds

  1641. is crucial.

  1642. If a

  1643. marriage

  1644. does

  1645. separate

  1646. we need

  1647. to gather

  1648. round not

  1649. in condemnation

  1650. not in

  1651. pointing

  1652. fingers

  1653. but in

  1654. grace.

  1655. Any

  1656. separation

  1657. or any

  1658. divorce

  1659. is painful

  1660. for anybody

  1661. and it

  1662. can leave

  1663. people with

  1664. an enormous

  1665. amount of

  1666. guilt and

  1667. shame

  1668. whether they've

  1669. played no

  1670. part in it

  1671. at all.

  1672. And there's a

  1673. certain stigma

  1674. that's attached

  1675. to it

  1676. that it is

  1677. hard for

  1678. people.

  1679. And in that

  1680. context we need

  1681. to be holding

  1682. out the hope

  1683. of the gospel

  1684. to point them

  1685. to our

  1686. saviour

  1687. Jesus Christ

  1688. who not only

  1689. forgives all

  1690. of our sins

  1691. but he's the

  1692. one who heals

  1693. our hurts.

  1694. Who gathers us

  1695. in love and

  1696. compassion

  1697. and cares

  1698. for us

  1699. immensely.

  1700. So we need

  1701. to be careful

  1702. how we think

  1703. about people

  1704. rather than

  1705. push them

  1706. away in

  1707. condemnation

  1708. and judgment

  1709. we need to

  1710. encourage

  1711. and love

  1712. and support.

  1713. But as we

  1714. said none of

  1715. these things

  1716. are easy

  1717. and it isn't

  1718. something we

  1719. should rush

  1720. into.

  1721. Every effort

  1722. should be made

  1723. to restore

  1724. and where

  1725. possible

  1726. reconcile

  1727. that relationship.

  1728. But let's

  1729. not lose

  1730. the big

  1731. picture here

  1732. of what he's

  1733. saying.

  1734. Marriage

  1735. is for life

  1736. and it's

  1737. for the

  1738. saving purpose

  1739. of our

  1740. unbelieving

  1741. family.

  1742. So

  1743. marriage and

  1744. sex

  1745. why abstinence

  1746. is wrong

  1747. marriage and

  1748. unbelievers

  1749. why separation

  1750. is wrong

  1751. and then

  1752. third marriage

  1753. and contentment

  1754. our need

  1755. of grace

  1756. and how

  1757. if we are

  1758. married we

  1759. all need

  1760. God's grace.

  1761. So look at

  1762. verse 17.

  1763. This is really

  1764. a kind of

  1765. a conclusion

  1766. he brings

  1767. these two

  1768. big ideas

  1769. together.

  1770. Verse 17

  1771. nevertheless

  1772. so whatever

  1773. your married

  1774. relationship

  1775. is like

  1776. look at what

  1777. he says

  1778. each one

  1779. should retain

  1780. the place

  1781. in life

  1782. that the

  1783. Lord has

  1784. assigned to

  1785. him

  1786. and to

  1787. which God

  1788. has called

  1789. him.

  1790. This is the

  1791. rule I lay

  1792. down in

  1793. all the

  1794. churches.

  1795. Verse 20

  1796. each one

  1797. should remain

  1798. in the

  1799. situation

  1800. which he

  1801. was in

  1802. when God

  1803. called him.

  1804. Verse 24

  1805. brothers

  1806. each man

  1807. as responsible

  1808. to God

  1809. should remain

  1810. in the

  1811. situation

  1812. God called

  1813. him to.

  1814. So I

  1815. think it's

  1816. quite clear

  1817. isn't it

  1818. if you

  1819. are a

  1820. Christian

  1821. and you

  1822. are married

  1823. remain

  1824. in that

  1825. married

  1826. relationship.

  1827. Now it's

  1828. so easy to

  1829. say those

  1830. words isn't

  1831. it?

  1832. Because you

  1833. may be

  1834. married to

  1835. an unbeliever

  1836. and that

  1837. can be

  1838. very very

  1839. hard.

  1840. you may

  1841. be married

  1842. to a

  1843. husband

  1844. who has

  1845. been

  1846. unfaithful

  1847. and that

  1848. is painful.

  1849. You may

  1850. be married

  1851. to a

  1852. wife who's

  1853. really

  1854. difficult

  1855. and controlling

  1856. and that

  1857. is hard.

  1858. So what

  1859. are you

  1860. telling me

  1861. Johnny to

  1862. say remain

  1863. in that

  1864. married

  1865. relationship?

  1866. Well it's

  1867. easy for you

  1868. you're not

  1869. in my

  1870. situation.

  1871. how are

  1872. we meant

  1873. to remain?

  1874. Well rather

  1875. than be

  1876. looking for

  1877. a way

  1878. out

  1879. so rather

  1880. than running

  1881. in that

  1882. direction

  1883. we need

  1884. to focus

  1885. our eyes

  1886. up to

  1887. God's

  1888. grace

  1889. and his

  1890. grace to

  1891. us in

  1892. our lives.

  1893. First

  1894. he gives

  1895. us grace

  1896. for

  1897. obedience.

  1898. again pay

  1899. attention

  1900. here

  1901. follow

  1902. along

  1903. carefully

  1904. they're

  1905. not

  1906. easy

  1907. verses

  1908. but we'll

  1909. make our

  1910. way

  1911. through.

  1912. So verse

  1913. 18

  1914. was a

  1915. man

  1916. already

  1917. circumcised

  1918. when he

  1919. was called?

  1920. Well he

  1921. should not

  1922. become

  1923. uncircumcised.

  1924. Was a

  1925. man

  1926. uncircumcised

  1927. when he

  1928. was called?

  1929. Well he

  1930. should not

  1931. be

  1932. circumcised.

  1933. Well I

  1934. scratched my

  1935. head many

  1936. times over

  1937. this like

  1938. what's

  1939. circumcision

  1940. got to do

  1941. marriage.

  1942. What's

  1943. all that

  1944. about?

  1945. Well those

  1946. who were

  1947. circumcised

  1948. were Jews.

  1949. Those who

  1950. were uncircumcised

  1951. were Gentiles.

  1952. So he's

  1953. saying well

  1954. just as a

  1955. Jew doesn't

  1956. have to

  1957. change his

  1958. identity to

  1959. become a

  1960. Christian and

  1961. just as a

  1962. Gentile doesn't

  1963. need to

  1964. change his

  1965. identity to

  1966. become a

  1967. Christian.

  1968. Well he's

  1969. saying to

  1970. those who

  1971. are married

  1972. you don't

  1973. need to

  1974. change your

  1975. marriage

  1976. relationship

  1977. to change

  1978. your

  1979. relationship

  1980. with God.

  1981. You're in

  1982. that relationship

  1983. with God.

  1984. So you don't

  1985. need to go

  1986. changing your

  1987. relationship at

  1988. all.

  1989. Verse 19

  1990. circumcision is

  1991. nothing and

  1992. uncircumcision is

  1993. nothing.

  1994. Keeping God's

  1995. commands is

  1996. what counts.

  1997. So the

  1998. important thing

  1999. about our

  2000. marriage

  2001. relationship is

  2002. not trying to

  2003. change it

  2004. it's actually

  2005. about obeying

  2006. God's commands

  2007. in the

  2008. relationship

  2009. because God's

  2010. commands are

  2011. actually a

  2012. gift of

  2013. grace.

  2014. They're not

  2015. here to

  2016. harm us

  2017. or to

  2018. cause

  2019. difficulty

  2020. for us.

  2021. God has

  2022. given us

  2023. the gift

  2024. of marriage

  2025. and he

  2026. knows what's

  2027. right and

  2028. best for

  2029. each one

  2030. of us

  2031. and so he

  2032. gives us

  2033. his commands

  2034. and he

  2035. says walk

  2036. in them

  2037. because they

  2038. will help

  2039. you to

  2040. remain

  2041. whatever

  2042. circumstance

  2043. your marriage

  2044. is.

  2045. You see

  2046. God's

  2047. grace

  2048. gives me

  2049. the patience

  2050. to live

  2051. with my

  2052. unbelieving

  2053. spouse.

  2054. God's

  2055. grace

  2056. gives me

  2057. the ability

  2058. to forgive

  2059. my unfaithful

  2060. husband.

  2061. God's

  2062. grace

  2063. motivates

  2064. me to

  2065. serve

  2066. my wife

  2067. who may

  2068. be difficult.

  2069. You see

  2070. God's

  2071. grace

  2072. works

  2073. in us

  2074. this

  2075. enabling

  2076. to

  2077. obey

  2078. and to

  2079. live out

  2080. what God

  2081. has called

  2082. us to

  2083. be

  2084. so we

  2085. can be

  2086. committed

  2087. and be

  2088. content.

  2089. Verse 20

  2090. So each

  2091. one should

  2092. remain in

  2093. the situation

  2094. he was in

  2095. when God

  2096. called him.

  2097. But there's

  2098. also the

  2099. grace of

  2100. belonging.

  2101. Verse 21

  2102. Again he

  2103. brings another

  2104. illustration.

  2105. He says

  2106. were you a

  2107. slave when

  2108. you were

  2109. called?

  2110. Well don't

  2111. let it

  2112. trouble you

  2113. although if

  2114. you can

  2115. gain your

  2116. freedom do

  2117. so.

  2118. And you're

  2119. thinking well

  2120. again what's

  2121. that got to

  2122. do with

  2123. marriage?

  2124. Well again

  2125. he's saying

  2126. something similar

  2127. he says

  2128. whether you

  2129. were a

  2130. slave

  2131. or whether

  2132. you were a

  2133. freed person

  2134. that's not

  2135. the issue

  2136. guys.

  2137. That's not

  2138. what matters.

  2139. what really

  2140. matters for

  2141. you in

  2142. your marriage

  2143. relationship

  2144. at the end

  2145. of verse 22

  2146. he says

  2147. is that you

  2148. are Christ's

  2149. slave.

  2150. That you

  2151. belong to

  2152. Christ.

  2153. That you're

  2154. in relationship

  2155. with him

  2156. and that you

  2157. belong to

  2158. him.

  2159. So our

  2160. marriage

  2161. relationship

  2162. whatever it

  2163. is like

  2164. and no matter

  2165. how difficult

  2166. it is

  2167. our marriage

  2168. relationship

  2169. is not

  2170. the most

  2171. important

  2172. thing.

  2173. the world

  2174. defines us

  2175. by our

  2176. relationships

  2177. whether I'm

  2178. single or

  2179. whether I'm

  2180. married

  2181. whether I

  2182. have children

  2183. or don't

  2184. have children

  2185. whether I'm

  2186. divorced or

  2187. whether I'm

  2188. not.

  2189. The world

  2190. defines us

  2191. in those

  2192. terms.

  2193. But he's

  2194. saying look

  2195. the most

  2196. important

  2197. thing for

  2198. you is

  2199. that you

  2200. belong to

  2201. Christ.

  2202. Verse 23

  2203. you were

  2204. bought at a

  2205. price.

  2206. Do not

  2207. become slaves

  2208. of men.

  2209. Do not

  2210. become shaped

  2211. by the

  2212. world's

  2213. opinions

  2214. of you.

  2215. Christ

  2216. in his

  2217. love and

  2218. in his

  2219. grace came

  2220. to you and

  2221. died for

  2222. you.

  2223. He loves

  2224. you.

  2225. He treasures

  2226. you.

  2227. He cares

  2228. for you.

  2229. He pursued

  2230. you with a

  2231. faithful

  2232. loyal love.

  2233. He says

  2234. so that

  2235. relationship

  2236. is what

  2237. counts.

  2238. And it's

  2239. only as we

  2240. understand that

  2241. relationship

  2242. with God

  2243. that we

  2244. can continue

  2245. on in our

  2246. relationships

  2247. with each

  2248. other.

  2249. You see

  2250. in his

  2251. grace God

  2252. is eternally

  2253. faithful and

  2254. loyal where

  2255. we have been

  2256. unfaithful to

  2257. him.

  2258. In his

  2259. grace God's

  2260. love does

  2261. not change

  2262. or disappoint

  2263. when we

  2264. disappoint him

  2265. and are not

  2266. faithful in our

  2267. love towards

  2268. him.

  2269. In his

  2270. grace God

  2271. holds nothing

  2272. back but

  2273. continually gives

  2274. to us as we

  2275. need when we

  2276. withhold our

  2277. heart from

  2278. him.

  2279. So do not

  2280. let the

  2281. world define

  2282. us or

  2283. relationships

  2284. define us.

  2285. Rather let

  2286. the relationship

  2287. we have with

  2288. God define

  2289. our marriage

  2290. relationships.

  2291. So verse

  2292. 24,

  2293. brothers and

  2294. sisters,

  2295. each one as

  2296. responsible to

  2297. God should

  2298. remain in

  2299. the situation

  2300. God called

  2301. him to.

  2302. Marriage is

  2303. holy.

  2304. It is a

  2305. gift from

  2306. God to

  2307. his people.

  2308. It should

  2309. be treasured.

  2310. It should be

  2311. nurtured.

  2312. It should be

  2313. cared for.

  2314. Why?

  2315. Because it

  2316. reflects the

  2317. very nature of

  2318. God to those

  2319. around us.

  2320. and as

  2321. people look

  2322. in on us

  2323. they will

  2324. see a

  2325. reflection of

  2326. the beautiful

  2327. relationship between

  2328. God and

  2329. his people.

  2330. It is

  2331. hard.

  2332. And so we

  2333. pray and

  2334. together as a

  2335. church we

  2336. support each

  2337. other and we

  2338. encourage each

  2339. other that we

  2340. may go on

  2341. well as we

  2342. should in our

  2343. married lives.

  2344. Let's just

  2345. take time to

  2346. pray together

  2347. now.
