  1. Read through all of it.

  2. Now, about food sacrificed to idols, we know that we all possess knowledge.

  3. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.

  4. The man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know.

  5. But the man who loves God is known by God.

  6. So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols,

  7. we know that an idol is nothing at all in the world, and that there is no God but one.

  8. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth,

  9. as indeed there are many gods and many lords,

  10. yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live.

  11. And there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

  12. But not everyone knows this.

  13. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat such food they think of it as having been sacrificed to an idol,

  14. and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.

  15. But food does not bring us near to God.

  16. We are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.

  17. Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.

  18. For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge,

  19. eating in an idol's temple,

  20. won't he be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols?

  21. So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge.

  22. When you sin against your brothers in this way,

  23. and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.

  24. Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin,

  25. I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.

  26. Thank you, Connor.

  27. And there's pens and notes being passed around if you'd like to take notes.

  28. And there's a sheet of paper as well.

  29. Just put up your hands and you can get one.

  30. And just by way of introduction this morning,

  31. Chapter 8 starts a new section in 1 Corinthians.

  32. It brings us right to the very end of Chapter 10,

  33. which is all about how we use our freedoms,

  34. how we use our rights.

  35. Previously, from Chapters 5 through to 7,

  36. was all about how we conduct our relationships

  37. and our attitudes towards sex.

  38. And so this week is a new section,

  39. a new theme,

  40. about how we use our rights and our freedoms.

  41. And if you've missed any of the talks at all,

  42. you can find them on the church website.

  43. You can listen back to them.

  44. And if you have any questions

  45. or anything you want to follow up from that,

  46. please do talk to me afterwards.

  47. Thanks, Connor.

  48. Okay, well, let's pray.

  49. And we'll ask for God's help.

  50. Father, you have given us so much in our lives.

  51. Father, you've given us so much in our lives.

  52. You've given us so much in our lives.

  53. We give you thanks for that.

  54. You've given us minds to understand,

  55. to be able to read.

  56. And Father, we need your continued help in our lives,

  57. that what we listen to and what we read from your word,

  58. we would have understanding not just in our heads,

  59. but that it would travel deep into our hearts,

  60. to the very core of our being,

  61. so that it changes us,

  62. so that we become more like you.

  63. So, Father, please help us, we pray.

  64. In Jesus' name.

  65. Amen.

  66. Well, from now on,

  67. you can't eat out.

  68. That means you can't go to any restaurants or hotels,

  69. no more McDonald's, Pizza Hut, or Dino's.

  70. If you get invited to a wedding,

  71. well, you can't attend because food will be served.

  72. If your friends are meeting up for a Christmas dinner,

  73. you'll just have to politely decline.

  74. There's a new rule for the church,

  75. no more eating out.

  76. Well, that might seem very strange to us,

  77. but not if you were a member of Corinth Community Church.

  78. Have a look at verse 1 of chapter 8.

  79. Now, about food sacrificed to idols.

  80. And in particular, look at verse 4.

  81. So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols.

  82. You see, temples and shrines in Corinth

  83. were as common as restaurants and takeaway in Cork.

  84. In fact, they had a double purpose.

  85. Not only were they the places where you made your sacrifices

  86. and where you said your prayers,

  87. it was also the place where you ate your food.

  88. So if there was a birthday celebration,

  89. well, then you'd all head off to the local temple,

  90. which served at your local restaurant.

  91. First, you would make your sacrifice

  92. to seek the blessings of the gods,

  93. that you'd have a good future.

  94. What was left from your sacrifice

  95. would then be served up to everybody to enjoy.

  96. So if you brought a chicken along for the sacrifice,

  97. well, then there was a good chance

  98. that Chicken Maryland would be on the menu.

  99. Or if you fancied a night in and a takeaway,

  100. well, you'd head down to the local shrine.

  101. Perhaps you'd bring a fish to appease the gods,

  102. say your prayers and place your order.

  103. And if you brought a fish,

  104. well, the chances are you'd be going home

  105. with crispy cod and chips.

  106. So we can begin to see how difficult it was

  107. to be a Christian in Corinth.

  108. Because eating out meant eating food

  109. that was used in some kind of pagan sacrifice or ritual.

  110. And it was having an effect on the church family.

  111. There were some in the church family

  112. who were saying,

  113. you can't eat out.

  114. It's wrong.

  115. This is food that's been sacrificed to an idol.

  116. But others in the church were saying,

  117. we can eat what we're like.

  118. We're free.

  119. We belong to God.

  120. Idols don't mean anything to us.

  121. So we can eat what we like.

  122. Look at verse 7.

  123. But not everybody knows this.

  124. Not everybody knows that we're free.

  125. Some people are still so accustomed to idols

  126. that when they eat such food,

  127. they think of it as having been sacrificed to an idol.

  128. And since their conscience is weak,

  129. it is defiled.

  130. But food does not bring us near to God.

  131. We are no worse if we do not eat

  132. and no better if we do.

  133. So you see,

  134. there was a section within the church family

  135. that were saying to everybody,

  136. if I want to go to the temple for dinner with my colleagues,

  137. that's fine.

  138. If I want a kebab at the local shrine,

  139. who cares?

  140. We're free in Christ.

  141. Now the question we have to ask ourselves is,

  142. are we free to do what we like?

  143. You see,

  144. eating food in the local restaurant

  145. mightn't be a problem

  146. in an Irish context.

  147. But there are those who,

  148. as there were in Corinth,

  149. will say,

  150. but you see,

  151. Johnny,

  152. I'm a Christian now.

  153. So I'm free to do what I like

  154. so long as

  155. I do not disobey God's words.

  156. So if I want to go to the pub at the weekend

  157. for a pint,

  158. well,

  159. I'm free to do so.

  160. If I want to meet my college mates

  161. and go to the nightclub,

  162. well,

  163. I can.

  164. If I want to play a match on Sunday morning

  165. instead of going to church,

  166. I will.

  167. If I want to spend my money

  168. on the latest iPhone

  169. or the latest fashion designer jumper,

  170. well,

  171. that's fine for me.

  172. If I want to allow my children

  173. to go trick-or-treating,

  174. that's not a problem.

  175. If I want to go to yoga classes,

  176. read Harry Potter,

  177. watch movies that are 18,

  178. play poker,

  179. you see,

  180. I'm a Christian

  181. and I've been set free.

  182. Now,

  183. I wonder what you think about the list

  184. that I read out.

  185. You see,

  186. none of those things

  187. mentioned

  188. bring us near to God.

  189. Have a look at verse 8.

  190. He says,

  191. food does not bring us near to God.

  192. So,

  193. we're no worse

  194. if we do go to the pub

  195. or the nightclub

  196. or read Harry Potter

  197. or go to yoga classes.

  198. It doesn't matter if I do

  199. or if I don't.

  200. These things don't save us.

  201. They don't make me a Christian.

  202. I'm free

  203. so I can do

  204. what I like.

  205. But,

  206. look at verse 9.

  207. Be careful,

  208. however,

  209. that the exercise

  210. of your freedom

  211. does not become

  212. a stumbling block

  213. to the weak.

  214. Verse 13.

  215. Therefore,

  216. if what I eat

  217. causes my brother

  218. or sister

  219. to fall into sin

  220. or if my attitudes

  221. or actions

  222. to a certain thing

  223. cause somebody else

  224. to fall into sin,

  225. I will never

  226. do that again

  227. so that I will not

  228. cause them to fall.

  229. Do you see,

  230. our Christian life

  231. is not a private

  232. individual exercise.

  233. The choices

  234. and decisions

  235. that I make

  236. about my life

  237. have a profound effect

  238. on other people.

  239. Likewise,

  240. yours to them.

  241. So the places

  242. I go

  243. and the things

  244. that you do

  245. can cause

  246. another believer

  247. to fall into sin.

  248. Have you ever

  249. considered that?

  250. So if I am

  251. a Christian,

  252. I will take

  253. seriously

  254. my choices

  255. and my decisions.

  256. Yes,

  257. we are free,

  258. but we must

  259. use our freedom

  260. to love

  261. others.

  262. First,

  263. let's look at this

  264. in more detail.

  265. We are set free

  266. by the gospel.

  267. Look at verse 1.

  268. Now about food,

  269. sacrifice to idols.

  270. We know that we

  271. all possess

  272. knowledge.

  273. Now that knowledge

  274. he's talking about

  275. there is an

  276. understanding

  277. of the gospel.

  278. So he's saying

  279. to the church,

  280. look,

  281. you know who

  282. God is.

  283. We know

  284. what God

  285. has done.

  286. In fact,

  287. we are reminded

  288. of the gospel

  289. we do know.

  290. Look down

  291. at verse 4.

  292. The gospel

  293. tells us

  294. there is only

  295. one God.

  296. So verse 4,

  297. so then eating

  298. food,

  299. sacrifice to idols,

  300. we know that

  301. an idol

  302. is nothing

  303. at all

  304. in the world

  305. and that

  306. there is no

  307. God

  308. but one.

  309. Now that's

  310. a very basic

  311. understanding

  312. of the gospel.

  313. There are

  314. no other

  315. gods.

  316. Of course

  317. there are idols

  318. that represent

  319. gods.

  320. Look at verse 5.

  321. For even if

  322. there are

  323. so-called gods

  324. whether in

  325. heaven or

  326. on earth

  327. as indeed

  328. there are

  329. many gods

  330. and many

  331. lords

  332. and you

  333. would be

  334. saying

  335. why don't

  336. you look

  337. around in

  338. Corinth?

  339. They're all

  340. over the

  341. place.

  342. But in

  343. reality

  344. he's saying

  345. they're not

  346. gods.

  347. Keep your

  348. finger there

  349. in 1

    1 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  350. Corinthians

  351. chapter 8

  352. and go

  353. back to

  354. Psalm

  355. 115.

  356. Psalm

  357. 115.

  358. Somewhere

  359. to the

  360. left of

  361. the

  362. centre

  363. of

  364. the

  365. Bible.

  366. Psalm

    Psalms 115:2

  367. 115

  368. verse 2.

  369. So do you

  370. see what it

  371. says?

  372. Psalm 115

    Psalms 115:2

  373. verse 2.

  374. Why do the

  375. nations say

  376. where is

  377. their God?

  378. Well our

  379. God is in

  380. heaven.

  381. He does

  382. whatever

  383. pleases

  384. him.

  385. but their

  386. idols are

  387. silver and

  388. gold made

  389. by the

  390. hands of

  391. men.

  392. They have

  393. mouths but

  394. they cannot

  395. speak.

  396. They have

  397. eyes but

  398. they cannot

  399. see.

  400. They have

  401. ears but

  402. they can't

  403. hear.

  404. They have

  405. noses but

  406. they cannot

  407. smell.

  408. They have

  409. hands but

  410. they cannot

  411. feel.

  412. Feet but

  413. they can't

  414. walk.

  415. nor can

  416. they utter

  417. a sound

  418. with their

  419. throats.

  420. Those who

  421. make them

  422. will be

  423. like them

  424. and so

  425. will all

  426. who trust

  427. in them.

  428. You see

  429. in reality

  430. they are

  431. not

  432. gods.

  433. There is

  434. only one

  435. true

  436. God.

  437. Go back

  438. to 1

  439. Corinthians

  440. 8.

  441. Now we

  442. might not

  443. be bowing

  444. down to a

  445. gold

  446. sculpted

  447. Buddha

  448. and we

  449. might not

  450. be praying

  451. to a

  452. wooden

  453. carved

  454. Vishnu

  455. but we

  456. can all

  457. have our

  458. own gods

  459. and we

  460. can turn

  461. people and

  462. things into

  463. gods.

  464. So instead

  465. of trusting

  466. the one

  467. true God

  468. we look to

  469. people and

  470. we look to

  471. things for

  472. our joy and

  473. our peace

  474. and our

  475. security.

  476. But the

  477. gods that

  478. we make

  479. are like

  480. the gods

  481. that we've

  482. just read

  483. about in

  484. Psalm 115

  485. that they'll

  486. disappoint you.

  487. The gods

  488. of our

  489. making can

  490. never save

  491. us.

  492. They only

  493. enslave us.

  494. We only

  495. end up

  496. serving those

  497. gods.

  498. They can

  499. never change

  500. your life

  501. and transform

  502. you.

  503. They will

  504. only destroy

  505. your life

  506. and take

  507. things from

  508. you.

  509. There is

  510. only one

  511. God who

  512. can save.

  513. God who

  514. is this

  515. God?

  516. Well, as

  517. we read

  518. on in

  519. verse 6,

  520. he is the

  521. father who

  522. gives life.

  523. Look at

  524. verse 6.

  525. Yet for

  526. us there

  527. is but

  528. one God,

  529. the

  530. father from

  531. whom all

  532. things came

  533. and for

  534. whom we

  535. live.

  536. So our

  537. God is the

  538. creator God

  539. of all of

  540. life.

  541. the winds

  542. and the

  543. rains of

  544. hurricane

  545. Desmond

  546. that we've

  547. been

  548. experiencing.

  549. God is

  550. the creator

  551. and the

  552. ruler of

  553. all that

  554. happens.

  555. He sustains

  556. all things

  557. and he

  558. provides for

  559. all things.

  560. There is

  561. no life

  562. outside of

  563. God.

  564. But this

  565. God is not

  566. distant and

  567. removed and

  568. uninterested.

  569. Do you see

  570. what it says

  571. in verse 6?

  572. He is the

  573. father.

  574. So this

  575. is a God

  576. we can know

  577. personally.

  578. relationally

  579. and intimately.

  580. He is the

  581. father God

  582. unlike the

  583. idols that

  584. we read

  585. about who

  586. loves us

  587. and who

  588. can speak

  589. to us

  590. through his

  591. word.

  592. Who listens

  593. to us when

  594. we cry out

  595. to him and

  596. who answers

  597. us when

  598. we call out

  599. to him.

  600. He is the

  601. God who

  602. not only

  603. made the

  604. universe but

  605. actually came

  606. as a person

  607. and walked

  608. on planet

  609. earth.

  610. God

  611. is the

  612. God who

  613. gives life.

  614. He is the

  615. son who

  616. redeems

  617. life.

  618. Look at the

  619. rest of

  620. verse 6.

  621. And there

  622. is but

  623. one Lord

  624. Jesus

  625. Christ

  626. through whom

  627. all things

  628. came

  629. and through

  630. whom

  631. we live.

  632. God

  633. came to

  634. us in

  635. a person

  636. in the

  637. person of

  638. Jesus

  639. Christ.

  640. He came

  641. so that

  642. we could

  643. know him.

  644. But remember

  645. the reason

  646. why he

  647. came.

  648. It came

  649. for a

  650. purpose.

  651. Jesus

  652. came to

  653. redeem us.

  654. Look what

  655. it says in

  656. verse 6.

  657. The one

  658. through whom

  659. we live.

  660. He is the

  661. one who

  662. gives us

  663. true life.

  664. He redeems

  665. us from the

  666. emptiness and

  667. the hopelessness

  668. of our false

  669. gods and

  670. our made

  671. up religions.

  672. The ones

  673. that we

  674. seek to

  675. try and

  676. perform to.

  677. Christ sets

  678. us free

  679. from all

  680. of that.

  681. He alone

  682. is the

  683. one who

  684. saves us.

  685. He alone

  686. is the

  687. one who

  688. will satisfy

  689. us completely.

  690. This is

  691. the gospel

  692. that we

  693. know to

  694. be true.

  695. God

  696. sets us

  697. free from

  698. the gods

  699. of our

  700. own making

  701. which can

  702. never save

  703. us.

  704. And he

  705. brings us

  706. into a

  707. relationship

  708. with God

  709. the Father

  710. who is

  711. the source

  712. of all

  713. life who

  714. speaks to

  715. us,

  716. who talks

  717. to us,

  718. and who

  719. listens to

  720. us.

  721. So because

  722. of my

  723. trust in

  724. this God,

  725. I have

  726. been set

  727. free.

  728. So I'm

  729. free to

  730. do as I

  731. please,

  732. so long

  733. as I do

  734. not disobey

  735. God's

  736. word.

  737. I'm

  738. no longer

  739. trying to

  740. perform

  741. by my

  742. actions

  743. and by

  744. the

  745. things I

  746. say.

  747. I've

  748. been

  749. accepted

  750. by

  751. Christ.

  752. So we

  753. are free

  754. to do

  755. what we

  756. like,

  757. aren't

  758. we?

  759. Well,

  760. not

  761. exactly.

  762. We are

  763. free by

  764. the

  765. gospel,

  766. but we've

  767. been set

  768. free for a

  769. purpose,

  770. set free

  771. to love.

  772. You see,

  773. the sign

  774. or the

  775. evidence

  776. that we

  777. have been

  778. set free

  779. by the

  780. gospel is

  781. we will

  782. love

  783. others.

  784. So if

  785. you're here

  786. this morning,

  787. you're

  788. wondering,

  789. have I

  790. been set

  791. free?

  792. Well,

  793. the evidence

  794. will be

  795. love in

  796. your life.

  797. Look at

  798. chapter 8,

  799. verse 1.

  800. Now about

  801. food sacrificed

  802. to idols,

  803. we know

  804. that we all

  805. possess

  806. knowledge.

  807. So he

  808. says,

  809. we know

  810. about the

  811. gospel,

  812. we know

  813. what it's

  814. all about,

  815. but here's

  816. the catch,

  817. knowledge

  818. about

  819. something

  820. is not

  821. enough.

  822. Look at

  823. the rest

  824. of verse

  825. 1.

  826. Because

  827. knowledge

  828. puffs

  829. up,

  830. but love

  831. builds

  832. up.

  833. The

  834. person

  835. thinks

  836. he knows

  837. something,

  838. does not

  839. yet know

  840. as he

  841. ought to

  842. know.

  843. Do you

  844. see,

  845. knowing

  846. God

  847. intellectually

  848. is not

  849. the same

  850. as knowing

  851. God

  852. relationally.

  853. I can

  854. know all

  855. about God.

  856. I can

  857. explain who

  858. the Father

  859. is.

  860. I can

  861. tell you

  862. perfectly

  863. clearly

  864. what Jesus

  865. did,

  866. but never

  867. believe and

  868. trust God.

  869. I could

  870. have a degree

  871. and a PhD

  872. in theology,

  873. but never

  874. be changed

  875. and transformed

  876. by that

  877. knowledge.

  878. You see,

  879. to know

  880. about God,

  881. to know

  882. about the

  883. scriptures,

  884. to have

  885. all the

  886. knowledge and

  887. understanding

  888. of what the

  889. Bible has

  890. to say,

  891. is not

  892. the same

  893. as being

  894. known

  895. by God.

  896. Look at

  897. verse 3.

  898. But the man

  899. who loves

  900. God is

  901. known by

  902. God.

  903. to be

  904. known by

  905. God is

  906. to trust

  907. him,

  908. is to

  909. live in

  910. that vibrant

  911. relationship

  912. with God,

  913. to know

  914. him personally.

  915. So the

  916. sign that

  917. I truly

  918. know God,

  919. the evidence

  920. that I have

  921. been set

  922. free by

  923. the gospel

  924. is that I

  925. am in a

  926. vibrant

  927. living

  928. relationship

  929. with God

  930. and the

  931. outworkings

  932. of that

  933. is I

  934. will be

  935. loving

  936. other

  937. people.

  938. You see,

  939. knowledge by

  940. itself

  941. is

  942. destructive.

  943. All

  944. knowledge

  945. does is

  946. puff up.

  947. Do you

  948. see what it

  949. says in

  950. verse 1?

  951. Knowledge

  952. puffs up.

  953. Now we're

  954. not anti-knowledge.

  955. Knowledge is

  956. good.

  957. We encourage

  958. people to

  959. go to

  960. NBC.

  961. We encourage

  962. people to

  963. come on

  964. Wednesdays and

  965. Sundays to

  966. learn in our

  967. understanding of

  968. who God

  969. is.

  970. But if all

  971. that understanding

  972. is is just

  973. giving us

  974. information and

  975. clever

  976. arguments,

  977. then it's

  978. nothing.

  979. All it

  980. will do is

  981. puff you

  982. up.

  983. You'll just

  984. wander around

  985. with a

  986. great big

  987. head going

  988. look at

  989. all these

  990. things that

  991. I know.

  992. You see,

  993. with that

  994. knowledge,

  995. I might be

  996. able to

  997. explain to

  998. somebody why

  999. I can drink

  1000. and smoke

  1001. and go to

  1002. yoga classes

  1003. and how the

  1004. Bible talks

  1005. about those

  1006. things.

  1007. None of

  1008. those things

  1009. actually

  1010. contradict

  1011. God's

  1012. words,

  1013. so I'm

  1014. free to

  1015. do them.

  1016. But that's

  1017. just knowledge

  1018. of the

  1019. head,

  1020. isn't it?

  1021. It's not

  1022. taking other

  1023. people into

  1024. consideration and

  1025. how my

  1026. actions may

  1027. affect other

  1028. people.

  1029. It's a

  1030. knowledge that

  1031. does not

  1032. love.

  1033. Knowledge just

  1034. simply puffs

  1035. up.

  1036. Instead of

  1037. knowledge puffing

  1038. up, we want

  1039. love that

  1040. builds up.

  1041. That's what the

  1042. rest of verse 1

  1043. says, knowledge

  1044. puffs up, but

  1045. love builds

  1046. up.

  1047. You see, if we

  1048. know God

  1049. relationally, if

  1050. the gospel has

  1051. set me free,

  1052. then I will

  1053. use my

  1054. knowledge to

  1055. build other

  1056. people up.

  1057. In other

  1058. words, I will

  1059. seek to help

  1060. people understand

  1061. and apply the

  1062. gospel to their

  1063. lives and try

  1064. and help them

  1065. work through

  1066. what the

  1067. scripture says

  1068. about a

  1069. certain matter.

  1070. other.

  1071. But I will

  1072. be also

  1073. taking into

  1074. consideration

  1075. how my

  1076. choices and

  1077. how my

  1078. decisions will

  1079. affect another

  1080. person.

  1081. So instead of

  1082. thinking, oh,

  1083. the gospel has

  1084. freed me, I

  1085. can do what I

  1086. want, I will

  1087. see that the

  1088. gospel actually

  1089. frees me to

  1090. love what is

  1091. best for other

  1092. people.

  1093. My choices and

  1094. decisions are not

  1095. about me, but

  1096. how I can build

  1097. other people up.

  1098. So what does

  1099. all this look

  1100. like in

  1101. practice?

  1102. Yes, we've

  1103. been set free

  1104. by the gospel,

  1105. but that

  1106. gospel sets us

  1107. free to

  1108. intentionally love

  1109. others, to

  1110. look out for

  1111. them.

  1112. So what will

  1113. it look like in

  1114. practice?

  1115. Well, third,

  1116. we're set free

  1117. to protect the

  1118. weak.

  1119. So we need to

  1120. understand who

  1121. is the weak

  1122. person among

  1123. us.

  1124. First, our

  1125. weaker brother

  1126. or sister.

  1127. Look at verse

  1128. nine.

  1129. So he says,

  1130. be careful,

  1131. however, that

  1132. the exercise of

  1133. your freedom

  1134. does not become

  1135. a stumbling

  1136. block to the

  1137. weak.

  1138. Well, who are

  1139. the weak that

  1140. that's being

  1141. talked about?

  1142. Well, read

  1143. on, verse

  1144. 10.

  1145. For if

  1146. anyone with

  1147. a weak

  1148. conscience

  1149. sees you

  1150. who have

  1151. this knowledge

  1152. eating in

  1153. an idol's

  1154. temple,

  1155. won't he

  1156. be emboldened

  1157. or encouraged

  1158. to eat what

  1159. has been

  1160. sacrificed to

  1161. idols?

  1162. them.

  1163. So, do

  1164. you see how

  1165. our actions

  1166. and our

  1167. behaviours can

  1168. affect other

  1169. people?

  1170. We could

  1171. imagine two

  1172. Christians in

  1173. the church in

  1174. Corinth.

  1175. We'll call

  1176. them Lucas

  1177. and Stephanas.

  1178. And Lucas

  1179. gives Stephanas

  1180. an invite saying,

  1181. I'll meet you

  1182. down at the

  1183. local shrine

  1184. for a burger.

  1185. Well, Stephanas

  1186. has been a

  1187. Christian for a

  1188. long time.

  1189. On the other

  1190. hand, Lucas

  1191. not, and

  1192. he's kind of a

  1193. bit cautious

  1194. about going

  1195. down to the

  1196. local shrine

  1197. because the

  1198. last time he

  1199. was down

  1200. there he

  1201. was offering

  1202. food to

  1203. his God.

  1204. He says,

  1205. I can't

  1206. go.

  1207. I think it

  1208. will give the

  1209. wrong impression

  1210. to people.

  1211. The other one

  1212. gets a bit

  1213. annoyed.

  1214. He says,

  1215. come on,

  1216. we're not

  1217. sacrificing,

  1218. we're just

  1219. having a bit

  1220. of food

  1221. together.

  1222. What's the

  1223. big deal?

  1224. Don't be so

  1225. boring.

  1226. Don't you

  1227. know that

  1228. you've been

  1229. saved by

  1230. grace?

  1231. These idols

  1232. aren't real

  1233. anyway.

  1234. And after

  1235. much persuasion

  1236. and against

  1237. his conscience,

  1238. he gives in

  1239. and he goes

  1240. along with

  1241. his friends.

  1242. Three weeks

  1243. later,

  1244. Lucas is

  1245. horrified to

  1246. discover that

  1247. Stephanas is no

  1248. longer going

  1249. to church,

  1250. but he's

  1251. back sacrificing

  1252. to his

  1253. idols.

  1254. Look at

  1255. verse 11.

  1256. So this

  1257. weak brother

  1258. for whom

  1259. Christ died

  1260. is destroyed

  1261. by your

  1262. knowledge.

  1263. Now that's

  1264. really serious,

  1265. isn't it?

  1266. We may have

  1267. knowledge and

  1268. understanding about

  1269. the grace of

  1270. God and all

  1271. that he's done

  1272. for us and

  1273. how he set

  1274. us free,

  1275. but if we

  1276. use that

  1277. knowledge in

  1278. a wrong way

  1279. to upset

  1280. somebody who

  1281. hasn't quite

  1282. understood the

  1283. gospel of

  1284. freedom,

  1285. that's a

  1286. serious matter.

  1287. Let me give

  1288. a few examples.

  1289. The lads from

  1290. church are all

  1291. heading into

  1292. town to

  1293. celebrate the

  1294. end of their

  1295. Christmas exams.

  1296. They persuade

  1297. Gary, he's a

  1298. new guy at the

  1299. CU, to go

  1300. along with

  1301. them.

  1302. They've had a

  1303. great night

  1304. out.

  1305. The problem

  1306. is, well,

  1307. Gary stopped

  1308. going to the

  1309. CU.

  1310. He's back

  1311. in drinking

  1312. with his

  1313. buddies.

  1314. The girls

  1315. have decided

  1316. to go for a

  1317. night out to

  1318. the nightclub,

  1319. just for a

  1320. bit of

  1321. Christmas crack.

  1322. Some are a

  1323. bit reluctant

  1324. and not so

  1325. sure, but

  1326. after a little

  1327. bit of peer

  1328. pressure, come

  1329. on, it's

  1330. just this

  1331. once they

  1332. all decide

  1333. to go.

  1334. The problem

  1335. is, Sharon,

  1336. who really

  1337. didn't want to

  1338. go in the

  1339. first place,

  1340. feels really

  1341. guilty about

  1342. going and

  1343. has stopped

  1344. reading her

  1345. Bible and

  1346. is struggling.

  1347. So, can

  1348. we begin to

  1349. see how our

  1350. choices and

  1351. decisions have

  1352. a profound

  1353. effect on our

  1354. brothers and

  1355. sisters in

  1356. Christ?

  1357. Using our

  1358. freedom in

  1359. Christ can

  1360. actually destroy

  1361. my family in

  1362. Christ.

  1363. It's a

  1364. serious matter.

  1365. We need to

  1366. love the

  1367. weak, not

  1368. destroy the

  1369. weak.

  1370. Look at

  1371. verse 12.

  1372. When you

  1373. sin against

  1374. your brothers

  1375. and sisters in

  1376. this way and

  1377. wound their

  1378. weak conscience,

  1379. you sin

  1380. against Christ.

  1381. You see, while

  1382. going to the

  1383. pub might not

  1384. be wrong,

  1385. while going

  1386. to a night

  1387. club might

  1388. not be against

  1389. God's word,

  1390. but if by my

  1391. choices and

  1392. decisions I

  1393. cause another

  1394. believer to go

  1395. against their

  1396. conscience,

  1397. it is sinful.

  1398. It says in

  1399. verse 12 that

  1400. we actually sin

  1401. against Christ.

  1402. Christ.

  1403. So let's

  1404. try and work

  1405. this through in

  1406. a few more

  1407. applications.

  1408. If I go to

  1409. play a match

  1410. on a Sunday,

  1411. or spend my

  1412. morning studying

  1413. for exams

  1414. instead of

  1415. going to

  1416. church because

  1417. I'm free,

  1418. if I attend

  1419. the local yoga

  1420. class, or if I

  1421. decide to watch

  1422. an 18 plus

  1423. movie, or if I

  1424. decide that we

  1425. can serve meal

  1426. at dinner time

  1427. in our home,

  1428. if by my

  1429. attitude and

  1430. my actions I

  1431. encourage somebody

  1432. else to do the

  1433. same, and that

  1434. causes them to

  1435. go against their

  1436. conscience, we

  1437. are in effect

  1438. causing them to

  1439. go against

  1440. Christ.

  1441. If I feel that

  1442. I can be

  1443. involved in this

  1444. church, and

  1445. well I'm a

  1446. Christian and I'm

  1447. free and I can

  1448. go and attend

  1449. other churches

  1450. when I like,

  1451. if by my

  1452. actions I

  1453. cause others

  1454. to do the

  1455. same and it

  1456. goes against

  1457. their conscience,

  1458. rather than

  1459. building them

  1460. up in their

  1461. faith, I'm

  1462. actually tripping

  1463. them up in

  1464. their faith.

  1465. All our

  1466. choices and

  1467. all our

  1468. decisions that

  1469. we make have

  1470. a profound

  1471. effect on the

  1472. family of

  1473. believers.

  1474. verse 13,

  1475. therefore, if

  1476. what I eat

  1477. causes my

  1478. brother or

  1479. sister to

  1480. fall into

  1481. sin, I

  1482. will never

  1483. eat meat

  1484. again, so

  1485. that I will

  1486. not cause

  1487. him to

  1488. fall.

  1489. Instead of

  1490. saying, yes,

  1491. I can do

  1492. this, or my

  1493. conscience allows

  1494. me to do

  1495. that, I

  1496. will learn

  1497. to say no

  1498. because I

  1499. do not

  1500. want to

  1501. cause my

  1502. brother or

  1503. sister to

  1504. sin and

  1505. to fall.

  1506. You see, the

  1507. church is not

  1508. about me and

  1509. my private

  1510. individual choice

  1511. and what I'm

  1512. free to do

  1513. whenever I

  1514. like.

  1515. Church is a

  1516. family and

  1517. we do what's

  1518. best for the

  1519. family.

  1520. We make

  1521. choices and

  1522. decisions about

  1523. not how is

  1524. it going to

  1525. help me, but

  1526. how is it

  1527. going to

  1528. help the

  1529. other person.

  1530. And those

  1531. who know the

  1532. freedom of

  1533. the gospel,

  1534. those who

  1535. have been

  1536. truly changed

  1537. and transformed

  1538. by God's

  1539. grace, will

  1540. be incredibly

  1541. free.

  1542. But that

  1543. freedom is

  1544. always used

  1545. to serve

  1546. others and

  1547. to build

  1548. each other

  1549. up in

  1550. love.

  1551. Therefore,

  1552. look at

  1553. verse 13.

  1554. If what I

  1555. do or

  1556. if what I

  1557. say causes

  1558. my brother

  1559. or sister to

  1560. fall into

  1561. sin, I

  1562. will never

  1563. do those

  1564. things again

  1565. so that I

  1566. will not

  1567. cause them

  1568. to fall.

  1569. We have

  1570. been set

  1571. free in

  1572. Christ, but

  1573. we use our

  1574. freedom to

  1575. build each

  1576. other up

  1577. in love.

  1578. Let's pray

  1579. together.

  1580. Let's pray

  1581. together.

  1582. Let's pray

  1583. together.

  1584. Let's pray

  1585. together.

  1586. Let's pray

  1587. together.

  1588. Let's pray

  1589. together.

  1590. Let's pray

  1591. together.
