  1. Chapter 9, and it's the whole of the chapter, and it begins on page 1150.

  2. So 1 Corinthians, chapter 9, beginning at verse 1.

    1 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

  3. Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord?

  4. Are you not the result of my work in the Lord?

  5. Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you.

  6. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

  7. This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me.

  8. Don't we have the right to food and drink?

  9. Don't we have the right to take a believing wife along with us,

  10. as do the other apostles and the Lord's brothers and Cephas?

  11. Or is it only I and Barnabas who must work for a living?

  12. Who serves as a soldier at his own expense?

  13. Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its grapes?

  14. Who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk?

  15. Do I say this merely from a human point of view?

  16. Doesn't the law say the same thing?

  17. For it is written in the law of Moses,

  18. Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.

  19. Is it about oxen that God is concerned?

  20. Surely he says this for us, doesn't he?

  21. Yes, this was written for us,

  22. because when the ploughman ploughs and the thresher threshes,

  23. they ought to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest.

  24. If we have sown spiritual seed among you,

  25. is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?

  26. If others have this right of support from you,

  27. shouldn't we have it all the more?

  28. But we did not use this right.

  29. On the contrary, we put up with anything

  30. rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.

  31. Don't you know that those who work in the temple

  32. get their food from the temple,

  33. and those who serve at the altar

  34. share in what is offered on the altar?

  35. In the same way, the Lord has commanded

  36. that those who preach the gospel

  37. should receive their living from the gospel.

  38. But I have not used any of these rights,

  39. and I am not writing this in the hope

  40. that you will do such things for me.

  41. I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of this boast.

  42. Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast,

  43. for I am compelled to preach.

  44. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel.

  45. If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward.

  46. If not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me.

  47. What then is my reward?

  48. Just this, that in preaching the gospel,

  49. I may offer it free of charge,

  50. and so not make use of my rights in preaching it.

  51. Though I am free and belong to no man,

  52. I make myself a slave to everyone,

  53. to win as many as possible.

  54. To the Jews I became like a Jew,

  55. to win the Jews.

  56. To those under the law,

  57. I became like one under the law,

  58. though I myself am not under the law,

  59. so as to win those under the law.

  60. To those not having the law,

  61. I became like one not having the law.

  62. Though I am not free from God's law,

  63. but I am under Christ's law,

  64. so as to win those not having the law.

  65. To the weak I became weak,

  66. to win all the weak.

  67. I have become all things to all men,

  68. so that by all possible means I might save some.

  69. I do all this for the sake of the gospel,

  70. that I may share in its blessings.

  71. Do you not know that in a race,

  72. all the runners run,

  73. but only one gets the prize?

  74. Run in such a way as to get the prize.

  75. Everyone who competes in the games

  76. goes into strict training.

  77. They do it to get a crown that will not last,

  78. but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

  79. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly.

  80. I do not fight like a man beating the air.

  81. No, I beat my body and make it my slave,

  82. so that after I have preached to others,

  83. I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

  84. Thanks very much, Chris.

  85. Well, let's pray.

  86. Our Father God, we thank you for your word.

  87. We thank you for its truth.

  88. We thank you that it is a truth and a word

  89. that brings life,

  90. that saves and transforms.

  91. And so we pray that as we hear your word,

  92. as we look at it together,

  93. that you would do that work amongst us

  94. and through us.

  95. Father, help us that we would be humble before you,

  96. that we would know what it is to surrender our rights

  97. so that you are Lord

  98. over every area of our life.

  99. Please help us then, we pray.

  100. In Jesus' name, amen.

  101. Amen.

  102. We declare the rights of the people of Ireland

  103. to the ownership of Ireland

  104. and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies

  105. to be sovereign and indefeasible.

  106. In every generation,

  107. the Irish people have asserted their right

  108. to national freedom and sovereignty,

  109. standing on that fundamental right.

  110. The Republic guarantees religious and civil liberty,

  111. equal rights and equal opportunities

  112. to all its citizens,

  113. and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness

  114. and prosperity of the whole nation

  115. and all its parts,

  116. cherishing all of the children of the nation equally.

  117. Recognize those words?

  118. So reads the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic.

  119. We should never forget the privilege it is

  120. to live in a nation where human rights

  121. are respected and cherished.

  122. The right to liberty and security,

  123. the right to equality and dignity,

  124. to education and health.

  125. We live in a culture and a society

  126. where everybody knows their rights

  127. and rights are precious.

  128. But if we are Christians,

  129. we are called to forego our rights

  130. to serve the gospel.

  131. In a society where rights are everything,

  132. we are to let go of our rights.

  133. If anyone does have rights,

  134. it's the Apostle Paul.

  135. Look at verse 1.

  136. Am I not free?

  137. Am I not an apostle?

  138. Remember, he's saying,

  139. I, as an apostle,

  140. God has sent me to preach the good news.

  141. He goes on,

  142. have I not seen our Lord?

  143. Remember that on my way to Damascus,

  144. the risen Lord Jesus

  145. appeared to me and called me

  146. and commissioned me

  147. to go and preach.

  148. Are you not the result of my work in the Lord?

  149. Didn't I come to you in Corinth

  150. and stay with you

  151. for almost two years

  152. explaining and teaching

  153. and living my life among you

  154. so that you could understand

  155. who Jesus is?

  156. I have been chosen.

  157. I have been called.

  158. I have been commissioned by God

  159. to go and proclaim the good news of Jesus.

  160. And because of that,

  161. I have rights.

  162. That right, of course,

  163. was the right of financial support.

  164. Look at verse 3.

  165. This is my defence to those

  166. who sit in judgment on me,

  167. those who say I shouldn't have anything.

  168. Verse 4.

  169. Don't we have the right

  170. to food and drink?

  171. Don't we have the right

  172. to take a believing wife along with us

  173. as do the other apostles?

  174. Or is it only I and Barnabas

  175. who must work for a living?

  176. Who serves as a soldier

  177. at his own expense?

  178. Or who plants a vineyard

  179. and can't eat of its grapes?

  180. Or who tends a flock

  181. and can't drink of its milk?

  182. Look.

  183. Everyone who works

  184. has the right to basic support

  185. so that they can eat and drink

  186. and have somewhere to sleep.

  187. In fact,

  188. God commands it.

  189. Look at verse 9.

  190. For it is written in the law of Moses

  191. in the Old Testament,

  192. this comes from Deuteronomy,

  193. do not muzzle an ox

  194. while it is treading out the grain.

  195. Is it about oxen that God is concerned?

  196. No.

  197. No.

  198. Surely he says this for us,

  199. doesn't he?

  200. If an ox who is out working

  201. has the right,

  202. a mere animal,

  203. has the right to be looked after,

  204. fed and watered,

  205. well, don't you think

  206. that God's servant,

  207. his people,

  208. have the right

  209. to be looked after?

  210. Verse 10.

  211. Surely he says this for us,

  212. doesn't he?

  213. Yes, this was written for us.

  214. Verse 12.

  215. If others have this right of support from you,

  216. shouldn't we have it all the more?

  217. So we do have rights.

  218. But there is something more important than rights.

  219. Look at the rest of verse 12.

  220. Look what he says.

  221. But we did not use this right.

  222. On the contrary,

  223. we put up with anything

  224. rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.

  225. You see,

  226. if we are Christians,

  227. our rights

  228. do not come before the gospel.

  229. Rather,

  230. the gospel

  231. always comes before

  232. our rights.

  233. You see,

  234. rights do not build

  235. or plant churches.

  236. Our rights

  237. do not save people.

  238. It is only the gospel

  239. that will save someone.

  240. Yes,

  241. we do have rights,

  242. as he goes on to tell us again

  243. in verse 14.

  244. In the same way,

  245. the Lord has commanded

  246. that those who preach the gospel

  247. should receive their living

  248. from the gospel.

  249. But I have not used

  250. any of these rights.

  251. The gospel,

  252. the good news of Christ,

  253. takes priority

  254. over our rights.

  255. So what will this look like

  256. in practice?

  257. Well,

  258. we're going to look at two big ideas.

  259. The first is this.

  260. First,

  261. we surrender

  262. our rights

  263. for the gospel.

  264. We surrender

  265. our rights

  266. for the gospel.

  267. Go back to the second part

  268. of verse 12 again.

  269. He says,

  270. we did not use

  271. this right.

  272. On the contrary,

  273. we put up with anything.

  274. We'd go through anything

  275. rather than hinder

  276. the gospel of Christ.

  277. You see,

  278. when Paul arrived

  279. in Corinth,

  280. he had the right

  281. to look for support,

  282. but he didn't use

  283. that right.

  284. Instead,

  285. he worked for a living.

  286. In Acts 18,

  287. which records

  288. Paul's visit

  289. to Corinth,

  290. he tells us

  291. that he used

  292. his trade

  293. as a tent maker

  294. to earn a living.

  295. So when he arrived,

  296. he went about

  297. fixing tents

  298. and probably

  299. other leather items

  300. like sandals

  301. and boots

  302. and all that sort of thing.

  303. A little workshop

  304. he would have set up.

  305. And then on the Sabbath,

  306. towards the end

  307. of the week,

  308. he would go into

  309. the synagogue

  310. to preach

  311. and persuade

  312. who Jesus was.

  313. Tent making

  314. would not get you rich.

  315. It was a menial task,

  316. exhausting,

  317. hard work

  318. involving long hours

  319. for little pay.

  320. But he says,

  321. we will put up

  322. with anything.

  323. We'll go through

  324. any kind of life.

  325. The reason?

  326. To be able to offer

  327. the gospel

  328. free of charge.

  329. Have a look at verse 18.

  330. What then is my reward?

  331. What do I get

  332. from being a tent maker,

  333. from putting myself

  334. through all this hard work

  335. so that I can preach?

  336. What's my reward?

  337. Just this,

  338. that in preaching

  339. the gospel,

  340. I may offer it

  341. free of charge

  342. and so do not

  343. make use of my rights

  344. in preaching it.

  345. You see,

  346. he does not want

  347. finances

  348. to be an obstacle

  349. to people

  350. hearing the good news

  351. of Jesus.

  352. In fact,

  353. he says he will

  354. literally pay

  355. for the right

  356. to preach.

  357. He will cover

  358. all his expenses

  359. so that the gospel

  360. comes free.

  361. That's why we said

  362. when we took up

  363. a collection

  364. this morning,

  365. we say

  366. we don't

  367. have to give.

  368. we don't want

  369. people to pay

  370. for the gospel.

  371. That's why

  372. as a church

  373. we've taken

  374. the decision

  375. not to charge

  376. for things

  377. like the rock

  378. or Christianity

  379. Explored

  380. or Polo

  381. or Sunday School

  382. or anything else.

  383. Why?

  384. So that it is

  385. free

  386. to people.

  387. But not only

  388. do we want

  389. to offer it

  390. free of charge,

  391. we want

  392. to live lives

  393. that actually

  394. reflect the

  395. content

  396. of this message.

  397. We are to

  398. live the gospel,

  399. not just speak it,

  400. but live it.

  401. You see,

  402. the gospel,

  403. the good news

  404. about Jesus

  405. is God's

  406. free

  407. gift

  408. of salvation.

  409. It's all

  410. of grace,

  411. which means

  412. it doesn't

  413. cost us

  414. anything.

  415. It's all

  416. been achieved

  417. and done

  418. by Jesus.

  419. Isn't that

  420. what we're

  421. thinking about

  422. and looking

  423. forward to

  424. as we come

  425. to Christmas?

  426. Think about

  427. what the gospel

  428. is,

  429. what that message

  430. is,

  431. what we've

  432. been singing

  433. about this

  434. morning.

  435. Jesus

  436. is God

  437. who gave

  438. up his

  439. rights

  440. and came

  441. to serve

  442. us,

  443. who had

  444. everything

  445. but did

  446. not consider

  447. equality

  448. with God

  449. something to

  450. be grasped

  451. and held

  452. on to,

  453. but came

  454. down to

  455. be a

  456. baby

  457. born in

  458. a manger.

  459. The creator

  460. of the universe

  461. who spoke

  462. the world

  463. into existence,

  464. who owns

  465. everything,

  466. became a

  467. slave

  468. for you

  469. and for me

  470. and who

  471. identified

  472. with us

  473. in such

  474. a way

  475. that the

  476. perfect one

  477. who lived

  478. perfectly

  479. and was

  480. without sin

  481. came and

  482. took my

  483. sin and

  484. your sin

  485. on himself

  486. and died

  487. in my

  488. place

  489. and forgave

  490. me.

  491. Jesus

  492. suffered

  493. what I

  494. deserve

  495. so that I

  496. may gain

  497. new and

  498. eternal life.

  499. That is the

  500. message of

  501. Christmas.

  502. Christmas.

  503. And what

  504. does it cost

  505. me and

  506. what does

  507. it cost

  508. you?

  509. Nothing.

  510. What did

  511. I contribute

  512. to my

  513. salvation?

  514. Nothing.

  515. Jesus has

  516. done it all

  517. for me.

  518. He took

  519. the initiative.

  520. He intervened

  521. into my life.

  522. He came

  523. down to me.

  524. So Paul

  525. is not

  526. only offering

  527. the gospel

  528. free of

  529. charge.

  530. He wants

  531. his life

  532. to illustrate

  533. this free

  534. gospel.

  535. His very

  536. life reflects

  537. that this

  538. gospel is

  539. free.

  540. That it's

  541. all been

  542. paid for.

  543. It's all

  544. been done

  545. for you.

  546. Paul is

  547. willing to

  548. take up

  549. the cost

  550. that is

  551. involved.

  552. He's willing

  553. to go

  554. through a

  555. suffering

  556. hard life

  557. as a

  558. tent maker.

  559. He will

  560. endure what

  561. he has

  562. to endure

  563. so that

  564. people can

  565. see that

  566. the good

  567. news of

  568. Jesus is

  569. free.

  570. Someone

  571. has to

  572. pay.

  573. So Paul

  574. says I

  575. will pay

  576. with my

  577. life.

  578. Just like

  579. the Lord

  580. Jesus

  581. surrendered

  582. his rights

  583. and came

  584. down to

  585. you and

  586. to me,

  587. so Paul

  588. says I

  589. will surrender

  590. my rights

  591. so that

  592. you can

  593. see visibly

  594. an illustration

  595. and demonstration

  596. of what

  597. the gospel

  598. is like.

  599. Look at

  600. my life.

  601. I will

  602. pay that

  603. cost for

  604. you.

  605. So are

  606. we

  607. surrendering

  608. our rights

  609. for the

  610. gospel?

  611. Let's give

  612. two examples

  613. or two

  614. applications

  615. of what

  616. this might

  617. look like.

  618. first it

  619. might mean

  620. surrendering

  621. my right

  622. to spend

  623. my money

  624. on things

  625. that I

  626. want.

  627. And as

  628. we surrender

  629. that right

  630. instead give

  631. that money

  632. to those

  633. who are

  634. preaching

  635. the gospel.

  636. For

  637. example

  638. the work

  639. of Ifees

  640. or Craig

  641. who is

  642. heading up

  643. the work

  644. in Kinsale

  645. or those

  646. who are

  647. reaching into

  648. North Korea

  649. or those

  650. that we've

  651. just had a

  652. look at

  653. from Church

  654. and Chains

  655. in Syria

  656. and Iraq.

  657. People who

  658. are on the

  659. borderlines

  660. of persecution

  661. evangelists

  662. and pastors

  663. who are

  664. reaching into

  665. the unreached

  666. areas of

  667. the world

  668. through Asia

  669. Link.

  670. Yes we

  671. all have

  672. rights.

  673. Yes we're

  674. going to

  675. use the

  676. Christmas

  677. season to

  678. spend my

  679. money on

  680. things that

  681. I don't

  682. need.

  683. But that

  684. right is

  685. to be

  686. surrendered so

  687. that we

  688. can use

  689. what we

  690. have to

  691. offer the

  692. gospel free

  693. of charge.

  694. surrendering

  695. our rights.

  696. Second it

  697. may mean

  698. surrendering

  699. my right

  700. to use

  701. my time

  702. as I

  703. want and

  704. instead use

  705. that time

  706. to serve

  707. within the

  708. life of the

  709. church.

  710. It may be

  711. being committed

  712. to helping

  713. at Polo.

  714. It might be

  715. distributing

  716. calendars as

  717. we go out

  718. on Wednesday

  719. night.

  720. It could be

  721. serving in

  722. creche or

  723. Sunday school.

  724. It could be

  725. setting up and

  726. saying I'm

  727. going to be

  728. there every

  729. Sunday.

  730. Okay, I've

  731. got my

  732. set up

  733. team but

  734. I'm going

  735. to be

  736. there and

  737. welcome

  738. people.

  739. Oh, I

  740. know all the

  741. things that

  742. we do.

  743. It might

  744. interfere with

  745. your shopping

  746. day.

  747. It might be

  748. the night

  749. that your

  750. favourite TV

  751. programme is

  752. on.

  753. You might

  754. have a

  755. match to

  756. play.

  757. You might

  758. have friends

  759. who are

  760. inviting you

  761. out and

  762. you need

  763. to hang

  764. out with

  765. them.

  766. Yes, we've

  767. all got

  768. rights.

  769. But that

  770. right is

  771. to be

  772. surrendered

  773. to serve

  774. the gospel.

  775. Will it

  776. be costly?

  777. Absolutely.

  778. Will it

  779. mean sacrifice?

  780. Yes.

  781. But as

  782. people see

  783. our lives,

  784. they will

  785. see the

  786. cost involved

  787. and even

  788. as we

  789. live out

  790. our life,

  791. it will

  792. illustrate

  793. the ultimate

  794. sacrifice that

  795. has been

  796. paid by

  797. Jesus.

  798. us.

  799. We will

  800. give up

  801. and put

  802. up with

  803. anything

  804. rather than

  805. hinder the

  806. gospel of

  807. Christ.

  808. By

  809. surrendering

  810. our rights,

  811. the gospel

  812. is proclaimed,

  813. churches are

  814. planted,

  815. and people

  816. are saved.

  817. So we

  818. surrender our

  819. rights.

  820. the second

  821. big idea

  822. is we

  823. use our

  824. rights to

  825. serve the

  826. gospel.

  827. Look at

  828. verse 9.

  829. We use

  830. our rights

  831. to serve

  832. the gospel.

  833. Verse 19,

  834. though I

  835. am free

  836. and belong

  837. to no

  838. man,

  839. I make

  840. myself a

  841. slave to

  842. everyone

  843. to win

  844. as many

  845. as possible.

  846. we live

  847. in a

  848. culture of

  849. rights.

  850. We'll

  851. protest for

  852. our rights.

  853. I don't

  854. disagree with

  855. that.

  856. We know

  857. what our

  858. rights are

  859. and we

  860. demand it.

  861. But for

  862. the Christian,

  863. look what it

  864. says in

  865. verse 19,

  866. we are to

  867. be a

  868. slave to

  869. everyone.

  870. In other

  871. words,

  872. we use

  873. our rights

  874. not for

  875. self,

  876. but to

  877. serve

  878. others.

  879. Why?

  880. the end

  881. of verse

  882. 19,

  883. to win

  884. as many

  885. as possible.

  886. To use

  887. our rights

  888. to serve

  889. the gospel

  890. so that

  891. other people

  892. become

  893. Christians.

  894. And for

  895. us,

  896. this will

  897. mean two

  898. things.

  899. It means

  900. we are to

  901. be flexible

  902. as messengers.

  903. Look at

  904. verse 20.

  905. Look at

  906. the flexibility

  907. of Paul.

  908. to the

  909. Jews,

  910. I became

  911. like a

  912. Jew.

  913. Why?

  914. To win

  915. the Jews.

  916. To those

  917. under the

  918. law, I

  919. became like

  920. one under

  921. the law,

  922. though I

  923. myself am

  924. not under

  925. the law.

  926. Why?

  927. So as

  928. to win

  929. those under

  930. the law.

  931. You see,

  932. if Paul was

  933. reaching

  934. Jewish

  935. people,

  936. he would

  937. follow

  938. Jewish laws

  939. and traditions.

  940. If that

  941. meant

  942. observing the

  943. Sabbath and

  944. not doing

  945. certain things

  946. on that

  947. particular

  948. day,

  949. so that

  950. he could

  951. proclaim

  952. the gospel

  953. in the

  954. synagogue,

  955. he would

  956. do that.

  957. He became

  958. like one

  959. of them.

  960. But on

  961. the other

  962. hand,

  963. verse 21,

  964. to those

  965. not having

  966. the law,

  967. to the

  968. Gentiles,

  969. I became

  970. like one

  971. of those

  972. not having

  973. the law.

  974. Why?

  975. So as

  976. to win

  977. those

  978. not having

  979. the law.

  980. people,

  981. so if

  982. he was

  983. reaching

  984. Gentile

  985. people,

  986. he would

  987. follow their

  988. customs and

  989. practices.

  990. And if that

  991. meant he

  992. could go and

  993. eat food

  994. sacrificed to

  995. the idols

  996. that we

  997. looked at

  998. last week,

  999. so that he

  1000. could get a

  1001. hearing and

  1002. share the

  1003. gospel with

  1004. those people,

  1005. well he

  1006. would go

  1007. and do

  1008. it.

  1009. It's what

  1010. we call

  1011. incarnational

  1012. ministry.

  1013. The

  1014. incarnation is

  1015. God coming

  1016. down as

  1017. man to

  1018. live in

  1019. this world,

  1020. to be

  1021. like one

  1022. of us.

  1023. Hudson

  1024. Taylor got

  1025. it right,

  1026. didn't he?

  1027. A missionary

  1028. who went to

  1029. China in

  1030. the 1850s.

  1031. When he

  1032. arrived,

  1033. he immediately

  1034. began to

  1035. dress in

  1036. Chinese clothes

  1037. and drew his

  1038. hair into a

  1039. big long

  1040. pigtail.

  1041. Why?

  1042. Well,

  1043. he wanted to

  1044. be like a

  1045. Chinaman,

  1046. to win as

  1047. many Chinese

  1048. as possible

  1049. for Christ.

  1050. this is what

  1051. he said and

  1052. this is how

  1053. he lived.

  1054. He said

  1055. this,

  1056. China is

  1057. not to

  1058. be won

  1059. for Christ

  1060. by quiet,

  1061. ease-loving

  1062. men and

  1063. women.

  1064. The stamp

  1065. of men and

  1066. women we

  1067. need is

  1068. such as

  1069. will put

  1070. Jesus,

  1071. China,

  1072. and souls

  1073. first and

  1074. foremost in

  1075. everything and

  1076. at every

  1077. time,

  1078. even life

  1079. itself,

  1080. must be

  1081. secondary.

  1082. Incarnational

  1083. ministry,

  1084. becoming like

  1085. one of

  1086. them,

  1087. to reach

  1088. down.

  1089. He used

  1090. his rights

  1091. to serve

  1092. the gospel.

  1093. And the

  1094. call for us

  1095. is no

  1096. different.

  1097. Look at

  1098. verse 22.

  1099. To the

  1100. weak I

  1101. became weak,

  1102. so as to

  1103. win the

  1104. weak.

  1105. I have

  1106. become all

  1107. things to

  1108. all men,

  1109. so that by

  1110. all possible

  1111. means I

  1112. might save

  1113. some.

  1114. Carigoline,

  1115. Cork,

  1116. the nation

  1117. of Ireland,

  1118. is not to

  1119. be won

  1120. for Christ

  1121. by quiet,

  1122. ease-loving

  1123. men and

  1124. women.

  1125. What is

  1126. required is

  1127. men and

  1128. women,

  1129. people like

  1130. us,

  1131. who will

  1132. put Jesus

  1133. first,

  1134. souls

  1135. foremost,

  1136. in everything

  1137. and at

  1138. every time.

  1139. Our own

  1140. life must

  1141. become

  1142. secondary.

  1143. So how

  1144. flexible are

  1145. we as

  1146. messengers

  1147. of the

  1148. gospel?

  1149. How

  1150. incarnational

  1151. are we?

  1152. Do we

  1153. only invite

  1154. people into

  1155. our homes

  1156. those who

  1157. are of

  1158. the same

  1159. social

  1160. class,

  1161. the same

  1162. colour of

  1163. skin,

  1164. and kind

  1165. of just

  1166. fit in

  1167. with the

  1168. way we

  1169. do

  1170. things?

  1171. Do we

  1172. just sit

  1173. comfortably

  1174. in our

  1175. own little

  1176. Christian

  1177. culture,

  1178. and talk

  1179. to our

  1180. nice

  1181. middle-class

  1182. Christian

  1183. friends,

  1184. and expect

  1185. everybody to

  1186. come in

  1187. to us?

  1188. do we

  1189. just

  1190. organize

  1191. programs and

  1192. events for

  1193. children so

  1194. that they

  1195. don't have

  1196. to mix

  1197. with those

  1198. kind of

  1199. people?

  1200. If we're

  1201. to see

  1202. people become

  1203. Christians,

  1204. we need to

  1205. become

  1206. flexible,

  1207. incarnational.

  1208. So let me

  1209. encourage you

  1210. that if you

  1211. are invited

  1212. by your

  1213. neighbours to

  1214. go for a

  1215. Christmas

  1216. drink,

  1217. go along.

  1218. And if

  1219. you're not

  1220. invited,

  1221. well why

  1222. don't you

  1223. invite them

  1224. to your

  1225. house?

  1226. Yes,

  1227. you might

  1228. feel out

  1229. of your

  1230. comfort zone,

  1231. yes,

  1232. you mightn't

  1233. have talked

  1234. them very

  1235. much,

  1236. but how

  1237. else will

  1238. you get

  1239. to know

  1240. them?

  1241. Move out

  1242. of your

  1243. comfort zone.

  1244. If you're

  1245. going to be

  1246. hanging out

  1247. with friends,

  1248. going to

  1249. the cinema,

  1250. go to

  1251. the gym,

  1252. or going

  1253. shopping,

  1254. instead of

  1255. inviting the

  1256. usual Christian

  1257. friend that

  1258. you saw

  1259. ten times

  1260. yesterday,

  1261. why not

  1262. invite a

  1263. friend who's

  1264. not a

  1265. Christian?

  1266. But maybe

  1267. you don't

  1268. have friends

  1269. who aren't

  1270. Christians.

  1271. Now that's

  1272. a problem.

  1273. We need

  1274. to learn

  1275. to leave

  1276. the nice,

  1277. warm,

  1278. safe,

  1279. cosy,

  1280. Christian

  1281. ghetto where

  1282. everything is

  1283. like as

  1284. we want

  1285. it.

  1286. What does

  1287. it say at

  1288. the end of

  1289. verse 22?

  1290. I have

  1291. become all

  1292. things to

  1293. all men

  1294. so that

  1295. by all

  1296. possible

  1297. means

  1298. I might

  1299. save some.

  1300. It's

  1301. incarnational

  1302. ministry,

  1303. stepping

  1304. outside of

  1305. our comfort.

  1306. Just as

  1307. Christ came

  1308. down and

  1309. stepped into

  1310. the manger

  1311. and walked

  1312. the life

  1313. that he

  1314. did,

  1315. we are

  1316. called to

  1317. follow.

  1318. so we're

  1319. to be

  1320. flexible as

  1321. messengers,

  1322. but yet

  1323. faithful to

  1324. the message.

  1325. You see,

  1326. we need to

  1327. make sure

  1328. that our

  1329. flexibility

  1330. is also

  1331. controlled by

  1332. faithfulness.

  1333. Verse 23,

  1334. he says,

  1335. I do all

  1336. this for the

  1337. sake of the

  1338. gospel that I

  1339. might share

  1340. in its

  1341. blessings.

  1342. For the

  1343. sake of the

  1344. gospel.

  1345. gospel.

  1346. So while

  1347. we adapt

  1348. to fit in

  1349. with people,

  1350. we must

  1351. be careful

  1352. not to

  1353. adapt the

  1354. gospel message.

  1355. In other

  1356. words,

  1357. we don't

  1358. change the

  1359. gospel to

  1360. make it

  1361. more acceptable

  1362. by those

  1363. we are

  1364. seeking to

  1365. reach.

  1366. Of course,

  1367. we need to

  1368. be contextual,

  1369. we need to

  1370. make it

  1371. relevant,

  1372. we need to

  1373. say it in

  1374. words that

  1375. people are

  1376. going to

  1377. understand,

  1378. but we

  1379. must not

  1380. change the

  1381. content.

  1382. Paul's

  1383. approach was

  1384. simple.

  1385. We looked

  1386. at it in

  1387. chapter 2

  1388. verse 1.

  1389. This is

  1390. what it

  1391. says there,

  1392. chapter 2,

  1393. sorry,

  1394. verse 2.

  1395. He says,

  1396. For I

  1397. resolved to

  1398. know nothing

  1399. while I

  1400. was with

  1401. you except

  1402. Jesus

  1403. Christ and

  1404. him crucified.

  1405. You see,

  1406. being with

  1407. friends and

  1408. being flexible

  1409. and being

  1410. all things

  1411. to all

  1412. people,

  1413. that in

  1414. itself is

  1415. good,

  1416. and it's

  1417. a start,

  1418. but that's

  1419. not going

  1420. to make

  1421. anyone a

  1422. Christian.

  1423. The only

  1424. way somebody

  1425. will become

  1426. a Christian

  1427. is by

  1428. actually

  1429. hearing the

  1430. good news.

  1431. They must

  1432. hear about

  1433. Christ and

  1434. his cross.

  1435. And at

  1436. Christmas time

  1437. we come and

  1438. we celebrate

  1439. the birth of

  1440. Jesus.

  1441. But let's

  1442. not forget

  1443. the reason

  1444. why he

  1445. was born.

  1446. Jesus was

  1447. born to

  1448. die.

  1449. he came

  1450. into this

  1451. world to

  1452. take our

  1453. sin upon

  1454. himself, to

  1455. rise again, to

  1456. defeat death.

  1457. A Jesus who

  1458. is left in

  1459. the manger

  1460. is no good

  1461. to anyone.

  1462. We must

  1463. take them from

  1464. the manger to

  1465. the cross

  1466. and to the

  1467. resurrection and

  1468. let them see

  1469. who this

  1470. Jesus is.

  1471. Jesus.

  1472. So again,

  1473. this Christmas,

  1474. as we seek to

  1475. be flexible with

  1476. our friends, as

  1477. we seek to

  1478. fit in, as

  1479. we seek to

  1480. adapt and be

  1481. with people,

  1482. let us be

  1483. faithful.

  1484. Why not

  1485. give that

  1486. evangelistic

  1487. book?

  1488. Why not

  1489. give that

  1490. present that

  1491. will explain

  1492. something of

  1493. the truth of

  1494. who Jesus

  1495. is?

  1496. We must

  1497. be faithful

  1498. and we

  1499. must be

  1500. flexible.

  1501. We all

  1502. have rights,

  1503. but our

  1504. rights are

  1505. to be used

  1506. to serve

  1507. the gospel.

  1508. And as we

  1509. surrender our

  1510. rights,

  1511. we gain a

  1512. great and

  1513. eternal reward.

  1514. look at

  1515. verse 25.

  1516. Everyone who

  1517. competes in

  1518. the games

  1519. goes into

  1520. strict training.

  1521. They do it

  1522. to get a

  1523. crown that

  1524. will not

  1525. last.

  1526. So every

  1527. gold medal

  1528. that's won in

  1529. the Olympics,

  1530. it doesn't

  1531. last forever.

  1532. They're only

  1533. champions until

  1534. somebody else

  1535. wins the

  1536. next time.

  1537. but we

  1538. do it to

  1539. get a

  1540. crown that

  1541. will last

  1542. forever.

  1543. You see,

  1544. if I think

  1545. that this

  1546. life is all

  1547. about my

  1548. rights,

  1549. then I

  1550. will make

  1551. this life

  1552. all about

  1553. me.

  1554. What I

  1555. want,

  1556. what suits

  1557. me,

  1558. what pleases

  1559. me,

  1560. and everybody

  1561. else is there

  1562. to serve

  1563. my needs.

  1564. And I

  1565. will make

  1566. decisions about

  1567. my comfort

  1568. and my

  1569. pleasure and

  1570. how to make

  1571. life more

  1572. comfortable for

  1573. me.

  1574. Because we're

  1575. looking for the

  1576. prize now.

  1577. We're looking for

  1578. the glory now.

  1579. We want it

  1580. here.

  1581. But if one

  1582. day I am

  1583. going to receive

  1584. a crown that

  1585. will last

  1586. forever,

  1587. an eternal

  1588. crown,

  1589. a kingdom

  1590. where everything

  1591. is right and

  1592. everything is

  1593. perfect,

  1594. then I will

  1595. gladly and

  1596. joyfully surrender

  1597. my rights now

  1598. for the sake of

  1599. the gospel and

  1600. for the glory

  1601. that is to

  1602. come.

  1603. You see,

  1604. the only

  1605. thing,

  1606. the only

  1607. thing that we

  1608. will see in

  1609. eternity

  1610. are those

  1611. that have been

  1612. saved by the

  1613. gospel.

  1614. The only

  1615. thing that we

  1616. will see in

  1617. eternity are

  1618. those that have

  1619. been saved by

  1620. the gospel.

  1621. So do not

  1622. use your

  1623. rights for

  1624. temporary things

  1625. that do not

  1626. last.

  1627. Rather,

  1628. let us use

  1629. our rights for

  1630. eternal things

  1631. that will last

  1632. forever.

  1633. May this

  1634. Christmas season

  1635. be a time

  1636. where we see

  1637. what it is

  1638. to follow

  1639. the example

  1640. of the

  1641. one who

  1642. gave his

  1643. rights to

  1644. serve us,

  1645. that we

  1646. might serve

  1647. others,

  1648. that they

  1649. will see in

  1650. our lives

  1651. demonstrated

  1652. the grace

  1653. and the

  1654. gospel of

  1655. Jesus,

  1656. that they

  1657. too

  1658. might be

  1659. saved.

  1660. Let's

  1661. pray.

  1662. ,

  1663. hell,
