  1. for each one of us.

  2. And it is a complete guide

  3. for our faith, what we believe,

  4. and what we practice.

  5. You and I must be careful not to divide the Scriptures.

  6. It's a complete whole.

  7. And all written under the superintendence

  8. of the Holy Spirit.

  9. Hadn't Jesus Himself said these words

  10. in John 16 and verse 13,

  11. when the Spirit of truth comes,

  12. He will guide you into some truth?

  13. Partial truth?

  14. No, when He, the Holy Spirit of truth, comes,

  15. He will guide you into all truth.

  16. We don't need any more

  17. than what is written in this book.

  18. This is our foundation.

  19. This is where we stand as believers.

  20. And we are to devote ourselves

  21. to the apostles' teaching.

  22. It's the foundation of the church.

  23. Ephesians 2 and verse 19 says this,

  24. that we are God's people

  25. and members of God's household

  26. built upon the foundation

  27. of the apostles and prophets

  28. with Christ Jesus Himself

  29. as the chief cornerstone.

  30. We move the foundation

  31. and the building collapses.

  32. There is no church

  33. in the meaningful sense.

  34. So thank God

  35. for His word.

  36. The third thing

  37. that I want to bring before you

  38. this morning is this,

  39. that their teaching

  40. was full

  41. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  42. After Peter explains

  43. what has happened

  44. on the day of Pentecost,

  45. how he speaks about

  46. Joel the prophet,

  47. what does he do?

  48. Well, he speaks

  49. about Christ.

  50. Christ.

  51. And we shouldn't be surprised.

  52. Why?

  53. Well, because the Holy Spirit

  54. of truth,

  55. his task is

  56. to bring glory

  57. to Christ.

  58. And that's exactly

  59. what is happening

  60. as Peter preaches

  61. from verse 22

  62. onwards

  63. right through

  64. to verse 41.

  65. He's saying

  66. who this Jesus is

  67. and what they must do

  68. about this Lord Jesus.

  69. So he speaks

  70. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  71. He speaks of His miracles.

  72. Those signs

  73. that pointed

  74. to who He was.

  75. He speaks about

  76. the crucifixion of Christ.

  77. He has a lot to say

  78. about the resurrection

  79. of Christ.

  80. He speaks about

  81. the glory

  82. that He has gone to.

  83. He speaks to us

  84. very clearly

  85. of the Savior,

  86. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  87. And the people heard

  88. and they believed

  89. about this

  90. Lord Jesus Christ.

  91. What shall we do?

  92. Repent

  93. and put your trust

  94. in Him.

  95. And you will receive

  96. the forgiveness

  97. of your sins.

  98. Your problems

  99. of sin,

  100. the problem of sin

  101. will be dealt with

  102. and be baptized.

  103. You see,

  104. the apostles

  105. knew what Jesus

  106. had said.

  107. Go into

  108. all the world

  109. and preach

  110. the gospel.

  111. And I'll be with you

  112. and teach them

  113. everything

  114. that I have

  115. commanded you.

  116. So they told

  117. of Jesus

  118. and they glorified

  119. Jesus

  120. and they taught

  121. the sayings

  122. of Jesus.

  123. Their teaching

  124. was full

  125. of a glorified

  126. Christ.

  127. The real Jesus

  128. was proclaimed

  129. in the power

  130. of the Spirit.

  131. and they

  132. continued

  133. steadfast

  134. in the apostles

  135. teaching

  136. which glorified

  137. the Lord

  138. Jesus Christ.

  139. And we know

  140. that's true.

  141. When they were

  142. persecuted,

  143. what did they do?

  144. Well,

  145. they went everywhere.

  146. And what did they do

  147. when they went everywhere?

  148. They preached

  149. Christ.

  150. Wouldn't it be

  151. wonderful

  152. if you went

  153. down the streets

  154. of Carragaleine?

  155. And people

  156. weren't talking

  157. about the weather.

  158. Although there's

  159. a lot to talk

  160. about the weather

  161. at the present time.

  162. But people's

  163. conversation

  164. was about

  165. the Savior.

  166. But is

  167. our conversation

  168. about

  169. the Savior?

  170. Oh,

  171. that we might

  172. know that

  173. movement in

  174. our hearts.

  175. For I know

  176. myself,

  177. and know that

  178. it is true

  179. of you also,

  180. that sometimes

  181. your hearts

  182. are cold

  183. as far as

  184. the Savior

  185. is concerned.

  186. Oh,

  187. that the Lord

  188. will come

  189. afresh to us.

  190. And with a power

  191. that perhaps

  192. we have not

  193. known before,

  194. that we're

  195. full of Christ.

  196. because we

  197. have taken

  198. notice

  199. of what the

  200. scriptures say,

  201. and we will

  202. become devoted

  203. to the

  204. apostles'

  205. teaching,

  206. which was

  207. full of

  208. Christ.

  209. The fourth

  210. thing I want

  211. to say this

  212. morning,

  213. their devotion

  214. to the

  215. apostles'

  216. teaching

  217. was

  218. continuous.

  219. A literal

  220. translation

  221. of verse 42,

  222. the first

  223. part of

  224. verse 42,

  225. says this,

  226. they were

  227. continually

  228. devoting

  229. themselves

  230. to the

  231. apostles'

  232. teaching.

  233. And let's

  234. think,

  235. these apostles,

  236. who were

  237. they?

  238. Well,

  239. they were

  240. unlearned,

  241. ignorant

  242. men.

  243. they hadn't

  244. been to

  245. theological

  246. school.

  247. They hadn't

  248. had the

  249. education of

  250. the scribes

  251. and the

  252. Pharisees.

  253. No,

  254. they were

  255. fishermen.

  256. They were

  257. ordinary

  258. people,

  259. but empowered

  260. by the

  261. Spirit of

  262. God.

  263. And later

  264. we read

  265. that the

  266. whole world

  267. was turned

  268. upside down

  269. as a

  270. result of

  271. the

  272. apostolic

  273. teaching.

  274. As people

  275. heard it,

  276. they sought

  277. to communicate

  278. to others.

  279. They were

  280. continually

  281. devoting

  282. themselves

  283. to the

  284. apostles'

  285. teaching.

  286. They were

  287. steadfast.

  288. They were

  289. single-minded.

  290. They were

  291. hungry for

  292. the Word,

  293. if you like.

  294. Not just

  295. the milk,

  296. but also

  297. the meat.

  298. They sought

  299. to regulate

  300. their lives

  301. according to

  302. the apostles'

  303. teaching.

  304. They were

  305. steeped in

  306. the teaching

  307. of the

  308. scribes and

  309. Pharisees.

  310. People who

  311. had constantly

  312. misinterpreted

  313. the scriptures.

  314. But there

  315. was this

  316. change of

  317. direction.

  318. And they

  319. devoted

  320. themselves

  321. continually

  322. to the

  323. apostles'

  324. teaching.

  325. teaching.

  326. So I'll

  327. ask you the

  328. question as I

  329. asked myself

  330. as I prepared

  331. this message.

  332. How devoted

  333. am I?

  334. How devoted

  335. are you?

  336. do you have

  337. a longing

  338. to know

  339. more?

  340. More

  341. of our

  342. blessed

  343. Trinity,

  344. the Father,

  345. the Son,

  346. and the

  347. Holy Spirit?

  348. Do you

  349. long to

  350. know more

  351. of what

  352. God says

  353. to you

  354. and to

  355. me

  356. in His

  357. words?

  358. Or is

  359. your heart

  360. cold?

  361. Are there

  362. days when you

  363. don't even

  364. bother to

  365. pick up

  366. your Bible?

  367. When you

  368. come on

  369. a Sunday,

  370. you say,

  371. well,

  372. I've heard

  373. it all

  374. before.

  375. Instead of

  376. coming with

  377. anticipation.

  378. Do you

  379. bother to

  380. get out

  381. for the

  382. Bible study

  383. in the

  384. midweek?

  385. Oh, I

  386. know there

  387. are various

  388. reasons why

  389. you can't

  390. be there.

  391. But examine

  392. those reasons,

  393. whether they

  394. are genuine

  395. reasons.

  396. And I'm

  397. not just

  398. saying this

  399. to older

  400. people.

  401. I'm

  402. saying it

  403. to young

  404. people as

  405. well.

  406. Somewhere

  407. along the

  408. line,

  409. somebody

  410. said or

  411. suggested

  412. that the

  413. Bible study

  414. was just

  415. for people

  416. of a

  417. certain age.

  418. Where do

  419. you find

  420. that in

  421. this book?

  422. Oh, I

  423. know you

  424. have your

  425. studies,

  426. and perhaps

  427. it's just as

  428. simple as

  429. meant not

  430. spending quite

  431. so much

  432. in Facebook

  433. so that

  434. you can

  435. be at

  436. the

  437. Bible

  438. study.

  439. You have

  440. to answer

  441. that.

  442. I can't

  443. be your

  444. conscience.

  445. Are we

  446. growing in

  447. our Christian

  448. faith?

  449. As I

  450. prepared this

  451. message, I

  452. thought of the

  453. Apostles'

  454. letter to the

  455. Ephesians in

  456. chapter 1.

  457. 1.

  458. And I

  459. presume the

  460. Apostle Paul,

  461. when he's

  462. writing to

  463. the church

  464. at Ephesus,

  465. expected the

  466. people to

  467. understand what

  468. he was saying,

  469. or at least

  470. for the elders

  471. of the church

  472. to instruct

  473. the people in

  474. what he was

  475. saying.

  476. And he

  477. uses words

  478. there.

  479. Another

  480. part of

  481. our

  482. understanding.

  483. In

  484. chapter 1,

  485. he speaks

  486. about being

  487. chosen.

  488. He speaks

  489. about being

  490. predestined.

  491. He speaks

  492. about being

  493. adopted.

  494. He speaks

  495. about redemption.

  496. He speaks

  497. about the

  498. riches of

  499. God's grace.

  500. He speaks

  501. about the

  502. sealing of

  503. the Spirit.

  504. And so

  505. much more.

  506. Do you

  507. long to

  508. know more

  509. of these

  510. truths?

  511. And how

  512. they apply

  513. in your

  514. daily life?

  515. And there's

  516. so many more

  517. scriptures.

  518. Are we

  519. growing in

  520. our Christian

  521. experience?

  522. are we

  523. devoting

  524. ourselves to

  525. the apostles

  526. teaching?

  527. And is

  528. the truth

  529. gripping

  530. us?

  531. Did the

  532. early church

  533. have an easy

  534. time?

  535. No, they

  536. didn't.

  537. How did

  538. they deal

  539. with their

  540. difficulties?

  541. Well, we

  542. might look at

  543. Acts chapter

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  544. 4, where

  545. Peter and

  546. John are

  547. thrown into

  548. prison.

  549. But the

  550. word was

  551. in fire

  552. in their

  553. bones.

  554. They were

  555. threatened.

  556. They were

  557. told to

  558. be quiet.

  559. Oh, they

  560. said, but we

  561. cannot help

  562. speaking about

  563. what we have

  564. seen and

  565. heard.

  566. And when

  567. they left

  568. prison, they

  569. pray.

  570. And their

  571. prayer is

  572. recorded for

  573. us in

  574. Acts 4 and

  575. verses 24 to

  576. 31.

  577. And what

  578. do they see?

  579. What do they

  580. understand?

  581. Well, they

  582. see the

  583. ruling

  584. authority, the

  585. sovereignty of

  586. God over the

  587. affairs of

  588. men.

  589. They see the

  590. triumph of the

  591. Lord over the

  592. authorities and

  593. powers of this

  594. world.

  595. And they pray

  596. for more power

  597. to get on with

  598. the work of

  599. spreading the

  600. gospel.

  601. And if we go

  602. into Acts 6

  603. and 7, here we

  604. have Stephen.

  605. And he holds

  606. the truth,

  607. apostolic truth,

  608. before the

  609. people.

  610. And people

  611. look at his

  612. face as it

  613. was the face

  614. of an

  615. angel.

  616. Israel.

  617. And when

  618. persecution

  619. broke out

  620. through the

  621. apostle Paul,

  622. those who

  623. had been

  624. scattered went

  625. everywhere,

  626. preaching the

  627. word wherever

  628. they went.

  629. They were

  630. gripped by

  631. the truth.

  632. The truth

  633. was part of

  634. themselves.

  635. The word of

  636. God was hid

  637. in their

  638. hearts.

  639. Oh, that

  640. we might

  641. devote

  642. ourselves to

  643. the apostles'

  644. teaching in a

  645. way that

  646. perhaps we've

  647. not done

  648. before.

  649. I ask you

  650. a question.

  651. Do you

  652. find yourselves

  653. arguing with

  654. apostolic

  655. teaching?

  656. It's evident

  657. that the

  658. apostle Paul

  659. recognized that

  660. there was a

  661. tendency for

  662. people to

  663. argue with

  664. apostolic

  665. teaching.

  666. Paul writes

  667. and encourages

  668. Timothy, and

  669. he encourages

  670. him to preach

  671. the word, to

  672. get on with

  673. apostolic

  674. teaching.

  675. Why?

  676. Well, it was

  677. an imperative.

  678. Paul knew

  679. human nature,

  680. the tendency

  681. to go after

  682. the novel

  683. because people

  684. had itching

  685. ears to hear

  686. what they

  687. wanted to

  688. hear.

  689. Some, you

  690. see, in

  691. the early

  692. church began

  693. to cherry

  694. pick.

  695. I can

  696. believe this,

  697. but I

  698. can't believe

  699. that.

  700. I'm happy

  701. with John,

  702. but I

  703. don't like

  704. Paul.

  705. I'm happy

  706. with the

  707. New Testament,

  708. but not

  709. the Old

  710. Testament.

  711. I like

  712. what John

  713. taught about

  714. love, but

  715. I don't

  716. like what

  717. Paul had

  718. to say

  719. about

  720. predestination.

  721. I'm happy

  722. with teaching

  723. about heaven,

  724. but I

  725. can't accept

  726. judgment

  727. and hell.

  728. We can't

  729. do that.

  730. It's the

  731. whole

  732. word

  733. of God.

  734. And we

  735. must accept

  736. it and

  737. submit to

  738. the apostolic

  739. teaching,

  740. the whole

  741. truth,

  742. and nothing

  743. but the

  744. truth.

  745. The early

  746. church devoted

  747. themselves to

  748. apostolic

  749. teaching,

  750. and so

  751. must we.

  752. Now, I'm

  753. conscious of the

  754. fact that there's

  755. so much more

  756. that needs

  757. to be said.

  758. and you

  759. say, you

  760. haven't said

  761. anything about

  762. fellowship,

  763. about baking

  764. a bread

  765. and a

  766. prayer.

  767. You haven't

  768. said anything

  769. about giving

  770. to the

  771. poor,

  772. etc., and the

  773. various things

  774. that follow.

  775. I know I

  776. haven't.

  777. But you see,

  778. all of these

  779. flow out

  780. of our

  781. faithfulness

  782. to the

  783. word of

  784. God.

  785. You see,

  786. fellowship

  787. comes about

  788. as we

  789. hold on

  790. to this

  791. truth,

  792. as we

  793. devote

  794. ourselves

  795. to this

  796. truth.

  797. It's

  798. unity

  799. in the

  800. truth.

  801. Jesus

  802. says, I

  803. pray for

  804. those who

  805. believe on

  806. me through

  807. their message

  808. that all

  809. of them

  810. may be

  811. one.

  812. So,

  813. fellowship

  814. is based

  815. on the

  816. truth.

  817. Remove

  818. the truth

  819. and we're

  820. just a

  821. club like

  822. any other

  823. club.

  824. And

  825. fellowship

  826. brings

  827. together

  828. nations.

  829. It brings

  830. together

  831. ages.

  832. It brings

  833. together

  834. male and

  835. female.

  836. It brings

  837. together

  838. the married

  839. and the

  840. single.

  841. It brings

  842. together

  843. the educated

  844. and those

  845. who have

  846. comparatively

  847. little

  848. education.

  849. For

  850. barriers

  851. are broken

  852. down

  853. in

  854. Christ.

  855. And

  856. when we

  857. break

  858. bread,

  859. we will

  860. break

  861. bread with

  862. perhaps a

  863. new

  864. understanding

  865. of all

  866. that has

  867. happened

  868. to us

  869. in

  870. Christ.

  871. And

  872. when we

  873. pray,

  874. we will

  875. pray after

  876. the mind

  877. of Christ.

  878. They're

  879. all

  880. interwoven.

  881. And

  882. when we

  883. go out

  884. into the

  885. world

  886. and into

  887. our places

  888. of employment,

  889. into our

  890. schools,

  891. into our

  892. colleges,

  893. we will

  894. want others

  895. to know

  896. of Christ.

  897. Christ.

  898. So may

  899. you and

  900. I be

  901. granted

  902. strength

  903. to devote

  904. ourselves

  905. to the

  906. apostles'

  907. teaching,

  908. this

  909. truth

  910. on

  911. fire.

  912. Pray for

  913. your

  914. pastor.

  915. Pray for

  916. the elders

  917. of the

  918. church

  919. that they

  920. too

  921. will know

  922. this power

  923. of God

  924. resting

  925. upon them.

  926. what a

  927. difference

  928. it will

  929. make

  930. in our

  931. individual

  932. lives,

  933. what a

  934. difference

  935. it will

  936. make

  937. in our

  938. church

  939. life,

  940. and in

  941. the

  942. goodness

  943. of God,

  944. what a

  945. difference

  946. it will

  947. make

  948. in our

  949. community.

  950. Amen.

  951. Let's

  952. pray.

  953. Father,

  954. we thank

  955. you that

  956. you've

  957. given us

  958. your

  959. word.

  960. We pray

  961. that we

  962. will be

  963. mindful of

  964. that

  965. word.

  966. Help us,

  967. O Lord,

  968. to know

  969. your

  970. word,

  971. to be

  972. well-versed

  973. in your

  974. word.

  975. And may

  976. your word,

  977. O Lord,

  978. come to

  979. us so that

  980. we're not

  981. just hearers

  982. of your

  983. word,

  984. but doers

  985. also.

  986. O Father,

  987. we look

  988. to you

  989. and pray

  990. that you

  991. will come

  992. upon all

  993. of us

  994. as individuals

  995. and corporately

  996. with the

  997. empowering

  998. of your

  999. Holy Spirit

  1000. so that

  1001. others will

  1002. be affected.

  1003. And this

  1004. we pray

  1005. in Jesus'

  1006. name.

  1007. Amen.

  1008. Amen.

  1009. Amen.
