  1. wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman,

  2. did God really say you must not eat from the tree in the garden?

  3. The woman said to the serpent, we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say

  4. you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it

  5. or you will die. You will surely not die, the serpent said to the woman, for God knows that when you eat

  6. of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. When the woman saw

  7. that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye and also desirable for gaining

  8. wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her and he ate it.

  9. Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realized that they were naked,

  10. so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

  11. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden

  12. in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

  13. But the Lord God called to the man, where are you? He answered, I heard you in the garden

  14. and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid. And he said, who told you that you were naked?

  15. Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat? The man said, oh, the woman you put

  16. here with me. She gave me some of the fruit from the tree and I ate it. Then the Lord God said to the

  17. woman, what is this you have done? The woman said, oh, the serpent deceived me and I ate it.

  18. So the Lord God said to the serpent, because you have done this, cursed are you above all the livestock

  19. and all the wild animals. You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

  20. And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and hers.

  21. He will crush your head and you will strike his heel.

  22. To the woman he said, I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing.

  23. With pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband and he will rule

  24. over you. To Adam he said, because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I

  25. commanded you, you must not eat of it. Cursed is the ground because of you. Through painful toil you

  26. will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you and you will eat

  27. the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground

  28. since from it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.

  29. Adam named his wife Eve because she would become the mother of all the living.

  30. The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

  31. And the Lord God said, The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil.

  32. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat

  33. and live forever.

  34. So the Lord God banished him from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

  35. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the garden of Eden,

  36. cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

  37. Well, as we continue to look at God's story, let's pray and ask for his help.

  38. Our Father God, we come before you as the author of this story, this true story,

  39. the creator of all things and the ruler over every one of us.

  40. Father, we ask that you would help us to listen carefully to your story, to its truth,

  41. so that we may understand who we are, what we have become, and our path of redemption.

  42. Father, we ask that these words would not only give us knowledge and understanding with our heads,

  43. but that it would truly show us our hearts and how our hearts can be made new.

  44. We pray for your help in this. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  45. Well, at a very early age, I decided that I didn't like school.

  46. Maybe that's your story too.

  47. I didn't like homework.

  48. I didn't like the teacher.

  49. And I didn't like the rules.

  50. So we started a rebellion.

  51. One lunchtime, my friends and I began to march around the school building,

  52. as if it was like marching around the walls of Jericho.

  53. Chanting as we went, we're on strike, as we passed the headmaster's classroom.

  54. Soon, the whole school had joined in, from junior infants right up to sixth class,

  55. all of us marching around the school, chanting in defiance of school rules.

  56. It was a deliberate act of rebellion.

  57. He was the headmaster.

  58. We were the pupils.

  59. It was his school, not ours.

  60. He made the rules, and we were to obey them.

  61. And we did not like it.

  62. So in an act of defiance, we rebel.

  63. Now I think that's a picture of all of our story.

  64. In Genesis chapter 3, God tells us the true story of what we are really like.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  65. It's a story about our deliberate act of rebellion against our loving Creator and the devastating and eternal consequences.

  66. The story all starts with the test to love God.

  67. You may remember from last week as we looked at creation, that God in his love provided man with all that he needed.

  68. Look back at chapter 2, verse 8.

  69. So as God had created everything, we read in chapter 2, verse 8,

  70. Now the Lord God had planted in the garden in the east in Eden.

  71. Eden.

  72. And there he put the man he had formed.

  73. And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground, trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food.

  74. Eden is this beautiful, pleasing and plentiful garden.

  75. No wonder it means delight.

  76. Everything is there for man to enjoy.

  77. Nothing going wrong.

  78. There's no sadness or hurt.

  79. No pain or struggles.

  80. In fact, it's in this garden that the man and woman enjoy a perfect, intimate relationship with God.

  81. Look at chapter 2, verse 25.

  82. Here's the scene in the garden.

  83. The man and his wife were both naked and they felt no shame.

  84. You see, we've got to understand this carefully because their physical nakedness reflects a deeper inner nakedness.

  85. Here are two people where there is complete openness between each other, but most importantly, openness with God.

  86. There's nothing to hide.

  87. There's nothing to fear.

  88. They're completely transparent.

  89. There is no shame.

  90. There is no guilt.

  91. Man and woman with their loving creator in perfect relationship.

  92. This is how God designed the world to be.

  93. It is perfect delight.

  94. Now, God's beautiful design is going to be maintained by one simple command.

  95. Go back to chapter 2, verse 16.

  96. For this design to be maintained, there is one simple command.

  97. And the Lord God commanded the man, you are free to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it, you will surely die.

  98. You see, our love for God is to be something that's free and spontaneous.

  99. It's to be a natural response to God's love towards us.

  100. And the way to demonstrate our love is to obey God.

  101. That's how we tell him and show him that we love him, is by obeying him.

  102. So he says to man, don't eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

  103. Now, we'll get back to the tree in a minute.

  104. But for now, I want us to see that God's command to his people is like a test of their love and loyalty.

  105. It's not temptation because God has given them everything that they need.

  106. They have all that they ever need for life.

  107. He simply gives this command as a simple way for them to demonstrate their love to their creator God.

  108. And it's no different for us.

  109. Every single day through our words and actions, we are given opportunity to demonstrate our love to our loving creator God.

  110. Through obeying him, we are showing our loyalty and love to him.

  111. So first, there is the test to love God.

  112. Second, we see there is a desire to be God because tragically, their love for God turns into a deliberate and intentional rebellion.

  113. First of all, we have the talking snake.

  114. Or is it?

  115. Have a look at chapter 3, verse 1.

  116. Now, the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.

  117. He said to the woman,

  118. Did God really say you must not eat from any tree in the garden?

  119. Now, I'm sure most of you have a picture in your mind as we read of that little scene.

  120. Of this colourful snake wrapped around a tree talking to Eve with a hiss.

  121. Offering this juicy apple in its coil.

  122. It's the kind of pictures we see in kids' Bibles.

  123. Now, I don't think that's really a very helpful picture at all.

  124. Why?

  125. Well, we're not told what he looks like.

  126. In fact, we're not even told where he comes from.

  127. Only that he is a created being.

  128. Look again at verse 1.

  129. Now, the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.

  130. So, he's not the same as God.

  131. But he is dependent on God.

  132. And he is under God's rule.

  133. However, when we do get to the New Testament,

  134. it does become clear who this serpent is.

  135. He is identified as that ancient serpent called the devil or Satan

  136. who leads the whole world astray.

  137. Now, some will say, well, the devil took the form of a serpent.

  138. Others will say it's the symbol for the devil.

  139. But let's get this clear.

  140. Our concern is not what he looks like,

  141. but how he works.

  142. And I think that's the point of the story.

  143. We're interested in how he works.

  144. He is, look at verse 1,

  145. the most crafty of all the animals that God has made.

  146. So, he's not stupid.

  147. He cleverly uses his wit to deceive.

  148. In fact, his main means of deception

  149. is to question God's word.

  150. Look what it says at the end of verse 1.

  151. He said to the woman,

  152. did God really say,

  153. you must not eat from any tree in the garden?

  154. You see, it creates doubt,

  155. and it makes us sceptical of God.

  156. If God is truly loving,

  157. would he really stop you from having everything in the garden?

  158. It's such a subtle question

  159. that he puts to the man and woman.

  160. It's designed in such a way

  161. that we begin to question God and his goodness.

  162. And in fact, such a questioning

  163. puts us over the creator of the universe.

  164. And slowly and but surely,

  165. we allow ourselves to believe

  166. that God is really not that good,

  167. and that he's maybe this mean kind of God,

  168. and he's withholding all the best things from us.

  169. And with a little bit more pondering,

  170. we think,

  171. well, God is the ultimate party pooter

  172. who just says no all the time,

  173. and he's out to spoil our fun

  174. and ruin things for us.

  175. And so we can begin to see the thinking

  176. that is behind the man and the woman

  177. as Satan comes and twists

  178. and distorts what God has to say.

  179. But the devil's deception

  180. is also matched by man's willful desire.

  181. Look at verse 2.

  182. The woman said to the serpent,

  183. We may eat from the trees in the garden,

  184. but God did say,

  185. You must not eat fruit from the tree

  186. that is in the middle of the garden,

  187. and you must not touch it,

  188. or you will die.

  189. Now the woman is just playing with truth here.

  190. God never said anything about touching the fruit.

  191. He said,

  192. Don't eat it.

  193. He never said anything about touching it.

  194. So she's putting words in God's mouth

  195. and making God out to be something that he is not.

  196. Verse 4.

  197. You will surely not die,

  198. the serpent said to the woman.

  199. For God knows that when you eat of it,

  200. your eyes will be opened

  201. and you will be like God,

  202. knowing good and evil.

  203. That's ultimately what the man and woman want.

  204. They want to be like God.

  205. Do you remember what the tree was called

  206. back in verse 17 of chapter 2?

  207. It's called the tree of the knowledge

  208. of good and evil.

  209. Now the knowledge of good and evil

  210. is not just knowing the difference

  211. between good and evil.

  212. It's deciding for themselves

  213. what is good and what is evil.

  214. You see, when God made the world,

  215. he pronounced everything as good.

  216. After he created each stage,

  217. he steps back and he looks and he says,

  218. That is good.

  219. God decides what is good and evil,

  220. not us.

  221. He knows what is best for us

  222. because he made us.

  223. But here's the problem.

  224. That's what man wants.

  225. We want to be like God

  226. so that we decide what is good or evil.

  227. We want to be the ones who declare

  228. what is right and wrong.

  229. In other words,

  230. we've got no longer any use for God.

  231. We don't need God anymore

  232. because we decide what we should do.

  233. Verse 6.

  234. When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree

  235. was good for food,

  236. pleasing to the eye,

  237. and also desirable for gaining wisdom,

  238. she took some

  239. and ate it.

  240. Now we mustn't think that the fruit

  241. is somehow magical.

  242. It's not like they eat the fruit

  243. and then all of a sudden

  244. they've been given this God-like power.

  245. Now remember that the tree

  246. was a test to show their love

  247. and their loyalty to God.

  248. And they fail.

  249. Rather than give their love to God,

  250. they love themselves.

  251. Instead of being loyal to their creator God,

  252. they become loyal to their own desires

  253. and they follow what's in their heart.

  254. They simply long to be God.

  255. Now the story we've just read

  256. is the story of us all.

  257. We are no different

  258. to what happened in the Garden of Eden.

  259. In fact, as we follow through in the story,

  260. look how it continues.

  261. Have a look at chapter 5, verse 1.

  262. Chapter 5, verse 1.

  263. This is the written account

  264. of Adam's line.

  265. So this is a history, if you like,

  266. of the whole human race

  267. from the beginning of time.

  268. Here's a history.

  269. Look what it says.

  270. When God created man,

  271. he made him in the likeness of God.

  272. He created them male and female

  273. and blessed them.

  274. And when they were created,

  275. he called them man.

  276. So far, so good.

  277. But now look what it says.

  278. Verse 3.

  279. When Adam had lived 130 years,

  280. he had a son in his own likeness,

  281. in his own image.

  282. And he named him Seth.

  283. Do you see what's happened?

  284. No longer are we portrayed

  285. as being made in God's image.

  286. We now share in Adam's broken image.

  287. We are like him.

  288. We have the same desires as him.

  289. We willfully defy God

  290. and replace God

  291. and say,

  292. we don't need you anymore.

  293. I know what is right

  294. and best for me.

  295. In fact,

  296. as the story unfolds,

  297. it gets even worse.

  298. Have a look at chapter 6, verse 5.

  299. This is the account of Noah.

  300. Chapter 6, verse 5.

  301. And God looks down on mankind

  302. and it says,

  303. The Lord saw

  304. how great man's wickedness

  305. on earth had become

  306. and that every inclination

  307. of the thoughts of his heart

  308. was only evil

  309. all of the time.

  310. It doesn't mean to say

  311. that man can't do good.

  312. Man does do good.

  313. But that our motives

  314. and all our thinking

  315. is only evil

  316. all the time.

  317. Everything about mankind,

  318. his very inner being,

  319. his nature,

  320. is to rebel.

  321. Just as I,

  322. as a young kid,

  323. wanted to rebel

  324. against the headmaster.

  325. So we all want to live our lives

  326. in rebellion

  327. against God.

  328. We decide what's right.

  329. But we have not made things better.

  330. We've only made things worse.

  331. In fact,

  332. this sorry story

  333. doesn't stop there.

  334. Have a look at chapter 11,

  335. verses 1 to 4.

  336. As the whole story

  337. begins to unfold before us.

  338. Chapter 11, verse 1.

  339. So now there's a large population

  340. in the world,

  341. but nothing has changed.

  342. Chapter 11, verse 1.

  343. Now the whole world

  344. had one common language.

  345. As men moved eastward,

  346. they found a plain in Shinar

  347. and they settled there.

  348. And they said to each other,

  349. come, let's make bricks

  350. and bake them thoroughly.

  351. They used brick instead of stone

  352. and bitumen for mortar.

  353. And here's the point.

  354. Then they said,

  355. come, let us build ourselves

  356. a city

  357. with a tower

  358. that reaches to the heavens

  359. so that we may make a name

  360. for ourselves

  361. and not be scattered

  362. over the face

  363. of the whole earth.

  364. They're wanting to make

  365. a name for themselves,

  366. placing themselves

  367. above God.

  368. It's just another act

  369. of rebellion.

  370. We don't want God's name

  371. to be great.

  372. I want my name

  373. to be great.

  374. I am God.

  375. I declare what is good

  376. and what is evil.

  377. And so we have a picture

  378. of our sorry story.

  379. Continually through time,

  380. we hear God's word,

  381. but we twist it

  382. and we deny it.

  383. We allow ourselves

  384. to believe the lie

  385. that God is not good

  386. and that he's only out

  387. to spoil our fun.

  388. We ponder over our choices

  389. and decisions

  390. and we decide

  391. we know what is best

  392. and right for me.

  393. We desire to be God.

  394. We rebel against him

  395. and we replace him

  396. with me.

  397. We no longer have any need

  398. of God

  399. because I

  400. am now God.

  401. So,

  402. there is the desire

  403. to be God

  404. but when we rebel

  405. against God,

  406. there are devastating

  407. and eternal consequences.

  408. Look at verse 7

  409. of chapter 3.

  410. Our innocence

  411. is lost.

  412. Chapter 3,

  413. verse 7.

  414. So,

  415. after taking the fruit,

  416. chapter 3,

  417. verse 7,

  418. then the eyes

  419. of both of them

  420. were opened

  421. and they realised

  422. that they

  423. were naked.

  424. this isn't just

  425. a physical awareness.

  426. All of a sudden

  427. they are conscious

  428. of what they've done.

  429. For the first time

  430. in their lives,

  431. they are now living

  432. with this terrible weight

  433. of guilt

  434. and shame

  435. that has come

  436. upon them

  437. and in desperation,

  438. look at the rest

  439. of verse 7,

  440. they sewed fig leaves

  441. together

  442. to make a covering

  443. for themselves.

  444. You see,

  445. they're no longer

  446. enjoying this intimacy

  447. with God

  448. and with one another.

  449. They're now trying

  450. to literally

  451. cover up

  452. their shame.

  453. They're trying

  454. to hide away

  455. but this outward

  456. act of covering

  457. is not going

  458. to do anything.

  459. It's like a sticky

  460. plaster

  461. on an open wound.

  462. Verse 8,

  463. then the man

  464. and his wife

  465. heard the sound

  466. of the Lord God

  467. as he was walking

  468. in the garden

  469. in the cool

  470. of the day

  471. and they hid

  472. from the Lord God

  473. among the trees

  474. of the garden.

  475. But the Lord God

  476. called to the man,

  477. Where are you?

  478. He answered,

  479. I heard you

  480. in the garden

  481. and I was afraid

  482. because I was naked

  483. so I hid.

  484. Do you see,

  485. man sees

  486. his own shame.

  487. He sees

  488. what he has done

  489. and God sees

  490. his rebellious heart.

  491. Intimacy

  492. is now

  493. replaced

  494. by hiding.

  495. The joy

  496. that they had

  497. with God

  498. is now replaced

  499. by fear.

  500. They're no longer

  501. walking with God.

  502. They're now

  503. running away

  504. from God

  505. trying to get away

  506. because they're

  507. too ashamed

  508. and they do not

  509. want to be with him.

  510. And that's what

  511. happens when we

  512. rebel.

  513. we lose

  514. our deep

  515. intimacy

  516. with our

  517. creator God.

  518. We no longer

  519. have that unity

  520. with him

  521. and that relationship.

  522. Instead of his

  523. friends,

  524. we've become

  525. his enemies.

  526. Instead of

  527. fellowship with him,

  528. there is this

  529. broken

  530. separation.

  531. But not only

  532. is our innocence

  533. lost,

  534. but we now

  535. live in a world

  536. where there is

  537. not blessing,

  538. but curse.

  539. Look at verse

  540. 14.

  541. The Lord God

  542. said to the serpent,

  543. because you

  544. have done this,

  545. cursed are you

  546. above all the

  547. livestock and

  548. all the wild

  549. animals.

  550. Verse 15,

  551. and I will put

  552. enmity between

  553. you and the

  554. woman and

  555. between your

  556. offspring and

  557. hers.

  558. You see,

  559. instead of the

  560. harmony between

  561. man and creation,

  562. there's going to

  563. be this fierce

  564. battle which is

  565. going to be

  566. played out

  567. between mankind

  568. and Satan.

  569. And his

  570. objective,

  571. as always,

  572. is to turn

  573. people away

  574. from the

  575. loving God

  576. and the

  577. goodness of

  578. his word.

  579. And that's

  580. his scheme

  581. and that's

  582. what he's

  583. doing to

  584. us today.

  585. And that

  586. battle gets

  587. played out

  588. every single

  589. day in a

  590. thousand different

  591. ways as we

  592. continue to

  593. declare what

  594. is good and

  595. what is right.

  596. But with our

  597. rebellion comes

  598. pain and

  599. suffering,

  600. verse 16,

  601. to the

  602. woman,

  603. God said,

  604. I will

  605. greatly

  606. increase your

  607. pains in

  608. childbearing,

  609. with pain you

  610. will give birth

  611. to children,

  612. and your

  613. desire will be

  614. for your

  615. husband.

  616. That is,

  617. you will

  618. long to

  619. rule over

  620. your husband

  621. and he

  622. will rule

  623. over you.

  624. And isn't

  625. that our

  626. experience in

  627. life?

  628. Families and

  629. marriages and

  630. relationships,

  631. they all

  632. begin to

  633. break down

  634. because we

  635. love ourselves

  636. more than we

  637. love God

  638. and we want

  639. to be the

  640. boss and we

  641. want to be

  642. in charge.

  643. But perhaps

  644. the worst of

  645. all of this

  646. is death.

  647. Look at

  648. verse 17.

  649. To Adam

  650. he said,

  651. because you

  652. listened to

  653. your wife and

  654. ate from the

  655. tree from

  656. which I

  657. commanded you,

  658. you must

  659. not eat of

  660. it.

  661. cursed is

  662. the ground

  663. because of

  664. you.

  665. Verse 19.

  666. By the

  667. sweat of

  668. your brow

  669. you will

  670. eat your

  671. food until

  672. you return

  673. to the

  674. ground,

  675. since from

  676. it you

  677. were taken,

  678. for dust

  679. you are,

  680. and to

  681. dust you

  682. will return.

  683. In the

  684. beginning,

  685. everything

  686. lives.

  687. Now,

  688. everything

  689. dies.

  690. Have a

  691. look again

  692. at chapter

  693. 5.

  694. Look at

  695. the account

  696. of humanity.

  697. See the

  698. picture that

  699. is unfolding.

  700. So,

  701. in verse

  702. 5 of

  703. chapter 5

  704. we read,

  705. altogether

  706. Adam lived

  707. 930 years

  708. and then

  709. he died.

  710. Verse 6,

  711. when Seth

  712. lived 105

  713. years he

  714. became the

  715. father of

  716. Enosh.

  717. Now,

  718. look down

  719. at verse

  720. 8.

  721. Altogether

  722. Seth lived

  723. 912 years

  724. and then

  725. he died.

  726. Verse 9,

  727. Enosh had

  728. lived 90

  729. years and

  730. he became

  731. the father

  732. of Kenan.

  733. Verse 11,

  734. Altogether

  735. Enosh lived

  736. 905 years

  737. and then

  738. he died.

  739. On

  740. on and

  741. on it goes

  742. through the

  743. history of

  744. the world

  745. and for

  746. every

  747. mankind

  748. everyone

  749. dies.

  750. And

  751. one day

  752. somebody

  753. will stand

  754. over our

  755. grave

  756. and they

  757. will say

  758. ashes to

  759. ashes,

  760. dust

  761. to dust.

  762. The giving

  763. of life

  764. is now

  765. replaced with

  766. the pronouncement

  767. of death.

  768. What God

  769. had said at

  770. the beginning

  771. was true.

  772. You must

  773. not eat

  774. from the

  775. tree of

  776. the knowledge

  777. of good

  778. and evil

  779. for when

  780. you eat

  781. of it

  782. you will

  783. surely

  784. die.

  785. we may

  786. not have

  787. experienced

  788. death

  789. ourselves

  790. but we've

  791. experienced

  792. in the

  793. sense that

  794. we've all

  795. lost

  796. loved ones.

  797. Death

  798. brings pain

  799. and heartache.

  800. It takes

  801. those we

  802. dearly love.

  803. It steals

  804. away our

  805. joy.

  806. It's a

  807. curse

  808. that we

  809. live with

  810. day in

  811. day out.

  812. Do you

  813. remember what

  814. the serpent

  815. said to

  816. the woman

  817. about eating

  818. the fruit?

  819. The subtle

  820. lie?

  821. He said

  822. you will

  823. not

  824. surely

  825. die.

  826. Do what

  827. you like.

  828. Live how

  829. you want.

  830. Don't

  831. believe this

  832. nonsense about

  833. God judging

  834. people.

  835. It's not

  836. true.

  837. but they

  838. did die

  839. and God

  840. will judge.

  841. In fact

  842. how God

  843. responds

  844. shows how

  845. seriously

  846. God takes

  847. our rebellion.

  848. Look at

  849. chapter 3

  850. verse 23.

  851. So the

  852. Lord God

  853. banished him

  854. from the

  855. garden of

  856. Eden to

  857. work the

  858. ground from

  859. which he

  860. had been

  861. taken.

  862. And after

  863. he drove

  864. the man

  865. out he

  866. placed on

  867. the east

  868. side of

  869. the garden

  870. of Eden

  871. cherubim

  872. or like

  873. angels and

  874. a flaming

  875. sword flashing

  876. back and

  877. forth to

  878. guard the

  879. way to

  880. the tree

  881. of life.

  882. Shut

  883. out.

  884. Separated

  885. from God.

  886. This is

  887. God's

  888. fair,

  889. right and

  890. just response

  891. to our

  892. rebellion.

  893. In God's

  894. judgment we

  895. are eternally

  896. separated from

  897. the source of

  898. all life and

  899. all love.

  900. You see

  901. when we

  902. rebel we

  903. invite God's

  904. judgment upon

  905. ourselves.

  906. And this

  907. is my

  908. story.

  909. And this

  910. is your

  911. story.

  912. It's a

  913. story we

  914. don't like to

  915. hear.

  916. but it's

  917. true.

  918. Well

  919. thankfully

  920. mixed in

  921. with our

  922. story,

  923. our tragic

  924. story is a

  925. story of

  926. hope.

  927. In the

  928. chaos and

  929. in the

  930. disorder and

  931. in the

  932. death that

  933. we see all

  934. around us,

  935. God speaks

  936. a promise.

  937. Chapter 3

  938. verse 15.

  939. This is

  940. what God

  941. said.

  942. I will

  943. put enmity

  944. speaking to

  945. the serpent,

  946. to the

  947. devil.

  948. He says I

  949. will put

  950. enmity between

  951. you and

  952. the woman

  953. and between

  954. your offspring

  955. and hers.

  956. He will

  957. crush your

  958. head and

  959. you will

  960. strike his

  961. heel.

  962. You see

  963. from the

  964. woman,

  965. from this

  966. human race,

  967. one special

  968. person is

  969. going to be

  970. born and

  971. that person

  972. will come

  973. and crush

  974. the devil.

  975. Defeating

  976. him,

  977. destroying

  978. him,

  979. restoring our

  980. broken lives

  981. and renewing

  982. our disordered

  983. world.

  984. How do we

  985. know?

  986. Well have a

  987. look at Romans

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  988. chapter 5.

  989. Romans chapter

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  990. 5.

  991. Here we

  992. see the

  993. promise that

  994. God had

  995. given.

  996. We're

  997. reminded,

  998. first of all,

  999. of what we

  1000. are like.

  1001. Romans 5

    Romans 5:12

  1002. verse 12.

  1003. Therefore,

  1004. just as sin

  1005. entered the

  1006. world through

  1007. one man,

  1008. so he's

  1009. talking about

  1010. Adam and

  1011. his rebellion,

  1012. therefore just as

  1013. sin entered the

  1014. world through

  1015. one man,

  1016. and death

  1017. through sin,

  1018. and in this

  1019. way death

  1020. came to

  1021. all men

  1022. because all

  1023. sinned.

  1024. you see,

  1025. it's making

  1026. that clear

  1027. picture that

  1028. we are just

  1029. like Adam.

  1030. We've all

  1031. messed up.

  1032. We will all

  1033. die.

  1034. We will all

  1035. face God's

  1036. judgment.

  1037. But here we

  1038. see the promise.

  1039. Here we see the

  1040. hope.

  1041. Verse 17.

  1042. For if by the

  1043. trespass or the

  1044. rebellion of

  1045. one man,

  1046. death reigns

  1047. through that

  1048. one man.

  1049. So just

  1050. because of

  1051. rebellion,

  1052. this world is

  1053. now under the

  1054. curse of

  1055. death,

  1056. and everything

  1057. is broken,

  1058. and everything

  1059. is going

  1060. wrong.

  1061. Look what it

  1062. says at the

  1063. rest of verse

  1064. 17.

  1065. How much more

  1066. will those who

  1067. receive God's

  1068. abundant provision

  1069. of grace and

  1070. the gift of

  1071. righteousness reign

  1072. in life through

  1073. the one man,

  1074. Jesus Christ.

  1075. Ralph talked

  1076. about this at

  1077. the beginning,

  1078. just as we

  1079. sang those

  1080. songs.

  1081. In some ways

  1082. we're all under

  1083. Adam, the Adam

  1084. of the Garden

  1085. of Eden.

  1086. But now a new

  1087. Adam has come,

  1088. Jesus Christ,

  1089. one who obeyed

  1090. God perfectly,

  1091. one who never

  1092. did anything

  1093. wrong, one who

  1094. did everything

  1095. that was right.

  1096. And he comes

  1097. and he takes

  1098. all our guilt

  1099. and all our

  1100. shame and all

  1101. our rebellion

  1102. and he takes

  1103. it on himself

  1104. and he is

  1105. punished and he

  1106. is judged for

  1107. me and for

  1108. you so that

  1109. we can receive

  1110. his gift of

  1111. life, so that

  1112. we are now

  1113. covered in his

  1114. righteousness, so

  1115. that God no

  1116. longer sees the

  1117. guilt and shame

  1118. but now treasures

  1119. us and welcomes

  1120. us as his own

  1121. son.

  1122. through the

  1123. death of

  1124. Jesus Christ,

  1125. Satan is

  1126. crushed and

  1127. defeated and

  1128. life is ours

  1129. to receive.

  1130. The promise of

  1131. Jesus Christ who

  1132. comes to give

  1133. us life so that

  1134. we no longer

  1135. have to live in

  1136. rebellion but

  1137. now we have new

  1138. life and we can

  1139. follow his way

  1140. and do what

  1141. God says.

  1142. But you know

  1143. what, that's not

  1144. the end.

  1145. Just have a look

  1146. at Romans chapter

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  1147. 16.

  1148. Look at the way

  1149. this is put.

  1150. For all those

  1151. who have received

  1152. Jesus Christ and

  1153. who are following

  1154. Jesus Christ, look

  1155. what he says to

  1156. us.

  1157. Chapter 16

  1158. verse 20.

  1159. The God of

  1160. peace will soon

  1161. crush Satan under

  1162. your feet.

  1163. Isn't that

  1164. amazing?

  1165. What he's telling

  1166. us here that as

  1167. we, as people who

  1168. have been put right

  1169. by Jesus, begin

  1170. to share and

  1171. preach and

  1172. proclaim and

  1173. share the good

  1174. news of Jesus

  1175. Christ with other

  1176. people, as we

  1177. tell the gospel to

  1178. other people, they're

  1179. also set free from

  1180. the power of

  1181. Satan.

  1182. They're also

  1183. released from the

  1184. curse of death and

  1185. judgment and they

  1186. are given you

  1187. life through Jesus

  1188. Christ.

  1189. The God of

  1190. peace will soon

  1191. crush Satan under

  1192. your feet.

  1193. As we share the

  1194. story of Jesus

  1195. Christ, lives are

  1196. changed, lives are

  1197. transformed and they

  1198. receive the life

  1199. that only God

  1200. can give.

  1201. This is our

  1202. true story.

  1203. A story of

  1204. rebellion, but

  1205. how we are

  1206. rescued and

  1207. how we join in

  1208. with that rescuer

  1209. Jesus Christ and

  1210. share that same

  1211. good news story so

  1212. that others are

  1213. also rescued from

  1214. the predicament that

  1215. they are in.

  1216. may God give us

  1217. opportunity to

  1218. share that story

  1219. with the world

  1220. around us.

  1221. Let's pray.

  1222. Father, please help

  1223. us to see

  1224. ourselves clearly.

  1225. Please help us to

  1226. take off those

  1227. rose-colored

  1228. spectacles that we

  1229. have on that see

  1230. us from our view.

  1231. help us to see

  1232. ourselves from your

  1233. view.

  1234. And would you

  1235. teach us to keep

  1236. running to the

  1237. Lord Jesus, the

1238. one who has come to

  1239. deliver us, the

1240. one who has come to

  1241. cover us in

  1242. righteousness, no

  1243. longer suffering under

  1244. guilt and shame,

  1245. but treasured and

  1246. treated as your own

  1247. son.

  1248. thank you that life

  1249. is ours today

  1250. through Jesus.

1251. And we pray that we

  1252. would share of that

  1253. same message and

  1254. that people would be

  1255. set free from

  1256. following the ways

  1257. of Satan so that

  1258. they may follow the

  1259. Lord Jesus and live

  1260. for him.

  1261. We pray this in

  1262. Jesus' name.

  1263. Amen.

  1264. Amen.

  1265. We're going to

  1266. sing in celebration

  1267. which picks up some

  1268. of those themes,

1269. I will glory in my

  1270. Redeemer whose

  1271. priceless blood has

  1272. ransomed me.

  1273. Mine was the sin.

  1274. That's the reason why

1275. Jesus had to die was

  1276. because of my

  1277. rebellion.

1278. But he sets me free

1279. to live a life for

  1280. him.

  1281. So let's stand

  1282. together as we

  1283. sing.

  1284. Amen.

  1285. Amen.

  1286. Amen.

  1287. Amen.

  1288. Amen.

  1289. Amen.

  1290. Amen.

  1291. Amen.

  1292. Amen.

  1293. Amen.

  1294. Amen.

  1295. Amen.

  1296. Amen.

  1297. Amen.

  1298. Amen.

  1299. Amen.
